Introduction
Welcome to Your August Issue. Inside Highlights
We’ve got lots of exciting news for you this month, including updates on a number of big local issues. These include the latest on the internationallyimportant Must Farm archaeological finds, a promising update on the first stage of work to improve Whittlesey Station, and news from Whittlesey Town Council on their plans for our former Police Station. I know the closure of the Police Station has been a somewhat contentious issue over recent months, so it’s great to hear that the building will at least be given a new lease of life as an asset that the whole community can benefit from. Read all about it in the Community Matters section.

Eat the Season
Roast Grouse
The glorious twelfth, August 12th, is the first day of the grouse hunting season. Ask your butcher to order a brace in for you. This simple recipe shows off the meat at its best. Roast grouse is traditionally served with bread sauce, game chips and watercress.
Method 1 Pre-heat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6. Put a roasting tin into the oven ready to take the grouse. 2
Season each bird inside and out, put a knob of butter and a sprig of thyme inside the cavity of each bird, and tuck a sprig of thyme under each leg.
I n g redie nt s 2 w ho le grou se 4 ra sh ers st reak y ba co n 35g butt er 6 sp rig s of th ym e Sa lt & pe pper
3 Heat a little butter in an oven-proof pan. Sear the birds on their backs and on each side and the breast until golden brown. 4
Turn the birds breast-side upwards, lay two rashers of streaky bacon over the breast of each grouse, and smear some more butter over the bacon.
5 Transfer to the pre-heated roasting tin and put in the oven. 6
Roast for between 16 and 20 minutes, basting at least twice during that time, depending on size. (You can tell whether they are cooked by pressing the breasts with your finger. They should be springy. If they’re too soft, cook for a couple of minutes more).
7 Leave to rest in a warm place for 10 minutes before serving.

McCain Does Good in the Community Since McCain opened its manufacturing facility in Whittlesey forty years ago, the site has maintained close links with the local community and supported numerous projects that make a difference to people's lives. It’s all part of the company’s ‘Be Good, Do Good’ philosophy. Recently, staff from the site set themselves a 'DIY SOS' style challenge. The team visited three local care homes – Aliwal Manor, The Gables and The Hermitage – with the aim of making the residents feel good. Over a four hour period, they transformed raised beds, painted garden seating, cleared garden waste, overhauled a summer house and even took residents out for the day to share stories whilst the transformations were being completed. The evening concluded with afternoon tea at Aliwal

Manor, where the residents enjoyed talking to the team and thanked them for their efforts. Jo Williams, HR Manager at McCain, said: “We are proud to integrate into the communities where we operate, and play a positive role in improving the quality of life for our employees, their families and their neighbourhoods. The team at Whittlesey enjoyed the experience and found it very rewarding.” In July, employees at McCain held their annual Family Fun Day, where they were joined by Discovering Whittlesea's lucky 'Find the Golden Spud' winners. Mel Gowler, QA Manager, said: "It was a pleasure to welcome the winners to our Family Fun Day. Throughout the day there was something for everyone, and the Red Arrows even did an impromptu fly-over!”

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better
The Art of Growing a Human The formation of a human requires an extraordinary level of organisation and accuracy to coordinate trillions of cells to create the same form time and time again. So how do we do it? In this article, we aim to provide you with a simplified overview of our current understanding of this extraordinary process. There are three basic components to organised growth: 1) Genes – these provide the basic plan for our development, and drive cellular division. 2) Cellular movement – this is a consequence of cellular division, and thereby creates forces which mould the shape of our overall structure and stimulate surrounding cells. 3) Chemical signals – these are released during stimulation, and alter the function of the affected cell as well as the cells around them. Let’s begin by looking in detail at genes. These provide the basic building plans of our form, and like all building plans, they are modified as the project progresses. There is a greater degree of modification in the creation of a living being than in, for instance, a house, because in a living being everything is in a constant state of change. A further complexity is that cells that are being added are created from the existing cells. In the case of a brick wall, the last placed brick does not generate the next brick. It is this replication which generates the bulk of the movement, and in so doing creates pulling, pushing, stretching and suction forces. It is this cellular movement which shapes the structure. For example, if the bone cells of an arm are replicating faster than the cartilage cells immediately in front of it, what will happen? The cartilage cells will get
flattened and be forced to grow sideways. Hence why the bones have a flattened cartilage lining at the end of them. The forces placed on the cells will not only influence their direction of movement, but also what is chemically happening inside. Inside a cell we have many thousands of chemical reactions occurring. When the outer wall is deformed by a pushing force, for example, it will change these reactions. The change may cause the cell to change its function (e.g. turning from a bonemaking cell to a tendon-making cell), or the cell will release chemicals into the surrounding space. These chemicals are called signalling molecules, and they are absorbed by the surrounding cells, which affect their internal reactions. In this way, the cellular motion alters the direction of construction in the area, in a way similar to how a bricklayer will signal to the plasterer that he is to take over. In our bone-cartilage example, as the bone cells push into the cartilage cells, they cause them to flatten. The flattening force alters the internal reaction. Some of the signalling molecules would then activate a different part of the gene, turning the cell into a synovial fluid producing cell. In addition, some signalling molecules would be released into the outside and be absorbed by the surrounding bone-making cells. This would affect their internal reactions in such a way that they stop replicating. Hence the bone stops growing. It has a thin cartilage layer on its end, and at the periphery are synovial producing fluid cells which lubricate the joint. Through this complex interaction of gene expression, cellular motion and chemical signalling, we replicate a human form time and time again.

Vintage Vehicles at the Whittlesey Festival One of the many highlights of the Whittlesey Festival – which celebrates its tenth year on September 10th - is the vintage vehicle display, which features around 120 cars and motorcycles on show along Market Street and Broad Street. With vehicles ranging from Austins and Fords from the ‘30s and ‘40s, to more modern hot rods, visitors are guaranteed to be reminiscing about the cars their fathers and grandfathers drove. Some of the vehicles are unique to this event and there’s the rare opportunity to see the Gilbern, which has been totally restored by retired racing mechanic David Nicholson. David Burton, who organises the car display, said: “The vintage vehicles are enjoyed by both the public and the exhibitors, who get immense satisfaction in showcasing their pride and joy. We thank them all for their support and look forward to seeing everyone in September”. As well as the classic cars, this year’s Festival features numerous entertainment acts, including The Romford Drum and Trumpet Band, Peterborough Highland Band and the ‘Cockney Pride’ Pearly King and Queen. There are also many stalls, a craft fair and the Schools Art Exhibition, and the children can enjoy rides, free face painting and puppet shows (with puppet workshops, new this year!). Every year we’ve been very fortunate to enjoy a World War II flypast, and the skies above this year’s Festival will be graced by the Dakota and Hurricane. This is always a poignant moment during the day, as onlookers are reminded of what those who served on our behalf during the war must have experienced. If you haven’t done so already, put Sunday September 10th firmly in your calendar. The Festival begins with the parade at around 9.45am, and finishes at 4pm. For more information about the Festival, please contact Brian Smithyman on 01733 752093 or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005. 16

Whittlesey Teaching Assistant in the Queen’s Birthday Honours Mrs Bailey, a teaching assistant at Sir Harry Smith Community College, has just been awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, in recognition for her amazing contributions to the College over many years. Mrs Bailey will receive a medal at a ceremony in Cambridge, and has also been invited to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace. Known affectionately as ‘Fiz’, Mrs Bailey has worked at the school for thirty eight years, and recently celebrated her 76th birthday. As well as being a fantastic teaching assistant, she also works voluntarily in the dining hall every day at break and lunch time, and has for many years maintained many of the College gardens in her own free time. Mrs Bailey also makes the floral arrangements and decorations for all the major events at the College, including the Year 11 Prom, Year 13 Summer Ball and the awards evenings held throughout the year. Jane Roughley, Director of Post 16 Education at the College, said: “Mrs Bailey is a pillar of our school community and she is the most positive of role models for all of our students and staff. Her enthusiasm and love for the College is infectious.” Principal Dawn White added: “On behalf of everyone at SHSCC, I’d like to thank Mrs Bailey for her fantastic contribution to our College, and we are so pleased that her dedication has been recognised in such a special way.” The school celebrated the fantastic news with their very own garden party, in which staff past and present joined together to congratulate Fiz on her achievement. She is pictured (centre) with Jane Roughley and Sixth Form Administrator Claire Sweeney. AUGUST 2017
Exciting Times Ahead at the Broadway Theatre It was only a few weeks ago that plans were unveiled to save the Broadway Theatre in Peterborough from being turned into a block of luxury apartments. With no venue of similar size and scope within a forty-mile radius, Peterborough can now celebrate the beginning of a new era for a landmark that has been serving the area since 1937. Mark Ringer, new Managing Director of the theatre, said: “We will begin a full programme of entertainment from the first of September. In the coming months, we’ll also be looking to promote our separate conference centre, and we’ll provide Walter’s Bar & Eatery as a place for people to meet up in a unique and relaxing atmosphere.” But that’s not the only good news; a new working arrangement will cement The Broadway Theatre as not only a top entertainment provider, but also an active communications hub. Charity training organisation Hereward Media will be working from the rear of the complex, meaning Local TV station Hereward Television can finally go ‘on-air’ this autumn. Whittlesey-based Alex Geairns, Station Director for Hereward Media, said: “We’ve had various sticking points regarding the leasing of other premises in the city centre, but these have been remedied in a single stroke by the management of The Broadway. We are very grateful to them for their generous provision of facilities.” Peter Dawe, leader of the Dawe Charitable Trust which is supporting the project, said: “Hereward Media is very much geared to becoming a valuable resource for the community. I am delighted that we can help out in bringing their plans, which also include a local news website with citizen journalists, to fruition.” You can share your views about what you’d like from the Broadway Theatre by filling in a questionnaire, available online or as a hard copy. Visit www.emtv.uk for more details.
Flu Vaccinations to be Offered Next Month New Queen Street Surgery will be holding their flu vaccination clinics on Saturday 23rd and Saturday 30th September, between 8.30am and 11am. For more information, call the surgery on 01733 204611 or visit their website.
Councillor surgeries will be held in Grosvenor House from 9.30am to 10.30am on the first Saturday of every month throughout 2017. Councillors present on Saturday August 5th will be: Councillor Steve Garratt (District and Town Councillor) Councillor Bob Wicks (Town Councillor) If you have any matters of concern and wish to discuss them with a Councillor, then please come along and let us know.
Congratulations to our Father's Day Competition winner, Kiera Wallace! Kiera won her Dad a free haircut and product – courtesy of Jason's Barbers – by correctly matching each statement with the famous father most associated with it, back in our June issue. Don't worry if you missed out, as this month we're giving you the chance to win in our Seaside Hunt. See page 39 for details!

Your Garden
August Gardening Tips During this month you should see a good return on the time that has been invested earlier in the year, and be gathering the fruits of your labour: Visits to the supermarket fruit and veg counter should be far more infrequent, as you now have a daily supply of wonderful fresh produce. A good job to do this month is to take stock of where you have planted this year’s crops and start plans for next year’s crop rotation. The weather has been very erratic so far; we have seen some of the hottest days for a long time, along with some pretty wet weather, so frequent watering is a must. Putting mulch around vegetables will help retain the moisture. However, as it is drier, the weeds are less rampant and the occasional hoeing keeps them at bay, so – more time watering, less time weeding. It’s more about harvesting in August rather than planting but there are still one or two crops that you can sow: mainly lettuces and salad leaves, spring onions, radishes, Japanese onion seeds (in situ) and a last batch of carrots and turnips. However, as you harvest your crops and create some space you can transplant winter and spring cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli and kale, and sow a few more seeds for spring cabbage. Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot. 18

If you wish to store garlic, onions and shallots they will need to be thoroughly dried out and this can be achieved by lifting them carefully and laying them on the ground in the sun or spreading them out on racks. They can then be strung and hung, but not in the kitchen as the atmosphere is too moist; somewhere cool and dry is advisable. Other jobs to do this month: • Don’t forget to pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes, as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: if runner beans are left unpicked for any length of time cropping is greatly reduced – you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year. • Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. • Be on the lookout for potato blight. Happy harvesting!

In the Hot Seat
IN THE HOT SEAT Pauline is a Holistic Therapist based in Whittlesey. Most of her career was spent in the secretarial/administration divisions of corporations such as Thomas Cook, Norwich and Peterborough and a national engineering company in Bretton. After being made redundant seventeen years ago, she opted for a complete career change and went to college to study alternative therapies, mainly those related to remedial soft tissue work. Where were you born, and what’s your fondest memory of your childhood? I was born in Hong Kong and married a local Whittlesey man thirty eight years ago. My fondest memories as a child are those of travelling around the world with my parents, wherever they were posted by the British forces. The best place was Tripoli in Libya, and it really saddens me today to see the destruction of this beautiful country.
Pauline Slack
My most treasured moments today are those spent with my four beautiful grandchildren Harry, George, Ella and Rosie, when I am not working. Who has had the greatest influence on you, and why? The greatest influence in my life has been the wonderful people I’ve met who have inspired me to continue to improve my remedial massaging techniques, and to think outside the box when dealing with a remedial muscular issue. Which two characters, real or fictional, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with, and why? The two characters I would love to meet and share my dining table with are His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and Tony Buzan. These two people would definitely be interesting people to chat to, to enlighten me spiritually and to educate me in different learning techniques.

How would you describe yourself in five words? I would describe myself as tolerant, patient and empathetic… I hope that is how people perceive me! What’s your favourite thing about Whittlesey? I am very appreciative of the kindness to me shown by the Whittlesey folk whilst I have lived here for forty years. The people of Whittlesey have been very supportive in my business and have made me very welcome in the community.
…And if there was one thing you could change, what would it be, and why? If there’s one thing I’d like to see in Whittlesey, it’s the return of the unique and individual shops that we used to have. Back then, people from surrounding areas would come from afar to patronise our shops. What advice would you give to your 16-year-old self? The advice I would give to my 16-year-old self is to “Be kind to yourself, and don’t let other people define you.” Where do you see yourself in the future? My hopes for the future are to continue the balance of my work and personal life, and to provide first class service to the community with my holistic therapies.

Matters Council's plans for Police Station Following Whittlesey Town Council’s acquisition of the former Police Station in Queen Street, a working party has been set up to oversee the conversion of the premises into a community asset for the town. Initially, this will involve providing a new Council Chamber and offices, and providing suitable working accommodation for Town Councillors and visiting personnel. The members of the working party are the Town Mayor, Cllr Ralph Butcher, Cllr David Mason (who will chair all future meetings) and Cllrs Eamonn Dorling, Alex Miscandlon and Bob Wicks. Two meetings have taken place already, and one of WTC’s priorities is to seek interest from contractors for the conversion work, an advertisement for which will be placed in local newspapers soon. It is hoped that local traders will be given every chance to assist in the refurbishment, which will convert an otherwise redundant building into a valuable community asset for years to come.
Railway Station Surveys Get Underway Work to improve the railway stations at Manea and Whittlesey is now steaming ahead, as contractors recently undertook survey work at both sites. Engineers surveyed the stations and surrounding land as part of an ambitious project to lengthen the platforms at both stations, and provide a footbridge between the two platforms at Whittlesey. The improvements will enable trains to have more carriages, boosting passenger numbers at both stations. The survey work forms part of a detailed feasibility study, which was made possible after Fenland District Council was awarded £359,000 on behalf of the Hereward Community Rail Partnership (HCRP) last year. It is hoped the feasibility study work will be complete by December this year, when options for the various improvements will be brought forward. Cllr Simon King, the HCRP's chairman, said: “The commissioning and completion of these surveys is an important milestone in this project. Detailed plans and measurements of each station will facilitate ongoing option design work. The CRP is expecting to share all the information from this study, including the options for each scheme, in early 2018.”
Options on the Table for Must Farm Finds Councillors from Whittlesey Town Council recently attended a meeting to discuss recommendations outlined in a final report on the Must Farm finds. Draft recommendations were for Project A: a redevelopment of Peterborough Museum, and a redevelopment of Flag Fen as a reconstructed site and visitor attraction. After WTC explained an alternative vision - using land near to the A605, within the parish of Whittlesey and close to where the artefacts were found – it was agreed that Project B should also be included. Project B could be an educational Heritage Centre: a natural and environmental attraction with links also to local culture, brick-making and prehistory. Its proximity to Whittlesey would bring 22

an international attraction with employment, education and volunteer opportunities to the town. It was felt that the existing cycle paths, nearby nature reserve and imminent King’s Dyke bridge crossing would make the project ‘a very exciting complement to the Flag Fen component of Project A’. It is unlikely that the finds could ever be displayed in a location that does not have museum accreditation, and while Flag Fen is more difficult to access, it does have longstanding expertise in the preservation of such objects. A special project team is being created to bid for national funds, and Project B is to be spearheaded by WTC and Fenland District Council.
AUGUST 2017
A WORD from...
Your Mayor Cllr. Ralph Butcher
Ralph Butch er
We saw some lovely weather in June – no more so than on Sunday 18th, when large crowds turned out to enjoy music on the Market Place, arranged by the WTC Projects Committee with assistance from the Town Clerk.
More for Children at Whittlesey Museum Whittlesey Museum has been improving the range of activities on offer for children of all ages. Twelve-year-old Amy, granddaughter of one of the museum volunteers, has designed a free children's quiz about the objects on display in the museum. There are also purple activity boxes available in Room 6 of the museum, each of which contains a game or activity based on a local history topic and can be used either by a single child or in a small group. The museum has also designed two new baby and pre-schooler activity bags for families to borrow and use in the museum. Each bag contains a book and some toys which go with the story. One bag design is aimed at babies and young toddlers, and contains the Lucy Cousins board book ‘Hooray for Fish’ and a selection of colourful and textured fish toys for sensory play, based on the fishy rhyme. Slightly older children who have started to enjoy imaginative play have an activity bag based on ‘How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth’ by Michelle Robinson. Adults can read the story while their child acts it out, using the props inside the bag to get the cuddly but unwilling mammoth through its bath. After using the activity bags, families can search the museum for a related object described in the bag – a giant replica of a local pike and a real mammoth tusk. Whittlesey Museum is also holding more events aimed specifically at families. In July an Emergency Services afternoon for younger children was held, while on Sunday October 29th the ‘Museum after Dark’ event will give older children the opportunity to explore the museum by torchlight. A U GUS T 2 017
I only managed the last part of the afternoon as I had been representing Whittlesey elsewhere in my Mayoral role. It was good to see so many people of all ages enjoying the music, and all those I managed to speak to said that they had enjoyed the afternoon. Not unusually for me I had left my wallet behind, so thanks to Wayne Gale for treating me to a much needed pint of beer! By the time you read this article hopefully you will have enjoyed another successful event on the Market Place. I presume most people know by now that WTC has purchased the former Police Station in Queen Street. The plan is to use this building for all Council requirements, and hopefully have a commercial venture in the future to bring in some revenue There will be quite a lot of thought and work going into this project before the building will be ready for us to move into, but I am confident that it will be a real asset for the town. Finally, with the school holidays upon us, I hope everyone has a great summer. Let’s hope for plenty more sunshine! Regards Councillor Ralph Butcher, Mayor of Whittlesey

Homes
If you’re looking to sell your home, here are a few handy tips from us at Malcolm James Work with us and we will work for you. At Malcolm James, we believe every seller and their home is unique. We want you to tell us what made you fall in love with your home and what you enjoy most about it now. We can then highlight this information when we start marketing your home to like-minded buyers. Make us aware of your situation too. If you need a quick sale, for a multitude of reasons we need to know. Likewise, if you can't move for six months, or, if you need to move like, yesterday, tell us, We may be able to regulate the pace of the sale. We know the local market and we have your interests at heart. We will advise you every step of the way. Settling on an asking price will be one of the biggest decisions you make in the process. Always remember an over-inflated asking price may really inhibit the speed of the sale, whilst undervaluing your home may sell it quickly, but will not maximise your benefit. Buyers will be doing their own research looking at comparable sales, so it is important that your agent, like us, advises you on price accurately. We work tirelessly to maximise the benefit you get from selling your home with us. When it comes to your property there's no avoiding those little DIY jobs that have been waiting to be done for years when you are looking to sell! If you can, take some time to fix those loose floorboards, finish paint jobs, nail down the squeaking floorboard and fit the last skirting board. Making your home look its best will help you to get the price when selling! Before the viewings begin, make sure your home is clean from top to bottom, especially the kitchen and bathroom! The more welcoming your home is, the more appealing it is! Improve your home's kerb appeal, too. Simple things make a difference, such as cleaning or painting your front door, sweeping away any leaves from the front of the house, mowing your lawn and just making sure your garden looks neat and tidy. Mowing your lawn and just making sure your garden looks neat and tidy. You can show

how particular areas can be used with strategically placed garden furniture. By law, you will need to commission an EPC (energy performance certificate) for your property. We can help you to arrange this. You won't be able to market the property without one, so it needs to be sorted as soon as possible Make sure you have all of your paperwork in order as this can really speed things up. So, if your property is leasehold or share of freehold, make sure you have the papers ready to pass on to your solicitor. Likewise, obtain any planning or building consents well in advance - these can help clinch a sale. Your solicitor and/or your agent will be able to advise you on the type of paperwork you need to gather. It's a tricky one, but try and work around viewings. It really helps matters if buyers are able to view your home at a time that suits them. If not, there's the risk they'll see another property and forget yours. If you have tenants in the property, give them plenty of notice about your plans and keep things friendly. That way, they're more likely to keep the place looking tidy and accommodate viewings. If at all possible another nice touch is to leave any parking space you may have free for the buyer. Something as simple as an easy park will help ensure they enter your home in a good frame of mind. Avoid strong cooking smells and don't smoke in the house in the run up to viewings. Open windows and place a few bunches of fresh flowers around the house to freshen things up and demonstrate that you care about what the buyer thinks. FACT: Malcolm James are Whittlesey’s expert property selling agents. Currently we have limited Stock – and need more! The statistics show that we sell houses quicker than any other agent in Whittlesey, - with fewer price reductions, and we sell a higher proportion of our stock than any other local agent! Why use anyone else when we can sell your home quicker, for a higher price, whilst still giving you superb customer service? Call us today to market your property with Whittlesey’s finest Agent!

Are You Going to University This Year? I’ve had a number of people in the past few weeks asking how they should go about choosing a new laptop for their son/daughter who will be starting university this autumn. My usual advice has been to consider the following points: • Try to keep it as lightweight as possible. Your son or daughter will be lugging it around between classes, as well as to and from uni every day, so the lighter the better! • Have a back-lit keyboard, if possible. It is not unusual for students to be burning the mid-night oil in darkened rooms or amphitheatres, so a back-lit keyboard is a very helpful feature to aid typing in those conditions. • Whenever possible, choose a laptop that has either an SSD (solid state disk) or an M.2 e-Sata SSD (the latest electronic solid state type of SSD). Why? Most laptops have a normal HDD (hard disk drive) that consists of spinning platters inside the case, with some very delicate moving parts that do not take kindly to being knocked and bumped whilst working.
Even the slightest damage to these internals can cause data loss. With an SSD or the M.2 SSD they are, effectively, a solid chunk of memory that will withstand being knocked and bumped without any fear of data loss. Another difference between an ordinary HDD and an SSD, is that the SSD will operate at speeds up to six times faster than the ordinary HDD. The M.2 SSD, in turn, operates at least twice as fast as the normal SSD.
• Next to consider is the RAM. If possible, choose a laptop that uses DDR 4 RAM as opposed to DDR 3. Like an SSD, DDR 4 is exponentially faster than DDR 3. With regard to the amount of RAM, the more the better! You should aim for a minimum of 8GB, and 16GB if it remains affordable. • The last thing to consider is the processor and speed (measured in GHz). An Intel i5 will operate and handle computations far, far better than an Intel i3 – providing it is running at speeds above 2.0 GHz.
This month, I’m making a very special offer exclusively to students attending university. I stock the brand new HP 840 G3, Special Edition, with 500 Gb M.2 SSD, Windows 10 Professional installed, 16 Gb DDR 4 RAM, Intel Core i5 with twin 2.5 GHz (Turbos to 2.8 GHz) that are hyper-threaded (to give quad core performance). These carry a three-year manufacturer’s warranty, and usually retail at £1,700. I have been selling them recently for only £750, but for a limited time only I’ll be offering them - with a full software build, including Microsoft Office for just £600. Proof of university acceptance will be required to take advantage of this offer. As a further offer, also only available to university students, I will install on any laptop the full MS Office Professional Package for only £40. Again, proof of university acceptance will be required. Solid State Drives I talk above about the speed of SSDs. By installing one of these little beasties in either a laptop or tower, you’ll significantly improve your computer’s speed. I recently completed an upgrade for a customer (whose HDD had failed completely), who afterwards came back to tell me how much it had improved his computer’s performance. Whereas, prior to the update, he had had to wait about two minutes for the laptop to shut down, and two to three minutes for it to start, it now took a mere twelve seconds to shut down, and less than twenty five to start up! He wished he had done it years previously! To conclude, my recommendation this month is that for optimum performance, an upgrade to your computer’s HDD is really the best thing to do. Thanks for reading, and I look forward to next month’s edition, when I have a special tale to tell.

Stay Safe This Barbecue Season SUMMER’S here – and whatever the weather, we Brits just love our barbecues! A great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the fellas to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. With commentary of the weekend sporting events providing a summery background, what’s not to love? Sadly, some “BBQ bashes” are ruined because of accidents that occur in the garden each year. Last time figures were collected through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/ LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK, having had an accident involving a barbecue.

The most common types of barbecue-related accidents, as shown by the HASS/LASS figures, were: • Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame - 800 • Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200. The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel.

• Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage, and never light it in an enclosed space. • Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Never let children too close to the barbecue. • Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. • If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. • When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy
To protect you, your family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be fire-safety savvy.

• Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture, such as wooden or plastic chairs.
• Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair.

A WORD from the Royal British Legion Our branch has a number of special events coming up in Whittlesey over the next few months. First of all we have our teddy tombola stall at the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday September 10th, with all proceeds going to the Poppy Appeal. We have had a stall at the Festival almost every year, and we keep our fingers crossed for another dry day! If you have any cuddly toys in good condition that you can bear to part with, they are always welcome.
Annual Art Week at Thorpe Hall Local amateur artists are once again being given the opportunity to paint in beautiful surroundings and gather tips from experts at the annual Art Week, staged at Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough. This year, the spotlight will also be shining on creations by children from West Town Primary Academy, who will be hosting an exhibition showing their artwork inspired by the hospice, mansion house and gardens. Art Week has been a regular fixture in the summer calendar at Thorpe Hall for fourteen years, attracting hundreds of artists from across the region keen to learn new skills from experienced tutors. The event is running from August 14th to 18th, and is organised to raise funds for the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. The children's art exhibition is being held from Tuesday 15th to Thursday 17th, from 10am until 4pm, with a suggested donation on entry of £2.
The next event is a ‘Late Summer Special Dance’ at the Ivy Leaf Club on Friday September 15th. There will be entertainment by Jukebox Legends and Charlie Chaplin, so we can expect a fantastic mix of music to dance to. Also included is a carved meat buffet. The ticket price is only £12.00 per person and can be purchased from Wally Newman (01733 351055), Pauline Edge (01733 208414) or Sue Brown at the Ivy Leaf Club (01733 202579). Remember, you don’t have to be a member to come to our events. Moving onward, but not so far away now, is our Christmas Dance on Friday December 8th. Details of the dance and tickets will be available at a later date. Finally, we have fixed a date for our next Annual Dinner Dance and Presentation evening – this will be on Friday February 23rd 2018. Volunteer fundraiser and Art Week organiser, Linda Dalton, said: “We love to see our regular artists who return each year, but are especially pleased to welcome new people to the event. The atmosphere is always great – plenty of learning and lots of fun. We are so grateful to the tutors who give their time so generously to help us.” Booking forms are available now by emailing linda.dalton@sueryder.org. 44

A Good Cause for Celebration In celebration of the fiftieth birthday of the owner of the ten Excelcare care homes in Cambridgeshire, staff, visitors and residents of some of the homes completed a sponsored 50-mile ‘exercise’ bike ride. Everyone at Excelcare would like to thank all those who sponsored them, and helped to raise an amazing £1600 for local charity No Gain No Pain UK (NGNPUK). The donation will fund the purchase of one and a half syringe drivers for use within the local community. The owner, Mr Ertosun, was extremely proud to have a donation to such a valuable charity made on his behalf. Earlier this year, Mr Ertosun raised well over £10,000 for another charity by walking to base camp on Mount Everest. The money was handed over to NGNPUK by staff at Aliwal Manor (an Excelcare home) in Whittlesey (pictured).
A Good Course for a Good Cause! Pictured are the “Magnificent Four” – Stephen Buddle, Mark Busby, Major John Wells and Paul Grypicz – after their Marvellous Macmillan Golf Marathon. In a feat of golfing endurance that involved over 65,000 steps, seventy two holes, almost sixteen hours, hundreds of swings and putts and plenty of Stableford Points, well over £2,500 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support. The guys were taking part in The Longest Day Golf Challenge, held at The Old Nene Golf and Country Club near Ramsey. The charity is one very close to all of their hearts, and they hope the money raised can help Macmillan to carry on the fantastic work they do. The team would like to thank everyone for their support and for all the donations so far. CHILDREN IN WHITTLESEY GET READY FOR THE SUMMER READING CHALLENGE! - By Steve Barclay MP
W
ith schools across North East Cambridgeshire coming to the end of another academic year, I am delighted to announce the delivery of another successful ‘Read to Succeed’ campaign.
Park Lane
Over the past few months we delivered over 2,500 books to children across the constituency including children in Year 4 and 5 at Alderman Jacobs, New Road and Park Lane, who each received a free, new book to read over the summer holidays. A library token is placed in the back of every book donated, which enables children to take part in reading challenges at their local library, this year’s Summer Reading Challenge Theme being ‘Amazing Animals’. The schools with the most children to complete the Summer Reading Challenge will win prizes such as private cinema screenings at The Light (Wisbech), Leisure Centre Pool Parties and Activity Tickets for Fossils Galore (March). To link in with the animal theme, I arranged with Nestlé Purina PetCare factory (Wisbech) who very generously sponsored for every school in Fenland to be visited by the fantastic ‘Lion New Road
Learners’ who inspired the children with their fantastic and interactive literacy workshops, bringing with them their very own amazing animals for the children to handle! Last year’s campaign resulted in a 16% increase in children taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge at local libraries. Having increased the quantity of books distributed amongst schools this year by over 1000, I am confident that even more children will be inspired to join in with the challenge. If you are happy to share your photos of the Summer Reading Challenge, please tag me on facebook: @stevebarclaymp. In other news, after being informed that Sport England were accepting bids for ‘Local Delivery Partners’, I quickly set up a core team to submit an expression of interest. During the summer break, I will be focussing my energies on helping to prepare a joint bid with Fenland and North East Cambridgeshire for a Sport England pilot. If accepted, the bid would bring a significant grant of £13 million to improve sports facilities in the local area, although there is still much to do, if you don’t try then the funding goes elsewhere!
To find out more about my work in Parliament and campaigns locally, or to let me know your views, please visit my website at www.stevebarclay.net. Alternatively you can follow me on:

Church Matters
Daily Prayer In last month’s article I spoke about prayers of intercession. This led to a conversation about regular daily prayer. For some this might well entail periods of time in the morning and the evening, and perhaps in the middle of the day. These times of prayer will include acts of praise, sorrow, intercession and thanksgiving. In the conversation I was asked about a simple and easy-to-remember daily pattern of prayer. The most straightforward tradition involves the Lord’s Prayer said at regular times of day, for example in the morning, at midday and at bedtime.
“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.” The tradition allows for the prayer to be said up to seven times a day. There was a time not so long ago when many people would have known this prayer off by heart; not so these days, and hence I encourage you to use it in your daily lives. God bless you all Reverend Nigel

The Curse of Loneliness Looking back over my childhood, which compared with today’s opportunity-filled modern society had limited offerings to occupy a young life, I can understand why some struggle with those who say they are lonely.
leaving you in a total pit of despair. The good news is, it doesn’t have to. No one is asking you to turn your life around completely on your own. Make the decision to head to Broad Street this Sunday, and begin your journey to a brighter future.
But the fact is that loneliness is real to thousands in our nation; a curse that should be experienced by no one. The Independent newspaper dubbed Britain ‘the loneliness capital of Europe’.
As a church, we endeavour to create activities which are relevant to a wide range of age groups, all of them free to attend - from Little Angels Moms & Tots groups every Tuesday and Thursday morning and afternoon during term times, to the Lighthouse Gang Holiday Club for 4-9 year-olds during the last week of July. Then there is the popular ‘Pastime’ group for those aged fifty plus, meeting each Wednesday from 10am to noon.
One report shows loneliness growing at an alarming rate, especially among smart, digitally-savvy and successful 20-30 year-olds. In 2011, a staggering 86% confessed to feeling isolated, lonely and depressed. In 2014, a study found that among the 18-24 age group, one in every four were four times more likely to feel lonely all the time, compared to those aged seventy and above. I call loneliness ‘a curse’ because that’s what it is. It will destroy your life, health and state of mind,
Every Sunday at 10.45am there is a dynamic, lively but meaningful service for all ages and cultures, where you will find it difficult to walk in without being made welcome – unless, of course, you choose to isolate yourself.

Local History
The Great War in Whittlesey - by Connor Martin Part 9: John Thomas Redding This month’s article is on Private John Thomas Redding, also known as Jack, whose fascinating story came to light when his great niece, Glynis, kindly got in touch with us recently. Born sometime between 1892 and 1894 to parents George and Mary Elizabeth Redding, John was brought up at 89 Windmill Street. Like many young men across the country, he joined the Army in 1914 with the ‘Whittlesea Pal’s Battalions’ after the call to arms, training in the Felixstowe area. Letters sent to his family at the time tell us that he was with the British Expeditionary Force (the army sent to the Western Front) in January 1915, and by December had been dispatched to Egypt to help defend the country from the Ottoman Empire and the German Imperial Army. In October 1916 John was engaged with the Bulgarians; he writes: “Our big guns started to work and you should see the dust fly, likewise Mr Bulger [Bulgaria], we lost a few of our dear comrades but the Bulgers’ losses were very heavy”. John contracted malaria and was in and out of hospital on a regular basis. By August 1917 he was recuperating in a hospital in Malta, to which he had been admitted following a relapse, and waiting to come home. On the 23rd of August he wrote to share the news his family had undoubtedly been waiting for – he was back in England, writing from Addington Park War Hospital, Croydon. After a brief time spent back in Whittlesey, John was posted to the Somme to defend against the Germans’ much-anticipated ‘final push’. That push came in February 1918 as part of the German Spring Offensive and, on the 27th of March 1918, John was killed in the onslaught against the Germans. John’s body was never found, and he became one of the many men whose names were engraved (his is on the Poziers Cemetery) without a proper burial site. When researching these stories I often find that a lack of information results in the personal impact on those left back home being

lost in the mists of time; in this instance, however, we can imagine only too well how John’s family must have suffered, for we know that he left behind his parents and younger siblings Annie, Alice and William. Alice named her only son Jack, as her brother was often known. John’s story is another stark reminder that the First World War spared no one, mercilessly affecting both those on the frontline and their loved ones back home. Once again, it highlights the importance of sharing stories and collaborating resources to remember those who laid down their lives for King and country. I’d like to thank Mrs Glynis Whitbread for contacting us and providing an invaluable wealth of information about her great uncle. Glynis is the granddaughter of John’s sister Alice, and vividly recalls first learning about ‘brother Jack’ while staying with her grandparents in the 60s. “John will never be forgotten by his family. My husband and I have visited the Poziers Cemetery twice, and we plan to return with our son and his family next year. John’s three-times great nephew will also pay his respects during a school trip to the Somme this year.”

Matters One for the Road! Saturday July 1st saw another good turnout for Street Pride, as fourteen of us attended a litter-pick in fine, sunny weather. Basing ourselves at Gothic House, we collected a large amount of litter from Eastrea Road and the areas leading to Decoy Lakes. The number of discarded alcoholic containers, bottles and cans found was quite unbelievable! At the time of writing we look forward to our next litter-picking event at Morton’s Leam, on the Thorney Road, on July 15th. New volunteers are always very welcome to come and join us, so if you think you could spare an hour or two we’d love to hear from you.
We bring you items of interest for your home and community. If there is something you’d like us to cover or you have something to say please get in touch at: Discovering Whittlesea, Benwick Road Ind. Est., Benwick Road, Whittlesey, Peterborough, PE7 2HD

Trip Back in Time for Ladysmith WI In July, members enjoyed a visit to the wonderful Ramsey Rural Museum. There was such a lot to see and after browsing the ‘shops’ and various collections, there was much reminiscing over a delicious afternoon tea. Our annual ‘Bring and Share’ picnic takes place at the next meeting on Tuesday August 8th, at 7.30pm, and Sandra will demonstrate a flower decoration in a cup and saucer (bring your own, though flowers will be provided). The competition will be our finished results on the evening. Also planned is an auction of garden produce and other items. Our last auction was great fun and a wide variety was brought along for the sale. As always, new members and guests are very welcome to come along. For more information call Sue on 01733 205927, Liz on 01733 689599 or visit our Facebook page.
Hats Off to a Great Meeting! June showcased our members' artistic sides, when we all made sugar craft roses a sweet evening! It was hats on at our July meeting when we tried on some lovely headwear, after an enjoyable insight into how they are made. Our August meeting will feature Safe Local Traders and September’s is a talk on defibrillators. Tickets are still available for our barbecue on Sunday September 3rd - Adults £5.00 and children under ten £3.00.
Over-50s Welcome to Join Friendship Group Pictured below, are members of Whittlesey’s Friendship Group on their recent trip to Sandringham and Hunstanton. The group meets every Saturday throughout the year at the Methodist United Reformed Church in Queen Street, 2pm-4pm. All over-50s are welcome.

he face of Whittlesey Athletic has changed significantly since last season, and we wanted to take this opportunity to let you all know what we’ve been up to since May.
We now have new Co-Chairpersons in the form of David Moore and Gary Munns, along with a new Vice-Chairperson in Tom Owen. They all bring with them a wealth of experience of local football and knowledge of running successful businesses in the area. We also have a very strong, experienced Committee, but are always looking for new people with fresh ideas. Get in touch if you want to be part of the plans we have for the next few years. The entire Committee has a range of exciting aspirations for the next five years, which promise to bring fantastic opportunities for both the club and local community. Development plans for our Feldale ground include the creation of additional changing facilities, a large permanent clubhouse structure, seated stands and standing areas for spectators, and the implementation of floodlights - to name but a few! The new football season has already started for us, and once again we will be running four senior men’s sides in the Peterborough & District Football League. If you’re looking a new club to play for, it’s not too late to join. We train every Tuesday and Thursday night at Feldale, from 6.45pm. Please contact us via Facebook, Twitter or our website for further details. 56

Our league games start from Saturday August 5th, and there will be home games played every Saturday at both Feldale and the Manor until May. Why not come down and support the lads as they aim for success this year? The bar will also be open! Aside from the football, one of our priorities is to create a fantastic facility that can be used by the entire community. We would really love this to be something for Whittlesey and the surrounding parishes to be proud of, and want to be involved with. We will be looking for community groups, other clubs and sports teams to call this their home in the future. To achieve our goals, we need your support! Help from every person or business really does make a difference. Please get in contact with us if there something you can help with, whether it’s volunteering, sponsorship or supporting our fundraising events. We are in the process of creating a calendar of events, details of which will be released soon, and watch out for regular updates from us in future issues of Discovering Whittlesea! Holidaying with Your Pet This Summer? Summer time – and at last holiday season is upon us; sunshine, walks on the beach, strolls through the forest and perhaps even a trip abroad await many of us over the coming weeks. When enjoying a family holiday many of us now take our pets along too, both at home and abroad. With many guesthouses and holiday destinations now accepting pets, it’s become much easier to take them on holiday, but it’s important to ensure that we are taking them as much for their benefit as our own. Pets are creatures of habit, and can get stressed in new surroundings. While some animals are happy anywhere, many pets like to have their own space and familiar places. If using boarding kennels, check your pet’s vaccination status to see if they need their kennel cough vaccine. If you are considering taking your pet abroad, the best thing to do is to contact the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for advice on any vaccinations and flea, worm or tick treatments that may be required. Certain countries might have their own specific conditions and requirements when it comes to bringing animals in. Your vet is unlikely to be in a position to give solid advice here – given the huge number of countries and their different rules – and so speaking to DEFRA is the best course of action. Taking your pet abroad has its problems with passports and extra blood tests, but don’t forget that there are also many issues to consider even when holidaying in the UK. Unfamiliar surroundings, new 60

places to sleep, unusual sounds and smells, new flora and fauna and perhaps different temperatures could all be of potential concern to your pet. Small things such as different-tasting water and things that might be picked up and eaten on a walk could potentially give your pet a touch of the ‘Delhi Belly’, but a few days of bland food should sort this out. Failing this, a trip to the closest vet would be in order. New fauna such as cows or sheep can be very disconcerting for a pet that hasn’t come across them before, and for a brave dog, they can be a good game – please don’t let your dog chase farm animals, as they run the risk of being shot by the farmer. You should also look out for snakes. The UK and Europe are home to only one venomous snake, the European viper (adder), but if you and your pet travel further afield they are numerous. Snakes generally wish to be left alone and will disappear sooner than stand and fight, but some dogs are nosey and will want to play with them. This is when bites occur. If your dog is bitten, keep them calm and cool, carry them to the car (if possible) and get them to a vet. So there you have it – some good advice to bear in mind if you’re planning on holidaying with your pet this summer. Have a lovely holiday! AUGUST 2017

School News Diabetes Awareness at Coates School Ella, a pupil at Coates Primary School, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was seven years old. Now aged ten, she has learned to cope with the daily ups and downs of diabetes. Ella doesn’t let her medical condition stop her achieving the things she loves to do – she has two horses, rides in shows and also enjoys ballet and dance. Coates School decided to hold a fundraising day to raise awareness of diabetes in children, and also to support the excellent charity, Diabetes UK, in their fight to find a cure for this life-long medical condition. The photo shows Ella and her friends dressed in blue, the Diabetes UK colour, which was aptly chosen by Ella herself. We raised an impressive £170.30!
A Day on the Farm! The Year One children from the Squirrel and Fox classes at Park Lane Primary School travelled to Church Farm in Stow Bardolph, Norfolk, as a fantastic finish to their topic ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’. The children had a wonderful time exploring the farm park and meeting a whole host of different animals, from lively goats and fluffy lambs, to enormous pigs and cute little chickens. Children also experienced a tractor ride around the park, where they all had the chance to help feed a couple of greedy pigs. Mr. Chisholm, Year One teacher at Park Lane, said, “It was wonderful to see all the children having a chance to get up close to and interact with so many different animals. It was clear from the beaming smiles on all the children's faces that they had a fabulous trip!” If meeting all the amazing animals wasn't enough, the children also had a wonderful time exploring and clambering around the hay barn, sliding through the adventure tree house and bouncing on trampolines.

New Road’s Delight as Netball Shield Comes Home The Netball High 5 Competition is a yearly event organised by Janette Bowden (PE Co-ordinator for New Road School), and has been running for three years so far. Unfortunately Coates School could not attend this year, but Alderman Jacobs, Park Lane and New Road each took two teams of Year Four, Five and Six children to the competition, which was held at AJS. A and B team pools were played and New Road School won in both pools, meaning that for the first time to date, New Road took the shield back to their school. Their name will be engraved on it as winners for 2017, and it will stay at the school for a year. The shield was originally purchased three years ago by the Friends of New Road School. ll children received England Netball certificates (as A Janette also works for the England governing body), medals and trophies. All the children had a great time, and the weather was lovely and sunny! We’re already looking forward to the next year’s competition!
It’s Great to be Good! Alderman Jacobs School is feeling very proud of its recent Ofsted report, which graded the school as ‘Good’ in all areas. Headteacher Mrs Carlisle shared the exciting news with the children in a celebratory assembly, and told them they would receive an extra, special playtime and treat. The report states that ‘pupils are now making good progress across the school’ and ‘there is a good partnership between home and school’. The curriculum has been described as ‘rich and varied’ and is one which ‘helps to make learning fun’. “We are all delighted with the report, not only for ourselves, but for our town too,” said Mrs Carlisle, who is pictured (right) with Chair of Governors Mrs Laura Holland. To read the full report visit our website, or to enquire about places at the school, ring 01733 202403. AUGUST 2017
“You Okay?” This is such a simple question, yet one that is potentially life-changing. Often the response will be “Yeah”, followed by “It’s just…”, and there you have it; the opportunity to open up and share. We all know the feeling of needing to talk to someone, but struggling to know how. If you’re worried about someone, take a moment to ask if they’re okay. If your concern is about a young person aged between 11 and 16, then we can help. At YPCS, we offer up to twelve free counselling sessions per child, with trained counsellors across five locations in Peterborough. At the heart of everything we do is a passion to help young people who are in desperate need of support. We’ve started using the hashtag #uok because we feel that sometimes, saying something so simple can start the conversation that could be life changing. ‘U OK?’ is about helping young people to share their feelings and problems, so that loved ones can get them the right support and turn things around. No one should suffer in silence. We are a not-for-profit charity dedicated to supporting our young community with their mental health issues. Our sole aim is to prove free,
A U GUS T 2 017
accessible, confidential counselling to young people that need it. We are constantly fundraising to keep the charity going and spread awareness of our services. Over the last year we’ve had some fantastic support from the local community, businesses and individuals, including events such as the Great Yaxley Firewalk, the Slimming World Ball and the Big Band Night at the Key Theatre, to name but a few. Still to come this year, we have a skydive event and a couple competing in the Great Eastern Run on our behalf. Thank you to everyone who supports us – we are truly humbled. Start the conversation today. It really will make a difference.

Local History
Bishop Aethelwold
- by Jen Barback, Curator of Whittlesey Museum
Did you know that one of the first recorded landowners in Whittlesey was a Saint? Bishop Aethelwold was one of the three most important religious figures in the country at the time, along with men named Dunstan and Oswald. They were all advisors to King Edgar, who confirmed the Thorney land gift in the year 973. Aethelwold was a tonsured Benedictine monk who held the positions of Abbot of Abingdon between 954 and 963, and was later Bishop of Winchester until his death in 984. He was considered a Saint after St Swithhun “commanded him in vision to open his (Swithun’s) tomb in the Old Minster (of Winchester), and showed his benevolence towards Aethelwold through miracles”, with miraculous healing attributed to the Bishop during his lifetime and afterward at his grave in Winchester Cathedral. His feast is celebrated on August 1st. As a Benedictine, Aethelwold held strong views that the secular clergy were “filth”, unfit to serve altars or engage in any form of divine service, because many of them were married and they did not follow a monastic rule. He famously drove clerics out of the New Minster of Winchester and replaced them with monks, and he very actively bought up vast amounts of land across the country for the Benedictine Church. His cathedral was chosen for the burial of the incoming King Cnut, also with ties to the Whittlesey area. Records show that in the late 960s the lands associated with Whittlesey St. Mary (known as
70
D I S C O V E R I N G
a ‘manor’) were bought up from their local Saxon owners by the Biahop Aethelwold of Winchester, and then gifted to the Benedictine monastic community at Thorney. Aethelwold bought “half the island of Whittlesey” from Leofsige, son of Ælfsige, for 40lbs of silver and an estate of six hides (180 acres) at Bygrave, Herts. In modern terms, 40lb of silver would cost around £8000 but around 500 new-build houses could potentially be fitted onto a 180 acre plot. The bishop also bought “twothirds of one half of the island of Whittlesey” along with two-thirds of Whittlesey Mere from a man named Ufi “and his brothers” for 30lbs of silver (around £6000). Aethelwold also bought other land from Ufi and his mother Aswig in other transactions, paying 28p per acre for twenty acres elsewhere. At around the same time, the records of Ely Cathedral describe how another Saxon, Leofwine, “gave his son, Aethelmaer, to Ely along with Kingston, the Rodings, Undley, Lakenheath, a third part of Whittlesey, Eastrea, Cottenham, part of London called Abboteshai, Glemsford, the fishery at Upstaue, and an annual food-rent from the royal
Whittlesea
estate at Hatfield, and other grants besides. It was sworn that this land would never be alienated from Ely.” This Whittlesey land became the somewhat smaller manor of St. Andrew’s Church. Having Whittlesey divided between the two monastic communities of Thorney and Ely laid the foundation for the modern parish structure, and the two churches which we see today. Come and see us during the summer holiday for the final month of our ‘Response and Rescue’ exhibition about the history of the emergency services. Whittlesey Museum, Market St, Whittlesey. Opening hours: Friday 2.30-4.30pm Saturday 10am-12 noon Sunday 2.30-4.30pm £1 Adults/50p Children Editor’s retraction: Last month’s What’s On guide advertised a series of local history talks taking place at Whittlesey Museum on Tuesdays throughout July and August. Please note that these are in fact taking place at the Eastrea Centre, and are not affiliated with the Museum. Our apologies for any confusion caused.

Finance
Social Care Policy by Eamonn Dorling
Although the popular press has frequently used the phrase ‘dementia tax’, long-term care can affect a much wider range of individual difficulties across a wide spectrum of ages; I will therefore use the term ‘social care’ in this piece. The government has a duty to provide care when individuals are in need. Individuals retain the right to arrange their own care, which might include NHS care and/or private services. The first stage will usually be a care assessment – this may be initiated by the individual, or more commonly by social services, often at the request of a General Practitioner (GP) doctor.
Trusts, power of attorney, pension’s benefits and wills can all have an impact on the financial implications of social care. Legislation may put limits on the level of contributions that an individual makes to the two aspects that make up the funding of long-term care: accommodation costs (sometimes referred to as hotel costs), and nursing care (this reflects the delivery of an individual’s care assessment).
The care assessment is carried out without any reference to finance, because the care required must reflect the needs of that individual. The second stage is the financial assessment, in which social services look at how best to deliver the care package and who is going to pay for it.
An important point is that if a local authority funds care, they also have the right to decide how and where the care package is to be delivered, mindful that they are using public money and must obtain best value for money. On the other hand, any individual might find a ‘funding arrangement’ so that care can be delivered in the way that suits the individual best. The preservation of an estate can be a complicated matter where qualified advice should be taken.
If the individual has modest income and/or savings, it may be the responsibility of the local authority to fund the care package. On the other hand, the individual may be deemed capable of affording their own care.
A good starting point is to use an independent signpost to a qualified specialist adviser. The Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) would be a good example: www.societyoflaterlifeadvisers. co.uk/Find-an-adviser
As is often the case, matters are seldom this simple. The NHS might provide ‘Continuing Care’ funding regardless of the individual’s wealth – compliance is need-driven. The assets that belong to an individual might not be included in a financial assessment, and advice may be helpful here. Jointly owned assets need careful management because the surviving spouse or partner may be harshly dealt with without good advice.

The Local Music Scene
The After Party? - by Dave Bailey
Last month we looked at performance enhancers, and now we look at the review. The gig went well, the sound was good… but did it hit the spot? Having kept a mental note of the crowd’s reaction to the set, it’s important to remember which songs went well, and which ones bombed. The thing to remember is that not all audiences will respond in the same way, and the size and demographic of the attendees will contribute to their reaction. Rousing singalong rock numbers may not get the same response if played to a small audience; similarly, a big group of young clubbers may not find an acoustic ballad inspires them to rock till they drop. The key to improving is the ability to adapt to the venue and the audience. Often it will be necessary to drop, add or change the order of a set list, once up and dancing, to a style more likely to keep them on the dance floor. Though reaction is a key part of the analysis of your set, do not turn it into an autopsy and do not beat yourself up if you did not get the adulation of a headline act at Glastonbury. Crowd reaction and interaction is, after all, a two-way street. 74
D I S C O V E R I N G

Focus on the positives and use that to improve on any low points or performance issues. Having identified what the crowd liked, try to remember the parts that the band thought needed improving (timing, chord changes, harmonies, stage presence etc.). All these points can be looked at, discussed and worked on in the rehearsal room. Self-critique also needs to be impersonal. Nothing destroys a band’s relationship quicker than harsh words. Suggestions need to be tactful, constructive and it is important that they are taken on board in order that they can be worked on. Try to discuss rationally, openly and if possible, honestly. If a particular problem is proving difficult to crack, take a break and work on something else like new material, then come back to it later. As it is festival time and lots of venues are looking for acts, try something new to retain enthusiasm, such as an acoustic set stripped down to basics with a cajon and electro acoustics. Build on the use of harmonies and hand percussion. Keep it fresh and fun! Local open mic listings can be found at www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm AUGUST 2017

THE ALL-NEW
FORD KUGA AT T.C.HARRISON FORD
REFRESHED DESIGN WITH MORE PERFORMANCE AND EFFICIENCY The new Kuga is sharper, more sturdy, and ultimately more aggressive than its predecessor, and packed full of new and upgraded technologies like brake assist and paddle shift gears. But don’t worry, everything you loved about the old Kuga is still to be found within the updated model. A new 1.5 TDCi 120ps diesel engine has been added to the Ford Kuga line-up, which results in improved fuel use and fewer emissions. Other innovative technologies include direct fuel injection, turbocharging and Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing. Together, they help make the engine responsive, smooth and lively which results in a highly engaging drive. Check out more on the Ford Kuga at www.tch.co.uk
