S
o he wasn’t always so big... one year ago this month, my darling little boy came into our lives. After the longest day of my life (he was in no hurry to come and meet us, it seemed), Dylan Alexander finally made our family complete. This month we will be celebrating his very first birthday, and I know there will be a few tears shed. Being a parent is both the best and hardest thing I’ve ever experienced and I for one would live every minute over again. Finally spring has sprung and we’ve been enjoying some really wonderfully warm weather (at least this is true as I’m writing this). Just around the corner is Easter, and Coates are holding a free Easter Egg Hunt for the children. There are also activities organised as part of the Churches in Whittlesey, so there’s no excuse not to celebrate in style. You’ll notice, flicking through the pages this month, that we have moved a few features, including our events pages which is now at the back of the magazine. Why? Well, we know how important the events pages are, and what better way to finish the issue then with a look ahead to what’s on. We’d love to hear what you think to the changes, and if you have any suggestions. Please feel free to email me at natasha@ discoveringwhittlesey.co.uk April is also the month for the Mayor’s Charity Duck Race. Although last year was a little cold, I can thoroughly recommend buying a duck (it’s only £1) and popping down to the Hero of Aliwal to soak up the atmosphere. It’s great fun, and you never know, you might even pick the winning duck... More information can be found on page 62.

Standing on guard against the
floods
Be prepared: that’s the watchword for Whittlesey’s doughty band of volunteer flood wardens. And never has that been more important than over the past few, rainsodden months as the waters have lapped continuously around the northern fringes of their town. Soon the 16 volunteers will be calling on the 220 households in the Delph ward known to be at potential risk to give them detailed advice packs on what to do in an emergency. They will also be hand delivering letters to every household in the ward, containing the contact details of their assigned warden. The Delph Ward Flood Warden Group was set up in April last year following a meeting with David Vincent, Fenland District Council’s emergency planning manager. It was seen as much needed in an area that borders the Whittlesey Washes and includes the regularly flooded B1040. Not only does the group offer reassurance and practical help to the people of Delph Ward. It also provides a useful model for other areas, such as parts of Wisbech, not least in its ability to get essential information from the Environment Agency and emergency services out to local people quickly and reliably. Each warden has particular responsibility for residents in their own road and if necessary in another nearby street. Their roles include identifying properties of potentially vulnerable residents, encouraging everyone to draw up their own personal flood plans and monitoring the state of local watercourses. Whittlesey town councillor Dee Laws, who runs the group, says: “You need structures and proper organisation. You have to have a plan in place. We have been placed on flood alert three times since we were set up. Fortunately, so far we have had no major emergencies. “But we’re not out of the woods yet. We’re going to get more rain and with climate change the predictions are that these things are going to happen more often. “Having a local flood warden builds up people’s 8
Discovering Whittlesea | April 2014
confidence and relationship. It’s like a buddy partnership.” Councillor David Oliver, Fenland District Council’s Cabinet member responsible for community safety, agrees. "In any emergency it's important to have local people on the ground who are known and trusted and can work closely with the statutory services to help prevent panic and get key information to anyone who may be at risk," he says. Back in 1998 Mrs Laws was herself on standby for evacuation. Since then, she says the situation has got worse and two things are essential to protect existing homes: “First, there should be no further development next to the Whittlesey Washes or on the surrounding flood plains. Secondly, there has to be a regular maintenance programme for our rivers, dykes and drainage ditches.” The Delph Ward group would welcome more volunteers. To contact them, call Whittlesey Town Council on 01733 351296 or email whittleseytowncouncil@btconnect.com Picture above WHITTLESEY WETLAND: Dee Laws by the floodwater at the end of her road last month

WAGS
Whittlesey Allotment and Gardeners Society WAGS meet at 7.30pm on the 2nd Thursday of every month at the St. Johns Ambulance Hall, Plough Road We are a friendly group of people interested in gardening, growing our own fruit and veg and having fun pursuing our hobby. Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in gardening and you don’t have to have an allotment to join us. In fact, you don’t even need a garden. Some of the best plants are grown on the kitchen windowsill! Over the last year we’ve held a barbecue at the allotment site, several quizzes at the meetings and a Winter Warmer event at the December meeting. The Winter Warmer is a chance for people to show off their baking skills as we cater for our own party. We’ve also secured the funding for a compost toilet at the allotment site on New Road which will benefit all the allotment holders. Our latest project is funding from the Glassmoor Bank Environmental fund to plant native hedging around the boundary of the allotment site. This will in time provide more habitats for wildlife such as birds, butterflies and bees. The Autumn Show, held in September, is an opportunity for anyone in the Whittlesey area to enter not only the various fruit and vegetable
classes, but also classes for jams, pickles, baking, floral displays and homemade wines and beers. There are also classes for children under 16 to show their growing and baking skills. Plans for this year’s meetings include speakers, seed & plant swaps and more quizzes. We also have regular visits by representatives from the Town Council, Whittlesey in Bloom and the local Police. Membership is £5 per year and this includes £2 for membership of the National Allotment Society. The NAS membership entitles us to reduced price seeds from Kings Seeds. There are also discounts available from purchases at some local businesses.
If you’re interested in joining and would like to come along and meet us, you will be assured of a warm welcome at any meeting and if you would like more information please call the Secretary, Becky Lindsay, on 01733 208747 or email beckylindsay@virginmedia. com. Our website is under construction at the moment so watch this space for further details.
|Policing your area by Geographic Sergeant of Whittlesey Paul Harris The policing team has been involved a lot this month with matters of Anti-Social Behaviour(ASB) and the distress that it causes persons. I had an interesting meeting, with two persons who were really upset ( And understandably so!) over the fact that flowers had been stolen from a loved one’s grave at the Cemetery, in Cemetery Road, Whittlesey. It appears this is a widespread issue that links to general ASB in that area. However only a couple of persons thus far have come forward and discussed it with me. I would like to encourage any person who has suffered this sort of crime and terrible behaviour to let your local team know. Currently the team have increased their patrols of the area but no suspicious person have been seen to date. However the patrols will continue and hopefully more information will be passed to us to allow us to make an impact. The team has also been dealing with issues on North Green at Coates where persons are throwing eggs, veg and other waste matter at people’s homes. Again vulnerable people are getting very

distressed over this sort of action, seeing their homes be targeted in this manner is very frightening especially if you live on your own. These kind of actions are very menacing and see people living in fear. Again in response we have increased our patrols at specific times to catch the persons doing this. To date there is mixed descriptions of suspects which is not allowing us to progress the matter. I again would welcome anyone with any information or sighting of suspicious activity to let us know so we can act and bring the offenders to justice. These two examples, are only a couple of cases the team are currently working on, when vulnerable persons in the community are being effected through crime or targeted through ASB. Please be assured that the team and I take this type of crime very seriously and every effort goes into bringing offenders to justice, protecting the vulnerable and keeping all people safe their communities. If you have any information to offer on any incident or crime of this nature please come forward as speak to us.

| A word from - your Mayor Dave Mason At last Spring has arrived, the daylight hours are longer, the temperatures are rising and the sun is again exerting its influence more in this part of the world. As a result our gardens are again bursting into life with green shoots appearing on our trees, grass slowly growing again on our lawns and around the town the combined efforts of our hard working Street Pride and Whittlesey in Bloom teams are coming to fruition in the form of the many colourful flowers adorning both the entrances to Whittlesey and various locations within the town. With Springtime comes Easter and the promise of regeneration combined with renewed optimism that all will be well. This is certainly the case at Whittlesey Town Council where we continually strive to do the very best for our community but realise that on our own we are limited in what can be achieved. The support of you all is vital in achieving objectives and maintaining high standards and as a council we truly appreciate all the sterling work that many individuals and organisations put in to make Whittlesey the fine town that it is. One outstanding example of the community pulling together is the ongoing saga of proposed developments on the north side taking in Snowley Park and Showfields areas where action groups comprising local residents and others have worked tirelessly to keep the public informed of issues surrounding these planning applications. The current situation is that the Snowley Park proposal having been recommended for refusal by Whittlesey Town Council and endorsed by Fenland District Council who have formally refused permission is now set for a judicial review in May this year at a venue yet to be decided. A review of the refused permission for Showfields has been set for June. I wish to thank all parties for their stance on this extremely important issue and can assure the public that every means at the disposal of Whittlesey Town Council will be utilised to ensure that these developments do not go ahead. I also wish to thank all those members of the public who have taken the time and trouble to express their views on the Cambridgeshire County Council Transport Questionnaire which will assist me considerably when I formally put forward my views on the bus issues in this area. I have spoken with our MP Steve Barclay on the matter and he has asked me to keep him fully informed on the situation and has promised his assistance where appropriate. I have also discussed with Steve Barclay the regeneration of the town centre Buttercross area and I know that the Leader of Cambridgeshire County Council, our very own Martin Curtis, has 12

this item firmly on his agenda. This is an item that has not gone away by any means and will be further revisited in the very near future. What great news to hear that the 106 agreements for the Sainsbury Superstore and Country Park have finally been signed off by Fenland District Council. My congratulations are due to so many people who have fought successfully for this project and it is to be hoped that the associated agreements for the industrial and commercial units at this site will also be resolved soon. I have written a personal letter to Justin King, Chief Executive of Sainsbury to try and ensure that work on this site commences within the Sainsbury 2014 building programme so I look forward to the diggers appearing along Eastrea Road before too long. A meeting was held recently at Grosvenor House to discuss how the Whittlesey Cemetery could be maintained to a high standard and if possible improved. To enable a Friends of Whittlesey Cemetery Group to be formally set up and to be effective in such matters as fund raising and project work a constitution will need to be put in place which basically means that a committee comprising a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and committee members will need to be appointed. If you feel that you wish to contribute to this enterprising project then please contact me and I will make sure that you receive all relevant information. Speaking of the environment and particularly our public places there has been a lot of publicity recently on dog fouling and I would like to add my support to the campaign of providing the public with an awareness of what is becoming an unpleasant matter in our community. Most dog owners are responsible persons who clear up after their pets but there is still a significant minority who disregard the basic rules and leave work for others as well as possibly open up serious health issues for young children in particular. As a Town Council we fully endorse the good work carried out by our Street Scene Officers in educating members of the public and if necessary bringing them to task by on the spot fines.
Cllr Dave Mason

1 leg of lamb (Ask us for our free range English Spring Lamb); 1 bulb of garlic; fine sea salt; fresh ground pepper; approx. 2 tsp. garlic powder; approx. 2 tsp. sweet paprika; 2 medium onions, peeled & quartered; 1 cup dry white wine; 2-3 sprigs of fresh rosemary; 10 sprigs of fresh thyme; 2-3 tsp. dried oregano; 2-3 bay leaves; juice of 2 lemons; 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil; salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Peel the skins off the garlic clove and slice. Stick a knife into the lamb and make a hole, then stick in a slice of garlic. insert as many pieces of garlic as you want. 2. Pre-heat your oven to 220 and place the rack in the middle position. Drizzle your lamb with some olive oil and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder and paprika. Place the leg of lamb in a roasting pan that just fits the leg. Place in your pre-heated oven and roast uncovered for about 10-15 minutes or until browned, then flip the leg and roast for another 10-15 minutes. 3. Remove the lamb from the oven and reduce the heat to 180. Place the quartered onions around the lamb, add the herbs (thyme, bay, rosemary, oregano) and squeeze in the lemon juice and pour the wine into the pan. Add the olive oil and enough hot water to cover third of the lamb. 4. Cover and place the lamb back in the oven for 2 hours, baste the lamb once an hour. After two hours, flip the leg of lamb (add more water if necessary and adjust seasoning of liquid with salt and pepper). 5. Total cooking time is around 3 hours, the meat should just fall off the bone. 6. Serve with roast potatoes and roast veg. April 2014| Discovering

Hereward the Outlaw or Exile
H
ereward was born about 1035 to, according to one account, Edith and Leofric of Bourne in Lincolnshire although there is no documentary evidence of this. Abbot Brand of Peterborough was Hereward’s uncle but he was not related to Edith or Leofric and there is no record of a Leofric living at Bourne. Modern research suggests Hereward was more likely AngloDanish with Asketil his Danish father. It seems that Abbot Brand was Asketil’s brother and Hereward’s apparent ability to call on Danish support may well reinforce this theory. The Doomsday book compiled in 1069 shows a Hereward in the area of Bourne and Crowland. Because of his disobedience to his father and general disruptive behaviour he was declared an outlaw by Edward the Confessor. He was 18 years old at the time. He spent time in exile in Cornwall, Ireland and Flanders where legend has it he rescued a Cornish princess from an unwanted marriage and fought an enormous bear. In Flanders he joined an expedition against the islands in te Scheldt Estuary. When William invaded and conquered England in 1066 he was working as a mercenary in Flanders and at some point had married Turfida. He returned to England in 1069 after Harold, who had succeeded Edward the Confessor as King, had been killed to discover his family’s lands had been commandeered by the Normans and his brother killed. He took his revenge by killing fourteen of them whilst they were at a drunken feast. He then gathered followers and went to his uncle at Peterborough Abbey. In 1070 he participated in the anti-Norman insurrection on the Isle of Ely and the Danish King Sweyn Estrith sent a small army to assist him. He then stormed and sacked Peterborough Abbey, which now had a Norman Abbot, in the company of Sweyn’s men to save the Abbey’s treasures and relics from the Normans. He is supposed to have returned the treasures and relics after seeing a vision of St. Peter, but other sources say they went to Denmark with Sweyn’s recalled army. Earl Morcar brother of Harold, then joined Hereward in the Isle of Ely. The Normans made an attack on the Isle using a mile long boarded causeway across the marshes at Aldreth. This attack was repulsed either by the setting fire of the reed beds or the causeway collapsing under the weight of armour and horses. Whittlesey becomes involved much later when they were required to pay towards the upkeep of this causeway. Mr Folliott gave the Town 10 acres of land and some property to finance this imposition. The last payment was made in 1670. The Normans then tried intimidation by installing a witch in a tall tower, but this too was set on fire with the witch still inside. Abbot Thurston of Ely Abbey, fearing for the future of the Abbey owing to the Normans threatening to confiscate his lands, revealed a hidden pathway across the marshes resulting in the capture of Ely. Earl Morcar was taken prisoner, but Hereward escaped with some of his
18

supporters and hid in Rockingham Forest. Hereward tried to negotiate with King William but was provoked into a fight with a man called Oggar which led to his capture and imprisonment but his followers managed to liberate him. King William was persuaded to listen to him again and this time a pardon was given and he lived the rest of his life in peace, Another version says that he was killed by Norman Knights. A third explanation suggests he received no pardon and went into exile never to be heard of again. Whichever version is correct his death has been established as 1072. During this time he was married a second time to Alftruda after Turfida had entered a Convent. It was not until the late fourteenth century that the epithet ‘the Wake’ was added to his name. This was probably given to him by the Wake family, the Norman landowners who gained his land in Bourne, to imply a family connection and legitimise their claim to the lands. The Wake family claimed descent from Hereward’s daughter by his second wife Alftruda. The existence of Hereward the Wake is not disputed, but the story of his life almost certainly contains exaggerations of his deeds, some of which is outright fiction. From sparse facts has grown the legend of Hereward the Wake. An entertaining story inspired by imagination to create an English hero.

Holy Week and Easter: 13th to Sunday April 20th
Our pilgrimage through Lent reaches its highpoint with Holy Week and Easter Recalling the events of Jesus’ last week we are led into the glorious celebration of Easter Day – the Day of Resurrection – the day we declare ‘Jesus lives no more to die.’ Taking part in Holy Week and Easter makes demands on us both physically and spiritually but God’s gift to us is a renewed and deepened faith which will take us through another year. The services we have are God’s gift to the Church. Each service, at least in part, can be traced back to the earliest days of the Church, dating back 2,000 years to the time of Jesus and the services he knew at home, in the synagogue and in the temple. Elements in our services also come from Jewish services and are up to 3,000 years old, for example the Passover festival. Elements of the Passover meal form part of our Holy Communion service: the reading of scripture, the sharing of bread and wine, the remembrance of God’s divine activity in the world. As we recall the activity of Jesus in his last week we are recalling what God has done in our world – Jesus is God and Man, the Word made Flesh. Through Jesus’ activity we witness the activity of God himself. This is the incredible claim which lies at the heart of Christian faith, Holy Week and Easter.
Palm Sunday – Gospel of Matthew chapter 21: 1-11. Jesus enters into Jerusalem – palm crosses will be blessed in church and available to collect through the week or ask someone to collect one for you. Holy Thursday – Gospel of Matthew chapter 26: 1756. The last supper and the betrayal of Jesus – at your evening meal pause and reflect on God’s gift of Holy Communion – His divine presence in the gift of bread and wine. Good Friday – pause at 10 a.m. and join in prayer with those gathering at the Buttercross and between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. to join with all those in church recalling the death of Jesus. Gospel of St John chapter 18 verse 1 to chapter 19 verse 42. Holy Saturday – In the evening join in with The Vigil – turn to your Bible and read your favourite passages recalling the divine activity of God in the world. This is the evening you could remember your own baptism and ask what it means to you. Easter Sunday – He is risen from the dead – we should think of nothing else this day. Come to church and worship the Risen Lord.
| Fishing news by Ken Wade With the closed season on Fenland drains and river well behind us now anglers in the area are already heading of to local stillwaters. Thanks to a relatively mild winter those out fishing have enjoyed some fine sport. At this time of the year its usual to start on a feeder of one kind or another. A cage feeder packed with groundbait works well, but the more product Method feeder approach can be and often is the way to put together a big weight. If the fish are not keen on a lot of bait then the method can be loaded up with groundbait. As we get into warmer weather and the fish are on the feed then more often than not pellets moulded around the feeder produces the best response. Hookbaits can be anything from good old fationed maggots to the brand new Old Ghost meat sausage hook baits. This new bait has taken commercial carp world by storm and looks like being a real winner either hair rigged on a feeder of fished on the pole or waggler. Onto our local waters now and there is good news from just about everyone with carp really on the feed. At Decoy Lakes most methods have been taking fish,
22

most start off on a feeder then switch to the pole or waggler later in the day. Watch out for the bigger carp moving into the margins, try paste meat or sweetcorn on the hook fished as close to the nearside margins as you can get. Kingsland Fishery is also running into top form along with Railway Lakes, both have the advantage of allowing floating baits to be used, well worth a try on warmer day when the fish are moving close to the surface. Northey Park Fishery is a crascking venue for the pleasure angler with several lakes to choose from you will be spoilt for choice. Float Fish Farm Fishery is the relatively new kid on the block, but make no mistake this fishery is already producing some fine sport. We are so lucky to have so many top quality waters within a few miles of Whittlesey town centre, go and give one or two a try, I do not think you will be disappointed.

THE CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT OF INNOVATIVE CHILD CARE IN WHITTLESEY
R
ecent media has highlighted children’s learning and development around enabling environments which includes their physical interactions outside of the classroom, for the last two years Kidzone has offered a forest school option for our pre-school children and has a staff member who is a qualified forest school leader. This type of education and experience has been shown to be vital to a child’s development; it addresses all aspects of learning and development from communication, problem solving, creative skills, gross and fine motor skills and creates confident, motivated children. To reinforce this type of enabling environment Kidzone have made a commitment to the children of Whittlesey and Cambridgeshire County Council to continue providing this service and have recently added an outdoor classroom and environment on our Alderman Jacobs School site to bring a forest school experience to all the users of our centres. The room will provide the children and parents who use our service a point of contact with the woodland space, to see the interactions of their children and their experiences and to provoke an interest in the environment. Due to the exceptionally good results we have had providing the forest school project we are now including weekly trips to the swimming pool in our curriculum and have had more excellent feedback of communicative and confident children in the short period it has operated. Other off site trips included the soft play area at our local children centre, several local outdoor spaces and parks, the fire station and shopping not including the holiday activities, all of which the children have a measurable amount of input to express their desires. For the outstanding efforts Kidzone and its staff

members have made to bring these developments to Whittlesey the “Early Years and Child Care Team” at Cambridgeshire County Council have identified Kidzone as a centre of experience. The services we offer are flexible enough to meet the demands of many working parents with childcare offered fifty one weeks of the year from 7:30am-6:00pm, including “Free Twos” and “Nursery Educational Fund” allowing up to fifteen hours of free childcare for children between two and five years old, teacher training days, one off usage, respite, school holidays and before and after school. Kidzone’s aim is to provide good quality, professional care, education and activity for children from two years old to fourteen. Kidzone Child Care Services has been established on the Alderman Jacob School site since 1996 and is proud to be a part of the community which serves the children and parents of Whittlesey and the surrounding area. The centre and all the staff members are registered with Ofsted and on the last inspection were given a “GOOD” rating (October 2009) but was outstanding in “The extent to which children achieve and enjoy their learning” and “The effectiveness of the setting’s engagement with parents and carers” Staff are DBS(CRB) cleared and first aiders; Kidzone has a five star food hygiene rating. CELEBRATE EASTER WITH US - SUNDAY APRIL 20th at 10:45am I look forward to both Easter & Christmas for many reasons, one of them being the fabulous job every department in our church does with putting together what always turns out to be an inspiring and fantastic presentation - Drama, Mime, Music, Puppets, Dance, Poetry, Children - It’s all there and brought together to make it something you really will not want to miss. Each year new people join with those who enjoy coming to all our ‘special celebrations’ This year we can now accommodate more people in our newly enlarged and refurbished facilities. If you didn’t make it to our opening celebration, what a wonderful opportunity to come and see the changes we have made. During the opening event many suggested that we might want to call our building ‘The Tardis’ owing to it being so much bigger and better than it appears from the outside. Now if you’re already thinking - ‘going to church, how boring’ – let me shatter your misguided illusion. Here at Whittlesey Christian Church we break the mould of tradition without destroying the sense of meaning and purpose behind going to church. Christianity, especially Easter is all about LIFE not death or dreariness. Without becoming irreverent we feel that there should be a sense of fun and joyfulness in going to church. At least God Himself seems to thinks so. It was after all God who, in His Word left us such phrases as, ‘I was glad when
they said to me let us go to the house of God’ and ‘enter into His house with joy and thanksgiving’ Now to me that does not sound like a God who advocates boring, sombre, and lifelessness. Some years ago I came across a verse of scripture referring to offerings which made me smile. It went something like this ‘God loves an hilarious giver’ Now that’s what I call different, I have never yet seen anyone laughing all the way to the offering basket. If you are feeling depressed, fearful of the future, struggling with mounting problems and you have generally lost any reason to live or your zest for life Come And Get A Faith & Hope Lift. In fact, don’t wait for Easter, come and worship with our family this Sunday. Come, even if you’re one of those for whom life is going just great, in the words of that well known comedian ‘there’s more’.

| A word from - Cllr Martin Curtis At long last I am able to say that planning permission has been issued for the Sainsbury Supermarket and the associated country park. It has take far too long to get to this stage (over a year) some of that is for good reasons and, in my view, some for bad - but at last we are here. During that year long period, I have said little publicly because I am not sure it would have helped, but I have challenged and asked questions behind the scenes, doing everything I can to ensure that the democratic will of the Planning Committee is carried out. It is worth stressing however, that this is still not a done deal. Planning permission was issued on 27th February and following that is a six week hiatus during which any opposing parties can notify of their intent to make a legal challenge. We all know that there was significant challenge to the planning committee’s decision a year ago, I hope by now those responsible have accepted that the vast majority of Whittlesey people want the Sainsbury 26

and the Country Park. I have asked for a meeting with the Sainsbury team as soon as possible to talk about timescales, but I know they are very keen to get on with the country park and will be calling some meetings around this shortly. As a Town we need to get behind this project. We have ten years to make the country park sustainable - to get a financial structure in place that means we can keep on funding it. So, to be blunt, we need as much help and as many ideas as we can to achieve it. If you want to discuss this, or any other Whittlesey issue, you can get in touch through these means: Email: mjc@martincurtis.net Tel: 07887808442 Facebook: whittleseynorth Website: www.martincurtis.net You can also follow me on Twitter using @cllrmcurtis

S
pring should be well under way this month with daffodils in flower and blossom trees blooming. ‘April Showers’ are common but don’t be deceived by sudden bursts of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly during dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather should give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens. • Keep weeds under control. Hand dig out weeds from your borders before they get out of control then you will only need to hoe occasionally throughout the season. To suppress weeds add a layer of bark to your borders. • Sow hardy annuals. Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is reliably warm day and night. • Increase the water given to houseplants.

• Prune shrubs, trees and hedges. April is the perfect month to prune shrubs, trees and hedges before birds begin to nest. Remove foliage from any overgrown evergreen shrubs and cut back summer flowering shrubs such as hydrangeas. • Divide herbaceous perennials. Divide and transplant clumps of herbaceous perennials that have become too large for their space and those that are flowering poorly or have lost their shape.
Plant of the month facts
Rhododendron. Ancient Greek meaning ‘Rose Tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help to brighten those difficult dark spots in the garden. Rhododendrons prefer acidic soil in a sheltered position and once established require little attention apart from an annual mulch and occasional feed.
Increase the watering of indoor and conservatory plants as the days lengthen. Check if plants need watering every few days. • Feed hungry shrubs and roses. Apply a general purpose fertiliser to beds and borders. Take care not to damage emerging shoots or to burn them with the fertiliser. • Sow new lawns or repair bare patches. Sowing new lawns or overseeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April to early May. Prepare the ground for sowing by digging, levelling and slightly firming beforehand.

Patients Participation Group (PPG) Following the announcement in February of the purchase from donations of a Blood Pressure monitor for the waiting room, the practice is delighted to announce that the equipment was installed with easy to follow instructions on Monday 10 March. With just a day’s notice The Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out a very thorough routine Inspection of the practice on Thursday 20 February. All doctors’ surgeries will eventually be visited by the CQC and graded as compliant (pass) or non-compliant (fail). The CQC targeted the following four standards as part of their routine inspection of New Queen Street: • Patients consent to care and treatment • The care and welfare of patients who use our services • Cleanliness and infection control – including Health and Safety • Complaints handling. Most of the staff at work on the day were interviewed by the inspectors; with Sister Wendy Popple who is Infection Control Lead for the practice; and Helena Papworth the Practice Manager playing a larger role in providing detailed answers to the inspectors comprehensive questions.
also reviewed information gathered about the practice before they came and whilst they were here they checked that the Practice has the correct policies and procedures in place to back up what they do. Everyone that took part are to be commended on what they have achieved and the feedback is that the Practice is Outstanding and compliant in all areas. The full report from the CQC was received at the practice on 3 March and will be available on the practice’s website once it has been published by the CQC. Hinchingbrooke Hospital out patients clinic: General Surgery, Orthopaedic and Gyncaecology outpatient appointments commenced at the surgery during March. Hinchingbrooke Hospital Consultants in these three specialities started to work from the surgery; initially there will be one clinic per month which will increase on demand. Any associated surgery will be carried out at Hinchingbrooke. Patients referred to these three specialities will be given the choice of where they wish to be referred (Peterborough or Hinchingbrooke) at the point of GP referral.
Ten patients who were at the surgery on the day were asked if they minded feeding back to the inspectors about the practice and the service they receive, which they duly did; and we would like to thank them for their part in the inspection. The inspectors spent a lot of time observing how the staff and doctors care for the patients. They

Understanding Muscle Spasms By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Mistry (Registered Osteopaths)
It is a painful experience that always occurs when you least expect it! But why do they occur? Lets start by understanding the basics, how do muscles contract? Muscles contract only because they are told to by the nervous system. The brain creates the signal and passes it down through the spinal cord into the carrier nerves (the large nerves which exit the spinal cord). These then divide and divide again as they travel towards their destination. They terminate as local nerves which make direct contact with the muscle (see diagram). When the signal arrives, it triggers the muscle to release some positively charged ions (e.g. calcium being the main one) which in turn starts the process of muscle contraction. A muscle contraction is simply a muscle shortening and thus pulling on the bones it is attached to. Throughout the contraction process [like all cells]] the muscle will use up energy which is made from oxygen and sugars. It will also create waste products that are removed via the blood. A muscle spasm differs from a regular contraction because it very strong, prolonged and unplanned. The nervous system is ultimately responsible because it controls the muscle. The fault can occur anywhere in the nervous system as the following paragraphs explain. 1) Brain and spinal cord The brain / spinal cord lose effective control of a portion of the muscular system leading to ill timed, uncoordinated and strong contractions. This occurs following spinal cord or brain injuries as well as disease processes such as dystonia. 2) Carrier nerve Commonly referred to as a trapped nerve. The mechanical compression associated with the entrapment irritates the nerve making it hyper-sensitive and hyper excitable. Thus any signal travelling down this route is likely to be distorted and amplified. An amplified signal will create a large response in the muscle, hence a muscle spasm. 3) Local nerve The local nerves make direct contact with the muscle and thereby share the same environment. We know from above that nerves are sensitive to changes in their local surrounding. Therefore, excessive waste products from the muscles will irritate the local nerves. Muscles generally produce little waste however if they are over-used or do not have enough oxygen or energy they will produce more waste. If this situation continues for a long time the waste products build up and start irritating the local nerve making it hyper-excitable and leading to a muscle spasm. 4) Ions / water concentration changes in the body In these cases the muscle spasms tend to be body wide (i.e. not localised to a single muscle group). They occur because the nervous system (as a whole) becomes hyper-excitable. Remember our body work within a set range of tolerances with respect to a number of variables such as temperature, water/ ion concentrations, pH, etc. Deviations outside these tolerances creates side effects, one of those being a hyper-excitable nervous system. We hope this article has been interesting and we wish you an enjoyable April. April 2014| Discovering

In the early summer months of 2013 local artist James Green was commissioned to capture the spirit of the straw bear festival within one of his paintings. Knowing the community focus and the benefits that the festival brings to the town he contacted the straw bearers to offer a donation for every one of the 350 limited edition prints sold. At our March meeting we were presented with a generous cheque for £180 accumulated from the prints sold to date. the hobbit desolation of smaug
New opening times: Sun-Thu 12-8pm & Fri-Sat 12-9pm
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is the second part of the popular trilogy which is a prequel to The Lord of the Rings. The journey continues for Bilbo, Gandalf and the Dwarves and follows We now rent TV series box sets their escape from the Misty Mountains as they make their way APRIL RELEASES towards the lair of the dragon Smaug. • AMERICAN HUSTLE • ANCHORMAN 2 • HARRY HILL MOVIE • 47 RONIN Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage return to • SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY continue their quest, while Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek) voices Smaug and Orlando Bloom reprises his role as Legolas. The sequel to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was meant to be the final installment until director Peter Jackson announced the series would become a trilogy, just as his Lord Of The Rings 30/04/2014 saga was. The Desolation of Smaug is as gripping and breath-taking in it’s cinematography as the first. Freeman’s portrayal of Bilbo is surprisingly wonderful and the audience are carried along the journey with the characters. Whilst the scenery is beautiful, there are moments of real tension as the pack or orcs continue their hunt for Bilbo and we finally meet Smaug himself. The only disappointing thing about this film is that we’ll have to wait another 12 months before we can watch the final. It is that good! Whittlesey WI members enjoyed a social evening at the March meeting with a theme "The 1940's". Members dressed up and enjoyed a tasty buffet of spam and paste sandwiches, an eggless fruit cake, mince and potato pie, jelly and blancmange were enjoyed with a tasty cup of tea. Afterwards a quiz entitled "1940 's" was won by Margaret Pickering and Ginny Lindsey. The next meeting is on Tuesday Ist April at 7- 30 pm at St Andrew's Church Hall. The speaker will be Kay Mayor who will give a talk entitled "Mayor's Tales". New members are most welcome.Tel Ginny 01733 205148 April 2014| Discovering

They took the opportunity to create a business supplying textile related craft markets and have established a strong relationship with their customers, many of whom have supported them since they started. The company organise two textile related craft supplies Fairs where specialist suppliers provide visitors with a wide product selection plus the opportunity to view product exhibitions, demonstrations and participate in craft “taster” sessions. Moving /Buying a Home? Conveyancing involves legally transferring home ownership from the seller to the buyer. It starts when you make or accept an offer on a house and ends when you either receive or hand over the keys. The Law Society has introduced a Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS) and it is in everyone’s best interest to find a reputable solicitor who has no conflict of interest with any other party and is also a member of this Scheme. Check the fee quoted to you for your conveyancing. It should include:
• Cost of dealing with your mortgage provider. • Cost of obtaining all searches required. • Cost of registering the property at the Land Registry at the end of the
transaction. • Cost of any referral fees being paid (if any).
We would always recommend that you use a solicitor who is local to your area, as it will ensure that you can access the solicitor easily and iron out any problems that may arise quickly. It is in the best interests of the solicitor to make the whole process run as smoothly as possible for the client. This should include all dealings with estate agents and solicitors acting for the other side. At Dack Pearson, we pride ourselves on being able to process a sale or purchase of your home as swiftly and stress-free as possible.

Easter Egg Hunt at Holy Trinity, Coates! On Saturday 19th April, the Friends of Holy Trinity are holding a Children’s Easter Egg Hunt around the church grounds with free refreshments for accompanying parents. Over the last few years, the Friends of Holy Trinity in Coates have organised various events from the Village Show to Craft Fairs, from Pantomimes to Bingo to raise money for essential works to the church building. “We thought we’d try something different this year.” said Mark Fairbank, the Chairman of the Friends. “We decided that a treasure hunt would be a good idea, and then someone suggested having it over the Easter weekend and having Easter eggs as prizes”. The hunt is aimed at children of all ages and will be in the safe confines of the church grounds, so parents can keep a watchful eye on them whilst enjoying a cup of tea and a hot cross bun. The event is free to enter and will take place on Saturday 19th April from 10.30 until 12.30. Hot drinks and hot cross buns will be available for free to parents who accompany their children (subject to availability).

News from the RBL
It has been a busy time for the Whittlesey branch over the past few weeks. First of all we held our Annual Dinner and Presentation Dance at the Ivy Leaf Club which was enjoyed by all who attended. The Member of the Year was announced and this year was given to Chris Worsley. Although a relatively new member of the branch Chris has been very active and last year entered the Great Eastern Run. He raised £500.00 and donated it equally to the branch and the Poppy Appeal. A fantastic effort indeed! Chris will be doing it all over again this year and will be grateful for any donation or sponsorship to help him beat last year's total. He has served for 10 years in the Royal Anglians and for 5 years in the REME. A presentation was also made to Mr. Wally Newman who had recently stood down after 23 years as Branch Secretary. Well done to Chris and Wally. A second presentation evening was held at the Ivy Leaf Club and this was to mark the affiliation of the local cadet detachment with the branch. Over 30 army cadets from Whittlesey Detachment No1 (Hereward) Company Cambridgeshire Army Cadet Force received badges from our Vice Chairman Mr. Geoff Butler to mark the affiliation of both groups. Certificates were also exchanged in the presence of branch members, Colonel Colin Elsden DL, County President of the RBL and our Mayor David Mason. Nationally the Legion has registered 914 affiliations, including 414 with the Army Cadet Force across the UK. We continue to discuss many suggestions to commemorate the start of the 1914 – 1918 world war and would welcome any positive suggestions you may have. The actual date of the outbreak of the war was the 4th of August 1914 and ended on the 11th of November 1918. During that time 1,117,077 Commonwealth service men and women lost their lives. The RBL, in partnership with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission would like to see each and every one of these men and women commemorated through the centenary years. This 5 year project is called “ Every Man Remembered”. Tickets for the Big Band 40's dance on the 7th of June 2014 are available from MR. Wally Newman on Tel. No 01733 351055. This event to be held at the leisure centre is to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of “D” Day and tickets are priced at £12.50 each. We now have members ties and lapel badges available and any member who wishes to purchase them can contact me. As summer approaches we are still in need of any cuddly toys in good condition to use on our Poppy Appeal tombola stall at local events. National Helpline 08088028020. |Community news Defibrillator for All Last year £2,650 was raised in memory of Mandi Lee. The money was put to good use, and a brand new defibrillator now stands at the Esso Garage, in Whittlesey. This is in a secure unit, but can be used by anyone of any age, at any time of day or night, in order to save a life. No training is necessary as it gives verbal step by step instructions. The response was so positive, that a charity has now been set up which aims to get more defibrillators in the area. Defibrillator for all are now well on the way to purchase another one, which they hope will be placed in the Victory Avenue area of Whittlesey. Di Coulson, secretary of Defibrillator for All, said: “I would just like to give you all a very heartfelt and sincere thank you for the support that everyone has given to this cause. The community as a whole have been very generous and I hope that you will all continue to support us for the good of the community. The charity can be found on Facebook DEFIBRILLATORS FOR ALL if you would like to join our group or just follow and support any further events that we have in the future.”

| A word from - your local MP Steve Barclay It may have been awards season in Hollywood but we could be set for our own Grammy Award winners if pupils from Park Lane Primary School and New Road Primary School have anything to do with it. Pupils from the schools performed at the 02 arena as part of the Young Voices Choir. Congratulations to all pupils and staff who show what can be achieved through dedication and hard work. Other budding musicians and entertainers in Cambridgeshire may be interested in Parliamentary competitions Rock the House and Film the House, which offer the opportunity for creative talents to have their work judged by the leading industry representatives and win prizes ranging from festival slots, studio time and equipment to the opportunity to have their work premiered in London’s West End. For more information on how to enter Rock the House go to www.rockthehouseHOC.com and for Film the House www.filmthehouse.com Following the devastating scenes of flooded homes in the Somerset Levels and elsewhere, I have invited organisations including the Environment Agency, the Middle Level Commission and the NFU to attend a Flooding Round Table meeting to review water management in the Fens. The meeting will bring together representatives from these key agencies with the local district authority and 62

other decision makers and is scheduled to take place on 21st March at South Fens Business Centre. One particular area of discussion will be the Whittlesey Washes, where work continues. Whilst the initial proposal from the Environment Agency was to spend £3-5 million on a spillway, which would have meant a controlled flooding breach around Coates, after our lobbying locally the Environment Agency agreed to spend £21m on fully repairing the bank. It shows amongst the bad news recently, there is good news in the flood protection work underway in Whittlesey. I am pleased to be supporting the “Bully Banks” campaign group and recently met with local businessman Peter Grice in Parliament to support the campaign to help those affected by bank mis-selling. The Bully Banks campaign group has over 1,700 small businesses throughout the UK, and their complaint is currently under investigation by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Variety show raises funds for Jenner Health Centre
Following on from the last two shows, organisers held another successful fundraising variety show on Saturday 22nd February at the Ivy Leaf Club Raising funds for practice equipment not covered by normal funding for the good of the practice and patients. The Third Jenner Patient Participation Group fund raising Variety Show, saw a selection of performers who all gave their time for free, in order to raise funds to improve the facilities of the Jenner Health Centre. Sound and Lighting was provided by Breve Music from the Rivergate Centre and Scenery prepared by Dave Bailey, Hon, Shu Wae and Bradley Moores and Margo Veuve. The Show kicked of with five songs from Whittlesey Wind Quintet, led by Barry Strickle, followed by soloist and Straw Bear Champion Brian Kell BEM with two traditional folk songs sung acapella. Pat Butcher returned for her third show appearance and sang two show favourites. Songwriter and musician Steve Gibbs also performed his own unique instrumentals and haunting cover versions of traditional and contemporary classics on Acoustic Guitar. Our first dancer and choreographer Hollie Grant, also a member of Allotrope Elements and choreographer for Whittlesey Street Dance, performed her competition winning dance “Suitcase” and the first half closed with a selection of songs from the talented Barber Shop singers “Hereward Harmony” The second half opened with three songs from the fantastic voice of Shannon Buckton supported for her first number by a high energy dance routine from Whittlesey Street Dance. The energy levels then soared as Allotrope Elements from the Voyager dance company performed a non stop hip hop routine that mesmerised the audience. The sultry tones of the talented Haylie Mai (taking time out from uni studies) with a selection of country, modern and classic rock followed. The stage was reset for “Go With The Flow” a rock covers band who belted out cracking covers of Debbie Harry, Adele and Queen classics, to delight the audience and the closing act was local vocal band “The Islanders” with tracks from Eurythmics, Joan Baez, Spandau Ballet and their own original “Echoes” and rounding off the show with the full company on stage and the audience singing “Let Me Go” Thanks were given by Gary Stewart (Chairman 64

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH GRAND OPENING EVENT FINALLY ARRIVES Last month I had the pleasure of attending the grand opening of the Whittlesey Christian Church. We spoke to Brian Smithyman afterwards Saturday March 8th saw the long awaited opening of the refurbished 200 year old historic building in Broad Street, which in 1997 was purchased by Whittlesey Christian Church to house their growing and vibrant congregation. While the church has seen a series of improvements as each year the congregation and services it provides to the community expands: This £250,000 refurbishment has been the most extensive. The whole project was funded entirely by donations from its own congregation. It’s Pastor and founder Rev. Brian Smithyman, along with his wife Eunice and son Andrew moved from their home in Staffordshire in order to establish the church with an initial congregation of 6 like-minded people. For 23 years prior to moving to Whittlesey, Brian’s clear preaching, counselling and leadership style made him a highly respected and much sought after International Bible Teacher
The Whole Building Has Now Been Transformed
Opened By The Mayor Of Whittlesey, Councillor David Mason The Mayor of Whittlesey, Councillor David Mason along with his wife Ann formally opened the building. The Thanksgiving service which followed began with a vibrant presentation from the church puppeteers, followed later by uplifting singing and a very inspirational speech given by The Mayor. Afterwards people stayed to look around the building and enjoy free tea/coffee cakes and biscuits. In the evening around 130 invited guests were treated to a truly memorable evening of entertainment by the highly acclaimed illusionist Steve Price, followed by an incredible buffet feast provided by Simon Norris (Jones butchers) 66

The most popular word heard on the day was ‘WOW’ From the moment you walk through the door into the foyer you immediately notice the impressive broad staircase leading to the first floor, housing offices and training rooms. The front bow section will be open each weekday for anyone feeling stressed to be able to take a few moments chill out time, and, with his office next door, Brian will be available for counselling should anyone wish to talk. Downstairs the whole building has been opened up to form one seating area for 181 with viewing screens (courtesy of Kellyvision) throughout which enables everyone to clearly see both the songs and what is happening on the platform. This now allows us to continue growing until we embark on the next phase which will see a new church building seating 350 erected on our land to the rear. At this time the current facilities will become a dedicated multi-function area. We look forward to seeing you soon.
