ust when you thought it couldn’t get any busier, the Discovering team have their best issues to date! We were overwhelmed with positive comments from our launch of Discovering March, and not only have increased pages in our sister magazine, but Whittlesea this month is a bumper 80 pages - that’s the most it has ever been, ever! All this work has meant we have been very busy. I still can’t quite believe I am writing in our November (November!!) issue, where has the year gone! We’ve got the ﬁrst few Christmas articles running this month, including a fabulous alternative recipe from Simon for this year’s festive roast. Featured this issue is the Whittlesey Festival art competition results on page 73, an article following Sir Harry Smith Students who travelled to Peru, advice on how to stay social media safe on page 51, an exclusive with Briggate Garage, and so much more. There is also a full events guide, a really interesting history article on the Must Farm Boats which were discovered recently, and a famous face from the world of television who appeared in Eastrea last month. There really is something for everyone in this November issue, and with next month being our busiest of the year, there is lots to look forward to. LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA Another famous face at Eastrea Julia Bradbury from the BBC 'Countryﬁle' programme was in Eastrea to ﬁlm a documentary featuring Brian J Ford. The programme, entitled 'Mystery Map', will be on ITV next month. Prof Ford is currently appearing in a TV series about his book on the secret weapons of WWII, and also on the Discovery Channel in the 'Unexplained Files' series. Duke of Edinburgh Gold

Peru Adventure

Seven students from Sir Harry Smith Community College are well on the way to gaining their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award after recently returning from a 21 day trip of a lifetime expedition to Peru. All of the Sixth Form students have worked tirelessly through the five demanding sections of the D of E programme over two years, whilst also studying full time for their A levels. For the Expedition element, they organised a three week expedition to Peru. To raise funds for the trip, the students carried out many fundraising activities, including helping with the town’s Round Table Christmas float. They also received a charitable donation from The Whittlesey Charity and the Round Table which helped to make it possible. During the first week in Peru, the Sixth Formers and staff took part in a community project in the Sacred Valley. After a challenging daily hike, they carried out intensive manual labour tasks at altitude, laying an irrigation system at a vital stage to bring water to the remote village. Staying amongst locals, they experienced a totally different culture and environment whilst also sharing our lifestyle, games and traditions with people of Peru, overcoming lots of language barriers along the way. During the second week they successfully 8

completed their 5-day D of E Gold expedition backpacking the Lares Trek in the high Andes, close to 5000m. They walked alongside Glacier Rivers which cut through canyons, and met wild alpacas along the route. Tess Kelly, D and T teacher at the College, praised the students for their organization, planning and preparation for the trip, and their hard work, determination and motivation through the challenges. “It was an absolute pleasure to share this amazing experience with such a fantastic team, and they were a credit to the College”. For the last element of the trip, they travelled by train to the historic site of Machu Picchu, camping at the base of the mountains, before waking early to begin the demanding ascent to the incredible 15th Century Incan site to arrive for sunrise. This ‘Lost City’ sits 2,430 meters above sea level on the eastern slope of the Andes and overlooks the Urubamba River hundreds of feet below.

The students are all planning to return to the College to share their expedition experiences through assemblies later in the year. Community Navigators are local volunteers who know what is going on in their local area and can help guide older people to activities or services which they would enjoy or find useful. We currently have Community Navigators operating successfully in Whittlesey, Chatteris and various villages but we are looking to expand our team to cover all Fenalnd towns and villages. ADave word from Mason When I was appointed Mayor in May of this year I was approached by the press for an arrival statement of my intentions and aspirations and from the response that I gave I was labelled the “Fun and Festival Mayor” I am a great believer in everyone making the best of their recreational time, goodness knows we work hard enough for the best part of our lives and face many difficulties in balancing budgets and bringing up our families! In Whittlesey we have ample opportunity to let our hair down and make the most of our free time. Every January we have the now world famous Straw Bear Festival, revived in the 1980’s by the son of a Durham miner who had moved to the town and reintroduced a nineteenth century festival of street entertainment that had been subsequently banned in 1918 as it was considered to be no more than a form of begging. I refer of course to Brian Kell who for his efforts connected with the Straw Bear Festival was deservedly honoured by Her Majesty The Queen with a British Empire Medal in her Birthday Honours List and it was my great privilege to attend his Investiture Ceremony where I was allowed to read the appropriate citation. This festival now draws thousands of people from all over the world on the second weekend in January to enjoy a variety of dancing, street theatre and music in what otherwise would be a cold and drab part of the year. During the summer we enjoyed the initial “Circuit of the Fens” Cycle Festival and next year this event has been upgraded in the British Cycling Calendar to Category “A” status which should provide extended Press and TV coverage with riders who have competed in Tour De France and Commonwealth Games events in 2014 gracing our streets and highways and providing a much needed boost to our local businesses. We recently enjoyed the sixth Whittlesey Festival which has been widely reported as a great success despite the inclement weather on the day. Ann and I had a tremendous day over seven hours or so in which we attended the many competitions and shows available in the town and joined in the enjoyment of all. My personal thanks go out to all the organisers and sponsors of this magnificent day. I hesitate to mention it but Christmas is just around the corner and another opportunity to enjoy ourselves will arise with the annual Christmas

Extravaganza set against the ever growing display of Christmas Lights in our town which is the result of hard work throughout the year of yet another dedicated group of people on the Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee. So yes, I could be justifiably described as the Mayor of fun and festivals but set against these initiatives a great deal of hard work is being carried out by your Town Councillors and voluntary workers. As my colleague, Cllr. Martin Curtis remarked in his article last month local government can be seen sometimes as being pedantic or slow moving but that is because great care is being exercised in making sure that your local Town Council does its very best for the people of Whittlesey and the surrounding villages. By now you will all know that the Tesco appeal against the decision to grant permission for Sainsbury to build a superstore in conjunction with light industrial units and a country park at Eastrea Road has been withdrawn freeing up the way forward for these much needed facilities to be provided. The proposed bridge over the railway line at Kings Dyke has secured sufficient funding to bring that project into play within three years and discussions are on going to improve the amenities at Whittlesea railway station and to bring al fresco dining to the Buttercross. What a great place Whittlesey is to live in and whilst we might have our share of fun and festivals we certainly do not lag behind when it comes to providing improved facilities for our citizens. Finally, thank you to those people who have responded to my appeal to comment on the bus services in and around the town. This is an issue close to my heart and I assure you that every effort will be made to press the bus contractors for as many improvements as are practicable within Cambridgeshire County Council restraints.

Whittlesea Street Pride this year have held 33 clean up events, not only in our town, but we include Coates, Eastrea and Turves. We have looked at Pondersbridge, but fortunately it did not require a full team. We have collected in excess of 350 Big/Full bags of litter/rubbish and small fly-tipped materials. This equates to some 3,000 Kgs of litter and rubbish. Our group have devoted/volunteered nearly 900 hours of their time. We are very proud of what we have achieved year after year. Naturally, we are a pro-active group, not a reactive force, we will respond to issues should it be necessary, we have a good system in place to know where and how to deal with minor environmental issues…see below.

Recently on an event along the Thorney Road, we went along one of the side lanes to find ‘someone’ had fly-tipped 6 very large barrels, very heavy, full of bluish and yellow fine powdery material. This type of fly-tipping is not safe for us to deal with - especially if we do not know ‘what’ the material may be. It was reported to the statutory body (Fenland District Council) within 2 hours, it was at the same time reported to the Police. No feedback was received from anyone; the material/barrels were still there 4 days later. To date there are still 2 of the barrels there with (2) piles of power besides the lane. After a lot of chasing around, I was informed that officials had ‘looked’ at the situation the Monday after it had been reported. The materials were deemed not hazardous? and responsibility was placed on the landowners (RSPB & Wildfowlers) to remove the materials.

The type of situation above, does not instil confidence in a group like ours. We try our best to do our bit, but when no feedback is received, materials unknown remain in place for many days and in this case weeks after being reported. This is very unsatisfactory to say the least. We maintain our argument of the ‘What if?’ situation – What if the material was proven to be more sinister than it was?….near a water course, besides/close to a public right of way, passing animals etc….. I sincerely hope the next time such a report is made; it is dealt with in a much more timely manner. Finally a brief update on our Ramsey Road project – we hope to start/finish the project by late October….more next month. Father Christmas In 2003 Gina and John Ferridge decided to collect donations for their Christmas Lights display in Arnold's Lane, Whittlesey. That year they collected over £200 which they donated to the charity 'Children with Leukaemia' (now 'Children with Cancer UK' ) in memory of their son Nick who had died of the disease aged eight. The switch on this year takes place on Saturday 30th November at 5 pm and by popular demand the Alderman Jacobs School Choir will be singing carols prior to the switch on which will be performed by cast from the Key Theatre's Pantomime, Cinderella, who will be joined by Father Christmas, Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman. This is the 10th anniversary of that first switch on and if £200 is raised on the night that will take the total amount collected to over £20k which has all been donated to the charity Father Christmas has said that although he will be very busy, he will be returning to us on Sunday 15th December at 4.30 pm through to 6 pm If you are unable to make it on the night the lights will be switched on daily from 4.30 pm til 9.00 pm through to 1st January 2014.

“

THE MONTH

A great alternative to turkey on the xmas table is Cockeral, Amazing Simon Norris, ﬂavour, succulent J Jones Butchers and juicy.

Ingredients:

150g packet garlic and herb Boursin cheese; 1 clove garlic, crushed; 25g unsalted and shelled pistachio nuts, chopped grated rind and juice of ½ lemon; 1 tbsp fresh chopped sage; 4kg cockerel; 8 rashers smoked streaky bacon; olive oil; 4 tbsp sherry; 400 ml good chicken stock or vegetable juices

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. 2. Mix together the cheese, garlic, pistachios, lemon rind and juice, sage and seasoning until well combined. 3. Place the cockerel on a board and carefully ease your ﬁngers under the skin of the cockerel at the neck end freeing it from the breast meat. Smear the cheese mixture over the breast meat under the skin. Then tuck the ﬂap of skin underneath. 4. Arrange the bacon over the breast and drizzle over oil and season. Place in a large roasting tin and cover with foil. Calculate the cooking time allowing 16 minutes per 450g plus another 16 minutes or until the juices run clear from the thigh when pierced with a knife or skewer. Remove the foil for the last 45 minutes to allow the cockerel to brown. 5. Remove the cockerel from the oven and transfer to a warm serving plate. Cover with foil and allow to rest for 20-30 minutes. 6. Meanwhile skim most of the fat from the roasting pan and discard. Scrape the meat juices in the pan together. Place over a low heat and blend in sherry and stock. Bring to the boil, stirring and season to taste. Serve the gravy with the Cockerel.

The Must Farm Boats

y Uncles, Jim and Fred Smith and their families, lived and worked at Must farm, Kings Dyke. I spent many enjoyable summer holidays helping to gather in the harvest, leading the horse drawn loaded carts to the stockyard and then assisting my father in thatching the completed stacks. Little did we realise what was lying under our feet!! The fact that Hanson UK needed to excavate the ground in preparation for removing the blue clay to manufacture bricks, lead to an intact Prehistoric riverside being discovered, with spectacular results. The Cambridgeshire Archaeological Unit, working with the cooperation of Hanson, has unearthed eight boats, hollowed from huge oak logs and varying in length from 4 metres to almost 9 metres. A removable transom was inserted at the back to replace heartwood in the log which was liable to rot. The removal of this transom would have allowed the boat to be submerged in water to preserve its life and make it more difficult to steal! Depth gauges incised on the side enabled the boatmen to see if it was overloaded. The gauges were not the only markings as a series of crude crosses adorned the boats both inside and out as decoration. Hard to believe, but the end of the boat contained a hearth for a fire to keep the boatmen warm as they went about their business. It would appear that these vessels were propelled either by paddles or poles and were the workhorses of the river. The boats recovered did not sink accidently. They appear to have been scuttled as the rear transoms had been removed. These boats were sunk individually from about 1300BC to 700BC on a well managed watercourse rich in fish and eels caught in the wicker fishing traps that were revealed by the excavations. Over time the river became silted up, the latest boat unearthed was 1.3 metres above the earliest one. The landscape changed with flooding and the formation of peat bogs forcing the human inhabitants to seek higher ground, having built timber platforms with their timber houses supported on oak piles to try to preserve the lifestyle they knew. A fire in 500BC caused the artefacts to sink rapidly in the peaty Fen waters and deposits of silt and peat has helped to preserve the Archaeology. Other Archaeology finds, well preserved, have been swords, spears, clothing, jewellery as well as carved bowls and pots still full of food. This is

one of the most significant sites of its kind ever found in Britain â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and it is on our doorstep! The boats have now been moved into a specially erected refrigeration unit in Flag Fen. They will undergo a two year conservation process, using the same techniques first used on the Mary Rose Tudor warship, being sprayed with wax to stabilise them and stop the timber from degrading. The building to house them was funded by English Heritage and visitors can view them through glass during regular guided tours.

POLICING YOUR AREA The Whittlesey Festival this year saw some harsh weather but what a turn out, and in my view was a success. The team and I enjoyed being part of it, a long day but well worth the effort. Our special recruitement stand also saw a high volume of visitors all seeking further information…. This month we had a visit from Nicola Fenton an outreach worker employed by the Police Crime Commissioner. Having little knowledge of the area and community I gave her a tour on foot visiting businesses, council offices,schools and of course speaking to the community. Nicola was impressed by the area and the how well the police engage with the community and work together to solve issues and prevent them! Crime this month has seen no real patterns or trends, we have suffered isolated cases of a variety of incidents but think we are getting in the right places to avoid repeat offending. Diesel theft has been relatively low after the arrest of one person in the Peterborough area, and burglaries have decreased from previous months, which

is pleasing to see. There have been two very significant Cannabis Cultivations found in the area and closed down. Although no offenders have yet been brought to justice for these, a massive quantity of drugs has been removed from the streets to a street value of over two million pounds….Anti social behaviour saw issues raised around our local churches and some play areas. We have increased our activity here and advised some persons on their behaviour which has resulted in less incidents to occurr. Officers have, and will continue to attend schools to watch parking and we will be working with one school to try to raise awareness of this and speeding, which through consultation was the communities main concern. So we will try and tackle this issue over the next coming months. To find out what the team is up to check out our facebook page, its not all serious we try and add items of entertainment! The early part of November will see predator anglers from right across the country descending on Whittlesey for this year’s Angling Trust/Angling Times British Pike Championship. The match, which will see the best of the countries pike and zander men lining the Whittlesey drains have had to qualify for the privilege of fishing this massive event which takes place on Saturday 16th November, with the draw at the Manor Leisure Centre. Thankfully for local residents the draw gets underway very early so there should be very little disruption to the community, but I know the police have been advised and anglers will have been informed to park sensibly for the short time they will be in the area on the big day. Expectations are high that we will once again see some big fish taken with the Whittlesey Twenty Foot Drain the main centre of attention. Still on the pike fishing theme, the Whittlesey junior section have started their winter campaign of matches, unfortunately it did not get off to a great start with very few youngsters taking part. However one angler that had a day to remember was Reece Giddens a local lad from Turves, I think he’s 11 years old. Reece came to the junior pike matches last year but sadly he didn’t catch anything, but Reece hasn’t done much pike fishing but is very keen to learn and give it ago. The picture attached is Reece’s first pike and this personal best of 11lb 6oz was caught on one of WAA fenland drains on a free roaming fish bait. Considering this was his first big fish he caught he did really well to play and land it. Match organiser Gareth Dewdney even gave him the chance to fish with

his new pike rod. Gareth comented “ the small turnout gave me the chance to show him how to handle and unhook the pike, adding, I think I just need to find a few more enthusiastic juniors like Reece to fish the pike matches arranged for this year. November is a really good time to fish our local waters with the tiny, but very popular Whittlesey Dyke one of the best venues to head for. Upstream of Ashline Sluice you can expect skimmers roach and perhaps even a chub or two while downstream is full of small fish with occasional bream and big perch the main targets.

Whittlesey Christian Church Events Not To Be Missed

I know it’s a scary thought, but Christmas will soon be on us. With this in mind I found myself thinking about the real message that is at the heart of Christmas – this can be wrapped up in one word ‘giving’ From the moment I experienced a very powerful and meaningful encounter with Christ as a mixed up young man in my late teens, I’ve had a growing passion to reflect the ‘giving’ life of the Christ. Over the years many have asked me why we don’t consider making a small charge for attending our ‘Little Angels’ groups through the week, or for the tea and goodies at the over 50’s ‘Pastime’. Two reasons stop us doing this; the first is that for many even a small charge would be enough to stop them being able to come. The second is that from the moment we opened the church some 17 years ago, our driving passion has been to follow the example of Christ and ‘give’ to this community, by keeping as many activities as possible ‘free’ I am privileged to Pastor a congregation who willingly do everything within their power to help achieve these things. While we have no intention of ramming God down anyone’s throat, neither do we want to fail to make this community aware of how incredible the giving heart of God is. We may not have all the answers to the ‘why’ of life’s challenges, but we have proved that in our hour of need God is always ready to give us the strength to work through those challenges. Last year we held an incredibly successful ‘Easter

Fayre’ where everyone not only enjoyed themselves but were also amazed to find everything free – This year you will not want to miss our great 2013 Christmas Fayre Date: Saturday 30th Nov Time: 10.00 - 1pm Location: Whittlesey Christian Church, Broad Street A host of things will be happening - Play Station driving competition, crafts, games, activities and free tea & coffee to name just a few things. On a very wet and windy Sunday morning myself and my family went to Peterborough embankment to watch my wife (Debbie Peters) and Thorney running club in the GER 2013. When we got to the Embankment we met up with the club members outside of the Lido and had the team photo taken by Free Angle Photography. On the Embankment there were various stalls selling there wares and Heart FM doing a great job of warming people up and keeping people entertained, despite the Embankment slowly turning in to a mud bath with the amount of people there. I was really surprised by the amount of support from the general public, cheering people on all around the course despite the dreadful weather - this showed the true spirit of this event and the people of Peterborough The organisers did a fantastic job of marshalling the course with over 5,200 people entering the half marathon and over 1,600 entering the fun run Thorney running club had over 50 members running in both the fun run and the half marathon with all completing the races. The members come from Whittlesey, Thorney and surrounding areas and are a family orientated club who welcome new members of all abilities, from beginner to the experienced. hen your garden is winding down for its winter rest there are still jobs to do and ways to make the bleaker seasons more attractive. It is a time for taking stock, clearing out and planning for the seasons to come. It may seem like everything dies back in winter but as the garden enters its dormant phase, it’s still possible to create areas of interest and colour. • Dig up annuals and cut back perennials. Plants that flourished and looked stunning during the summer are well past their best now. Annuals, the plants that only last one season, need to be dug up and thrown away. Perennials are plants that spring up year after year from the roots, so these need to be cut back. Refresh the garden by digging out new beds and borders and replace plants that have succumbed to the season. There are a few hardy little souls that will flourish at this time of the year. • Cyclamens come in white and a range of pinks and reds and add a welcome dash of vibrancy in the depths of winter. • Pansies and their miniature cousin’s violas are a favourite and do especially well in a sunny spot. Flat Head Syndrome

By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Mistry (Registered Osteopaths) We see a lot of babies with this type of condition in our practice. So we thought it would be useful to give parents a simple overview of the subject to help parents who aren’t sure what to do. There are a number of different types of misshapen heads that are frequently grouped together and referred to as ‘flat head syndrome’. We are going to discuss positional plagiocephaly as this is the most common and usually preventable. Plagiocepahly is when there is a flattening at the back of one side of the head. With a more marked plagiocephaly there is a flatness present but also the ears may seem misaligned and one side of the forehead may bulge. It is called positional plagicephaly because the position that the baby’s head lays on is a significant factor in the development of this kind of misshapen head. Things to look out for that may warn you that your baby is more vulnerable to developing this condition: Is your baby turning their head to one side more than the other? When your baby is lying down, do they looked slightly ‘banana shaped’ to one side? Does your baby find it more difficult to breastfeed from one side? Does one side of the back of your baby’s head appear flatter? Advice to help your baby develop a good balanced neck mobility and prevent your baby developing a flat head on one side. 1) Positioning - When your baby falls asleep you could gently turn his or her head to face the other way. In the car seat put a rolled up muslin on the side your baby tends to turn or lean to give support. 2) Bottle feeding - Ensure you are feeding your baby in alternate arms. 3) Breastfeeding - positioning is not such a worry in this case. But if your baby has a tight neck it may be they will have difficulty latching making feeding painful on one side. I would suggest getting your baby checked by a cranial osteopath as releasing the neck may make a big difference. 4) Playing - Encourage your baby to look away from the side they prefer by talking, singing and playing with your baby from the other side. 5) Tummy time - This allows your baby’s head to have a break from having constant pressure on the back of their heads. You can start placing your baby on their tummy from birth. A good time to do this is when they are awake and not too tired or hungry. Little and often is the best way to start. Cranial osteopathy If you are concerned about your baby’s head or neck a baby check with a cranial osteopath can help identify why your baby is not moving their head correctly. It is a very gentle treatment that aims to help restore balance and mobility in a baby so that they are starting life with a good foundation. Ubhi is a paediatric osteopath at Whittlesey Osteopaths. Pacific Rim Pacific Rim is the 2013 American science fiction monster film directed by Guillermo del Toro, written by del Toro and Travis Beacham, and starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman. The film is set in the 2020s, when Earth is at war with the Kaijus, colossal monsters which have emerged from an interdimensional portal on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. To combat the monsters, humanity unites to create the Jaegers: gigantic humanoid mecha, each controlled by two pilots whose minds are joined by a neural bridge. Focusing on the war’s later days, the story follows Raleigh Becket, a washed-up Jaeger pilot called out of retirement and teamed with rookie pilot Mako Mori as part of a last-ditch effort to defeat the Kaijus. Pacific Rim is an earnest, colorful adventure story. Director, Guillermo del Toro, focused on big, beautiful and sophisticated visuals, with action that would satisfy both adults and children alike and what he managed to create was a gripping film which would wow both audiences and critics. A good starting point would be to obtain Power of Attorney so that you can act for the individual for either or both areas of concern – their wellbeing and their financial affairs. It is important that any such arrangements are put on a proper legal footing, firstly in case things go wrong but just as importantly, data protection legislation can easily get in the way of well intentioned help. For example – it would be quite wrong of a bank or building society to discuss an individual’s financial affairs with anyone that was not legally entitled to ask for it, and the medical profession could not discuss medication, treatment or a prognosis with someone who has no right to the information. In my work as a later life adviser, much of the problem is not finding the services required, it is the paying for them. Some clients are ‘Asset Rich – Cash Poor’. This simply means that their income is not enough to afford the higher level of expenditure associated with long term care. However, sometimes they have a property that could yield funds – they just need a key with which to unlock it!

LOCAL NEWS IN YOUR AREA The Railway Pub Raise £1,622 for Macmillan Cancer Support in one evening!

The local Macmillan Cancer Support team came along to collect the cheque at a presentation last weekend at The Railway Inn in Whittlesey. The fantastic donation was raised from a charity day the pub held on Sunday 28th July in memory of a Local Lady Dianne Adams. Landlady Kerrie said – “The Charity day was a great success, not only did everyone really enjoy themselves but we also managed to raise money for a good cause. Diane was a local lady & a customer here at the Railway – She was loved by so many people & has been deeply missed by us all. I would like to Thank Ron Oliver, Gary Pacey & Della Singer as well as everyone who joined in to make the day such a success and Special Thanks to Diane’s Husband Guy & her daughter Sarah.” Pauline Craig the local fundraising manager for Macmillan Cancer Support said: “We are delighted to accept this fantastic cheque from the pub, donations such as these mean we are able to continue to support local people affected by cancer. Macmillan Cancer Support provides help in so many ways from our Macmillan nurses, to the ﬁnancial grants that we can offer to people who are struggling to cope with the cost of cancer. The Railway Inn do so much for charity and I know this event meant a lot to everyone involved as it was in memory of Diane. The event sounds like such great fun and we are really grateful to everyone who came along and supported this fantastic evening.” Cancer is the toughest ﬁght most of us will ever face. Hi everyone. Well here we are after our sixth Whittlesey Festival and what a great day. Despite the weather not being very kind to us, the Whittlesey people turned out to support us as they always do. We were fortunate to have both the Mayor of Whittlesey Councillor David Mason and his wife Ann, the Lady Mayoress to open and close the Festival; they also presented prizes for the Art and Baby Competitions during the day. I hope you all enjoyed the extra musical entertainment we put on for you this year. David Bailey & Jon-Paul Parker did an amazing job in organising this for us and I would like to thank them for the work they did both during the year and on the day. We were so lucky to get a fantastic triple flypast by a Hurricane and a Spitfire, which was a little earlier than expected because of the possible change in the weather, but as usual we were all ready for them with music and flags. The Art Competition was exceptional again this year; we really do have some very talented youngsters in all our Whittlesey schools. It was very disappointing that the Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers had to pull out at the last minute as so many people were looking forward to seeing them, also unfortunately some of activities were curtailed due to the weather. Regardless of these setbacks I still think the day was a great success. I would like to thank the Festival Committee for all the hard work they put in during the year and on the day. I would also like to thank Brian Smithyman and the Whittlesey Christian Church team who give us so much support. A special thank you to Mike Chapman (Fenland Markets & Events Manager) for his dedication to the Festival. Finally I would like to thank the residents of Whittlesey along with their families and friends for their continued support this year and I hope to see you all again at our 7th Whittlesey Festival to be held on Sunday 7th September 2014. I am sorry for the delay in thanking you all but as the Festival was later this year, I just missed the deadline for October. Come on down to the Manor Leisure Centre on 17 November for what is sure to be a very enjoyable day out, and make sure you bring along your friends and families too! A showcase of Talent

aving the schools involved in the Whittlesey Festival is an exciting aspect to the day and this year on 15th September was no exception with many entries for the Festival Schools Art competition. Anyone who visited the exhibition on the day at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street could not help but be impressed by the superb display of art and crafts submitted by local children and students. Primary schools New Road, Alderman Jacobs, Park Lane and Coates together with secondary school Sir Harry Smith Community College all did themselves proud as the standard of work submitted was absolutely superb. This year we introduced a visitors comments book and judging by the feedback which included comments such as ‘a fantastic display of the talents of Whittlesey children – well done to all’, ‘a lot of real talent here, congratulations’ it was evident that those who came to the exhibition were impressed too. Prizes were awarded by the Mayor of Whittlesey Councillor David Mason on the day. The winners were as follows:

There was such an interesting variety of themes and techniques used and it was evident that everyone who entered had worked very hard which made it very difﬁcult for the judges to select the ﬁnal winners. We consider everyone who took part to be a winner and we look forward to even greater things next year.
