Welcome to the November edition of Discovering Whittlesea... It’s been a busy month, and as we head into November, I find myself wondering where the last few months have gone – I’ll soon have been editor for a year! I was lucky enough to attend the recent Must Farm event at SHSCC, where members of the public enjoyed an evening of information and discussion about the fascinating Bronze Age site right on our doorstep. You can read all about it in this month’s Spotlight, which has been written by two of the students involved in the presentations. Just down the road from Must Farm is Horsey Toll, which this month features in our History page. Like me, I’m sure you’ll find it a truly fascinating read; I for one had no idea about the existence of a Civil War fort so nearby! My thanks go to the volunteers at Whittlesey Museum for providing such wonderful pieces about our past, and indeed to all our contributors, who make this fantastic magazine what it is. I’m always keen to hear from readers, so, as usual, if there’s something you’d like to see in the magazine, please feel free to email me via the address below.

Jack

The weather might be getting colder and darker, but we have plenty to cheer you up in this month’s issue. Lift your spirits with a browse through Charity Matters, where we bring you news on the amazing fundraising efforts of two selfless local people, or take a look through the Events Diary, where I dare say there are even a few Christmas events! We also have two local business success stories from Whittlesey Travel and Hugh Crane, while in Community Matters, there’s more news from the Whittlesey Festival as we take a look at the results of the wonderful Schools Art Competition. Whittlesey certainly has much to be proud of! Enjoy the read.

What happens when my arteries harden?

Figure 1: Cross section of an artery

Figure 2: Cross section of an artery which has undergone a hardening process

To appreciate the structure of an artery, look at the diagrams above. We have an inner space surrounded by a single layer of cells (termed endothelium). The endothelium is stuck to a stretchable membrane, which in turn is stuck to a muscular tissue. The muscular tissue enables control of the arterial diameter. The stretchable membrane cushions the force of the blood flow in the same way that a net cushions the impact of a ball. In a simplified sense, the muscular walls give us control of our blood pressure, whilst the stretchable membrane softens the flow. The process of arterial hardening (termed atherosclerosis) stiffens both the stretchable membrane and the muscular tissue, with the unfortunate impairment of their attributes. The process usually begins with damage to the endothelium, for which there are many causes. The damaged cells burst and die. This not only creates a hole, but also releases various adhesion molecules, which encourage monocytes (white blood cells) and fat floating within the blood to stick to the area.

This monocytic/fat mixture acts as plug for the hole. Unfortunately, the mixture is sticky and so grows faster as more mixture is laid down. If left unchecked, the plug will fill the diameter of the artery. To prevent this, the cells at either end of the plug start to replicate and grow until they cover it, thus separating the plug from the flowing blood. Unfortunately, the plug material cannot be disposed of, and subsequently hardens over time to form a plaque (see figure 2). This renders the artery’s ability to contract or stretch in that area arduous, if not impossible. The inability to control the pressure or flow in that area means the sections of the artery both up and downstream become vulnerable to damage. Arterial hardening is a silent process, and consequently we only become aware of it once it has taken hold. That is why it is important to take note of the widespread advice regarding diet, exercise, activity and stress management, even if you do not have any symptoms.

Remembrance

November is the month of Remembrance. In our civic lives, this will be recognised on Remembrance Day and Armistice Day. Our involvement in the nation’s events is detailed below. Remembrance is also a personal matter. Throughout its history, the Church has set aside November as a particular month to remember those family members and friends who have died. We of course also remember them throughout the year, and on anniversaries. This month is a time for special services; services that invite us to come together with other people, to support each other in our grief and thanksgiving. Our various Christian communities in the town and district will do this in different ways, and at various times.

Matters Artistic Talent to be Proud of at Whittlesey Festival No New Route Planned for Next Year’s Cycle Race – But Fingers Crossed for 2018 Earlier this year, Whittlesey Town Council carried out a survey to find out if residents would like to route the Tour of Cambridgeshire cycle race through Whittlesey. The people of the town voted in favour of this. Since then, the Council has been working with the race organisers to try and make this happen in 2017. Unfortunately, due to other changes imposed on them, much of the budget set aside for Whittlesey has had to be used elsewhere. This means that the organisers do not have enough funds for the race to come through Whittlesey in 2017. I know that this will disappoint many people, but the organisers remain committed to Whittlesey and will now work to try and make this happen in 2018.

THE WHITTLESEY BUSINESS FORUM

One of the regular highlights of the Whittlesey Festival is the Schools Art Exhibition, and this year was no exception. On September 11th, students from the five local schools had their work on display at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street, where it was enjoyed by hundreds of visitors, family and friends. Marija Lysak, who organised the competition on behalf of the Festival, said: “Involving the local schools is such an exciting and important aspect of the Festival. It’s a fantastic opportunity for others to see first-hand the creative talents of young people from the community. The standard of work was absolutely superb, and we had more entries this year than we’ve ever had before. On behalf of the Festival Committee, I would like to thank everyone who entered – they should be extremely proud of themselves.” Needless to say, the judges had a challenging time choosing the winners. Prizes were awarded on the day by the Mayor of Whittlesey, Councillor Alex Miscandlon.

“It has been a fantastic experience visiting the exhibition. The standard of work is outstanding. It is lovely to see how creative children in Whittlesey are, and to see it all exhibited together” One visitor's comment

Do come along to the Forum meeting on Wednesday 30th November at the Falcon Hotel, 6pm for 6.30pm, when the speaker will be talking about the town's Christmas Lights campaign. There will also be details of the Forum’s own CHRISTMAS WINDOW competition which will be open to all businesses in town. See you on the 30th. For more details, contact Steve Hodson on 01733 203064.

Following the presentations, guests reminisced over a cup of tea. Because of the success of these sessions, the event will be repeated during the winter months with some new presentations and activities. The Hall is also looking forward to its Christmas Festival, being held on Friday December 2nd and featuring live music and various craft stalls. Competition Winners Followers of our Facebook page will know that we recently launched a competition for one lucky person to win £50 of vouchers to spend in a Whittlesey shop or restaurant. To be in with a chance, you simply had to 'like' and share our page. The lucky winner was Julia K. Bottomley, from Pondersbridge - congratulations Julia, and enjoy your vouchers! And well done to Dylan Head, our summer competition winner! Six year old Dylan, who lives in Birmingham, was on holiday in Whittlesey with great-grandparents Maureen and Derek Hippisley, when he and his sister Tanya walked around the town to find the pictures in the shop windows.

| Your Garden

November GardenING TIPS

November means that winter is on its way - wind and rain are on the increase, and leaves are beginning to fall more quickly. Collect the leaves from around the garden and place on the compost heap, or place in compost bags to decompose into leafmould. •

There’s still time to plant daffodil bulbs, tulips and other spring bulbs in patio tubs and borders. Pansies, wallflowers, primulas and other spring bedding plants can be planted out. Dahlia tubers should be lifted and cleaned, and stored in a cool frost-free place.

Herbaceous perennials can be cut down, and it is still a good time to lift and divide overgrown clumps. Apply an autumn mulch to protect plants that are borderline hardy, such as agapanthus and kniphofia.

It’s time to send off for seed catalogues and start planning what to grow next year. Bare-root hedging plants, trees and shrubs become available this month. Plant as soon as possible, or heel into the ground until ready to plant, to stop roots from drying out.

Bare-rooted roses can be planted now, but if replacing roses, do not plant in the same soil as the old plant, or you will suffer from the same diseases. Lightly prune your established bush roses now, if you have not done so already, as reducing their height will prevent wind-rock. Roses are generally shallow rooted, and can become loose in the soil if buffeted by strong winds.

Pruning of many deciduous trees, shrubs and hedges can be carried out now, and throughout the dormant season. Rabbits and deer can be a nuisance as the weather gets colder, gnawing the bark from shrubs and trees. Placing guards around new woody plants is advisable, or you can use a garlic spray to deter rabbits, deer, crows and pigeons, as well as smaller pests such as slugs, snails and aphids. This can also be used on your fruit and veg without tainting the crop.

Prune autumn-fruiting raspberries to the ground after harvesting, as well as other fruit bushes such as blackcurrants, redcurrants, white currants and gooseberries once dormant.

Whittlesey Christian Church Top Tips From Successful People Since discovering the reality of God, I’ve come to appreciate the amazing relevance of The Bible. Its down-to-earth advice and guidance holds true to every generation and culture. This was brought home to me while holding meetings in Seattle, Washington. I was introduced to a very successful motivational speaker who spoke about ‘Top Tips from Truly Successful People’. I was surprised when he told me that each of the headings in his speech, he had discovered in the Bible. Here are just a few: Here are just a few: 1) Successful People Don’t Hide Behind Excuses They find ways of turning challenges around. Nelson Mandela would never have impacted society if he had hidden behind difficult situations. 2) They Have A Healthy Work Ethic Responding to someone who quoted the phrase ‘everything comes to those who wait’, President Abraham Lincoln added, ‘but they only get the left-overs from those for whom hard work is a habit.’

3) They Live By Principles Winston Churchill refused to waver from his principles, even when they weren’t popular. Apple’s principles are to ‘bring change to the world through technology’, and they do it with every product they launch. 4) They Relentlessly Study Their Craft Mike Tyson watched more films about boxing than anyone else in the sport. He was a student first, a fighter second. 5) They Persevered While Others Gave Up A quitter never wins, and a winner never quits. We were told that it would not be possible to keep services running during the remodelling of our church, and that we would have to do some serious fundraising to meet the £250,000 bill. We refused to give up, and we completed the job without any accidents, begging for money, or resorting to a loan. You can succeed - let’s journey together to make it happen. See you on Sunday at 10.45.

Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service: November Bulletin Fireworks and bonfires can be plenty of fun for all the family to enjoy. The Fire Service highly recommends going to an organised firework display instead of holding one at home. However, if you do use fireworks or light a bonfire at home, we ask that residents take on board our safety advice: • Keep fireworks in a closed box, and always follow the instructions. • Light them at arm’s length using a taper, and stand well back. • Never go back to a lit firework. • Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them. • Don't light bonfires in unsuitable weather, particularly in windy conditions. • Don't leave bonfires unattended. • Build bonfires well clear of buildings, fences and hedges. • Never use flammable liquids to start the fire, and never burn dangerous rubbish such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, rubber tyres, and batteries. • Before you light the bonfire, check that children and animals are not hiding inside and are a safe distance away. For more information on firework and bonfire safety, log on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk, follow us on social media, or call 01480 444500.

Matters

At October’s meeting, Danny Boome from Boome Hair and Beauty gave an interesting talk on how he got started in hairdressing, his work ethos, and his training and encouraging of young stylists.

We bring you items of interest for your home and community. If there is something you’d like us to cover or you have something to say please get in touch at:

The next meeting, our AGM, will be on Tuesday November 1st at 7.30pm, held at St Andrew’s Church Hall. It will feature a bring-and-buy sale, and members will also be making ornaments for their tree, to be displayed at the Christmas Tree Festival in December. New members are welcome. News from

A local charity, “Defibrillators for All”, have asked us to provide the music for a Christmas Musical evening, to help raise funds to maintain the defibrillators currently in place, and to purchase more for other areas within the town. Training and awareness sessions can be provided to interested individuals and groups. In June next year, they are teaming up with national charity “Cardiac Risk in the Young” to provide two days of heart screening for 14-35 year olds. For more information, please go to www.defibrillatorsforall.co.uk. The concert will be at Childers on December 16th. WWE are aiming for a fun evening of music, provided by us and a children’s choir, with Christmas carols and songs for us all to sing along to. We now have a varied music library for Christmas, including old favourites such as “Sleigh Ride” and “Troika”, plus some newer music, including highlights from “Frozen”, “Carol of the Bells” (used

28

D I S C O V E R I N G

in the film “Elf”), and Band Aid’s “Do they Know it’s Christmas?”. As you can see, we’ll be able to provide a varied and entertaining programme! November will mostly be spent working on music for the festive period, although we’ll still look at other music to keep everything fresh and interesting. Any money the band raises for itself will be used to buy new music, so if there is something you would love to hear locally, please let us know. We look forward to working with you. If you would like to book the band for an event or concert, or if you play a brass, wind or percussion instrument, please do get in touch, either via our website www.whittleseywindensemble.com), or email whittleseywind@gmail.com. Give us a try! We meet at the Methodist/ United Reform Church, Whittlesey, on Thursdays, from 7.45pm to 9.15pm.

WHITTLESEY LADYSMITH WI Our next meeting is on Tuesday November 8th at 7.30pm, in St. Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane. We’ll be receiving hair and beauty tips for the party season, and one lucky lady volunteer will enjoy a make-over from Boome Hairdressers. The competition on the evening is 'A Make-Up Bag', which could reveal some secrets! We will be getting together again for lunch on Tuesday November 15th. Members are already busy crafting items for our tree for December’s Christmas Tree Festival, and other local W.I. groups have been invited to join us for our Christmas party. New members and guests are always welcome, and more information is available from Liz (01733 689599), Sue (01733 205927), or on our Facebook page.

Rose Homes is a family-run business located in Whittlesey, and has been building high quality new homes throughout the Cambridgeshire region since 1928. The firm was acquired from its founders by two families in 2006, and we have since sought to bring our experience and knowledge into the business to further develop its reputation. We pride ourselves on delivering highly specified, well-built traditional homes on smaller selected developments in market towns and villages in Cambridgeshire. We believe in providing a more personal service to our customers, many of whom have gone on to purchase more than one Rose home, and, on many occasions, their second or third. All our new homes are covered by the National House Building Council (NHBC) “Buildmark” warranty (or equivalent), and this gives you the peace of mind that you would expect when buying a new home. We believe in delivering more space in a quality-built home, with a high specification, whilst providing a remarkable level of service to our customers; this is where Rose Homes differs from other house builders. To register your interest in any of our developments, or if you own or know of land that might be of interest to Rose Homes, we would like to hear from you. Please contact us via telephone on 01733 351727, or email us at sales@rosehomes.co.uk.

| A word from... Your Mayor Alex Miscandlon Hello everybody. It’s awards time, and first of all, the Whittlesey Festival organisers deserve a massive award for the best show ever - well done to everyone concerned! I recently had the honour of attending the ceremony to mark the completion of the South Barrier Bank works. The project was finished a whole year ahead of schedule, and £10m under budget. Well done guys. On the day of the ribbon cutting it poured with rain, as if nature knew that our efforts have contained its onslaught for the next couple of hundred years! At Whittlesey Library, Steve Barclay and I presented certificates and medals to the children involved in the “Read to Succeed” project, sponsored by WTC. I have to say what a great group of children they are, each of them a credit to all the teachers and volunteers who help them. Then there were the Fenland Business Awards, in which three Whittlesey firms - Hugh Crane Ltd, Lawgistics and Whittlesey and District Business Forum - finished as runners-up, and Whittlesey Travel won “Retailer of the Year”. Well done to all concerned, and better luck next year. I hope more

companies come forward and boost Whittlesey’s profile.

Alex Mis can dlon

On the last day of September, Steve Barclay and I cut the ribbon to open Hugh Crane’s newlybuilt sales outlet in Station Road. The occasion demonstrated the confidence that the company has in Whittlesey, and visiting suppliers were on hand to help Hugh Crane staff celebrate the momentous event. Finally, there has been some question as to me being a true Whittlesey person. For the record, my family has lived in Coates since 1985, with my son attending Coates School, SHSCC and Isle College. I worked in Peterborough, as did my wife, until our retirement. I think we have passed the twenty-five year test! Regards, Councillor Alex Miscandlon, Mayor of Whittlesey

HUGH CRANE

‘Clean Up’ at their NEW Showroom and National Training Facility Hugh Crane (Cleaning Equipment) Ltd held their Open Day on Friday September 30th, at their refurbished site at 148 Station Road, Whittlesey. The multi-million pound investment sees the business strategically placed to meet the ever-increasing demands from customers along the A1 corridor. The new showroom and national training centre was officially opened by Steve Barclay, MP for North East Cambridgeshire. Mr. Barclay praised the re-investment in the business, and thanked the company for their continued support and expansion of the site, on which they have built a loyal client base over so many years.

which gave clients the opportunity to view the latest developments within the sector.

Jim Saunders, manager of the branch, said: “We have been operating from the site since October 2001, and when the option of acquiring the site next-door came up in 2014, we decided that, strategically, it was the right time to expand. Over the last few years, we have seen a large increase in companies investing in the area to make the most of the excellent transport links. The central location and the demand for warehousing has seen an increase in the demand for state-of-the-art cleaning equipment.”

Clover Chemicals ran two sessions on “Cleaning in Place” and their new “Task Based Risk Assessment Tool”. Prochem hosted a session on stain removal from fabrics and carpets, as well as having some fantastic new air freshening products on display. Hugh Crane’s own Engineering department demonstrated their Caskforce Brewery range, along with hygiene systems specifically for the food services industry.

“Clearly, our previous facilities didn’t allow us to cope with this demand, so the investment was essential for the long term growth of the business. Over the last two years a large investment has been made in the site, and we now have one of the largest cleaning equipment showrooms in East Anglia, along with a dedicated national training centre. Customers can now visit the site and demo the equipment before purchasing, which we see as a major advantage.”

Manufacturers demonstrating their equipment included Commando Pressure Washers, MAC International, Kranzle, Karcher, Nilfisk Alto, Numatic, P Wave, IVO, Meguiars, IPC Gansow, and G & S Services from Penrith.

The event was well attended, and ran from 9.30am through to 5.00pm. Refreshments included a hog roast and beers on tap from the Nene Valley Brewery. Suppliers also gave prizes for a raffle, in which money was raised for Sue Ryder at Thorpe Hall, Peterborough. Don’t forget to scale down hook sizes and hook lengths - it’s not unusual to hear of anglers catching really well, fishing sixteen and eighteen hooks to very light lines, and only using a pint of maggots all day!

“C h e e rs!”

Jason Celebrates Epic Trek with a Well-Earned Pint Jason Osborne, an electrician from Whittlesey, recently completed his coast-to-coast walk from the west to the east of the UK. The two hundred mile journey took fourteen days, and, with Jason’s feet in massive blisters by day two, it was no easy undertaking. Jason started his walk by collecting a stone from the beach and dipping his toes in the sea. He repeated this ritual upon arrival at the east coast on September 24th, placing the stone back on the beach, before celebrating with a well-earned pint. Jason’s trek was made even more difficult by some steep and unforgiving routes, and by camping in the wild every night. He ate pre-packed dried food. Jason gave up his family holiday to undertake the walk, and managed to raise in excess of £2200 for ‘Defibrillators for All’. Next year, the charity aims to screen as many young people as possible for undiagnosed heart conditions, and thanks to Jason’s efforts, another forty-four young people can be screened. One day of screening, in which one hundred young people can be seen, costs £5000.

thank William Boardman and GCE, who provided all the extra kit I needed for this epic trek.” “My advice to everyone is to get out and explore our beautiful country. I have truly seen places that I never thought existed, met some amazing people, and made some great friends along the way. What a great country we live in! As they say in Lancashire, ‘Grand as ‘owt lad!” Deborah Slator, from ‘Defibrillators for All’, said: “We are so grateful to Jason for taking on this gigantic task to support the people of Whittlesey, and help us raise much needed funds.” “We now have thirty two public access defibrillators in the town, along with another fifteen commercially owned. There is still no other town in the UK that is as heart-safe as Whittlesey.”

Upon completing the trek, Jason expressed his thanks to all those who supported him: “My adventure is over and my mission accomplished! I want to thank each and every one who donated, and everyone who supported me by commenting daily, and wishing me luck throughout - it's your comments that kept me going. I especially want to

A Word from the Royal British Legion

Local Nurse ‘Braves the Shave’ for Macmillan Cancer At the Jenner Health Centre on Thursday September 22nd, the partition doors were o pened to reveal a nervous - but brave - looking Michele Bradley, who decided to "Brave the Shave" as part of her fundraising push for the Macmillan Cancer Appeal. While others enjoyed the tea and cakes on sale, two hairdressers from Sophisticutz set about Michele's locks with the clippers. Michele explains why she decided to part with her hair in support of Macmillan:"Our family, like so many others, have lost precious loved ones to cancer, and have received support from Macmillan in some of those times… I’m remembering Mavis, my mother-in-law, Glynis, my stepsister, Uncle Ernie, Uncle Spud, Aunt Margaret and Fred.” “We also have friends and family who have fought, or are still fighting, this awful disease, and as a nurse, I have seen many families devastated by a cancer diagnosis. I have also been very privileged to offer comfort in the final days and moments. I've often wondered if I'd be totally grey if I didn't have my hair coloured every few weeks, and would never consider letting it grow out - this is the way to find out, and hopefully raise some money for a worthwhile cause at the same time!” At the time of writing, Michele’s total stands at over £800, smashing her original target of £250. You too can donate by visiting www.bravetheshave.org.uk/shavers /michele-bradley.

Sunday October 2nd was our Annual General Meeting, and the following members were elected as officers for the next twelve months: Chairman – Mr. Ken Mayor; Vice Chairman – Mr. Wally Newman; Treasurer – Mrs. Judy Darby; and Secretary – Mr. Ray Thrower. Our next AGM will be held on the first Sunday in October 2017. We continue to meet at 11.00am at the Ivy Leaf Club, on the first Sunday of each month, and you are most welcome to join us. Preparations are now in full swing for our busiest time of the year. We have our Band Concert on Friday October 28th at the Ivy Leaf Club, while Remembrance fortnight starts on Saturday October 29th. There are also services to be held at local memorials at 11.00 am on the 11th of November, and, finally, the parades and services to be held on Sunday November 13th. If anyone wishes to take part in any parades or help to sell poppies, please contact myself (Ray) or Judy Darby on the contact numbers below. The end of the financial year for the Poppy Appeal was September 30th, and we managed to raise locally just under £10,000. Our thanks go out to everyone who donated, or helped us in any way to raise this amount. We were slightly under last year's total, but it was still a fantastic effort. Let’s hope we can increase on this in the next twelve months. Our next event is the Annual Christmas Dance, which is to be held this year at the Ivy Leaf Club on Friday December 9th. It will include a carvery meal and dancing to the “JimBob Duo”. The dance is open to members and non-members alike, and tickets will be around £10.50 per person. Please contact Wally Newman or Sue Brown at the Ivy Leaf for tickets or more information. Please wear your poppy with pride, not just at Remembrancetide, but all year round. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, while underfeeding can cause your pet to become too thin and lacking in nutrients

Dietary Advice

Is your pet on the right food? There are lots of different brands out there, as well as food for different life stages. It is important that your pet is on the correct food for their age, so that their nutritional needs are met. For example, puppy food has more protein than adult food, to support increased growth during their first year. It also has increased levels of vitamins and minerals to support bone and joint growth. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, while underfeeding can cause your pet to become too thin and lacking in nutrients. You should try not to feed your pet scraps from your plate too often, as not all human food is suitable for animals, and can sometimes cause diarrhoea. Try to keep the amount of treats you give to your pet to a minimum, as again this can lead to obesity. Obesity can cause lots of problems, such as heart disease brought on by high cholesterol, diabetes and early-onset arthritis. Once your pet has developed any of these conditions, they will have them for life. The extra weight puts a strain on your pet’s entire body, and makes it more difficult for them to exercise and in turn to lose the weight.

54

D I S C O V E R I N G

Exercise is a good way to keep your pet fit and healthy, or even to help them lose weight. If they are not used to going for walks, it is a good idea to start out with short ten minute walks, three to four times a day. It is important not to over-exercise young animals, as this can cause disfigurement, because their bones are still soft whilst they are growing. Similarly, as senior animals get older, their bones become more brittle and prone to arthritis. It is therefore better to have short but frequent walks, to prevent their joints from stiffening up, rather than one long walk. Swimming is good exercise for dogs of any age, as this doesn't put any strain on their joints, and helps to increase muscle strength (although not all dogs like water!).

CATCH THEM YOUNG Following on from last month’s look at “newbies”, we now feature one of the local youth performing arts groups mentioned last month.

I

f you attended the performances in St Mary’s Church at the Whittlesey Festival, you would have been amazed to see how young some of the acts were. Future Stars Youth Theatre has been running for the past three years. It is a musical theatre club for children aged from four to fifteen years. Children are taught singing, dancing and acting by learning a range of songs and dances - from musicals to pop songs – and playing drama games, which boost confidence and creativity. Each term, the students work towards a performance to parents. Future Stars has helped many children improve their social skills and confidence in all areas of learning, as well as their technique in singing, dancing and acting. To date, they have performed in fetes, shows and at the Whittlesey Festival. Classes are held on Sundays in St Andrew’s Hall, Whittlesey, and on Mondays and Fridays in St Mary’s Church rooms in Doddington. The theatre school is run by Vicki Mason, who trained at the London School of Musical Theatre. Vicki has been teaching at theatre schools all over the country for the past ten years, whilst also performing professionally as a musical theatre performer. This year, along with Jenny Gould, Vicki performed as one half of musical comedy act “Jensen Duo” at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Future Stars is a great starting point for realising any musical or acting potential, and is both constructive and fun. For more information, please contact Vicki on 07906 919145.

MuST FARM

With this discovery being noticed worldwide, our students will be inspired to delve more into the past of Must Farm

Hundreds of Years of History in One Evening After one of Britain’s most eye-opening sites from the Bronze Age was discovered at Must Farm in Whittlesey, an evening celebrating this extraordinary discovery was held at Sir Harry Smith Community College, for the local community to find out more about the historic site that is right on their doorstep. After an opening talk from head teacher Jonathan Digby, Selina Davenport, an expert from the Cambridge University Archaeological Unit who worked on Must Farm, took the audience through a detailed explanation of the artefacts discovered at the site, with the list varying from completely preserved pots, detailed textiles and even a Bronze Age wheel. An audience ‘Q and A’ answered the burning questions from the local community, with the number of questions showing how interested the public is in Must Farm, and what it tells us about our very own ancestors all those thousands of years ago. Last of all, students from Sir Harry Smith Community College showed the audience how Must Farm had inspired them, with their presentations consisting of poems, explorative pieces and the question of what will happen to Must Farm in the future.

Overall, the evening at Sir Harry’s showed just how curious the local community is about this local discovery, and at the end, the audience left with pride at what our surrounding environment has to offer, both now and in the past. It was also an eye-opener to how the young people of Whittlesey have been inspired by Must Farm; with this discovery being noticed worldwide, our students will be inspired to delve more into the past of Must Farm, but also to nurture and make sure it prospers in the future. Along with the great exhibition of Bronze Age artefacts at Flag Fen, this amazing discovery at Must Farm truly shows how rich Whittlesey is in its history; with some of the best-preserved artefacts ever seen by the archaeological team at a Bronze Age site, we should be proud of where we live - both how it prospered in the past, and the hope we will surely gain from this great discovery for the future. Eamonn Dorling Delivering Simple Financial Advice - that really works

What to do if a Pension Goes Wrong

T

he most attractive type of pension is a ‘final salary’ (sometimes called ‘defined benefits’). However, there are occasions when the arrangements made by the employer are in fact incorrect. If you need advice from an independent financial adviser with access to the whole market, please contact me for a free initial meeting. Data from The Pensions Advisory Service (TPAS), covering 2,744 complaints, indicate that the greatest cause of complaint is delays, followed by entitlement and mistakes. Together, these accounted for 71% of complaints.* 73% of decision-making complaints were about ill health retirement, which brings me to a situation I dealt with recently: an employee was due to receive an annual pension worth just over £19,000 per year from his final salary scheme. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive cancer, and his consultant suggested that he had a life expectancy of less than twelve months. The scheme permitted him to exchange a lifetime pension for a lump sum payment, which would allow the unfortunate man an opportunity to pay off his mortgage and enjoy his remaining time. The lump sum was about £180,000. Move the clock on six years, and the employee is still with us, having been told a few years ago that he had no trace of cancer – he had beaten the odds. Regrettably, his only pension will be his state pension, which is not due to commence for another year, and he has no further benefits available from the pension scheme.

Assuming he did not take independent financial advice, he was not informed about the five year guarantee that was included with the lifetime pension. He was also not made aware that any challenge needed to be made within three years of being given the “all clear” from his consultant. The consultant had worded his report in such a way that there was no guarantee of the employee’s life expectancy; it is unlikely that the scheme trustees will look favourably on this case, because they have a responsibility to ensure the scheme rules are correctly enforced, which would appear to be the case. An IFA would have ensured that all the options were considered, together with a financial report that could have been used to record the advice given. It is possible that the same individual might make the same decision again given the circumstances - maybe an alternative strategy would have better protected his family financially. This is just one of many scenarios where professional advice at the right time can be a better choice than doing it yourself, and possibly not knowing the right questions to ask. My message is that if you don’t really understand the options and decisions you are being asked to make, seek advice from a qualified specialist. *TPAS Annual Review 2015-2016

1 What is your fondest memory of your childhood? My fondest childhood memory is helping to rear a piglet which had been trodden on by its mother. We fed it with a baby’s bottle, and as it grew older it wandered around the garden, grunting at the door asking to be let in!

2 WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY? My parents have had the greatest influence on my life. They were both good role models. They taught me not only practical skills, but encouraged art and craft work. My husband has also persuaded me that I could accomplish many things in life.

3 WHICH TWO CHARACTERS (ALIVE OR NOT), WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY?

Maureen Watson

M

aureen was born in Whittlesey, and after an education at Sir Harry Smith School (as it was then known), she went to work in the local Chemist. She married John, who she had known from school, and as John was in the army, the couple enjoyed their first years of marriage in various countries before returning home. They have two children and four grandchildren. Maureen worked for seventeen years for The Evening Telegraph, collecting news and selling adverts by visiting people in their homes. Having volunteered at Whittlesey Museum since 1977, she was appointed curator in 1996, and seventeen very happy years of working with volunteers and caring for the collections followed. Maureen has also been a member of the Christmas Lights Committee for over twenty years, and regularly dresses as a teddy bear, snowman or Mother Christmas for the street collection.

The late Geoff Oldfield (“Mr Whittlesey”) would make a very interesting dining companion. He would be easy to talk to, and I know he would have shared his vast knowledge of Whittlesey and its inhabitants over the meal. I would also enjoy the company of local artist James Green, who I admire immensely. ’Jamie’ came to my home for drawing lessons when he was working for his Cubs Artist Badge.

4 HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS? Reliable, friendly, considerate, conscientious and forgetful. (Where are my keys?!)

5 What’s your favourite thing about Whittlesey? I love the view of the Market Square, and greeting lots of people I know as I walk through the town.

6 …And if there was one thing you could change, what would it be, and why? The King’s Dyke level crossing!

7 What advice would you give to A 16-year-old YOU? Have confidence and aim high. Do something positive every day, and make every day count.

8 Where do you see yourself in the future? I hope to stay in Whittlesey (Eastrea), enjoying family and friends and being involved in the community. I would enjoy giving walks and talks about the local area.

This has now become an annual event, with some individuals travelling from Yorkshire or even

Their experience ended with a well-deserved cup of tea in the staff room.

Bronze Age Comes to Park Lane

School Pond Brought Back to Life with Help from Froglife

Towards the end of September, the children at Park Lane Primary and Nursery school had an exciting visit from archaeologists at Must Farm.

Following the awarding of a £10,000 Lottery Grant, Coates Primary School have joined forces with Froglife to transform our rather tired-looking pond and wildlife area.

Must Farm is a Bronze Age settlement which has been described as 'Britain's Pompeii', due to its relatively good condition and the fact that it contains the best preserved Bronze Age dwellings ever found in this country. During the day, children took part in a range of activities which enabled them to see not only what had been found at the site, but also gave them an insight into the life of local people at the time. Peter Ingham, Head of Upper School, said, "We were delighted when we were contacted by the people at Must Farm, as we knew this would be an exciting learning opportunity for our children. As a result of the visit, children have been engaged in a project which has huge significance for this area. It is important for us that children learn about what life would have been like all those years ago. We'd like to thank the people at Must Farm for giving us the opportunity."

Over the last year, Katie Rowberry, from Froglife, and her team have been coming into school to work on the pond and wildlife area, with involvement from groups of children and even their family members. The results have been amazing, and we now have a wonderful pond (complete with frogs!) in which the children can do pond dipping, as well as a wormery, ladybird house, bird boxes, bat house, insect homes and much, much more. We also have lots of new equipment, including pond dipping nets, butterfly nets and binoculars, to name but a few. The new pond and wildlife area, and all its wonderful equipment, will be used over the coming years by the children and local community. Katie recently came to officially open the area, with the help of Mrs Boucher, Head-teacher, and a group of our Year Three children.

Children took part in activities that involved handling real life objects, before then reconstructing them in drawings, and sieving soil taken from the site to reveal secrets about the time. All the children had a brilliant day, and can't wait to find out more about this exciting period of history.

HORSEY FORT Photo credit: Paul Donohoe, source www.trigpointing.co.uk

Before the Civil War, Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) was a yeoman farmer near Huntingdon. He spent time with a friend from Ramsey, and would sail to Peterborough Market past Horsey Hill and Stanground. Later, when looking for places to build defences to protect the Fens, Cromwell knew about the junction of the old course of the River Nene and Cnut’s Dyke at Horsey – anyone getting into the waterways at this point and travelling across the Great Mere to Ramsey would have had only a short march to Cromwell’s headquarters at Huntingdon. The fort was completed in 1642 in a five-sided shape – the only pentagonal fort in England – with a gun bastion at each corner, in continental style. It would have been built by soldiers called pioneers under the orders of civilian engineers; a Dutchman called Rostworm was probably responsible for the construction of Horsey Fort. There was a recruitment shortage for pioneers, as the job meant hard labour and possibly work under fire, armed only with a spade! Eventually, an

On the eastern edge of the parish of Stanground stands the site of a Civil War fort now known as Horsey Toll.

Act of Parliament was passed which said that whenever fortifications were to be built, the local population must assist in the construction, with a fine of one shilling per day for noncompliance. At a time when weekly pay was mere pennies, villagers from Stanground no doubt helped to build Horsey Fort. They used tools stamped with a picture of a gallows, to explain the punishment for stealing them. The fort would have housed a company of infantry (111 men with officers), plus, undoubtedly, a troop of dragoons (mounted infantry), an artillery sergeant and officer, and a drummer to relay battlefield commands. There would have been a small cannon at each of the five bastions, probably a Falconett 1.5 pounder, with a crew of three to four men per gun. Civil War skirmishes took place up and down the country, but in the end Horsey was never attacked. The closest it came was in June 1644, when the King’s Army sacked Stamford and began moving towards Peterborough. The Earl of Manchester

The fort would have housed a company of infantry (111 men with officers) reinforced the garrison at Horsey with three hundred additional troops and horse. However, the Kings Army instead swung east and besieged Croyland, damaging the Abbey with their cannon. Eventually, the men of both armies were needed to gather the harvest, and both the siege and the reinforcements at Horsey were ended. Although the fort itself is long gone, traces of its activity still remain inside the church at Stanground, which was vandalised by Parliamentarian troops as part of a national campaign of religious defacement. Our Teaching School Alliance, based in Fenland, has vacancies to start primary or secondary teacher training in September 2017. Applications can be made from October 2016 through www.ucas.com If you have (or will have) a degree and are interested in this exciting career opportunity, please contact Lionel Walden Primary School to find out more:

(01354) 740405 or office@lionelwalden.cambs.sch.uk Alternatively, go to www.ucas.com, choose the ‘Teacher Training’ tab, click on ‘Find a Programme’, click on the search tool and then enter ‘Lionel Walden Primary School’ as the provider (with the rest of the search fields left blank) and you will see a list of all our primary and secondary courses. These are one-year, full-time ‘School Direct’ PGCE courses which means that successful trainees will work alongside and be supported in a range of primary/secondary settings by excellent teachers with a wealth of experience and expertise – a great starting point for a successful teaching career. Like other PGCE courses, the cost to the associated University is £9000. Following successful course completion, it is extremely likely that the newly qualified teacher will be offered a job in one of our alliance schools.
