Saxon Muscle has a Powerful Presence

Saxon Muscle is a new business that’s already made a strong start in Whittlesey. The health and supplement shop attracted a big crowd when it opened its doors for the first time in Broad Street. The business is run by 29-year-old James Neville and was opened by local strongman Geoff Capes, a double winner of the World's Strongest Man title. James said: “It was great to have Geoff at our opening day. We had a fantastic turnout and the following few days have also been really good.” Saxon Muscle specialises in lifestyle, nutrition, diet and fitness, and has everything customers need, from losing weight to gaining size and power. James said: “We do everything from protein shakes to diet pills and pre-workout drinks, to clothing and lifting equipment, such as belts, straps etc.” James is a self confessed Strongest Man fan and trains at least three times a week. He first became seriously interested in opening the business after attending a strongman event in Stoke five years ago; since then, he has organised a number of similar events both locally and nationally. He said: “I really caught the bug and have since organised a number of events as a promoter and have also competed in amateur events around the country. I’ve been trained by Geoff and my PT Bob McStay, who were there on the opening day of the business.” Last month (March) James organised the Peterborough Strongest Viking event at Peterborough Lions Rugby Club which also featured Geoff as Head Referee and speaker. 4

He said that Saxon Muscle has already attracted a diverse range of customers of all ages and they have had people come in aged from 16 to 75. The split has probably been 50-50 between males and females. The business is designed to cater for virtually anyone who enjoys sport, exercise or training, from walking to cycling, and obviously fitness fans. “I have always enjoyed training. In my time I have weighed anything from 14 to 25 stone, so I know what it is like to be in different physical conditions. I’m really enjoying the business because I get to talk to people about what I’m interested in; it’s what I love.” James is helped in Saxon Muscle by his wife Chelsea (27) and he enjoys being part of a familyrun business. His father, Jan, is well-known in the town, having run J. Neville Opticians with his wife Diane for the past 12 years. As for the future, James intends to grow the business as well as continuing to organise events and is planning to hold another Strongest Viking day in Peterborough later in the year. Interesting articles to help you understand your body better

Intuition and Sixth Sense? We all know the feeling of intuition. ‘This just feels right.’ We do not consciously know why, but it just is. It’s an important part of our senses and has undoubtedly shaped our life. But what exactly is it? This article looks to explore this within the confines of human physiology. The advent of energies, higher guidance and aura governing our intuition is also a possibility, but this article would lose its focus should we delve into these as well. The confines of human physiology attribute intuition (sixth sense) to our subconscious brain. Our subconscious brain is many, many times more powerful than our conscious brain. We can define the subconscious brain as the part that performs all the functions we are not consciously aware of. We categorise these functions into: 1. Daily – Those activities essential for our life, e.g. our heart beat, hormonal secretion, breathing, etc 2. Awareness – processing the information gained from our senses to create a world for our conscious brain to explore 3. Memory management – although the access of memories is a conscious event, the process of categorizing and storing the experiences occurs behind the scenes. To understand intuition let’s use an analogy of a commentary team during a sporting event. There are usually two or three commentators (our conscious brain) keeping an eye on the overarching aspects of the game. Then, there are a large group of analysers (50-200 people) seated behind, feeding the commentators information. These analysers

[our subconscious brain] are looking at everything else, i.e. taking apart the strategy, looking at past records/results, analysing individual performances, counting stats, watching the weather, talking to team members on the sidelines, looking at the reactions of the fans, etc. They are then summarising and feeding this information to the commentators. Like the subconscious brain, these analysers vastly outnumber the commentators and are therefore able to process substantially more information. The commentators alone could give the viewer a good account of the game, but it is the analysers which enable the commentaters to bring the game alive and to provide a depth that is entertaining and deeply insightful to the viewer. In the same way the subconscious brain gives us the depth to make inspired decisions which we term intuition. It is unsurprising that intuition is attributed to sleep. When we are sleep-deprived we notoriously make bad decisions. Why, because the analysers are asleep!

Do you Suffer from Painful Verrucae or Unsightly Fungal Nails? WE CAN HELP YOU - We are pleased to offer new specialist treatments with our podiatrist, Sarah Richards at our March clinic.

Verrucae are a skin infection caused by a virus that invades the skin and causes visible lesions to appear on the skin. They may appear as a plaque of hard skin, with an irregular border and can have black dots, (blood vessels), visible. They can be on the soles of the feet or on the toes. The virus is contagious and can grow to bigger lesions and spread on your feet, and to other people. Over a period of time, your immune system can fight the virus to get rid of the verruca, but this specialist treatment can help with the more stubborn verrucae. Podiatrists have been having a lot success with a treatment technique called ‘needling’. This is proving to be a reliable treatment for the removal of warts, and is very practical for the busy person who cannot come in for regular sessions. Other treatments using acids and cryotherapy involve multiple appointments, which can add up a lot

of time out of work and expense, and rely on the patient being fit and healthy. Needling involves usually only one treatment session and a follow-up, six weeks later. The treatment itself involves a local anaesthetic and then, once 'numb', puncturing of the wart with a needle with the aim of innoculating the virus into the host to produce an immune reaction. Whilst the injection is a little unpleasant, the needling is pain-free. The foot is a little sore for a few days, but no worse than most of the other verruca treatments available. The good news is that, if you have multiple warts, we don't have to needle all of them to get a good result. Recent studies have shown verruca dry needling has a success rate of approximately 70%. RAILWAY STATION MASTERPLANS The future visions for Whittlesea and Manea Stations have been set out in Railway Station Masterplans. These Masterplans include a variety proposed improvements that can be delivered through short, medium and long term projects. One of the largest and most aspirational projects is proposed platform lengthening at both stations. Currently both Whittlesea and Manea have platforms only wide enough to accommodate 2 car trains. This has resulted in fewer opportunities for additional train services to stop at these stations and restricted door opening on some train services that do stop.

BRONZE AGE POTS FOR WHITTLESEY MUSEUM Whittlesey Museum has just received three rare prehistoric pots found near Whittlesey, which can now be seen in its early history gallery. Two of the pots were discovered in the early 1970s (before Whittlesey had a museum) by a local drag line operator working at a brickyard south of Peterborough. He took them to Chatteris Museum who gained permission to search the site for more and found shards including a very large pottery vessel next to preserved wooden posts embedded in the clay 12 feet below the ground.

Work has been ongoing to develop viable options to increase platform lengths at both stations to accommodate 4 car trains. Options have now been identified for each station that could achieve this. This consultation is to explain the work that has been undertaken so far to get to the options stage and share the details of each option with you. We would like your views on these proposals to help us with the selection process for the final option for each station.

Nearly three-quarters of the large pot was found and it was pieced together using local clay to reveal a family-sized cooking pot, partially blackened by fire. At the time the pot was dated to the Iron Age 4th Century BC, but it is now thought that it may have been made at the end of the Bronze Age, at around the time of the Must Farm settlement. Whittlesey Museum would like to thank the Curator of Chatteris Museum for offering a lengthy loan of the pots on the basis that it would be best for Whittlesey items to be displayed in Whittlesey. The pots are now on show beside the Eldernell Hoard, a collection of Bronze Age axeheads also found locally.

LOCAL AUTHOR’S BIG REVELATIONS Eastrea author Brian J Ford has a new book out next month. Covering his new theories about dinosaurs, it is titled 'Too Big to Walk', and reveals his fifty years of studying dinosaurs. The 500-page book also has some surprises, including the fact that Charles Darwin did not come up with the theory of evolution. Professor Ford said: “I have found that lots of previous philosophers wrote on that subject. Indeed, the phrase 'survival of the fittest' was not even thought up by Darwin, but by someone else entirely." The book will be published by HarperCollins in London. STREET PRIDE LITTER PICK-UP Street Pride braved the cold to do a litter pick on Station Road, Whittlesey and the surrounding area. Nine members took part and collected 13 bags of rubbish. Fred Mills of Street Pride said: “The litter in and around the station car park was particularly bad. I wonder what impression the passengers get of our town when they alight from the platform to be greeted with this amount of litter?” The next litter pick will be Saturday, April 7th at Gothic House near Eastrea. Helpers are welcome to come along and join the group.

Preheat the oven to 200Â°C /Gas Mark 6. Toss the asparagus in the olive oil so that all spears are well coated. Divide the asparagus into four equal bunches. Wrap each bunch in a bacon rasher, securing with a wooden skewer if necessary. Place on a roasting tray and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 10 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the bacon is crisp and the asparagus is tender.

April Gardening Tips

As temperatures rise, (we hope), and days lengthen, there is plenty to do on the allotment or vegetable patch: sowing, weeding and planting. However, beware as there is always a threat of night frosts and it is better to be cautious than to take a risk, as precious time will be wasted: don’t forget to cover early sowings with fleece or cloches if frosts are forecast. Now is an ideal time to prepare seed beds; so that seeds have a good chance of germinating, the soil should be broken down into small even sized particles and stones and other debris removed. Rake over the soil when it is fairly dry to level it, so that dips and hollows are smoothed out to create a flat surface that will drain more evenly. Create a fine tilth by dragging the rake back and forth, forwards at a shallow angle and backwards at 90 degrees to create the small even particles. If you forgot to manure in the autumn, you can still add really well-rotted manure or compost, but dig it in thoroughly. When they have developed two or more true leaves, young seedlings that were planted in trays or modules need ‘pricking out’ and putting into individual pots or larger modules. Lift them out carefully and always handle them by their leaves, not the stem. Keep an eye on them once they are in pots because, if it is too early to plant them out, they may become pot-bound – re-plant them in larger pots. Also, plants that have been raised indoors should be acclimatised by putting them outside during warmer days and bringing them in at night.

Check daily and when a small white sprout appears, plant the seed about half to an inch deep in potting compost. • Plant asparagus crowns by the end of the month. • Sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot (if the soil is cold and wet), cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves and salad leaves. • Don’t forget to regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear, as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture. • Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes are kept watered, as any fruit planted in the last 18 months is susceptible to drought damage. Adding mulch around the base will help. • Sow maincrop peas and make the last sowing of summer broad beans. • Put up pea sticks and build cane supports ready for climbing beans while the ground is still soft. The Council is now appealing for people to join in, through volunteering, pledging to recycle, and helping others to recycle and waste less. Community Sorted Volunteers can get involved with a number of different community activities including taking part in local recycling events, talking to local groups about recycling and distributing Getting It Sorted flyers and posters. All Fenland community groups can get involved too. Recycling Volunteers can spread the recycling message to friends and neighbours, helping to improve the quality of recycling along their street. They hand out ‘thank you’ leaflets to those who are recycling well and offer recycling advice to those needing more support.

IT’S TIME TO GET SORTED A new project to encourage more recycling in Fenland and empower people to make a difference to their community and the environment has been officially launched. Fenland District Council has launched the Getting It Sorted Volunteers to improve recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste which ends up in landfill. Based on the authority’s hugely successful Street Pride initiative, which sees hundreds of volunteers help keep Fenland clean, green and tidy, Getting It Sorted hopes to raise awareness of the benefits of recycling with support from local community groups and schools and a band of dedicated recycling champions. More than 30 people have already signed up to the project, which was officially launched during as recent assembly at Cromwell Community College in Chatteris. Further school visits are planned, and a districtwide schools competition has also been launched to help promote recycling among young people. Project leader Amy Robinson, the Council’s Environmental Projects Officer, said: “We throw things away every day, but where we put our rubbish and where it ultimately ends up makes a big difference to our environment. Whether it’s a plastic bottle, a tin can or a newspaper, by putting the right stuff in the right bin we can all play a part in recycling more.” “In Fenland, residents are recycling around 30 per cent of their waste in their blue bins, but sadly up to £80,000 worth of readily recyclable material is still thrown away in the green bins every year – money that’s going straight to landfill rather than back into helping provide local services.”

The school competition, called Justin’s Recycling Adventure, encourages pupils to complete a recycling storyboard or make up their own. The competition runs until the end of June, with the best entry winning an art set for themselves and a free one-year recycling service for their school, worth £660. Interior Design Reality Check - by Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin Interior design is an over-used phrase which is often misunderstood. Home renovation television programmes focus on the scene 'before' and the big reveal afterwards. They pay little regard to decisions made in the interim. Interior design is about making the right choices, a process that is time-consuming. In an edited half-hour, it's impossible to show the breadth and depth of the business, but over the years the public begins to believe that magical results can be achieved with virtually no budget. Three things to bear in mind when watching these shows: 1 Retailers often donate their items – you need to question whether their goods appear in the final budget tally 2

Trades people, and the crew, work hard. From removing and demolishing to repairing and assembling. From preparing and painting to styling, their time is not accounted for

3 Someone has to make all the decisions beforehand, the interior designer, and there is never a price put on this. I'll tell you a few secrets about designing interiors for a living. It’s April. I’m no fool. But as a mature student at Design School I had no knowledge when I entered of what interior designers were paid. The calling was so strong it didn't matter at the time, but I assumed it would be good. It was shocking to learn about the rock bottom wages prevalent in the industry. It's one of those professions that people go into because they love it and it seems to me that employers take advantage. There are two ways to earn: one is to join a firm and work your way up, the other is to go solo and set up your own business. I did the latter and at no time have I regretted it. However, looking back, it would have helped to discuss my career aspirations with

a professional designer. I would have entered the profession with a more rounded view. Changing careers? How will the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) affect me? – by Janet Lane

Companies and people who are responsible for handling other people’s data are increasingly aware of the upcoming change in data protection regulations with the introduction of the GDPR. Many have heard scare stories about potential fines and penalties in the millions, but what they are not quite sure about is how this change will affect them.

• Privacy policies have to be in plain English, as short as possible, and will need to lay out the subject’s rights, why the data is being collected and how long it will be held for. A firm will need to have a reason for collecting and holding data, being transparent about the data they hold will not be sufficient.

The first thing that you should be aware of is that the GDPR has been law since May 25th, 2016, but enforcement doesn’t begin until May 25th, 2018. You should also be aware that the large fines are real, breaching the GDPR can bring fines up to £17,600,000 or four percent of global turnover, whichever is higher.

• If a data breach occurs, controllers will be required to report this to the supervisory authority within 72 hours and to notify the Data Subject without undue delay.

What are the main changes? Some of the changes under the GDPR are more significant than others, but the biggest changes are that individuals’ rights and transparency requirements have been significantly expanded. You should be aware of the following, but understand that this is not a complete list, the regulation document is 11 chapters long, spread over 88 pages and is not easily digestible into a short article. • Those whose data is being collected (Data Subjects) must give positive consent, meaning they will have to actively and unambiguously agree to have their data collected and shared rather than assuming consent if they have not specifically asked that their data not be shared. Consent must be as easy to withdraw as to give and Data Controllers must be able to demonstrate that consent has been given. • Data Subjects must also be able to request and receive their data in a ‘structured, commonly used and machine-readable format’ free of charge.

Will Brexit affect the GDPR? Unlikely, the UK Government intends to bring our post-Brexit privacy laws in line with the GDPR and any company that processes the data of EU citizens will still be bound by it even after we leave. Is this very different to the Data Protection Act? Yes and no, many of the areas covered by the GDPR are covered by the DPA but transparency requirements are more stringent and the rights of Data Subjects have been increased. Companies outside the EU who hold data on EU citizens also have to conform to the GDPR. How do I make sure that I am compliant? Companies and individuals processing data must take ‘reasonable steps’ to conform to the GDPR. Any company in breach of the new rules will be treated more leniently if they have shown that they have tried to implement the law. We would recommend that anyone processing other people’s data consult a Solicitor or legal professional to make sure that they are in line with the GDPR leaving sufficient time to be compliant before May 25th.

Managing Your Finances Jointly or Separately? by Eamonn Dorling

There are several aspects to consider in new and established relationships. Jointly owned assets tend to be regarded as being owned equally, but this might not be the best way when circumstances change. It can be very helpful to have one person responsible for payment of bills for a couple or family for example. A typical situation with a new relationship for both to contribute to a joint account, then the joint account is used to settle all the bills. Sometimes the contribution proportions are equal and sometimes they will not be. Openness and acknowledgement of contributions to the relationship that are not simply financial are important matters to discuss and review. Sometimes joint ownership of assets can reduce access to certain benefits, not just young family issues where income is tight, but in later life when financial help for care or for other vulnerable people it might be important to have separate assets. The use of trusts can also come in to play. If one person has a poor credit history, this can affect the credit rating of another getting advice can help both parties. Another approach is the Mine, Yours and Ours – this way some finance is on a joint basis and other finance is kept independent and private. This might involve using legal advice if one individual is bringing greater wealth or other assets to the relationship, so that in the event of a division later the proportions are maintained – or not as the case might be. There is seldom a ‘One Size Fits All’ solution, but if the matter is discussed openly everyone can

benefit from well manged financial control. Often the person with least experience learns from the other and vice versa. Sometimes both parties need some help, and that is where Cash Flow management comes in to play. A qualified Independent Financial Adviser will help set you up with a plan that is manageable and efficient. Important tip: Make sure each person is adequately covered in the event of sickness, accident or worse leaving the survivor with all the finances to sort out – particularly if there are children or any financial dependants. Printers and Connectivity This month we have had quite a few queries where customers’ printers have lost ‘connection’ to the computer and they wonder what they should do. This has usually been caused by a ‘bug’ in a Windows update which has changed some of the settings of the computer. Printers usually connect in one of two ways – direct connection with a cable to the computer, or by wireless connection. However, whatever method of connection is used the computer will require some special software called ‘drivers’ which will convert the information from the computer into a form the printer will understand to allow it to print. The first thing to check is that you have the latest/ correct driver for your printer installed on your computer. If you have Windows 10 installed this operating system will usually identify what printer you have and install the correct driver, but assuming you don’t have windows 10 or that your printer for whatever reason is not recognised, all you need to do is ‘Google’ the make and model of your printer and driver, i.e. ‘Set-up and driver for my Epson XP245’ and you will be presented with a list of suggestions. I recommend you choose the manufacturer’s website and then download the suggested program which will usually then be in your ‘downloads folder’. Run the program by doubleclicking on the file you have downloaded and you will then be taken through a number of different steps at the end of which your printer will then be connected to your computer. All modern printers/copiers/scanners now have ‘wireless connectivity’ and I suggest you choose this option when setting up the printer. Once the printer and router are ‘talking’ to each other your computer (whether it is connected wirelessly or by direct LAN cable connection) will then ‘see’ the printer and can connect for you to use. The wireless method will also mean anybody you give

permission to use your home broadband will be able to use the printer. If, however, you have just lost the connection to a printer that was connecting go to and then choose ‘devices’ and then choose ‘printers’ and finally click on ‘find a printer’. The computer will then show all the printers it can see and you then just click on the name of your printer, choose ‘set as default’, then ‘print a test page’, and all being well it will print a page. If your printer loses connection, e.g. when you click on ‘find a printer’ it doesn’t find the printer, look on the front of your printer and you should have the option to do different tasks. Usually, as part of the maintenance function, there will be a ‘wireless configuration option/wizard’. Just choose that option and enter the wireless password on the back of your home broadband router, then the printer should connect and will then be found when you search for the printer in settings. Finally, don’t buy the cheapest printer. Always check the price of buying fresh ink as the cost can massively increase the cost of your printer in the long term. Don’t be cautious of buying ink that is ‘non-genuine’. I have never seen nor heard of a printer being damaged by using ‘non-genuine’ ink, and the price difference can be substantial. Finally, we have just bought a substantial stock of Epson printers, ranging from small home printers through to large A3 office printers, so please consider us if thinking of changing your printer. New Season, New Start! – by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

Spring is a time of great change and here at Whittlesey Vets, it is no different. We have now moved into our shiny new practice on Briggate East and are busy settling in.

We have moved everything from the old premises and we are at present running around looking for this, hunting for that, opening all of the cupboards to find things as, of course, nothing is in the same place that it has been for the past 3+ years, as well as losing each other in the huge building. We moved from one building to the next in a matter of days and we couldn't believe how much 'stuff' we had accumulated. We must have been incredibly organised to get so much stuff in such a small property, as we have filled most of our new cupboards already. Along with our change of address, there are also changes afoot outside in our beautiful countryside – here at the new practice we are fortunate enough to be on the side of the canal that runs through the town. Those of us that bring our dogs to work, can easily nip outside at break time to take them for a walk by the water. Hopefully, we are now starting to see the back of the icy weather and are moving towards the warmer weather, longer days, flowers in the

garden, birds nesting and hedgehogs coming out of hibernation – all of the things we look forward to during the winter. As well as the nice things that start coming back to life, unfortunately other things also start becoming more prevalent. Examples of the 'other' things, are fleas, ticks and flies and it is from now onwards, as the temperature rises, that we see more of these. Your pets can be protected from these critters by regular applications of spot-ons, or being given a tablet. There are several combinations of products available depending upon your pet’s species and tolerances. If you would like to discuss treatments for fleas, ticks, worms and flies, please call the surgery and have a chat to one of the receptionists who will advise you. If and when you need to bring your pet to the surgery, please don’t forget that we have moved into our new premises on Briggate East – we look forward to seeing you there.

Matters COME AND JOIN THE BAND

Whittlesey Concert Band is enjoying a surge in popularity with membership growing to its largest size for more than a year. The band was formed in the summer of 2013, originally called Whittlesey Wind Ensemble, but changed its name in January this year. Its members include musicians from a wide area including Holme, March, King’s Lynn, Ely, Stamford, Spalding, Peterborough, Holme and, of course, Whittlesey. A flurry of new players has seen the band blossom and working on a number of new and exciting pieces from a range of musical genres under the skilful eye of conductor Kevin Mackie. If you would like to see the band it is planning a concert at the Ivy Leaf, Whittlesey, on the afternoon of Sunday, May 27th, followed by performances in Wisbech on Armed Forces Day on June 24th and on July 1st in Ramsey on the village green.

LADYSMITH WI PLANS NEW OUTING The recent cold weather has prompted Ladysmith W.I to plan a Christmas outing this year in addition to its summer outing in July. The group all enjoy learning something new and one of its favourite tutors is member Jill Dunn, who is accomplished in a variety of craft skills. In April she will be demonstrating ‘Decorative Lettering’. The monthly competition for this meeting will be our efforts on the night! If the lighter evenings tempt you to get out and try something new, the group says you are welcome to come and join it on Tuesday, April 10th at 7.30pm in St. Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane. Don't Panic! PART ONE - by Dave Bailey

This month we look at contingencies â&#x20AC;Ś Performing can be great, but sometimes oh so stressful. If youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just rocking up to play at an open mic or as a support act often the logistics and hardware for an event are usually the responsibility of either the venue or the host performer. However, when you are the person providing the kit and hosting the session or the band member who sets up the PA and lights, always expect the unexpected. Anecdotal tales of disasters can only bring shivers to the hosting newbie, but it is necessary to have a fool-proof plan for recovering from most issues that you will encounter through the years. Venues have a habit of throwing up many obstacles, usually power or acoustics related. Over the years finding on arrival that the location at a pub is either miles from where you can park, has no power points where they want you to set up or has a stage so high you need a crane to get the equipment on stage is par for the course (and often no steps either). Followed by a location where customers have to walk between the drummer and the bass player to get to the toilets, or with ridiculously low ceilings or a ceiling so high, it has its own weather system with an echo that removes the possibility of using or needing any effects whatsoever. L shaped halls and bars can also provide unique acoustic issues to try the patience.

When you set up the PA and monitors try different combinations with the cabinet fronts at different angles and heights, this can sometimes overcome reflected echo, reverb and feedback also reducing the volume at different frequencies. Some stages and halls with suspended floors can also create rumble and unwanted bass resonance. A thin acoustic foam wedge under the speaker can alleviate these annoying issues. If the stage is really high, sound will reflect off the ceiling and back wall more readily compared to the pub bar setting as it will not be absorbed by the bodies of the audience but pass over their heads before reflecting off any hard surfaces. Always remember that if an audience member could fall/trip over cables they will. Make sure that mains feed or speaker cables are kept off the floor, as a last resort if you have to cross a walk way then use our old friend Mr Gaffer tape to hold them down and if possible use a threshold dirt collector mat to cover them to soften the profile. History

The Mystery of Eastrea’s Lost Chapel – by Jen Barback, Curator of Whittlesey Museum

In November 1911 a mystery was solved at Eastrea. While digging for the foundations of the new wall, the pick-axe of one of the workmen struck something about two feet below the surface, which turned out to be a large stone block carved as part of a perpendicular window. Forty or fifty dressed stones weighing two or three tonnes in total shortly appeared, showing clear mason’s marks, carving and shaping as if from a 14th or 15th Century church building “of some pretensions”.

t had long been known that Eastrea once had a medieval stone chapel, as most villages do. Old manuscripts show the granting of a papal licence to the village to build a chapel in the year 1403, and an indulgence (sum of money) being awarded to help the construction in 1404 “as the inhabitants had not sufficient means to build one”. The chapel was needed because during winter the land flooded and the high clay island of Eastrea was cut off from the similar island of Whittlesey, meaning that villagers could not safely cross to attend compulsory services. By 1434 building was completed and the licence granted for worshippers to attend services in the new chapel, now dedicated to the Holy Trinity. However, unlike in other villages, the Eastrea chapel had since vanished – leaving only a few dressed stones built into the walls of barns or cottages. Victorian “experts from the British Museum” had looked into the matter in their own books and in local records, and failed to discover the original site or any detail of how or when the substantial building disappeared. In 1911, the now demolished Windmill Inn in the centre of the village needed a new back wall. The wall that was removed was one of the “old clay walls” unique to Whittlesey and Eastrea, but had “fallen into such decay” that it was decided to pull it down completely and build a new brick wall in its place.

The trench in which the stones were discovered was only “a dozen or two yards long”, so it is predicted that many more pieces of similar stone are still under the ground nearby in all directions. Rumour has it that buried and broken gravestones have been discovered in a neighbouring field during ploughing. The layout of the road around three sides of the Windmill Inn site would have suited a chapel with a churchyard or clergy house at the back, and it is now felt that this was certainly the site of the lost chapel. One mystery remains, however – why was the building destroyed? It was suggested that the chapel may have been demolished after being destroyed by fire in 1771, following a disaster in which almost the entire hamlet was reduced to a mass of ruins. However, it seems more likely that for whatever reason it was unmade during the Reformation, or in the difficult period for religious buildings following the Tudor dissolution of the monasteries, after standing for less than two hundred years. School News HEROES V VILLAINS Despite having to reschedule our World Book Day, the day was a complete success at Alderman Jacobs. This year, the school decided to have a theme for the day: Heroes and Villains.

PUPILS DRESS UP AS THEIR FAVOURITE CHARACTERS

As the children and their teachers discussed their favourite books, it created a real ‘battle ground’ of good versus evil in a ‘talk about a book’ showdown. With reading being a focus for the school, it created a real buzz around reading by completing a variety of activities.

New Road Primary School celebrated World Book Day in style this year. Everyone dressed up as their favourite character from a book and also took part in an exciting week- long Read-a-thon.

Year groups across the school took part in a ‘Read Aloud’ activity, whereby the children took turns to read their books, modelling fluency and expression. Other year groups took part in various creative activities linked to the themes and conventions found in many inspiring, classic books.

The school was full of excitement, determination and enthusiasm and lots of the children were heard saying “Can I just finish this page?”.

Year 4 children, based their learning on ‘dreaming big’ linked to the BFG (Roald Dahl) book by creating their own dream jar, focusing on their aspirations for the future. While year 3 children, took a cross-curricular approach by combining their art skills to portray the character of Fantastic Mr Fox by having fun making realistic masks.

All of the children were challenged to read as many books in a week as possible.

The Read-a-thon was sponsored and will be used to buy lots of high quality books for the children to read and enjoy. New Road Primary School would like to thank all of the children, parents and sponsors for supporting us in the event.

PLUCKY PUPILS CONQUER CAYTHORPE Primary school pupils from Whittlesey have just returned from visiting Caythorpe Court, spending the week team building and pushing themselves beyond their comfort zone to achieve some tough physical challenges. The plucky Year 5 pupils from Park Lane Primary & Nursery School challenged themselves with a variety of activities, including the high ropes, climbing wall, vertical challenge and kayaking. Team work and trust were essential to the achievement of several activities and the children pushed themselves to their limit. Sarah Gregory, Year 5 teacher at Park Lane said: “It is always a real privilege to see the children’s confidence in their own ability grow over the week; as well as being able to celebrate real personal success with both individuals and groups. “Each year we offer outstanding opportunities and experiences to our pupils designed to make their confidence grow. It was a very worthwhile experience for pupils and staff alike.” 64

OPEN DAY TO CELEBRATE NEW FACILITIES New Road Preschool recently moved to fabulous new premises and was due to hold an official open afternoon to celebrate the great new facilities. The open afternoon was set for Wednesday March 28th,12.30-2.30pm at New Road Preschool and all parents of current children at New Road Preschool and prospective parents wanting to look round were welcome to attend. WHEN IT FEELS GOOD TO HURT Self-harm is a very common behaviour in young people and affects around one in 12, with 10 percent of 15-16-year-olds believed to be self-harming. There are lots of reasons why young people selfharm. It can happen if they are feeling anxious, depressed, stressed or bullied and feel they don’t have any other way of dealing with these issues. It is often used as a coping mechanism. The physical pain of self-harm might feel easier to deal with than the emotional pain that's behind it. Sometimes it can also be a way for them to punish themselves for something they've done or have been accused of doing. It can also make a young person feel they're in control of at least one part of their life. It’s not always a really big thing that leads to self-harm and the young person may not even be sure why it started.

Self-harm can take lots of physical forms, including cutting, burning, bruising, scratching, hair-pulling, poisoning and overdosing. When a young person self-harms, chemicals are released into the brain which can become addictive very quickly. They may feel an instant relief of pressure and ‘bad feelings’, but this relief is short lived and once they start, it can become a compulsion. If you discover your child is self-harming, it's very important that you stay calm and let them know that you're there to help and support them. If they want to talk about their self-harm and why they're doing it, sit down and listen. If they're finding it hard to speak to you, they might feel more able to talk to a counsellor. Self-harm is difficult to talk about, but it’s a common problem and help is available. ow on earth are we already four months into 2018? How have our New Year’s resolutions gone then? Still keeping up with them? Well, my nutribullet has gone away until January 2019 and I have approximately 79p in my bank account – so my 2018 saving and dieting is going... smashing. That was an incredibly cynical start to April’s article – I apologise. It’s April! The daffodils and sun are finally bursting their way back through for the first time in what seems like forever, it’s Easter and all the children are excited – who am I kidding? I’m nearly 18 and even I’m excited. Easter is all about re-birth and well, here we are still in the early stages of 2018 and I guess every year we all get reborn in a way. We get given the chance to forget about the year just gone and start afresh. Now that it’s coming into spring; baby birds are out, the buds are blooming, the world is now alive again and rich in colour after what can sometimes seem like a grey season – winter. Speaking of winter – the beast from the east! (I know this seems like a while ago now, but the reference to it will become clear later on in this article). We all mocked and jeered on that first day where nobody round our way got any snow and it was ‘typical’ of England. We were all so wrong. So very wrong. As you’re reading this, remembering shaking the snow out of all your nooks and crannies, shivering and shaking at any cold breeze – I hope the thought of Easter makes you a bit warmer as the kids come out looking for chocolate eggs and you’re stuffing your face with the ones the bunny left ‘just for you’.

Easter is a very special time for me, I have very fond memories of it as a child. And I guess I never really realised why. When you’re in school the story of Easter is very much hammered into you and I think, despite how important the story is, we take it for granted. Now whatever your thoughts on Easter itself, I’m sure you can appreciate that, much like any holiday, it is precious for families. As I said earlier I am nearly 18 years old, however the memories of Easter as a child still mean so much to me; running around frantically trying to find the little eggs in the garden, being terrified of the Easter bunny (I was a strange child, deal with it), having chocolate eggs you didn’t quite get through on the countertop for months. One of my favourite Easter memories is from 2007. I had my first sleepover staying at somebody else's house and I was petrified. We watched Coraline, which was the equivalent of The Grudge to seven-year-old me, and then we slept. Well, everybody else did. Me? I got my Mum to pick me up at 3am. I was so upset that I wimped out and came home... until I woke up to a snowy Easter Sunday morning, once I’d recovered from a possible sugar overdose. Easter is a magical time for children and at that point in time, it became all the more special for me. This may have been due to a tonne of chocolate and snow, but nevertheless, Easter is a special time. Regardless of your beliefs or reasonings, just take it as time to be with your family and feel the magic that you once did as a child. ‘You are made of stardust, wishes and magical things...you just have to believe.’

THRILL-SEEKERS COMING TO CONQUER PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL Nerves of steel will be required on Friday May 18th and Saturday May 19th, as risk-takers take part in a 150-foot abseil down the front of Peterborough Cathedral. The event is being held to raise money for both the cathedral and the Peterborough-based charity, ‘Shine’, which provides specialist support for people affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus – complex conditions affecting movement, learning and health.

SING FOR LIFE 2018: FORTY WOMEN WANTED!

The abseil itself will not be for the faint-hearted. Having ascended the ancient spiral staircase within the great North West Tower and taken in breathtaking views across the city, participants will clip in and descend the 150-foot vertical drop, cheered on by friends, family and colleagues below. Derby Mountain Rescue will be on hand to safely guide the proceedings.

Launching in May, the project will take forty local women with a range of previous singing experience, (including none), to rehearse over ten weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset Theatre on Saturday July 21st. Over the years, the project has introduced hundreds of local women to the joys of singing while raising many thousands of pounds for charity.

Registration will cost £50, (plus a booking fee), and entrants are encouraged to raise a minimum of £250 to support the two worthy causes – prizes will be awarded to the top fundraisers. The Danger of Anger Certain issues have been linked to unmanaged anger; headaches, digestive problems, insomnia, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, heart attack, to name a few. My parents brought up eight children, five boys and three girls in a three-bed terrace house with no electricity upstairs and no central heating. The only income coming into the house was my father’s salary as a fireman, money was in extremely short supply. Being the youngest of the boys, every item of clothing I wore until I was 15 had been handed down. I was passionate about sport, and excelled in the javelin and swimming, always coming first in these events during the yearly area schools sport challenges. But opportunities to pursue a career in sport did not exist for me. On leaving school at 15, I became an apprentice refrigeration engineer, my salary of £2.50 for an

indefinite hour week was required to help with the family budget. I received back just 32 pence. I had many reasons to become angry, but, as arguing in the home was strictly forbidden, I found ways of venting that anger outside the home. Both my parents had become committed Christians, so there was no shortage of love in our home (prior to this my father had wasted his salary on drink and gambling). Until the day my parents died I had never heard them raise their voice in anger either to the children or themselves, we could, and did disagree, but without raised voices. While life in our home was tough, I grew to appreciate the influence of my parents on how to face life’s challenges without them eating you up with anger. Life is too short, and God certainly does not want anyone to live their life burning up with anger. Come and talk to us in strict confidence.
