Welcome to the September edition of Discovering Whittlesea... I hope you all had a wonderful summer, and managed to enjoy at least some sunshine! It seems crazy to think that we’re now in September, and two thirds of the year is behind us. For us in Whittlesey, however, September means one thing – the Whittlesey Festival! It’s always a delight to see the town centre filled with people, music and laughter, as families enjoy the numerous activities and entertainments on offer. The highlight for me has to be the spectacular classic car display, but whatever your age or interests, there is guaranteed to be something for you. The Discovering Whittlesea team will be around on the day, so feel free to pop along and say hello – I look forward to seeing many of you there!
Jack
We have plenty of interesting features from our regular contributors this month, as well as news from local clubs and charities. As summer draws to an end and the children begin another year at school, it’s easy to feel a little deflated in September, but there are a whole host of local events to keep you occupied over the month ahead, including the amazing Whittlesey Festival on September 11th. There’s exciting news from Whittlesey Town Council on their plans for a Neighbourhood Plan, a subject they’re keen to hear your views on, while you can also read more about the recently-formed Mud Walls Action Group, who are working hard to protect an important part of Whittlesey’s heritage. Find out more in the Community Matters section.

Flu Although we’re still enjoying the summer weather at the moment, we will soon be in autumn, and it will be time to think about having your flu vaccine. Flu is a common infectious viral illness which is spread by coughs and sneezes. It can be very unpleasant, but you'll usually begin to feel better within about a week. Flu is not the same as the common cold - it is caused by a different group of viruses, and the symptoms tend to start more suddenly, be more severe, and last longer. Some of the main flu symptoms include: • a high temperature (fever) of 38˚C (100.4F) or above • tiredness and weakness • a headache • general aches and pains • a dry, chesty cough Cold-like symptoms – such as a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, and a sore throat – can also be caused by flu, but they tend to be less severe than the other symptoms you have. Flu can make you feel so exhausted and unwell that you have to stay in bed and rest until you feel better. The treatment for a cold or flu usually involves rest, paracetamol and plenty of fluids. However, you should consider visiting your GP if: • you're sixty-five years of age or over • you're pregnant • you have a long-term medical condition, such as diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, or a neurological disease
• you have a weakened immune system; for example, because you're having chemotherapy, or have HIV • you develop chest pain, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, or start coughing up blood • your symptoms are getting worse over time, or haven't improved after a week To stop the spread of flu once you have it, it’s important to use tissues and dispose of them in a bin, and wash your hands regularly. The annual flu vaccine can help reduce your risk of getting flu each year, although it's not one hundred percent effective because it doesn't work against every possible type of flu virus. A flu vaccine is available for free on the NHS for: • anyone aged 65 and over • pregnant women • anyone who is very overweight (with a body mass index over 40) • children and adults with an underlying health condition (particularly long-term heart or lung disease) • children and adults with weakened immune systems Flu clinics will be held at the Surgery on the 15th and 22nd October from 9.00-11.00am. No appointment necessary.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better What is so special about water and why have I been told to drink more of it? Imagine this scenario. You are lost in the dessert and spend the day wondering around aimlessly in the hot sun with no food or drink. Fortunately at dusk you stumble across a settlement. What is the first thing you will ask for on arrival? Water, not tea, coke or other stereotypically favour-some beverage. The body can survive a few weeks without food, but only a few days without pure water.
Thirdly, water is great at helping our bodies regulate itself. It prevents large swings in acidity/alkalinity in our blood as well as helping us regulate our body temperature. Our cells are very sensitive to change, they have narrow operating parameters and if we fall outside of the operating window they malfunction. As an example, if our body temperature rises by just 1.5˚C we become feverish!
There are a number of properties that makes water indispensible for human life. The first is that it is a strong fluid. This is due to its polar nature. A polar molecule is one that has a slightly positive and negatively charged ends. This means that if you put lots of water molecules together, they arrange themselves in a manner where the positive end of one is facing the negative end of another. This creates an attraction force called hydrogen bonding. This attraction force alongside the bonding within the water molecule itself is what stops one water molecule being pulled or pushed away from its neighbour. We therefore say water has a high surface tension and explains why a 50 tonne boat can float on water! Water is within and surrounds all our cells and having a high surface tension provides a resistance to all the compressive forces placed on our bodies.
Water regulates our temperature because it has both a high specific heat capacity and a high heat of vaporisation. Simply put, water requires a lot of energy to heat up and to evaporate. An average human can tolerate a 0.5˚C body temperature rise before we initiation cooling methods such as sweating, seeking shade, etc. Not much really. But if we have a fluid inside of us which can absorb a large amount of energy before it shows signs of heating we can survive. This is why our bodies crave water in warmer weather, it’s our cooling blanket.
Secondly, water is a strong polar substance. So when we add a weaker polar compound (let’s say salt [sodium chloride denoted NaCl]) it attracts the opposite ends of the salt molecule (in a similar manner to the formation of hydrogen bonding described above). The strength of the attraction, between the positive part of the water molecule and the negative part of the salt molecule, rips the salt apart into its base components. The process we have described is dissolution and is what allows our bodies to break compounds down and recycle them into more useful products for our cells.
Water is also an integral part of our second defence against overheating, sweating. As sweat forms a thin film over our skin it contacts the heat energy from the environment first. The film acts as a heat sink, absorbing the energy until it evaporates. The more energy it can absorb the less energy penetrates into the body. The less energy penetrating our bodies the cooler we remain. It is for these reasons that staying hydrated is so important. Our bodies crave water not tea, coffee, squash, alcohol, etc. Why give it an inferior substitute when water is easily available and cheap. Various studies from across the globe estimate that between 50-75% of the population are dehydrated! This is crazy when water comes out of our taps! Anyway, we hope this article has gone some way towards convincing you to swap that mug of tea for a glass of water.

Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service: September Bulletin Harvest is upon us, and we’re calling on local residents to help our fight against straw stack arson. Stack fires can quickly spread and endanger not only people and livestock, but also life-long work on farms. Stacks burn very slowly, meaning crews are committed for long periods of time and thus are unavailable for other emergencies. Don’t forget, many firefighters attending rural incidents like these are on-call personnel, and their retention at a stack fire impacts directly upon business and services in their community. What can you do? We’re urging residents and those passing through rural areas to keep a careful watch. Do you see someone acting suspiciously around stores of hay or straw? Is there an unusual vehicle near farm buildings? Become a community member of Arson Watch, and keep an eye on stacks in your area. Report suspicious activity to police on 101, and dial 999 if you see a stack fire. For more information on fire safety, log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk, follow us on social media, or call 01480 444500.

Whittlesey Festival
Don’t Miss it!
With just days to go before the Festival on Sunday September 11th, excitement is building as we anticipate the fun and laughter that will fill the Market Square and surrounding streets. The Festival kicks off at 9.55am with a spectacular musical parade from the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street - we would love as many people as possible to line the streets for this wonderful display. The parade will make its way to the Market Square for the official opening by the Mayor at approximately 10.25am. The air will be filled with music, song, and dance, and a full programme of activities throughout the day will culminate in a musical finale by the Romford Drum and Trumpet Corp and Peterborough Highland Band, finishing at 4pm. Children can enjoy free (or subsidised) rides and amusements, puppets shows and face painting, and there are numerous stalls for you to visit. Take a walk back in time with a display of over one hundred vintage vehicles – many of them unique to this event - and don’t miss the rare opportunity to see the Gilbern, which has been totally restored by retired racing mechanic David Nicholson. Also be sure to visit the Schools Art Exhibition at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street. This really is a day not to be missed - see below for a summary of just some of the things you can enjoy:

Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Whittlesea, Coates & Eastrea areas and manager Mark Sherwood

| A Moment with Reverend Nigel Each of our parish churches has two churchwardens, who are elected annually to serve as officers of the Bishop and representatives of the people. Churchwardens have a number of important legal, spiritual, pastoral and mission responsibilities. They are expected to lead the parishioners by setting a good example, and encouraging unity and peace. They have a particular duty to maintain order and peace in the church and churchyard at all times, and especially during services. They are legally responsible, with the Vicar, for all the property belonging to a parish church. They have a duty to keep an up-to-date record of the church’s property, and to produce these lists for inspection in case of a visitation by the Archdeacon, or his/her representative. When a vacancy means that there is no Vicar, the churchwardens ensure that a minimum number of church services continue to be held in the parish, and in particular that the Eucharist continues to be celebrated every Sunday, and on every Principal Feast. To be elected to the office of churchwarden, a person must be: 1) baptised in the name of the Holy Trinity; 2) at least twenty-one years old; 3) on the electoral role of the parish; 4) someone who receives Holy Communion on a regular basis.
Are you looking for a wooden building for your garden?
Churchwardens serve for a period of one year, but then may stand for election again, with many holding office for a number of years. This is important, as they gain knowledge and experience with which to support the people and clergy in their roles. We are very grateful to our churchwardens David, Sarah, Sue, Ken, Rosemary, Paul, Alan and Elizabeth - for the time and effort they freely give to their parish’s people, congregation and church. On behalf of us all in Whittlesey, Pondersbridge, and Coates – thank you! God bless you all. Nigel Tel: 01733 293676

What Do You Know About Whittlesey's Mud Walls? Whittlesey is unique within Fenland, and indeed Cambridgeshire, in having mud walls as boundaries. These walls date from the 1780s to the late nineteenth century, from an era when there was a tax on bricks.
Mud walls are also prone to colonisation by solitary masonry bees. The erosion damage caused is usually not severe, and the bees’ persistent nature means it is usually best to leave them alone.
The mud walls in Whittlesey are constructed using the 'cob' or 'mass earth' walling technique. The earth is mixed with straw, water and local soil, to stabilise and bind the materials, and made into a 'sticky dough' consistency by treading.
The Whittlesey Mud Walls Group was formed in March 2016 to ensure more attention is given to these important walls, many of which have disappeared over the decades, by increasing awareness and supporting owners with their care and repair. The group also has the support of Fenland District Council's Conservation Team.
A strong mud wall is said to need 'a hat and a stout pair of boots'. The foundations and plinth – made from small amounts of Clipsham or Ketton limestone - are therefore very important in providing protection from rain, ground moisture and rodent damage. A roof or coping is also needed, which could be thatch, timber, slate or tile, and many walls were given a protective coat of either lime render or lime wash. The walls are on average seven feet high and twenty inches deep, with the plinths measuring around forty inches deep. Lengths can vary from three feet to over one hundred feet.
Come and visit us at the Whittlesey Festival, where we’ll have photos and literature on display in the car park of the Black Bull. We’ll also be joined by professional restorers from SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings), who’ll be demonstrating how to tread mud in the traditional way. And of course, the members of SPAB and Whittlesey Mud Walls Group will be on hand to chat and answer any questions.
Have Your Say on New Neighbourhood Plan Whittlesey Town Council propose that the whole parish of Whittlesey be designated as a “Neighbourhood Area”, and its planning application to pursue a Neighbourhood Plan has been approved by Fenland District Council. A Neighbourhood Plan typically covers: • The development of housing, including affordable housing, and bringing vacant or derelict housing back in use. • Provision for businesses to set up or expand. • Transport and access • The development of schools, health facilities, places of worship, leisure, and entertainment facilities, community and youth centres and village halls. • The restriction of certain types of development and change of use • The design of buildings • Protection and creation of open and green space • Protection of important buildings, and historic assets

• Promotion of renewal energy projects To bring a Neighbourhood Plan into force, it is necessary to gain a majority ‘yes’ vote in a public referendum. Therefore, the most important part of the process is to engage with residents. Information will be available at future public exhibitions, and we are in the process of creating a questionnaire which will be delivered to every household in the Parish of Whittlesey. This will be your chance to have your say, and help ensure the wishes of local people are reflected in Whittlesey’s Neighbourhood Plan as much as possible. WTC Neighbourhood Plan members will be at The Whittlesey Festival on Sunday September 11th, where we look forward to discussing with you your ideas for the Plan. Hereward Television to Benefit from High-Tech Skills Taught to Local Citizens Hereward Media took a huge step towards meeting its long-term objectives this week, as the Charity Commission approved its application to become a registered charity. The media training provider will introduce high-tech skills to those seeking different avenues for their future careers, or even those simply looking for a new and enthralling hobby. The course work outputs from these beneficiaries will include broadcast content for the Hereward Television local TV channel, which will serve Peterborough and the Fenlands. In addition, the base of operations will also act as a media resource centre, serving all sections of the community, but in particular the under-25s and the ‘baby boomer’ generation upwards, with a focus on those left behind by recent technological revolutions. Alex Geairns, Station Director for Hereward Media said: “We have been working with the Charity Commission for the last few months on how to best serve our community. We were already a not-forprofit company limited by guarantee, but now this granting of charity status demonstrates the belief that this project will bring tangible benefits to our region. The Hereward Television outlet will differ from other stations in that the content of shows will not be driven by a quest for ratings, but entirely by the interests of those who decide to benefit from our free training.”
In the background, the physical infrastructure for the project will also be put into place. For further details, and to register interest in the available training, visit the website at www.hereward.tv.
Surprise Presentation at Eastrea Fun Day Mr Ritchie Walton, who chairs the Eastrea Village Hall Trust, made a surprise presentation at the Trust's 2016 anniversary day. He revealed a plaque to commemorate the work by Professor Brian J. Ford (left) in bringing the £1 million project to a successful conclusion. Brian said, "This was a shock - we had no idea!" The Trust also gave Brian and his wife Jan (right) a gift of wine to say thank you for their work. Jan said, "We are both overwhelmed - the committee have all been so generous." Next year's family fun day will be held in July. As always, there will be no entrance charge for visitors.
The next stage of the project is to liaise with professional bodies to arrange accreditation for the courses on offer, and develop training modules to the best possible standards.

| Your Garden
GardenING TIPS for SEPTEMBER September is the month where the summer bedding plantings start drawing to an end, but like hanging baskets, you shouldn’t neglect - a little deadheading, watering, and feeding can keep them going until mid-autumn. When they are finished, you can replant the borders and patio tubs with pansies, violas and wallflowers. To give a great show through winter and spring, plant hanging baskets with spring-flowering bulbs, winter heathers, trailing ivies, pansies and violas. • Popular bulbs for planting this month will be daffodils, tulips, crocus, snowdrops, aconites, and a multitude of other garden favourites.
you lift the crop, cut the top growth back to ground level. Remember to check for blight, as it’s been a bad year for this.
•
Large clumps of perennials such as agapanthus, euphorbias and geums can be safely divided in autumn. This will help encourage flowering next year, and stop them from taking over your borders. The same also applies to alpines. Take cuttings of tender perennials, such as pelargonium and osteospermum, which will be better in the garden next year if taken from new cutting stocks. Bring into your greenhouse any tender perennials, such as fuchsia, datura and abutilon, before frosts cause damage.
•
It has, however, been a good year for fruit, so continue to harvest your apples, pears, raspberries and blackberries. Berries can be frozen for use later in the year.
•
In September, most perennial weeds are vulnerable to weed-killer before they get too hardy for winter. Applying a product containing glyphosate will ensure that the roots, as well as the top growth, are killed.
•
Harden your lawn up for winter by applying an autumn lawn feed which is high in potassium. (Applying a high nitrogen-based feed will give it a soft, weak growth, making it prone to disease.) Repair patchy lawn with turf or seed this month, and bear in mind that this is the last time of the year to apply a lawn weed-killer to control perennial weeds.
•
Good garden hygiene helps to prevent disease, so clear dead leaves promptly once they start to fall, as rotting leaves – though very useful on the compost heap - can be a source of disease in the garden.
• Main crop potatoes will be ready to harvest once the tops have died off. Two weeks before

WHITTLESEY WI During July, members went on their summer outing to Lamport Hall in Northamptonshire. We enjoyed a guided tour of the Hall, followed by a cream tea in the dining room. The Hall has a beautiful garden, and the kind weather meant we all thoroughly enjoyed exploring it. At August’s meeting, which was an open one, Philip Parker gave a fascinating talk and slide show about 'The Natural History of the Whittlesey Brick Pits', another gem right on our doorstep (www.kingsdykenaturereserve.com). September’s meeting is on Tuesday the 6th, at 7.30pm in St Andrews' Church Hall. Neil Callan will give a talk on 'The Development of the English Silver Spoon'. For more information, phone Ginny on 01733 205148. New members are most welcome.

News from:
Recommended & Appro ed At the time of writing this it's the height of summer, and even though it's been a few weeks since Whittlesey Wind Ensemble's summer break began, it's nice to look back on the busyness of our last few months. We worked hard during our weekly practices to put on two very successful performances during June, in Wisbech and Ramsey - the first with our new Musical Director, Stefen Dicks. When we return from our break on September 1st, we will be perfecting our programme ready to perform at the Whittlesey Festival. Please do come and listen at 11.20 in St. Mary's church. After that, we will be digging out the Christmas music to prepare in good time for the festive season, which will include a Christmas concert in mid-December, and various other performances around the area. These have previously included performances at John Lewis and the Showground in Peterborough. It's an exciting time for the Ensemble, and we are still looking for new members. If you play a brass, wind, or percussion instrument and would like to know more, please do get in touch via our website (www.whittleseywind.com), or email (whittleseywind@gmail.com). We meet at the Methodist/United Reform Church on Thursdays, from 7.45-9.15pm.

The next meeting is on Tuesday September 13th, at 7.30pm, in St Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane. Ruth Sindall will demonstrate the art of making marzipan flowers, to add the finishing touches to beautiful cakes. Members and guests will then be able to try it for themselves, and the resulting creations will be the competition entries for the evening. THE WHITTLESEA SOCIETY The Whittlesea Society was formed in the early 1970s by like-minded people who were interested in the history of Whittlesey, its conservation area, and also wild fowling. Within the society, a group interested in archaeology, led by Mr. Ken Moore, undertook various projects, including digs and involvement in the restoration of a cottage. The Society also supported Mr. Brian Kell when he revived the Straw Bear Festival, and members helped to prepare and serve food to the visiting dance sides in the early years. The Society was also involved in the formation of Whittlesey Museum, which was opened by volunteers in 1976. Thanks to the Whittlesey Charity, the ground floor of the Town Hall is used to display artefacts showing the history of the town and its inhabitants. Much of the museum collection was kindly donated by these original members, who ran and continued to expand the museum by adding their family records and heirlooms. The Whittlesea Society uses the old spelling of Whittlesey, both having been used for hundreds of years. Meetings are held monthly to discuss local issues, mainly ones within the conservation area but also anything affecting the town and surrounding area. Members also enjoy regular speakers and annual visits to other museums and churches. Mr. David Hancock has been secretary for over forty years, and continues to find interesting speakers who share their knowledge and wit on various subjects,
mostly relating to historic events and people’s lives. Many members have volunteered at the museum in the past, and some of the more recent museum volunteers continue to be members of the Society. Representatives from the Whittlesea Society attend The Civic Group at Fenland District Council, where endangered buildings and buildings of local interest are monitored, discussed, and action is taken where needed. The town’s mud walls have been discussed at these meetings over the past three years, as they are an important and perhaps overlooked part of Whittlesey’s history. Some members of the Whittlesea Society have now formed The Mud Wall Action Group, and hope to re-record and promote the importance of the remaining walls in the town.
Meetings are held monthly to discuss local issues, mainly ones within the conservation area but also anything affecting the town and surrounding area The Society’s September meeting takes place on Monday September 12th, in the Town Hall, at 7.30pm. Jenny Windsor will speak on ‘The Garden History of Peckover House’. For more information, speak to Secretary David Hancock.

Method
• Pre-heat the oven to 200˚C/400F/Gas Mark 6. • Strip the carcass of your pre-cooked chicken, cutting meat into large pieces. • Saute the leek (or onion), bacon and mushrooms in the butter and oil. When soft, add the flour. •
Add the vegetable stock, stirring continuously then add the milk so that the sauce is rich and creamy. You can add more liquid if the sauce is a little too thick.
• Add the pre-cooked chicken and stir carefully until the meat is completely coated, then empty the contents into a large pie dish. • Cover with your chosen pastry, making sure to create a vent in the pie top, then brush with milk. • Bake in oven for around 25mins or until golden.

| A word from... Your Mayor Alex Miscandlon Hello everyone. As summer appears to have arrived at last, we can only hope that it continues for the Whittlesey Festival on September 11th. Once again, there will be a huge variety of things to do for all the family, from cars and motorcycles for petrol-heads, to slides and rides for the children. Also available will be good food from all the eateries nearby. I hope to see you all there. The Mayoress and I attended a commemorative service for the Lonely Anzac at Peterborough Cathedral, the story of whom can be found in a book entitled “The Lonely Anzac”. Well done to the Mayor of Peterborough and his team for this commemoration. The second music festival on the Market Place, with “The Fedz” and Shannon Buckton, went down a storm - well done again. By the time you read this article, the third concert will have taken place, this time featuring the “Motor City Vipers”. Hopefully the weather will stay fine, and I will report further next month. On October 9th I will be holding my Civic Service at St. Mary’s Church, at 3pm. There
will be refreshments in Childers after the service, and all are welcome. I hope you all watched the recent BBC Four programme about Must Farm. It was very informative, and we hope to have more information on progress concerning the site soon. Some people are already aware that our Clerk, Mrs Sue Evans, is no longer Evans, but now Mrs Sue Piergianni. We wish her and her new husband Frank all the best. Finally, just a reminder that the Councillors are still holding the Saturday surgeries at the Council offices. Full details can be found on the WTC website, and in this magazine. Regards, Councillor Alex Miscandlon, Mayor of Whittlesey

Servicing Laptops and Towers Laptops and towers are brought in for repair for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, the patient has contracted a virus or malware which is making it misbehave; other times, the owner has “done something”, and it doesn’t work properly anymore. The majority of faults seen, though, are hardware problems, such as the screen not coming on, graphic card or hard disk not working, or the patient just persistently refusing to start. The major cause of hardware, laptop or tower failure is dirt and dust building up inside the machine. This blocks the exhaust of a laptop, or processor cooler of a tower, meaning heat builds up and parts fail. So, how can this be dealt with? My recommendation is that once a tower or laptop is eighteen to twenty-four months old, you take it to your preferred computer shop for them to dismantle, clean and service the interior. Should you wish to attempt the fix yourself, you will need to remove the power supply to the tower, remove the side panel, identify and disconnect the fan from the motherboard, and then disconnect the fan and the cooler from the processor. Once cleaned, the processor should then be coated with fresh thermal paste, and everything should be re-attached in reverse order.
complicated job, which I suggest you leave to the professionals!
As for a laptop (though I really cannot recommend this to an amateur), the procedure usually involves disconnecting the power supply and removing the battery; removing with a special tool the keypad; releasing the top cover screws from the base, and disconnecting various connectors; then removing all base screws, and separating the laptop into two halves. Then, depending upon the model, it is sometimes necessary to remove the motherboard, along with various other internal parts… a very
I do hope you have found this article useful, and if you have requests for particular information in the future, then let me know through the magazine.
However, if your laptop is fairly new, a regular service with a can of compressed air can help keep the internal fan and pipes clear. Spray into the vent where heat leaves the laptop, and dust and dirt will be ejected through the intake slots, usually located on the base. A word of warning do not use a hoover on ‘blow’, as these generate static electricity which can seriously damage the internal parts of the laptop or tower.

We are also grateful to all who sent kind letters, cards and flowers - it was much appreciated. We would also like to thank Bulls Funeral Service and the celebrant Kevin Bending for their sympathetic and professional services.
Jason’s Coast to Coast Trek Jason Osborne, a 35-year-old father of two boys, is giving up his family’s holiday this year to raise money for ‘Defibrillators for All’. Starting on September 10th, Jason will be trekking a massive 192 miles across England, from the west to the east coast. He will be crossing through three National Parks, carrying with him 45lbs of kit including tent, food, water and other useful equipment. Starting at around 8am, he will walk for approximately ten hours per day before pitching up and camping for the night. The journey will take him through some steep and unforgiving routes, and is expected to take fourteen days. The start point will be at St Bees, Cumbria, where Jason will collect a stone from the beach and dip his toes in the sea. When he arrives at Robin Hood’s Bay, North Yorkshire, he will place the stone on the beach and again dip his toes into the sea, before celebrating with a well-earned pint. He should arrive on September 24th.
What is ‘Defibrillators for All’? We are a local registered charity which will celebrate its third birthday in November. We have already placed thirty-one public access defibrillators into our local community, with more in the pipeline. In the last month, at least six of our units have been taken in emergency situations, proving that there is a real need for them to be strategically placed. We now need to move into the second phase of our work: screening our young people for undiagnosed heart conditions. This is what Jason’s fundraising will go towards. Each day of screening (in which one hundred people can be seen) costs £5000. ‘Defibrillators for All’, alongside another local charitable group, ‘Bless Your Heart’, have planned two screening days next year. It is hoped to make it an annual event, and the charity is very grateful to Jason for his efforts.
Jason will be sending regular web cam updates so his supporters can follow his progress, and you can donate via his ‘JustGiving’ page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Jason-Osborne1

Help Shape the Future of Hospice Care in your Region Having expanded services over the past year, and with ambitious plans to extend its reach even further in the future, Thorpe Hall Hospice, in Peterborough, is now introducing a service user group to ensure the views of patients, carers and the community are heard. ‘Impact’ will become a channel of two-way communication between users of the Sue Ryder Hospice and the hospice’s management team, ensuring that the views of patients and their families are taken into consideration, and feed into plans for the development of services. Hospice director, Jane Petit, said: “As a national charity, Sue Ryder has a board of trustees, but Impact will be a local group working specifically at Thorpe Hall. We will be looking to the group to provide us with a patient and carer perspective on our services and plans.” As well as attending regular monthly meetings, members of Impact may also be asked to get involved in the appointment of senior staff, attendance at internal hospice meetings and ongoing training. “We see this as an opportunity for people who have experience of hospices – not necessarily Thorpe Hall – to use that expertise to improve the service for future users.” A fact finding meeting is being held at Thorpe Hall Hospice on Thursday October 13th, at 11am, for anyone interested in finding out more about Impact. Please come along with no obligation. This year Sue Ryder is marking 25 years of incredible care at Thorpe Hall Hospice. Every single day, it costs £8,000 to provide their services and, as a charity, they must fundraise more than half of that. Wondering how you could help? Visit: www.sueryder.org/thorpehall
Target Ovarian Cancer: ‘The Silent Killer’ Earlier in the year, I wrote an article in this magazine to not only raise awareness of this terrible disease, with which Ady, my wife, had been diagnosed in March 2015, but to also outline the family’s plans to try and raise £5000 for the charity ‘Target Ovarian Cancer’. Our three children, Tim, Kirsty, and Simon, together with Kirsty’s partner Graeme, had signed up for a three-hundred-mile charity bike ride from London to Paris, taking place over four days from July 27th to July 30th, and Ady and I then started our own fundraising events to support their efforts. My reason for writing this article is to thank friends, family and everyone who has supported us, as it looks as if our total raised will exceed £12,000. Sadly, Ady passed away on August 3rd, but she was able to see, from her hospital bed, our children and Graeme, cycling up to the Eiffel Tower having completed their task. Needless to say, she was very emotional and immensely proud, as am I, of their achievement, and of their continuing love and support. Thank you all once again. Phil Knighton

Rabbit
Viral Haemorrhagic
Disease
You may well have seen in some areas of the press that there is a new strain of Viral Haemorrhage Disease in rabbits, RVHD-2. As with all viruses and many bacterium, RVHD has the ability to alter its make-up according to the conditions, which makes the vaccination that is currently available at your vets of little use with this new strain. The new strain has been shown now to be geographically widespread in the UK, and the biggest risk of contracting the disease is in large groups of bunnies where there are frequent additions to the stock. The risk is not quite so high where there are just one or two bunnies, but bio-security must be as high as possible in each case. The risk to all rabbits will increase substantially over the next five years, as the new strain takes hold in the wild population. RVHD is a disease that has a very rapid onset, and often results in sudden, unexpected death. The pets are often well one minute and in excruciating pain the next, suffering internal bleeding followed by a quick death. The virus is airborne, but can also be spread via mice, rats and birds.
48
D I S C O V E R I N G
The risk to all rabbits will increase substantially over the next fif ive years, as the new strain takes hold in the wild population The latest advice that we have is that rabbits will still need to be vaccinated against Myxomatosis and the first strain of VHD, RVHD-1, as they often are at the moment, and then two weeks later, against the new strain, RVHD-2. The combined Myxo and RVHD-1 vaccine needs to be administered on an annual basis, whereas the RVHD-2 vaccine is administered annually in low risk areas and situations, but every six months in high risk areas, or areas where there has been an outbreak. The vaccine for the RVHD-2 must be imported from Europe, and there are unfortunately some problems with getting hold of stock. However, it is ordered, and we should soon have the new vaccine available. For further information, please contact us at Whittlesey Vets on 01733 685514.

Whittlesey Christian Church
Does Sorrow have to Overwhelm us? Sometime ago, I came across this very obscure verse which helps us see sorrow in a different light: “When he was born, his mother called him Jabez, meaning ‘borne in sorrow’, because she was experiencing sorrow at the time, and Jabez became more honourable than all his brothers.” Over the course of my long ministry career, I have met many who have been born with the proverbial “silver spoon in their mouth”, and are able to spend their way out of any distressing situation. I’ve also met those who, with limited means, had no option but to weather every storm in the best way they could. I found that, although wealth and influence may help soften the blows of sorrowful times, it doesn’t necessarily make better people. Some grew to become selfish, conceited and arrogant, unable to handle difficulties without money. On the other hand, I noticed that those who, due to limited circumstances, were forced to
face sorrowful situations on the strength of their own mental attitude, often grew to possess richer personalities and a greater strength of attitude. The following is an extract from Dr. Mercola’s research into the effects of the sorrow caused by grief: “It's well known that psychological stress physically affects your health, but new research highlights just how extreme that can be. It found that the sorrow of losing a friend or loved one raises the risk of having a heart attack the next day by twenty-one times, and in the following week by six times. It began to decline after about a month.” We do not have to become victims to situations which throw us into times of sorrow. As in the case of Jabez, they can help us to become better and stronger people. The good news is, if you’re struggling to turn times of sorrow around, you don’t have to stand alone. Give us a call, or come along to church one Sunday morning to hear more life changing words.

| The Local Music Scene by Dave Bailey
LET THE MUSIC PLAY Music and Performance Festivals and ‘On the Road’:
T
Following on from last month’s look at the open mic scene, we now see how performers progress to festivals.
he festival scene is split into two categories. The big, often-televised and lucrative multi-stage events are usually home to the established bands with merchandising and media hype. These are sometimes supported by unsigned and acoustic stages, where new and emerging artists are showcased, and new CDs and careers are launched. Paid admission and radio/TV rights fund the infrastructure, and on-site food and camping attracts both large crowds and big names. The alternative is the local festival or fete (usually charity or town square), where invited performers provide additional interest to support local stalls, car shows, performing arts and the like. Often based on acts playing for beer or burgers, these performances help to
56
raise the profile of the event and offer a platform for the artists. The quality of talent and range of genres represented at the four Fenland towns’ events (Whittlesey, Chatteris, March and Wisbech) would easily challenge the commercial performances, though rehearsal time is still the key to a polished performance. The new kid on the block is the Showcase event, where acts are invited to a venue such as the Key Theatre, which holds a monthly Glasshouse event on a Sunday afternoon. Around the area there are a number of pubs that also host open mics and acoustic sessions. These are all well attended, and often treated as a kind of ‘Musicians Club’ by the acts. From these events, many of the Festival acts develop their craft and are asked to perform at events.
D I S C O V E R I N G
Whittlesea
For acoustic sessions, acts will regularly travel to Stamford’s Voodoo Lounge and The Railway at Ramsey, while they head to the Cherry Tree, The Crown and The Ploughman (all in Peterborough) for powered sessions. The latest venue, hosting every two weeks, is the Seven Stars in March, and with new venues starting sessions every month, there is a risk of over saturation. This would result in fewer performers attending, and landlords may need to review their motives and the support returned to acts, to prevent them from becoming just ‘free entertainment’.

| Local History by Jen Barback of Whittlesey Museum
Car Dyke – The Mystery of the Missing River The Western edge of the Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire Fens is marked by the route of the nineteen hundred year old Roman canal, Car Dyke. Car Dyke is likely to have been dug on the orders of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in around 125AD, although it may also have been developed in stages over a longer period. The earthwork included a water-filled channel approximately fifteen metres wide and up to four metres deep in some stretches, making the entire system one of the largest RomanoBritish canals in the country. Hadrian was interested in draining the fenland around the important city of Lindum (Lincoln), so that it could be settled. Other theories about Car Dyke are that it was used as a canal to transport goods north to Lindum by water, or that it was dug to make it easier to fight the local Iceni people (led by Queen Boudicca), who lived in East Anglia and all across the Cambridgeshire Fens. The course of Car Dyke included an eighty five mile-long stretch running between Peterborough and Lincoln. Near Whittlesey, the dyke runs directly from Peterborough to Eye, falling to the west of Flag Fen, and at Eye the course then turns sharply through ninety degrees, towards the north-west.
It is thought that Car Dyke also ran south, joining Peterborough and Cambridge - sections of the dyke are well-known and protected at Waterbeach, just to the north of Cambridge. Unfortunately, the course of Car Dyke between Peterborough and the south of the county has been lost. One theory is that Cnut's Dyke, running from Horsey Hill to Ramsey through Pondersbridge, was originally part of the Roman canal, rather than being cut a thousand years later under the orders of the Viking king Canute, as local legend describes. The dykes along Kings Delph Highway or Milk and Water Drove are also possible options - but for any of these current dykes to be the missing Car Dyke, large banks would need to have been eroded back into the waterway, and then a narrower, modern channel recut along parts of the same route. Deepening the mystery is a wide, clear crop-mark which can be seen from the air in the fields surrounding Pondersbridge. It’s a straight-sided artificial structure of appropriate size, which approaches the
Whittlesey side of the village from the northwest, then makes a sudden right-angled turn and runs through the centre of Pondersbridge, parallel to Cnut's Dyke and Oilmills Road, but tens of metres to the north. Could this be the missing canal, now completely filled in and forgotten? Investing IN VOLATILE TIMES
M
ost of us have some exposure to the investment markets, either directly or indirectly. For example, a company pension may be invested to preserve or develop the fund, so that it can pay benefits to all the entitled employees and past employees. You might have your own personal pension that is invested in a fund, or funds that are investing on your behalf. Maybe you have an Equity ISA, or an investment portfolio that you manage or is managed for you.
The point I wish to discuss is that fund values can increase or decrease when the values of companies vary, and we have recently experienced some significant changes in the fortunes of certain sectors within the UK economy and wider afield. Cautiously invested funds will differ in their profile when compared to adventurous ones, or those described as balanced. A bold investment strategy should deliver greater rewards than a cautious one, the flip side of this coin being that the potential losses may be greater with an adventurous approach in times of stress. I am often asked
whether there is a way to get the best of both worlds; that is, high returns with low volatility. The answer is both “yes” and “no”. It is important to recognise that there are few guarantees, and those that are provided have to be paid for. Having made that point, I have reviewed a variety of cautious funds that, after all charges, have easily outstripped the rate of inflation over the last year (a year that has included some significant events) – this is because there are some very good fund managers that consistently turn in good results. It is important that you understand the level of risk you are prepared to accept, and compare that to the level of risk that your funds are currently exposed to. There is no point taking more risk than you need, and a very cautious approach may not deliver the returns you require. It is therefore important to review matters with someone that understands your circumstances and whether changes are required. If you need advice from an Independent Financial Adviser with access to the whole market, please contact me for a free initial meeting.

worthwhile (like the three-year-old who said, “I have just had an impatient poo!”).
3 WHICH TWO CHARACTERS (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? My maternal great grandmother, who by all accounts had a very varied but hard life, including having the celebrated Ruskin attempt to strangle her when she was his house maid. My wife’s parents, who had sadly already both passed away before we met. I am sure they would have been wonderful company if the rest of Shirley’s family are anything to go by.
Nick Mitchell
4 HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS?
ick grew up on the southern edge of London, where the city meets the North Downs. He went to College in Matlock, and then started his career at Sir Harry Smith Community College in Whittlesey on June 21st 1976. That September, he met his wife, Shirley, at a social event for new teachers (she had started at Coates), and they married in 1978. He and Shirley have lived in Whittlesey ever since, and have three grown-up children and two granddaughters. Nick retired from Sir Harry Smith after forty years at the College this summer.
N
Having taught at the College for the whole of my career, I have had the pleasure of meeting a great many young people who have grown up into mature adults, and many have become parents themselves. So I think that the people are probably the best thing about the town. I especially enjoy meeting all the people that I have taught over the years, and hearing what they have done with themselves since leaving school.
1 What is your fondest memory of your childhood?
7 What advice would you give to A 16-year-old YOU?
One of my most striking childhood memories was my first Scout summer camp, in a field on Dartmoor - I was given the task of sitting in a grey mini-van, listening to the 1966 World Cup Final, with the instruction to sound the horn every time England scored! (Perhaps because it’s the only football match I have ever taken any interest in!)
I think the advice would be the same as I would give to all 16-year-olds; always do the best you can at whatever you are doing – that way, you can have no regrets, and can never say to yourself “if only I had just worked harder, or done more.” It is always easy to do just the minimum, but that is never satisfying in the long run.
2 WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
8 Where do you see yourself in the future?
Logical, practical, organised, dedicated, considerate.
5 What’s your favourite thing about Whittlesey?
I think without a doubt it has to be my wife and family. As the children have grown up, the challenges of being a parent, and now grandparent, are at times daunting, yet so often these are rewarded with marvellous off-thecuff quips or quirky statements that make it all
6 …And if there was one thing you could change, what would it be, and why? Whittlesey is a wonderful town, but having grown up and gone to College in very hilly areas, I still miss the hills and valleys. However, you do not get such wonderful big skies with hills!
Hopefully enjoying my retirement, and doing the travelling that we didn’t do when we were younger. When we left College, gap-years did not really exist, and backpacking all over the world was not really feasible. Mind you, I’m not sure we want to go backpacking… a little more luxury please!
