s I write this, the royal baby is on his/her way, it’s a heatwave outside and there is a real sense of euphoria in the air - it seems a far cry from this time last year when it was raining and felt as though summer wasn’t ever going to arrive. Making the most of the beautiful weather last month were various events such as the school fetes, Coates Village Show (of which there is a report on page 51), and many others including the opening of the brand new Eastrea Village Hall. I popped along to the Heritage Weekend, which took place late in July at the new hall, and I was blown away with what is such a beautiful building. If you get the chance, do pay them a visit, I think you will be very pleasantly suprised. You will also find a report on the opening of the hall on pages 8 and 9. This month is no less exciting, we have lots of interesting local stories, including an egg throwing competition which meant a win for a local lad, more information about the Summer Festival, which is now only a month away, and lots of charity stories which are bound to inspire. Well done to our winner, Steve, of last month’s competition to win tickets to watch the Magic of the Musicals and watch out for more competitions to come. Finally Jenni Gostic would like to say a big thank you to Mickey and Kelly Birch for organising the Memorial Match for Danny Baxter on the 6th of July. The shirts Blue Star wore were a lovely tribute and the amount raised for Cancer Research was amazing. They would also like to thank both teams as it was an extremely hot day, and to everybody who supported it by making it possible to raise such an amount. But most of all, Cover picture by a big thank you for remembering Jenni’s Chris Brudenell son Danny. Have a brilliant August, fingers crossed the sun keeps on shining.

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Whittlesey Primary Schools work together to celebrate

International Day

Primary school pupils from Whittlesey spent the day working together to celebrate an International Day. A grant to improve working links between the local schools made this day possible.

Pupils from all four primary schools in Whittlesey joined together for an International Day. It involved lots of practical, fun activities related to different continents of the world. All Reception children worked at Coates Primary school; Year 1 pupils worked at New Road primary school; Year 2, 3 & 6 pupils worked at Alderman Jacobs primary school and Year 4 and 5 worked here at Park Lane. Lorraine Quince, IT Support/Press Officer at Park Lane said: “This was an exciting day for our pupils, giving them the opportunity to make new friends and work with other children of the same age. “It had a great community atmosphere and firmly laid the foundations for the working partnership to move forward and plan more days like this.” Some quotes from our Year 4 pupils were: “we had loads of fun; it was amazing to go to different schools and meet new people; the activities were fantastic; we made lots of new friends with people we didn’t know before.” Parents and grandparents were invited to join their child for the day in the relevant school which helped to make this day a huge success. A fantastic opportunity for all involved.

Creative Competition Celebrates East Anglian Museums

Are you passionate about your local museum? Do you have a hidden creative talent that's just bursting to be recognised? Then why not enter this fantastic competition? As part of their work with local museums, the Atelier East Young Curators' Forum are putting together a booklet of creative art and writing to celebrate museums across the East of England, and we'd like to hear from you. We need your short stories, poems and drawings inspired by your local museum. This is a great opportunity to see your work in print, and there are so many amazing objects to spark your imagination! You could write a poem about the mummified rat in the Whittlesey museum, tell the story about the 'Spong Man' at the Norwich Castle Museum, or paint a picture of old-fashioned computers on display at the Framlingham Museum in Suffolk. All the winning entries will be published in a special limited edition booklet, and the competition is open to artists and writers of all ages! So, whether you're a budding Piccaso, or an amateur JK Rowling, we'd love to hear from you! This project has been made possible with the support of Cambridgeshire-based arts organisation Atelier East and funding from the charity, Young Lives. LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Eastrea Village Hall Celebrates Royal Opening

Photographs Chris Brudenell Fenland welcomed a new feature on the landscape. One of the most spacious village halls ever built in East Anglia was opened on the 17th July. Built with the latest in technology, this new community facility - The Eastrea Centre - is fully digitalized with computer cables built into the walls. The hall currently boasts a large performance space measuring 22 m long and 14 m wide, a cafe and foyer area, a meeting and exhibition room with windows on three sides, changing rooms and washrooms. Designed for sport, clubs, plays and concerts, the Eastrea Centre has been built to last for centuries and is well insulated against the weather. Outside it has a grassed area and an extensive wooden terrace. Grants officer Mrs Noreen Wood said: "Eastrea Village Hall Trust have been able to secure funding from a range of sources, including £250,000 from Rose Homes, our developement partners; land worth £185,000 from Mr David

Garner, the landowner; £50,000 from the Community Fund at Fenland District Council, £30,000 from the landfill agency WREN, and £20,000 from the AmeyCespa Trust." Administrative work has been provided voluntarily and totals more than £250,000 over the past 20 years. The hall was opened last month by HRH The Duke of Gloucester, followed by a lunch. This is the first visit to Eastrea by a member of the Royal Family. Author and scientist Brian J Ford, who has chaired the Trust for over 20 years, said: "Our building should last for 1,000 years at least - even if the roof may need attention in the next century! - so it is a fitting legacy for Eastrea to offer to Fenland."

Stars of the lunch were the contractors, from electricians and bricklayers to carpenters and plasterers. The Trust says it regards these people as colleagues, as all have worked beyond the call of duty to make the hall reality. Plans are now under way for a gala black-tie dinner later in the year. The hall will be a great asset to the local area, providing a great place for all varieties of groups to meet. The beautifully tall ceiling would lend itself to a wedding reception, whilst the practical levels and ample parking means that mums and babies, and groups with disabilities, would find the hall a perfect meeting place. Well done to all involved, especially Brian J Ford, who Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure I am safe to say, is a very well respected, extremely dedicated man, who helped push forward this project and whom Eastrea and the surrounding area, owes a great deal to.

An Egg-cellent Result

Last month, seven-year-old Elliott Hurrell from Whittlesey, was declared the winner of the World Egg Target Throwing Championship 2013. The event was held at Swaton, Lincolnshire on Sunday 30th July 2013, and Elliott won having amassed six points from his three throws, two of which were top point scores. Elliott beat competitors from as far away as Ireland, Holland, Germany and Japan. The organised sport of Egg Throwing is thought to date back to at least 1322 when the newly appointed Abbot took possession of the Parish of Swaton by royal decree. It is said that he was the only person to own chickens and ensured the attendance at church of his peasant by providing them alms of one egg for each attendee. From these humble beginnings began the sport of egg throwing, and it has been played ever since in the village. The World Egg Throwing Federation was set up in 2004 in order to regulate the sport, and it is now joined by local and national groups. Its aims and policies have been adopted by many as the sport continues to grow in popularity and in doing so the Federation raises thousands of pounds for

The Federation is totally a non profit organisation, funded by its organising committee and hosts events all around the globe. This year, they are bringing back the Irish Open, Dutch Open, Australian Open, Scottish Russian Egg Roulette Championships, British open and many more.

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Community Friends of Navigators are New Road coming to Whittlesey School Community Navigators are local volunteers Summer who help older and vulnerable people find their way to activities or services which they Fete 2013 would enjoy or find useful. Your local Community Navigator will be here to help at Whittlesey library from 9.30 on Wednesday and Friday mornings. Local charity Care Network Cambridgeshire is pleased to have received funding to deliver a 3 year Community Navigator Project. The project aims to help older people find their way to activities and services such as:

• Joining a local friendship club, lunch or activity group • Modifying their home or get mobility aids • Obtaining a financial health check to maximise income • Getting help at home to support them through an illness or with one off tasks • Accessing a community car scheme for a lift to activities and appointments Making the most of local activities and services is a good way to keep fit, active and independent, but not everyone knows what is available. The Care Network Community Navigator Project is supported by Cambridgeshire County Council and will point the way to local community activities and also statutory and voluntary organisations. The service is free and there is no need to make an appointment. We have already supported people with housing and benefit problems as well as transport problems. We are still looking to find new Community Navigators. If you live in Whittlesey , Benwick, Turves, Coates or Eastrea your village needs you!

We would like to thank everyone that attended our school fete held on Saturday 15 June and enjoyed the selection of chance your luck games, refreshments and entertainment or maybe entered their dog in the dog show held by Five Jays. A very good afternoon was had by all and we raised an impressive £860.32 One visitor on the day made the following comment: “I would just like to say that we thoroughly enjoyed our time at your summer fete. Bought some nice plants, had a go on various stalls, bought yummy cakes etc. You have a lovely school and it was nice to see the garden patch and other projects, also that you have a lovely grassed area for the children to play on. ADave word from Mason At long last the English summer has blossomed and we have been blessed with enough warm sunshine to get out and about to enjoy life to the full with all that our lovely town of Whittlesey has to offer. The “Circuit of the Fens” cycle ride proved to be an overwhelming success and a debriefing has taken place to ensure that a similar event comes back to Whittlesey next year when Cambridgeshire will be part of the world famous Tour De France. The two cycle races this year, amateur and professional, were all about testing out the course and the racing conditions generally, by and large everyone was happy with the outcome with minor adjustments to be made to prevailing traffic conditions. Next year we hope that local businesses will be more involved and to that end the Whittlesey Town Council is already liaising with the local traders to enable a greater commercial presence to be made with increased advance publicity to put Whittlesey on the map. My thanks to the race organisers and all those involved in a very successful event and in particular to our own Cllr. Gary Swan, a keen cyclist with the St Ives club who worked tirelessley to make the event a success. With our Straw Bear Festival in January, a Cycling Festival in June, the ever popular Whittlesey Festival in September and our Christmas Extravaganza in December we are truly a festival town with hopefully something for everyone. Another successful event, although the results will not be known until September 10, has been the” Whittlesey in Bloom” which is part of the “Anglia in Bloom” competition. The judges were very impressed not only with the quality of the exhibits but the community spirit of Whittlesey which they described as extraordinary. Well done to the schools, allotment holders, Street Pride and the individuals who worked many hours planting flower beds, weeding and hanging baskets in the town centre to make our town so attractive to visitors. Some of the credit for “Whittlesey in Bloom” must go to Cllr. Kay Mayor who has driven this project along since its inception last year but Kay has also been busy on other fronts most notable of which has been the public consultations to improve our facilities at the Whittlesea Railway Station. After monitoring two consultation days at Grosvenor House Kay could have been found from 6am onwards at the railway station canvassing commuters on their views and requirements. All comments have been collated and will be studied in detail to produce a definitive plan to improve our local rail facilities in due course. In the meantime my thanks to all those who participated in coming forward with valuable information. Speaking of transport, I know many of you out there are critical of the local bus service to and from Peterborough in particular and at Whittlesey Town Council we are fully aware of the impact this has on

residents travelling to and from work as well as for social needs. To this end Stagecoach were invited to a recent Whittlesey Town Council meeting along with a representative from Cambridgeshire County Council responsible for funding. Concerns discussed included timetables, day riders, packed peak hour buses, routes and a possible moving of the Whittlesey Town centre embarking point to Grosvenor Road to eventually free up the Buttercross for al fresco catering . Whilst all these points were raised with vigour by your town council representatives the responses were not entirely positive, citing lack of evidence of public interest - and this is where you all come in. Anyone who has a constructive comment to make on local transport I would like to hear from, either personally, by mail at Grosvenor House or placing your comments on the social websites such as “Shape Your Place” or “Streetlife” This is your opportunity to make the voice of Whittlesey heard, don’t let it pass by!. Summer fetes are in full swing with Ann and I officially attending both Park Lane and Alderman Jacob fetes and I trust that many of you accepted the open invitation to view Sir Harry Smith Community College and the fantastic refurbishment work that has been carried out there. Let us be proud of our schools and give a vote of thanks to the staff, parents and volunteers who work so hard to ensure the future prosperity of our town through the next generation of adult citizens. A final word of praise to our local police service which has improved beyond all recognition since the arrival earlier in the year of Sgt. Paul Harris. Many of you will be aware of an increased presence on our streets of foot patrols and will have noticed police vehicles parked at strategic parts of the town instead of being constantly seen outside the police station as in the past. This is a return in part to old fashioned policing, speaking with members of the public, shopkeepers and tradesmen to restore confidence that their interests are being protected. As a result arrests for criminal activity and traffic infringements are on the increase as well as the resulting enquiries. This is excellent news for the town and our congratulations go out not only to Paul but to his hardworking team of officers.

ollowing on from last month’s article, pictured below is some of our dedicated group on our official re-launch of the Station Road Gateway (by the industrial estate) ‘Whittlesea Wayfarer II’. Installing or replacing our Gateway projects takes quite of lot of time, organising and logistical help. I mentioned last month several of our group who have given time and effort to this project. We are a group, with lots of local business support, who have made Whittlesey into a slightly greener and safer place to live, work and play. We have been in full swing since the weather has improved and have now done more than 20 events clearing and tidying up, so far this year we have removed over 2,200 Kgs of rubbish and litter, and our volunteers have contributed well

over 500 hours of time carrying out our core remit. We attend fetes, village shows and any other events which we can help and support. Naturally we try and carry out a Litterpick during and after the event and we make no charges whatso-ever for our attendance. If you have an event, which you think we might be able to support, then please get in touch, details below. Of course it is not all work for us StreetPriders, we like a bit of time out as well. Our annual Street Pride BBQ is being held on Saturday 10th August in Coates, all members, past, present or future are very welcome to attend. I would like to say Thank You to the community for a very warm welcome. I have been so pleased to have such a positive response. Being fairly new here I have tried to get out and about on footpatrol meeting communities, schools and businesses. Its amazed me at the depth of talent and services that Whittlesey offers not on a local level but nationally and internationally. As the warmer weather has arrived it has highlighted to me that as a communityy we need to be vigilant. There are people out there that pray, for that sat nav to be on display, that bathroom window to be open or clear signs that people are on holiday.. Please do remember secure your homes and narrow the oppurtunity for these people to come into our lives unwelcomed!! As team we have had some fantastic results people have been arrested for burglary, and robberies with property being recovered. Our summer drink drive campaign has also began and we have caught persons driving that are well over the limit. Parking and speeding are prioirites also tickets are issued and fines are being paid but still people continue to flout the law as soon as officers have left the areas. We willcontinue to hit hotspot areas and do all we can. The recent Cycling Event “ Circuit of the fens” went off well and once again highlighted the Fenland area in a positive light. With summer holidays approaching I am working with schools and other agencies to see how we can intergrate better with young people creating some positive outcomes. We have been to most of the schools fetes and again got a really nice reception. I hope to meet more people soon and am more than happy to listen to anyone who has issues that bring them concern. For those who follow Twitter, I do tweet from it about recent incidents and good news stories so may be worth a follow…. My best wishes

Bridge over Smiths Leam at The Dog-in-a-Doublet

hile we are awaiting the long promised bridge over the railway at King’s Dyke, the Governors of the Town Revenues apparently had no such delay in 1787 when they wanted to put a bridge over the River Nene. A meeting was held in the Workhouse in Old Tavern Street (Broad Street) between the Governors and principal inhabitants of the Town. At this meeting it was decided to inform the Committee of the Bedford Corporation that they were willing to lay down a floating bridge over Smith’s Leam, the hand dug section of the present river Nene, at the Dog-in-aDoublet where there was, at present a ford. The Governors would have complete control of the bridge and collect the tolls. They would do this for a period of three years after which the responsibility would devolve to the North Level Commissioners. If this did not happen, then the bridge would be taken away and the ford restored. There was evidently a ‘large machine’ in Robert Ellington’s boatyard at Stanground, probably of timber construction. An agreement was reached on the price and the bridge was floated into position. The river was deepened to make it convenient for the floating bridge to give way to boats navigating the river. Two men and boats were provided to ferry people and animals across the wash when it was flooded. These men were in addition to those appointed to manage the bridge and collect tolls. Those that did not live in the Town usually paid double the toll paid by the inhabitants. Money received from the tolls was used to offset the initial cost of the bridge, maintaining it and paying the toll collectors and ferrymen. Any surplus money was to be used to improve the bridge over Morton’s Leam and the road leading to it from the Hare and Hounds public House, (later the Morton’s Fork) to the new bridge. It is not recorded what the bridge actually cost, but in 1793 some £82.00 had been expended on it. This proved, if nothing else that the enterprise was a success, having well exceeded the three years probationary period stipulated by the Governors. In April 1793, the Governors were informed (not quite sure by whom) that a permanent bridge would be constructed over the river near the

Dog-in-a-Doublet, funded by public subscription. The Governors promptly pledged £100 towards the cost. The instigators were probably the North Level Commissioners as in 1795 the Governors paid them £20 towards repairs to the New bridge, which would seem to have already been built by them.

The floating bridge was now surplus to requirement, but as to it’s fate, no one knows. The Governors sold the two ferry boats complete with spars and sails at a public auction which ended the Governors involvement in the floating bridge project. There have, of course, been a succession of bridges over the Nene at this point, over the years, the latest being at the cost of over one and a half million pounds. St Andrew’s and St Mary’s churchyards are closed and not available for burials. St Andrew’s, however, does have the provision for interment of cremated remains at the discretion of the Vicar and PCC. St Thomas’ and Holy Trinity’s Churchyards are open and available for burials and interments. Permission for use is given according to the rules of the Church and governed by where you live – please discuss this with Nigel if you have any concerns. We would also like to take this opportunity to advise you about the extent of the churchyard at St Mary’s. It consists of all the land within the walls next to the Church (not just within the metal railings) and the detached churchyard across Station Road (i.e. the Straw Bear Garden). Finally we ask you to respect the way you use our churchyards whether they are open or closed. Right from the start of the new coarse fishing season Whittlesey youngsters have been enjoying some first class tuition in the regular Tuesday evening sessions on Whittlesey Dyke at the back of the warehouses. Hats off to all those that have given up their time to help out at these matches. Over the past few years there has been a noticeable decline in youngsters entering our sport as other activities seem to have taken precedence. There are so many waters full of fish just waiting to be caught right on our doorstep and with the school holidays in full swing it’s just the right time to get out and give it a go. Stillwaters have been in tip top form of late and now that they have finished spawning we can expect some quality time at the waters edge. Decoy Lakes is, as always producing excellent sport with baits such as sweetcorn, luncheon meat and pellet all catching fish. If you love fishing surface baits then head for Kingsland Fishery, one of our best waters in the area for catching fish on bread flake. It’s much the same at Railway Lakes, although bottom baits such as spice flavoured

boilies have taken some very impressive catches. Don’t forget Northey Park Fishery, a very pleasant fishery, lots of lakes with plenty of choice for the pleasure angler. Finally a relatively new fishery has emerged and with several lakes already up and running and quite a few more to come, it’s attracting lots of anglers. It’s called Float Fish Farm Fishery and having already seen and indeed taken some cracking nets of fish it has already made its mark on the local angling scene.

A word from

Whittlesey Christian Church Where Does The Term ‘Christian’ Come From?

Words have always fascinated me, sometimes we use them without understanding their actual meaning. One typical example is ‘blimey’ which is simply a shortened version of ‘blind me’ One of our congregation recently asked me to explain the origins and meaning of the term ‘Christian’. I explained how it was first used by the inhabitants of the ancient city of Antioch as they sought to mock the early followers of Christ, it certainly wasn’t meant in any praise worthy sense. However it could easily be seen as a sort of backhanded compliment, literally translated the Greek word they used means – ‘a person in whom Christ dwells and lives Himself out’ It obviously appeared to the people of Antioch that the same teachings and lifestyle seen in Jesus Christ before He was crucified was now being replicated in the lives of His followers. The person I was speaking with commented - ‘wow, that’s some challenge to us who call ourselves Christian’ Church history actually shows that when the Christian message first influenced our nation it brought about changes in people’s lifestyle and the nations laws. It became associated with those who endeavoured to live by the principles taught in the Bible. Unfortunately, the passage of time has seen rituals becoming a substitute for a life-changing encounter with Christ, producing a lowering of the standards you would expect from those professing to be Christians, and churches losing credibility and relevance in the eyes of society.

Sadly the term ‘Christian’ is now loosely used to describe anyone who goes to church, has some modicum of belief in God, or has undergone certain religious rituals. The most bizarre thing I heard was when being quizzed by a rather sophisticated gentleman about my relationship with God. A word from Cllr Martin Curtis

This month will see the publication of an initial report into Kings Dyke crossing. The report does two things; firstly it looks at some possible options for how the crossing will be delivered, and secondly it does some analysis of the delays and levels of traffic using it. It shows that the physical construction of a bridge looks possible, but also highlights that the economic benefits of building the crossing are rated high to very high. What is interesting about the analysis is that it is based on the current level of rail traffic, whilst acknowledging the inevitable increase in rail traffic that is coming - which says to me that overall the benefits are rated as at least very high. The report does nothing but give further evidence for the need for the crossing, but by focusing on economics as part of the case it starts to put some strong facts behind the case.

Whilst I am pretty sure that most Whittlesey residents won’t learn anything from the positive conclusions of the report, pulling together the data underlying those conclusions has ben important and will help as the process of delivering our bridge moves forwards. I want to finish by commenting on the events I have seen in the Town Centre over the last couple of months, I saw the cycle race and the auctions event and both were well attended and made for a great atmosphere in Town. 1 tbsp oil or butter; 1 large onion, finely chopped; 1kg roughly minced chuck steak (or any non-lean mince); 100ml stout; 2 tbsp brown breadcrumbs; 2 tsp chopped herbs (parsley or thyme work well); 1 tsp salt; Black pepper Note. I have chosen a cut of non lean meat, as I feel there is no place for lean or ground meat in a burger, Lean meat causes the burger to be dry and crumbly. cuts such as Chuck, Brisket or even short rib are great for retaining moisture and ﬂavour.

1. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a low heat, and cook the onion until soft and slightly browned. Leave to cool. 2. Spread the beef out and sprinkle over the onion. Add the stout, breadcrumbs, herbs and seasoning and mix together with a fork, being careful not to overwork it. 3. Divide the meat into 12 ﬂattish burgers, putting a dimple in the centre of each. Cover and refrigerate for an hour. 4. Cook the burgers on a medium to hot barbecue or griddle pan: leave them undisturbed for the first 3 minutes so they build up a good seal on the bottom, then carefully turn them over, adding a slice of cheese on top if desired. ow lawns lightly to avoid too much drying out and rake out old grass. On very hot and sunny days watering should be carried out during the evening to prevent scorching. Also, if you need to feed your lawn do it in the evening when it is cool and water any treatment in well.

Save yourself time and money by tackling a few jobs while it’s still warm and dry. Check your shed roof for leaks and give wooden surfaces such as fences and front doors a once over.

Keep up with the dead-heading. This is vital to prevent your blooms from running to seed. Dispose of the dead-heads in the compost bin or the garden recycling rather than leaving them on the ground where they might encourage or spread disease.

Clean bird tables, feeders and baths thoroughly to help attract wildlife. It might also be an idea to top up the garden pond, if it has been hot some of the water will have been lost to evaporation.

Pruning now will save you going out when the winter weather starts to draw in as plants won’t grow too much at this time of year before winter. Pruning plants and trees is a good way to keep them shapely and to encourage new growth. Plant labels should give you some general information about when and how much to prune specific plants however, pruning at the wrong time of year needn’t be a disaster and won’t hurt the plant in the long run unless you prune very late in the season and encourage new tender growth that will be killed off by winter weather.

August - Why we Breath

By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Mistry (Registered Osteopaths) We all understand breathing involves taking in oxygen, but is that its only role? Interestingly the answer is no, intrigued? Read onâ&#x20AC;Ś Removing carbon dioxide

Our breathing rate is determined by our need to remove carbon dioxide from our bodies not our need for oxygen. Our blood always contains excess oxygen such that we only use a small proportion during our daily activities. However the accumulation of waste gases produced by our cells (e.g. carbon dioxide) is something we can not tolerate as it makes our blood more acidic. Breathing removes carbon dioxide thus our breathing rate is dependent on how much we need to remove.

Returning blood back to our hearts

Interestingly breathing is the second most important reason (the ďŹ rst is obviously the heart) for our blood flow. If it was not for breathing our blood would form pools in our legs! The heart pushes the blood around the body, whilst breathing sucks the blood back up. Breathing achieves this by creating pressure differentials in the body, in a similar fashion to how we suck fluid up through a straw.

Strengthening heart beats

The heart is securely fastened within the ribcage via various attachments to the surrounding skeletal and muscular structures. One of these structures is the diaphragm. When the diaphragm moves (i.e. descends during breathing) it pulls the bottom part of the heart with it. Therefore the chambers of the heart get stretched which makes the contraction stronger.

Mobilising our organs

Directly beneath our diaphragm are our abdominal organs (e.g. stomach, liver, etc). Therefore if our diaphragm descends and rises at a set frequency (i.e. breathing) it creates a rhythmical wave which travels through our organs. This motion maintains our organs mobility and hence health.

Emotion

Behavioural breathing is how our breathing responds to changes in our emotions, e.g. when we are nervous, angry, etc. The reverse is also true, i.e. breathing can alter our emotions. A good example is when parents instruct their upset children to take deep breaths in an attempt to calm them down. It is this link between breathing and emotion which the parents are using.

OBLIVION

Oblivion, based on a comic book written in 2005 which was never published, is set in the future following an alien attack on Earth. The surviving members of humanity have been taken to a new home, but Jack (Tom Cruise) and his wife Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) stayed behind to protect machinery harvesting the planet’s resources. However Jack quickly starts to suspect that there is something amiss with their mission. The plot is full of imagination, in the first few minutes the audience discovers that Earth was attacked by aliens in the late 21st century and its moon smashed to space rubble, causing earthquakes and floods that obliterated the population, followed by nuclear war. Oblivion isn’t just about alien warfare, director Joseph Kosinski takes time to explore this new world, and the art direction is simply beautiful. It’s realistic, which owes a great deal to the fact that parts of it are shot on actual locations such as Iceland. With great performances from Olga Kurylenko (who is a mysterious woman Jack sees in his dreams) and Morgan Freeman, Oblivion will take you on a journey full of twists and surprises. On one level, a strong sci-fi riddle boldly staged, and on another it’s a story of a man struggling with his place in the world. This is definitely one to watch this month.

Grand Opening Parade for Whittlesey Festival C ome and see the Grand Opening Parade at the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday 15 September starting at 10.30am from the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street (opposite Neville’s opticians). We invite you to join us in celebrating the opening of the Festival by coming to watch the Parade as it winds its way along Broad Street towards Market Street and onto the Market Square where the Festival will be officially opened by the Mayor of Whittlesey, Councillor David Mason. We would love you to come and line the streets en route of the Parade and you certainly won’t be disappointed as you see this colourful, musical spectacle. Marching bands, dancers, entertainers, community groups and many more who are taking part in the activities throughout the day will be in the procession. Why not come and show your support by cheering them on as the Parade passes by. This will be a fantastic start to an exciting family day out for everyone. There are numerous stalls and attractions including fairground rides, climbing wall, pony rides, puppet shows, dance, music and much more. The ever popular vintage vehicle display with over 120 cars and motorcycles will line the whole of Broad Street and Market Street where you can take a trip down Memory Lane. On this note we want to mention again that during the Festival visitors will be treated to a ‘World War Two Spit Fire’ flypast which is certainly something not to be missed.There is also the traditional Craft Fair held in partnership with Fen Craft Fairs at the Childers Club in Station Road. Here you’ll find a variety of hand-made crafts for sale and you can also see for yourself how many of these are actually made. Don’t forget to visit the Schools Art Exhibition at

the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street and you can enter your baby into The Beautiful Baby competition by popping along to the Ivy Leaf Club at 11.30 am. Whittlesey Widows Group In 1983 the late Mrs Olive Wright and a few friends started meeting once a month inviting speakers along, thus the Widows group was formed. LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Coates Village Show a blazing success and Citizen of the Year announced!

After a year’s break, the Coates Village Show took place on the 13th July, and was a great success raising around £450 for the church. And later in the day, a very surprised Villager was awarded the ‘Citizen of the Year’ award. The organisers of the Coates Village Show, disappointed at having to cancel last year’s show, were determined to make this year’s event a success. Many hours of hard work in promoting, planning and organising took place in the months preceding the show. Nearly 150 items were entered into the competition, and the judges remarked on the skill, patience and effort that had gone into preparing the wide range of items. Points were awarded and totals calculated to find the winning entrant in each class, and the overall winner for the day. At the end of the day, the category winners were announced and trophies and shields awarded. The overall Show winner for 2013 was a close competition, with last year’s winner coming a very close second. The overall Coates Village Show

winner for 2013 was Mr Peter Sennett. The last formality of the day was to announce the Coates Citizen of the Year 2013 – Mr Colin Dale. There were many nominations, and only one vote between first and second place. Some of the reasons people gave for voting for Mr Dale were “Such a kind and helpful person and a good friend to everyone”, “...does so much for the church and community”, “Always willing to help. I just phone him and he is here”, “a person who helps others with no expectations of reward” and “He is our village treasure”. Sponsored Charity Parachute Jump Next month Melissa Kenneley, who lives in Coates, is planning on taking a leap of faith for a sponsored charity parachute jump to raise funds for The Scaldgate Club. The Scaldgate Club is a social club for adults over the age of 19, with a learning disability living in the Whittlesey area, who meet weekly on a Thursday evening. As well as providing a fun social environment for the members, where they are given the opportunity to do arts and crafts, games, cooking, trips out and socialising with each other, it also serves as a respite for the members parent/carers.

In the last couple of years grant money has ceased to be available, and so they are reliant on donations and their own fundraising efforts. It costs approx £6,500 a year to run the club, and are in danger of facing closure next year. Step forward Melissa Kenneley, who is the God-daughter of Chairperson Pam Potts. Weather permitted, Melissa will take part in a tandem charity parachute jump on the 24th August at Chatteris airfield. Whittlesey JFC Sponsored Ride from Whittlesey to Sibson & Walk from Sibson to Whittlesey JFC

Local football club, Whittlesey JFC, recently organised a sponsored bike ride and walk to raise funds for its own self maintained ground off Stonald Road “The Field Of Dreams”. The event was organised by club groundsman Ady Barkess along with help from well known local charity organiser Russell Hart who has been involved in many cycling events for some time. Having invested in the region of £12,000 during this summer to repair and maintain the pitches, it was agreed by the club that we should do some sort of fundraising event to help with this. Currently catering for nearly 200 children, and with this number growing rapidly, funding is vital to help with keep our facilities up to scratch to cope with the demand The sponsored event started with a 6.30am meet on the Buttercross where 8 volunteer riders headed of out of town towards the Admiral Wells Pub at Holme. Given the nice weather, it was fair to say the wind and rain was not the most enjoyable experience, but the riders continued to their first stop at Sawtry. After chocolate bars & drinks were consumed, the next part of our ride took them towards Hamerton. Lutton & Elton were safely negotiated before the riders reached their 32 mile destination of Sibson. From here they took a walk along a grassy lane and into the back of the Sibson Inn, where they were met by 15 other volunteers from the club who joined the group for the 20 mile walk back to

On the long walk back, the exhausted members were met by around 100 children at the Key Theatre, who were all dressed in their team shirts from the club, along with parents, friends and relatives. The last of the walkers got back to the ground at around 6:20pm. Ady explained: “It was a very long day but hugely rewarding for all that took part. We had set ourselves a target of £4,000 but after some fantastic efforts from the teams and volunteers, we have been pledged in excess of £5,000 which is a brilliant amount that will help us to keep the club progressing. “THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL WHO TOOK PART AND TO ALL THOSE WHO SUPPORTED & SPONSORED.”

Junior Sessions take place on a Sunday mornings at The Ron Jacobs Playing Fields, Crowland Road, Thorney. They start at 10.30 a.m. and finish at 12 noon. All our coaches are CRB checked and RFU qualified. Mums and Dads are welcome to stay and watch. Tea, coffee, toasties and bacon sarnies are always available in our new purpose built premises.
