Welcome to our October edition... I am writing my introduction, fresh from attending the Whittlesey Festival, on September 6th. And what a festival it was! We had sunshine, we had the community out in force, and we had such fun! I’d like to express my sincere congratulations to the organisers, who delivered, as far as I am concerned, an outstanding day for all. Long may events like these continue, because they provide some

Welcome to our October issue of “Discovering Whittlesea” After the success of the Whittlesey Festival, we’ve been hard at work putting together another packed issue full of local news and information, including an update on the “Whittlesey In Bloom” competition on page ??. We also have another great

much needed entertainment and community spirit. For our full report, and a gallery of pictures from the day, please turn to page 32. This edition also has the results of the “In Bloom” competition, which we were fortunate to receive just before going to press. You can find that out on page 55. Stay warm... as the weather starts to turn chilly, and we’ll see you next month! Please note - the editorial deadline for the November issue will be October 12th.

If you would like to nominate somebody for our “Hot Seat” interview, please do get in touch with us, we’d love to hear from you. Finally, we’d like to wish you a lovely October.

| Community news Patients Participation Group (PPG) FLU CLINICS 2015 This year’s flu clinics will be held on Saturday 17th and 24th of October. Doors will be open to patients from 9am until 11am. Access into the flu clinic will be via the fire exit double door at the car park end of the building. Members of the PPG will be in attendance to direct and assist. You will exit the building via the normal ‘IN’ door, adjacent to the Boots pharmacy. At the same time, there will be an event in the waiting room with a cake stall, run by our PPG to raise funds towards the purchase of equipment required by the surgery, for the benefit of all patients. Members of the PPG will also be handing out our annual patient questionnaire. Other organisations will also be in attendance; including Care Network, Cambs CC and the Smoking Cessation Team. PATIENT TRANSPORT CONSULTATION Consultation on a future model for NONEMERGENCY PATIENT TRANSPORT SERVICES for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) area patients. There is a twelve week consultation - August 27th to November 19th 2015 - to gather feedback on how Cambs and Peterborough CCG provide good quality Non-Emergency Transport Services to the people living in this area. Public meetings have been arranged throughout the area, however currently there is not a meeting arranged in Whittlesey. The PPG has contacted the CCG and requested that a meeting be arranged for Whittlesey, and as soon as we have a date, we will advertise it. Copies of the consultation document are available at the surgery and the Boots pharmacy. It is essential that the public of Whittlesey have their say on this very important consultation. NEW SURGERY OPENING TIMES As a result of patient feedback, with effect from September 1st 2015, the surgery opening hours have changed. We now have the surgery doors and the telephone appointment lines open from 8am every weekday morning. In addition, we are now open EVERY MONDAY evening for an extended session; previously this had been every other week. These Monday evening appointments, from 6.30pm until 9pm, are all available to be booked in advance, and are available to book online through the practice website too. In addition to response from patients, we have undergone an overhaul of the doctors’ appointments 6

D I S C O V E R I N G

schedules. This has resulted in a wider range of appointment times available throughout the day, with a slightly higher percentage now available for booking in advance, and more available to be booked online. We now have doctors starting slightly earlier in the mornings and in the afternoons, and finishing slightly later in the afternoons, and of course every Monday evening is now a LATE evening session. FRIENDS AND FAMILY TEST The surgery is taking part in the NHS wide patient survey, called “Friends and Family Test”. Patients who visit a health professional at the surgery, have the opportunity to tell us if, after their appointment, they are likely or not to recommend our service to their friends and families. You can complete this survey at the surgery; there are slips in the waiting room, you can also undertake the survey via our website. If you are set up with text reminders, you will also get a friends and family text following an appointment. We are really grateful for all feedback we get from you all, it really helps us to shape our future services. To register for the many online services now available at the practice, please complete an online registration form (available both in the surgery and from the website), at www.queenstreetsurgery.co.uk We do have a good Patient Participation Group and new members are welcomed; if you are interested please come along. Information about PPGs can be found on the website. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday November 2nd at 7pm at the Surgery.

lthough we had some warmer days over September, the autumn chill is setting in and it’s feeling much colder. It’s a beautiful time of year though, and on nice days the changing colour of the trees looks fantastic against clear blue skies. l Clear up fallen autumn leaves regularly. > Sometimes it may seem pointless raking up fallen leaves when the wind blows even more onto the lawn. If they are left they will block out light and air penetration to the grass and the lawn will take longer to recover in the spring. l Cut back perennials that have died down. > Lift and divide over crowded herbaceous plants. Now is also a good time to plant new herbaceous perennials as the soil is still warm but moister than it was during the summer. l Take out the last of the summer bedding. > Any remaining summer bedding will be looking very tired and now and is best cleared and replaced for a

fresher display. Pansy and viola will give a splash of instant colour. Wallflowers, myositis, primula – these can all be planted now in preparation for spring. l Lift pots off the ground. > Raise patio containers on to bricks or purpose made pot feet to avoid them sitting in water during the winter. l Plant spring bulbs. > Bulbs for spring should be planted now and once planted can be left in place to flower every year as they would in the wild. l Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges. > This month is the last chance to scarify, aerate and top dress lawns. Afterwards apply an autumn feed. Deciduous hedges should be trimmed to keep them looking tidy over the winter.

The U3A Movement - What IS the U3A? Don’t be put off by the term “university”! The original Latin word “universitas” refers in general to “a number of persons associated into one body, a society, company, community, club, corporation, etc.” There the resemblance to Oxford or Cambridge ends!! U3A stands for the University of the Third Age, which is a self-help organisation for people no longer in full-time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment. It consists of local U3As all over the UK, which are charities in their own right and are run entirely by volunteers. Local U3As are learning cooperatives which draw upon the knowledge, experience and skills of their own members to organise and provide “interest groups” in accordance with the wishes of the membership. The teachers learn and the learners teach. Between them, U3As offer the chance to study over 300 different subjects in such fields as art, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography, singing, cycling and walking. A typical U3A has about 250 members, but could be as small as 12 and as large as 2000. Whittlesey has around 130 presently. The U3A approach to learning is – learning for pleasure. There is no accreditation or validation and there are no assessments or qualifications to be gained. (Phew!!)

I spoke last month of the possibility of a Theatre & Day Trips group being formed. Well, persons willing to organise this have come forward and progress is being made. Members may soon be looking forward to coach trips to West End shows and the like, as well as places of interest. A “Short Walks” group has also started to complement the main Walking Group, also a Sunday Lunch Club which meets at different eating establishments monthly. A Film Group is due to start soon, where members will be visiting a local cinema together and then discussing the movie over a coffee afterwards. Other groups are being considered. Our next Open meeting is on Thursday October 15th, at 2pm, where our guest speaker is Pat Wallace Pope, whose subject is “Tartan & the History of Kilt Making.” U3A is the only national education organisation in the UK run entirely by its own members. We are here for you. Why not give us a try? Visit our website – just Google “whittlesey u3a”, then bookmark it. You can print a Membership Application from our site or call Trish Glazier on 01733 204048. Tony Wright, Publicity Officer.

| A word from

your Mayor Alex Miscandlon

Hi everybody. During the month of August, civic functions slow down due to holidays. Due to this year being the seventieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War, I was invited to a number of services of remembrance. I had the privilege of representing Whittlesey at the VJ Service in Wisbech. This service was very well attended by a large number of veterans from the Far East campaign. Many were in their nineties and had interesting stories to tell, and I would hope that someone takes the opportunity to record them or they will be lost for ever. On a brighter note, the Mayoress and I attended the Proms in the Park at Rushden, held in the walled garden of Hall Park. The atmosphere was very upbeat, and although it was chilly, a very good evening was enjoyed by all. Well done The Rushden Brass Band. The highlight of the past month has to have been the Whittlesey Festival. Everything fell into place and produced a fantastic day for all who attended. I opened the show, ably assisted by Effie, the young lady fighting battens disease (well done Effie). The stalls, side shows and entertainment, plus events that took place, were to a high standard and enjoyed by all. Everyone we spoke to commented on what a great day it had been and the weather crowned it. The Dakota flypast with the man leaning out of the door waving was brilliant. I would also like

to add a big “Thank you” to all who took part in the the car and motorcycle exhibits. Thank you to all concerned. If you need to contact me, please contact me directly on 01733 840046, or via the Town Clerk Mrs Susan Evans on 01733 351296

Alex Miscandlon

Whittlesey Lions Club Whittlesey Lions Club presented a cheque for £1500 to Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, following their annual fundraiser tournament at Ramsey Golf and Bowls Club. Also attending were the members of the winning golf team from The Letter B pub. Next year’s Golf Day will be Wednesday, April 20th. Anyone wishing to enter a team of four, kindly contact Whittlesey.lions@btinternet.com The club welcome visitors to their meetings - do come along one evening to see if you would like to join them. They are ordinary people who get together occasionally to raise money for local good causes and charities, but have fun whilst they’re doing it. They meet every second Monday of the month at The Letter B Pub - 7.45 to 9.30pm. For more information, see the Facebook page.

WHITTLESEY WOMEN'S INSTITUTE At September’s meeting, Gigi Stephens gave a very amusing and entertaining talk. Her passion is making embroidered bags using hessian and calico for shopping, instead of using plastic bags from the supermarkets - a very good idea, as from October, all supermarkets will be charging for their bags! She also spoke of her time living in Swaziland, and 16

D I S C O V E R I N G

her work teaching prisoners French and Yoga in the UK . The next meeting is on Tuesday October 6th, at 7:30pm at St. Andrew’s Church Hall, when Mark Knight will give a talk on ‘Archaeology in Whittlesey’.

New members are welcome, contact Ginny on 01733 205148.

| Local History by Tony Austin

The year of 1701

In this new series, we follow the development of Whittlesey from The Stone Age to present day, through the eyes of ordinary families

I

t is the year 1701, and in Coates an old man is dying. The afternoon light slowly faded from the room. Two old men, still and silent, one abed and one in a chair beside his companion. Within the plain lime washed walls, Stephen listened to the quiet sounds of the other. Every so often the regular breaths would be interrupted by a sigh, or a gasp, as the dying man struggled for air. Thus it had been for the last two days. Sharing this watch with his wife, he had brought his Bible, reading to Robert favourite passages from both the Old and New Testaments when the light permitted. Robert’s two sons took turns during the nights, but Stephen and Mary came each day. He could hear her now, in the other room, preparing a meal and warming some water to bathe the old man. Stephen got up and went to the window. The cottage faced south, having a fine view down the Green with the fens stretching away into the dusk of the evening. “It seems only yesterday,” he said, more to himself than the other, “how the sun would glint on Oldeamere when the wind ruffled the water; your mother sending us down to the boatgate to call your father home. The world has changed, has it not?” He turned and was looking at his friend when Mary came in with a bowl of water, cloth and towel. She smiled at him with the smile that still had the power to melt his heart, even after more than forty years. “Has he been awake?” she asked as she soaked and wrung out the cloth. Stephen shook his head. “I doubt he will. He’s not drank anything for what three, four days now; it cannot be long.” “Do you think it is time to call the others?” Stephen nodded. “I will send John then. There is food enough here for those who will come.” And so it was. An hour or so later, the few remaining members of the Quakers at Coates gathered in the candlelit room, between the foot of the bed and the fireplace. Stephen began reading from the Book of Corinthians. “If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels but do not have charity, then I am as a sounding brass or clanging cymbal and if I hath the gift of prophecy and know all mystery and all cunning and if I hath all faith, so as to remove mountains but hath not charity, I am no thing.... When I was but as a little childe, I spake as a little childe, I understood as a little childe; but when I was made a man, I put away those things of a little childe. For now we see through a mirrour in darknesse; but then face to face. Now I know in parte, but then I shall knowe even as I am knowen.

18

D I S C O V E R I N G

And now dwelleth faith, hope and charite, these three, but the most of these is charite.” The others sat on the chairs and stools they had brought with them. As was their custom they were silent to allow the word of God to come, if it would, to their hearts. Robert’s son John came into the room and as the latch on the door clicked his father opened his eyes. He seemed aware of those present and a brief faint smile appeared before he closed them. A few minutes later the quietness was interrupted by a long rattling gasp. Robert lifted his head up as if straining for breath and then fell back on the pillow and was silent. “And this is the Comfort of the Good, that the grave cannot hold them, and that they live as soon as they die. For Death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity. Death, then, being the way and condition of Life, we cannot love to live, if we cannot bear to die. They that love beyond the World, cannot be separated by it. Death cannot kill what never dies. Nor can Spirits ever be divided that love and live in the same Divine Principle, the Root and Record of their Friendship. If Absence be not death, neither is theirs.” *Charite, charity meant in the time of the story what we would nowadays understand as unconditional love. The second part of the Bible passage is written the way it would have been spoken by the reader; charite being pronounced the same as modern charity. **The words at the end were written by William Penn in 1693 to be spoken at Quaker funeral services.

Burns unit appeal fund The culmination of over thirty years fundraising for a local charity has been reached with over £520,000 being given to a specialist Burns Unit which treats patients from this area. The Burns Unit Appeal Fund, a registered charity, was set up to alleviate the suffering of those who have been badly burnt and help their recovery, as well as assisting their families who experience hardship visiting their loved ones. Originally set up by a group of Whittlesey people, led by the late Sheila Conning, who had been affected by several friends’ experience of burns injuries and aftercare, they campaigned vigorously for funds; holding coffee mornings, bring-and-buy sales, dances and other events to help victims and their families. These funds were added to and invested over the years, and now over thirty years on, only one of the original trustees remains, Tulip Radio’s Jan Whitbourn, who lived in Whittlesey for several years.

The fund now stands at over £800,000, and the charity has been wound up and the first tranche of funds was distributed at a ceremony at Chelmsford’s Broomfield Hospital this week. The remaining funds, which are currently invested, are being progressively encashed and will be released to the hospital in due course. It was always the aim to try to ensure that a specialised Burns Unit could be established more locally, but with the centralisation of NHS resources, now all local burns patients are transferred, after stabilisation, to the Broomfield Hospital. The Chelmsford based hospital has invested several millions of pounds in a state of the art unit, whose catchment area includes all of East Anglia, plus South Lincolnshire, and the hospital has agreed that this huge sum of money will be targeted towards the care and wellbeing of patients and their families from this part of the country.

Extraordinary Meeting of Whittlesey town Council

Last evening, Tuesday September 8th, Whittlesey Town Council held an Extraordinary Town Council meeting in the Whittlesey Christian Church, to deplore the recent decision by Fenland District Council Planning Committee to grant planning permisssion under reference F/YR15/0134/F for up to 220 houses to be built on the Showfields site, north of Whittlesey. The meeting was chaired by Councillor David Mason, and attracted 74 members of the public, some of whom gave their comments on the planning committee decision. A motion was proposed by Councillor Chris Boden that a Working Party be set up to explore the possibilities of overturning the decision of the FDC Planning Committee, by 24

either requesting a calling in of the decision by the Secretary of State, or by applying for a Judicial Review. This motion was seconded by Councillor Martin Curtis, and passed by a majority of the Whittlesey Town Council, with two abstentions. A Working Party was formed consisting of Cllrs Boden, Curtis, Mason and the WTC Chairman of Planning, Cllr Mrs Rita Jolley with Cllr Ray Whitwell being appointed as a reserve. The Working party will report their findings to a meeting of Whittlesey Town Council on Wednesday October 14th, 2015. Cllr. David K M Mason Whittlesey St Andrew District

| A word from Brian Smithyman Our Assumptions Are Not Always Right Having spent most of my career involved in the needs of people from all walks of life, I have observed the danger of absolutely relying on the accuracy of assumptions. While waiting for a connecting flight, a lady bought a cup of coffee and packet of biscuits, then sat in the airport lounge to relax while reading the newspaper. Becoming aware of a rustling noise from behind her paper, she was amazed to see a neatly dressed man helping himself to her biscuits. Not wanting to make a scene, she leaned over and took a biscuit. The gentleman continued helping himself until just one biscuit remained. She was now so angry she didn’t dare allow herself to say anything. To her amazement, the man broke the remaining biscuit in half, pushed one half across the table to her then, before leaving, ate the other half. She was still inwardly raging when her flight was finally announced. Reaching into her handbag to get the ticket, she was shocked and embarrassed to find her pack of unopened biscuits. What should have been a relaxed wait, turned into unnecessary pressure. Wrong assumptions can be dangerous, especially if we convince ourselves that they are right. They can contribute to such things as broken relationships, fear, stress, and being left with the proverbial ‘egg on your face’, as the ultimate evidence conclusively proves you were wrong. I was taken by a friend to a group meeting he was attending, before he could formally introduce me, someone I had never met, began speaking with great conviction and unflatteringly about what this man, called Brian Smithyman, believed. Once he

had finished, my friend embarrassingly introduced me and, in his usual ‘no messing style’, clearly set the record straight. The previous gentleman sat quiet for the remaining meeting, his wrong assumption had not only embarrassed him, but had also resulted in him losing credibility as far as opinions were concerned. When asked what gift I would most like to receive, my answer was simple: ‘the gift of hindsight beforehand.’ Because life can put us into situations where we must form opinions or make choices, it is inevitable that some will be right, and others wrong. We can, however, take a few simple steps to limit the amount of times we are wrong: a) Never make assumptions based on secondhand information, no matter how reliable you think the person is. b) Never be too proud to acknowledge you were wrong. c) Don’t be in a hurry to form assumptions.

| A word from - Revd. Nigel and Revd. Gill Nigel (203676) and Gill (202563)

As this article is being written, the combine harvesters are chugging across the fields. Farmers and their employees are working long hours to gather in the corn, to provide part of our staple diet, and to them we give thanks. It is so important to recognise and acknowledge the importance of harvest. It reminds us of God’s presence and the wonder of Creation, also the gifts which God has given to us. In our four churches, we celebrate harvest at a special service called ‘Harvest Festival’. We come together to thank God for the gifts He has created, and His sun and rain have nurtured. There are the harvests of the land, sea, underground and other countries. At harvest, we also try to help others less fortunate than ourselves by supporting food/farm related charities. This year we will be giving foodstuffs (dried, tinned or in a packet) to the Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid project and money to WaterAid. The funds raised from the WaterAid Harvest 2015 Appeal will be used to bring safe water and a chance to grow crops (a reliable source of income), to people living in poor, remote villages in Madagascar and around the world. At our services, there will be an opportunity, for those who wish to do so, to bring forward either food

| Fishing news

28

or money, and we will ask God’s blessing on all who provided, and those who will benefit from these gifts. We will be celebrating Harvest Festival in our churches on Sunday October 4th. The service will include hymns, Bible readings, a talk and prayers. A warm welcome awaits all. The services are 9.30 a.m. at Holy Trinity, Coates and St Andrew’s, Whittlesey; and 11.00 a.m. at St Mary’s, Whittlesey and St Thomas’, Pondersbridge. A brief update about St Mary’s clock. There are severe problems with the clock face mechanisms and we continue to wait for repairs. There are too few engineers to do this work, therefore it takes longer. Please be patient and be assured that we will restore the clock and bells. With every blessing, Gill and Nigel.

by Ken Wade

Our local stillwaters have been in fine form over the past few weeks, but as we head into the winter months, it’s time to cut down on the feed and perhaps even scale down the tackle. Throughout the winter months, the carp can still be caught but a more refined approach will be needed. Look to fish a slightly smaller hook, you can still get away with a strong hook length if you are concentrating in the margins, but generally 5lb line will be required. Feeding will be the key; most will start on the little and often basis until you are confident the fish are going to need more bait, with red maggot and soft pellet the preferred baits at this time of year, along with sweetcorn. October is still recognised as the start of the pike fishing season, even though these days many will fish throughout the season on local Fenland drains for predators.

D I S C O V E R I N G

There have been plenty of fish taken on spinners and lures, with anglers adopting a roving approach. Most will be switching to dead bait fishing, with early mornings and dusk the prime times to catch some of the big fish we all know inhabit the drains. Even some of the smaller drains can produce big fish. Glassmoor Bank is one venue well worth putting in some time and effort, and of course the Twenty Foot drain usually produces good quality predator fishing throughout the winter months. Anglers these days are spoilt for choice as far as pike baits are concerned, but most will rely on the recognised prime baits that have stood the test of time. If you have a selection of mackerel, smelt, roach and lamprey, you will not go far wrong. Occasionally others work, such as perch, skimmers, eels or sprats, but most will return time and again to the top four. Don’t neglect the roving approach through the winter months, I know the bigger fish usually fall to static baits but on a frosty morning a wander along the banks of fen drains can often produce some exciting fishing.

Solar Panels time to fit them

‌NOW

Thinking of installing solar panels on your property? Take a look to find out why now could be financially the very best time to do it. Thousands of homeowners across the country have installed solar panels over the last few years, saving money on their energy bills, protecting themselves from future price rises and, best of all, getting paid by the government for the electricity they generate. This has made solar energy a sound investment and given homeowners a healthy return. However, recent announcements made by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) strongly suggest that Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments are to see drastic cuts in 2016. In fact, the Feed-in Tariff review document, published on August 27th by the DECC, laid out plans to cut the Feed-in Tariff for small scale solar PV installations by as much as 87%. Although the plans have not yet been confirmed, it is likely that all bands of the tariff will be affected quite severely. However, it is the installations in the 0-10kW band (almost all domestic installations) that will be hardest hit. In addition, a review of the default degression (applied to all tariffs) is expected to reduce the Feed-in Tariff to zero, for installations under 10kw, by 2019.

30

D I S C O V E R I N G

If you are considering installing a solar PV system, our advice is to ACT NOW, or risk a significant reduction in the pay back your system generates. All systems installed prior to the cut-off date of 31st December will receive the Feed-in Tariff currently shown on the Ofgem website, which is up to 12.47 pence per kWh. After January 1st 2016, it could be as low as 1.63 pence per kWh! Princeenergy is a registered MCS installer, and can offer advice on all aspects of solar installations, from products and the suitability of your property to potential paybacks and government schemes. As a trading division of Princebuild, a family-run business that has been trading for over forty years, you can be safe in the knowledge that Princeenergy will be here to provide support and servicing through the life of your solar panels and beyond.

Whittlesey Festival was the best yet Photographs by The Studio on behalf of The Whittlesey Festival Committee Organisers of the Whittlesey Festival are delighted with the success of this year’s event, which took place on Sunday September 6th, and we would like to thank everyone who came on the day for all their support - we couldn’t have done it without you. Blue sky and sunshine were in abundance, creating the perfect back-drop for 6 – 7,000 people to enjoy an absolutely fantastic day. The day started with the parade from Broad Street. Thanks again for all those who lined the streets and cheered along the route, helping to create a real carnival atmosphere, as the parade wound its way to the Market Square. After the official opening by the Mayor of Whittlesey, children enjoyed free face-painting,

32

D I S C O V E R I N G

puppet shows and fairground rides, amongst many other activities. There was plenty to do for the adults too, with numerous stalls to visit, and everyone enjoyed watching the various dance and music presentations, including the Rug-Cutters Lindy Hop dancers, The Solas School of Irish Dance, and the traditional sound of the Haverettes All Girl Marching Band and the Peterborough Highland Band. The streets were lined with over 120 spectacular vintage vehicles, adding a touch of nostalgia to the day. A spokesman from this group said, “We are delighted to support the Whittlesey Festival year on year, as it is by far our favourite event – we simply love the atmosphere and the visitors are always genuinely interested and passionate about us being there – we wouldn’t miss it.”

Whittlesea | October 2015

Another ‘Wow moment’ of this year’s Festival was the World War II Dakota fly-past. It was truly an amazing sight and a breath-taking experience for the crowds. It was very emotional too, as it served as a reminder of all those loyal folk who fought on our behalf during the war.

The Festival Schools Art Exhibition was held at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street, with work on display from local schools, including Park Lane, Alderman Jacobs, New Road, and Sir Harry Smith Community College (SHSCC). Prizes and trophies were awarded on Festival day by the Mayor of Whittlesey. Look out for an exclusive feature on the Art Competition in the November issue of “Discovering Whittlesea”. Once again, a huge thank you to everyone and we look forward to seeing you at next year's Festival, on Sunday September 11th, 2016.If you would like more information as to how you can get involved, please contact Brian Smithyman on 01733 752093 or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005.

Whittlesey Extravaganza Committee

The date is set, the acts are booked, and all we need now is YOU!!! The Christmas Extravaganza will be on Friday December 11th on Whittlesey Market Square from 5pm to 8pm. Father Christmas is booked, as are the elves and fairies to decorate his grotto. Punch and Judy are booked; the balloon modeller is practising, as are the Cambridgeshire Caledonian Pipe band. 20Twenty are bringing their theatre group and Whittlesey Fire Service is bringing the Fire Engine. There will be the usual Charity stalls raising funds for their special group. Whittlesey Lions are already working on the Children’s window competition. It all needs to be perfect.

We are hoping that many local businesses will stay open whilst the Extravaganza is in progress, giving all of you an extra chance to search for those all important Christmas presents. Some businesses will be waiting with mince pies and a little glass of something festive for their visitors. All the festivities will draw to a close with carol singing supported by the Salvation Army band and local singing groups. Whilst our name has changed, our Committee is made up of an assortment of volunteers, some from Lions, Straw Bear, Tangent, and others just keen to help. Enquiries to Roger Brown, tel: 01733 202884.

Goat’s cheese moussaka

Just so many interesting flavours go into the making of a moussaka, and the combination of aubergine, minced beef and goat’s cheese, seems a perfect fit. This is a dish that takes time to prepare and cook, but you will be well rewarded with a fantastic tasting dish.

Ingredients:

Simon Norris,

J Jones Butchers

Method: 1. Pre-heat the oven to 190°C / gas 5. 2. In a large pan, cook the onions in the olive oil for 2-3 minutes until soft but not coloured; then add the beef and cook until it has browned. Drain off the excess fat from the frying pan. 3. Stir in the garlic, cinnamon, chilli and thyme. Cook for one minute before adding the chopped tomatoes and oregano. Simmer for about 45 minutes to one hour, season with salt and pepper, stirring every so often. 4. Place the sliced aubergines on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, season with a little salt and pepper, and pop into the oven until nicely browned turning once.

34

• 3 aubergines, sliced into 1cm rings

• 4 tbsp olive oil and a further 100ml • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 600g minced beef • 3 garlic cloves, chopped and deseeded • 1 red chilli, chopped • ¼ tsp cinnamon • 2x400g tinned chopped tomatoes • 1 tbsp oregano, chopped • 1 tsp fresh thyme

D I S C O V E R I N G

For the sauce:

• 50g goat’s butter • 50g plain flour • 1 litre goat’s milk • 150g goat’s cheese, coarsely grated • 1 tbsp parsley, chopped • 2 egg yolks • Sprinkling of paprika

To make the béchamel sauce 1. Melt the goat’s butter in a medium saucepan, stir in the flour, remove from heat and gradually stir in the goat’s milk, return to a low heat and cook for five minutes, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens. Then remove from the heat. 2. Stir in 100g of the goat’s cheese, chopped parsley and egg yolks. Season with salt and pepper. To Assemble 1. Cover the base of an oven-proof dish, approx 25cm x 20cm, with the mince. Top with the aubergine slices, then the cheese sauce. Finally scatter over the last of the goat’s cheese, sprinkle with paprika and bake for 30-40 minutes until golden brown. 2. Serve with a mixed salad, and warm crusty bread

Four years on and Vesuvio has a brand new look! Italian restaurant, Vesuvio, has a brand new look, thanks again to interior designer Simon Parr Black

Simon Parr Black, Interior Designer, explained more: “It was a pleasure to be asked back to Vesuvio to assist with their refurbishment. We wanted to update the restaurant and to give it a fresh feel, whilst addressing a couple of issues they have had acoustically, and of course, not throwing out items that had been installed on the last refresh. “A new floor and colour scheme were the most obvious things to look at, plus we wanted to have some of the artwork to depict Mount Vesuvius and Naples - where Peppe is from. We then commissioned some fabric to be printed in a design especially for Maria and Peppe, and this was used to upholster some of the walls to reduce the noise levels. New wall lights in bronze and hand-blown glass were brought in from Italy to finish the look. “The new look is perfect for enjoying the great food and wines on offer. Come on in and take a look. We really enjoy it, we hope you do too.”

Maria added: “In October, it will be four years since we opened Vesuvio. From day one, our aim was to offer Whittlesey, our home town, something different, an Italian restaurant run by Italians. “Peppe and I have, we think, managed this with the help of our fabulous Italian chefs, Franco Boschetto and Camilio Boschetto. 36

“For my front of house, I have always wanted to employ local students from Sir Harry Smith Community College, which was also the school I attended as well,” Maria explained. “My students are hard-working, and nearly all of them are studying A-Levels and will move on to university. Some have left for full-time jobs. “I am so proud of all of my staff and students; they have been a real asset to our business. “These students are our future, and we are offering, not just a part-time job, but future life skills and great experience.”

PETERBOROUGH’S NEWEST EDUCATIONAL OPTION FOR 14 – 19 YEAR OLDS

OPENING SEPTEMBER 2016

The Greater Peterborough UTC (GPUTC) is opening in September 2016 and will provide students with a world class technical education. Our school will be your bridge to work or university by providing a mixture of academic qualifications up to GSCE and A Level, plus a set of technical ones too. All UTCs around the country have specialisms and we are no exception. Our first specialism is engineering and in particular automation systems and control. If on the other hand construction, design, architecture or surveying appeals to you then our second specialism, the built environment, is just the qualification for you.

Our school works like this: the local industry and local businesses, as well as the major sponsors, shape the curriculum. Our sponsors are not only shaping our engineering and built environment specialisms but developing employer projects and work placements; enabling the ‘learning by doing’ approach central to our method of

40 D I S C O V E R I N G

teaching. The GPUTC and its sponsors then take this one step further as we guarantee all our student graduates with job interviews through our employer sponsors. We will be providing a unique opportunity for a state-of-the-art technical education in our new £12 million building. We are about providing a one off advantage, an employability advantage to people who join us. We are hoping students will stay with us for four years from Year 10 all the way through; they may join us in the sixth form and just stay for two years, but the programs are designed to be progressive. They will take young people into employment, on to apprenticeship routes or into higher education, and we hope that in 10 years time our alumni will look back on their experience with us as a unique, fulfilling opportunity they have been given. Our next open day is Saturday October 17th from 10am – 2pm; you can sign up at www. gputc.com Apply now to the GPUTC for a year 10 or 12 entry in 2016 - The choice for engineers, builders, designer and architects of the future.

PRE-SCHOOL CELEBRATE 30 YEARS WITH GOOD OFSTED AND A NEW GARDEN!

Thirty years ago, New Road Playgroup was set up in an empty classroom at New Road School, and it proved to be very successful. The Pre-school was, and still is, run independently and received no financial support from the school. By 1989, the school numbers had increased and the group had to find alternative accommodation. Permission was given to site a Portakabin within the school grounds. After much hard work by parents, grandparents, friends and the school staff, it opened in October 1989. In 2000, the committee, staff and parents decided to rename it the ‘New Road Pre-school’, as it remains today, with its teddy bear logo. During 2007, Pre-school was approached by Cambridgeshire County Council to be the pre-school provider within the new Whittlesey Children’s Centre, which was to be located within the New Road Primary School building. After much discussion, it was agreed that Pre-school would move into the Children’s Centre in June 2008 and the mobile classroom was demolished. During the summer term of 2014, the pre-school was approved to take two-year-olds under the “Free Twos” funding scheme. In June 2015, a knock on the door saw the arrival of Ofsted to inspect the setting. After spending a day observing, it was rated ‘good’, adding:

• Children are happy at this inviting preschool. They share warm relationships with their key persons. This helps to promote children's sense of security and to form strong emotional attachments and bonds. • Children learn and acquire good skills in preparation for their next stage of education, such as school. • Parents are well informed of all aspects of their children's care and progress on a regular basis. During the summer break, Peterborough-based company, Carillion, provided the resources to transform the pre-school garden into a bright, colourful and attractive area for the children to play in and relax. Manager, Sue Page, said, “We now have a fantastic new garden with colourful teapot planters made from old tyres, a new planter for herbs and plants, which the children can use in the mud kitchen, and brightly decorated sheds. We cannot thank the team from Carillion enough for doing such a great job.” This year, the Pre-school will celebrate its thirtieth year, and plans are currently being made to celebrate this.

More than just nails

As you step into D7 Nail and Beauty Lounge, what first strikes you isn’t the array of beautiful polishes (of which there are over 150 of every colour you can imagine), and it isn’t the trendy and fashionable decor (which is bang-on-trend), but the thing that struck me most was the friendly and welcoming team, headed by the down-to-earth Penny. Within minutes, I felt at home and comfortable. D7 is the flagship nail and beauty lounge of Penny Glonek, an inspiring woman with big ambitions. Originally a mobile nail technician, Penny set up her salon in Lovells Court, off High Causeway, over two years ago and hasn’t looked back. Her ten years of experience has built a clientele that travel as far from Bedford and Stamford. “I think people are willing to travel to someone they know and trust,” explained Penny. And with free car parking close by, a well-equipped beauty lounge, and pretty much any treatment you could wish for at

reasonable prices, it’s easy to see why Penny has loyal clients. Making up her dream team, Penny has Katie, who specialises in San Tropez spray tans, Bridget, a qualified nail technician and Millie, their young apprentice. With acrylic and gel nails still proving hugely popular, Penny explained that there’s something for everyone and a colour to match. Whether you want beautiful nails for a special occasion, or a tan ready for the festive season, you can have it all under one roof. Even better, there’s 25% off nails on a Tuesday and Wednesday, and spray tans are only £10 on a Friday. So what does the future hold for Penny and her team at D7? “Next year I hope to open a training academy, right here in the Whittlesey lounge,” explained Penny. “That way I can train future beauticians.” She also has plans for a new salon in Peterborough, and is looking to get a sun bed that can offer blue light therapy - perfect for those suffering from eczema or psoriasis. Watch this space! For a friendly face, qualified technicians, a good old chat and to feel like a million dollars, you can’t go wrong at D7 Nail and Beauty Lounge,

whether you want beautiful nails, a natural looking tan, pedicure, manicure or wax.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better.

Diverticulosis – Diverticulitis Explained It is a commonly identified problem yet when asked few people understand what is happening inside of us. This article will change that, giving you a clear understanding of the process behind diverticulitis/ osis. In all cases within the body, before you can understand what is wrong you must first understand how things work normally. Diverticulitosis/ilitis is a problem with the intestinal wall. So lets start with the normal structure of a bowel wall. The bowel is made of primarily two sections, the small and large intestines. The main difference is that the small intestines are a smaller diameter tube. The structure of the walls is essentially the same. The intestines are a long tube made of 4 distinct concentric layers (see our unique homemade diagram!). The layer 1 [the layer in contact with food] is a very thin layer of adsorptive/secreatory cells which breakdown and absorb the passing chewed up food. The second layer is a stronger connective tissue layer which carries the blood vessels/lympathic fluid for which the absorbed products are transported away. The third layer is a muscular layer which provides the contractions to mix and move the food along. Covering all of this is a thin cling-film layer [layer 4] which connects the intestines to all the other structures within the local vicinity. In the case diverticulosis, the muscular layer becomes weak with some small tears forming within them. This creates a gap and because the bowels are continuously churning and moving it can cause the first two layers to push through the gap created in layer 3. Subsequently we get a small pouch forming, termed a diverticula. This pouch sits outside of the normal flow of food moving. However, over time food may collect within the pouch. If the food gets stuck there for a prolonged period of time (lets say greater than 24hrs) then it can start to irritate the lining of the pouch. This causes inflammation and an episode of bloating, cramping pain and altered bowel movements (constipation or diarrhoea). The patient here is termed to have diverticulitis. If the food stays for a time in which bacteria can multiple to critical level, then we can also have fever, nausea and an increased white blood count, i.e. an infection. The pouches rarely disappear and are there for the rest of the patients live. However, as you can appreciate as long as the food does not get stuck in the pouch the patient will be relatively asymptomatic. The patient is thus termed as having diverticulosis [non-inflamed asymptomatic outpouches]. The solution to the problem is clearly to avoid getting food stuck in the pouches. Thus eating food that passes through the bowels easily, minimising the straining through the bowels and maintaining the mobility of the intestines is upmost important. Guidance on general foods to eat can easily be found on the internet, specific advise to your system can be gained via a nutritionist and maintaining the mobility of the intestines can be achieved with osteopathic techniques. Take care and we hope you have gained some useful information from this article.

Fireworks

Fireworks and Dogs

Bonfire Night is fast approaching. On the actual day, it’s best if you can take the dog for a long walk in the light of day, before the fireworks start. Create a safe area for your dog, either a room or a crate, that you can make the dog feel safe in. Close all of the curtains and put on a television or radio to help cover the sound of the fireworks outside. Although it’s difficult, try not to over reassure your pet, this sometimes can add to their stress. Instead, try to continue as normal. Make sure the area the dog is in is secure. When scared, animals can try to run, and if they escape, they can get themselves lost. Ensuring your dog is microchipped and the details are up-to-date, will make reuniting you with your pet easier, should they run away. Finally, look out for signs of stress, which could include panting, pacing, drooling, destructiveness, a fast heart-rate, faecal incontinence and aggression.

Fireworks and Cats

Cats are more difficult to contain, so make sure your cat is indoors long before it gets dark. Finding them at the last minute can be difficult, and once the fireworks start, the cat may hide. Make sure the cat flap (if you have one), is locked securely. Provide the cat with a litter tray, as at some point, they will need the toilet.

As with dogs, close the curtains and put on a TV or a radio. Make sure your cat has somewhere to hide, such as a box or a space under the bed. Stress in cats can be seen with climbing up high, trying to run away, soiling in the house, not wanting to eat, aggression and hissing.

Small Mammals

All pets can be affected, not just dogs and cats, so make sure your rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets feel safe and are secure. Most rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets are kept outside, so the fireworks can upset them just as much as our indoor pets. Try, where possible, to bring them inside, or place them in a shed or garage. Cover the hutch or run with something to muffle the sound, and keep out the flashing lights. Provide them with plenty of bedding to bury themselves in. Hiding their favourite treats about the habitat, so they can forage, will help keep them distracted. Keep handling your pets to a minimum. In all cases try not to leave your pets alone. On your return, if they have been destructive or messed in the house, they should not be disciplined as this will only worry them more. Before firework season starts, it’s sensible to plan ahead, especially if you know your pets are going to be frightened. Delivering Simple Financial Advice That really works

The financial future A couple of statistics:

• There are currently four people of working age supporting each pensioner in Britain. By 2035, this number is expected to fall to 2.5, and, by 2050, to just two. • Today, for the first time, Britain’s over-65s now outnumber people under the age of 16. (data: Office for National Statistics)

Therefore, if there are fewer people paying National Insurance (which is where state pension payments come from), it is logical to assume that the time at which pension benefits commence, or the amount collected, will need to change, otherwise the budget will not balance.

Implication – more pressure on state benefits?

The government have assured us that state pension benefits will continue to be protected by inflationlinked, ‘triple lock’ annual increases. The new, simplified benefit commences in April 2016, where there will be winners and losers – but there are some opportunities for those approaching retirement age, if you know where to look.

How can we use this?

want in retirement (where do I want to be?) The next stage is to evaluate the plans already in place (where am I now?); then draw up a plan to bridge the gap. There are still many tax-efficient options to help your savings go further and, with greater flexibility in drawing benefits, a well-designed pension plan could be a valuable part of your planning portfolio. For example: a contribution of £1,000 will be increased to £1,250 by the addition of tax-relief. This might be a better return than an alternative investment strategy. Depending on your tax situation, there could be further tax savings associated with this action.

Implications of new legislation:

Some contribution limits may restrict how much could be invested in a single tax year. However, many individuals have a great opportunity in using this as part of their portfolio. There may also be Estate Planning opportunities in using a pension in many circumstances. If you want to explore how this feeds into your financial planning, please book a free initial consultation. The value of investments, pensions and the income they produce can fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

The first stage is to define the level of income you

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have

struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal

satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much

a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Whittlesey In Bloom

“In Bloom” RESULTS

We have discussed the positioning, following the earlier comments, and resolved to once again speak to CCC. We would appreciate your comments about the siting of the planters before we get them planted up for next summer. You can either telephone or e-mail me (details given below), or drop a line into the Town Council offices – please address to me. We will soon be removing the summer bedding from the Jubilee Gardens at the Manor and also the Pound. Lots of work is needed to keep the town looking good during the winter. We will, of course, be planting up again for the winter/spring displays. There is always work to be done and we hope to carry on with your help and suggestions to enhance our town. Once again, on behalf of the dedicated “Whittlesey in Bloom” and “Friends of the Cemetery” team of volunteers - thank you for your support. If you would like to help our town/environment and make new like-minded friends, please get in touch. Everyone is welcome! Kay Mayor; Chairman: Whittlesey in Bloom/ Friends of Whittlesey Cemetery t: 01733 204944 e: kayfmayor48@gmail.com

On August 20th there was a by-election in Bassenhally Ward for Whittlesey Town Council at which Martin Curtis was re-elected. I’m sorry that at the time of writing this, we don’t know the results yet ourselves (although they will be printed below). All will be revealed to us on September 17th at the ceremony in Ware, Hertfordshire. I would like to thank everyone who stopped at our table at the festival on September 6th, and complimented us on our work in the town. Also, thank you for the donations made into our bucket. It was a brilliant festival and the weather was just perfect. Who could ask for more? Unfortunately, we did receive one criticism; although a couple of comments had been made to us previously, regarding the siting of the new barrier planters on the Queen Street and High Causeway corners, this one criticism made at the festival was rather more than a statement – more in the way of a threat. All things can be discussed and hopefully resolved without idle threats being made – or was it an idle threat? This person has threatened to poison the plants in these new planters, should they be located in the same places next year. Before the planters were positioned, we had to get permission from Cambridgeshire County Council. The one stipulation from CCC was that we should not put them directly next to the pedestrian crossings – we actually had not intended to do that as we are very conscious of pedestrians being visible by motorists.

JURASSIC WORLD

Enter Jurassic World, the third highest grossing movie of all time, and the long anticipated return of prehistoric dinosaurs.

We first set eyes on these frightening creatures back in 1993, when Steven Spielberg wowed and delighted audiences with a world that seemed so believable and equally terrifying. Fast forward twelve years, and Jurassic World takes audiences back to a world where dinosaurs are alive, only this time they’re part of a trouble-plagued theme park. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, the film has large-scale action sequences that do the master proud. There are moments of real terror as park visitors are plucked, one by one, by pterodactyls, that plays homage to Hitchcock’s The Birds. The story itself unfolds as the park unleashes a new bigger, badder meat-eater, designed to attract new visitors. The premise, “These people never learn”, is echoed by one character. Old and new fans will enjoy this fantasy, revel in the moments which make you want to hide behind a duvet, and feel enormously glad that you’ve not paid a visit to Jurassic World.

Family problems with Social Services (care proceedings) Bringing children up can be difficult, and sometimes the problems which are encountered by parents can get out of control and Social Services may then become involved. It is important to remember that this does not always mean that your children will be removed from your care. Social Services are under an obligation to work with families, to try and resolve problems, and removing children from parents is always the last resort. The process however, and their sudden involvement, can be a frightening experience, and it is important to take advice from a children’s panel solicitor at the earliest opportunity.

send you a PLO (Public Law Outline) letter, inviting you to attend a meeting with your solicitor. You must take this letter seriously; failure to do so will result in the matter being placed before the court. If Social Services do take the matter to court, you have the right to challenge what they are saying. However, it is vital that you obtain the correct legal advice. Changes in the law mean that care proceedings must be concluded within twenty-six weeks. Therefore, if you do not act quickly, it can often be too late. Free Legal Aid is available for all areas of law dealing with Social Services.

The most common reason for Social Services taking their concerns about children to court is because the parents do not co-operate with them, to try and resolve the problems. Taking early legal advice means that you know where you stand from the start, and can be advised on the best course of action to take to solve the problems. Sometimes, it is not possible to resolve the problems. Social Services must provide you with notice that they are considering issuing care proceedings. They will

Great results for Sir Harry Smith Last month saw students at Sir Harry Smith Community College receive their A-Level and GCSE results, and there was plenty to smile about. In a letter addressed to the parents of students at the school, Principal Jonathan Digby proudly highlighted his school’s successes: “At A level, the percentage of students gaining A*-B grades has increased from 44% to 55% and those gaining A*-C grades has also increased from 72% to 80%. The overall pass rate is at 98%. I am particularly pleased with the fact that 10% of the results were at grade A*, which is a great achievement for the students and their teachers. “The students have worked extremely hard this year to achieve this level of success and they deserve to feel very proud of their exam results. “In particular, I would like to congratulate Luke Baxter, who gained A*, A*, A*, A, and is going to read Computing at Cambridge University. “I would also like to congratulate the Year 11 cohort of students who have produced an excellent set of GCSE results this summer. Students and teachers have worked really hard to achieve 62% 5 A*-C

grades, including English and Maths, which is an increase from last year. “All these results have been achieved through the hard work of the students and the dedication of all the teachers and staff at the College. It was lovely to see students with tears of joy when they opened their results envelopes in the summer.” Well done to you all!

A word from the RBL First of all, we must congratulate the organisers and helpers of the Whittlesey Festival for putting on another very successful event. Again the weather was fine and sunny, which helped everyone to have a good day. The Whittlesey branch standard, together with the Old Comrades standard, led the parade only to be upstaged by Harley the St. Bernard on the motorcycle and sidecar. Harley is a frequent visitor to Whittlesey, and thanks to his owner for attending once again. The RBL Riders branch were also taking part with their motorcycles and a marquee. Our Poppy Appeal teddy tombola did very well and raised £315.50, which was a new record for the festival. Our thanks to all those who came along to have a go and support the Poppy Appeal. Thanks also to all those who donated cuddly toys, as without them, we would not be able to raise this sort of money. We use around two hundred every year, so if you have any that need a new home, please let us know. Our next fund raising event is the annual Band Concert at the Ivy Leaf Club, on Friday October 30th. This is always a very entertaining evening, with tickets at £5.00 each and available from myself 66

Knighton who live locally, would they please get in touch with me, as we are trying to collate as much information as possible about him. and our station was on the front line in a constant state of alert. I left Germany in July 1961 and in August 1961, the Berlin Wall was built.

Ken is a retired bank manager. He is Chairman of the Whittlesey branch of the Royal British Legion, past Chairman of Fenland District Council, past Chairman of Whittlesey Town Council and Past Chairman of the Whittlesea Society.

3) WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? George Burns and Groucho Marx. I very much like their brand of dry humour and I am sure that a conversation with them would be very funny, and because of their life experiences, it would be absolutely riveting.

1) WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD?

4) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS?

I was born in 1938 in Bury, Lancashire; a cotton mill town north of Manchester, so my early memories were of the Second World War. It was a hard time. Our playground was a bombsite, but we made lifelong friends and we still have a re-union every ten years. I remember very well the street party for VE Day.

Conscientious, hard-working, trustworthy, loyal and caring.

2) WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY? The gym teacher at senior school was Harry Snowden. He organized all the sports and was well-respected by all the pupils. He was also the Commanding Officer of the school Air Training Corps, and I enjoyed being a member and visiting RAF bases around the country very much. I joined the Royal Air Force in 1958 and served for three years, mostly in Germany. It was a very interesting time being at the height of the Cold War, 68

5) IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT WHITTLESEY, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? With all the development that is taking place in, and around, Whittlesey and the problem with traffic congestion, I feel that a by-pass is essential - as has been proved in the other three Fenland market towns. 6) WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU? Work hard and do your best at school, because a good education gives the foundation to a better life.
