MAY 2018

Introduction

Welcome to Your May Issue. Inside Highlights

It has already amazed me what a vibrant town Whittlesey is.

5..................Star Barber Shop

In just a few weeks in the Editor’s chair, I’ve been impressed with the number and variety of organisations that are active in the community, either by helping to raise the awareness of worthy local and national causes or simply by getting together to enjoy each other’s company and have some fun in the process.

6..................Mayor's Duck Race

10................Whittlesey Osteopaths 12................March Podiatry

In the field of commerce too, the local town has given rise to new businesses while the established ones continue to work hard to prosper.

14................Royal Wedding Quiz

18................Recipe: Syn-Free Campfire Stew

I’ve already spoken with a number of entrepreneurs who have started new ventures in the town and surrounding area. It just goes to show what a positive mindset can do. There are always opportunities out there for those willing to take the initiative and not be cowered by the doom mongers. Whittlesey – and the Fens – is a great place, so let’s be proud and shout about it…

34...............Legal Advice from Fraser Dawbarns 36...............History with Whittlesey Museum

This time of the year sees an upturn in open air events when families are encouraged to get outside after all the months of gloom.

38...............Holly Jean

40-41.......Community Matters

This month sees the welcome return of the Fenland BusFest which is being held in Whittlesey on Sunday, May 20th and will once again feature a fantastic collection of vehicles from all over the UK with the event being held in tandem with the equally popular Fenland Classic Car Show at nearby Ramsey.

44...............Scouts Charity Race Night

51................Finance with Eamonn Dorling

Hopefully the weather will be kind on the day and will see men, women and children gather together to have some fun in the sun.

56...............Club Matters

If you are planning any events over the coming months and would like them to be featured in Discovering Whittlesea, then please get in touch. Our contact details are below so don’t be slow to let us know…

There’s a New Star in Whittlesey... Star Barber Shop has made a bright start in Whittlesey since opening its doors just two months ago. The Broad Street business offers a wide selection of hair styles to suit all tastes and age groups, from children to pensioners. Open seven days a week, the cutting-edge business can deliver a wide range of styles, from traditional through to skin fade, patterns/designs and threading, as well as offering wet shaves and beard trimming. Star Barber Shop is run by a Peterborough-based manager who hails from a family steeped in the business with four of his brothers, also barbers. He said: “I’ve been doing this full-time for the past 11 years and really enjoy it. We have had a fantastic response to opening in Whittlesey and have already attracted a number of repeat customers. “The location is really good, and we had a fantastic response to the flyer that we sent out

through Discovering Whittlesea. I reckon around 70 percent of the people that have come in here have mentioned the flyer.” The salon boasts three chairs and has a growing team of stylists. He said: “I think the fact that we are open seven days a week gives people the flexibility to choose when they want to come in. We have had a very positive response not just from the people in Whittlesey but also from places further afield, such as Ramsey and the surrounding villages.” Star Barber Shop is located at 29 Broad Street, Whittlesey. Opening times are: Monday-Saturday 9am-6.30pm; Sunday: 10am-4pm. Tel: 07715 822016

A Quacking Day Out at Mayor’s Charity Duck Race More than 1000 plastic ducks took part in Whittlesey Mayor Ralph Butcher’s charity duck Bobathon at The Bower, Whittlesey. The wet morning weather failed to dampen the spirits of the crowds who assembled on Briggate Bridge to cheer on the duck armada. As with previous years, with the river being locked at both ends, there was little movement for the plastic feathered fellows and the Whittlesey fire engine was again called into action to assist with a deluge of well-aimed jets to propel them towards the waiting boats at the finish line. With the ducks under marshal Robert Windle’s orders, the race started at 2.05pm after they were released from the bridge starting bags. The race was won by number 458, owned by Alan Hobbs, who paddled home in 13 minutes and 23 seconds, and was closely followed just four lengths behind by number 152 in second place, owned by the Ayto family syndicate, with number 813 owned by Grace Randall, finishing third. Course referee Sue Piergianni was on hand to record finishers and adjudicate at the finish line ensuring no fowl play! Mayor Butcher thanked the supporters, course officials, owners and fire brigade for their continued support. The duck rescue squad sprang (paddled) into action after the finish to recover any little fellows who did not complete the course... 6

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better

Osteoporosis: What You Can Do to Keep it at Bay Osteoporosis is a disorder that reduces our bone density and strength. It rarely presents us with symptoms, however it makes us prone to fractures in the event of a trauma, e.g. a fall. To appreciate how we can help ourselves combat this disorder, we must first appreciate why/how it occurs. We humans get everywhere and do many different things in our lifetime. Therefore, our bodies must continually adapt to our ever-changing tasks. Our bone tissue does this by continually breaking down and rebuilding our bones. At any one time we can be knocking down and rebuilding up to 10 percent of our bones! There are two types of cells involved in this process, osteoblasts and osteoclasts. The osteoclasts break down bone whilst the osteoblasts rebuild it. When we have osteoporosis, there is an imbalance. Either the osteoblasts are lagging behind or the osteoclasts are working too hard. The net result is loss of bone density. The osteoblasts/clasts respond to various signals for clues on how hard to work. These signals come from a number of sources which are: 1 The forces passing through our bodies when we perform a physical activity 2

Various circulating hormones, particularly those from the adrenal (oestrogen/testosterone), thyroid (calcitonin) and the parathyroid (parathyroid hormone) glands

3 Foreign substances such as alcohol and some medications (steroids being the most notable). As we are designed to be more physical when we are younger, the quantity of oestrogen/

Healthy bone

Osteoporotic bone

testosterone falls as we age. Unfortunately, the drop in oestrogen after menopause is significantly greater than the testosterone drop in males. Thus, osteoporosis is commonly a female disorder. The osteoblasts will obviously need the right raw materials to make the new bone. As bone tissue is made from protein fibres encased in calcium/ phosphate crystals we need to be consuming and absorbing a range of amino acids, calcium and salts. Now we have the basic understanding of osteoporosis we can work out how to help our bodies maintain our bones. Performing regular load bearing activity or exercise sends positive signals to our bones, whilst minimising alcohol consumption reduces negative signals. Eating a balanced diet rich in vegetables, dairy products, pulse/beans, meats and fish gives osteoblasts the material they need to create new bone. Should we have any medical problems with our adrenal, thyroid and parathyroid glands or our kidneys and digestive systems these need to be investigated and treated accordingly.

Slow Cooker Method

18

Soak the gammon joint overnight in cold water if necessary. Reserve half of the sliced peppers, and add all the rest of the ingredients to the slow cooker, then stir well and switch on. Set slow cooker to high setting and cook for 6-8 hours on high (you can leave it on longer if you like). 30 minutes before the end of cooking stir in the reserved peppers. After 6 hours, check consistency of sauce and tenderness of meat. The meat should be starting to fall apart and sauce thickening. You can remove the lid and cook on high to finish the meat and thicken the sauce if necessary. The meat should have broken up, but if not shred it in the slow cooker with two forks and mix well before serving.

Your Garden

may gardening tips Spring so far has seen a variety of weather, from warm sunny days to late snow, cold winds and frost. Let’s hope that May brings us sunshine and warm days: don’t get too complacent though, as May has a habit of throwing a variety of adverse weather conditions at the gardener, and you may have to protect young seedlings from the possibility of a late frost, or make sure they are well watered if we don’t have the rain. Also, hold back on planting out seeds at the beginning of the month, as sometimes they are planted too early: the ground may be too wet or cold and they fail to germinate. Whatever the weather, it does seem to favour the weeds!! So make sure these are kept in check as they take precious nutrients away from young plants and seedlings. When watering young plants and seedlings, it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly as this gets down to the roots. If you water lightly, it may only wet the surface of the soil and the roots may be encouraged to stay near the surface, where they are more likely to suffer from drought damage. Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous for me to list, but a few include: carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. Succession sowing ensures that you have a continual supply and not a glut of the same crop, and is particularly good for salad crops which you need to cut and use immediately. Any seeds that were sown earlier will need thinning out: doing this when they are quite small lessens the disturbance to the surrounding plants.

Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages and, towards the end of the month when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors. Some of us only set aside a small plot for growing fruit and vegetables, so to maximise your space you can try: • Intercropping – sowing two crops in the same row, one slow and one fast growing. Fast growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts. You can also sow the fast growers when there is a gap between harvesting one crop and planting another. • Catch cropping – sowing a fast growing crop in the brief period a plot might be empty. Other jobs to do this month include: • Earth up potatoes. • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage. • Harden off and plant out vegetables sown earlier. • Pot on growing plants. • Put up bean and pea supports. • Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year. Let’s hope for some good weather for growing and planting – enjoy!

The event always starts off with a spectacular parade through the streets and crowds are encouraged to line the streets to cheer the participants on before the official opening of the Festival on the Market Square by the Mayor of Whittlesey.

PLANS UNDERWAY FOR THIS YEAR’S WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL Plans for this year’s Whittlesey Festival are well under way, with the big day set for Sunday, September 9th. Being held from 10am-4pm, it promises to be another event to remember. Now celebrating its 11th year, the festival has grown year-on-year with thousands of visitors flocking to the area on the day. A number of headline acts have already been confirmed who will be performing on the Market Square on the day including The Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers (Marching Band), Peterborough Highland Band and back by popular demand – The Pearly King and Queen with their band Cockney Pride all the way from London. This is just a taster of what’s in store; there will be various musicians, singers, choirs, dancers, puppets, entertainers and displays from local groups performing throughout the day both on the Market Square and in St Mary’s Church and the Marquee on the Church Yard Green. There will also be the popular schools’ art exhibition at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street with arts and crafts on show by children and students from all the local schools. Another popular feature is the vintage vehicle display where there will be more than one hundred cars and bikes lining Market Street and Broad Street for you to admire at your leisure.

The festival committee always welcomes new ideas for the event so if you or your group would like more information about how you can get involved please contact Brian Smithyman on 01733 752093 or email brains@whittlesey.cc or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON STATION PROPOSALS Residents are being asked to have their say on the proposed improvements to Whittlesey railway station. Fenland District Council (FDC) has launched a public consultation on behalf of the Hereward Community Rail Partnership (HCRP) to give people a chance to share their views on various options to lengthen the platforms and provide a footbridge between the two platforms at Whittlesey. The improvements would enable the stations to accommodate longer trains with more carriages, boosting passenger numbers. Consultation drop-in events were held in April at the Railway Station, Whittlesey Market Place and Whittlesey Town Council offices. And residents can have their say by filling in an online survey at: www.fenland.gov.uk/consultations Paper copies of the survey are also available on request via email at: neighbourhoodstrategy@ fenland.gov.uk or by telephone on: 01354 622318. The deadline for comments is 5pm on Wednesday, May 30th.

It truly is a day out for all the family with something for everyone with stalls, rides and attractions. Bookings for stalls are going fast so if you haven’t reserved yours yet please contact Fenland District Council by emailing marketsandevents@fenland. gov.uk or telephone 01354 654321 to secure your space. 22

GET BACK TO NATURE On the fringe of Whittlesey, Lattersey nature reserve is a little gem of peace and tranquillity. First opened to the public in 1987, Lattersey’s peaceful setting of reed beds teeming with birds, orchid-dotted old meadow, woodlands and wetlands, is a haven for nature and people. COUNCILLOR SURGERIES WILL BE HELD IN GROSVENOR HOUSE FROM 9.30AM TO 10.30AM ON THE FIRST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH THROUGHOUT 2018. Councillors present on Saturday May 5th will be: Councillor Kay Mayor (District and Town Councillor) Councillor Bob Wicks (Town Councillor) If you have any matters of concern and wish to discuss them with a Councillor, then please come along and let us know.

Over the years, the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire who manage the site, have made improvements to help wildlife to thrive, and have much improved access with boardwalks and paths, based on the needs and wishes of the local community. Last year the trust and local residents celebrated Lattersey’s 30th birthday, and due to the popularity of the event, this year on Saturday, May 5th, the Wildlife Trust is holding an open day from 11am-3pm. There will be a guided walk (11.30am), treasure hunt, pond dipping, sweep netting, birdwatching, games, crafts and displays. This month, regular puzzlers will notice a change in their monthly challenge. As I’m sure all avid film fans will already know, 2018 marks the centenary of the silent movie, Cupid Angling, becoming ‘The First Photoplay made in Natural Colors’, according to the 1918 advertisement in the San Francisco Chronicle. This month, your task is to identify the following famous movie quotes – (no prize... just that inner glow you feel when you get them all/most/or at least a few of them right!) 1) "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse." 2) "He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy!" 3) “Houston, we have a problem.” 4) "May the Force be with you."

5) "Here's another nice mess you've gotten me into!" 6) "A boy's best friend is his mother." 7) "Just keep swimming." 8) "You talkin' to me?"

9) "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!” 10) “To infinity and beyond!"

11) "They call me Mister Tibbs."

12) "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers." 13) "The name’s Bond. James Bond." 14) "I'll be back."

15) "You're gonna need a bigger boat."

16) "I'm also just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her." 17) "Go ahead, make my day."

18) "Life is a box of chocolates, Forrest. You never know what you're gonna get." 19) "Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me. Aren't you?" 20) "Here's Johnny!"

ANSWERS: 1) Don Corleone (Marlon Brando), ‘The Godfather’ (1972). 2) Brian's mother (Terry Jones), ‘Life of Brian’ (1979). 3) Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), ‘Apollo 13’ (1995). 4) Han Solo (Harrison Ford), ‘Star Wars’ (1977). 5) Ollie (Oliver Hardy), ‘Sons of the Desert’ (1933). 6) Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), ‘Psycho’ (1960). 7) Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), ‘Finding Nemo’ (2003). 8) Travis Bickle (Robert de Niro), ‘Taxi Driver’ (1976). 9) Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), ‘Gone with the Wind’ (1939). 10) Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), ‘Toy Story’ (1995). 11) Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier), ‘In the Heat of the Night’ (1967). 12) Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh) ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ (1951). 13) James Bond (Sean Connery), ‘Dr No’ (1962). 14) The Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger), ‘The Terminator’ (1984). 15) Brody (Roy Scheider), ‘Jaws’ (1975). 16) Anna Scott (Julia Roberts), ‘Notting Hill’ (1999). 17) Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood), ‘Sudden Impact’ (1983). 18) Mrs. Gump (Sally Field), ‘Forrest Gump’ (1994). 19) Ben Braddock (Dustin Hoffman), ‘The Graduate’ (1967). 20) Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), ‘The Shining’ (1980).

Home Interiors

Did you know... Wallpaper has a Murderous Past? – by Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin

Here are five surprising facts about wallpaper: 1

In 1710, wallpaper tax entered the statute books. Queen Anne was on the throne then. She was famous for being transported everywhere in a Sedan chair as walking proved difficult due to her corpulence and painful gout. The purchase tax was levied at one penny a square yard on printed and patterned wallpaper. Evasion of the tax was punishable by death. Queen Anne died in 1714, but the tax lived on through the reigns of George I, George II, George III and George IV.

2 German-born Carl Wilhelm Scheele invented a vivid green colour in his laboratory in 1775; it became quite the rage for decorating. 3

Mechanisation of the manufacturing process enabled wallpaper to be produced on a roll and towards the end of the 18th century households at all levels of society could afford to decorate with colourful wallpapers.

4

Due to the instability of the chemical compounds used in the creation of Scheele’s green, and in the fixing of dyes generally, arsenical gas was emitted when wallpaper got damp. Debate about arsenic and its potential to harm began to surface in the 1800s, but since it was used in everything from boiled sweets to dress fabrics, it took many years before its harmful nature could be accepted and then proven.

5

Wallpaper was responsible for widespread illness and many deaths. A Cambridgeshire farmer decorated a few rooms for his family. When they all began to feel unwell he removed every scrap of it without delay. His family enjoyed a miraculous recovery, but the torn and sweating remnants in the yard proved too tempting to the farm animals who ate them and died.

Thankfully today we can enjoy the patterns of the past in the knowledge that wallpaper is perfectly safe to install in our homes. Photo credits: Cole & Son: Palm jungle wallpaper via Houseology and Royal Garden wallpaper via Historic Royal Palaces

News

MAY NEWS & UPDATES - By Steve Barclay MP

I

am pleased to be able to update Whittlesey residents that King’s Dyke is now ready for the next step. The current flood closures of the B1040 north of Whittlesey and of North Bank Road once again highlight the importance of progressing King’s Dyke crossing, which I continue to raise with Cambridgeshire County Council who have overall responsibility for the scheme. The next step involves drilling test bore holes on the A605 and a traffic order is in place, covering the next few weeks, so that this work can start as soon as the flooding has eased on the alternative access routes to Peterborough. Vegetation has also been cut back ahead of the bird-nesting season and the report from the contractors on the design and build of the bridge is due in the next few months. Like many residents, I am frustrated at the length of time this is taking and I am surprised that some of the design work could not have been started sooner. However, I am pleased that the scheme continues to move forward and will continue to emphasise its importance to both Whittlesey and North Cambridgeshire as a whole. Now that the Easter holidays are over, preparations are underway for my summer ‘Read to Succeed campaign.’ I first launched the campaign in 2016, after teachers raised

the difficulty of encouraging children to read throughout the summer holidays which caused their literacy skills to suffer a dip after the school break. The initiative, supported by the Bishop of Ely, teachers, businesses and community groups, ensures that every Year 4 and 5 child in North East Cambridgeshire can have a new book to take home and keep before the holidays. This year group being chosen because it is the age at which children often begin to read more independently. How did last year’s Read to Succeed Campaign add up? • Thanks to local support, we raised enough money to buy over 2500 new books • That means, that every single Year 4 and 5 child in North East Cambridgeshire received a new book to read during the summer holidays • As a result, local libraries recorded an increase in children participating in the Summer Reading Challenge I am hoping to continue the success of last year’s campaign and increase the amount of books donated this summer. I will be providing regular updates on the Read to Succeed Campaign via local press and social media.

Legal

Do we really have a no-fault divorce system? – by Rebecca Woodley

In the UK we supposedly have a no-fault divorce system. This means our system does not blame either party for the breakdown of the marriage. Realistically, in many cases neither party is entirely responsible for the breakdown and blaming one side can damage the relationship between the parties even further. Rebecca Woodley of Fraser Dawbarns discusses how, in many cases, apportioning blame does not actually help either party, the children or the court when dealing with a marriage breakdown. Many people applying for a divorce have not yet been separated for two years, so I inform clients that the only way they can proceed with a divorce before two years’ separation is to base the divorce on the other person’s adultery or unreasonable behaviour. Legally, the only grounds for divorce is the irretrievable breakdown of a marriage, but this has to be referenced to one of five facts: 1 Adultery 2 Unreasonable behaviour 3 Two years’ separation with consent 4 Five years’ separation 5 Desertion Facts 1,2 and 5 are clearly fault-based because for a divorce petition to succeed it must be proven that the other party committed adultery, behaved unreasonably or deserted their spouse. In many cases, clients are trying to deal with the breakdown of their marriage amicably and don’t want to proceed on a basis of blame. Many clients have agreed the arrangements for the children and they have decided on financial arrangements that they just want to finalise. They recognise that if they issue divorce proceedings

based around the other party’s culpability, this could upset the other party, and this could lead to problems in making arrangements for the children or agreeing a financial settlement. Making matters worse, it is also possible to ask the court to order the other party to pay the costs of the divorce. If points 1, 2 or 5 are used as the reason for the divorce, because we are blaming the other party for the breakdown of the marriage, the court will usually make such an order. This means at a time when we are trying to limit the disputed issues between the parties, such an order can actually end up increasing those issues and start arguments over who should divorce who and who should meet the costs. Alternatively, one party can issue divorce proceedings, with a claim for costs, blaming the other party when it is obvious that the issuing party is equally to blame for the breakdown of the marriage. This can lead to the relationship between the parties deteriorating further and they will then struggle to agree other issues relating to the children or financial matters. The family department at Fraser Dawbarns always do their best to reduce any friction that can be caused by our fault-based divorce system. We inform respondents of the law and point out that the use of an adultery or unreasonable behaviour petition is only a means to an end, we are not blaming them for the breakdown of the marriage, this is just the only way to proceed with a divorce at the current time. Unfortunately, our attempts are not always successful. If you would like further advice regarding divorce or any other family matter, please do not hesitate to contact Fraser Dawbarns.

History

VN0 866 - Whittlesey’s Celebrity Bus – by Mike Shearing, Volunteer at Whittlesey Museum

T

his registration number was given to a bus which had Whittlesey connections. The bus concerned was built by the Bristol Commercial Vehicle Co. Ltd, based in Bristol, in 1953. The bus was put into the fleet operated by the Eastern National Omnibus Company, who operated in the South East of England. It remained with Eastern National until it was withdrawn from service in 1970. The full model type of the bus was a KSW5G/ECW, translated as follows:

• KSW – This relates to the chassis configuration. The original K series chassis appeared in 1937, the KSW was shorter and wider at 27ft x8ft • 5G – relates to the engine specification. Built and supplied by Gardner, it was a five-cylinder engine of 7000cc and 78BHP • ECW – relates to the bodywork. The ‛running chassis’ was delivered to the Eastern coach works in Lowestoft, where it received a coach built body of the ‛Lowbridge’ type, with a height of 13ft 6inches Hammer Films released the first On the Buses film in 1971, developing the successful ITV sitcom of the same name which ran from 1969 to 1973. The show featured a pair of hapless bus drivers and their fellow workers, friends and relatives all based at a fictional bus depot in Essex. The bus garage used in the film was Eastern National’s bus garage at Wood Green, London. The film company also used several ‘withdrawn’ buses from the Eastern National fleet, including VN0 866.

This bus was shown in the film, with Reg Varney behind the wheel. The film was set in a slightly alternate version of the usual TV storyline but retained the ‘bawdy and sexist’ humour for which the series was famed. VN0 866 was sold by Eastern National after filming had finished, so it does not feature in the two follow up On the Buses films. VN0 866 was then bought by T. Canham & Sons (Services) Ltd. Of Whittlesey in 1972. It was repainted in Canham’s original livery of blue and cream, and there was a later fleet colour change to orange and cream. Canham’s operated routes around Cambridgeshire, and VN0 866 was regularly seen in Peterborough Bus Park (where the law courts are now) and in March town centre. Canham’s ceased operations in 1983, although VN0 866 may have been retired before then. During that time, how many of the passengers were aware of this bus’s illustrious past?

Pop into the museum during BusFest 10am-5pm on Sunday 20th May, for displays about local buses and children’s activities. Whittlesey Museum, Market St, Whittlesey. Opening hours: Friday 2.30-4.30pm Saturday 10am-12 noon Sunday 2.30-4.30pm £1 Adults/50p Children

March Mishaps! M

– by Holly-Jean

arch is an interesting place. There is a discussion page where you can meet all of March’s finest and find out about the town, you can showcase your expensive cars outside Costa and, if you’re lucky, you can meet the copious amount of geese that walk around as if they own the place. Now, I want to talk about those geese. A little while ago, I was walking through March High Street and they’re everywhere. Massive things that always want your food. I was walking along on my own with my hands full when suddenly, one was right in front of me. Now, I’m not exaggerating when I say that this thing ran at me with intent to embarrass me. It 100 percent sensed my fear and stared me right in the eyes as it came at me. I ran, waving my arms around, screaming, not remembering that I was slap bang in the town centre. That’s right, if you saw someone running from a seemingly innocent goose up near the Town Hall a few weeks back, that was me.

nonchalant really. Not me. Nope, this girl is not going to be part of any horror movies any time soon. One day, I was sat in the office alone when I heard glasses clinking together repeatedly. Trying to ignore it, I put some music on but had to quickly turn it off when all I could hear was loud clicking coming from the kitchen. Half of me wanted to know what was going on. The other half had her hand on the phone about to ring mum. Suddenly, the clicking stopped and the kettle started to boil. Now, I know you’re thinking ‘oh, brilliant.’ Nope. I am not making any tea or coffee at this point unless I can wash it down with some holy water. I do not know what boiled that kettle and I do not want to find out!

Also, we have so many pigeons that come and sit on our windowsills and watch us work. Geese are one thing, pigeons are an entirely different ball game for someone with a slight bird phobia. They stare at you with their beady little eyes and ‘coo’ absolutely And speaking of the Town Hall, that is actually where all day. We do also have the odd one fly into the I work. A beautiful building, slightly creepy at times, window which is so sad but also slightly funny (as long as they’re not hurt!) The other day, I had an office but we all like a bit of fun in our lives, don’t we? I full of children and I turned to look out of the window work with children and young people. And, it can be the most rewarding, but also the most hilariously when realising that there was a pigeon just sat on annoying thing in the world. Have you ever tried to the inside. Staring. Brilliant. How’s this one going to get a nine-year-old to listen to you after they have pan out? Turns out if you make pigeon noises back at them in an attempt to scare them off... they’re not stated amongst all of their friends that they are in fact a lot taller than you? No? Then you can’t judge too fussed and you just look ridiculous. So, the pigeon problem is still a concern. I can’t wait for summer me can you. A lot of the time, I start work before my colleagues and so I am alone in the office. The when my butterfly phobia comes out to play. building itself is around 100 years old and there is Although I can complain about creepy buildings some interesting history to it. Now, I don’t want that and birds that terrify me, March is a pretty great history coming back to meet me in ghost form when town. There’s actually lots to do (check out our I’m alone and have nobody to cry to! What’s On pages!) and, you’re part of one big community that has lots to offer. So, if you’re looking Often, I’ve told others in the office things like, ‘There’ve been some strange noises this morning’, for a great town to visit, or if you are a bird watcher, come down to March and see what it has to offer. or, ‘I swear someone keeps opening the door’

and so on and so forth. And, everybody is a bit

What are Tax Efficient Plans that Really Work? by Eamonn Dorling

There are legitimate ways to reduce exposure to taxation. For example, suppose you want to save money now to use in retirement. The most popular way is to save in a pension because a personal contribution will be uplifted by 25 percent by HMRC (the tax man). In most cases, if you are a higher rate tax payer there are even greater benefits. Furthermore, your fund has the opportunity to grow within a tax efficient regime thus boosting fund performance. Saving outside of a pension, it is sensible to maximise the use of Individual Savings Accounts (ISA) because the growth is not taxed. Each year HMRC limits the amount that can be invested in an ISA – currently £20,000 per individual, but if this is done year-on-year a significant amount can be shielded from tax.

later life planning such as long-term care provision and choices.

If you have assets outside of an ISA that has appreciated significantly the gains might be subject to capital gains tax. Investment Bonds have a different taxation regime and the best advice is to discuss with an Independent Financial Adviser who will guide you on the most appropriate way to reduce tax or suggest ways to claim it back – depending on your circumstances.

Reducing tax leaves more for you, if you need help contact me for a free initial consultation.

Protection of an estate from Inheritance Tax (IHT) is another area that requires careful planning. This might involve (strangely enough) considering taking funds out of ISA and using other investment strategies and the use of trusts and gifting need to be considered alongside

If everyone’s situations were the same, it would be easy to use a ‘one size fits all’ approach but this is not the case. It is important that all the things that are important to you are taken in to account. A bit like preparing for a journey – everyone takes different things with them.

Technology

The Personal Touch has Real Value I had a very good question asked of me yesterday – “Why was I selling a Toshiba laptop for £235, when the customer could buy the same model on Facebook for £150?” This caused me to smile, because the simple answer could be that I’m in business to make a living/profit. But rather than that, I explained the process we follow when re-furbishing a laptop for re-sale, i.e.: • Dismantle the laptop and: – Complete a ‘clean & paste’, whereby all dirt is removed from the exhaust/fan area and new artic-ice thermal paste is used on the processor graphics chips (value £60, and is a service every laptop requires every 12/18 months); – Test all components to ensure correct working; • Usually, we install a brand-new HDD (hard disk drive), unless the pre-existing HDD is relatively modern and passes all tests 100 percent; in which case the HDD will be ‘nuked’ to destroy all traces of previous data, prior to subsequent work (value £20-£60); • Usually we install a new battery, unless the old one passes stringent tests (value circa £35); • Next, I always install new 4 Gb RAM (value £35-£45); • I always provide a new charger (value £25); • Then we complete the ‘software build’, i.e. – Install Windows 10 Pro, and activate with Microsoft;

I call this my ‘Out of the box build’ – meaning that when you get home you switch it on and just use it, rather than going through the usual set-up process; • Finally, when the laptop is sold (usually with a ‘one-year, no-quibble warranty’) we then: – Personalise it for the customer; – Set-up any email accounts, or any particular accounts the customer requires; – Provide a free lesson, if required, on how to use the laptop. Hence, for all the above there is a, relatively, small difference in price to buying a laptop on eBay/ Facebook, i.e. ‘The personal touch’. In fact, if you consider the value of the work completed, it usually exceeds the actual cost of the laptop. So please feel free to call-in and discuss your computer needs; we usually have a selection of laptops/towers to choose from, either brand new or re-furbished. Finally, a word of warning – If your laptop is running hot please have it serviced, the picture below is from a laptop that was only in for a tune-up. It probably only had a few more weeks of life if this ‘clean and paste’ had not been completed. Happy Computing, Deborah & Len

– Install all security and other Microsoft patches; – Install all the appropriate, and latest, drivers for that particular make of laptop; – Install anti-virus; – Tune-up the laptop to ensure it is operating at maximum performance; –

Install various programs and applications, which the majority of customers require, e.g. Chrome, Google Earth, Word/Excel Applications for letters etc.

Pets’ Corner

Looking After Your Pet Rabbit – by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

Eating rabbits may well be a little distasteful to some of you, but that was why they were initially brought into Britain, probably by the Romans. Nowadays, they are a popular pet and also widely kept for breeding and showing. The domestication of rabbits is believed to have been started by monks who started selectively breeding them for coat colour as well as for food. Then later, the middle-class Victorians with too much time and money on their hands bred them for showing and competition, breeding the forerunners of many of the varieties we see today. Rabbits are herbivores, with their food passing twice through their gut. The first time the food goes through the digestive system it is primarily broken down, the rabbits eats the 'poo' from this digestion known as caecotrophs, which then mixes with stomach acids next time through the gut in order to be more efficiently digested. This system is necessary because it takes a lot of effort and energy to extract the vital components from a difficult substance like grass. Rabbits need to be able to reach their bottoms in order to eat the caecotrophs, so it is vitally important not to let them get fat. Rabbits need lots of good quality hay, fresh greens, dandelions,

other vegetables and/or a complete rabbit food. There are several makes of food available but the ones with the ‛pretty’ colours should be avoided. Bunnies are just like us in that they will take the tastiest option available, but this is usually the bits that make them fat, and once a rabbit is overweight it is very difficult to lose it. Another important food related condition is known as 'gut stasis' where the rabbit's gut slows down or stops, the food ferments in the gut and causes several problems. This is a life-threatening condition and veterinary help should be sought immediately. Rabbits should have an annual vaccination against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (two strains). Both diseases are uncompromising and almost certainly fatal. Bunnies make lovely pets and can be a good pet for a child or adult alike, but they need a bit more looking after than a lot of people think they do to keep them healthy, not just put in a hutch outside and looked at every now and again. So please research them properly if you are considering getting one.

LADYSMITH WI DATES Whittlesey Ladysmith W.I. will be supporting the guided walk organised by the Wildlife Trust at Lattersey Nature Reserve on Saturday, May 5th before taking a trip back in time at its next meeting. In November 1940 a Spitfire based at RAF Wittering crashed in Holme, where it remained until October 2015 when a week-long excavation at Holme Lode in the Great Fen unearthed this Mark 1 aircraft and the work was captured on film. Volunteers from the Great Fen Archaeology group were involved in the project and the group will be learning more about it at the next meeting on Tuesday, May 8th at 7.30pm in St. Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane. The competition will be WW2 memorabilia. The next lunch is planned for Tuesday, May 15th at the Nag's Head. New members are always welcome. More information from Sue 01733 205927 or Liz 07982 854872 or the group’s Facebook page.

NEW NAME, NEW LOGO A new name, updated logo, refreshed musical programme and many new players to the band; things have been busy at Whittlesey Concert Band. The band has made a smooth transition into its new name of Whittlesey Concert Band from Whittlesey Wind Ensemble and has updated its logo which features the iconic Buttercross of the town; coincidentally the name of one of its pieces 'The Buttercross March' composed by local composer Barry Strickle.

QUIZ RAISES CASH NGNPUK would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who turned out in heavy snow to attend its recent quiz night at Childers.

Why learn an instrument? on more areas of your life than you’d imagine. It can be a lot more than just a way to pass the time!

To certain people, music comes naturally. For others, it’s like an alien language. It’s difficult to find the way to start understanding it, but like every skill, it just takes the right approach to get over that first hurdle. But why put the time in to get past that initial frustrating, confusing first step? Well, there are many benefits to learning an instrument that some people may not realise. Firstly, if you’ve never played any instruments before, it’s a lot of fun and a wonderful hobby to use your time creatively. Secondly, it’s a great way to express yourself. If you have something to say, be it personal, political, or even educational, you can communicate your thoughts through writing and performing music. It’s also a brilliant way to meet people and form close relationships. When you play music with others, you’re relying heavily on understanding each other to make sure the music sounds good and, as a result, you’ll begin to find your communication skills grow, helping with any social anxieties you may have. As well as all of this, it can help with cognitive functions, such as memory, language and some studies have even shown it to assist with recovering from brain injuries! This is for adults and children alike, and getting your child to start learning an instrument at a young age can make a huge difference to their ability to learn and help develop their brain. We’re not claiming that, after one lesson, you’ll be able to join Mensa, or selling out the Albert Hall, but regardless of one’s ability, learning an instrument can have a huge positive impact

The company started out as a dedicated organ shop, Peterborough Organ Centre, until 2014, when a slight change of location and store revival took place. Since the music scene had begun to move away from organs at this point, the company branched out to digital pianos, keyboards, synthesisers, electric and acoustic guitars, drum kits and even professional stage and studio equipment. Along with the store becoming larger and the range of instruments becoming wider, the company rebranded as Breve Music. Still within the Rivergate complex, the store is now outside the arcade at the very front of ASDA car park. As well as being a music shop to get all of your instruments and accessories, Breve also has a music school on-site so you can learn how to use your instruments too! Regardless of where you bought your instrument, Breve offers a range of music lessons on popular instruments. They can help with piano, guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and ukulele. They also teach music theory and hold monthly jam sessions for students. Especially for you, the Discovering Whittlesey magazine reader, we have a fantastic offer for your initial introduction to music lessons. Contact Breve Music today and quote the code: DISC4.

Frank Ifield Remembers...

egendary singing star Frank Ifield is set to appear live on stage in Whittlesey in a special show at The Ivy Leaf Club. The Australian-based entertainer will be taking a nostalgic look back at his fivedecade long career at the Gracious Street venue on Friday, May 11th.

You can meet the celebrated legend in person as he performs his own show at the Ivy Leaf from 7.30pm, whilst also helping to raise funds in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

UK-born Frank started as a country singer when he was only 13 years of age, and in the late 1950s, after releasing more than 40 records in Australia and appearing on countless TV and radio shows, he returned to his homeland to make his mark internationally.

Customers are guaranteed to have an enjoyable night’s entertainment which will include music before and after Frank’s show by the ever-popular David Carter, who also performed at Barbara Lindsey’s fund-raising event at the Ivy Leaf club last year, and there will also be a raffle during this fun night out.

He was then the first artist to have three consecutive No.1 hits in the charts with I Remember You, Lovesick Blues and The Wayward Wind and on Frank’s first major tour of the UK he was supported by a young Liverpool band… The Beatles!

Tickets are £17.50 each and can be purchased from the Ivy Leaf Club on 01733 202579 (Mon-Thurs after 6pm) and Fri/Sat/Sun (11am to Midnight). Tickets can also be obtained by calling 07388 582821.

According to the Guinness Book of Hit Records from 1952 to 1980, the singer spent 158 weeks on the charts and 17 weeks at number one with four separate records. Frank will perform his hits and tell his amazing story in a two-hour show, entitled Frank Ifield – Remembers, that will include video highlights and also feature special guest, top Australian recording star Nicki Gillis.

Frank was the first artist to have three consecutive No. 1 hits in the charts

The Local Music Scene

Don't Panic! PART TWO - by Dave Bailey

This month we look at improvisation… Murphy's Law has an uncanny way of operating when you least expect it. There have been many times when a sound check has turned into either wacky races or a hunt for a specific tool that you just know is sitting on the workbench at home, usually 20 plus miles away. The unexpected should always be expected when it comes to live performance and “amongst its weapons are fear and surprise”, to quote the Monty Python team. Over the years at events people have turned up to play or sing to a variety of different recorded media or strange instruments, spoons, saws, butter cartons, with a weird and wonderful, sometimes unique, array of connectors, jacks and even bare wires. From the young lad who could not understand why his guitar smoked and was no louder after he had cut off his jack plug and fitted a 13-amp plug – well it was an electric guitar and thankfully the fuse blew before he did – to the girl who arrived with her backing tracks on a video cassette, yes just the cassette. Hosting events means always being prepared and resourceful. Doing a sound check with your own kit works well until a performer insists on using a 1950s’ broadcast microphone because it gives them the sound they get at home, plugged into their Dansette Cadet or they demand to use their own mic, so they do not get germs from other performers (always have a pack of antiseptic wipes in case you need to sanitise the mic). Thankfully for most instruments and microphones the industry standard for connections has not changed much from the 1960s. But the weird and wonderful do appear from time to time. The latest spanner in the works however is one manufacturer who has decided to fit a headphone jack that only interfaces to their own products, but I will not mention their name, no free ads here. 64

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

Now we come to the useful box, most performers carry round with them. As we said last month gaffer tape, it stops it moving, can insulate wires as a last resort, but you will also always need an array of different adapters. Mini jacks to standard, male to female connections, stereo to mono to stereo, XLR male/female to jack, a pair of cutters, flat blade and Philips screwdrivers, insulation tape, a three-terminal scotch block connector, five, 10 and 13-amp fuses, spare mains to equipment (kettle), mains extension, mic, jack to jack, speaker and assorted audio leads… the list is endless, and you will always be missing the one thing you have not packed. Hand knobs on mic and speaker/lighting stands will invariably shatter just before you have tightened them up so pack away an adjustable spanner, it’s almost mandatory. Total failure of PA or mixer can be terminal for a gig and trying to provide a work around is best attempted at home in a ‘What if Scenario’, for a duo with two powered speakers, going direct into them is workable if the mixer dies. If the front of house speakers are passive, then using any back line can be tricky. We always take a small portable emergency mixer if travelling any distance to an event, which was purchased on Ebay. Cheap, cheerful and barely functional for emergencies. Some touring bands take a spare ‘one of everything’ – the downside being budget and need for a box van... Whatever a gig throws at you, as it says on the front of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – “Don’t Panic” and try to rationalise what the minimum is you can get away with and improvise. Now where did I put that Allen key? Local open mic listings can be found at www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm MAY 2018

School News

ALDERMAN JACOBS TO OPEN FOR PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN Alderman Jacobs School is excited to be opening its own pre-school provision from September 2018. The new nursery will provide pre-school play and learning activities for local children aged three years and older. The new pre-school will be housed in the main school building, to start with, so that the children can feel safe and secure. The recent good Ofsted grading praised the learning opportunities available and the close relationships that staff at the school have with parents and children. One of the many benefits for children attending will be a smooth transition to the Reception classrooms because they will already be familiar with the Early Years’ teachers and practitioners. Children attending the pre-school will be able to share the wonderful outdoor space that the Early Years’ children at Alderman Jacobs already benefit from and will also have chance to use the Early Years’ technology zone, equipped with light boxes, programable robots and iPads. The nursery room has been newly resourced so that children have the very best possible start. For more information contact the school on 01733 202403 or call into the main school office for a prospectus and admission pack. We look forward to showing you around! Cathy Carlisle, Headteacher

An Evening with Brian Turner continues Wisbech Grammar's culinary celebrations Wisbech Grammar School is leading the way in offering unique dining experiences to the local community and further afield, with celebrity chefs visiting to cook stunning cuisines in a variety of pop-up restaurants, in conjunction with Seasoned by Chefs, a top Foodie online magazine. Following on from the incredible success of Cyrus Todiwala’s evening in November 2017, the school is thrilled to be able to confirm Brian Turner’s visit to host an exciting evening celebration of British food on Friday, May 11th. The event is taking place within the Skelton Hall which is a unique glass-fronted £2 million building overlooking the school’s stunning 34-acre grounds. “We had a brilliant time at the Cyrus Todiwala evening... the food was great, the ambiance was perfect, and the view across the grounds took our breath away. It felt like we were in a top London restaurant, not in a school” – Mr and Mrs W. Spalding Visitors will be welcomed with Prosecco and canapes on arrival at 6pm to be followed by

Matters BADGES OF HONOUR FOR SERVICE VETERANS

Local people who have served in the armed forces are being invited to a special ceremony this summer to honour their courage and sacrifice in both war and peace. Fenland District Council is organising another Veterans Day celebration on Friday, June 29th, to recognise our armed forces veterans and their service to our country. The event will include a thanksgiving service at St Mary’s Church in Whittlesey, followed by lunch at the Childers Sports and Social Club in Station Road, Whittlesey. At the heart of the celebration will be the presentation of the HM Armed Forces Veterans Badge to anyone who has served in the Army, Royal Navy or Royal Air Force who has not previously had one presented to them. Veterans of all ages, men and women, are entitled to receive a badge, regardless of length of service, including volunteer and regular reserves. Any veterans who want to take part must register their names with the council as soon as possible – and by Tuesday, May 1st at the latest – to ensure that the correct number of badges can be ordered from the Veterans Agency. The badges will be presented by the new High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, Dr Andrew Harter, CBE. This year’s ceremony comes a day before the official Armed Forces Day on June 30th, when other events to celebrate our armed forces will be held across the UK and a special Armed Forces Day flag will also be flown outside Fenland Hall in County Road, March.

QUIZ NIGHT The Friends of St Andrews Committee are holding a quiz night on Saturday, May 5th at St Andrews Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Admission is £4.00 per person, maximum team size of six people. He said: “Special thanks go to Ronnie who raised over £1000 at his 60th birthday party. This year we have three different lapel pin badges to commemorate the end of the Great War in 1918.” If you would like any of this year's badges, please contact Ray on 0785 068 0785. Church Matters

Renewal of Faith

I would like to share with you the renewal of faith enjoyed by those who attended the service at St Thomas’ on the night before Easter Sunday. These promises which represent a practical life of faith are made after we have renewed our baptismal promises. This is what believing in God means to us. Priest: Those who are baptized are called to worship and serve God. Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? With the help of God, I will. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? With the help of God, I will. Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ? With the help of God, I will. Will you seek and serve Christ in all people, loving your neighbour as yourself? With the help of God, I will. Will you acknowledge Christ’s authority over human society, by prayer for the world and its

leaders, by defending the weak, and by seeking peace and justice? With the help of God, I will. May Christ dwell in your hearts through faith, that you may be rooted and grounded in love and bring forth the fruit of the Spirit. Amen. This is our inspiration to serve God in the world in which we live. To minister to the community, we call home. To reach out to neighbours in need. To support and encourage goodness. To denounce and overcome evil. God bless you all. Revd Nigel

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Ever Wondered What Life is All About? Why not try the Alpha Course? Here at the Whittlesey Christian Church we will be running a series of free weekly sessions specifically designed to explore and answer questions that many people have, such as: Is There More To Life Than This? Was Jesus Real? What Is Faith And How Can I Have It? The sessions are very informal, starting with tea/ coffee and light refreshments, followed by a short presentation on the evening’s topic. You then have the opportunity to ask questions, no matter how basic, and discuss the topic within a relaxed small group setting. When and where is it held? Thursday June 7th at 7.30pm Whittlesey Christian Church, 23 Broad Street, Whittlesey PE7 1HA.

Over 24 million people worldwide, from all walks of life, have already attended an Alpha course and found it has answered many of their questions. Jenny Wright from Whittlesey, who attended our last Alpha course, said: “I thoroughly enjoyed Alpha, it really changed my outlook on life. I found the topics thought provoking and the small group discussions provided a nonthreatening environment in which to ask my questions. The people were friendly and I would recommend the experience to anyone.” Why not try Alpha for yourself and see what a difference it can make to your life? To assist with our planning please register your interest by contacting us on the details listed below.
