s it really March already? It’s a cliche to say that time seems to run quicker the older you get, but I’m actually starting to really believe it. Next month I’m going to be planning Dylan’s first birthday (mummy’s out there will be understanding when I say that I’m feeling emotional at the thought of his first birthday). Until then, however, we have lots of exciting things to look forward to, including the grand unveiling of the Whittlesey Christian Chucrh, for which I am honoured to be attending. Last month I attended the open day of the Whittlesey Amateur Boxing Club. Although going for many years, the Whittlesey ABC have recently moved to a brand new building in Aaron Industrial Estate (just past the railway station). It’s a great club, where youngsters and adults alike are welcome. More information on the club can be found on page 10. Lots of you will remember the great Circuit of the Fens, which saw our streets lined with cyclists from far and wide. Although a great success, organisers received feedback that there wasn’t enough information leading up to the event. As a result, this year we will be printing lots of information in the magazine, the first part of which is on page 25. As part of the 70th anniversary of D-Day, this month we have a special feature on The British Legion. To mark the occasion, there will be a special evening of 1940s music, held on the 7th June at the Manor Leisure Centre. Tickets are available from Wally on 01733 351055 and more information can be found on page 33. The month of March is of course a special one for the mummies out there, and so I’d like to say a very special thank you to the two ladies in my life. Thank you Theresa and Val. Best mummies and nannies in the whole world (pictured above). Thank you also to Lesley Elding for sending this month’s front cover - the floods might cause havoc for our commute, but the wash looks beautiful in this picture!

Whittlesey Junior Warriors Netball Club is born... Back in 2010 Whittlesey Warriors Netball Club was formed and has grown in numbers and success, we currently have our 2 seniors teams playing regularly play in the Wisbech Netball League in Division 2 and 3. On June 18th 2013 we decided to set up a junior section to our club, giving girls from year 7 upwards somewhere to continue there love of netball outside of school. Three senior members of the Warriors,Mel Barkess,Julia Dunmore and Alison Briggs took on the task of setting up the Junior Club , and with the help of Janette Bowden from England Netball, Whittlesey Junior Warriors was born. The first evening saw a fantastic turn out of 30 young ladies, this has reduced now to a very regular and committed 16 ladies, that are now experiencing the joys of training from 6-7pm on a Tuesday at Sir Harry Smiths in some very chilly conditions. However these ladies are very dedicated, and have and continue to improve with every session they attend.They have shown their commitment by affiliating to England Netball and are starting to have friendly matches with other local teams. A brand new playing kit funded by Sport Active and provided by Hereward Teamwear and Trophies, will soon make our Juniors the smartest ladies around,and we would like to thank Ady at Hereward again for all his continued support. We have been very lucky in securing sponsorship again with Simon Norris of “Jones the Butchers”, who already sponsors our Senior teams by providing us with kit bags, and has now agreed to do the same again for our Juniors....Thank You . So if any young lady from year 7 onwards who would like to come and join us on a Tuesday evening 6 – 7 pm and has an ability and love of playing netball please contact Mel Barkess at melbarkess@gmail.com for more details. Parish boundary changes under review

Residents are being asked to say what they think about possible changes to existing parish boundaries in Chatteris, Manea and Whittlesey. Fenland District Council is reviewing what changes may be needed to ensure those boundaries truly reflect the identities and interests of local people and are effective and convenient for them. The detailed “community governance review” will also consider the number of councillors needed to serve each of the parishes. The review’s overall aim is to strengthen local democracy and encourage more community engagement. It has to take into account the identity of each area and consider the impact that any new arrangements would have on their communities. It involves a two-part consultation. The first stage was launched on January 15 and will run for three months until April 15. Subsequently, the council will publish its draft proposals which will be presented to its annual meeting on May 9. It will then hold a further eight-week consultation before publishing its final proposals in July. Any changes will need to be approved by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England. The new arrangements will come into force at the next all-out parish council elections in May 2015. The review will be overseen by a Members Working Group made up of Councillors Alan Melton and Chris Seaton, FDC’s leader and deputy leader, and Cllrs Gavin Booth, Mark Archer and Virginia Bucknor. > For more details, including maps of the areas affected, visit www.fenland.gov.uk/article/8190/. Primary schools join to make Whittlesea Learning Trust Park Lane Primary and Nursery School and New Road Primary School have joined together to form Whittlesea Learning Trust. The Whittlesea Learning Trust will guide the direction of both schools and provide wider learning opportunities for its pupils. By joining the Trust each school leaders have more control over their budgets and allows them to adapt their curriculum to better meet the needs of their pupils. The schools will remain as two individual schools with their own character, staff, governing bodies and funding. The partnership provides the schools with a way to work more closely together, pooling resources and expertise to benefit both schools. Both schools have already been working closely together as a soft federation since January 2013. The formation of the Trust unites the schools’ commitment to this partnership for the future. Margaret Leverett, Headteacher of Whittlesea Learning Trust, will oversee the running of both schools. Mrs Leverett was appointed as Headteacher at Park Lane in September 2012 and became Headteacher at both schools in January 2013. She said: “The partnership between Park Lane and New Road is already very strong and the pupils regularly work together on projects that enhance their learning. “The formation of the Trust will bring about minimal noticeable change to parents and the local

community – both schools will maintain their own identity and personalities. “However, behind the scenes, it will allow us to make better use of our budgets and curriculum – pooling resources and identifying areas in each school that require additional support to boost levels of achievement. The pupils will also work closely with their peers on projects which provide them with wider opportunities to enhance their learning. A Head of School will become the day-to-day contact for parents at each school. Wendy Seaford has become the Head of School at Park Lane and Stuart Mallott is the Head of School at New Road. They will also sit on the Board of Trustees which comprises leaders and governors from both schools. Mr Mallott added: “Whittlesey is a very lucky place to have so many schools working together to help raise standards across the town. “The next step in the Trust’s journey is to create our logo. The pupils at Park Lane and New Road will work together to create the main idea. The final version will then be produced by graphic design pupils at Sir Harry Smith.” March 2014| Discovering

Whittlesey Amateur Boxing Club A bright new future for Whittlesey ABC, the club for all ages, Whittlesey ABC have now moved to a newer bigger premises Photographs and words: Martin Peters Chairman Jon King explained that he opened the club because of a love of boxing and because Whittlesey was in need of something for all ages and abilities under one roof. The good thing about the club is that you can come down for 30 minutes or four hours it doesn’t matter. The club, which runs classes for children and adults on various days of the week, has a Facebook group where further details can be found. The club has all the usual facilities you would expect in a gym, plus a boxing ring and punch bags. Gloves are also available. I would just like to bring to many peoples attention the speed limit on North Bank. While 40mph may be a little over cautious (50mph would have been a more realistic speed) there are still a few people travelling at 60 - 70 mph. I travel this stretch of road 5/7 times a week and see this happen on a regular basis. It is stupid and disrespectful to the poor people who have lost their lives on this road. ADave word from Mason My three year old grandson, Thomas, asked me the other day “Grandad, when is it going to snow?” I had no immediate answer but by the time you read this article there may well be the white covering on the ground and Thomas will be in his element building a snowman in his back garden. It did, however, trigger my thinking into just why it hadn’t snowed this winter and the obvious answer is that the weather patterns have changed considerably in this part of the world. The cold north winds which bring our snow from the Arctic Circle as the cold air collides with warmer air further south have been repelled by the persistent and at times violent south westerly winds and currents crossing the Atlantic, causing havoc by bringing excessive rain, particularly to the west and south west coasts. How those poor people in the West Country have suffered this winter. The pictures on the television of the floods remind me of the B1040 between Whittlesey and Ramsey but infinitely worse! It does remind us all yet again that we have an increasingly serious problem on our hands when we consider the wash lands and flood plain to the north of our town and the absolute necessity of dissuading any housing developments in this area. When I was at school physics wasn’t exactly my favourite subject but I do remember something about Archimedes’ Principle and the displacement of water - “Eureka” I can hear someone say!! The River Nene is continuing to ship additional water from its banks, partly from the extra volume being encouraged up stream by neighbouring authorities but also due to dredging not being carried out by The Environment Agency which could result in up to 40% more water being retained in the river itself. Please rest assured that we at Whittlesey Town Council will lobby the necessary authorities on this issue. As I indicated in the last issue, the developers involved in the two proposed housing estates to be built at the rear of Glenfields and Showfields respectively have demanded an independent review after being refused planning permission. I have asked that each submission be heard separately and in a suitable location in Whittlesey so that our electorate can again have first hand knowledge of the issues. The erection of masses of concrete on the north side of Whittlesey to facilitate housing and associated infrastructure is in my opinion sheer madness and must continue to be resisted. Associated with the problems of the flooding on the north side of Whittlesey are the extreme traffic problems experienced by townsfolk travelling to and from Peterborough on the A605. Whilst I fully sympathise with all concerned please be assured that after 40 years of intermittent negotiation funding

is finally in place to build a bridge over the railway at Kings Dyke which will eventually speed up essential journeys along this route. Cllr Martin Curtis, not only as a Whittlesey Town Councillor but also as Leader of Cambridgeshire County Council, has worked tremendously hard to move this project forward and as you have seen from his articles in past issues of this publication initial surveys are underway, please continue to be patient. When speaking of travel to and from Peterborough for purposes of employment I know that many of you have been increasingly frustrated with the lack of buses on the A605 and particularly if you should happen to work beyond 6.40 in the evening. In January 2012 Cambridgeshire County Council embarked on a three year plan intended to reduce funding to bus contractors in Cambridgeshire from £2.72 million a year to £1.50 million a year. Obviously this wasn’t going to improve services but just the opposite, it would mean a gradual reduction in services and this is something we as a community can ill afford. In order to engage with the public and consider their views a Transport Questionnaire has been produced by Cambridgeshire County Council which can be found by accessing www. cambridgeshire.gov.uk/cft under the heading of “Cambridgeshire Future Transport”. All responses have to be submitted by the end of March 2014. Having attended meetings on this subject I am confident that I have a solution that will not only repel the withdrawal of services to and from Whittlesey but if implemented will extend services to Coates, Eastrea and Turves with the possible addition of an extra service beyond 6.40 in the evening, at the same time saving money for Cambridgeshire County Council. Sounds too good to be true? It isn’t but I do need your support in filling out the questionnaire to support this initiative. Boat donated to StreetPride Already it is time to start our maintenance program for 2014. Painting the plough at Coates and Plough road, applying preserver to all the wood work that supports our many projects throughout Whittlesey and surrounding areas, tidying the rose garden, and maintaining the many flower and plant areas that we look after. Cleaning the ravages of winter from the paintwork and generally tidying the gateway projects. We are scheduled to install towards the middle of March at the Ramsey Road gateway an environmentally friendly plastic picnic bench, installing 4 cycle storage hoops and an additional waste bin, set in a concrete base that complies with the Council installation specifications. The Whittlesey Streetpride members and committee wish to thank Whittlesey Engineering for their support with security engineering metal work for this project, and the Easterbrook family of Whittlesey for kindly donating a boat to be used as a replacement when one of our current boat

gateway projects expires. Nick Easterbrook made the boat, which is in excellent condition and will give us many years service as a flowerbed.

The YDC’s great grants giveaway Coming soon, for one evening only: the Fenland Youth District Council’s great grants giveaway The YDC is holding an extraordinary meeting on March 19 at which it hopes to be able to hand out a grand total of £5,000 to help young people throughout the district. Half of its £10,000 grants budget for 2013/14 is still in the kitty, available for distribution before the end of March. So it is inviting youth groups and organisations that work with young people to apply for a share of that money – and urging them to get their applications in without delay. Here are the details of the plan. · There is £5,000 available, with £1,000 as the maximum grant · Applications must be received by Monday, March 10, using the amended grant application form available at www.fenland.gov.uk/ article/3184/ · Applicants will be notified by no later than March 14 if their application will be considered · Applicants will be offered the chance to give a short talk / presentation (no more than five minutes) on the evening, but it will not prejudice their application if they decline the offer · Applicants will be informed of the YDC's decision after all grants have been heard and assessed. They are welcome to stay until this decision has been made. Tea and coffee will be provided. · All successful applicants must complete their project within six months rather than the usual time limit of 12 months. Cllr Steve Garratt, Fenland District Council’s Cabinet member responsible for the YDC, said: “I’m always impressed by our young councillors’ ability to come up with really imaginative ideas and this special grant giving meeting is another example of that. “The grant scheme has been hugely popular over the years. I hope youth groups will jump at this opportunity and make March 19 an exciting and rewarding evening.” The organisations that have already received YDC grants in this financial year are: C4 Basketball, March Town Cricket Club, March Marlins, Manea & Chatteris Youth Club, Girls Venture Corp Air Cadets (Wisbech), 20Twenty Productions, 1220 (March) Squadron Air Training and Estover Park under-16s girls football team. The 2014 / 2015 grant scheme will open in April, and will operate as usual.

A popular favourite, especially during the cold winter months. I make my filling in Simon Norris, advance, then add J Jones Butchers to the pastry bowls as you need them

”

Steak and Kidney Pudding For The Filling:

250g lean beef stewing steak, cut into small pieces (this portion is per pudding); 100g beef kidney, cut into small pieces; 2 tsp vegetable oil; 2 leeks, trimmed and sliced; 200g swede, peeled and cubed; 175g carrots, peeled and thickly sliced; 2 tsp plain flour; 300ml beef stock

For The Pastry Bowls:

2 small slices wholemeal bread, about 50g; 150g self-raising flour; ½ tsp dried thyme; 100g ‘light’ shredded vegetable suet

Instructions:

1. Heat a non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Add the beef and fry, stirring occasionally, for 4 minutes until browned on all sides. Transfer to a bowl, add the kidney and set aside. 2. In the same pan, heat a tbsp of oil, then add the leeks. Stir, then cover and cook gently for 4 minutes until starting to soften. Stir in the swede and carrots, cover and cook for a further 4 minutes until lightly browned. 3. Add the beef and kidney and season to taste, then add the flour and toss well to coat. Pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Simmer for 2 minutes, then remove from the heat and set aside. 4. To make the pastry bowls, tear the bread into pieces and put into a food processor. Pulse 3-4 times to turn into fine crumbs. Add the flour, thyme and suet and season with a little salt and pepper. Pulse again to combine, and pour in 4–6 tbsp cold water to form a soft dough. 5. Constables Grass

rom time immemorial, well before the passing of the Whittlesey Inclosure Act of 1840, the Constables of Whittlesey had certain rights and interests over the open common fields of the Town. They had to provide and keep two bulls for the use of the Commoners cows. By the Inclosure Award of 1844, three parcels of grazing land situated at Lattersey Hill, on the right hand side between the main road and the river, containing just over 19 acres were awarded to the then four constables of Whittlesey to provide for their commitments. Hence Constables Grass. The Constables at this time were William Aveling, John Ground the Younger, Thomas Smith the Younger and Robert Todd. A 12 foot right of way over the land was created along Whittlesey Dyke for the hauling of boats. It was usual for the Constables to let their land and divide the rent received between themselves. The Tenant then took over the provision of the two bulls, but the responsibility remained with the Constables. To ensure the bulls were of sufficient pedigree, the Jurors of the Court Leet of the Manors of Whittlesey appointed bull approvers, who from time to time inspected the bulls to ensure the Commoners interest was looked after. From about the turn of the 20th century, the Quarter Sessions did not deem it necessary to appoint Constables and did not issue any precept to the Overseers. Times were not so good and rent was not being paid for the land but the Tenant was still obligated to keep the two bulls. The Court Leet then authorised him to make a charge for the service of the bulls. Many years ago the Constables let the land to Mr. Richard Hemmaway who died in 1935 aged about 90, but before his death he had transferred the tenancy of the land to his son Thomas Griffin Hemmaway. The Law of Property Act of 1925 abolished Copyhold tenure and the Jurors and the Court Leet ceased to exist so there was no one left to administer the management of the land. In 1941 John Bowker, in his capacity as Steward of the Manors of Whittlesey, wrote to the Charity Commissioners to enquire whether they were prepared to formulate a Scheme to manage the land under

Charity status. After protracted correspondence, in which H.M. Inspector of Taxes became involved and Mr. Hemmaway gave up his tenancy, the Charity Commissioners decided that it was appropriate for them to establish a Scheme. The application for the Scheme would have to be made to them by the Urban District Council and two prominent citizens of the Town. The application was duly signed by Mr. H. Kewish of the Urban District Council, Thomas Searle of Claygate House, farmer and John Weldon Bowker of the Elms, solicitor. The Scheme appointed the Trustees of the Town Lands Education and Eleemosynary Charities to administer the land. Any net income from the letting should be used for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Town. The Hamlet of Coates was excluded from the scheme as they had their own Constable. All the Town Lands Charities were amalgamated into the newly formed Whittlesey Charity in 1990.

Lent 2014

Wednesday 5th March is Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent which is the season of the church’s year when we take the chance to look at ourselves and our relationship with God in Jesus. Throughout Lent there will be opportunities in all churches to help you use this time to prepare for Holy Week and Easter. In St Mary’s on each Friday in Lent at 12 noon we will have the Stations of the Cross, also known as The Way of the Cross. Those who have attended in past years have either been familiar with this devotion or it has become a new experience. All have found it helpful. Fourteen Pictures are placed around the church. Each picture/station is a point on Jesus’ journey from his trial to his crucifixion and provides a stopping place for meditation and prayer. This devotional practice encourages us to join with Jesus on his final journey and takes between 30 and 40 minutes. Another devotion used during Lent is to read all or part of the Bible. To achieve this a period of time needs to be set apart each day. This does take discipline but that is what Lent is all about: time in which to prepare for Easter when we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus after his death on the Cross. God bless A Brief History of the Stations of the Cross This devotion originated when early Christians visited Jerusalem and wanted to follow literally in the footsteps of Jesus, tracing the path from Pilate’s house to Calvary. They would pause for prayer and devotion at various points. Eventually those pilgrims brought the practice back to their home countries and ever since then Christians of differing traditions have used this form of devotion. In the late fourteenth century the Franciscans were given the responsibility for the holy places of Jerusalem and they erected tableaux to aid the devotion of the visitors. These kinds of images are now commonplace inside churches, and occasionally outside them. The traditional number of fourteen stations was established by Clement XII in 1731 – nine scriptural stations and a further five based on popular devotion.

With the old season on Fenland Drains and rivers closed from March 14th until June 16th many anglers will now be heading to the many stillwaters right across the area. Thankfully Whittlesey anglers and those in the surrounding villages and towns do not have very far to travel to enjoy some fine stillwater action. In fact we are blessed with some of the best carp fisheries in the area. Decoy Lakes is perhaps the best known as their results go country wide each week. It is a very popular fishery and with eleven lakes to choose from you will be spoilt for choice. A top class fishery and well worth a mid week trip as weekends are very busy with matches. For a quieter more relaxed days action why not try Railway Lakes situated not far from Whittlesey Station. The fishery has two lakes the larger deeper of the two has carp to 30lb plus and often attracts specimen anglers to its banks. Many prefer to fish the smaller, shallow pool though, if you are after lots of bites, a mixed bag of fish and still the chance of some hard fighting carp then this could be the one for you. Just out of Whittlesey on the Turves road is Kingsland Fishery, yet another cracking stillwater within minutes of the town centre. The fishery has three pools on it, two of which are full of hard fighting carp, the third is a silver fish pool for those that prefer to fish lighter lines and smaller hooks for tench, bream, chub, ide and smaller carp. This is a fine water for catching carp off

the surface, but you may have to wait a little longer yet until the warm weather arrives. Northey Park, situated at the Peterborough end of the North Bank Road has fast gained a fine reputation for a pleasant days fishing in very peaceful surroundings. There are quite a few lakes to choose from and the beauty of this fishery is that it’s rarely really busy so you are all but guaranteed a swim and it’s not a match fishing venue. Finally we have East Delph Lakes just minutes from the town centre going out towards the Dog and Doublet Sluice. The recent flood waters stopped anglers from getting to the fishery but by now the fishery should be back in full swing. It’s very popular with both match and pleasure anglers and well stocked with a good mix of fish, something for everyone in fact. July next year will see Cambridgeshire hosting two top level cycle races. The first of these will be the third stage of the Tour De France departing from Cambridge on the 7th of July. The second of these will be the Vericool for Schools Circuit of the Fens, a one day race held on the 27th of July 2014 at 12.00 pm starting and finishing in Whittlesey town centre. Following on from the success of last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inaugural event the race has received the highest accolade from British Cycling being classed as one of the 6 top level events for 2014. This guarantees that it will attract the cream of the British based cycling and TV coverage. There will also be several continental teams attending and it is hoped that the race will have several riders from around the world preparing for the Commonwealth Games. The organisers Tom Caldwell and Colin Coe have learnt many lessons from last year which was very much a test event. In particular they are hoping to generate a lot more publicity so people are aware of what is happening and when. Over time it is the organisers hope to make this a truly international event, in the meantime they are likely to have several London Olympic medallists competing in this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event. On the Saturday there will be 4 sportive rides over 130miles, 130KM, 32 miles and a family ride over 10 miles. Entries

The council and the people of Whittlesey have been incredibly helpful in securing the events national status and a number of events are planned for the day in the town centre including live bands. Whittlesey Christian Church Is Prayer Still Important In This Century?

If there is one thing I’ve discovered it’s that prayer is personal, and to various degrees you either believe in it or not, and you participate in it or not. I always smile when people say such things to me as “I suppose as an ordained minister it’s part of your job to believe in the Bible and prayer” So, have I always believed in prayer? - No Have I ever had any moments of doubt? - Yes Looking back over 40+ years in the ministry I recall some incredible answers to prayer which could only be attributed to God intervening. Such as 4 year old Michael who was brought to a meeting in Staffordshire by his mother. Suffering from over 60 fits a day, unable to see or hold his head up straight, and would always have to be spoon fed. Every night he slept in a cot with sides to stop him rolling out, through the day Michael lay on the settee downstairs with chairs placed at the front to stop him from rolling off. After his first round of fits his body had become stiff and his fingers tightly clenched. The first answer to prayer came when I handed Michael back to his mother who, up to that moment had never given God a thought. As she reached to lift his arm up she screamed as she realised that the muscles in his body had become supple once again. A short time later he could hold his head up straight, the fits began reducing, and he regained his sight. Space does not permit the full story.

Has God always answered prayer in the way I expected Him to, definitely not. Like many I have unanswered questions and things I do not understand, but that’s no reason to stop believing in prayer. I don’t stop using my computer or driving the car simply because a problem occurs which seem to defy solutions, even to the experts. Neither do I give up on the positive simply because a negative appears to threaten it. I may not have always the answers to life’s questions, but I do know that I am thankful for the support and strength I have found in both my personal faith in prayer and the prayer support of others. Despite the apparent questions I still know that God is real and cares for me and one day, just as in such fields as medical research, I will discover answers which cause things to click into place.

A word from Cllr Martin Curtis

Being a Councillor in the modern world is really fascinating and, sometimes, difficult. One of the more complex areas is communication. Councillors have to find their own ways of communicating - whether it is through social media, newsletters, magazines like this one or from day to day contact. I try to use a combination of these, but I do try to actively use social media. When it comes to major decisions during meetings, I hope people know that my tendency is also not to be a shrinking violet (I think the supermarkets debate showed that). In fact I try and justify why I vote in a certain way, fully in the knowledge that there will always be some people who disagree with me. My own view is that this is what people expect of a modern councillor. However, sometimes when I stand up to be counted at meetings, what follows is a mass of criticisms directed at me on social media, almost punishing me for both standing up to be counted and for being accessible, whilst those that are quieter but vote the same way escape criticism. This isn’t a moan, I am big enough to stand up for myself. But this is a quandary that some people need to think about. There is a school of thought that every Councillor should use social media in some way - yet many of those observers that advocate this are the same ones that

unfailingly criticise the decisions of those that do use it in a way that deters those who are hesitant from taking it up. The next General Election will be a real defining point for social media. One of the benefits of tools like Facebook and Twitter and sites like Shape Your Place is that people can bypass the newspapers who will often filter and twist a message to suit their own agenda. Of course politicians sometimes do that too - but at least it is the intended recipient’s decision how to interpret it, rather than an intermediary’s. There is, however, a flaw with social media - it is often used as a means to try and make political situations sound straightforward when, in reality, they are almost always complex with conflicting facts and attitudes. However, nobody can deny any more that social media is not important to politics and I would advise anyone with an interest in politics to try and engage with it online. It is where the elections of the future will be discussed and decided.

pring is usually well under way by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s time to blow the cobwebs away and get busy preparing seed beds and borders, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up and planting around the garden. • Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes

Early varieties of potatoes such as ‘Rocket’ and ‘Swift’ can be planted in the early part of March. If you have kept them in a light and frost-free environment until now they should be ‘chitting’ (chitting is where there is slight sprouting from the potatoes). Chitting before planting can encourage earlier and heavier cropping. • Protect new spring shoots from slugs Insects and pests will start to emerge as the temperature increases, so check all plants and treat immediately. To prevent slugs and snails having a feast thinly scatter slug pellets around vulnerable plants. • Plant summer flowering bulbs • Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials • Top dress containers with fresh compost • Mow the lawn on dry days

Give the lawn a thorough rake to remove the remnants of winter and to lift the grass and weeds ready for cutting. Mow the grass if the weather is mild enough and the lawn is showing signs of growth. Ensure the first cut of the season is light, raising the blades slightly higher than your mowers normal cutting position. March is also a great month to do any repairs to your lawn, either with new turf or by re-seeding. • Cut back Cornus grown for its winter stem • Cut back grasses left uncut over winter • Open greenhouse and conservatory vents on warm days • Deal with fresh weeds before they get out of hand

Royal British Legion

ust about everyone has heard of the Royal British Legion. Most people associate us with the Remembrance fortnight in November when we wear poppies to remember those who have fallen, and see the Festival of Remembrance on television, or more locally take part in or watch our parades on Remembrance Sunday in Whittlesey and the villages, and our services on the 11th of November. Indeed this is our most active time of the year for fund raising through the Poppy Appeal and bringing the work of the RBL to the forefront. Nationally the Poppy Appeal raised over 33 million pounds last year and spent on average 1.6 million pounds per week. So you can see how important the contribution of the Poppy Appeal is to support the work of the RBL. The Legion's main function is to give support to the service men and women, veterans and their families, whether it be financial assistance, career advice, short or long term care, odd jobs, or a short term holiday, the Legion is there to help. Did you know that you don't have to have had military service to join the RBL? Anyone can apply for membership, whether it be under 16 years of age as a youth member or over 16 as an associate member. The local branch is very active and covers the area of Whittlesey, Eastrea, Coates and Turves. It meets at 11.A.M on the first Sunday of every month, currently at the Ivy Leaf Club in Whittlesey and new members are always very welcome. Due to the generosity of local people and businesses our branch Poppy Appeal raised £9,282.17 last year. We are fund raising throughout the year and our teddy tombola stall at the Whittlesey Festival and school fetes has proved to be very popular. If anyone has any

cuddly toys in good condition, of any size or description we will gladly accept them to be used on our stall. On the social side February has been a very busy month for us with our annual dinner and presentation dance, and the Whittlesey detachment of cadets becoming officially affiliated into our branch. We are currently looking at various ideas to commemorate the centenary of the start of the 1914 – 1918 world war and hope to give you more information in the months to come. Future social events include a 40's style buffet dance at the leisure centre on the 7th of June to recognise the 70th anniversary of “D” Day. A Glen Miller style band is booked, the Rutland Dance Band, together with the Highland Band and vocalist Michael Knight. Tickets including a light table served buffet are £12.50 each and available from Mr. Newman on 01733 351055. Look out for the posters around town. Factors Affecting Wound Healing By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Mistry (Registered Osteopaths)

This article is a continuation of last month’s article on wound healing. Last month we focused on the process of wound healing whereas this month we will focus on the factors affecting wound healing. Unfortunately we can not speed up the process but there are many ways we can slow it down by creating hurdles to healing. This article will highlight those hurdles and also give you clues on how to reduce their impact.

The 1st Hurdle - Sleep and Rest In today’s modern world we are encouraged to work / play hard and resting little. The downside to this strategy is that the main set of hormones involved in tissue regeneration / repair (termed growth hormones) are most abundant during sleep. They work by binding to the outside of the cell and awakening various chemical reactions in the cell that make proteins. Proteins are the building blocks of all our tissues, therefore more protein equals more tissue. The 2nd Hurdle - Stress The term stress simply means a challenging situation for body be it physical or mental. Examples include physical stress from injury or illness, fear stress from the consequences of our pain and recovery stress from the frustration that we are not healing at the rate we expect. These stresses, irrelevant of their form, suppresses healing through the action of the main stress hormone cortisol. Cortisol reduces the effectiveness of our immune system, constricts our arteries and reduces the effectiveness of growth hormones. We have previously learnt how these three factors aid healing, thus if cortisol suppresses them then invariably healing will be slower. The 3rd Hurdle - Social interaction Oxytocin is a hormone produced during child birth and also interestingly during social interaction. One of its functions is to suppress the release of cortisol. Remember. cortisol suppresses wound healing. Therefore, if social interaction

suppresses cortisol via the release of oxytocin, then social interaction promotes wound healing. The 4th Hurdle - Adaptation Injury recovery times range from a few days to months even years. It is important during this time that we adjust to a temporary new reality that will require us to modifying our activities and adjusting our short term goals. Failure to do this can mean continous re aggravation of the injuries tissues and thus impaired healing. Not accepting this temporarily transition period is the most common cause of prolonged recovery. The 5th Hurdle - Nutrition Wound healing is a challenging time for the body and thus the body’s demand for energy and particular nutrients (including water) increases. Should we fail to supply our body’s with this then we can not expect our wounds to heal at the optimum rate. We would not expect ourselves to win an athletic event without eating healthy. So why do we think differently about wound healing? Those are the main hurdles to healing. Reduce or even eliminate these and you can be assured that your body will solve the problem to the best of its ability and in the shortest time.

The Friends of Whittlesey Cemetery Our garden of remembrance

Would you like to help transform the cemetery and make it into a garden of remembrance? The Friends of Whittlesey Cemetery have begun just that - their simple aim is to transform what is often considered as a place of mourning, into a tranquil place. But they need your help! The Group are looking for volunteers to join them in tending to the cemetery and adding new ideas to improve the area. One great idea that has already been discussed, is to research the history of some of the families found at the cemetery. Each month the group hope to focus on a different person, create an A4 document of their history, and display the

story in the cemetery. The hope is that youngsters will be interested in the history of the people buried within it, and will then be more respectful when visiting the site. With Whittlesea StreetPride agreeing to help keep the cemetery tidy, The Friends of Whittlesey Cemetery now need more numbers to join them and start fundraising for their admirable plans. Whittlesey Transport Questionnaire I recently attended a Cambridgeshire Future Transport meeting in Ramsey where Cambridgeshire County Council in their own words "wished to engage local councillors to review certain bus route arrangements" one of which was the No 31 Ramsey to Peterborough via Whittlesey. The background to this is that in January 2012 Cambridgeshire County Council entered into a three year commitment to reduce their annual transport budget to subsidise local bus services from £2.7 million to £1.5 million. The average cost of subsidising all buses in Cambridgeshire worked out at £2.73 per passenger journey but the cost of the No 31 was merely £0.78 per passenger journey with a total annual passenger journeys last year of 62,821. When I asked if all parts of individual journeys were in need of subsidy I was told they were not, specifically whilst the journey from Ramsey to Whittlesey is subsidised the onward journey from Whittlesey to Peterborough is not, in fact it runs at a profit! Whilst CCC are obviously looking to reduce their budget and as a result further reduce services I had a "light bulb moment" and my thoughts are to submit a scheme to CCC that will effectively reduce the number of daily journeys on the No 31 between Ramsey and Whittlesey by three a day and increase the No 33 service by an additional service running at around 8.30pm in the evening to facilitate our citizens who work late in Peterborough and at present have no bus service home after 6.40pm. Additionally 13 out of 29 Stagecoach/Judds buses terminate in Whittlesey and I will be pressing for some of these to be extended at least to Coates, if not Turves. By my calculations, CCC will achieve their necessary budget cuts in this area whilst at the same time improving the service to our electorate in Eastrea, Coates and possibly Turves - a "win - win" situation. As part of the public consultation a questionnaire has been produced by CCC for the general public to

fill in and return by 31 March 2014 stating their views and this is where I need the help of the general public. Councillor Alex Miscandlon is enthusiastic about my proposals and has offered to spend some time in the village shop at Coates distributing the questionnaire to members of the public in that particular village but I urgently need assistance elsewhere. Copies of the questionnaire will be made available and can be obtained at Grosvenor House during opening hours of 0900 to 1500 Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and I will see that copies are available in the Whittlesey Library. Alternatively the questionnaire can be downloaded from www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/ cft or filled in electronically at http://www.smartsurvey. co.uk/sCambsFT1 This may well be our best opportunity of improving our local bus services but this will only happen if my submission has full public support by as many people as possible filling in the questionnaires and returning them to me at Grosvenor House. Are you buying a house jointly with someone else? It is essential that you should give some thought to what will happen in the future, whether you are buying as a married couple or as partners. Whatever your own individual circumstances you will need to consider what may happen when your present relationship ends whether by death, separation, divorce or other cause. If you are buying property jointly there are two types of ownership you should consider:-

“Beneficial Joint Tenants” Means that you will own the property in equal shares, and that on death of either of you, the property will become the sole property of the survivor. This is the usual basis for those buying as husband and wife and especially as first time marriages. “Tenants in Common” If you buy on this basis it means that you

own the property in specified shares (which may well still be equally). In the event of the death of a joint owner the share of that partner will not transfer to the other partner automatically and instead forms part of that partner’s estate and will be dealt with by his or her will. Married and unmarried couples should also think about how much of the deposit each partner is putting up for the purchase and how best to preserve this if a breakup were to occur. The courts have considerable discression when making decisions over houses within divorce proceedings and take into consideration child welfare. If you have any doubts as to your own position please ask our conveyancing team for advice.

Fenland Special Constabulary Certificate awarded Special Sergeant 4385 David Davies has had a significant impact on the overall performance of both the Special Constabulary and Fenland District. During 2013 David showed exceptional attendance commitment by averaging above 25 hours per week throughout the year. He has demonstrated outstanding professional conduct by embedding himself firmly within the community at Whittlesey, and has attended every featured event within the Whittlesey calendar. The support that he brings is excellent, as resources are even more stripped back and commitments to the community being harder to fill. He has always made himself available which provides the local policing team with great spirit and motivation. David’s contribution to the Whittlesey Policing team does not go unnoticed by his colleagues, where he is strongly considered a big influence within the team. He is a role model for new

Whittlesey Washes South Barrier Bank works Background

The Whittlesey Washes Flood Storage Reservoir lies to the south of the River Nene, east of Peterborough. It plays an important part in helping to reduce the risk of flooding during combined high tides and high river flows. When high river flows coincide with high tides, flood water is stored on an area of land surrounded by embankments. As the tide recedes, water is released back into the River Nene. When the reservoir operates, it stores a volume of water greater than 25,000 cubic metres above surrounding ground levels. It is therefore, under the Reservoirs Act 1975, routinely inspected by an independent engineer to ensure its safe operation. The most recent engineer’s report found that the 18km long reservoir dam, the South Barrier Bank, must be improved to reduce the risk of the bank being breached during an extreme flood. During normal operation of the reservoir, there is little risk of a breach occurring.

Working in partnership

The project is being carried out by the Environment Agency with support from our partners: North Level District Internal Drainage Board, Whittlesey Consortium of Internal Drainage Boards, Middle Level Commissioners, Fenland District Council, Peterborough City Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, Natural England and the RSPB.

What are we doing and where?

We are strengthening the South Barrier Bank to maintain its structural stability. The work involves reshaping the slope and placing extra material at the base of the bank. The entire project will take place over four years and it has been split into 2 phases. Phase 1 works between Ring’s End (Guyhirn) and Poplar House Farm (Goosetree) started in 2013 and will be completed in 2014, and Phase 2 works between Poplar House Farm, and Stanground will start in the summer of 2014. We are holding public drop-in events and everyone is welcome. Come along and see us to find out more about the works. You will have the opportunity to see our designs and discuss the scheme with members of the project team.

Local school children visit the Lawn Tennis Acadamy in London

As part of their prize for winning Best Primary School in the whole of England for promoting tennis in their school, a group of children from Park Lane Primary School and Sir Harry Smith Community College, visited the Lawn Tennis Acadamy in London last month. The children received a tour of the National Tennis Centre and had a two hour tennis coaching session as part of their prize. Peter Ingham, a teacher from Park Lane who attended the trip, added: “Upon arrival at the National Tennis Centre, all of the children and adults from Park Lane and Sir Harry were all treated like VIP's. We were given a guided tour around the centre looking at the range of courts, sleeping areas and specialist gyms and treatment centres that are available. This included a high altitude chamber which players sleep in to aid their recovery from injury. “As we were walking through the centre, we were fortunate to see Greg Rusedski, Jeremy Bates, the ladies Fed-Ex cup team and a group of paralympians practising their tennis skills.

After the tour, we received specialist coaching and took part in aerobic tennis which allowed us to practice our tennis skills whilst also considerably raising our heart rate. “The highlight of the day was being led into centre court (the name for the office block) where the world premiere of our winning film was shown to all the staff and, after a standing ovation, we were presented with our award for winning. After an excellent lunch, we all returned back to school, enthused and excited about what we had just taken part in and looking forward to honing our tennis skills.”

The Car Scheme has been running for 4 years and is manned entirely by volunteers, who provide medical and social journeys for our elderly and housebound residents.
