Health

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better

TOXICITY We are surrounded by substances that our bodies do not like, and that could cause harm. These substances can be in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink or the things we touch. Examples include carbon monoxide, chemicals used to treat water, additives in foods and varnishes we use to treat wood. These substances exist only in trace quantities, but nevertheless are toxic to our bodies. Toxicity is not an advent of modern living, although this has vastly increased our exposure to it. Fortunately, the body has developed ways of dealing with it. Our skin provides the first barrier. The skin is a tightlyknit barrier colonised by bacteria and covered in an oily substance which contains immune cells. All of these attributes contribute to keeping the toxins out. This why we can have paint, glue and even use strong substances like white spirit on our skin without getting sick. If the toxins get through this barrier – that is, if we ingest or breathe them in – then the next line of defence is our liver, which acts as a detoxifier. It sifts through the contents of the blood, separating it into bad and good. ‘Bad’ substances are reacted with other chemicals to nullify their toxicity, then sent to one of the following places: • the intestines for removal via our stools; • the bladder for removal via our urine; • or the skin for removal via our sweat.

We must be careful because, like any containment system, things degrade. The nullified toxins degrade, as do the fat cells, and so as time goes by the chance of a leak increases. We must also acknowledge that the amount of exposure to toxins is continually increasing as technological advancements and impact on the climate increase. Therefore, the risk of overload and greater storage increases. The simplest way to mitigate toxic overload is to limit your exposure to chemicals. There are many easy ways of doing this, including: • Wearing gloves when handling household cleaning products • Cleaning in well ventilated rooms • Minimising processed foods • Filtering water • Wearing gloves and masks when performing DIY tasks Performing leisure activities in rural areas (think of all the toxins we are inhaling during a roadside run!) These are all simple ways in which we can reduce our toxicity levels, and increase the likelihood of a healthier later life.

If the three routes of disposal are jam-packed, then the body has no choice but to store it. It does this within the fat cells of the body, which act as an insulating container.

Health

Podiatrists Keep You Walking Podiatrists are health care professionals who have been trained to prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs. Podiatrists can also prevent and correct deformity, keep people mobile and active, relieve pain and treat infections. They can give you and your family advice on how to look after your feet and what type of shoes to wear. They can also treat and alleviate day-to-day foot problems. Our team of podiatrists can provide advice and treatment if you have painful feet, thickened or discoloured toenails, cracks or cuts in the skin, verrucae, or any other foot-related problem. We can assess your feet and also prescribe orthoses, which are tailor-made insoles, to help to relieve arch, foot or heel pain. Orthoses go into your shoe to help to re-align your foot, take pressure off vulnerable areas of your foot, and help improve your foot function. Even if your feet are generally in good condition, you might consider having a single session of podiatry to have the hard skin on your feet removed, toenails trimmed, find out if you’re wearing the right shoes, (take your shoes with you for specific advice on footwear), or just to check that you’re looking after your feet properly. Podiatrists can also help with more complex foot problems, including preventing, diagnosing and treating injuries related to sports and/or exercise. General foot or heel pain is a common occurrence and a condition we treat regularly. In most cases the pain is caused by some form of mechanical

injury caused by small repetitive injuries that occur at a rate faster than the body can heal them. Your podiatrist can assess your feet, diagnose your problem and make recommendations for self-care at home, and provide a treatment plan to help solve your problem. Contact us today, on 01354 651200, for information about how we can help your foot problem, and like us on Facebook, for all the latest updates and offers.

A Sight for Straw Eyes!

January once again saw thousands of visitors flock to Whittlesey for the annual Straw Bear Festival. The spectacular day began as the Bear set off from the Manor Leisure Centre at 10.30am, before making his way through the town centre flanked by crowds of eager spectators on all sides. Visitors came from far and wide to enjoy the Festival’s numerous dance and musical performances (as well as a beverage or two!), and a large number rounded off the Saturday with a traditional barn dance at Sir Harry Smith Community College. The weekend’s festivities concluded with the burning of the Bear on the Sunday, as organisers reflected on another well-attended and thoroughly enjoyed event.

How do I get rid of Japanese Knotweed? • Do not try to cut, mow or strim it as this will make it spread. • Please do not put Japanese Knotweed in your green or brown bins, or take it to a recycling centre – it must be disposed of as controlled waste. For more advice on how to control and dispose of Japanese Knotweed, including chemical spraying and burning, visit: www.gov.uk/guidance/preventjapanese-knotweed-from-spreading. The site also contains a link to local controlled waste carriers who can dispose of it legally.

STOPPING THE SPREAD OF JAPANESE KNOTWEED Fenland District Council is raising awareness of Japanese Knotweed to help homeowners identify, control and dispose of Britain’s most invasive plant. The weed – which costs an estimated £165m a year to control in the UK - can grow through concrete and has a root system that can extend 3m in depth and 7m in all directions. FDC is taking appropriate action to eradicate it from land within its control, and the Council’s grounds maintenance contractor has also been trained in identifying the weed and treating it accordingly.

If you're concerned that Japanese Knotweed on your neighbour's land might spread onto your land, try and speak to them – they might not realise it is an issue. You can also report it to the Council for help to discuss the matter with those involved. Just go to www.fenland.gov.uk/parksandopenspaces. The Council would also welcome information on locations of Japanese Knotweed on its land and open spaces, so action can be taken.

Responsibility for controlling Japanese Knotweed rests with the landowner or occupier of the land. You do not have to remove the plant from your land, but you could be prosecuted if you allow it to spread onto someone else's property. How do I identify Japanese Knotweed? • It produces fleshy red tinged shoots when it first breaks through the ground. • It has large, heart or spade-shaped green leaves. • It has leaves arranged in a zig-zag pattern and has a hollow stem, like bamboo. • It can form dense clumps that can be several metres deep. • It produces clusters of cream flowers in late summer. • It dies back between September and November, leaving brown stems. 10

ACHIEVE NEW YEAR GOALS WITH SUCCESSFULslimmingworld.co.uk SLIMMER

0344 897 8000

A local mum of four has recently re-launched the Tuesday evening Slimming World groups. Charlene, who has been a slimmer herself for two years, has taken over the existing Tuesday PM groups and hopes to welcome lots of new members wanting to start their journey in 2018. The turning point for Charlene came as she viewed New Year’s Eve photos and couldn’t believe the person in the picture looking back at her. She was a comfy size 20 and almost fifteen stone. She decided to join Slimming World in January 2016, and since then has stuck with the group which supported and advised her through her journey. Having been a member for almost a year, during which time she had lost three stone, Charlene knew just how amazing the group was. It was at this point that she decided to become a Slimming World consultant herself.

COUNCILLOR SURGERIES WILL BE HELD IN GROSVENOR HOUSE FROM 9.30AM TO 10.30AM ON THE FIRST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH THROUGHOUT 2018. Councillors present on Saturday February 3rd will be: Councillor Ralph Butcher (District and Town Councillor) Councillor Julie Windle (Town Councillor) If you have any matters of concern and wish to discuss them with a Councillor, then please come along and let us know.

In January 2017 she re-launched the Whittlesey Wednesday 5.30pm and 7.30pm group with great success. Her Wednesday group has collectively lost over 300 stones – the equivalent of a large family car! Now a total of four stones lighter and thinner, happier and healthier than she has been for over fifteen years, Charlene is more comfortable in her own skin. She even got into her wedding dress this August – the first time ever since her wedding day fourteen years ago. This is all down to three extra easy steps that Slimming World offers to each and every adult in the country. The group even offers help and advice to children from the age of 11+. Join Charlene at Childers one Tuesday at either 5.30pm or 7.30pm, and start your journey of success. Call 07931 313201 for further information.

Little House of Fragrance is a Big Hit A new shop selling scented candles and bath bombs in Whittlesey is looking forward to a bright future, following a successful first month in business. Little House of Fragrance, in Market Street, opened its doors in December and is already proving a firm favourite with local shoppers. After a very successful opening Saturday – during which people queued outside in anticipation – a number of customers were back at the shop the very same week! The shop sells a massive range of Yankee candles (including exclusive American varieties only stocked by selected retailers) and Millefiori room diffusers, and is also a key retailer of Bomb Cosmetics products. What’s more, it offers a great loyalty scheme through which customers can collect points each time they shop, entitling them to free items or money off. The shop also provides discounts for Armed Forces, blue light and NHS workers.

Owner Haylea and her husband Richard, who served in The Household Cavalry Regiment for eleven years, had thought about starting their own business for some time. Haylea explains: “It’s long been a dream of mine to run a shop offering gifts such as Yankee candles, and last year we finally took the plunge. With few places in the Fenland area offering these kinds of products, we saw strong potential in Whittlesey.” “We’re a family-run business, and I like to think this shows in our personal customer service and emphasis on rewarding customer loyalty. I look forward to welcoming more customers to the shop – hopefully, for what will be the first of many visits!”

Matters WHITTLESEY NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN – PROGRESS SO FAR AND THE NEXT STEPS

The communities of Whittlesey and the surrounding villages are in the process of producing a Neighbourhood Plan – a document giving local people a say over local development by setting out their own planning policies, which are used to decide whether to approve or refuse planning applications. Great progress is being made on the Neighbourhood Plan. The process is being led by members of the Town Council with support from URBED, a Manchester-based urban design company. Back in March 2017 a questionnaire was delivered to every household in the parish to gather the thoughts of the community, and we then ran a community workshop in November at the Whittlesey Christian Church. You can find the results of both the questionnaire and the workshop on the WTC website. It’s important to remember that Neighbourhood Plan policies can only deal with the development and use of land, and so they can’t do much to address non-planning matters like litter or policing. However, issues like these can also be turned into valid policies by looking at them differently. For example, a desire for improved public transport could turn into a policy requiring new development to be close to bus stops. Using responses from the last workshop, URBED have suggested the following policies as starting points: • More local autonomy/engagement • More/better consultation • Policy to prevent developers challenging CIL/S106/Affordable housing • Mechanism to spend S106 locally • More developer contributions/infrastructure to support development • Transport strategy • Design policy 16

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

• Allocate land for industrial uses • Stronger policy on flood zone development • Policy on location of new development • Policy on parking provision for new development • Policy on housing mix • Arts and leisure policy • Encourage a supermarket • Engage with developers • Heritage protection policy • Highways policy • Allocate land for housing • Housing density policy • Strategy to provide adequate infrastructure • Landscape/biodiversity protection • Policy on back garden development • Sustainability policy for new homes • Policy to support business • Village separation policy Next, WTC will be running a workshop on Saturday 24th February, at Whittlesey Christian Church, where local people are invited to help develop draft policies for the Neighbourhood Plan. We understand that this is not familiar territory for most people, so URBED will be on hand to give some guidance and help you make sense of the results! Full details of the workshop will be on the Town Council website, www.whittleseytc.com, the Neighbourhood Plan Twitter feed @WhittleseyNP, and advertised locally - so keep your eyes peeled for more information soon! FROGLIFE GIVES ALLOTMENTS A WILD ADDITION Wildlife conservation charity Froglife and its BBC Children in Need funded education project, Green Pathways, have just completed a communal wildlife area at Whittlesey’s allotments, with the help of students from Sir Harry Smith Community College. The aim of the Green Pathways project is to improve confidence, social skills and positive behaviour in the young people involved, as well as to improve their knowledge, skills and appreciation of the environment. It’s about providing a high

quality green space which is good for wildlife, but also beneficial to the health and wellbeing of the people who use the space. With funding awarded by the Glassmoor Local Environment Fund, young people created a wildlife pond and a wildlife area, which includes a bug hotel, bee and bird boxes and wild flowers, for allotment holders and locals to enjoy. The Whittlesey Allotment and Gardeners’ Society, who also supported the project, are going to further improve the communal plot by adding raised beds, hedging and trees. The aim is to get Whittlesey-based primary schools involved in annual growing competitions sometime in the future.

LORRAINE CELEBRATES RECORD YEAR WITH AUSSIE SINGER PETER ANDRE A local Slimming World manager was congratulated on helping slimmers to change their lives by singer and TV presenter Peter Andre. Lorraine Killen, who manages Slimming World groups in Whittlesey, was delighted to get a chance to cuddle up to Peter when he presented the annual Slimming World Awards in Birmingham. The Mysterious Girl singer co-hosted the event with the organisation’s founder and chair Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE. In 2017 Peter supported Slimming World’s most successful fundraising event ever – The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw, which raised a recordbreaking £3.3 million in just two weeks. The event encourages Slimming World’s 900,000 members to donate the clothes and accessories that are now too big for them to Cancer Research UK. “I couldn’t be prouder of the members in Whittlesey,” said Lorraine. “Throughout 2017 they have lost fantastic amounts of weight, with many of them hitting their target weights, improving their health and boosting their confidence. Every week I feel extremely lucky to play even a small part in people’s achievements, and I felt very honoured to represent Whittlesey at the Slimming World Awards.” Peter said: “It was an honour to be invited to present the Slimming World Awards. I met so many incredible people who had lost amazing amounts of weight and transformed themselves inside and out. There’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that Slimming World, and people like Lorraine who run and manage the groups, are very special.” To be inspired to discover the real you with Slimming World in 2018, call 0344 897 8000 or visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk to find your nearest group. The event catered for about fifty guests, including special guests the Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Ralph & Mrs Pat Butcher. The Banjo Man, Sean Moyses, provided the entertainment, which was followed by a splendid buffet tea.

Your Garden

February Gardening Tips February already! An odd month for the gardener, as days can range from below freezing to overcast and wet, to sunny and spring-like. More than any other month, you need to watch the local conditions and act accordingly. After a fairly easy time in the allotment over the past few months, it is time to start thinking about the crops that you will grow this year, planting some seeds and preparing the soil. If you have not completed your winter digging, now is the time, so long as the soil is not too wet or frozen. Incorporate as much rotted down manure and compost as you can and then cover to keep the soil warm and some of the rain off. Runner bean and potato trenches can be prepared by digging to a depth of a spade and mixing in well- rotted compost. These can be left open until planting time. Make sure that you have got all of your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light, cool room where they can ‘chit’ (sprout shoots) before being planted out. If the ‘chits’ look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark. A number of seeds can be planted indoors, ready for planting out when the weather improves, and peas and broad beans can be planted out under cloches. Seeds that can be planted indoors or under cover include; broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage, sprouting broccoli: if the ground isn’t frozen, plant out garlic and shallots. 20

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

A good idea for sowing peas is to use lengths of plastic guttering: half fill them with good quality seed compost and sow the seeds about two inches apart, cover with compost, water and keep in a light spot under cover. Plant out by sliding them off the guttering into a shallow trench. What could be tastier than a rhubarb crumble made with fresh pink rhubarb? If your rhubarb crowns show signs of activity, now is an excellent time to force an early sweet harvest by covering with a big bucket. Other jobs that can be carried out are: • Removing dead leaves from cabbages and sprouts – if they start to rot, they can spread mould and mildew. • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year. • Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground. • Bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted. • Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes. • Winter prune apples, pears, currants, blackberries, hybrid berries, gooseberries. • The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm. • Order any seeds for the coming year and plan this year’s crop rotation. Happy Digging!

Do I Have to Use the Property Lawyer My Estate Agent is Recommending? By Michelle Rickard, PDR Property Lawyers

This is something I hear on a daily basis, and the quick answer is ‘no’. When your estate agent recommends a conveyancing solicitor, licensed conveyancer or property lawyer, it is likely the firm they are recommending are paying them a ‘referral fee’. This fee, which can be in the hundreds of pounds, is usually passed on to you, the client. Read the small print before you sign any agreements! Every law firm should detail how much they receive from the estate agent for passing business to them. The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) have a strict referral code. Solicitors and licensed conveyancers are required to set out a full quotation which details their fees, the disbursement costs and associated expenses with your transaction. They are also required to reveal how much they paid for your referral, and I suggest you ask them for details of the referral fee they have paid for your (potential) custom. In addition to checking the amount of money you, the client, are paying for your referred business,

I strongly recommend that you get at least three quotes for your conveyancing. Fees for leasehold and freeholds within different valuation brackets can vary widely. Also search for reviews of the firms you are interested in working with. In summary, when buying or selling a property it is vital that you appoint a lawyer that you can trust to act in your best interests; one who will have the experience to complete the transaction properly and in a timely manner, and who will charge you a fair price. Everyone has the right to choose their own lawyer. Both the SRA and the CLC rigorously state that its members are meant to ensure that their client has chosen them to act without pressure being exerted upon them to do so. If you are being pressurised into choosing a lawyer as outlined above, refuse firmly and advise that you will seek the advice of the SRA or CLC – this usually does the trick!

Beware of Financial Agreements on Divorce without a Clean Break Order – by Rebecca Woodley

Rebecca Woodley, a family solicitor at Fraser Dawbarns and member of Resolution, talks about the importance of getting a Clean Break Order in the case of separation and divorce. I give every client I see in relation to divorce the same advice, a divorce does not end financial claims. To guarantee that neither party can make a further financial claim on the other, a separate application must be made for a Clean Break Order. Providing the parties are agreed, this is a paperwork exercise so nobody needs to attend court. We prepare the paperwork which is approved and signed by the parties and the lawyers. The cost is usually based on the solicitor’s hourly rate and there is a court fee of £50. The other party does not have to be represented but often requires some advice and this is recommended. In some amicable separation cases, the parties agree to wait until they have been separated for two years before proceeding with the divorce. They agree on the arrangements for the children and they agree financial matters. The house may be transferred to one party, with the other party receiving a lump sum. No solicitors are involved and everything is dealt with by agreement. The problem with this is that the agreement is not legally binding. I have recently seen a client where this is exactly what happened. The wife kept the house and paid the husband a lump sum, assuming the husband could not come back for more. Unfortunately, the

way they calculated the husband’s lump sum was not in accordance with the way the court would deal with it. The value of the property had also increased over the last two years, putting the wife in a better financial position than the husband. Also, the husband had not invested well; he had not purchased property and his lump sum had reduced, leaving the wife in an even better financial position. The husband instructed solicitors in relation to the divorce and was advised that the financial agreement was not legally binding and he could claim a further lump sum from the wife. With no Clean Break Order in place, the husband applied to the court for a further payment. The wife was understandably distressed. She thought she owned the house outright with no further claim by the husband possible, but she has now agreed to pay a further lump sum of £35,000. When a relationship breaks down, many people are concerned that instructing a solicitor will be expensive and that it could worsen the situation. They believe it is more amicable and preferable to reach an agreement without involving a solicitor, but the very opposite is often true. Fraser Dawbarns will represent your interests. In many cases, we will just advise on the agreement the parties have reached themselves and help to make that agreement legally binding. Our clients then have peace of mind, knowing that the other party cannot make any further claims against them or change the agreement.

Consumer Advice

Simple Steps to get your Finances in Order – Professionally and Hassle-free! THERE aren’t many of us who particularly enjoy talking about financial planning (unless of course it’s our chosen career path!) – and perhaps even less of us who fully understand the many courses of action available. Financial planning is an ongoing process to help us make sensible decisions about money that can, ultimately, help us achieve our goals in life. It’s not just about buying products like a pension or an ISA. There are many decisions which we have to make during the course of our lives and, at significant life stages, that means carefully planning our cash. There’s choosing the right mortgage, saving or investing for our family, and protecting them in the event of the unexpected, and let’s not forget about planning for later life and retirement. There is also the legal side to consider. It may be a surprise to know that – according to research – one in four people aged fifty-five and over do not have a will, a legal document which determines who receives your assets and estate when you die. And, while many of us don’t feel comfortable about talking openly on the subject of wills, or Lasting Power of Attorney, a greater understanding of the process and banishing the taboo could prevent your affairs being left in the hands of strangers when you die. Will-making is certainly not just a thought that should be reserved for the older generation. In fact, making a will or an LPA while younger, healthy and of sound mind can allow you to get your finances in order and continue to enjoy your life – knowing that things will be taken care of when you are not long able to, or have the mental capacity to do so. Other important topics can include wealth preservation, inheritance tax and planning/ paying for your funeral. So, with all this to think about – as well as constant changes in legislation – where is your first port of call for advice and help?

Valentine's Day - February 14th - What’s that all about then? Take a brief romantic stroll through the centuries, up to today’s commercial orgy of flowers, jewellery and chocolates. In Ancient Rome, February 13th, 14th and 15th were celebrated as “Lupercalia”, a pagan fertility festival, seen as a basis for a celebration of love on this date. AD 289 - A Christian, Valentine of Rome, is martyred under Emperor Claudius. While in jail, this priest is said to have converted his jailer by healing his blind daughter’s sight. He is later said to have fallen in love with the daughter, sending her a note saying “From your Valentine”, but this is apocryphal. AD 496 - Pope Gelasius declared February 14th to be “St Valentine’s Day”, a Christian feast day to match the still-popular pagan festival of Lupercalia. AD 1382 - Geoffrey Chaucer writes his Parlement of Foules (or “Parliament of Fowls”), which is widely taken to be the first linking of St Valentine’s Day to romantic love. Celebrating the engagement of Richard II of England and Anne of Bohemia, he wrote: “For this was on St. Valentine’s Day/ When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate”. AD 1601 - St Valentine’s Day has entered the popular consciousness to the extent that Shakespeare mentions it in Ophelia’s lament in “Hamlet”: “To-morrow is Saint Valentine’s day,/ All in the morning betime,/And I a maid at your window,/To be your Valentine.”

Mid-18th century - The passing of lovenotes becomes popular in England, a precursor to the St Valentine’s Day card as we know it today. Early ones are made of lace and paper. 1797 – “The Young Man’s Valentine Writer” is published, suggesting appropriate rhymes and messages, and, as postal services became more affordable, the anonymous St Valentine’s Day card became possible. By the early 19th century, they become so popular that factories start to mass-produce them. Mid-1980s - The commercialisation continues: noting the sales effect on chocolate, flowers and cards, the diamond industry gets involved, promoting St Valentine’s Day as a time for giving jewellery and so the “tradition” takes off. AD 2017 - An estimated 1 billion St Valentine’s Day cards will be sent worldwide this year, making it the second most card-heavy celebration, after Christmas.

- The Top 10 Aphrodisiac Foods (DO try this at home!)

The food you consume can have a direct impact on your sex life, affecting your hormones, brain chemistry and energy and stress levels. Some foods have psychoactive properties, others arouse because they are psychologically suggestive, and some can actually increase blood flow to the genitals.

10

ASPARAGUS

An English herbalist from the 17th century, Nicholas Culpepper, wrote that asparagus “stirs up lust in man and woman.” It is a great source of potassium, fibre, vitamin B6, vitamins A and C, thiamin and folic acid.

9

ALMONDS

Throughout the centuries, almonds were regarded as fertility symbols. The aroma of almond supposedly arouses passion in females and provides high doses of vitamin E, magnesium and even fibre.

8 AVOCADO

Its shape gives it away! The Aztecs called the avocado ahuacuatl, or “testicle tree”, seeing the fruit hanging in pairs on the tree as resembling testicles. Avocado is rich with folic acid, vitamin B6 and potassium.

7

BANANAS

BASIL

Basil has a fantastic aroma that is said to have an aphrodisiac effect; it is also very stimulating. Using sweet basil in a pasta sauce will be sure to get your heart racing! 42

OYSTERS

Pure chocolate, the king of natural aphrodisiacs, contains a host of compounds including anandamide, the psyochoactive feel-good chemical, and PEA (phenylethylamine), the “love chemical,” which releases dopamine in the pleasure centres of the brain and peaks during orgasm.

Figs are steeped in history, being mentioned in the Bible (Adam and Eve wore fig leaves to cover their private parts), whilst the ancient Greeks held them as sacred, associating them with love and fertility.

Very strong smelling and perhaps a bit of a turn-off, but likely to provide added strength to the male, as the allicin in the garlic will increase levels of blood flow in vital regions!

By its shape, the connection with sexuality is quite obvious, but bananas are loaded with potassium, magnesium and B vitamins. It also contains chelating minerals and the bromeliad enzyme, said to enhance the male libido.

6

5

Whittlesea

Oysters may be thought an aphrodisiac because of their high zinc content, which helps produce sperm and increases libido. Raw oysters are best served with a glass of chilled Champagne for a truly romantic meal!

HONEY

Honey is a great source of boron, a trace mineral that helps the body use and metabolize oestrogen, the female sex hormone, and this mineral may also enhance testosterone levels in the blood, the hormone responsible for promoting sex drive and orgasm in both men and women. FE BR U A R Y 2 0 1 8

What is Love? – by Holly-Jean

Love is probably the trickiest thing to describe in the world. It’s in everyone, somewhere, but just not everyone finds it. And, that sounds super cheesy but hey-ho it’s Valentines, so grab your bucket and keep on reading – it’s about to get smooshy. Love is supposedly patient and kind. Romance apparently has a lifespan and though the majority of us seek it, most of us are actually quite confused about what ‘love’ actually means. And, as I’m writing this, I’m googling ‘what is love?’ but, it isn’t something you can actually put into words. I’m reading – “love is without judgement” and “love is loving everything that one person does”. And the cynical part of me is thinking, “Well yeah, I love my boyfriend but do I judge him when he eats his dinner, and mine too? Yes, I love him, but my god if he snores one more time I’m just... I’m just going to lose it.” All of these different depictions of love make us question everything we know; all of these opinions and different ways that people conduct their relationships and rules and stipulations - in reality, it’s all absolute rubbish. They make us question whether we are doing the whole ‘love’ thing right! But for what? You and your partner, whether they’re human, imaginary, or cat. (Whatever floats your boat, it’s 2018). Are you both happy? Whether they can be gross, or they wind you up sometimes, or sometimes you literally want to tear their perfect little head clean off – if you love them, you will just know. It will literally hit you one day when they’re laughing or even when they do the stupidest thing. It won't be a gift or

44

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

an occasion; it will be so minuscule and ridiculous that you cannot even describe it – but when you know, you’ll know. Alright, this is getting crazy soppy now and I want to be funny so, let me add this little bit. Over the Christmas break, I got a little podge – not much, but a little. And I’d recently had my nails done, so I was struggling to do my jacket up. And I said to my boyfriend, “Tom, I’m finding it so hard to actually do my jacket up at the moment!” and he remarked, lovingly, with “Well Hol, you’ve had a lot of cheese and biscuits this holiday.” My caring partner, ladies and gentlemen. I’m joking, not about what he said, it’s with me for life, but in all seriousness, and it sounds so cheesy, but I absolutely adore the big idiot. He can be infuriating, but he’s my best friend, and no matter how many times I imagine his head exploding, I could never thank him enough for showing me what love is. But I’m only on about love between partners. Love is everywhere – love is when your mum tells you to put a coat on so you don’t get cold, or when she’s way too honest about something you didn’t really need to hear. Thanks, mum! Love is packed into this strange world in little ways we couldn't even comprehend. And, I think that’s what makes it magical. This February, when you’re sick and tired of Valentine's, have a little think about not just buying someone something to prove your love, but just show them in little ways... be patient, be kind. Be everything you think love is, and I’m sure you’ll work it out. Or, the less conventional way of dealing with Valentine's – eat your bodyweight in chocolate... you got this. FE BR U A R Y 2 0 1 8

Burrilliant Creations

Made with Love

Home is where the heart is, and this decorative fabric hearts bunting is sure to help you spread the love for Valentine’s Day. Whether for yourself or a loved one, Kathryn Burr at Burrilliant Creations takes us through how to make this heartfelt gift: All you need is love, and a few craft supplies. • Sewing needle, thread, and fabric pins. • Fabric for 10 bunting hearts (such as colourful, patterned craft cotton). • 10 x 14cm slender ribbons (to attach to the hearts). • Thicker 2m long ribbon (to hang the bunting from).

Step 3 • Sew each of your hearts, with the seam 1cm from the edge. (You can also sew this by hand, looping your needle and thread up and down through the fabric to create a running stitch). • Leave a 3cm gap in one side of each heart to place the stuffing in.

Step 4 • Stuff each of the hearts until plump, and then sew the gap shut.

• A piece of card (for a heart shape template).

• Tie knots in the loose thread and, for a professional finish, sew this thread through the heart and trim the excess.

• Soft polyester stuffing (fabric scraps or even cotton wool works just as well).

• Trim the edges with the pinking shears to neaten the hearts.

• Pinking shears (creates a decorative crimped edge and stops the fabric from fraying).

• Loop the long ribbon through the heart ribbons, one at a time, leaving a 15cm gap at both ends and inbetween each heart.

Step 1 • Create your card heart template (14cm wide, 14cm long). • Lay your heart template on the fabric and cut two pieces for each heart.

• Place the two pieces for each heart together, with the fabric pattern facing out on both sides. • Make a loop with the slender 14cm ribbons and place 2cm of the tips inside the middle dip of each heart, and pin in place. This will create the ribbon loop for the hearts to hang from.

D II SS C C O O V V EE RR II N N G G D

• Tie a knot in the main long ribbon around each of the smaller ribbons to keep the hearts in place. • Repeat until all 10 hearts are tied onto the main ribbon. Your bunting is now all ready to proudly display, or to be given as a beautiful gift for a special someone this Valentine’s Day!

“I Think I’d Like to be a Veterinary Surgeon!” – by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

Many people like the idea of being a veterinary surgeon, but have no idea of how to go about it, or exactly what the job entails. It involves much more than just what we see in TV programmes such as The Yorkshire Vet or Bondi Vet. Being a vet is often compared with being a doctor, but if you think about it, a doctor deals with only one species, whereas a vet deals with many more. Cats, dogs, rabbits, horses, sheep, cows, snakes, tortoises, birds, fish… the list is huge! We mustn’t forget, too, the more exotic zoo animals and wild animals in the field. A doctor, or GP, will see you in the clinic and then refer you to someone to carry out further diagnosis (such as blood tests) or surgery. A veterinary surgeon, on the other hand, has to be able to take bloods and do tests, do x-rays and ultrasound scans, be an accomplished surgeon in all areas, and to be an anaesthetist while concentrating on surgery!

The potential student must then go through a gruelling interview process with both practical and academic tasks. During their time at university (usually around five years in duration), vet students will go through many more weeks of experience in practice, along with all of the usual lecture hall studying, then sit a series of exams at the end of the degree. Once qualified, the new veterinary surgeon must then register with the governing body, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), to be able to practice in the UK. From then on they must undergo several hours of continuing professional development (CPD) in order to keep their accreditation.

When your pet comes into practice feeling under the weather, if the cause isn’t obvious the vet will do a series of tests and investigations, then interpret the results before deciding upon a course of action. A vet cannot ask their patient where the pain or discomfort is, so they have to work it out for themselves. Some species, such as cats and rabbits, are very good at hiding pain and it is often difficult to discern just what the problem is.

When a vet is explaining your pet’s health issue to you, they may need to use words that most of us have no hope of spelling – just spare a thought for the many foreign vets that grace the profession and keep our practices running up and down the country! Not only do they have to have a command of the English language good enough to converse with us, they must also be fluent in the technical side of the profession to be able to discuss cases with other vets, or to explain an issue to the client.

There are several universities where veterinary medicine can be studied, and they all have slightly different entrance requirements. Generally, they require three A-Levels at top marks and between six to sixteen weeks of work experience in a variety of practices, for a wide range of experience.

Most of us struggle to put together a few words on holiday to order a beer, let alone discuss a case of diabetes or liver failure! It’s a great skill to be able to do this, and the profession and our pets are very grateful to them, along with the great number of native English speaking vets in our practices.

Church Matters Introducing Revd. Staffan Dawkins: Team Curate,Whittlesey, Pondersbridge and Coates Staffan grew up in a Christian home in Jamaica, where he worked in banking and marketing while pursuing his other interests in the performing arts and volunteering for an international charity, whose main aim was to relieve the poverty of disenfranchised children from poorer communities in Kingston. In spite of Staffan’s active life outside of church, he remained an active member of his church community. Staffan decided to start a new life by moving to London, where he returned to higher education and his philanthropic interests led him to a career in professional advocacy. He then began working across several London boroughs, where his main role was to assist his clients in making informed choices about their care and treatment. Staffan continued to be involved in the parish churches where he lived in Lewisham and Islington, helping to set up and run youth groups amongst

other activities. In 2009, he began a discernment process towards the ordained ministry and in 2011, it was recommended he be trained for ordained ministry within the Church of England. Staffan did his training at the South East Institute for Theological Education, London, and Westcott House, Cambridge. He was ordained in the summer of 2015 and moved to the Benefice of Stanground and Farcet, where he served the first two years of his curacy. Staffan is now Team Curate with the Whittlesey, Ponderbridge and Coates team. He is looking forward to the exciting challenges, opportunities and learning curves which lie ahead, as he makes himself available to God’s will and purpose for his life and future ministry. On his day off, Staffan enjoys meeting up with his family and friends. He also enjoys visiting the theatre and art galleries when time permits, as well as the occasional hike. He looks forward to meeting you! Reverend Nigel

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH

How Important is Belief? During a visit to the USA, my host was an avid supporter of a basketball team which had known better days. He was really keen to introduce me to a very successful basketball coach who had been invited to take over this failing team. Until this coach took over the reins, no one could get to the bottom of why the team was sliding uncontrollably into lower rankings. None of the players had lost their passion for either the game or the club, yet something was seriously wrong. Very quickly this experienced coach identified what he believed was the root cause of the problem, and immediately set about rectifying it. His conversations with each team member, and his observations of the positive way they interacted with each other off the pitch, skill and passion for the game, told him that the answer was not to be found in implementing what he had been invited to do – create a new set of tactics and game plan. He knew that this team had lost something

so basic and fundamental, that without its restoration, nothing would work: (1) Belief in themselves (2) Belief in their coach He devised and implemented a plan which in a relatively short time saw them making progress back to their previous winning ways. Two hundred years ago, Jesus made this amazing statement in Mark 9: 23: “If you can believe, all things are possible to the one that believes.” As a church we have proved that statement to be true on numerous occasions; the transformation of our building, the changed lives of many members, and the miracles of provision for our growing number of community projects, to name but a few. Join us every Sunday at 10.45am for a faith lift, and to learn more.

Wisbech Grammar Sixth Formers Selected to Play for The Lambs 1st XV Captain and Vice-Captain, Oliver Mann and Bradley Hutler, alongside the 1st XV full-back Jack Trundley, have been selected for the Independent Schools RFC U18 National XV (The Lambs). The Lambs exists to create openings for boys to showcase their rugby skills at a representative level, and during the season the boys will compete in a tough fixture programme both at home and abroad. They will face a mixture of Academy sides, such as Premiership Champions Exeter Chiefs and Gloucester Rugby, representative sides such as Crawshay's Welsh and Irish Exiles and international sides such as Croatia U19s and Italy U19B while on tour.

The Independent Schools RFC was set up to promote traditional rugby values and a 'Corinthian' spirit as their style: this is to play unreserved 'heads up' running rugby in a fast and expansive style, which is player rather than coach-led.

The freedom to express talent, unfettered by league results and structured 'coaching,' leads to a style of play which excites players, their parents, and supporters of the game.

Phil Webb, Director of Sport at the school, said: "I am delighted for the boys, as they have worked hard this season and their efforts have paid off."

TOO FAT… TOO THIN… TOO TALL… TOO SMALL…

swings, and can also be a factor in risky weight loss strategies, eating disorders and mental health disorders like depression. A healthy body image in childhood can lay the foundations for good physical and mental health later in life, whilst an unhealthy one can have long-lasting consequences.

Sound familiar? With the pressure to achieve the perfect body across social media, adverts and magazines, and with bullying at an all-time high, a lot of young people are growing up with insecurities and a lack of body confidence. At a time when a young person’s body is growing and changing, when they may be feeling self-conscious and hyper-aware of every blemish and extra pound, being bombarded with ‘ideal’ images – often computer-enhanced and impossible to measure up to – can be hard to cope with. It’s an issue which affects boys as well as girls. A positive teenage body image is an important part of healthy self-esteem, and young people who feel good about their body are more likely to have good mental health. An unhealthy teenage body image can lead to negative moods and mood F E BRUA RY 2018

It’s therefore important to help young people accept themselves; to see that people come in all shapes, sizes and different skin tones, and it’s these things that make us all unique and individual. Encourage them to be proud of things in themselves that aren’t related to appearance, like having a sense of humour, trying hard, being caring or being helpful. Encourage them to talk, to get their feelings and thoughts out. Finding someone they feel comfortable to talk to could make a world of difference to how they deal with their issues. THE ALDERMAN JACOBS SCHOOL CHOIR

At AJS we are all very proud of our choir. Many of our children from Year 4 upwards meet regularly to rehearse and perfect their performances.

ONCE UPON A TIME AT PARK LANE… Year Two children at Park Lane Primary and Nursery School started off the new term with a day that could have come straight out of a history book. The children kicked off their new ‘Towers, Tunnels and Turrets’ topic with a 'castle day', during which they dressed up as various historical figures. There were kings, queens, princes, princesses, knights, lords, ladies, royal guests and even a royal portrait artist and a jester! Alison Prince, Year Two teacher said, "Every child was immersed in the various activities, including learning to dance Tudor-style and the amazing lute playing by Jingles the Jester. It was wonderful to see the children in their costumes, and help them get into role and enhance their learning.”

Over the last year they have entertained on a number of occasions, including singing in St Mary’s as part of the Whittlesey Festival and entertaining a full congregation at both carol and Christingle services. The choir also provided festive carol singing at the Buttercross last December, where many parents and past pupils sang along and, despite the cold weather, the children thoroughly enjoyed performing to their audience! “This was a first for us, but well worth the walk to see so many happy faces” and “Good to see the local school doing something for the community” were both quotes heard by staff supporting the event. The school would like to thank the Town Council for their support with this activity. Our school choir has been led by Mrs Sarah Combes for many years, but they still find new ways to sing new songs and with such happy faces. Over the next year we look forward to seeing them out and about again!

Everyone in the royal court bowed and curtsied to King Henry and Queen Sophie. Mrs Prince and Mr Adams would like to say thank you to all of the parents who provided the fantastic costumes for the children. During the rest of the half term the children will learn about different towers around the world and how castles have changed over time, and will visit a real castle. 52

OFSTED PRAISE PROGRESS AT NEW ROAD SCHOOL Following an Ofsted inspection in December 2017, New Road Primary School is delighted to report that it is now out of the Special Measures category and is working hard to improve even further. The Inspectors recognised the progress made since their last visit in September 2015, and acknowledged a number of strengths within the school. These included Early Years and Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare, which were both graded as ‘Good’. School leaders recognise that there are still areas to work on, and so agree with Ofsted’s overall verdict of ‘Requires improvement’. Jonathan Digby, CEO of the Aspire Learning Trust (of which New Road has been a part since July 2016), welcomed the report: “We’re delighted that the school is now out of the Special Measures category. We are most certainly not complacent, and are all working hard to make the school good or better in everything we do.”

School News

The report identified the following strengths: • The Headteacher has managed the recent turbulence in staffing well and has put in place a strong leadership team. • The new Trust has taken decisive action to improve outcomes by strengthening governance, using high-quality support from an external adviser and sharing good practice between both primary schools in the Trust. • The behaviour of pupils is good. Pupils enjoy learning, are well cared for and feel safe. • All groups of pupils make good progress in the early years from their different starting points. • The curriculum is a strength of the school. Thoughtful and stimulating activities have been introduced which are having a positive impact on progress. Rob Litten, the school's Executive Headteacher, said: "There have been a huge number of changes and improvements since the last inspection, and we look forward to continuing to work with the community to provide the very best education for all of the children at New Road Primary School."

FOOD AND FUN AT LADYSMITH WI The meeting in January saw the year off to a very positive start, with the AGM followed by a fun auction of 'redundant' gifts looking for new homes.

RECORD COLLECTION FOR LIONS SANTA FLOAT

Whittlesey and District Lions Club would like to thank all the residents of Whittlesey, Coates, Eastrea and Turves who supported this year's Santa float. We'd also like to mention our brilliant helpers who join us every December, giving up a few of their evenings to walk with us. On top of all that, our one evening off from the Santa float was spent on our tombola stall at the Christmas Extravaganza! We really couldn't do it without you! We collected a record amount this year and we can't wait to allocate funds to local charities and good causes in 2018.

We are lucky in February to have Veronica Hewins demonstrating Indian cookery and spices for members and friends. This includes a chance to taste the dishes she has prepared, and we are all very much looking forward to it. The competition is an Indian spice. Our next lunch outing is on February 20th, to the newly opened Harvest Barn Café and Farm Shop – so the foodie theme continues in 2018! We meet monthly on the second Tuesday, and the next date is Tuesday February 13th at 7.30pm, in St. Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane. More information is available from Sue (01733 205927), Liz (01733 689599) or on our Facebook page.

Don't forget to keep your used postage stamps for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People – collection boxes are at the Post Office and Jones the Butchers.

WHAT’S COMING UP AT THE COATES WI Coates WI would like to thank the members from Whittlesey who joined us for our December meeting, with the Upwood Ukuleles supplying us with some fun festive music and Christmas spirit. It was a very enjoyable evening, and we look forward to a reflexology demonstration at our February meeting. Looking further ahead, our March meeting will featuring cupcake decorating with Brenda Church, and our April meeting will be ‘Bees’ with Sue Jakeman. Guests and new members are always welcome at our meetings, which are held on the first Wednesday of every month in Coates Public Hall, at 7.30pm. A LOVE OF MUSIC AT WHITTLESEY WIND ENSEMBLE February is often referred to as the month of love, and at Whittlesey Wind Ensemble we all share a love of music (and fun!). Last month we appointed a new musical director, Kevin Mackie, and began to raid our extensive and exciting music library. Our current theme is music from ‘Around the British Isles’ for our late spring concert. We are also aware that there are many anniversaries for the Armed Forces, so are considering music to celebrate these during the year. This time of year is very exciting for band life as we play for both pleasure and purpose, perfecting our technique on a range of musical genres and

exploring what we would like to focus and work on to suit all members. We are always on the lookout out for new members to join our musical family, so why not pop along and give us a try? We meet every Thursday at the Methodist/United Reformed Church in Whittlesey from 7.45-9.15pm. Please get in touch and feel free to ask us any questions: • Email us at whittleseywind@gmail.com • Visit whittleseywindensemble.com. • Check us out on Facebook for recent pictures and upcoming events!

Peterborough Wildcats to Roar Again! Have fun, make friends, play football!

I

CA Sports Football Club has teamed up with the Football Association and SSE to re-launch Peterborough SSE Wildcats for 2018. The project was designed to inspire girls aged between 5 and 11 to get involved in football, as part of the FA’s objective to double girls’ participation in football by 2020.

Peterborough SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Club will provide girls with the opportunity to play football and take part in organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment, created exclusively for girls. Two hundred clubs were established across England throughout the spring and summer of 2017, with ICA Sports powering the Peterborough club. 2018 sessions will take place on a weekly basis, with new sessions for 5-7 year olds (school years 1-3) running every Sunday morning in the Sports Hall at Stanground Sports Centre. They will provide a safe environment where girls with no football experience can: • have fun engaging with sport; • develop fundamental skills; • try a variety of sessions; • learn new things; • and lay the basis for a lifelong love of sport! Girls aged 8/9 and 10/11 are already catered for with weekly sessions on Wednesday and Thursday evenings respectively.

Peterborough SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Club runs in conjunction with Huntingdonshire FA and in partnership with SSE (supporters of girls’ football participation and sponsor of the Women’s FA Cup), with additional support from UEFA, FIFA and the Youth Sport Trust. The centre utilises the fully qualified and highly experienced coaches of ICA Sports FC to offer girls a local location where they can get involved in playing. Steve Purnell, Peterborough SSE Wildcats Head Coach, has been involved in the development of female football for the past ten years, and has seen hundreds of girls start playing and progress to organised teams at local and professional clubs. 2018 sessions start from February 18th and cost £3 each, or £10 a month. More details can be found by visiting www.icasports.com, or by contacting Steve Purnell on 07964 496259 or steve@icasports.com.

Controlling Money is Like Controlling Heat by Eamonn Dorling

We can think of money as being like the heating which warms our homes – it is essential in keeping us safe and comfortable, but must be controlled. A hot radiator radiates heat, and transfers it to its surroundings via conduction. A radiator might also cause the curtains to move by convection currents of air. A combination of these can create a warm and comfortable home, the cost of which might be controlled to some extent by insulation and not leaving the window open. ‘Money’ could refer to savings, investments or any type of income. • Some funds are used for specific living expenses (e.g. council tax, utilities, food, and fuel). I think of these as radiated heat, as it is directed in a specific direction. • Other expenditure such as entertainment, transport costs, memberships, mortgage, internet access I think of as conduction, as they are closely connected to the standard and style of living you require. • Finally, there are the uncontrolled costs (convected heat loss) associated with treats, repairs, holidays and things we might otherwise do without. Just as insulation helps control heat loss when heating our home, a financial plan is how we reduce the running costs of a household and develop the arrangements that we require later in life. For example, placing your retirement arrangements in the ‘radiation’ side of expenditure will ensure the required level of funding becomes the norm. Other specific projects might include education costs, the holiday of a lifetime or a home extension. Then we keep a tight rein on unplanned expenditure – the ‘convected heat’.

Some expenditure is a ‘cost of living’, such as a life insurance policy to pay off the mortgage in the event of death, or an income protection plan that will replace the earnings of a breadwinner if he or she is unable to work. These monthly premiums are (normally) paid alongside all the other ‘boring but necessary’ bills. There will always be unplanned expenditure, and your buffer fund or rainy-day fund can provide short term funding that is topped up when further income arrives. A financial plan may involve setting up a cash flow plan that predicts how income and expenditure could be affected when a range of events occur. Sometimes a chart is created that shows a particular colour while income exceeds expenditure, but changes to a warning colour if the opposite occurs. Annual reviews help refine this approach. A good starting place is to clearly understand all the income and expenditure streams that apply, and any planned events over a given timescale. These could include children attending further education, replacement of a vehicle, a home move or retirement. At this time of year many start planning but get stuck, so if you need help just ask. An initial consultation is provided at no cost. Having a plan and working at it can create a warm glow! ■ Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The Local Music Scene

Time to Make a Change - by Dave Bailey

This month we look at ‘genres and collaborations.’ Many performers, whether they are instrumentalists or vocalists, need both inspiration and variety to maintain drive and enjoyment in performing. Even the seasoned professional artist trudging around the country on tour can find themselves wondering why they are doing night after night of the same material, only to retire tired to either a bland hotel room or narrow bunk on a tour bus. If you think money is the driving factor then you would probably be wrong. Most bands and artists on the professional tours just about break even once travel, road crew, venue hire, publicity, accommodation etc. have been taken into account. Only the major artists, whose ticket prices usually start at £80, approach a good return for their initial planned profit margin. The local gigging bands, after expenditure, normally cover costs and a few pints. So why do they do it? Music and performing becomes a way of life. Writing original songs and seeing the audience’s reaction can be satisfying and rewarding, but there are limits. Playing the same songs week in, week out is great from a comfort point of view – after all, it means there’s a lower chance of mistakes, the lyrics are ingrained in the memory, and the melody and chords flow effortlessly – but both performer and crowd can be left with that déjà vu feeling. Many local aspiring and seasoned artists can be found performing with more than one band, as a solo act or even playing different styles of music. Collaborating with other musicians, whether at an open mic or as an advertised act, introduces variety and improves playing skills. However, playing rock music in a pub band one weekend, F E BRUA RY 2018

followed by a solo acoustic set the next, requires different techniques, and the enjoyment from a number of people jamming at an open session depends on an ability to adapt to style and tempo changes, often not in keeping with the original track’s format. Performing covers can also be viewed in two ways. Attempting to faithfully recreate a song exactly as the original artist sounded is often impossible, even for some tribute acts. Vocal inflections and band instrumentation have to be exact, unless as a solo vocalist you are using a professional backing track. Putting your own spin on a cover has the benefits of being able to use the instruments available to best advantage and adjusting the key and tempo to suit your own voice, whilst still attempting to stay faithful to the genre. Two years ago, a group of us on the open mic scene decided to attempt a brand new (to us) song at every open mic slot we performed at for the entire year; a great way to increase our repertoire, even if some were only ever performed once, for the challenge! It resulted in some hilarious performances, but certainly spiced up the evenings and provided variety. As a performer it is good to try to mix it up. There are both powered and acoustic open sessions where all styles of music are regularly played locally (see the link below), and every two months a folk club is held in the Falcon Hotel. The key to enjoyment is to keep it varied. Local open mic listings can be found at www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm

Whittlesey Christmas Extravaganza – A word from Chairperson Lynn Palmer The virtually new Whittlesey Christmas Extravaganza Committee took the reins last April, with the intention of building on the many years of previous success and hard work of the old committee. Our aim was to make it an enjoyable and affordable event for all, especially families. We brought in new attractions, activities and a successful wristband system. We also wanted to allow the many organisations and charities who serve this town an opportunity to raise money.

This year we decided to expand the event by closing parts of Station Road and High Causeway, which allowed us more room for members of the public to move around and for more attractions. Another first for this year was the Children’s Colouring Competition, and the free to enter prize draw. Many local businesses helped us out with sponsorship and raffle prizes. Without them we would not have achieved as much as we did, and we are truly grateful to the following sponsors:

• Whittlesey Travel • Wrights • Buttercross Auctions • Richard Benn Lock & Safe • Savage Builders • Grosvenor Flooring • 1st Call Furnishings • Dream Elite Care • Jacko's Pet Foods • Briggate Garage • Mr and Mrs Baldry • Playbus • DC Site Services • Hugh Crane • Peterborough Heating Solution • The Family Extension • Forterra

Thank you also to the following who provided prizes for the Grand Draw:

Last but not least, thank you to Discovering Whittlesea for all their support.

• J Jones Butchers • Freeman and Daughters • Kellyvision, Making Waves • Acorn Lodge Kennels and Cattery • Muddy Paws Dog Grooming • AA Whittlesey Computers

2017’s event was a big learning curve for us all. We have listened to your feedback and hope to put some of this in place this year. We look forward to putting on another fantastic event!

Centuries of Experience Brought to Whittlesey Town Tyres, in Eastgate, has been in business for a year now. We chatted to owner Joseph about his reasons for setting up in Whittlesey, and his family’s long connection with the trade. Joseph grew up in the small town of Nurhak, Turkey. He’s been in the mechanics and tyre business all of his life but came to England twenty five years ago, where he has owned his own business for the last fifteen. But his connection with the trade goes back much further than that, as he explains: “My family has been involved in the same kind of trade for about five hundred years. They started off repairing wooden wheels for carts, then over time expanded into metalwork (horseshoes, axes and such) and then eventually into tyres. Even now, after all those years, if anyone needs anything made or repaired in the town of Nurhak, they come to my family!”

With a connection to the trade going back so many generations, Joseph’s expertise of tyres and mechanics is practically in his blood. But what brought him to Whittlesey? “I previously lived and worked in Enfield, London, but as time went by my wife and I became increasingly disillusioned with the area,” says Joseph. “We wanted our children to be brought up in a small town like the kind I grew up in, and when I found these premises on the internet it seemed perfect. We love Whittlesey.”

History

The History of the Mobility Scooter – by Jen Barback, Curator of Whittlesey Museum

Most Class 3 and some Class 2 mobility scooters are larger than the ‘reference wheelchair’ used in accessibility guidelines for public places and transport, so they cannot go everywhere that a manual wheelchair can.

I

f you walk through Whittlesey town centre you are likely to see mobility scooters in use or parked outside local businesses. These increasingly common travel buggies can be a lifeline for adults of all ages who struggle to walk for long distances, or who need to rest during a trip into the town centre. However, their critics resent seeing ‘vehicles’ on pavements or driving in amongst pedestrians with no formal licence, or fear that over-reliance on scooters will ultimately be unhealthy for the users. Mobility scooters are a relatively recent innovation, with the first modern ‘Powered Operated Vehicle’, or POV, being developed in 1968 by an American named Alan Thieme, who wanted to assist a family member with Multiple Sclerosis. This ‘Amigo’ scooter could travel at up to four miles per hour and led to the creation of several American copycat brands by the mid-1970s. In the UK, the Earl of Snowdon (the former husband of Princess Margaret) designed the three-wheeled ‘Chairmobile’ mobility aid in the early 1970s for a friend. It sold for around half the price of a powered wheelchair at the time and was intended primarily for indoor use. Mobility scooters are described as ‘invalid carriages’ in law: a manual wheelchair is a Class 1, while Class 2 includes powered wheelchairs and the lighter mobility scooters (limited to 4mph) which may be driven on pavements and do not require DVLA registration. Class 3 scooters have a top speed of 8mph but must be limited to 4mph on pavements, and can be driven on roads excluding dual carriageways and motorways. They must register with the DVLA for (zero rate) ‘car tax’.

68

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

Both the electric wheelchair and the original ‘invalid carriage’ were created after WW2 to help improve the lives of disabled ex-servicemen (motorised mobility tricycles had been produced since WW1, but never on a large scale). A fleet of one-person road vehicles were created by the NHS using motorcycle technology and steered with a tiller. These were intended as personal prosthetics, to get a single disabled person to a location and carry a manual wheelchair which they could then use when they arrived. The most common version was the ‘Invacar’, a three-wheeled powered vehicle with a fibreglass shell which could travel at the pace of city traffic. The scheme closed in 1981 with around 21,500 invalid carriages still in operation, although some individuals continued to use their vehicles until they were finally banned from UK roads in 2003, when they were recalled and the majority crushed amid concerns about their ongoing maintenance and safety. Rather than providing free vehicles, cash schemes like the mobility allowance and Motability gradually took over from the 1970s, helping people to buy and adapt a mainstream car or buy a powered wheelchair or mobility scooter. With 650,000 Motability users, the NHS only prescribes powered wheelchairs to people who receive a higher rate mobility allowance such as DLA, PIP or the War Pensioners Mobility Supplement. Many other people who would also benefit from using a powered wheelchair outside the home choose to privately purchase a mobility scooter as a cheaper substitute, rather than rely on a manual wheelchair which they may find challenging to use. JOIN NGNPUK FOR QUIZ NIGHT Local charity No Gain No Pain (NGNPUK) is holding a quiz night on Friday, March 2nd. The event takes place at Childers and begins at 7.30pm. Teams of up to six people will be able to test their general knowledge whilst enjoying a fish and chip supper – just specify fish or sausage when you purchase your tickets (gluten free option also available). Tickets cost £8.50 per person. Call or text Louise (07751 141005) or Gary (07736 387469), or find the group on Facebook. All profits go to NGNPUK, raising money for syringe drivers in the local area.

In memory of Rosalie, and to raise funds for ‘Rainbows Hospice’, we will be holding a Charity Evening on Saturday March 10th 2018 at The Cresset in Peterborough. During the evening, we will have a raffle and an auction.

AN APPEAL FOR RAINBOWS HOSPICE A heart-felt request has reached us from a reader, Mrs Kerrie Morgado, and we include some of her e-mail in the hope that you kind readers out there can help her raise much-needed funds for the Rainbows Hospice. “Rainbows is a Hospice who supports children and young people, and is a place where lifelimited children and their families can find care and support. My family and I have suffered the very sad loss of my beautiful granddaughter, Rosalie, who was just seven days old when she passed away. When Rosalie was born, we were informed that she would only survive for a matter of hours/days, as her bowels had not developed as they should.

We are hoping, and would be very grateful if you would be willing to offer a prize for either our raffle or auction or, if more convenient for yourselves, a cash donation, which would allow us to purchase a prize to raffle or to auction. Should you be able to help in any way, please send your donation to Kerrie Morgado, 82 High Street, Billingborough, Sleaford, NG34 1QD, otherwise I would be happy to collect. Should you have any questions associated with this request, please do not hesitate to contact me, (via e-mail at lucy.jackson1998@hotmail.co.uk, or 07850 092 115). Thanking you all for having read this request and hopefully acting upon it.”

During my daughter’s pregnancy, and after Rosalie was born, the charity ‘Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People’ were phenomenal in helping my daughter, and are still in contact with her, offering support, which has helped immensely in our grieving of Rosalie. F E BRUA RY 2018
