Welcome to our September edition... Can you believe that it’s September already? Not only is it the start of a new school year, but it’s also the month of the wonderful Whittlesey Festival. This year, the organisers have told me that it’s going to be their biggest yet, with amazing rides, activities and stalls. The full list of information can be found on page 6 In addition, this year the “Discovering” team have a stand, so make sure you pop along, support this great community event, and meet

the team behind the magazine (we’ll be on the Market Place).

After my lovely long break in Devon, it’s great to be back in the office – it’s always busy here at Discovering Magazines HQ, and this month is no exception! In this issue we have an interview with Rob Litten, the newly appointed head teacher of Park Lane and New Road Primary School on page 41.

As well as our regular features, we’ve got an events guide bursting full of things to do this month, so there’s no excuse to be bored!

Whittlesey Festival - Don’t Miss it! With just days to go before the Festival on Sunday September 6th, excitement is building as the Market Square and surrounding streets and buildings will be buzzing with fun and laughter. Starting at 10am with a spectacular, colourful and musical parade from the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street, we would love as many people as possible to line the streets to see this wonderful display. The parade will make its way to the Market Square for the official opening by the Mayor of Whittlesey at 10.30am. The air will be filled with music, song and dance, as there is a full programme of activities throughout the day, finishing with a musical finale at 4pm. Children can enjoy free (or subsidised) rides and amusements, puppet shows and face-painting, and there are numerous stalls for you to visit. New this year is the award-winning Haverettes All–Girl Marching Band, all the way from Essex, as well as the Rug-Cutters Lindy Hop dancers, and a Steel Drum band. Take a walk back in time with a display of over one hundred vintage vehicles and a World War Two Dakota aircraft flypast. Visit the Schools’ Art Exhibition, with work from students at local schools on display at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street. This really is a day not to be missed - see right for a summary of some of the things that you can

eptember is generally a cooler, gustier month than August and the days are becoming noticeably shorter. While there’s not as much to do in the ornamental garden at this time of the year, if you have a fruit or vegetable patch, you’ll be busy reaping the rewards of harvest. It’s also time to get out and start planting spring-flowering bulbs for next year. l Divide herbaceous perennials. > Now is a good time to divide any overgrown or tired looking clumps of alpines and herbaceous perennials. This will invigorate them and improve flowering and overall shape for next year. This is also a good time of year to plant new perennials, especially towards the end of September, as the soil is still warm, but moisture levels are increasing. Continue cutting back perennials that are fading and dying down.

> Raise the height of cut as the growth rate of the grass slows down. This will help the lawn to withstand the last of the warm, dry weather, and also keep it resistant to treading as the wet weather arrives.

l Plant spring flowering bulbs. > Common bulbs such as daffodils, tulips, snowdrops, crocus, lilies and iris can all be planted this month and once in flower go a long way to brightening up those dark winter days.

l Take cuttings. > Take cuttings of tender perennials, such as Pelargonium and Osteospermum. These plants often do better grown from new cuttings each year. If you don’t have a greenhouse, then use a light windowsill to grow them on. You can also collect and sow seed from perennials and hardy annuals. l Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damage spoils them. l Clear dead leaves promptly once they start to fall. > Rotting leaves can be a source of disease in the garden. They are, however, useful on the compost heap and can be shredded first with a shredder to help them break down quicker. l Plant trees and shrubs. > If the weather is already autumnal, you can now plant and move shrubs and trees without having to worry excessively about their survival and establishment. Shrubs planted now will get off to a flying start next spring, as they will have had all winter to settle in. l Mow the lawn less frequently.

Change Your Clothes But Not Your Pockets A pocket that can be attached to different garments looks set to change lives around the world â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and not just for the users. The innovative 'Pocketbag' was designed by Peterboroughbased Joe Vine, after a trip overseas. Now, sales of the Pocketbag will help to educate children in India. A spontaneous trip to India followed by a train picnic with two railway children and Joe was inspired to make a difference. India is a long, long way from the urban life of Peterborough, as Joe and John soon discovered. They swapped their home comforts for rucksacks and, twelve hours later, arrived into the chaos of Mumbai. Eventually finding themselves on a sleeper train, Joe and John met a young brother and sister begging for food and small amounts of money. The children were just five and seven years old. The difference between these

childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lives, and the lives of children Joe and John knew in England, was incomparable. Children of five and seven should be loving life, without a care in the world, however it was evident that not all children had this luxury. 10

NEWS ABOUT WHITTLESEY U3A

Joe and John decided that volunteering would enable them to improve the lives of ordinary children in India. Inspired by that train journey, Joe started volunteering with NGOS and care organisations, whilst continuing to travel across India. Whilst travelling and volunteering, Joe was reminded of an idea he had had, before going to India - a detachable pocket which would be attached to clothing, allowing the consumer to change their whole look by the removal of one pocket. “If, for every pocket I sold, I could help a child into education, that would be a start,” he explained. Joe and John decided to call them Pocketbags, and determined to make a real difference to the children of India, they began to create designs which reflected the journey and inspirations they encountered whilst in India. These designs include pockets depicting the Taj Mahal and elephants, and on materials such as denim, which have all been ethically made. For each Pocketbag that is purchased, a less fortunate child in India will receive a school-bag filled with the essential tools they need for the classroom. They aim to reach their first milestone - to provide three hundred bags for children in Goa. You can check the progress of Joe&Johns by visiting their website www.joeandjohns.co.uk .

Retired persons, or folk no longer in full time employment, can sign up for groups that walk, cycle, sing, play board games and bridge, learn languages, do craft work, art, etc. We are adding to this list as more members join and request other activities. We are even hopeful of starting an outings / theatre visits group in the near future, and our own website has just been launched. Members are meeting new friends and saying just how much the U3A is opening up a whole new “world” for them! your Mayor Alex Miscandlon

We are now two months into my term of office, and I am finding out just how hectic my predecessors’ lives were. Last month, I reported on my invitation to Independence Day at Alconbury, which was followed by the more formal changing of commanding officers at both Alconbury and Molesworth. These events were very well attended by invited dignitaries from all our local towns and cities. These encourage return visits to events in our towns and cities. The Americans have a good relationship with Whittlesey, and thanks go to ex-Councillor Derek Stebbings, and his wife Margaret, for nurturing and maintaining this contact. Apart from the aforementioned events, I have attended a number of local events, one of the highlights being the charity football match held in aid of the young lady Effie, who suffers from Batten’s disease. Both myself and my deputy Mayor, Cllr. Ralph Butcher, were delighted to offer our support, along with our local MP Steve Barclay and his family. I have to report that I lost out to the Posh white rabbit in a speed kick off. I only recorded 36mph, while he recorded high in to the 40s, but then I am a lot older than he is! An excellent game followed, and a good time was had by all. They also managed to raise a lot of money. After the match, my wife and I visited the music event in the market place. It was very good; however what wasn’t so good was the weather,

as it poured most of the time we were there. This was a great shame as it kept people away from a great event. We can only hope the sun shines for the Whittlesey Festival this month. Some of the other events attended include local care homes, The Gables in Coates and Cedar Court in Whittlesey, where I met some delightful people. As summer progresses, we at the Council, are looking forward to holding events for both Whittlesey and the surrounding villages. I will be happy to talk to anyone on any issues that they may have. The A605, at what is known as the Larkfleet roundabout, is at present causing delays. I can only ask you to be patient with the developer while he sorts these problems out. As a regular user of the route, I am aware of the problems. Any other problems you have, I will attempt to help you. During July, members and husbands enjoyed a trip to Oxborough Hall in Norfolk. It’s a 15th century, moated manor house, with beautiful gardens and woodland walks. At August’s meeting, Jonathon Revett gave a fascinating talk with slides about fungi. Members were also reminded about Whittlesey Festival in September, when once again there will be a stall selling refreshments. Also in October, members 16

Sixteen Forty-Three

In this new series, we follow the development of Whittlesey from The Stone Age to present day, through the eyes of ordinary families

ne hundred years passed, and the great open fens of Whittlesey have become a target for the rich landowners to drain and convert to year round arable and pasture. The adventurers, including men like the Earl of Bedford, and locals George Glapthorne and Francis Underwood, start to drain parts of the Fen. As they can’t persuade the locals to help, they hire French Huguenots. This provokes wide scale protest. Robert looked over his shoulder at the men following his cousin Jeffrey down the drove, leading to the hated drainage works. They were in fine form; looking for a morning of mischief, carrying scythes, pitchforks and the like. Close on a hundred had answered the ringing of the church bell, but sensibly the boys had been sent home, and now the men were in high spirits. Jeffrey, catching his cousin glancing backwards, pointed ahead of them. “There it is boys!” he shouted, “that’s where the rogues are lurking!” With that, they started running and whooping towards the groups of workmen ahead. They were digging a drain parallel to others running through Blackbush. Some of the fields were already under crops, and in the corner of one, stood a new house, clay built and thatched with a half built barn. The workmen scattered; by contrast the two figures emerging from the house strode towards the men. Jeffery halted at a cross dyke, separating the rioters into groups each under a “Sergeant” . These were older and steadier men, chosen to keep the hotheads in check. Some were sent to tear down fences and scare off the animals; others to fill the drains, pulling down the sluices; yet more dispersed to trample down the crops. By the time the two men had crossed over the field and been roundly abused by all and sundry, Jeffery had but a few men left around him. George Glapthorne, who farmed the St. Andrews Manor lands, was a well-known Improver, and Peter Brettagne was his chief tenant in Blackbush Fen. “Master Boyce,” George shouted above the noise of hooting and hollering, “this is foolishness! What do you mean to accomplish? These men are doing no harm!” “You are stealing the commons from underneath us. We poor men depend on the fens for our food, fodder and grazing for our livestock, fuel for our fires and thatch for our roofs. How can you tell us you are doing no harm!” Smoke started to billow from the half-built barn. “Non, non!” shrieked the Frenchman, running back across the field. This wasn’t what had been planned and Robert ran after him. Brettagne’s family rushed screaming out of the door, as Robert discovered one of the rioters attempting to set the house itself on fire. “Hold you fool,” Robert hissed, dragging him away and stamping out the smouldering turf. “Do you want the

army brought down on us? “ Meanwhile Jeffrey remonstrated with Glapthorne. “Anymore of your draining and house building, and we’ll burn you off. You have no right to cut up these levels!” “Oh but we do…..” “Your committees are full of rogues, nothing less”, rejoindered Jeffery. “I will have no option but to send to Wisbech for troops! Do you really want this?” Robert took the shaken Glapthorne by the arm and pulled him to one side. “For pities sake, get on your horse and get out of here. There’ll be blood if you keep arguing with them. This has gone too far,” he whispered. “You’re a sight more sensible than these others,” Glapthorne said. “The consequences they’ll face will only hurt their cause.” He mounted and rode off, sparing a nod to Robert. “What was that all about?” Jeffery demanded. “Saving you from a hanging cousin. It’s one thing to tumble some fences and scare livestock, but it’s a whole other matter to burn down houses, and strike a justice if not kill him.” Jeffery laughed. “Put the wind up him though anyway!” “And the price you are going to pay, is that worth a few moments of satisfaction when they drag you off to the courts?” “Having the right of it is true cousin, but history is full of dead men who had the right of it. Being right won’t change the world, unless you can convince them who have the land, the money and the army to back them. And you won’t.” “What do you suggest then, cousin?” Jeffery asked. “Making the best of what we have of course. This drainage any fenman can see that it’s not going to hold Old Man Flood back for long. The water’s got to go somewhere, and unless they can make it run uphill, or stop the highland’s water from flowing downhill, he’ll do a far better job than you.” “I suppose you’re right,” Jeffery admitted, grudgingly and called his men back. “Come on, let’s get some drink down us before the army comes!”

Street Pride work with Whittlesey In Bloom It was with great pleasure that Whittlesey Street Pride joined Whittlesey in Bloom for the annual “Anglia in Bloom” competition. No less than four of our gateway projects were included in the inspection that took place on Thursday July 16th. A lot of hard work had been carried out on the previous three days. There were verges to be trimmed, boats and benches to be cleaned, and a touch of paint here and there. By the Thursday, everything was immaculate. Well done the maintenance team! | Policing your area by Tracey Liano Over the last month, whilst dealing with our ‘Summer engagements’, we have still been kept busy with issues in, and around, Whittlesey. The local fetes at the end of term for most of the schools have been a nice end to the school year, not only for the students, but also for us as officers. We can sometimes get ‘bogged down’ by the “down” side of our job, dealing with sad and emotional issues, so when we are asked to do an event such as a school fete, it really is a pleasant and welcome change, and we hope that all those who attend, enjoy the event as much as we do! Since the increase in use of the media, Facebook, Twitter and other well-known resources found on the internet, a type of crime has evolved called ‘cyberbullying’, which can range from any of the features below: · Sending nasty messages to a person’s email account, Facebook account, or mobile phone. · Spreading rumours online or via a text message. · Posting hurtful and vicious online messages. · Pretending to be another person online to send

horrible messages. · Taking unflattering pictures of a person and sending, or posting them, online. · Targeting certain people racially, or because of their sexuality or their disability. Just over three weeks ago, we were informed of a situation involving cyberbullying, where images and inappropriate wording of a member of the public were being posted. The Communications Act 2003 makes sending a malicious communication using social media an offence. Our enquiries are still ongoing, but we hope to be moving closer to getting a positive outcome. We also had a stabbing in July, and this resulted in extensive house to house, and other associated, enquiries. The Hermitage Fund Raising Day

The Hermitage Residential Care Home, Whittlesey, big fundraising fete and car boot sale, took place this year on Saturday July 18th - and what an unforgettable day it was! We managed to raise a staggering £2,780 for the residents’ ‘Comfort Fund’. A big thank you to everyone who donated and took part, for making it another huge success.

Whittlesey in Bloom As mentioned in the July edition, judging took place on Thursday July 16th. The ‘In Bloom’ volunteers, very ably assisted by the Street Pride volunteers, worked tirelessly to ensure the town looked its best on the day. To you all, I give my sincere thanks. Before I proceed any further, I must give an apology; I did not write an article for the August edition, as I was involved with family holidays, but I do need to apologise to anyone that took offence with the July article that mentioned grot spots that we were not successful in getting tidied. It was not aimed at anyone in particular. During the week of the judging, we were successful in getting a new planter sited on the green area at the entrance to Manor View and Portland Place. This planter has been sponsored by RWS Ltd, and we are very grateful for this donation. It looked wonderful on judging day, and we hope it will give more businesses encouragement to sponsor either a planter, or give a donation towards our works. Unfortunately, on the evening of July 28th, that planter was completely vandalised - and every plant was removed. The planter has since been replanted, and we are hoping that it is not destroyed again. On the same evening, the beds at the entrance to the Manor were also vandalised. The Manor beds had been victim to some vandalism prior to that date, and we had endeavoured to replace the plants. However, we will not continue to do so. This will let residents and visitors see what is happening in our town. I can only say that whoever is responsible should be totally ashamed; funding for ‘In Bloom’ is given by the residents and businesses of 24

Whittlesey. It is your money that is being wasted. Do you want us to continue? We know how much the flower beds mean to so many people, because they tell us so when we are working on them, and we are very appreciative of the lovely remarks which are made to the ‘In Bloom’ team. It is a shame that the hard work is being spoilt by a few who have neither interest in the flowers and plants, nor in enhancing the amenities of the town. The result of this year’s work will be known on Thursday September 17th, just in time to let you know in the October edition. The presentations this year are being carried out in Ware, Hertfordshire, and several of the ‘In Bloom’ team will be making their way down there for the occasion. I cannot end without paying tribute to the Street Priders who, as mentioned earlier, assisted us to ensure the town looked its best on judging day. We are hoping to work together more throughout the year to ensure the town looks its best always, and not just on judging day. We also work with the District and Town Councils, and other organisations and businesses, in trying to enhance our town. Once again, on behalf of the dedicated Whittlesey in Bloom team of volunteers, thanks for your support.

| A word from Brian Smithyman YOU CAN FIND THE COURAGE TO CHANGE Whilst researching a topic I was sharing with our church family, I came across the inspiring account of Telemachus, a tiny, fourth-century Christian, who lived in a remote village, and was known for his prayerful lifestyle. One day, he felt certain in his heart that for some reason, God wanted him to go to Rome. The following day, he set out on foot and, weeks later, he finally arrived in Rome at the time of a great festival. Following the crowd, he ultimately ended up in the Colosseum where gladiators were saluting the Emperor before fighting each other to the death, in order to entertain the gathered crowd. As the games began, he pushed through the crowd, climbed over the wall and dropped to the floor of the arena. When the crowd saw this tiny figure standing in front of the gladiators, saying, “In the name of Christ, stop!”, they thought it was part of the show and began laughing. When they realised it wasn’t, their laughter turned to anger. Suddenly, a gladiator plunged a sword into his body, and before dying, his final challenging shout was, “In the name of Christ, stop!”. As the gladiators stood motionless, staring at the tiny figure lying crumpled on the arena floor, an eerie hush fell over the Colosseum. In the upper rows, a man stood up and quietly made his way to the exit. Quickly, others began to follow in deathly silence, until the Colosseum was empty. The year was 391BC. This was the last battle

to the death between gladiators in the Rome Colosseum. Never again did men kill each other for the entertainment of the crowd. The courage of one tiny man had finally ended this gruesome activity. In this increasingly mixed-up world, I regularly meet many who face enormous challenges of abuse, addiction, loneliness, illness and poverty, to name but a few. Sometimes, like Telemachus, we feel incapable of ever changing things. But, through God’s help, everyone can find the courage and strength to not only survive, but overcome whatever situations they may be facing today. High on the list of things that inspire me, is a painting of our logo hanging in the church foyer, surrounded by the words, ‘Within the walls of this house let no one go unloved’. Then there is the motto of the ministers’ fellowship I belong to, ‘Why walk alone when we can walk together?’ Things can change, and you can change them; let us help you find the courage to do it.

We hope that you have had, or are still having, a good summer. It is September, so we begin to look towards autumn. Perhaps the summer brought the opportunity for some quiet time, either at home or away. If someone comes up with, or knows a way to slow down time, sharing this knowledge would be appreciated!!! It may be an idle dream to slow down time, but we do need to find space for those close to us, ourselves and our relationship with God. Even short periods of what is called ‘quality time’, can have far-reaching benefits. We have to be realistic though, and the pace of our lives will always intrude. Try not to lose the opportunities when they present themselves. Take the time to read that book, to listen to that piece of music, to go for a walk, to sit in the garden, to have that conversation.

With the summer holidays all but over, anglers will soon be turning their attention to the top quality predator fishing we have close to Whittlesey. But first, while we still have reasonable weather, you just have to try a couple of our local fisheries. Kingsland has been in fine form throughout the summer months, and it’s expected to get even better before winter arrives. Both the carp lakes have seen huge pleasure and match weights, anglers catching off the top with bread, with fish well into double figures recorded. You could also try the Silver Fish Pool; there has been a change in stocking policy on this one now, and it has just about everything in it, from roach, bream and rudd to carp so, whatever bait or method you prefer, your float is bound to go

Steve Smith at Kingsland under. Northey Park is another local water that has been in top form. Just off the North Bank at the Whittlesey end, the area is so peaceful. Also the day-ticket lakes are well worth a visit. Whittlesey Angling Association continues to run club matches on local waters. Coming up through September will be fixtures on the likes of Decoy Lakes, Float Fish Farm and Kingsland. Then they will be switching to Fenland drains for a very full list of matches, right up until the end of the season in March. It’s not too late to get yourself a club book; all the local tackle shops will have them and for just £17 for adults, they are very good value for money.

Members dressed to impress in a 1915 style, to celebrate the Centenary of the W.I., and the stars of the show were Daisy from the Donkey Sanctuary and the vintage Morris. Party food was followed by an auction of donated produce, from chillies to chutney. It was a wonderful

Eastern Counties Tai Chi Academy The Eastern Counties Tai Chi Academy recently held their second International Tai Chi Workshop at the new Eastrea Village Centre. Around sixty instructors and members, from as far afield as Canada and Romania, took part in the two-day event. The Moy Lin Shin, Tai Chi Senior Instructors, Doug and Susan Overholt

Whittlesey Youth Club Meeting

A public meeting was held on Tuesday July 7th to discuss the closure of the open access youth clubs, previously delivered and managed by the Whittlesey Locality Team. The clubs stopped running in June 2015, due to budget savings within the Local Authority. The meeting was an opportunity for the local community to meet to discuss the local needs of young people, and whether the development of a community group was required to look into evolving future provision for young people. The meeting was

advertised widely throughout the Whittlesey community. Unfortunately, the meeting was poorly attended. Attendees consisted of local Councillors, local officers from Cambridgeshire County Council, the Rotary Club and a local business. The outcome of the meeting was agreement that there was no real interest, or flavour to develop any new provision, and this was demonstrated by the low number of attendees at the meeting. However, if you do feel that you would like to be involved in developing community services to support young people, please contact Whittlesey Town Council on 01733 351296. A word from the RBL On Sunday July 26th, the Royal British Legion Riders branch came to Whittlesey cemetery on their motorbikes to carry out the commemoration service for Pte. John William Hutchcraft, who died in the First World War, one hundred years ago. Although the weather was rather inclement, many people attended. Thanks to all those, both civilian and uniformed, together with standard bearers and Reverends Nigel Whitehouse and Brian Smithyman, who all played a part in a successful ceremony. A service to commemorate the 70th anniversary of VJ day was held at Whittlesey memorial on Saturday August 15th, and again was well attended. The Whittlesey branch standard was in attendance, and a wreath was laid in remembrance during the ceremony, conducted by Roger Brown. The Whittlesey Festival now draws near, and we shall again be having our teddy tombola stall there to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal. Currently, our total figure raised for the Poppy Appeal this year stands at over £10,200. Let’s hope for another fine day, so do come along and see us on the poppy stall and have a go. Our annual Band Concert is on October 30th this year at the Ivy Leaf Club, and the City of 34

Peterborough Concert Band will be there to entertain us. Tickets at £5.00 each are available now from myself, or Judy Darby, and you can contact us on our telephone numbers listed below. This is a really entertaining evening and not to be missed. Plans are well on their way now for remembrance fortnight, with wreaths and poppies now being ordered. If anyone requires a wreath, or any information regarding the distribution of poppies, please let me know. Remembrancetide this year is from Saturday October 24th until Saturday November 7th, with remembrance Sunday and the parades on Sunday November 8th. Caramel Banana Shortbread

I love making these with my two boys. We have adapted it over the years to include a caramel topping, which is absolutely delicious. 2. Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Cream the butter Ingredients: • 2 x 397g tins condensed milk with the sugar until light and fluffy, sift the plain and cornflour into the mixture, and combine to form a • 250g butter dough. My grandfather - both my parents were barely sixteen when I was born, and so I lived with my grandparents until my parents were old enough to get a home of their own. During that time, I developed an unusually close bond with my grandfather, who had a brilliant sense of humour and a love of practical jokes. His greatest gift to me was a pocket atlas. Country by country, he would spend hours telling me about his many escapades as a young soldier – he led me to believe that life is one big adventure, to enjoy life and give it your best shot. He inspired so many of my own adventures. My first being when I was eighteen; I travelled to the States on my own, took a 5,000 mile road trip from Milwaukee to Belize, with barely 300 dollars, a couple of bus tickets and a map. 3) WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY?

1) WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD? I was born in Great Yarmouth, and have many happy memories of such a fun seaside town - especially eating chips on the market, from one of the many traditional chip stalls, after a good long swim in the sea. Having said that, I spent much of my childhood fishing and messing about in boats on the Norfolk Broads. Like many children in the 1980s, I had a level of freedom that is unimaginable today. I spent many a summer night fishing for Pike, often until sunrise, with a couple of good friends and little more than a carrier bag full of sandwiches and a bottle of squash.

Homer and Marge Simpson, if only because I could relax and enjoy my food without having to think too much. On a more serious note, I am a great fan of the “Simpsons”, and have been for years, if only because they remind me of how much fun life can be if you are prepared to drop your guard and be your true self. 4) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS? Fun, optimistic, hardworking, adventurous, kind. 5) IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT WHITTLESEY, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? Tricky question as Whittlesey is so new to me. I do think Whittlesey should be twinned with all the other Whittleseys in the world. Last time I checked, there is a Whittlesey in the United States, South Africa and Australia - it’s amazing to think there may have been an adventurer or two from Whittlesey, who travelled thousands of miles and may have been inspired to name their new found home from whence they came. 6) WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU?

Bacteria: Our friend and foe A strange relationship exists between us and bacteria. On one hand we are constantly trying to kill them and on the other we can not survive without them. No matter how much we clean ourselves, we will always have bacteria living on and inside of us. We have a symbiotic relationship with them. This means that we provide a suitable environment for them to live and in return they perform jobs for us. These jobs we can not do ourselves. Thus we can not live without them and they can not live without us. Yet we are competing all the time for space. Our immune systems (and various other body mechanisms) are in place to keep the bacteria population under control. Failure to do this and the bacteria will run riot, multiple and take over our bodies. This is why, for example, we have the urge/desire to wash. Our brains are in tune with our own scent and can identify when we smell and need cleansing. A large proportion of our scent, as you are gathering, is due to the size of the bacteria colony living on our skin. However, being too clean can also have its problems. We see this amongst those who are classed as obsessive compulsive disorders when they may wash 4-5times a day, brush their teeth multiple times, etc. The consequences is that various bacterial colonies are destroyed and so the jobs they perform go undone. Our bodies then suffer because we can not do them. Bacteria also keeps our immune system strong. The greater the exposure to bacteria the stronger our immune systems. All systems in our bodies work on a simple principle : the greater the exposure to a stimulus the better we become at adapting to it. Think of throwing a ball, playing a instrument, performing your job, hearing sounds, talking, anything in fact. The greater we do it the better we get. The same applies to our immune system. 100years ago we were exposed to thousands of bacteria daily, 1000yrs ago even more and 100000 yrs ago substantially more as our habits were more rural and technologically free. Our environments today are relatively sterile in comparison. Our exposure to bacteria is relatively low so our immune system gets lazy. Our weakening immune system is one of the many reasons why we are suffering from more coughs, colds and flus? Another of those reasons, is our reliance on medicine. Not only is our exposure to bacteria deceasing (due to the sterile environment) but when are immune systems are engaged (i.e. we have a cough, cold or flu) we provide extra help when it is not needed. Would you want somebody reading the paper out loud to you when you are perfectly capable of reading it yourself? Now we are not implying that we should all live dirty, wash once a week and eliminate medications. Rather we should strike a balance, excessive cleanliness weakens our bodies as does excessive dirtiness. Giving our immune system a chance to fight the bacteria / virus means it grows stronger and thus reduces the frequency of future illness. Should our bodies struggle (as a rough guide no change or worsening after 5-7days) then consider sending in the second wave; medicine. We hope this has been thought provoking and wish you all well.

WHEN YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE BUT WEIGHT!

Can there be anything worse than a young girl in her twenties with everything ahead of her - hiding herself away because she hated the way she looked? Jaimee Aliker from Whittlesey, aged twenty-eight, has lost a tremendous six stone, taking her dress size down from twenty-two to a svelte size ten, in just over a year. Having tried many diets before, Jaimee’s lowest point came just after the birth of her first child. Jaimee was emotional as she explained, “I had many low points as I struggled through my late teens and early twenties – pretending that being overweight wasn’t a problem, but privately hating myself for the way I looked. After my daughter was born, my weight rocketed up to a size twenty-six. I knew that I had to do something about it; not just for me this time, but for my daughter. “So I set out to lose weight, but I had no help, no support, and no-one to tell me that what I was doing could cause me health problems in the future. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what happened. After two years of struggling with an unmanageable diet, I was rushed to hospital with liver failure. “Skipping forward a year, I had my gall bladder removed. No-one explained that there would be weight gain, so the weight piled back on again. I got so desperate, I starved myself in the hope that I wouldn’t keep putting weight on – but I did. Eventually I went to see my doctor; at this point I was desperate, broken and struggling to cope as my weight spiralled out of control.” After breaking her heart to the doctor, she was left feeling disappointed at the lack of support. With nowhere else to turn, a friend suggested Slimming World. Jaimee went along to the local group. “I’m sure I was the biggest person there,” she said, “but nobody made me feel big; in fact, they were all so welcoming that for the first time in a long time, I forgot about my size. I actually felt positive about the future. I was amazed that I could still eat all my favourite meals, I just had to tweak a few things to make it work. Even my fussy family love the new Slimming World menus.” Now Jaimee is getting closer to target, she feels great. “Even though I’m not at my target 46

Grass Seeds This time of year, it’s very common to see grass seed injuries, in our practice. These seeds are shaped like darts and stick to an animal’s fur. They are designed to only go in one direction, which means they can burrow in to the pets’ skin. They can be found in cats, although it’s much more common in dogs, and can be found anywhere on your pet. Between the toes, on their legs around the the feet, and in the ears and eyes are the most common places.

Grass seeds

Ears: You may notice your dog shaking their head, scratching their ears, rubbing their ears on the floor, or you may even notice a head tilt. Grass seeds in the ears can be very painful, and to ensure a better outcome, should be dealt with promptly. These can sometimes be removed by a veterinary surgeon, but because it is so painful, a sedation and pain relief is often necessary. Seek veterinary attention as soon as possible; if left, the grass seed could even pierce the eardrum of your pet. Eyes: You may notice your dog rubbing the eye with a paw, or the eye being closed with weeping and redness.The grass seed can cause an ulcer on the surface of the eye, which will separately need treatment. Without medication, an ulcer is painful and will not heal by itself, and your pet could lose the sight of the eye. Seek veterinary attention as soon as possible. Nose: You may notice sneezing, discharge or 50

even bleeding from the nostrils. A grass seed can be inhaled and can go into the lungs. This can lead to many complications, including infection or death. Seek veterinary attention as soon as possible. Skin/Paws: Your dog may be licking between their toes or you might notice some swelling or chewing of their legs. You may notice a red blister, or red pimple between the toes. The seeds can enter at the foot and move along the leg, and could even come out higher up the limb, or even further afield. Seek veterinary attention as soon as possible. If a grass seed is left, it can travel through the body tissues and is often not easy to find. In extreme cases, an MRI scan may be necessary to locate and then remove it. There are lots of different types of grass seed out there, that could be found on your pets. But there are a few things which you can do to help prevent grass seed problems. After a walk, you can check your pet by looking between toes, under front legs, and around the ears, especially dogs with longer ears (Spaniels, Lhasa-Apso, Shih-Tzu, Golden Retrievers), but they can affect any breed of dog. You should, if possible, groom and go over your pet to check for grass seeds. You can also keep long hair on the feet and ears short, to prevent the seed sticking to the hair.

NRB frozen until 2020/21 at £325,000 per person (X 2 = £650,000) now in 7th year will be 11 years. There is the introduction of an additional property allowance. This will be worth £100,000 in 2017-18, £125,000 in 2018-19, £150,000 in 2019-20, and £175,000 in 2020-21. This will allow individuals to pass on assets worth up to £500,000, including a family home, without paying any IHT at all. For married couples and civil partners, the total is £1m. This additional allowance will be gradually withdrawn for estates worth more than £2m. If you need to know the impact on Long Term Care and estate planning investments, the best idea is to take advice from an Independent Financial Adviser.

Dividend Income:

The headline was ‘No tax on first £5,000 of dividend income.’ Hardly any basic rate tax payers used to pay tax on dividends anyway, but after the first £5,000, tax will be levied at 7.5% - so that is an increase. Higher rate tax payers will pay 32.5% after the first £5,000, and additional rate tax payers 38.1%. These rates do not apply to ISA and pension funds – if you are drawing significant amounts of dividend or any other income outside of ISA or pension – this is an opportunity to review your arrangements.

Pensions:

Lifetime allowance has reduced from £1.8m in 2010 to £1m now. Ongoing the limit will be linked to CPI. Annual Allowance has also been reduced; for many the maximum per year is limited to £40,000, but there are several situations where this may be reduced to £10,000. Again qualified advice could provide valuable tax advantages. Musical talent live on the Buttercross

On Sunday August 16th, Whittlesey Town Council sponsored a free music festival in the newly liberated community area of the town, the Buttercross, for the enjoyment of all in Whittlesey who wished to attend. The weather was excellent, and crowds of several hundred people turned out to enjoy a superb performance by the band, â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Children of the Revolutionâ&#x20AC;?, supported by solo female vocalist Shannon Buckton. The afternoon's entertainement, combined with that of a similar event in July, are designed to make use of the town square following the relocataion of the central bus station to Grosvenor Road earlier in the year, and is to be followed by the annual Whittlesey Festival on Sunday September 6th.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is the latest superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team, the Avengers. Produced by Marvel Studios, it is the sequel to the 2012’s The Avengers, and the eleventh instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Written by Joss Whedon and featuring returning star Robert Downey Jr., alongside stars such as Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johnanson, the Avengers must work together to defeat Ultron, a mechanical artificial intelligence bent on human extinction.

So what can we expect from this latest superhero film? Quite a lot, actually. Fans of the characters will be delighted to see them back in action, battling their own insecurities, relationships, and powers, alongside a force threatening to end humanity. The theme of artificial intelligence leaves you questioning what lies ahead with technology, whilst the special affects once again do not fail to impress. Which boundary do I own?

This is probably the most asked question from a purchaser.

There is a common belief that if the post and rails are on your side of a boundary, then that boundary is yours to maintain. Alternatively, that the boundary on the right hand side of the property when looking straight at the property from the road, belongs to your property. Unfortunately, there is no legal foundation in these statements. It is your title deeds which should state which boundary is your responsibility to maintain, quite often distinguished by an inward â&#x20AC;&#x153;Tâ&#x20AC;? mark. However, it is not unusual, especially with older properties, that there is nothing on the deeds or at the land registry to indicate which boundary is yours to maintain. In this instance, it is best to ask either the seller or the adjoining owners

which boundaries they consider to be their and your responsibility. You ideally do not want to get into a boundary dispute with your new neighbours. For knowledgeable legal help on all aspects of property transactions please feel free to contact us on the numbers below.
