JUNE 2018
Introduction
Welcome to Your June Issue.
When I was at school many, many years ago, June was a month that filled me with mixed emotions. It was the time of year when the dreaded school exams were in full-swing. A time when out of school hours you knew you should be revising but the lure of meeting your mates was hard to resist. On a serious note. Exam-time can be extremely stressful for both schoolkids and parents. As teenagers get older and face the prospect of becoming equipped to deal with life at college or in the so-called ‘real world’, exams take on an even greater importance which can lead to increased stress and anxiety, so give them your support. This month’s issue includes an article by the Young Peoples Counselling Service which focuses on the issues and which I believe should be essential reading for both schoolchildren and their parents. On a completely different note. This month also sees England’s latest bid to win the football World Cup for the first time since 1966 when my namesake Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick to help secure a famous victory. Unfortunately, the prospect of watching England play fills me with another bout of mixed emotions…

One of the great pleasures for many schoolchildren is reading, so I was pleased to hear about our local MP Steve Barclay’s Read to Succeed Campaign which aims to raise enough money to buy a new reading book for every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire. Reading opens up children’s imaginations and can lead to a life-long love affair that will continue throughout their lives. Whatever your politics, I believe his campaign is great news for local schoolchildren…

History
Looking Back in Time
– by Jen Barback, Curator of Whittlesey Museum the whole town of Whittlesey was burnt down accidentally, together with two churches and two court houses and two of the Abbot's barns, full of grain; and moreover, fourteen men were burnt at the same place.” In June 1277, again "the whole of the Abbot's manor at Whittlesey was burnt." As there are no relevant Ely Abbey records for the same date it must be assumed that the fire engulfed both parishes and that in effect the town was completely rebuilt from scratch in the mid-1200s.

istory is a funny thing. On the one hand, everywhere in the world has existed ‘for ever’, or at least as long as the world itself has been around. Even if the soil and rock here this week was once in a different place on the surface of the globe, and the people only arrived since the last Ice Age, there has always been something at the latitude and longitude that Whittlesey occupies today. On the other hand, time is vicious and destructive to mortal remains. Even geology is active when you consider hundreds of millions of years, all the rock created by the first cooling of the planet has long since been eroded away and melted back down to create the younger rocks of the modern world. When looking back in time on the Earth, this is the furthest of the natural limits which form barriers beyond which it is difficult to find remains from the past. There are many of these local limits – in Whittlesey the brick clay was laid down in the Jurassic period so it is quite usual to find a curly ammonite fossil from that time but you are very unlikely to find a trilobite, given that these sea-woodlice had already become extinct before the clay was formed. For someone interested in history rather than geology, there are natural limits much closer to home. Even though you may find broken remains from the Bronze Age buried in the ground, the Thorney annals record the local limit for finding history that has existed above ground in Whittlesey until the present day. In April 1244 “almost

Eastrea suffered a similar setback fewer than ten generations ago, in 1771. A villager was boiling tar for repairs when the liquid overflowed into the fire and set fire to his house. The flames spread rapidly so that practically the whole hamlet, extensive as it was, was destroyed, and walking around the village today the oldest structures that you can see were made after this date. Natural limits do not have to be linked to destruction, however. You will not find buildings in the village of Pondersbridge from earlier than 1631, because Bevill’s Leam was cut in that year and so before that there was no bridge to settle around. In fact the first written record of a bridge there isn’t until 1657 when a man called Dugdale wrote “And so to Wittlesey, by the famous cut called King's Delfe, or Sword Dike (made by Canutus) on our left hand: which delfe is, for the space of about two miles now scoured: But then, going over a Bridge where is a straight cut made from thence to Wittlesey, we left the delfe on our left hand, a great deale; for it went directly to Peterborough” – a description which makes no mention of a village surrounding the bridge at that time at all. Let us all hope that there will be no dramatic events in the next thousand years to convert our present architecture into archaeology! Whittlesey Museum, Market St, Whittlesey. Get RID of that Fungal Nail Infection! Fungal infections occur when microscopic fungi enter the nail usually due to trauma to the nail. Fungi that are already present in or on your body can also reproduce and spread through the nail, causing nail infections. The fungi thrive between the toes in the moist warm environment of socks and shoes.
Fungal nail infections can affect eight percent of the population at any one time. They can be unsightly, and people are often embarrassed by the way they look. It may affect part of the nail, the entire nail, or several nails. Common signs of a fungal nail infection include a distorted nail that may be discoloured; it may lift off from the nail bed and become brittle and thickened. Podiatrists have been researching new methods for treatment, and we are now delighted to offer ‘The Lacuna Method’. This involves drilling multiple holes across the fungal area. We then direct anti-fungal
spray into the holes and spray across the nail plate. The treatment involves this spray being re-applied at home every day and returning to us in six weeks for a review. This treatment has proved to give very effective results, it is relatively painless and no anaesthetic is required. We allow about an hour for the treatment. Our podiatrists can discuss with you multiple treatment options, including the Lacuna Method, and we can help you to have nicer nails in time for summer....

What are Emotions? There are a number of agreed basic emotions which are fear, anger, sadness, disgust, contempt, pride, shame, anxiety, love, happiness and surprise. We drift through these emotional states throughout the day but exactly what is their purpose and why do they arise? Read on to find out. Emotions are the undercurrent to our response to an event. Our brains are taking in thousands of pieces of information every second from our surroundings and creating common themes. When something fails to fit within these themes our brain focuses on this and reacts. The tone of that reaction is underpinned by an emotion. For example, you are walking down your high street and notice a familiar face across the road. If it is somebody you like our emotion is one of happiness and surprise. We target that person with a wide smile and an open stance. However, if it is somebody we dislike, we may feel anger leading to a very different course of action such as looking the other way and walking faster. The emotions we attribute are based on both our own and humanity’s history. For example, we are all born with the similar fears (e.g. poisonous animals, heights) and similar activities that make us happy (e.g. people, food). However, our individual experiences modify these. For example, those born in rural Africa will have a different response to snakes than fear; equally a rock climber will have modified their response to heights as one of happiness or pride.
These emotions shape our reactions and therefore directly influence our decision making which ultimately shapes our life and helps us function within society. Think of the consequences of not having pride in your appearance. You may choose to attend work in your night clothing, creating a very different reaction to what you say! If you did not feel anxious about driving fast or fear the consequences of being in a road traffic accident, think of the chaos that would ensue on the roads. Ultimately emotions (both positive and negative) are important in helping us make sense of the world and function in society.

Your Garden
June Gardening Tips What an awful start we had to May; let’s hope June starts with sunny, warm weather. Although we see it as a summer month, it can often disappoint. However, as we approach Midsummer’s Day, the nights are lighter which gives us more time in the garden, especially if you go out to work. I remember my father digging until it was too dark to see! June is one of the busiest months of the year for the vegetable gardener: there are crops to plant, sow, and harvest, weeding, watering, feeding, getting rid of pests – the list seems never-ending. You really do need to keep on top of all these jobs to get the best out of your plot. Not only will your crops benefit from the longer sunnier days, so will the weeds! Regular hoeing is the best way to keep them at bay, or spreading mulch around the plants, or even growing through weed-suppressant membrane –good for squashes and courgettes. Garden pests can have a devastating effect on crops and, with the latest concerns over chemical pest control, an interesting alternative is using nematodes. Beneficial nematodes as pest control will attack soil-borne insect pests with no harmful effects on earthworms, plants, animals or humans, making it an environmentally friendly solution. You can use water-in nematodes against the following:• Slugs, ant nests, (dependent on soil temperature). • Leatherjackets, chafer grubs (in April and October, to coincide with vulnerable parts of their life cycles). • Carrot fly, cabbage root fly, cutworms, onion fly, sciarid fly, caterpillars, gooseberry sawfly, thrips and codling moth - (all can be attacked with a single product).
sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position. • Thin out seedlings, and plant others in their final growing positions. • Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies. • Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface, and use for compost but leave the roots in the ground as a good source of nitrogen. • Once you are sure that frosts are over, you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows and squashes. • Succession sow beetroot, salad crops, carrots and, later in the month, Florence fennel. Traditionally, Florence fennel is sown after the longest day, June 21st, as it is less likely to bolt: sowing in succession is a good idea. If the weather is dry, then water your seed drills well before sowing – this way the young plants will develop a good root system. • Last chance to sow runner beans. • Brussels sprouts, leeks, sprouting broccoli and the last of the summer, autumn and red cabbages and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted. Protect carrots with insect-proof netting, and net brassicas to deter pigeons.
Happy planting!
There are plenty of sites on the Internet where you can find further information on nematodes and where to purchase them. Jobs to do:• Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed, but make

Their repertoire of songs includes Lambeth Walk, Down at the Old Bull and Bush, Knocked ’em in the Old Kent Road, Maybe it’s Because I’m a Londoner, Any Old Iron, I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles, and other familiar tunes. There will be Union Jacks available on the day to wave as they sing and as they go by in the parade. It promises to be a procession of vibrant music, colour and exciting entertainment with many of the acts performing on the day taking part in the parade and the organisers want to encourage as many people as possible to line the streets of the parade to give it a full carnival atmosphere. Once the festival has been declared ‘open’ the excitement continues with a full programme of music, dance, entertainment, stalls, amusements and much more. This year’s World War II flypast will involve the Spitfire, an aircraft that always amazes crowds with its awesome display and invariably brings a tear to the eye as we reminisce about those who fought for us in the war. Home Interiors
Kitchen Trends – by Interior Designer, Yasmin Chopin Want to know what’s popular in the world of kitchens right now? There are designs with timeless appeal and others that offer state-ofthe-art contemporary style. Fitted and unfitted. No two kitchens are the same. You can spend a lot or a little, but every penny will be thoroughly considered; a new kitchen is not an impulse buy. So, to help you think about the priorities for your new kitchen here’s a short review of what’s happening in the kitchen showroom. COLOUR: All white kitchens are highly popular – they’re the most saved images on-line. This aspirational look satisfies the wish for a clean, easy to maintain, hygienic kitchen. Choose a fresh white kitchen from any supplier, in any style. Smooth and unfussy? Go handle-less. Smart and crisp? Add stainless steel door furniture. White is way out in front in terms of popularity, but other colours have character and warmth. Close in second place is the more masculine grey/black combo. And, you may be surprised, dark blue and heritage green follow up in third and fourth places. These two-colour options take on a traditional look when accessorised with gold, brass or bronze. APPLIANCES: Integrated appliances make the space neater and less fussy, but if you want to show off a space-age fridge, your designer can incorporate it as a free-standing item. Cooking ranges are rarely requested. Hobs, especially induction hobs, are steaming way – even professional cooks find these better than gas; easy to clean, immediate response, quicker cooking. Tip: Gas isn’t great for open plan kitchens because the flame accentuates smells. Wine cooling fridges are popular, and dish-washing drawers as well. To find space for them in your kitchen you could move out the washing machine and freezer. The boiling hot-water tap is seen by some as an essential, but not by all. And side-byside ovens (one being a full-size microwave oven)
are practical for home entertaining as you can get a lot of food ready simultaneously. NEW: We want to spend time in the kitchen, we want to make the kitchen central to family life. We want the kitchen to look, not like a kitchen, but homely, like a lounge. These unfitted units from SieMatic are designed to fulfil these needs simply and stylishly. Their sturdy elegant legs allow you to see the floor run under them. I love them, they’re the perfect answer to open-plan living. Photo credits: SieMatic

A NEW BOOK FOR EVERY YEAR 4 CHILD IN NORTH EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE - By Steve Barclay MP
book donated, we will place a library token, which each child can take to their local library and take part in the Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge.” Last year, local libraries recorded an 11 percent increase in children participating in the Summer Reading Challenge as a result of the scheme. Thanks to the kind donations from local businesses and the community, the MP raised enough money to buy 2500 books – one for every year 4 and year 5 child in the constituency.
T
his week, Steve Barclay MP launches his Read to Succeed Campaign which aims to raise enough money to buy a new reading book for every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire. Steve first launched the campaign in 2016 after teachers raised the difficulty of encouraging children to read throughout the summer holidays which caused their literacy skills to suffer a dip after the school break. The initiative, supported by the Bishop of Ely, teachers, businesses and community groups, ensures that every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire can have a new book to take home and keep before the holidays. This year group has been chosen because it is the age at which children often begin to read more independently. Steve Barclay MP said: “I launched the campaign three years ago after a number of teachers raised the issue that many children fail to make progress during the summer holiday, when they are out of school. Read to Succeed aims to help combat this. In the back of every
Local parent and teacher, Catherine Pearson said: “As both a parent and teacher I would like to thank Steve Barclay for his efforts with the Read to Succeed campaign and would encourage anyone who is able, to support this initiative. Fenland is a deprived area and anything that can be implemented to increase children's interest in and enjoyment of reading has to be worthwhile. Giving some children the opportunity to own a brand-new book for the first time and to experience the feel and smell of fresh pages can have such a positive impact. For other children, they may be introduced to a new author or different series of books which may open a new world to them. My own daughter was lucky enough to be able to choose a book on a topic she was interested in, World War II. Every year she has taken part in the library summer reading challenge and this year she very much enjoyed a trip to The Houses of Parliament as she was fortunate to be one of the prize winners." The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to read six books of their choice throughout the school summer holiday and once completed, children will receive a medal

and a certificate at an awards ceremony. But this is not all, there are also prizes on offer for the schools with the most children who complete the Summer Reading Challenge. Prizes which can be won include: • Whole Class Film Screening at The Light Cinema (Wisbech) • Swimming pool party at any FDC swimming pool • Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting Rhymes’ Workshop Session with Rhubarb Theatre • Fenland Bushcraft Workshop Session • Animal Handling Workshop with Lion Learners • Individual Prize Winners will also win a tour around the Houses of Parliament To continue the success of last year’s campaign Steve needs donations from local businesses and individuals to buy new books. This year Steve has partnered with the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre who are kindly supplying books at a reduced rate. Just £150 would be enough to purchase a new book for a whole class of

children in Fenland and any donations will make a positive contribution towards encouraging children to read throughout the summer break and fostering a life-long love for reading. Mr Barclay added: “I hope that constituents will join the Bishop of Ely, local head teachers and above all students, to allow for some children their very first book to own and for others the excitement of having something new to read over the summer. 1347 books will allow us to give every child in Year 4 a new book and should we receive more, we will be able to roll it out to further year groups.” Donations may be made payable directly to the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre via electronic transfer, cheque or telephone by Monday, June 25th. For more information on how to donate, please visit Steve’s website: stevebarclay.net/ read-to-succeed-2018 Alternatively, you can purchase any of the requested titles at any store and deliver them to: Steve Barclay MP, MJS House, Wisbech Road, March PE15 0BA

Consumer Advice
Adapting to the needs of the elderly and vulnerable - while disabling the rogue traders IT is well known that the UK population is ageing, with more people living longer lives than previously. There are now over 15 million people aged 60 or over, making up 23 per cent of the UK population. And where possible, often taking into account financial circumstances and health, many choose to continue to live in their own home; safe and secure surroundings they have worked their lives for. But with getting older also comes the need for additional help; perhaps to aid with mobility and generally getting around. It may come as no surprise that rogue traders work in this area too, often targeting the most vulnerable in the community. Scams including cold callers claiming to be from their victim’s GP surgery, asking for an appointment to discuss the person’s mobility needs, are not uncommon. The calls are targeted because in many cases, it is believed that unscrupulous firms are buying databases containing details of patients and their medical / mobility needs. Quite often they arrange to meet the person either in their own home or at a designated place – and will persuade them to buy mobility aids (which could include bath lifts, scooters or reclining chairs) at inflated prices. More often than not, these aids are unnecessary, inappropriate and always expensive. But as champions of the consumer, Safe Local Trades and Safe Local Services are able to offer recommended reliable trades/ companies, which elderly and less abled people can use with peace of mind. Our member skilled traders work across the PE area, and talk with customers and their families and loved ones about their needs and expectations; whether that be a low level shower room or wet room, ramps and rails, non slip flooring, hoists, door widening and much more. They will make an appointment to come and discuss your needs and deliver a first class service allowing the quality adaptions and modifications to help customers live a little more comfortable in their home. And did you know that as part of our Safe Local Services offering, we have signed specialist company Bentley Nursing Supplies - a retail outlet providing Mobility Aids, Nursing Equipment and Consumables and Continence Supplies to the general public. The company was formed in 1991, based on the need for a reliable supplier in the local area; offering free no obligation home or premises visit with demonstration and professional assessment on all equipment. So Remember: Never deal with cold callers – however persuasive they are. If you receive a call of this nature, always check with your GP surgery before agreeing to a visit. Likewise, any cold callers offering to carry out work on your property should be met with extreme caution. If you need a recommendation for a safe, approved local tradesperson, visit www.safelocaltrades.co.uk or call 0800 014 1832. Legal
Always use a Legal Professional for your LPA – by Bev Chase
A former Court of Protection judge, Denzil Lush, claimed last year that he would prefer the creation of a deputyship over a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). I find this to be a strange comment because a person at risk of losing capacity cannot choose a Deputy; these powers can only be arranged by the court after they are no longer deemed to have capacity. It is true that LPAs are powerful and binding, but this is a reason why undertaking an LPA should only be done under the guidance of a legal professional, not to argue that the system is flawed. A legal professional will have the training required to give sound advice, and will also still be around in years to come. By choosing a professional, the client will also have some comeback should the forms be incorrect or something goes wrong with the registration process, whereas by using an unregulated practitioner there will be no comeback whatsoever. Personally, I would prefer a client to sign an LPA, providing they have capacity, than to go for a Deputyship order, not least because it is faster and less expensive. I want my clients to understand their decision; as such I always spend sufficient time with them explaining the risks that can arise when choosing the wrong attorney or from not making an LPA at all. I can also certify their forms when they are ready to make a decision on this. An unregulated LPA provider will not be able to act as a certificate provider, unless they have known the client for a period of two years or more. This means that the client would also have to involve their doctor or friends to do so and, in my experience, many people would rather keep their personal
business private. By acting as certificate provider on these forms, I can also ensure that I see my client alone so I can be satisfied that they have full mental capacity and are not being coerced into signing the form against their will, and sign a statement to that effect. Fraser Dawbarns securely store your original LPA and send you two certified copies; we also monitor how many copies have been sent out. If a non-professional has nowhere to store the original LPA, they would likely send it to the client for safekeeping. If it is lost, this would result in new forms being prepared, with additional and unnecessary costs to the client. Unlike the ‘Enduring Powers of Attorney’ they replaced, the LPA has to be registered in order to be legally binding. Registering the form doesn’t mean that the Donor has lost mental capacity as per the EPA, but I always recommend to my clients that it is better for the forms to be registered once they have been signed as they will then be available for immediate use, should the Donor lose capacity. Considering the Office of the Public Guardian has at times taken three months to register LPAs, it is best to be prepared in case something urgent arises which the attorney needs to deal with. I personally feel that Mr Lush’s comments were unfair towards LPAs. As with everything, there is the risk of abuse but the procedure for putting an LPA in place is considerably more straightforward than appointing a Deputy – and you retain control. If you feel this is something you may need in the next few years, then by seeing a legal professional, you are limiting the opportunities for this to be misused.

Phil’s Ride
Community Spirit on Two Wheels! – by Holly-Jean
P
hilip Beeton, aged 50, from Southery, Norfolk was a fiancé, a father, a brother, a son and an all-round family man. In 2015 he was killed in a road traffic collision by a 20-tonne lorry tipper, while on his way home from an average day at work. He is remembered and loved by many.
In his memory there is an annual charity event called ‘Phil’s Ride’ held in Southery. It was set up back in 2016 by his fiancee, Jane, and really good friend, David Fletcher. The idea was that people would show up on motorcycles for a 100-mile-long trip or bicycles to participate in a 24-mile round trip. This was to celebrate his life and raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance who attended to Phil on the day of the crash, and saved the life of his nephew, who was also in the accident. Riding two wheels was close to his heart as he and his fiancee used to ride together. On the motorbike route there is one stop, Blakeney. This is a place where Jane and Phil used to visit regularly. Every penny raised on the day goes straight to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. On the first year in 2016 they didn’t expect many. There was no ‘sign up’ and no sponsorship forms to fill out and so, they had to wait and see how many showed up on the day. They were astonished by the turnout from such a small village and £6278 was raised in just one day in memory of Phil. The ride starts outside the Olde White Bell pub in Southery, which was Phil’s local pub. Jane, Phil’s fiancee, says that there is a ‘sense of family’ at ‘the Bell’.

Shocked by how much money they initially raised, the event was scheduled again for 2017 and the target was to raise just 1p over the previous amount. The turnout was even bigger and the emotion that Phil’s family and friends felt as they saw all of the people show up to support the EAAA and remember Phil was overwhelming. This event shows off such a beautiful sense of community, camaraderie and family. Everyone got goose bumps and clapped as the bikers departed and when they came back, the music started, the raffle was called, and pride was felt by all. On this day in 2017, £12,155.22 was raised through buckets and sponsorships. I was lucky enough to be a part of this event and I couldn’t be happier to support such an amazing cause. I think just by reading this article you can sense how special this event is. It is so easy to get involved and without a doubt it is so worth it. This year will be the third year of Phil’s Ride and although the target amount is just 1p over 2017’s money raised, I think you’ll agree it deserves so much more. You never know when you might need the air ambulance, please get on your bike and get involved! Phil's Ride 2018 will be on Sunday, August 26th and is open to anyone on two wheels who would like to take part. The team, comprising family and friends of Phil, are hoping to repeat the success of 2017 and also encourage children to take part in their own course, mapped out on Southery playing field. GARDEN SET TO BLOSSOM THANKS TO TESCO CASH A volunteer community group is celebrating after securing thousands of pounds to help them create an anniversary garden in Whittlesey. Whittlesey Street Pride has been awarded £4000 from Tesco’s community grant scheme, Bags of Help, after being voted for by shoppers. The funding will be used to create a garden in Grosvenor Road celebrating the group’s 10th anniversary last year. It will feature a raised flower bed with an eye-catching beet-cutter feature in recognition of the area’s sugar beet industry. Fred Mills, chairman of Whittlesey Street Pride, said: “We’re delighted to have won the maximum Bags of Help grant available, and would like to thank everyone in the local community who voted for us. “The grant means we can go ahead with our anniversary garden with beet-cutter display, which will enhance the site and the surrounding areas.”

Councillor Peter Murphy, portfolio holder for the environment at Fenland District Council, which co-ordinates Fenland’s fourteen Street Pride groups, congratulated Whittlesey volunteers for their success. “This grant scheme sees local people decide how money should be spent in the community, so it’s great to see them support Street Pride and recognise the work volunteers do in their area. The garden sounds wonderful; I can’t wait to see it come to life.” Shoppers voted for Whittlesey Street Pride to win the Bags of Help grant at Tesco Extra Peterborough in November and December last year. Grants of £1000, £2000 and £4000 were available, with Whittlesey winning the top amount. Run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, the scheme sees grants raised from the sale of carrier bags awarded to thousands of local community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, the scheme has provided more than £48 million to to more than 13,000 local community projects.

SCHOOLCHILDREN LEARN SAFETY SKILLS Whittlesey primary schoolchildren are among hundreds learning vital safety skills as part of a series of interactive workshops being held across Fenland. Around 350 Year Five pupils from 11 schools in and around March and Chatteris initially took part in the Safety Zone, which teaches children how to stay safe at home and in the community. The first workshops were held at March Fire Station with more being held at Whittlesey Fire Station and Wisbech Fire Station. This year’s lessons include what do to if there's a fire in your home, the best ways to help someone struggling in water – and even how to avoid scaring a dog. Other topics include staying safe in cars, coping with bullying and how to identify and report antisocial behaviour. The Safety Zone is a Fenland Community Safety Partnership project and has been running for more than 10 years. It is organised by Fenland District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council with help from Cambridgeshire Police, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and Wood Green Animal Shelter. Councillor David Oliver, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder responsible for community safety, said: “The Safety Zone events continue to be a huge success, with around 850 year five pupils taking part in them every year. “They offer valuable life skills to our young people in a fun and interactive way, helping them to protect themselves and their families too.” “Sessions are free and would not happen without the support of all the agencies involved, and the feedback from schools is always really positive.” Photo: Firefighter Matthew Wilson shows Westwood Primary School pupils how to dial 999 in the event of a fire
SHANAE SIGORNEY’S SENSATIONAL SHOWING IN GYMNASTICS NATIONALS! Shanae Sigorney has had an extremely successful month of gymnastics competitions. On Sunday, April 22nd, Shanae travelled to Ipswich to compete in the east regional compulsory level 3 competition, where the best ten-year-olds in the region compete to pass their grading. Shanae performed brilliantly over five pieces of apparatus and passed her grade with flying colours, being placed fourth and scoring enough to qualify for the national finals. On Saturday May 12th, Shanae travelled to Stokeon-Trent to represent the east region at the national finals. Once again, Shanae competed well over all five pieces of apparatus and helped Team East secure a silver medal against ten other regions from across Great Britain. Shanae was individually placed 25th out of 41 of the best ten-year-olds in Britain. This was Shanae’s first experience of competing at this level, and she held her nerve to compete so well in such a strong field of gymnasts. Shanae trains twenty hours a week at Fenland Gymnastics Academy in Wisbech, as part of the elite squad with head coach Claire Stock, and is now looking forward to learning some new skills to build her routines up for September, when she will try to qualify for the voluntary national finals.

Walking Whittlesey
– by Chris Urlwin
Y
ou may have seen them, a group of a dozen or more, mainly aged fifty plus, striding through Whittlesey of a Thursday morning. They would be, for the want of a better word, The Whittlesey Walking Group. They don't really have a name, they are just a bunch of people who get together once a week for a walk!
The group came about originally over ten years ago as an initiative by Fenland District Council under the auspices of the national Walking for Health scheme. At the outset two people were employed to plan, organise, co-ordinate, and lead the group. One of those was the ever-energetic Lynn Curry who, although funding stopped after about two years, is still planning, organising, co-ordinating and leading, for the past few years on a completely voluntary basis. The health benefits of walking are well documented and joining a regular group acts as an incentive to get out and do it. Planning to go for a walk alone can be difficult, where to go? How long will it take? Most of the walks are about three miles long and take about an hour. The pace is steady, they are not arduous, but it is a walk, not an amble. They start from the Manor Leisure Centre at 10am and usually make their way out into one of the country areas that surround Whittlesey. In winter they tend to keep to the streets as the country paths can be Top image: Lynn Curry (centre in green) with some of the walkers

hazardous. Lynn has twenty risk assessed one-and-a half-mile walks available to her, and by combining two of them at a time she can create many different routes. Participants will not be confronted with going the same way time after time. Most weeks there are between 12 and 15 walkers, who come from all walks of life, comprising couples, active halves of couples, and those living alone. These walks offer the opportunity to get out amongst amiable and friendly people in the fresh air for an hour every week, while getting valuable exercise at the same time. Some participate in other longer walks, for others an hour a week is all they want to do. Many enjoy a chat along the way, while others prefer to just walk. They are not an exclusive group, and anyone is welcome to join. It is very relaxed and informal, with just a simple health questionnaire to complete prior to taking part. For practical reasons dogs and buggies cannot be accepted. If you want to know more, please contact Lynn on 01733 204286. Happy walking! JUNE 2018

Finance
Why Save in a Pension? by Eamonn Dorling
Sometimes people say that they don’t believe in pensions; it is not as if they are created to be believed in, but that’s what they say! What they usually mean is that they do not like the idea of paying in to an arrangement that does not provide immediate benefits. Even stone age communities knew the value of putting some of the harvest aside in times of plenty for later in the year when food would be in short supply. In modern times enlightened employers would set up an arrangement that would look after loyal workers in their dotage. The Government recognises that an individual that is encouraged to make their own provision for retirement is less likely to fall back on the State for help, so they provide incentives to make provision. Firstly, by giving tax relief on contributions, secondly allowing investments to operate within a tax efficient environment and thirdly to allow a significant proportion to be extracted tax free. There are other potential tax savings that can relate to special situations like advanced estate planning, purchasing commercial assets that might be used within a business and some capital gains exemptions that are beyond the scope of this piece. There are other ways of preparing for retirement that usually carry high engagement costs or are potentially at a high risk of failure. For maximum flexibility and control over the timing of taking benefits, a conventional modern pension arrangement that is adequately funded and managed by a specialist that understands
your requirements and circumstances can be a much more efficient and understandable solution. If you already have plans, but do not fully understand the options available to you – it is best to take independent financial advice because if you make a wrong decision you have to live with it for all your retirement. Reducing tax leaves more for you, if you need help contact me for a free initial consultation. ■ Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Don’t Become the Victim of a Scammer If a stranger knocked on your door and said he was from the Inland Revenue and that you were due a £500/£1000/£3000 tax rebate but that he needed your bank account details and the three-digit verification code from the rear of your card, would you give it to him or her? Of course not. You would probably slam the door in their face and then make a phone call to the Police for good measure. Alternatively, what if another stranger knocked on your door and told you that you are having problems with your internet connection (and who doesn’t have problems with their internet connection at times!) but that he/she would have to come in, sit down at your computer and ‘make some changes’ to resolve your problem. Once again, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t allow them in. However, if you were to receive an email made up to ‘look’ like it was from BT/Sky/Virgin/TalkTalk/ HMRC it would amaze you to learn just how many people respond to these emails with all the information they need to raid your bank account. The other version of this scam is when you receive a phone call asking for the same information and they ‘need access to your laptop’ to fix the problem. The REALLY savvy people just hang up on the caller, because they realise that their service provider would NEVER do this and, more importantly, would NEVER need access to your computer. Some people that think they are savvy in these things say ‘OK, but I’ll call you back’. When they hang up the phone the caller stays on the line, passes it to another person and when you ‘call’ your service provider they just ‘pretend’ to answer the phone and continue the conversation from where it was left off. As part of their ‘help’ they will install some software which allows them full control over your computer. This usually includes some tracking software, some virus software and, rather than spend the time hunting your computer for the information they want, they will then charge a small ‘fee’, obtain your card/ bank details and, immediately, you are a few hundred pounds lighter. In fact, in some of the cases I have seen in recent weeks people have had ‘£thousands’ taken from their bank account and in a large number of cases, the account has
been emptied of all monies. This is the point the bank realises something is wrong. You then have the inconvenience of stopping your cards, paying to have your computer ‘cleaned’ of everything they have installed – when all you had to do was ignore the mail in the first place. Finally, what I find especially sad is the people who really are unaware of these types of scams and just blithely provide the information requested. So, if you think you know someone who is unaware of these scams then do, please, cut this out and pass it on to them with an explanation.

Pets’ Corner
We’ve Moved!
– by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre For the past few years, the doors to the Hero of Aliwal pub on the road out of Whittlesey towards Ramsey, had been kept shut. 'Last orders' had well and truly been called. And had it not been for more and more people of Whittlesey and surrounding areas bringing their lovely pets to see our veterinary surgeons, forcing us to look for bigger premises, the old pub might still be empty and unloved. The combination of solicitors, banks and the planning department made the acquisition of the building, a long drawn out affair. But once the keys had been handed over, the new owners got the 'bit between their teeth' and the dust started flying. As a lot of you may know, the practice is owned by a couple from Spain who have lived and worked in England for many years. Cere, the vet whose vision the practice was, and her partner Carlos, an IT specialist, opened their first practice in Broad Street in 2013 which has grown year on year necessitating the move. Local builder Gary Laird was enlisted in heading up the transformation (not sure he really knew what he was letting himself in for) and with that, the ceilings were demolished. There was straw, dust, cinder and ash, lathe and plaster flying everywhere. Along with the mess there were also some lovely finds – if you like that sort of thing! Some very old beams, cast iron fireplaces and even a lost room in the eaves was uncovered... very exciting. Carlos was at the renovation every day and was enlisted by Gary to help. Being an IT man with no previous experience of building, he wondered what had hit him, but duly got well and truly stuck in. He ended up doing jobs that he never previously knew existed, even to the extent that he was catching bricks like a professional thrown to him by another worker, and almost chopped the end of his finger off when he got it trapped. You don't have those problems in IT!
room for post-op checks and where the nurses can do dental, weight loss and behaviours’ clinics. We have a large preparation area with one of the theatres, digital X-ray, dispensary and a full equipped lab leading from it. There is another theatre where operations such as orthopaedic surgery can take place, separate dog and cat wards, isolation and a laundry room. We even have a quiet room for clients when they sadly have to say goodbye to their beloved pets. Upstairs we have two offices, staff room, and most importantly.... a staff dog room so that staff that do long hours can bring their dogs to work with them. Another very important aspect of the new premises is a large car park at the front of the building that is much more convenient for customers and their pets than before. We are planning to have an open day on June 16th between 10am-2pm, so that you can bring your pets to have a look around our shiny new premises, behind the scenes. For those of you that haven’t been to the new place or those of you that would just like a look around, we look forward to seeing many of you there.
Well, after all of the hard work, the new practice was opened on March 12th, 2018. We managed to move a few things a bit at a time beforehand, leaving the big important things until last, just in case they were needed for an emergency. Downstairs we now have a large waiting room/ reception area where we hope to be running some puppy classes soon. We have four air-conditioned consulting rooms, one of which is a nurse consult

JUNE 2018
The Local Music Scene
Meearsarealrite! - by Dave Bailey
This month we look at loud… “That TV’s very loud grandad,” an interesting quote from a current advert for hearing aids, but after too many years on the music scene to admit to, I count myself lucky to have adhered to my own advice with respect to LOUD speakers. The modern trend for rock seems to be either loud thrash or shout and often distorted. Previous articles have suggested that it is possible to set a sound system to be at a volume that achieves both the desired level and clarity. This assumes as an artist that the budget has been available to purchase a high-end powered PA capable of delivering that level at a mid-point within its operating range for the venue in which it is being used. To drive any PA near to the top of its range and ultimately the speakers with a full spectrum of sound – (drums, guitars, keyboard and vocals) – will often result in both distortion from the amplifier and in turn the speaker. Positioning on stage for the performers should also be based on both what is comfortable and to enable delivery of the parts as a performer you need to hear. Monitors have to provide the elements of the accompaniment required to enable you to keep those parts you are either singing or playing in both tune and time with the rest of the band or backing track. This should also include foldback, the monitoring of your own parts. Standing in front of the main speakers is only going to provide a compromise for both you and your audience as it will be the final mix and usually at too high a level to identify your J U NE 2 0 1 8
own performance from the whole. This hopefully will defuse the “I can play louder than you” competition between band members. Although individual monitors, whether floor speakers or in-ear for each performer, is the ideal solution, it is often impractical with some stage/ performance areas or beyond the technical capabilities of the equipment used. Ideally a monitor for the vocalist is essential and possibly a shared monitor for backing vocals. With careful positioning of the back line for any instrument amplifiers alleviating the need for guitar monitors. In-ear monitors can also reduce the overall sound level whilst providing the correct balance for each performer with a flat response, whilst reducing the need for a floor filled with foldback speakers and provide a stable acoustic control over feedback from microphones. Whichever solution is adopted the need to protect the ears from spikes of sound and levels that could ultimately cause hearing loss and or tinnitus (permanent ringing in the ears) is essential. Gigging musicians who regularly perform at high sound levels should invest in a good set of earplugs to attenuate the overall volume whilst cutting these damaging spikes. Safety experts have used the term ‘acoustic shock’ mainly produced by drums and cymbals, which can over long periods of exposure cause significant hearing loss. “What’s that grandad? The best it’s ever sounded”... Local open mic listings can be found at www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm

The Explorers were chosen after putting themselves forward for a selection weekend which involved physical and mental tasks that examined their problem solving, teamwork and leadership skills. The World Scout Jamboree is the largest camping event organised by the Scout Movement, gathering as many as 50,000 Scouts and leaders from more than 200 countries. It will be hosted in West Virginia, United States in July 2019.

SALDANCE THEATRE ARTS 4Oth Birthday Celebrations It is quite amazing to think that it has been four decades since Saldance was first established. On returning from professional careers which took them around the world founders Sally and John Dennis started providing dance tuition in Peterborough and several of the local surrounding areas. The classes were so successful they were able to open the doors to their very own studios in 1992 and were thrilled to see the business bloom. Nicola Storton, a student of Sally from an early age became principal in 2006 and now examines for the International Dance Teachers Association alongside running the school. The dedicated team of teaching staff is completed by Kym Coles, also a student of Sally for many years and Rhoda Kuc. All teachers hold fellowships with the I.D.T.A in the wide range of subjects on offer and are proud
to see the school continuing and evolving, with happy students flourishing in the professional and caring environment provided. Aside from the excellent dance tuition which has provided many students with the foundations to gain places at top vocational schools and indeed pursue professional careers, one of the best things about Saldance is the happy family vibe which leads to lifelong friendships and connections. It is lovely to see just how far the Saldance family extends. Many of ‘Miss Sally’s’ original students now take their children and even grandchildren to lessons, some of the adult students are familiar faces returning after further education and then there are those that stay forever! Visit www.saldance.co.uk if you would be interested in joining the family or for information about the studios next open day.

Church Matters
In Praise of our Churchwardens Each of our parish churches has two churchwardens. They are elected annually to serve as officers of the bishop and representatives of the people. Churchwardens have a duty to represent the people and co-operate with the vicar. They have important legal duties and equally important spiritual, pastoral and mission responsibilities. These make them foremost among the people of the church. They set an example in ministry, in commitment to regular worship and in seeking to witness to their Lord and God. They are expected to lead the parishioners by setting a good example and encouraging unity and peace. They have a particular duty to maintain order and peace in the church and churchyard at all times, and especially during services. They are legally responsible with the vicar for all the property and movable goods belonging to a parish church. They have a duty to keep an upto-date record of the property and an inventory of items within the church and to produce these lists for inspection in case of a visitation by the archdeacon or his/her representative.
When there is no vicar due to a vacancy the churchwardens ensure that a minimum number of church services continue to be held in the parish, and in particular that the Eucharist continues to be celebrated every Sunday and on every principal feast. To be elected to the office of churchwardens a person must be: 1 baptised in the name of the Holy Trinity, i.e. Father, Son and Holy Spirit 2 at least 21 years old 3 on the electoral role of the parish 4 someone who receives Holy Communion on a regular basis They serve for a period of one year and then may stand for election again. Many churchwardens hold office for a number of years. This is important as they gain knowledge and experience with which to support the people and clergy in their roles. We are very grateful to David, Sarah, Sue, Ken, Rosemary, Paul, Elizabeth and Alan, our churchwardens, for the time and effort they freely give to their parish – its people, congregations and churches. On behalf of us all in Whittlesey, Pondersbridge and Coates – THANK YOU. God bless you all from Nigel and Staffan
WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH
Should the Church Change? I’m frequently asked this question.
From the moment of birth everyone confronts the concept of change. Without it, nappy sales would sky rocket, schools would close and industry grind to halt. The nation would run out of money as noone would be old enough to work or do anything for themselves. Children would become selfish as parents failed to teach them to play their part in the smooth running of the family home. I still recall my parents constantly reminding me, ‘I was not a baby anymore, and they were not prepared to keep doing everything for me.’ While that was tough, it did not mean they had stopped loving me. There is nothing wrong with change, providing important, fundamental values do not become eroded. In respect of churches, it’s the value of real Christianity including – ‘being a light that shines
through and dispels the darkness in the world and people’s lives and becoming a true reflection of who Jesus really is.’ Because the nature of that darkness changes through the generations, so THE WAY the church shines that light must also change. Without it we become irrelevant to society. As the senior pastor of a growing church involved in the community, one of the challenges I face is maintaining the balance between the church playing an effective part in meeting the practical challenges within our community, while not doing so at the expense of the spiritual message of the church. Most of the time I think we get this right, but when we get it wrong, we readily change. The church should always be different, but that difference must be relevant to inspiring society to find faith, hope, and love within its walls, especially in times of darkness. If you’ve never visited us, why not do so – you may be surprised?

School News
Jonathan Martin concluded: “As the premier youth event in the Peterborough 900 celebrations this would be a fitting way for schools to show their support for both the history and the future of our city.” Lyrics and more details are available online at www.ymcatrinitygroup.org.uk/youth-jam/ In addition to Youth Jam 18’s performances there will be a whole range of activities and stalls around the square including careers advice, further education options, community organisations, volunteering opportunities and arts & crafts For more details please contact Verity Swinscoe, Marketing Officer via email verity.swinscoe@ ymcatrinity.org.uk or call 01733 373188. JOIN IN YOUTH JAM 18 Local schools are being encouraged to take part in YMCA Trinity Group’s Youth Jam 18. The event, which will take place from 10am5pm on Saturday, July 21st in Cathedral Square, Peterborough, is aimed at the whole family, and will showcase young people aged five-25 from across the area as they dance, sing and play in a celebration of talent that is set to kick start the summer holidays. The Big Lottery funded event is organised by YMCA Trinity Group and The Cresset in conjunction with Peterborough Celebrates. More than 25 acts have been booked so far with performances including live music, dance and theatre from many of the city’s schools and groups including Peterborough Regional College and Wildcats Theatre School. Jonathan Martin, CEO of YMCA Trinity Group, said: “We’re delighted to have had such a positive response to Youth Jam. I am a little in awe of the talented young people we have in our city and it is a pleasure to give them a stage on which to show off their skills and hard work.” The main performance slots are now filled but schools and groups can still be involved by signing up to be part of the day’s grand finale. YMCA Trinity Group is gathering the voices of 900 young people singing along to Boy George’s version of the classic YMCA song. Schools and groups can either join the performance on the day, supply a video of children singing along during an assembly, or they could even do both! 66

PARK LANE POETS KS2 children from Park Lane Primary & Nursery School have celebrated their annual Shannon Corr poetry competition for the fourth year. The children were reminded about ‘My Blue Heart’; a charity that Shannon first introduced to Park Lane and one that supports bereaved families. Year 6 children have already been working hard behind the scenes to support this charity and to help fund the awards for this important memorial competition. Sarah Gregory, Year 5 teacher at Park Lane, said: “We were very pleased to welcome Shannon’s parents into school to present the top three poets with their rewards. “This year our poems were judged by Mr Adams, our very own published author and both he and Shannon’s parents were very impressed with the standard of the winning entries.” JUNE 2018
WHEN IT ALL FEELS LIKE TOO MUCH… With the exam period upon us, many young people may be feeling a sharp spike in their stress and anxiety levels. It’s very common to feel stressed around exam time, with young people feeling there’s a huge amount of pressure on them to do well, or anxious that they can’t fit in all the revision. They might worry they’re going to fail or they won't get the grades they need for the course or job they want and that their whole future depends on it. The build up to results day can also leave them feeling overwhelmed and run down. Although a certain level of stress can be healthy, as it can be a motivator to knuckle down and get the job done, exam stress can be counterproductive when it gets out of hand and can have a
J U NE 2 0 1 8
tremendously negative impact on a young person’s overall health and well-being. A recent survey of 1000 teenagers taking exams this summer showed 78 percent expect exam stress to have a negative impact on their appearance, health or mental state in some way during the period, with many eating more, or less than usual, one in ten not having time to shower or change their clothes and one in five not leaving the house for days. Stress will even cause some teens to sit alone in the dark in angst, whereas others may show signs of anger. Having someone available when they need them can make a huge difference to a young person during this period, as bottling up stress and trying to deal with it on their own may make the stress worse. It can really help to talk. Here at the Young Peoples Counselling Service we provide a free, confidential counselling service for 11-16-year-olds across the Peterborough area. anxiety and learning became major issues, it was truly heart-breaking to see Liam in such distress. “Naturally we were all very concerned and wanted to help Liam but for Liam's grandad it had a much greater significance, he too had suffered very similar experiences when he was a child. “Grandad is a very determined character and problem solver, being retired with time on his hands it gave him the opportunity to do lots of research in our quest to help Liam.” She added that the research soon lead to Autism as a possible cause for Liam's issues and after many months and many hurdles in 2017 it was finally diagnosed that Liam had Autistic Spectrum Disorder (Asperger’s).
FAMILY DUO’S COAST-TO-COAST CHARITY CYCLE TRIP
A young Ramsey Asperger’s sufferer is planning an epic coast-to-coast cycling trip to raise money for the Autism Research Trust. Liam Rayment (8) will cycle with his grandad David Thorburn from Whitehaven, Cumbria to Roker, Sunderland, a distance of 135 miles. Starting on Wednesday, June 27th they will cycle around 35 miles per day travelling through the Lake District, the Pennines and Durham Dales, finishing on Saturday, June 30th. The route, which will involve 10,500ft of climbing, will raise funds to support research conducted at the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University. The duo will be supported on the trip by Liam’s mum Gemma and nana Mary. Gemma said: “Autism can be a very difficult thing to accept, understand or talk about for individuals and families who are affected and we as a family want to raise awareness, help research and offer support. “We first started to notice things about Liam when he was very young, fear of certain noises (church bells, aeroplanes flying over etc), his speech development was late and when he started school 68
D I S C O V E R I N G
Whittlesea
It was during his research into Asperger’s that David began to notice more and more things that he could relate to and offered answers to the many problems he had faced throughout his life, every time he read something about Asperger’s it was like reading his own personal profile. It was soon very clear that he too had Asperger’s and so it was that he set about getting an assessment to confirm his own diagnosis, 18 months later in March 2018 he got the official diagnosis. Gemma added: “Liam and grandad share a very special relationship, they are like best buddies which we all thought was just shared interests and the usual stuff that grandads and grandsons do but now it's clear that the common thread is Asperger’s. “Although they have differences in character they can relate to each other in so many ways and grandad is able to offer guidance and support to both Liam and the family using his life experiences and knowledge of Asperger’s.” David (61) has been a keen cyclist for many years and completed a solo cycle ride from Land’s End to John O'Groats in 2016 so the coast to coast is well within his capabilities but for Liam who is new to long distance cycling the challenge will be huge both physically and mentally. If you would like to donate please log-on to their JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/LiamandGrandad You can also follow their story via JustGiving, Facebook & Twitter.

BOWLS CLUB RAISES MONEY FOR MAGPAS
Whittlesey Manor Bowls Club has presented a £360 cheque to Magpas which means it has now raised more than £3000 for the medical charity from the last four Peter Bavister Memorial charity triples tournaments. The cheque was handed over to Magpas representative Phil Hayes by Peter’s widow Margaret, who was accompanied by her daughter and son-in-law Sue and Martin Welsford. Magpas will again be the beneficiaries from this year's tournament which takes place on Saturday, September 8th.
LYNN’S TRIPLE CELEBRATION Lion Lynn Palmer, of Whittlesey and District Lions Club, has been given three awards in three weeks to mark her charitable work in the community. Lynn received an international president’s appreciation award from past international director Lion Clifford Heywood from New Zealand and District Governor Derek Prior, at a recent Lions convention in Norwich. She is also pictured receiving the Whittlesey Citizen of the Year Award from Whittlesey Mayor councillor Ralph Butcher. To make it a triple celebration, her husband Steve, the Whittlesey Lions president, presented her with the president’s appreciation award for all the hard work she has done for the community and Whittlesey Lions.
LIONS’ CHARITY GOLF DAY Whittlesey Lions has held its annual charity golf day. This year’s event – held at Ramsey – was to raise funds for Fens Disabled Bowls Association and Sports Hub, Whittlesey. Whittlesey Lions president Steve Palmer said that although the golf course was waterlogged everyone had an enjoyable day and £600 was raised. Steve presented the trophy to the winning team, Fen Tigers of Ramsey, and at a later date handed over a cheque to Ray Hunt, the Whittlesey organiser of Fens Disabled Bowls, who said he was very grateful to the Lions for the kind donation and that the money will be used to provide new equipment. J U NE 2 0 1 8
Lynn joined the Lions in 1994/5 and has held most positions within the club, being president on three occasions, secretary twice, and fund-raising, social and welfare chairman as well as zone chairman. She is also the organiser of the Lions’ largest fund raiser, the Santa float, which regularly raises in the region of £4500 to £5000, and once raised £600 for EACH by jumping out of an aeroplane to skydive. Vice chairman of Whittlesey Christmas lights committee, Lynn does all this while suffering from a medical condition. Her husband Steve said: “Lynn suffers from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Fatigue Syndrome (ME). If she overdoes things, she will get seriously tired and have to spend three or more days in bed to recover.”
