Introduction

Welcome to Your November Issue. Inside Highlights

November was always my favourite month when I was growing up.

4................ Holly Jean – Remembrance

For some reason playing outside in invariably damp and misty weather conditions, having ‘conker’ competitions and generally messing about in the dark seemed exciting, especially with Christmas around the corner.

5................ Remembrance Parade

6..................Steve Gibbs Flies Over the Fens 7..................Spot The Poppy Competition

But the major reason was it was the month of my birthday and better still it fell on the fifth… Bonfire Night! My birthday parties always had that extra bit of excitement to my mates’ as they were accompanied by a firework display in the back garden followed the next day by the ritual collecting of the old fireworks… we were easily pleased back then. Coincidentally my son shares the same birthday as me and my daughter was born in November on my late father’s birthday, so November has always figured highly in my life. Sadly, nowadays I’m of an age where I wouldn’t care if I only had a birthday every four or five years but back then it was great...

This month marks the centenary of the end of the First World War and in local towns and villages many people will gather for Remembrance Day services on Sunday, November 11th.

30-31........Community Matters

It is difficult today to comprehend what a massive effect the 1914-18 war would have had on the local population.

32...............AA Whittlesey Computers

Schoolfriends would have joined up and gone to fight abroad in a conflict they probably didn’t know too much about while back home mothers, wives, girlfriends and children soldiered on without them.

34...............Club Matters

36...............Recipe: Toffee Apples

The sacrifice of all those who gave their lives in the Great War and also the Second World War and later conflicts should never be forgotten, and this year especially the eleventh will be even more poignant.

Remembrance

We Will Remember Them

R

emember, remember the 5th of November... I can remember being in primary school and chanting this with my friends. Remembering Guy Fawkes, just so that we could go and watch fireworks and eat toffee apples! But, where is the chant for the 11th of November? An incredibly important day, one that should be remembered and cherished, forever. In my personal opinion, the importance of this date should be drilled into young people, so that they understand just what happened on that date back in 1918, and how it shapes everybody’s lives today. On November 11th, 1918, fighting in World War I came to an end, following the signing of an armistice between the Allies and Germany that called for a ceasefire effective at 11 a.m. – it was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The fight for our freedom should never be taken for granted, and certainly not belittled. We should be thankful for the strength and resilience of every service man, woman, and indeed thousands of animals involved too that participated in the fight for our lives, no matter how many years pass. As a young person, I will make sure to remember every day, and as I grow older, my respect and

gratefulness will not shrink with time; I will make sure that when I have children one day, they will forever remember, no matter how many years it has been. I wrote a short poem to say thank you. We will remember them. I take this day, the 11th of November I take this day as one to remember. While the memories lie and poppies grow, We don’t forget, we make sure we know, That it’s not just today we are thankful for, It’s every day, everything, for evermore. So thank you, soldier, son, family man and friend, For giving all you were, right until the very end. If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t be here today, So thank you always, today’s your day.

Local Experiences

Flying Over The Fens

– by Steve Gibbs

the aircraft rather than the design, so the very lightweight C-42 is also a microlight. I climbed into the left-hand seat, normally reserved for the pilot in most aircraft, and strapped in. Then Katie climbed aboard, and, after we’d put on our headsets, she started the engine. We taxied out to the runway, stopping on the way to carry out a few checks to make sure all systems were functioning properly.

I

f, like me, you look at the sky every time you hear an aeroplane or helicopter, then you'd probably enjoy a flight over the Fens. I'd wanted to learn to fly since I was a boy, and, 15 years ago while living in Wales, I achieved that ambition and obtained my flying licence.

However, deteriorating eyesight meant that I was grounded after just a few short years of flying and I had to sell my aircraft. Now, 11 years later, I have better eyesight than before after two cataract operations, so I thought it would be great to take to the skies once more. My flying licence has long since lapsed, as to keep it you have to fly a minimum number of hours every year which I was unable to do, so I booked a training flight with Cambridgeshire Microlights near Chatteris, run by Katie Denham.

A quick “All OK?” to me from Katie and then she brought the engine to full throttle. We accelerated rapidly along the grass runway, taking off in a very short distance and climbing skywards at around 70 mph. As I had flying experience, as soon as we were airborne Katie asked me if I’d like to take control, and for the next hour I was delighted to be in control most of the time, except for periods when Katie took back control so that I could concentrate on taking photographs. The climb to a cruise height of 2500 feet took only a few minutes, and then we headed towards Whittlesey. On a clear day the view from that altitude can stretch as far as 60 miles, so the whole of the Wash was clearly visible. During the one-hour flight we had time to fly around both Whittlesey and Wisbech before heading back to base at Chatteris. The views speak for themselves, and if you know someone who’s always looking skywards then I can think of few better presents than a trial flight voucher. My hour was over all too soon, and many thanks to Katie and Cambridgeshire Microlights for a most enjoyable flight. Photos: Scenes from Steve’s memorable flight

When the day arrived, it proved to be bright, sunny and very warm, with not too much cloud and not too much wind – pretty much perfect flying weather! After a brief chat about my flying experience and what I was hoping for from the flight we walked out to the aircraft. G-CVAL is an Ikarus C-42 microlight, and at this point you might be thinking that in the photos it looks like a regular small aeroplane, and aren't microlights those things like hang gliders with an engine? Well, yes, they can be, but the term microlight refers to the maximum weight of 6

OVER 60 LOCAL TEACHERS RECEIVE FREE TRAINING THANKS TO OPPORTUNITY AREA FUNDING – By Steve Barclay MP

I

n January of last year, the Department of Education announced that Fenland and East Cambridgeshire was going to be one of just 12 areas in the country to be designated as an ‘Opportunity Area.’ With this, came an additional £6 million funding for our schools and priority access to other Department of Education funding. Now almost two years into the programme, the Department for Education Opportunity Area has announced promising new figures from the last academic year’s programme of activity in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire including:

• More than 60 teachers in our area are now embarking on National Professional Qualifications completely free of charge. These qualifications would usually cost a school between £450 and £7000 and give teachers the opportunity to increase their skills, confidence and knowledge in a range of areas including leadership, STEM subjects, phonics and managing challenging pupil behaviour. These schemes will help teachers to develop their careers and go on to benefit the children they teach. • 51 schools in our area (primary, secondary and special) are now involved in evidence-

based action research projects which will help to improve outcomes for their most disadvantaged pupils. • 13 schools in our area were supported to offer incentives to fill vacancies and 21 Teach First trainees were placed. An exciting new programme of work is now being carried out for local schools which include: • YMCA mental health training for schools and parents. • A marketing campaign to attract more teachers to our area and to entice members of the Fenland and East Cambridgeshire community to consider a career in teaching. • Parental engagement sessions. • Phonics training. • Further training for teaching assistants. This progress helps work towards our goal to ensure that all of our local children have the opportunity to unlock their full potential. I will be meeting with local headteachers again to discuss how we make the most of the Opportunity Area Programme and to hear more about how I can support teachers. Bonfire Night

The Eco-Friendly Way to Enjoy Bonfire Night

R

emember, remember the 5th of November! Guy Fawkes night is here once again so it only seems right to discuss fireworks!

Fireworks are beautiful and mesmerising and used for all sorts of occasions and over the years they have become more and more developed and spectacular. However, they come at a cost – and not just in terms of money. To get the stunning colours, chemicals are added to the fireworks and in lots of cases these chemicals are toxic. When these chemicals are released into the air they pollute the atmosphere and the environment. A modern firework consists of a shell of plastic, papier-mache, or heavy paper surrounding compartments separated by cardboard. That’s a lot of recyclable material that has to be wasted due to contamination from the chemicals! The UK spends billions of pounds on fireworks each year, with average fireworks displays costing cities between £10,000-£16,000. Not only is that a lot of money, it’s a lot of single use recyclable material going to landfill. Inevitably, a large percentage of this will also end up in waterways and pollute the countryside. This year, why not take an eco-approach? Get the kids involved and make some fireworks out of recycled materials such as plastic bottles and cardboard tubes – Pinterest is full of creative and fun ideas. Or, find some beautiful crunchy autumnal leaves and pretend they’re fireworks N OVEM B ER 2018

by throwing them in the air! These alternatives are so simple but will provide lots of fun as well as teaching children about recycling, reducing waste and getting the family outside in the autumn air! Or, if you are holding your own display, try and buy fireworks that are sold in recyclable packaging such as cardboard boxes. Make sure you dispose of your fireworks safely by leaving them in water for 48 hours to allow all the explosive components to become inert. Then they can be placed in your green bin. To find out more about recycling, events coming up in Fenland and ways you can help visit www.fenland.gov.uk. Additionally, if you or someone you know wants to become a Getting It Sorted volunteer please visit www.fenland.gov.uk/ volunteers for more information. Any help, big or small, all contributes to the war against waste and helps to spread the word! How Was The Hot Weather For You? t was exceptional and highlighted some flaws in our strategies for dealing with heat. We (as health practitioners) were frustrated with the advice given to the general public.

The official government advice to dealing with the heat was ‘to not go outside unless you have to’, how useful is that? Fortunately, there are four more applicable strategies which we will cover, two this month and two next month, which will help you cope with the heat in the UK or on holiday abroad. Strategy 1: Drink more regularly This advice applies to those people who live in a state of dehydration. A simple way of telling (if this applies to you) is to regularly look at your urine colour. Those who commonly exist with yellow, orange or darker shades of these are dehydrated. Those in the pale yellow or clear bracket are hydrated so can skip to point 2. Water is a good absorber of heat energy. Put simply, the more water you hold in your cells the greater your ability to absorb heat. Now most people commonly drink more when they are in the sun but not when they are out of it. Unfortunately, drinking water in the sun simply replaces the fluid you are losing being in the sun. Therefore, your net hydration remains relatively unchanged. As an added bonus, maintaining good hydration reduces the likelihood of sunburn. Things burn when they are dry. Imagine trying to set fire to wet leaves.

Strategy 2: Cover your skin Sunlight bounces off our skin and, in the process, heats it up. This increases the risk of sunburn and generally makes you hotter. When the sun comes out, people tend to expose their skin with the advent of shorts, vest tops, skirts, etc. Let’s look across the seas to countries were heat is a normality to see what we should be wearing in times of prolonged heat. The common theme is one of light-coloured, loose, breathable clothing that covers the majority of the skin. Why?: a) Light colours reflect sunlight, dark colours absorb it b) Covered clothing reflects the sunlight therefore it heats up the clothing not your skin c) The clothing is loose because it creates an air gap between the clothing and your skin d) Air is a poor conductor of heat. Therefore, the clothing gets hot but because there is air between it and your skin, the heat transferred to your skin is less e) Breathable so it allows your skin to release moisture and heat When we consider the typical British summer wear, we see tight, non-breathable, colourful and exposed clothing, not ideal. Next month we will go through the other two strategies. Bye for now!

How Could Acupuncture Help You? Acupuncture is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of illnesses and symptoms. As one of the safest medical treatments, both conventional and complementary, on offer in the UK, many people use acupuncture for help with specific symptoms or conditions. Others choose acupuncture as a preventive measure, to strengthen their constitution, or because they just feel generally unwell. A growing body of evidence-based clinical research shows that traditional acupuncture safely treats a wide range of common health problems, including anxiety, arthritis, back pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, sports injuries and much more. Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages, including babies, children and the elderly. It can be very effective when integrated with conventional medicine. During your first visit, your acupuncturist needs to gain a thorough understanding of your main complaint and your general health and lifestyle. This involves asking questions about your current symptoms and your medical history, as well as such

things as your sleeping pattern, your appetite and digestion, and your emotional wellbeing. Based on all the information you have given, the practitioner will make a diagnosis and put together your treatment plan, which may include lifestyle and dietary advice as well as acupuncture. The acupuncture needles are very much finer than the needles used for injections and blood tests. You may not even feel them penetrate the skin and, once in place, they are hardly noticeable. Most people find acupuncture relaxing and often feel very calm after a treatment. A lot of people have acupuncture to relieve specific aches and pains, such as osteoarthritis of the knee, TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder), headaches and low back pain, or for common health problems like an overactive bladder. Other people choose acupuncture when they can feel their bodily functions are out of balance, but they have no obvious diagnosis. We have daytime, evening and Saturday appointments available. If you would like more information, or to try acupuncture, contact us on 01354 651200.

The Local Music Scene

Whittlesey Festival 2018 - by Dave Bailey

This month we look back... The dust has settled, the cones are all gone, the planters returned to their yellow marks on the square and the last notes have faded away. The 11th annual town festival may be fading into memory but the planning for 2019 has already begun. Away from the street stalls and Market Square performances, the two music stages in St Mary’s Church and yard hosted a wealth of musical talent ranging from choirs to rock, jazz and brass bands.

maintaining a well-balanced sound. The event draws acts from both the open mic and local music scene from across three counties.

With every performance timetabled like a school day curriculum, and changeover between acts smoothed to perfection, a day of music and song as varied in content as possible, hopefully, has once again delighted the attendees.

Many thanks to all the performers and stage crews for their continued support and professional approach to a terrific event.

The yard stage was crewed this year by the local Young Technicians, a group who provide training programmes aimed at 11-19-year olds, all centred around the Live Events industry, headed up by Pino Soccio. The group provided the sound system and the technical know-how. Starting with the traditional outdoor service the stage was quickly transformed from pulpit to rock arena. With such a competent team they managed the changes from diverse acts ranging from solo ukulele to acoustic and rock bands N OVEM B ER 2018

Inside the church the emphasis was this year on choral and acoustic performances, opening with the Whittlesey Concert Band, local school and community choirs, Barbershop singers and acoustic guitarists. After the 4pm finale the mass exodus begins and as the last gazebo leaves the church yard, the curtain falls for another year.

Here’s to Festival no 12‌ On the acoustic session front Keith Golightly, the landlord at the Railway, Ramsey, a regular supporter of live music and always the welcoming host at the pub, has hung up his pump clips. This has resulted in the closure of the backroom sessions there. Thankfully, we have been welcomed at a new venue at the Angel on the High Street and we continue on the second and fourth Wednesdays every month at 8pm. All genres are welcome to this acoustic event. ANNIVERSARY GARDEN CREATED IN WHITTLESEY An anniversary garden paying homage to the Fens’ sugar beet industry has been created by volunteers in Whittlesey thanks to £4000 of community funding.

Members of Whittlesey Street Pride have created the beet-cutter themed garden on the corner of Grosvenor Road to help celebrate the group’s 10th anniversary. The project was made possible after Tesco shoppers voted for the group to receive the maximum possible grant from the supermarket’s community grant scheme, Bags of Help. The garden features a colourful, raised flower bed and an eye-catching beet-cutter feature, as well as apple trees to the side. Fred Mills, chairman of Whittlesey Street Pride, said: “We wanted to create something special to celebrate our 10th anniversary and thanks to Tesco, and members of the local community who voted for us, we’ve been able to create a wonderful feature in the town which I hope will be enjoyed by many for several years to come.” Councillor Peter Murphy, portfolio holder for the environment at Fenland District Council, which coordinates Fenland’s 15 Street Pride groups, said the garden was a wonderful example of the difference volunteers can make to their communities.

We bring you items of interest for your home and community. If there is something you’d like us to cover or you have something to say please get in touch at: Discovering Whittlesea, Benwick Road Ind. Est., Benwick Road, Whittlesey, Peterborough, PE7 2HD

FENLAND BREWS UP A STORM FOR MACMILLAN

Councillors, staff and residents helped raise cash for charity when Fenland District Council hosted a series of events in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. More than £1280 was raised for the cause, which is the chosen charity of council chairman Cllr Kay Mayor, for her year in office. Whittlesey’s New Vision Fitness Manor Centre held a coffee morning last month, raising £287 towards the total. The fundraiser followed a Big Quiz night at the council’s New Vision Fitness George Campbell Centre in March. Teams of four went head-to-head in a battle of the brains, with £265 being raised towards the total. Then Cllr Mayor invited everyone to join her at Fenland Hall, March, for her World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event. Freshly-baked cakes and sausage rolls were on sale, and there was also a raffle with more than 80 prizes and a dress down day for staff. Local residents joined councillors and staff on the morning, along with North East Cambridgeshire MP Steve Barclay (pictured with the Mayor). Cllr Mayor said: “I have been delighted to see so many people support these events, and such a wonderful amount of money raised for the cause. “Macmillan makes a huge difference to the lives of cancer patients and their families in Fenland, and local fundraising efforts go a long way to ensuring its support can continue.” Another quiz night in aid of Macmillan was due to be held at the New Vision Fitness Hudson Leisure Centre in Wisbech on Thursday, October 25th.

“The Bags of Help scheme sees local people decide how money should be spent in the community, so it’s great to see them support Street Pride and recognise the work volunteers do in their area.” Run in partnership with environmental charity Groundwork, Bags of Help uses funds raised from the sale of carrier bags to award grants to thousands of local community projects every year. Since launching in 2015, the scheme has provided more than £48 million to over 13,000 local community projects.

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH

WEFA – Then and Now In 2014 the then Mayor of Whittlesey, Councillor David Mason, approached me concerning ‘Food Poverty’ in the Whittlesey catchment area. While a solution to this formed part of our future plans, the church had just concluded a very demanding 18-month, £250,000 remodelling period and needed to financially and physically recover. However, the more David and I spoke it became clear that those future plans should be brought forward. Very soon Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid (WEFA) was born. Since then WEFA has worked with many families to overcome their problems and get back on their feet again. But, we know there are many other families needing help and we continue to seek ways to reach them. Sadly, some do abuse this provision, and we do not hesitate to wisely deal with it, but our focus must always remain on the genuine families who go hungry each week. As finances allow we aim to increase the range of help available.

Everyone on the committee would like to say a huge thank you to those in this amazing community whose consistent help makes this possible. Nisa & Co-op supermarkets, who allow a collection facility to be permanently in their shops. Morrison’s supermarket in Cardea who faithfully supplies us with a variety of short dated fresh food items, allowing us to vary the provision available. The congregations of the Church of England team, Queen Street church, the Salvation Army, Roman Catholic church who collect items each week; and Whittlesey Christian Church who freely provides use of its design and marketing team along with facilities for storage, administration and distribution. Not forgetting Deborah Slater and her amazing team, the schools, various groups, Whittlesey Council and members of the public who make either food or financial donations, helping us purchase things urgently needed. Please do not hesitate to speak with us if you wish to know more.

School News

GRANDPARENTS RETURN TO AJS! Alderman Jacobs School prides itself on engaging with the community as often as it can and this year it once again opened its doors to welcome children’s grandparents who lined up with pupils and then came into school for the first lesson of the day. Across school many different activities were in place and the visitors were challenged in more ways than one! In Year 2 the extra pairs of hands were put to good use in a cookery lesson where the children were able to choose ingredients for a salad and then construct and finally taste it themselves. In Year 4 a variety of maths activities was on the tables where children were completing a number of open-ended activities; some in the style of popular TV series such as Countdown.

EGG-CITING TIMES IN YEAR 5! Park Lane Primary and Nursery School’s Year 5 pupils were excited to learn all about life cycles and to introduce new additions to their year group when Madeline from the Happy Chick Company brought in 11 eggs for the pupils to hatch as part of their Beast Creator topic. Ten eggs hatched in total with half of the chicks being moved to a brooder box and the others left in the incubator to keep the newest arrival company. The latest arrival struggled out of its shell just as the children were about to go home! Chicks are very social animals and it would have been cruel to leave just one in the brooder box on its own.

They watched grandparents competing with each other, using their phones to try to get to a magic number… However, the children did not have that option! In Year 3, children were following up on work that had been started on a recent trip to the Flag Fen site. The activities ranged from research using iPads to note making. One of the most challenging lessons seen was ‘modal verbs’ in Year 6 that had more than one visitor impressed with the children’s knowledge! The morning ended with some staying for a drink and a biscuit to share stories about their day and previous days at AJS. Photo: One of the school’s Early Years children working on a piece of art work with his Nanna

A few days later, excitement reigned as the children finally got the chance to hold the chicks. Class teacher Sarah Gregory showed them how to hold them gently and carefully; If you hold them on their back, they just go to sleep! The chicks soon got used to the children. Mrs Gregory said: "Hatching eggs in school is not only a fantastic learning experience for the children, it also creates a real sense of community. Children in all other year groups have visited Year 5 and have been fascinated to watch the chicks hatch and grow." By the last day that the chicks were at the school, they had grown so much and become really noisy especially after they had eaten their food! Pupils also noticed how their wings were now almost completely covered with feathers. The chicks have all gone to a local small holder who will "grow on" all the chickens. 26

Is Your Child Affected by Cyberbullying? For the most part, social media networks offer a great opportunity for young people to make new friends, share common interests, learn and have fun. However, the use of social media also brings with it risks, with internet safety being one of the most pressing issues facing parents in the digital age. Cyberbullying continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing young people online, with one in five young people experiencing it.

Let’s not forget the bullies. Some young people who bully others do so as a coping mechanism for their own trauma and stressful situations, and they too may need help. Sometimes all a young person needs is someone to talk to.

Cyberbullying has all the hallmarks of playground-type bullying, but doesn’t stop at the school gates – it follows young people home as they use phones, tablets and computer games. It can have a devastating impact, sometimes causing those subjected to it to experience social anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, self-harm and eating disorders.

If you have a concern about a young person, get in touch with us here at Young Persons Counselling Service. We are a local, not-for-profit charity that provides free, confidential counselling to 11-16 year olds across Peterborough. There’s no need to suffer in silence – we’re here to help. Contact us on 0800 634 4395.

So, it’s important to take a young person seriously if they tell you they are being bullied. However, parents may not always be aware that their child is being bullied. Some common warning signs may include low mood, loss in appetite, a desire for isolation, sudden changes in behaviour and a decrease in the time spent focusing on their studies.

FOCUSING ON FENLAND TRANSPORT What are Fenland’s rural transport needs and how could these be better met in future? These will be just two of the questions asked when a new series of public meetings is launched by the Fenland Transport and Access Group (TAG) and Fenland District Council. The five Transport Focus Group meetings will enable in-depth discussion on different transport topics including travel by rail, road and bus, as well as walking and cycling.

LITTLE COMPANY HAS BIG IDEAS Whittlesey woman Natalie Brannigan has set up The Little Marketing Company which has big ideas to support businesses in the Peterborough area. With start-up businesses at a record high across the UK, the Little Marketing Company firmly believes size shouldn’t matter when it comes to accessing the marketing tools, knowledge and expertise they need to grow. After using the marketing expertise (gained over 13 years across the private, public and charity sectors, local authorities and government) to support friends and family to establish and grow their own successful local businesses, Natalie became passionate about helping other small businesses do the same. So, in 2018, while on maternity leave, the Little Marketing Company was born! The company has already supported more than 30 small businesses in the region, ranging from hairdressers, fitness firms and PAs to electrical and property with its wide-ranging tailored services including a marketing health check, marketing plans, marketing masterclasses, start-up packages, mentor sessions and consultations. More than 40 people attended an event to mark the launch and hear how the LMC could support their business. Natalie said: “I’m thrilled at the interest that the Little Marketing Company has had so far, which just goes to show how much small businesses are crying out for this kind of support.” She can be contacted on 07935 149625 or email info@thelittlemarketingcompany.com www.thelittlemarketingcompany.com 30

It will also build on the success of Fenland’s first Transport Conference last year which explored ways in which the local network can be improved, and highlighted the need for ongoing public engagement. The meetings will be held at Fenland Hall, County Road, March, on the following dates: Thursday November 1st 2018: 1pm-3pm (railway) Thursday November 8th 2018: 10am to noon (local highways) Thursday January 10th 2019: 1pm-3pm (bus services) Wednesday January 23rd 2019: 10am to noon (walking) Wednesday January 30th 2019:10am to noon (cycling) Places on the meetings are limited and will be given on a first come, first served basis. To book your place email: neighbourhoodstrategy@ fenland.gov.uk or contact 01354 622318. Places must be booked at least 48 hours before the event is due to take place.

SUDBURY COURT XMAS BAZAAR Sudbury Court is holding a Christmas Bazaar on Saturday December 1st, 9.30am-12.30pm. There will be a raffle, tombola, cake stalls and craft stalls and plenty of bric-a-brac to browse through! The raffle will be drawn at 12 noon. N OV E M BE R 2 0 1 8

COUNCILLOR SURGERIES WILL BE HELD IN GROSVENOR HOUSE FROM 9.30AM TO 10.30AM ON THE FIRST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH THROUGHOUT 2018. Councillors present on Saturday November 3rd will be: Councillor Kay Mayor (District and Town Councillor) Councillor Alan Bristow (Town Councillor) If you have any matters of concern and wish to discuss them with a Councillor, then please come along and let us know.

FUNDING APPROVED TO IMPROVE WHITTLESEY PLAY AREA One of Fenland’s oldest play parks is to be given a new lease of life thanks to a £47,000 grant from funding body WREN. Fenland District Council has been awarded the money from WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund to revamp the Water Tower Play Park in Whittlesey. Following a community consultation on what local residents would like to see included at the park, the old equipment will be replaced with a new climbing and adventure frame, a zip-wire, an overhead spinning carousel and a rope swing.

We are pleased to let you know that the next meeting of the Business Forum is on Wednesday 28th November at The Falcon Hotel, Whittlesey, 6pm for 6.30pm start. Guest speaker to be confirmed. See you on the 28th. Chair Joe Jennings

There will also be a tractor climbing frame and slide for the little ones, a basket swing and two-seater swings, new springer seats, and a roundabout and see-saw, as well as new picnic benches. Whittlesey Town Council contributed £5000 towards the total project cost of £57,000, and with support from Fenland District Council a successful bid was made to WREN. In the next few weeks, Fenland District Council will procure a company to install the new equipment, with work anticipated to take place in January. It is hoped the park will be ready to open in time for the February half-term. Whittlesey town councillor Ray Whitwell was among those keen to see the play park improved for Whittlesey’s families and has been involved in the project from the start. He said: “Children’s play equipment in this part of town has been lacking for many years, so I’m delighted that WREN has awarded this grant. I am confident that Whittlesey residents and their children will be pleased to see this project come to fruition.” WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Technology

Software and Hardware Explained This month Oliver continues last month’s article with his feature on ‘software’.

There are two main components in a computer that make it function, one is software and the other hardware. Hardware is anything you can touch, e.g. the keyboard and mouse, but the software is all the things you can’t touch for example, Microsoft Windows 10 or Microsoft Word. You may think then software isn’t as important as hardware, but it is! If you can’t use the software on a computer because it’s too confusing or complicated, then you won’t be able to use your computer properly. The different types of software used on any type of computer would be an antivirus/antimalware, word processing, a spreadsheet program, an internet browser and, perhaps, some other bits of software. The most common antivirus and antimalware you can get are programs like Microsoft Defender, McAfee or Norton, they all work in the same way, removing viruses, malware, trojans etc. from your computer and making sure it’s secure. Also, there are specific adware removal programs, e.g., HitMan, Adware Removal Programme by TSA, and various other software. Word processing and spreadsheet software normally come in a package deal with thing like Microsoft Office that contains Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access etc. But that now costs £79.99 a year and again you would have to renew that every year. In our software build we have a program that allows you to do all the things you can with the full Microsoft Office package that you don’t

have to renew meaning you can spend more time on typing up what you need rather than renewing the subscription. Free alternatives available include Libre Office and OpenOffice Writer, to name but two. An internet browser is essential to a computer as it allows you to use services like Google, so you can surf the internet. There are many web browsers available including, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox and Opera. The main differences between them are speed and security, and, in my opinion, Chrome is far superior in this aspect giving up to 50 percent speed improvements from IE meaning the pictures/ site you just looked for will load even quicker. On Chrome they will also be delivered to your computer in a more secure environment meaning you don’t have to worry about hackers getting the information from your browser. At AA Whittlesey Computers we install our ‘out of the box’ software builds on all the computers we sell hoping that when you get home and switch on your laptop/tower, you will have all the software you need to just ‘use-it’; rather than spending a few days doing updates and installing software (usually at a cost) as usually happens when buying a computer from a major retailer. Happy computing! Oliver, Len and Deborah

WHAT’S COMING UP FOR COATES WI Elizabeth Ollenbittle gave an Autumn floral demonstration of three beautiful arrangements to Coates WI members in October. November will see the annual meeting and December’s topic will be Christmas customs and folklore.

WIDOWS CONTACT GROUP LATEST A mix-up in last month’s magazine led to the incorrect photograph being used in an article on Whittlesey Widows Contact Group. Apologies… Members of the group (pictured) are busy planning their Christmas celebrations and finalising their programme for next year, which is likely to feature a visit to Boston in January.

Meanwhile, Coates WI and Coates Book Club are holding a coffee/crafts for sale morning at Holy Trinity Church, Coates on Saturday, December 8th, 2018, at 10am-12pm, which is open to everyone. Guests and new members are always welcome at Coates WI which meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Coates Village Hall at 7.30pm – there is no meeting in January. For more information, contact Fiona on 01733 208516 or Jen on 01733 840376

Group members will receive their programmes early in January.

STAND-IN SPEAKER ENTERTAINS MEMBERS Whittlesey Ladysmith WI’s speaker for October was Leonard Priestley who kindly stepped in at short notice when the original demonstrator was taken ill. His working life was as a lorry driver/furniture removal man and he kept members entertained with stories, some funny and some sad, but all entertaining. In November the group will be ‘crafting’ items for its Christmas tree entry for the Christmas Tree Festival at St. Mary's church in December, and they will be judged for this month's competition. The last cookery and craft competition of the year will also take place this month with homemade mince pies for cookery and a homemade Christmas cracker for craft. The next meeting is Tuesday, November 13th at 7.30pm in St. Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane. New members and guests are always welcome. More information from Sue on 01733 205927. 34

Eat the Season

TOFFEE APPLES Toffee Apples make a great Bonfire Night snack and the kids will love helping to decorate them with their favourite sweets!

Method

Ingredients

• Insert a wooden skewer or lolly stick into the stalk end of each apple. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment.

10 wooden skewers (or lolly sticks) 10 Golden Delicious apples, scrubbed 350g Fairtrade light soft brown sugar 2 tsp white wine vinegar 35g unsalted English butter 2 tbsp golden syrup To decorate, why not try sugar stars, crushed ginger snap biscuits, chocolate M&Ms, sprinkles or bits of popcorn? Yummy!

36

D I S C O V E R I N G

• Put the sugar in a heavy-based pan with 120ml cold water and heat gently, stirring until it dissolves. Bring to the boil and add the vinegar, butter and golden syrup. Boil gently for 12 minutes, until it has reached the soft-crack stage (138°C on a sugar thermometer, or the point at which a little of the mixture, dropped into cold water, forms threads that bend slightly before breaking). • Dip the bottom two-thirds of the apple in the toffee, turning to coat. Working quickly, get the children to add their decoration of choice to each apple. Leave to set on the baking parchment for 15 minutes.

Consumer Advice

Don’t Leave Your Elderly Neighbours in the Dark At this point in the year, the clocks have gone back and we start to think more about winter – and the ideal time to get into the habit of keeping an eye on an older friend or neighbour. The winter months can be lonely and isolating for those who are less mobile; a knock at the door after dark can be frightening, and cold callers on the phone can leave the recipient feeling vulnerable. The situation isn’t helped by the many rogue traders who try to tout for work in the local area, often suggesting to the home owner that a roof or guttering are in need of repair before winter sets in. This can lead to vulnerable people parting with their cash and getting nothing but shoddy work and a huge dent in their savings in return. Then there are phone scams, which may on the surface seem to be less intrusive, but are equally as dangerous. These can range from callers claiming to be from companies to check non-existent faults on your computer, banks claiming to check your account details and even so-called medical companies, suggesting the need for mobile aids, from electric chairs to stair lifts. Share these tips with family and friends, and older relatives: • Be careful what you say about yourself on social media. • Set your privacy settings. • Keep your media profiles, such as Facebook and LinkedIn, to a minimum (your name), and don’t post your address or date of birth.

• Be very cautious about giving out personal information to people you don’t know – age, address, phone number etc. • In public places, make sure nobody can hear your conversations or look over your shoulder when banking, shopping or making other confidential online transactions. With winter on the way, maybe now is a good time to join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme within your community. Safe Local Trades, covering the PE Postcode area, has worked with many local Neighbourhood Watch groups over the past decade. It has been proven that areas which operate a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme are less likely to be targeted by criminals, rogue traders and distraction burglars. More information can be found at https://www.safelocaltrades.com/consumers/advice/ your-neighbourhood-neighbourhoodwatch Meanwhile, don’t be fooled by rogue or cowboy traders making an offer that seems too good to be true – as it most probably is! Safe Local Trades can recommend trusted and reliable tradespeople in a range of areas – all of which come with a customer seal of approval www.safelocaltrades. com or service providers at www.safelocalservices.com.

Legal

Restrictive Covenants Explained

BY ANNIE RICHES, CONVEYANCING PARALEGAL – DOWNHAM MARKET

When dealing with clients’ property transactions I am frequently asked: “It is my property… why can I not erect a shed in my garden without consent of the developer or keep a caravan on my drive without seeking the original developer’s consent?” I understand it, I had similar thoughts when I bought my first house, however I was aware of the importance of complying with restrictive covenants and the consequences I could face should I decide to “break the rules”. My property forms part of an estate which consists of more than 100 homes. Each property on the estate was sold subject to certain restrictive covenants which include… not to erect a satellite dish on the front of the property... not to park a caravan or motor home within the boundaries of the property... not to make any structural alteration to the property without the prior written consent of the developer… and so on. Restrictive covenants are put in place with good intentions to protect the aesthetic appearance of the estate as a whole. The developer has invested time and money to create homes that will be sold and bought multiple times over with the view that attractive homes on attractive estates will attract buyers.

When you buy a property which is registered at HM Land Registry you are given a copy of your title information document which may refer to other documents such as a Transfer of Part or Conveyance. These documents will comprise your deeds and some could contain restrictive covenants. Although these documents are not attached to the title information document, any document referred to should always be kept with and read in conjunction with the title information document. If you are considering making alterations to your property, it is sensible to check your deeds to make sure you do not require the developer’s consent. Remember that you may also require planning permission or building regulations consent from the local authority. Many homeowners have breached their covenants in some way and if you think that you have, you can write to the enforcer of the covenant (in many cases the developer) and ask them for retrospective consent. Alternatively, you can take out restrictive covenant indemnity insurance to cover the costs of legal proceedings if the developer takes you to court for non-compliance. It is worth noting that the precedent set by Hepworth v Pickles (1900) states that in a situation where a restrictive covenant has been openly and uninterruptedly broken for more than 20 years, it will be presumed that a waiver or release of such covenant has been granted. If you are concerned that you are in breach of a restrictive covenant or want to alter your property in ways that could possibly breach a restrictive covenant, I strongly recommend seeking legal advice.

Pets’ Corner

Diabetes Mellitus in Cats and Dogs – by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

Diabetes mellitus occurs when an animal’s body does not produce enough insulin to regulate their blood sugar levels. Normally when our pets eat, insulin is released as the level of glucose in their blood rises. The insulin lowers their glucose levels by increasing the transfer of glucose from their blood to their body tissues where it is used as an energy source for them. When they suffer from diabetes mellitus, they will use their body’s protein and fat stores for energy instead. Protein can be converted to glucose, but when fat is used, our pets are at risk of developing a serious condition, diabetic ketoacidosis, where ketones build up in their body. Diabetes mellitus is most commonly seen in older dogs and middle-aged overweight cats. However, some younger dogs and cats can develop diabetes mellitus too due to a genetic predisposition. What are the signs to look out for? Initially our pets appear bright and well, but you may see them drinking more, urinating larger amounts, or more frequently, and wanting to eat more. As the diabetes mellitus progresses, you may see that they are losing body weight and condition and becoming weak and lethargic. Vomiting and diarrhoea may also be seen, and some may get cataracts. If left untreated they can become depressed, lose body weight, stop eating, and they may have a strong smell to their urine and later may go into a coma; this has now become an emergency requiring veterinary attention urgently. How is it diagnosed? A physical examination is performed along with blood and urine tests. Your pet will also be checked for any underlying causes of diabetes e.g. obesity, Cushing's disease or pancreatitis. How is it treated? Even though diabetes mellitus can be potentially life threatening, it is an illness we can successfully treat most of the time via an injection of insulin under their skin twice a day.

62

D I S C O V E R I N G

Most dogs and cats are fine with having injections and we will spend time with you making sure you are happy to do this. Sometimes it may take a few weeks to stabilise them, involving check-ups and blood tests. Management of their diet is also required, with their food being given at the same time each day in coordination with their twice daily insulin injections. Their bodyweight will need to be addressed, to make sure they reach an optimal weight. Appropriate, regular exercise of the same quantity and quality is required each day to keep their weight down and help the insulin work better. Any change in their exercise regime can upset keeping their glucose levels stable. Any underlying conditions or diseases will need to be treated and females may need to be spayed to maintain the stability of their hormones. It is advisable to keep a diary, helping us to treat your pet and ensure a good quality of life for them.

Among the many highlights of the Whittlesey Festival held this year was the Schools Art Exhibition on display at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street. All the local schools took part including New Road, Alderman Jacobs, Coates, Park Lane and Sir Harry Smith Community College. Hundreds of visitors came to view more than 150 art pieces and were amazed at the display, demonstrating that Whittlesey youngsters certainly have creative talent. Marija Lysak, who organises the competition on behalf of the festival, said: “I’m constantly in awe of the artwork that is submitted and every year the standard seems to get higher. It’s such a great opportunity for the public to view and appreciate the work from local children and students. “On behalf of the festival committee I would like to thank everyone who took part – they should be extremely proud of themselves and we look forward to next year.” Comments from visitors included: “Brilliant work by all age groups,” “Fantastic work, so much artistic talent in our local schools, budding young artist,” and “Every picture in this event shows the hard work and effort put in, well done to them all for taking part and showing us what they can do. Super stars.”

Got a Poorly Performing Cash ISA? by Eamonn Dorling

You are not alone if you have! Interest rates are still very low compared to what used to be available in years past. Many arrangements that mature automatically switch in to a default account that remains in place until something is done to change it – and few cash ISA arrangements are much over 1.5 percent with most substantially below. Firstly, it is probable that there is no benefit to most individuals in holding on to a cash ISA because a basic rate taxpayer can earn £1000 of interest before paying tax (higher rate taxpayers have a lower amount). Secondly, you could switch some or all the fund in to a pension arrangement and receive tax relief on the contribution (subject to some legislative restrictions that an IFA will help you with). As an example, £10,000 transferred to a personal pension would be boosted by £2500 tax relief – that is a 25% increase). Although the choice of investment fund needs to be considered, and the usual warning that investments can go down as well as up – there is also the ‘risk’ that the fund will perform rather better than the interest rate associated with a cash ISA. When funds are invested in to a pension, access is not permitted before the age of 55, so this might not be wise if access to funds (e.g. for children’s further education) might be needed before the owner reaches 55, but there are many examples where the age restriction is not considered a problem – just a thought. Making best use of tax efficiency should never be the main motivation for managing

household finance, but it can be a powerful benefit within a well-planned arrangement. For a comprehensive review of your financial situation, contact an independent financial adviser that specialises in later life advice and estate preservation. *Past performance is not a good guide to future investment performance, investments can fall as well as increase. ■ Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. TDM Automotive Daniel has worked in the automotive industry since leaving school. As well as handling Class IV and VII MOTs, he also offers servicing, repairs and maintenance work on all makes and models of cars, light commercial vehicles and motorhomes. Having specialised in motorhomes for two years, the move to larger premises has allowed him to accommodate his new eight tonne vehicle-lift with six metre length platforms. This has enabled him to carry out work on larger motorhomes, including twin axles. Daniel said, “I am really pleased with my new premises and the positive response I have had since moving to Whittlesey. Looking forward, I will continue to provide a reliable, professional and friendly service at a competitive price”.

How to Date a Building From its Brickwork

W

– by Jen Barback, Curator of Whittlesey Museum

hen walking through a town centre or on holiday you may wonder how old the houses are. Unless you are lucky enough to find one with a plaque giving the date it was built, you will need to do some detective work – one way to date a building is to look at the bricks that make it up. You can probably already identify ‘old bricks’ (pre-1600s) at a glance – at that time brick wasn’t a very popular building material and so they tended to be handmade for particular projects and be flatter and longer than bricks today. They were often red due to iron in the clay – as can be seen in some of the ‘red brick’ colleges in Cambridge. The Great Fire of London in 1666 marked the start of mass use of bricks – though initially only for the fireplace and chimney at one end of a thatched cottage – when flammable housing became a national concern. At first, bricks were laid in no particular pattern when building up a wall, but gradually a standard design called ‘English bond’ was developed. Before cavity walls, bricks were usually laid in walls two bricks thick, which allowed the bricks to be laid along the wall (showing their long sides, or ‘stretchers’ as well as across the wall (showing their small ends, or ‘headers’). English bond has rows of headers and stretchers alternating, and was one of the first designs used, although it was largely replaced by ‘Flemish bond’ by the early 18th century. Flemish bond uses headers and stretchers alternately in each row, the headers being lined up with the middle of the stretchers. As the first large-scale brickyards started up, the shape of bricks was standardised and by the 1800s bricks usually had the size and shape that we think of today. Brick tax, imposed between 1784-1850, encouraged some manufacturers to make bricks larger so that fewer were needed for each project. Brick tax also briefly encouraged ‘Rat bond’, which is Flemish bond except the bricks are turned onto their sides to make taller, thinner walls that need fewer bricks to reach the same height. The ‘frog’ (a recess in each of the larger sides) wasn’t introduced until around 1800, although the frogs are usually hidden when looking at a built wall. From the mid-19th century, mechanisation of the brickmaking process gave ‘modern’ looking bricks with sharp edges, sometimes with textured patterns

74

Whittlesea

pressed into the sides. Victorian bricks come in a wide range of colours showing regional variation in clay and deliberate attempts at colouring by altering conditions in the kiln – in Whittlesey, Victorian bricks are often pale yellow. In the late Victorian period, English bond had a brief comeback, though often eked out with several rows of stretchers between each row of headers to use fewer bricks, which is known as ‘Garden bond’. As red bricks came back into fashion in the 1870s they were initially used as an expensive decorative accent or as a posh façade on the front of a building, until houses were once again made entirely from red brick in the period before the First World War. Damp courses were not used in the bottom of walls until after the Public Health Act of 1875. Cavity walls also first began to be used at this time. What we think of today as ‘brick pattern’ – rows of identical rectangles offset by half a brick so that the gaps between one row fall in the centre of the bricks in the rows above and below – is called ‘Stretcher bond’ and only became standard from the 1920s onwards. Two thin stretcher bond walls are often built with a small gap between them to make a cavity wall that helps to insulate a building. Until the 1920s, walls were usually glued together with mortar, a mixture of sharp sand and lime. In the last century, cement has become more usual, suiting the harder bricks of today. Modern houses may imitate decorative coloured brick patterns found on Victorian houses nearby in order to blend in with the look of the local area but can easily be told apart with their cement, stretcher bond and sharp-edged modern bricks with little wear and tear.
