Welcome to the January edition of Discovering Whittlesea...
4
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. The festive season might be behind us, but here in Whittlesey we still have something to look forward to – the Straw Bear Festival, which this year takes place from the 13th to the 15th. I always enjoy trying to explain the festival to those from elsewhere, usually to a look of strange bemusement. I think you’ll agree, the best explanation of this very unique event is gained from experiencing it for yourself! The Straw Bear Festival isn’t the only cause for celebration this month. We recently spoke to Fontanella’s, in Market Street, about their revamped restaurant. It looks absolutely amazing, and is well worth a try if you haven’t visited already. We also hear from AA Whittlesey Computers, another successful local business with plans to expand, and there’s an important update from the Town Council about the Must Farm finds. If, like me, you felt just a tad put out by the national media coverage which described the site as being in Peterborough, you’ll be pleased to know that efforts are well underway to keep these important Whittlesey artefacts as local as possible!
Jack
As I write this introduction in December, it seems almost impossible that 2016 is practically behind us. Where has the time gone? I hope you all had a great Christmas, and are looking forward to what lies ahead in 2017.

This month’s magazine is full of great reads to kick off the New Year, including the inspirational story of a local Slimming World member, whose amazing self-transformation is bound to motivate you to reach your own resolutions over the next few months. Looking back to the past, there’s the second in Connor Martin’s fascinating series on Whittlesey and World War One, while Jennifer Barback looks at one of Whittlesey’s most familiar landmarks, the Water Tower, and the mystery surrounding when exactly it was built. I wonder if any of our readers can shed any light on this one?

Charlene's Slimming Story:
Slowly becoming myself again! Charlene, a slimmer who has transformed her life by losing three stone in 2016, is using her success to shape a whole new career in helping other people in Whittlesey to change their lives. Charlene will be running Slimming World sessions on a Wednesday evening at 5.30pm or 7.30pm, where she will help others to achieve their weight loss dreams. When Charlene started her journey a year ago, she weighed almost fifteen stone, and was really unhappy with herself. From first meeting her husband at age sixteen, and a size ten, her weight blossomed as her relationship did. She was a size fourteen when she married, a size sixteen after her first child, and a size twenty after her fourth child! The temptation of sneaking some of her children's sweets here and there was easy, and it didn't seem to matter. “It’s the kids’ stuff - who would know?” She knew! Charlene despised clothes shopping, hating what the numbers said on the hangers. She used to think, “I'll lose weight for the next big family event”, but, lacking the tools, knowledge and willpower, she never did.
Christmas and New Y ear photos were the turning point. She couldn't stand seeing the 'me' she had turned into. Whenever Charlene had asked other slimmers what their secret was, their response was always “Slimming World!” with a big cheery smile. They’d tell her how their favourite meals were all still allowed - curries, rice, burgers, chips, pastas and potatoes!
C h a rle n e at th e st a rt of h e r jou rn e y... Charlene’s now fitting back into clothes that she had to put away years ago! Furthermore, her thinking has changed. She now knows that food optimising (making better informed choices) is going to speed up her weight loss journey. It was on the fourth of January 2016 that Charlene’s Slimming World journey began, and in under a year she has lost three stone. Charlene is still on her journey, and so she can empathise with every member. “I believe in it, and I know it works! I'm about a stone away from my personal target, but I feel so much happier, healthier and much more confident.” Join Charlene on Wednesday January 4th at Childers, on Station Road, at either 5.30pm or 7.30pm, to help her celebrate a year of better food and life changes, and find out how she can offer the same and more to you.
Charlene joined her mum’s Slimming World group at Childers, and was welcomed in immediately. She couldn't believe how much she could eat, and yet still lose so much. At her first weigh-in, she lost a huge 8.5lbs. Charlene has stayed committed to the group, and learned so many tips from her new friends. They give each other the boost they need to go walking or swimming together, and get a little extra help from “Body Magic” to aid their weight loss journeys.

Do You Need to See a Podiatrist? Podiatry is simply the new name for chiropody. It is a branch of medicine devoted to the study and diagnosis, and medical treatment, of disorders of the foot, ankle, and lower leg. The name changed from chiropody to podiatry in 1993, so that the UK was in line with all other English speaking countries, in using the internationally recognised name for a foot specialist. A podiatrist will usually have attended a university for three years, to study full time for a Degree in Podiatry. Here are four reasons to see a podiatrist: 1) Give your feet an MOT – Even if your feet are in a generally good state, an appointment with a podiatrist, every so often, can help to keep your feet in tip-top condition. It’s easy to overlook problems with verrucas, cracked heels, and ingrown toenails; however, these issues can eventually result in painful conditions and infections. A podiatrist can treat a range of issues including corns, calluses, athlete’s foot, foot odour, flat feet and bunions.

3) Do you suffer from foot odour? – It’s common to suffer from foot perspiration and odours from timeto-time. However, if the problem persists, seeking expert advice and treatment from a podiatrist can help resolve the issues quickly and effectively. 4) Need footwear advice? – Feet come in all shapes and sizes. Choosing suitable footwear, somewhat, determines your long-term foot health. 2) Manage the pain in your feet – Putting up with foot pain is uncomfortable and unnecessary. A visit to your local podiatrist is all that’s needed to nurse your feet back to full health. Don’t suffer in silence with the pain of ingrown toenails, or corns and calluses. Many feel a trip to the beauty salon is all that’s needed. Covering up a fungal nail infection, with a splash of colourful polish, does not resolve the underlying problem.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better
Breathing – It’s Not Just About Oxygen We all understand breathing involves taking in oxygen, but is that its only role? Interestingly, the answer is no. Intrigued? Read on… Removing carbon dioxide Our breathing rate is determined by our need to remove carbon dioxide from our bodies, not our need for oxygen. Our blood always contains excess oxygen, such that we only use a small proportion during our daily activities. However, the accumulation of waste gases produced by our cells (e.g. carbon dioxide) is something we cannot tolerate, as it makes our blood more acidic. Breathing removes carbon dioxide, and thus our breathing rate is dependent on how much we need to remove.
Returning blood back to our hearts Interestingly, breathing is the second most important reason (the first is obviously the heart) for our blood flow. If it was not for breathing, our blood would form pools in our legs! The heart pushes the blood around the body, whilst breathing sucks the blood back up. Breathing achieves this by creating pressure differentials in the body, in a similar fashion to how we suck fluid up through a straw.
Strengthening heart beats The heart is securely fastened within the ribcage via various attachments to the surrounding skeletal
and muscular structures. One of these structures is the diaphragm. When the diaphragm moves (i.e. descends during breathing), it pulls the bottom part of the heart with it. Therefore the chambers of the heart get stretched, which makes the contraction stronger.
Mobilising our organs Directly beneath our diaphragm are our abdominal organs (e.g. stomach, liver, etc). Therefore, if our diaphragm descends and rises at a set frequency (i.e. breathing), it creates a rhythmical wave which travels through our organs. This motion maintains our organs’ mobility and hence health.
Emotion Behavioural breathing is how our breathing responds to changes in our emotions, for example, when we are nervous, or angry etc. The reverse is also true, i.e. breathing can alter our emotions. A good example is when parents instruct their upset children to take deep breaths in an attempt to calm them down. It is this link between breathing and emotion which the parents are using.

What is Shingles? Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is an infection of a nerve and the skin around it. It's caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox. It is estimated that around one in every four people will have at least one episode of shingles during their life. Symptoms The main symptom of shingles is pain, followed by a rash that develops into itchy blisters, similar in appearance to chickenpox. New blisters may appear for up to a week, but a few days after appearing they become yellowish in colour, before flattening and drying out. Scabs then form where the blisters were, which may leave some slight scarring and loss of skin pigment.
You can have the shingles vaccination at any time of year, though many people will find it convenient to have it at the same time as their annual flu vaccination. The New Queen Street Surgery sends out reminders to those patients who are eligible to have the vaccine. If you receive an invitation and you want the vaccine, then please make an appointment to see one of our nurses.
The pain may be a constant, dull or burning sensation, and can vary in intensity. You may have sharp stabbing pains from time to time, and the affected area of skin will usually be tender. In some cases, shingles may cause some early symptoms that develop a few days before the painful rash first appears. Who can have the shingles vaccine? Since September 1st 2016, the shingles vaccine has been offered routinely to people aged 70 and, as a catch-up, to those aged 78. You become eligible for the vaccine on the first day of September 2016 after you've turned 70 or 78. In addition, anyone who was eligible for immunisation in the previous three years of the programme, but missed out on their shingles vaccination, remains eligible until their 80th birthday. This includes: • People aged 71, 72 and 73 on September 1st 2016 • People aged 79 on September 1st 2016 The shingles vaccine is not available on the NHS to anyone aged 80 and over, as it seems to be less effective in this age group.

| A Moment with Reverend Nigel January is here again, and the start of the New Year. It is a time for new beginnings, often seen in our desire to make New Year’s resolutions. These are soon made, often with good intention, but maybe don’t last all that long. We are not limited as to how many new beginnings we can have. We have just celebrated Christmas. In the birth of Jesus, God marks a new beginning with his people. He makes a promise that no matter how many times we fall short, we can always start again; whether we fail in our duties to the God who created us, or in our relationships with each other.

Forgiveness and a new start lie at the heart of the Christian message. It is the Good News that Jesus brought in his birth, life, death and resurrection. We can share this message, and live better lives with God and each other. As the New Year comes around, do take the opportunity to look honestly at your life, see where you need to start again, face the challenge of a new beginning, and ask God to be with you. This year may see the start of a new life with the birth of a child, or a wedding marking a new relationship. The Church helps celebrate these events with Baptism and marriage. Please feel free to discuss with me either one, or both, of these celebrations. There is no obligation, and it may open up other new pathways. Thank you for all your support in 2016, and I look forward to being with you whatever 2017 brings. May God bless you all in this New Year.

New Road Primary School’s 2016/17 Sporting Calendar… So Far! Twenty children from Years Four, Five and Six, divided into two teams, recently competed in the Level One Tag Rugby competition, organised by Janette Bowden (PE Coordinator), Pete Ingham (Park Lane) and Hayley Cradock (AJS). Level One is for inter-school competition, and the New Road teams came fourth and fifth. They then took one team of twelve children from the above group to the County Level Two Tag Rugby, where, on November 4th in the pouring rain, they won the Small Schools Competition! This qualifies them for the hugely exciting Level Three County Competition, to be held in St Ives in March 2017. These sporting events have given the children self belief and confidence, and they are very pleased with their gold medals! Finally, on November 17th, they took part in a football five-a-side competiion at Sir Harry Smith Community College (pictured). This event was organised by the FA Trust and Whittlesey Town Council.

Keeping Bronze Age Artefacts is a Must Following the Bronze Age finds at Must Farm, Whittlesey, representatives from Peterborough Vivacity made a recent presentation to Whittlesey Town Council, which basically advocated transferring many of the artefacts found at Must Farm to the Bronze Age Centre at Flag Fen. The Town Council considered this situation to be unacceptable, and I then entered into discussions with our Mayor, Cllr Alex Miscandlon, on finding a solution which would give Whittlesey a greater profile in this immensely important project. Thanks to a considerable amount of hard work behind the scenes by Cllr Miscandlon, a meeting was eventually arranged with Gillian Beasley, Chief Executive of Peterborough City and Cambridgeshire County Councils, at which both myself and Cllr Eamonn Dorling, as Chairman of WTC Finance and Policy Committee, were present.
County and Peterborough City Councils, Historic England, The British Museum, Peterborough Vivacity, the Arts Council and Forterra (Hanson Brick). The object of the consortium is to submit a solid case for Heritage Funding by the end of 2017, to enable a permanent Heritage Centre to be built to house the Must Farm and other important local historical items. The consortium will be chaired by Gillian Beasley, and the respective Peterborough and North East Cambridgeshire MPs, Stewart Jackson and Steve Barclay, will be kept fully informed.

Fenland Twinning Association You may ask, what is the Fenland Twinning Association, and what does it do?
F
enland District Council has a number of twinning arrangements with areas across the world. They include the areas of Stadt Nettetal, in Germany, and the Sunshine Coast in Australia. These twinning arrangements take a number of guises, from business links to cultural and exchange visits.
Our closest links at present are with Stadt Nettetal, which take the form of exchange visits every two years. However, we are increasingly keen to encourage greater youth involvement in twinning. How can you help? We as an organisation are always looking for people to become involved with the activities. Primarily, this involves hosting families or individuals when they visit Fenland, participating in the civic events that take place during this time, and being willing to take part in the reciprocal visits. A great number of lasting friendships have been established as a result of these trips. If you are interested in the cultural links that being a member of the Fenland Twinning Association brings, contact Councillor Mike Cornwell on 01354 653757, or come along to our AGM at Fenland Hall on January 25th 2017, at 6.00pm. Children Have a Ball with Visit from Top Referee
W
hittlesey was recently visited by a top FIFA and Premiership football referee. Craig Pawson, who referees international matches and top teams in England, was on hand to referee and present medals to eight teams representing New Road, Park Lane, Alderman Jacobs and Coates primary schools. Pawson was in Whittlesey as part of a full day of events, and the visit to Sir Harry Smith Community College was made possible by the support of Whittlesey Town Council (with help from the Tesco fund), which was applied for by event organiser Robert Windle, who had been working in the schools for the previous five weeks. Representing the Council was Town Councillor Eamonn Dorling, who was delighted with the event and the attitude of all those who took part. Thanks also go to the hosts, Sir Harry Smith Community College, and the other young referees who helped out by officiating.
Photos show all the players with their medals, and Craig Pawson leading out two girls’ teams just before kick-off. Photos courtesy of RWT Photography.
Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service: January 2017 Bulletin Looking for something new to do in 2017? Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for volunteers in your area to join our successful Community Champion scheme. Community Champions encourage local residents to carry out fire safety checks in their homes, visit community groups, and educate about fire safety and escape plans. We will train you, give you a uniform and provide you with a wide range of activities to choose from. No previous qualifications or specific skills are needed, as CFRS is always seeking people from diverse backgrounds. The scheme is run by the charity Groundwork, on behalf of CFRS. To find out more about the Community Champions scheme, contact Katie Dean on 01480 587140/07736 132870, or email katie.dean@groundwork.org.uk. Also, don’t forget to make a New Year’s Resolution to test your smoke alarm, and that of your elderly relatives, once a month, by pressing the ‘test’ button on the device. To find out if you are eligible for a free home fire safety check, please visit our website. | Your Garden
January Gardening Tips It’s the start of a brand new year! It’s time to get ordering from the seed catalogues, and begin making the decisions on what to grow, and where, in the coming year. •
Plan your vegetable plot for this year to ensure good crop rotation, and prevent pests and diseases building up in the soil. If you'd like to start growing your own fruit, now is the time to get your fruit trees and bushes planted.
•
The days are still too short and cold to even think of sowing seeds, but towards the end of the month a few sowings of onions, lettuce, peas, broad beans, radish and early carrots can be made under protection. Temperatures can get quite high, so give a little air to the transplanted lettuce plants on warm days, closing down early in the afternoon. Seed potatoes will be available from this month. Keep harvesting Brussels sprouts, cabbages, leeks and parsnips.
•
Prune your apple or pear tree in winter, when the leaves are off the tree. Only prune about 15% of the canopy in one year, and don’t prune plums in winter, as it increases the risk of infection by silver leaf disease. Prune your gooseberries, redcurrants and whitecurrants to keep an open-centred bush with around eight to ten main branches. Prune last year’s growth off the main stems by about a half, and continue to plant raspberry canes on sunny sites with
free-draining soil. Strawberry runners can be potted under glass to start forcing.
•
Prune your wisteria plant now, cutting back summer side-shoots to two or three buds. Also prune rose bushes, whilst they are dormant. Cut back to just above a bud, and remove any crossing or dead branches. Now is also the time to plant new roses in a sunny position, ready for spectacular summer colour.
• Sweet peas can be sown this month; there are many varieties, with strong scents, for a beautiful display in the summer months. • Ensure protective fleece is still in place on tender plants overwintering outdoors. • Plant spring flowering bulbs such as Galanthus (snowdrops), Eranthis (aconites) and Iris (dwarf iris) to continue the winter interest into spring. • Avoid walking on your lawn when it is covered by heavy frost or snow, as this will damage the grass beneath. • Finally, don’t forget the birds in your garden. Replenish their feeders, and make sure their water sources aren’t frozen.

| A word from... Your Mayor Alex Miscandlon Hello everybody. As we leave 2016 behind, we look back on a year of highlights... The Festival was the best ever, and its crowning glory was the flypasts. The displays were fantastic, and having spoken to out of town visitors, they all said that they would definitely be back next year – so well done to Whittlesey, and keep up the good work! During the year, I visited all the schools to present prizes or awards for achievements. Well done to all the winners of these honours. The music festivals on the Market Place showed that Whittlesey has good reason to be proud. Once again, people came from far and wide to enjoy the variety of music on offer. Well done to the organising team. Remembrance Day was also a day for Whittlesey to be proud of. The proof of this was in the attendance, and variety of age groups who took part.
From the youngest to the oldest, you all did Whittlesey proud. I spoke to the attending dignitaries, and they were all heartened by the display of respect shown by all.
Alex Mi sca ndlon
Due to editorial constraints (as this article is being written at the beginning of December), I am unable to comment on the Extravaganza, but will do so next month. In signing off for 2016 on behalf of myself, my wife and fellow Councillors, I wish everyone all the best for the New Year. Regards, Councillor Alex Miscandlon, Mayor of Whittlesey

The Future’s Bright for Whittlesey’s Christmas Lights As Christmas approached at the end of 2016, local residents were in wide agreement that Whittlesey’s lights display was the town’s best ever. The array of festive illuminations included a host of new and renovated decorations, made possible by the fundraising efforts of local people over the past year. Following a general feeling amongst local people last year that the lights could do with some rejuvenation, over £3000 was raised to enable the Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee to carry on
22

their brilliant work. The committee works extremely hard to put on a fantastic display each year, and many of its members have been lending a hand for years. A huge thank you and well done to all involved – the lights looked fantastic! The Whittlesey and Community Facebook page, which has over five thousand members, is once again running an appeal to raise money for the lights, and make 2017’s display even better. You can find more information, including on how to donate, by visiting the page.

A New Year for Whittlesey Wind Ensemble
W
ith the start of a new year, we are thinking about a Spring Concert on May 19th, to be held at the Methodist/United Reform Church, in Queen Street, Whittlesey. Therefore, during this month, we will be planning the type of music we want to play, deciding on a programme, and possibly looking to buy new music. It would be great to showcase our local talent with some solo work and ensemble pieces.
The start of the year is a great time to join the band - maybe it's even a New Year’s resolution! We've been thrilled to welcome several new

Crafting New Skills
A group of people with a learning disability have combined their love of crafting with their ambition to gain employment skills, by launching a new craft shop in Whittlesey town centre, in partnership with Thera East Anglia. The shop, called 82 Crafts and Creations, is at 3 Eastgate Mews, and opens Monday to Saturday, 9.30am until 3.30pm. The group is supported by Thera East Anglia, a non-profit organisation which supports people with a learning disability. They’ve played a key role in getting the shop ready for its launch, which took place on Friday December 9th 2016. As well as receiving payment for sales of their own items, the group has the opportunity to develop their work skills, and has also set up business agreements with local crafters, who can sell their own products in the shop.
30
D I S C O V E R I N G
The shop is operating on a non-profit basis, but any profits made will be re-invested into the business to provide more work-based opportunities for people with learning disabilities. The group has been overwhelmed by the support of Whittlesey community, and is extremely excited about what the future holds. For more information about the venture, email craftsandcreations@thera.co.uk, or call 07912 558 446.

What Are Your Hopes For 2017? Will they be forgotten by the end of January, because nothing constructive has been done about them? Or, are you afraid of even daring to hope, for fear of being let down? A firm of American architects hoped their new skyscraper would receive high acclaim. Unfortunately, while everyone appreciated the design, those working in the upper section of the 59-storey building complained of upset stomachs, as the building swayed in the wind. While it’s perfectly safe and normal for a tall building to sway in this way, this problem had to be resolved for their hopes to be realised. The ultimate solution was a machine called a ‘tuned mass damper’, a 410 tonne block of concrete, attached to huge springs and floating on a film of oil. When the building swayed, the block’s inertia worked to dampen the movement, and calm people’s fears and upset stomachs.
Having hope is no guarantee that problems will never seek to hinder them becoming a reality. Neither will our hopes automatically happen without our willingness to become practically involved in challenging any hindrances threatening them. When seeking to help those who have lost all sense of hope, I usually experience two emotions. One is sadness, at seeing anyone facing life this way, and the other is a sense of challenge, to think outside the box and help them turn this situation around. No one should have to live without hope for the future. The Bible gives us wise guidance for when problems seek to challenge our hopes: Lord, you are my hiding place and my shield: I will hope in your word. Let us walk together towards a brighter, more hopeful future.

| Local History
by Jennifer Barback, Curator of Whittlesey Museum
THE WHITTLESEY WATER TOWER Shrouded in ripped netting on the incoming Peterborough Road, the looming concrete water tower with a children’s play area dwarfed in its shadow is a well-known Whittlesey landmark. The original purpose of the tower was to store a substantial volume of water high above the ground, so that gravity could push it along the mains system at high pressure, and keep the water moving to nearby houses. The tower was fed by Fletton boreholes, and water connections were made by F. Argyle of Nuneaton, who later married and settled in Whittlesey. Despite the claims made by generations of local children, unlocking the door at the base of the tower would not instantly flood the park and neighbouring street – the tower is mostly empty inside, apart from a staircase, with the water stored in a relatively small tank (capacity 568 cubic metres) at the very top. The bottom of the tank was higher than the level of the small windows set into the side of the tower. Water towers of this period generally held approximately one day’s water supply for the immediate area. There is some debate about when the Whittlesey water tower was built. The tower is named on the 1952 OS map, and former owners Anglian Water believe it to be of “Post War” construction. It is not mentioned in the 1939 Invasion Plan for Whittlesey,

which lists defence points, wells and other water supplies to be used in the case of Nazi occupation. It also does not appear on the 1938 OS map of Whittlesey. However, the attached photograph from the Whittlesey Museum archive claims to show the tower being built, and mains water brought into the town, around 1933. The tower was built by a firm named Kaufmans, which may also suggest a pre-war date. The recreation ground at the foot of the water tower was opened soon after the tower was built. The play equipment was briefly moved to the green on Snoots Road, but later returned to the tower by public demand. The site was one of the earliest playgrounds in Whittlesey, along with the recreation ground at Station Road, and the two were the only “equipped play areas” available in Whittlesey throughout the 1940s and 1950s. During the 1960s/70s there was a slide and swings behind the tower, with a seesaw and roundabout in front on the road side; all made from steel and wood, with only muddy ground beneath them.

Despite the claims made by generations of local children, unlocking the door at the base of the tower would not instantly flood the park and neighbouring street The tower was finally taken out of service during the 1990s. It was auctioned at the Café Royal, in London’s Regent Street, in 2008, with a guide price of £30,000, and - despite speculation that it might be developed into a café or private home - it is now used only as a high point in the flat Fen to host mobile phone masts. The land and play area are maintained by Fenland District Council. Customer Service is the Key to Success for AA Whittlesey Computers AA Whittlesey Computers Ltd is proud to announce that during the first week of January, they will be moving to their new offices at 26 High Causeway, PE7 1AJ (formerly occupied by Sharman Quinney). Owner Len explains the reason behind the move: “Due to the level of support I have received from the residents of Whittlesey in using my services, I felt able to take the opportunity to expand the services I offer, and also to create two new jobs – one a fulltime role, and the other a Saturday role (now filled by Ryan and Oliver).” He plans to continue offering the same level of service and support to existing and new customers, whilst at the same time expanding to sell new and nearly-new laptops and towers, as well as monitors, printers and other accessories.
Len wishes to express his thanks to all past customers, without whose support he would be unable to expand his business as he intends. To celebrate the move, throughout January, Len is offering a 20% discount on labour costs for all work undertaken, for everyone who mentions this advert. Also coming in January will be a website, where you’ll be able to find all the latest offers, along with a Facebook page. This will be shortly followed by an ‘Internet Café’ – though the focus will be more on the internet than the café! Len, Ryan and Oliver look forward to seeing you in their new office in January.
Len has an extensive and varied background in business, details of which are set out at LinkedIn – he can be Googled as Len Stanley, Peterborough. His years of experience have taught him two key rules when it comes to business, and he intends to continue following them:
Rule 1: The customer is always right Rule 2: When the customer is wrong, see Rule 1! 36

An Amazing Act of Kindness by Local Student
O
n Friday November 25th, Year Ten students at Sir Harry Smith Community College gathered for a most unusual assembly – they were watching as fellow pupil Yazmin Hills had her head shaved for charity. Our Yazmin, from Coates, was inspired to raise money for Cody Stanier, a local toddler who suffers from an extremely rare genetic condition. Cody was born on December 6th 2013, and after his parents noticed problems with his feeding, tests at Addenbrookes Hospital showed that he suffered from a rare chromosome condition. This has meant that Cody has a low weight, and at the age of three, is unable to talk. However, September 2016 saw him hit a huge milestone when he took his first steps. Cody is currently awaiting an operation to remove his tonsils and relocate his front saliva glands, which will hopefully aid his feeding issues and sleep apnoea. His progression has been made possible by the amazing team of professionals who support him, and by the very kind donations which have provided the equipment needed to aid his development. Yazmin’s hair has been sent to the Little Princess Trust, where it will be used to make wigs for children going through cancer treatment, while the money she raised through sponsorship will go towards the provision of more essential resources and equipment for Cody and his family.

Fontanella’s, in Market Street, has just reopened following an extensive revamp. We spoke to owner Luca about the changes that have been made, and what he has in store for customers as we head into the New Year. The restaurant looks great! How long have you been running it? We’ll have been open six years in February. I started the business when I was twenty, with support from my father, Enzo, who has a wealth of experience in the restaurant trade, and other family who come to help. What changes have you made? We’ve extended the restaurant by moving the kitchen to the back of the building, where we previously had an outdoor seating area. This has more than doubled the dining space, which means we can now accommodate more customers. We felt the restaurant could do with a refresh after six years, so we’ve also updated the décor and fittings. Have you got any other plans in the pipeline? We offer an extremely popular evening meal menu, from which customers can choose a range of three courses, including daily desserts, for just £19.95. We were regularly fully booked due to the success of these meals, and so we’ve simply extended the café to a restaurant in order to cater for the demand. We can now welcome more diners, and we hope to build on the existing success of the evening menu even more in 2017.

Vaccinations Vaccinations for your four-legged friends are required to help them live healthy and happy lives. It’s not only dogs and cats that need vaccinating, but rabbits and ferrets too. Vaccines stimulate the animal’s immune system, so if your pet is ever exposed to the actual disease, their immune system will be better able to recognise and fight it. In cats, an annual vaccine to follow up the initial course is recommended. This covers them against many diseases, such as Feline Enteritis (Panleukopaenia), a highly infectious gastrointestinal disease which can cause, vomiting, diarrhoea and ultimately death. Feline viral Rhinotracheitis and Calicivirus, often referred to as “cat flu”, are common, and symptoms include sneezing, nasal discharge, coughing and conjunctivitis. Feline Leukaemia virus is an incurable disease which breaks down the immune system, and is passed on by feline bodily fluids such as blood, saliva and urine. Vaccination is particularly important if your cat goes outside, but indoor cats are also at risk as some of these diseases can be transmitted on your clothing or shoes.
threatening diseases such as Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza and Leptospirosis. These diseases are not too commonly seen these days - thanks to widespread vaccinating - but there is always a danger that they could be contracted if a pet is unvaccinated. In rabbits, annual vaccinations are extremely important. It prevents them from the potentially fatal diseases Myxomatosis and Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease. Both diseases can be spread by direct contact, or indirectly by biting and blood sucking insects such as mosquitos. Symptoms include puffy, swollen eyes, swollen genitals, and difficulty eating and drinking, eventually followed by death. This is the same disease that you may encounter in wild rabbits. You never know when or where your pet may be exposed to these nasty diseases, so make it a priority to get them vaccinated. Prevention is far better than cure.
In dogs, an initial course of two vaccines (or three if the Kennel Cough vaccine is required,) is necessary, followed by an annual vaccination. These vaccinations are necessary to prevent life-

What is a listed building? A listed building is one of special historical and architectural interest, and cannot be altered or demolished without special permission from the local planning authority. Historic England estimates that there are around 500,000 listed buildings in England, though the exact number is unknown because in some cases – for instance, a row of terraced houses – several individual units are covered in one listing. A limited number of “ancient monuments” were given protection under the Ancient Monuments Protection Act of 1882, but the government was generally reluctant to impose restrictions on private owners regarding the use of their own property. The impact of German bombing during World War Two encouraged greater protection of significant buildings, and the basis of the modern listing system came in the 1947 Town and Country Planning Act, which also established the requirement for planning permission.
How are listed buildings categorised? There are three categories of listed buildings:
Buildings are listed based on a number of factors, including age and rarity, appearance and national interest. Buildings which are not considered noteworthy individually, but which form part of a group or contribute to the overall character of an area, are often given looser protection by being designated part of a Conservation Area. Stamford was the first Conservation Area to be designated in Britain, in 1967.
Listed buildings in Whittlesey The Whittlesey Conservation Area was first designated in 1972, and significantly extended ten years later. It chiefly covers the town centre, stretching south to the Briggate river and west to the Horsegate area, with a separate, smaller area covering the predominantly residential areas of Claygate, Delph Street, High Causeway and Gracious Street to the north of the centre.
• Grade I buildings are of exceptional interest, and as such are rare. Only 2.5% of listed buildings are Grade I. • Grade II* buildings are particularly important buildings of more than special interest. 5.5% of listed buildings fall into this category. • Grade II buildings are of special interest, and account for 92% of listed buildings.
Information from www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk (which includes a full list of the listed buildings in each parish) and www.historicengland.org.uk.

There are a total of sixty five listed buildings within Whittlesey’s Conservation Area. Of these, St. Mary’s Church is the only one with Grade I status, while another six (including St. Andrew’s Church and the Buttercross) are Grade II*. These seven buildings were amongst the first in the town to be given official protection, receiving listed status in August 1950. With parts dating back to the fifteenth century, the Manor House is the oldest domestic building in Whittlesey. Some listed buildings, such as the windmill in West End and buildings in Whittlesey Cemetery, fall outside of the Conservation Area, while examples also exist in Eastrea, Coates, Eldernell and Pondersbridge. It is not only buildings which are given listed status; a number of other structures such as bridges, war memorials, and sculptures are also eligible for listing - The Beatles’ Abbey Road pedestrian crossing even received Grade II status in 2010!. Examples in Whittlesey include the mud wall in West End; the surviving walls, gateposts and piers of the 17th century Portland House (in today’s Portland Place), which burnt down in the late 1940s; and the tomb of Sir Harry Smith, which was listed in 2000. Given the huge number of old and unique buildings in
Pictured right: The Buttercross dates back to the 17th century. Centre: Wilderness House, one of six Whittlesey buildings given Grade II* status on August 11th 1950. Bottom: The Manor House, on the west side of Station Road, has parts dating back to the 1400s.
Whittlesey, it perhaps seems surprising that so few have the official protection of listed status. Buildings which are not listed, but still considered important, are designated “Buildings of Local Interest”, and as such still receive special consideration when changes or demolition are proposed. A 2007 review of the Whittlesey Conservation Area proposed a number of additions to the list of Buildings of Local Interest, including the Gracious Street Baptist Chapel, former Broad Street School and the now redundant Bricklayer’s Arms. Despite the introduction of protection for historic structures in 1947, the following decades saw the losses of many buildings which would today be unthinkable. Though some of Whittlesey’s listed buildings received such status in 1950, a scan through the full register of the town’s protected buildings shows that most were added in the 1980s. A large section of Peterborough’s historic centre was lost to the construction of the Queensgate shopping centre, which opened in 1982, while in Whittlesey, the Windmill Street Baptist Chapel (built in 1830 and demolished in 1981) and The Priory (a mid-17th century farmhouse demolished in 1970) are just two examples of buildings that would undoubtedly be protected today.

KEEP ON SINGING
I
This month we feature two of the local adult singing groups in Whittlesey...
f you attended the Jenner and St Mary’s Church fundraising performances in September, you would have seen the Whittlesey Singers and Whittlesey Warblers - two of the town’s vocal/harmony singing groups. The Whittlesey Singers were formed to provide an outlet for people who enjoy singing songs from all genres. They meet on a Monday afternoon at St Andrew’s Hall, and the sessions regularly attract over thirty singers. With their leader and pianist Paul Turner, the group has gone from strength to strength. They perform at fetes and events with a mix of ages, singing show tunes and standards, plus the occasional pop classic. Contact Gary Stewart on 01733 204575 for further information.
Whittlesey Warblers is a group within the U3A (University of the Third Age), a national network of educational, creative, leisure and social activities organised for, and by, its retired or semi-retired members. The singing group, which meets on Wednesday afternoons, sings songs in the round, traditional folk, music from all genres, and multipart harmony. Their first public performance was in December 2015 and they have been increasing their repertoire since, having performed at the Whittlesey Festival and other fundraising events during this year. Contact Theresa Shiels on 01733 688537 for further information. Open Mic and event listings can be found at: www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm

A man walks in to a pub…
I
have been asked to write a follow up, so here goes!
A woman walks in to a pub - she declares that she has an inheritance of £30,000, and is wondering what to do with it. She talks to the first man at the bar, who without hesitation, says that she should use it to pay off her mortgage, to reduce her expenditure. She has a mortgage - so good thinking - but she is not convinced.
interest rates are higher than they currently are, and does not know how much she may or may not contribute to an ISA. The third man does not know whether she has a current pension arrangement, what sort it is, or how much she can add.
The second man at the bar suggests that she invests in a cash ISA, so that any interest is free of tax. He’s on the right lines, but he has missed a couple of very important aspects.
If you are fortunate enough to come across a similar situation, stop and think about listening to some professional advice, because expensive mistakes can be difficult to get out of – the right advice can last a lifetime. Contact me for a free initial consultation (mine is a white coffee with no sugar!).
She turns to the third man and asks what he would suggest. He says that she should top up her pension. This is possibly the most tax efficient suggestion, but should the tax tail be wagging the dog, as the expression goes? The bar tender comes to her rescue, saying she ought to talk to the person sitting behind her, because he is an independent financial adviser. He will take a wider view of her aims and circumstances before making a recommendation. You see, until the first man understands the details of her mortgage arrangement, he has no way of knowing whether it makes sense to use this asset in that way. The second man does not understand how much interest may be earned in a year before it becomes subject to tax, may have a view that

The Great War in Whittlesey
PART 2: the walton brothers Another month has come and gone, and as people are celebrating across the town, we remember the men on the Western Front a hundred years ago, and the people of Whittlesey, who were in a mood completely different from today’s. The opening month of 1917 brought a chill on the Western Front, with the battlefields giving way to icy blasts. The battles on the fronts slowed down, so much so, that January 1917 was one of the only months of the war in which the men of Whittlesey suffered no fatalities. However, this month I would like to focus on three Whittlesey brothers who all lost their lives to the Great War: Charles Francis Walton, George William Walton and William George Walton. All three were sons of Benjamin Walton, and were all born in Whittlesey. George William Walton enlisted as a private in the Royal Marine Light Infantry, aboard HMS Hawke. He was already part of the infantry when war was declared on the fourth of August 1914. Before war broke out,

George and his wife had moved to Kent to enjoy a more exciting lifestyle. However, not long after he went to fight, George was killed by a shell on October 15th 1914, leaving behind his wife, Alice Walton, of 9 Bedford Road, Southborough, Kent. His body was laid to rest at Chatham Naval Memorial in Kent, away from his hometown of Whittlesey. His brother, William George Walton, became a private of the East Yorkshire regiment, and was shipped out to the Western Front. William was discharged after an injury in the leg on March 12th 1915, and returned home to his hometown of Whittlesey. However, he died of tuberculosis on April 16th 1917, at the young age of thirty four. His body was returned home to Whittlesey, where his family chose for him to be laid to rest in the cemetery.

The final brother, Charles Francis Walton, was the only one not to have his body returned to the United Kingdom. Charles joined the Cambridgeshire regiment after conscription was introduced in the Military Service Act of 1916. His division was ordered to go “over the top” on September 26th 1917, and was gunned down by the German forces across No Man’s Land. His body was never delivered back to his home nation like his brothers’, and he was buried at the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium. He died not knowing his last brother had lost his life, not due to war, but to tuberculosis. It is a stark reminder that disease – like TB, and the Spanish Influenza of 1918 – killed more than the war. Sources: Commonwealth War Graves Commission, British Library and local newspaper.

An Egg-citing Time at Park Lane Year Five pupils were excited to learn all about life cycles, and to introduce the new additions to their year group. Madeline, from the Happy Chick Company, brought in eleven eggs for the children to hatch as part of their “Beast Creator” topic. We were lucky enough to have ten eggs hatch in total. Half of the chicks were moved to a brooder box, and the others were left in the incubator to keep the newest arrival company. The latest arrival struggled out of its shell just as the children were about to go home! Chicks are very social animals, and it would have been cruel to leave just one in the brooder box on its own. A few days later, the children were excited to finally get the chance to hold the chicks. Mrs Gregory showed them how to hold them gently and carefully, and the chicks soon got used to the children. If you hold them on their back, they just go to sleep! Lorraine Quince, IT Support/Communications Coordinator at the school, said, "Hatching eggs in school is not only a fantastic learning experience for the children, but it also creates a real sense of community. Children in all other year groups have visited Year Five, and have been fascinated to watch the chicks hatch and grow."
Around the World at AJS At Alderman Jacobs School (Academy Trust), we dedicate three days of the year to extending the children’s experience of the world. We collapse the timetable for the whole school, and split the school into family groups. The children then take it in turns to visit one of our twenty one classes, each of which is named after a different country, reflecting the seven continents of the world. Each teacher then produces a range of activities for the children relating to their country, which enhance the children’s experience. On our last 'Passport Day', the children across school also listened to a story linked to their country to help extend their experience of books. “Passport Day is one of my favourite days in school, as I get to work with different children in school, and I get to help them with the sticky bits!” said one pupil. In the picture you can see some of our children making rockets while visiting 'USA'.
The last day with the chicks was soon upon us they had grown so much, and become really noisy (especially after they had eaten their food!). We had also noticed how their wings were now almost completely covered with feathers. The chicks have all gone to a local small holder, who will continue to let them all grow – boys as well as girls – and guarantees the boys at least nine months.
