Coles Barbers – Celebrating 60 Years

I’d like to begin with an apology for an error printed in the introduction of the May issue. While meaning to describe the Whittlesey Festival as an event which ‘never fails to impress’ or ‘never disappoints’, I mistakenly muddled my words to give the opposite impression; this was a genuine mistake, for which I offer my sincere apologies to the Whittlesey Festival Committee and Town Council, both of whom work tirelessly each year to put on what is a truly fantastic event.

On the subject of hard-working volunteers, I was recently invited to a meeting of the Whittlesey Rotary Club, where I learnt about the fascinating work they do to support various local causes - you can read more about them in the Club Spotlight feature. I’m also pleased to welcome Jen Barback, Curator of Whittlesey Museum, to our History slot, and you can find out more about her as she answers this month’s Hot Seat questions.

Jack It’s been a busy few weeks in Whittlesey, and the summer ahead promises to be just as exciting. July offers numerous events to keep you entertained, including the annual Coates Village Show, and various fetes and fundraisers to support local causes. A Cut Above The Rest for There aren’t many local business owners who can say they’ve served five generations of pride that Ken customers, but as Cole’s barbers celebrates realises he has cut its sixtieth year in business, owner Ken is one the hair of five of the few. It is with much

The business was started by Ken’s father Les in 1956, when he opened a shop in Syers Lane, at that time just a small side street. Les’s career began at Ted Anthony’s shop in Whitmore Street. Following Ted’s death when Les was only fifteen, at the request of Mrs. Anthony, he continued the business until joining the forces at eighteen. As the Syers Lane shop became busier, Les employed Geoff Wright and later Pender Sutton. Ken began working part-time in 1966, at the age of just twelve,

and in 1970 the business took over the shop of Len Templeman in Market Street. Geoff and Pender later went their own separate ways, and Les and Ken were joined by Les’s second son David, better known as Butch. They worked together in Market Street for twenty-one years, before moving to their present shop in Queen Street in 1991. Les retired the following year, and Ken and Butch were later joined by Jason, who would stay for ten years. When Butch went his own way in 2002, Ken

60 Years was joined by Alan and later Wayne. Matt joined after Jason decided to move on, and the current team of five was completed with the arrival of Brady this year. It is with much pride that Ken realises he has cut the hair of five generations of customers, as did Les before him. He has many good memories of his years in the shop, and some of the families he has served over the years – from great-grandads to greatgrandsons – have become more like friends than customers. “I am hoping to keep the business going for many years yet, and would like to take this opportunity to thank all customers, past and present, for their loyal support over the years.”

• Pre-heat the oven to 180°C/Gas Mark 4.

• In a mixing bowl combine the basil, salt, pepper, garlic, thyme and butter. • Spread the butter mix on the chicken, then lay three slices of ham overlapping on a work surface. • Place the chicken breast on top and sprinkle with grated cheese. Wrap the ham over the top of the chicken. • Secure with a wooden skewer if necessary. • Repeat for the remaining three chicken breasts. • Bake in the oven for 40 minutes.

| A word from... Your Mayor Alex Miscandlon Hello everybody, it seems like only yesterday that it was January 1st, but to bring you up-to-date, we are now halfway through the year. The organising of fetes and summer events is very advanced for many organisations, as the invitations to attend these events are filtering through.

In the early days of June, the Tour of Cambridgeshire cycle race took place, and at the time of writing this article, the weather forecast looks good. Let’s hope, for the sake of all the participants, that it stays that way!

Whittlesey Town Council for the benefit of Whittlesey people, and there are two more concerts scheduled for later in the year. Details can be found on the WTC website, and at the Council offices.

One event that unfortunately failed to take place was the parachute jump by Prity, of Cedar Court. Due to the wet and windy weather, and the fact that she might have finished up in Stamford, this jump will be re-scheduled. I will keep you informed of any progress.

Councillor Mrs Mayor and I had a meeting with officers from FDC, regarding a number of recent complaints about grass-cutting and street cleaning. They took away from the meeting our thoughts, and hopefully by working as a team, CCC, FDC and WTC can find a solution.

I had the pleasure of presenting cheques for my chosen charities for this year, which were The East Anglian Air Ambulance and The Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid, who each received £900. On June 12th, the first of the free Market Place music concerts will have taken place. This is sponsored by

Coates Village Show 2016 Summer is fast approaching, and the Coates Village Show Committee are looking forward to another successful day with something for everyone, of any age! The Coates Village Show is an annual occasion which has two main events: the Show Competition, where entrants can put forward a range of produce and crafts to be judged against other entries, with the ultimate goal of being crowned ‘Overall Winner’; and a fun afternoon with lots of exciting activities for all the family. Similar to previous years, the competition will have categories for Vegetables, Fruit and Salad, Flowers and Plants, Cookery, Photography, Handicraft and Farming, as well as a range of categories, specifically for children. Entry to the competition is open to everyone living in the Team Parish area - Whittlesey, Pondersbridge, Eastrea, Coates, Turves and surrounding farms and smallholdings, as well as any students that go to the schools in this area, no matter where they live. Schedules and entry forms will be available from early June, in local shops and pubs at a price of 50p, or can be downloaded for free from our website foht.wpcteam.org.uk. In the afternoon, starting at 1.00pm, there will be a range of activities in the grounds of Holy Trinity, including a sweet tombola, raffles, and a range of stalls and games offering chances to win and buy! Of course, there will also be your chance to see the produce and crafts entries for the Show. The 2016 Coates Village Show will be on July 16th, at Holy Trinity, Coates. The closing date for entries is 12.00 noon on Thursday July 14th.

Song and Dance

at the Whittlesey Festival Excitement is building as plans for the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday September 11th gather momentum. This month, we take a look at the amazing variety of song and dance acts taking part on the day. If you love swinging jazz tunes, then the Rug-Cutters Lindyhop is definitely for you. This is the original fun and heart-pumping form of Jive, danced to lively music ranging from the big bands of the 1920s, to the current top-action swing bands. Continuing with the traditional dance styles are The Solas School of Irish Dance, from Peterborough. Founded in September 2014 by Ray Chambers and Lindsey Rees, the dancers include boys and girls from the age of four upwards. Solas is an Irish word meaning ‘light’ or ‘brightness’, and was chosen to reflect the happiness and positivity of the dance style. We are also pleased to announce the return of the Farcet Dance and Twirl Majorettes. With their distinctive bright outfits and pink BMW mascot, they will be performing lively routines to entertain the crowds. Other dance groups performing on the day include the Pig-Dyke Molly with their traditional Morris-type routines, and the Whittlesey Christian Church Dancers, with their upbeat colourful flag dances and ‘street’ style presentation. A talented line-up of singers and musicians will perform at St. Mary’s church throughout the day, including school choirs, barbershop, the Whittlesey Wind Ensemble, and an array of vocal and instrumental soloists. The Festival really is a fantastic day out for all the family. Don’t forget to line the streets for the Carnival Parade, starting no later than 10.15am from the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street. With so many taking part this year, we’ll keep you posted on the exact timings. Look out for further updates in Discovering Whittlesea in the run up to the Festival. A Word From Your Local Police... It is with some sadness and a heavy heart that I write this, my final article in Discovering Whittlesea. It has been a pleasure and an honour serving the local community, both as a local officer many years ago, and recently as the local sergeant. I will take many fond memories with me, not only from working in the area, but also of living here. I will leave you all in the capable hands of Rob Savill, who will take over the reins at the end of June. I have no doubt that he will do a fantastic job. I leave behind a great team in Ian, Rem and Tracey, who do some fabulous work in the community, working long hours with vulnerable people, tackling anti-social behaviour, and doing their very best to protect the local community. Their dedication, professionalism and endeavour to complete tasks successfully is phenomenal. I know their work does not always get the credit or praise it should, so I will do it for them here: well done and thank you, team! I would also like to praise all the agencies, local businesses, councillors, volunteers, and

PUTTING THE ‘FUN’ INTO FUNDRAISING Aliwal Care Centre, in Turners Lane, would like to thank all the local people and businesses who supported their fete, held in May. The day went exceptionally well, with family and friends from all over the country offering their support. The atmosphere was fabulous and a fun day was had by all – not to mention, a staggering £2,514 was raised for the residents’ comfort fund. Please accept this as our acknowledgment.

Local Scientist is Back on The Box Scientist and author Professor Brian J Ford, who lives in Eastrea, is back on the Discovery Channel in a television series about the ‘Top Ten’ in warfare. Brian has also been featuring in the Nazi Secret Files television series, based on his recent book about the secret weapons of World War Two. Brian was responsible for setting up the Eastrea Centre, and this month he is back lecturing in the USA.

Visit AJS for an Afternoon of Fun Alderman Jacobs School’s annual fete is taking place on Saturday July 16th between 12.00 and 2.00pm. This is a really popular event for the school, and is well attended by members of the school and their families, as well as the wider Whittlesey community. As always there will be a great selection of stalls, including: traditional games and fairground rides; a barbeque, selling burgers and sausages from Jones Butchers; ‘lucky duckies’; the grand prize draw raffle; and much more. We are hoping for a lovely sunny day, and look forward to seeing everyone there.

Coates Students Celebrate The Queen's Birthday Coates School celebrated the Queen's birthday with a ‘round robin’ of exciting activities on Friday June 10th. Each class chose a ninety-minute sponsored endurance challenge, which included sporting activities, maths, and reading and spelling related challenges. The children also took part in a ‘Great Coates Cook Off’, bringing in royal-themed cakes that they had created. A raffle for a large celebratory Royal Cake was held, and monies raised from sponsorship will be donated to one of the charities for whom the Queen is patron. Children had a wonderful time taking part in all the activities, many of which were held outside in the sunshine, and the day was rounded off by a traditional fish and chip lunch, eaten all together outside.the secret weapons of World War Two. Brian was responsible for setting up the Eastrea Centre, and this month he is back lecturing in the USA.

Local Hero Unveils New Village Sign Anyone travelling through Coates recently will no doubt have spotted a new fixture on the green – the village’s new sign, which has replaced the old one after thirty-three years. The sign was donated by the Coates WI in celebration of the organisation’s centenary, and on hand to unveil it on April 23rd was Derek Bedford, who had looked after the previous sign for over twenty years. Fundraising took place over six months, with £560 collected by fundraisers, and £500 donated by the Town Council from the Tesco fund. The sign depicts scenes of traditional village life, with the image of two geese – reflecting the days when they were a common sight on the village green – retained from the old sign. Jill Anthony, Vice-Chairman of the Coates WI, said, “It was only right that Derek should unveil the new sign. Not only was he keeper of the old sign, but three years ago he was chosen to be the Coates Citizen of the Year for all the work and support he has given to the village.”

"This involved taking the sign down to be re-varnished roughly every three years. Eventually it began to rot, and a gentleman in the village (who wished to remain anonymous) offered to pay for the wood if Derek was willing to make a new one. Last year, we offered to present the village with a new sign in celebration of the WI's centenary year.” The sign was designed by Coates artist Jeni Cairns - whose show garden at the 2014 Hampton Court Flower Show won admiration from Monty Don - using an intricate type of fretwork. The metal framework and stand was designed and made by James Neacey, of Fenland Furniture, Whittlesey.

GardenING TIPS for JULY The most important thing is to make sure you water your plants throughout July and the summer months, or else be prepared for poor results from root crops and flowers. For late flowering plants in particular, failing to water can cause problems like mildew. • Feed containerised plants, and keep well-watered for a profusion of summer colour. Remember that a high potash feed promotes more flowers, brighter colours and makes the flowers last longer. • Removing finished flower heads from plants stops them producing seeds and extends their lowering period. Cut back delphiniums to produce a second flowering period. • Weeding can be a full time job in July, what with all the hot weather and watering, so make sure you keep up with the hoeing, or at least pull out any weeds with flower heads to prevent them seeding everywhere. • Give your lawn a summer feed, and be careful not to cut it too short in order to prevent it from drying out in the hot weather. • Mulching borders can help retain moisture, and keep down the weeds to help cut down

your workload in the garden. Inspect lilies for the scarlet lily beetle, whose larvae can strip plants in days.

• Vine weevils can also be a problem at this time of year, so keep a lookout as they like to eat the fibrous roots. Small holes and tears in new foliage of ornamentals are most likely caused by capsid bug. • In dry weather, powdery mildew can be a major problem with plants such as clematis, roses and honeysuckle, so spray regularly with a fungicide as prevention is better than cure. • Ensure all vegetables get a regular, consistent supply of water. This will aid healthy development and help to avoid diseases, disorders and bolting. Plant out brassicas for a winter supply. • Watch out for potato blight and tomato blight, and remember that cherry trees can be pruned straight after harvest.

THe Founded in 2002, FACET is a local charity which provides care and training to adults with disabilities. The charity is based in March, and runs four shops across the area – two in March, one in Chatteris, and one in Whittlesey. The tuition offered to students covers a range of different areas, including horticulture, woodwork, and life skills such as cooking. Students are given the chance to gain valuable retail experience within the charity’s shops, potentially helping them to progress into a job in the retail sector. The shops also sell some of the items produced by students, including plants and woodwork items such as benches. Fundraising has recently allowed the charity to purchase a new van, replacing their old one which has been off the road for some time. Shop manager Louise Bryan said, “We are always keen to accept donations of good, quality furniture for our showroom, and with the arrival of our new van, we are now once again able to collect and deliver donated items.”

Whittlesey Unfortunately, last month’s guest speaker on the Citizens Advice Bureau had to call off at short notice, but Laurence Seaton, from Buttercross Auctions, kindly stepped in, bringing along artefacts for us to examine and value. Hopefully, by the time you read this, Andrew Mortlock will have presented a definitive guide on the history of Whittlesey’s brickworks. With our numbers steadily increasing, four new proposed interest groups - ‘Creative Writing’, ‘Drama’, ‘Calligraphy’ and ‘Flower Arranging’ had initial meetings in May. Our interest groups will soon number thirty!

WHITTLESEY LADYSMITH WI Pictured are some of our members who walked the 3km Town Trail in May, in celebration of National Walking Month. We were impressed by Whittlesey’s architecture and history, and all discovered something new about our home town. After our walk, we met other members for a splendid meal in Jo Jo’s café.

Last month’s meeting was attended by a number of non-members, with several signing up there and then! Whittlesey Wind Ensemble has over twenty musicians, many from Whittlesey, with some travelling from Peterborough, March, Market Deeping and Stamford. We are available to play in concerts and fetes, and have entertained residents in a local care home. We will be playing in St Mary’s Church at the Summer Festival. This month, we thought it would be interesting to introduce the band’s new Director of Music. Stefen Dicks has been working with the band since February, bringing with him knowledge he learnt from Kneller Hall, the Royal Military School of Music, and Birmingham Conservatoire. He is a man of many musical talents; a trumpet player who enjoys Jazz/American Song Book, he plays in pit orchestras for many musical theatres, and is also a secondary school music teacher. Due to the ensemble’s current size and mix of instruments, he will undoubtedly be putting this knowledge to use, as he rearranges more suitable music to give us better concerts in the future. As always, we are looking for more players who would like to join our growing group. Brass, woodwind, saxophone and percussion players are all welcome. WHITTLESEY WI June’s meeting was a members’ night, and a ‘Bring and Buy’. Unfortunately Luke Payne from the Arts Council was unable to attend, so members instead had a quiz, which they enjoyed. Arrangements were also made for the summer outing to Lamport Hall, near Northampton, on July 11th. The next meeting is on Tuesday July 5th, at St. Andrew’s Hall at 7.30pm, when Brian Pearce will give a talk about volunteering at Railworld, in Peterborough. THE WHITTLESEY INDOOR BOWLS CLUB For the past five years, we have held a six week introductory and training course on Saturday mornings. This year we are starting on August 6th at 9.30.am. to introduce newcomers to our most enjoyable game. In the past, these introductory courses have proved very successful and over the years have resulted in well over a hundred people coming along to give it a try. Most have found it to be pleasurable, and you do not have to worry about the weather – a warm welcome always awaits you. As well as gentle exercise, bowling brings a new challenge and something to do over the winter months. We have over 250 bowling members, and a third of these are ladies. This is a sport where finesse is more important than force, and where the ‘gentler sex’ can comfortably hold their own! If you come to the our Introductory Course, we will provide all the equipment necessary and all we ask is that you bring along a pair of flat soled footwear. (We have five separate rinks each costing over £10,000 so we have to look after them.) Each measures 40 yards long and 6 yards wide, and they will be staffed by experienced club members who will ‘show you the way’. By the end of the six weeks, you will know whether this is for you and will then decide whether to become a club member. For the first season, new bowlers will have their own leagues so that they start on a level footing and not be overwhelmed by those who have been at it for years.

The main season begins mid-September through to mid-April. During this time, we run 19 internal leagues as well as enjoying weekend friendly fixtures with other clubs. We also run nine individual competitions on a knock-out basis throughout the season. Bowling sessions are for 2 hours 15 minutes, and begin at 9.30am, 11.45am, 2.00pm, and 4.30pm, as well as evening sessions beginning at 7.00pm. In addition to all these, there are daily opportunities to book a rink for extra practice and training etc. Also, there is a social side to the club, with events usually on Saturday nights, including Quiz Nights, Beetle Drives, Bingo, and barbecues in the summer, when we run a limited programme according to demand. We have a fully licenced bar, together with a good range of hot drinks from our inhouse dispenser. With over 260 members, we are probably the biggest sports club in Whittlesey and are well known to be a very friendly bunch!

Whittlesey Christian Church Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Around eighteen months ago, Cllr. David Mason and I began discussing the need of Whittlesey residents who could not access the Peterborough Foodbank, despite food going from the town. Following further meetings, the WEFA was established. Is there a need for food aid in Whittlesey? David and I often get asked this question, and the answer is definitely YES. How does it differ from a foodbank? It focuses on supporting people until they no longer require aid, rather than restricting them to a limited number of vouchers. If required, we help with advice on cooking nutritious, cost-effective meals, while our allotment provides fresh produce in season. WEFA is not a franchise, but a programme specifically created for those living in the Whittlesey catchment area, by people with understanding, commitment and expertise. Other differences we only share personally with those on the programme, and do not make public in order to avoid them being abused.

Will the project get abused? We have been careful to create a structure capable of identifying and addressing abuse. In its first year, we consistently supported forty people; twenty-four of these came off the need for support, and only two were identified as taking advantage of it. Since then the need has continued to grow, and we are extremely grateful for all the support we receive. Where does support come from? Whittlesey Council, members of the public, businesses and organisations all make financial contributions or food donations. Heron Foods, Nisa, Co-op, St. Jude’s RC Church, Queen Street Church, the C of E churches, and the Salvation Army shop and church are also fully supportive, along with Whittlesey Christian Church, which is the distribution and administration centre, and also provides free use of its design and marketing facilities. How do people access help? Referrals come from different sources: schools, medical practices, housing associations, various government and council agencies, and people in need also telephone us directly. Accessing aid has been made as simple and efficient as possible.

Blood Part 4: The Final Journey Home Over the last three months we have been tracing the bloodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s journey through the arterial system, the system that delivers blood from the heart to the cells. The walls of the arteries are specially designed to suit their purpose. Some have elastic walls to calm the blood flow down; others have muscular walls to give us flow control; whilst the ones closest to the cells (capillaries) have tiny holes that allow substances to escape and make contact with the cells. It is only the small molecules that can fit through these holes. The larger molecules remain within the capillary. At the same time, the cell will release molecules which find their way into the capillaries. This is the cross-over point between the arterial and venous system, and so the nomenclature changes. The capillary is now referred to as the venules, and thereafter veins. Although the capillary and venule are continuous, there are two events that define the cross-over point: 1 There is a large pressure drop. Because molecules have been forced out of the holes, the energy left in the system is significantly less (in fact close to zero). 2 The oxygen molecules leaving the capillaries (as the cells need oxygen), thus changing the colour. Beyond this point the blood is de-oxygenated. This is why we colour veins blue and arteries red. The pressure drop is not helpful because the blood still has a long way to go before it gets back to the heart. This is particularly true if the blood finds itself in the feet! To get the now de-oxygenated blood back to the heart, we use three simple yet ingenious means.

1 We move, thus creating muscle contractions, 2 We breathe, thus sucking blood up towards the heart, 3 We use a step by step approach through our strategically placed one-way valves (only found in our venous system). The walls of the veins are elastic, and so are expandable and compressible in accordance with what is happening around them. As they are closely associated to, and pass through, our skeletal and muscular system, they are momentarily stretched and squashed whenever we move. This acts like a mini momentary pump propelling the blood forward, albeit by a small amount. Fortunately, the veins are divided into tiny segments, each separated by a one-way valve. So as the veins are stretched and squashed, the blood is propelled through the one way valve into the next segment. There it will stay until we move again, and step by step the blood gets closer to the heart. The muscle and physical movement can be viewed as the pushing force, pushing blood up towards the heart. There is a pulling force as well, in the form of breathing. Breathing creates pressure differentials between the abdomen and chest, which draws blood up; think of sucking fluid up through a straw. For the venous system above the heart (i.e. head, neck and shoulders), gravity is an extra pulling force, whilst below the heart (i.e. arms, abdomen, pelvis and legs) itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a hindrance unless you can do a head stand! With each successive breath and each successive movement, gradually the venous blood moves step by step close to the heart... and there our journey ends.

The Perils of Student Life With only a few months of summer until a fresh new clutch of our youngsters embark on their exciting new life as a student, the following might act as a warning to them all … especially those rather partial to the “falling-over-water”! Putting a novel slant on the age-old student hobby of “getting totally legless” is the recent case of a Plymouth University marine biologist, Amelia Welch. Twenty years old and the owner of a prosthetic right hand, since having been born with a congenital hand malformation, the unfortunate Miss Welch is now appealing for its return, having removed it in a bathroom, after a summer ball, and waking up to find it gone! “I do take it off to go to the toilet, but most of the time when I go out I put it on because it gives me confidence,” she said. “I must have been drunk when I took it off and forgot about it. I went back to halls with friends and went to bed and the next day I realised that I did not have it.” She is offering a £100 reward to anyone who finds the hand and returns it. Artists Give Their Time for Thorpe Hall Artists, including Liz Kerner, Anne Smart and Glyn Plumb, have pledged their time to lead workshops at the thirteenth annual Art Week being staged at Thorpe Hall, Peterborough, this summer. Covering an array of artistic disciplines - from painting portraits to capturing landscapes in pastels - the artists will be using the beautiful surroundings of Thorpe Hall and its landscaped gardens to inspire classes. Places are filling up quickly on the workshops, which all take place during the week of August 15th -19th . All money raised during the week will be donated to funding incredible care at Thorpe Hall Hospice. As well as taking part in the all-day workshops, amateur artists are also invited to paint in the hospice's gardens, without tuition, for a small donation. Linda Dalton, Art Week organiser and a Thorpe Hall volunteer, said: “The atmosphere is always great – plenty of learning and lots of fun. We are so grateful to the tutors who give their time so generously, and have helped to raise more than £30,000 over the past twelve years.”

Could You Help Baby James? James Overland was born in October 2015, and after being admitted to Peterborough City Hospital in January this year, was diagnosed with Menkes Syndrome the following month. Menkes Syndrome is a disorder which affects copper levels in the body, typically in infants, causing several problems, such as sparse and kinky hair, failure to grow at the expected rate, and deterioration of the nervous system. The disease is more common in males, and affects one in 100,000 to 250,000 people. The life expectancy for someone with Menkes Syndrome is a mere two to three years. As a result of the disease, baby James has frequent stays in Peterborough City Hospital, Addenbrookes Hospital, and St. Thomas’ Hospital, London. His family wants to raise awareness of Menkes Syndrome, and raise funds to help with James’s care. A race night and various actions have already been held, and plans are underway for a charity football match, to be held on September 4th, featuring amongst its line-up Goggle Box star George Gilbey, and ex-“Posh” footballers. However, more help is still needed, and James’s family is appealing for further support and donations. HEATSTROKE Having a warm fur coat can be beneficial in the winter months, but when it comes to summer, our pets can struggle with the heat. Dogs and cats don't sweat like we do, but perspire through their feet, and pant to help cool down. This can be effective in mild cases, but if their body temperature rises and they cannot cool down, it can be fatal if not corrected quickly. Signs include: • Dark or bright red tongue and gums • Tacky or dry gums and tongue • Staggering

• Seek veterinary attention immediately • Apply cool wet cloths around the feet and head, until you can get to a vet • If cooling, keep an eye on your pet’s temperature - cooling them down too much can cause hypothermia Preventing heatstroke:

• Allow your pets access to paddling pools or air conditioning. • When exercising your dog, do so in the morning or evening, when it’s cooler. Avoid walking in the heat of the day, and take water when out walking.

• Seizures • Lethargy

• Never leave your pet in a hot car, even with the windows open and parked in the shade. The heat in the car can put your pet in fatal danger in only a short time.

Prolonged heatstroke can cause: • Vomiting or diarrhoea • Coma • Death Hot environments can cause heatstroke. Common causes include being left in hot cars, or even travelling in them without proper ventilation, and being left outdoors with no shade or shelter from the heat, and no fresh water to drink. Certain breeds of dog (such as short-nosed breeds like pugs and bulldogs, who might struggle any time

If you suspect heatstroke:

• Ensure your pets have access to shade and adequate fresh drinking water.

• Excessive panting

Local cycle shop closing down

We recently received the news that our local cycle shop, Whittlesey Cycles, is closing down this summer. We spoke with Andrew & Pippa, who run the shop between them.

Is it true that you’re closing down the business?

Andrew: Yes, unfortunately. As some of our regular customers know, we’ve been trying to sell it as a going concern for some time but there’ve been no takers.

What’s the plan now? When are you closing the doors for the last time?

What are the reasons you’ve decided to close? Isn’t cycling doing well at the moment? Pippa: Actually the shop is doing very well just now, but for family reasons we can’t continue running the business much longer. Our children are growing up and need more of our time, and we can’t give that while we’re running a shop. Andrew: Our lease on the building ends this autumn and we haven’t been able to agree a new one with the landlord. We looked at moving premises but, with just the two of us working in the shop, we couldn’t move without closing down for at least two months. After a lot of thought we decided that there was no choice but to close down permanently.

You’ve been there for five years, but it’s been a cycle shop for much longer than that, hasn’t it? Pippa: Yes, we took over from Richard and Rosemary Marson in 2011. They’d run the shop for over twenty years before that I think. This building

Andrew: Well, the first thing is to clear out the stock, so we’re having a closing down sale from July 1st. We’ll finally close the doors on August 12th, but will be available by appointment for a few weeks after that to fulfil our commitments on servicing and repairs. We’ll cease trading completely at the beginning of October.

And the two of you? Do you have plans for the future? Pippa: Andrew has been working part time as an engineering consultant, and he plans to build on that business. I’m going to focus on our family.

Is there absolutely no way the shop can stay open? Andrew: If a buyer appears in the next few weeks, then it could be kept going. Whilst we can’t contemplate moving premises on our own, we could help a new owner to set up in a new shop.

Is there anything else you’d like to say? Pippa: We’re disappointed that we can’t continue, and with more and more shops closing I think it’ll leave a gap in the town. We’d like to thank all our customers for their support and business over the past years.

How the Great Level Became a Fen: a local folktale The 1926 book Legends of the Fenland People, by Christopher Marlowe, contains a lurid collection of local folktales, from memories of fenland riots to myths of witches, giants and werewolves. His story of “How the Great Level became a Fen” mixes early Antiquarian knowledge with an imaginative explanation for the fenland bog-oaks: “During the Roman occupation of Britain, Valerian, the governor, was a cruel monster, and terrible indeed was the fate of the Iceni who fell into his hands. Nowhere was this more evident than in Isinnis, the new Roman settlement on the sea-coast. Mandru, a British priest, called a meeting at the temple of the sea-god. He addressed the throng: “Death to the invader and freedom for the Iceni! The gods fight for us.” Suddenly, the Roman guards appeared. It was but the work of a moment to cut down the unarmed Britons where they stood. Mandru managed to escape, and for months he disappeared. Much later Mandru returned to Isinnis in disguise. Wherever he found a British slave, he would whisper “Friend, arise this night and be gone. Destruction comes fast upon this city and if thou tarry, there shall be no escape.” That night there arose a sudden wind from the sea, which

awakened the British slaves. They gasped with amazement, for the city gates stood open, and swiftly they fled to the forest. Mandru met them, saying “There is no time to delay - the gods are angry with Rome and will destroy every Roman city. It has been revealed to me where I shall lead you.” By dawn, they reached higher ground at the head of a river. The Romans awoke to a tempest. It raged ceaselessly and prevented them following the Britons. A gigantic column of water arose out of the depths of the sea and approached the shore. Valerian refused to leave, saying “What can British gods do to Rome?” Then the wave struck, overwhelming Isinnis and all the neighbouring settlements. It swept relentlessly inland, swallowing trees, houses and rivers as it passed. Mandru declared, “The sea, our great deliverer, shall always be present here, and we shall

Terrific Teacher Retires after 30 years! Mrs Wendy Seaford has decided to retire at the end of this month, after thirty years of teaching at Park Lane Primary and Nursery School. As a daughter of a Head Teacher, Mrs Seaford knew from an early age that she would follow in her late father’s footsteps. Her first teaching post was in Walthamstow, London, followed by a move to St Ives, and then finally to Park Lane, where she established her long-lasting career. Some of our Year Five and Six pupils recently interviewed Mrs Seaford, and this is what she had to say about her retirement: “I will miss my role as Head of School, although I am looking forward to pursuing more of my hobbies. These include listening to music, gardening, trips to the theatre, and reading with my Kindle, which is one of my most treasured possessions. I certainly won’t miss having to get up at 6am, especially in winter when it’s cold and dark!” During her time at Park Lane, Mrs Seaford has worked with five head teachers, seen many changes, and taught generations of many families. Mrs Bradshaw, a Year Six teacher, said, “Mrs Seaford will certainly be missed. She has been part of Park Lane for as long as I have been teaching here, and is definitely an inspirational leader!” Mr Ingham, a Year Four teacher, added, “Many teachers were not only sad but surprised by her decision to retire.” Mrs Seaford has thoroughly enjoyed her teaching career, the highlights being residential trips with the children, putting together Key Stage 2 productions, and playing the piano for assemblies.

Playing in the Past At New Road Primary School, our Squirrels and Hedgehogs classes have been learning all about vintage toys this term. They visited Peterborough Museum for a very exciting talk about two very different bears: the old Fred Bear, and the modern Mike. They also learnt about a Victorian dolly and a very old ‘push me, pull me’ toy. They then had the chance to play with all of the toys and make a push up clown. They finished their visit with a walk around Peterborough, identifying the similarities and differences to Whittlesey! To conclude their interesting topic about vintage toys, the children invited all their grandparents to an afternoon tea party at school. The children made sandwiches, quiches and cakes for the party. All the grandparents were asked to bring an old toy that they could remember playing with when they were children. Everyone had a lovely afternoon, looking at and playing with the toys, and enjoying all the delicious food and cups of tea.

William Tordoff, a Year Five pupil, commented, “Mrs Seaford helped me through all the years I have been at Park Lane, and it will take some getting used to with her not teaching anymore.’ George Porter, also in Year Five, said, “It will seem weird not having Mrs Seaford as our Head of School in September, because she has been here all the time I’ve been here.” This amazing lady will not be entirely lost to the school, however, as she will be returning twice a week from September to handle our school data.

ROTARY CLUB OF WHITTLESEY Rotary is an international organisation of people who work together to help those in need, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and promote peace worldwide. There are more than 34,000 member clubs around the world, comprised of over a million member ‘Rotarians’. The Rotary Club of Whittlesey was formed in 1954, and has supported many local groups and organisations since then. The club is a welcoming and sociable place, where the common interest of friendship is as much a part of the group as its volunteering and fundraising activities. Members increase their social and cultural understanding by inviting along guest speakers from a wide range of backgrounds and businesses. At one of its recent meetings, the club presented staff from Thorpe Hall Hospice, in Peterborough, with a cheque for £871. The money, which was raised from commission earnings from an auction held by Laurence Seaton, fundraising activities at the Whittlesey Fair, and a Christmas bag-pack at the local Co-op, will go towards the daily £8,000 costs of providing care at the hospice. Hospice fundraiser Nilesh Patel, who was present at the meeting along with Nursing Assistant Kelly Scaria, said, “We are extremely grateful to the Rotary Club for their donation, and cannot thank them enough for all their support.” Also included in the club’s

The club is a welcoming and sociable place donation was £56.60 from the auction’s collection box, and an additional donated cheque of £25, bringing the total amount to £952.60. The Rotary Club of Whittlesey also supports the Cambridgeshire Life Education programme, which delivers important ‘life skills’ lessons to three to eleven year-olds in two high-tech mobile classrooms. Rotarian Stephen Hodson said, “The club is pleased to have supported Life Education for some twenty years, over which time it has raised £30,000 to support the cost of their visits to the four Whittlesey primary schools.” Money is raised from an annual quiz, to be held this year (its twentieth) on November 18th, at the Ivy Leaf Club. Louise Augarde and Di Fenner, from the Life Education programme, were guest speakers at the club’s meeting on June 6th, where they demonstrated some of their work and thanked the club for its support over the years.

1 What is your fondest memory of your childhood? Meeting the fibreglass dinosaurs at Blackgang Chine amusement park, on the Isle of Wight, when I was three. I was awestruck, and it started an interest in palaeontology lasting many years.

2 WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY? I was going to say my parents, but actually my one-year-old son, Theodore, has changed my life a lot in much less time.

3 WHICH TWO CHARACTERS (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? I'd like to eat with Mr Spock (from Star Trek) and Rex Harrison's Dr Dolittle. I'd love to hear all about their travels and their experiences talking with other species, and as we are all vegetarians we could share the same food!

4 HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS? Keen, focused, pragmatic, friendly, loyal.

5 What’s your favourite thing about Whittlesey?

The excellent Museum, obviously! More seriously, I am fascinated by the amount of local history in the Whittlesey area just waiting to be discovered, and I hope that the museum can help to share some of that with everyone.

6 …And if there was one thing you could change, what would it be, and why? I commute to Whittlesey from my home in Cambridge - I'd prefer it if there was only a five minute drive between the two!

Jennifer Barback has been Curator of Whittlesey Museum for two years, having spent around ten years working in the museum world.

8 Where do you see yourself in the future?

She completed a first degree in Archaeology and Anthropology at Durham University in 2002, and has also studied Heritage Management.

I hope that I'll be able to keep working in museums for many years to come - although with so many museums all over the country struggling for funding that is a privilege, not a right - and I'd like to be taking Theo on lots of trips to see fibreglass dinosaurs on my days off!

7 What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self? “Don't worry, there are grown-ups who keep hamsters too”. I got my first pet hamster when I was fourteen, and today I have eight pedigree ones which I take to National Hamster Council shows all over the country (they have never won me a Best In Show, though!).
