Introduction

Welcome to Your July Issue. Inside Highlights

Summer is traditionally the season when many home owners look to move – and I am no exception.

4..................The Deepings Caravan Park

After living in our house for the past 23 years, my wife and I decided that with the kids having left home it was time for us – and our dog – to go to pastures new.

9..................BusFest Highlights

10................Whittlesey Osteopaths

Apparently, moving is one of the most stressful things you can do... and I concur! We have been spending the past few weeks frantically de-cluttering our home in preparation for our move to a smaller abode.

12................March Podiatry

14................Steve Barclay MP

A visit to the loft failed to uncover any Rembrandts or Picassos, merely a lot of old junk, clothes and broken furniture, which were hastily despatched to the skip.

18................Eat the Season: Broad Beans 22-23......Community Matters

Of course, there were some long forgotten treasures discovered; mainly old vinyl records I bought when I was younger and considered myself relatively cool and masses of hardback books covering my twin interests of sport and history. These were saved from the skip along with family photographs and keepsakes, but ruthlessness was the order of the day and I’ve vowed not to clutter up our new home… well not immediately.

34...............Legal Advice from Fraser Dawbarns

With local schools breaking up for the summer, most families turn their attention to having a well-deserved holiday.

38...............Puzzle Page

This normally coincides with road chaos for those who holiday in the UK and airport misery for those who plan to jet off abroad.

40-41.......Business & Community Fayre 44...............Holly Jean

Delays at airports or the Channel Tunnel due to sudden strikes or just the sheer volume of holidaymakers making their annual pilgrimage can set the scene for the whole holiday.

50...............Spotlight: Cam Sight

51................Finance with Eamonn Dorling

The secret is to try and stay calm and not to dwell on the problems you may encounter so that you can make the best of your summer break, which let’s face it, is invariably over too soon. If you are planning your annual holiday, I wish you good luck and a safe stress-free journey.

REVELLERS ENJOY A CLASSIC DAY OUT AT BUSFEST Fenland BusFest made a triumphant return to Whittlesey with a superb array of vehicles from all parts of the UK. Vintage, restored and modern vehicles took part in the event which saw buses transporting visitors around the local countryside, taking in a number of local towns and villages. BusFest, held on Buttercross Square, is one of the area’s largest vintage vehicle gatherings and this year the organisers increased the frequency of free bus trips to Peterborough, Ramsey, Thorney and March via Turves. The buses were used to attend the Fenland Classic Car Show at Ramsey which proved a major attraction with more than 70 classic cars and vehicles. The show featured all ages of classic cars from Volkswagen Beetles to American muscle cars, with exhibitors coming from all over East Anglia.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better

W

Body Unity

hen we consider a human body we commonly see the skeleton (i.e. bones) as the structural core with all the other tissue surrounding it. But is this really the scaffolding which knits everything together? If the bone were the scaffolding, then should we not be able to recognise a person from their skeleton alone? The common person would find it difficult to differentiate a female from a male skeleton whilst an expert would be able to identify an approximate age and gender but little more. However, if we were to remove every piece of tissue with the exception of our blood vessels, you would have enough detail to recognise your family member or friend. The same is true of our nerves. When we consider our development within the womb, the nervous systems are the first to arrive on the scene in week two. The blood system (i.e. blood vessels and heart) and the embryonic tissue that will form our muscles/bones (termed mesoderm) arrives together in week four. The nervous system will dominate the growth of the embryo for the first six weeks, thereafter the other tissues grow outwards together influencing each other as they progress. In general, we can describe this interaction as the mesodermal cells multiplying outwards and sucking/ dragging the blood vessels and nerves with them. In this way they (blood vessels and nerves) become embedded in the developing tissue to such an extent that no cell is a cell width away from a blood vessel or nerve! In addition, due to the

tensile strength of the blood vessels and nerves, they provide resistance to the growth thus influencing the overall shape of the muscle or bone. In this way the blood vessels and nerves form a scaffold throughout the body which gives our muscles/bones a unified strength. When we consider the reach of our blood vessels and nerves it begs the question, “What are the consequences of dysfunction in these systems?. In a world where stress and anxiety are high can we be certain that these abnormalities are confined to the nervous system alone? In a world where blood pressure is commonly high, can we be certain that this is just a problem for the cardiovascular system alone?

News

JULY NEWS & UPDATES - By Steve Barclay MP

T

his year sees the celebration of 70 years of the National Health Service and as Minister of State for Health, July 5th, 2018 is a hugely important milestone across the NHS family.

Over the last 70 years, the NHS has transformed the health and wellbeing of the nation by delivering huge medical advances and improvements to public health. It is thanks to the NHS that we have all but eradicated diseases such as polio and diphtheria, and pioneered new treatments like the world’s first liver, heart and lung transplants. The NHS is the UK’s largest employer, with over 1.5 million staff from all over the world and more than 350 different careers. None of the achievements over the past 70 years would be possible without the skill, dedication and compassion of NHS staff, as well as the many volunteers, charities and communities that support the service. This year has seen my Read to Succeed Campaign go from strength to strength. Now in its third year, it is fantastic that local businesses, councillors and residents continue to support local school children so generously. I first launched the campaign in 2016, after teachers raised their concerns that many children did not read during the summer

holidays resulting in a dip in literacy skills after they returned from the summer break. The initiative, supported by the Bishop of Ely, teachers and businesses, ensures that every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire can have a new book to take home and treasure during the summer holidays. Year 4 was chosen as this is the age when children often begin to read more independently. I am pleased to report that last year, Cambridgeshire Libraries saw a 50 percent increase in children starting the Summer Reading Challenge – where children have to read a book a week over the six-week break – following our campaign.

Summer, across our constituency, is a busy time for fetes, fayres and galas. These only happen due to the hard work of the many local volunteers. A big thank you to everyone who helps out, and I look forward to seeing you at one of the many events I will be visiting over the summer. With two young children you will probably see me in the queue for the face painter!

Slash each breast in a couple of places, then place in a dish with the olive oil, half the lemon zest and juice, and the garlic. Season well and leave to marinate for 10-15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Bring a pan of water to the boil, add the mint sprig and blanch the broad beans for 2-3 minutes until tender. Drain, discard the mint and refresh under cold water, then drain again. You can slip each broad bean from its outer shell, if you like. Whisk the rest of the lemon zest and juice with the extra-virgin olive oil, season and drizzle over the beans. Crumble in the feta and stir it through, along with the mint leaves. Set aside. Heat a frying pan over a high heat and quickly brown the chicken breasts until both sides are golden, then transfer to a roasting tin and roast for 5-10 minutes until cooked. Serve immediately, sliced in half, with the minted broad beans and feta.

often be seen marching at evening events where they use more than 300 coloured bulbs placed strategically on parts of their uniform. Their uniforms are very distinctive, consisting of red tunics (Grenadier Guard Style), white trousers with a red stripe (male and female), bearskin type hats, white Sam Browne belts, white socks and black shoes. Band members range from nine years of age upwards and are trained how to march. They are taught to drill with a replica rifle and to play any band instrument of their choice if they so wish. The instruments consist of trumpets, euphoniums, baritones, saxophones, slide trombones, tenor horns, bell lyres, side drums, tenor drums, cymbals and bass drum. They play a varied repertoire of music including popular tunes and are famed for their ‘Dambusters sequence’.

TOY SOLDIERS MARCH IN TO FESTIVAL Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers have been added to the performers appearing at this year’s Whittlesey Festival. If you haven’t done so already, the date to ensure is in your calendar is Sunday, September 9th, when the festival will take place from 10am-4pm. The town centre and surrounding streets and buildings will once again be buzzing with excitement and fun as the crowds enjoy the music and entertainment programme and vast array of stalls and activities planned for the day. In last month’s issue we featured one of the headline acts, The Pearly King and Queen and their band, Cockney Pride. This month the organisers have announced that, as well as the Peterborough Highland Band, who are a popular, regular part of the festival, the Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers Marching Band will also be performing on the day. The Toy Soldiers are a registered charity and members of the Carnival Bands Association. They were formed in 1936 and perform at events all around the country where they are well known for their arena displays and processions. They can 22

Festival organisers say there is truly something for everyone at the festival, no matter what age you are. This year the organisers have launched ‘sponsorship’ opportunities for those businesses, organisations or individuals who wish to support specific areas of the festival be it a fairground ride, an activity, a particular performance or other aspects. There are different levels of sponsorship available with bronze, silver or gold packages all offering fantastic benefits. If you would like further information about this or anything else in relation to the festival, please contact Brian Smithyman on 01733 752093 or email brians@whittlesey.cc or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005.

Home Interiors

Recycle with Flair – by Interior Designer & Writer, Yasmin Chopin Broadway Market teems with parents and pushchairs seeking a free spot on the pavement to drink a cappuccino. Number seven has a somewhat dour, grey painted frontage, but the large window is colourfully displayed with fabrics and graffiti style art. Shop owner Barley Massey told me their busiest day is Sunday and having recently decided to brush up my sewing skills I was there to learn. I and half-a-dozen other ladies spent the day collecting tips and trying out the machines. I perhaps wouldn’t have shared this with you had it not been for the thrilling basement conversion. It’s the sort of thing that rocks my boat and I thought you might be interested to see how the clever use of recycled materials can liven up an interior. The eclectic modern look makes visitors feel relaxed and while we were sewing downstairs, Barley’s partner upstairs in the shop kept up the tempo with his choice playlist of jazz music. Barley shared tips and tricks for making clothes from leftover fabrics and precious secondhand finds. Tips like, use safety pins instead of pins when making adjustments as they stay in and don’t stab you. Simple logic, but I’d never thought of it. When we stopped for lunch she told me about the shop, how it has been a life’s work to develop the building from a rundown retail space to the vibrant place it is now. She has worked hard and employed her own creative and youthful style in the renovation. For instance, gentlemen’s neckties make a long stripy curtain beneath the workbench and reclaimed tiles form a bright backdrop. It reminded me that we shouldn’t always look for new; it is too easy to succumb to manufacturers’ advertising overtures. Sometimes it is better to rifle through the leftovers and buy second-hand because it allows your creativity to shine through, and you can be assured your home, and indeed your clothes, will be unique.

Fabrications is at 7 Broadway Market, London, E8 4PH. Classes in textile recycling are run by Barley Massey. Photo credits: Yasmin Chopin

VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR PLANNED WHITTLESEY PARK RUN

“So, I am asking for lots of volunteers from the community of Whittlesey to continue the setup procedure and get this event started and operating each week.

Plans are afoot to launch a park run in Whittlesey. Geoff Howes, a member of Thorney Running Club, is looking for volunteers to help marshal the regular runs which are planned for Saturday mornings at the Manor Leisure Centre park. The park run will involve one small lap (500m) and three large laps (1500m each) of the park to make up 5k and will be held each Saturday at 9am. Participants can either walk or run and there will be no charge for taking part. He said: “It will be a free event and will be part of the growing number of park runs which take place across the UK and in many other countries. Currently the nearest park runs are at March and Ferry Meadows, Peterborough. “I am planning to start the park run in July or August this year. To get started we need an event and run directors and at least 12 volunteers each week to marshal and assist. Volunteers will be present from 8.15am until 10am to marshal the event, help put out the signs and assist at the finish. 28

“Volunteers would not be expected to attend every Saturday. Volunteers need not be members of a running club or runners themselves but need to be enthusiastic to help to bring this nationwide event into our community. I am planning to make it an enjoyable and exciting community event, with volunteers and runners having breakfast or coffee in the town afterwards – it will be my aim to make this event for residents of Whittlesey and the surrounding area, but we would welcome visitors to the town.” Geoff says he has had initial approval for the course from Fenland District Council and is hopeful that Fenland Active will help with the set-up charges. If members of the community or friends would like to become involved, please indicate this on the new Facebook group called Whittlesey parkrun, or email Geoff Howes at whittleseyparkrun@aol.com

SWING AND JAZZ EVENING For one night only, historic Imperial War Museum Duxford will host a 1940s Hangar Dance, transforming the AirSpace Conservation Hall into a wartime dance hall with the stunning backdrop of iconic aircraft. On Saturday, July 21st in the Conservation Hall, AirSpace exhibition, The Galaxy Big Band will be performing swing classics throughout the evening accompanied by The Apple Blossoms, an all-female vocal trio specialising in 1940s close harmony singing. Their musical repertoire spans the decades from the Andrews Sisters to Beyoncé and beyond, giving modern songs a vintage twist as well as revitalising the classics. Formed in 1999, the Galaxy Big Band is one of the country's leading big bands, performing at vintage and jazz events around the UK. Guests are encouraged to embrace the style of the 1940s and dress vintage to impress, as they will be following in the footsteps of revellers at Duxford during the Second World War, when the theatre hangar hosted cinema screenings, roller-blading, boxing matches and ENSA (Entertainment National Service Association) concerts as well as dances.

As a nation of garden lovers, we Brits are increasingly turning our outdoor spaces into extensions of our homes; cosy corners to relax in, barbecue areas for alfresco dining, and play dens for the children. Splashing out on making our gardens look great can mean spending a small fortune on lighting, furniture, ornaments, plants and even wall art. But while most of us ensure our house alarm is switched on, doors locked and a light left on when the house is empty, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security? Brighter days and longer weekends present more opportunity for mowing lawns, pottering in the garden, allowing the children to play outdoors and spending time with friends and family … and a chance for thieves to strike! According to the Crime Prevention website, garden crime has risen to about a million reports a year. Thieves will resort to stealing just about anything from the garden, from lawn mowers and expensive tools to fish from the pond and even newly-laid turf! However, we can all take some simple precautions to protect the garden and possessions against greenfingered thieves, particularly during weekends or summer holidays when the home is empty. • Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief - an unlocked back gate or shed, (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools/machinery or bikes). • Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds. • Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home. • CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcome activity from your home. • Install some sensory/outdoor lighting. • Alarm the garage to provide additional security, or think about installing garage roller shutter doors. • If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. • If you are going away, even for the weekend, lock any back or side gates or other entrances to the garden to limit access. • Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment. Even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves. • Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball. • Use a security pen to mark valuable items, like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode. • Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs. • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group, where you and your neighbours can look out for each other. Find your nearest group https://www.ourwatch.org.uk/ When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and/or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy. What Happens To Your Facebook Page After Your Death? BY REBEKAH CROCKFORD A legacy contact operates in similar ways to a trustee; they can make some changes to the account but cannot login to the account or delete any contacts. The steps to create a legacy contact are simple and can be done by the client from their own account.

When helping clients with a will, I am sometimes asked what will happen to their Facebook page in the event of their death. I have to respond that unless you have stated what you want, it is likely that nothing will happen. Your Facebook page will continue to exist just as it had while you were alive. A bigger issue is that most people don’t even ask, they consider what will happen to their assets, but give no serious consideration to their online life. A Facebook page doesn’t have monetary value, but it does have sentimental value to the family of the deceased client. These accounts typically contain hundreds of personal pictures and messages which may be of comfort to those left behind when the client dies. Different people, however, will have different wishes about how they would like their page dealt with. Thankfully Facebook has put processes in place to deal with the mortality of its users. Providing the user has set up how they would like their page to be handled on their death, Facebook accounts of deceased relatives are fairly easy to deal with, Facebook allows either memorialising a deceased person’s account or deleting it outright. If the user requests memorialisation they will need to nominate someone to be their legacy contact.

If the client has died without leaving wishes as to what they want to happen to their account after death, it is also relatively easy for a friend or relative to memorialise or delete the account, the executor or a family member can contact Facebook with a copy of the death certificate. Difficulties could arise if family members have different wishes about what should happen. Some family members may wish to keep the account and feel unable to let go of the photos and content contained within and others may consider it too much like the deceased is alive and prefer that the page be deleted. Some clients decide to state in their will what they would like to happen to their account, but this can also cause problems. What happens if a client requests their account be memorialised in their will but later instructs Facebook to delete their account without changing their will? What if a close relative requests deletion contrary to the will? What if a client dies without leaving such instructions? These are all new situations for probate lawyers to consider, so to avoid as many of these problems as we can, I would suggest that the client either puts their desires in a letter of wishes or that they leave instructions to Facebook. Without knowing what the deceased would have preferred there are no clear answers as to what the protocol is. Perhaps all we can do is ask the family to consider what the deceased would have wanted.

Successful First Whittlesey Business and Community Fayre Photos courtesy of David Bailey

The very first Whittlesey Business and Community Fayre on behalf of the Whittlesey Business Forum has been held at the Manor Leisure Centre. Supported by Fenland District Council and sponsored by many of the local businesses in Whittlesey, the day proved to be a great success, with all entertainment and attractions free of charge. In the main hall, local businesses and organisations were able to showcase themselves and also a range of arts and crafts was on display and available for purchase. On the rear field, there was a stage kindly donated by Boons Transport for musicians to perform throughout the day that was also supported by Pino Soccio who kindly donated all of his fee to the Young Technicians foundation that supports youngsters wanting to learn and become sound engineers.

There was also a large selection of free attractions for the family supported by Ace Tones, including a bungee run, laser clay pigeon shooting, soft play, crazy golf, rodeo bull, high striker and other side stalls. Special thanks go to the members of the Whittlesey Business Forum and in particular Joe Jennings, Andy Armstrong, Jim Saunders, David Denson, Matt Hettle and Maria Boccia of Vesuvio that made this day possible and also the number of local businesses that kindly donated money to sponsor the event. Also, Mel Elliott of Dimension 6000 who organised all the musicians and arts and crafts. The day proved to be a great success and was well attended, and it is planned to make this an even bigger and better annual event for the town.

Well done Whittlesey!

Use Them or Lose Them - by Holly-Jean

B

anks - love them or hate them? The marmite of the adult world. Personally, I think they can be infuriating. Though doing a great service, they’re always busier than you’d like, there only ever seems to be one cashier serving people while the other avoids eye contact of those in the long line, and for some reason, banks are always ridiculously hot and stuffy! Some people have converted completely to an automated method of banking, and some would use nothing other than their local branch. But, love them or hate them, we still need them for basic things, such as paying cash in and general customer services. Branches are being closed all over our towns and villages, simply because they’re becoming less used due to online banking and the banks trying to save money where they can.

debate and controversy, but rather a community voice, in uproar about the shutting of their local banks. “Not everyone can or wants to bank online, please think of those loyal customers.” “Reducing these services whilst local transport is also declining is devastating for the elderly and people who can’t drive.” The majority of comments regarding the banks shutting were that people were worried about what will happen next. Where will these people have to go to pay money in and get it out? Will this complicate matters for other local businesses that may only accept cash? And also, not only will the closure be affecting those that use our local banks, but also those that work there.

Lucy Broadbent, aged 19, from Chatteris, addressed the fact that young people can be oblivious to these issues and so she stopped to discuss the banks closing with Mary Green, a retired nurse who worked in Doddington. Mary is petitioning against the closure of her local bank and spends a lot of time outside of it, with a sign saying, “Please do not close our Lloyds Bank in Chatteris”. She has lived in Chatteris for over fifty years and doesn’t want to see her friends and old patients, (who she still sees regularly around the area), suffer.

I can sit here and say, ‘Use it or lose it’ but, on the flip side, I do understand the frustration of using banks. They are slow - you can guarantee when you pop in, in a rush, there will be someone in front of you that wants to pay in what feels like £5,000 in coins and they need to re-count every penny. Don’t even get me started on those ‘paying in’ machines. You pile up a wad of cash for the thing to spit notes out in confusion because one is slightly folded on the corner. You can bet that you’ll walk in and have someone standing in a busy bank telling a cashier their life story. But, I guess that’s actually what makes them slightly special. The people that work at your local bank know you, they can talk about how your son’s doing and ask if you had a nice holiday. Now that’s something an app can’t do. Sure, an online bank will still know that you spent 75% of your wages on food, but it won’t know your name and ask how your day is, like someone behind the counter will.

Every local town around here has a ‘discussion page’ on Facebook. This can be a sea of controversy; it’s almost exciting to post on there to see what danger awaits, amongst argumentative comments. However, I set out to find out the opinions of other people in the local area and I posted on my local page. I was not met with

Unfortunately, if these banks are not being used, then they will have to close, and I’m hoping that maybe we can join the side of those who don’t want this, and try our best to use the local amenities. Next time you’re walking down the street, I really hope you can think of this article and do your best to support your local bank for people like Mary Green.

Young people, like myself, can be guilty of being oblivious to certain issues that affect the community. Local banks shutting will have a huge impact on everybody.

Cam Sight

– by Chris Urlwin

Sight Support is Here!

T

here are more than 7000 people in Cambridgeshire with vision impairment or blindness. Losing one's sight is a very scary business, and can lead to feelings of isolation, fear and depression, but there is an organisation in the county which is dedicated to helping people in that very difficult situation.

Cam Sight is a registered charity based in Wisbech, where staff are available to demonstrate various low vision aids, such as high-tech magnifiers, talking kitchen scales, and many other items that are marketed to help with low vision. They can also provide support and training to help with mobility and daily living skills, sport and leisure activities. For just over a year now they have been running monthly meetings in Whittlesey. Sight-impaired people get together to discuss their experiences, find out about the availability of additional services and activities in the Peterborough area, and generally feel less isolated and marginalised. Often there is a talk or presentation from an organisation that can be of interest to them. Information is available on what is available to help with poor vision and people can discuss vision aids that they may have found useful or otherwise. They are encouraged to share their experiences of dealing every day with poor sight or blindness, how they 50

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

have been able to overcome problems, and thus provide mutual support. Cam Sight supports people of all ages, their carers and families, and through their befriending scheme, helps people at home, who may be unable to get to the meetings. This could involve just calling in for a chat and cup of tea, helping with official documents, or going for a walk. The befrienders are volunteers, and Cam Sight would love to hear from anyone who feels that they could make a valuable contribution to the well-being of a sight-impaired person in this way. It could be a most rewarding experience for the befriender too. Full training and support is offered so that no-one need feel out of their depth participating in such a scheme. Another scheme which Cam Sight want to set up in the future is a tandem group, where sight-impaired people can enjoy the fun and fresh air of a cycle ride whilst on the back of a tandem with a sighted person at the front. There are many ways including fundraising where volunteers are needed. Cam Sight meets at the Black Bull in Whittlesey on the second Wednesday of every month from 10.30am until 12pm. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided. Currently there are about 10 members, but any person with sight impairment, of any age, their carer or family member is welcome – as too are guide dogs of course. For further information please contact the local organiser, Dawn Preston on 07535 634234 or email dawn@camsight.org.uk JULY 2018

Finance

Where to Get a Return on Surplus Savings? by Eamonn Dorling

It is difficult to get an interest rate that keeps pace with the rate of inflation nowadays. If you keep funds in a savings account, a medium to long term deposit, the average return is usually south of one percent. Even in government-backed premium ponds – the annual prize fund interest rate is currently 1.4%1. Keeping spare cash easily available is exactly the right thing for most people when the purpose is to provide an emergency fund that will smooth out the gap between income and expenditure (sometimes referred to as a ‘rainy day fund’). Often financial advisers recommend a multiple of average expenditure – for example three times monthly expenditure to be held in easily accessible cash funds. If you have more than this advice used to be the selection of a Cash ISA because the interest would not be taxed. This changed in April 2016 and interest on cash deposits is now paid gross (without a deduction of tax) and tax is only due when interest from all accounts exceeds £1000 for a basic rate tax payer or a non-taxpayer, and £500 for a higher rate taxpayer. In my experience there are few individuals receiving enough interest to concern themselves with paying any tax on interest earned from their bank and building society accounts – therefore the benefit of a Cash ISA is very limited. A more productive use of an Individual Savings Account (ISA) allowance (£20,000 in this tax

year 2018/19) might be to use it with more sophisticated investments that are more widely diversified in terms of underlying investments and have the potential to make real gains that need protecting from taxation. Recent analysis of international equity markets reveal that the American markets have generally performed well, the UK around the rate of inflation and some markets have fallen over the last 12 months (at time of writing). Therefore, a well diversified investment portfolio could be investing in a wide range of underlying asset classes across a wide geographic area – so as not to put all ‘your eggs in one basket’ because past performance is no guide to the future. A good Independent financial adviser will research all the funds matching your strategy for investing including the relevant timeline. If the rate of inflation is about 2.5%2 (it varies and may be measured in several ways). The return you might be looking for could be higher than this after any costs, check what you are getting and seek a review if you are not satisfied. www.nsandi.com/premium-bonds www.ons.gov.uk/economy/inflationandpriceindices/ timeseries/l55o/mm23 1 2

Technology

The New Version of Windows 10 - Problems and Solutions Very recently Microsoft issued a new version of Windows 10. It is called V1803 (March 2018), and is now being rolled out to most people’s computers. However, it has caused problems for many, many users. Issues range from Chrome not working correctly and/or hardware no longer working, e.g. microphones which are very easy to fix by reinstalling Chrome or reinstalling the driver for the non-working hardware. Major issues, though, include the computer creating a brand new account and making it look as if all documents/ pictures are missing, through to Windows 10 no longer working at all – the ‘whirligig of death’ where you only see a black spinning circle. If you are affected by this, in the majority of cases, your computer will need a fresh install of Windows to remedy the problem. However, there are things you can do to help yourself in the event of something happening to your Windows 10 installation – or any Microsoft installation.

Back-up Make sure your files are regularly backed up to a separate back-up disk. This is best done through the functions available in the ‘Control Panel’. Press the ‘Windows’ key on your keyboard and scroll through your apps and then click on ‘Windows System’, where the second app down will be Control Panel. Alternatively, if you have the ‘Cortana’ search window in your task bar, just type ‘Control Panel’ in the search bar and the desktop app will be offered to you, then press enter and this app will open. If you are seeing eight sections appearing, then within the ‘System and Security’ section choose Backup and Restore (Windows 7) – don’t worry,

this works perfectly fine for your Windows 10. You can now set up a full backup, or alternatively just create a ‘System Image’. A system image is, effectively, a ‘snapshot’ of your entire hard disk. It will contain all of your files as well as your operating system and can be used very easily to restore your disk back to normal as of the date of the backup. Finally, as part of the process to set this up, you can have Windows create backups on a weekly, or other basis, thereby ensuring you will never lose your precious pictures/files; nor your system.

Change Windows Update Settings Whenever Microsoft issues a major revision like the V1803, they always issue an updated version in the autumn. This will contain all the fixes to the problems caused by the first issue. So you can stop your computer updating as follows. Type ‘Windows Update’ in the Cortana search box in your task bar. This will take you to Windows Update settings, where you will chose Advanced Options. Then select ‘Choose When Updates Are Installed’ and select ‘Semi-Annual Channel’ – which means that it is ready for widespread use in organisations. Furthermore, within this section you can also defer the installation of both feature updates as well as quality updates. By following the above simple steps, should any form of major problem occur, including failure of your hard disk, you will have everything available to restore your computer back to normal operation very quickly. Hope this helps and happy computing! Deborah & Len

Preparing for Puppies – by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

Those first few weeks of your puppy’s life are crucial for them to become a well-adjusted adult. In the early weeks of a puppy's life they are naturally happy to investigate and form an image of the world, which they then use as a base to decide whether future encounters are normal or a threat to them. In a few weeks they will start to become wary of different things and act more cautiously. This is to their benefit in order to survive. If they continued to approach everything with no caution, they may well get into trouble at some point. During socialisation our puppies learn how to recognise and interact with the different species they will spend time with/encounter during their life and develop social attachments. For many of our dogs they are expected to be around a variety of species – people, other dogs, cats, horses, small mammals e.g. pet rabbits etc. therefore developing the social skills required. Learning how to behave appropriately around these different species is what socialisation is all about. You may be asking what about all the other things they need to get used to, like traffic, noises, household appliances etc? This is a different process called habituation, where our puppies become familiar with the many different types of environment they will encounter through their life – learning that the many things they encounter are actually irrelevant to them or of no consequence to them, therefore nothing to be concerned about. Now there is a crucial time to socialise and habituate our puppies, where they are more receptive to meeting and experiencing new things and will freely investigate. Research has shown the time period to be between three and ten-to-twelve weeks old. However, the timing can change with each 54

individual puppy and their previous experiences. Usually, by eighteen weeks of age, it becomes harder for our puppies to accept new things. How socialisation is performed is very important. It is not a case of just taking your puppy to lots of different places and introducing them to lots of different people. A lot of thought is required to ensure all experiences are very positive for your puppy. Each experience your puppy has will influence how they develop and their future adult behaviour. Any traumatic experiences can and will have a profound effect on them. You need to think about keeping your puppy safe, how you are going to introduce everything to your puppy and how you can make each experience very enjoyable for them; you can't just expect things to go well. You also need to understand what your puppy is telling you as you introduce them to different things and how you may need to adjust things to keep everything going smoothly. Unfortunately, socialising our puppies is not as straightforward as we sometimes hear, and it is very easy for things to go wrong, possibly giving problems later. Whittlesey Veterinary Centre are now offering puppy parties for our clients and their newly acquired puppies. Each Wednesday evening for one hour, over a course of six weeks we will explain exactly what socialisation is and why you need to do it, along with what is involved and how you should do it. Plus, you'll learn how to teach them the essential skills they will require to be able to live in our human world – hence, helping you to give your puppy the best start possible in life. JULY 2018

The Local Music Scene

Is it Raining Yet…? - by Dave Bailey

This month we look at festival time… By the time this edition drops on the mat we will be in festival mode and hopefully lazing in the sun listening to some awesome tunes from a stage somewhere in the distance. Visions of sitting on straw bales or car rugs sipping chilled drinks or performing on a festival stage with sun streaming down and unbroken blue skies, what could go wrong?

amps, thin decorators' sheet works well but can blow away if not secure, paper towels to dry off kit, poncho or mac, wellies and a change of shirt. If you use music on a stand then five sturdy pegs are a must unless you want to play all the right notes not necessarily in the right order or at all the wrong times or play a weird game of paper chase.

Tradition and the weather usually dictate the contents of the rucksack or gig bag with sun tan lotion often at the bottom of the list for essentials. To be fair, over the last few years local events have been blessed with dry, if not always hot, conditions and the crowds arrive 'en masse' as a result. The summer of 2016 saw three of the events we played locally suffering from cloudbursts and lots of rain, so knowing how to survive, as a performer is essential.

Tablets can be a better option with scrolling lyrics/ chords, but the sun can play havoc with viewing angles and you can get glare reduction film to help with reflections. If facing the sun (assuming it’s a hot one) sun glasses and sun screen, T-shirts and shorts, but please no socks with sandals. The most memorable fails include a clip file falling off a music stand and 40 plus sheets of paper blowing across the festival field, closely followed by a strange zzzzzing sound from a four-way extension lead sitting in a two-inch deep puddle…

Open front stages without canopies (trailers to you and me) and prevailing winds can not only result in wet equipment, but rain and electricity are never the best of companions. If you as a performer have ever been on the wet end of a gig, the preparation and location of equipment can make the difference between a great gig and a big repair bill.

As for the audience experience, a rapidly changing field of green to brown holds its own not so fond memories. Always remember the 4 Ps – practice, plan, prepare, and pray, but do have fun in the sun.

Some festival organisers have a unique idea as to what the difference between a shelter and weatherproof stage is; the concept of a five-piece band playing under a three-metre square B&Q gazebo in a summer storm is terrifying.

Whittlesey Festival on September 9th will have all the usual stalls, rides, and performance areas again. The young technicians from Crystal Clear Productions will support the outdoor marquee stage this year providing sound equipment and stage management.

Key survival items for the gig bag should include plastic sheet to cover keyboard and backline

Local open mic listings can be found at www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm

March Steam & Vintage Show 2018 March Steam and Vintage Show is back for its fifth year, building on the huge success of the previous four years. Last year’s show was a fantastic day out, where there was something for the whole family to enjoy. This year promises to be even better, with new attractions and entertainment, such as Irish dancers, a choir and archery for both adults and children to enjoy. There will be more than 500 exhibits on display, from large and small steam engines, vintage commercials, tractors and vintage caravans to classic cars and motorcycles. Take time to chat to the owners of the exhibits and learn more about the history of these wonderful vehicles.

The event is being held on August 4th and 5th from 10am to 5pm, on the Auction Field at Knights End Road, March, Cambridgeshire PE15 0YJ. Further details are available on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/ ramseysteamandvintageshow

Why learn an instrument? on more areas of your life than you’d imagine. It can be a lot more than just a way to pass the time!

To certain people, music comes naturally. For others, it’s like an alien language. It’s difficult to find the way to start understanding it, but like every skill, it just takes the right approach to get over that first hurdle. But why put the time in to get past that initial frustrating, confusing first step? Well, there are many benefits to learning an instrument that some people may not realise. Firstly, if you’ve never played any instruments before, it’s a lot of fun and a wonderful hobby to use your time creatively. Secondly, it’s a great way to express yourself. If you have something to say, be it personal, political, or even educational, you can communicate your thoughts through writing and performing music. It’s also a brilliant way to meet people and form close relationships. When you play music with others, you’re relying heavily on understanding each other to make sure the music sounds good and, as a result, you’ll begin to find your communication skills grow, helping with any social anxieties you may have. As well as all of this, it can help with cognitive functions, such as memory, language and some studies have even shown it to assist with recovering from brain injuries! This is for adults and children alike, and getting your child to start learning an instrument at a young age can make a huge difference to their ability to learn and help develop their brain. We’re not claiming that, after one lesson, you’ll be able to join Mensa, or selling out the Albert Hall, but regardless of one’s ability, learning an instrument can have a huge positive impact

About Breve Music Since 1989, Breve Music has been part of Peterborough’s Rivergate Arcade. The company started out as a dedicated organ shop, Peterborough Organ Centre, until 2014, when a slight change of location and store revival took place. Since the music scene had begun to move away from organs at this point, the company branched out to digital pianos, keyboards, synthesisers, electric and acoustic guitars, drum kits and even professional stage and studio equipment. Along with the store becoming larger and the range of instruments becoming wider, the company rebranded as Breve Music. Still within the Rivergate complex, the store is now outside the arcade at the very front of ASDA car park. As well as being a music shop to get all of your instruments and accessories, Breve also has a music school on-site so you can learn how to use your instruments too! Regardless of where you bought your instrument, Breve offers a range of music lessons on popular instruments. They can help with piano, guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and ukulele. They also teach music theory and hold monthly jam sessions for students. Especially for you, the Discovering Whittlesey magazine reader, we have a fantastic offer for your initial introduction to music lessons. Contact Breve Music today and quote the code: DISC4.

COPING WITH ANXIOUS FEELINGS The adolescent years are an emotional roller coaster, full of highs and low and the perfect breeding ground for worry. We may all recognise an inclination to worry from time to time, but did you know that anxiety and worrying excessively are among the most common mental health problems for both young people and adults? How much of it is a problem depends on how much the worrying impacts on a person’s life and stops them getting on with everyday things. Avoiding feared situations in order to stop feeling anxious can cause a person to not only miss out on important life experiences, but it also stops them learning how to handle their anxiety, which may be more intense the next time a similar situation comes around. The key to overcoming anxiety is to accept and understand the anxious feelings. As parents or

DARE-DEVIL ED’S SKY-DIVE FOR A WORTHY CAUSE To leap out of an aircraft the day after your last GCSE exam might not be on the top of the wish-list for most teenagers – (the day before your first one maybe!) However, when you feel so strongly about a volunteering organisation, whose work is aimed at supporting youngsters just like yourself and your friends, then, for sixteen-year-old, Bourne Academy student, Ed Saberton-Ward, it was just a question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’. So, on Saturday June 16th, at Sibson Airfield, Ed undertook the perilous journey from uncertainty, through apprehension to eventual, 64

carers, we may have been there ourselves, we may have got the T-shirt, but that doesn't mean that we have all the answers and we need to be careful not to trivialise our young people’s concerns with dismissive comments of assurance that they are worrying about nothing and everything will be fine. To help young people manage their anxiety and to stop it interfering in their lives, it’s important for them to feel able to express their worries and for someone to understand their feelings without dismissing or judging them. Acknowledging anxious feelings can help a young person realise that these feelings are normal and that they can be overcome and managed. If you know a young person who is struggling with worry and anxiety and you need help, get in touch. total exhilaration, as he leapt from 10,000 feet, in order to raise over £500 in sponsorship. After his sky-dive, Ed was, for once, almost stumped for words as he tried to express just how brilliant the whole experience had been, (even the bit when his mum hugged her baby, upon his landing with nothing broken! (Ed is the youngest son of our publisher, Claire Saberton.) This much-needed money goes to The Young Peoples Counselling Service, a charity run by a dedicated committee of volunteers and who employ trained counsellors to support young people, aged between 11-16 years, facing emotional difficulties. Common problems which they encounter include family and relationship difficulties, issues regarding loneliness and anxiety, problems associated with low self-esteem and bullying, self-harm, abuse, addiction, distress through bereavement or loss, depression and difficulty with decision-making. Dare-devil Ed now has his sights set on charity firewalking and bungee-jumping next year, following his sponsored long-distance cycle ride for ‘Help 4 Heroes’ a few years ago. Meanwhile, Ed recommends that you visit www.ypcs.uk to see just what motivated him to make such a dramatic leap into the blue. JULY 2018

School News

VOLUNTEERS WANTED TO LISTEN TO CHILDREN READ IN LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOLS Schoolreaders – a non-profit organisation that provides and matches volunteers from the community to listen to children read on a one-toone basis in a local primary school – is looking for volunteers in Cambridgeshire. This service is free to schools and is flexible to fit in with a volunteer’s availability and location, although Schoolreaders requests a minimum of a year’s commitment. No qualifications are necessary – just a good command of spoken and written English. Volunteers get enormous pleasure and fulfilment in seeing the difference that their time makes in helping children with their reading and thereby increasing a child’s life opportunities.

GREEN FINGERED PUPILS BEAT THE ELEMENTS Alderman Jacobs School (Academy Trust) reports that its new vegetable beds are finally ready. Deputy headteacher Nicola Baker said that after battling the elements the beds are now set fair thanks to the efforts of two pupils. She said: “We have tried for many weeks to get our old wooden raised beds upgraded but every time we planned to carry out the work it snowed, rained or froze! Finally, over the holidays two of our pupils managed to help their dad complete the work. Gardening club are looking forward to replanting these beds and later enjoying the fruits of their labour! Thanks go to Tony Ashton and Marshall Hustler.”

Having launched in Bedfordshire in 2013 in just 12 primary schools, Schoolreaders currently delivers approximately 6500 weekly reading sessions with a child each week in more than 350 schools across the country. Jane Whitbread, founder and trustee of Schoolreaders, said: “We hope to encourage people living in Cambridgeshire, who might be able to spare an hour or two a week, to sign up with Schoolreaders and assist children at a local primary school. Our volunteers tell us that they are tremendously rewarded by going into their local schools, knowing that a few hours helping a child learn to read each week can have such a great impact on their life outcome.” If you are interested in becoming a Schoolreader volunteer or are a school wishing to register, this can be done via the website www.schoolreaders. org or for more information, please contact 01234 924111 / admin@schoolreaders.org

NEW ROAD PRIMARY SCHOOL’S READING SHACK IS A GREAT PLACE TO LEARN New Road Primary School is doing everything it possibly can to encourage children to read more. During the half-term Miss Marshall, Mrs Brittain and Miss Marshall’s parents built a reading shack which has already proven to be a big hit with so many children. Friends of New Road School donated £100 to the project and already it is proving to be the place to be for a good read at play and lunchtime.

URGENT NEED FOR VOLUNTEER VISITORS FOR AGE UK CAMBRIDGESHIRE AND PETERBOROUGH

An SOS has gone out to find volunteers to be part of the Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Visiting Scheme; which offers support to people who are lonely and isolated in later life. Age UK has a waiting list of clients in Whittlesey and it is keen to hear from readers of Discovering Whittlesea who would like to help. Volunteers play an important part in helping to support and enhance people’s lives in many ways and they in turn receive satisfaction from the role. Each volunteer can really make a difference by visiting someone once a week for an hour. It could be for a chat, cup of tea, game of cards or perhaps an occasional trip out. Mrs Dee Potter, volunteer organiser, wants to hear from anyone who would like to know more about this opportunity. If you have some free time and are interested then please call Dee on 01354 691898 or email dee.potter@ageukcap.org.uk

CAN YOU HELP THE ELDERLY AND HOUSEBOUND? Are you looking for a new interest? Something to do to fill those few spare hours a week? Whittlesey Community Car Scheme is appealing for more volunteer drivers to join their extremely successful and busy team, taking elderly and housebound residents to their medical and social appointments. If you live locally, enjoy meeting people and would like to make a real difference in your community, the group would love to hear from you. You would use your own car, for which a mileage allowance is paid to cover the cost of fuel. Need more information? Then please contact Anne on 07810 427483 for an informal chat.

LETTER B’S CHARITY FUND-RAISING NIGHT NGNPUK (No Gain, No Pain UK) has received a donation from a charity night at the Letter B pub in Whittlesey. Four hundred pounds was raised for the group at a recent pub aid quiz which will go a long way to providing another syringe driver to be used locally. Other charities to benefit from fundraising at the Letter B included, Avengers Haven, Whittlesey Christmas Lights, Peterborough Talking Newspaper and the Whittlesey Young Persons Counselling Service. off on the way and pick up a couple of collection tins and give out some empty ones. It’s our way of doing something to help our local hospice.” The team at Thorpe Hall Hospice are also particularly seeking Blue Tin Heroes in Stamford, Market Deeping and the surrounding villages and would love your help. To find out more about becoming a Blue Tin Hero please call 01733 225999 or email Thorpe. fundraising@sueryder.org

GILLIAN MAY WHITWELL Jill's family would like to extend a massive thank you to everyone who has offered support and kind words with Jill's sudden passing. Her daughter Deborah Pittam says they have taken great comfort.

BLUE TIN HEROES WANTED

Every year thousands of people across the region choose to pop loose change into charity collection boxes in pubs, shops and community hubs rather than weigh down purses and pockets. What might only be a few pennies to each individual adds up for the charity. Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough receives, on average, £706 every month from collection tins. That’s enough to pay for a hospice nurse for more than five days. But the hospice needs help – in the shape of Blue Tin Heroes – to round up tins, deliver them to Thorpe Hall in Longthorpe and to distribute empty tins around the region. Community fundraising officer Sharon Baker has the task of co-ordinating Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice collection tins. She said: “We are really grateful to all the venues across the region which have one of our collection tins – the contents really do add up to make a difference here at Thorpe Hall. Now we need volunteers who are willing to use their community connections and knowledge to pick up full tins, distribute empty ones to venues which already support us and identify places which might like to have one of our collection tins at the till, on the counter or on the bar.” Husband and wife Elaine and John Rignall (pictured) have already signed up as Blue Tin Heroes covering the area near their home in Stanground, Peterborough. Elaine said: “John and I are often out visiting friends and going places so it’s no bother for us to stop JULY 2018

She said that the fantastic donations made to Jill's chosen charities – East Anglian Air Ambulance and RNLI - have been very gratefully received and will go to do much good and she also thanked H.E. Bull and Son and their representatives for showing great compassion to the family. A special mention has gone to The Ivy Leaf Club for their generosity in providing the venue and refreshments to celebrate Jill's life.

FRANK IFIELD SHOW RAISES £1000 FOR AIR AMBULANCE SERVICE The total profits raised from ticket sales, donations and raffle resulting from the Frank Ifield – Remembers fund-raising show at The Ivy Leaf Club in Whittlesey in May amounted to £1000, which will be donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Event organiser Barbara Lindsey, in association with producer Johnny Mans, would like to thank all who contributed to a brilliant and successful evening.

Church Matters

Partnership for Missional Church Our team of parish churches is beginning a new project called Partnership for Missional Church. This project is supported by the Church Mission Society. This is a three-year process that works alongside local churches to help them discover: • The release that comes from truly relying on God • The liberty that comes from taking the time to listen • The confidence that comes from genuinely connecting with our community • The impact of innovating, risk-taking and not being afraid to experiment • The lightness of living out our call as a church There are three phases to the process: Phase 1: Listening, paying attention and discovering where God is already at work. We use ‘dwelling in the word’ as a spiritual practice to help us become naturally missional rather than doing missional activities. Phase 2: Experimenting. Based on what we have discovered about ourselves and our communities in phase one.

Phase 3: This phase is about recognising what God’s particular mission call for our church is and figuring out how we will put this into action (Partnership for Missional Church). Please note that the outcome might be different for different local church congregation. Where do we begin? Administering a ‘Congregational discovery questionnaire’ across our churches and the wider community. This will involve eight questions which will be asked by members of our listening/steering group. These result wills then be shared with the wider congregation and community. Another event will be involving our churches’ timelines. To tell the story of our Christian faith down through the years. Discovering and sharing what the church has meant to so many people. This is an opportunity for us to highlight any important historical facts, any positive memories but also an opportunity for us to talk about any challenging memories. Set your Church Free. God is at Work, Your Church can join in. Please keep us in your prayers God bless you all from Nigel and Staffan

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Never Give Up During my senior school years in the late 1950s I loved various types of sport; swimming, hurdles, discus, and was particularly good at the javelin. Because our school wanted to win trophies at the area inter-school sports day, as this event drew closer, I would be given permission to join various classes on the sports field or swimming baths, where an area would be roped off for me to practice. I’m not sure that modern schooling would permit this today. Each year the head of sport would try to inspire the team with the same statement – ‘Winners never quit, and Quitters never win’ – looking at everyone in the team he would say, “If there are any quitters among you, then quit now, so you don’t let the school and team down”. Every year that saying challenged me and forged within me a determination to never give up. Let me hopefully inspire you with some interesting facts.

Colonel Sanders, of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame, was put out of business by the building of a new road in 1967. He was rejected 1009 times before finding a buyer for his 11 herbs and spices recipe. Seven years later, aged 75 he sold his fried chicken company for 15 million dollars. Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor for lacking ideas. He went bankrupt many times and was rejected 302 times before finding funding to build Disneyland. Gone With The Wind, that great book and film, was rejected by 38 publishers. The great composer Beethoven was told by his violin teacher that he handled the violin awkwardly and was a hopeless composer. We cannot control what life throws at us, but we can choose to never give up on our desires. If you lack the strength, ask God, then join us Sunday at 10.45am for a faith lift.

Centuries of Experience Brought to Whittlesey Town Tyres, in Eastgate, has been in business for nearly a year and a half now. We chatted to owner Joseph about his reasons for setting up in Whittlesey, and his family’s long connection with the trade. Joseph grew up in the small town of Nurhak, Turkey. He’s been in the mechanics and tyre business all of his life but came to England twenty five years ago, where he has owned his own business for the last fifteen. But his connection with the trade goes back much further than that, as he explains: “My family name is Wheels and has been involved in the same kind of trade for about five hundred years. They started off repairing wooden wheels for carts, then over time expanded into metalwork (horseshoes, axes and such) and then eventually into tyres. Even now, after all those years, if anyone needs anything made or repaired in the town of Nurhak, they come to my family!”

With a connection to the trade going back so many generations, Joseph’s expertise of tyres and mechanics is practically in his blood. But what brought him to Whittlesey? “I previously lived and worked in Enfield, London, but as time went by my wife and I became increasingly disillusioned with the area,” says Joseph. “We wanted our children to be brought up in a small town like the kind I grew up in, and when I found these premises on the internet it seemed perfect. We love Whittlesey.”
