JANUARY 2019
Introduction
Welcome to Your January Issue.
Over the past 12 months I have visited – and reported on – a number of businesses in the town, both old and new. It is always interesting to meet those involved in other industry sectors to see how they are faring in today’s tough economic environment and encouraging to hear how their hard work has invariably helped make them a success. It is gratifying to discover that despite the doom merchants that have been in the Media in light of the Brexit talks many businesses are flourishing by offering a professional and personal service to the local community. I hope to report on many more success stories throughout the year as it is vital for towns such as ours to have strong local businesses who are determined to serve the needs of the population. Good luck to all local businesses. I hope 2019 will be a fantastic year for you all…

Well Christmas seems a distant past and now the focus is fully on the New Year. It is a truism that time really does seem to fly by and although we are now in the midst of Winter it won’t be too long before the weather improves and the daylight hours become longer. Over the coming months we will be bringing you all the latest news from the local community but to do so we need your help, so please remember to send in all your stories to the magazine so that we can report on your activities each month throughout the year. There are many individuals and groups who work hard to make our community an even better place to live and work and you can be assured we will do our best to bring you details of what’s happening in your town throughout 2019.

Investigating Toxicity
e are surrounded by substances our bodies do not like and could cause harm. These substances can be in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink or the things we touch.
Examples include carbon monoxide, chemicals used to treat water, additives in foods, varnishes we use to treat wood etc. These substances exist in trace quantities but nevertheless are toxic to our bodies. Toxicity is not an advent of modern living although it has vastly increased our exposure to it. Fortunately, the body has developed ways of dealing with it. Our skin provides the first barrier. The skin is a tightly knit barrier colonised by bacteria and covered in an oily substance which contains immune cells. All of these attributes contribute to keeping the toxins out. This is why we can have paint, glue and even use strong substances like white spirit on our skin without getting sick. If the toxins get through this barrier, i.e. if we ingest or breathe them in then the next line of defence is our liver. Here the liver acts as a detoxifier. It shifts through what is in the blood separating it into bad and good. Those that are bad are reacted with other chemicals to nullify their toxicity. It is then sent to a number of places; either the:
• intestines for removal via our stools • bladder for removal via our urine • skin for removal via our sweat If the three routes of disposal are jam packed, then the body has no choice but to store it. It does this within the fat cells of the body. The fat cells act as an insulating container. Where we must be careful is that like any containment system, things degrade. The nullified toxins degrade as do the fat cells and so as time goes by the chances of a leak increases. We must also acknowledge that the amount of exposure to toxins is continually increasing as our technological advancements and our effect on the climate increases. Therefore, the risk of overload and greater storage increases. The simplest way to mitigate against toxic overload is to limit your exposure to chemicals. Wearing gloves when handling household cleaning products and cleaning in well ventilated rooms, minimising processed foods, filtering water, wearing gloves and masks when performing DIY tasks, performing leisure activities in rural areas (e.g. a run by the roadside is not as healthy as we think. Think of all the toxins we are inhaling), etc. These are all simple ways we can reduce our toxicity levels and increase the likelihood of a healthier later life.

DO YOU NEED TO SEE A PODIATRIST? Podiatry is simply the new name for chiropody. It is a branch of medicine devoted to the study and diagnosis, and medical treatment, of disorders of the foot, ankle, and lower leg. The name changed from chiropody to podiatry in 1993, so that the UK was in line with all other English speaking countries, in using the internationally recognised name for a foot specialist. A podiatrist will usually have attended a university for three years, to study full time for a Degree in Podiatry.
with the pain of ingrown toenails, or corns and calluses. Many feel a trip to the beauty salon is all that’s needed. Covering up a fungal nail infection, with a splash of colourful polish, does not resolve the underlying problem.
Here are four reasons to see a podiatrist:
4) Need footwear advice? – Feet come in all shapes and sizes. Choosing suitable footwear, somewhat, determines your long-term foot health. A number of people have developed problems with their feet over time as a result of wearing poorly fitting shoes. The right pair of shoes should effectively hug the foot and provide a high-level of comfort.
1) Give your feet an MOT – Even if your feet are in a generally good state, an appointment with a podiatrist, every so often, can help to keep your feet in tip-top condition. It’s easy to overlook problems with verrucas, cracked heels, and ingrown toenails; however, these issues can eventually result in painful conditions and infections. A podiatrist can treat a range of issues including corns, calluses, athlete’s foot, foot odour, flat feet and bunions. 2) Manage the pain in your feet – Putting up with foot pain is uncomfortable and unnecessary. A visit to your local podiatrist is all that’s needed to nurse your feet back to full health. Don’t suffer in silence
3) Do you suffer from foot odour? – It’s common to suffer from foot perspiration and odours from timeto-time. However, if the problem persists, seeking expert advice and treatment from a podiatrist can help resolve the issues quickly and effectively.
Our highly skilled podiatrists provide clinics at The New Queen Street Surgery in Syers Lane, Whittlesey on Tuesdays and Fridays. For more information ‘Like’ us on Facebook, or call us on 01354 651200 to book an appointment.

How to Bite the (Nutri) Bullet – Resolve to Just Be Yourself!
L
ast year, I wrote an hilarious article, (even if I do say so myself!) about the New Year, and I’ve been sat here for an hour trying to write one to top it. But, one of my new, New Year’s resolutions is to not beat myself up; to push myself to be better, but also to accept when something is good and give myself praise for it, instead of constantly trying to top it. Also, I can’t stop laughing at myself and this funny article. So, enjoy, and Happy New Year all. The New Year is upon us, Christmas gets put away for another year, the holiday adverts start on TV and we’re all sat with a box of ‘Celebrations’, before starting our “New Year’s diets” for the sixth year running.
I’d never been one to try and change at the start of the year- but holiday ads mean bikini bodies and bikini bodies mean me looking down at ‘Tina the talking tummy’ and ‘cellulite Sally’ and feeling, a little… bleugh! So last year, I decided enough was enough. This was my year. I jogged to the shop, bought some veg and a NutriBullet and there was no stopping me. So, I thought I’d let you into my personal New Year’s Resolutions from last year…and how I’m still learning from them. Day one - I’ve started my diet, the NutriBullet is in the dishwasher from my “breakfast smoothie!” Which was very…green. I drank it fast, but I feel good. I’ve done a total of 25 sit-ups and 15 squats, and do you know what? I think I may have lost weight already! Today I tried ‘courgetti spaghetti’ and that’s all I have to say on that matter. I’ve also been a lot more organised- I’m so glad I bought all of those notebooks and diaries for my to-do lists and what not! Feeling brighter than ever, why didn’t I start sooner? I’ve got this! Day four - Still keeping on, I’ve got endless lists and recipes stuck on my fridge! Still feeling fresh as a daisy and, it’s not been a walk in the park, but it’s all good. Nearly had a moment where I gave it all up, put the lists in the shredder and bought a large pizza but, alas, I am strong. Day five - The healthy smoothies are starting to bother me. Last night I had a dream that I devoured a chocolate cake the size of a small child. I’m still
10 64
D I S C O V E R I N G
Whittlesea Wisbech
keeping up with it, but Lord help me if I even smell an ounce of chocolate! Day seven - Is a week in too early for a cheat day? Day ten - Ten days have passed, I feel as though I am a wilting flower. Whilst everybody slept last night, I snuck downstairs and demolished a loaf of bread - no butter, no jam. Dry, white bread. I’m an animal. February 1st – Hmm, well it seems a month or so has passed, and, I don’t actually know where my NutriBullet went, I put all the vegetables in the bin (they were starting to taunt me with awful remarks) and I’m still the same size as I was last year. Back fat Betty and I, we’re still companions. But here’s where the moral of the story lies. You see, I’m looking back at my 2017 New Year’s resolutions and thinking that I failed. However, did I really? I didn’t turn into a supermodel, I didn’t become the most organised person, who wakes up at 6am and drinks kale smoothies, (which are as awful as they sound.) I realised that actually, I don’t need fad diets. Instead, I found healthy foods that I actually enjoy, and didn’t have to force down, and I encouraged myself by realising that I don’t need this huge change. I don’t need to re-invent myself and actually, for all of us doing that every single year, what are we doing?! We are literally setting ourselves up for disappointment! Last year, I didn’t change entirely- but I changed little things to make myself happier. Small improvements, day by day. Whether it’s losing that little bit of weight, getting more organised or even learning to pamper yourself and relax more. Change your life, sure. But don’t torture yourself to make you any other version of you than you were meant to be. And as long as you’re healthy within yourself and happy…then really, what needs to change anyway? Be brave, safe, and have a year to remember!

Slimming World
Self-Kindness is the Key to Weight Loss...
W
eight loss experts from Whittlesey and Eastrea Slimming World who run the Slimming World groups says that if people want to lose weight for good this year then they need to learn to be kinder to themselves when things go wrong.
Anna revealed that a new Slimming World survey of 1722 slimmers found that almost everyone who had tried to lose weight in the past (98 percent) had experienced a slip-up where they went off-track in a way that they worried would affect their weight loss journey. After they lapsed, 84% of slimmers automatically criticised themselves, calling themselves ‘weak’, ‘stupid’ and ‘a failure’ – words they would never have used to describe someone else in their position. This harsh criticism was found to lead to comfort eating or giving up on those diets completely. As a result, 78% were unsuccessful with their weight loss, with at least 47% gaining weight. The survey found that at Slimming World, members had learned how to reduce how critical they are of themselves when things go wrong and have instead become more self-reassuring. As a result of recognising that they’re only human and applauding their own determination, the research found that Slimming World members are now less likely to comfort eat and more likely to get back on track within a day or two, and more likely to lose weight and keep it off. In the survey, 84% of Slimming World members went on to lose weight after a lapse. 12

Charlene who lost 3 stone 7lbs and now helps others in Whittlesey to shed the pounds, says: “As someone who had struggled with my weight for many years, I had tried lots of different diets in the past. Life would always get in the way at some point though and I’d go off track. It would knock my confidence and I’d end up feeling like a failure and like I couldn’t stick at anything.” Gemma says: “When you have an unhealthy relationship with food, as I did at the time, comfort eating can feel like the only way to make yourself feel better. I’d turn to pizza but afterwards I’d feel even more guilty and empty and before long I’d have given up completely. “Since joining Slimming World my outlook has changed completely. With the support of other people who have experienced the same thing I gradually started to realise that I wasn’t the only one who this happened to. We’re all human and we all have our off days, the important thing is that we’re able forgive ourselves and draw a line under it. Helping others to do this in my own group is very rewarding.” For more information about the local Slimming World groups in Whittlesey and Eastrea please visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk JANUARY 2019

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE IN WHITTLESEY AND ACROSS NORTH EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE – By Steve Barclay MP
H
appy New Year to everyone in Whittlesey and across North East Cambridgeshire. Selfimprovement is a big focus this time of year with getting fit, healthy and being more active amongst the top New Year’s resolutions for 2019.
Now the festivities are over, it is a good time of year to take up a new sport or become more active. Active Fenland is leading the way in helping people to get active which is both good for their health and provides good fun through taking up new hobbies. I have seen first-hand the fantastic impact Active Fenland has had on our community since 2015, after I secured £250,000 for the council to fund the three-year project and drive participation in sport. Thanks to the work of the Active Fenland team the programme of walking football, no strings badminton, table tennis, swim fit and much more has been a great success. In 2018 a further £325,000 was awarded to Fenland and Peterborough to continue their work for a further three years.
(Wisbech) has already signed up to this and I look forward to hearing how the programme benefits the employees who work there. If you are interested in taking up a new sport, meeting new people and being more active, I urge you to get involved in some of the activities which Active Fenland is providing in your local area. No matter what your age, ability or level of mobility there is something on offer, from walking football, chair-based exercises, beginners running sessions and activities for children. Information about what is on offer is readily available on the Active Fenland Facebook page @ActiveFenland or online at: www.newvisionfitness.co.uk/whats-on.html I would like to congratulate Active Fenland activator Lauren Bremner and everyone who has either taken part or helped run sessions. It is great to see the wide range of affordable activities which have been made available across North East Cambridgeshire, making sport accessible to all.
The Active Fenland team has also supported the development of Parkrun in Whittlesey and the Junior Parkrun in Wisbech and has some excellent new projects in the pipeline such as working with local businesses to promote staying active and being healthy in the workplace. Greencore

Business Spotlight
Antidote Offers Customers a
Healthy Choice
A
ntidote is a new cafeteria that has opened in Whittlesey offering a range of healthy food and juices.
The business, located at 2B Broad Street, specialises in providing a range of homemade, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan foods and juices. The business was opened at the beginning of November 2018 by Liliya Geneva and her husband Bogdan. Liliya, who comes from Bulgaria, believes that stress and poor eating habits can affect your health and your life to a much greater extent than you think. Healthy foods – and juices, in particular – can be your pass to great health, amazing well-being and huge levels of energy you could not imagine existed and so Antidote is offering a wide range of healthy breakfasts and lunches. She said: “We have been pleased with how the business has been received since opening in the town and have already attracted a number of regular customers. “Before I opened in Whittlesey, I used to visit markets in my van, which I still have, but this is better because people will now know where they can find me all through the week and not just on market days. “Our food and juices are homemade, healthy and fresh. I use organic products as I think a healthy diet is very important. J A NUA RY 2019
“I have always been interested in the importance of food and diets and have my national nutritional certificates. I am also currently studying functional medicine that helps address healthcare needs.” Liliya and Bogdan have lived in the UK for the past seven years and have been in business for the past three years. Although residing in Peterborough, Liliya believes that Whittlesey is the ideal location for her business. She said: “I saw that the premises were near a number of other traditional businesses and as I like small, friendly communities decided to open here instead of Peterborough which is more commercial.” Antidote is open from Monday to Saturday from 8am-5pm at 2B Broad Street, Whittlesey PE7 1HA. Your Garden
JANUARY Gardening Tips January is a good time to relax, as the weather does not allow for days of work at the allotment or vegetable plot, although as you will see there are a number of jobs that can still be done. Sit back with a good book on gardening and a seed catalogue and make a plan! Reflect on what grew well, what went wrong and if it can be improved on this year. How about trying to grow something a little unusual for a change, away from your usual standard fruit and veg? If there are any areas of your plot that still need a winter digging, then make sure that the soil is not frozen or waterlogged - (if the soil sticks to your boots keep off it, as this will only compact the soil). Well-rotted manure, or organic material, can be added to the soil surface and it will become incorporated naturally. Also a good idea when you are digging is to apply lime to the surface at 100g per square metre (3oz per square yard), especially if you grew brassicas the year before. Getting the soil prepared now will save time feeding later in the year and will often enhance crop growth and yield. Towards the end of the month, seed potatoes should be available and you can start chitting them ready for planting: put them rose side uppermost and use old egg boxes or seed trays. Weather permitting, there are a few jobs that can be tackled: • Prune apple and pear trees but not stone fruits such as cherry and damson; they should be summer pruned. • Plant bare-rooted trees and bushes. • At this time of year rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, or even a pile of straw, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. • Protect plants from cold and check stakes and ties. • Start a bean trench by digging down about 60cm and then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste, cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down. • It’s a good time of year for a spot of cleaning: seed trays and plant pots can be cleaned with a mild bleach solution to kill diseases that may have carried over to the new seedlings. • Draw the soil up around the stalks of cabbages and winter cauliflowers to just under the first set of leaves. Check over Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli and support them with a strong stake to prevent them from being blown over in high winds. • In non-freezing weather, shallots can be planted. Shallots take longer to grow than onions, but if planted now, should be ready earlier in the summer. Here’s to a year of fruitful gardening!

Once again a fantastic night was had by all at the Whittlesey Extravaganza. Lorraine Bingley, the Director of Malcolm James Estate Agents, was overwhelmed by the amount of people that joined her and her staff for this yearly event. Lorraine said: “The last three years have been hard without Malcolm, who is sadly missed by us all, but the fantastic turn out and atmosphere on Saturday was a wonderful boost and makes all the hard work worthwhile. “Just seeing everyone including all our customers past and present and the friends we have made over the 22 years was an absolute joy and pleasure for us all and even an appearance from the Whittlesey Lady Mayor and her husband. “Having participated in the Whittlesey Extravaganza for many years, the last two years we have sponsored the Photo Booth supplied by Lewis Slack of Ace Tones which once again was a great success and really popular with the children and families. Our famous chocolate fountain and goodies also went down a treat, enjoyed by both children and adults. “On the night over 500 mince pies were consumed together with the delicious home made mulled wine which was much appreciated by the adults due to the cold weather and made by our staff member Bev.” Lorraine would like to thank her staff Bev, Denyse, Julie for all the help and preparation throughout the week and a special thanks to Jordan, Dave, Mick, Ryan, Andy, Kerry and Steve for their team support during the day. Malcolm James Estate Agents feel that the Whittlesey Extravaganza is getting better and better and this year has been one of the best so far, which is a credit to all the organisers and everybody involved in making this such an enjoyable event.

If, like many people, you choose to hit the High Street straight after Christmas for your seasonal spend up – then don’t let the pickpockets spoil your festive bargainhunting fun. While you may be armed with a postChristmas shopping wish-list, you can guarantee that the pickpockets and purse dippers will be out in force to cause heartache and misery. According to last year’s police statistics across a number of UK cities, December 27th is when shoppers are traditionally out in force after Boxing Day and is the most popular day for thieves to strike. In Birmingham alone, £20,000 worth of valuables were taken by pickpockets during the festive season, whilst in Cardiff that figure was £27,000. As you would suspect, phones – in particular expensive ones – were top of the list, credit and debit cards were next, followed by purses, wallets, handbags and jewellery. It’s so easy when we are busy and in a rush not to zip up bags or put phones away properly, but it is so very important to be extra vigilant and careful at this time of year, especially in crowded shops and whilst in queues.

Legal
Getting Employment Law Right BY KIM CROSS, ASSOCIATE SOLICITOR
for years, only finding out that the law is out of date after they have encountered a problem.
If you run your own business, many issues can give you sleepless nights and one of the most common of these is a difficulty with an employee. Tribunal claim fees were abolished last year so if an employee wants to bring a claim they can now do so with little risk. Since then, the number of claims to employment tribunals has risen, reaching around 110,000 over the past year. This figure doesn’t count claims that were either dropped or settled before getting to tribunal. Despite the high number of claims, only 536 unfair dismissal claims ended with the employee receiving compensation but the time and expense of going through a claim is something employers will wish to avoid, and by taking certain steps you can reduce your exposure to a claim. As a starting point, you should make sure that the essentials are in place: • Use written contracts of employment. Give these some thought so they aren’t just generic but cover what you need. If you have an issue with an employee, the contract will give you and the employee something to go back to. • Review your contracts periodically. Employment law changes all the time and employers often make the mistake of using the same contract
• Put basic policies in place and use them. Disciplinary policies and grievance policies are standard, but it is also helpful to have policies covering incapacity, the use of social media and work computers etc. As with employment contracts, these can be drafted to cover the specific needs of your business. Policies like this help managers and staff know what’s expected. • Have at least a basic understanding of the types of claims that employees can make. If you have an understanding of your obligations and what might get you in trouble, you are less likely to find yourself in difficulties. For example, one common mistake that employers often make is to dismiss someone who is frequently off sick, under the assumption that the employee can’t bring an unfair dismissal claim because they don’t have two years’ service. This might be right, but if the reason that the employee is off sick is due to a disability (which can include some forms of mental illness), they could bring a discrimination claim which is potentially more costly than an unfair dismissal claim. Most employers experience difficulties with an employee at some point. The best advice is, when in doubt, seek legal advice. An employment solicitor is the best place to go for advice rather than relying on the experiences of others and, crucially, get advice before you take action. You may have valid grounds for wanting to dismiss someone but if you don’t handle the procedure correctly, you may end up paying compensation for a claim that you could have avoided by getting good legal advice.

History
Survivor and Hero of WW1
A
– by Chris Thorpe, Whittlesey Museum volunteer
n intriguing letter was donated to the Whittlesey Museum collections recently which set volunteers on a journey to research and shine a light on acts of bravery and courage demonstrated by a Whittlesey soldier in World War One. 3rd January 1917 Dear Mr. Death,
I feel that I must send you a line to convey my heartfelt congratulations to you on your sons [sic] receiving the D.C.M. an honour which to my mind is the highest he could obtain. Most people consider the V.C. to be the highest but many of them have been won for far less than what your son has done from all the accounts that I have heard of him. I have only recently come out to the battalion and was not with him when he won his laurels, but I can assure you that I look upon it has [sic] a very great privilege to be served by a man of your sons [sic] type, any officer who has him under him would be proud of it. In the short time that I have been here, I have myself found that his courage and good example have had extremely good influence on the men. If the army had been composed of men of his type, we should have had peace by now. May I take the opportunity, though somewhat late, to wish you the best of good wishes for the New Year, that your son may be spared to come back to you in 1917 in peace. Yours truly, F. Jones Our research shows that the recipient of the honour was Sergeant James ‘Bertie’ Death of the Cambridgeshire Regiment. The citation published in the London Gazette on January 26th, 1917 reads: Distinguished Conduct Medal: For conspicuous gallantry in action. He carried out a dangerous reconnaissance, and later, led his platoon forward with great courage and determination. James Bertram Death was born in Whittlesea in 1898 and lived at 12, Ramsey Road. He had been a labourer by trade but enrolled in the Cambridgeshire Regiment in 1913, aged 18 years old. Following the outbreak of war, his battalion travelled to France in February 1915. Only three months later James, now promoted to corporal, distinguished himself during a dangerous raid and was mentioned in dispatches. He was praised for his gallantry in helping to organise the situation and rescue the wounded men on that day. 38

James Bertram Death
By November 1916 James, still only 21 years old and now promoted to sergeant, was fighting on the Somme. He was commanding a platoon and was tasked with capturing and holding a bridge over the River Ancre. One eyewitness recalled how Death led 36 men ‘over the top’ in broad daylight, captured and held the bridge. Unfortunately, thirty of the platoon died and James himself was wounded. It is for this action that he received one of the armed forces highest honours, the Distinguished Conduct Medal. The award ceremony took place in the United Kingdom where James was receiving treatment for the effects of gas poisoning suffered in early 1917. It was the cruel effects of this poisoning that finally led to his discharge from the army in early 1918. On his discharge he held the rank of Company Sergeant Major and was described as “honest, sober and intelligent”. He died aged 60 years in 1958. As the commemorations for the centenary of World War One closed in 2018 it is an honour to recall the achievements of one courageous survivor. Risk of Property Investment by Eamonn Dorling
Although the fall out from the Brexit negotiations is unknown at the time of writing, there have been warnings from institutions such as the Bank of England that some property in some areas might suffer a reduction in value. This could be an opportunity should you be in the market to buy, it might be a threat if you are an owner. Risks could include negative equity if you have borrowed funds to purchase, or the anticipated returns on selling the property might be lower than planned. If you are a landlord, it might be argued that the rental income when compared to the lower value results in a better return. Of course, lower property values could feed through to reduced rent (or supply and demand could result in higher rental opportunities). From the above it is clear that individual advice will depend on many factors – there is no simple action that will benefit everybody. One message is reinforced though; If possible, diversify your investment portfolio as widely as possible to ensure you do not ‘have all your investment eggs in one basket’. For liquidity (the option to cash in some or all your assets), property might not be your best option because most properties must be disposed of entirely or not at all – an investment fund can provide any amount at the time it will do most good. A scenario some retirees contemplate might be ownership of the main residence, a lump sum from a pension that could be invested in a holiday property or a ‘buy to let’. If most of your assets is switched in to more bricks and mortar, your estate is both inflexible and very
concentrated and there could be Inheritance Tax or Capital Gains Tax issues that are difficult to overcome when concentrated in this way. Changes in legislation have reduced the attractiveness of property investment (rather different from main residence ownership). If concerns outlined by the Bank of England come to pass, and planning to offset the potential impact of taxation is not taken – an unwary investor can be disappointed. My advice is to speak with an Independent Financial Adviser who will work in your interests if you need help working through and ask about Cash Flow Modelling. Government legislation can change, and observations are made with information available at the time of writing. ■ Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Getting It Sorted volunteer Emma Chapman says why not go eco this year and make a resolution to recycle more? You’ll be helping yourself, animals and the environment! Did you know that it is estimated that 13,350 tonnes of glass are thrown out in the UK after the Christmas period every year?! Glass can be recycled over and over again without losing any of its properties but why not get creative? You can paint it, decorate it, use it for flowers, to store loose change or to put homemade sauces or jams into. Electrical items make up a big part of waste over the Christmas period. Old, broken or outdated items often find themselves abandoned in the normal household waste in January. This does not need to be the case. Electrics such as toothbrushes, hairdryers, laptops, phones, smartphones, TVs, DVD players, drills, curling tongs amongst many others can all be recycled. You can take them to charity shops or pass them onto someone you know. You can check with electrical shops to see if you can trade them in or they will take them for parts. If they truly are at the end of their lifespan though then they need to go to your local recycling centre where they will be sorted and start a new life as something else. Got wrapping paper and decorations that have been used but are still in good condition? Save them for next year or incorporate them into something else. Check out Pinterest and other creative websites for fun and arty DIY ideas. Remember though, glittery and metallic wrapping paper can’t be recycled and always remove the Sellotape! Why not go even more eco this year and become a Getting It Sorted Volunteer? You can learn about events going on in your area, facts about recycling and ways in which you can help tackle the war on waste. To sign up and for more information visit www.fenland.gov.uk/volunteers
HELP FIGHT LONELINESS More than half (52 percent) of adults in the East of England who feel lonely fear something will happen to them and no one will notice, and almost a third (31%) of adults often feel alone, like they have no one to turn to. That’s according to new research released by the British Red Cross who polled more than 4000 UK adults and found that half (50%) of people in the East of England feel always, often or sometimes lonely. Tricia Earp, director for independent living and crisis response at British Red Cross, said: “Loneliness and social isolation doesn’t discriminate. Life circumstances can change in the blink of an eye, meaning it can happen to anyone, no matter your age or background. “The British Red Cross is there every day, helping people connect with their communities. A donation this winter could help ensure we continue this vital work supporting those most vulnerable.” Text KINDNESS to 70141 and donate £5 to help make sure support is there for those who need it most. MEMORIES OF PETER BOIZOT A local man has paid tribute to Peterborough businessman Peter Boizot MBE who has died aged 89. Professor Brian J Ford, who lives in Eastrea, was a friend of Mr Boizot, who was best known as the founder of Pizza Express as well as being a former owner of Peterborough United Football Club. He also used to publish the monthly magazine Boz, for which Brian wrote a regular column. Mr Boizot also owned Kettner's, the Soho restaurant, where this photograph was taken of Brian (shown far right) and his wife Jan dining with Peter (far left) and his business manager.
We are pleased to let you know that the next meeting of the Business Forum will be on Wednesday 30th January at The Falcon Hotel, Whittlesey, 6pm for 6.30pm start. Guest speaker to be confirmed. See you on the 30th. Chair Joe Jennings
Brian said: "We both attended King's School and in our different times we both chaired the Old Petriburgians society. Peter was a good friend and he will be sadly missed."
CALL FOR MEDICAL TALKS Practising pharmacists across the Eastern region are looking for pre-existing local groups so they can come along and talk about healthcare and getting the most out of your medicines. Up to half of all patients do not take their medicines as recommended and at least six percent of emergency hospital readmissions are caused by avoidable adverse reactions to medicines. 'Let's Talk About Medicines' sessions are funded by the Eastern Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) to help support patients, carers and members of the public to be confident that they are using prescriptions and drugs properly and effectively. Between 30-50% of medicines prescribed for long-term conditions are not taken as intended. This can mean they don’t work properly and can cost them for prescriptions that they may not need. Charity Spotlight
Children’s Charity Appeals to Whittlesey for Support
T
he Young People’s Counselling Service is a charity with more than two decades of history and deep roots in Whittlesey.
It was in the bustling market town close to the edge of the Fens that the charity was born, offering a free and confidential service that can be accessed by anyone aged between 11 and 16 years old in emotional difficulty. This is a legacy that the charity is very proud of and although we now deliver the service further afield in Peterborough, Yaxley and Ramsey, we hold Whittlesey close to our hearts. However, with rising demand for the service in Whittlesey and a lack of government funding, we rely solely on the generosity of donors, sponsors and fundraisers to keep the charity afloat. Fortunately, we have amazing support in the town from organisations such as the Rotary Club of Whittlesey, Whittlesey Round Table, Whittlesey Business Forum, businesses such as the Letter B public house and the Mayor herself, who has recently nominated YPCS as one of her personal charities.
anxiety, low self-esteem and bullying, self-harm, abuse, addiction, distress through bereavement or loss, depression and difficulty with decision making are all areas our team of fully qualified counsellors tackle on a weekly basis. Compounded by an explosion in the use of social media and a whole host of new pressures on young people, the importance of our service cannot be overstated. We are therefore appealing to Whittlesey businesses, organisations and individuals to help us raise funds to reduce our waiting list. Every penny raised will help us to help local young people. Please see our website for ways you can help fundraise for us in 2019. Donations can be made via www.justgiving.com/ youngpersonscounselling or you contact us at www.ypcs.uk or admin@ypcs.uk
Despite this amazing support, our waiting list continues to grow and we are not alone in recognising a mental health crisis amongst young people and a growing demand for our service. Family and relationship difficulties, loneliness and 48

The Local Music Scene
The Bear Facts - by Dave Bailey
This Month: Bells and Hankies A happy and healthy New Year to you all, I hope Santa has brought you all nice shiny new instruments to play during 2019. January is normally a time of the year for reflection, starting to put into place New Year’s resolutions and sitting by the fire in the warm. Traditions, however, would point to a lean time of the year for land workers, one of the driving forces behind many local traditions, and visions of ice and snow with difficult travelling conditions. With all this in mind one of the area’s biggest music and dance festivals rolls into Whittlesey to celebrate the Straw Bear from the 18th to 20th. With an amazing diversity of music and dance styles throughout the weekend the colourful dancers and musicians from all over Europe and beyond arrive in the town to follow the bear, oh and drink the odd pint or two! Whether you are a fan of folk music or one of the ‘not for me brigade’, the ability to play an instrument on the march (or in some cases a saunter) in cold conditions has to be applauded. Keeping in tempo with a dance team and fellow musicians or squeezed into a usually very warm public house with hardly room to swing a hankie let alone a cat, after several beers, is not conducive to playing all the right notes or in the right order, but years of practice usually results in a polished performance from both dancers and musicians. The procession of the dance teams on the Saturday from the Manor to the respective J ANUA RY 2019
dance locations always draws a big crowd and the road closures make for a safe, family friendly environment. With the finale on the square at 4pm and then the traditional bear burning at Sir Harry Smith Community College on the Sunday. Further information on the official events can be found at www.strawbear.org.uk Across the world traditional dance and local folk music has been on the decline as local organisations have found it hard to attract younger performers even when the colour and spectacle of these festivals should appeal. Thankfully there has been a resurgence locally but many of the dance sides are still in need of musicians, dancers and organisers especially on dance days. If you are interested and can play an instrument various dance teams would love you to approach them on the day or even through social media as they are always on the lookout for both soloists and accompanists. Flute, recorder, piano accordion, concertina, melodeons and percussion are always in demand as these instruments form the backbone for and dance teams’ music. Have a great Straw Bear festival and I hope to see you around the town. We (Holly & The Boatmen) will be playing our usual ‘After the Bear’ set (not so folky) at The Falcon from 5pm, so come and say hi. The regular open mic and acoustic sessions continue in the New Year as normal and information with respect to times and locations’ listings can be found at: www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm

COLTS GET NEW CLUBHOUSE
looking forward to having the new clubhouse in place for the 2019/20 season.”
Ramsey Colts Football Development will this month celebrate getting a new clubhouse. It is expected to be delivered to the site this month and the club plan a ‘grand opening event’ this summer to mark this big occasion. The Colts have been seeking to deliver a purposebuilt club house since their formation in 1995 and finally secured a grant via the Football Foundation Facilities Fund last year after moving to a new ground on a long-term lease. Linden Homes through Huntingdonshire District Council has contributed major funding towards delivery of the new clubhouse. The company, whose St Thomas Park development is located within the town, provided the funds as part of its Section 106 contributions. The money was released early by the housebuilder to allow the Colts to raise their full share of the project funding costs and for the project to commence. The modular clubhouse was assembled by Integra Buildings at its factory in Hull. Andrew Hodgson, chairman of Ramsey Colts FD, said: “We are extremely grateful to Linden Homes for allowing this Section 106 money to be released to us earlier than they were required to do so. The money when added to the funds already raised made up the full percentage of funding which the Colts were required to raise before the project could commence under the terms of the Football Foundation grant. We are all absolutely delighted that the project is now fully funded, and we are 56

Robert Church, managing director of Linden Homes Eastern, said: “We are delighted to have contributed towards Ramsey Colts’ clubhouse, which I am sure will be enjoyed for many years to come. Investing in communities is something we at Linden Homes pride ourselves in, and I am delighted that we have provided so much value to the club. Ramsey has a wonderful close-knit community and rich culture, which is why so many couples and families want to move here.” Councillor John Palmer, executive councillor for partnerships and well-being, said: “Better facilities will ensure people have a greater experience when participating in sport or leisure and help create that all important habit for life. Ramsey Colts is an important club within the local community and is in need of new changing facilities, so it is great that the Section 106 contribution has been able to support the club’s funding application to the Football Foundation.”

Matt Hunt, Freedom Leisure’s operations director, and Dan Palframan, Freedom Leisure area manager, were joined by local councillors, along with Freedom Leisure’s mascot Jim Trainer and staff members at the George Campbell Leisure Centre to formally mark day one. “We are delighted to have been selected by Fenland District Council as their leisure partner to ensure these essential community facilities remain where they belong,” said Matt Hunt. “This is a long-term partnership with a huge amount of investment which we hope demonstrates our genuine commitment to the district and its public leisure services.” It’s said with £1.1million of investment due to be made, there are lots of exciting facility developments and improvements in the pipeline including extended and refurbished gym and studio spaces, state-of-the art fitness kit and improved catering offerings, plus the recruitment of an active communities executive and the introduction of many new community-focused outreach programmes, to support everyone in the district no matter of their age or ability.
NEW FENLAND LEISURE PARTNERSHIP STARTS Councillor Mark Buckton, portfolio holder for leisure and young people Fenland District Council, has met with senior representatives from Freedom Leisure at the start of a new 15-year partnership which will see enhanced leisure facilities for Whittlesey residents.

Fenland’s four leisure centres – Manor in Whittlesey, Chatteris, George Campbell in March and Hudson in Wisbech – will be managed by the not-for-profit leisure trust in partnership with, and on behalf of, Fenland District Council – giving them a bright future and supporting the people of Fenland to be more active and healthy. Councillor Mark Buckton said: “We are really looking forward to working with Freedom Leisure over the coming years and seeing the many benefits it will bring to the whole of Fenland. Freedom Leisure has great experience of working with councils across England and Wales to make the most of local leisure services and has an excellent track record in boosting usage and offering great staff development. “This new partnership will not only secure the future of our four leisure centres, it will also bring much needed investment in our facilities and secures concessions and services for vulnerable groups who already enjoy the facilities.” J A NUA RY 2019

Technology
We are at Your Service Christmas is over, and the New Year parties enjoyed and, perhaps, you have also been out to the New Year Sales... No doubt you have been using your laptop/ computer more than usual buying your bargains online so for this month’s article I’d like to explain why you should consider having it serviced – something the manufacturers tend not to tell you about. The reason for that is more laptops and computers fail due to overheating caused by dirt blocking the cooling parts, which results in more of them being sold as replacements for what were perfectly serviceable machines. To explain, inside every laptop and computer there is a processor attached to the motherboard. This runs extremely hot; if you were to touch it with your fingers it can actually burn you! If that cooling system fails, the heat very quickly builds up and usually results in the motherboard and processor ‘burning-out’ with the repair costs usually making it uneconomic to repair and better to buy a replacement laptop or computer tower. Recently, I have been seeing more than 20 laptops and computer towers a month which have failed for this reason, all of which could have been prevented. So, to cool the processor it will have attached to it a ‘heat sink’ usually made of copper (which is an excellent conductor of heat). Thermal paste is sandwiched between the processor and heat sink to conduct heat off the processor and a fan will be part of the mechanism to blow air either through the cooling fins in a computer tower or out the side of the laptop through the air holes. For gaming machines, which run even hotter, it is not unusual, for a water-cooling system to be fitted. The symptoms of this happening can include any of the following: hearing the fan running constantly at a high speed; the laptop/computer suddenly shutting down for no reason (it is attempting to prevent total failure); blue screening; very little, but very hot air, blowing out of the cooling holes in a
laptop; and the laptop/computer running much slower than usual (the processor is being slowed down in an attempt to reduce processor heat output). If your computer/laptop is more than two years old and never been serviced, it is time you consider having it done! What we do here at AA Whittlesey Computers, is dismantle the laptop/tower and clean all dirt from the cooling fins and fan. Then we use fresh 'Arctic Ice' thermal paste on the processor and, depending upon the condition we find inside your machine, we will recommend when this work should next be carried out. The cost? Usually £40 for computer towers and £60 for laptops – a low cost service that can extend the life of your machine considerably. Our January Sales In January, we will have i5 HP computer towers which are ‘free’. All you pay for is the full ‘out of the box software build’ for £150 and the cost of the new hard disk (which you choose yourself) either 1 Tb or 500 Gb hard disks or 120 Gb, 240 Gb, 500 Gb SSDs (solid state drives that run, minimum, 6x faster than normal hard drives). The range is from £60 to £180 and all come with a full one-year warranty. We have two gaming towers which have been retailing at £1500 and £800 respectively. These will be reduced to cost, i.e. £1100 and £550. We also have in stock two ‘all in one’ computers which will be reduced by £100. We will re-open after Christmas and the New Year on Thursday, January 3rd so first come, first served. For the next two months Oliver will be writing this feature on ‘The Future of Computing’. Happy Computing, Deborah, Len and Oliver

It helps them to progress their social skills, encourages independence and allows them the opportunities to form friendships and, most importantly, introduces structure and routine to help for primary school. At Alphabet, our aim is to provide your child with the highest standard of care and to support your child’s time with us to make it enjoyable whilst they learn throughout our teaching methods.
We have also created more space for our babies to move around in. This will help them develop their physical skills and give them opportunities to be more inquisitive. This change was commented on in our recent Ofsted inspection: “Children are confident and active learners. Babies have good opportunities to develop their physical skills. They have space to crawl, stand and walk.” We currently have a few spaces in our baby, toddler and pre-school room. If you would like more information about our nursery, please contact us on 01733 350781 or email us at info@alphabet-daynursery.co.uk
We are extremely proud to announce that we have had a fantastic Ofsted report due to our dedicated and wonderful staff. Over the past few months, we have worked hard to renovate the nursery with new flooring and new resources to create a modern and stimulating environment for our children.

Pets’ Corner
The Importance of Preventative Care by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre
We all want our pets to be healthy and happy and to enjoy a good quality of life. By having regular health check-ups, you will be doing everything you can to ensure this, even if you feel your pet is well, helping to reduce the chances of disease or illness. Sometimes something small may be picked up before it becomes a bigger problem making it easier to treat successfully. Most pets will have a yearly physical examination when they have their vaccinations, but we also recommend at least another check-up during the year. Examination of their eyes, ears, mouth, teeth, skin and coat etc. can tell us a lot about your pet’s health. Advice can also be given on how you can prevent future problems occurring, e.g. looking after their teeth, keeping them at a healthy bodyweight, providing them with the correct amount of exercise, treating them for parasites and keeping their claws in good health. Whittlesey Veterinary Centre now offers a Pet Health Plan, allowing you to provide your pet with the preventative care they require at a reduced cost, plus an added bonus of being able to spread the cost. By joining our new Pet Health Plan your pet will benefit from preventative treatments and services at discounted prices that are payable via a monthly direct debit, spreading the costs over the year for you. What treatments and services are included in the Pet Health Plan? Dogs and Cats:
• Bi-annual veterinary nurse health examination. • 10 percent off dentistry or neutering. • 5% off Vetsure Pet Insurance. Rabbits: • Annual vaccinations, including myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease. • Fly strike preventative product provided once annually. • Microchipping or £10 discount on any diet if already microchipped.
• Annual vaccinations, including kennel cough for dogs and feline leukaemia for cats.
• Claw clipping.
• Flea and worm treatments.
• 10% off dentistry or neutering.
• Microchipping or a £10 discount on any diet if already microchipped.

DEFIBRILLATORS FOR ALL: SAVING LIVES IN WHITTLESEY More than 106 local young people have been screened for undiagnosed heart conditions at the Whittlesey Masonic Centre, thanks to local charity Defibrillators For All who raised the money to allow this to take place with the help of local people. In the UK each week between 12 and 19 young people die from undiagnosed heart conditions. These are often what appears to be fit and healthy young people between the ages of 14 and 35. Simple tests such as an ECG and an Echo cardiogram can identify these conditions and refer patients to cardiologists for further treatment. At the previous screening a higher than average number of patients were referred to cardiologists, this resulted in the need for more screening days. The cost of hiring Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) to carry out the screenings is £5000 for a week day and increases to £8000 for a Saturday or Sunday. Defibrillators For All has already booked a date for 2019 and fundraising will start in early 2019. As usual, Whittlesey community spirit was at its best at the recent screening; cakes were baked, and tea and coffee provided for those waiting for their test.
The Masons kindly donated their premises to allow the event to take place. Dave Sowman, who is a Mason, along with his wife Jan provided refreshments and lunch for the team from Defibrillators For All and CRY Sir Harry Smith Community College ensured its eligible students were aware and were given time to attend the session. Defibrillators For All want to thank all those in Whittlesey who support the charity.

MEN UNITED IN SONG 2019: SUPPORTING PROSTATE CANCER UK New Year, new you? Looking for a fresh challenge, new skills and a great social scene to boot? Then look no further… Following its phenomenal success over the last few years, Men United in Song is back for 2019, once again raising money for Prostate Cancer UK. Launching in March, the project will sign up 40 local men with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert at the Cresset Theatre on Saturday 11th May. To date the project has engaged hundreds of local men, raising many thousands of pounds for the charity, as well as inspiring similar projects across the country – a fantastic result! John, from Moulton Chapel, says “I was looking for something new to do and Men United in Song seemed like a great way of meeting new people and supporting a good cause. I wasn’t sure what to expect and it was quite a steep learning curve! I didn’t realise before that not everyone in a choir sang all the same thing together, there are harmonies too, and when it all comes together it sounds absolutely amazing! The whole experience was fantastic and performing in the concert was the icing on the cake!”
William Prideaux, director of Men United in Song, says “Year on year, we see men of all ages from all walks of life get stuck into this project, producing fantastic results over a relatively short period of time both in terms of the progress they make and the sound they produce in the final concert and in terms of raising money for this very important charity. It’s always a pleasure and a privilege to work with them.” Absolutely no previous experience is required to join, just a willingness to get involved and give it your best shot! “We’re not looking for 100 percent in musicality, but 100 percent in enthusiasm,” says William. Introduction sessions will be at the John Mansfield Campus PE1 4HX on Wednesday, February 27th (7.30-9.30pm), Thursday, February 28th (7.309.30pm) and Saturday, March 2nd (2-4pm). Please call/email to register. Rehearsals will be on Wednesday evenings from 7.45pm-9.45pm at the John Mansfield Campus, Western Avenue, Peterborough PE1 4HX. The Men United In Song concert will be at Peterborough’s Cresset Theatre at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 11th 2019. Church Matters
WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH
The Big Benefits from a Simple ‘Thank You’ I always feel a sense of sadness when encountering those who take things for granted or take advantage of the generosity of others. They miss out on experiencing so many wonderful things. It’s little wonder that the Bible speaks so much about the need for us to always give thanks; in particular the psalms of David who suffered so many things, yet never lost sight of the importance of being thankful.
Time For New Beginnings January is here again, the start to the New Year. It is a time for new beginnings, often seen in our desire to make New Year’s resolutions. They are soon made, often with good intentions, but maybe not lasting all that long. We are not limited as to how many new beginnings we can have. We have just celebrated Christmas. In the birth of Jesus, God marks a new beginning with his people. He makes a promise that no matter how many times we fall short we can always start again whether we fail in our duties to the God who created us or in our relationships with each other. Forgiveness and a new start lie at the heart of the Christian message. It is the good news that Jesus brought in his birth, life, death and resurrection. We can share this message and live better lives with God and each other. As the New Year comes around do take the opportunity to look honestly at your life, see where you need to start again, face the challenge of a new beginning and ask God to be with you. This year may see the start of a new life with the birth of a child or a wedding marking a new relationship. The Church helps celebrate these events with baptism and marriage. Please feel free to discuss with me either one or both of these celebrations. There is no obligation and it may open up other new pathways. Thank you for all your support in 2018 and I look forward to being with you whatever 2019 brings. May God bless you all in this New Year. God bless you all from Revd Nigel

Researchers have, in recent years, discovered the positive effect it has in such areas as relationships. Those who say thank you or acknowledge the good in others tend to experience more meaningful relationships than those who criticise. It also affects our psychological health by reducing the stress level of such things as regret, envy, resentment, and frustration. It also substantially increases happiness and reduces depression. Grateful people are physically healthier, with fewer aches and pains. They are also more likely to take care of their health through exercise and regular medical check-ups. It enhances sleep and those who spent just 15 minutes jotting down or thinking about things to be thankful for before going to bed tended to sleep better. It also reduces aggression. Grateful people are less likely to retaliate or seek revenge against people who say hurtful and negative things, than those who are ungrateful. It improves self-esteem. Low self-esteem is increasing in our nation, leading to depression and in some cases, suicide. Athletes who were thankful over the success of others, rather than becoming resentful, were able to increase their own performance. A 2006 study also found that War veterans with higher levels of gratitude experienced lower rates of posttraumatic stress disorder. While a 2003 study showed it significantly increases our ability to become more resilient during pressured times. Let’s determine to make 2019 a year we look for things to be grateful for, rather than focusing on the negative.
