ast month was the busiest yet - not only have we got another bumper 72page issue, but we also launched our very first issue of Discovering March. Thank you to those of you who have supported it and have wished us well. We are all very excited about expanding our small family of magazines. Of course Discovering Whittlesea is my first baby, and we’ve had some really wonderful events over the last few weeks - most notably the Whittlesey Festival. Yes it was cold, yes it was a little wet at times, but I’m sure you will agree that there were again some fabulous stalls, entertainment and activities for all ages. I enjoyed some excellent music in St Marys Church, bought some delicious cheese and fudge and showed Dylan some wonderful cars. I’d like to thank the organisers for once again making a wonderful day for all. For those of you who support the Straw Bear Festival, you will probably recognise the lovely man on our front cover this month - he is of course Brian Kell, revivor and great organiser of the Straw Bear. Last month he was awarded with the British Empire Medal. To find out more turn to page 11. This month we are excited to announce that there will be a new vets in Whittlesey. Opening Monday 7th of October, they are extending a free consultation until the 19th of this month. For more information see page 33. Finally, I’d like to mention a charity dinner which is being organised by a friend of the magazine, Paul Harris. Raising funds for Heal, the dinner, live music and auction night will be on the 29th of November. Make sure you buy a ticket before they all sell out. Manor Leisure Centre play consultation Fenland District Council and Whittlesey Town Council are looking to improve and relocate the current play facilities at the Manor, with the location being close to the main buildings. They propose to create a fully enclosed equipped play space suitable for toddlers, juniors and teenagers with play equipment suitable for everyone, including a seating area for parents. They are keen to seek your views regarding this exciting new development. Questionnaires will only take a few minutes and you could help to shape the future play facilities for our children and the next generation. 2013 Flu Vaccination Clinic Saturday 12 October 2013 The Jenner Health Centre will be running its annual seasonal Flu Vaccination Clinic on Saturday 12 October 2013. The Clinic will start at 09:00am and will run through to 12:30pm and is open to patients who are registered with the Practice. The Clinic operates on a â&#x20AC;&#x153;walkinâ&#x20AC;? basis, so you do not need to make an appointment. Annual Flu Vaccinations are recommended

for all patients who are 65 years of age or over and for any patients who suffer from a chronic disease. This includes patients who have a respiratory disease (including Asthma), heart disease, renal problems, liver disease, Diabetes or a neurological disease such as a stroke. Any patients who are receiving treatment for a condition which suppresses their immune system are also invited to attend together with any patients who act as the main carer for an elderly or disabled person. The vaccination is also available to all pregnant patients.

Whittlesey Festival 2013 Thank you for supporting the Whittlesey Festival Photographs by Matt Popely Organisers of the Whittlesey Festival would like to say a huge thank you to all those that supported the event on Sunday 15 September. The brisk weather didn’t deter everyone from having a fun –filled, action packed day out with lots of smiling faces to be seen. The Festival started with a parade from Broad Street before the official opening at the Market Square by the Mayor of Whittlesey, Councillor David Mason. It truly was a wonderful atmosphere that lasted throughout the whole day. Children enjoyed free face painting, puppet shows and fairground rides amongst many other activities. There was plenty to do for the adults and everyone enjoyed watching the various dance displays and musical presentations including the Peterborough Highland Band. One of the ‘Wow moments’ of this year’s Festival was the World War II Spitfire and Hurricane plane fly-past . It was truly an amazing sight as they circled overhead several times much to the delight of the crowds. It was very emotional too as it served as a reminder of all those loyal folk that fought on our behalf during the war. Another highlight was the display of over 100 classic vehicles that lined the main streets. This really brought back memories for 8

many people and present day enthusiasts alike. The Festival Schools Art Exhibition was held at the Whittlesey Christian Church with over 100 entries on display from local schools including Park Lane, Alderman Jacobs, New Road, Coates and Sir Harry Smith Community College (SHSCC). Prizes and trophies were awarded on Festival day by the Mayor of Whittlesey. It was great to see so many visitors to the Exhibition and the positive feedback was such an encouragement to the pupils who had their work on display.

Another popular competition that took place was the Beautiful Baby competition with the winner being awarded a complimentary portrait session courtesy of ‘The Studio’ in Whittlesey. There was plenty to see and do and once again we thank you for your valuable support and we’re already looking forward to next year. LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA British Empire Medal Awarded to Brian Kell Last month, our very own Brian Kell, who was one of the few recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list, received his British Empire Medal (BEM). Thanks to Brian and his services to the community in reviving the Straw Bear Festival, Whittlesey has once again been placed firmly on the map. Brian explained: “When I was asked if I would accept the award, some six weeks before the official announcement I mentally played it down as I did not consider myself worthy. As soon as the news was announced, the joy and pride expressed by others made me reconsider this. It became clear, without the support of others, in particular the contribution made by Christine, my wife, Straw Bear would not have the profile it has to day. Still the accolades came flooding in. So much so, I can only liken my feelings at the investiture on Friday 20 September 2013 as being that of an Olympian gold medal recipient, standing on the winner’s podium, whilst the national anthem is being played.”

Whittlesey's Friendship Group Whittlesey's Friendship Group meets every Saturday from 2pm - 4pm at Whittlesey Methodist and URC Church, Queen Street, Whittlesey, for anyone over 50 to come along and spend few hours out and about at the weekend. Last month Margaret Herstell, organiser of the club, organised an outing to Rutland Water and

Barnsdale Gardens on Monday 2nd September. The weather was beautiful which set up the day nicely for a lunch at Rutland Water and an afternoon spent around the beautiful gardens at Barnsdale. 50 people attended and the group are now looking forward to the next trip to Bury St Edmunds Christmas Fair on Friday 29th November.

ADave word from Mason Education is a great thing and those of us who have had the beneﬁt of such an experience very often take the basics of education for granted or assume in our ignorance that everyone has the knowledge to lead full and rewarding lives without necessarily realising the obstacles that stand in the way of some in achieving their potential. This past month Ann and I had the privilege of visiting establishments within our community of Whittlesey that have reminded us of the needs of others and filled us with admiration for those people who give their time freely to educate both young and old with endless patience and understanding. Our first visit took us to New Road Children’s Centre to join in celebrations at an afternoon party with the children and their parents. After chatting with parents and posing for photographs with the children we spent time with the staff and were made aware of the difficulties experienced by young parents struggling to make ends meet, many of whom had come from disadvantaged families themselves and not had the opportunity of learning the basics of hygiene or even to prepare simple meals for their children and were finding life increasingly difficult surviving on meagre financial resources. I am delighted to report that along with the local Whittlesey Town Councillor Alan Bristow I have been able to offer some tangible assistance to this most worthy cause which we hope will make a difference to the future of the centre. Another visit involved spending a Sunday afternoon with the Fens Disabled Bowls Association where dedicated members of the Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Centre had patiently taught mentally and physically disabled youngsters and adults to master the art of carpet bowls to a remarkably high standard. The increase in confidence that the bowlers demonstrated and the great social bonding between them all was heart warming and again we felt privileged to be able to assist in suggesting possible funding as their previous funding from Fenland District Council has now ceased. Should you wish to support this worthy cause the Association meet regularly on Wednesday evenings from 6pm at the indoor bowls complex in Station Road. Ann and I had the delight of being invited by the staff of the Whittlesey Library to present certificates to all young children who had taken up the reading challenge during the summer holidays to read a minimum of six books. In these days of technology with computers and Kindles readily available it is refreshing to see youngsters being encouraged to educate themselves with the help of their parents in the traditional method of book reading and our thanks go out to all the staff of the library and

parents who have encouraged the children in this venture. We were also delighted to receive on behalf of the Whittlesey Town Council an activity scrapbook from the children which will be permanently housed at Grosvenor House. Continuing the theme of education our next Whittlesey Town Council meeting on Wednesday 9 October will be hosted by Sir Harry Smith Community College to link in with the students Democracy Week which follows the week after our own meeting. Dave and Ann Mason with the I am grateful to the winners of trophies at the Fens College Principal, Disabled Bowls Association Jonathan Digby, and his staff for this unique opportunity and I trust that the students will find it a worthwhile exercise to see first hand how their local council conducts its business. The public as usual are welcome to attend but please note the new start time of 6.30pm. Discussions have taken place recently with representatives of Whittlesey and Fenland District Councils together with Sir Harry Smith Community College on the setting up of a heritage trail in Whittlesey to highlight places of historical interest within the town. This project will shortly go out for public consultation and I would urge citizens of Whittlesey to support this venture and put forward their ideas for consideration. Finally you will recall that I have asked in past issues for the public’s comments on items of concern and in particular on the bus services in and around Whittlesey. Whilst I have received some responses I would ask for further comments in writing to be made to me personally and delivered to the Whittlesey Town Council offices in Grosvenor Road so that as a Council we may lobby the various bus companies and Cambridgeshire County Council on your behalf. Without your comments the job of the Whittlesey Town Council is made that much more difficult so please support us in the task of improving facilities for all.

All Good News for Street Pride

n the 10th August we held our Chairman’s 5th annual Street Priders BBQ, we are always very grateful to the Feldale Lake Fishing Club for allowing us to use their excellent facilities – and it didn’t rain this year. 33 members and families enjoyed a very good afternoon and big thanks to Jackie Prebble, Sandra Wright and Connie Gerstner for a delicious BBQ. We raised £125.00 towards Feldales annual charity – Mr Peter Davies presented the cheque to Colin Garton Feldale Chairman at our bi-monthly meeting on the 21st August. As we announced last month, our next ‘Big’ project to build and install an environmentally and disabled friendly picnic bench at our Ramsey Road Gateway entrance, is moving slowly ahead – we have all the permissions required and have a local contractor who will build the base to the required standards. More news as the project progresses. The 2013 Daffodil and Bulb planting campaign is advanced and we have ‘nearly’ reached our target to finance this project – again we thank many individuals and local businesses for their very generous support in donations. This will be

the final year for Daffodils, but we may consider other wildflowers or bulbs in coming years. Our ambitious plan is for some 20,000+ Daffodils, 5,000 Crocus and 5,000 Snowdrops. If you can help Street Pride in any way – donate a bag of bulbs or come along for ‘The Big Dig’ which will be on Saturday 19th October – meet at 10:00am at Kings Delph Layby – and please bring along a ‘Spade’ Our core litter picking activities are still going very well – We make a big difference - and include our villages, we recently went to Turves/ Three Horseshoes – the village was pretty clean but the rubbish was around the ‘Level Crossing’ area. id you hear lots of chatting and some lovely singing coming from Childers Social Club one sunny afternoon in mid-August? Well if you did, it was over 50 guests and regular users of the Whittlesey Community Car Scheme, renewing acquaintance and reminiscing over afternoon tea, with entertainment from Singchronicity, a ladies’ 4-part harmony group. Having benefitted from a donation from the Mayor’s Charities earlier in the year, the Scheme Committee decided that it was only right to use some of that gift to benefit our regular passengers. Proceedings were opened by the current Whittlesey Mayor, Cllr David Mason, and so the chatting commenced over a buffet of sandwiches, sausage rolls, mini sausages, crisps, and of course tea and cakes. Singchronicity provided the breaks to regain breath and replenish plates. The afternoon was rounded off with a free raffle ticket, kindly drawn by the Mayor. Our guests have said how much they’d enjoyed themselves, and for some it was a rare opportunity to enjoy an afternoon out in good company. Our huge thanks to all who helped to make the afternoon such a success. If you would like more information about the scheme, call 07810 427483. Alderman John Lefevre

f Huguenot descent, John Lefevre had a harness and saddlery shop but the family often dropped the French prefix to be plain Fevre. A stone in the boundary wall of his former premises in Queen street “J.F. – 1882” bears this out. He was invited to give a talk at the Oddfellows Supper on 23rd November 1893 and took the opportunity of introducing into his speech the surnames of many of the inhabitants of the Town at the time. As many of these names are still identifiable today it is worth repeating. He commenced as follows: “Amongst the inhabitants we find a BUTCHER and BAKER, a COOK and BUTLER, a GROOM and CARTER, a MERCHANT and PORTER, a BARBER and SKINNER, a SLATER and THACKER, a BINDER and TURNER, a WHEELER and COOPER, a TAYLOR and PLUMBER and a HARPER and HANGER. I once heard it said that life in the Fens must be awfully monotonous, there was no scenery. No scenery in the Fens! Why we have HILL and DALE, PEAKS and CLIFFE, ARBER and BOWERS, GREENWOOD and MEADOWS; a GRANGE with a HALL, CHAMBERS and KITCHEN; GROUNDS with ELMS, UNDERWOOD and HOLT and the BREESES to stir them; WELLS and FOUNTAINS, BROOKES and a POOLE; WATERS and a FORD over them with a WATERHOUSE and BUTTS to preserve them in; while around our HOUSEHOLDS are GARTONS with MOULDS GOODENOUGH to produce at the same time MACE and MUSK and CRABTREE; also LILLEY and the ROSE, with the proverbial THORN whilst in an OLDFIELD is to be found BERRY, PEACH, PLUM and LEMON with BARNES and GARNERS to store them in. Near by is a WOOD and WOODHOUSE, COLE and a FURNACE to burn them in, a FUNNEL to carry off the smoke, an ASHMAN to sift the cinders and a BROOM to sweep away the dust. Flitting about from tree to tree are WOODCOCK and NIGHTINGALE whilst beneath are COX flapping their WINGS and on the surface of the MOAT, gracefully gliding amongst the REED are timid COOTE and DRAKE, occasionally startled by the approach of HEAD and GILLS of some voracious FISH. To those living here sport is natural and we have FOX and HUNT and a FITZWILLIAM to lead the way; we have BOOR and BULL, BUCK and DEER, HARTS, HINDS and FAWNS and a WARREN with many BURROWS. During these sports we once had GINN to drink but now console ourselves with BURGUNDY, BASS, BURTON and PORTER with a PITCHER to drink it from and a BAND to play during the repast. But remember the weather is changeable, for a while it is FAIRWEATHER in the Church Street, we have FROST in Syer’s Lane, HAILSTONES in Claygate and a GALE at Coates, We have over us a KING, with LAUD CHAMBERLAIN, MARSHALL and SERGEANT. We have PARISH and CHURCH, a POPE, a BISHOP, a DEAN and CHAPLAIN, PARSONS and CLARKE. Strange but true, we have in our midst ADAM and EVE, ABRAHAM, ISAAC, MATHEW, MARK, ANDREW and PHILIP. We have an ARMSTRONG to

make our CANNON and MASONS to mount them for our hero’s of the sea in BLAKE and HAWKINS and NELSON. May we not all HARTLEY say of such men “WELDON”. We have men from HULL, DONCASTER, CLIFTON and RAMSEY of CHESHIRE, LANCASTER and WARWICK to say nothing of the BRITTAIN, ENGLISH, FRENCH, SCOTS, NORMAN, GERMAN and POLES. I must, however tell you we have a DAY and KNIGHT which make a DOUBLEDAY; a HOWE A WYE a REASON a HURRY a TARRY and a WAITE. A READ, a WRIGHT and four tall STOREYS, several MILLS and lots of MILLERS; LOCK and KEY, RUST and EMERY to clean it with, MAIZE and a PECK to measure it with, SKINNER and HYDES for them to dress into LEATHERS, a LAST to make shoes upon and big and little SPRIGGS to rivet them together. In letters we have HAY, SEE, GEE and WYE and amongst other various items are ANKERS without ships, STOCKINGS without feet, HARTS but no lungs, BEARDS but no chins, BONE and BLOOD and a real live musical SKELTON. Amongst us, some are WHITE, some BROWN, some GREEN and others GREY. We have REDHEADS and WHITEHEADS, YOUNG and STRONG, SHORT and LONG, BIG and LITTLE, TALL and LOWE, FREEMAN and SAVAGE, MASTERS, FOREMAN and MANN. There are BLUNTS, SHARPS and FLATTS a GOODMAN a TRUEMAN, one GOODLEY, MEEK and NOBLE yea and a DEARLOVE, yet hard as FLINT and as strong as a BULLOCK. I must also say we have them CRISP, CROSS and RUFF and without FEAR. Here comes however a BLANK for one is a HUSSEY and another a SUTER. We have HODDER, FREEAR, FULLER and RICHER men than any town of the same size, indeed they cannot be BEATON. It is said that in the Fens men LIVETT as long as the please, still I should fail in my duty were I not, in conclusion, to remind my hearers of the stern realities of life and tell them that there is ever in our midst, FEVRE, PAYNE and DEATH. We can every day see large and small GRAVES and we can all find HOLMES in the Cemetery.” – A very apt conclusion””

A word from Revd Nigel and Revd Gill We all know that sinking feeling when the heating stops working and the panic when we realise that the boiler has given up altogether. We have to sort out the budget to see if we can afford the repairs or replacement. Then comes the question of how long will it take? Who can we employ to do the work? We know the relief that we feel when repairs are carried out, the heating is back on and the bill is paid. Occasionally we look around and realise that the time has come to decorate one or more rooms and carry out some repairs. We share the joy of planning the redecoration, but might not be so keen on sorting out the repairs. When the work is done and the upset to routines are over we can look upon a job well done. Whether we did the work ourselves or employed someone to do it we can sit back and enjoy our repaired and newly decorated living space. With the use of our parish churches there are similar responsibilities for repairs and maintenance. Each parish church depends upon local financial support to fulfil these duties. Depending on the nature of the work there may be limited grants available from various groups, for example the Heritage Lottery Fund. There is no direct state funding. Our four churches depend upon the generosity of local people. The monies come from the generous giving of congregations, legacies and sometimes

donations in memory of the deceased at a funeral. St. Mary’s, St. Andrew’s and Holy Trinity churches also have a Friends’ Organisation, we are grateful for their fundraising efforts and tireless support. Work on redecorating the interior of St Mary’s church is due to start in the second week of October and should be completed by 8th November in time for Remembrance Sunday. During this time St Mary’s church will not be available for services. St Andrew’s church will be the alternative venue. However, St Andrew’s church faces the problem of no heating due to the boiler coming to the end of its working life. This work will be done when the £45,000 (estimated cost for the replacement of the boiler and the provision of extra radiators) is raised. This means that from October of this year until Easter 2014 St Andrew’s Sunday services will be held in the hall. We hope to provide space heaters in the event of St Andrew’s church being required for other services. God bless you all from Nigel and Gill

With winter just around the corner its time once again to get the predator tackle out and with some of the best and most exciting fishing right on our doorstep you will be sorry you missed out on the great sport if you do not give it a try. For those that enjoy a quiet days sport on the fen drains then the likes of Glassmoor Bank, Cock Bank and of course the Twenty Foot Drains all have fighting fit pike to target as well as zander if you can sort out a few hot spots. Quite a few anglers also like the competitive side of our sport and the Whittlesey club have been quick to spot this and will be running a series of matches for adults and juniors over the coming months and weeks. First up will be the junior events for 16 year olds and under, all matches will draw at 9.15am and fishing will be from 10am till 1pm. Sunday 13th October 2013 at - Chapel Bridge on Glassmoor Bank is the first one and will be sponsored by Sheltons Tackle. Then it’s onto Sunday 20th October 2013 at Pott’s bridge on the 20ft Foot Drain, sponsored this time by J & A Carpets. On Sunday 27th October 2013 at Chapel Bridge the club will host The “MICK BRITAIN” MEMORIAL TROPHY” which will see cash prizes up for grabs.

Vesuvio has a brand new look!

Local restaurant, Vesuvio, has a brand new look thanks to interior designer Simon Parr Black and artist Jan Atkin. Chris Brudenell popped down to take a few pictures of the beautiful restaurant and we spoke to Simon and Jan about their inspiration.

Simon Parr Black, interior designer, explained more: “Maria and Peppe asked me if I could help with refurbishing their restaurant Vesuvio. They have worked terribly hard over the last couple of years since opening but realised that the time had come for a new look for the establishment. We worked together to achieve a slightly muted colour palette, combining the paint colours with the new roman blinds and artwork depicting their own food. Chris Brudenell spent time with them both to showcase their range of food and service, with some great shots of Peppe! We also changed the lighting to make it more intimate. Overall, we made some quite simple changes to get the focus to the food and the atmosphere.” Simon has worked in the Interior Design business now for 25 years! Having worked on such prestigious projects at the Savoy, Claridges, Marriott, Kempinski etc, alongside many private homes and retail businesses. A word from

Whittlesey Christian Church We’re Almost There

Those attending the various groups we host throughout the week along with those attending the recent Whittlesey Festival and visited the Schools Art Exhibition will have already seen the changes taking place as we progress closer to the completion of the total remodelling of our church. The downstairs area is well on the way to completion. To say the least it’s been an interesting and certainly challenging period to go through. For those who have passed by and been left trying to guess at what is happening with some asking me if it’s being turned into offices or apartments, and has the church closed. I’ve never figured out whether that was being asked out of wishful thinking or regret. So let me provide everyone with the facts. Certainly the church is not closing, quite the contrary. Our continued growth makes it necessary to provide more space to grow numerically, and to create the facilities required to extend our commitment to playing a vital role in being at the heart of the spiritual and natural life of our community. When finished we will have one large room downstairs, instead of the previous church and rear hall arrangement, while the installation of a new second floor will give us a range of smaller rooms. This second floor will also make it possible to provide something which has been close to my heart for several years, namely a room which will be open throughout the week and specifically dedicated to providing a quiet area for those who feel the need

for a time of reflection and peace. We are living in pressured times and believe it’s important for the church to be seen as a safe, open and relaxing place to be. Once the upstairs and various other jobs are completed we will be hosting a Grand Opening, probably sometime early next year. Throughout this whole project we have endeavoured to retain the architectural aspect of the exterior of our historic building while modernising the interior to reflect the welcoming nature of our church family and to provide us with the technology helpful to a modern and relevant charismatic style service. What Is Happening With The Planned New Church? Plans have already been passed for a dedicated church to be built on what is currently our car parking area and seating approximately 350. Work will begin on this as soon as it is practical to do so. This will link into our existing building which will then become a dedicated multi-function facility.

A word from Cllr Martin Curtis

One of the frustrations about Local Government is how slowly it moves. Sometimes it causes a disconnect between Councils and Councillors as well as between Councillors and you (and we should never forget that we serve you). Perfect examples of this are the fact that Kings Dyke Crossing is likely to take three years from making the decision to build a bridge to actually finishing construction or the current planning application for a Whittlesey Supermarket where the committee decision to support Sainsbury was made back in January and a formal approval has yet to be issued. It is worth adding that there are often good reasons for some of these delays because of the need for consultation and to ensure public accountability. One benefit of the Cabinet system that is used to make decisions in most local authorities is that it streamlines the decision making process that Councillors use and, when applied properly, ensures that every single person involved in the decision has opportunity to challenge and improve a paper before it comes to the formal decision – which prevents ongoing delays whilst more information and clarity is sought. Those members who are not part of the Cabinet then play an important independent role in

holding Cabinet to account for the effectiveness of the decisions that have been made. Some of you know that at our first Full Council meeting after the elections Cambridgeshire County Council made a decision to revert back to the committee system of Governance. One of the benefits of the committee system is that all Councillors are involved in decision making in some way, but it is clear that this will mean that the speed at which we make decisions will slow down, but also that a significant number of the members involved in the decision making will go into meetings without the benefit of being involved in the revision and challenge process that streamlines and enhances the decisions they will be responsible for. Whilst none of this is perfect, I do wonder whether people really care about how decisions are made. My own view is that voters care about the quality of political decisions and would also prefer processes that speed things up rather than slow them down further. But I would love to know your views. 4 Lamb Neck Fillets. (I sell these in the shop); Salt and Pepper; Mixture of Red Onion, Squash, Courgette, Carrot (or whatever your preference); 1 Large Garlic Clove; Ground Nutmeg; Dried Chilli; Sunflower Oil; Butter For The Marinade 2 Garlic Cloves, Peeled and Crushed; 2 Sprigs Fresh Rosemary; 2tbsp Dry White Wine; 2tbsp Oilve Oil For The Dressing Handfull of Fresh Thyme; 1 Garlic Clove, Chopped; 2 Shallots, Peeled and Chopped Fine Grated Zest of 1 Lemon; 4 Anchovy Fillets, drained and finely chopped; Olive Oil For The Marinade 1. Prepare the Lamb marinade by mixing all the ingredients together, place the fillets in a bowl and spoon over the marinade, cover and refrigerate for 2 hours. 2. Prepare the dressing by mixing all the ingredients except the oil in a small bowl, season and then slacken the mixture with enough oil to give a nice spooning consistency. 3. Preheat oven to Gas mark 9, 250c. Place the roughly chopped vegetables in a large bowl and toss with salt, pepper, garlic, nutmeg, chilli and oil. Tip out into a large roasting tray and add knobs of butter to the pan. Cook for 15 mins then reduce the oven temperature down to Gas mark 5, 190c, turn and cook for a further 15 mins. They should be nice and brown on the outside and tender on the inside 4.Heat a large non stick griddle or frying pan until smoking hot. Season the lamb with salt and pepper and cook for 5 - 10 mins on each side, depending on how well done you want them. Transfer to a warm plate to rest for 5 mins. 5. Place a large spoonful of roasted veg into the centre of a plate, slice each fillet into chunky slices and place over the veg. lthough we may still get some warm days during the coming weeks, there’s no getting away from the fact that autumn is now here. It is a beautiful time of the year though, and as the trees start to change colour before dropping their leaves there’s still work to be done during the month. • Clear fallen autumn leaves regularly. • Plant trees and shrubs. • Plant bulbs. • Cut back and divide herbaceous perennials. • Move tender plants into the greenhouse or conservatory. • Harvest apples and pears. If you’re already longing for a splash of spring colour to bring you out of the winter gloom then bulbs are a brilliant way of adding colour to the garden. Bulbs are easy to grow, cheap and can be grown in most garden situations such as pots, borders, rock gardens and grass. They burst from the ground and bring highlights of interest to the garden when there is very little else happening. Get the best results from your bulbs all year round: • Bulbs generally need to be planted in a hole around three times their size in well-drained soil. • Plant in layers according to flowering time. A layer of late flowering daffs planted beneath snowdrops will ensure that as one flower dies off another will be ready to bloom. • If you need to move bulbs do it when they have finished flowering but are still in leaf. • Don’t plant bulbs in an area of garden that requires regular digging. Bulbs produce the best displays if left to naturalise. • Feed established bulbs after flowering to ensure a good display next year. • Don’t cut back after flowering. A bulbs leaves are storing food to support next year’s display.

Our Connecting tissues

By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Mistry (Registered Osteopaths) This month we are looking at the design of our most abundant body tissue, connective tissue. We will show you that although it has many shapes, forms and functions it is nevertheless beautifully simple. Human tissue can be split into four categories. a) Muscular tissue b) Nervous tissue c) Organ lining tissue d) Connective tissue

- the contractile tissue consisting of voluntary and involuntary muscles, - the controlling tissue consisting of our nerves, spinal cord and brain, - the protecting tissue that lines the surface of our organs, - everything else, i.e. our blood, lymph, ligaments, tendons, fat, bone, organs, blood vessels, etc.

The first 3 categories define specific tissues with a singular purpose whereas connective tissue has many different purposes. Despite having lots of different roles, each connective tissue type is constructed in the same way. There are 3 components: Cells - the living part of the tissue that allows it to adapt and regenerate. Fibres â&#x20AC;&#x201C; give the tissue its strength and elasticity. Matrix â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this packs the free spaces between the cells and the fibres. It defines the tissues density, texture and appearance. The cells give the tissue its ability to adapt to our surroundings as well regenerate when damaged. E.g. if we start to lift heavy loads regularly the cells in our ligaments become more active thus making our ligaments thicker and stronger. Fibres come in 3 types; collagen, elastin and reticular fibres. Collagen fibres tend to be strong, elastin fibres are elastic and reticular fibres are a combination of the two. The tissue purpose will determine the proportions of each fibre. For example a blood vessel needs to be elastic and therefore has more elastin then collagen, whilst a tendon needs to strong and so has a greater amount of collagen fibres. The matrix can be liquid, gelatinous, semi-solid or solid. It is made from different proteins, organic/ non-organic molecules and water. Again, the tissue purpose determines the relative proportions. E.g. blood contains a large amount of water hence its liquid form. Bone on the other hand contains very little water but a lot of non-organic molecules (i.e. calcium) hence its colour, density and brittleness. Our cartilage (which lines the surface of our joints) contains an even proportion of water and protein hence it is strong but spongey.

In summary, the body is able to create tissues that look, feel and act very differently by following the same recipe but simply varying the quantity of each ingredient. World War The movie, which is an adaptation of Max Brooks’s 2006 bestseller World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, became the most expensive zombie film ever made when it was released this summer. World War Z stars Brad Pitt, in a world where a sudden outbreak of a zombie plague leaves the globe in tatters. Pitt plays a former UN worker Gerry Lane, who after finding his family refuge, heads off to Asia in search of a cure. The film is slick and tense, and launches from the off straight into the action with an entire city being overrun. Director Marc Forster plays the sequence beautifully, keeping the monsters virtually unseen and making the chaos unnerving in itself. And unlike other zombie films, the un-dead in this blockbuster don’t just run, but leap, clamber and power-slide about with inhuman gusto. With an ending that suggests there’s more to follow, World War Z won’t disappoint. There are scenes which are genuinely horrifying, Brad Pitt is brilliant, and you might well be reaching for your pillow for comfort.

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Whittlesey Wind Ensemble Celebrate Anniversary We have just celebrated our first anniversary of the Whittlesey Wind Ensemble by giving a concert in St Mary`s Church in Whittlesey during the Whittlesey Festival. For us to grow musically and in personnel we are holding an Open Evening on Thursday 17th October 7.45 pm at Queen Street Methodist Church Hall in Whittlesey. PE7 1AY. We require Clarinets,Cornet/Trumpet, Horns Trombone and Tuba. Anyone interested (Grade 3 minimum) come along and see what we are about. POLICING YOUR AREA Over the summer the policing team has been very busy and a great deal of the community has been following this on the newly established facebook page which is now up and running, it is receiving some interesting feedback and good coverage, so thank you. For those not yet following, we as a team have been working hard in our patrols to catch persons stealing fuel and catalytic converters. We have utilised powers of stop and search, and though no arrests were made in connection with these offences I know the patrols deterred criminals from being in the area and committing crime through fear of being caught. We have executed warrants from the court for persons failing to appear before the courts and discovered a small cannabis factory, and located a stolen motor car. A number of arrests were made over the summer months for a variety of reasons from drink drive through to assualts which is pleasing. We have also worked hard in being seen around the town to reduce the shoplifting that has occurred, this seems to have been a success as we have seen a reduction. Burglaries and cycle thefts seem to have decreased during this period, I place this down to a mixture of good effective patrols from the team and significant arrests that were made in the last few months which sends out a strong message to those who wish to try there luck within our community. I have also noted that we are more security aware and people have listened to our advice which is great to see. have seen a reduction. In patricular it has been noted that both churches are suffering from late night drinkers in the grounds causing disturbance and leaving a mess. We are aware of this and working with the local vicar to see this does not continue. I have also had a complaints from residents about noise from quad bikes, please be assurred this has seen a lot of work from the local team and we are still seeking a solution to this issue. Parking and Speeding has been addressed as this is a concern of the community. We have issued over thirty tickets and given many words of advice to motorists. Still it is a issue but one we can not solve on our own, just enforce and manage where applicable. Our last speedwatch meeting only saw one member of the public turn up to assist so if you would like to support us or find out more please do feel free to contact PCSO Moll or myself. Schools have returned with some new faces and I am aiming this Autum to get more into the schools and meet with the younger generations of Whittlesey. Last school year saw me getting into Sir Harry Smith more, and I found this very useful for engaging with young people and listening to what concerns they have, so will be pushing this out to the other schools also. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a byte size piece about what the local team has achieved and still continues to progress, hope to see more facebook followers soon. Many thanks

welve months ago I wrote in this publication explaining how to extract the maximum benefit from your pension arrangements by approaching an Independent Financial Adviser such as myself, this advice is still valid and even more important in the current economic climate. However, this time I would like to point out some advantages in using pensions as part of your retirement planning. Pensions are a form of investment, they epitomise the tradition of putting something aside when you can influence income for a time when you may not be able to do so. The government approve of such prudence so they provide tax incentives to make it easier. For example, if you want to contribute £125 to a pension plan – it only costs £100, this comes from the tax rebate (basic rate tax payer) – you even get the rebate if you do not actually pay tax! This same transaction looked at in another

way means that your £100 contribution has actually grown by 25% immediately – that is a fantastic return in anyone’s book. Other tax benefits for higher rate tax payers (40%) and Additional rate (50%) make the advantages even greater. With expert planning individuals might even benefit from not paying National Insurance contributions on their pension payments, this could be as much as an additional 12% saving. emember the article in July when the “Bloomers” were gearing themselves up for judging on the eighth? I am pleased to let you know that on Tuesday 10 September, Councillor Gary Swan and I went to the Anglia in Bloom Awards held at the Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre in St Albans to represent Whittlesey and learn how we had fared this year. It was very nerve racking to sit through the Special Award categories and see what other towns had been able to pull out of the bag, but it did give us some ideas! I am very pleased to let you know that this year our “lovely country town” (quote from the judges) was awarded a HIGH SILVER certificate for this year’s effort. A Bronze Certificate was also awarded to the Memorial Garden (Station Road) in the Small Parks Category (Parks under 10 acres). The judges’ report does make very pleasant reading and I should like to share this with you. “The pure enthusiasm of the Whittlesey in Bloom team has certainly improved the second year entry of this lovely country town. The links that have been formed particularly with the Sir Harry Smith Community College have certainly paid dividends. The pupils of this school appear to be very happily involved with planting schemes of the many attractive courtyards throughout the school. A further development of note is the work at the allotment site. The extension and division of plots is certainly to be commended, allowing many more local people access to grow their own produce. Many of the Fenland Towns are very fortunate to have access to Street Pride volunteers who very obviously are invaluable in making an impact around the town, particularly with planting many attractive feature schemes. As for the Nature Reserve, this excellent project will no doubt continue to develop to become an even greater asset to this community. Areas of Achievement: The attractive hanging baskets around the town; the volunteer involvement with maintaining the Cemetery; the brilliance of the Jubilee beds; the Memorial Garden with the variety of planting schemes; the Alderman Jacobs school with its excellent Gardening Club and finally the work at the allotment site is to be commended” Of course there are always areas for improvement; “build on the good development

of the Lattersey Nature Reserve, particularly regarding Dog Control and management of Fouling”; isn’t it sad that dog fouling still remains an issue in our town and surrounding areas. The nature reserve does have dog litter bins, PLEASE use them. More Friends of the Reserve are required to help continue maintenance in that area; please don’t be afraid to come forward. Obviously you cannot just go to the Reserve and start doing what you want to do; this must be carried out in conjunction with Fenland District Council and the Wildlife Trust who manage the Reserve. The judges’ report concluded as follows; “Whittlesey should be proud of the improvements undertaken over the last year. This team should congratulate themselves for having taken a great step forward to becoming one of the most improved entries to Anglia in Bloom”. The Whittlesey Bloomers are made up of nine volunteers plus guidance and assistance from the Parks and Gardens team at Fenland District Council. I cannot thank them all enough for what has been achieved in such a short space of time. The Community Pay Back team also assist when “heavy” work is required and our thanks are extended to them also. Meetings are being scheduled to plan where we go from here. This year the Town Council has kindly sponsored the project, however from next year we are to be a stand-alone group and we have already started approaching various groups and businesses for sponsorship. Unfortunately as with most things, no money, no project. Also, no volunteers, no project. We do need more volunteers; last year’s judges’ report commented that “Enthusiasm is in abundance but more involvement by the community is needed”. Those of us already involved are very enthusiastic but extra hands make light work! Our next meeting is scheduled for the evening rather than during the daytime when most people are out at work or at school/college, but unfortunately will have been held by the time you read this, so look out for notices as I will advertise when the next meeting is to be held.
