Discovering

I

t might be raining currently as I write, but we’ve had some lovely weather these last few months and we’ve finally christened our new BBQ (Dylan was more interested in playing with his new ball pit than anything else). I also enjoyed a unique gig at the beginning of June, held in the spectacular St. Mary’s Church. The night was a celebration of local talent, with Nick Corney, Gavin Hyde and my husband performing to a grateful crowd. The muscians not only provided wonderful entertainment, but also raised money for the Church. I hope it will just be the start of many more. We are very lucky in Whittlesey to have some very talented muscians (of course I would say that, being married to one). This month sees the return of the Circuit of the Fens cycle race on the 27th of July. I know there will be some disruption to the town centre, but I still believe it’s a wonderful event to be part of and we should show our support. For the latest information please turn to page 56. We also have some exciting news that the Sunday Market has brand new owners. This is positive news as the market is a great asset to our town. See page 28 for more information. If you’re aged 15-19 (or have children who are!) and need help finding out about local career opportunities, head down to the Careers Festival on Peterborough Embankment. Taking place from 9:30am to 5:00pm on Thursday 10th July. More details about the careers festival can be found on page 12. Finally next month will mark our tenth anniversary - so watch this space for a special issue celebrating the rise of Discovering Whittlesea. If you would like to share your comments on the magazine, perhaps you’ve recently moved to the area and find the publication a really helpful introduction, or you are a business and have found advertising yourself here has helped it flourish, we would love to hear from you. You can email me at natasha@discoveringwhittlesey.co.uk, call the office on 01733 200609, or write to us at: Discovering Whittlesea, Benwick Road Industrial Estate, Benwick Road, Whittlesey, PE7 2HD. Until then we wish you a lovely July, and fingers crossed for more sunshine.

|Community news WHITTLESEY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SUMMER QUIZ SHEET The Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee are continually trying to raise funds to keep the lovely lights up to date every year. We are now in the process of updating the old bulbs, by replacing them with LED, which are much brighter and require less maintenance. To do this, obviously costs money. I have had lots of comments regarding the lovely lights we added last year in the Queens Street Surgery car park trees. We are hoping to add more lights around the town ready for this Christmas. The Committee would like to thank the people of Whittlesey for their continuing support over the years and hope they will continue. You can do this by purchasing (just £1 each) A Summer Quiz Sheet. These are now on Sale, you can get them from Wrights of Whittlesey, in Market Street or Inspirations (Jenny Parker) in Market Street. The closing date for the Quiz is 30th September 2014. Once again, thank you for your support.

By Pauline Edge Christmas Lights Committee Ladysmith W.I. members appreciated the lovely weather which added to the pleasure of the mediterranean themed birthday party in June. Later in the month a 'Try It' evening was greatly enjoyed at the Indoor Bowling Centre in Station Road, Whittlesey. For the July meeting there will be a humorous talk by Linda Scholes entitled "Everything I always wanted to know about sex?!" Invitations have been extended to other W.I.'s in the area to come along and join us as this will probably be a very entertaining evening!!! New members and guests are always welcome at our meetings and the July meeting is 7.30pm on 8th July in St Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane. For more information phone Liz 01733 689599.

SHSCC Library Volunteers Nominated for Young Person of the Year Award (YOPEY) This year, three of our students have been shortlisted for a YOPEY award. The YOPEY awards recognise young people for positive things they have done in the community or in their colleges. This year, Owen Davis, Lily Andrew-Martin and Daniel Flack, all Year Nine pupils at SHSCC, have been shortlisted for the award. Owen was nominated for helping Year Six pupils in their transition to secondary school, giving up his free time to help out in the college and for attending cadets outside of school. Lily was also nominated for helping Year Six pupils in their transition to secondary school, but also for helping to raise £1489 for the library by helping to arrange several Book Fairs. Lily is also very prominent in after-school clubs and plays a huge part in helping younger students to volunteer for new things. Daniel was nominated for giving up his free time to help out in the college library, for helping Year Six pupils in their transition

to secondary school, and for training to be a Cybermentor. Through his volunteering, Daniel helps students who have been being bullied online. All three students will now be invited to the YOPEY awards ceremony, held at Ely Cathedral later in the year. We give our huge congratulations and support to these students and hope they come away with an award!

|Policing your area by Geographic Sergeant of Whittlesey Paul Harris As the world cup gets well underway the team has been in communication with the local pubs to see what they have planned and the measures in place. Government extensions to licences for pubs may mean they utilise these to stay open later and facilitate the late kick off times here in the UK. However how far will the three lions go in the tournament is the big unanswered question... We will aim to be visible and I have planned in some licencing visits with Fenland District Council over the next few weeks. Crime over the area has been very opportunistic in its approach no patterns have emerged which is good. I have completed some night shifts and I am pleased to see that people seem to have listened to messages passed about tightening up security. High hedges at front gardens cut back, rear gates locked and most

noticeable sat nav’s and laptops not left on display inside cars. The local PCSO’s have held events up at Sir Harry Smith school bike coding and regularly been down the Manor skate park engaging with young persons. Ian has also been on patrol with the street scene officer trying to clear up litter and graffiti, shame to see that the new wooden benches at the Manor have a fair amount of graffiti on them.... Over the last month we have arrested persons for assaults including domestic assaults, theft and drink drive. One person has also been to court and found guilty of assaulting a constable. Looking forward to seeing you all out on the streets on the 26th and 27th July for the big cycle event, which will be bigger and better than last year thanks to all the hard work by those involved.

in a Dragons’ Den style challenge and recruitment experts will be on hand in the CV boot camp offering one-to-one advice on making successful job applications. Last year the Careers Fair was attended by over 100 businesses and training providers and over 2000 young people. In response to positive feedback received from both schools and exhibitors, the 2014 event is being extended to young people from a much wider area, with students from Peterborough, Fenland, Rutland, King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire schools attending throughout the day. Older students, parents and carers are welcome to attend the event from 3:00pm to find out about opportunities for young people in the area. Admission is free and there is no need to pre-book. Supported by The Skills Show, the European Social Fund and the National Careers Service, the Festival aims to help young people consider their career options, raise their aspirations and ensure they have the right skills needed to gain employment in the local area. | A word from - your Mayor Dave Mason Summertime is here for all to enjoy and I am sure that many will travel far and wide during the coming months to take holidays relaxing in good weather in places old and new. But what of Whittlesey and our surrounding villages which have their own unique features of beauty which give pleasure to many who walk , who visit places of interest, play and recreational areas, who enjoy cycling in the countryside, fish or hunt, sail on our waterways or simply drive a car around the area. Local groups spend hours and hours caring for our countryside and open spaces. Street Pride are a typical example of a group of volunteers who give up as much of their time as possible in clearing litter from our streets, tidying up those lovely boats full of plants which adorn the entrances to our town and villages and caring for other beauty spots. If you are a regular reader of this magazine you cannot have missed the articles and photographs inserted by this splendid group. The Whittlesey in Bloom team are relatively newly formed but have made great strides in that short time weeding and planting such places as the entrance to the Manor Leisure Centre to name but one, tending the hanging baskets in the town centre and encouraging young people in our schools to appreciate and develop their horticultural skills. Our Street Scene Officers patrol our highways and by-ways giving advice to persons passing by on maintaining clean streets, public places and places of recreation. Another organisation that can often be seen on our trunk roads clearing litter, cutting back long grass and gathering up debris are the Community Payback Team. Members of this group are not exactly volunteers, they are persons who have fallen foul of the law and are now repaying a debt to society. They are strictly supervised and assigned a variety of projects but I can vouch from personal experience that their work rate is commendable. In the Spring St Andrews churchyard was in major need of a facelift, shrubs and trees needed cutting back, gravestones were becoming obscured by masses of wild bushes and the paths on the north and west sides of the church were becoming covered with moss. After two visits, the churchyard was transformed in a manner that the Churchwardens and others would never have achieved. The Whittlesey Town Council has a Projects Committee that work extremely hard to provide new play equipment in our open spaces, monitor the provision of hanging baskets and oversee 14

the use of over one hundred allotments in New Road. Regular visits are made to the allotments to ensure that they are being worked properly, to ensure that adequate water supplies are provided and to answer any queries brought to them by allotment owners. These are the unsung heroes who work in conjunction with the official bodies such as the Environment Agency, RSPB and Fenland District Council to provide us with the pleasures that William Blake spoke of in his famous hymn “Jerusalem” when describing England as “that green and pleasant land.” But what of the rest of us, what can we do to assist in albeit a modest way to preserve the high standards of our town and villages? If we have a garden the majority of householders like to at least keep their surrounds neat and tidy. Others, particularly those with time to spare, throw themselves into designing ornate areas, cut their grass regularly, weed their borders and experiment with new plants and shrubbery. But how many can honestly say that do not drop litter on the pavements when they think that nobody is watching or leave cans and bottles on the grass in recreational areas? The majority of dog owners are very responsible citizens who clear up after their dogs but others let their animals off the lead and are either oblivious to what happens next or just do not care? A little thought from all of us would make a tremendous difference and support all those groups who strive to give pleasure to others. Finally, congratulations to all in the past month who have organised commemorative events to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-day landings in Normandy which precipitated the end of the Second World War in Europe and to all those who marked Armed Forces Day. The British, in my opinion, are unsurpassed when it comes to organising events and Whittlesey too has much to be proud of. Your next opportunity to celebrate a public event in the town occurs on Sunday 27 July when we host the second “Circuit of the Fens” cycling festival and I hope to see as many of you as possible on the day. Till next time…….

SIMON’S RECIPE OF

THE MONTH

Prepare to be Amazed at the Whittlesey Festival You’ll be absolutely amazed at the Whittlesey Festival this year on Sunday 07 September from 10.00am – 5.00pm where you’ll see highly amusing and skilled street performers ‘Phillipe and Phillope’. Their unique act includes walking on stilts whilst riding a bike – yes that’s right whilst riding a bike, juggling, circus skills and lots more. They always attract a lot of attention wherever they go and we can’t wait to see them at the Festival again this year, it’s certainly a sight not to be missed. Those of you who have been to the festival in previous years will have experienced the excitement and buzz of the event as and this year will be no exception. Prepare to have your breath taken away by the World War II fly past on the day. This is such an amazing experience and it certainly brings a tear to the eye as a poignant reminder of what generations before sacrificed for us. The Festival attracts over 7,000 people from far and wide and will start at 10am with a parade from the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street. Once the parade reaches the Market Square the Festival will be officially opened by the Mayer of Whittlesey Councillor David Mason. There’s something for everyone with a huge variety of stalls and many attractions. Children can enjoy fairground rides – some of which are free, puppet shows, climbing walls, bouncy castle, Victorian Swing Boats, free face painting and much more. Take a walk back in time with the awesome display of vintage cars along Market Street and Broad Street and why not pop into the Craft Fair at the Childers Club in Station Road. Here you can see traditional crafts being made with many interesting and unique items for sale. The Market Square and surrounding streets will be a hive of activity with singers, musicians and dancers with something to suit everyone’s taste. The ever popular Peterborough Highland Band together with other pipe bands will be an incredible part of the programme for the day. Don’t forget to enter your baby into the Beautiful Baby Competition on the day at the Ivy Leaf Club and to visit the amazing Schools Art Exhibition at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street. For more information about the Festival please contact Pauline Edge on 01733 208414 or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005.

Over the next 3 months I will be sharing with you some of my favourite BBQ recipes, If you have Simon Norris, never thought about J Jones Butchers BBQing a boneless shoulder of lamb, now is the time. Delicious and easy to prepare.

BBQ Shoulder of Lamb Ingredients:

Half or Whole shoulder of lamb, (ask us to bone out in the shop)

For the Rub:

Grated Garlic; Ground Coriander; Crushed Black Pepper; Fresh Rosemary; Oregano; Onion Powder;Garlic Powder; Salt; Sugar

Instructions:

1. To begin, make up the rub, no measures here, just go with your instinct. I like more garlic and less Rosemary, but this is just a preference. 2. Score the fat on the outside and stab the lamb a few times with a knife either side. This helps the rub to penetrate the meat better. 3. Apply the rub all over the lamb, not forgetting the sides. 4. At this point, i always put a few long metal skewers through the meat, this will help keep it together and make it easier to turn on your BBQ. 5. BBQ indirectly for the first 25 mins, This means not directly over a flame, put the lid on your BBQ and leave it. 6. After 25 mins, move your lamb over the flame for a a couple of mins each side to add some colour. 7. Remove, loosely cover with foil and leave to rest for 10 mins. 8. Carve and serve with Pitta bread and salad. (I always make a salsa of cucumber, mint, yogurt and red chilli as a dressing for the lamb, Lovely flavour and adds a nice kick) July 2014 | Discovering 17

Whittlesea

| Local history by Geoff Oldfield

The Town Hall (part one)

W

e are so used to going round the Town admiring the nicely sculptured stone plaques set into building indicating the year they were built. These can be misleading however. Take for instance the former Parish Room of St. Mary’s Church in Station Road. The date on the porch clearly states 1901 which was when the porch was built, the main building was actually erected in 1899. A more glaring misleading example is displayed on the Town Hall. In faience tiles across the front are the numbers 1-8-5-7, but the building was actually erected in 1825. The Governors of the Town Revenues wanted somewhere permanent to house their four fire engines and the hoses and buckets. They decided to erect a building in the Almshouse Yard adjacent to the Black Bull in Almshouse Street (now Market Street) to accommodate them and provide two meeting rooms over. The plan of the building has not survived, but from the specification we know that on the front facing the street there were three large windows on the first floor and four pairs of doors to the engine houses. A grander pair of doors was situated between these to serve a central passageway. Mr. Russell, a builder in St Mary’s Street, Whittlesey was given the contract to erect the building, which he did for £315. The Governors decided to call the new building ‘The Town Hall’ and offered the meeting rooms to those who wished to use them. As the Magistrates were going to use the building, a prison cell was provided to house those awaiting trial. John Brown was appointed hall keeper at £5.25 per annum. There were still two occupied almshouses on the site constantly in need of repair.

18

Discovering Whittlesea | July 2014

In 1838 it was decided to build three units in the town hall yard for the temporary confinement of prisoners awaiting trial for which the Chief Constable was charged £20 per annum. A portion of the land was ;eased to the adjoining owner to enable him to erect a cellar and larder. This lease was never called in and the land was lost to the Town Hall. To enable the caretaker to live on site a cottage was erected in 1839 by Mr. Bennett for £45. In 1843, gas lighting was installed to the main rooms of the Town Hall to replace the oil lamps. We now return to the date - 1857 - set in the front elevation. The Governors decided to raise the roof and improve the building generally. Mr. Richard Reynolds Rowe, a Cambridge Architect, was entrusted with the task of preparing drawings and supervising the alterations which were carried out by Messrs Bennett & Sons for £257 producing the building we see today. The fire engines had to be moved to temporary accommodation, of course, while the building work was being carried out. The renovated building was not without its problems. An echo was experienced in the meeting rooms, the ventilation was playing up and by 1865 the roof was leaking as well. The almshouses in the yard were in a very ruinous state and it was said that occupants, when in bed, were in danger of being burnt by being so close to the fire. It was agreed to pay Edward Fitzjohn £6 to pull them down. This left room to extend to hallkeeper’s cottage and build two privies - one for the exclusive use of the Governors and their friends. | A word from - Revd. Nigel and Revd. Gill Nigel (203676) and Gill (202563)

On October 3rd at 7.30 p.m. in Holy Trinity Church, Coates, Bishop John Flack will administer confirmation. Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey at which you affirm for yourself the faith into which you have been baptized and your intention to live a life of committed discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the confirming bishop. The Church also asks God to give you power through the Holy Spirit to enable you to live in the way of Jesus Christ. When you were baptized as a child, your parents and godparents were asked to declare publicly on your behalf that they believed in God and that they would bring you up to follow Jesus. They were asked to answer, on your behalf, that you had decided to turn away from everything which is evil or sinful and instead to turn towards Christ. At confirmation, you will renew these decisions and promises. The declarations made by you will be made in front of the church congregation; the local Christian community will promise to support you and pray for you. The bishop will make the sign of the cross on your forehead with oil. This is a sign of the outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit. It is like an invisible badge to show that Christians are united with Christ and must not be ashamed to stand up for their faith in him. It is normal for Confirmation to be followed straight away

by Holy Communion, although in cases where confirmation has not taken place in a candidate’s parish church they may instead take Communion for the first time in that church on the following Sunday. How can I tell if I am ready for confirmation? People mature in their faith in different ways and at different ages. It is important that you come to Confirmation with firm personal conviction that it is right for you at this point in your life. You should pray about this and ask others in your church to pray for you. You should talk to your vicar and even if you are unsure about being confirmed you may wish to participate in the confirmation course to explore your faith further as you think about it. If you would like to be confirmed please speak to us.

With the fishing season now in full swing our local club Whittlesey AA have been very pleased so far with the sale of this years handbooks. Prices at £17 for adults, just £5 for juniors and senior citizens residing in Whittlesey Parish or £8 out of town, they are great value for money and are available from all the local tackle shops. They have a very full match fixture list which started on the first weekend of the season. Through July they have matches on Queensway, Goosetree Cock Bank and even a match on a commercial water at Float Fish Farm Fishery. Why not pop along and join in the action, I know match organiser Dave White will welcome you with open arms. Junior anglers are not missed out either through the school holidays, the club have Tuesday evening matches at Queensway with the draw at 5.30pm. There are two age groups, under 12year olds and 12 to 16 year olds. I am sure we will be hearing of some fine sport to be had on all of the clubs waters. In the early part of the season anglers will be heading for the likes of the Twenty Foot Drain and Glassmore Bank, looking for tench and bream. Cock Bank is also a good venue early season venue and indeed throughout the year for bream, tench and roach. The club also have a very active web site now with quite

a bit of up to date news, have a look on www.whittleseyaa. org.uk. Like all waters around the country the club have had problems with fish being taken for one reason or another. To try and combat this they have brought in a few rules and indeed have included a free phone number to report fish related problems which is 0800 807060. Further to that they also have a crimestoppers number if anyone sees fish theft, illegal fish stocking or indeed any other environmental crimes such as rubbish or liquid dumping (0800 555 111) It may sound a little heavy handed but we all have to protect our environment and a short phone call could well stop the problems we often now see occurring. 10 Years and still going...Litter Picking Street Priders in 2008

How time flies when we’re having fun! It is nearly 10 years since Fenland District Council had a community spirited project that would help their towns and villages becoming cleaner and greener. Collecting litter, rubbish and fly tipping costs our council over £1million a year, and that is our rate/council tax money being spent? A great deal of this litter, rubbish and fly tipping is made by a minority of people who are too lazy to either use a bin, take it to the recycling centre, or better still take their rubbish home with them. I have on many occasions given the statistics which our fantastic group of volunteers have collected and removed – and I repeat that the sheer volume which has been collected is massive. From a very few people and with some input from local Whittlesey councillors, the Street Pride group have become a well-known group within our town and villages. Laurence Seaton, who now runs Buttercross Auctions, was one of the instigators of setting up the group, and Laurence is still a big supporter and friend of Whittlesea Street Pride. He sponsors the Plough Garden at March Road, Coates. Martin and Sandra Green were part of the first to join and they 24

Discovering Whittlesea | July 2014

too are still very active members after nearly 10 years. I and Treasurer Rob Kent, joined the group after about six months of the group being formed. A large number of the group have been volunteering their time and efforts for many years. David and Margaret Palmer have been working very hard year on year with our gateway projects. So how about helping us a little…. once or twice a month, around an hour or so on each occasion? Help to keep our town one of the tidiest and cleanest in the area. You will meet new like-minded friends and get a ‘bit’ of gentle exercise….

If you would like to help our Town/ Environment – make some new friends and a bit of gentle exercise – everyone is welcome. Roy Gerstner. Chair Whittlesey StreetPride Group t: 01733 208590 e: roy.gerstner@ntlworld.com

| A word from Brian Smithyman How’s Your Faith?

If your life is spiralling out of control because of situations beyond your ability to cope, I sincerely trust this editorial helps you. Quite a while ago I spoke with a Christian businessman who seemed to have both a strong faith in God, and a shrewd business head which helped him develop a very successful business. Showing me around his new acquisition he excitedly shared his vision for the future. On arriving back in the privacy of his board room I asked him what he thought was the key to overcoming the challenges of developing his business while remaining true to Christian principles. He began by telling me about the time he had faced almost total ruin. A number of years before, his apparently successful business was confronted with a challenge of such magnitude that it threatened to take away everything he had worked so hard to achieve. He very quickly began asking God to help in solving what appeared to be an unresolvable situation. God did indeed answer his prayer. However, while the feeling he had was so powerful and clear that he could not ignore it, nothing about it made sense logically. He had overstretched himself financially due to acquiring what appeared to be a sound long term business deal. This had worked well until that company went into receivership. Now, what he believed to be the answer to his prayer, was leading him to take a step of faith and purchase that company. A million questions raced through

his mind: High on that list was how would the bank who were already threatening foreclosure, agree to lend him even more money? Yet, he went on to say, there was one even bigger problem. I suddenly realised that I was struggling believing that this could work. I’d become so busy with my business that I had neglected my faith in God, and now, when I needed it the most I knew it was not strong enough for this challenge. Thankfully my Pastor supported my weakened faith and, together with the company accountant we presented a business plan to the bank. To everyone’s amazement it went through without a hitch. This taught me a lesson I will never forget about the importance of priorities, and cultivating a growing faith. Since then both my business and my faith have grown by leaps and bounds, I now take care of both, equally. How’s your faith today? Why not join us any Sunday at 10.45am and receive your faith lift?

The Sunday Market gets new owners The Sunday Market has long been a weekly destination for local residents, and bargain hunters from afar, but in recent years the once bustling stalls have slowly disappeared. But with the popularity of auctions and vintage wares on the increase, it seems only fitting that our local, and much-loved Sunday Market should get a revamp. Step up Mandy Salter. Mandy, who trades as Millers (UK) Markets Limited, has operated markets both locally and nationally for over 15 years, including the East of England and Norfolk Showground, Wisbech and Long Sutton. The company are a family run business. So what can we expect from the newly opened market? Not only will the popular car boot continue, but Mandy will be introducing an auction every week. Commencing at 10:30am, the auction can be viewed beforehand at 9am, and you can book your own goods into the auction by prior arrangement, or just turn up on the day between 7am and 9am.

The Sunday Market will continue to open all year round, with pitches inside and outside and open to all traders. The addition of inside stalls is welcome news, ensuring that whatever the weather, the market will continue to run. Just some of the pitches taken so far are ABC Quality Butchers and Franks Ice Creams, and Mandy welcomes plant, fruit and vegetable stalls together with new goods and secondhand car boot stalls. Pitches start from just £6 for a car, trailer £8 and a van only £10.

For more information please contact 07913 068770 or join the Sunday Market on Facebook. Further details can be found at www.millersmarkets.co.uk

Garden Jobs for

T

his is often one of the hottest months of the year and a great time to sit out and enjoy your garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly dead-heading and you’ll enjoy a longer display of blooms. Make sure you keep new plants well watered and hoe off weeds which thrive in the sunshine. • Place conservatory plants outside now that it is warm. - Many indoor plants benefit from being placed outside on the patio for the summer. Moving many plants out of the conservatory will save them from baking under glass, and lessen some pest and disease problems, such as red spider mite. Remember to water in the early morning or late evening to prevent leaf scorch. • Water tubs and new plants when dry. - During prolonged dry spells water pots at least once a day. If your pots are drying out too quickly or you’re planning to go away on holiday, group your pots together in a cooler spot - that way, they’ll need watering less often. • Deadhead bedding plants and repeatflowering perennials, to ensure continuous flowering. - Bedding plants, roses and many other perennials benefit from regular deadheading. This will prolong the flowering period, making the garden more attractive, and will also prevent the plants from channelling their energy into seed heads. Simply pinch off the fading flowers, or for tougher branches use secateurs. A lot of plants will also benefit from summer feeding - in roses

for example it can encourage a second flush in autumn. • Clear algae, blanket weeds and debris from ponds and keep them topped up. - A dry summer can mean scarce water resources for wildlife - by making your garden a source of water you can attract plenty of welcome visitors and help control pests. Water features can vary from a pond to a simple fountain. They don’t need to take up much space and look and sound fantastic on a summer’s day. • Give woodwork a lick of paint or preserver while the weather is dry. - Take advantage of dry weather to catch up on painting and preserving jobs - sheds, fences and garden furniture are all regularly in need of a new coat. • Give the lawn a quick-acting summer feed, especially if not given a spring feed. - July is a good month to ensure you keep your lawn healthy. When it’s hot and dry slightly raise the cutting height of your lawnmower as taller grass will cool the roots and help keep the moisture in the soil for longer. Continue to mow regularly, just leave it a little longer.

THE WHITTLESEY INDOOR BOWLS CLUB

For the past three years we have held a six week training course on Saturday mornings. This year we are starting on the 9th. August at 9.00 to introduce new-comers to our most enjoyable game. In the past, these introductory courses have proved very successful and resulted in over 100 people coming along to give it a try. Most have found it to be rewarding and pleasurable as well as bringing a new challenge for something to do over the winter months. We will provide the equipment necessary and all we ask is that you bring along a pair of flat soled footwear. We have five separate rinks each 40 yards long and 6 yards wide and they will be staffed by experienced club members who will ‘show you the way’. By the end of the six weeks, you will know whether this is for you and will then decide whether to become a club member. The main season begins mid-September through to mid-April. During this time, we run 17 internal leagues as well as enjoying weekend

“You can come and have a preview any Tuesday or Thursday mornings from 9.30am, or a Friday evening from 7.00pm” friendly fixtures with other clubs as well as competing in individual club events. Bowling sessions are for 2 hours 15 minutes and begin at 9.30am, 11.45am, 2.00pm, and 4.30pm, as well as an evening session at 7.00pm. In addition to

32

Discovering Whittlesea | July 2014

all these, there are opportunities to book a rink for extra practice etc. Also, there is a social side to the club with events usually on Saturday nights, including Quiz Nights, Beetle Drives, Bingo and our New Year’s Eve dinner and dance. We have a fully licenced bar and a drinks dispenser. With over 260 members, we are probably the largest club in the town and are known as a very friendly bunch! Why not give it a try? If you wish, you can come and have a preview any Tuesday or Thursday mornings from 9.30am, or a Friday evening from 7.00pm. Introduce yourselves and see the rinks in full swing. During the summer, the club office may not always be manned, so, if you would like any further information we have an answering facility on our telephone and will get back to you if you leave your name and number. You can get more information from our advertisement.

Cleaning our Blood

Our blood gets dirty like all things and therefore requires cleaning. The dirt can consist of foreign invaders (bacteria, virus, fungi, etc), toxins (drugs, alcohol), our own mutated or defective cells, used hormones and waste products from cellular metabolism. If this dirt is not removed our blood becomes poisonous leading to disease. Fortunately our bodies have developed a conceptually simple but thorough 4 stage cleaning process. Noah

Noah is the 2014 American epic biblically inspired film directed by Darren Aronofsky, written by Aronofsky and Ari Handel, and based on the well known story of Noah’s Ark. Starring Russell Crowe as Noah, along with Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Anthony Hopkins, and Douglas Booth, the film is far from a straightforward retelling of a biblical story - it’s sharp, ambitious and astonishing. “In the beginning, there was nothing,” begins Noah, before three images fill the screen: a snake gliding through grass, a hand New opening times: reaching for an apple, and a man attacking another. The familiar Sun-Thu 12-8pm & Fri-Sat 12-9pm setting of a flood and ark are visible, but there are surprises, like the six-armed, rock-skinned fallen angels and glowing minerals that tremble with holy power. WE NOW RENT TV SERIES BOX SETS Crowe plays a brilliant part as Noah, who during the day is JULY RELEASES a gatherer in a world of hunters, living with his family in the • UNDER THE SKIN • NEED FOR SPEED wilderness and surrounded by Cain’s descendants who have • THE BOOK THIEF • LEGO MOVIE mutilated Earth. By night Noah dreams of blood and ash, and vast seas washing the world clean. The film itself climaxes in a pitched battle between Cain’s people and those attempting to get to safety on the ark. And from the offset you will be on the edge of your seat. This is a powerful 31/07/2014 movie which tells a biblical story in a new and interesting way. It might not be for the fainthearted but it will leave you with a feeling of awe. 42 Discovering | July 2014

|Finance page by Eamonn Dorling Delivering Simple Financial Advice That really works

Top Financial Concerns According to a recent Gallup poll* of Americans, these are the matters that worry ordinary people the most: 1. Not having enough money in retirement 2. Not being able to pay medical costs in the event of a serious illness or accident 3. Not being able to maintain the standard of living you enjoy 4. Not having enough money to pay off your debt 5. Not being able to pay medical costs for normal healthcare 1. Is a concern for many British families, state benefits are insufficient for most and few individuals are putting enough aside for later life following changes to employer pension schemes and reduced contribution levels. 2. The financial impact from being unable to work due to sickness or accident can be devastating. Protecting the person(s) that generate household income is a fundamental piece of financial planning. A review of a cash flow analysis can illustrate the impact of such an event – this is part of the work I do for my clients. 3. In addition to long term savings and investments, it is important to efficiently plan for planned and unexpected expenditure. A

simple way to increase returns is to reduce exposure to taxation in it’s many forms. 4. Being in control of borrowing is important, your mortgage, credit cards and loans where appropriate need to be part of a financial plan. 5. In America the cost of health care differs from the provision of NHS care – however, we also have private health care, getting the best value for money plan to serve the whole family can be a valuable protection plan. Some planning concerns establishing ‘safety nets’ to protect when things go wrong. Other planning can involve making the best use of savings and investments through management of funds and reducing taxation. If you are concerned about anything financial, get some independent financial advice. The initial meeting is at my expense, then if you need further help we can discuss a way forward. Knowledge is Power (attributed to Francis Bacon) if you know where you are now and where you are going – you become more powerful! Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or any other debt secured on it. The value of the investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back as much as you put in. *http://www.gallup.com/poll/168626/retirement-remains-americans-top-financial-worry.aspx

|Legal Corner by Georgina Hawkes, Dack Pearson Solicitors

What type of power of attorney do I require? or a close friend or member of the family authority to sign the contract or transfer on your behalf while you are away. The document is called a General (or Ordinary) Power of Attorney.

With the holiday season fast approaching, you may be wondering how your financial and legal affairs may be dealt with whilst you are away in the sun. You may be half way through a conveyancing transaction and due to changes in time zones, may not be able to speak to your conveyancer to authorise them to exchange contracts, All that careful planning for a new home falls apart. There is a very simple document which you could leave behind giving your conveyancer

48

Discovering Whittlesea | July 2014

In England and Wales the General Power of Attorney only relates to your property and affairs. You can also limit the time in which the Power of Attorney may be used. In any event, the document will only be valid for one year from the date of execution. The Power of Attorney does not have to be registered, however the person to whom you are granting the authority may not use such authority to make decisions with regard to your personal welfare. If, for any reason, you become incapable of making decisions on your own behalf, the Power of Attorney is immediately void.

Wheels on fire: Circuit of the Fens

A fantastic weekend of sport, music and fun is in prospect at the end of this month when one of Britain’s top cycling races comes to Whittlesey At least 1,000 spectators are expected to pack the town on Sunday, July 27, to witness the Circuit of the Fens. One of the races in the British Cycling Grand Prix series, it is just one rung below the Tour of Britain and will feature up to 140 leading riders. The 135-mile race will start and finish on Market Street, next to the Market Square, and last nearly five hours, including six laps of a fourmile circuit and a sprint finish in the town centre. A supporting race for amateur riders will also be taking place over a distance of 84 miles, starting just after the main event and lasting three and a half hours. Entertainment in the town centre to fill the fourhour gap between the start and finish will include two bands, The Islanders and the Breve Music Band, performing a couple of 40-minute sets each, plus three solo artists - Holly Orridge, Abi Miller, and Shannon Buckton. Full road closures will be in operation all day (9am-7pm), plus rolling closures along the route. The best places to watch the race, apart from the town centre, include Benwick, Eastrea and Coates. There will also be an Ale Trail, featuring 10 local pubs, all selling different ales. The build-up to the big race begins the previous day (Saturday, July 26), with another big cycling event – a “Sportive”, comprising

four races of varying lengths. And that’s not all. A feast of family fun is promised at ManorFest2 at Fenland District Council’s Manor Centre in Station Road (3-10pm). Four bands will be performing - Jessie’s Ghost, Symptom, Sons of Kal-El and Motor City Vipers – as well as local singersongwriter Misty Jones. There will also be BMX, skateboard, graffiti and circus workshops, together with various children’s activities such as bouncy castles and face painting. Tickets for ManorFest2 cost £4 (adult) and £2.50 (child). It’s free for under-2s and free tickets are also being sent to children at the four local primary schools. ‘Lots’ to Celebrate at Golding Young!

Bourne Auction Room to Host Anniversary Sale

O

On September 2nd this year, Golding Young Auctioneers will be celebrating 150 years of being at the forefront of the antiques and auctions market. Golding Young have continually adapted their business to achieve record prices throughout collectors’ markets as times and fashions have changed. The Bourne Auction Rooms will be celebrating this landmark anniversary by hosting a truly special sale alongside the Grantham and Lincoln Auction Rooms. As the newest member of the Golding Young family, the Bourne Auction Rooms are proud of the heritage that the building commands as the former home of the B.R.M. Formula 1 motor racing team. Included, in the sale are some very special items, including a selection of Raymond Mays’s property; his 1963 race diary an example of a truly unique item. Raymond Mays was the legendary owner and racing driver for E.R.A. before setting up B.R.M.

There is a good selection of fine ceramics, spanning the most creative period of William and Walter Moorcroft. A lot worth noting is an early James McIntyre bowl decorated by William Moorcroft; shortly after the production of this item, William formed his own company distributing his wares through such institutions as Liberty & Co and Tiffany.

The Bourne Auction Rooms are always happy to advise on items upon request. Please contact 01778 422686.

Interesting tools have always played a strong part in sales at the Bourne Auction Rooms and the Anniversary Sale will be no exception; two scarce and highly collectable Norris wood planes will attract a lot of attention. Local art will play an integral part in the Anniversary Sale, as a splendid collection of paintings by local artist R.A. Gardner will take pride of place, alongside a fine selection of art from Belgian painters, such as Eugene Verboeckhoven and Charles Brias. Also included is a fantastic piece by the much loved British artist Louis Wain. Whilst Wain is best known for his anthropomorphised depictions of Victorian cats, the piece included in the Anniversary Sale is a less common composition of the canine variety. 58

Hereward CRP Whittlesey Photographic Competition

Are you a budding photographer? Do you like to enter competitions or perhaps you already have a photo that you think resembles life in and round Whittlesey? How about going out to take some photos in the next couple of months? The Hereward Community Rail Partnership (CRP) is launching a photographic competition with winning entries being displayed at Whittlesea Railway Station. We are looking for images that tell people about the town or surrounding area. Anyone aged 5 years or above can enter in one of the following age categories 5 – 11 years, 12 – 18 years, 19 - 40 years, 41 – 64 years and 65 and over. There is also a professional photographer’s category. Cllr Ralph Butcher, the Hereward CRP Chairman and FDC Portfolio Holder for Localism and Transport states: “Whittlesey Railway Station is an important gateway to the town. In partnership with the community we would like to brighten and improve the station whilst also telling people many great things about Whittlesey. Photos provided by local people are a great way for everyone to get involved and share your favourite views of the town or surrounding countryside. We hope that many people will enter a photo.” The competition is open to receive entries from Monday 9 June 2014 and will close at 5pm on Friday 1 August 2014. The winning entries will be announced at the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday 7 September 2014. Further details can be found in the competition information pack. This information pack is available on the Hereward CRP website at http://www.fenland.gov.uk/ article/8800/whittlesea-photo-comp The information is also available at the Whittlesey One Stop Shop and Whittlesey Library. 62

WHITTLESEY WI June’s meeting was a Social Evening when Robert Windle, a members’ husband organised the entertainment ‘Deal or No Deal‘ and it was a fun evening enjoyed by the members and two visitors. The next meeting is on Tuesday 1st of July at St Andrews’ Church Hall at 7 30pm, after the business members are going to visit Whittlesey Museum. New members are always welcome: Ginny 01733 205148. All the staff and people that live here at Aliwal Manor, would like to say a big ‘Thank you’ to everyone that helped us make our annual Fun Day a big success.
