pring is really in the air, and there’s a feeling that summer will be another hot one. This is my favourite time of the year, I just love the sight of flowers blooming, green leaves adorning trees that have been barren since winter, and the promise of lazy days spent outside. This year there is even more colour in Whittlesey, as the WW1 centenary campaign have been busy planting poppies. To find out where, turn to page 62. Last month this year’s Citizen and Young Citizen of the year were announced, and I’m delighted to congratulate Norman Flatt and Eddy Paddock. The full story can be found on page 8, but suffice to say, they are both very worthy winners and once again serve to remind us that we have a wonderful community full of unsung heroes. This month we have some further news on the Circuit of the Fens, a really interesting piece on the connection between Whittlesey and South Africa and some really important information about the Green Wheel diversion (page 40). And that’s not all - we also have a packed events guide, a report on the housing market and a tasty recipe courtesy of Simon Norris. Make sure you read a special report on page 70 by Sir Harry Smith Community College student, Josh Fowler, after visiting Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland. I can’t leave without mentining adorable Daniel Cooper, pictured below reading the April issue. Dylan enjoys our magazines too, but he is more interested in playing, than reading. Perhaps he needs to learn from Daniel’s example... I hope you all have a lovely May, fingers crossed for more sunshine and as always, do keep sending in your emails. Our brand new postbox is an area for you to share your views, whether it’s suggestions for ways Whittlesey can be improved, or comments on the latest issue of Discovering Whittlesea. Whatever it is, we want to hear from you. Email me at natasha@discoveringwhittlesey.co.uk

Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year announced

Citizen of the Year 2013 was Norman Flatt

Norman has worked tirelessly for over 40 years for the Scouting movement in Whittlesey showing commitment and dedication to the cause, he has never looked for any praise for this work and puts his heart and soul into what he does. Much of the work he undertakes is behind the scenes, he also does a great deal of self funding for the scout movement. Many boys have been through the Scouts via Norman, and it is very apparent that none of these have ever gone down the wrong route, but have always succeeded in life. Norman is very well thought of by the town of Whittlesey and last year following a bequest left to the group, organised a trip to Wickstead Park for over 170, comprising of Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Guides, Brownies and rainbows.

Young Citizen of the Year 2013 was Eddy Paddock

Eddy has had an outstanding year this year in his sport - Kickboxing. In October he was selected to represent England at the World Kick Boxing Championships in Italy, Eddy performed brilliantly in the championships and won a World Championship Silver and Bronze medal. In December he was voted Young Martial Artist of the Year at the BCKA National Awards. Eddy was also shortlisted for the Peterborough Evening Telegraph Young Sportsman of the Year award. He is also an outstanding student, who still managed to get into school, despite only arriving back from Italy in the early hours of the school day. On the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of March, Eddy attended the Irish Open Championships in Dublin, which is the largest Martial Arts tournament in the world where all different fighters of all styles and associations attend to compete for this prestigious title. . Eddy achieved two Golds at these championships and was the only fighter to achieve this. Giving him the title of Double Irish 8

Open Champion for his fighting category. Last month, Eddy attended the WKKC English Championships in Birmingham where again he achieved a further two Golds and one Silver. Many thanks to Denise Paddock for supplying the images.

WHITTLESEY & DISTRICT NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Whittlesey & District Neighbourhood Watch consists of over 25 Co-ordinators across the district, we need more ‘Good Neighbours’ who act as a point of contact for your Road or Street….. There is NO big commitment, and it is NOT a time consuming project. We would all like to think we are ‘Good’ neighbours, but at Neighbourhood Watch we like to think we are being ‘A Better Neighbour’. We receive regular updates from our local policing team and hold 4 meetings a year. NHW promotes safe neighbourhoods and we have direct contact with our area policing team. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 17th June 7pm at Grosvenor House, (Whittlesey Town Council Offices/Side Door) Why not become or re-join being a NHW Coordinator. |Policing your area by Geographic Sergeant of Whittlesey Paul Harris An interesting month for the team has seen us working on local concerns and targeting specific problems. Tackling ASB in Coates has seen two recent arrests for persons causing damage. Positive interaction with young adults in Whittlesey, Eastrea and Coates combined with targeted patrols seems to have shown a decrease in incidents throughout Whittlesey, Eastrea and Coates. A party house has been successfully closed for a period of time due to the anti- social nature of its use, and distress it was causing the neighbourhood. Two motorbike riders have been given warnings about their manner of riding and inappropriate use of the roads. Any further incidents and these bikes can be seized. Persons have also been arrested for violent related crimes ranging from fights in the street, to domestic situations. The body worn video cameras the team are wearing are proving very successful. The footage is very clear and shows the impact, both during and after incidents. This capturing of evidence is helping us get more cases to court

10

safeguarding vulnerable victims. The team has also been patrolling the cemetery ( Off Cemetery Rd) and the issues there seem to have decreased which is really pleasing especially when I have received calls from persons using the facility thanking us for helping to make a difference. I have been approached by a few persons over concerns about drugs in the Town. All I can say is if you have any information on this issue please do pass it to me. Like everything the team and I need information to act. Without such intelligence then I cannot direct the resources effectively. Any information passed to the police is treated with the strictest confidence and you will not be compromised. If there is a drugs issue in the town be assured the team will work to stop this as drugs breeds crime and anti-social behaviour . Please do continue to support your local team as you have been. Thank you to the all persons who called Police for recent suspicious activities in the town. Its calls of this nature that help us most to keep you safe.

|Property news According to local independent estate agent, Malcolm James, property is on the up - proven by the fact that they have experienced the "best sales figures, for the first quarter, for over 5 years".

Best sales figures for

5 years!

Property is on the move!

"A

t last the local housing market appears to be on the move, but the frustrating scenario is that we just can not get enough new instructions to replace those recently sold", explained Malcolm, partner of Malcolm James estate agency in Whittlesey. Confidence in the economy is slowly growing, however, as a qualified estate agent valuer, with over 25 years local expertise, it is still a case of local property values being very "price sensitive"; therefore correct valuing is essential and key to getting interest and a sale on your property!

12

The introduction of the governments "help to buy scheme" is helping first time buyers, who are accounting for approximately 40% of new business; along with the "buy- to-let" investor, who are still attracted by the continued increase in yields on their investment. This has had a considerable knock-on effect and this year has seen many properties that were “sticking”, now sell and even at the higher end, there has been considerable movement! It is inevitable that prices will eventually rise, due to the current lack of supply and with the present demand being so evident.

and commercial property basis. So if you are considering moving locally from your current home or into the area, then now could be an ideal and exciting time to move, especially before prices are hiked up?” Malcolm added.

“Currently we are averaging within 96% of any asking price and this we predict will increase, as the year progresses. As we know, Whittlesey is a developing town and there are many new projects in the pipeline, both on a residential

“We remember, from past experiences, it is proven, that in a progressive market the values between the different styles of homes, only get broader! So making a status jump, now, could mean you will be a smart mover? ... Sell low - buy low...or sell high - buy high? Which would you prefer?”

| Local history by Geoff Oldfield

Our connection with South Africa

T

he most obvious connection is, of course, with a town called WHITTLESEA. The Museum has a photograph of the late Dr. D. Logan and family standing by the Town’s name-board. So how did this name appear in a far off land? Go back to the middle of the nineteenth century when our local hero Sir Harry Smith was Governor of the Cape Colony from 1847 until 1852 and the reason becomes obvious. The Town is just North West of Port London and has at present a population of just over 14,000 marginally larger than the Town we live in. This was not the only Township that Sir Harry Smith set out and named in South Africa which remain today. There is HARRISMITH halfway between Johnannesburg and Durban with a population of 28,000. It grew during the diamond rush at Kimberley and became a staging post with shops and hotels springing up. It is popular with tourists wanting to visit the Drakensberg mountains and a convenient refuelling stop for trucks, in fact it boasts being the largest truck stop in the Southern Hemisphere. To complement this Town is LADYSMITH situated in KwaXulu-Natal 230km West of Durban named after Sir harry Smith’s wife whose maiden name was Juana Maria de Los Dolores de Leon. The present population is around 64,000 and Dunlop have a large tyre production factory here. The Town is probably best known for being besieged by the Boers. The garrison under the command of General Sir George White, held out for 118 days from November 1899 until being relieved by Sir General Redvers-Buller. Three thousand British soldiers died defending the Town. A war correspondent for the London Morning Post was present when the siege was lifted, none other than the young Winston Churchill. There is a small museum dedicated to the siege. Then, of course, there was ALIWAL NORTH. The Town is called “Aliwal” after Sir Harry Smith’s successful campaign in India during the First Sikh War, and “North” to differentiate it from Aliwal South which has now been renamed Mossel Bay. The Town was laid out in 1849 sitting 1328m (4357ft) above sea level and has a population of 35,000. The park in the centre is 18

Discovering Whittlesea | May 2014

named Juana Square Gardens after his wife. It probably owes its development to the presence of good water and thermal springs, where Aliwal Spa is located. There was a good ford over the Orange river where it meets the Kraai river over which a timber bridge was built in 1880 to be replaced by the General Hertzog bridge of more substantial construction. The erection of a bridge gave speedier access to Bloemfontein 206km to the North. The Town’s railway station had to close due to lack of use, but it does have a good airfield with three grass runways “safe to be used during daylight”! Tourists are principally attracted to the two hot mineral springs which have a high concentration of various minerals and gases. There is, as you know, a Whittlesey in Australia a few kilometres North of Melbourne but that is, as they say, another story.

| A word from - Revd. Nigel and Revd. Gill Nigel (203676) and Gill (202563)

Thank you everyone who helped to make the Holy Week and Easter Services such wonderful acts of worship. We are sure that this was experienced in all of our churches. Those of us who took part will feel renewed in faith after sharing in Jesus’ pilgrimage to the Cross and His Resurrection. Now we move on to the Feasts of the Ascension and Pentecost and into the rest of the year, to the everyday living out of our faith. We want to challenge each and every one of you. God wants us to do more for Him. He wants you to give Him time. One hour a week (at least) To do something specific. The opening of our churches on a daily basis is enhancing their role as witnesses to faith, as Houses of God. They are available to all as places for quiet prayer and reflection or simply to visit. You are all welcome. We, the people, are the Church, the body of Christ in the world. We are the worshipping heart of our churches as buildings. The parish church continues to have an important and varied role in our contemporary society. It witnesses to a Christian faith which is solid and secure in our lives and those of many others. Our mission as church members is to give time to prayer, worship and service - an hour on Sunday

yes, but also on every day of the week. We do this not just for ourselves but for the good of the whole community in which we live. Morning Prayer or Holy Communion on weekdays lasts 30 minutes; details are available on church notice boards. Many people give more than an hour a week to God and to the wider community. We can all share in God’s mission in the world. “Sev’n whole days, not one in sev’n I will praise thee; In my heart, though not in heav’n I can raise thee. Small it is, in this poor sort To enrol thee: E’en eternity’s too short To extol thee.” (from George Herbert’s Hymn King of Glory, King of Peace) God’s blessing on you all, Revd Nigel and Revd Gill

| Fishing news by Ken Wade The close season on rivers and fenland drains seems to be flying by this year and it will not be that long before we are back on our favourite venues around the Whittlesey area. For now though everyone seems to be having some cracking sport on the many local stillwaters we have available to us. The relatively new Float Fish Farm Fishery seems to be attracting a lot of local anglers with its huge variety of lakes. For the silver fish anglers there are a couple of lakes to try, while for those looking for bigger fish the Two Island pool has been in great form. I have not heard much about the recently open “Big Fish” pool which I am told hold some really big specimens. Railway Lakes situated close to the towns railway station is another water in good form, the big lake has already seen carp to 20lb plus taken while on the small, shallow lake carp have been taken on the poleor waggler with maggot, corn and meat all taking fish. Kingsland has seen 100lb bags being taken on both of

22

Discovering Whittlesea | May 2014

the carp pools, a fishery that rarely lets you down. For a less hectic but never the less productive fishery try Northey Park on the bottom end of the North Bank Road, the Blacketts Pool is in cracking form with red maggot best. For most clubs in the area it has to be Decoy Lakes as your first choice for matches, its already very busy at weekends though so you will need to get booked in quickly now if your club fancied this fishery. Finally do not forget your new 2014/15 rod licence, it was due to be renewed on the 1st April, butn if you have not wet a line in what used to be the old close season and fancy a few hours fishing make sure you buy a licence before you set off. Environment Agency bailiffs have aready been out and about checking local waters and with several bank holidays coming up you can expect to see a bailiff no matter where you fish.

|StreetPride news

1,000,000 seeds sown to enhance our environment Whittlesea Street Pride recently carried out sowing some 500,000 poppy seeds to commemorate the beginning of the First World War, these seeds along with 500,000 wild flower seeds were placed in four flower beds at the far side/Bower of the Manor Field. Fenland District Council gave permission and prepared the beds for us. The funding of the seeds was from many of our very generous sponsors and friends. Not all the seeds will flower this year and some will remain ‘dormant’ for many years. We hope that in the years to come there will be an array of colour and flowers for wildlife and insects to pollinate. We also recently helped Park Lane school plant 10 fruit trees. We are very grateful to all the staff at the Norwich & Peterborough Building Society who have chosen our Group as part of their community engagement program – they will be helping us on occasion to tidy and maintain some of our Gateway projects. During April they have held a ‘raffle’ at the branch to raise funds on behalf of Whittlesea Street Pride. 24

Discovering Whittlesea | May 2014

Our core litter picking remains one of our much focused priorities – and although we will never win the ongoing battle of littering/fly tipping, we will at least keep a status quo on the issue. Since our inception our group have now removed an incredible 35,000 kgs (around 35 tons) of rubbish/litter from our Gateways and Villages – an absolute vast amount in volume terms. If you would like to help us in any way - donate some plants, buy some bulbs, or join us in our clean up events - either contact me or visit http://whittleseastreetpride.wordpress.com

If you would like to help our Town/ Environment – make some new friends and a bit of gentle exercise – everyone is welcome. Roy Gerstner. Chair Whittlesey StreetPride Group t: 01733 208590 e: roy.gerstner@ntlworld.com

WHY DO SOME SUCCEED WHILE OTHERS FAIL?

During our opening event held in March, people were surprised to learn that we had not created greater seating capacity and more rooms in order to raise money by renting them out, or to avoid the expense of building the new church. As a church we did actually need this extra capacity, as we will ultimately need the planned new church. So why are some churches alive and strong, while others are in decline? It is certainly not the much heralded reason ‘that our nation is no longer interested in Christianity’ - If that were true then no church would grow. The answer is found a little closer to home. Because space does not permit me to go into greater detail I am more than happy to meet and talk with anyone wishing to find out more :- Remain Relevant Being courageous enough to ‘think outside the box’ - examine, remove or change any tradition or practice which holds little or no relevance to this generation. I am not advocating creating a ‘nightclub environment or being different just for the sake of it’; we make sure that in being relevant we do not sacrifice meaningfulness on the altar of gimmicks. :- Remain True To Christian Principles This does not mean ramming God down everyone’s throat; but teaching and inspiring the congregation to unashamedly follow the principles of Christianity found in the Bible, whether politicians or society in general agree with them or not. Christianity

was always meant to be ‘a personally chosen way of life’ not just something we do on Sunday, and certainly not something we seek to force on everyone else. :- Remain A Welcoming Place And People Sometimes churches can be cold, hostile, unfriendly places, more concerned about their image or political correctness than people. Churches should be exciting places where people feel safe, accepted, cared for and loved. :- Remain Flexible And Clear In Your Structure Churches, like buildings, should have ‘permanent aspects’ to their operational structure, because they have a safety and strength function; for us this includes love, unity and setting the bar of leadership high requiring our team to lead by example not just words. But there must also be aspects which can easily be added or changed in order to better develop its people’s talents or serve the community, in the same way that a growing family will knock down internal walls to create more space.

| A word from - Cllr Martin Curtis Last month I made the decision that I would stand down as Leader of the County Council at the annual meeting in May. This was not an easy decision, I have had a fantastic year where the Council has achieved a huge amount - securing hundreds of millions of pounds worth of Government investment, meeting our savings targets and moving forward on some major projects, including Kings Dyke crossing. There was absolutely no pressure on me to stand down, but the more I looked forwards to a new system of governance where decisions are made by committee, the more I realised I would be involved in dealing with internal issues about how decisions are made rather than getting on and delivering for you the resident. Those are not my strengths, so I have decided to let someone else take on the role. I can’t help but be political in this. But the truth is that the decision to move to a committee system was forced on the council by the opposition groups.

26

Discovering Whittlesea | May 2014

We offered a complete review of our structures, a more open minded approach, based on what is the best way of serving you, but we had this decision forced on us with no proper analysis and thought. There is a feeling amongst some that committee systems are more democratic than cabinets, but they are also more bureaucratic, they slow down decision-making and create less dynamic environments - and in a fast changing world, organisations have to be dynamic. My own view is that it is the quality of decision making that matters. However, I will still be serving Whittlesey North and Kingsmoor Ward as your Councillor, making sure your voice is heard in Shire Hall and Fenland about the issues that matter to you. mjc@martincurtis.net Tel: 07887808442 Facebook: whittleseynorth www.martincurtis.net Twitter: @cllrmcurtis

Garden Jobs for

ith the bulbs fading and the herbaceous border growing in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching. Spring flowering plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding. It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime as the lawn will love the warmer temperatures this month brings. If you’re in the garden this month you can be getting on with the following:

• Protect tender plants

- Late frosts could still cause damage to young plants.

• Earth up potatoes and promptly plant any still remaining

- When potatoes have emerged a few inches pull earth around the plant with a rake. This will give the plant more soil to grow in and improves drainage.

• Plant out summer bedding

- Lift out old plants, run a fork through the soil and add a good fertiliser before replanting summer plants.

• Collect rainwater • Hoe off weeds

- Dig out tough perennial weeds with a fork. If you’re treating them with a weed killer remember to catch them at the start of flowering to get the best results.

• Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm days • Mow lawns weekly • Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils and other spring flowering bulbs

Charity night huge success Vesuvio in Whittlesey held a very special themed night at the end of March. Their popular Las Vegas evening raised valuable funds for Heal. Local Sgt. Paul Harris added: “The charity night recently held at Vesuvios was a fantastic night and a real community spirited event, with over £850 pounds raised. This will provide a school in Badrachulam, India with fresh safe drinking water. “I visited this school on my recent trip and over three hundred children will benefit from this, and at 40 degree plus temps, a safe drink is surely a basic human right. Maria and Peppe were fantastic and they worked tirelessly to make this happen for me, which I am very grateful for.” Maria, Peppe and their staff would like to thank everyone that took part in the fun charity night. For more information about the charity can be found at www.heal.co.uk

The issue of Car Parking at the Surgery was raised at the meeting of the PPG on Monday 24 March. Did you know that research into parking facilities at GP surgeries and hospitals in Fenland shows that the New Queen Street surgery has the most parking spaces? There are 65 parking spaces. The calculation of the spaces required was carefully carried out at the pre planning stage of the new surgery; allowing for the maximum number of staff and patients at any one time there should still be empty spaces allowing for visiting medical representatives to be able to park on site. So you may ask why, on occasion, is the car park full and it impossible to park a vehicle? The Car Park is there for use by the Patients and Staff of the Surgery and Pharmacy. Unfortunately some people do abuse the use of the car park and have been seen to park and walk across the road to do their shopping, returning some considerable time later. The staff, including the Doctors, park their cars at the furthest point away from the surgery 32

Discovering Whittlesea | May 2014

to allow patients with mobility problems to park nearest to the surgery. Please be considerate when you park, don’t block these cars in – you may be the emergency that a Doctor needs to go to and seconds could be the difference between life and death – if their car is blocked in. There is also an Emergency Door at the Surgery. There is a sign adjacent to this door requesting No Parking in front of it; Please respect the sign; should an ambulance be required this is where it needs to park to enable the ambulance personnel access to the building.

What is the solution to the problem?

Please be considerate when parking at the Surgery. Once you have been seen by the Health Practitioner and/or been to the Pharmacy please don’t leave your car in the car park whilst you go shopping – all car parks in Whittlesey are Free.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better.

Organ Health part 1...

By Mayur Mistry & Ubhi Mistry (Registered Osteopaths) This month we start a series of articles looking at our organs. Being hidden inside our bodies, they tend to be ‘out of sight, out of mind’. Subsequently we seem to them and focus on the what we can see, i.e. our hair, skin, nails, muscles, etc. It is our mission over the next few months to bring the organs into sight and help you understand how to care for them. Today we start by considering the general principles that govern organ health. These principles are similar to various principles we live our daily lives by. As individuals need: 1) the freedom to move around, 2) good quality air to breath, 3) a reliable water source into and out of our homes, 4) good communication with our surroundings (be them neighbours, family, friends or work colleges), 5) a ranges of tasks to keep us occupied. Our organs are no different. The freedom to move Movement is a life force that all living things require. Imagine if we were locked in a room for longer than a few hours. We would get grumpy, tired, irritable and a poor productivity. The same is true for our organs, they like to move and their productivity depends on it. The air we breathe We breathe air, our cells (i.e. what makes up our organs) breathe fluid. The air we breathe is dissolved into our bodily fluids and it is this fluid our cells breathe. It may sound strange but remember as a foetus we breathed in amniotic fluid for 9 months. The quality of our bodily fluids will thus determine the health of our cells. Think of a runner running in a polluted traffic filled city road or the open countryside. Which environment will produce the best time? Reliable water flow The flow of water to our homes is important. If the water flow is slow or obstructed we start to accumulate water. Accumulated water can becomes stagnant, smelly and toxic (think of the quality of water in a still pond compared to a flowing river). In the same way, our cardiovascular & 34

Discovering Whittlesea | May 2014

lymphatic system replenish the fluid surrounding our cells. If these systems are hindered then our bodily fluid becomes stagnate which can lead to the accumulation of mild toxins. You can appreciate that a cell breathing in mild toxins is not likely to yield positive outcomes. Good communication Each part of our body is but a cog in a wheel. If one cog starts to do its own thing, then the whole system will be affected. For this reason our organs communicate with each other via hormones and chemicals released into the blood stream. These communicating chemicals are produced in various organs / tissues throughout the body. Thus an ill functioning organ will have an effect on the rest of the body systems. The question is how strong is that effect and how long do we allow it to carry on? Diversity This point, is best emphasised with an extreme example. Say we eat pizza and chips every day all our lives. Our digestive system becomes very good at digesting the components of pizza and chips. Great. But then we decide to move to China, there is no pizza and chips there. How will our system cope with dumplings, stir-fry or duck pancakes? The answer unfortunately is poorly as we have trained it to be a specialist rather than a generalised. As humans we are generalist, therefore our systems need variety to give them the tools to cope with an ever changing environment. Unfortunately, in the modern world we seem to encourage a specialist approach to most of our tasks. This is certainly easier & more convenient. The bigger question is, is it better? Take care and enjoy the changing beauty of late spring.

On 2 April 2014, the Environment Agency held a public drop-in event to give the community in Whittlesey the opportunity to ask questions about the Whittlesey (Nene) Washes South Barrier Bank project. They would like to extend their thanks to everyone who took the time to visit and look at the work plans for the next two years. In 2013, work began on the £26-million bank improvement works. The work involves reshaping the slope of the bank and placing extra material at the base and the building of a wave wall at Stanground. The scheme is taking place over three years and has been split into phases. The first phase of works - between Ring’s End at Guyhirn and Poplar House Farm - began in July 2013. This phase will be completed in autumn 2014. The second phase of works will take place at two locations. Starting in May 2014, work will take place between Ball Bridge at Whittlesey and Stanground. From July 2014 work will start between Poplar House Farm and Bassenhally until November 2014. The project will be completed by November 2015. Green Wheel diversion While the works take place, it will be necessary for public safety to divert the Green Wheel cycle route between Ball Bridge in Whittlesey and Stanground. The diversion route (shown on the map above) will be in place from 1 May 2014 until 31 November 2014. The diversion will be along the North Bank between Millennium Bridge and Peterborough. Public footpath diversion The public footpath diversion is still in place between Ring’s End and Poplar House Farm and will remain in place for the duration of the works and will be reinstated in December 2014. The public footpath – Nene Way – has been diverted 40

from the crest to the bottom of the bank which is clearly marked out by fencing. This will so be the case between Poplar House Farm and Bassenhally from July 2014. Take care when using the diversion and please keep dogs on a lead for your pet’s safety and for the safety of construction staff. The Environment Agency would like to apologise for any inconvenience the diversions may cause and thank the community for their understanding while this important work is carried out. If you would like to find out more about the project, please contact our Public Liaison Officer, Monica Stonham at WhittleseyWashesProjectEA@gmail.com or on 07577 470803.

12 Years a Slave

New opening times: Sun-Thu 12-8pm & Fri-Sat 12-9pm

12 YEARS A SLAVE is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, WE NOW RENT TV SERIES BOX SETS Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by MAY RELEASES a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well • THE RAILWAY MAN • FRANKENSTEIN • PARANORMAL ACTIVITY • GRUDGE MATCH as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, THE MARKED ONES • THE WOLF OF WALL STREET but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life. Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Lupita Nyong’o, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt, and Alfre Woodard. 31/05/2014 Soon after its world premiere last year, 12 Years a Slave was widely described as the best film that has yet been made about American slavery. The new film from the British director Steve McQueen is an adaptation of the memoirs of Solomon Northup, and whilst there have been films about the American slave trade in some way, films that are actually about American slavery are vanishingly rare. McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave unpicks slavery’s alldebasing power-plays and hints at a brand new genre of film. In short, this is a must-watch for this month.

Key messages from the March 2014 Budget Pensions

Significant changes and simplification have been made for people in ‘defined-contribution’ schemes. Some changes have already taken place with others proposed for April 2015. In the past, pensioners had access to 25% of the fund value as a tax free lump sum; the remainder had to provide a regular guaranteed income. The relaxation offers the opportunity to take the entire remaining fund (subject to tax), some people already have a plan for such a situation – others might need help to choose. Although, it will not be necessary to choose an annuity, it might still be the best choice depending on a variety of factors. It is important to choose wisely, as many choices once made cannot be changed later. Those with very large pension funds may suffer from certain reduced allowances. If you are concerned by this or might be in future, get your planning in early and speak to an independent financial adviser quickly.

New Individual Savings Accounts (NISA)

From 1st July 2014, the personal allowance for tax efficient savings will increase to £15,000 and greater flexibility in the use of underlying investments also come into play. There are age limits for certain types of investments – again take advice before becoming fully engaged.

Ask the expert today

Income Tax

Personal allowances increase to £10,000 for tax year 2014/15. For savings income, the starting rate of 10% has been increased to £2,880 for 2014/15 and will be 0% for the first £5,000 from the following year. This is an allowance that, in my opinion, is under utilised by many.

Corporation Tax

This reduces to 21% for 2014/15 with plans to eventually reduce to 20%. This is particularly good news for business owners.

Inheritance Tax (IHT)

No change here, just £325,000 per individual before 40% applies to many residual estates. In many cases IHT can be significantly reduced or even eliminated through adherence to good advice. To my mind, IHT can almost be classed as a voluntary tax; if you or someone you know might be affected – ask for advice from a qualified professional.

Family problems with Social services (care proceedings)

Bringing children up can be difficult, and some times the problems which are encountered can get out of control and social services become involved.

This does not always mean that your children will be removed from your care. Social services are under an obligation to work with families to try and resolve problems, and removing children from parents is a last resort. This can be a frightening experience and it is important to take advice from a children’s panel solicitor at the earliest opportunity. The most common reason for social services taking concerns about your children to court is because parents do not cooperate with them to try and resolve the problems. Taking early legal advice means that you know where you stand from the start and can be advised on the best course of

48

Discovering Whittlesea | May 2014

action to take to solve the problem.

Sometimes it is not possible to resolve the problems, social services must provide you with notice that they are considering issuing care proceedings. They will send you a (Public Law Outline) PLO letter inviting you to attend a meeting with your solicitor. You must take this letter seriously, failure to do so will result in the matter being placed before the court. If social services take the matter to court, you have the right to challenge what they are saying however it is vital that you obtain the correct advice. Changes in the law mean that care proceedings must be concluded within 26 weeks, therefore if you do not act quickly; it can often be too late. Free Legal Aid is available for all areas of law dealing with social services.

Good samaritan

Whilst taking my jack russell dog for a run on the Manor one Monday morning, another dog also off the lead and who’s owner had no control over it, chased my dog across the Manor and out the main gates on to the road. Fortunately she ran towards her home along the busy Station Road. A very kind lorry driver (so I was told by my neighbour) stopped his lorry and caught her and put her in a front garden then shut the gates to keep her safe where I found her. I would like to thank this mystery lorry driver for being so kind and possibly saving my dog from causing an accident or even being in one! Thank you so much for your kindness From a very relieved dog owner.

Local man wins Vegas trip playing free Texas Holdem Poker

For almost three years Rose and Chris at The New Crown in Whittlesey have been supporting locals on Monday, Wednesday and Sunday evenings by hosting FoPP LPPL (Federation of Poker Players, Live Pub Poker League) Texas Holdem Poker Tournaments. As Chris and Rose are the only pub in Cambs hosting these poker nights, the pub is affiliated to the Lincolnshire LPPL League. Each night the players participate in a free Texas Holdem poker game and gain points depending upon their final position on the evening. These points are added to the Lincolnshire LPPL Leader Board consisting of 120+ players. Every two months the top 40 players are invited to attend a ‘Regional Final’ where players battle it out for points which can be exchanged for prizes in the LPPL shop. Furthermore players are also awarded points depending upon their final position in the Regional Final. These points are accumulated during the course of the year and at the end of the 12 month period the top 40% of players in the Lincolnshire Regional League table are then invited to the annual LPPL UK Poker Pub Championships attended by some 450+ players from around the UK. More recently, in a move encouraged to gain more local players Phil and Maria Quinn of the Boat Inn, 2 Ramsey Road, Whittlesey took over hosting Wednesday evenings. This year’s final was held at Southport and Andy Tierney, and Len Stanley represented Whittlesey / Lincolnshire. It was an event spread over three days with different competitions held every day. Again this was a free event to attend. Andy Tierney reached the quarter final of the heads-up competition and Len Stanley gained first place in a long drawn out game lasting 12½ hours. His prize for this position is an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas where, on the day after arrival, he will be joining a private Texas Holdem Poker game of 20 players. The winner of that game is then given entry to a $10,000 WSOP Event with the potential to win $1m.

Vericool For Schools Circuit of The Fens 27th July 2013 at 12.00pm

Plans for this years Circuit of the Fens race continues to advance at a hectic pace. As a reminder The Vericool for Schools Circuit of the Fens, is a one day race held on the 27th of July 2014 at 12.00 pm starting and finishing in Whittlesey town centre. For this year there have been changes to the town centre and main race route. The town centre route has been revised to take in a larger 4 mile finishing circuit with some challenging elements. These include Drybread Road, the race should come through the town centre every 12 Minutes at very roughly 3.45 pm depending on weather conditions. The support race is due to finish in the town centre at approximately 3.00 pm. The elite race will be televised on Eurosport although unfortunately not live as it is the final day of the Tour De France in Paris. The organisers have had some really exciting entries in including one from and Olympic Gold Medallist. The race falls one week before the commonwealth games and as such we are likely to get some international stars participating. On the Saturday there will be 4 sportive rides over 130miles, 130KM, 32 miles and a family ride over 10 miles. Entries can be found at http:// www.wheelsinwheels.com/Fens/Fens_sportive_ event.html and Whittlesey cycles for the family ride. This year the event has its own face book page where readers can get regular updates including maps and information about the route. The Facebook page can be found at https://www.facebook.com/ CircuitOfFensEliteCycleRace If you feel you can help in any way including helping on the day it would be really appreciated and may give you the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the UKs top athletes. NEW FIRE ENGINE FOR WHITTLESEY

WHITTLESEY Fire Station is one of the first oncall crews in Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) in more than three decades to receive a brand new fire engine. The new appliance, costing approximately £240,000, is called a light rescue pump and was delivered to the station in March. Although it looks very similar to a traditional fire engine, carrying 1,800 litres of water and a variety of ladders, it also holds additional equipment that provides an enhanced rescue capability for road traffic collisions, and will enable an improved service to rural communities. Area Commander Maurice Moore said: “This is the first time in many years that we’ve been in a position to offer the best available appliances to our on-call staff and this is thanks to our progressive approach to managing our resources and making efficient savings. Providing this cutting-edge equipment, appliances and training for our staff shows our dedication to continue to strive and develop and in turn, means the residents of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough will receive the best fire cover we can offer.” The light rescue pump, which replaces the older fire engine, provides the on-call crew with new pieces of kit to assist with road traffic collisions and rescues, which include air mats, rams, specialist stabilising equipment, an electrically operated vehicle-mounted winch and a HGV platform. Photograph below: Whittlesey crew with their new fire engine.

NEWS FROM THE R.B.L. This last month has seen the Whittlesey Branch, involved in conjunction with “Whittlesey in Bloom” and “Street Pride”, in planting Flanders Poppy seeds at memorials in the area. Special planters have been placed at the memorials in Whittlesey, Coates and Eastrea and we now wait to see how the poppies progress. This is one of the collective ideas put forward to commemorate the start of the 1914 – 1918 World War. Extra work is required on the concrete path around the Coates war memorial and we are looking at different ways to fund this work. If anyone is interested in donating their time, materials or even financially we would be most grateful and would suggest that they contact 62

Visit to Auschwitz

by Josh Fowler

On 26th February, Bradley, myself and our teacher Mr Carter were able to go on a visit to the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. It was an experience that I will always look back on and remember. It was easily the most harrowing experience of my life. The minute we landed in Krakow, we were taken on a coach to a Jewish cemetery . Knowing how the Nazis had treated this cemetery disturbed us. We learnt that when the Nazis came to the town of Oswiecim (later renamed Auschwitz by the Nazis), they had taken the headstones and reused them as paving slaps. This complete disrespect for the dead was shocking; on no level should this hatred happen to anyone. Looking around the graveyard was chilling, especially knowing that I could have walked over a body without realising, since the stones were not put back in the correct place. This was because no-one knew where the correct place was. After looking around the cemetery for about an hour, we moved to Auschwitz 1, the main and original concentration camp. After seeing such iconic pictures of the gate, barracks and barbed wire, it was a surreal feeling to be standing there to view what happened. Whilst we were there, we had a guided tour around the camp and barracks. The places that affected me the most was seeing displays on either side of me, fifty metres long, full of the hair of Jewish prisoners. The shoes, suitcases and belonging of those who were brought there also struck a chord. That they had been lied to so thoroughly was sickening; it was obvious they thought they were going away to live, not to be killed. Probably the most chilling part of this was seeing the places they were murdered, such as where

70

Discovering Whittlesea | May 2014

disruptive prisoners were taken to be suffocated, alone in an air tight room, or starved to death. The scale of the gas chambers was also disturbing, as they were easily the length of a tennis court, and perhaps twice as wide. We realised that thousands had died there, within minutes, on the orders of officers. Once we had finished looking around Auschwitz 1, we were taken to Birkenau, the main death camp. To say it was huge is an understatement, as it stretched for miles; as far as our eyes could see. To the side of the railway platform was an old train wagon, used to transport around eighty Jews. Going inside the barracks was also shocking. Toilets were no more primitive than in Roman times, and bunk beds were designed to hold up to 12, like slave ships in the 17th century. The realisation of how cramped their lives were before their deaths hit home. We walked thereafter towards the site where the gas chambers had been, as the Germans had destroyed them as soon as they knew Allied forces were coming. They lay in ruins, unlike the others we had visited. They were even bigger than the earlier chambers, and we were able to see from the wreckage that still stands the rooms in which thousands could have been killed in minutes. We proceeded to go into the other end of Birkenau, where there were hundreds of photographs of the people who had died there, a reminder of the innocent lives lost. It brought back the realisation that they, like us, were ordinary people with families. That evening, we were given a thought-provoking sermon by an English Rabbi. This ended our intriguing but ultimately deeply upsetting day at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
