Welcome to our November edition... As I write this, we’ve had some pretty lovely autumn weather. But as we head into November, and the days start to get shorter and colder, we all need something to look forward to. And you’re in luck, because this issue is packed full of wonderful things that will be coming up soon, such as the Whittlesey Extravaganza (see page 32), and the Arnold’s Lane Christmas lights switch-on (see page 21).
Welcome to our November issue of “Discovering Whittlesea”. This month is a busy issue with lots of important information and local updates. We’ve got some news on the King’s Dyke bridge on page 67, plus some important information about our local street lights on page 6. There’s also a spotlight on Whittlesey’s very own boxing
There’s also some information about the local bus service, and different ways you can get involved in the community and volunteer. Finally, a very dear friend of mine is organising a charity music event, raising funds for Anaya Aid (to help Syrian refugees). Please do support the evening - and you can find out all of the details on page 36.

Bus Services in the Whittlesey and surrounding areas At a meeting of the Whittlesey Town Council on July 8th, I was tasked with investigating the needs of local residents following the demise of Judd's Transport, and subsequent complaints raised about the future bus services in the Whittlesey area. Following a local press campaign, I received seventeen handwritten letters, twenty-nine e-mails, two signed petitions numbering a total of forty-nine residents, and various comments on social media, all of which are enclosed for your perusal. The general consensus of opinion is that, following the withdrawal of Judd's Transport, a monopoly situation has now developed in favour of Stagecoach, resulting in a number of comments and complaints. In summary, they mainly relate to: • The present timetable offered by Stagecoach is insufficient to meet the needs of residents both now, and in the immediate future, taking into consideration that over 1,000 new homes have been passed by planning authorities in the Whittlesey area. • Key areas of Whittlesey, such as New Road and Drybread Road, are no longer being serviced, to the detriment of older residents and young families. • Employment possibilities in Peterborough are being reduced by the lack of bus transport after 6.40pm. • The Whittlesey railway station, at the present time, is not fit for purpose as an alternative means of transport, particularly with its location to the south of the town. • Customer service on Stagecoach, and in particular the attitude of some drivers, leaves a lot to be desired. • The frequency of buses has suffered without an alternative supplier. • There is evidence of increased overcrowding on buses at peak times. I would therefore respectfully request a working party to be set up to consider alternative methods of servicing the public in the immediate area. Current suggestions that might wish to be considered are for Cambridgeshire County Council to put out to tender a bus service to replace and extend that previous provided by Judd's Transport, or the review of budgets to examine the feasibility of reducing subsidies to extend the use of Community Transport. This has been sent to the Transport Manager for his consideration. In the meantime, I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to send me your comments. Cllr David K M Mason, Whittlesey St Andrew District. 6

WHITTLESEY COMMUNITY CAR SCHEME NEEDS YOU! We are looking for volunteers, both male and female, to join our very busy team of drivers who take local residents to their essential appointments. Our passengers generally don’t have their own means of transport, and are often lonely or housebound, so this service is a lifeline to many. You’ll receive a generous mileage allowance - and hopefully a great sense of satisfaction that you’ve made a difference to our passengers' lives. If you are able to spare a few hours on weekdays, at times to suit yourself, please contact Anne on 07810 427483 for more details. THANK YOU!
STREETLIGHTS
Cambridgeshire County Council has to save £100 million by 2019. One cost-cutting measure, from April next year, will be to switch off many of the county’s streetlights from midnight until 6am every night, with most of the remaining lights dimmed, to save electricity. Streetlights on main roads and at vulnerable junctions won’t be switched off. Whittlesey Town Councillors considered whether paying almost £10,000 a year to keep all of the town’s streetlights lit throughout the night would be a cost-effective use of local taxpayers’ money. The Town Council agreed not to pay to keep the lights on, which county are proposing to switch off. However, we’ve sent Highways a detailed list of specific streetlights for them to reconsider because of safety fears. The Town Council will carefully monitor the effects of the switch-off next year and will take action if it appears necessary.

eaves are falling rapidly now and wind and rain are on the increase. If you have a greenhouse move tender plants into it to protect from frost, gales and freezing rains. If you don’t have a greenhouse, group pots together and wrap with fleece to protect the plant. You can maintain interest in the garden by digging out new beds and borders and replacing plants that have succumbed to the season. There are a few hardy little souls that will flourish at this time of the year such as cyclamen, pansies, violas and primroses. Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up. l Continue to cut down fading herbaceous perennials. > Cuttings can be added to the compost heap. It’s also still a good time to lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials. l Lift and store dahlias, cannas and tuberous bedding begonias that have been hit by the first frosts. > Store in a dry, frost free dark place in a layer of sawdust. Check occasionally over winter to ensure they are still dry and rot free. Remove any that look suspicious to prevent the risk of further infection.

l Plant roses. > Avoid planting in areas where roses were previously growing to prevent disease. l Continue to rake fallen leaves from the lawn. > If left they will block out light and moisture from the grass encouraging disease. l Treat wooden structures. > Wooden items such as benches, fences or pergolas will all benefit from treatment with a good quality preservative to protect from the worst that winter can throw at them.

Future Music Events on the Buttercross This summer, Whittlesey Town Council sponsored two music festivals on the Buttercross to fulfil its promise to encourage community events in the centre of the town, following the relocation of the bus stop to Grosvenor Road. Plans are already at an advanced stage to extend community events next summer, which will include three open-air music events. The first is already booked for Sunday June 12th, 2016, when an old favourite of many, the Peterborough Concert Band, will be performing music, old and new. In August, we shall be entertained somewhat differently, in the Motown style, by the Motor City Vipers.

I feel sure that, if you are reading this article, then you are probably well aware of our local U3A by now, and all it has to offer its members. However, if you do not, then please visit our website (just Google “whittlesey u3a”) or speak with a friend who has already joined. Our probationary period is at an end and we are now fully fledged, alongside our neighbouring U3As at Ramsey, March, Deeping, Chatteris and the like. At September’s Open Meeting, Brian Kell BEM entertained us with a fascinating insight into the revival of Whittlesey’s annual Straw Bear Festival, complete with a couple of songs! Seven new members joined that day, taking our total to over 140. Last month, Pat Wallace Pope came along to tell us about the making of tartan and kilts (details to follow). At November’s meeting, Lyn and Tony Wright will be telling folk about a charity: Tools With A Mission (TWAM), and encouraging them to turn out their unwanted tools of all descriptions for Third World countries. A small team of members has met to plan a Christmas Party, which will take the place of our monthly Open Meeting in December. I feel sure this will be an afternoon filled with fun and laughter, with no little food to consume! Late September saw the first get-together of all our Interest Groups Leaders / contact persons to compare notes, discuss ideas and best practices. U3As can only function effectively with these wonderful volunteers who step forward to get the groups up and running. Thanks
WHITTLESEY LADYSMITH W.I. Members will be taking part in the Remembrance Parade to the Memorial in Queen Street, on Sunday November 8th. Our next meeting is on Tuesday November 10th at 7.30pm, in St. Andrew’s Hall, Parkinsons Lane, when Margaret Hope will be talking about seasonal flowers and how to arrange them. The competition is for an “Old Wives’ Remedy”. New members and guests are always welcome, and more information can be found from Sue on 01733 205927.
Conservative Sunday Lunch Stewart Jackson, MP for Peterborough, was the special guest at the Whittlesey branch of North East Cambridgeshire Conservative Associations’ (NECCA) annual Sunday lunch at Whittlesey Conservative Club. Mr Jackson spoke on a range of topical issues and freely answered questions from the floor. Mrs Julie Windle, Chairman, was delighted that Mr Jackson was able to support the event and said, "The lunch raised a considerable amount towards our branch fundraising efforts for the year. Mr Jackson’s speech was very well received after an excellent lunch." to them, over twenty groups have already been able to be set up in the few months we have been formed. Millie's Charity Haircut
Next month, courageous 11-year-old Millie Cousins will be cutting her long hair, all for a wonderful charity. Millie, who has hair past the bottom of her back, is having a sponsored haircut on Thursday November 26th, during school assembly, so that she can donate it to The Little Princess Trust Charity. This wonderful charity makes real hair wigs for children that have lost their own through cancer treatment, or other illness. Each wig costs £350 to make, so Millie is also raising money too. Whittlesea | November 2015
| A word from
your Mayor Alex Miscandlon
Hello everyone. As the days get shorter and the nights close in with the weather getting colder, it’s a sure sign that Christmas is on its way. With this in mind, if you are on the lookout for presents and bargains, be aware that on December 5th, the Whittlesey Extravaganza takes place in the Market Place - so come along and support worthy causes. At the same time, you will be able to enjoy the Christmas lights. Functions for both myself, and the Mayoress, seem to be on the increase with small fund-raising events taking place all over the town. This keeps us both very busy. One of the highlights was being asked if I would present a bunch of flowers to Joyce, a resident of The Elms Nursing Home, who had reached the grand old age of 100 years recently. It was a privilege to meet her and members of her family, some who had flown over from America (see piece below). I also attend many functions in other towns, promoting Whittlesey, and this in turn brings fellow mayors and high ranking visitors to Whittlesey to my own functions, thus raising Whittlesey’s profile in their minds and becoming a place, rather than just a name on a map. This is a process that was started by the previous mayors, and I shall endeavour to continue for the benefit of Whittlesey.
A quick note... Whittlesey Town Council have available to them grant monies to the tune of £10,000 for distribution to the local community voluntary organisations, but you need to apply. The maximum for any one application is £1,000. The cut-off date for applications is January 31st, 2016. Applications need to be made in writing, headed, “Tesco Fund” via the Town Council office in Grosvenor Road. More information on this can be found on page 70.

Joyce Slater had a special visitor as she joined a very special band of people to reach 100. The Mayor of Whittlesey, Cllr. Alex Miscandlon, presented flowers on behalf of Whittlesey Town Council to Joyce, who is a resident of The Elms Residential and Nursing Home. Joyce was later joined by her family, which included grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her daughter Sue, and husband, had travelled the furthest, from the United States of America. At October’s meeting, Mark Knight, from Cambridge University Archaeology Unit, gave a most fascinating talk with slides about the dig they are doing at Mustfarm, which is at the local brickyard site. They have unearthed some wonderful artefacts, including glass beads, bronze tools, and implements and woven textiles made from plant fibres. Eight beautifully preserved prehistoric logboats have also been unearthed at an earlier dig. The dig this time will continue for the next eight
months, and members have been invited to visit the site in the next couple of months. For more information on this amazing project on our door step, visit www.mustfarm.com The next meeting is on Tuesday November 3rd at 7:30pm at St. Andrew’s Church Hall. It is the AGM, and members will be making the decorations for our entry to the “Christmas Tree Festival”. New members are welcome, contact Ginny on 01733 205148.

| Local History by Tony Austin
The year of 1850
In this new series, we follow the development of Whittlesey from The Stone Age to present day, through the eyes of ordinary families
I
t is the year 1850 and the Governors of the Town Revenues, who are responsible for the administration of the lands, buildings and other charitable bequests, have a problem. Ever since the outbreak of cholera in the town 15 years before, the state of the slum cottages, many hidden away in back yards but many also highly visible to the more respectable inhabitants, has become a source of embarrassment to the Governors principally because they own a sizeable number of them. To be fair to the Governors their role is to oversee the charities’ income and distribute it amongst the poor inhabitants. The idea of being some kind of Victorian housing association would never have occurred to them. The Workhouse was there to satisfy any possible feelings of guilt they might have otherwise experienced at the sight of ragged, starving families begging in the street. Unfortunately the Workhouse in Old Tavern Street now Broad Street, built in the 18th Century and extended more recently was full to bursting point and so as we shall see were many of the *poor cottages* occupied by the overflow. To this end an Improvement Committee was created and the newly elected Chairman Mr Waddelow took himself and the other members to inspect a row of poor cottages at The Baulk, a narrow lane between East Delph and Bassenhally Road. This is their written report: “There are five tenements occupied by the under mentioned viz 1. The tenement at the south end by John Timmons, his wife and six children aged from 6 to 16 years. 2. The next adjoining by Thomas Stevenson, his wife and eight children, three being above 16 years of age. 3. The next adjoining by James Holmes, wife and one child about 16 years of age. 4. The next adjoining by William Glithero, wife and one child about 10 years of age. 5. And the next adjoining by James Fish, wife and one child about 15 years old. Each tenement consists of one low room and a chamber above. The roof of Stevenson’s tenement viewing it from the outside appears to have fallen into the chamber, but on viewing it the Committee found the sides thereof were propped up by supports placed within 18 D I S C O V E R I N G
the chamber and between these 3 beds are placed in which 8 of the inmates sleep. That the tenement at the north end and occupied by James Fish is in the best state, he having repaired the thatch recently giving it a rather more comfortable appearance. And lastly that the Committee is of the opinion that the state of the whole is such that they are very unsafe for persons to reside in and recommend that steps are taken for their entire removal.” Seven months later the tenements were still there and steps were taken to eject the tenants and pull down the cottages forthwith. A month after The Committee resolved that the decision to pull down the cottages in consequence of their being a nuisance the whole site should be devoted to the enlargement of the lane. This gives us a telling glimpse into not only the poverty that was endemic in Whittlesey, but also the view of that poverty that prevailed amongst the more prosperous inhabitants of the time. The cottages were a viewed as a nuisance and the poor inhabitants were simply thrown out with no thought of their fate. We read much about the Clearances in Scotland at the behest of landlords who wanted to create sporting estates or turn their lands over to sheep to improve their income. Much the same morality was in evidence

The Wild Flower Campaign - a Success Earlier in the year, The Letter B landlord, Bruce Roan, and his very generous customers donated/ sponsored our 2015 “Wild Flower” initiative. This was published in “Discovering Whittlesea”. The results have been outstanding; our planting of several tens of thousands of seeds was somewhat delayed and, with the unseasonal summer, the flowering came much later than expected. However, from mid-June all the way through until writing this article, the colours and spread have been fantastic. We had three beds of around 5x2 metres ground-work at the Bower end of the Manor Field. These wild flower seeds have been obtained from a sustainable source and encourage bees and many aphids. Such is the success, that it is hoped that a
similar project can be undertaken next year. If you think you can identify an area, please let us know and we will look into it. Our litter picking and rubbish clearing is neverending, and is a somewhat thankless task, but our dedicated group of volunteers carry on regardless. Until some more pro-active enforcement takes place, the “litter bugs” will also carry on their dirty deeds. The rest of our group and I hope that Fenland Council continues to support all the Street Pride groups throughout Fenland; there are around fifteen groups, all doing their bit for the community. You can find our future events at https:// whittleseastreetpride.wordpress.com or just ‘Google’ Whittlesea Street Pride.

The Final Big Switch-On The Christmas lights in Arnold's Lane, Whittlesey, will be switched on at 5pm on Saturday November 28th, with the Alderman Jacobs School Choir singing carols and songs from 4.30pm. Over twenty years ago, Gina and John Ferridge started to decorate their house with lights, in memory of their son Nicholas, who died from leukaemia when he was eight years old. Through the generosity of the people of Whittlesey, donations received for their charity, 'Children with Cancer UK', so far stand at £28,600. Their goal is to achieve £30,000 in their final switch-on year. Age and ill health has made them take the decision to make this the final switch-on, and hope on the night that your support can help them achieve their goal.
Father Christmas and Rudolph will certainly be there to support them, along with cast members from The Key Theatre's pantomime, Aladdin. One thing you can be assured of is that, on the night, there should be snow in Arnold's Lane.

Solar Panels time to fit them
‌NOW
Thinking of installing solar panels on your property? Take a look to find out why now could be financially the very best time to do it. Thousands of homeowners across the country have installed solar panels over the last few years, saving money on their energy bills, protecting themselves from future price rises and, best of all, getting paid by the government for the electricity they generate. This has made solar energy a sound investment and given homeowners a healthy return. However, recent announcements made by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) strongly suggest that Feed-in Tariff (FiT) payments are to see drastic cuts in 2016. In fact, the Feed-in Tariff review document, published on August 27th by the DECC, laid out plans to cut the Feed-in Tariff for small scale solar PV installations by as much as 87%. Although the plans have not yet been confirmed, it is likely that all bands of the tariff will be affected quite severely. However, it is the installations in the 0-10kW band (almost all domestic installations) that will be hardest hit. In addition, a review of the default degression (applied to all tariffs) is expected to reduce the Feed-in Tariff to zero, for installations under 10kw, by 2019.
22
D I S C O V E R I N G
If you are considering installing a solar PV system, our advice is to ACT NOW, or risk a significant reduction in the pay back your system generates. All systems installed prior to the cut-off date of 31st December will receive the Feed-in Tariff currently shown on the Ofgem website, which is up to 12.47 pence per kWh. After January 1st 2016, it could be as low as 1.63 pence per kWh! Princeenergy is a registered MCS installer, and can offer advice on all aspects of solar installations, from products and the suitability of your property to potential paybacks and government schemes. As a trading division of Princebuild, a family-run business that has been trading for over forty years, you can be safe in the knowledge that Princeenergy will be here to provide support and servicing through the life of your solar panels and beyond.

Whittlesey Festival Schools Art Competition The Whittlesey Festival, held this year on Sunday September 6th, was once again a resounding success with thousands of people enjoying the variety of activities and displays on offer throughout the day. One of the regular highlights of the Festival is the Schools Art Exhibition, and this year was no exception. Students and children from local schools, Park Lane, Alderman Jacobs, New Road, and Sir Harry Smith Community College, had their work on display at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street for visitors, family and friends to enjoy. Marija Lysak, who organised the competition on behalf of the Festival, said, “Having the schools involved is such an exciting and important aspect of the Festival. It’s a fantastic opportunity for others to appreciate the creative talents of the young people we have in the community. There was such an interesting variety of themes and techniques used, and many of those who entered had worked really hard.” Comments from visitors included, “Wow - what a lot of talent we have in Whittlesey, fantastic display, loved the diversity of styles, great to see each school represented. Well done!”; “Thought provoking, makes you really look”. Needless to say, the judges had a challenging time deciding on the winners as the standard was absolutely superb. Prizes were awarded by the Mayor of Whittlesey, Cllr. Alex Miscandlon, on the day. The winners were as follows:

All was safely gathered in… New Road Primary School celebrated Harvest with a whole school assembly, with each class playing an important part with songs, poems and prayers. Rev. Nigel from St. Mary’s Church, reminded us all of the importance of saying “Thank you”, and how good that can make people feel. The song, “Harvest Rock and Roll”,

got our hands clapping and feet tapping. Following our successful MacMillan Coffee Afternoon in September, when we raised £205, our children and staff generously contributed to the Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid Project, with tins and packets of food creating a colourful Harvest display. Pastor Brian, from Whittlesey Christian Church, also joined us for our assembly and was able to take our gifts away to be used as needed.

INTERESTING FACTS TO PONDER PRIOR TO CHRISTMAS Did you know that far from being irrelevant or boring, the Bible contains revolutionary information and extremely wise guidance? People are often surprised when I tell them, that many things we take for granted today actually trace their roots back to information found in the Bible. Here are just three: The Bible Has Often Opened The Door For Scientific Discovery In the mid-700s BC the Bible clearly stated (Isaiah 40 v 22) that ‘God sits on the circle (sphere) of the earth’. Prior to Aristotle suggesting in his book, ‘On The Heavens’, that the earth might be a sphere, or round, science had believed that the earth was flat, and if you went beyond the horizon you would disappear into nothingness. It took Christopher Columbus, inspired by the Bible, to sail around the world and prove it was indeed round ... as the Bible had stated. The Earth Hangs On Nothing It seems hard to believe that scientists did not discover that the earth sat on nothing until around 1650. Prior to this, it was accepted that the earth sat on the back of a large animal or giant. Yet around 1500BC a man called Job wrote, “He, (God) hangs the earth on nothing” (Job 26: v7;) In more recent years many scientists have begun to accept that some of the things we see are actually composed of things we cannot see – the invisible ‘atom’, for example. Two thousand years ago, God Word stated, “the things you are actually looking at have not always been made from those things you can readily see” (Hebrews 11: v3).
The Bible And Oceanography Matthew Maury (1806-1873), considered by many to be the father of oceanography, happened one day, to be reading Psalm 8: v8; – “and all that moves along the paths of the ocean”. Contrary to popular belief at the time, this verse challenged him to publicly state, ‘if there are paths in the sea then I am determined to find them’. The world now freely accepts the factual presence of the cold and warm continental currents. Maury’s book on oceanography remains the basic text for this subject and is still used by many universities. In 2016, we are considering holding a course which will look as these and other facts to help you consider the relevance of God to your life. To register your initial interest in this, simply send us your e-mail address or telephone number and we’ll forward you details nearer the time.

| Policing your area by Ben Di-Meo, Local Whittlesey Police Sergeant This is my first article for “Discovering Whittlesea”, taking over from Sergeant Paul Harris, who served the local community for over three years. I realise Paul is a tough act to follow, but I will do my very best to achieve this for Whittlesey. I would like to take this opportunity to bid a sad farewell to both Paul Harris and Sam Dyer, and wish them both every success for the future in their new roles. Paul has moved to a new role within Cambridgeshire Constabulary. Sam has re-located to a new area to pursue an exciting new career. On behalf of everyone at Whittlesey, we wish both all the very best in their respective new endeavours. A brief introduction about me... I have been a serving police officer for nineteen years, working mainly across Fenland, Peterborough and Huntingdon areas. I have had a wide variety of roles ranging from uniform response, to plain clothes investigation. I took over this new role on September 1st, and I’m looking forward to working in an expanding and developing part of the area. The area we police covers from the Dog and Doublet Bridge to Pondersbridge, encompassing the villages of Eastrea, Coates, Turves,
26
D I S C O V E R I N G
Benwick, Wimblington and Doddington. Within this area there are local communities, schools, businesses and care homes. Although we do get deployed around the district, you can contact the local officers via our Facebook and Twitter accounts; popping into the Whittlesey station on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 9am to 5pm; the Cambridgeshire Police website; write directly to the local team; and for non-emergency, call 101. This does help officers understand issues and concerns from residents which affect their areas and communities. We cover eight schools within our area, and we will be outside these schools patrolling either in the morning or afternoon, which is not an easy task. Please stop and have a chat with us, it’s not just enforcement, but a chance to engage and speak to people informally. However, officers will enforce any offences, and will try and educate people. Tickets are usually a last resort. We are also working closely with schools to try and deal with all the concerns associated with this particular issue, and try and develop student groups to express their views and also to break down barriers and misconceptions.

November is the month of Remembrance. In our civic lives, this will be on Remembrance Day and Armistice Day. This year, in particular, we focus on the 70th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Our involvement in the nation’s events is detailed below. Remembrance is also a personal matter. The church has, throughout its history, set aside November as a particular month to remember those of our families and friends who have died. We of course remember them throughout the year and on anniversaries. This month is a time for special services. Services that invite us to come together with other people to support each other in our grief and thanksgiving. Our various Christian communities in town and district will do this in different ways, and at various times. Our Service for the Bereaved will take place at St. Andrew’s Church on Sunday November 1st at 3.00pm. All are welcome. We have had wind and rain, along with the first frosts of the year, so that can only mean one thing to anglers... get out the pike and zander tackle, and head for the fenland drains. In early November, Whittlesey host the prestigious Angling Times/Angling Trust British Pike Championship. Locals have a very good record in this event, and I am sure will be hoping the fish are on the feed. Glassmoor Bank is expected to be included in the fenland drains to be used for this big event, and already it’s showing some good form with a few pike being taken to dead baits. However, one of the best fish to be taken recently was a 10lb zander caught by Stewart. There was a time that zander were not very well thought of outside of the predator anglers’ clubs and organisations, but these days they are a much sought-after species,
D I S C O V E R I N G
Gavin Stewart’s zander so hopes are high that a few more of the big fish will be taken in the coming months. It’s at this time of the year that Whittlesey Dyke starts to show its winter form; the tiny venue at the back of Whittlesey can be full of small fish throughout the year, but in particular from November right through until the end of the season, in March. Bread punch fishing always works well if the drain is clear, while those fishing a groundbait and pinkie approach will score best in coloured water. If you are in a quandary as to where to fish when you get up through the winter months, this is the one venue that you can always rely on for bites, no matter what the weather. For those that still prefer to fish stillwaters, you should already be using much lighter tackle, and by that I mean lighter lines and smaller hooks. Maggot and caster will be the main bait, but make sure you always have a tin or two of sweetcorn - it’s the stand-out bait when all else fails on the feeder, pole or straight lead.

| Spotlight on clubs
Whittlesey ABC needs you!
There aren’t many groups and clubs left in Whittlesey that cater for children, but Whittlesey ABC certainly does. The boxing club, found at Unit 32 Aaron Road Industrial Estate, is open to adults and children who have an interest in the sport of boxing, or just want to keep fit in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We spoke to committee member, Leann Boscarini, about why it needs your help. Step into the gym at Aaron Road Industrial Estate, and you might just be surprised. Men, women and youngsters will greet you with a smile as they learn how to box and keep fit. Open on Monday (7:30pm to 9pm), and Saturday mornings, the club holds special sessions for juniors on a Monday and Friday between 6:15pm and 7:15pm. There’s also a circuit training session on a Wednesday at 8:30pm for an hour. Membership is very reasonable, at only £5 for adults and £3 for a child per session, or £30 (adult) and £20 (child over 11 years) for a monthly pass. Boxing might not be for everyone but, with the closure of many youth groups, Whittlesey ABC are providing a safe environment for our youngsters. However, this non-profit organisation is reliant on its members, and donations from loyal businesses, to keep afloat. The group, which is awaiting charity status next year, is holding its first boxing show next month, on December 5th, and they are looking for as many sponsors as possible to help fund the evening, and secure the club’s future.
for free, giving back to the community and to a sport that they love. But the running cost of keeping the club open mounts up, and equipment is constantly needing to be replaced. Whittlesey ABC are offering its sponsors a great package in return for their help. Think that could be you? Please get in touch with Leann if you think you could sponsor the club, by calling 07799 155053. Leann added, “I’d like to thank our current sponsors: EPD Whittlesey, Unity and Childers, for their help with kit and equipment, and to our trainers: Darren Fairbrass, Mark Hurst, Jamie Grant and Fred Smith. Without them, our club simply couldn’t keep going.” Whittlesey ABC’s first show is on December 5th at the Manor Leisure Centre. Tickets are £15 and will be available on the night, or through Leann on 07799 155053. The evening will consist of junior and senior bouts, with the first bout starting at 7:30pm. Please show your support for this fantastic local group.
All of the trainers at the club offer their time
Whittlesey Extravaganza Committee
The date is set, the acts are booked, and all we need now is YOU!!! The Christmas Extravaganza will be on Friday December 11th on Whittlesey Market Square from 5pm to 8pm. Father Christmas is booked, as are the elves and fairies to decorate his grotto. Punch and Judy are booked; the balloon modeller is practising, as are the Cambridgeshire Caledonian Pipe band. 20Twenty are bringing their theatre group and Whittlesey Fire Service is bringing the Fire Engine. There will be the usual Charity stalls raising funds for their special group. Whittlesey Lions are already working on the Children’s window competition. It all needs to be perfect. 32
D I S C O V E R I N G
We are hoping that many local businesses will stay open whilst the Extravaganza is in progress, giving all of you an extra chance to search for those all important Christmas presents. Some businesses will be waiting with mince pies and a little glass of something festive for their visitors. All the festivities will draw to a close with carol singing supported by the Salvation Army band and local singing groups. Whilst our name has changed, our Committee is made up of an assortment of volunteers, some from Lions, Straw Bear, Tangent, and others just keen to help. Enquiries to Roger Brown, tel: 01733 202884.

Winter Warmer
My favourite time of year, and a good excuse to start using the slow cooker. This recipe uses shin of beef, which to me is the best cut for any casserole. However, lean stewing steak or chuck also work very well.
Method:
Ingredients • 750g beef shin or good quality stewing steak • 40g beef dripping or vegetable oil • 1 tbsp plain flour • 1 tsp of mustard powder Simon Norris, • 4 small onions, peeled and diced J Jones Butchers • 900ml water • 1 beef stock cube • 4 carrots, peeled and cut into 4 chunks • 2 swedes, peeled and cubed • 2 sticks of celery, diced finely • 3 bay leaves • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the herby dumplings • 125g self-raising flour • 60g shredded suet • 1 tsp of baking powder • 1 tbsp of dried mixed herbs • A good pinch of sea salt and freshly ground black or white pepper
34
D I S C O V E R I N G
1. Cut the meat into neat cubes. Spoon the flour and mustard powder into a bowl and drop in the meat, coating it with the seasoning. 2. Heat the dripping or oil in a pan. Brown the beef, then add the onions until both take on a good colour. Season with salt and pepper and stir in the tbsp of plain flour. Combine the stock cube with the water, add to the pan and bring to the boil. Season again to taste, cover and gently simmer for 20 minutes. Add the carrots, celery, swedes and bay leaves and simmer for a further 20 minutes. 3. Transfer this to the slow cooker on a high setting, and continue to cook for 4 hours. 4. Meanwhile, sieve the flour and baking powder for the dumplings into a bowl, and add the suet, salt, pepper and mixed herbs. Slowly add 3 tbsp water to the mix to create a soft, but not sticky dough. If you overdo it, add a bit more flour to even things out. 5. Lightly flour your hands and roll the dough into eight small balls. With one hour left to go, drop them carefully into the slow cooker, cover and cook for the remaining one hour. Your dumplings should be plump and moist, but definitely cooked all the way through.

Hello, I’m Steering Committee Chair of the newly formed Whittlesey and District Business Forum. Can I firstly pay tribute to the previous Business Forum, who carried the flag for the town for many years in the past? Our aim is to promote the town, its traders and businesses to as wide a market as possible. Hopefully, you will agree that in the past months, the town has never looked better. Many thanks here to the volunteers of Street Pride and “Whittlesey in Bloom”. Also to the Parks Department at Fenland. As you will know, a lot of new housing is coming to town in the next few years. This actually gives everyone an opportunity to become engaged and push the various authorities to improve and expand the facilities in the area to meet the expected demand. Although the Forum is mainly business and trade-based, it is open to all who have an interest in the future of the town. We have had several open meetings with speakers. Firstly, Richard Hunt of Benn Lock and Safe, giving first rate advice on security matters at work and in the home. David Combes of Lawgistics attended the last meeting to give guidance on the new Consumer Rights Act 2015, which came in with major changes on October 1st. Who knew?! Both Richard and David are not local, but have moved to Whittlesey and love it. In fact, a lot of David’s extended family now live in the area. We are looking into having a website for the town where all businesses could be represented on a single point of contact. This is only available now, set amongst the other town, within the Fenland District Website. Our next open meeting will be on November 18th at 6pm at Grosvenor House (the white painted building) Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey. The AGM has been set for January 20th, 2016, at Grosvenor House, when membership details, charges and a permanent team will be appointed. By the way, we are looking for a secretary, unpaid I’m afraid... any volunteers? Whittlesey is our town, so why not help it to continue to prosper? You will be very welcome. Many thanks, Steve Hodson. 01733 203064 info@hodsonscharteredsurveyors.com

Coates Primary School and the local community leap into action! Coates Primary School has been awarded a £10,000 “Awards for All” grant from the Big Lottery to develop a vibrant community wildlife and outdoor area in their school’s grounds. They will be working with the amphibian and reptile conservation charity, Froglife, to complete the works. These will include a wildlife pond, complete with dipping platform; homes for wildlife; a log circle and a seating area for study for the local school and preschool children; together with a quiet area for the Silver Lining Club and other visitors to sit and enjoy the space. Head teacher, Mrs Lindsey Boucher, said, “We’re hugely grateful to the Big Lottery for awarding us this grant so that we can create this community resource. Our school wildlife area is an important part of our school site. Over recent years this area, although rich in wildlife, has become overgrown in places and needs redesigning to meet the needs of everyone.” Following a consultation, the children, parents and staff agreed with the idea of creating a wildlife area that everyone could enjoy. They
thought that, if people in the community were involved in re-creating the area, they would feel proud and enjoy this environmental location. “Coates wildlife in action” was developed to enhance the valuable habitats for wildlife, and raising awareness among the school and local community about amphibians, reptiles, and conservation efforts to protect them. Froglife will be delivering the year-long project through their Leapfrog Schools Programme, which offer schools a range of accessible and inclusive options to help them learn more about amphibians and reptiles. The project started last month with members of the school, parents, Governors and local Rotary Club all working with Froglife to start clearing the existing site, ready for the re-design to start taking shape. Froglife’s Ecologist, Katie Rowberry, said, “We are delighted to be working with Coates School on this project, and have been impressed by their enthusiasm and commitment.” If anyone from the local community would like to be involved in this project please contact, Marion Seaton, School Business Manager at Coates Primary School. You can find out more about Froglife’s Leapfrog Schools project on their website www.froglife. org/leapfrog-schools/

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better.
Sitting Properly
This month we explore the surprising topic of sitting on the toilet. Straining on the toilet influences the likelihood of developing a range of bowel problems particularly diverticulosis and haemorrhoids. The conclusions of this article are surprising and informative. The article references a book we highly recommend tilted Gut – the inside story of our body’s most under-rated organ by Guidia Enders ISBN 978-1-922247-96-4. An Israeli doctor devised an experiment to determine which method, squatting or sitting, required the minimum amount of straining. He asked 28 test subjects to do their daily business in 3 positions, squatting, half squatting on a lower toilet and a full squat into a hole. He recorded the time it took the subjects in each position and asked them to assess the degree of straining they required to pass their bowel movement. The results were clear; in the full squat position the subjects took an average of 50seconds, report minimum straining and a feeling of complete bowel emptying. In the seated position the subjects took an average of 130seconds, strained more and were less satisfied with the end feeling. We may ask the question, why? Well, the Guidia Enders explains this in the extract below: “The closure mechanism of our gut is not designed in such a way that it can open the hatch completely when we are seated. There is a muscle that encircles the gut like a lasso when we are sitting or, indeed, standing, and pulls it in one direction creating a kink in the tube. It means our faeces hit a corner. Just like a car on the highway (motorway for us British!), turning a corner means it has to put on the brakes. So when we are sitting or standing, our sphincters have to expend much less energy keeping everything in. If the lasso muscle relaxes, the kink straightens. The road ahead is straight, and the faeces are free to ‘step on the gas’.” As humans have been evolving for the millions of years and seated toilets were only invented in 1592, it is no surprise that our anatomy favours squatting. A modern day solution to combine the benefits of a seated toilet with the preferential squat position is to simply put our feet on a small stool/block whilst seated on the toilet (see adjacent diagram). This will reduce your straining and as such reduce the risk of any bowel problems in the future. We shall leave you with one rather pointent extract from Guidia Enders book: “It remains a fact that the 1.2 billion people in this world who squat have almost no incidence of diverticulosis and far few problems with haemorrhoids. We in the West, on the other hand, squeeze our gut tissue till it comes out of our bottoms and we have to have it removed by a doctor. Diabetes in our Pets
Just like people, our pet cats and dogs can develop diabetes. Although it cannot be cured, diabetes can be managed, and pets can continue to live fairly normal lives. Diabetes in dogs Knowing the signs of diabetes can help with early diagnosis. Signs you can look out for are: • Drinks more than usual • Urinates more frequently, you may notice that they have ‘’accidents’’ in the house • They seem to be hungry all the time, but seem to be losing weight • You may notice they have cloudy eyes
Your vet will ask for these signs and carry out a general health check to help with a diagnosis. The vet may ask for a sample of urine so it can be tested to help diagnose diabetes. Diabetes can develop in any dog, but frequently effects unspayed females, or middle-aged to older dogs.

Diabetes in cats
Diabetes is one of many diseases that can affect your cat, and they may show visible changes in behaviour. It’s important that a thorough check is carried out by your veterinary surgeon. Signs include: • Drinking more • Urinating in the house, urinating more frequently • Always hungry but losing weight • Less active, sleeping more often than usual • Thinning, dry, or dull fur Cats of all ages, sexes and breeds can develop diabetes, but it more frequently affects older cats and usually neutered males. The diagnosis of diabetes is generally fairly simple. The presence of a high blood sugar level (hyperglycaemia) and sugar in the urine (glycosuria), along with the appropriate clinical signs, confirms the diagnosis. In dogs, normal blood sugar levels are 2 to 6.3, but I have seen diabetic patients with values as high as 40. The symptoms listed could be indicators of other diseases. If you think your pet is showing any of these symptoms, it’s best to inform your vet, who will then be able to examine your pet and proceed with any necessary tests or treatments.

Some plans pay out a lump sum on diagnosis of a critical illness, some in the event of death, and other plans provide a regular income rather than a lump sum. Whittlesey In Bloom
Thank you to Natasha, who received the press release from “Anglia in Bloom” to enable her to get the results into the October edition of “DW”. The press release was embargoed until September 17th, the day of the presentations and the actual date that the October edition went to print. So rather than you having to wait a whole month, she managed – without anyone else knowing – to insert the results within the document. Copies of the certificates received have been posted at various points in town; in particular at the Cemetery and The Pound - both projects winning Silver Gilt awards. As a whole project, the town also won a Silver Gilt award. Certificates were awarded to the Lattersey Nature Reserve in the Biodiversity category, the Garden of Rest in the Best Community Project, and The Pound for the Best Floral Display by an individual or community. We are justifiably proud of all the awards received for 2015. We held a meeting on September 29th, to discuss the results and consider what to do and how to make further improvements next year. If you have any suggestions and/or ideas, please get in touch (details below). We know that we need more hands to help, so few of us are trying to keep the show on the road, so once again I put out a plea – if you would like to
join us, the next meeting will be held on Tuesday November 3rd at 6.30pm at Grosvenor House (the Town Council Offices), opposite the new bus stop. You will be made very welcome. As you know, The Pound is open on a daily basis between the hours of 10am and 4pm. We have agreed that it will be closed from Monday December 14th 2015, through to Monday February 1st 2016, when it will re-open again for your enjoyment. There is always work to be done, and we hope to carry on with your help and suggestions to enhance our town. Once again, on behalf of the dedicated “Whittlesey in Bloom” and “Friends of the Cemetery” team of volunteers - thank you for your support. If you would like to help our town/environment and make new like-minded friends, please get in touch. Everyone is welcome! Dalek invasion of Park Lane School Whilst many of us last month were looking at the moon and how close it was to the earth, this was really a smokescreen to allow an invasion of Whittlesey.... Park Lane School was visited by an alien from a galaxy far away. Following a competition held at the Whittlesey Festival, six students won the prize of a Dalek visit to the school - and they were not disappointed! As they were well-behaved, the Dalek posed for photographs before flying back to Skaro. Robert Windle, Festival Committee member and spokesman for extra-terrestial beings, said, "The Dalek, although usually very busy invading planets, was delighted to honour a promise it made to the Festival organisers in September 54

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Mark Sherwood feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have
struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Whittlesey, Eastrea & Coates areas and Mark is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal
satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much
a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Mark a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Accountants hit the back of the net by sponsoring football team
Peterborough and Whittlesey-based chartered certified accountants, GreenStones, have sponsored Whittlesey Blues Under 12s football team. The Whittlesey Junior football team, based at the “Field of Dreams”, Stonald Road, will play the whole season with the GreenStones logo emblazoned on the front of their shirts. Simon Chaplin, Managing Director of GreenStones, presented the new kit to the team at their first home match of the season. The team went on to win the match 5-0, so now they want Simon to go every week! Tim Knighton, manager of Whittlesey Blues U12s said: “The management team and players would like to take this opportunity to thank all those at GreenStones for their great support this season, and hopefully the team will do them proud with a strong challenge in the league.” Simon Chaplin added: “We are always keen to help out local sports clubs, so we were delighted to help out Whittlesey Blues U12s this season. With our new office opening in Queen Street, Whittlesey, it gives us a local presence and we always look to support the local community when we can. We wish them well for the rest of the season.”
Friends of the Cemetery Friends of the Cemetery are part of the Whittlesey In Bloom Team. As you are probably all aware now, Whittlesey received a Silver Gilt from the Anglia In Bloom Competition. We were also delighted that Whittlesey Cemetery received a Silver Gilt award. Over the last twelve months, the Friends of the Cemetery have carried out general maintenance to the Cemetery. We have also cleared and repositioned many of the graves in Section ‘D’. Much of the work carried out would not have been possible without the very kind donation by P J Thory Limited, of all the top soil and gravel. I would like to extend our thanks and gratitude for their kindness. We do try and raise funds to carry out the work and to buy the tools required, but large items such as soil and gravel are very expensive. We are continuing our work, and hopefully will do as well or even better in next year’s competition. Pauline Edge (Friends of Whittlesey Cemetery)
Volunteers in Whittlesey urgently needed! Cam Sight is based in Chatteris and Cambridge and offers advice, information and practical support to children, young people and adults with a visual impairment. We provide a volunteer befriending service which helps people with vision loss to develop confidence to interact more fully within the environment and to increase community participation. We are very fortunate to have support from a small number of wonderful volunteers and without them we would be unable to provide our services. However, need is still great as we know many people in our community who are lonely and would enjoy a regular visit. Are you buying a house jointly with someone else? “Tenants in Common”
It is essential that you should give some thought to what will happen in the future, whether you are buying as a married couple or as partners. Whatever your own individual circumstances you will need to consider what may happen when your present relationship ends whether by death, separation, divorce or other cause. If you are buying property jointly there are two types of ownership you should consider:“Beneficial Joint Tenants” Means that you will own the property in equal shares, and that on death of either of you, the property will become the sole property of the survivor. This is the usual basis for those buying as husband and wife and especially as first time marriages.
If you buy on this basis it means that you own the property in specified shares (which may well still be equally). In the event of the death of a joint owner the share of that partner will not transfer to the other partner automatically and instead forms part of that partner’s estate and will be dealt with by his or her will. Married and unmarried couples should also think about how much of the deposit each partner is putting up for the purchase and how best to preserve this if a break-up were to occur. The courts have considerable discretion when making decisions over houses within divorce proceedings and take into consideration child welfare. If you have any doubts as to your own position please ask our conveyancing team for advice. The right advice now can help to avoid problems in the future.

Music industry workshop at Sir Harry Smith On Friday September 18th, students at Sir Harry Smith Community College took part in an exciting music industry workshop, run by “Industry Education in Music”. Students from years nine and ten took part in a whole day workshop, lead by industry specialist, Sam Robson, and singer songwriter, Connor Adams. During the morning, students were coached on how to create their own pop songs in groups. They then had to perform these to their peers. In the afternoon, students were given a careers talk about the music industry and listened to a fantastic performance by singer-songwriter, Connor Adams. The workshop provided a great day for all students involved. It gave them experience in
KING'S DYKE CROSSING
On local social media there have recently been several comments questioning whether or not the King’s Dyke railway crossing will go ahead. There is no more important project for Whittlesey residents than the crossing, so it’s important to keep people informed about progress. Following the selection of the southern alternative, (the longer of the three proposed routes), officers at Cambridgeshire County Council have been working on details of the scheme and the draft framework contract to get it designed and built. The scheme’s key dates currently are as follows: Late November 2015 – submission of application for detailed planning permission. February 2016 – detailed design work following determination of planning application. Summer 2016 – start of construction. Summer 2017 – opening of crossing to traffic. This timetable is, of course, not guaranteed. There could be planning permission issues. Funding changes may happen. Land acquisition may be delayed. On-site works may uncover unexpected problems. Ralph Butcher, County Councillor for Whittlesey South and a member of the County Council’s Highways and Community Infrastructure Committee, continues to keep very close tabs on this project. As it stands at the moment, we’re hopeful that we’ll see vehicles crossing the new bridge less than two years from now.
writing their own music and introduced them to careers in music which had probably not considered before. The compositions that students produced were of a really high quality and students will continue working on these over the next few weeks. They will then perform them to their parents at a celebration evening before half-term. Comments from students following the workshop have been really positive: “I really enjoyed the workshop, it was the best day”; “I hope the school can offer more workshops like this in the future”; “I feel like my confidence in performing and composing had improved”. Future stars in the making, perhaps?
Charity Auction in aid of Sue Ryder Ever fancied visiting an auction? Why not pop along on November 28th, and help out a great cause at the same time? The charity auction event is a collaboration between local award winning auctioneers, Buttercross Auctions and the Rotary Club of Whittlesey, with the aim of raising funds for the new Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. Items already received for sale include good quality period and modern furniture, militaria including medals, jewellery, vintage metalware, china and glassware, plus rustic items and bygones. The sale will run on the lines of previous successful and well supported sales, though with a donation being made to Sue Ryder from the Buttercross commission charges (15% of the hammer price).
If anyone wishes to enter items into the auction, they should contact Laurence Seaton on 07713 081526 or by e-mail on laurenceseaton@hotmail.co.uk

Roy Gerstner
2) WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY? My mother (“A boys best friend is his mother”), for the simple fact that she overcome the social discrimination after after World War Two, whilst mastering the English language to a very high standard, and her communication and business skills.
Roy is a retired communications and electronics engineer. Serving in the Merchant Navy for around 28 years, he travelled over ‘A Million Nautical Miles’ and went to over one hundred countries. Since retiring, Roy has been, and still is, involved in many volunteer community groups: Street Pride, Neighbourhood Watch, Friends of Whittlesey Library, and New Queen St. Patients’ Group, to name just a few. He enjoys collecting litter and gets a lot of satisfaction from making areas tidy and clean. Roy was, until recently, an Independent Town Councillor. 1) WHERE WERE YOU BORN, AND WHAT IS YOUR FONDEST MEMORY OF YOUR CHILDHOOD? I was born at The Gables in Peterborough in 1951 and brought up in Coates, Eastrea and Whittlesey. My favourite memory as a child was being taken on the train and Cross-Channel ferry, all the way to Vienna (where my mother originated); also playing outdoors all day until we were hungry, only then going home; and learning to play the piano accordion to a high standard. 68

3) WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? Nelson Mandela - a man for whom I have the utmost respect, to walk tall and hold his head high after being so badly treated for so long. But I would not enjoy a meal with Tony Blair! 4) HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS? Reliable, honest, positive, a planner, and sociable. 5) IF THERE WAS ONE THING WHICH YOU COULD CHANGE ABOUT WHITTLESEY, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? Put a smile on everyone’s face; life has become so serious – people don’t have time to chill out properly, share a joke and smile when meeting someone. 6) WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A 16 YEAR OLD YOU? Never give up – (Headmaster N. Burgess). If you have an ambition, realise it, however long it takes. Save ten per cent of what you earn – you will be a wealthy person by the time you reach fifty. Not many do this…
