Interesting articles to help you understand your body better
The Process of Wound Healing The event
The scab
This could be anything, from a trauma to a sudden movement. The key point here is that a tissue is damaged. As blood vessels and nerves live very close to all tissues, it is likely that these will be damaged too.
We are all familiar with the word “scab, though the correct term is granulation tissue.
The plug When tissues are damaged, they will tear blood vessels, thus allowing blood to escape. If this is not dealt with quickly, we will see swelling in the area. Within our blood live cells called platelets, which normally remain dissolved in the blood, but become insoluble and sticky when they come into contact with damaged blood vessels. They stick together, forming a net which catches all the other substances floating in the blood. Soon, the net has caught enough substances to create a blockage, plugging the torn blood vessel and stopping further blood loss.
Swelling The plug creates a blockage and thus a back pressure. This, combined with various chemicals released by the damaged tissues, causes the local blood vessels to expand. As the vessels expand, certain cells are able to migrate through the vessel walls and onto the damaged site. The damaged tissue releases various markers which guide them. The cells consist of white blood cells, various growth hormones and chemicals that promote further inflammation and pain. We need this pain so we can acknowledge the damage and take steps to stop it. The release of these cells comes with the release of water, which is why we see swelling.
The granulation tissue is a general mixture of pre-mature tissue and temporary blood vessels. Both grow into the area because of the release of growth hormones mentioned earlier. We need the extra temporary blood vessels to feed the new growing tissue. The tissue acts as a filler, plugging the gap within the wound. Meanwhile, the cells at the periphery of the wound will multiply inwards and pull the two ends together. We now have the hole in the middle of the wound being filled, as well as the two ends being pulled together. Unfortunately, the more complex structures such as glands and contractile tissue are difficult to replicate, and this is why repaired tissue is not as strong or as functional as the original.
Re-organising Once everything is in place, the body can take its time to reorganise everything. This process is the longest step to recovery, taking anywhere between one and twenty four months. It is therefore important to return to activity gradually. In summary, wound healing is a repair process in which the body is trying to fashion a tissue of a similar quality, but not an exact replica of the original. The replacement tissue won’t be 100% as strong as the original, and, invariably, the older we are and the more health problems we face, the further from 100% we will be. However, the vast majority will be above 80% - that is how clever our bodies are.

By March Podiatry Practice Pregnancy yoga classes and “KG Hypnobirthing” classes come to Cambridgeshire from February! We are delighted to welcome Karen Marshall, the midwife from “Blossoming Bumps to Babies”, who is trained to teach both exciting new services, to help new mums-to- be and their partners. THE PREGNANCY YOGA classes will allow the mums to practise yoga techniques, poses and breathing exercises, and to embrace the changes in their bodies. It will also provide you with a social network of other mums in your local area. Each class will end with a restorative relaxation, which will provide you with a space to relax both your body and mind and enhance the bond between you and your growing baby. The sessions are a gentle variation of yoga and are suitable from twelve weeks pregnant through until baby’s arrival. Practising yoga during pregnancy can relieve stress and anxiety, soften and open the body to help prepare for birth, build strength and support the lower back, improve relaxation, promote restful sleep, keep the body supple through the pregnancy, and help to boost your energy levels. It also teaches breathing techniques and positions to utilise during labour, all the time enhancing the bond between you and your growing baby. Courses can be purchased in blocks of six, although, as you approach your due date, individual sessions can be purchased.
Follow our Facebook page for details of all clinic news.
Our classes are on Thursday evenings, from 6pm to 8pm, with refreshments available at the end of the sessions. “KG HYPNOBIRTHING” is a complete antenatal educational programme, tailored towards helping mums and their birth partners reduce the fear of childbirth. Karen teaches self-hypnosis, and breathing and calming techniques to empower you to give birth more gently, calmly and in greater comfort. In addition to this, she provides you with the information you require about various subjects, in order to ensure that you are fully empowered to be actively involved in any decision that is required during your journey into parenthood. Whilst it is acknowledged that birth doesn’t always go to plan and that there may be unforeseen issues that may complicate the process, hypnobirthing can provide you with the confidence and insight to ensure that, regardless of the outcome, you have a positive experience. Karen will explain how hypnosis can release fear and build confidence, teach you breathing exercises and deep relaxations, including visualisations. You will learn simple hypnosis activities to practise at home to help you to have the most enjoyable and memorable experience possible. If you would like more information about these exciting new services, or to book your place, please visit www.blossomingbumpstobabies.co.uk

Whittlesey Extravaganza Brings an Extra Christmas Surprise
T
he Whittlesey Christmas Extravaganza, held on Friday December 9th, was once again a well-attended and thoroughly enjoyable evening. Residents were entertained with music and dance performances, fairground rides, late-night shopping and a great many other festive activities. The Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street had an amazing surprise, when someone posted on their Facebook page that they had found one of their balloons in Germany! A group from the church had been giving out free balloons and face painting for the children during the evening. Marija Lysak, from the church, said, “We aim to make sure that every child receives a balloon
10

with their name on. The helium filled balloons, which feature our church logo, are very popular with the children. With all the excitement of the evening - the rides, stalls, and a visit from Santa – it’s quite easy for some children to accidently let go of their balloon, only to see it fly away into the sky. We were all amazed when we saw on our Facebook page that one balloon had been found in Germany, just north-west of Hamburg.” The balloon was found by Thomas Hinsche, who then posted a photograph (above right) of the balloon on the church Facebook page. Over three thousand people have seen the article on Facebook to date.

I Love to Love ...and the Straw Bear just Loves to Dance! This year's festival will live long in the memory of Ian Brown, who picked the day to propose to his girlfriend Emma.
"I met Emma at De Montfort University in Leicester, and we were friends for many years. I moved to Whittlesey five years ago and we went to every festival together. Two years ago we became a couple, and the Straw Bear Festival is always marked as our anniversary - that's why I chose to do it there. We've now bought a house in Bourne and are very happy. Thanks to the Straw Bear for making it that extra bit special!"

Could You Look After a Guide Dog? New Year, New Opportunity! If you are looking for an exciting and rewarding volunteer opportunity, then this is the role for you! Guide Dogs are looking for volunteers to look after a guide dog in training for ten weeks. Could you help? There are over 5,000 guide dog owners across the UK, but we don’t want to stop there; help us train the next group of dogs, to enable blind and partially sighted people to lead independent lives in your local community. As a volunteer boarder, you would be playing a vital role in a guide dog’s training and development. We need boarders in the Whittlesey area to home a dog for a period of ten weeks. During this time the guide dog would be collected from your home at around 8.30am, and would train with one of our instructors before being returned to you at around 3.30pm. As a boarder, you would need to follow correct commands and routines for our guide dogs, and follow any instructions 14
D I S C O V E R I N G

provided to you by the instructor. Your input will help ensure the guide dog is ready to take its next step to qualify as a guide dog, and meet its future owner. This is a role ideal for someone who works from home or who does not work; someone with the availability to support training, and also to look after the dog when they are not training, which could be a weekday, and does include weekends. A guide dog cannot be left alone for more than four hours, meaning this is a role that requires a lot of commitment. We would provide you with all the training you need, as well as all food and equipment for the dog. We also cover vet bills if required. So if you have a secure home, time on your hands, a garden with both grass and concrete for the dog, and a willingness to support a guide dog in training, we would love to hear from you! For more details please contact Christian Cornforth, Volunteer Consultant, on 0345 143 0223, or email Christian.cornforth@guidedogs.org.uk

How to Avoid Property Sale Turn-offs Get your house in order and don’t fall foul of property sale turn-offs if you are selling your home in the New Year. The start of a new year is often when people re-start their thoughts about moving home. But, if you are in the process of getting your house sale-ready, it may be worth thinking about some dos and don’ts when it comes to attracting sellers. According to a recent survey, which details the ten biggest issues preventing sellers from getting the asking price when selling their homes, bad smells top the list for homebuyers. “Inspired Wallpaper” asked 1,500 people what the most likely issues are that would put them off buying a house when viewing a property, and 36% said this was the biggest reason. Behind unpleasant smells on the list were bad layouts and D.I.Y. disasters, with outdated fixtures and fittings and clutter close behind. In addition, 13% named garish décor as their biggest turn-off. In seventh position on the list is mould, followed by lack of character and a disappointing garden. The research highlights just how important it is to present your home without these irritations, because they could result in lower bids for the property and possibly cost the homeowner a sale. So, if you are looking to sell your home in the near future, and your home is in need of some t.l.c, call in the professionals to ensure you have the best possible chance of attaining the asking price for your property. A word from... Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service: February 2017 Bulletin On-Call Firefighters On-call firefighters are a vital part of today’s fire and rescue service, providing an efficient and effective service that gives emergency cover to more than 90% of the UK. In Cambridgeshire, they make up 56% of the workforce. An on-call firefighter is not based at a fire station, but carries a pager and responds to emergency incidents as and when they happen. They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit to being available, plus additional payments for attending incidents and drill nights (one evening a week for two hours). On-call firefighters are men and women who may have other jobs, and are able to provide evening, daytime or weekend cover. When they are on-call they may be at home, working for themselves or for a nearby company, or out in their local community (staying within a five-minute travel time of the fire station), and are generally located in rural communities, small towns and villages. If you would like to become an on-call firefighter, or find out more, then please go to our website at www.cambsfire.gov.uk and search for “on-call firefighter” under the Careers section. Your Mayor Alex Miscandlon Alex Miscandlo n Hello everybody. As 2017 gets in to full swing, the civic diary quickly fills up. With this in mind, if anybody requires the support of the Town Council through the Mayor’s attendance at an event, then please get in touch with myself or the town clerk, and we will see what we can do to help. Due to editorial requirements in producing this article, the events taking place in January will be reported at a later date. Your Garden
February Gardening Tips February means spring is not too far away, with light levels increasing and temperatures on the rise. Spring bulbs are beginning to show and wildlife is beginning to stir into life. •
Dig over existing beds and borders, again incorporating as much organic matter as you can. This helps to get the beds ready for spring planting and sowing, and turning over also exposes the pests for the birds to eat.
•
Remember that frost-tender plants still need to be protected with fleece. There are still sharp frosts around, and a good layer of mulch will protect the roots of any newly planted trees or shrubs from the frosts.
•
Summer flowers - geranium, petunia, impatiens ('Busy Lizzie') and lobelia, along with some perennials - can be sown in a propagator in a heated greenhouse, or on a sunny windowsill. The temperature should be at about 65F to 70F, or 18C to 21C. Take care not to sow too thickly or over-water, as this can lead to the seedlings damping off. For seed sowing you can use a good multipurpose compost - for best results, riddle on a fine riddle, and add a small amount of fine perlite to the mix. Some seeds, like impatiens, are best left uncovered to germinate, while others can be covered with a very light covering of fine vermiculite.
•
Remember to regularly deadhead pansies and primulas. Removing faded flowers will help to prevent seeds setting, which in turn will give better flower performance.
• Start chitting early-seed potatoes. Stand them in a tray or egg box, and place them in a bright, cool and frost-free place. • Start sowing vegetable seeds such as leeks, onions and early brassicas under cover this month. •
Cut autumn-fruiting raspberry canes to the ground to stimulate new canes, which will fruit in the autumn. Cut the tips of canes that have grown beyond the top of their supports; cut just above a bud. Prune apple and pear trees whilst they're still dormant, and protect any early blossom on peaches, apricots and nectarines.
•
Trim winter-flowering heathers as the flowers disappear to prevent them becoming leggy. Lift and divide snowdrops while still in the green state.
• Prune winter flowering shrubs such as Mahonia, Viburnum x bodnantense, and winter jasmine.

ebruary is a strange month! It could be the coldest month but still have warm days and when it is cold, freezing or very wet it doesn’t quite seem right to start planting seeds. However, there are plenty that you can be starting off indoors and out. It is possible to sow crops such as broad beans along with early peas (under cloches), parsnips and garlic, but only do so if the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. A good idea for sowing peas is to use lengths of plastic guttering: half fill them with good-quality seed compost and sow the seeds about two inches apart, cover with compost, water and keep in a light spot under cover. Once the seedlings have grown to about three inches, make a shallow drill and slide the contents of the guttering into the drill. Make sure they are firmly bedded and water them. Also shallots can be planted; dig shallow drills about seven inches apart so that the tips are just showing, water and keep weed-free. Other crops that can be sown outdoors (watch the weather and make a judgement) are turnips, rhubarb crowns and grape vines. Seeds that can be planted indoors or under cover include broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage, sprouting broccoli – to name but a few.
ether
Growing Better Tog
TUBS (REPLANTED IF REQUIRED)
It really is the last time you can winter prune fruit trees as they should still be dormant; any later and, if it is mild, they will be starting to move into growth. As they are still dormant, bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted and autumn fruiting raspberries pruned. Make sure that you have got all of your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light, cool room where they can “chit” (sprout shoots) before being planted out. If the “chits” look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark. The soil can be prepared for the spring planting by completing the winter digging, if not already done, by removing any weeds that have survived the winter months. To warm up the soil for planting next month, cover it with fleece or polythene and, if you haven’t already, add well-rotted manure or compost to the prepared soil. Other jobs that can be carried out are: Removing dead leaves from cabbages and sprouts – if they start to rot, they can spread mould and mildew. Make sure that winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year. Spray fruit trees, whilst they are still dormant, with a plant-oil based winter wash to help prevent aphids and scale insects. Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes.
Happy gardening!

Home Interiors Interior Design
Taking a tip from the Hotel Industry - by interior designer Yasmin Chopin
S
pending two days with hoteliers at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Stansted, for the Hotel Designs Summit, gave me a unique insight into the hotel industry. I was invited by the hotel industry to speak on the subject of blogging, which was well received and generated much discussion and enquiry. We talked about design, interiors and customer service and how these things add up to make a guest feel very special. There are some design tips below…!
Whatever your reason for staying in a hotel, your basic needs will be met by “The Three Bs”. Tim Mills, a partner of the awardwinning Edgar House Hotel in Chester, explained that, once you’ve conquered the three Bs, you can go very much further to achieving a customer experience par excellence. The Three Bs Bed - ensuring you have the best night’s sleep in a comfortable bed using quality bedding.
So what can we pick up from this? Here are three ideas for your home:
and uneven could be characterful and interesting - think • Wonky about it before straightening and levelling. • Is your ceiling boring? Get creative with colour and/or pattern. you make more of a good view by raising your viewing • Can position or enlarging a window? 'Brassica Study’ Farrow & Ball.
Bath - providing a bath and/or shower that not only works properly, but gives you a sense of luxury. Breakfast - preparing a breakfast that is appetising, tastes great and uses the best ingredients. Using interior design tricks of the trade, Tim has decorated the seven rooms in his boutique hotel to generate a ‘wow’ from his guests. It sounds like a fun place to stay and explore. He said, One room has a wonky mantelpiece in it - it was wonky when we bought it but we made it even more wonky. Another room has a colourful ceiling, and the rooms on the river side of the property have their beds raised by a metre, so that guests can enjoy the views whilst eating breakfast in bed!” Having got the interiors sorted, it then comes down to the staff and service. Reaching out to make that very special connection with his guests, he provides a parking place with their name on; then he or his partner personally welcomes them with a glass of bubbly. He finds out if they have any special food or beverage ‘likes’ and goes all the way to ensuring that those items are in stock. And at the end of their stay, each guest receives a goodie bag to go home with! We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘going the extra mile’... well in Tim’s case it seems very appropriate and I am not surprised that the Edgar House Hotel is number one out of twenty-five hotels listed as ‘The Best Small Hotels in the World’ by Trip Advisor – a well-deserved accolade! Contact Yasmin Chopin on 07831 231 664, or email her ycid@yasminchopin.com. See more on her website: yasminchopin.com. Yasmin helps you create a new layout or decor scheme that reflects your personality and your lifestyle. She offers a two hour home visit which gives you a chance to ask all your questions and by chatting though your ideas you’ll come up with a plan.

Local History
The Great War in Whittlesey
PART 3: the ANKER brothers Last month I told the story of three brothers from Whittlesey who lost their lives to the ongoing war in Europe. This month we look at another, somewhat similar, story, which also involves three brothers. By Connor Martin. Brother of Ernest and Fred Anker, Bertie J. Anker was part of the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment in the First World War. He was the son of Robert and Alice Anker, who lived in Eastgate. Born in Whittlesey, Bertie enlisted in Flitton, in Bedfordshire, as part of the 'call to arms' in 1916. Before this point the government had relied on voluntary enlistment, but the Military Service Act of 1916 introduced conscription for all men between the ages of eighteen and forty-one (with some exceptions depending on circumstances and occupation). Bertie was unfortunately killed in action by gunfire to the chest on April 11th 1917, in northern France. The attack left a tenth of his fellow soldiers wounded, or worse. Just as we have seen before, this was not part of a wide-scale attack ordered by high allied commanders, but more of a military skirmish on the Western Front. This skirmish only involved a few dozen men, unlike mass offensives which 22
D I S C O V E R I N G
would involve thousands, and in some cases hundreds of thousands. It is unknown whether his body was ever recovered, but his name is engraved in the St. Martin Calvare British Cemetery and the St. Martin sur Cojeul in France. As per British tradition, his parents were given the death penny to recognise their son’s sacrifice for King and Country in the line of duty. The next brother, Ernest Anker, was conscripted into the 7th Northamptonshire Regiment, and was killed in action on June 16th 1917, near the town of Ypres. His name is engraved on the Menin Gate memorial there. The only brother to enlist in Whittlesey, Fred Anker, was enlisted into the Cambridgeshire Regiment in early 1916, and survived the horrors of the Somme. However, he was killed in action on July 31st 1917, about ten miles from where his brother Ernest was
Whittlesea
killed in Ypres. Whether Fred knew of his brother’s fate when he died is unknown, though it is doubtful given the communication methods in use at the time. The story of these three brothers, along with all the other Whittlesey people involved in the conflict, is a poignant reminder of how the war affected every family, whether urban or rural, poor or gentry. No matter who you were, the war provided unity and solidarity as men laid down their lives, often alongside their brothers and fathers, to protect us from the onslaught from the Central Powers. To conclude this article, I would like to ask readers for any personal stories of local families during the Great War. Maybe you have a relative who fought, or know a story or anecdote about Whittlesey during that time. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch by email at connor@greatwarlive.com. Fe br u a r y 2 0 1 7

Remembering
Malcolm James Bean 14.01.2016 We little knew that morning, that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you. You did not go alone, For part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories. Your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, you are always at our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again. Missing you today, and always.
Much love from Mu m, Dad, son Jordan, Lorraine, Dave, Denyse, Rob, Jay, Gemma, Ada m, Z oe, Ja mes, Jo, Tom, Lucy, Troy & Tianna xxx Lorraine said "I cannot believe it has been a year since my dear brother and business partner Malcolm passed away and changed our lives forever. We miss him so much, always running around, conscious of his fire shouts and always making time for a good chat with friends, clients, local people and businesses. We both played a very large part in the everyday running of our business for twenty years which, with his vast knowledge has left a massive loss for me and our staff.
Thank you to everyone who has supported and continues to support us - it means so much to me, the staff and all the fa mily. Lorraine

In the Hot Seat 1 What is your fondest memory of your childhood? Finding shells on the beaches near Padstow (my mother’s home) and fossils in the clay pits (when I was at King’s School, Peterborough).
2 WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY? A tutor at King’s, Dr A. G. Lowndes. He introduced me to the microscope and taught me how to look at life through a scientist’s eyes.
3 WHICH TWO CHARACTERS, ALIVE OR DEAD, WOULD YOU MOST ENJOY SHARING A MEAL WITH AND WHY? Living? Liam Hudson. We fostered him as a three-year-old and he was astonishingly bright. Now he’d be over forty, and we often wondered what happened to him.
Brian J. Ford
B
rian J. Ford is a world-famous scientist, a best-selling author, and a familiar face on TV.
He was born in Wiltshire, brought up in North London and has lived in Eastrea for thirty years, where he was behind the Eastrea Centre and, as Chairman of the Storers, used to organise the annual free pensioners’ lunch. Prof. Ford travels around the world to lecture on his research, and writes a column for an American academic journal.
F e brua ry 2017
Dead? Annie Tinkler, who once lived next door. She started the campaign for a village hall during WWII and was a remarkable character.
4 HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN JUST FIVE WORDS? Inquisitive, sociable, impetuous, philosophical, untidy.
5 What’s your favourite thing about Whittlesey? It’s a traditional market town that has all the hidden appeal of a Cotswold village. People don’t appreciate its importance, like the historic houses or the carillon in St Mary’s church.
6 And if there was one thing you could change, what would it be, and why? The modern-looking tiles under the Buttercross, and its ghastly pine ceiling. They belong in a kitchen from the 1960s!
7 What advice would you give to A 16-year-old YOU? Keep at it. If you think something through, it’ll work.
8 Where do you see yourself in the future? Tending the garden, travelling around to lecture with the odd spot of broadcasting, and (best of all) being home with my adorable wife Jan and our dog.

Dealing with
Technology
Malware
Hello, and welcome to the first Technical Information page of 2017. Next month I will detail some tips for using Windows 10, which I hope will be especially useful for those of you who have upgraded from either Windows 7 or 8.1. I have now completed the move from my old office to the new shop on the corner of High Causeway (opposite The Original Factory Shop), and I look forward to welcoming you there. During December and January the most prolific issue I have seen with customers’ computers is an increasing number of attacks by spyware, hackerware and adware, which I will collectively term “malware”.
So, just what are these little beasts? Very simply, they are different type of malicious software, created to damage or gain access to your computer system; or alternatively, to force your browser into displaying messages either advertising services, or tricking you into believing your computer has been hacked. The virus type of malware, such as keyloggers, worms and rootkits, will usually be dealt with by your Antivirus (having a good Antivirus will save you money in the long term). However, the advertising type of malware is put on your PC mainly for monetising it to other people, who can gain money by forced advertising, stealing information, spreading spam, or extorting money through data encryption. In these cases, it is worthwhile getting special anti-adware software for your computer. Malware gets onto your computer in a number of ways, either through downloads, opening certain emails, or just clicking on certain internet links. The more popular operating systems, such as Windows, are more vulnerable simply because more people use them. Many people believe Apple products, like Macs, cannot get viruses and malware, but this is a myth! Some viruses are more dangerous and undetectable than others. A fair few Antiviruses are unable to detect some adware, which can hijack your browsers to send you to certain pages like this:
This page is fake, and if you ever see such a message, do not call the number. You can close your browser without damaging your computer, and then immediately run your anti-virus scan. If this doesn't work, come to see me at AA Whittlesey Computers, where my employees and I can give you advice, or remove it for you. I am aware of three customers who have telephoned for ‘help’ - two were scammed out of £200, the other £300. The best way to defeat malware is to not get it in the first place. Check the web links you click, especially from obscure sites, and do not click on comments containing strange links or shortened URLs (such as tinyurl). These will change a website’s URL to a shortened link under that name. For example, google.com would become tinyurl.bit, and this would then send you to a Google lookalike page while infecting your computer with malware. So remember, have a good anti-virus and anti-adware installed, keep it up to date, and run it regularly – and if all else fails, come and see me or your preferred shop for help. F ive Steps to a ‘F lipping Perfect’ Pancake Day! This Pancake Day (Tuesday, February 28th) don’t be a flop. Just ditch the packet mix and impress your friends and family with delicious homemade pancakes. They take minutes to make and are tastier and better for you, so please see below some top tips on hosting a ‘flipping perfect’ Pancake Day, from Head Chef, Gary Durrant, at Five Star boutique hotel, The Arch, London.
1) Pick a pancake style Almost every country and culture has its own version of pancakes, from a Malaysian ‘Lempeng’, made with banana and coconut; to a French crepe; a fat Canadian pancake stack, or classic British pancakes served with sugar and lemon. The mixture for pancakes differs depending on the country’s readily available ingredients, such as corn in Venezuela, cabbage in Japan, and rice in Nepal. All types of pancakes are relatively easy to make, so why not consider trying some different kinds to spice up your Pancake Day?
2) Fat matters If you are making traditional English pancakes, make sure to use plenty of fat to get the batter nice and crispy. If you use oil, then I recommend vegetable oil, and if you use butter, then clarified butter works best.
3) Timing Pancakes should usually only take about two to three minutes to cook, but it’s best to ignore the clock and check for bubbles on the top of the pancake, which means it’s ready to flip over. Make sure not to cook it for much longer than two to three minutes, though, as the batter could dry out.
4) Toppings Pancakes are delicious both sweet and savoury, depending on your taste. They go very well with fresh fruit, chocolate, and maple syrup, but equally well with ham, cheese, and bacon. Try using different cheeses such as brie, ricotta, or blue cheese, which all taste amazing when melted inside a crispy pancake.
5) Hitting the pan Don’t just dollop the mixture into the pan with any old kitchen utensil. It's helpful if you spoon the batter into the pan using a large ladle, so it can be poured into the hot pan in one go. As soon as the batter hits the pan, tip it around from side to side, to get the base evenly coated with a nice thin layer of batter.
Here is a simple pancake recipe for making ten pancakes: Ingredients: 75g of plain flour, 120ml of full fat milk, pinch of sugar, pinch of salt and 1 egg. Method: Put the flour, salt, and sugar into a bowl and make a dip in the centre using a spoon. In a separate bowl, whisk the milk and egg together, and then whisk this gradually into the flour mixture. The batter should resemble the consistency of single cream. Now follow the tips above for pancake heaven. A heavy non-stick frying pan, about 16cm across, is best – over a steady, medium to high heat.

“Shall I compare thee to a … phwooar!
“Romance is not dead”, as the saying goes, but it could soon be rather poorly, if you would-be lovers fail to take note of the following… A recent survey conducted by blu.com has revealed the biggest turn-off in a potential partner on a first date is body odour. Over 2000 single people took part in the study and agreed, with almost 75% of respondents adding that it would be enough to make them reject the offer of a second date! Over half (53%) said they form an opinion of someone in less than fifteen minutes and would

Working for greater investment in Fenland - Steve Barclay M.P.
It
is the job of an MP to speak up for the people who they represent. When the government allocates money for transport schemes, skills training and job creation, they do so via a body called the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), who then prioritise which projects in their area should be awarded this money. For some time, I have been concerned that Fenland has not been receiving its fair share of investment from the Cambridgeshire LEP, which prioritises projects in the south of the county. I am continuing to work to address this to ensure that Fenland does in fact get the funding it deserves. It was lovely to receive a handwritten note over the Christmas period, from a constituent in Fenland, thanking me for writing on her behalf, to Fenland District Council, regarding setting up a Garden Waste subscription (paying for the “brown bin charge”). For those who do not have internet access, or are unable to set up a direct debit online, there has been much confusion over how to pay for their brown bin. After making enquiries on behalf of constituents, I thought
it useful to share the fact that the “brown bin charge” can be paid by visiting the Whittlesey Community Hub, where the staff will be able to assist in setting up a direct debit, and receive cash, cheque or debit card payments. I am aware that not all constituents have access to the internet, and was, therefore, glad to be able to assist.
Work on “Read to Succeed 2017” continues, with the aim to ensure more prizes for children who complete the summer reading challenge, and for the student volunteers who give up their summer holidays to volunteer in the libraries. The excitement on the faces of the children who had received a new book from “Read to Succeed 2016”, and seeing them enjoying and talking about books together in the playground at lunch time, was a personal highlight for me. I hope that by the end of this year, I will have a lottery funding bid ready to submit, so that “Read to Succeed” can continue for future years. I will be sure to update you on a regular basis over the coming year. As the chilly month of January draws to a close, I am looking forward to the onset of spring.

Magpas is Bowled Over by Local Club’s Support
W
hittlesey Manor bowlers have handed over a cheque for £760 to Magpas Air Ambulance, the emergency medical charity, the proceeds coming from the Peter Bavister Memorial Charity triples event held towards the end of the season. It means the club have now raised more than £2,200 for the charity from this tournament over the past three years. Receiving the cheque on behalf of Magpas, Steve Holt, the charity’s Director of Fundraising, said the total raised by the club so far equated to the saving of four lives – it costs around £500 per mission – and that the club should feel very proud of their efforts, which were very much appreciated by the charity.
It’s a Record! W

Church Matters What lies at the heart of Church membership? What is it that inspires people to live according to the teachings of Jesus - the teachings contained in the Gospels, and the other books of the New Testament? The answer is faith in God. In daily prayer and weekly services, we pray the words of the creed, a declaration of the central teachings of the Christian way of life. These teachings relate to the nature of God and our relationship with him. Christians believe in one God who has been revealed in three aspects. Classically this has been proclaimed in the language of three persons in one: God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Another definition uses one God, Creator, Saviour and Sanctifier. This sounds complicated, and it is. After all, what we are trying to do is define the nature of God using the language and ideas of our human experience, an exercise of the mind which in one sense is bound to fail, and in another is going to succeed only in part. God is a big idea for our minds to get around. But, remember we are God’s creation. Our human nature is programmed for to know the divine nature, if not fully, then certainly in
part. Please take some time to consider the following short creed. We believe in God The Father, the Creator, maker and sustainer of all. Not just our Earth and solar system but the whole Universe. God the origin of all matter. The Son, our Redeemer, our Saviour from sin and judgement. By his once and for all of us sacrifice. His death on a cross and resurrection to life eternal.By this he gathers all creation to himself. The Spirit, the sanctifier. The one who makes all things Holy. The one who blesses us in daily life and on special occasions. The power of God that inspires belief and trust. The grace of God that encourages us to follow the Christ like way of life. Amen With God’s blessing.

Whittlesey Christian Church
Don’t Let Another’s Apparent Failing Affect You During the process of establishing our Church, we gathered in the Causeway each Saturday morning to give out free balloons, paint children’s faces, do puppet shows and dance. In keeping with what I lovingly call ‘the Whittlesey effect’, many were initially sceptical of something new. Persistency paid off, and they began asking questions about our unusual approach to church life. Sadly, some shared disappointing experiences with church, and the lifestyles of some did not appear to reflect Christianity, despite attending church. I shared how Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Dillard spoke of experiencing disillusionment with the church, due to what she saw as serious failings in the establishment and people. Fortunately, she spoke to an understanding minister, who patiently listened then lovingly guided her to a more rewarding appreciation for her faith in Christ and the church. I then asked if they knew of shops who sold cheap computers or TVs,
backed by poor after-sales service. Naturally they did. I then asked why they still chose to own the products? The answer was, they ultimately found a better shop, offering quality products and excellent after-sales service. The church, like any organisation, has its good and not-so-good examples. However, this does not change the fact that Jesus established the church to be relevant in its generation, where all humanity could find love and acceptance. Unfortunately, some take longer than others to become true examples of the Christian message. For some, like Peter in the Bible, failing is something they pass through on their journey to something better. For others like Judas, failing becomes a way of life. Jesus never failed society, so don’t be put off by those who appear to fail in following the example He set. There are some amazing churches in our nation waiting to help you find a rewarding faith in God. We hope to see you Sunday at 10.45am.

The Importance of a Final Order upon Divorce - How to Protect your Lottery Winnings! by Melinda Smith
D
ivorce proceedings give rise to a number of financial claims that can be made by either party against the other, namely claims to share in property, savings, pensions and income. When a Petition for divorce is filed, the Petition will usually include, on behalf of the Petitioner, an application for such claims to be considered by the Court, in the event of agreement not being reached. When agreement is reached (which in most cases it can be) application can be made, in writing, for the Court to make a final Order recording the agreement. Alternatively, if the Court has to determine how financial claims are to be settled, an Order will be made finalising those claims. The final Order ‘closes the book’; once it has been made by the Court, whether by consent with the agreement of the parties or imposed by the Court, neither party can come back at any time in the future to seek any further financial remedy, whatever their future circumstances. There is one exception to this and that is where the Order has provided for maintenance to be paid. A maintenance order, whether for the benefit of a child or a spouse, is always variable. Generally, however, all other Orders made in relation to capital property and pensions are final Orders. Having a final Order in place means that both parties are able to move forward with their lives without worrying whether any future good fortune, obtained through luck or hard work, is likely to be ‘attacked.’ You should seek a final clean break Order, even if you have nothing at the time of your divorce, and have no property or savings to distribute. If you win the lottery, you could well find your ex-spouse filing an application with the Court seeking a share in the

same – even if your divorce was years ago. It is also the case that if you fail to deal with your marital assets at the time of your divorce (believing, for whatever reason, that it will be easier to deal with at a later date or perhaps more beneficial), bear in mind that the Courts will determine your claims based on your financial circumstances as they are at the time the claim is made, not as they were when you divorced. At the same time, the Court will not allow you to profit from your delay, if that is found to have been your intention. It is also worth remembering that if you are the Respondent to the proceedings and you do not deal with your financial claims, then, unless an application has been filed by you, and is pending, such claims are lost (save in relation to jointly owned property)in the event of your re-marriage. In short, even if you have nothing, a final Order will confirm that anything either of you receive in the future will be protected. If you have assets, deal with them now and obtain an Order – or you may lose out. If you would like further advice on this area of law, please contact Melinda Smith on 01354 602880 or email melindasmith@fraserdawbarns.com

Pets’ Corner by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre
Smoking and Your Pet Did you know that there are several diseases that can be caught by both people and animals? Some of these are called zoonotic, and include Giardia and Salmonella, which cause tummy upsets; scabies mite, which makes you itch; and rabies, which thankfully is not in this country at present. Other such diseases that affect both people and pets are cancers. According to Cancer Research UK's latest survey, for people born after 1960, there is a one in two chance of being affected by some form of cancer. Cancer in pets is much less common, and in wild animals it was rare until the last fifty years or so. Since then, the incidence has risen dramatically because of pollutants caused by man. We can try to alleviate the incidence of cancers in pets by having females spayed, having males castrated, applying sunscreen to the ears of white cats and dogs, and avoiding smoking in and around where our pets may reside, so they are not subjected to passive smoking. When someone smokes in the house, inhaled smoke is known as 'second hand smoke'. As well as this, there is smoke that settles on clothes, curtains, furniture and carpets, often known as 'third hand 52

smoke’. Our pets roll around on the carpets, sit on the sofas, and spend time being petted by their owners, and whilst doing these things they could be picking up smoke residue on their fur, and ingesting it as they groom. This is a particular problem in cats, who spend a great deal of time grooming. The incidence of lymphoma and lymphosarcoma increases by three fold in cats over five years of age. Another species at risk from passive smoking are cage birds. Smoke from cigarettes has around four thousand chemicals, including arsenic, cyanide, ammonia and formaldehyde. These cancer-causing substances land on your bird's perches, food and feathers, which are constantly preened to keep in tip-top condition. A bird has a very sensitive respiratory system, which needs two breaths to do one cycle, and is extremely efficient in transferring oxygen and other substances into the bloodstream. The body then has to eliminate these substances somehow, leading to damage in those organs. This is not an article to tell you not to smoke, but it is merely to inform you of the dangers to your pets of doing so.

Finance
Eamonn Dorling Delivering Simple Financial Advice - that really works
A New Start to the Year After many of the New Year resolutions have become a distant memory, I thought it would be helpful to suggest a review of financial objectives in 2017.
A
good starting point is to ensure you have access to a ‘rainy day fund’, so that any unexpected expenditure does not upset longerterm plans. A good rule of thumb is a sum equal to three months’ income. Next is to ‘insure the breadwinner’. Picture, if you will, the generator(s) of income as machines churning out money. If you had such a machine, you would insure it in case of breakdown. Here are some areas to consider. Firstly, in the event of death, accident or illness, how would the surviving family manage? How would the mortgage or rent get paid? How would further education be afforded? Who would look after the children? The solutions might include Life Cover, Serious Illness Protection and Income Protection. Think of these as safety nets - nobody wants to fall ill, but the knock-on implications can affect others. Secondly, think about planning for the future. It might be a known expenditure like the holiday of a lifetime, further education costs, or replacing the car, where the timescale is fairly short term. It may be medium to long term planning, like retirement, a house move or plans for the children. Often, a lump sum cannot be easily afforded out of income, and therefore saving over a longer term is the way to go. One option is to use a cash based regular savings account, though this can make the task more difficult than it needs to be, because interest rates are so low and there is little tax incentive.
If access to funds is likely to be sooner rather than later, it is important that there are no early access penalties. A simple solution might be a cash-based account. If savings are for later, it might be possible to achieve better returns from a more diversified investment, even if short term access is not recommended. Planning for retirement cannot be started too soon. The earlier you start, the easier funding will. Help in the form of tax breaks, employer contributions and investment fund performance can all help achieve the level of funds required to allow retirement when it suits you. If an employer offers to contribute to a pension, usually the employee will also need to contribute – the general message is to go ahead with this, because to refuse such help will make matters worse than receiving it. This is not rocket science! If you need help in creating funds for medium to long term use, and wish to discuss these or other points, please contact me for a free initial consultation. ■ Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Local History
Emigration from Whittlesey to Wisconsin, U.S.A. by Christine Thorpe, volunteer at Whittlesey Museum
In 1837, the year that Victoria became Queen, one Whittlesey family embarked on a journey to a new life in America. James Bullamore emigrated with his wife Mary Ann, two daughters and brother-in-law Charles. After three years in New York State, the family moved west to Wisconsin, where they became some of the early settlers in the town of Paris, in Kenosha County. Applying the farming skills he had learnt in Cambridgeshire, James bought parcels of land, and the family prospered, growing in number and becoming pillars of the rural community. In 1851, James’s older brother, William, his wife Mary and their seven children left Whittlesey to join their family in America. They left behind Catherine, the widowed mother of William and James, her husband having died in the 1832 cholera epidemic. Further tragedy struck some thirty eight days after arrival, when their mother died. Less than two years later a brother also passed away. However, the remaining family pioneers either settled in Wisconsin, or travelled further afield to North Dakota or Pennsylvania. The family came together again at the Chicago State Fair in 1893, and it was two years later that William Bullamore was prompted to write his poem.

D I S C O V E R I N G
So we bade farewell to all and early on the morrow Were by our teams conveyed to the town of Peterboro’ From whence we did embark upon a railway train And forward we were carried to a seaport of the Main At Liverpool we landed near the close of day And for the house of a Mr Fairburn did enquire the way Then procured our passage on a vessel, the Clara James by name Which was commanded by Capt. Duncan, a mariner of fame Soon the order to depart was given about the midforenoon On Friday 1851 and the thirteenth day of June Then we left old England kindred and friends behind To cross the trackless ocean our future home to find Though water rough and smooth Our vessel did plow her way Landing us forty three days passage At Quebec in Canada We again resume our journey and with sadness I must relate The death of our youngest sister, which leaves our number eight Once more we renew our journey And at the end of seven days space Weary with travel and anxiety, did reach our destined place, town of Paris Kenosha Co. Wis.
Above are some extracts from a poem written by one of William’s sons, which vividly recounts their emigration. We are able to retell this story thanks to a direct descendant of James Bullamore, who visited Whittlesey Museum in August 2016. The museum has since helped Robert Swartz to further his family history research, and he has shared much of his genealogy (including the poem). ‘Good School’ in The Fens Continues to Impress! Following an Ofsted inspection in December 2016, Coates School was deemed to be a “good school”. The Headteacher, staff and governors are delighted. Here, we see what makes the school such a great place for young learners… Coates Primary School continues to have high expectations, says the Ofsted Inspector, with purposeful, effective leadership. The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school, led by Headteacher Lindsey Boucher, an inspirational role model for leaders, who develops staff and pupils at Coates to achieve their best. Coates School staff have a determination to do the very best for every child, no matter what their need or ability, and as a result pupils are happy, confident and achieving well, and also have a great deal of pride in their school. There is an effective ethos and culture of safeguarding for pupils in the school, and parents are confident in the safety of their children. Positive parents’ comments were received by the Ofsted Inspector, one being, “The staff are dedicated, hard-working and approachable. They are completely focused on getting the best out of all the children, and children love their school.” Pupils’ positive attitudes to learning are a verification of the school’s success, and one of the younger pupils said, “I love trying new things. 60

It makes me feel excited about what I am doing.” Older pupils provide exemplary role models for younger pupils to aspire to, and inspection evidence showed that pupils set themselves high standards, and as a result, they are consistently achieving well, and are a credit to the school. The Chair of Governors congratulated and thanked staff, pupils and governors for their hard work, and also the very supportive parents, many of whom participate in school activities throughout the year. Lindsey Boucher, a Headteacher with a young family herself, understands the needs of children and parents well. She ensures that the teaching and provision of the curriculum is a strength that contributes significantly to pupils’ success, so that pupils leave Coates School as confident, positive, self-assured young people, ready for the next stage of their learning. Pupils’ targets are aspirational, and Lindsey Boucher says she looks forward to leading the school to enjoy and achieve continued success in the future.

Tobogganing Fun at Tallington for Park Lane! As a fabulous finish to their topic "Frozen Kingdom", Year Six pupils were privileged to take part in a morning’s tobogganing session at Tallington Lakes. The topic had encompassed aspects of geography and history, with students learning about the Antarctic and the Arctic Circle. The trip to Tallington Lakes was a chance to experience some extreme weather conditions, as well as to set some personal physical challenges to everyone involved. Sue Bradshaw, Year Six teacher, said, "All pupils challenged themselves to push themselves to their limits, and conquer their fears. They sprinted to the top of the dry ski slope, and perfected their techniques as they sped to the bottom of the slope." Everyone agreed it was a fantastic way to end the topic.
E-Safety at Alderman Jacobs School The New Year started at Alderman Jacobs with the adults going back into the classroom for some very important lessons… Our ICT leader took time to train both ourselves and our children on the potential dangers of today’s technology-focused world. Many of our children will have had new games consoles for Christmas, and spend much of their time online. As responsible adults we need to ensure that they are aware of the risks, and know how to keep themselves safe; as a school, we run regular sessions for the children and their parents, and also subscribe to a 62

number of publications on a regular basis. With the correct security systems set up, as well as careful monitoring by parents, the internet should not be a dangerous place. Many of our children used the internet to carry out research for their project-based homework over the Christmas holiday. Each half term, the children are encouraged to prepare for their next theme in a variety of interesting ways. During this term we will host another e-safety evening for our parents, where we hope to support our families with any issues they may have. Fe br u a r y 2 0 1 7

Peterborough Regional College
is one of the largest and most successful colleges in the eastern region, offering a comprehensive range of study programmes, which are closely matched to the skills needs of the region. Students at the College are taught in specialist,“industry standard” facilities, by tutors who areexperienced professionals within their curriculum area. The College also has great links with employers, exposing students to fantastic work experience opportunities, and giving them better preparation for employment. The College prides itself on ensuring that their students are fully prepared for the outside world, once they have finished their programme of study, whether that be the world of work or university. The vocational courses at “PRC” are a popular route for students who have just finished their GCSEs. These vocational courses are designed to prepare the learner for a specific trade, or industry, so that they leave the College with the skills, experience, and knowledge needed to go straight into employment. This is ideal for those who want to combine theory work with practical, hands-on learning, and experience. It is also important to note that the “Level 3” vocational courses at the College can also lead onto university. For example, a full “BTEC Level 3” course studied for two years at Peterborough Regional College is the equivalent of three “A” Levels studied in a Sixth Form. After studying with “PRC” many students’ progress onto a variety of exciting destinations, some of which are detailed below: Phil Simmonds – Musician, LA Vernon Horne and Jordan Burgess – Guyra Ghosts Rugby Club, Australia Molly Darwood and Macaulay Nicholson – London Studio Centre of Dance Lauren Grant - British Airways Liam Lorraine – The University of Chester, studying sport, with an internship at Stoke City FC If you’re interested in studying at the College, but not sure how to get there, don’t worry - the College now offer low-cost transport for full-time students, to and from "PRC" for just £150 per year! There are a variety of routes available, and the buses drop off and pick up right outside the College entrance, so all you need to do is make your own way to and from the local pick-up point. Planning permission has been granted and the tender package prepared. Agreeing arrangements for access to private land for ground investigation surveys is delaying the completion of the works information. Given the number of earthworks within the scheme, this is critical information for contractors to inform the tendered price, eliminate risk and provide greater cost certainty. Officers are working with the legal team and the land owner to agree access arrangements and it is anticipated that the ground investigation surveys and analysis will be completed in November.

The Local Music Scene
Gear today, gone tomorrow! Following on from last month’s look at singing groups, this month we consider buying a first guitar. By Dave Bailey.
W
hether a gigging professional or a wannabe musician, there is so much help and advice available on what is needed at each level of ability. There are many music shops out there, and taking the sometimes rocky path of mail-order impulse buys can be either remarkably successful, or leave you with something that’s suitable only as scrap! Either way, there are a number of key decisions to make before you leap for the buy button. Always remember what the aim of your first buy is. There’s an array of acoustic, semi acoustic, solid and hybrid guitars, ranging in price from £25 up to £20,000 plus, and they will be built for a variety of uses. As a rule, the first purchase is usually an acoustic guitar, either nylon or steel strung, as it will need no amplification and can be used to hone the skills and techniques required. See a few performers at local open mics to look at what’s being used, and how they sound.
A steel strung acoustic or solid guitar, if played on a daily basis, will usually cause calluses. You may be familiar with the Beatles’ “I’ve got blisters on my fingers” and Bryan Adams’ “Played it ‘til my fingers bled” – these lyrics can become a reality, but are soon forgotten as the digits harden to the activity! (Any nail extensions on the fretting hand may soon be trimmed!) It’s important to select an instrument which feels right to hold, does not require a vicelike grip to press the strings, has exactly an octave at the twelfth fret on all strings (called intonation; on most acoustics this is determined by the position of the bridge), sounds pleasant, and is the correct orientation (left/right handed). The usual first step is a trip to the local music shop, where you will most likely peer longingly at some exotic rare wood and precious metal beauty with a price higher than the Shard!
Whilst a complete beginner may be looking for an instrument that has a good tone, it is important that it feels comfortable to play, as often a used or poorly built instrument may end up rejected and gathering dust. This is often the very reason a used instrument has been sold.
Remember that people who staff music shops tend to be performers or teachers. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice, as most love the opportunity to get away from the till and demonstrate. Though many guitarists still start by learning Bert Weedon’s “Play in a Day”, first published in 1957, there is no substitute for a good local music teacher, which we will look at next month.
Most of those who are new to playing guitar do not realise the effect on fingertips and nails.
Open mic listings can be found at www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm.
