I

t’s been another busy month for me; having moved house only recently, I am now busily preparing our new home for it’s first Christmas - Shiels style! This decision to make some home improvements means that I am typing away to the sound of floor boards being cut and gently teased into place. I definitely shouldn’t complain though, it’s looking lovely. So it’s December already, and yes it’s time to start thinking about Christmas. Hopefully this month’s front cover has got you feeling all festive. Turn to page 7 to read about our mystery designer. If that wasn’t enough, we also have the dates and time of this year’s Christmas float, so there’s no excuse not to get merry this month! I’m excited to announce that we also have a great fashion piece, brought to you by Sophie Mulqueen, Retail Assistant Shop Manager at Sue Ryder, and fashion queen. Sophie proves that you don’t have to spend hundreds of pounds to get a fabulous look! Turn to pages 44 and 45 for more of Sophie’s great tips. For where to go and what to do this month, turn to pages 8 and 9 for our festive events, plus our usual monthly events page 21. Got an event to share with us, email me at the details on this page and where possible, I will always try to include it. My deadline runs to around the 12th of the month proir to publication. Finally, I would like to wish all of my readers, advertisers and contributors a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! For me it has been a lovely year, full of excitement and hard work, but 2013 is looking to be an even better one with an addition to our family. Until then, have a lovely December and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for a little bit of snow...

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA

And our winner is... For the first time, Discovering Whittlesea decided to invite the community to design the front cover. This year we invited pupils of Park Lane Primary School to submit a design. And what a difficult choice we had. Kay Mayor explains: “Sue and I were pleased to be asked by Natasha to help judge the competition for the cover design of this month’s magazine. It is the first time that the magazine has done this and this year it is Years 5 and 6 from Park Lane School that were asked to come up with a cover design. The standard of designs was extremely high which gave us a very difficult task. I hope that you will agree that Chloe Paige Adcock‘s design is splendid and a worthy winner.” I hope you all enjoy our beautifully designed front cover for our Christmas issue. We were heartwarmed by the response and the brilliant designs, so much so that we’ve decided to make this a regular feature and will invite a different primary school to submit designs for the next cover.

Thank you to the staff and children of Park Lane School, and a special thank you to Chloe for her beautiful design.

Remembrance Day Words by Kay Mayor Pictures by Ashley Hyde

The end of October once again saw the launch of the Poppy Appeal for 2012; we thank Judy and Ray for their hard work once again leading up to and on Remembrance Day. This year Remembrance Day, 11th day of the 11th month fell on a Sunday, the usual day for our Parades and laying of wreaths. In my November article I asked for your support and support it you did. Was it because it was actually on a Sunday or did I imagine that there were more people at both Coates for the morning service and at Whittlesey for the afternoon service? It was a truly splendid turnout and our thanks need to go to the Royal British Legion members, the Parade Marshall John Bradshaw and the Clergy for their help and to all the organisations that took part in the parade. This year there was a PA system provided for us by David Bailey which helped immensely in the service at the Memorial being heard by everyone, so our thanks to David; and last but not least it would be wrong of me not to thank our Town Clerk, Sue Evans, who this year has had more input in pulling the whole event together. Park Lane Bazaar

It's December so it must be time for Park Lane School's Christmas Bazaar!

The Bazaar will take place on Friday 14th December from 3.30pm to 5pm at Park Lane School and will have all of our usual favourites like the Games, Cake Stall and the Tombola Stalls. As well as these there will be a Parent Free Zone where the children will be able to choose or make a gift for their parents and have it wrapped by our EIT's (Elves in Training!!) so it will be a surprise for the big day!! Our Raffle tickets will be on sale on the day and we have many prizes including a 1st prize of £100 Love to Shop Vouchers and 2nd Prize of a Christmas Hamper. Of course our Bazaar would not be the same without a visit from Santa so make sure you have all been good! FOPLS would like to extend their thanks to the businesses of Whittlesey for their continued support of our work and wish you all a very Merry Christmas! We hope to see you there!

Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee

Following the recent street collection, the Committee would like to thank everyone who supported us.

We collected £171.32. Many of the people work voluntarily to help erect the lights but we do have to pay £3,000 for lifting equipment, VAT and professional electrical services to erect and dismantle, which is a requirement under Health & Safety regulations. The Committee would like to take the opportunity of thanking Fred Johnson and Stan Ringham, who for so many years have voluntarily worked in cold and wet weather to help the professionals accomplish the usual fantastic display.

This year’s

Christmas Tree Festival

Don’t forget to pay a visit to this year’s Christmas Tree Festival. Once again the Friends of St Mary’s Church, Whittlesey have been busy arranging this year’s Christmas Tree Festival and will be open on the Friday 14th December from 10am to 8pm to coincide with the Business Forum Christmas Extravaganza. The Church will also be open on Saturday and Sunday at 10 am until 5pm and close on the Sunday for 6pm for their lovely Carol Service, with thanks to the Clergy, Choir and Band. A Kay word from Mayor I don’t know about you but I just cannot believe that another year is nearly over. I remember that I was told when I was approaching 21 years of age that once you reach that milestone the years go quicker. Of course you don’t want to believe it and of course each year is the same, 365(6) days, so how can it? Milestones come and milestones go but I do now believe it – time really does fly. Since my last article I have attended several Civic Services. These services give the Town Mayors and Councils the opportunity to bring together Civic dignitaries from other Towns and representatives from within its own community to celebrate and commend their work. Sunday 28 October saw our own Civic Service at St Andrews Church which was followed by a reception. It was once again a wonderful service and I thank the Reverends Nigel and Gill for their help in putting together the service and also the Army Cadets and Park Lane School choir for their input on the day. A close relationship has developed between our Town and the American Community at Alconbury and the surrounding area and this year on Monday 12 November, I was very proud to be able to lay a wreath at the American Veterans Day Service at Madingley. In some respect this also brought family a bit closer, as many of you will know that we have an American daughter-inlaw and grandchildren. It felt more than right that we should pay our respects to our allies. The Town Council offices moved from the Town Hall to Grosvenor House two years ago. Grosvenor House is the white building opposite the car park in Grosvenor Road (off Eastgate). To comply with disability legislation a stair lift has now been installed at Grosvenor House and a debate was held at the Council meeting

Ladysmith W.I The last meeting of the year for members of Ladysmith W.I. is a Christmas Party with a Secret Santa gift exchange and raffle on Tuesday 11th December at 7pm in St Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane. Music for a seasonal singsong will be provided by members Betty Hughes

on Wednesday 14 November about the venue for future Town Council meetings. It was subsequently agreed by a majority vote that Council Meetings will be held at Grosvenor House for a trial period of six months. All other Committee meetings are currently held at Grosvenor House.

Kay Mayor

As mentioned in my September article Grosvenor House has rooms on the first floor which are now available to lease or hire. Negotiations are current for the letting of one office from January 2013 which leaves one office to let and the large meeting room available for meetings on a part/ whole day basis. If you know of an organisation looking for a base in Whittlesey or just wanting to hire the meeting room please contact the Town Clerk, Mrs Susan Evans by telephone on 01733 351296 or by email at whittleseytowncouncil@ btconnect.com. There are several Civic Carol Services already in the diary for December and of course we have our Extravaganza to look forward to on Friday 14 December, starting at 5.30 p.m. Please support this event along with St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival which starts on 14th and concludes on Sunday 16th with a Service of Carols and Lessons in St Mary’s Church starting at 6.00 p.m. Finally it just remains for me to wish you all, on behalf of the Town Council, a Very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.

‘Til 2013..

Kay

Street Pride’s ‘Big Dig’

aturday 27th October was Street Prides fourth annual bulb planting project. We decided this year to concentrate on two sites. Our small group braved the very cold Northerly winds, and were joined by some fantastic help and support from the Peterborough Payback Team lead by Kenny Carrington. We planted the following at Kings Delph Truck Stop: 3,000 Narcissus Tahiti, 3,000 Narcissus Gigantic Star, 3,000 Narcissus Mount Hood and 1,000 Mixed Narcissus - a grand total of 10,000 bulbs. At our Plough Road/Jubilee Garden site we planted 1,000 Snowdrops and 1,000 Crocus we will all wait for spring to arrive. Whittlesea Street Pride are very grateful to the following (listed below) for their very generous support in donations/sponsorship of this project: The McCain Community Fund The Whittlesey Widows Club Councillor Allan Bristow Inspirations Market Street Mr & Mrs C J Osborne The Whittlesey Lions Mr & Mrs John Palmer Mr Mike Lee Aster Cars Fenland First Aid Services RWS Ltd Whittlesey Mr & Mrs Martin Whittlesey Town Council

As usual a litterpick took place at our favourite place; nearly five TONS of rubbish and litter were removed from this one site alone since we started on it five years ago. So why not join us for a ‘New Year’ Litterpick and walk around the town on Tuesday 1st January 2013. We will be meeting at the Market Place at 10:00am - why not blow away a few cob-webs left over from Christmas and New Year! All pupils brought 1p and 2p coins in with them which they then placed onto the school playground in giant spots. Finally everyone stood together to form the shape of a massive Pudsey. Lots of children have also been running their own competitions and raffles, which has been fantastic to see! Year 6 pupils counted up all the money that has been raised and our total so far is £400 with some money still be collected.

Date for your diary...

Open Evening at Park Lane School for parents of reception children due to start in September 2013 on Tuesday 4th December 6.00 – 7.00.

thankyou

On Tuesday 4th December, New Road Pre-school and New Road Primary School Reception Class will be having an Open Morning from 10.00 am to 11.30 am. Do you have a child who is nearly three or already three and are you looking for a pre-school, or do you need a place at Primary School? If so, come along and join in some Christmas activities. Meet some of our parents and the friendly staff. New Road Pre-school has been open since 1985. The Pre-school is a voluntary committee run charity pre-school. We operate a free-flow system so children can choose whether to play indoors or outdoors. A wide range of activities is on offer. We have an allotment where the children grow fruit and vegetables (which we then cook and eat at pre-school), have a weekly ‘Mojo’ exercise session and a weekly ‘Forest Thursday’ which includes trips to the local nature reserve, den building, bug collecting, and many other exciting activities where we encourage independent thinking. New Road Primary School opened in 1980. The Foundation Stage class has a large attractive indoor area and also an outdoor classroom. The Foundation Stage teacher, teaching assistant and the children would be very happy to welcome you and show you around. Come along and join the fun. For further information telephone New Road Pre-school: 01733 685404 or New Road Primary School: 01733 204422

Janet and Alan Smith would like to say a big thankyou to everyone who made Ian Smith’s Charity Disco a huge success. The prizes that Whittlesey businesses, friends and family donated were amazing and we cannot thank you enough. A special thanks also go to Jo, Jamie, Hayley, Roddy, John, Graham and everyone else who helped - without them the evening wouldn't have been the fantastic night that it was. A grand total of £3,000 was raised for Thorpe Hall, Peterborough, where Ian spent three weeks before passing away at home aged 34 after a long battle with a brain tumour. This is going to be used to support the patients and their families during their stay there. So once again thank you, and look out for next years event! December 2012 | Discovering

Local History

Ronald George Ashman by Geoff Oldfield I have written before about Kings Dyke and what a close knit self contained community it was. They had their School, Chapel and Sports Field. The sporting facilities gave opportunity for the Locals, especially footballers, to hone their skills. They had their own football team playing in the local league with several players making a name for themselves.

N

one more so than Ronald George Ashman. He was born on 19th May 1926 to George and Annie who kept the local general store. He was playing his football for the Air Training Corps in the Eastern Counties League when spotted by Norwich City and taken on their books. But soon after, he became a ‘Bevin Boy’ being called up to serve in a Nottingham coal mine to help the war effort. Norwich City allowed him to combine his pit duties with playing for Peterborough United who were a non-league side at the time. Working in the pit soon affected his health and he was discharged and spent 18 months in the RAF before signing as a professional with Norwich City in January 1946 as a promising centre forward. He made his league debut at home against Aldershot in October the following year but manager Norman Low recognised his skills were not being put to the best use and converted him from centre forward into a defensive half back. He spent his whole playing career at Norwich City which comprised of 662 games- a club record- and scored 56 goals. The Football League at this time was divided into the First Division, Second Division and Third Divisions North & South. He was captain of the Third Division team that in 1959 reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup. On the way they beat Manchester United’s “Busby Babes” 3-0 followed by victories over Cardiff City, Tottenham Hotspurs and Sheffield United before being overcome by Luton Town after a reply. He led Norwich City to promotion to the Second Division a year later and held aloft the League Cup in 1962 beating Rochdale in the

final. He became acting manager that year and took on the job full time in1963, by which time he had ended his playing career. Mediocre results caused him to lose his job in 1966 ending a 20 years service with the club. A year later he took over the reins at Scunthorpe and was their manager from 1967 to 1973 and again from 1976 to 1981. In between those two spells, he was manager at Grimsby Town. While manager at Scunthorpe he gave a promising teenager, called Kevin Keegan, his debut in the team to play Peterborough United and later transferred him to Liverpool for £35,000 where Bill Shankly was manager. Keegan of course went on to play for and captain the England football team and also become it’s manager. Ron was both liked and respected – “a cultivated fellow with strong religious convictions”- who found playing easier than managing. After leaving Scunthorpe in 1981 he ran the transport side of a Travel Agency in the Town. He died in Scunthorpe on 21st June 2004 aged 78 years. Proudly in association with Wright's of Whittlesey

A word from Revd Nigel and Revd Gill December, in the Christian Church, is a time of preparation and celebration. It is the season when we focus on the coming into the world of Jesus and the meaning of this event, not only for us but also for millions of people all over the world.

A

s Christians we not only remember the birth of a baby in a far off time and land but we also give witness to our faith that Jesus is the Son of God. In Jesus the divine and human come wonderfully and completely together; all it means to be God and all it means to be human in this one person. Often told as a story for children we hear people say Christmas is for children. There is truth in this but just think about the faith claims that are made about Jesus. He is the Son of God. He worked miracles which included bringing the dead to life, he taught with passion and persuasion, he died and was raised to life, he established the church. Is this a life story for children? Yes, and for adults too. In fact the Christmas story about a child told for adults is to be shared with children. To accept the heart of Christmas is a life changing experience. It means accepting that God is one with us in our very human and everyday lives.

Fishing News

This time of year is so important for us as it marks the beginning of the Church’s year. Advent is our New Year and begins on Sunday, 2nd December. It is a time of preparation for Christmas with candles, calendars and extra services - Christmas is rapidly approaching. For you is Advent just the hype and stress of shopping for Christmas gifts and food, the pressure of your children’s expectations and your own? Or do you use it as a time to prepare to receive Jesus, the Christ Child, into your hearts and lives on Christmas Day, the festival for young and old alike. We invite you to share with us the Church’s celebrations on this joyful occasion and look forward to seeing many of you at our Christmas services, details of which can be found elsewhere in this magazine. We wish you all a holy and happy time.

By Ken Wade

Although quite a few anglers put their fishing tackle away throughout the winter months, at times they are missing out on some cracking action. Winter hotspots such as the Old Nene at March and Whittlesey Dyke hold good stocks of roach that often see’s anglers netting double figure weights even on the coldest of days. Bread punch often scores well at this time of the year but always have a few pinkie’s or maggots with you too. Pike anglers have been having a really good time on our local waters and in the recent Angling Trust Pike Championship fished on the Whittlesey Twenty Foot Drain and Glassmoor Bank close to 100 fish where weighed in. Unfortunately despite a large local contingent not one of our anglers made the main prize list. Hinckley angler Darryl

Moore took the honours on the day with a brace of fish weighing a total of 36lb 4oz, the catch taken from the Twenty Foot Drain saw Darryl scoop the £1600 main prize. Runner up was Tony Billson, he also had two fish going to the scales at 36lb 2oz followed by Chris Preen on 18lb 2oz. Stillwaters in the area have found it tough going as usual through the Angling picture of Pike Champion winter months but if Darryl Moore you can get out onto the bank after a few days of milder weather then the chances of putting a good catch together are greatly increased. Red maggot will be your best bait, but make sure you scale down the tackle, lighter lines, small hooks and small baits will be the order of the day.

A word from

Whittlesey Christian Church Do We Try To ‘Manage’ Or Deal With Anger?

I recently taught on the subject of ‘The Danger Of Anger’ here is a very brief excerpt from it. Anger Takes Things Out Of Your Control Anger is uncontrolled emotion and dangerous because it creates the opportunity for things to escalate beyond our control. This is a true but tragic story. In April 1994 the Chicago Tribune reported a tragic accident showing the terrible power of anger. With their 2 children in the back a couple drove their 4x4 along Chicago’s Northwest Highway. An ex-convict driving a white Cadillac began tailgating them so the 4x4 driver slowed down. Once the Cadillac driver had overtaken him he deliberately cut in front of him causing him to swerve to avoid a collision. The Cadillac sped away and the other driver accelerated and gave chase, eventually pulling alongside the Cadillac he began yelling and screaming. According to a witness, the two men gestured angrily at each other. Suddenly the ex-convict pulled out a gun and fired into the 4x4 the bullet hit the baby girl, entering under her left ear and exiting above her right ear. The little girl lived, but she is blind in one eye, half-blind in the other, partially deaf, and suffers severe mental and physical disabilities. While the ex-convict was sent back to jail, the father however must now live with the terrible pain of regret for his angry reaction. There Really Is No Justification For Uncontrolled Anger With a family of 8 my parents strictly forbad angry outbursts but encouraged healthy discussion of any disagreements. Till my parents died I never once heard or saw them angry, something I have always found

amazing and challenging. Anger Should Be Effectively Dealt With Not Simply ‘Managed’ Because anger has the potential to quickly escalate out of control and drive us to actions we later regret we should refuse to see it as an acceptable part of life. By its very nature anger will always seek to control you and needs to be effectively dealt with. God really does care and wants us to be free from things which cause harm to ourselves and others. If you suffer from, or still carry the emotional scars from exposure to anger don’t be afraid to call and begin your journey towards freedom, we do care. DON’T MISS OUR INSPIRATIONAL CHRISTIAN FAMILY CELEBRATION SUNDAY DECEMBER 23RD AT 10:45 Each year people appreciate the unique blend of traditional carols and presentations from the children, puppets, drama, dance and worship teams.

A word from Cllr Martin Curtis

I really enjoy finding out new things about Whittlesey and doing my bit to try and move the Town forwards. Whilst we are still in the middle of a complete mess as far as supermarkets are concerned, I have spent some time over the last few weeks thinking about what good can come out of it for Whittlesey (apart from eventually getting a supermarket!). One of the good things that has come out of it is the strong voice from the Town. Whilst many of my fellow Councillors and I have been part of that, it is also true that Whittlesey residents have made sure they are heard; that is a great thing. When you are lobbying for your town As a Councillor it always helps for there to be a strong voice behind you backing up what you are saying. It has also never been easier for those that are technology savvy to make yourself heard. Twitter and Facebook are great for this, but websites like Shape Your Place (http:// whittlesey.shapeyourplace.org) and Streetlife (http:// www.streetlife.com) provide a great platform for people to express their views and debate issues. Of course for those that don’t use technology, there is nothing wrong with a good letter.

I know that there are many issues that people care about, such as our town centre, Kings Dyke crossing and the need for an A605 bypass and they are all issues that your Councillors are lobbying for and working on, but the more Whittlesey people make their voices heard on these, the better. Another way I learn about Whittlesey is by meeting new people and finding out about the many groups around the Town. I really enjoy getting out, talking to organisations, learning from them and letting people ask questions and challenge me – so if you belong to a group and would like me to come along to meet you, please contact me and ask. As well as contacting me by telephone (07887808442) email (mjc@martincurtis.net) or twitter (@cllrmcurtis) I have now set up a Facebook page dedicated to my role as a Councillor, that can be found at www.facebook.com/whittleseynorth.

Garden Jobs for

December M

ost gardeners tend to think everything in the garden is dormant in December, but there are still plenty of things to do. Most of the jobs are to do with protecting crops, flowers and pond wildlife from the winter frost so go grab a warm winter jacket and some gloves and get into the garden. Any tender evergreen plants which are planted in the ground should be protected through the winter with a tent of horticultural fleece over them. Vulnerable perennials such as Penstemon should have a layer of straw or thick mulch placed over the crown of the plant. Plants in containers should be moved to an unheated greenhouse or sheltered part of the garden and the pots wrapped in bubble wrap if the weather is very severe. Keep an eye on the pond ensuring it doesn’t freeze over, especially if there are fish in it. An easy way to create an air hole is to keep a ball floating on the surface which can be easily lifted out when the pond freezes to reveal the water beneath. While the ground is still soft enough, plant or transplant deciduous trees and shrubs. Ideal plants for this time of year include early flowering magnolias, winter jasmine, quince and winter honeysuckle. If your ferns are looking a bit tatty, give them a Christmas haircut fairly near to the crown, just as the new growth is about to come through. If you give them a drop of liquid fertiliser after cutting they will look spritely and healthy in no time. Harvest parsnips, winter cabbage, leeks, sprouts and any other root crops you planted earlier in the year. If you put your harvests away for the winter, check them regularly and quickly remove any produce that shows the slightest sign of rot. Remember the saying about one bad apple spoiling the barrel. Continue to deadhead Winter Pansies and Violas to encourage more flowers through the milder weather. Check any containers planted with bulbs to make sure that they are not attacked by mice or voles.

Christmas Tree

For many people, the Ch ristmas tree is an essential part of the ir festive traditions. And a real Christmas tre e is really the only choice you should make when it comes to this important season al centrepiece for your home. Having the scent of fresh pine in your home is an other great smell to associate with Christm as, just like roast Turkey, cinnamon and Brandy Butter. A good quality, non-drop Christmas tree such as a Nordman will last for several weeks if it is cared for pro perly.

Plant of the month -

Cornus

Cornus alba 'Sibirica' has stunning bright red bark which adds colour to the winter garden. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, it produces the brightest winter bark when planted in full sun. To keep the size of the plant in check and to encourage the most colourful bark, remove a third of the stems back to ground level each spring.

Legal Corner

Your questions answered!

Your Questions Answered - for FREE! If you have a legal question that you would like answered please write to us or email legal.corner@bowsers.co.uk. If you would like your query to remain anonymous, please expressly state this in your correspondence to us.

Q

: I want to make a Will and have seen DIY legal packs at the shops which seem reasonably priced. Are DIY Wills legally valid? Ms P, Whittlesey

A

: DIY law kits may seem appealing because they are considered a cheap alternative to consulting a legal professional but we do not advise their use because a Will must conform to strict legal requirements or the Court may decide it is not valid. Problems may also arise if you use words which when written in a Will have a different legal meaning to their ordinary meaning. This could lead to your loved ones not receiving the extent of inheritance you originally intended or, if your Will is considered invalid, to your assets being divided amongst your (sometimes distant) relatives according to a pre-determined formula. We are able to help you make a Will which is reasonably priced and legally valid, thus ensuring that your loved ones will be taken care of in accordance with your wishes. Please contact us to arrange an appointment.

Q: My ex-partner and I recently separated. We

have a son together but she will now not let me have any say in his upbringing and says I have no rights because we were not married. Is this true? Mr O, Peterborough

A

: The law views parents as having responsibility for their children rather than rights over them, with the focus being on what is in the best interests of the child. Having “Parental Responsibility” (PR) for a child allows a parent to be equally involved in the decisions that will affect their child’s life. A child’s biological mother automatically acquires PR. Where both parents were married to each other the father also automatically acquires PR. However, as you were not married you would not automatically have acquired PR unless your son was born after December 2003 and you are named on the birth certificate. If your son was born before that date you must have acquired PR by either registering yourself as the father, reaching an agreement with your ex-partner (PR Agreement) or by obtaining a court order. Our team of family law specialists would be happy to help you establish whether you have (or help you to acquire) PR for your son.

C

hristopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises completes his personal trilogy focusing on socialite Bruce Wayne and his alter ego, Gotham City’s caped crusader. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises completes not only his personal trilogy focusing on socialite Bruce Wayne and his alter ego, Gotham City’s caped crusader, but also a cycle of popular culture that began in May 1939 when Batman was added to Detective Comics’ pantheon of superheroes. In a spectacular opening, a plane used by the CIA is hijacked in mid-air by a larger aircraft. Liberated by the manouvre is Bane (Tom Hardy), a muscular menace wearing a half-mask containing a voice box and a device that eases his constant pain. He’s an associate of the League of Shadows, the ancient eastern conspiratorial cult to which a mysterious stranger (Liam Neeson) initiated Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins and which Wayne renounced. Christian Bale plays the crippled Wayne, eight years as a recluse in Wayne Manor, tended by his faithful family butler, Alfred (Michael Caine). It isn’t until Gotham is attacked by Bane, that Wayne is forced back into his black suit to once again save the city. With an excellent cast, including Anne Hathaway (Catwoman), and special effects which are often breathtaking, The Dark Knight Rises is an intelligent film with epic, visual grandeur. This is a film not to be missed.

Festive fashion How to look good for less this year Words: Sophie Mulqueen

Pictures: Chris Brudenell

Models: Paige and Kelly

With the festive season just around the corner, our team at Sue Ryder are gearing up for the parties and mince pie filled nights by the tree! Whether you are planning a big Christmas day for your family and loved ones, or if you are concerned about what to wear to your annual works party, look no further!

At your local Sue Ryder shop we have a large variety of garments, accessories and shoes, and as our stock is changing daily, it’s always worth having a look, just to see if you can find that special gem for your festive wardrobe. All the garments, accessories and items pictured had been donated to our store, and are in the shop to buy, along with plenty of other wonderful things!

Outfit One

One handy accessory this holiday season, which is to not be overlooked, is an over sized handbag. Not only will this super sized bag give you plenty of room during those manic sale shopping trips, but it will also make a fashion statement and stand out as a key part of your daily outfits.

Outfit Two

Wearing patterned trousers can seem a bit intimidating, but this season is all about the print and the smart trousers to match. Try starting with some subtle patterns such as houndstooth or a muted tartan, and wear them with a single neutral colour. There are some great printed leggings and wide legged trousers around currently, so don’t be scared to experiment! 44

Discovering

Whittlesea | December 2012

Outfit Three

Sequins are always a winner at Christmas time. If wearing all over sequins doesn’t appeal to you, try a sequined bag, scarf or even a sequin trim on a cardigan or jacket.

Outfit Four

Cobalt Blue has been tipped as the colour to watch this season! There are some beautiful garments that utilise both the deep, bold blue and metallic tinges that are popular for every party season. Why not team a simple blue shirt with lots of silver jewellery, or mix it up with a cobalt pencil skirt and some metallic shoes.

Outfit Five

Metallic’s are tipped to be party colours every year, and as we at Sue Ryder have seen, the metallic colours around at the minute are gorgeous. Try pairing a metallic top with some smart trousers, This will make a normal pair of work trousers into a sophisticated party must have! They can work just as well under layers of jumpers and jackets, for a more casual look. Sue Ryder is a health and social care charity that provides end of life and long-term care for people living with complex conditions including cancer, stroke, dementia, Multiple Sclerosis and stroke. By shopping with us people will help the charity to raise vital funds that can be used to make a difference to the lives of the people we care for at our hospices, care centres and communitybased services across the country and locally at Thorpe Hall Sophie Mulqueen, Retail Assistant Shop Manager said: “The Whittlesey shop offers an array of good quality items, including a fantastic range of new and previously loved, good quality fashion and accessories at affordable prices.” December 2012 | Discovering

Delivering Simple Financial Advice - That really works

A monthly feature that focuses on current financial issues. Many local Banks and Building Societies have lost their ‘in house’ adviser and few are independent. Eamonn is a fully qualified local Independent Financial Adviser.

Later Life Adviser

Ask the expert today

I

am proud to confirm that I have been elected to the Society of Later Life Advisers, a prestigious independent organisation dedicated to link those who need advice with accredited Later Life Advisers who can advise on:

• Equity release • Long term and respite care options • Annuities • Investments and savings • Tax planning (IHT) Their web site is: http://www.societyoflaterlifeadvisers.co.uk In this geographic area I am currently the only adviser that has satisfied the rigorous criteria. SOLLA is also committed to providing useful information to recipients of care and their families at a time when plans may not have been fully thought through. In my experience the onset of care often follows

an event such as a fall or rapid deterioration in an individual’s mobility or mental capacity. Those left with the responsibility may have little idea where to start – so knowing how to contact a professional such as myself can make matters easier. Making financial decisions on behalf of someone else can be an onerous task – you must provide evidence that professional advice has been sought, my written report can facilitate this aspect. If you or someone you know needs guidance – give me a call on the following contact details to set up a free initial fact finding meeting.
