or those of you who know me, will know that April is the month I will be meeting my baby for the first time. My official due date (and I am hoping he will be as punctual as me), is the middle of April, so if I could ask you all to email information you would like including in the May issue, as early as possible in April, then that would be a great help. Although taking a rest from my full-time job, I will be continuing to edit Discovering Whittlesea, so there is no escaping me - just be a little patient if I’m a little slower than usual in getting back to your emails. For those of you who entered the photographic competition and Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year award, the winners have been announced in Kay Mayor’s article on page 13, plus details on how you can view the winning photographs. As the presentation of the Citizen of the Year award isn’t until this month, you will have to wait until the following issue to hear more on this. More to come next month on the Duck Race which is being held at the very begining of April. This month we have another packed issue - including a follow up article on the King’s Dyke Bridge (see page 7). Thank you to everyone who contacted me following on from last month’s piece - I’m sorry that I couldn’t include all of your views, but I passed them all to Martin Curtis, who I know takes your opinions very seriously. The Traffic Debate

Last month you will recall we discussed a petition set up to create a bridge over the Kings Dyke Crossing. Below are some of the responses we received and Cllr Martin Curtisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; reply. We are a family of four with two cars the recent closure of the north bank road has added an unacceptable amount of time to our work relayed trips to Peterborough and have caused hardship due to the early start and leaving children for school . With the increasing of train traffic the bridge is a must and is fully supported by ourselves. Regards Martin and Michelle Bennett Martin Curtisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; reply: I read with great interest, in several articles, about this proposed bridge. It's all well and good to resolve the issue at Kings Dyke Crossing, but let's not forget the whole picture. Like all articles have stated, it is made worse when the Thorney road is closed, due to flooding. There are other issues that are affected when the B1040 is closed. There are people who work over towards Thorney, Eye or Crowland area. There are Children who attend our local schools from north of the river. All these people have to resort to travelling via Peterborough or Guyhurn, which incurs greater costs and travelling times. Easing the problem at Kings Dyke would only make matters worse at Horsey Toll junction and Standgound roundabout. Up to last December I had worked in the Eastfield area of Peterborough since 1973, I have seen all the hold ups and congestion via Kings Dyke, sometimes taking over one hour to get home. Surely this money would be better spent on the Thorney road to prevent the flooding, by raising the road level. I know this would cause a hold up initially and would cost a great amount, but would be worth it in the long run. I think this issue should be surveyed by the local people. David Dowsing

"The reason that Kings Dyke needs to be done is not just because of the impact on the A605 when the wash road floods, it is because there is a clear recognition that the problems are going to get worse when more housing is built in Whittlesey and the amount of rail traffic increases (estimates are that this will increase by 140% in the next 20 years). There are things we could do to enhance the wash road, however I personally would be reluctant to have this as the sole solution. Thorney residents fought for fifty years for their bypass and had daily traffic chaos before it was built. Just doing the Wash Road without sorting out Kings Dyke would see that chaos repeated every time the North Bank flooded. I would not want someone to impose that sort of misery on Whittlesey, so I believe we should be mindful of doing similar to the residents of Thorney. Whilst I would not rule out work in future to raise parts of the B1040, my priority is to ensure we get the bridge at Kings Dyke that the County Council has committed to, and I believe we will get it." The Cambridgeshire Festival of Cycling The Cambridgeshire Festival of Cycling is coming to Whittlesey Town Square on Saturday 4th May 2013 between 10.30am to 4.30pm. There will be a host of activities including: - A bike try out show with 30 different bikes to try out - A pedal powered smoothie maker to have a go on - A static bike racing competition - Cycling information, maps, freebies and an opportunity

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Coates Citizen of the Year 2013

We need your vote!

The Coates Citizen of the Year is an annual event that was launched in 2011 at the Coates Village Show. It celebrates a person, who has been voted for by fellow villagers, who has contributed significantly to the village over recent years. The Coates Village show has been running for several years and celebrates the skills and talents of the local community. The Committee felt that as well as celebrating oneoff achievements, it would be a nice idea to recognise a person who contributes to village life on a daily basis. We are now looking for your help in choosing the candidates for the Coates Citizen of the Year for 2013. We all know someone who is helpful, but can you think of someone who goes out of their way to help many villagers or the local community. Candidates can be of any age, and can be put forward for any reason that you feel is worthy. Maybe a teenager that helps other people tend their gardens, a person that runs a local

club, meeting or charity, the helpful neighbour who always has the time when you need a hand, or a villager who is well known by everyone for their kindness. If you have someone in mind, please include your name and contact details, the name of the person you wish to nominate, and a brief explanation of why. This year’s Coates Village Show will be held on 13th July, at Holy Trinity Church, Coates. Full details will be published nearer the time. NOVA club present Cheque

The Nova Club's chosen charity this year was for the two Whittlesey Patient Participation Groups (PPGs). Mandy Smith, Nova Club Treasurer presented cheques to the value of £100 to the PPGs for the Jenner Health Centre and the New Queen Street Surgery for medical equipment to be used for the benefit of patients locally. The PPGs are important for getting opinions and keeping patients advised. The monies will be used for an extra benefit for patients, such as a separate piece of equipment which would not normally be supplied by the NHS, or may be used as a contribution towards a larger item that each PPG agrees with their Doctors would be beneficial. Dr Anil Nair and Dr Daniel Andeyaba collected the cheque for the Jenner Health Centre PPG and Mrs Helena Ayre, Practice Manager, and Mr Bob Wicks, PPG Chairman, collected the cheque for the New Queen Street Practice PPG. In 2012 the Club's chosen charity was the Fenland Alzheimer's Society, plus a contribution 8

was sent to Sue Rider for Multiple Sclerosis following the death of a well loved club member. Nova is also well known for its cake stand at the Whittlesey Festival, raising £206.66 last year. The Club has 31 members at present and meets on the 1st Wednesday in the month at the Conservative Club, Whittlesey. Get involved with a local club Whittlesey Manor Bowls Club

Having celebrated their 50th anniversary last year, Whittlesey Manor Bowls Club begins a new era this season with exclusive use of the bowling green. The club owns and maintains the first-class clubhouse at their Manor Leisure Centre venue, but the green has always been available to the general public, with Fenland District Council in recent years making an annual contribution to the club towards the cost of maintaining the green. Now the club are in the process of signing a new lease agreement with the Council which means that from this season the club will be solely responsible for the annual maintenance charges in exchange for an exclusivity deal. It means, in effect, that the green will now only be available to members, although, as club secretary Melvyn Beck points out, the club wants to remain at the heart of the local sporting community, and, as a result, are throwing open their doors to the public at the end of April to promote the club as part of a recruitment drive. There’s an open day on Sunday, April 21st, a ‘Come and Try It’ week from Monday and Friday, April 22-26, with free tuition and use of equipment (see full page advertisement on page 37). “Bowls is a sport for all the family and all ages,” Mr Beck pointed out. “Apart from offering both

competitive and social play, it also provides gentle, healthy exercise and a new social outlet in the summer months. “The club’s facilities are some of the best in the area, with a members’ bar open every midweek evening throughout the season, and there’s a range of social events organised, including barbeques and quizzes. “The bowling facilities are available every day throughout the summer months, so you can play as much as you like for as little as £3 per week.”

Whittlesey Wind Ensemble was only formed last September and are already an established Community Group in the town. The group made our first public performance six weeks after they started, and then again at Christmas 2012. NEWS from New Queen Street

Surgery Patients Participation Group

he results from this years patients questionnaire are now available on the surgery’s web page for studying and analysing. As a result of last year’s patients questionnaire the telephone system was identified as being not fully fit for purpose. The requirements of the practice were fully analysed and the outcome of this analysis resulted in the existing contract for telephone provision being renewed with a breakout clause for this year (2013). This allowed time for requirements to be defined and a full tendering process to be undertaken. The contract for the new telephone system has been signed and will be in place within a month. Whilst not having such a visible impact it is the practice partners’ decision to replace the computer system and the change will become effective next month. I must thank the ladies of the NOVA group for their donation to the Patients group. The money will be used for the benefit of the patients to obtain equipment which will provide a value added service not currently available at the surgery. Details will be supplied when a purchase takes place. The patients group along with the practice have decided to hold a surgery Open Day on the 20th April 2013 between 09:00 and 12:00. This

A Kay word from Mayor What do you do when you make a decision not to mention something - especially the weather? We wouldn’t be British if we didn’t mention it would we? At the time of writing my April 2012 article in the middle of March we had had some beautiful spring weather and the Anglian Water area (that’s us) was declared an official drought area from 5 April. Bring on 2013, here we are mid-March and it is bitterly cold; the spring flowers are really not sure whether to bloom or not! I believe the saying is that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb; well let’s hope so and by the time you receive your April magazine winter will well and truly be over. Roll on summer.......... The volunteers of the Anglia (Whittlesey) in Bloom were invited to attend a meeting of the Town Council Projects Committee and it was resolved that for this year the In Bloom group would come under the umbrella of the Town Council but that a formal stand-alone group should be formed for 2014. A plan of projects for 2013 was drawn up and we are progressing with the assistance of Fenland District Council. The judging of the Citizen and Young Citizen of the year took place and the winners were announced at the Council meeting on Wednesday 13 March. The winners this year are Mr Philip and Mrs Jayne Bradshaw and Sarah Smalley of Sir Harry Smith Community College. A certificate for Outstanding Services to the Silver Lining Club of Coates has been awarded to Mrs Gaynor Hemmaway and an Outstanding Achievement Award has been awarded to Daniel Flack, also of Sir Harry Smith Community College. Philip and Jayne will be presented with the Citizen of the Year Trophy at the Mayor’s Charity Dinner Dance on Friday 5 April and Gaynor has chosen to receive her certificate at the Silver Lining Club’s meeting on Tuesday 9 April. The Young Citizen of the Year Trophy and Certificate of Achievement will be presented to Sarah and Daniel respectively on Wednesday 10 April prior to the monthly Council meeting. You are all very worthy winners – Congratulations! On Friday 8 March Chris Brudenell,

photographer of Discovering Whittlesea, Councillor Gary Swan and I judged the photographs of the Whittlesey Washes in Flood competition. What a very difficult job we had. The three winners are Mrs Denise Hall, Lesley Elding and Lauren Wells. Presentation of prizes will be made on Wednesday 10 April following the presentations to Sarah and Daniel. A public exhibition of all the photographs that were entered into the competition will be held on Thursday 11 April between 10.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m.; Friday 12 April and Saturday 13 April between 10.00 a.m. and 12 noon. Please come along to Grosvenor House and view some incredible photographic scenes of our Washes in Flood. Whittlesey has a great group of Councillors working as a team. I know that Councillor Martin Curtis has given you an indication in his article of what has been achieved for Whittlesey and also what plans are currently in the pipe-line. We really seem to be moving Whittlesey forward at the moment and I feel that we are on the edge of realising the ambitions of the residents of our Town. My term of office as your Mayor has nearly reached its conclusion and I should like to thank you all for listening to my ramblings over the past two years. I believe that Whittlesey Town Council has received more invitations than previously and I hope that I have represented the Town well in all the events that I have attended. The Annual Council Meeting will be held on Wednesday 8 May at 7 p.m. and will be followed by the normal monthly Council meeting at 7.30 p.m. when the new Mayor will be installed.

Unfortunately it is not always good news..

onth on month we have reported some fantastic news on our clearing up and gateway projects. However there is one area, no matter how frequently or the resources we put in, we can only maintain a status quo, and that area is the A605 Whittlesey to King Delph. In order to try and maintain this stretch of road we carry out on average 8 to 10 clean up events a year. The Community Pay-back team’ with their leader Kenny Carrington, are also regulars helping maintain the area. But for some reason people keep throwing all sorts of rubbish from their cars and lorries. We have removed from the Kings Delph layby, well over 5 tons of rubbish and litter and there are elements that use this layby for a toilet; I would be very wary of taking apples from the wild tree there!

There is a vast amount that comes along the river; we have a 2+ metre LitterPicker so that we can extend to the riverbank. Nevertheless, since this is one of our main gateways, we will continue to target this area and the A605 in general. We will be having a ‘Community Clean-up’ at Kings Delph, when we will hopefully be joined by another group on Saturday 20th April at 14:00, meeting in the layby. Why not come along for an hour and help us, you might just be amazed at what we find! LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Plucky pupils accept Caythorpe challenge Primary school pupils from Whittlesey took up a week-long challenge at Caythorpe Court, spending the week team building and pushing themselves beyond their comfort zone to achieve some tough physical challenges.

he plucky Year Five pupils from Park Lane Primary and Nursery School challenged themselves with a variety of activities, including the high ropes, climbing wall, vertical challenge and abseiling. Team work and trust were essential to the achievement of several activities and the children pushed themselves to their limit. The programme of activities continued into the evenings which included a game of ‘Ambush’, where the children split into two groups and played hide and seek in the dark, a camp fire and wacky races. To finish the week, everyone changed into their disco outfits and ‘strutted their stuff’ on the dance floor.

Learners’ Voice Whittlesey Needs You! The Learners’ Voice is a new project that wants to involve local residents in helping to plan and influence what kind of learning activities could be offered locally for adults, explained Roy Brown, CEO of CP Learning Trust. “We are a local charity that works across the county on a wide range of education projects. The project is being supported by Cambridgeshire County Council who will use the results when planning future learning opportunities. “The first step is to find local people who want to get involved and we are looking for volunteers who can help with collecting people’s views by using a simple survey which we have designed.” Roy explained that through the Learners’ Voice, we will be providing free training for the volunteers, so that they have the skills and confidence to undertake this activity. Another interesting part of the project involves helping to set up a “Share and Learn” scheme in Whittlesey. The idea is to find people

who want to share their skills with others. The Learners’ Voice will support the group to meet on a regular basis to decide and plan what they can share and what they want to learn. It could be anything from icing cakes, knitting to basket weaving. This is a great way to get the community working together. As with all skills ‘if you don’t use a skill you lose it’ and sometimes we just never developed the skill in the first place. So as part of the Learners’ Voice we will also offer people an opportunity to have their English and/or maths skills checked. If people then want to brush up on their spelling, punctuation or any aspect of English and/or maths we can offer support and advise on how you can do this free of charge. ell, just what was happening in 1913? Nationally George V was King, Herbert Henry Asquith was the Liberal Prime Minister and World War One was still a year away. Locally, Whittlesey was surviving quite well without being influenced by outside events. Under the Local Government Act of 1894, the town had been divided into two parishes, Urban and Rural, and the population of the two parishes now numbered 7580. Rates were levied to cover the cost of administering the Town in providing lighting, paving, cleansing. Town roads, especially Queen Street and its junction with Whitmore Street, were prone to flooding but main drainage would not be introduced until some years later. As there was no piped water, supply for the domestic use had to be drawn from wells. The Urban District Council comprised sixteen elected non-political members of which John Boyce was Chairman. The cemetery was administered by the Joint Burial Committee under the auspices of John Peed and Alfred Beeby was the lodge Keeper. The Police Station in Queen Street was staffed by an inspector, Charles Jacobs, a sergeant and seven constables. The Volunteer Fire Brigade, under Arthur Harper the blacksmith, was housed in the Town Hall, which was also the meeting place for the Town Lands, United and Sudbury Charities. The Magistrates Court also meet there. The Keeper of the building was James Oldfield and his wife. The Whittlesey Union (workhouse) situated in Eastrea Road was formed from the two parishes and administered by a Board of Guardians under the Chairmanship of Harry Cole. The religious needs of the population were served by four Church of England churches and a mission house at Angle Bridge; three Methodist Chapels; two Baptist Churches and one Congregational Chapel. Education of boys and girls was well catered for with the Broad Street School having 129 infants and 225 juniors, the head teacher was J.P.McCarthy. Senior boys, numbering 180, were educated at the Station Road School where Oswald Neale exercised his authority. A similar number of girls were accommodated in the West End School under headmistress, Sarah Weston. There were also schools at North Side for 85 children under Florence Betton and a similar number could be taught at Angle Bridge Mission School where William Allott was master. All these schools had an

adjacent house for the Head Master or Mistress. Communication with the outside world was by railway, the station master being William Herbert, or through the Post Office run by Arthur Massey. There were no bus services at this time except for a stagecoach pulled by horse which took potential passengers from The Falcon to the railway station. It has been said that we are a nation of shopkeepers and this certainly applied to Whittlesey. With no public transport, everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs had to be provided for locally. There were seven separate brickyards employing local labour, but agriculture was the main employer. They were supported by wheelwrights, saddlers, blacksmiths, ironmongers, potato merchants and a slaughter house. Our bodies were nourished by grocers, butchers, bakers, confectioners, general stores and of course, by the numerous public houses. We were clothed by dressmakers, tailors, boot and shoe makers and beautified by hairdressers. Our buildings were constructed and kept in repair by builders, plumbers, painters, stone masons, thatchers and chimney sweeps. They were kept warm by coal merchants and furnished by cabinet makers. Luxury goods could be purchased from florists a chain store, jewellers and watch makers, book sellers and music teachers were available. Should we become ill, there was always one of the four doctors available on call assisted by a chemist. All these shops and trades people were to be found in Whittlesey one hundred years ago, so it can be seen that we really were a self contained community.

A word from Revd Nigel and Revd Gill All of us look after and maintain four Parish Churches: St Mary’s Whittlesey, St Andrew’s Whittlesey, St Thomas’ Pondersbridge and Holy Trinity in Coates What is a parish church:1. A spiritual home to a congregation of faithful worshippers who are Christians and members of the Church of England. The word ‘church’ includes the building and the body of people who gather there in Christ’s name as, in the Bible, meaning a gathering or assembly of the faithful. 2. A place of worship where people gather in God’s presence to celebrate and give thanks for events in their lives i.e. baptisms (also known as christenings), marriages and funerals. 3. A place for prayer and reflection by groups and individuals. It is our intention and commitment to have our churches open outside service times. 4. The centre of a geographical area called a Parish. The whole of England is divided into parishes and the Church of England provides clergy and ministers to serve all who live in them. All priests and ministers are called by God and trained by the Church. 5. In our case an historical building between 180

and 760 years old made holy by those who gather and worship there in God’s presence. Each building has its own history together with the shared personal histories of those who have, over the centuries, entered for whatever reason. 6. A place of education. Each year pupils from our schools visit to learn and understand what happens in the church at services. They also study the histories of the buildings. Likewise, other groups visit for these purposes. As members of the Christian faith we pray the liturgy and listen to sermons in order to deepen our faith. Please share with us what your parish church means to you. Could you imagine a future without one? You provide the support needed to keep our parish churches. Please remember that we receive no income from the State. What monies we need have to be raised locally with occasional help from some specific charities. Please keep your churches in your prayers and give thanks to God for all the support they receive.

A cold spell in the first two weeks of March looks to have put the fishing back a little as we head into spring. Thankfully several of our local still waters have still managed to maintain some good form. None better than Decoy Lakes, without doubt one of the best stillwater match venue’s in Eastern England and certainly in the top ten right around the country. The complex has 11 lakes to choose from catering for both the matchmen and pleasure anglers alike. The relatively new “strip” pools at the bottom end of the fishery have come on leaps and bounds, at weekends through the summer months they host regular club matches on them and produce consistent sport for all. The more natural pools such as Willows and Horseshoe are my two favourites on the complex while others much prefer the impressive Beastie Lake. Tactics at the fishery are varied in both baits and approach but one things for sure, get it right and you will be in for a cracking day’s action. Right now red maggot should be the best bait fished out long and also close in. As we get into the warmer months carp do come into the nearside bank very close indeed so always feed maggot or pellet right next to your nearside bank. Do not be in any hurry to fish close in though, give them time to find your bait

and settle there. Finally onto the jewel in the crown, Beastie Lake. Recognised by many anglers as one of the best but also one of the most difficult waters to fish on the complex. It’s regularly fished by some of the top commercial anglers in the country and even they still find it hard to work out at times. Meat baits work really well in the margins for the big fish, and when I say big I mean carp to double figures and going close to 20lb. Add the fighting fit barbel into the equation and you will understand why anglers on this pool fish robust tackle. Even a pellet waggler approach has been known to do very well on this impressive, but demanding lake.

Hungarian Goulash

ingredients: 600g pork cut into chunks, (if you prefer lean, go for pork tenderloin), otherwise shoulder or any leftovers from the weekend; 2 tbsp plain flour; 2 heaped tsp paprika; 1 large onion, finely sliced; 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed; 1 red pepper, seeds removed and finely chopped; 1 green pepper, seeds removed and finely chopped; 1 long red chilli, seeds removed and finely chopped; 1 tsp dried oregano; 1x 400g tin plum tomatoes; 1 tbsp red wine vinegar; 200ml chicken stock Instructions: 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180C/160C fan ovens/ Gas 4. Heat a large casserole dish over a high heat and add the oil. 2. Toss the pork in the flour, paprika, salt and some freshly ground black pepper. Once it is hot, add the pork and fry until it is browned all over. Using a slotted spoon remove from the casserole and keep to one side. 3. Reduce the temperature and stir the onions and garlic. Add a splash of water to the pan to help prevent the onions from sticking. Cook for a few minutes until the onions are softening. Add the red and green peppers, chilli, crushed caraway seeds and oregano. 4. Continue to cook for a minute or so before adding the tomatoes, red wine vinegar and stock. Return the pork to the casserole, and bring to a simmer. Cover and place in the oven for 1 ½ hours, stirring a few of times throughout. 5. By now the sauce will have thickened slightly and the pork starting to break down. Remove from the oven and plate up. Add a few spoonfuls of| yogurt at your preference. 25 April 2013 Discovering

Why do people use different criteria when judging the authenticity of the life and teachings of Jesus than when judging other historic events and figures? When some people reject the evidence of the Biblical account as being true they could be doing so from a position of ignorance, because they have never honestly researched the subject; or bigotry because they have an ulterior motive.

What I am saying is that if we can treat them as factual and reliable with only limited evidence, limited that is, when measured against the volume of evidence supporting the Biblical account of Jesus and the early church. Surely in the interest of consistency we should apply the same criteria. A word from Cllr Martin Curtis

Last month our Town received some of the best news it has had for years; that the County Council have committed to building a bridge over Kings Dyke crossing within three years. This decision has come about for a number of reasons, the first is the lobbying that my fellow Whittlesey County Councillor, Ralph Butcher and I have been doing at the County for some years, alongside a real understanding of the impact that the B1040 closure has had on Whittlesey, a concern about the future because of new houses and an increase in rail traffic and a County Council ambition to start to deliver on infrastructure problems around Cambridgeshire. I am sure that the fact that Ralph and I have always made sure that Kings Dyke has stayed on the agenda and we have used evidence based arguments were significant factors in bringing the issue to the fore. That said there is still some way to go and, not least, we need to ensure that Network Rail play their part in helping to fund the bridge; I can assure you that I have no intention of losing focus on Kings Dyke until our bridge gets built. Alongside the commitment to Kings Dyke we have a - E: enquiries@discoveringwhittlesey.co.uk few other projects that are coming together; we have the potential, for new businesses, a country park and a

new supermarket if the Sainsbury development proceeds and the £8m refurbishment of Sir Harry Smith is nearing completion. I have spent significant time dealing with both of these projects, In fact I can still remember the meetings with Conservative Shadow Ministers to try and get them to commit to continuing with the schools capital programme in Fenland when it became clear that it could be under threat. But the important point about all of these projects, alongside the plans we have to change the market square, is that we are seeing signs of a Town that is striving to move forwards and which, I hope, has the potential to become an even more special place. My aim will always be to continue to move Whittlesey forwards. Alderman Jacobs Primary School Have you ever wondered what really goes on in school? Well over 150 Mums of children at Alderman Jacobs have been invited into school, to spend time with their children, finding out exactly what does go on and answer that question. From Monday the 4th March until Friday 8th March, Mother’s of every year group have had the opportunity to spend either a morning or an afternoon in the classroom with their child. They have been able to experience, side by side with their child what it feels like to be in a Literacy or Numeracy lesson and have been encouraged to “have a go” at the work alongside their child, as you may imagine for some, things have changed dramatically since they were last in the classroom! Other Mums have joined in Music, Science, P.E. and Theme lessons, completing tasks and joining in practical activities - School has never been so busy! pril is the perfect month to prune shrubs, trees and hedges before birds begin to nest. Remove foliage from any overgrown evergreen shrubs and cut back summer flowering shrubs such as hydrangeas. Cutting off dead or damaged wood is a good way to keep your plants in shape and will encourage new growth. It’s a good idea to keep any plant labels when you buy a plant. These should give you information such as when and how to prune. Pruning at the wrong time of year won’t always hurt a plant in the long run but pruning late in the season may encourage new growth that could be killed off by winter weather and could mean fewer flowers and fruits for the following season. Start to prepare and plant hanging baskets with your favourite summer annuals. Use moss or a basket liner to line the basket then fill with compost before adding an assortment of plants and foliage. Keep indoors or in the green house until the risk of frost has gone and water daily once they have been put out.

Keep an eye out for garden pests. Aphids of all colours, such as green-fly and black-fly, will start to multiply this month as the weather begins to warm up. Check all plants regularly, especially roses, and squash any clusters of them with your fingers or spray with insecticide. Hand dig out weeds from your borders before they get out of control then you will only need to hoe occasionally throughout the season. To suppress weeds add a mulch to your borders or better still plant lots of ground cover plants such as vinca, hostas and pulmonaria. Onion and shallot sets can be planted this month. Make sure that your vegetable plot is positioned in a sunny, well-drained spot and kept as weed free as possible. Plant onion sets around 10cm apart in rows 20cm apart and plant shallots around 15cm apart in rows 22cm apart. Push them into the soil until just the tip is showing then add mulch to the soil. After planting, water the sets sparingly. You should be able to harvest as soon as the foliage starts to turn yellow.

An Unexpected Journey A younger and more reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out on an “unexpected journey” to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of Dwarves to reclaim their stolen mountain home from a dragon named Smaug. And so begins the long anticipated film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, starring familiar faces such as Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman and James Nesbitt. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever ... Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities ... A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middleearth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know. Director Peter Jackson, the man who first brought Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings to the masses, approaches the author’s children’s book The Hobbit, in a similar fashion, expanding it into three movie episodes. The film is beautifully shot in New Zealand, and Martin Freeman is the perfect man to portray Bilbo Baggins. There are explosively dramatic battles, as well as tingling moments, such as that when Bilbo meets Gollum. The Hobbit is a huge success, it offers both fun, energy and a bold sense of purpose. At 170 minutes in length, you’ll be glad to have rented this epic film rather than suffered in the uncomfortable seats of a cinema. Peter Jackson, you’ve done it again.

any of my clients want a return on their investments that puts them ahead of the rate of inflation – which is very difficult in a Cash deposit in a Bank or Building Society – because interest rates are so low. However – the same clients would not wish to invest in a fund that tracks the stock markets – that have been very volatile. Diversification is an important aspect when searching for better returns whilst aiming to avoid the risky end of investing. There are four basic asset classes: Cash, Fixed Interest, Property and Equities. Most people understand cash – the returns are not great but the degree of security makes it an important component. Fixed interest is effectively getting a return on debt – money is loaned to the government or a corporation – and in return interest is paid back – the rate of return depends on the ability of the borrower to repay the debt – most conventional pension funds have significant Fixed Interest funds. Investment in property may not be domestic

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Spectacular evening of brass band and choral music

he internationally acclaimed Grimethorpe Colliery Band is to join forces with the Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices and the Peterborough Youth Choir for a spectacular evening of voices and brass. The concert, to be on Saturday 20 April 2013 at 7.30pm at the Kingsgate Auditorium in Peterborough, is the first collaboration between the choirs, under the leadership of musical director William Prideaux, and the renowned Yorkshire brass band, which was founded in 1917 and paid for by the owners of the Grimethorpe Colliery to offer miners a hobby. The miners’ campaign to survive was immortalized in the 1995 film Brassed Off, starring Ewan McGregor and Tara Fitzgerald. Grimethorpe Colliery Band played in the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Olympic Games, and has recorded several albums and won numerous competitions. The Band gained first place with 99 out of 100 on 17th October 1992 in the National Brass Band Championship at the Royal Albert Hall. Where are the songs of Spring?

Mid-March and it’s snowing! But there’s loads to look forward to; the days are lengthening and the next two months of spring will bring all the usual pleasures and hopefully a few surprises too. The dawn chorus is currently provided by our resident birds like mistle and song thrushes but already there are sand martins, swallows and wheatears arriving in the south of the country, and they’ll be here by the time Discovering Whittlesea is with you. Around mid-March the blacktailed godwits that nest on the washes will also start arriving and for a few weeks they’ll be sharing the wash with the wintering black-tailed godwits which are feeding in preparation for the long flight back to Iceland. “Our” godwits have been wintering in West Africa, though some may not have gone further south than Portugal. Like their close relatives the lapwing and snipe, black-tailed godwits are declining, and the 40 pairs on the Whittlesey Wash now represent over 80% of the

Much of the management on the washes by the RSPB and other landowners is aimed at maintaining the open landscape of short, tussocky grass and high water table for these rare nesting birds. Hopefully, godwits and snipe will be with us for years to come but last week I was reminded how times change when I joined a farmer and some archaeologists cleaning out a ditch just a mile out of town. There were the bones of a beaver and the willow it had been gnawing. There probably haven’t been beavers here for a thousand years, and these remains were about 3000 years old though the teeth marks looked as fresh as a daisy. That reminds me of spring again, there are some really good bluebell woods not far from Whittlesey, such as Lady’s Wood Nature Reserve near Upwood, which will be looking their best in late April and well worth a visit.
