I remember fondly walking around Whittlesey last year, picking up some tasty cheese and pickles, and feeling very proud of how our community comes together to bring a fantastic day for old and young. Please note the festival has now been extended from 10am right through until 5pm. Sunday 15 September 10:00am – 5:00pm

Picture by Chris Brudenell In order to accommodate the huge number of displays and activities organisers of the Festival have extended the times for an earlier start and a later finish. We don’t want anyone to miss out on what promises to be a fun-filled day out for everyone so please do note the new times. On Sunday 15 September the parade will now assemble at 10am at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street . It will set off at the earlier time of 10.15am so make sure you get there in good time to line the streets to see this wonderful display as it makes its way along Broad Street and Market Street to the Square for the official opening. The Festival will then run throughout the day up to the new time of 5pm. With just days to go before the Festival excitement is already building as the Market

Square and surrounding streets and buildings will be buzzing with fun and activity. For those of you who have been following the regular Festival articles over the last few months, you will have already had a bit of an insight into some of the things you can do and see throughout the day but in case you haven’t or you’d like a quick reminder here’s a selection of some of the things you can expect to find listed below. Success on the Kilimanjaro Summit Kit and Andy Pearson managed to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro in the morning of 3rd July, 2013. This followed 5 days of slowly trekking up the mountain to get conditioned to the altitude. Our party ‘summitted’ just after sunrise on the 3rd July having begun the final ascent at about midnight. Only one of the group was unable to make it due to breathing problems.

and upwards for the last 6-7 hours on the night of the last push for the top. It is those last few hours that are the hardest but it is all worth it when you reach the sign to confirm you are at the very top of Africa.

You need to be fairly fit and follow all the advice from the Tanzanian guides who lead the trek (walk slowly, really slowly, even slower!! Drink lots of water, rest whenever possible) and have the determination to just keep plodding onwards

celebrate its first anniversary by playing a lunchtime (12.15pm) Concert at St. Mary`s Church for the Whittlesey Festival 15th September. The group have been fundraising to purchase new Music Stands and Banners for the ensemble and recently have received a generous contribution from Norwich & Peterborough Building Society, for which they are most grateful. Excellent results for Sir Harry Smith Pupils at Sir Harry Smith Community College had plenty of excuses to celebrate last month, with some excellent results for A level and Level 3. Jonathan Digby, the school Principal explained: “I am delighted with the results that the students have achieved this year. The overall pass rate this year is at ninety nine per cent and 80% achieved A*-C grades, which is an increase of 7% from last year. The percentage of students gaining A*-B grades has also increased to 52% from 43% in 2012. “The students have worked extremely hard to achieve this level of success and they deserve to feel very proud of their exam results. The results also reflect the hard work and dedication of the teachers and staff at Sir Harry Smith Community

College. “I would like to highlight Anoushka Adam, who gained 2As 2Bs, and is off to read Maths at Birmingham and James Dietz who scored A*, A, B, B and is going to study Engineering at Durham University. “Reece Gordon, Samuel Killingworth and Emily Savage also all did extremely well achieving A, A,B in their exams. “The feedback from the students so far has been extremely positive in terms of getting on the university courses that they wanted to.”

The below recipe will make 5 or 6 depending on how large you like them

Ingredients

• 375g of strong white flour • 6g table salt • I teaspoon of baking powder (we use an improver here but baking will suffice) • 12g butter • 15g white sugar • 18g fresh yeast • 175g water to mix • 6 g Sultanas • 6g cherries • 1 egg beaten

Sugar syrup to glaze

¼ pint of water to 15g sugar bring to the boil and stir until thick.

Instructions

Whittlesey Bun Last month you will recall that I asked for any information about the allsuive Whittlesey Bun, well thanks to a few readers, and Ian Mitcham, Head Baker of Dobbies Garden Centre, we now have the recipe.

Mix Flour, salt, baking powder, butter, sugar, yeast in bowl add enough water to make a dough. Place on a table and chop into rough pieces without separating them. Add the egg to the chopped mix on the table and continue to chop and turn till all the egg is absorbed. Mix in the fruit Cut into 5 or 6 pieces and allow proving in a warm area until double in size Bake in a medium oven 180 degrees or gas mark 5 for approximately 10 to 15 minutes or until lightly browned on top Glaze whilst hot with sugar syrup and sprinkle with sugar - then enjoy!!! ADave word from Mason No sooner have I penned an article for August but the deadline has loomed for September’s contribution which probably indicates two things - firstly, life is far more hectic in Whittlesey than I at first thought and secondly “time flies when you are enjoying yourself” I have certainly enjoyed my spell as Mayor since my appointment in May as it has given me the opportunity of visiting places of interest that I may not have seen otherwise but more importantly it has given me access to a wide circle of very interesting people to listen to and hopefully assist in whatever modest way that I can. Street lighting has been an emotive issue over the summer with the upgrading of lighting in our town under the direction of Cambridgeshire County Council and their contractors, Balfour Beatty and whilst I am not naïve enough to feel that I can please all the people all the time there have been notable successes where citizens of Whittlesey have approached me with their concerns and by concerted efforts we have been able to lobby our County Council and effect significant changes. Please continue to approach me with your concerns on any subject and whilst I cannot promise to solve every issue, if I feel the argument has merit, I will support the application all the way to the best of my ability. I keep in touch regularly with the local social websites such as “Shape your Place” and “Streetlife” and it saddens me when I read negative or frustrating comments directed at “the council” One of the burning issues of the moment of course is the supermarket saga and the rights and wrongs of Tesco and Sainsbury occupying a site in Eastrea Road. It would appear to the casual reader that very little progress is being made on this subject but this is basically an unfair criticism of your Whittlesey Town Council who by inference are dragging their heels. Cast your minds back to the the public meetings at the Manor Leisure Centre or the meeting sponsored at the Ivy Leaf Club by the Cambs Times and you will recall your local councillors standing up to be counted on your behalf. Even in the past month I have written personal letters to the leader of the Fenland District Council, Alan Melton, the Corporate Director, Alan Pain, Chief Planning Officer, Graham Nourse and Ian Hunt, the FDC Solicitor seeking clarification on outstanding points and requesting reports on progress. Martin Curtis, a WTC councillor who effectively is “persona non grata” at Fenland for expressing his views in favour of Whittlesey continues to lobby Fenland District Council over similar issues as do other Whittlesey councillors all of whom I am proud to serve alongside. Please be assured that everything within our power is being done to see that right is done and that the wishes of our electorate are fully represented by your Town Council.

Another topic that has caused diverse opinion in the community has been the building and subsequent opening of the Eastrea Community Hall recently by HRH Duke of Gloucester, an occasion at which Ann and I were both proud and humbled to be invited as honoured guests. The occasion has been fully reported in the August issue of this magazine and also in the local press extensively and was indeed a spectacular success. As Mayor I have a responsibility not only for the town of Whittlesey but also for all the surrounding villages, a task that I do not take lightly as someone who had the great pleasure of living in Coates for ten years before moving to Whittlesey 29 years ago. My children enjoyed village life to the full in their formative years, attending the local primary school, church and being involved to high levels in local cubs, scouts and brownies and as a family unit we fully appreciated the closeness of village life, my wife Ann for many years being the President of Coates Women’s Institute and I myself a regular player and member of Coates Cricket Club. Every village should have a focal point or identity and a community centre is essential to that cause and I would personally like to congratulate Professor Brian Ford and the committee of the Eastrea Community Centre for overcoming obstacles and setbacks to realise their dream. It is to be hoped that the future is bright not only for the community of Eastrea but for all our villages who make up the unique fabric of what we know as Fenland. Further meetings of the organisers of the recent “Circuit of the Fens”, members of the public and local businesses have taken place to lay down plans for a similar race next summer which we are assured could become a permanent fixture as one of an exclusive set of cycle races in this country. Whittlesey Town Council will be fully supporting this initiative which will hopefully promote our town further as the “Jewel of the Fens” In the meantime we have another wonderful event for us all to enjoy in Whittlesey and that is the Whittlesey Festival to be held on Sunday 15 September and I hope to meet and chat with as many of you as possible on the day.

Two More Projects for Street Pride…

e are very pleased and excited to announce one of our next major projects which will come to Whittlesea... Permission has been granted from Cambridgeshire Highways and funding from the Glassmoor Bank Wind Turbine community fund, to build and place a disabled friendly/ environmental sustainable picnic bench table at the Ramsey Road layby. Along with this, we also hope to place a cycle rack and litter bin. Bernie Esson-Gray, our Vice Chairman, put together a very good business plan for this project. Our team work has paid dividends. The bench itself is made from 100% recycled materials (2,000 Plastic Bottles), disabled and wheelchair accessible, low maintenance and can I say vandal resistant, rot proof, heavy duty and animal and insect resistant. Now that permission and funding have been obtained, we will plan the next stages of the groundwork to be put in place. We hope this will be done this autumn with the erection of the

Whittlesey Women's Institute has had a busy summer with our annual Social Evening in June which had a Seaside theme and was enjoyed by the members. July's meeting was a talk on "Theatrical Makeup" by Chris Clark. It was very entertaining, with some of the members being made up as a skull, a geisha girl and a cat from the show "Cats".

This year we hope to plant in excess of 20,000 Daffodils along with an increase to 5,000 each (crocus and snowdrops – these will go in our Plough Road site). If you can help Whittlesea Street Pride to achieve this ambitious plan then please do get in contact – every little helps us. Our core Litter picking activities are going well, with us tidying the bus stop opposite Funthams Lane and our usual six weekly cycle of clearing and tidying up along Peterborough Road and Kings Delph. We have removed from this one area alone well in excess of 6,000 Kgs (about 6+ tons) of rubbish, litter and fly tipped material. We are very grateful to Dennis and Margaret Harris (Here Comes Harris) for sponsoring Whittlesea Street Pride at Kings Delph for the fifth consecutive year. She has written many books about some of the interesting women who lived in the Fens hundreds of years ago and even of women branded as witches in the 20th century. Community Fund Applications for funding for charitable projects are invited by constituted groups (not individuals) based in a 5 mile radius of the Burnthouse Farm Wind Farm (which is located outside Turves, Cambridgeshire). Charitable projects will be supported if they demonstrably benefit a material proportion of the local community by supporting their use and enjoyment of the local area and/or contributing to a positive community spirit. Grants will be offered in the range of £250 to £6,000 from the £24,000 annual funding that REG Windpower, the wind farm developer, are contributing to the community benefit fund each year. Applications are invited throughout the year but decisions will only be made at two fund panel meetings scheduled to take place in the Spring and late Autumn. Whittlesey Allotment and Gardeners Society annual show Whittlesey Allotment and Gardeners Society are holding their 4th Annual Show on 21st September at St John’s Ambulance Hall, Plough Road, Whittlesey. There are classes for vegetables, fruit, baking, preserving (jams, pickles etc) and alcohol (beer, wine, liqueur). There are also junior classes such as best plate of cupcakes, best scarecrow, biggest pumpkin which are for children under 16 – although under 16s can also enter the adult classes. This is a fun, family show – with the emphasis on fun - and entries are welcomed from anyone who lives within the Whittlesey Town Council area. We only ask that your entry is grown, made or produced by the entrant. “Some” parental assistance is allowed for the juniors! Entries cost £1 for the first one then 50p for any further items. Entry to any class by a junior is free. Entries are accepted on the day from 8am to 11am and then the hall will be closed for judging to take place from 11.30am – 1.30pm. Outside the hall (weather permitting of course!) we will be having a table top sale and homemade cake stall from 11.45am. Refreshments will be available and there is also a raffle. The Whittlesey Workhouse

n my last article, I mentioned the Workhouse in Broad Street and a number of people have asked ‘where was it?” It was situated on the South side of the street on the site now occupied by the Opticians, The Lighting shop and the Estate Agents. In 1725 it was mentioned in a publication as a Parish Workhouse and in 1776 this publication mentions an operating Workhouse with accommodation for up to 90 inmates. Parishes ran them on a voluntary basis with minimal organisation. The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act required Parishes to form into Unions to build a system of Workhouses and do away with Poor Relief. Whittlesey applied to join the Unions in Peterborough and Doddington, but were refused admission to either – we must have been a bad risk – so the Town had to build its own, one of the few in the Country that had to do so. The Whittlesey Workhouse was started in 1875 on a site in Eastrea Road now occupied by the Sir Harry Smith Community College. It was designed by Fredrick Peck, to a standard layout approved by the Home Office. It compromised a massive three storey front block with central corridors running the whole length with rooms off to the front and rear. The Master and Matron lived centrally with men and women (even married couples) segregated on either side, only meeting at meal times. Parents had access to their children for one hour each day. The dining room, kitchen and laundry extended to the rear of this block with the two storey infirmary and isolation hospital as separate buildings beyond. There was a lodge for the Porter at the front of the site, behind which were the vagrants quarters. The men were employed tending the gardens providing fresh fruit and vegetables and the women were put to work in the laundry and the making and mending of clothes. There was a standard uniform of reefer type jackets and corduroy trousers for the men and blue dresses and capos for the women. They attended the Sunday morning service at St. Mary’s church, but even here the sexes were still separated. The vagrants who travelled from Workhouse to Workhouse pushing handcarts or prams, loaded with their worldly goods, were given overnight accommodation, but before leaving had to perform menial tasks such as chopping wood or breaking stones. The Whittlesey Gas & Coke Co. applied to the Improvement Commissioners to lay a gas main from their works in Delph to Eastrea Road, quite a considerable undertaking, but it meant that lighting the building with gas flares became a reality. It was not until 1921, however, that a boiler room was built, providing heating to the dining room and hot water to a communal bathroom. Bucket lavatories near

the staircases had to be emptied each morning, including the Master’s. The 1861 Census records that the Master was Henry Masters and his wife Elizabeth was Matron and they had two middle aged servants. There were 79 inmates to look after, the oldest, Elizabeth Ashling, was 91 and the youngest was 2 year old John Chance. Inmates could voluntarily remove themselves from the Workhouse, but quite a number of entries in the discharge book under the heading “reason for leaving” simply said “dead”. Those that died were given a paupers funeral with tin plate furniture on cheap wooden coffins, and bearers carried them from the Workhouse to the Cemetery. Life in the Workhouse was hard in the beginning but improved as the years went on. By 1930 the Board of Guardians and the Poor Law Institution, as the Workhouse was titled on Ordnance Survey Sheets at the time, disappeared. The building was last used by Coates School whilst their building was being renovated. The workhouse was demolished just before the commencement of the Second World War. The gardens were tended by school children, at this time their tools being kept in the still standing Porter’s Lodge together with all the road signs which had been removed to confuse the enemy should they arrive on our shores.

A word from Revd Nigel and Revd Gill Each of our parish churches has two churchwardens. They are elected annually to serve as ofďŹ cers of the Bishop and representatives of the people. Churchwardens have a duty to represent the people and co-operate with the Vicar. They have important legal duties and equally important spiritual, pastoral and mission responsibilities. These make them foremost among the people of the church. They set an example in ministry, in commitment to regular worship and in seeking to witness to their Lord and God.

They are expected to lead the parishioners by setting a good example and encouraging unity and peace. They have a particular duty to maintain order and peace in the church and churchyard at all times, and especially during services. They are legally responsible with the Vicar for all the property and movable goods belonging to a parish church. They have a duty to keep an up to date record of the property and an inventory of items within the church and to produce these lists for inspection in case of a visitation by the Archdeacon or his/her representative. When there is no Vicar, due to a vacancy, the churchwardens ensure that a minimum number of church services continue to be held in the parish, and in particular that the Eucharist continues to be celebrated every Sunday and on every Principal Feast. To be elected to the office of churchwardens a

person must be: 1. baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity, i.e. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 2. at least 21 years old. 3. on the electoral role of the parish. 4. someone who receives Holy Communion on a regular basis. They serve for a period of one year and then may stand for election again. Many churchwardens hold office for a number of years. This is important as they gain knowledge and experience with which to support the people and clergy in their roles. With the school holidays just about behind us now some of anglings leading administrators have been reviewing the details from a report that points to a dramatic drop in youngsters taking up the sport of angling. Our local club Whittlesey AA have worked tirelessly over the years trying to encourage youngsters, along with other clubs in the area, but it would seem to be a losing battle right now. Hopefully that will change and if clubs continue to run events and instruction days then eventually the tide will turn. Sport on our local waters has been very good indeed, tench fishing on Glassmoor Bank has been as good as many can remember for several seasons, while on the Twenty Foot Drain roach fishing on seed baits is at its best right now. Hopefully the warm weather will continue and we can continue to enjoy good fishing on the Bower

and the Whittlesey Dyke downstream of Ashline sluice. Stillwaters have been in fine form for several weeks now, some stunning weights have been taken in matches at Decoy Lakes, Railway Lakes and Kingsland have also produced top quality action. Northey Park is well worth a visit right now and its good to see anglers returning to East Delph Fishery, I have a feeling this could once again become a top class venue for both match and pleasure anglers. Why not give Float Fish Farm Fishery a try, great for pleasure anglers as right now there are not that many matches taking place and there is a good selection of lakes to try. It will not be long before the pike anglers are looking to the fen drains for their sport, usually its the first frost of the year thats the signal to get out the spinning gear or take a chance on a dead bait session, but for now long may the sun shine so we can enjoy the top quality sport on offer on the waters around Whittlesey.

Whittlesey Christian Church The Bible Is Really A Fantastic Book

In my position I suppose people would expect me to say that, but the truth is I truly mean it. Now if you had said something like this to me as an angry young man in his late teens many years ago, I would have said you were mad. My parents became deeply committed Christians after my father came to faith in Christ from a life of drink and gambling, leaving his family to make do with whatever was left By the time I was born, the seventh of eight children, the church they attended had become irrelevant. The same traditions were repeated week after week and the minster would say something for 15 minutes (thankfully no longer) which had very little bearing on the real world I lived in. I ultimately walked away from it vowing never to return to such a pointless, uninspiring way of life. But something happened which changed all that, I encountered God in a remarkable way, and began discovering that the Bible had some incredible advice on most of the issues I was facing. I could hardly believe it. Little wonder hardly anyone attended my previous church, the evidence of irrelevance is usually dwindling congregations. During counselling I often have course to use a particular phrase which fits their situation perfectly, people are usually amazed to discover that it was actually from the Bible. Such things as the reduction in people dying after operations or hospital treatment had its beginning in the Bible

when someone discovered the advice God gave to ‘wash your hands up to the elbows,’ resulting in the practice of lifting the hands after washing to allow the water to drip off the elbow. Even our sanitation system also owes its development to God instructing the people to ‘take their human waste out of the city, dig a hole and bury it.’ Even more amazing is that surrounding the ancient city of Jerusalem were twelve gates, one of these was set aside specifically for this purpose, it was called ‘the dung gate’ - and would you believe what was next to it - ‘the water gate’ which is exactly what we were taught from childhood, ‘wash your hands after going to the toilet’ Let us help you discover more of the exciting and relevant truths found in the Bible. A word from Cllr Martin Curtis

I am going to talk about Chatteris this month. I hope you will forgive me for that! It does all boil down to Whittlesey in the end. Last month I had the pleasure of attending the opening of the Chatteris Community Hub in my capacity as Leader of Cambridgeshire County Council. It is the first of many similar such schemes in the county and, as such, represents a very important step forwards. A community hub combines all of the elements of what was the Chatteris One Stop Shop, run by Fenland District Council, with all that went on in Chatteris Library which was run by the County Council, with the staff multi-trained to do library work and offering the advice previously offered at the Fenland@your service shop. It is located at the previous Chatteris library building which has been refurbished and incorporates a private interview room, as well as a similar amount of books. I think this is a hugely important step. Most people don’t care whether a service is provided by a County Council or a District Council - they just want

somewhere to go to raise a concern or use their facilities. So combining these functions into one building provides clarity for residents and saves money because we are using one building instead of two; it also opens the door for others to use the facility as well. Why is this sort of change important for Whittlesey? From my perspective, the more places we can combine this sort of facility the better. Anyone that uses our library will know that it has been more than just a place to loan books for many years, so if we can do the same thing it would be good for everyone. The current timetable suggests that Whittlesey is likely to be the second community hub in Fenland with a timetable planned for next year, although there is a still a lot to do. Ingredients:

4 teaspoons garam masala; 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon turmeric; 1/2 cup all-purpose ﬂour 2 Chicken Breasts; 6 cloves garlic 1 large onion, diced; 4 teaspoons fresh ginger 1 sml can plum tomatoes; 1/3 cup whipping cream

Instructions:

1. Stir together garam masala, salt and turmeric in a small dish. Place flour in a shallow dish. Sprinkle chicken with 1/2 teaspoon of the spice mixture and dredge in the flour. (Reserve the remaining spice mix and 1 tablespoon of the remaining flour.) 2. Heat 2 teaspoons oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken until browned, 1-2 mins per side. Transfer to a plate. 3. Heat the remaining 2 teaspoons oil in the pan over medium-low heat. Add garlic, onion and ginger and cook, stirring often, until starting to brown, 5 to 7 minutes. Add the reserved spice mix and cook, stirring, until fragrant, 4. Sprinkle with the reserved flour and stir until coated. Add tomatoes and their juice. Bring to a simmer, stirring and breaking up the tomatoes with a spoon. Cook, stirring often, until thickened and the onion is tender (around 3-5 mins). 5. Stir in cream. Add the chicken and any leftover juices to the pan. Bring to a simmer and cook over medium-low heat until the chicken is cooked through. September 2013over | Discovering 29 6. eptember is a good time to start tidying up for winter. Even though the garden will soon be dying back, remember to still take care of your plants. Pruning, tying in, dead-heading and clearing away leaves are all important jobs to keep on top of but remember a healthy plant needs to be moist even when it is dying back so keep watering if the weather conditions are dry. Debris from plants that are already dying back should be picked up and disposed of. Condition your soil by digging it over and adding manure at the same time. A little forward planning will mean less work for you to do next year. Insulate your greenhouse with a layer of bubble wrap and give your plants a helping hand through winter. Your greenhouse will have fewer draughts and will also benefit from lower bills if you use a heater during the very cold months. Put a thermometer in a shaded area of the greenhouse so that you can check that the temperature isn’t dropping too suddenly. September is also the best month to seed the lawn. Weed the lawn and sprinkle on grass seed mixed with compost to thicken growth. It is better to get rid of the weeds now than do it later when it is cold and wet. If you decided to use weed killer it is advisable to wait three weeks before you seed the lawn. If you have chosen to seed

Expectations from treatment By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Mistry (Registered Osteopaths)

Amongst the community, we have seen [in the last 3 years] an ever-growing appreciation for osteopathy and its role in helping with many painful conditions. One question we are commonly asked at the first visit is: What can you expect from osteopathic treatment? To answer this question, one must understand that osteopathy works to enhance your bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s own healing potential by removing any obstacles from its path. This could include: 1) 2) 3) 4)

Activities in your daily life that aggravate the problem (e.g. lifting, sitting too long, etc), Stiff areas that are overloading the injured tissues, Tightness in the injured or surrounding tissues, Old strain patterns that affect the functioning of an area.

Ultimately the recovery rate is governed by your general health and healing mechanisms. As a general rule those with a number of medical conditions will take longer to recover then those without. Irrelevant of your medical history we would however expect to see a steady improvement in your symptoms within the first three treatments or 2 to 3 weeks. Symptom improvement may constitute anything from, the pain being less constant, the pain being of a lower intensity, the area of pain decreasing in size, an increased ability to perform activities, sleeping better and greater mobility. The total time for recovery is largely dependent on how long youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had the symptoms for. As a general rule if the problem is:

Duration of problem Less than 1 month 1 to 6 months 6 to 12 months Greater than 12 months

Approximate recovery time 2 to 4 weeks 1 to 2 months 2 to 4 months 6 months

We would obviously expect to see an improving picture over this time frame. In some cases a 100% resolution is unrealistic however we are usually able to make the situation much more manageable. Babies and children tend to be more responsive to osteopathic treatment as their bodies are much more adaptable. Therefore, most problems are usually resolved within 1-2 months.

To summarise osteopathy works with your body to help it recover from injury. Thus the pace of recovery is ultimately governed by your body, we are merely guiding it in the right direction.

IRON MAN 3

When Tony Stark’s world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution, and so begins the return to the Iron Man series. Pleasingly, the third film ticks every box, despite the sci-fi trimmings and goliath budget, director Shane Black gives Iron Man 3 wit, heart and exploding effects. Together with co-writer Drew Pearce, Black sets out to dismantle Iron Man’s armour piece by piece. Like Bond in Skyfall, Tony Stark loses his flash car and big house and is deprived of his super-suits. For the first time we really see a new and vulnerable side to Robert Downsey Jr.’s character as he finds himself on the run and suffering breathless anxiety attacks. Aside from its emotional storyline, the film remains fun and hustles from one set-piece to the next, leavening the gloom with a lot of big laughs. As well as the customary Downey Jr wisecracks, there are moments of slapstick, Downton Abbey references and a suit of armour turning its head. And whilst the villains in this film are a squad of super-soldiers who can regenerate body parts, which are visually quite spectacular, Director and Co-Writer Black perfectly forges the new smart technology and scenarios with a real touch of humour, heart and a great heap of fun. Our verdict – definitely one to rent this month.

Freelance Photographer Martin Peters, enjoyed a lovely sunny weekend in July at the Bikes Trikes n Stuff rally at the Plough, and sent us this report. “My son Jack Peters, who goes to SHSCC, who has just completed his work experience at BTnS, said it was a great place to work for. The staff treated him like one of the lads, helping out with tasks like oil and filter changes, tyre fitting and not just sweeping up! “After completing his placement he was invited to BTnS’s 10th anniversary rally at the Plough Public House in Farcet. This was the first full weekend rally BTnS had put on, and was a big thank you to their customers and friends, and those who have supported them over the last 10 years. “The weekend started on Friday morning for Jack, who helped Jay (the owner of BTnS) and his staff get everything organized and set up, ready for what soon turned out to be a fun filled weekend. Friday saw a steady stream of people and traders arriving and getting ready for the rally, with more to follow on Saturday. There was over 150 people in attendance over the weekend. “On a personal note, it was a great weekend for my son and myself, and roll on next year for another great weekend rally.”

Summer is in full swing the temperature is rising so it was BBQ time at the local Youth club. Myself and PCSO Moll attended which was good to mix with a few young people and get their views on us and the place they live.... Later in August I should have a face book page go live where I hope that I will be able to start communicating with youth groups, which can only be a positive thing since most young people are Facebook crazy and use this as their favoured method of communication. This month has seen some excellent use of stop search with a knuckle duster being recovered and an arrest being made as a result. These type of weapons are strictly illegal and have no other use but to do people damage. So to take them off the streets is nothing but good news, and sends out a strong message to those who may be thinking of carrying items of a similar nature. I have continued my patrols trying to get into most of the businesses in the area and so far this has been well received, giving people a face to face visit can only build relations and build better communications. Our other work in relation to parking offences and speeding continues and our presence is making an impact, we will continue to maintain a strong stance on it and do what we can in the hotspot areas. My final thoughts again ask for your assistance, as a community. You are my eyes and ears if you see something that’s not right or suspicious call us. You are not wasting our time! This month we have had some good calls from the public that have enabled us to direct our time and resources in an effective and efficient manner. Please keep this flow of information coming, without your help our job is very difficult. My best wishes

inancial advisers are in the habit of saying how easy it is to invest wisely. Investment is not a simple subject, like many worthwhile concepts there are many things to consider at the same time. Generally there are two main objectives, one is to make the capital grow – the other is to generate an income, it would be nice to have a bit of both perhaps. There is a truth about investing: If you are prepared to accept more risk – the potential returns should be higher. Looking from the other direction, if you want to minimise risk – don’t expect the higher returns – but the ride should be smoother than a higher risk strategy. Taking risk in isolation we look at two aspects: security of the initial capital invested and the security of the growth and/or income. Maximum capital security may be a cash deposit with a reliable organisation – already there is a risk that the return (interest) will be less than the rate of inflation – and after tax the returns could

be very modest indeed. Knowledge and experience is important – but access to the whole market is also important if a suitable portfolio of investments is to be put together. Many Banks and Building Societies suggest a cash deposit when a plan matures – this is because in many cases there is nothing else they are allowed to advise on – however, while the capital may be secure within certain limits – the growth or income potential tends to be taxable and of a very modest interest rate. With inflation at or around three per cent – anything less than this is actually losing value. As I indicated earlier – investing does require careful consideration. A fully trained Independent Financial Adviser will guide you through the options currently available and will preserve any tax efficient wrappers such as an ISA that may still be attached to the maturing plan. Maybe this is the first opportunity for investing – this makes it even more important to take advice at an early stage.

Do you ever groan because you get stuck in a queue behind a tractor when you are in a rush? Are you worried that wildlife is disappearing from farmland, such as the skylarks you heard as a child? We can all be affected by the above and it’s easy to blame farmers, especially with harvest approaching, when many farm vehicles will be out on the road, but do you ever stop and think what they are doing? Do you know some of your local farmers are producing the potatoes for your chips, sugar for your tea and coffee and mustard for your family roasts, to name just a few items? Do you know that these same farmers are also hard at work with the RSPB helping to give nature a home on their land? It is due to this network of farmers, working across the Thorney Farmland Bird Friendly Zone (between Peterborough and Wisbech), that not only are there more habitats for declining farmland birds like lapwings and corn buntings but also for many other farmland species including hares,

hoverflies and water voles. Thanks to these farmers’ work and support, the RSPB is now able to offer opportunities for all ages and abilities to come and discover how farmers are helping wildlife on their farms. We’ll be arranging a number of visits to both local villages and the farms themselves for you to find out more between September 2013 and January 2014, including opportunities to come on a nature walk or have a go at creating a home for wildlife yourself. So, go on spread the word and look out for posters appearing in and around the Thorney district with news of events. Leaving for Packing for university can be a stressful time and an expensive one too. Depending on your accommodation you will need to take all of your belongings with you and the necessities you will need for the kitchen and bathroom. This page has been written to guide you in the right direction on the best things to take to university with you and cheap places to find them. By Tanya Puk Kitchen equipment Towels and bath mats For kitchen equipment, take a look at John Lewis online where they have a whole section dedicated to university called ‘Off to university’. Here you will find all the kitchen necessities you will need, and for a cheap price. Before starting university you may find it easier to do a weeks worth of food shopping before arriving so that you don’t have to worry about doing it whilst trying to settle in. Don’t forget to watch out for special offers.

Laptops If you are thinking of buying a new laptop for university there are many different electrical stores that are offering special offers. If you are looking for an Apple Mac the best place to buy it from is from the Apple store. Apple is offering students who are buying a Mac for university a £70 app store gift card. PC world has a good deal on for the new autumn term plus if you find a laptop cheaper elsewhere they will match the price and beat it by giving a 10% difference.

Many places have a large colour collection of towels and bath mats. You can buy all matching colours to make your bathroom colour co-ordinated. If this is what you want to do and for a cheap price the best places to look are either Argos with their ‘colour match’ section or from Wilkinson’s where you can buy normal bath towels for no more than £10.

Bedroom decorative items You may want to take some objects from your own room at home to take to make your room at University more homely. Finally, remember to take some extra storage boxes with you as some universities only give you the bare minimal amount of storage. Take a look at Argos’s website where a variety off different storage options available.

Whilst it is focused on the more vulnerable people in our community, anyone can fall downstairs or have a car accident, so this scheme can benefit anyone, including you. As a minimum it will save the Emergency Services valuable time identifying you and your emergency contacts. By telling whether you have special medication or allergies or not, it is a potential lifesaver and provides peace of mind to users and their friends and families. The Lions Message In a Bottle scheme is a simple idea designed to encourage people to keep their personal and medical details on a standard form and in a common location - the Fridge. The system is simple, the following details outline what you need to do.

1. Fill in the form with your medical details, allergies etc. 2. Place the form in the green bottle and then the bottle goes in the fridge 3. Place one of the green stickers on the outside of the fridge door 4 Place the other green sticker on the inside of your front door

All Emergency Services are aware of the Lions Message in a Bottle scheme, and will locate the bottle and pass it on to a doctor or hospital personnel in an emergency. Bottles, which are free of charge, can usually be found in your local Chemist or Doctors Surgeries. Thanks to a number of other organisations, you may also find that you can obtain one through Whittlesey Library, all local chemists and the Osteopath above the Council Offices in Grosvenor House. Memory of local big issue seller lives on Earlier this year, Whittlesey’s own Big Issue seller Mick, sadly passed away. Mick was only in his fifties, and his death serves as a reminder of how tough living on the streets can be. Like most sellers, Mick was often seen by the Co-Operative supermarket, selling magazines in all weather, supporting himself and other homeless individuals. He was a kind man, who loved music and would often be seen chatting. Although very stoic about his own situation, Mick had been selling the Big Issue on and off since 1998, and in particular had been in Whittlesey from February 2009. In memory of him, a Just Giving page has been opened and you can now make a small donation to help others in a similar situation. Park Lane Summer Fayre A fantastic day was had by all at the Park Lane Summer Fayre. The sun shone down and hundreds of people attended the event which was opened by the Mayor and Mayoress. The crowds were entertained by Peterborough & District Pipe Band, Footwork's Gymnastics and Park Lane's very own Samba Band and Year 6 dancers. There were lots of stalls including pony rides, cake stall and our newest game, the stocks which proved very popular! This year we were fed by Simon Norris from J. Jones Butchers who ran our BBQ and the Ladies Circle who manned the café. Lots of thanks must go to the businesses and groups of Whittlesey and the surrounding areas for their generous donations to our cause and also to the cake bakers, the tin providers, the stall volunteers and all those who attended the day. Special thanks to Jamie & Anish Keshwara from Nisa Local for their support and to the staff of Barclays Bank Whittlesey for their help on the day. Many thanks from the Friends Of Park Lane School team!

Over the summer months members of Ladysmith W.I. and guests have enjoyed a birthday party celebration, a very interesting and informative trip to Thorney Museum and Abbey followed by a meal, and a Bring & Share Picnic with a delicious selection of food followed by a fun quiz.
