J

anuary can only mean one thing - no I’m not talking New Year’s resolutions, because I for one haven’t thought of one yet, and no i am not talking about the sales or winter blues, I am of course talking about the Straw Bear Festival! It only feels like five minutes ago that we were putting together last year’s gallery, but already it is time for another great weekend of enjoyment. In this issue you will find our brief guide to this year’s festival, including times of where you will find the bear. Just turn to the centre pages. This issue is also packed full of more local stories, including an update from Sainsbury’s regarding the continued supermarket debate, and a great feature on Alderman Jacobs School. We also have a special article regarding the Patient Participation Group, and how you can get involved. Entrance for the Whittlesey Citizen and Young Citizen of 2013 has now opened. If you know of somebody who is inspiring, please do nominate them. Turn to page 8 to find out how to. Finally, I hope you all survived what seemed to be yet another month of rain - I for one was glad when our traffic out of Whittlesey eased a little with the reopening of the wash road. And it brings me to wonder what I’ll be saying about the weather next month - will it have snowed, or will we witness yet another wet and cold month? Until then, I hope you all have a lovely January, and I hope to see lots of you at the Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival.

Wet, wet, wet

Last month certainly started off as a very wet one. Reader Roger Neal very kindly sent in the above picture, taken on a Sunday morning at the Ball Bridge and showing the surrounding fields. Will we have scenes of snow next month...? Please note the date of the fashion show is Wednesday 9th of January, and not the 7th of Jan as was incorrectly printed in the December issue.

WHITTLESEY St John Ambulance are now in the position to purchase and update more life-saving equipment after receiving a cheque for £452 from Whittlesey Manor Bowls Club. The voluntary service have received almost £1,400 from the bowls club over the past three years following charity bowls tournaments held in memory of former stalwart member Peter Bavister. The latest cheque was handed over by Peter's widow Margaret to the local superintendent, Pauline Richards, and the money will be used to replace training mats. Whittlesey Manor Bowls Club secretary Melvyn Beck said: “Having been part of the local community for fifty years, the club have been delighted to provide much-needed funds to enable the local St John Ambulance to purchase and update life-saving equipment that will be of special benefit to local people.” Whittlesey St John Ambulance superintendent Pauline Richards added: “ We are extremely grateful to be the chosen charity for the third year and sincerely thank the kind generosity of all involved at the bowls club for there much valued support.”

Sainsbury’s

keeps up the fight As part of its ongoing fight to secure planning permission in Whittlesey, Sainsbury’s has written to Fenland Council contesting the conclusions of a planning officers report which again suggests that an application by Harrier Developments for a Tesco store on Eastrea Road should be approved instead of the Sainsbury’s. Sainsbury’s firmly believes that Fenland should stick by its original decision, respect public opinion and issue a planning permission for a Sainsbury’s store. However, Fenland is currently intending to re-run the whole planning committee process in January. The officers’ report for that committee has been published and suggests that Tesco should be permitted. In response to this, Sainsbury’s has written to the council making it clear that: • The Sainsbury’s proposal is the most acceptable and sustainable location for a new foodstore in Whittlesey and is better connected to the town centre than the Harrier proposal. • Officers have chosen to ignore the results of the report on the viability of the Station Road site. The report confirmed that the Station Road site would not be viable for a major foodstore were a competing store to be developed at Eastrea Road. • The benefits which would be brought to Whittlesey by the creation of a country park have simply not been considered by officers.

Robert Oxley, Sainsbury’s Development Executive said: Fenland has still not provided us with any justification as to why our planning application should be reconsidered. The Planning Committee resolved to grant our permission after many hours of careful debate and with significant community support. That decision was reached perfectly sensibly and, consequently, the permission should be issued. But if the Council does take both applications back to committee, it should not do so on the basis of such a flawed officers’ report. The planning arguments used are unsound and it completely ignores the fact that the residents of Whittlesey have made it clear they want to see a new Sainsbury’s store, with the country park and associated business area. I would urge all Whittlesey residents who support a Sainsbury’s store to write to Fenland District Council to complain about their actions.

Whittlesey Library The Friends of Whittlesey Library have recently held a photographic competition to provide photographs of the local area which will be mounted onto the shelf ends in the Library. All three winners, Steve Burt “Traveller ponies”, Mr P Oldfield “Kingsdyke Brickworks” and Mr A Moisey “Footbridge to the Bower”, are local and their photographs are on display in the library. Mr Mosiey’s entry was the staffs choice winner. Highly recommended were T Aspittle “Kingsdyke Brickworks” and Steve Burt “View across to North Bank”. The Friends hope to use these for a fundraising jigsaw puzzle. The Friends are also involved with an Arts Council consortium Initiative “Arts Alive in Libraries”, where they have selected three creative events which will be held in the library between January and March 2013 in conjunction with Popcorn TV Community, TV with 20twentyproductions. A community TV project with bi-weekly studio nights will start at Whittlesey Library on 15th January 3-7pm. Your stories are needed: general news, local events, and sports. Although open to all, if you are a young person we would particularly like your input. Recordings will be broadcasted on www.shapeyourplace.org. We would also like to introduce Writing and Storytelling Workshops with Andy Hawkins, with storytelling and story writing to be offered as an intergenerational event. There will be two workshops, and a third session will be a rehearsal and performance. Workshops will be in the library on 19th Jan 2013, 25th Jan 2013 and 2nd Feb 2013. Ages 7-12 10-11pm, 13-19 1-3pm and 20+ 3-5pm. There will space for 15 people per session so please ask at the library if you are interested in attending. All groups will come together for the final session on 2nd February 2013 to rehearse, followed by a public afternoon performance in the library. It is hoped a legacy will be left of the groups continuing as a writing creative opportunity in Whittlesey Library. “The Long Life and Good Fortune of John Clare” with Eastern Angles Theatre This evening production is being hosted by the Friends and will take place on 12th March 2013. Tickets will cost £3.00 and will be available from the library. Monies raised will go towards the Friends funds. The play is not suitable for young children. January 2013 | Discovering

Andrew thrilled audiences at the Royal Albert Hall Park Lane Primary School pupil Andrew Hearn, delighted audiences at the Royal Albert Hall when he performed the story of James Bond in ‘Licence to Thrill’ with other children from TheatreTrain. Last year, along with a live 22 piece orchestra, 600 strong choir and 600 enthusiastic performers, pupils of TheatreTrain went from robots to mad scientists to tell the story of James Bond against his arch nemesis Sebastian Strake. TheatreTrain is no stranger to large scale performances. Founded in 1992, the group has two aims; to provide high quality training for young people in the performing arts and to offer first-class opportunities to perform in local and national theatres. Andrew has been attending TheatreTrain every Saturday morning at 9:30am since May 2012 at Thomas Deacon Academy. Here he learns to dance, sing and act, and it’s the highlight of his week. Since joining, Andrew practised and performed with other talented children at the Royal Albert Hall, and was very impressed with the orchestra. His proud mum added: “The show was amazing and the children were absolutely fantastic and the standing ovation they received was more than deserved.” Andrew is now looking forward to the next big show which will be at the O2 arena in July.

A Kay word from Mayor Happy New Year Everyone; 2013 has arrived......what a busy time of year: By now you know that I’m asked to produce my copy for the magazine by the middle of the previous month so I am once again trying to catch up with events that have happened and tell you about some that have not. First of all I’m hoping that you all had a good Christmas and that the New Year will be good for everyone. Should I shouldn’t I is the question – that is, mention the rain and the flooding. It cannot be ignored and I am hoping that we do not get any more rain, but of course the majority of the water has come from downstream, Northampton, where developers have been allowed to build on floodplains. The land is saturated and to the north of the Town the washes are flooded and the B1040 has been closed now for two weeks and will continue to be for at least another week. When this road re-opens there will be some considerable work to do before it can be used again; the debris needs to be cleared and the road repaired. Whilst appreciating the inconvenience this causes, it is so irresponsible to try and drive through the water. Heavier barriers have been erected across the width of the B1040 to prevent drivers from driving round or moving them. Hopefully by the time you read this the water will have gone and the road will have re-opened. I was kept very busy at the end of November with meetings associated with License applications in Fenland and also the launch of the Fenland Business Against Crime (FENBAC) and Thumbs Up Award scheme workshops. Each of the four Market towns in Fenland hosted a whole day of workshops for business people and licensees. Fenland Business Against Crime (Fenbac) involves businesses working in partnership to reduce crime and disorder. The Thumbs Up award, supported by the Fenland Community Safety Partnership is aimed at promoting responsible management of alcohol licensed premises. Look out for the new Thumbs Up logo which will be displayed at premises rewarding licensees for good management and for providing a safe and enjoyable environment for customers in Fenland. At the end of November I was also able to join in with the Thanksgiving Service at the Chapel on the Base at Alconbury which was followed by a Pie Social. Fillings of every description – Blueberry, Cherry, and Peach but of course Pumpkin Pie is the traditional pie to have at Thanksgiving. Yes, I have put on weight and the diet starts tomorrow!! I was invited to attend Park Lane School on

Friday 30 November to listen to the children of Year 6 (ably assisted by Mrs Bradshaw) in a celebration of African and Brazilian Drumming. I’m sure they could have been heard elsewhere in Town; it was absolutely fantastic and their parents and friends who also attended should be very proud of the young people that not only took part but also introduced each session. At the end I was given the opportunity to try out not just the drums, but also the bells and tambourines. A huge Thank You to you all, I really enjoyed it. I am due to attend Park Lane’s Christingle Service at St Mary’s on 13 December and the Reception class Nativity Play on Friday 14th.(Hankie at the ready); Thank you Park Lane for making me so welcome to all of these events. The Christmas Extravaganza took place on Friday 14th on the Market Square and the Christmas Tree Festival in St Mary’s also began on that date. Everyone puts in such a lot of effort to ensure the Town is decorated for Christmas and these events are organised with precision – all by Volunteers. Thank you to everyone that was involved in any way, shape or form. Whittlesey is appreciative of you all. The Town Council is currently involved with various projects which I will hopefully be able to let you know more about soon. In the meantime 2013 looks as if it’s going to be another busy year – at least ‘til May when my period as Mayor ends. I am looking forward to having a break during January before the season of Civic Dinners and Balls start in February. Our own Charity Civic Dinner/Dance will be taking place on Friday 5 April, further information will be available soon but if you want to reserve your place now please contact the Town Clerk at Grosvenor House, telephone 01733 351296.

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA

Another very successful year for Whittlesea Street Pride

O

ur small group of volunteers have had again another fantastic year in our quest to enhance our town and villages. It being Jubilee year, we built a second ‘Plough Garden’ on Plough Road, which we called the ‘Jubilee Garden’. Our sponsor was Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Turf, a local Whittlesey business. St Johns Ambulance continues to help maintain the site. Thirty-six other events throughout the year are well documented and publicised - including the amount of litter and rubbish our band of volunteers have removed. Our latest project to enhance and replace the window boxes on the Nags Head, Eastrea has again been a very successful project. With landlord Bob Walden and the owners giving the exterior a good paint and clean, the Pub looks very welcoming to all, with great food and drink. Eastrea still has a community hub. Other recent accolades were Street Pride winning a second prize in the Cambridge Community Volunteer Services photographic completion held at their AGM. Street Prider Sandra Small also won a community completion at the Regional Co-Operative Society, with Street Pride being the theme. More to come next month. Thank you again to ALL our volunteers’ , sponsors and friends of Whittlesea Street Pride – YOU have made some fantastic differences to our town and villages. Please remember to recycle all your bottles; these can be placed in your blue bin. The idea of offering a refund on glass bottles can be traced back to 1905 in the UK. Before then manufacturers relied on customers voluntarily to return bottles. The regime died out in the 1980’s following the introduction of cans and cheap plastic bottles. The UK is one of the only countries in Europe/USA not to offer a deposit scheme on cans and bottles. If you can help in any way, please contact me,

and I’ll send you information on this and any of our other events. Roy Gerstner. Chair Whittlesey StreetPride Group. t: 01733 208590 e: roy.gerstner@ntlworld.com

NEW QUEEN STREET PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP

What is the purpose of the patient group?

The group is part of the governments’ health bill to change the way the NHS works. Our prime role is to facilitate change. This includes contributing to the continuing improvement of services that are available both at the practice and locally. Foster an environment where communications are improved between the patients and the practice. Enable patients to take more responsibility for their own health. To provide the practice with practical support enabling them to implement change. For you as patient to determine the patients participation groups’ activities, according to the needs of you (patients), and the practice. To share information, and improve understanding between patients and the practice.

What the group is not: Is a forum for complaints or run by the practice.

Having stated that we have been in existence for over two years and over the last year we have concentrated on providing an understanding of the support organisations within the town and surrounding area. Organisations which have provided presentations are Whittlesey First Responders, SSAFA and Help at Home. It was decided that the organisation would not concentrate on fund raising although the organisation would accept donations which would be used to purchase items which would provide a value added outcome

for the practice. So what has been achieved in the last year? Through the questionnaire that was completed by you the patients in 2011 it was identified that contact with the surgery was your highest concern. To help to rectify this, the practice has closely looked at the performance of their telephone system and is at present in the final stages of tendering for a replacement system which should address the short comings of the present system. The practice is in the initial stages of tendering for the replacement of their computer system, and as you should be aware by now the practice has implemented a system enabling you as patients to book a doctors’ appointment on line. So what for the future: As we move ever closer to the implementation of the health bill changes the group will have to take a more active role in influencing the services provided with your guidance. To promote fund raising to enable the group to provide the practice with equipment which will add to the services provided to the benefit of patients. Should you wish to contact the PPG you can leave a message at the practice for our attention or contact the group by e-mailing to patientpg@gmail. com. You can also view activities on the practice web page. Next meeting is 14th January at 19:00 at the surgery, come along and have your voice heard.

A big thank you..

The weather on the day of the Ferridge family Christmas Lights Switch On in Arnold’s Lane Whittlesey was wet and miserable but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the hundreds who turned up to see the lights be switched on by Gina Ferridge’s mum Phyllis Oakley who was celebrating her 93rd birthday. Prior to the switch on the Alderman Jacobs School Choir, conducted by Mrs Sarah Combes, sang carols and songs which added to the occasion after which the Key Theatre Pantomime Mother Goose presented the children with cookies baked by Kerry Roberts. So many thanks to Kerry Roberts, Lewis Hall from the Key Theatre for his continued support and also Georgie Sansby from The Norwich John and Gina were announced as the and Peterborough Building Society who kindly supplied the sweets we winners of the Best Decorated House hand out to visitors and also Katie Carson from our charity who came to Competition. Pictured: John receiving support us. the award from Shirley Wright The biggest THANK YOU however goes to the wonderful people of Whittlesey who helped us raise over £800 on the night for our charity ‘Children with Cancer UK’. Thank You, Gina & John Ferridge. Oh and don’t worry if you missed the lights, they will be switched on again on Saturday 12th January 2013 for the Straw Bear Festival. January 2013 | Discovering

Local History

N CHARLES RONALD JACOBS by Geoff Oldfield Having written last month about a local celebrity of the round ball, I am now turning my attention to an exponent of the oval ball used in Rugby Union. Ron Jacobs had a rather illustrious father, Charles Archibald Jacobs, who was an arable farmer and dairyman who lived at 24 Station Road Whittlesey. He was a local Councillor and Alderman and the school in Drybread Road, Whittlesey bears his name. the memorial Gates to the Manor Leisure adjacent to his home in Station Road were erected in his memory. His son Ron was born on 28th October 1928 and attended Oakham School where he captained the first XV rugby team before going on to Nottingham University to study agriculture, where again sport came to the fore, he represented the University’s Athletic Union. He worked on the family farm at Thorney and could be seen delivering milk around the village, dispensing it from a churn using a one pint or two pint ‘dipper’ to fill his customers milk jugs. Being only 5’9’’ tall but weighing a hefty 16 stone he was described as ‘being square rigged and as broad as he is long’. His strength, nurtured by work on the farm, meant he was eminently suitable for his chosen sport. After initially playing for Peterborough Rugby Club, he joined Northampton Rugby Club in 1949 representing them 470 times over a seventeen year period and was captain for five of those years. When he broke his leg he regained his fitness by running over ploughed fields on the farm! He was nicknamed ‘The Badger’, because of his formidable scrummaging technique playing in the position of Prop. He was capped for England 29 times between 1956 and 1964 and captained them in the last two years. He was a member of the first England team to win the Grand Slam after the Second

World War, beating Wales, Ireland, France and Scotland. After retiring from Playing, Ron was elected Rugby Football Union council member for the East Midlands in 1969 and became it’s President in 1983/84. His term of office coincided with the controversial tour of South Africa by England. He was among leading figures at Twickenham in favour of the tour arguing that ‘contact is more profitable and constructive than leaving South Africa out in the cold’. He went to South Africa as the R.F.U.’s senior figure being on hand to answer any difficult questions. There were no diplomatic incidents on the tour in which England were defeated in the two internationals played, which proved to be the last between the two countries for eight years. He was President of the Thorney Rugby Club whose sports field bears his name. He married Gaynor Moore in 1956 and they had a son and daughter. Ron died on 10th November 2002 aged 74, his wife having predeceased him.

A word from Revd Nigel and Revd Gill “All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.” Gospel of St. John chapter 17: verses 10 to 11.

T

his prayer of Jesus is a conversation with His Father. Jesus asks that all his followers might be one, one in faith in the Son of God. He expects his disciples to be united with each other. By the Sacrament of baptism we all share in our membership of the Church that is Christ’s Body on earth. When a child or adult is baptised in one of our parish churches they receive a certificate. On the back of this document is a list of all the Christian denominations who recognise each other’s rites of baptism: Roman Catholic, Methodist, Church of England and others. What this says is quite profound. Instead of looking upon each other as we may have done in the past, as the opposition or even as nonChristians, we are to look upon each other as brothers and sisters in Christ, members of one church. January is the month in which we are

particularly asked to think and pray about Christian unity. We are invited to attend the Methodist Covenant service on January 13th at 10.30am as a way to renew our commitment to Jesus at the start of the New Year and strengthen our bonds of friendship with the Queen Street congregation. The week of Prayer for Christian Unity, January 18th to the 25th, provides us with the opportunity to pray for each other and for the unity for which Christ himself prayed. We know during this week that when we pray we are spiritually united with like-minded people around the world. Our joint service will take place at St. Jude’s Church on the 20th at 6.00 p.m. If you share our faith in Jesus please find time to pray his words at the top of this article. One day we will get beyond the conceit, ignorance and prejudice that keeps peoples apart and Jesus’ prayer will be fulfilled. God bless you all in the year to come.

It’s often said that only the brave anglers go fishing these days through the winter months, yet those that pack away their tackle until the warmer weather arrives can, and often do miss out on some excellent fishing. The fen drains around Whittlesey have seen something of a revival over the past few years particularly for those anglers looking for some winter roach fishing. The Twenty Foot drain can at times fish well down at Beggars Bridge along with Cock Bank and Glassmoor Bank, but take a top tip from some of the best local anglers around and head for the Whittlesey Dyke. It runs from Peterborough, through Kings Dyke and then

right around the back of Whittlesey with easy access at Ashline Sluice both upstream and down stream of the venue. Early and mid December saw some cracking weights taken and experts are all agreed from now until the end of the season can be just as good. With good flow and colour you can expect to catch on pinkie over groundbait. During a cold snap when the venue is running clear then a switch to bread punch fishing should get you plenty of bites. Stillwaters are often neglected from January through to early spring but here too fish can be taken. Red maggot always seems to work well when the going gets tough and make sure you have a tin of sweetcorn in your bait bag, its one of the best all round baits there is to tempt a carp or two. If bites are hard to come by, try using small hooks and light lines before you give up completely, it often pays to switch to a lighter approach even for the bigger fish. January 2013 | Discovering

Whittlesey Christian Church Make It Your New Year’s Resolution To Discover What The Christian Faith Is All About?

After all it’s been with us for 2000 years, by anyone’s standards it has passed the longevity test. To get 2013 off to a flying start we plan to host the well-known Alpha Course. This is an ideal opportunity for everyone to explore the basics of the Christian Faith in a relaxed environment where they can feel free to ask questions. You have nothing to lose by doing this, at the end of it at least you will have settled the question as to whether God is real, and if so does He have a part to play in your life. Because we are very close to starting Phase 1 of our £180 – £200,00:00 planned remodeling work on our current building it is impossible to establish an exact start date for the Alpha Course this side of Christmas, but we are hoping it can begin around late February. We would love to keep you informed. Please send us your email details so that I can notify you once the start date has been agreed. At no time will they be passed to a 2nd party. I was once asked ‘why should I believe in a God who I cannot see?’ In answering this I pointed out that every day we actually believe in things we cannot see, but we don’t stop believing in them, so why do this with God? We can’t see oxygen but we breathe it in, we can’t see the suns UV rays but we protect our skin from its harmful effects. Our eyes cannot see the germs spread by sneezing, but because those knowledgeable in these issues

have told us about them we believe they are there and would not touch something which had been sneezed over. Surely it makes sense to at least seek to properly explore the Christian Faith before forming a settled opinion. During the Blitz while bombs fell all around them, a father took his small son by the hand as he ran from a building. Seeking shelter as soon as possible, the father jumped into a crater made by a previous bomb, held up his arms and shouted for his son to follow. Terrified, the boy replied, “I can’t see you!” Looking up at his son silhouetted against the sky tinted red by the burning buildings, he simply gave this reassuring reply, “But I can see you. Jump!” The boy jumped into the safe arms of his father because he knew he could trust him.

A word from Cllr Martin Curtis

Last month at Cambridgeshire County Council’s Cabinet meeting we agreed a document called the Whittlesey Market Town Transport Strategy. (I am sure that will be met with a cry of “Just what we need, another strategy!”). It is one of the most important documents we have created for many years, it is a piece of excellent work by Town, District and County Councillors from Whittlesey alongside the officers of the various Councils that provides a joint view of how we move all aspects of transport in Whittlesey forwards. It is not a massive document and I would encourage people to take a read (I will provide a link to it on my blog). The document covers a huge range of areas, including improving rail traffic, improving the Station itself and the need for better bus services as well as discussing some ideas for the market square in Whittlesey. It also provides costings for many of our ambitions, including an estimated cost of £10m for the bridge over Kings Dyke Crossing (and I know the closure of the Wash Road recently has put this at the top of many people’s agenda) it also identifies the need for a study to develop some properly laid out

plans for how Kings Dyke might happen; we are already moving forwards with funding that study. The one thing that will disappoint some people is the comment in the strategy about an A605 bypass for our Town. It basically says that the case for a bypass does not stack up from a Whittlesey perspective. However, I have always believed that a bypass was not just a Whittlesey issue, but that it would only be delivered by making a case based on the economic benefits that would be delivered for the whole of Fenland through improved access to the A1. That work continues, and I have made a pledge to Whittlesey people that I will never stop campaigning for both the A605 bypass and Kings Dyke crossing. I can be contacted in the following ways to discuss this or any other issue: 07887 808442, mjc@martincurtis.net, www.martincurtis.net, Twitter: @cllrmcurtis, Facebook: www.facebook.com/whittleseynorth

t this time of year birds and other wildlife really struggle to find food, so keep putting out food for them on a regular basis. Remember to put out fresh water for birds every day in frosty weather. Now that your Christmas tree is finished with you could convert it into mulch for your garden. If you’ve got a shredder, a tree will create a valuable free source of mulch and wood chips. Your shredded tree can be used around plants or can be put into your compost bin. A mulch spread two inches thick around a border helps to put nutrients back into the soil. If we have snow it’s worth popping out every now and then to brush the snowfall off the branches of trees and shrubs that are suffering with it’s weight. Heavy snow will bend and break branches ruining the shape you have spent all spring and summer perfecting. If you have container plants, move them indoors or protect them with bubble wrap. Clear snow from low growing flowers such as crocus, so you can enjoy them from indoors. Once the ground has thawed roses, trees and hedges can be planted, but remember to protect them from cold wind and frosts if they are in an exposed part of the garden. Pregnancy posture

By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Varsani (Registered Osteopaths) Pregnancy is a stressful time for the mother not only because of the changes happening within her body but also how these affect her posture. This month we will explore this concept. There are 3 key factors that influence posture during pregnancy. These are: 1) production of the hormone relaxin, 2) total weight gain, averaging between 8-14kg and 3) size & shape of the baby These variables alter with each passing week and so will the mother’s posture. Broadly speaking we can expect 3 postural types during each trimester.

1st Trimester

During the initial stages, the enlargement of the uterus pushes the abdominal organs upwards and outwards. This outward motion push against the abdominal muscles causing them to contract. As these muscles are connected to the pelvis it tilts backwards and consequently straightens the curve in the lower back. At the same time the breasts are enlarging and this added weight pulls the upper body downwards, increasing the mid-back curve. See diagram.

2nd Trimester

As the baby and breasts grow in size and weight, the 1st trimester posture is exaggerated. This leads to a greater curve in the neck as it attempt to keep the eyes level. The production of relaxin [at the start of the 2nd trimester] means the joints are more stretchy thus enhancing the postural changes. See diagram.

3rd Trimester

During the final trimester, the forward pull of the baby is greater than the abdominal muscles ability to counter act it. Thus, the pelvis actually tilts the opposite way causing the lumbar spine curve to increase. See diagram. These postures put strains on the body which can result in a variety of complaints we see, such as low back pain, trapped nerves, stiff neck and shoulder problems. Through stretching the joints & muscles we can help expectant mothers adapt to her temporary posture.

Legal Corner

Your questions answered!

Your Questions Answered - for FREE! If you have a legal question that you would like answered please write to us or email legal.corner@bowsers.co.uk. If you would like your query to remain anonymous, please expressly state this in your correspondence to us.

Q

: There is a history of ‘early-onset Alzheimer’s disease’ in my family. I am a 62 year old widow and concerned about how I would cope if I too were to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Can I legally appoint someone to manage my affairs in such circumstances? Mrs P, Whittlesey

A: It is possible to make a ‘Lasting Power

of Attorney’ (LPA) with regards to either your ‘health and welfare’ or your ‘property and financial affairs’, or both. Essentially a LPA allows you to choose one or more people to make decisions about certain facets of your life. This can range from your daily routine, paying bills or collecting benefits to medical treatment and selling your home. Your attorney can be a relative, friend or professional person (such as a solicitor) over the age of 18 so long as they have not been declared bankrupt (if you want them to manage your finances). In order for a LPA to be used it must have been registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. This often takes in the region of three months and therefore a LPA is not something that should be left until the last minute. Consequently, some people choose to register a LPA, tuck it away and hopefully never use it. In doing so they are provided with peace of mind, knowing

that people they trust have the legal authority to manage their affairs should the need arise. Our legal experts would be more than happy to explain this concept to you in greater detail and help you to make a LPA if you decide it is right for you.

Q

: My friend and I are both self-employed sole traders and are planning to set up a business together in the New Year. However, we are unsure whether it would be best to operate as a limited company. What are the benefits of doing this? Mr C, Fenland

A

: The main benefit of incorporating a limited company is that it will be considered a separate legal entity from you and your friend who, as directors, will be considered employees of the company. This means that you will not be personally liable to the business’ creditors, unlike someone who operates as a sole trader or as part of a partnership. However, a limited company must pay corporation tax on its profits and is subject to far greater statutory regulation than sole traders. Our commercial law experts would be happy to discuss the various ways you could operate your new business and give you ongoing legal support whichever way you choose to proceed.

Alderman Jacobs Primary School Fifty-two years strong

A

lderman Jacobs Primary School has seen plenty of changes over the past fifty two years, and some of the most significant changes have happened in very recent times. In spring 2010 the school converted to Academy status. What this means in real terms to us as a school is a greater autonomy surrounding how we apportion and direct our funding in order to meet the very diverse needs of all of our pupils. We have been able to make decisions around: ensuring smaller class sizes across the school, we have employed a specialist maths teacher who teaches and supports maths in targeted year groups and individual children and we are continually upgrading our premises and

44

buildings to ensure we are “fit for purpose” and can continually deliver the high class, quality education our children have the right to. In December 2011 the longstanding Headteacher, Mrs Margaret Sargent retired and was replaced by a new Headteacher, Mrs Kay Corley. We have also welcomed a new Deputy Head teacher to our leadership team, Mrs Cathy Carlisle and the most recent change has been the introduction of a new Chair of Governors, Mr Darren Purell. Counsellor Martin Curtis continues to add his vast experience as Vice Chair of Governors. Kay Corley is not new to the role of Headteacher as she has done this job previously in Peterborough. Kay has worked within Fenland schools for most of her teaching career, in Wisbech, Chatteris, March and Farcet, so has a wealth of local knowledge. As a resident of Whittlesey for the past 20 years, she feels she is well placed to understand the needs of children and families who form the catchment of Alderman Jacobs Primary School. As a past pupil of Alderman Jacobs Primary School, Darren Purell is passionate about the school and what it means to the local community. Darren is a parent of the school and so also has a vested interest in “getting it right” for the children. “Learning to swim in the pool, playing football on the field, assemblies in the hall and so on, all left an indelible mark on me and a debt of gratitude too. It’s really great to have the chance to work with a team of Governors to help keep up some of the traditions and, most importantly, the educational standards”

Pictures by Alexa Loy www.alexa-loy.com

The school mission statement of: “WE AIM FOR THE HIGHEST STANDARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS IN ALL THAT WE DO” is at the heart of what the school strives for every day, twinned with the “Outstanding” judgement received at the last Ofsted inspection 2009. This focus on excellence drives the school forwards in trying to be even better than we already are and encourage the children to have high aspirations for themselves. This focus applies to the Governing Body too, who help and guide the school in achieving the aims it sets out for itself. In the pursuit of a Governing Body to match the outstanding nature of the school, we recently completed a skills audit to identify where everyone’s talents and expertise lay, and were pleased to see that we were a very knowledgeable lot! However as with most things, there is always room for improvement…. So with this in mind we would like to reach out to the local community and business community of Whittlesey and extend an invitation to come and find out more about becoming a Community Governor at Alderman Jacobs Primary School (Academy Trust). We are looking for like-minded people who would be able to give up a few evenings a year to become a Governor at our school, and really help to make a difference to the local children and families of Whittlesey. We particularly would like to hear from you if you have experience or expertise in financial/

legal aspects of business or procurement processes, or community based experience and knowledge. We really hope that someone out there would like to become a member of our school community and help us to continue with our journey towards excellence for the children of Whittlesey.

If you are interested in becoming a Governor or supporting the school as a volunteer, please contact the office on: office@ aldermanjacobs.cambs.sch.uk, or telephone: 01733 202403, to make an appointment to meet Kay and discuss your interest further. January 2013 | Discovering

Annuity Rate

f you are convinced that an annuity is the best choice – it is probable that you will want to test the Open Market Option. In other words shop across the whole range of annuity providers in search of the best rate. Use an Independent Adviser and make sure the following points are covered off:

• Is there a guaranteed annuity rate with the original plan, and under what conditions can they be exercised? • Tax Free Cash – some plans can provide a sum greater than 25% of the fund value – does this apply? • Are there any bonuses to be added now or in the future? • What penalties, if any, apply at the current time? • Is there any life cover that is included with the plan? Sometimes special guaranteed rates are available but the conditions under which they

ellyvision (KCS) Limited was set up in 1983 in Whittlesey and initially specialised in selling audio visual products. But over the years the company, which is run by Managing Director Kelley Shipp with Lee Cochrane and Tina Cawood, has expanded into white goods. Now the firm offers a complete package of home entertainment and domestic appliance goods. They are an Authorised Specialist Dealer of Sony and stockists of Toshiba, Sharp and other well known brands as well as the new Linsar brand in the Home Entertainment sector. On the domestic side the company holds Hotpoint, Indesit, Bosch, Miele, Haier and Hoover in stock, both freestanding and builtin. Kellyvision can also provide certified gas appliance removal and connection together with free site surveys for aerial installations and, as an Authorised Sky Agent, they can meet all your satellite requirements too. Kellyvision prides itself on offering competitive prices and an after sales service second to none. Many items are held in stock for prompt delivery and as members of one of the largest buying groups in the UK, Kellyvision can also provide a much wider range of makes and models if required. Sales staff receive regular product training so they can provide customers with informed choices, which are backed up by an in-house team of service engineers and delivery staff. The company is proud to be a member of RETRA (Radio Electrical and Television Retailers Association). RETRA retailers pride themselves on providing excellent customer service. Kellyvision’s dedication to meeting that excellence has earned the firm the title of Best Small Independent Retailer – Consumer
