ne day after the last issue printed, Dylan Alexander Shiels was born - I can see now that he was just timing his grand entrance into this world after the magazine had been safely printed. What a clever boy! A big thank you must go to Chris Brudenell for taking the beautiful picture to my right, somehow he managed to take photographs of my little baby boy for over an hour without any crying. I would highly recommend him should you want a baby shoot (or any other for that matter). Dylan isn’t the only new addition to the Discovering Whittlesea family, this month we would also like to welcome Cllr Dave Mason, who is Whittlesey’s new Mayor. Much like Kay Mayor did before, Dave will be writing each month for the magazine, keeping us informed of council matters. There are exciting development plans currently being discussed for our railway station, and if you turn to page 7, you will see how you can get involved and have your say. It’s important that we take advantage of these opportunities, to help shape Whittlesey, and I’m sure you will agree that our railway station is overdue modernisation and improvement. We have a packed June issue full of local news and stories, including a 100th birthday for a local resident, information about the next Whittlesey in Bloom, and a charity trek to Kilimanjaro. We also have an extensive What’s On guide for June, so there’s no excuse to miss those charity events, summer fetes and music nights. Do keep sending in your suggestions, events and stories. The magazine is always very popular but where space is available, I will always try and include Cover picture by your events and ideas. Chris Brudenell Have a lovely June, and happy Father’s Day and birthday to my wonderful husband.

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Have your say on station masterplan A draft masterplan setting out a vision for the future for Whittlesea Train Station has been developed. From Monday 3 June - Friday 12 July 2013 Fenland District Council and Whittlesey Town Council are asking local residents for their views and opinions about the plan. In 2011 and 2012 local organisations and the public gave their support for improvements to Whittlesea Station through the Fenland Rail Development Strategy and Whittlesey Market Town Transport Strategy consultations. With this support the Councils have been working together with Greater Anglia the train operating company and Network Rail to set out plans for how the station might look in the future. The draft masterplan shows the proposed location of facilities that are expected to be delivered in future at the station. This includes car parking, lighting, waiting shelters, customer information points and proposals for access between the platforms. The Councils intend to amend the plan following the consultation and then adopt a final version that can then be implemented in stages in future years. Councillor Ralph Butcher, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder responsible for transport, said: “The draft masterplan is an important next step for helping to achieve the train station improvements that are needed and to deliver the Fenland Rail Development Strategy. I hope that members of the public will respond to the consultation and visit us at the consultation events so that we can gain as many views as possible.” “The final version of the plan will be implemented in future years, so it is important that people give their views now to influence the future design of In April members of Whittlesey WI had a talk by June Barton on "Pigsties, Privies and Coppers" most unusual. At the May meeting the National Resolution for 2013 was discussed when members agreed for the delegate at the National AGM to vote that members support the campaign to shop local and support our High Streets. Then a member gave a talk about growing up in
Whittlesea train station.” Councillor David Mason, the Mayor of Whittlesey, said: “Whittlesey Town Council is pleased that after several months of discussions and preparation a draft master plan has been drawn up through the Fenland Rail Development Strategy for improvements to Whittlesea Station. “The station area has been sadly neglected for some years and there is now a plan on the table which the commuters and residents of Whittlesey are being asked to comment on. Your views are necessary to enable the plan to incorporate your ideas and finally to be adopted and implemented in the future. “Please respond to the consultation either online, by visiting the one-stop shop or by attending one of the consultation events. This is your opportunity to have your voice heard on a very important plan.” A copy of the draft masterplan along with details about how to respond to the consultation will be available from Monday 3 June on Fenland District Council website at www.fenland.gov.uk/transport or from the town’s Fenland @ your service shop. There will also be an opportunity to meet with staff and councillors to discuss the draft masterplan and to see examples of how some of the proposals might look at the following events: • Tuesday 11 June 2013 – 3pm – 7pm at Whittlesey Town Council Office, Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey • Saturday 15 June 2013 – 9am – 12 noon at Whittlesey Town Council Office, Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey • Wednesday 19 June 2013 – 6.30am – 10am - Whittlesea Train Station, Station Road, Whittlesey Africa. June's meeting which is a Social evening will have the theme of At the Seaside. At July's meeting on Tuesday 2nd July Chris Clark will give a talk on " Theatrical Makeup " New members are welcome. Meetings are held at St Andrew's Church Hall at 7:30 pm. Tel Ginny on 01733 205148. June 2013 | Discovering

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Whittlesey Christmas Lights Summer Quiz Sheet The Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee are continually trying to raise funds to keep the lovely lights up to date every year. We are now in the process of updating the old bulbs, by replacing them with LED, which are much brighter and require less maintenance. To do this, obviously costs a lot of money; we are also hoping to have quite a few extra lights this year and more in colour.

Editor’s Note:
Last month we incorrectly printed the winner of the Mayor’s Duck Race in the picture caption. The correct winner was Ben Coxell, pictured above, with duck number 131. Apologies to Ben and his family and well done again for picking the winning duck.

New Road School Explore Antartica
Children at New Road School have been really enjoying learning all about Antartica. They studied the history and geography of this fascinating continent. They looked at the environment in Antartica and examined the human impact on the many varieties of animal and plant life. This involved finding out about the types of animals who live there and how they evolved and adapted to their snowy habitat. Using green-screen technology and ICT the children have re-enacted and filmed the famous race to the South Pole of Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen. They followed the journeys of the great explorers, interviewed their crews, set sail for the Antartic and travelled through the cold, icy and very harsh terrain to try and be first to reach the South Pole. The green-screen allowed them to project different settings onto the background so that the final film is an entertaining and accurate depiction of the hardships endured by the explorers. After a very enjoyable and fun time film-making
the children wrote about and discussed how Scott should be remembered today. They also talked about and studied the broader global issues that affect the area and what the future holds for Antartica. June 2013 | Discovering

ADave word from Mason A new face and a new Mayor but I hope to be able to keep all readers as well informed of events in the town as the previous Mayor and in particular those that which affect the Whittlesey Town Council. Speaking of which it is only right that I pay tribute to Mrs Kay Mayor as she steps down after a very successful two year term as Chairman of the Whittlesey Town Council and Mayor of Whittlesey. Her workload during that time has been absolutely phenomenal and her commitment to the town total. I often received e-mails from her at two minutes to midnight or in the early hours of the morning, I cannot claim to have read them at those particular times but the fact she had sent them is evidence enough of her enthusiasm and one which I will find difficult to match. To list all Kay’s achievements as Mayor would take up the remainder of this article but the one which stands out for me personally as I had the pleasure of supporting her was the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee of 2012. To spearhead and organise such a successful event for the town took a year of planning and incredible energy on Kay’s part and I am sure all who attended that June day owe her a great deal of thanks. Kay will not be going away - just the opposite! She will be pursuing her next project with vigour which is promoting Whittlesey in Bloom. She will also be a key figure in improving transport links in and around the town, especially the Whittlesey railway station, and supporting her husband Ken as he takes over as Chairman of the Fenland District Council. As many of you know Kay, along with Ken, regularly supports my wife Ann and I in staging charity quiz nights throughout the town, is a keen member of the Whittlesey Conservative Club Committee and supports me in promoting other events both in the town and throughout the county raising valuable funds for those less fortunate than ourselves. So what of me? A man recently stopped me in the street and rather bluntly informed me that I was not a Whittlesey man. Technically he was right as I have only lived in the area for 39 years and I was not born and bred in the area. However, like my predecessor, my love and enthusiasm for Whittlesey is absolute. How else would you explain my 18 years as Churchwarden of St. Andrews Church, 14 years service to the Whittlesey Charity, 25 years on various committees of Whittlesey Conservative Club where I am currently Secretary, a former President of the now disbanded Whittlesey
Chamber of Trade, a founder member of the Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee, a captain and committee member of Coates Cricket Club for 10 years before transferring to Whittlesey Cricket Club where I ultimately had the enjoyment of coaching the young players of the future. I am extremely fortunate to have an experienced and hard working team of councillors under my leadership and I would recommend any member of the public to attend our regular council meetings at Grosvenor House to witness what goes on. At present there are a few loose ends to tie up on the proposed supermarket in Eastrea Road and the provision of a flyover at Kings Dyke railway crossing is a permanent item on our agenda. Any planning application on the north side of the town adjoining the B1040 will be strongly resisted as will the further provision of wind farms. We will lobby Fenland District Council whenever possible on the construction of a southern bypass, the Cambridgeshire County Council on transport issues generally and in particular the improvement of bus services and facilities at Whittlesey railway station, the pedestrian redevelopment of the Buttercross to provide al fresco catering and the further expansion of the Straw Bear and Whittlesey Festivals. Future employment, trade and housing needs will also be constant items on our town council agenda. Finally, Whittlesey is proud to be part of Fenland and long may it remain so. It will be one of my main aims to strive for parity with the other three Fenland towns of Wisbech, March and Chatteris in receiving fair distribution of public services. Before I go, may I remind you all of the Whittlesey Cycling Day on Sunday 16 June as detailed in the last issue. The main event starts at 12noon finishing at approximately 4.45pm with lots of attractions in the town in between and I hope to see you all there. There is much to be done and I look forward to keeping you all up to date with progress in the coming months.

30,000 Kgs of Litter & Rubbish removed
T
his is the phenomenal amount removed from the roadsides, streets and laybys of Whittlesey and the surrounding villages, since we were formed 8 years ago. This achievement is somewhat of an anti-climax of our Group - we would rather find a lot less! Unfortunately all this rubbish and litter that we find has been thrown out or dumped by people – it doesn’t arrive by itself. We are approached regularly about the littering issues, but as I have stated on many occasions – we are a voluntary group. Last year we did 30 events and collected well over 5,000 Kgs. Did you notice all the daffodils coming in and out of Whittlesey this year? What nice spring colours? Maybe you could sponsor a bag later in the year and we will plant them. Our BIG thanks to Tracey & John Rowell, who organised a river clean up by the Geo-Cachers. On Saturday 21st April, they alone collected around 40 bags of rubbish, our group of around 25 did our area along the A605 and as usual collected a vast amount yet again, having only just done this stretch 3 weeks previously – someone is throwing all this garbage out!!! Prior to the Council Meeting on Wednesday 8 May the presentation of the Charity cheques from the Mayor’s Fund took place. The fund raising comprised of the collection at the Civic Service, the Duck Race on Easter Monday, and the Raffle and events at the Charity Dinner Dance held at the Manor Function Suite on 5 April. The Charities I had chosen for the year had been published throughout the year and were The Whittlesey Community Car Scheme, Commotion Youth – for young people with Special Needs and Whittlesey Action for Youth. To say the amount raised exceeded all expectations is an understatement, due to the generosity of the people of Whittlesey and beyond, we were able to also include two other organisations. Firstly The Fire Fighters Charity, previously known as the Fire Service Benevolent Fund. Our local firemen helped us with the Duck Races both last year when the funds raised went towards providing the firework display at the end of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and again this year; in fact without their assistance the races could not have taken place, so I felt some recognition should be made, so a framed certificate was presented together with the cheque to acknowledge their support. The second organisation was the 1st Whittlesey Scouts. On Sunday 28 April we saw the Fenland Scouts St Georges Day Parade here in Whittlesey when over 300 Scouts from throughout Fenland paraded through the Town before attending a Church Service and renewing their Promise. These events don’t just happen and I felt that a donation from the Mayors fund
Policing your area With the summer (hopefully) just around the corner it is a time that we all like to open our doors and windows and enjoy the weather. An open window can be tempting to a thief – even very small openings can be used to gain access. If you are going out please do not forget to close and lock windows and doors. Even if you are going out for a short time. The same applies

would assist them towards the cost of the organisation of such events. I am delighted to say that all of the organisations were very well represented at the Presentation evening. I would like to end by say a very huge thank you to everyone for their support.

to car windows – but please do not leave dogs in the car with all the windows closed. Another summer related concern is arson; we have had a number of small fires being reported already. If you see a fire please ring 999 and the operator will send the Fire Service as required and then let the Police know if we are needed.

The Reverend Henry Burgess
Local History
by Geoff Oldfield
T
he Reverend Henry Burgess must have been one of the most gifted literary academics ever to have graced St. Andrew’s vicarage. He was born in 1808 in Lambeth, Surrey and he was educated at a dissenting college in Stepney London. Here he studied Hebrew as well as the Classics. After ministering to a non conformist congregation, he was ordained Deacon in 1850. A year later he was admitted to Priest’s Orders by Dr Lee, Bishop of Manchester. He took the degree of LLD at Glasgow University in 1851. This university was established in 1451 and was the fourth largest University in the English speaking world. He took a PhD degree at Gőttingen University in Lower Saxony, Germany the following year. This University was founded in 1734 by George II King of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover. He held the perpetual curacy of Clifton Reynes in Buckinghamshire from 1854 until 1861 when he was appointed by the Lord Chancellor to the vicarage of Whittlesey St. Andrews in recognition of his services to theological learning. He was a prolific writer and his works included ‘Festal Epistles of Athanasius’ ‘Select Metrical Hymns and Homilies’, both translated from the Syraic. ‘The Repentance of Nineveh’ and The Art of Preaching and the Composition of Sermons’, and by complete contrast ‘The Amateur Gardener’s Yearbook’. He edited and revised other publications such as ‘Edward Hinks on Assyrian Verbs’, ‘John Kitto on A Cyclopedia of Biblical Literature’ and a ‘Journal of Sacred Literature’. He was a great writer of letters on various religious topics to well known people at the time and was for a numbers of years editor of the Clerical Journal. He was one of two nominations for the post of a Principal for the Faculty of Education at Mcgill University in Montreal Canada. He was not selected however, lest such an appointment would further antagonise the powerful Roman Catholic Church in Quebec!! The Rev. Burgess was vicar for twenty years when ‘his mind gave way’ and the last five years of his ministry were spent in complete seclusion and his eyesight, which had been failing for sometime, left him blind. He died on February 10th 1886 aged 78. The funeral took place in St Andre’s church five days later. The Pulpit, reading desk and lectern were draped in black and the muffled bells were chimed whist the tenor bell was tolled as the coffin entered the
church. The service was conducted by Rev W. Waller, vicar of St Mary’s church, ably assisted by the Rev. W Bluck, curate of St Andrew’s church. He was interred in the family vault at the East end of the cemetery close to that of the late Lieutenant General Sir Harry G W Smith. The service at the grave was impressively read by the Rev. W Wheeler. He was married firstly to Jane who was buried on the 6th February 1866 aged 59 years and secondly to Eliza Elizabeth from Ravenstone in Buckinghamshire by whom he had two daughters. Proudly in association with Wright's of Whittlesey

A word from Revd Nigel and Revd Gill The question asked, “Where can I get married?” The answer: Many people like to marry in their local parish church. You can also marry in a church if you are on that church’s electoral roll.
However, we know that you might like to marry in a different church because it has special significance for you through family or other special connections. An engaged couple can now do just that if either of you can show just one of the following seven connections with the parish. That one of you: • was baptised in the parish concerned or • was prepared for confirmation in the parish or • has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least 6 months or • has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or That one of your parents, at any time after you were born: • has lived in the parish for a period of at least 6
Fishing News
By Ken Wade
Picture: Twenty Foot Drain/ Glassmoor Bank Junction
Mid June will see the start of a new coarse fishing season on rivers and fen drains right across the area. June 16th is that magical day which anglers from all over the country look forward to, in fact in years gone by just about every angler I knew took a day off work to fish on opening day. That time has passed though with the onset of stillwaters, but for many cutting out a swim on the Whittlesey Twenty Foot Drain ready for a days bream fishing or raking out the weed on Cock Bank in the preparation for a spot of tench fishing is still something that has to be done. With the new season starting on a Sunday I expect to see a lot of anglers out on our local waters, hopefully the weather leading up to the big day will be kind to us and the fish will be on the feed. For the really big nets of fish, cutting out a swim, pre-baiting it and getting up at the crack of
months or • has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least 6 months or That one of your parents or grandparents: • was married in the parish In all cases involving church services - i.e. going to normal church services, baptism, confirmation or marriage - this applies only to Church of England services. Even if you cannot demonstrate any of the above connections, we want to help you explore whether it may still be possible for you to marry in your special church. It is also possible for you to be able to marry in the parish church if you are divorced. The important thing is to talk to one of us well in advance to discuss the options open to you. With God’s blessing, Revd Nigel and Revd Gill dawn should see you rewarded with a good net of fish. As I have mentioned, the Twenty Foot should fish well for bream and I would also give Glassmoor Bank a try too, particularly down at the bottom end. Cock Bank is full of tench with the best area around Burnt House Bridge. There should be plenty of small fish showing on the Whittlesey Dyke from Ashline Sluice through to Turntree Bridge, try a groundbait and pinkie approach here, or perhaps maggot and caster for a few of the resident skimmers and bream. Whittlesey AA club books will now be on sale at all the local tackle shops and do make sure you are in possession of a current Environment Agency rod licence before you set of for your opening days sport, bailiffs are bound to be out and about checking everyone along the banks of our local waters. A word from
Whittlesey Christian Church Things Can Change For The Better
In order to erect our new 2nd floor throughout the old sanctuary area specialist contractors were brought in to sink 23 Pilings 9mtrs into the ground. Once they had left, our folks looked at what can only be described as the swamp like mess they had left the building in and one of them aptly commented – ‘what a dreadful mess’ But what a difference just 2 weeks can make. Our chosen contractors for the whole project, Burmor Construction, who have proved to be absolutely incredible, moved in and began the task of making something of this mess. Then, as once more I showed our folks how things were progressing, I overheard this comment – ‘wow, what a difference 2 weeks can make’ – and it was true, in just 2 weeks the contractors had turned everything around, moved the project forward, and returned the building into some semblance of order. This got me thinking. Sometimes our lives can be thrown into total disarray, either by our wrong decisions, or simply because of things beyond our control. We could feel justified in sinking into a pit of despair, wondering whether things will ever change. But they can and will if you get the right kind of help to show you the path to follow, and the decisions necessary to be made in order to bring about change. I began recalling different ones within our congregation who joined us with their lives in varying degrees of mess. Slowly the process began of turning their lives around from feelings of hopelessness, despair, no self-esteem, low self-image, the list goes
on. In our first counselling session someone said – ‘I don’t suppose you can help someone like me’ – While not wishing to offend them, as gently as possible I said – ‘with over 40 years of dealing with people’s problems there really is nothing about your situation that wise guidance cannot help change, what cannot be changed by another’s help is your willingness to give things an honest chance to work for you, only you have the power to do that’ Today I look at those same people with their lives once more in some semblance of order and priority. I see them with a sense of fulfilment as they play their part in helping to keep this church family relevant and at the centre of the spiritual and practical life of this community. No one needs to live feeling their life is going nowhere, or overwhelmed by hopelessness. Things can change for the better, start the process by calling us today.

A word from Cllr Martin Curtis
I have hugely mixed feelings about last month’s elections. Firstly, my own personal result was something that meant a lot to me, when others around me were struggling I maintained more than half of the vote in Whittlesey North and my colleague Ralph Butcher found himself in a situation. I firstly want to say thank you to everyone who supported me, I really appreciate the faith you have showed in me. Irrespective of whether you voted for me or not, I am here to serve Whittlesey North - please contact me if I can help.
Another emotion was sadness from seeing a number of fellow councillors, for whom I have great respect, lose their seats. I know that is what politics is about, but with local Government it always seems that good people lose out because of trends in National politics, it has always been that way and it was definitely the case this time. That said, I know from the feedback I had that the hard work I have done helped mitigate some of that National swing, something I hope others learn from.
Across Cambridgeshire the results meant that the County Council no longer has one party with more than half the seats (a majority), although the Conservatives are by far the largest party with 32 out of 69 - and Nick Clarke, the previous Leader of the Council lost his seat. As a result of this, as I write, I find myself as Leader of the Conservative Group in Cambridgeshire, with a possibility that I will take on the Leadership of the Council next week. This is not how I would have chosen to take on a position of Leadership, but as you know, I do not hide from a challenge. Irrespective of whether I become Leader of the Council, I am always here to serve you, please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can help. any types of hedges can be given their first clipping of the season this month, which will help them keep their shape and stimulate fresh growth. Older hedges may need just a small trim, but young actively growing hedges should be given a substantial prune. Remember to weed underneath the hedge as well. After weeding, add a layer of mulch to suppress any weeds from quickly reappearing. The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout summer so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy. Young tomatoes should be planted outside if they haven’t been already. Side shoots from your tomato plants should be snapped or pinched off as this will help direct the plants energy to the fruit growing on the main stem. Unless you are growing your tomatoes in hanging baskets, it’s a good idea to tie up to canes or supports as your tomato plants are likely to grow some height and get rather heavy. If possible, always add the supports at the same time as you plant to avoid stabbing the roots later on. Bear in mind all tomato plants are

susceptible to whitefly attacks, so consider placing some pots of basil and marigolds near your crops - they act as a great natural insect repellent. While you’ve got the canes out for your tomatoes remember any tall growing plants such as delphiniums, lupins, poppies and climbers need a frame work or canes and string around them to help prevent them being damaged by winds. June is a great month to plant summer bedding plants such as begonias, marigolds, petunias and lobelia. Before planting give the plants a good soaking of water. If it’s a sunny day then try and plant them in the late afternoon or early evening. Don’t forget to water well again after planting. Plant summer hanging baskets with a mixture of upright and trailing plants, such as geraniums, osteospermums, fuchsias and petunias. Mixing contrasting colours, such as lime-green leaves and wine-coloured flowers, is always eye catching. Choose a sunny spot for your hanging basket and remember to water at least once a day, or more frequently, when it’s hot and dry or windy. Regular feeding – once per week in the summer – will also help your basket plants thrive.

Why we sleep?
By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Varsani (Registered Osteopaths) Have you ever wondered why we fall asleep? If so, this article helps is just for you. The key lies in the definition, which is ‘a repeated process that results in a state that can be broken by a stimuli (e.g. a bad dream) in which the conscious control of the body is temporally lost.’ The process of falling asleep is centred around a) the repeated process and b) the loss of control. Let’s analyse further:
a) A repeated process
There are 2 systems at work here which we have named as: i) The gene expression (TIP - read this paragraph slowly) Within all cells exists certain sleep-related proteins. These proteins like to link together. When they do, the product (product A) activates certain genes in your cells which switches them ON (i.e. the cell awakens). The process of cell awakening however releases a substance (substance A) which over a period of time accumulates. Substance A unfortunately breaks apart product A. If product A is broken down then there is nothing left to keep the genes switched on (hence to keep the cell awake) and so the genes turns off and the cell goes back to sleep. Now that the genes are off, there is no substance A and so the proteins are free to bind together once again. Thus creating a repeated ON/OFF cycle. ii) The light effect Imagine that all these ON/Off cycles are happening within each cell throughout your body. Who is synchronising them? The answer is a group of neurons in the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). These cells provide the all important link between the retina [which detects daylight] and the cells. On detecting daylight, the SCN is able to synchronise all the cells into a single cycle. Hence, you sleep when it is dark.
b) Temporary loss of conscious control
In the upper portion of your brain-stem lives a bundle of nerves termed your arousal system. This system is the gate keeper to your brain receiving sensory information from your body. The arousal system (as all cells) is under the control of the SCN which gradually moves the switch from ON to OFF as daylight fades. Therefore, when its dark the arousal system stops the brain receiving sensory information. If the brain receives no information there will be no action, hence you have temporary lost control of your body. As daylight arrives, the arousal system allows information through and you therefore act on it.
Well there you have it, sleep in a nutshell. Two bank holidays this month, enjoy! June 2013 | Discovering

A GOOD DAY TO
DIE HARD
A Good Day to Die Hard is the fifth installment in the Die Hard film series. Bruce Willis returns to play John McClane, who travels to Russia to help his estranged son, Jack (Jai Courtney), out of prison, but is soon caught in the crossfire of a terrorist plot. Breaking free, Jack hides in a safe house, while McClane finds out that his son has been a CIA officer in an undercover operation for the past three years. What ensues is a deadly fight between corrupt Russian officials and father and son. Fans of the franchise will be impressed with the action-packed film, including a car chase scene which won’t fail to excite. Meanwhile the family drama between John and Jack gives A Good Day to Die Hard an emotional level which will appeal to a wide audience. Don’t miss out on the action this month, A Good Day to Die Hard is fun and exciting, and will make a great film to watch.

his is the logo for our entry which was painted by one of our talented Committee members. The 2013 programme is now underway and the entry into the Anglia in Bloom competition has been made and acknowledged. A Committee has been set up and for this year is operating under the office of the Town Council, however, if we are to continue, it is expected that it will become a stand-alone organisation from next year. The Committee is made up of three Town Councillors, a member of Streetpride and SHSCC, four members of the public and supported by representation from Fenland District Council Judging is due to take place on 8 July and a lot of work needs to be done before then! Areas which we refer to as “grot spots” have been identified and where not in local authority ownership, approaches have been made to private landowners and we have been given permission to tidy these up to include in the portfolio which will be sent on to the judges. Obviously some considerable work is required and where these cannot be completed in time for the judging this year can be included as “work in progress”. Obviously if there is anyone out there prepared to do some grafting you will be welcomed with open arms. Planting of the Jubilee beds at the entrance to the Manor Centre has been planned for the end of May/early June and by the time you read this may have been completed. The transformation of the river bank at the Manor Leisure Centre, which during the autumn will also include some planting of snowdrops and bluebells, is on-going and will also be included. The Garden of Rest on Station Road is being transformed. Last year it was a work in progress, and more is being done including the preparation of an Interpretation Board, which will give the history of the site and name the plants and trees within it. I do need to point out that this “Park” has been identified by Fenland District Council as NO DOGS PERMITTED and you can be fined if this is not adhered to. The allotments were praised during last year’s judging and as this year’s RHS Britain in Bloom theme is Edible Britain, where better place to take our judges. Angela Curtis is the “gardening” lead at Sir Harry Smith Community College and part of our Committee; the frontage of the College has now been tidied, seeded and planted by the contractors on completion of the building work. The students are going to be responsible for helping to maintain the area and sorting out the quadrangles. They are also hoping to have a wild life area – another work in progress as they are currently studying for and sitting exams! The students of the College
and New Road School also maintain allotments at New Road which will be part of the Edible Britain representation. Alderman Jacobs School have an after school gardening club which I am due to visit shortly and hopefully they too will be included on our judging route; I have it on good authority that they are growing vegetables this year – another Edible Britain!! I also need to get to Park Lane School where they have a wonderful pond area another thing on my “to do” list!! We have a very willing Committee member who has been extremely busy working away at the Cemetery. As can be seen, the shrubs on the periphery adjacent to Richardson’s Way have been tidied up and new fencing has been erected. Our member has spent many hours clearing and removing debris etc. Our Streetpride member is hoping to put the area onto the Streetpride litterpick programme as a one-off to help. Please note the Cemetery is also a Dog Restricted Zone. During our last meeting it was suggested that a “Friends of the Cemetery” be set up and I agreed to include this to see if anyone would like to be part of such a group. If you are interested, please contact me direct - Kay Mayor at kayfmayot@ hotmail.co.uk or by telephone on 01733 204944 and we will see what can be organised. Groups such as “Friends of” can also be part of the “In Bloom” competition, so it is something worth considering.
If anyone reading this is prepared to help Whittlesey in Bloom in any way, shape or form – including Fund Raising....... please get in touch. June June 2013 2013 || Discovering Discovering

Using a pension to pay off your mortgage
t’s not a new idea, but it could be one of the options for some of the 1.3 million householders that the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) estimate will not have the savings or other funds to pay off their interest only mortgage (BBC News 2nd May 2013). If you have an interest only mortgage, your monthly payments will only be paying off the interest on the amount borrowed. At the end of the agreed term you need to pay back the capital that you used buy the house. In the past householders have used endowment policies, ISAs or some other form of funding plan, however recently interest only mortgages have become much more popular. A more tax efficient way of paying off your mortgage might be to include retirement planning as quite often the end of the mortgage is quite closely linked to retirement. Most will appreciate that a pension fund can provide a tax free lump sum of 25% the total fund value, the remainder can then generate an income or you could delay taking income depending on
Ask the expert today
your circumstances. Another benefit of saving in a pension fund is that you get tax relief up to your highest rate within certain parameters. This means that a contribution of £800 actually invests £1,000, so that’s a pretty good increase in fund size straight away, add to that investment performance potential and the total retirement pot starts to take shape. Without going into too much detail, there are also schemes like Salary Sacrifice and requesting your employer to make payments on your behalf that can make contributions even more tax efficient. So whether you expect to have a mortgage liability to settle before you retire or not you may find a meeting with me time well spent. Delivering Simple Financial Advice – that really works! Charity trek up Kilimanjaro
Kit Pearson, year 12 at Sir Harry Smith, Whittlesey, is planning to travel to Tanzania this June to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. This famous mountain is the tallest in Africa at 19,340 feet above sea level. It is also the highest free-standing mountain in the world (meaning that it is not part of a large range of other mountains). Kit got the taste for such challenges when he completed the 268 mile Pennine Way in 2009 with his dad, Andy. The photo accompanying this article shows him at that time, ready for the off. He wasn’t smiling for much longer!! The Pennine Way is widely regarded as the toughest long distance trail in the UK. Kit and his dad raised over £600 for Cancer Research by completing this trek. For the coming challenge Kit is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support and Andy is raising
money for the Samaritans. • Anyone who wishes to support them and their chosen charities could follow one of these links: Andy: http://www.justgiving.com/ Andrew-Pearson8 Kit: http://www.justgiving.com/ kit-pearson
Kit and Andy are being supported in this adventure by Jones Butchers of Whittlesey who will be running a competition to win a hamper of tasty treats and have already started receiving donations from friends and family. June 2013 | Discovering

In 2012 Dan Butterworth brought his twin daughters to the regular Friday evening training event that Thorney Running Club hold each week at the manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey. Whilst it is aimed at children and those new to running, a few of the regular runners use it as a speed session before the week end. After a few weeks Dan decided to have a run around and quite enjoyed it, and decided to enter the Perkins Great Eastern Run to give him a goal for October 2012. He trained regularly, joined Thorney Running Club and lined up on the day in his second proper race. He came in proudly wearing his Thorney vest in 24th place with a time of 20.35. Dan had lost about four stone, invested in some new trainers and was up for the next challenge. He had run the first of the Frostbite series a week earlier and was intent on running each of them. He improved by one team place each race from 7th scorer to 3rd in the last race held in March 2013. A week after his Frostbite race Dan was lining up in the Milton Keynes Half Marathon to see how close he could get to 90 minutes. On an undulating course in less than ideal weather conditions, Dan finished in 89.08 - a cracking time for a seasoned runner let alone one that had been running for less than a year. One of the motivating factors was the atmosphere created by the Perkins Great Eastern Run. As soon as he finished the 5k race last year he was looking to enter the 2013 full race – and is now looking to break his personal best for the classic half marathon distance (13.1 miles). Not only is Dan running regularly, but so is his partner Emma and their daughters Kelsey and Nicole – the whole family enjoys the Friday evening runs at the Manor.
• If you are inspired to have a go why not join in a training run put on to help new runners, or have a word at one of the local running clubs. Visit www.thorneyrunningclub.co.uk or http://www.gpan.org.uk/clubs.htm.

Secretary, Whittlesey Warriors NBC
Following our success in the Peterborough Netball League last summer, we decided to enter a team in the “Wisbech and District Netball Winter League”, which would run from Sept 2012 – April 2013. Although we had only formed in September 2010, when we started playing at the Manor on a Tuesday evening just for fun and a little exercise, we had now grown in numbers, so much so that we decided to enter two teams under the names Pink & Black (our club colours). We ended up joining the league during what would turn out to be some of the worst weather conditions ever known since the start of the league! Yet despite the weather conditions we grew in experience and became a valued club in the league. At the end of our first season I am very proud to say that Whittlesey Warriors Black ended up runners up in Division three being only held off the top spot by goal difference. Whittlesey Warriors Pink came in an impressive sixth place. What a brilliant start to our netball career. However, we could not have got as far as we have without the help of a few local companies. Special thanks must go to “Hereward Teamwear and Trophies” in Fengate, especially Ady, who designed our club badge for us and supplied us with netballs, clothing and other vital equipment. We also received donations from “McCains” and “The Whittlesey Round Table”, which helped us to enter teams in the netball leagues. Recently we have received club bags from “Jones the Butchers”, who have kindly offered to sponsor us. I must also thank all the members of Whittlesey Warriors Netball Club that have put Whittlesey firmly on the netballing map, so thank you:- Nic Phillips, Emma Lazenby, Bridget Hill, Kirsty Hills, Louise Riley, Louise Phillips, Julia Dunmore, Mel Barkess, Alison Briggs, Elaine May, Cheryl Lindsay, Sarah Teasdale, Natalie Hulley, Gemma Barber, Tanith Holman, Kerry Stapley, Fran Rickards, Louise Band, Ros Lambert, Sharon Pacey, Alison White, Sarah Wells, Danielle Heaney and Julie Mucklin. • Anyone interested in joining us we train at Sir Harry Smith College on a Tuesday evening, please check out our facebook page or email me for further details – melbarkess@hotmail.co.uk June 2013 | Discovering

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Another busy month for Whittlesey Lions Club April was another busy month for local group, Whittlesey and District Lions Club. On Wednesday 24th April 2013, the group held their annual Charity Golf Day at Ramsey Golf Club. This year nine teams of four entered. The day commenced with a bacon butty and coffee before they went out onto the fairways. After the event a meal was served, followed by prize presentations and a raffle. The winners were Peterborough Lions Club. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and requested the event be held next year. The evening raised a very impressive £550, which is to be donated to East Anglia's Children's Hospices (E.A.C.H.) Then on Sunday 28th April 2013, Whittlesey Lions held their 22nd Charter Lunch which is the anniversary of the formation of the Club. 60 persons from other local Lions Clubs, other Whittlesey organisations and friends attended. The event was held at St. Andrews Hall in Parkinson's Lane. There was an informal lunch of a hog roast supplied by a local butcher. Whilst

Quiz Night for Cystic Fibrosis
There will be a quiz night at Ebenezer's pub in Woodston on the 28th June to raise money for cystic fibrosis, organised by Shelley Filomeno in memory of an old school friend from primary school who suffered with the awful genetic disease. Sadly Clare Cruickshank (who was placed on the list for a double lung transplant), passed away on the 15th of April 2013, she was just 26 years old. Following this tragedy, Shelley aims to raise as much awareness about the organ donor transplant scheme and cystic fibrosis, to help other people suffering with the condition. To raise as much money as possible, she has decided to complete a sponsored hair cut with a difference – she’s going to shave it off! In just one month Shelley has managed to raise £700. If you would like to donate to this great cause, please visit https://www.justgiving.com/Shelley-Filomeno1 Tickets for the quiz night are £2.50 and can be purchased from Shelley on 07714 421932 or via email sfilomeno@hotmail.co.uk.
