Introduction

Welcome to Your December Issue. These past few weeks I’ve been inundated with stories from local individuals, groups and charities, which you can read in the various news sections of the magazine. From ‘lost rivers’ to supermarket trolley dashes, there’s never a dull moment when working on Discovering Whittlesea! It’s always a pleasure to hear from you, so please do keep your contributions coming as we head into 2018. The Whittlesey Christmas Extravaganza takes place this month, and it promises to be a fantastic festive evening. There’ll be all kinds of stalls and attractions around the Market Place, and of course the wonderful St. Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival will also be running that weekend. You don’t want to miss it!

Matters Pupils’ Plea to Make Playgrounds Smoke Free No-smoking posters designed by children from three local primary schools are on display at parks and playgrounds across the district, asking people not to light up where children play. The colourful designs were created as part of a school poster competition, organised by Fenland District Council as part of its Tidy Fenland campaign to tackle environmental issues. Youngsters at Park Lane, Whittlesey, Orchards Primary in Wisbech and Westwood Primary in March were asked to design posters which would encourage people to respect gated play areas, with messages around no smoking, as well as no littering and no dog fouling.

Annual Quiz and Supper is a Resounding Success Whittlesey Conservatives recently held their popular annual quiz night with fish & chips supper. The six rounds of questions (plus two bonus rounds) posed by Quizmaster Robert Windle tested even the most experienced quizzers, but of the eleven teams who took part it was B Team who came out on top to win the small financial prize. Chairman of Whittlesey Conservatives, Mrs Julie Windle, was delighted with the number of participants, and thanked The Royal Fish Bar, Whittlesey for providing the supper. £360 was raised for party funds. The next event is the Christmas Fayre on Saturday December 16th, at the Whittlesey Conservative Club, between 10am and 1pm. There will be stalls and Christmas music from a local choir, as well as tea, coffee and mince pies. This is all included in the entrance fee of £3, while children enter for free. Anybody wishing to purchase tickets in advance should contact Julie Windle on 01733 204445. Stall spaces are available at £5 a stall. More details can be found by searching for Whittlesey Conservatives on Facebook. Photo: The quizzers contemplating the answers (courtesy RWT Photography)

The competition proved popular, with hundreds of pupils getting involved. The winners – one at Westwood, one at Orchards and two joint winners at Park Lane - were presented with certificates, and their designs were made up into large boards and put on display at seventeen Fenland locations. Councillor Mike Cornwell, Fenland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities, said: “Getting children involved in our efforts to stop smoking in children’s play areas has been a great success. The posters have made a big difference and really encouraged people to make a conscious effort about being smoke-free in those areas.” “If you want to stop smoking and need help, please contact CamQuit on 0800 018 4304 or visit www.camquit.nhs.uk.”

Councillor surgeries will be held in Grosvenor House from 9.30am to 10.30am on the first Saturday of every month throughout 2017. Councillors present on Saturday December 2nd will be: Councillor Ralph Butcher (District and Town Councillor) Councillor Eamonn Dorling (Town Councillor) If you have any matters of concern and wish to discuss them with a Councillor, then please come along and let us know.

Park Lane Remembers Students at Park Lane School proudly took place in a Remembrance display on Friday, November 10th. The children have all had the opportunity to learn about poppies and Armistice Day, appropriate to their age group. When preparing the display the children were incredibly wellbehaved and showed a respect and understanding for the importance of this act of remembrance. Following the display, they took part in a two-minute silence, where they reflected on the wonderful work of our armed forces.

Health

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better

Breathing We all understand that breathing involves taking in oxygen, but is this its only role? Interestingly, the answer is no. Removing carbon dioxide Our breathing rate is determined by our need to remove carbon dioxide from our bodies, not our need for oxygen. Our blood always contains excess oxygen, such that we only use a small proportion during our daily activities. However, the accumulation of waste gases produced by our cells (e.g. carbon dioxide) makes our blood more acidic and cannot be tolerated by our bodies. Breathing removes carbon dioxide, and so our breathing rate is dependent on how much we need to remove. Returning blood to the heart Interestingly, breathing is the second most important reason for our blood flow (the first, of course, being our heart). If it was not for breathing, our blood would form pools in our legs! The heart pushes the blood around the body, whilst breathing sucks the blood back up. It achieves this by creating pressure differentials in the body, in a similar fashion to how we suck fluid up through a straw.

Strengthening heartbeats The heart is securely fastened within the ribcage via various attachments to the surrounding skeletal and muscular structures. One of these structures is the diaphragm, which moves during breathing and pulls the bottom part of the heart with it. Therefore the chambers of the heart get stretched, which makes the contraction stronger. Mobilising our organs Directly beneath our diaphragm are our abdominal organs (stomach, liver, etc.). As our diaphragm descends and rises at a set frequency (i.e. breathing), it creates a rhythmical wave which travels through our organs. This motion maintains our organs’ mobility and hence health. Emotion Behavioural breathing is how our breathing responds to changes in our emotions, for instance when we are nervous or angry. The reverse is also true, in that breathing can alter our emotions. A good example is when parents instruct their upset children to take deep breaths in an attempt to calm them down. It is this link between breathing and emotion which the parents are using.

Whittlesey Firefighter Celebrates Retirement A local firefighter is looking forward to a well-earned retirement, as he steps down after twenty-two years.

In Memory of Kevin Bassam Kevin Bassam was a well-known gentleman in Whittlesey for many years. He set up K B Motors with his father in 1977, and his son Paul, a partner for twenty years, will be continuing the family business. When Kevin was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer, it came as a huge shock to him and his family. His wife Janet and daughter Sarah cared for him at home for the last four weeks of his life, with support from the district nurses.

Fifty-two-year-old, Russ Moon has been an on-call crew commander at Whittlesey Fire Station for twelve years, and before that spent ten years at Chatteris. His long service with Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue was recognised with a special presentation at Whittlesey Fire Station on November 7th. Russ said: “I’ve enjoyed being part of such a great team and have built some great friendships. It’s been a privilege to provide such a professional service to the local community.”

Football Funding Continues to Deliver

Kevin’s last few days were made more comfortable by the use of a syringe driver that was donated by NGNPUK, to whom the family will be eternally grateful. A syringe driver is a device used in palliative care. It’s a box that is attached to the patient by a needle, through which drugs can be administered to give a constant flow of pain relief.

Robert Windle, Peterborough Referees Association Chairman, has continued with his visits to local Whittlesey primary schools. Thanks to funding from the Burnt House Wind Farm, local schools have received not only a brand new sack of ten footballs, marker cones, bibs and a ball pump, but also fun tuition.

Without these devices, patients have to wait for a nurse to attend to administer countless injections every time they are in pain. This causes distress to both the patient and their family, and results in a lot of waiting about when time is crucial. These devices can also help people to remain at home in their final days, instead of going into hospital or a hospice, as their pain can be successfully managed.

Additional items such as portable goals have also been purchased to give the pupils a greater experience. The key topics of learning have been about respect, sportsmanship and fair play with an understanding of the role of the match official. Photo: Alderman Jacobs School (courtesy RWT Photography)

In Kevin’s memory, £1510 was raised and donated to NGNPUK to purchase a syringe driver for use in the local community, and his family will continue to fundraise for the charity to help this worthy cause. For more information about syringe drivers and how they are used in the local community, visit www.ngnpuk.weebly.com or contact them at NoGainNoPainUK@gmail.com. d e c em b er 2017

Power-Brush Deep Clean Service from 3D Grass We all know how a deep clean of our carpets freshens them and removes ingrained dirt. Artificial grass is an outdoor carpet and should be treated in the same way. It is advisable to have a deep clean annually to keep it fresh, clean and looking great. Although you may remove leaves and things you see on the surface, and regularly spray a disinfectant on the surface (especially all you pet owners out there) there is, like with your indoor carpets, dirt that gets ingrained. The cost is very similar to a deep clean of your indoor carpets and is well worth the regular maintenance. Here at 3D Grass, we will come out to you to give your artificial grass that deep clean, with our sophisticated machine and chemicals, and we offer a friendly and very competitive service. Call us on 01733 390411 for a no-obligation quote.

Top Tips for Buying Electronics This Christmas Welcome to the final edition before Christmas. Firstly, I’d like to advise that with immediate effect, the shop is no longer open on Mondays, and on Sunday the shop will only be open from 12pm to 4pm, rather than from 10am. All other opening hours remain the same: Tuesday-Friday 8.30am5.30pm, and Saturdays 10.00am-4.00pm.

upwards of £200 on a console, you want to know it’s the best you can get for the price! Currently, the console of choice for both the casual and elite gamer would be the Xbox One X. With its 1TB of internal storage and 12GB of ram, it will power through any game you want to play.

We’ll be closing for the Christmas period on Friday, December 15th, and will reopen on Monday, January 8th.

TV streaming As you may be aware, the main issue here is ‘copyright’ and the actions of internet providers to block you from downloading such content. It is our intention to start providing boxes with a built-in VPN (Virtual Private Network), which prevents internet providers from ‘seeing’ your internet data. These are likely to be priced at £110 (but watch this space, as I await the outcome of legal advice I have sought!).

It’s at this time of year that you’ll most likely find yourself buying new gadgets such as laptops, iPads and various other items. When looking for these goods it would be worthwhile to consider the following: Apple iPads In my experience, if your iPad is going to go wrong it will most likely do so at between 13 and 15 months old. Therefore, when buying one you should always look for an outlet that will provide you with a two year warranty. Laptops You really do get what you pay for. Most new Laptops in the £229-£329 range have small hard disks and slow processors that run at 1.6 GHz. Look for a laptop with, say, an Intel i3 processor running at 2.0 GHz and above, and if it has an ‘Atom’ processor, remember that these processors are really designed for tablets, not laptops. Also remember the additional costs you will face to install Microsoft Office and anti-virus software. We usually have a good stock of second-hand laptops which will come with all the software you should need. Games consoles Children and adults alike will be asking for the latest console for Christmas, keen to play all the newest games with their friends. But if you’re spending

Wireless internet With all these additional electronics in your home, it may be that you have insufficient capacity for all your electronics, or that there are ‘dead zones’ in your home. An internet wireless extender will fix this problem. Just call in and I’ll be happy to explain. Laptop running slow? If you’re thinking of buying a new laptop because you are tired of your current one’s speed, there is an alternative. Why not consider bringing your laptop in to us for a complete tune-up? Better still, treat yourself to a new SSD (Solid State Drive) and see your laptop absolutely fly! Finally, a very special thank you to all my customers who have supported me since I started in my office in High Causeway, and following my move to the new shop. Happy computing, and a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our readers. Len, Deborah and Oliver

This Land is My Land... The Case for Voluntary Land Registration - by Kieren Cross

Is your land registered? If not, can this really cause you problems? Having unregistered land can create an increased risk of fraud and cause inheritance issues. If you have owned your land since 1990, and have not subsequently taken out a mortgage, your land could be unregistered. Traditionally, all land in England and Wales was unregistered, and landowners would keep a bundle of documents and deeds to prove their ownership. In 1925, the government tried to overhaul this system by encouraging voluntary land registration. In 1990, compulsory registration was brought in with any land sale and this was expanded in 2002 to include inherited, gifted or mortgaged land. This has been partially successful; Land Registry data from 2016 showed that 17% of all land in the UK remains unregistered. The Land Registry is now encouraging everyone to register their land, but many people still don’t see the need, especially with property that has remained within the same family. However, registration brings significant advantages. You will be better protected against fraud. If your land is unregistered, a fraudster could assume your identity then register and sell or mortgage the property without your knowledge. Squatters have rights, and can become the legal owners of abandoned property over time. Information online shows how to search for unregistered land, detailing squatting rights and the land registration process. With registered land, you are better protected.

If all or part of the deeds to your land are lost, destroyed or forged, it is difficult to prove ownership of unregistered land. However, with centrally registered land, there is a permanent record of your ownership. When dealing with the estate of a loved one, it can sometimes be difficult to locate title deeds, but having registered land saves additional problems at this difficult time. Land registration is easier when the owner is alive and can provide a Statutory Declaration, explaining how the deeds became misplaced. If two adjoining plots of land are unregistered, the owner of the first plot to be registered could set disputed boundaries in their favour. Once registered, it can be difficult and costly for the neighbour to reverse this when they register their land. The Land Registry is currently offering a discount on the cost of voluntary land registration. This discount will not be applied in the case of compulsory registration which is required when the land is gifted, mortgaged or sold. Having your land registered simplifies the conveyancing process which should reduce costs when selling or mortgaging the land. The government may bring in mandatory registration in the future, and they would be unlikely to retain the discount on registration fees and could even raise them significantly. Fraser Dawbarns have experts who can advise or assist you with land registration. For further help, contact us today to see how we can help provide you with peace of mind. Kieren Cross is a Partner in the Agriculture and Private Client departments at Fraser Dawbarns.

Time to Celebrate a Fantastic Year - By Steve Barclay MP

2

017 has been a fantastic year for Whittlesey, and Fenland as a whole. Fenland and East Cambridgeshire have been selected as one of just twelve areas in the country to be designated as an ‘Opportunity Area’, bringing the area an extra £6 million of funding. Additionally, our schools will have priority access to other Department of Education funding, which is a game-changing opportunity for education in our area and I look forward to sharing how the initiative progresses with you. As many constituents will know, I am passionate about healthcare in North East Cambridgeshire and was delighted to be able to ensure our healthcare remained local by protecting our Minor Injury Unit in Doddington and securing pilot status for them to become rural care hubs. I also successfully campaigned for the intermediate care beds in Doddington Court to be made available for the use of constituents. ‘Read to Succeed’ has had another successful year, and the campaign has gone from strength to strength. Thanks to the kind donations from our community, over 2,500 Year Five and Six children received a new book to read during the school summer holidays, over 1,000 more books than were donated last year. In addition to this, the libraries in our area saw an increase of children participating in The Summer Reading Challenge, and ‘Yellow Token’ starters from ‘Read to Succeed’ were up on last year by a whopping 51%! Taking part in The Summer Reading Challenge prevents the reading ‘dip’ that often occurs

during the school summer holidays, by encouraging children to read six books of their choice for fun. The yearly increase of Summer Reading Challenge participation in our area means more and more children are returning to school in September ready to learn. Since the General Election, I have persistently called for more late night trains from Cambridge to March, more frequent stops from Cambridge to Whittlesey, Manea and March, and a train line from Wisbech to Cambridge. One of the biggest barriers to achieving this has been the bottleneck at Ely Junction. The Department of Transport commitment to update Ely Junction between 2019 and 2024 will unlock further growth to our area by better connecting residents to jobs in the south of the county. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in Whittlesey and the surrounding area a merry Christmas and a very happy New Year.

Make sure your Christmas stays Merry – not Miserable! “ ‘Tis the season to be jolly” – presents to buy and proudly display under a beautifully decorated tree. However, it may not just be the intended receiver of the gift who takes a shine to the pile of expensive goodies. Christmas is a time when many of us let our guard down, among the excitement leading up to the big day. For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping while loads are being taken into the house, and even the possibility of an unlocked garage, are rich pickings which can turn your Christmas from being “Merry” into “Miserable”! Equally, flaws in home security while out and about visiting friends and family are a beacon to thieves – so always remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked. Some tips for a safe and happy festive season: Don’t leave presents in full view – either in the home or on the back seat of the car. Shorter days mean longer time for thieves to be in operation – always lock your car and front door when entering your home. Keep a light on indoors and outdoors, if you are out visiting friends or family.

It may be an idea to fit some motion detector security lighting – it won’t just be carol singers who come calling. Keep your personal data safe – and securely dispose of receipts. If buying bikes and/or electronic equipment for Christmas, mark them with your postcode. Away over Christmas? Then plan ahead - be sure to cancel any newspaper or milk subscriptions. Arrange for a neighbour to park on the driveway to help create the impression someone is home. Do not leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like “we’re away skiing for the Christmas holidays”, nor post your plans on social media. If using outdoor festive lighting, ensure cables aren’t passed through windows, leaving enough gap for burglars to make use of.

Local History

‘Lost Rivers’ of Whittlesey (Part Two) - by David Hancock, Trustee of Whittlesey Museum

Many of the properties in Horsegate have steps up to their doors – could this suggest they were built on the banks of a river?

It has been suggested that Horsegate was built on the extinct course of a river which, for convenience, we will call Horsegate River. It is noticeable that many of the properties in this street have steps up to their front doors, suggesting they may have been built on the banks of the river. A number of trackways or lanes are just discernible running down to Horsegate, Wades Yard being a prime example. This lane is quite wide and could easily accommodate horses and wagons. The lane may have continued east through Thoroughfare Lane, which still exists, into Market Street and thence to the Market Place. The following statements are conjectural and unless proven otherwise, remain a theory. Horsegate River may have continued along Love Lane, which runs just to the west of St. Andrew’s Church, before joining the Briggate River. Approximately thirty yards before Love Lane terminates at Briggate, the land drops away towards the river. Perhaps this is because Love Lane was not infilled at this point. The mouth of Horsegate River may have silted up naturally, therefore accounting for the difference in height. The remaining ditches along Love Lane are not cut vertically as most ditch banks are, but slope as many river banks do. In a predominantly north-easterly direction, Horsegate River may have continued parallel to Horsegate Lane, across West End and then made a gentle curve into Orchard Street and

Delph. Alluvial deposits were found during the laying of new sewers in Orchard Street. Delph is wide and could possibly have been the site of a dock or boatyard. Possible evidence that Delph is the course of a waterway is the fact that where it crosses the Roman Fen Causeway near the former Morton Fork pub, both Stonald Road and Bassenhally Road slope down in its direction. The river may then have joined the present watercourse which runs parallel to the B1040 road across the Wash, to join Thorney Dyke near the River Nene and on towards Thorney Abbey. Did any of these ‘lost’ waterways exist? The now extinct river that ran south of Whittlesey almost certainly did, but as for the rest? Perhaps. Then again, they may just be a myth. Lurking in some corner of a college, university or museum library, there could be documents that prove their existence! Pets’ Corner

Christmas Hazards - by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre Amongst the merriment and cheer of the festive season, it can be easy to forget that our pets cannot always have what we have. We may need to be extra vigilant with what they are up to, ensuring they are not getting in to Christmas mischief! Chocolate Everyone loves chocolate, and over Christmas it's not uncommon for us to have a lot of it all over the house. Some people give chocolates as gifts, and even though they may seem out of harm’s way when wrapped up under the tree, your dog can probably smell through the wrapping - and what’s more, can easily chew through it. The toxic part of chocolate is theobromine, and the darker the chocolate, the higher the concentration of theobromine. Your pet only needs to ingest a small amount to become ill. Signs can include vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, loss of balance and seizures, and in extreme cases it can even cause death. If you think your pet has eaten chocolate you should contact your vet immediately. Decorations Because decorations look so shiny and exciting, our pets can be tempted to play with and eat them, regardless of the fact they have little or no taste. Our pets may also be tempted to chew through Christmas light wires, and even just a small shock can cause death to smaller animals. Tinsel, ribbons and tree decorations can be easily ingested and become stuck along the digestive tract. It’s rarely a simple procedure to remove, especially when a large amount has been swallowed and it has started to make its way along the intestines.

pets, and if possible it’s safer simply to go with artificial versions. Pine needles on real Christmas trees can cause nasty stomach upsets, and sometimes dogs are inclined to urinate up them. Poinsettias too are lovely, but if ingested can irritate the mouth and stomach. Food It's easy to forget that raisins and alcohol, often found in Christmas puddings and mince pies, are very toxic to our pets. They are often left out for Santa and our furry friends eat them before he gets a chance! Other festive nibbles such as nuts and grapes can also be harmful, causing tremors, staggering and vomiting. Ingredients such as onions and garlic, often included in our Christmas dinners, can be toxic too, so if you're planning to include your companions in the feast, be aware of what’s included! Alcohol As in humans, alcohol can cause intoxication. Even in small amounts, it can affect the liver and brain and lead to respiratory distress, tremors and even death - so ensure the merrymaking is reserved for us humans! Finally, from all the staff at Whittlesey Veterinary Centre, we would like to wish you a very merry Christmas!

Many pet owners have also reported cats climbing and then becoming entangled in lights, tinsel and other decorations. If your pet becomes tightly entangled the decorations can cause deep lacerations and cut off blood circulation; if wrapped around the neck, the outcome can be much worse. Plants We often like to bring pots and wreaths into the house at this time of year, but remember that the berries and leaves of festive favourites such as holly and mistletoe can cause vomiting, convulsions and even death. These are best kept well away from

Church Matters

Celebrating Jesus at Christmas December in the Christian Church is a season of preparation and celebration. It is the time of year to focus on the coming into the world of Jesus and the meaning of this event not only for us, but also for millions of people who follow Jesus all over the world. As Christians, we not only remember the birth of a baby over 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem, Israel, but we also give witness to our faith that Jesus is the Son of God, is alive and really present to us in all that we do today. In Jesus, the divine nature of God and the human nature of each of us come together in a wonderful unity – all that it means to be God and human in the one person of Jesus. The birth of Jesus is often told just as a story for children, so we hear people say

Christmas is just for them. There is truth in this, but just think about the claims we make about Jesus: He is the Son of God. He worked miracles, including bringing the dead to life. He taught with passion and persuasion. He died on a cross and was raised to life. He established the Church. Is this a life story for children? Yes – and for adults too. In fact, the Christmas story is a true story told for adults and to be shared with children. To accept the heart of Christmas is a life changing experience. It means accepting that God sent Jesus to be one with us in our very human and everyday lives. Happy Christmas and a Blessed New Year to you all. Reverend Nigel

Whittlesey Christian Church

So, What’s Christmas All About? I still have vivid childhood memories of some amazing family times over Christmas. Despite limited finances coming into the home, mother would put money away each week from my father’s salary as a fireman, to fund a simple, but great, fun-filled family meal and party on Boxing Day. Mother made it very clear to all her eight children that missing the Boxing Day party was not an option - but then, none of us would want to miss it! Somehow, we seem to have so much more available to us these days, yet sadly, the real purpose of Christmas is becoming increasingly muddled and commercialised. Because of our increasing work in the community and the growing number coming for counselling, it’s obvious that for many, Christmas is becoming an expensive and pressured time, with many going into debt to give their family a good time. This year, why not discover the real meaning behind Christmas? Start by attending one of

our Christmas services, where you may be pleasantly surprised to find that it’s not a boring waste of time. Yes, there is a serious side, but we believe that there is also a fun side to Christianity and life. All departments in our church family are busy preparing a great Christmas presentation for you on Sunday, December 17th at 10.45am. There’ll be something to interest the whole family: the Christian Church dancers and puppeteers (who you will have enjoyed at the Whittlesey Festival); the amazing African Voices; youth and children; Christmas carols and songs; and of course – written especially for the event – a new poem from our very own wonderful in-house poet. You can also join us on Christmas Day, 10.45am, for a short period of songs fellowship and fun. I look forward to welcoming you to our great family.

School News

Bringing the Bible to Life

AJS Goes to the Lions! Pupils at Alderman Jacobs School were recently treated to a visit to London to watch a performance of The Lion King. The trip took months of planning before a group of children and their teachers set off for the Lyceum Theatre. After a little wait and a quick check through security, they were taken to their seats where they made themselves comfortable and waited… The show itself was more than they could have hoped for, and the children’s faces said it all. They were enthralled from start to finish, with only an ice cream to distract from the performance! It was a long day, but the children had a fantastic experience and who knows – the school might do something similar again one day!

Children from Coates Primary School recently spent time learning about the life of Jesus when Whittlesey Baptist Church came to visit. Members from the Church dressed as characters from the New Testament and brought the Bible stories to life for children in Years 4, 5 and 6. The children then took part in a quiz and tasted various foods that would have been available in Jesus' time, including figs, olives and unleavened bread.

Year 5 Gaze into the Galaxy! Year 5 pupils from Park Lane School enjoyed a stimulating and exciting visit to the National Space Museum in Leicester to launch their new topic 'Stargazers'. The children were completely bowled over by the space age appearance of the building, and the wealth of amazing exhibits inside. The rocket tower gave them a try at launching a real rocket of their own, which was trickier than you’d think. The Tranquility Base allowed the children to take part in becoming a trainee astronaut, and they also got to control jet boosters on the 'Micro-GManoeuvre', which was really difficult to do.

All Aboard for New Road Pupils At New Road Primary School, our Hedgehogs Class of Year 2 children recently started their new curriculum topic which focuses on boats and ships. They all walked down to The Bower in Whittlesey to meet Mr Peter Preston, who has a narrowboat on the river. Mr Preston told them all about his boat, and after spending some time looking at its shape, the children drew it using pens and pencils. Miss Marshall and everyone in Hedgehogs class would like to say “thank you very much!” to Mr Preston for so generously giving up his time to talk about his narrowboat, and then allowing the class to draw it. 58

The most fascinating part of visiting the mock-up space station was discovering how the astronauts have to sleep and go to the toilet. The children learned that the liquid waste from the toilet is recycled over a few days and then used as drinking water – a fact that certainly got them thinking about the water cycle! The children then experienced the night sky in the Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium, where they learned about different constellations and saw planets from the Milky Way in more detail. Mrs Sarah Gregory, class teacher, said: "This has been a really exciting start to our new topic. The children got to see first-hand some of the artefacts that have allowed space exploration. They are now really fired up and eager to share what they have discovered back in the classroom." de ce m be r 2 0 1 7

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year? Christmas is often spoken about as something to look forward to: a happy, joyful time of year, when everyone is smiling and every family enjoys the perfect day. For some people this is the case, and many of us may look back at our childhood and remember Christmas as a happy time. Sadly though, for some the reality is often quite different. Some young people may have never experienced, or expect to experience, the wonderful Christmas portrayed on TV and in the movies, where presents and food are in abundance. Instead they may be anticipating a Christmas where parents argue about money and how they are going to afford Christmas presents. Perhaps there simply won’t be any Christmas presents. For some, where parents are separated, there may be the difficult dilemma of where to spend Christmas.

them that they are feeling bad at such a supposedly happy time. But sharing your feelings with others and being listened to can help to make you feel better. Here at the Young Persons Counselling Service we provide free, confidential counselling to 11-16 year-olds across Peterborough. We’re here to help. Contact us on 0800 634 4395 949585.

The festive season can be a particularly difficult time for some young people, and it can be a real struggle to deal with the emotions that this time of year can bring. They may feel that they want to tell someone how they feel, but what reaction would they get? Who would understand? It might be difficult for a young person to tell those close to

Festive Fun at Ladysmith WI At the end of November, members gathered for a Christmas meal in Parcs Restaurant at Peterborough Regional College. Come along over the weekend to see all the beautiful trees. Our Christmas party meeting is Tuesday December 12th, at 7.30pm, in St. Andrew's Hall. table. Teams ‘A’ (in division three) and ‘B’ (in division four) play at either of our two locations, ensuring good, enjoyable local matches most weekends throughout the season at one or both fields. The quality of football played by each team continues to develop, with aspirations to play for the First team in the premier division. A welcome awaits spectators at either location, with clubhouse facilities including refreshments. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended and supported our club night at Childers on November 11th, and we hope to see you again at our future events. We’ll be advertising details of our future fundraising efforts early next year. Finally – to all our players and committee members, their families, friends and all our supporters – Season’s Greetings, and best wishes for the New Year!

WI Looks to the Year Ahead The Whittlesey Women’s Institute held their Annual General Meeting in November. ack in 2010, a local boxer set out to keep the youth of Whittlesey off the streets. Whittlesey Amateur Boxing Club was born – and despite a few setbacks along the way, the club is fighting fit seven years on.

First established in the small local youth club, the boxing gym soon increased in popularity and members benefitted from classes for all ages. It quickly became a way to keep local youngsters out of trouble, offering them a sport to which they could dedicate their time, and in which they could strive to achieve. Despite having a large number of regular members throughout the years, the club failed to meet its rent and in early 2017 was forced to move premises. Training currently takes place inside a disused barn in Eastrea, but despite the less than ideal location, the club continues to run regular boxing and fitness classes.

knowledge of boxing, he helped to inspire and motivate the future amateur boxers of Whittlesey.

Classes range from adult circuits to junior boxing sessions and are great for building not only fitness, but also confidence. As a non-profit organisation, each of the club’s five coaches are voluntary and all membership subs are paid back into the club.

BoxingFuturesUK is a leading charity that helps disadvantaged young people, and in partnership with the Movember Foundation, they’ve recently introduced their ‘Brothers Through Boxing’ programme. Aimed at 16-25 year olds, this programme is designed to help males live longer and happier lives through non-contact and general fitness boxing.

With the help of sponsorship and council approved funding, the club hopes to secure more permanent premises. Support for the club continues to grow, and last month it even received a visit from champion boxer Marcello Renda, head coach of BoxingFuturesUK. Giving his time to pass on his vast

The Effect of Interest Rate Rises by Eamonn Dorling

By the time you read this the Bank of England may have increased interest rates – but why, and what might the impact be? Interest rates are usually increased when inflation increases. The Office for National Statistics* said the annual rate of Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation was 3% in September (up from 2.6% in July); the last time it was higher was in March 2012. Putting up interest rates: a) Makes borrowing more expensive, thus reducing investment. b) Results in higher mortgage repayments, leading to reduced borrowing. (Both of these lower economic growth) c) Leads to an increased return to saving, and a fall in property prices. d) Results in a reduced money supply, so the exchange rate increases. (These help lower Inflation) If a typical mortgage of £150,000 increases by 2.5%, from 0.25% to 2.75%, the monthly increase is about £19. In isolation as a single event this is probably affordable by most, but if the rate increases again and again then the cumulative effect can be very uncomfortable. A generally held view is that bond prices fall when interest rates rise. Many pension funds have large holdings of investments termed bonds. Some fixed interest products may provide higher returns, and some stocks

struggle against rising interest rates, while others do better in inflationary periods. There are more things going on such as currency exchange rates, political unrest, complex European negotiations and so on. Anyone that says that they know what will happen in the future should be carefully avoided in my opinion – the landscape is a complicated one! What should you do? Consider your personal circumstances and do some serious cash flow studies based on your household budget. Diversify your assets so that if something bad happens you have limited your exposure to it. Remember that a fall in value of 20% requires a 25% increase to get back to where you were, so protection from a fall is less effort than putting it right again. Do you need a hand? For an independent look at investing, consult a specialist Independent Financial Adviser. *www.ons.gov.uk/economy/inflationandpriceindices/ timeseries/d7g7/mm23 There are several measures of inflation; CPI is just one of them. ■ Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The Local Music Scene

“I Got the Power!” - by Dave Bailey

This month, we look at venues and volume. On many occasions as an audience member, I have ventured into a pub or club only to find the ability to even think is pounded into submission by a wall of sound from some poor overdriven speakers at the threshold of disintegration. The art of matching the sound level to the venue, and specifically the audience, is often replaced by a “how loud can I go?” philosophy. For this reason, many venues have installed power meters with a mains trip based on a traffic light system – stay too long in the red, and the power to the stage is cut (often causing mayhem to any computer based instruments, keyboards and app controlled PA mixers!). From folk clubs to stadium venues, the key is a sound system that can reproduce the instrumentation and vocals clearly. A backroom acoustic session can be just as entertaining as the world’s loudest rock band in an arena gig, as long as the sound remains accurate to the performance. Of course, there are songs in a band’s repertoire where an element of instrument distortion and vocal effects are key to the overall feel and genre of the track, but added distortion or room colouring can spoil the original intention of the performance. There are a number of local venues where bare walls, vaulted ceilings and hollow floors cause uncontrollable reverberation, and too much volume only accentuates the problem. In these venues, you should keep it simple by starting off with a flat mix, and sometimes the venue’s own acoustic characteristics can be used to good effect. d e c em b er 2017

Many years ago I watched The Who at Shed 7, Birmingham, at what was their seventh or eighth farewell gig (which seemed to be an annual event!). They went for the kilowatt sound record, and the apparent distortion was actually a product of eardrum overload as the rig used, according to the sound crew, was only being driven at 70%. This, as any medical buffs will tell you, can cause irreparable damage and continued exposure leads to eventual hearing loss. In the same way, overdriving the PA or any of the backline amps will invariably produce distortion and, in the long-term, fatigue of the speaker cones. Exceeding the speaker rating for long periods can also cause the coil windings to overheat, and in the worst case either burn out or melt and deform. This usually causes the coil former to grate on the side of the pole. The key is to use any system within its optimal operating range, and seasoned performers will sound check each instrument’s backline amp before a full mix through the PA. Often in small venues, the backline can be raw from the cabs and not included in the PA mix, with only the vocals and kick drum being miked to obtain the rhythmic drive. A good sound check is the key to a great performance: well-balanced across the instruments, at a level where feedback is controlled and the battle of the musicians to be loudest is unnecessary. A Word from the Royal british legion Once again our Poppy Appeal launch took place at our annual Band Concert evening, held at the Ivy Leaf Club on Friday, October 27th. We are extremely grateful to the City of Peterborough Concert Band, with Henry Clydesdale, who provided the evening’s entertainment; this is the nineteenth year that they have come totally free of charge. We managed to raise a total of £712, a fantastic start for our fundraising.

Young Sisters’ Second Chop for Charity Two Whittlesey girls recently took the brave decision to have their cut off in aid of the Little Princess Trust – for the second time. Sisters Sydney (10) and Miley Gleeson (8) both donated their hair to the charity back in January, but decided to do the same again while this time raising money too. Mum Holly explains: “The girls asked me what happens when not enough hair is sent in to make wigs, and I explained that the wigs have to be bought. With this in mind, the girls set themselves the extra target of raising as much money as possible, so their hair could be used towards one wig and their money towards another.” The girls fundraised in a variety of ways: through sponsorship, raffles (with thanks to some lovely local shop owners who donated prizes) and a bake sale. Their total at the time of writing, with some sponsorship money yet to come in, is £378.

As I write this article we are in the middle of the Remembrancetide fortnight. Our thanks go to all who have donated and helped our Poppy Appeal in any way, especially those who braved the elements and collected on the streets in all weathers. We are hopeful of exceeding last year's total of £6,800, which was a record for two hectic weeks of fundraising! Our next social event is our Christmas Dance at the Ivy Leaf Club on Friday, December 8th. Tickets are £12 each and include a hot carvery meal, so come and join us for an enjoyable festive evening. Non-members are most welcome. Finally, may we take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy New Year. National Helpline: 0808 802 8020 Branch Secretary: Ray Thrower 0785 068 0785 Chairman: Ken Mayor 01733 204944 Poppy Appeal: Judy Darby 0772 408 1024

Thanks from NGNPUK!

Sydney and Miley’s teachers at Alderman Jacobs School were happy to donate and are immensely proud of their achievements, as is their mum.

NGNPUK would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came along to the Early Bird Christmas Shopping Event at the Eastrea Centre on November 5th. We raised a whopping £577.62 for the charity.

“As you can imagine, I am immensely proud of the girls. Both decided to do this off their own backs after watching a TV programme in which a young girl had cancer and wore wigs. They’ve donated nine inches of hair each time and even though they prefer their long hair, they say they would rather a poorly child have hair. After all, theirs will soon grow back.”

Particular thanks go to: Lisa Hedges and Nicky Bedford for all their hard work organising the event, and to all the stallholders; Ray and Nelda Thrower for manning the raffle, which was really busy; the fantastic Kim Fountain, who was our very own Santa's Elf for the day; and Shelly Anderson for baking some lovely cakes for us to sell.
