aving a baby and still working has given me a new respect for all mothers (and fathers) - those who are fortunate enough not to need to work, and those who continue to juggle the many demands being a parent entails. As difficult as it is at times to get up and start the day on only a handful of hours sleep, I wouldn’t change my life in anyway. I continue to love editing this magazine, since it was my first baby, and Dylan will soon learn to be mummy’s little assistant. As you can see this month is a bumper issue, with even more pages of local news. We’re very excited to be offering two tickets to the Magic of the Musicals evening later this month. If you would like a chance to win the tickets, simply turn to page 43. There is also lots of local school news this month, including an invitation to an open evening at Sir Harry Smith Community College. I had the priviledge of popping down to the college only last month and I was blown away by the changes. If you remember the school as it used to be, grey corridors, slightly battered lockers and chewing gum on the floors, then you must make a date this month to have a good look around - I promise you won’t believe how much it has changed. Last month saw the very first cycle race, starting and finishing in Whittlesey. Did you make it out to support Circuit of the Fens? What did you think? We have a post-race report on page 66 and 67. Finally there is an exciting update about the new Eastrea Hall on page 63, plus an invitation for you to join the residents of Eastrea at a Heritage Weekend on the 20th and 21st of July. Prepare to be ‘Wowed’ at the Whittlesey Festival With so much to do and see at the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday September 15 you will be spoilt for choice as to what to do ﬁrst. With a whole programme of events running from 10.30am – 4.30pm and tons of attractions there is something for everyone to enjoy. We are delighted to announce that there will be a flyover by a Spitfire which is guaranteed to ‘wow’ the crowds. We also welcome for the first time The Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers Band. The band was originally formed in 1936 and is a member of the Carnival Bands Association. It is still widely popular today with all age groups . Their distinctive uniform consists of Red Grenadier Guard Style tunics , white trousers with a red stripe and Bearskin type hats. Their instruments range from trumpets, saxophones , drums and many more that will keep you entertained as you relax and enjoy the Festival. Other entertainers that are new this year include ‘living statues’ that will amaze you with their ability to keep in character for hours on end. Also making their debut at the Festival are the Hereward Harmony Barbershop Singers and

the Whittlesey Wind Ensemble. There will be music to suit all tastes throughout the day with a wide variety of singers and musicians as well as dance groups including, Majorettes Dance and Twirl , line dancing , dance using Flags and Rods by the Whittlesey Christian Church dance group and many others. The Beautiful Baby Competition which every year attracts so many adorable babies will once again be held at the Ivy Leaf Club . Registration is at 11.30am, judging at 12 noon and presentations at 12.30 . The winner will receive a complimentary portrait session courtesy of ‘The Studio’ in Whittlesey. LOCAL SCHOOL NEWS New Road School Dance the Maypole

Here at New Road School we have taught our children traditional Maypole dances for over 30 years. This year, the children worked very hard to learn the intricate dances and had great fun practising and, occasionally, tangling themselves up in the Maypole ribbons. All their hard work and enthusiasm paid off when their parents and families were invited to school to watch them perform. We were lucky with the weather and anyone passing by our school, located next door to Lattersey Nature Reserve, may have heard the music, laughter and applause. Once the children had finished, parents and staff were invited to dance. The whole school agreed that the children were much better at Maypole dancing than the grown ups. Each class at New Road takes part and the difficulty of the dance increases with the age of the children. This year we did the Barber’s Pole, Spider’s Web and Plaiting dances. For the Plaiting dance the children move around the Maypole in a circle and intertwine their ribbons into a plait, then retrace their steps to unravel the ribbons. Our Maypole and dancers are now having a well earned rest until next year. 8

School might be out for summer, but our local schools have been busy....

Pampered Pond at Park Lane Whittlesey Mayor and Mayoress ofﬁcially open the newly revamped Pond Area at Park Lane Primary and Nursery School. The old pond area was very bare and didn’t attract much wildlife. A successful lottery bid secured money to revamp the area and the project was called ‘Pamper our Pond’. Pupils, staff and parents were asked for ideas of how to develop the pond area. Ideas were pooled and along with James, from Froglife and his expert knowledge the project began. Margaret Leverett, Headteacher at Park Lane and Nursery School said: “Our new pond area created by James from Froglife has encompassed ideas from the children, staff and parents.

“Pamper our Pond has been a very successful project at Park Lane. All of the school community has helped to create the wonderful, exciting and stimulating Outdoor Learning Area.” The area contains 2 ponds, one for fish and one for other water creatures including frogs. A pond dipping area, seating and waterfall are some of the wonderful features. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to making this a fantastic outdoor area, especially James from Froglife.

LOCAL SCHOOL NEWS

Wet and Wild at Alderman Jacobs Primary School After a year without their beloved swimming pool, the children at Alderman Jacobs Primary School were ecstatic to be able to swim again when they returned to school after their half term break. Extensive refurbishment work has been carried out over the past few months and the pool is “even better than when I swam in it as a youngster” said one of the parents recently. The children at Alderman Jacobs receive up to three sessions a week in the pool over the summer term and we also host the local swimming gala for the primary schools in the area at the end of the term. In a recent pupil survey, when asked what they thought the best thing about their school was, the majority replied by saying “the pool!” Next door to the pool has also been a hive of activity over the past few weeks as a new wildlife garden has been created for use by the children and hopefully the wider community. We were successful in securing a National Lottery grant to make this project happen, and are thrilled with the results. The better weather has ensured that children from all year groups are engaging in outdoor learning activities from pond dipping, wildlife hunting and observations to mapping and species identification. The long term plan is to establish a wildlife club who can look after the garden after school and really

encourage and attract a wide variety of plants and bugs to take up home at Alderman Jacobs. Talking of “wildlife”....it’s amazing who you see wandering around our school! This week has seen the second of our parents in school week, when Dads from every year group have been invited into school to spend time with their child in their classroom and learning environments experiencing a taste of what school is like for today. The week has been very well attended with over 150 dads in attendance joining in a variety of activities including: art work, PE, Drama, and ICT as well as Literacy and Numeracy. One dad said “It was great fun and I enjoyed seeing how things have changed since I was at school!” Another said “The facilities at school are very impressive” All agreed that they would like to come back again. ADave word from Mason My first month in office as Chairman of Whittlesey Town Council and Town Mayor has flown by and I now appreciate why my predecessor attended to her admin late at night - there simply are not enough hours in the day! When somebody new takes over in any organisation, changes are inevitable and the running of a Town Council is no exception with new committees to be formed, arranging of a civic calendar for the year to be organised and for colleagues within the council to adjust to the workings of a new head. I have been especially fortunate to have an enthusiastic team of councillors supporting me, a Deputy Mayor in Councillor Mrs Dee Laws giving me the benefit of her experience as a previous Mayor, a very understanding Town Clerk in Mrs Sue Evans guiding me through the everyday administration of a Town Council and not least a wife, Ann, multitasking as Mayoress and Chauffeur on official visits whilst attending to many secretarial duties behind the scenes. Attendance at a variety of events in the past month has been both an honour and a pleasure whilst allowing me to focus on my nominated Mayor’s charities for the coming year and three particular visits stand out in my mind in assisting me in my choice of charities. A visit to Market Deeping for the Civic Service in St Guthlac’s Church featured the local Sunday School children displaying their work to the local congregation. The “Mayors Walk” or preview of the Wisbech Arts Festival demonstrated all that is good in the community, taking in not only the history of the town but the tremendous amount of voluntary work undertaken to improve the quality of life for all. Finally a visit to Park Lane Primary School in Whittlesey to officially open their magnificent nature garden and pond which had been created from ideas of the children in conjunction with the voluntary organisation known as Froglife. My thoughts were therefore directed to the improvement of education throughout our own community in Whittlesey and how the Town Council and myself in particular could achieve this aim. To this end I have entered into discussions with our primary schools on how best I can support them by attending their school events throughout the year. Arrangements are currently being made to hold a full Whittlesey Town Council meeting at Sir Harry Smith Community College in October to coincide with the students’ Democracy Week and to allow them to view their own Town Council in action at close quarters. Subject to his availability

we are hoping that our Member of Parliament, Steve Barclay, will also be able to join us on that occasion. Education is at the heart of developing individuals to their full potential and I have therefore decided to support two organisations within the town who contribute immensely in providing the necessary framework for us all to improve our quality of life should we so desire. For the young people I have decided to nominate as my first charity the Whittlesey Scouts and Guides Association to assist in the funding of all their various groups. Secondly, for the community as a whole, I will be raising funds for the Friends of Whittlesey Library. As many of you are aware, funding is difficult for our local libraries with many throughout the country being forced into closure whilst others survive on the goodwill of volunteers and fundraising events. In the past Ann and I, in conjunction with Cllrs Ken and Kay Mayor, have held quiz nights to do whatever we can to assist our local library and I will therefore continue to support this worthy cause through my charity fund. Finally, having considered our young people and the community as a whole in terms of education we must not forget those members of our society who have given us the benefit of their efforts throughout their lives to make Whittlesey a better place in which to live. I am speaking of our senior citizens and so my third charity will be the Community Navigators, an organisation of volunteers who help older people find their way to activities or services such as a community car scheme, friendship club, modifications at home such as mobility aids and financial health checks. I would ask you all to support me by contributing to these charities at future events throughout the year. Next month I will update you on current events including public consultations on our railway station, discussions with Stagecoach on our bus services, the Whittlesey cycle race entitled “Circuit of the Fens” and hopefully much more.

Our next project is coming… ou are probably aware that besides our very pro-active Litter-picking events, we have nine other projects in the area. One of these is the ‘Whittlesea Wayfarer’, a boat on Station Road, full of plants and flowers. Alas, it has not weathered well and is looking a bit sad. Our Street Pride member Eddie Bloy took on the task of renovating one of our ‘spares’ during the cold winter months. We are very grateful for all his hard work and we will replace and re-launch with the ‘Whittlesea Wayfarer II’ during the month of June. Our sponsor Anthea Head of Decker Bus has been very supportive of our Group over the last 4 years. Of course with the very poor start to spring, we have been catching up on our maintenance; what a nice little spot we have at the top of Church Street, which we call the Rose Garden. Three years ago this was a real grot spot within our town, and we have transformed it into a smart very full mini garden – roses, climbers and bushes. All the work is carried out by Street Pride members. We are very fortunate to live in a relatively clean and tidy town and villages, with our help maintaining our environment; it is a great shame that a minority cause issues and problems. Our projects have suffered from mindless vandalism on a number of occasions. We also

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Ladysmith W.I. The June meeting of Ladysmith W.I. was our 42nd birthday party so we put up bunting and enjoyed summer punch and lovely food. Local band, The Islanders, gave us music from various decades and we had a rocking good evening. Our trip out to Thorney on 9th July will include a guided tour of Thorney Abbey (meeting there at 6pm) plus Thorney Museum, followed by a meal at the Rose and Crown. Whittlesey Festival Fund Raising Coffee Morning We held our 2nd Festival Coffee Morning on Saturday 8th June and it was a huge success and we raised an amazing £400. It was a great morning and my thanks go to everyone who came along and supported us. A special thank you to the Nova Club ladies, who once again, worked extremely hard on the lovely refreshments. Thanks also to all who brought along the many raffle prizes. We were entertained by singer David Bailey, who I would like to thank for giving up his whole morning for us and for doing such a great job of calling out the bingo numbers! The people of Whittlesey are so supportive of the Festival and this is greatly appreciated. I look forward to seeing you all with your friends and families on the 15th September. Street Lighting

eeing the work progressing in putting into force the programme for replacing the lamp standards got me wondering just when Whittlesey had street lighting in the first place. As early as the 1840s, Whittlesey had formed a lighting committee comprised of John Waddelow (Chairman) Charles Smith, Charles Boyce, Thomas Johnson and William Read. In 1843, this committee entered into an agreement with the firm of William Morley Stears of Hull to excavate the roads, lay gas mains and erect forty five lamps throughout the Town in positions where indicated. They were to light and maintain the lamps during the lighting season which extended from 30th September until 1st April the following year. The cost of erecting the lamps varied from £2.120d to £5.12.0d depending upon the type of bracket or pillar used. The cost of lighting them with a 3” naked flame was £3.3.0d per season. Quite where the money to pay for this cam from was not disclosed and raising money through the implementation of rates levied on property did not come into force until 1849. At the end of the season, each lamp had the gas turned off to enable the lamps to be removed and any repairs carried out. Some of the lamps appeared to have been maliciously broken and a reward of one guinea was offered for information leading to a conviction. The accounts do not show any reward money being paid however! An additional 16 lamps were erected in 1850 but these had to be lit with oil due to a lack of an available gas main. The number of lamps continued to grow and by 1854 had risen to seventy one with additional lamps in 1861 reaching as far as the railway station gates. By now the town lighting came under the jurisdiction of the Whittlesey Improvement Commissioners and one of their members was recorded as knocking down a lamp in Old Whittlesey (Queen Street) whilst driving a horse and cart. He agreed to pay for the damage caused! A running battle ensued between the Commissioners and the Whittlesey Gas and Coke Company from 1863 until 1874 on how much and on what basis to charge and pay for the gas used. This relationship was further soured when one of the Commissioners workmen ‘allegedly broke the main gas pipe near the Town Hall. Gas escaped for three days before the main pipe was repaired, the resulting stench driving people from their homes.

In 1874,to avoid further arguments, the Commissioners decided to go their own way and light all the lamps with oil. The change over was frantically organised with the gas being turned off at each lamp and Mrs Mary Smith supplying replacement burners, wicks and oil at 1s2d per gallon. Two lamps lighters were employed, John Harrison and William Oldfield. Barrow had to be manufactured to carry the ladders and the drum containing the oil. Oil was being supplied in 40 gallon drums by a George Seward to Whittlesey railway station at 9d per gallon. In 1883, negotiations with Mr. H.B.Hartley (Secretary) and Mr. B.W.Ground of the Whittlesey Gas and Coke Co. an agreement was reached to again light the lamps with gas on the same terms of 5s0d per 100 cubic feet of gas used, that the Company had rejected in 1868!! Ladders were abandoned in favour of a lighting staff and Srealite Float Lamp Governors were obtained from Messers Suggs to give a better light. Some lamps however, still had to be lit by pil and local shopkeepers C.E.Boultbe, J.Cavell, W.Woodhouse and J.Fordham tendered for the supply. The successful tenderer is not known, but the price was still 9d per gallon. To give some idea, gas lighting the town from September 1892 until April 1893 was £127.0.0. The applicants for the job of lamp lighter were in plentiful supply, despite the unsociable hours they had to work. A word from Revd Nigel and Revd Gill Baptism is a sacrament of God in His Church. A sacrament means an outward sign of inward grace. The outward sign in Baptism is becoming a member of the Christian Church through the pouring of water over the head and the saying of the words: “I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

The inward grace is God’s saving and cleansing gift of faith. In each celebration of Baptism we give thanks that this person has become part of the worldwide Christian church. A Baptism marks the start of someone’s life of faith. Many Christian Churches recognise that when a Baptism is celebrated in their church or chapel it is also accepted as membership of other Christian churches. Baptism is available for anyone of any age. One thing we ask is that when Baptism is for a baby or child that they have Godparents who will answer for them during the service. To be a Godparent does require that the person has been baptised. Since January 1st 2013 it has been our policy to hold Baptisms on the First and Third Sundays of the month. The Baptisms will not be individual unless only one

The start of a new season on fenland waters in the Whittlesey area got off to a flying start despite summer coming rather later than expected a spell of warmer weather did wonders for the fishing. The Twenty Foot Drain is a renowned hotspot for early season bream action and once again it did not disappoint those that were out over the first weekend. We can expect it to improve too as we head through what should be the peak time for bream and tench fishing. Cock Bank should be well worth a visit, do not forget to take worms with you and a few red maggots and casters for the hook. Glassmore Bank will undoubtedly be one of the better drains for the bream fishing and pike anglers should also get in some summer lure and spinner action on this drain. The Whittlesey Dyke that runs at the back of the town started the season really well and should continue to produce roach and skimmer weights.

Upstream of the Ashline Sluice bread punch seems to be the best approach, downstream pinkie and ground bait is a better option. The Whittlesey angling club have already got their Junior matches underway, but you can always pop along every Tuesday evening. The weekly matches are held from 5.30pm till 8pm and parents are encouraged to go along to watch, or even help the youngsters catch a few fish. It takes place behind the industrial estate on Station Road. All that is required is a £4 junior handbook and for those over 12 a junior rod licence. There are no entry fees but there will be prizes and cup to be won. After the matches have finished you have around 30 miles of fenland waters to enjoy the sport of angling, great value for money I am sure you will agree. Whittlesey Christian Church Who Created What?

Trying to make sense of the countless number of theories attempting to explain creation can be confusing to say the least. It’s certainly not my intention to use this month’s editorial to add to that confusion. However I did come across a really interesting account which will hopefully go a little way to explaining why Christians quite naturally believe in the God of creation. An avid bird watcher had been observing 2 birds nesting in a forest near his home. One day as the mother returned with food to feed her young, he observed a snake approaching the nest in order to kill and eat them. Everything in him expected the mother to swoop down just as the snake was about to strike and sacrifice her life to save her young. To his amazement she circled a couple of times then flew off only to return a few moments later with a leaf in her mouth which she promptly dropped just as the snake was about to strike. Seeing the leaf the snake instantly slithered away. Out of curiosity he retrieved the leaf and spoke to a friend specialising in trees. On hearing the story his friend explained how that the tree from which this leaf came is so rare that he could search the forest for days and never find it. He also pointed out that for the snake to touch this leaf would mean certain death. Yet at this crucial time the bird knew exactly where to find it in order to protect her young. Despite previously professing to be an atheist,

the more he considered the questions this experience raised the more he found himself being drawn into wondering whether there was something behind the lessons he had heard during his Sunday School days. How did the bird know exactly where to find the tree in this moment of crisis? Who created this snake to be afraid of this particularly leaf? Who created this particular type of bush? The more he pondered the things surrounding this intriguing experience the more he found himself being drawn into discovering a meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ. One thing it does show us is how much God really cares for us. If He goes to such lengths to protect and care for a young bird, how much more is He willing to do the same for humanity if we would only truly allow Him to. A word from Cllr Martin Curtis

Since becoming Leader of Cambridgeshire County Council a month ago, I have spent a huge amount of time discussing and working on infrastructure projects for the County. In particular, the A14 upgrade which I hope the Government will soon announce it is going to deliver (with some contributions from Cambridgeshire), and the City Deal (which is about improving Cambridge City and its surroundings to prepare for business growth) both of these are absolutely vital projects to help our County’s economy forwards. It is important for us to realise that these all relate to Whittlesey. Improving the A14 and delivering the new science park railway station in the City will really open Cambridge up as an area of possible employment for Whittlesey - especially if we can improve our own lot by increasing the number of trains stopping at Whittlesea Station and providing better access to the A1 by building Kings Dyke Bridge. Both of these local projects are still very much on the agenda - despite what remains a difficult financial situation because of funding reductions. This is the big conflict that all of local Government is dealing with; If we want to move our economy forwards we have to find a way of funding improvements to

our infrastructure at a time when there is less money. But, the truth is, we must ensure that projects like Kings Dyke, Whittlesea Station upgrade, superfast broadband, the A14 upgrade and the City Deal are delivered, because they are the route out of the financial hardships that the public sector faces - this is even more important than ever because funding has changed so that we now benefit from future increases in business rate income in the County. When it comes down to it, that growth is how we will ensure we can continue to fund the vital support we provide for vulnerable adults and children. We are lucky here, our Town Council are also very, very focussed on the Whittlesey infrastructure issues - that focus will help me and Ralph Butcher, as County Councillors, to do everything we can to keep the momentum that has developed over the last few years so we can make the Whittlesey projects come to fruition. 2 small ham hocks, (i sell these in the shop); sunﬂower oil, for greasing; 2 tbsp wholegrain mustard; small handful parsley, chopped; 1 sheet geletine

Stock:

500ml cider; 2 carrots, chopped; 2 celery sticks, chopped; 1 large onion, chopped; 2 bay leaves, fresh or dried; 6 thyme sprigs; 3 star anise 6 whole peppercorns

Instructions:

1. Put the ham hocks in a large pan with the stock ingredients. Cover with cold water. Set over a high heat and bring to the boil. Reduce to a simmer, cook for 21⁄2-3 hrs or until the meat falls from the bone. Leave to cool in the pan. 2. Grease a 1 litre terrine mould or loaf tin with oil, then line with cling film. Remove the hocks, strain the stock through a sieve into a pan. 3. Shred the ham, leaving some large chunks, removing as much fat as possible. In a large bowl mix the ham with the mustard and parsley. Press the mixture into the prepared terrine. 4. Bring the stock back to a rapid boil and reduce by half. You should have about 600ml liquid remaining. Remove from the heat. Meanwhile soak the gelatine in cold water for 5 mins to, remove and squeeze out any excess liquid. Add the gelatine to the hot stock and stir. 5. Pour enough of the stock over the ham to just cover. Tap terrine firmly on a hard surface to knock out air pockets, then cover with cling film. Chill for 3-4 hrs or overnight. To serve, remove from the mould and carve into chunky slices. During prolonged dry spells water pots at least once a day. If your pots are drying out too quickly or you’re planning to go away on holiday, group your pots together in a cooler spot - that way, they’ll need watering less often. Bedding plants, roses and many other perennials benefit from regular deadheading. This will prolong the flowering period, making the garden more attractive, and will also prevent the plants from channelling their energy into seed heads. Simply pinch off the fading flowers, or for tougher branches use secateurs. A lot of plants will also benefit from summer feeding - in roses for example it can encourage a second flush in autumn. July is a good month to ensure you keep your lawn healthy. ‘What is it?’ we hear you ask. The best visual reference [apologies to all our vegetarian readers] is the shiny stringy ﬁlm like substance that is visible when preparing meat. All mammals have it but why does it exist? Fascia is an exciting new area in medicine and in particularly in manual therapy. Osteopaths have been working with it for many decades however research is only now appreciating its importance. Before surgeons used to simply ignore it and cut through it with little regard for its relevance. However, this tissue plays an important role in the long term (termed chronic) aches and pains we feel. As the majority of our patients are long term suffers of pain, it is something we have become accustom to working with.

Think of fascia as a continuous sheet of cling film that wraps around all our structures (i.e. our bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and organs) starting at the head and working its way down to our feet. What does it do? Well it provides a loose binding between all the structures keeping them together and in the same place. I.e. it keeps the blood vessels close to the muscles, the nerves close to the blood vessels, the muscles close to the bones, etc. It works in a similar way to how we use cling film. Because the fascia is the connection between different structures it also transmits forces between them thus allowing the body to work as a unit rather than as individual parts. Each individual, dependent on their lifestyle, will have a different baseline fascial tension. In the event of injury the fascia is guaranteed to be damaged because it is everywhere. Thus the fascial tension will increase. This will transmit tension throughout the body and is usually the culprit for distant [from the site of injury] pulling or stretching pains. The complex path of the fascia also means that it is difficult for the excess fascial tension to be resolved. In many cases, the fascial tension remains long after the structure (e.g. the muscle or nerve) has healed. In these patients we commonly see repeated episodes of symptoms or very prolonged recoveries. As osteopaths our treatment approach always looks to address the tension in the fascia as well as helping the damaged structure, i.e. the muscle, tendon, joint or spine. LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Sing for Heroes 2013! New choir seeks 40 men to sing their hearts out! If the only audience to hear you sing is your collection of rubber ducks in the bathroom you might be a little shy at unleashing your vocal talents in public. But award winning choral conductor Will Prideaux is convinced he could get you hitting the right notes in just 12 weeks as part of a new male choir. Sing for Heroes! is being launched by Peterborough Male Voice Choir with the aim of taking 40 men with a range of musical experience (including none!) and - over the course of 12 weeks - turning them into a choir to perform on the same bill as the renowned PMVC in a charity concert at The Voyager Theatre in aid of Help for Heroes. In 2010 and 2011 the project saw over 100 men performing and since 2010 Sing for Heroes!, together with sister choir Peterborough Voices’ Sing For Life for Cancer Research, has raised a staggering £20,000 plus for charity. So successful has Sing for Heroes! proved as a recruitment initiative, Will has been contacted by Leeds Male Voice Choir in the hope that he can turn their membership around before their Centenary in 2016. As a result, this year the project will be rolled out simultaneously in Peterborough and in Leeds, where it will culminate in a charity concert for Help for Heroes at the stunning Leeds Town Hall on 13th October. As the brains behind the project Will is not facing an easy task, but his credentials as musical director and conductor of the Peterborough Male Voice Choir should stand him in good stead. Mark Currier from the choir says: "Will is our secret weapon. He is extremely experienced in helping ordinary men find their voice and discover the joy of singing. We are not looking for an Elvis or a Pavarotti," Mark laughs, "just guys who want to come along and enjoy singing together." Will says: "The whole idea of the project is to bring these people together as a community. While some find it naturally easy to sing, for others it has to be developed. The first thing is to have the confidence to come and have a go. We have an age range of between 16 and 75 in the current choir and there is no age restriction whatsoever!” "We are not looking for 100 per cent in musicality, but 100 per cent in terms of enthusiasm," says Mark, "All we are asking is come to an introductory session and find out more."

What do you know about us?

We have transformed a furniture retail warehouse situated about two hundred metres over the station road level crossing into a five rink bowling arena and have a membership of over 250 of which a third are ladies. Our main activities are held from September to April when our members are able to play bowls in a comfortable warm environment, enjoying this great game in a friendly yet competitive way. Bowls is a game of skill where finesse usually triumphs over force and where ladies are equal to the men, (or even better!) As in the past three years, we are running a free introductory six week programme, starting at 9.00am on 3rd. August where experienced bowlers will be on hand on each rink to help and

instruct. In past years, this has resulted in about thirty new players joining the club annually. All we ask of you is that you bring a pair of flat-soled shoes to use on the rinks – we provide whatever else is required. In addition to the bowling we run a variety of social events during the winter months and have a licensed bar. If you need to know more, call in on Tuesday or Thursday mornings to see members in action or telephone the club. If no one is available, just leave your name and number and we will get back to you. You have nothing to lose by coming, the sessions are free and we even have a half time break for refreshments and chat. We look forward to your company.

Born in Whittlesey, and growing up exploring the fens, photographer Kerry Chapman quickly fell in love with the landscape. “No-one can deny that we do GREAT skies out here,” she explains, and unsurprisingly she takes beautiful photographs of the place where she lives and loves. Kerry has been taking photos since receiving a camera one Christmas, at the age of 14. “I used to cycle out into the fens taking pictures on it. It was a big, square Kodak camera that took a film cartridge that gave 12 photos...the ones you had to pull out and hold under your jacket to develop!” Over the years she has been taking photos, but it wasn’t until a chance meeting with a school friend and her husband three years ago, that she decided to take things further. Spotting her natural talent, Kerry’s friend invited her to try out their professional camera. “I was all fingers and thumbs to begin with but my love of capturing images soon overcame my awkwardness and I REALLY didn’t want to give it back!” After saving up, Kerry purchased her first

professional camera and an 18-70mm lens (which is still her favourite now). Over the next two years she gradually developed her skills, before deciding to go professional. Since then Kerry has photographed weddings both in this county and others, capturing mums and babys, corporate events and even pets. Kerry adds “I love meeting the families and children, and generally get tied up in the day along with everyone else.” And when asked what was her inspiration, Kerry told us “My real motivation for taking up photography was the fen landscape. udging Day is Monday 8 July, commencing at 1.45 pm with the Committee being interviewed prior to a tour of the Town and all areas that have been identified in the Portfolio which has previously been sent to the

Judges. Worthy of mention this year is the work done at the Moorings and river bank of the Bower River to open up the area. It is intended that shortly picnic tables and benches will be sited there and during the autumn the In Bloom team will be planting bluebells and snowdrops under the trees to brighten the area up in the Spring. Similarly a forgotten and neglected area is currently being refurbished; that is The Pound, sited on Aliwal Road. The garden was very overgrown. This has been cleared, the paving re-laid, new planting is being put in and it is hoped that the seating that was in situ can be refurbished and it can be used as a quiet area. Planting of the Jubilee beds at the entrance to the Manor Centre was later than expected because of the weather and the seasons being delayed. Completed on 19 June it is hoped that some colour will be showing when the judges visit. Having visited Alderman Jacobs Gardening Club and the Sir Harry Smith Community College I can only say how impressed I am with what has been achieved by the young people. The younger students at AJS are growing vegetables and salads, fruit trees are planted in quadrangles and I am really looking forward to the judges seeing their efforts. At the College I am appreciative that the contractors did landscape the frontage on Eastrea Road, but the builder’s rubble that was left in other garden areas that has had to be removed before work could commence was unbelievable.

Eastrea Centre

Our picture shows the new Eastrea Centre last month just before the fitted furniture began to arrive. With a spacious hall seating some 200 people, this spectacular new village hall is fully digitised – cables for audio and video are hidden throughout the building so that computer presentations and films can be shown easily. Eastrea residents started collecting money for their hall during WWII, and this hall was 20 years in the making. The centre will be officially opened by Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, on Wednesday 17 July 2013. The building is of interest to the Duke, who graduated as an architect from Cambridge

The students have worked extremely hard to get five gardens looking something like presentable. Keep up the good work, the judges will be visiting you on the eighth. The Cemetery is really looking splendid now. Unfortunately we had some issues when the contractors continued to cut the grass during rain and it was left looking a mess. Hopefully it will look spick and span on the eighth. We are still wanting volunteers to be part of a “Friends” group for the Cemetery, so don’t be shy, pick up the phone or email me please and we can work together to keep this tranquil area looking splendid. If you are

The allotments are continually being monitored by the Project Committee of the Town Council, and they are looking really good. Don’t forget this area got a really worthy mention from the judges last year and as the theme this year is Edible Britain, this is an obvious stop on the tour. The fantastic work carried out by the Streetpride group is also taken into account on the judging tour. Last but not least, the hanging baskets are up in Town and once again we thank the Town Council for its commitment in providing these on an annual basis. Without the support of the Town Council the In Bloom committee would not be here, I will continue to put as much enthusiasm into this as I can.

Success for

Circuit of the Fens

irstly I would like to extend a thanks to all of the people of Whittlesey for the allowing us to disrupt your town, I hope you had a great day, the feedback and the warmth of the welcome my team have had is amazing. Sunday 16th of June saw the culmination of a huge amount of work that has been in the planning for 2 years. We wanted to organise a major national sporting event utilising the unique terrain offered by the fens and most of all we wanted a welcoming town to host the finish. As an organiser we were looking for an open minded and dynamic council to work with. From the first meeting it was obvious to me and Colin Coe that we had struck Gold. Not only with the route we could use, making it exciting for the cyclists to attract an elite field, but also with the council who welcomed us with open arms. Chief amongst this was the then mayor Kay Mayor and a special mention is deserved for Gary Swan. Gary moved heaven and earth to attract us to the town and then to facilitate its organisation.

He worked tirelessly to help us make this happen and we are very grateful. The rest of the council and the local police were also major reasons why we staged this race here. All of the people of Whittlesey and Benwick were so welcoming and positive it made our job so much easier. Moving to the race the circuit delivered everything we were hoping of in sporting terms. Nigel Mansells UK youth team rode a dynamic and aggressive race to secure the top three places over. The race had everything the wide exposed open fields, the wind, the dangers that lurked in Wype Drove and the town centre finish. The crowds were beyond our expectations. While the race was on Gary and I drove the course and it was amazing to see people supporting and cheering even in the remote parts of the course. It looked like one big all day party in Benwick and the atmosphere at the start and finish in Whittlesey was electric. I have really fond memories of this event and the people of Whittlesey. For next year we would

Come and see how the College has changed truly love to get this event premier status. This is the next level of event up and gives the race a national and international dimensions. We will have much work to do this both in logistical cycling terms but also in practical terms for the town. It would attract international riders and considerable TV coverage but at the same time we have to find a way of making the town centre laps safer for riders and the public. We can only do that with the support of the community as it would require static full road closures in the town for 40 minutes on a Sunday afternoon. I am aware that not everyone wants a major international sporting event on their front door but it is my sincere hope that we can find a way of bringing a premier race to the town next year. Now that Whittlesey has experienced a taster of what it is like I hope that people will get behind our plans for next year. I know that Gary, the council and I will work tirelessly to make it happen.
