A

s I’m sure you have noticed, this month is our 100th issue of Discovering Whittlesea magazine. Of course it didn’t always look the way it does today; 100 months ago, back in August 2004, a new magazine was launched called the Whittlesey Advertiser. It was then, as it is still is, a free publication, but its pages inside were very different. Back in 2004, the magazine was black and white and didn’t have any editorial content. Over the years, the magazine has evolved both in size, content and circulation. After merging with another publication, Discovering Whittlesea emerged. From the increasing success and reputation, the magazine had gone from strength to strength. I came on board two years ago, and would never look back. I feel honoured to be the editor of a magazine which is dedicated to featuring local news and stories about Whittlesey, and long may it continue. To celebrate, this month we welcome yet another new regular feature to Discovering Whittlesea - Revd Nigel and Revd Gill will be joining us to bring you information about the Church of England. As well as this, we also have your regular columnists and local news stories. Don’t forget to write in to our legal team and get your questions answered for free, turn to page 37 for more information. I couldn’t finish without making a quick mention of our front cover this month, Whittlesey Market Place some 100 years ago. It’s funny, to me it doesn’t look all that different... Have a lovely November, and I hope to see you all at the Arnold’s Lane big switch on, Saturday 24th of November.

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Memorial to honour members of the Cambridgeshire and Royal Anglian Regiments A unique memorial to honour those members of the Cambridgeshire and Royal Anglian Regiments was unveiled in Whittlesey Town centre at 11.00 am on Wednesday 3rd October by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire Mr. Freddie Grounds MBE. Mr. Grounds was accompanied by Captain Mark Brazier, a serving officer in the Royal Anglians and the Standards of the Cambridgeshire Association Whittlesey and Peterborough Branch and that of the Royal Anglians. The Royal Anglians is an amalgamation of the Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Beds and Herts, Lincoln, Northampton, Leicester and Cambridgeshire Regiments. The memorial is the brain child of Pop Whitwell who is retiring shortly from his positions of Secretary and Treasurer of the Whittlesey and Peterborough Branch of the Cambridgeshire Regiment Association after 17 years. The service was conducted by the Rev. Kerry Tankard with prayers and dedication before the unveiling. Mr. Grounds said it will for all time remind us of the brave and selfless men and women both from the Cambridgeshire Regiment

and those of the Royal Anglian Regiment who have given their lives. He reminded all that The Royal Anglians are still on active service in Afghanistan. Mr. Grounds congratulated Pop for his initiative and the Branch for their fund raising efforts in obtaining the memorial. Thanks were given to The Leader of Fenland District Council, Cllr. Alan Melton for his generous donation which enabled the Branch to complete the funding. Guests at the ceremony included Deputy Lord Lieutenants Colonel Derek Bristow and Colonel Colin Elsden, the Deputy Mayor of Whittlesey Cllr. Martin Curtis, Mayor and Mayoress of Peterborough, Chairman of the Whittlesey Branch of the British Legion Cll. Ken Mayor, Whittlesey Town Councillors and members of the Branch. Article by Pop Whitwell, Secretary & Treasurer.

Arnold’s Lane Christmas lights 5pm Saturday 24th November

Both pictures on page by Chris Brudenell

Every year, some very good friends of ours, John and Gina Ferridge, brighten Whittlesey by decorating their home with some of the most beautiful Christmas decorations I have ever seen. Each year John climbs his ladder and spends hours preparing Arnold Lane for it’s festive treat, in order ro raise vital money for Children with Cancer UK. So what can we expect from this year? The Alderman Jacobs School Choir will be at the switch on, singing Christmas carols prior to the lights being turned on. But don’t miss them, make sure you turn up by 4:30pm on Saturday 24th of November. Once again a cast member from the Key Theatre’s pantomime, ‘Mother Goose’, will also pay a visit on the night, and we have exclusively heard from Father Christmas who has said he hopes to bring Rudolph along as well. This years switch on takes place on 24th November and is a special day for Gina’s mum as she will be 93, and the birthday girl will be switching on the lights at 5 pm. John and Gina added: “Over the years we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the people of Whittlesey who have donated well over £16k to our charity.” November 2012 | Discovering

Whittlesey Festival Schools Art competition

A showcase of Talent H aving the schools involved in the Whittlesey Festival is an exciting aspect to the day and this year on 9th September was no exception with many entries for the Festival Schools Art competition. Anyone who visited the exhibition on the day at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street could not help but be impressed by the superb display of art and crafts submitted by local children and students . Primary schools New Road, Alderman Jacobs and Park Lane and Sir Harry Smith Community College in Whittlesey all did themselves proud as the standard of work submitted was absolutely superb. the young people we have in the community. There was such an interesting variety of themes and techniques used and it was evident that everyone who entered had worked very hard which made it very difficult for the judges to select the final winners. We consider everyone who took part to be a winner and we look forward to even greater things next year.

PH is high blood pressure within the lungs, which causes the blood vessel walls to become thickened, which puts a strain on the heart, due to not enough oxygen being absorbed into the lungs, causing the heart to enlarge and work harder. It is a very rare condition of the lungs, about 3,500 to 4,000 people in this country have been diagnosed with the condition. It is thought that a further 2,000 may have it but have yet to be diagnosed. Due to the rare nature of this disease most GP’s are not aware of how serious it is. Many people are treated for asthma in the early stages or they just think they are getting old and breathless. PHA-UK work in conjunction with the centres of excellence in the country (5 in total), one of them being Papworth Hospital, to raise awareness of the disease with Health Practioners and patients alike. They support people financially, where needed for e.g. portable oxygen cylinders, travel etc. They are also on the end of the phone or internet for people to contact if they just need to talk. They successfully ran a campaign against ‘NICE’ (the medical governing body, who decide who should get funding for medication!!) and got the ruling that patients couldn’t have a particularly successful treatment, overturned. Sue & John Locke and Karen & Russell Hart are organising a Charity Fundraiser at the Fleet Centre, Fletton on Saturday 24th November. The highlight of the evening will the ‘The Motor City Vipers’ supported by a disco. Tickets cost £8 and are available from the above people. If you would like to support this event please contact: Sue on 079 699 962 38 or Russell on 079 775 948 52 or Karen on 077 197 143 28. For further information visit www.phassociation.uk.com. LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA

A new Headteacher at The Park Lane Primary and Nursery School T he Park Lane Primary and Nursery School has a new Headteacher, after Val Cameron retired from her post after six successful years at the school. The new Headteacher, Mrs Margaret Leverett, is not new to the role of a primary school Headteacher as she has done the job before in other primary schools in Cambridgeshire. Most recently, she has been working for Cambridgeshire County Council as a school inspector and adviser, which involved working with Headteachers, teachers and governors in a number of schools supporting school improvement. Last year, Mrs Leverett managed the primary advisors team in South Cambridgeshire as the Senior Advisor for the area. Margaret explained that this was a real privilege, as she was able to really focus on teaching and learning and worked with many, many different schools, and now feels that she can put it all back into practice at Park Lane. One of the things Mrs Leverett is looking forward to is experiencing some of the Whittlesey traditions such as the Straw Bear Festival. She added: “I have always loved music and have sung or played from a young age. I played the piano since I was a child, but a little over 10 years ago started to learn to play the fiddle alongside the children in the school. It became a real love and now I enjoy folk music - both listening and playing. I’ve heard a lot about the Straw Bear Festival and know that the children of Park Lane really enjoy taking part. Who knows – perhaps I’ll get a chance to come a join in with them this year?” As well as music, Mrs Leverett loves walking and photography, gardening and travelling. Being keen in photography helps keep the website up-to date as the school has a busy and informative website that helps parents and families keep in touch with what is happening in the school. “The school’s obvious strengths in how it worked with parents and the community was a real attraction to come and work here. Everyone in the school – the children, staff, parents and governors - have been so supportive and helpful that I have had a really enjoyable first few weeks at the school. As always, the year ahead is busy and there are always changes in government policy and direction to get to grips with - so it promises to be an exciting time.”

A Kay word from Mayor The last few weeks have been very busy; as soon as we landed home from holiday I attended the presentation of the medals and certificates to the children that completed the Summer Reading scheme. This year 229 children enrolled and 72% of that number completed the scheme. It does appear that this year the numbers were slightly down on previous years but it is thought that the Olympics played a part in that. It is really good to see so many children do still enjoy the scheme which is supported by the Town Council. Well done to you all. On 27 September the refurbished moorings at the Bower River adjacent to the Manor Leisure Centre were officially opened. There is still more work to do in the area but for now the moorings are safe. Our thanks should be expressed to Kenny Carrington and the Community Payback Team for their sterling efforts and assistance in doing the work. The Macmillan Coffee Morning on 28 September at Fenland Hall was very well supported once again and I know other organisations and businesses also held coffee mornings on 28th for this very worthwhile charity. I was asked to attend Park Lane School to support Smurfitt Kappa’s Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) project with the children on 29 September. It was a very interesting lunchtime where I saw the children working on projects following a talk from Ron Hughes of Smurfitt Kappa earlier in the month. The Cambridgeshire Regiment and Old Comrades Annual Service was held on Sunday 30 September which was followed on Wednesday 3 October by the unveiling of a unique memorial for the Cambridgeshire and Royal Anglian Regiments. The plinth is situated to the rear of the War Memorial on Queen Street. The Young People of the Year Award (YOPEY) ceremony was held in the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral on 3 October. Once again this was a very moving event. It was a very difficult task this year to determine a winner and eventually it was announced that there were two young people to share the winning spot. I am sure there are local young people who could be nominated so if you know someone or a group of young people that you think deserve to be nominated why not get details for next year. The Fenland Enterprise Business Awards were presented on 5 October. This year following its success as New Business of the Year in 2011, Buttercross Auctions were finalists for the Customer Service Award category and Laurence Seaton was presented with the Runner-up certificate.

Kay Mayor For the second year Whittlesey won the Pride of Fenland Award. The decision for this special award is in the hands of residents, business partners and owners in each Fenland town. People had to vote for the town which they felt demonstrated the greatest entrepreneurial spirit in the last 12 months. The public had to take into consideration what each town has done to combat the recession, increase visitors to the town, promote enterprise and work closely with business groups. I was delighted to accept this award again on your behalf and it is proudly displayed alongside last year’s award in the front window of Grosvenor House. Once again THANKYOU to everyone that voted – can we make it a hat trick of wins in 2013? I attended the High Sheriff’s Justice Service at Ely Cathedral on 7 October. I believe this can only be described as an inspiring occasion. On Friday 12 October I was fortunate to be invited to the launch of the Hereward Community Rail Partnership at March Railway station. A “Friends of March Railway Station” was set up four years ago. Working together with Streetpride a great deal of improvement has already been achieved. I am hoping that something along similar lines can be set up and achieved in Whittlesey in conjunction with the “In Bloom” campaign. To conclude this time on a sombre note; Here we are in November once again; Remembrance Day, 11 November, gives us the opportunity to show our respect to those who fought and continue to fight in conflicts throughout the world. This should not be a one off occasion as we are reminded on a daily basis of the continuing conflicts via the media of television. Just think how it must have been all those years ago when loved ones were on far off shores fighting for their country with letters being the only means of communication. Please show your support on 11th and join Whittlesey in its Act of Remembrance. The parade will leave the Ivy Leaf Club at 2 00 p.m to process to the War Memorial where the Wreath laying ceremony will take place. This will be followed by the Service in St Mary’s Church at 3.00 p.m.

‘Til the next time.. Kay Whittlesea November 2012 | Discovering

Thank you Street Pride (Richard Jones)

A

s you well know by now, we like a little bit of relaxation time, and what a fantastic evening we all had. Mr Richard Jones of The Fenland Roaster, kindly laid on a hospitality evening in the way of thanking ALL Street Priders for their efforts over the past few years. Music, provided by Brian Kell, got everybody’s feet tapping. Thanks also to Bruce from the Letter B for supplying a keg of real ale. Party time over, the following day we had a sunny litterpick at Lattersey and New Road. Our philosophy is the LESS we find the HAPPIER we are and on this occasion we only found around 8 bags of rubbish. Replanting of several Gateway sites are being undertaken by our experts David and Margaret Palmer – who as usual do a brilliant job. Another project which is nearing the building stage is the window box replacements at

This year’s

Eastrea – Nags Head. More about this to come later. Of course, if you managed to get your copy of Discovering Whittlesea before the 27th October, you might like to join us in our BIG DIG daffodil planting at Kings Delph starting at 10:00 on the 27th. Please do come along – and with a spade preferably! The group also wish to thank Richard and Dean of Hemmaway Car Sales in Eastrea, for donating the plants in the oak barrel which stands at the junction of Wype Road and the A605. It is much appreciated. If you would like to help in anyway, please contact me, and I’ll send you information on this and any of our other events.

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA The Eastrea Centre

The Eastrea Centre is at last being constructed - after a gap of more than 67 years since the campaign began. This state-ofthe-art village hall was originally conceived by Ellis Miller, who won an open competition organised by Eastrea Village Hall Trust. The final design has been by David Broker architects and the building is being constructed by Rose Homes of Whittlesey. The new village hall should be finished by the end of this year, and fully open for business next spring.

In Bloom

This year was the first year that Whittlesey has entered the “Anglia in Bloom” competition. I was approached by the Parks and Gardens Manager at Fenland District Council about entering and I felt it right that we should be included as up to now Whittlesey was the only Town in Fenland not in “In Bloom”. I am delighted that at a first attempt we were awarded a Silver Award. The judges’ report read as follows: As a first time entrant Whittlesey has put on a very good show. Enthusiasm is in abundance but more involvement by the community is needed. The work by the Streetpride volunteers is to be commended. The allotments were very well managed and laid out. Whittlesey deserves its Silver award. Together with areas of achievement that were highlighted, areas for Improvement were also given. Areas for Improvement were as follows: • Start a “Bloom” committee and publicise achievements • Create some display boards of the year’s work for presentation to further our Bloom campaign • Try to obtain sponsorship from local businesses • Continue the improvements in the Garden of Rest (Straw Bear Garden) • Before judging attend to general ground maintenance care by weeding, dead heading and litter picks • Improve the management of the Lattersey Nature Reserve to make it more accessible • Involve more children in the Bloom campaign

by approaching schools and other youth groups “In Bloom” is not just about flowers. The core pillars of “In Bloom” are as follows: • Horticultural Achievement • Environmental Responsibility • Community Participation The involvement of children in the “In Bloom” campaign is already underway. Park Lane and Alderman Jacobs Schools have already been approached and are willing to work with us for “In Bloom”. Watch out New Road you haven’t been forgotten. Any project which is undertaken needs photographic support which can be included in the portfolio for submission with the entry; i.e. before, during and after. If you have not yet been approached please don’t think you won’t be. If you want to be involved please make contact with me either by telephone – 01733 204944 - or by email at kayfmayor@hotmail.co.uk . Volunteers are what are needed; if you are keen to help in any way or if you have expertise in a particular area please get in touch. Your Whittlesey In Bloom campaign needs you.

Local History

Robert George Scott VC, DSO By Geoff Oldfield

T

his month, of course sees services held to remember those who went to war, but never returned. There are also those whose great bravery could have resulted in their death but somehow they miraculously survived and received their due reward with a medal. I have previously written about John Henry Searby DSO, DFC who was born in Whittlesey and served as a master bomber, illuminating targets to be bombed in Germany. Robert George Scott was also born in Whittlesey on 22nd April 1857 in fact. He was the son of Robert Charles Scott, a fleet Surgeon in the Royal Navy, and Mary Elizabeth, a daughter of the Rev. Richard Sinclair. In 1861, he was staying at the Bank House in Almshouse Street (Now Market Street) where his mother’s uncle George B Andrews was manager of the Bank. He was educated at Epsom College and Burney’s and being of an adventurous spirit went to South Africa and in 1876, then nineteen years of age, found service to his liking in the Border Regiment, the Cape Mounted Rifles. It was during the Kaffir Wars (1877-1879) that he was awarded the Victoria Cross. On 9th April 1879during an attack on Morosi’s Mountain, the Basuto enemy were bringing heavy and accurate fire on the Colonial Troops from behind a series of stone barricades. Scott, now a sergeant, with seven men gallantly volunteered to creep up at night to the first

barricade and toss over it shells with lighted fuses to drive the enemy marksmen back. As the bugles sounded ‘Advance’, Scott and his party flung their lighted shells over the barricades successfully clearing the defenders and the Colonial Riflemen took the position. Scott however, was carried to the rear for treatment of his wounds, the third shell having exploded prematurely in his hand, shattering it to pieces. The resulting shrapnel injured himself and three others in the party. The hand had to be amputated, but he survived the experience and he was made a Lieutenant. His VC was Gazetted on 1st October 1980. He returned to England in 1881, having retired from the Cape Mounted Rifles and was living in Chelsea. Here he met Constance Mary Daniell and on the 8th April 1885 they were married and had four children, three sons and one daughter. He eventually returned to South Africa and served as a major in the Kimberley Light Horse and during the 2nd Boer War (1899-1902) was mentioned in Dispatches, receiving the Queen’s Medal with three clasps and the King’s Medal with two clasps. He also received the Distinguished Service Order. Proudly in association with Wright's of Whittlesey

Our faces will not be new to many of you but we are new to the pages of Discovering Whittlesea. We are priests and vicars in the Church of England and we want to keep you in touch with your Parish Church. There are four Parishes covering the area reached by this magazine - Holy Trinity Coates including Eastrea and Turves, St. Thomas’ Pondersbridge, Whittlesey St. Andrew’s and Whittlesey St. Mary’s.

W

e have been your vicars for nine and a half years. In that time we have stood by you in times of joy and sadness, of celebration and Remembrance. The ministry of the Church of England is not just the work of its vicars. The ministry is shared with our Lay Ministers Roger Brown and John Chrisp, Churchwardens, Church Council members and others in our congregations. Our parish churches are a focus for worship in many forms and on many occasions. They are the venue for the regular celebration of Holy Communion. As commanded by Jesus at his Last Supper this is the principle way by which we remember what He did for us by His death on the cross and His resurrection to life eternal. Worship of God is also experienced within the many Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals that take place. Our ministry is to church and community. Time is spent in the local schools with pupils and staff. November is always a very important month in the pike anglers calendar as our local club Whittlesey AA host the prestigious Angling Trust National Pike Fishing Championship. The fen drains around Whittlesey are renowned for top quality specimen fishing, it has not been uncommon to hear of several 20lb plus fish being recorded through the colder months of the year. The match takes a lot of organising and requires a lot of time and trouble preparing for the big event which I am sure the club will undertake in their usual precise and calm manner. Conditions for the big match often dictate just how good the fishing is going to be, a cool overcast day with the waters holding a little colour make for ideal pike fishing, lets hope everything works out for the club. Winter fishing for roach, skimmers, bream and tench on the waters around

Whittlesey should also see anglers coming over to fish the area, but after a wet early summer with plenty of rain there seems to be little colour flowing through the system and that in turn has seen catches nowhere near as good as we usually expect. Whittlesey Dyke that runs at the back of the town rarely lets you down though and is the one section well worth a visit, particularly if you enjoy bread punch fishing. Cock Bank is another venue you must try out, the better pegs in the 50’s around the Burnt House Bridge nearly always produce fish. Some very big perch live in these pegs with anglers fishing good old fashioned worms to tempt them. The Twenty Foot Drain has not been fished so much this season, but one or two anglers have reported good nets of skimmers and bream from Beggars Bridge and down the bottom end at Goosetree Corner. If we get some rain and the drains colour up then wrap up warm, get the tackle out and give our local waters a try, you won’t be disappointed. Do not forget our local still waters, winter fishing is not always that easy on the likes of Railway Lakes, Kingsland or even Decoy Lakes, but take a few red maggots and a tin of sweetcorn and you will be amazed at the catches that you can achieve even with a frost on the ground!

A word from

Whittlesey Christian Church An 8 Year Old Explains God

When I found this I thought it was something which just had to be shared, I’ve abbreviated it, but I hope it brightens your day and makes you smile. One of God’s main jobs is making new people to replace the ones that die so there will be enough to take care of things on earth. He doesn’t make grown-ups, just babies and leaves such things as teaching them to walk and talk to moms & dads. My dad says that God put us here for a purpose, so I figure He can take me back anytime He pleases. God’s second most important job is listening to prayers, this keeps Him very busy as an awful lot of this goes on, so God doesn’t have time to watch TV or play games. All these prayers must make an awful lot of noise in Gods ears, unless He’s thought of a way to turn it down. God sees and hears everything so it’s no good wasting His time by going over your parent’s heads and asking Him for something they said you can’t have. Jesus is God’s Son and did all the hard work like walking on water, doing miracles, and worst of all trying to teach people who didn’t want to listen about God. Some of these hated Him and got Him crucified, but He still loved and forgave them. Anyway, God (His Dad) figured He’d done all He could on earth and didn’t have to go out on the road again so He took Him back to heaven. His job now is to be like a secretary, only more important, because he takes care of all those things it’s not

worth bothering God about. This way God can make sure there is always someone on duty to take care of those who love Him, like me. You should always go to Church on Sunday because this makes God happy and if there’s anyone you need to make happy it’s God. It’s wrong to skip church to do things like going to the shops or the beach, anyway the sun doesn’t come out on the beach until mid-day and the shops are open on other days. If you don’t believe in God like atheists you will be very lonely because your parents and friends can’t always be with you, but God can. You need Him around, especially when you’re scared because it’s dark or you can’t swim and you get thrown into deep water by big kids.

A word from Cllr Martin Curtis

Over the last month there have been two significant issues for Whittlesey, one good and one bad. I’ll start with the bad – and I’m sure most people know what this is. As I reported last month, on 29th August the proposed Sainsbury Superstore and Country Park was approved at the planning committee, at the same meeting a Tesco was refused. However, much to my amazement, three weeks later, in a way that has been strongly challenged, the decision to refuse the Tesco store was overturned and converted to an approval. There is not much more to say about this. I daren’t say what the current situation is because between writing this and Discovering Whittlesey dropping through your letterbox, things are certain to have changed. However, I have fought hard for Whittlesey on this issue and I pledge to continue doing so. Probably the best way of staying up to date on what is happening is through either the local press or my twitter account or blog. The success story relates to the campaign that we ran in Whittlesey to overturn the Boundary Commissions proposals to move Whittlesey into a

Peterborough South Constituency. The Commission published its revised proposals in mid-October and thankfully, they have changed their plans; they now propose keeping the Cambridgeshire North East constituency and keep us where we belong. However, these are still just proposals, so I would again encourage people to write to the boundary commission and express their views. There is a link between the supermarket problem and the Boundary Commission report. The report into the revised Parliamentary Boundaries mentioned in their proposal that representation from Whittlesey people was what led them to visit the Town and make the change they did; we have also been encouraging people to write to Fenland District Council to express their views about supermarkets. Your voice can make a difference, please do not be afraid to use it. Tel: 07887808442 | Email: mjc@martincurtis.net W: www.martincurtis.net | T: @cllrmcurtis

Garden Jobs for

November N ow that we are well into autumn it’s a good idea to raise containers and pots on feet or bricks to prevent them getting waterlogged. Terracotta pots should be moved somewhere milder as not all are frostproof and they might shatter. Group all your pots together so they can hold each other up against strong winds. Cover your compost heaps through the winter months to prevent them from getting too wet and turning into a slimy mess. Continue to add suitable material as it comes to hand. If you are planning a bonfire for Guy Fawkes or to dispose of garden material not suitable for composting, be sure to check around first for sleepy hedgehogs. If you have some spare logs and leaves they can be piled up somewhere dry and quiet, creating a perfect little nest for hibernating animals. With fires and the central heating on houseplants can soon dry out. Keep them cool and moist by frequently spraying them with a fine mist of water. The onset of winter isn’t all doom and gloom. Plant out colourful winter bedding such as ornamental cabbages, pansies, violas, cyclamen and heathers. Hydrangeas can be pruned from winter through to early spring. Unlike other plants that like a good hack, hydrangeas benefit from not being pruned too low or they produce too many leaves and not enough flowers. Cutting back old flower heads to the second pair of buds is best. If you want to ensure the colour of your blooms, add bluing tonic for blue flowers or lime for pink flowers.

Plant of the month facts

Trees Autumn is the ideal time for planting trees when the soil is still warm but not too dry. Give ne wly planted trees a good start in life by diggin g plenty of wellrotted organic matter int o the planting hole and provide a sturdy sta ke to stop windrock loosening the roots while the tree becomes established. Trees are the ultimate arc hitectural plant adding structure and es sential height to gardens of all sizes. W hile limited space can obviously rule out pla nting majestic oaks and beeches there are plenty of smaller but equally beau tiful trees to choose from. Autumn is the perfect time of year to give your favourite tools an MOT and a good oiling. Give them a wash and make sure they are completely dry before putting away for the winter.

Posture and its affect on the body

By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Varsani (Registered Osteopaths) This month we will explore how our environment and habitual activities effects our posture. After reading this article, you will appreciate its effects on our body and how osteopathy can help neutralize these. Posture is essentially the resting position of our body. This is partially defined by a) our joint alignment, and b) the summation of muscle pulls throughout our body. Our joint alignment changes as we age due to wear & tear in our joints. As the surfaces change, the body adapts its neutral position to ensure minimum pain and maximum stability. For example, turning an arthritic hip inwards is difficult due to the bony changes therefore the patient holds the hip rotated outwards which therefore affects their overall posture. Seating

= shortened muscles

Secondly, tension patterns are formed via our muscle tone. This is determined by our repetitive daily activities for which the body adopts a most appropriate posture. For example, a desk worker spends the majority of their time sitting. Thus his/her body would adopt the muscle tone to suit sitting, i.e. as the diagram shows shortened muscles at the back of the legs and longer at the front. Although this is helpful for seating, it will put abnormal stresses on his/her joints when performing other activities and limit their mobility. E.g. bending forward as the diagram depicts.

Where osteopathy can help is by stretching the shortened muscles. This counteracts the negative effects giving you greater mobility and reducing the chance of muscle / joint problems in the future. That is why many patients chose to visit us regularly, almost like an MOT.

Bending forward

= shortened muscles

And then there were three... Kim and Andrew became the official parents of their adopted two year old son James in June. We went along to meet them at their home to hear their story.

K

im had a condition which made it difficult to conceive and when they learnt they would have less than a 10 per cent chance of conceiving through IVF they thought about adoption instead. “Some of our friends had adopted successfully through Peterborough City Council, so we went to an information evening which we found very interesting and enlightening” Kim recalls. “A social worker came to see us to talk about the practicalities. You have to be prepared to be asked all sorts of questions which can be difficult. We spent the next few months getting our house ready before we heard we could go on the adoption course.” After the course, a period of home study continued for the couple with visits from a social worker. Kim and Andrew described it as intensive but necessary. Three months later, Kim and Andrew had to go before a panel. They were asked many questions, some quite hard, but at the end they were approved. “I was so happy that I burst into tears and just wanted to kiss everyone,” Kim laughs. “We thought it was going to be months before anything happened.“ “Then a call came four weeks later. Our social worker, who could not have been more helpful and supportive, told us they had a child. He was a 12 month old boy whose parents had had problems and they were not able to look after him. “We were told that while he had struggles very early in his life he had been with the same foster carer since he was just a few months old and that he been cared for in a very stable and happy environment. I did not want to see his photo initially in case the process did not go any further, but then when I did get to see his picture I fell in love with him then and there. It suddenly became all very real and overwhelming.” They had a health and safety visit and then another panel where it was agreed Kim and Andrew were a match for James. A weeklong introduction process began with Kim and Andrew visiting James at his foster carer’s home. “Our social worker came into the room carrying James and put him into my arms and said ‘meet your son’,” Andrew recalls. “He blew

me a raspberry and that was it. We just got on the floor and started pushing cars around.” “We met every day for the next week, building up our time with him. One morning we got there early so that we could get him up, give him his breakfast, bath him and get him dressed. The day after that we put him to bed, and eventually towards the end of the week we brought him home for a while before eventually bringing him home for good.” That was a year ago and since then it has just been an incredible time for the new family. They gradually introduced James to the rest of his new extended family. Then in June, all travelled with their social worker to the court for the official adoption hearing before a judge when James legally became their son. James has a life story book so that he will always know of his background and where he came from. “We met up with James’s mother, who is not with his father anymore. She said she was pleased that James was with us. BOWSER OLLARD & BENTLEY LOCAL SOLICITORS FOR LOCAL PEOPLE

Bowser Ollard & Bentley are a firm of local solicitors based in Wisbech and March that can trace its roots back over 150 years. We have provided a high quality and comprehensive range of legal services at a sensible cost to generations of people and businesses in the fenland area and beyond. Each issue we respond to a selection of legal queries put to us by the readers of Discovering Whittlesea magazine.

Your Questions Answered! If you have a legal question that you would like answered please write to us or email legal.corner@bowsers.co.uk. If you would like your query to remain anonymous, please expressly state this in your correspondence to us.

: I am separated and want to divorce my husband. Is it true I have to wait for 2 years after we separate before I can file for divorce? Mrs X, Whittlesey

: About a year ago I was seriously injured at work. I made a personal injury claim and received some money but now think I should have received more. Is there anything I can do? Mr G, Whittlesey common one as many people feel they have received under-value settlements for personal injury claims. It has recently been reported that a large number of people have sought further legal advice and subsequently obtained vastly increased sums of money. For example, one person who was originally awarded £16,000 is said to have later won a case worth £700,000! Under-value settlements are often the result of a combination of factors including the use of underqualified staff who fail to understand medical reports, a lack of face-to-face contact with clients and law firms who aim to process a large amount of claims in an extremely short period of time. If you think that you have received an under-value settlement, please book an appointment to see one of our personal injury specialists who will be able to

Q A

: No. In order to satisfy the Court that you are entitled to a divorce, it is necessary for you to show that the marriage has broken down “irretrievably” and that you have been married for over 1 year. The Court Application to get a divorce, called a Petition, then has to show why there has been the “irretrievable breakdown”. The 2 years’ separation is one way of doing that but you do have to show that your Husband agrees to the Divorce procedure going ahead. Please contact us if you would like some further advice on this matter.

Please send us your questions for next month’s issue!

We offer expert legal advice in a number of areas including Conveyancing, Family Law, Wills & Probate, Business Law, Disputes & General Litigation and Personal Injury. ho can forget the Men in Black films; they’re fun, funny, and starred the multi-talented Will Smith. In the third instalment of the franchise, Agent J (will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) return. When K’s life and the fate of the planet are put in danger by a charismatic enemy, Boris the Animal (played by Jermaine Clement, one half of the comedy duo Flight of the Conchords), who wants to take revenge for being imprisoned on the Moon for the past 40 years, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the Universe which K never told him – secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with young Agent K (Josh Brolin), to save his partner, the agency, and the future of the humankind. Director Barry Sonnenfeld delivers a satisfying sequel that hits all of the marks. The addition of Brolin as the young Tommy Lee is a triumph. There are also moments, just like the original film, where you see comedy aliens possessed with improbable physical attributes (such as an alien with a detachable head). With a love interest for K, an exploration of his relationship with his distant father, and some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments, Men in Black 3 is well worth a watch this month. We now repair DVD/Game discs NOVEMBER RELEASES

This year it will be held on Friday 14th December. Centred upon the Market Square, all the fun of the fair kicks off from 5.30pm until 8pm. Business Forum put this event on to thank the local residents for their support through the last year, so please come along and have some fun.

Celebrating Harvest at ALPHABET DAY NURSERY Here at Alphabet we have been busy celebrating Harvest and learning where vegetables and fruit grow. We were all very excited to have a very special visit from a local farmer who came to see us in his tractor. Lots of fun was had exploring the tractor, climbing in and steering with the huge wheel. We’ve also been very busy making collage vegetables, sewing pictures and learning songs.

Pride of the Fens steam engine and the Thursford organ will be there with the local Fire Engine. We have kiddies rides and lots of local Charities will be offering treats and tombolas. New Road Molly will be our fabulous first act and the Cambridgeshire Caledonian Pipe band are performing. Father Christmas has a new home this year. Whittlesey and District Ladies Circle have kindly agreed to decorate and ‘elf’ (help!)in Santa’s Grotto in Hubs garden. Many thanks to Barry and Alison at Hubs for their generosity. Please put the date in your diary now...you know you’ll enjoy it!!!

Delivering Simple Financial Advice - That really works

A monthly feature that focuses on current financial issues. Many local Banks and Building Societies have lost their ‘in house’ adviser and few are independent. Eamonn is a fully qualified local Independent Financial Adviser.

Long Term Care planning

A

Ask the expert today

s soon as someone reaches a particular point in their life when they are unable or unwilling to care for themselves – care needs to be provided for them. The discussion then begins: Who should pay for it and what does it cost?

• If there is a gap between the cost of care and the level of income – what are the options? Firstly it is important to ensure every benefit available is being claimed • Secondly will the local authority pay or will the NHS provide funding?

Currently if the beneficiary has £23,250 or more – the answer is likely to be ‘You pay for your own care until the value of your assets drop below that level’. If you own a property – will that be taken into account? – i.e. will I have to sell my home? The answer is not the same in all circumstances, there are situations under which a property may be disregarded – it makes sense to talk with a specialist Long Term Care adviser such as myself.

• Thirdly – can an accumulating debt be charged against a property and settled when the property is sold without accruing interest?

How much will care cost and how much might the local authority contribute? Again the answer differs depending on many factors including the level of care in terms of time and specialisation, the location of the care, and in which area you live (believe it or not).

• Fourthly, can a lump sum deliver a level of income regardless of how long care is needed? As you might imagine – knowing your way around this complex subject is the key to making better decisions. If you are involved in this or you know someone struggling with it – give me a call on any of the following contact details:
