Interesting articles to help you understand your body better
Understanding coughs and colds Have you ever wondered why when people are exposed to an illness, some people succumb and others do not?
“These small organisms, too small to see without magnification, invade humans, animals, and other living hosts. Their growth and reproduction within their hosts can cause a disease.”
For decades our focus has been on eradicating the germ, or micro-organism. The term micro-organism defines organisms that are too small to see with the naked eye, such as bacteria, fungus, viruses and so on. When we take antibiotics we are looking to kill the micro-organism to rid ourselves of the disease.
We have highlighted the key phrase in the definition here: growth and reproduction. The micro-organisms have to not only invade, but reach a critical mass before they can cause disease. Until then we are immune.
If it is all about the micro-organism, surely everybody who is exposed should suffer? Why, then, do some people remain unaffected? One valid argument is that non-sufferers are already immune to the illness because they have been exposed to the micro-organism before, and have therefore developed a resistance to it. This is true, but does not hold true when we consider new micro-organisms. Recent examples would be the bird flu or Ebola. Here, nobody has learned immunity as nobody has been exposed to the germ before. In theory these outbreaks should be catastrophic, affecting hundreds of millions of people, and yet they are not. Why? Let’s go back to basics and look closely at the definition of a disease-causing micro-organism. The following definition is from Wikipedia:
Recent studies have shown that many healthy non-symptomatic people carry the harmful E-coli strain within their gut flora, yet remain symptom-free. So what dictates micro-organism growth and reproduction? The answer is favourable conditions. Each micro-organism will need a certain set of conditions to flourish. Our internal environment is composed of sugars, salts, fatty acids, amino acids, coenzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, white blood cells, waste products and toxins, and altering this environment can turn the balance of power to another microorganism. Our internal environment is affected by factors such as diet, lifestyle, exercise, water intake, stress, emotional balance and sleep, and thus it is these things which determine a micro-organism’s ability to flourish.

New Year, New Healthy Habits The New Year is a time for reflection, and a chance to make positive changes to your life that will make a real improvement to your health and happiness. Creating a New Year’s resolution or pledge to make better choices, can be a great idea, especially if you are resolving to get healthier and happier. People who explicitly make resolutions are ten times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t explicitly make resolutions. So, if you want to lose weight, get more fit, take up a new hobby, or return to an old one this year, then resolving to do so may be beneficial to you. Just make sure you have an action plan that helps ensure your success. It is essential to find some positive support to help to keep you motivated and on track. For some, family or friends may be just what they need. But, if they are also struggling with the same issues as you, and aren’t ready to commit themselves to change, then, you might need to look elsewhere for help to keep you going when things get tough. Often, trying to find a local group of like-minded people, can be your best
bet, or even try to go online for a virtual support group, or seek out the help of a professional personal trainer, dietician, or life coach. Our team of practitioners can offer a wealth of knowledge and experience, support and encouragement to you. We can help you to learn how to relax and switch off more, with meditation classes, or help you to manage stress levels and to sleep better, with relaxing reflexology or aromatherapy massage treatments. We can help to support you with your new exercise regime, by providing sports massage, to help your body adapt to the new stresses and strains, and to help to reduce your risk of injury. Our podiatrists can help to keep you, or loved ones, on your feet and traditional Chinese acupuncture can help with anything else! So, if you are ready to make positive changes in your life this year, contact us, to see how we can help to support you on your journey.

systems, will improve service reliability for users who may also notice the addition of solar panels on the roofs of the buildings, and new LED lighting within the centres. The works have taken place over the last nine months and were completed on time and in budget.
Energy Saving Improvements Make a Splash at Fenland Leisure Centres Fenland’s leisure centres have been given an energy efficiency makeover as part of Fenland District Council’s work to cut energy use, reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change. New energy systems and energy saving measures have been rolled out across the district’s four New Vision Fitness leisure centres, with the aim of saving energy in order to reduce the both the Council’s costs and its carbon footprint. The £800,000 upgrade will reduce the leisure centres’ carbon emissions by 281 tonnes a year – a reduction of 21% across the four sites – and cut their annual leisure energy costs by a third (around £100,000 a year). With popular facilities including three large swimming pools and early-to-late opening seven days a week, the leisure centres represent the Council’s largest energy consumer by some margin. With some plant equipment reaching the end of its life, a different approach to managing maintenance costs was needed. Research identified the RE:FIT framework, an award-winning initiative championed by Cambridgeshire County Council and other partners, which supports public sector organisations with energy conservation. Working closely with appointed delivery partner Bouygues Energies & Services, a retrofit scheme was developed to reduce carbon emissions, cut energy costs and upgrade the leisure centres’ facilities through a combination of low-cost energy saving measures, renewable energy measures and new energy efficient systems. The new systems, including combined heat and power, plant equipment and energy management 10

Councillor Michelle Tanfield, Fenland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: “The RE:FIT programme is the largest energy conservation scheme ever to be undertaken by the Council. The project is a great example of what is possible when several bodies from the public sector work together with a key supplier from the private sector.” Miles Messenger, Energy Engineering Manager at Bouygues Energies & Services, said: “We are really pleased to work with Fenland District Council in delivering their strategic goals to reduce carbon, save money and improve their leisure centre assets. This ambitious project combined low-carbon and renewable energy generation with energy efficiency technology to deliver a significant improvement in energy performance.”
SHSCC Year 11s Put the ‘Fun’ in Fundraising On November 17th, students and staff at Sir Harry Smith Community College took part in a range of fundraising activities in aid of two good causes. Organised by the Year 11s, the day raised a magnificent £1663.92 for Children in Need and local charity YPCS. Fundraising activities included attending in non-uniform (with the Year 11s in fancy dress), selling candy floss and other snacks at break and lunchtime, and – a particular favourite with the students – the chance to drench their teachers in the stocks! Mrs Curtis, Pastoral Manager for Key Stage 4, commented: “The day was a huge success, and I’d like to thank the dedicated Year 11s who did a fantastic job of organising the day and making sure everything went smoothly.” JANUARY 2018

Learn to Sing for Free with Hereward Harmony There are many men who would love to sing, but most never get around to it or are too self-conscious to give it a go. The simple fact is that just about everyone can sing, so what could be better than a free course to help you discover your voice? Hereward Harmony is a well-established barbershop close harmony chorus. To celebrate our thirtieth anniversary we are running a ‘Learn to Sing’ course at the Orton Wistow Community Centre, PE2 6XN. We are a male chorus who sing in traditional four part close harmony consisting of bass, baritone, lead and tenor, meaning anyone can find a part to suit their voice. We normally sing a wide range of numbers, but during the course we will concentrate on a few songs to achieve good progress. The course will take place each Thursday from 7.30pm to 10pm, beginning on February 8th and ending on March 15th 2018. You do not have to read music and will sing a part alongside at least one of our experienced singers, who will help and encourage you. Our talented young musical director will also help with each individual part, in addition to ensuring that the overall timing, pitch and musicality reach a high standard. The first part of the evening will concentrate on developing the new singers and songs. There will then be a break for free refreshments, after which our chorus will sing some of our repertoire as a further guide to what we do. You will also receive sheet music and teach tracks that will allow you to practise during the week. We are a friendly and sociable chorus and can promise that you will enjoy the experience. Regardless of your singing experience, progress will be rapid and you may be surprised at how sweet the sound of a four-part harmony is. Reserve your place now by ringing Alan Lund on 07850 007057. Visit www.herewardharmony. com for more information.

How to Make a Successful New Year’s Resolution - By Lauren Bremner, Active Fenland Co-ordinator
‘New Year New You’; ‘Time For A Resolution’; ‘Make This Year Your Year’; ‘Fresh Start’, whatever you have read, or wherever you read it, there is no escaping the fact that it is January. You have been putting off starting anything new and you have January 1st circled on your calendar as ‘START’, whether that’s to get fitter, or lose weight, work out, or diet; we are all guilty and there’s no getting away from it. New Year’s resolutions to get fitter and healthier do not need to cost the earth. There are plenty of really affordable options and remember, you are never too busy for YOU. There are lots of great sessions pre-existing and new in March and surrounding areas so, if you’re inactive, they can be a really great place to start. But if they don’t fit with you, then there are also some at-home workouts to help you out – you can find all this and more, online at www.activefenland.gov.uk. My top tips for sticking to your New Year’s resolution, whatever that may be: 1) Don’t just set a goal... make a plan – Think about the “what ifs”, the temptations, and any reason you may give up or fall off the wagon, and plan in ways to actively combat these. 2) Don’t go cold turkey – The biggest mistake made is cutting everything pretending you’re the saladeating, gym-going, chocolate-resisting king or queen of the world, and it does you no favours. 3) Build up – So you’re now going to work out every day of the week because you’re a gymgoing machine… wrong! You’re going to build up at an achievable pace, and you’re not going to get swept up in the January frenzy. 4) Set short-term goals and be realistic - Overhauling your current lifestyle overnight is hard; think carefully and include them in your plan, add it to your roadmap to success, the more specific the better.
5) Make it personal – We all want to look and feel our best, but what is your resolution really going to mean for you; how is it going to make you happier? Is it going to make you more active with your kids or grandkids, mean you’re going to look great on your wedding day, or on that holiday you saved hard for; is it going to give you a new social aspect to your life or help improve a condition? If it has more meaning than to just lose weight or get fitter, then you’re far more likely to push to achieve, and you guessed it, put it in your plan. 6) Invest – In order to achieve your goals, you will need to allocate time. Where will it fit? Will you need to do this in the morning, evening, middle of the day; will it be different on different days? Figure it out against your diary and plan it in. Investing in new items, do you need it or do you just want it; can you start your resolution without it? If you don’t need it, then it’s a treat. Reach a short-term goal in your plan before you allow yourself a treat; rewarding the little victories will keep you motivated and on the track to success. Remember, you are doing this for you, and if your New Year’s Resolution is a lifestyle change or improvement, make it for life not just for January. Good luck! Happy New Year from Active Fenland.

Good News for Local Teachers - By Steve Barclay MP
I
would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone in Whittlesey and surrounding areas a Happy New Year.
I recently updated constituents that the DfE’s Opportunity Area Programme offered all qualified teachers working in schools within Fenland and East Cambridgeshire free training for National Professional Qualifications, which usually costs between £450 and £7,000. As a result of Fenland and East Cambs being in the Opportunity Area Programme, teachers are now eligible to access professional development programmes free of charge via the Teaching and Leadership Innovation Fund. Teachers will have the opportunity to increase their skills, confidence and knowledge in a range of areas including leadership, STEM subjects, phonics and managing challenging pupil behaviour. Alongside this, teachers who have qualified between 2013 and 2019 and are currently teaching Languages, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Computer Science will be eligible to claim their student loan back via a reimbursement scheme.
teachers. This is one of a number of wider DfE funding schemes, additional to the £6m already committed to the area.
This scheme will be a powerful incentive to young teachers to come and work here and help our area recruit the very best of
I look forward to updating constituents of the further benefits of Government awarding our area Opportunity Area status in the future.
Any teachers who wish to take advantage of this scheme or the free training opportunities should e-mail OpportunityAreas.EAST@education.gov.uk.

Local History
From a newspaper report in the Lincolnshire Chronicles:
1858 FIRE IN WHITTLESEY On a Thursday afternoon in May 1858, part of Whittlesey’s town centre was ravaged by a devastating fire. Here, the story of this terrible event
“
is told through the eyes of a contemporary newspaper report...
About three o’clock Thursday afternoon, a number of men were playing at bowls in the alley at the back of the Old Crown Inn, it being the town feast and a holiday. Adjoining the alley there stood a barn, thatched of course. Suddenly the men became aware that a live flame, a mere dot, was playing in the roof. They had scarcely perceived it before it had darted into the thatch and was making rapid way.” What had begun as a mere flicker quickly grew, and the newspaper report, from the Lincolnshire Chronicles, goes on to explain how efforts to contain the fire were beset by problems from the start. Although water was quickly obtained, the first ladder taken to the fire was too short to reach the roof, and before anyone could stop it the fire had already spread to a neighbouring thatched house. Further difficulties still awaited the fire-fighters:

“By this time one of the four town fire engines was brought to the spot, but either by accident or by age (it is said to have been new in 1700), the nozzle of the hose was found to be unfit for use, so that for some time absolutely nothing effectual could be done to arrest the progress of the fire.”
Although water was quickly obtained, the first ladder taken to the fire was too short to reach the roof, and before anyone could stop it the fire had already spread to a neighbouring thatched house. “Mr Vines, the landlord of the Crown, with his family, servants and neighbours was in the meantime engaged in removing his furniture and goods. Your Garden
January Gardening Tips Although there are one or two jobs that you can do, January is a good time to sit by the fire with a nice cup of tea and organise a planting plan for what you would like to grow, and where you would like to grow it. Take stock of what grew well last year, or if you have an allotment, what successes other growers had that you might like to try your hand at. How about trying to grow something a little unusual for a change - away from your standard fruit and veg - and order seeds now? You can work on a three year crop rotation. Crop rotation prevents the soil from becoming exhausted from growing the same crop continually, which takes the same nutrients out of the soil. It also reduces the risk of pests and diseases establishing and then becoming very difficult to eradicate. The three year crop rotation involves the following: Year 1: Peas, beans and fruiting vegetables: Peas and beans absorb nitrogen from the air and store it in the roots. Leaving the roots in after harvesting benefits next year’s crop. Year 2: Brassicas are nitrogen-hungry; grow them where last year’s peas and beans grew. They are also susceptible to club root (a soil-borne fungus) so moving them around helps keep this at bay. Year 3: Roots, tubers, onions and leaves: These crops do not have a particular “thirst” for nitrogen so it is good to grow them after brassicas, where the nitrogen content has been depleted. 20

Towards the end of the month seed potatoes should be available, and you can start chitting them in seed trays ready for planting. Other jobs that can be carried out are as follows: • Prune apple and pear trees, but not stone fruits such as cherry and damson (they should be summer pruned). • Plant bare rooted trees and bushes. • At this time of year rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. What could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb harvested in late February? • Rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. What could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb harvested in late February? • Support Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli. • Protect plants from cold and check stakes and ties. • Start a bean trench by digging down about 60cm and then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste, cover with a layer of soil. Continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down. • It’s a good time of year for a spot of cleaning. Seed trays and plant pots can be cleaned with a mild bleach solution to kill diseases that may have carried over to the new seedlings. Happy gardening for 2018!

Home Interiors
Muted Tones for 2018 - by Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin
Decorating fashions come and go, some circle around, but I've not yet seen a resurgence of the garish pre-flower power oranges and purples of my childhood. Earth colours have been popular for at least a decade, and the muted tones of greenblue and rose blend easily with beige and grey. Here is a look back at the most popular colours that my clients picked for their homes in 2017. Despite the idolisation of grey, with many new builds coated from top to toe in pale stone, most people find it too cold to live with, and just plain boring. It needs a counterpoint. Warming, deep tones of brown and blue, coupled with highlights of pink and green-blue combine to make a colour palette that is easy on the eye, modern and suitable for all ages. Dulux have chosen a muddy pink for their colour of 2018: their European-based experts undertake a lot of research before arriving at a decision and it’s spot on in relation to my own experience.
Alone, it may not excite you, but team it with other lights and darks and it can produce an interesting scheme. It's a colour that warms, an immense benefit in this climate! Do you struggle to find the right colours for your home? Perhaps you'd like to decorate one room, but want it to flow with what's already there, or maybe you fancy a complete refresh. My tool bag contains two hundred colours and together, we can develop a selection especially for you and your family, which you can use when you're ready. Start the New Year with a plan. No more arguments, no more indecision, and no more match pots! Top image: 2017 paint selection from the ranges offered by ColourandPaint.com and Dulux.co.uk

Legal
Should you Make a Letter of Wishes? – by Janet Lane
What is a letter of wishes? A letter of wishes is a confidential document that sets out your thought process either at the time of making your will or at a later date, and expresses your personal wishes about how you would like things to be done after your death. As such, it can provide important information that you may wish to be kept outside of your will, or can simply offer guidance to executors and trustees to provide general information about how you envisage any money being used, or information in relation to the family dynamics.
Should you make one? Whereas the contents of a will are legally binding, the contents of a letter of wishes are not. Nevertheless, they can be useful in certain circumstances. A letter of wishes can simply help executors make practical early decisions, such as making funeral arrangements. However, it can also provide reassurance to executors and trustees when making potentially difficult or unpopular decisions, and can help them manage family expectations. A letter of wishes can be particularly helpful if your family situation is one which includes, for example, being married more than once, having children from different relationships, or a family business where one child is involved in the day-to-day running of the business and another is not. Another use for a letter of wishes is to specify who should inherit certain items that are not of great monetary value, but where their sentimental value means that you want to make specific mention of
them. Detailing these items in your will could make it too lengthy or difficult for the executors to deal with and, if you have a change of heart about who should inherit a specific item, it can be done without having to alter your will.
What else do I need to know? Because a letter of wishes is not legally binding, the executors and trustees are under no legal obligation to distribute items in accordance with the letter. That said, without a letter of wishes there can be confusion as to why you have made certain decisions in your will, and family members can be left not knowing the reasons for receiving a smaller inheritance in comparison to their siblings, or even being left out altogether. In these circumstances, a letter of wishes can help to prevent disagreements between family members and can help to avoid a challenge to your will. A letter of wishes does not replace the need to make a will and cannot prevent a successful claim being brought against the estate by an excluded beneficiary, as the recent case of Nahajec v Fowle shows, (in that case, an adult child); however, it can be helpful when your will does not provide for family members as they might expect, and can provide you with the opportunity to specify who should inherit items of sentimental value to you, without having to make a long and complicated will. Consumer Advice
Tried-and-Tested Professional Services at the Touch of a Button FOR almost a decade, Safe Local Trades has been championing consumers through an online service providing thousands of customers with easy access to reliable and reputable tradesmen. With consumer confidence and working tirelessly to force out rogue and cowboy traders across the Peterborough area, Safe Local Trades and its director, Eileen Le Voi, have received a number of awards for this community-focussed service. And now Eileen has launched a sister company to the service which has seen over 11,000 local reviews being left for tried-and-tested traders. Safe Local Services will offer recommended and vetted services, from accountants to dog groomers and from hypnotherapists to tattooists. Despite being in the early stages, a number of services – which Eileen is currently limited to three per category for the first year of business – have already signed up. These include financial advisers, HR consultants, beauty therapists and many more. Eileen explained, “Since Safe Local Trades was established in 2008, we have been asked for recommendations on dozens of different services outside the remit of tradesmen – hence we are now delighted to be able to launch Safe Local Services. “The aim is again to provide consumers with professionals, by offering peace of mind when instructing a service. Each service will undergo a stringent vetting process, have its own profile, gallery of images and a chance for consumers to leave their own feedback and reviews. We have found, over the past nine years, that consumers trust our recommendations. However, the benefit is two-fold, as professions becoming a member of Safe Local Services will benefit from an already trusted and highly respected service - as well as a reputable brand name.

Pets’ Corner
The Veterinary Nurse – by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre
Question: What does a veterinary nurse do? Answer: They spend the day cleaning and cuddling puppies, don't they? The answer is no, they don't! (Well, not all of the day anyway!) Veterinary nurses need to be able to turn themselves to any task, from cuddling puppies and kittens to dealing with pet end of life situations; from clearing up after projectile diarrhoea to dealing with newborns during a caesarean, and everything in between. There are many procedures carried out by veterinary nurses, and programmes such as Supervet and The Yorkshire Vet have been useful in showing these to the public. Professor Noel Fitzpatrick wouldn't be the successful vet he is without a dedicated team of nurses to assist him. Although Noel is the figurehead of that practice, in the same way a head vet is in any first opinion practice, he requires nurses for a huge variety of tasks: to monitor the patients during and after surgery through to recovery, to help in theatre, take radiographs, do lab tests, take bloods, place catheters and sterilise equipment after an operation, as well as to just spend time with the pet during their stay. These are just a few of their jobs! Even though most people detest cleaning and often rush it to get it out of the way, it is one of a veterinary nurse’s most important jobs, and it must be done properly in order to keep the practice safe for your pets. Cleaning must be done well in order to prevent harmful bugs colonising and causing hospital-acquired infections that are very difficult to eliminate.

Nurses can train to become qualified in veterinary nursing and become registered by the governing body, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. To do this they need to work full time, study and go to college for two or three years. There are various pathways but they all involve very intensive courses. Despite this hard work, it is very satisfying when you get to the end and qualify. There is no upper age limit and it can be done by anyone. Being a veterinary nurse is a very rewarding profession, but also an extremely demanding job. As is often reported in the press, there are some people who neglect their pets to unbelievable degrees – cases of which are sometimes seen in practice – and it is often very difficult for veterinary staff to switch off from this when they are not at work. You therefore need to have both a thick skin and a heart of gold to do the job. One of the things that gets veterinary staff through the day (not just nurses) is the pleasure of meeting those owners who will do anything for their pets, and the delight on the owner's faces, along with the wagging tails of the dogs, when pets are picked up at the end of the day. Being a veterinary nurse is a very rewarding job and a good profession to enter for both males and females, with many different pathways to pursue according to your particular area of interest.

Church Matters
New Year, New Beginnings January is here again, another start to a New Year. It’s a time for new beginnings, often seen in our desire to make New Year’s resolutions. They are soon made, often with good intention, but maybe don’t last all that long! We are not limited as to how many new beginnings we can have. We have just celebrated Christmas, and in the birth of Jesus, God marks a new beginning with his people. He makes a promise that no matter how many times we fall short we can always start again, whether we fail in our duties to the God who created us or in our relationships with each other. Forgiveness and a new start lie at the heart of the Christian message. It is the Good News that Jesus brought in his birth, life, death and resurrection.
We can share this message and live better lives with God and each other. As the New Year comes around do take the opportunity to look honestly at your life, see where you need to start again, face the challenge of a new beginning and ask God to be with you. This year may see the start of a new life with the birth of a child, or a wedding celebrating a new relationship. The Church helps celebrate these events with baptism and marriage. Please feel free to explore with one or both of these celebrations. There is no obligation and it may open up other new pathways. Thank you for all your support in 2017 and we look forward to being with you in 2018. May God bless you all in this New Year. Reverend Nigel
Whittlesey Christian Church
Thank You for Unprecedented Generosity Our church family counts it a privilege to be heavily involved in the Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid, with all its challenges and blessings. Still, what happened prior to Christmas exceeded anything we could have hoped for, and made everything feel worthwhile. What started as Councillor David Mason, Sue Jennings and I considering the possibility of WEFA providing those on the current database a Christmas meal within its traditional hamper, very quickly snowballed! First, Deborah Slater of Defibrillators for All contacted us with the idea of trying to provide every child with an age and gender related present. Within days an amazing number of her supporters had made this a reality. Then others began offering help: the Whittlesey Lions gave a financial contribution; a packing company provided boxes; Morrison’s in Stanground kindly donated eight large tubs of sweets, along with
vouchers to help with purchasing the food required for the Christmas meal hamper; and Sandra and Martin Green provided a donation from their charity event, along with a cycle. Added to this is the amazing help received from the church congregations who support us with food, some on a weekly basis, along with individual members of our community who faithfully bring contributions direct to us, or place them in the WEFA trolley which the Co-op supermarket very kindly provides a permanent space for. David and his team have provided some amazing produce from the allotment this year, and furthermore, our schools kindly donated the produce from their harvest festivals. On behalf of those we have been able to stand alongside and help, I’d like to say a huge thank you. God bless you in 2018. Pay us a visit one Sunday.

School News Bear Grylls – Park Lane Style! During the Autumn Term, Year Six children at Park Lane Primary School have been studying ‘Frozen Kingdom’ – a topic covering the tragedy of the Titanic; animal adaptations in the Arctic and Antarctic; polar exploration and survival in extreme conditions. To launch their topic, children took part in a survival day where they could test their abilities in fire lighting, tent pitching, signalling and shelter building. On a brisk autumn day in November, this was no easy challenge! Mr Adam Pallister, class teacher, said "The whole day was a fantastic experience – the children were able to develop a wide range of skills, which they could explain confidently when they returned to the classroom the next day. The Year Six team is incredibly proud of all of the children for their perseverance and determination. It was a delight to see how the children were so engaged and inspired during this unique experience." One highlight of the day was fire-lighting using materials the children had gathered from the local area. Following a demonstration of how to work safely with fire and matches, children worked in small groups to create a well-organised stack of cotton wool, small twigs and kindling ready to light; the ultimate goal was to create a fire on which they could cook their food rations, so the (bacon) stakes were high! With the fires burning brightly, children quickly learned the importance of teamwork to ensure there was a constant supply of fuel, and careful planning so that the fire didn’t burn out. The pupils demonstrated an impeccable level of knowledge and understanding, working maturely and sensibly in a potentially dangerous environment, with great respect for the risks of working with fire.
Anti-Bullying Week at Coates School During the week of November 13th-17th, Coates Primary School celebrated Anti-Bullying Week by thinking of lots of fabulous ideas on how to keep each other safe and happy. To help raise awareness, each class released a balloon carrying their important anti-bullying message. We are very proud of our school and the children are all proud to be themselves: all different, and all special!
Minister of State Visits AJS Alderman Jacobs School was pleased to be asked to host a visit by Robert Goodwill MP, the Minister of State in the Department for Education this week. The school was chosen to showcase the wide range of sporting and healthy lifestyle activities they have provided for children since the introduction of the PE & Sports premium. After a healthy and nutritious lunch, and a bowl of our homemade natural yoghurt with fruit and seed toppings from the Yoghurt Station, the Minister met with children who were keen to share their learning. They spent time talking to him about their healthy lifestyle activities, including Zumba, badminton and skipping workshops. They were also eager to tell him about the range of clubs that happen every week, from the Early Bird fitness sessions in which children do indoor cycling, speed stacking and circuits, to their competitive tournaments in tag rugby, football and netball. Having seen sport, PE and active learning in action across the school, Mr Goodwill left with lots of ideas for sharing with other schools across the country.

Happy New Year from Whittlesey Wind Ensemble! We hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and start to the New Year. At Whittlesey Wind Ensemble we are getting ready to tune up for another exhilarating year of great music, fun rehearsals and exciting concert opportunities, all conducted by our experienced conductor Stefen Dicks. As ever, we would like to thank the community for its ongoing support and as we reflect on the success of the last few concerts, we would like to invite any budding musicians out there to join us.
An Exciting New Year for Ladysmith WI After the wonderful Christmas festivities we are all now looking forward to a packed programme for 2018, which includes some 'hands-on' activities, inspirational speakers and of course lunch outings and parties. In addition to the competition at each monthly meeting, there will also be a cookery and craft competition in spring, summer and at Christmas. We start off the New Year with our AGM on Tuesday January 9th. Following the official business we'll all enjoy homemade soup and test ourselves with a quiz. The competition this month is a Christmas photo.
Whether you haven’t played since university or school, or have recently started learning a new instrument and want a challenge yourself, our group is for you! Our relaxed yet productive rehearsals offer a space for anyone, ideally grade 4 or above, to meet like-minded people, enjoy playing as part of a friendly and enthusiastic ensemble and play a wide range of musical genres. Our musical library proudly boasts a repertoire of styles, varying from classical pieces through to marches, folk songs and popular film and pop music. Why not try something new and exciting for 2018? We meet every Thursday at the Methodist/United Reformed Church in Whittlesey, 7.45-9.15pm. Please get in touch and feel free to ask us any questions. Email whittleseywind@gmail.com or visit www.whittleseywindensemble.com. You can also check us out on Facebook for recent pictures and upcoming events!
As always new members and guests are very welcome to come along to our meetings, held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in St. Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane, Whittlesey. You can find out more from Sue (01733 205927), Liz (01733 689599) or find us on Facebook. Photo: Our members are pictured enjoying their Christmas lunch at Parcs Restaurant, Peterborough.

Spotlight On...
A Royal Welcome
T
he Peterborough Royals, the city’s first women’s American football team, extend a ‘Royal’ welcome to any ladies wanting to try something new on a Saturday morning!
The team first came together in the summer of 2016 and has since competed in their first flag (a non-contact form of American football) and kitted (full-contact) tournaments against other, more established women’s teams in the country. The ladies are now looking to the future, with an aim to develop their game from the current five-aside format to the seven-a-side, more commonly practised by women’s teams in the UK. That’s where you come in! Currently, the Peterborough Royals have a fantastic core of about fifteen dedicated players and three coaches, but there is always room for more! The team is comprised of members from a vast range of backgrounds: from former rugby players to ladies who have never played a team sport in their life; and from university freshers to ladies in their fifties. American football is so inclusive, with positions for all shapes, sizes and abilities. You don’t have to be an NFL fan to get involved, either – some of the ladies still haven’t even watched a game of American football (other than those they’ve been playing in!). The Royals’ experienced coaches will teach you everything you need to know.

The team is currently preparing to implement their new playbook and start practising for the next tournament in January 2018, meaning now is the perfect time to join. All kit is provided for players, so there’s no big expense - the only thing you need to bring is a positive attitude and suitable footwear! What are you waiting for? You can find the Royals on the field at Stanground Academy on Saturday mornings, from 10am until 1pm. How to Hold Ownership of Your Home by Eamonn Dorling
Among the ways that property can be held, probably the most common is joint ownership. For example: Mr and Mrs A bought their home together, possibly with the use of a mortgage which is paid up, so they own their home jointly. This is fine while they both enjoy living in the home, and in the event of one passing away (Mr A in this example), the survivor owns the entire home because jointly owned assets pass ownership in this way. Mr and Mrs B were encouraged to own their property as tenants in common, and a trust is created in their wills that works like this: when Mr B dies first, his share of the property transfers to a trust (the eventual beneficiaries of which will possibly be his children), while his wife Mrs B has the right to remain in the property for the rest of her days and retains ownership of her half. When Mrs B dies, her share goes in to the trust so that the trustees (whether their children or someone else) can pass on the benefits according to an expression of wishes (often this releases the property to be sold and the proceeds distributed). Why might the Bs’ arrangement be more secure than the As’? Well, as one example, after Mr A dies, Mrs A might require care. Depending on her circumstances, the local authority might rack up high care costs against the property that she owns and recover the charges when the house is eventually sold. Alternatively, if the property passes to their children there is nothing to stop a divorce or bankruptcy seeking to use those assets to settle a dispute. On the other hand, Mr & Mrs B pass their assets to trustees, so sequestrations cannot be applied.
There are other inheritance tax (IHT) and estate preservation issues that may be peculiar to individual cases, and therefore this article should not be viewed as advice or taken in isolation. A qualified independent financial adviser will look at all aspects and advise you on possible actions that really work. The point is that assets held in trust belong to the trustees and therefore are excluded from various financial assessments. The benefits of a trust may be determined by the trustees in line with the wishes of the donor. Assets can be put in to trust before death and therefore are not subject to probate. This may be safer than gifting assets to an individual who might wish to realise their wealth while the donor lives (e.g. sell the house of the parents that gave it to them!) or might be subject to a court order, divorce settlement or bankruptcy proceedings. This is a potentially complex area, requiring a combination of financial and legal planning. An experienced independent financial adviser will work closely with other professional specialists to help retain the value of an estate. The Local Music Scene
Snow Business like Show Business! - by Dave Bailey
This month we look at a topic I like to call ‘Winter Wonder-why?’ In the period between Firework Night and summer festivals, there are many events which take place on outside stages (sometimes just a pile of pallets) on wet, snowy and windy days. It’s during these colder months that performers often receive the call that sends a shiver down their spine: “are you available to play for a parade/festival?”. Hopefully it’s in a warm, dry hall or pub, but the reality is that most performers - whether as part of a band, solo or even when busking - have had the joy of performing in sideways rain and flapping gazebos, whilst sub-zero arctic winds freeze the fingers into submission. Christmas lights, craft fairs and markets are a great source of fundraising during November and December, and they’re followed by the New Year celebrations and crop fertility rituals of January. However, there are many pitfalls to playing in wintry conditions. Aside from the need for mains RCD on the supply to any powered appliance, the fear of water damage to instruments and amps and the difficulty of maintaining tuning of any stringed instrument, you must also consider the physical issues of numb fingers and extreme cold whilst performing! Too often organisers fail to take into account the performance area locations, forgetting about prevailing wind issues, security of the canopy (if provided) or even how to get power to the stage. The weather has its own notion of what’s required on the day, and usually throws the lot at you! The key things to remember for these events include layers, acclimatisation, protection and J ANUA RY 2018
contingency plans. Unless your performance includes any form of aerobic workout (which is unlikely on a keyboard), keeping warm is down to layering of clothing, of course while maintaining the band image. A cheap thermal base layer t-shirt under stage clothing works well, but make sure it is of the breathable type so as to remove any moisture if you’re lucky enough to have warm lighting or a drop in wind. Instruments and strings will respond dramatically to large changes in temperature. Even the transition from warm car to cold stage will result in tuning issues, so bring the instrument out for a good fifteen minutes before retuning. Take some thin plastic sheeting to keep keyboards and amps dry if wet weather if forecast, and if possible keep it over the gear until the last minute. There are clear, water-resistant acoustic covers available for some PA speakers, but these may not be available for all combo models. If space allows in the transport, and if the organisers have not confirmed cover or indicated what to do if the weather turns nasty, take a gazebo big enough to cover your equipment. Give guitars a good polish with instrument wax before setting out, and always dry off any moisture before putting them back in transport cases or bags. Keep warm out there…! IN THE HOT SEAT I work for Fenland District Council and have for the past nine years. Since June 2015, I have worked in the Sports Development Department, where I coordinate the Active Fenland Project, which is a ‘Sport Englandʼ funded project, to get the people of Fenland more active. I am extremely passionate about what I do. I love working within the community, and feeling like I can provide sport and physical activity in such a way that it can help make a difference in people’s lives. Where were you born, and what is your earliest memory of your childhood? I was born in Enfield, North London, before moving to Cambridgeshire at the age of ten. Most of my early memories revolve around animals. I had two dogs whilst growing up and I spent a lot of time at my grandparents, who have also had a whole host of pets; I have also ridden since the age of three; the country life definitely suits me, and so far, I have never desired to move back to a city.
Lauren Bremner
Who was the greatest influence in your life and why? I would have to say my family is my greatest influence. My mum and dad are two extremely hard-working people who gave me everything I could ever want as a child, as well as a strong work ethic. I’m an only child and very close to my mum, although we are quite different; she’s a lot softer and gentler than me. I hope that, when I have children, I can also parent in such a loving way, like her. Which two characters (alive or not), would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why? This is a tough one, I would have to say Walt Disney; I’m a huge fan of everything Disney and it would be great to meet the man behind the magic. My other one would be David Attenborough because I love

animals, and the documentaries he has worked on have been fascinating; who doesn’t love his voice? How would you describe yourself in five words? Passionate, opinionated, confident, loyal and creative. If there was one thing which you could change about March and the surrounding area what would it be and why?
I don’t actually live in March, but I do work here, I find it a pleasant town but I think it could do with some more facilities. With that said, I think we will see improvements to these over time, I know that there are improvements to sports facilities happening in the near future; which can really benefit some of the great clubs that March has to offer. What advice would you give to a 16-year-old you? At sixteen I found it really hard to know what to do. I think it’s a really difficult age to be making such big decisions about your life. You’re in limbo, where you’re practically still a child, but in your mind, you're so grown up. I think if I went back I would advise myself to soak up as much knowledge and experience as possible, and probably be a bit more outgoing and try new things.

It’s Another Poppy Record!
MEN UNITED IN SONG 2018: SUPPORTING PROSTATE CANCER UK New Year, new you? Looking for a fresh challenge, new skills and a great social scene to boot? Then look no further… Following its phenomenal success over the last couple of years, Men United in Song is back for 2018, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in February, the project will sign up a minimum of forty local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none), to rehearse over ten weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset Theatre on Saturday April 14th. To date, the project has engaged hundreds of local men, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity. Men United in Song is not all about the singing, or even about the fundraising; there’s a fantastic social scene, too! William Prideaux, Director of Men United in Song, says, “It’s a real privilege to work with such a cracking bunch of blokes. They take their music making as seriously as their socialising. There’s a real camaraderie among them and a tight-knit aspect to the group makes them a force to be reckoned with”. Men United in Song kicks off with introduction sessions at the Key Theatre at the beginning of February. Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just a willingness to get stuck in and give it a go. For further information contact Jo on 01733 425194 or e-mail info@peterboroughmvchoir.org.uk Introduction sessions will be at the Key Theatre, Peterborough on Thursday February 1st, (6.30pm9pm), Friday February 2nd, (6.30pm-9pm) and Saturday February 3rd, (10.30am-12.30pm). Please call/e-mail to register.
Last year we broke the record collecting for the Poppy Appeal in the Whittlesey area, with the massive total of £6,874.60, which was collected during the Remembrance fortnight. This year, for the same two-week period, we have collected a staggering total of £7,163.58! Well done to everyone who donated their money and time to help us reach this fantastic amount. Special thanks go to The Nag's Head at Eastrea and S. B. Refrigeration for putting on a race night and other fundraising events to raise a total of £1,060. The Ivy Leaf Club very kindly allowed us to run a poppy bingo on Monday November 13th, which raised a further £298, so huge thanks to them and all those who attended. We held a small, well-attended remembrance service at the Whittlesey memorial at 11am on Saturday November 11th, and on Sunday 12th parades and services were held at the memorials in the area. Once again it was a fine but cold day, and the parades and services were very popular. This was particularly so at the Whittlesey memorial, where over forty wreaths and crosses were laid, and it was very encouraging to see so many of the younger generation watching or taking part. We would like to thank all those who helped with the organisation of the parade, and especially those who took part, and those who braved the cold to pay their respects by coming to watch. I believe that the people of Whittlesey can feel proud that events such as this can be arranged, and are so well attended and supported. NGNPUK’s Big Handover On November 17th 2017, No Gain No Pain handed over twenty one brand new syringe drivers, thirty one lock boxes, fifty toolboxes and over 230 handmade bags to the Cambridge and Peterborough Foundation Trust. This brings the total amount of new machines donated so far to thirty nine, costing over £45,000! We’d like to say a massive thank you to all the pubs, clubs, companies, individuals and families who have helped with financial donations or raffle prizes, or just with ferrying stuff from A to B! Thank you to all of you who have given up your time to help us with events and all who have helped spread the word about us. We receive many letters and messages from families who are so grateful that their loved ones had one of the machines we provide. We would also like to say a massive thank you to all our wonderful district nurses out there doing the job on a daily basis. These extra machines are making a big difference to them as well. You may have noticed that we have spread our wings to help the whole of the Greater Peterborough area, which was sharing just nineteen machines between thirty three surgeries.
We are still contacted by families in other nearby areas – particularly towns and villages in Fenland and Lincolnshire - who are struggling to get access to a syringe driver, and so it is our future aim to help these areas too. Finally, we’d just like to clarify exactly what a syringe driver is. It is not a man in a van delivering syringes (which the name may suggest!), but a small machine that delivers pain relief and other drugs in palliative care. It can help patients remain at home with their families instead of going into hospital or a hospice. Just one last time – thank you!
Young People Grieve Too…
Anger may also make up a large part of a young person’s grief, sometimes without them even knowing why they feel angry – they just do. They may feel powerless to control this anger, which can often come out as challenging behaviour.
For many young people the death of someone close is an experience they are faced with early in life, with one in twenty nine school-age children in the UK having been bereaved of a parent or sibling. The death of a family member, friend, or even someone they barely knew can have a huge impact on a young person and disrupt their life in a major way.
Bereavement, combined with the upheaval and challenges of growing up, can feel very daunting for both the young person experiencing it and the adults who are trying to help. But remember, grief is not an illness or a condition – it is normal. Young people need to be given the same opportunity to grieve as adults, and should be encouraged to talk about how they are feeling and be given support to help them understand their emotions.
Even if there is no outward sign of inner turmoil, it’s important to understand that there can be intense emotions raging within. The sense that their world has just fallen apart may cause them to feel that life no longer has purpose or meaning. They may become apathetic, depressed, withdrawn and develop a “what’s the point?” attitude to school or activities they may have previously enjoyed doing. J ANUA RY 2018
Sometimes it can be difficult to speak to those closest to you, especially if they are grieving too. Here at the Young Persons Counselling Service, we provide a free, confidential counselling service for 11-16 year olds across the Peterborough area. We’re here to help. Contact us on 0800 634 4395.

Solitary Bees – by Jen Barback, Curator of Whittlesey Museum bees moving from flower to flower to drink nectar and collect pollen to feed their young. Different species come out in different months, to avoid competing with each other. The time of year when they are seen is the most reliable way for a non-expert to tell the species apart.
W
hittlesey is fortunate to retain many traditional mud walls, and the efforts to preserve and appreciate these unique pieces of our heritage are well documented. But what you may not realise is that these structures often serve another purpose – not for humans, but for bees. When people think of bees they usually imagine a colony in a hive ruled by a Queen, producing honey in wax cells. In fact, there are around 20,000 species of bee worldwide and of these, only 1% are the sociable honeybees or large furry bumblebees. In Britain there are more than 250 species of bees and more than 90% of them are solitary, living alone and not producing honey. Some species dig burrows in the ground and others nest in cavities such as the hollow bamboo tubes used in bee houses. You may see many solitary bee tunnels together in a good habitat, but each hole will have been a nest for a different bee. When they are ready to lay their eggs the female leaves one egg in the back of a tunnel on a ball of pollen and nectar food, seals it off, then lays another egg in front. This process is repeated until the tube is full up. Because the young males emerge a couple of weeks before the females do, the mother bee lays her female eggs first, in the back of the tube, and the male eggs at the front. Solitary bees are safe around humans and pets – they are not aggressive and do not swarm. Each bee lives for four seasons but they are usually only seen during their active adult stage over a few weeks in the spring or summer. They are small furry

Bees are the main pollinators of flowering plants and underpin human food production: approximately one in three mouthfuls of food and drink require pollination. Without bees, there would eventually be no people. Solitary bees carry the pollen on hairs (called scopa) on their legs or underneath their body rather than having pollen baskets, meaning that each time they visit a flower they transfer far more pollen than social bees do. Solitary bees are amazingly effective pollinators for crops and flowers; a single solitary mason bee can achieve the same amount of pollination as 120 worker honeybees. Most solitary bees collect pollen from a range of different plants (although they especially like daisies and peas!). They can be helped by planting native wildflowers which flower in different months, to make sure that there is always some food available, and by avoiding insecticides. In Whittlesey, the unique mud walls are often used as a nesting place by solitary bees – if you look at a wall you will be able to see the bee-holes which they have used over many generations. Come and see our exhibition about the Mud Walls of Whittlesey on Straw Bear Saturday, and collect a free pedometer and pack of healthy walks (while stocks last).
