This month’s issue includes an article about the success of Whittlesey Table Tennis Club and the growing popularity of the sport in general which brought back memories of my youth when I used to play regularly. Like most people of my generation I started off by playing at the local youth club when my mates and I would try and smash each other to submission. However, after some time I discovered that subtlety invariably won the day and I improved. I wasn’t a bad player, if I do say so myself, and I started playing for local teams to a pretty decent standard. In those days matches were invariably played in draughty social clubs or church halls and you pitted your skills against all manner of opponents from the sublime to frankly the ridiculous. I could never work out how I used to play better against the more talented opponents than those with no discernible hand eye co-ordination. Perhaps that was just a metaphor for life. For when you need to be at your best, you invariably are…

Dealing with Anxiety “Probably the biggest insight is that happiness is not just a place, but also a process. Happiness is an ongoing process of fresh challenges and it takes the right attitudes and activities to believe and be happy” – ANON

Anxiety is something that everyone will experience at some time in their lives, particularly when faced with stressful events such as job interviews or public speaking. For some people dealing with anxiety is a constant battle, which at times can feel almost impossible to manage. People with anxiety disorders frequently have intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday situations. Often anxiety disorders involve uncontrollable episodes of sudden fear and intense terror which lead to a panic attack within minutes. It is not always easy to identify if a person is suffering from anxiety disorder. However, if any of the following symptoms are experienced on a regular basis, this may be an indication that anxiety disorder is present. Symptoms can vary but can often present with: • Dry mouth • Shortness of breath • Sleep issues • Palpitations • Extremes of sweaty or cold hands and feet • Feelings of panic and fear • Restlessness and uneasiness • Feelings of numbness

Anxiety disorder can lead to constant muscle tension, with continual clenching of fists or jaws. It may be an action that the sufferer is unaware of and will become used to the muscle tension. It is important that you consult your GP if these symptoms become an increasing issue. Research has shown that hypnotherapy can help relieve stress, fear and anxiety and can also help to relieve the symptoms of panic disorder. During our sessions of hypnotherapy, I hope to help my clients to relax and find ways to cope with these feelings by learning breathing exercises to use during an attack and help you feel calmer. I live and practise in the Whittlesey area and am able to help with stress, panic attacks, phobias, OCD as well as assisting work with self-motivation and personal development. I offer a confidential, peaceful and soothing environment.

So, Rebecca, how did you become a photographer?

“Since I was a young girl I have always enjoyed being creative, and photography was always a hobby. Every family occasion I had a camera in my hand. An opportunity came up for me to start my own photography business after the birth of my son, Lewis. When he was born we had just moved house, and before I knew it I was converting my dining space into a temporary studio! I have been building my business for the last five years.”

Have you stayed at that same address, then?

“Oh no! After a few years of buying more props and equipment, we soon realised we needed to move house again! We found a property that had space for a home studio and it has been an 18 month project. We moved into our new home last summer, and the studio was finished in November 2018. It has been a dream come true, finally

having a beautiful studio space to bring families for portraits.”

What types of photography service do you offer?

“I offer a wide range – family portraits; ‘bump shoots’; newborn; ‘cake smash sessions’ (a fun and messy way to celebrate your baby’s first birthday!); weddings; special events; commercial; and boudoir. I also work freelance, doing graduation photography and several charitable events each year, raising money for charities like ‘Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation’ and ‘Teenage Cancer Trust’.”

I What makes your job so special? “I love to capture people’s special memories. People come to me as clients and leave as friends. My latest project is boudoir photography which is very exciting and already very popular! I am a big softie when it comes to babies. I come from a large family, originally from Liverpool, and there was a new baby born each year in our family. Dealing With Fungal Nail Infection Fungal infections occur when microscopic fungi enter the nail usually due to trauma to the nail. Fungi that are already present in or on your body can also reproduce and spread through the nail, causing nail infections. The fungi thrive between the toes in the moist warm environment of socks and shoes.

Fungal nail infections can affect eight percent of the population at any one time. They can be unsightly, and people are often embarrassed by the way they look. It may affect part of the nail, the entire nail, or several nails. Common signs of a fungal nail infection include a distorted nail that may be discoloured; it may lift off from the nail bed and become brittle and thickened. Podiatrists have been researching new methods for treatment, and we are now delighted to offer ‘The Lacuna Method’. This involves drilling multiple holes across the fungal area. We then direct anti-fungal

spray into the holes and spray across the nail plate. The treatment involves this spray being re-applied at home every day and returning to us in six weeks for a review. This treatment has proved to give very effective results, it is relatively painless and no anaesthetic is required. We allow about an hour for the treatment. Our podiatrists can discuss with you multiple treatment options, including the Lacuna Method, and we can help you to have nicer nails in time for summer....

EASTER BISCUITS Banish Easter holiday boredom by getting the kids involved in some baking! These easy biscuits are fun to decorate and yummy to eat!

Method

• Place the butter in a large mixing bowl with the caster sugar. Use a wooden spoon to beat until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg until well mixed, then gradually add the flour. Use your hands to bring the mixture together to a stiff dough. Gather into a ball and chill for 30 minutes (the dough, not you!). • Heat the oven to gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C. Roll out the dough on a work surface lightly dusted with flour until it's the thickness of a £1 coin. With an oval cutter (or a cardboard egg-shaped template), cut out egg-shaped biscuits, using the rolled out trimmings to make more. Place on baking trays and bake in the oven for six to 10 minutes, depending on size, until golden brown.

Ingredients Makes approx. 18 biscuits 200g butter (room temperature) 200g caster sugar 1 egg 400g plain flour 250g royal icing sugar Assorted food colourings

• Allow the biscuits to cool for five minutes before removing from the baking tray to cool completely. • To decorate, make up the icing as directed on the packet. Divide between bowls adding a little food colouring to each bowl. Place the mixture into piping bags and get creative with your designs – the kids may like to use sweets or sprinkles too! These biscuits will keep for between one and two weeks when stored in a sealed cake tin.

Telephone Scams – potentially a lot more damaging and sophisticated than your average nuisance call about PPI, direct sales call or automated offer. Here is a guide to the types of scam calls, and some tell-tale signs which can help us hang up on the fraudsters. • Vishing - A telephone call is used in an attempt to steal personal information. • SMShing - An SMS text message is used in an attempt to steal personal information. • Investment or ‘Boiler Room’ Scam - A telephone call offers worthless, overpriced or non-existent shares. • Pension Scam - Designed to lure people to cash in their pension with promises of upfront cash, guaranteed returns and one-off deals. From January 2019, it has been illegal for genuine pension companies to cold-call. • Computer Scam - A scammer calls you and asks for you by name. They’ll say they are a computer-security expert from Microsoft, or another legitimate tech company. They’ll 09:28 say that your PC, laptop or tablet has been infected with malware (or a computer virus), and that they can help you solve the problem. The scammer will attempt to confuse you with jargon or ask you to open common Microsoft utilities and services that list what may appear to be problems with your computer. Stay safe: NEVER give out any bank / financial / personal information over the phone. A scammer will try and persuade you on the phone to hand over your bank card to a courier or taxi driver and they often say they’re from your bank or the police. They may ask you to give them your card and PIN, set up a ‘safe’ account, or buy expensive goods like watches or mobile devices and hand these over to them. ALWAYS be wary of any unsolicited phone calls, especially when they ask for your personal or financial details, hang up and report ANYTHING suspicious. Your bank or the police will NEVER: • Ask you to transfer money to a new account for fraud reasons, even if they say it is in your name. • Phone you to ask for your 4-digit card PIN or your online banking password, even by tapping them into the telephone keypad. • Ask you to withdraw money to hand over to them for safekeeping. • Send someone to your home to collect your cash, PIN, payment card or cheque book if you are a victim of fraud. • Ask you to purchase goods using your card and then hand them over for safe-keeping. If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it. What is The Virtue of Independent Advice? by Eamonn Dorling

There are fundamentally two types of financial advice, and the observations made here can be applied to other situations. One seeks advice when you do not have the relevant information, or it may take effort to obtain all the information on which to base an informed decision. If you are going to all that trouble – would it make sense to ensure no bias is being introduced? Independent advice simply means ‘That it is not given by someone trying to further his or her interests’ but sometimes the interests are a little more remote – it could be an organisation or company that benefits from the advice provided by their representative. An example: • When I first practised financial advice, I represented a company that created its own financial products, I could advise those customers but only on the products provided by my employer (most restricted). • When I worked for a bank, I could advise the bank’s customers, but solutions had to be from a ‘panel’ of approved solution providers. Possibly selected by the bank based on the level of commission those transactions would generate (very restricted). • Since becoming independent, my duty of care is focused totally on my client. The advice and solutions will be to the advantage of that person and their circumstances, solutions are selected from the entire market based on what is important in maximising benefit for my client (independent).

Some advisory services are owned by investment houses; in marketing terms this is called ‘vertical integration’. Vertical integration is when a company controls more than one stage of the supply chain. That's the process businesses use to turn raw material into a product and get it to the consumer. Being independent allows the adviser to consider everything and select the most appropriate, cost efficient and most efficient solutions. There are, unfortunately, many examples where customers are taken advantage of. PPI might be an example of this, but it is still going on with vast sums being invested in poorly performing and expensive investment funds, cash deposits and protection policies. If you need advice, make sure the adviser is not consciously or by default trying to further their own interests. Take advantage of a free initial meeting so you can measure the adviser against what is important to you.

AVERIL NAMED WHITTLESEY CITIZEN OF THE YEAR! Mrs Averil Cosstick is the winner of this year’s Whittlesey Citizen of the Year Award which was judged by three retiring councillors – Martin Curtis, Rita Jolley and Ralph Butcher – who deliberated over a considerable number of very worthy nominations from the public. She is involved in many organisations and groups in Whittlesey and her tireless hard work, dedication and commitment to all of the bodies was recognised as she collected the award at the recent Mayor’s Ball from Mayor Julie Windle (pictured right). Averil is president of the Nova Ladies Group which meets once a month and organises fund raising for many local good causes. She is also a member of the Whittlesey branch of the Royal British Legion and is always on parade and organising the refreshments on Remembrance Sunday. She is also a member of the Whittlesey Festival committee and organises all the adverts from sponsors in the festival handbook and the festival committee’s coffee morning as well as being an active member of the Queen Street surgery PPG.

To name but a few – selling Duck race tickets and assisting with the arrangements for the Mayor’s Ball, organising raffle prizes from local businesses for the Mayor’s charities and being a model at the recent Mayor of Whittlesey’s charity fashion show. Averil also finds time to be the primary carer for her husband Peter.

She has also been a great help and support to the Mayors of Whittlesey past and present over the last 10 years in many capacities behind the scenes.

In the words of one of her nominations for the award: “Whittlesey is very lucky to have such a wonderful, spirited lady doing her best for the town over many years.”

HEREWARD HARMONY TO STAGE CHARITY CONCERT

more than 30 years ago it meets on Thursday evenings from 7.30pm-10pm at Orton Wistow Community Centre in Peterborough.

Hereward Harmony is staging a charity ‘Sing for Spring’ concert in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society on May 11th.

Its main aim is to reach a good standard of singing, but with the emphasis definitely on enjoying the experience. It also performs in a variety of local venues and often raises funds for charity.

The event will be at held at The Fleet in Fletton, Peterborough, with doors and bar opening at 7pm. If you would like to come and see a selection of excellent performers, then ring Alan Lund on 07850 007057 to buy tickets at £10 for adults and £7.50 for under 16s.

Last year it ran a hugely successful ‘Learn to Sing’ six-week course. Some 25 people attended, out of whom 15 decided to join the band, swelling its membership to 35, and more have joined since.

Richard Exton was named Volunteer In The Community for his tireless efforts and outstanding commitment to Whittlesey. He has been involved in the organisation of Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival since its revival 40 years ago and has also been a mainstay of Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee for many years (now in the role of chairman), helping to ensure the town’s lights improve year on year. He is also an active member of Whittlesey in Bloom, assists at the Summer Festival in September and the Christmas Extravaganza, and is also the duck mascot at the Whittlesey Mayor’s Charity Duck Race, held annually on Easter Monday. Whittlesey Dance Club was named Group, Club or Organisation Benefiting the Community. Freya and Albert Pattemore, Linda Long, Roger Brown and Patricia Smith received the award for the weekly dance club they run at the town’s Manor Leisure Centre. Parents with Child Arrangements Orders stating that the children ‘live with’ them can take the children abroad for up to 28 days without permission, but parents that do not have the benefit of an order or the other’s agreement will be committing a criminal offence under the Child Abduction Act 1984.

With the dark winter months now behind us, many are likely to be planning for summer holidays with the children, but for separated parents, this can be more complicated than it might appear. If both Mum and Dad have ‘parental responsibility’ for the children, they have equal rights and responsibilities, and neither can dictate the arrangements for when the children are with the other parent. Subject to any court order to the contrary, either parent could take the children for a ‘staycation’ within England and Wales, without the other’s consent, though it is always best practice to discuss and agree this in advance, and to make sure contact times are ‘made up’ before or afterwards. Foreign holidays are slightly different however – and not just in terms of climate! The standard position is that parents need either permission from the other parent, or an order from the court allowing them to temporarily remove the children from the country.

To avoid holiday date clashes, and losing large holiday deposits, it is sensible to discuss this months in advance. As part of this, we always advise that travel, accommodation and contact details are shared. Hopefully the other parent will agree to the holiday, in which case it would be prudent to obtain their agreement in writing, so that you can bring it with you to the airport. If the other parent will not agree however, the only option is to make an application to the court for permission, by way of a Specific Issue Order. The outcome of court proceedings is never certain, but generally holidays are not a problem. Provided the location is not ‘high risk’, and there is no threat of the parent remaining there with the children and not returning, the court will often take the view that foreign holidays are in the best interests of children, to give them life experiences and broaden their horizons. Such applications can be costly and time-consuming however, and so cannot be made a few weeks before a holiday is due! As with all other decisions and arrangements made for the children, this matter requires clear communication between the parents, and a focus on what is best for the children. ROYAL BRITISH LEGION'S ANNUAL DANCE Whittlesey Royal British Legion has held its annual dinner dance at the Ivy Leaf Club in Whittlesey, attracting 125 revellers who were entertained by the music of the 59ers. Ken Mayor was the first recipient, receiving a surprise gift for his hard work after retiring from the role of chairman after eight years of dedicated service. Mick Cooke was awarded Member of the Year, the second time his name is now engraved on the shield, and Mrs Sue Piergianni was honoured for her hard work regarding Remembrance Sunday and the Poppy Appeal. DAUGHTER INSPIRES MARATHON CHALLENGE A father-of-two whose daughter survived a rare and aggressive childhood cancer is gearing up for the London Marathon to help others battling the disease. Trevor Darnes (55), a senior environmental health officer at Fenland District Council, is taking on the 26.2-mile challenge for the first time in April in aid of children’s cancer charity Neuroblastoma UK. Trevor’s daughter Ashleigh was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma in 1999 when she was two-years-old. She had a tumour which had wrapped itself around her left kidney and cancerous cells had spread throughout her spine, pelvis and upper legs. She endured months of high dose chemotherapy treatment and had surgery to remove the tumour and left kidney. This was followed by stem cell treatment and further chemotherapy to try and kill off the cancerous spread. Trevor said: “Against all the odds Ashleigh survived and is now a beautiful 21-year-old. Sadly, the prognosis for children with stage 4 Neuroblastoma is poor, with the five-year survival rate being around 40-50 percent.” Fellow sufferer Bradley Lowery’s fight against the disease was widely featured in the media. The Sunderland fan captured the hearts of many, including professional footballer Jermaine Defoe, but despite a long and brave battle against the cancer, he died in July 2017 at the age of six. Over 60s Still Going Strong! – by Chris Urlwin

t all began back in 1966 when two ladies, Mrs Harris and Mrs Kempston, set up the Whittelsey Disabled Club. They felt that there was a need for a club which offered social activities and outings for the disabled people of Whittlesey as at that time few organisations catered for the varied needs of the disabled.

It continued for many years providing a valuable service for disabled people, until about 18 months ago, it was felt that it needed more members to be financially viable, so changed its name to the Whittlesey Disabled and Over 60s Club to make it open to more people. Since then it has gone from strength to strength. It is a self-funding club which provides a wide range of activities for its members. Members meet fortnightly on a Monday afternoon at the St John's Hall, which of course is fully suitable for the disabled. There members enjoy games like dominoes and cards, while some prefer to have a chat. After tea, coffee and cakes etc., there is a game of bingo and a raffle. The Whittlesey Community Car Service is available for those who cannot get to the meetings under their own steam, which makes the club accessible for all. Once a month between March and Christmas there is a special event. This can be an entertainer 46

at the usual venue, a coach trip, or an activity at the Ivy Leaf Club. Already this year the club has enjoyed a successful St Patrick's Day afternoon tea with entertainment from a musical duo, and other activities are planned throughout the year. In April there will be a fish and chip lunch at the St John's Hall with a Country and Western singer, and a coach trip to the Burtey Fen Organ Collection at Pinchbeck including a lunch in May. A threehour cruise on the River Trent at Nottingham with lunch is planned for July, while the Rushden Lakes shopping centre at Northampton is the August treat. A Hallowe’en Party will take place at The Ivy Leaf at the end of October with a sausage and mash lunch and entertainment. A visit to London's Brick Lane Music Hall Christmas Show with tea is happening in November, and they return to the Ivy Leaf for their Christmas Party and carvery in December. Non-members are welcome at the events at The Ivy Leaf and on some coach trips – this will depend on how many members book of course, and the full price will need to be charged. There will be a stall at the Whittlesey Carnival in September with cakes for sale, a tombola and raffle, and in November the club hosts its Christmas Bazaar at the Ivy Leaf to which other organisations are invited to bring their wares for sale. Victorian Cookery

ne of the objects in the collection of Whittlesey Museum is a set of ‘Queen’ cookery books, published at the very end of the Victorian era in 1902. The different volumes cover soups, ices, pickles and preserves, entrees, meat and game, sweets, savouries, breakfast dishes, vegetables, cakes and biscuits as well as many additional household hints. The recipe books are interesting because they describe a diet at the same time very similar and quite different to what we eat today. They were aimed at reasonably well off, middle-class women who had the luxury of a choice of fresh seasonal foods and store cupboard ingredients, a far cry from the desperate food poverty and semi-starvation suffered by thousands of people – especially children – at the same time. The late Victorian diet described in the books was based around an evening meal with a main dish of plain meat, served with several types of boiled or fried vegetables as individual side dishes and some of a huge variety of flavoured sauces to make the simple food more interesting. Beef and mutton were the preferred meat as factory farming had not yet created the mass-production of chicken that we see today, but the Victorians ate a wider variety of birds and animals than we usually see in modern supermarkets; goose, pigeon, rabbit, hare, venison, eel, whelks etc, and also ate cuts of meat which are unfashionable today such as organ meat, heads and feet. The selection of vegetables was also slightly different to what we are used to. Traditional home-grown favourites such as potato, carrot, onion, peas and beans were very popular, but the Victorians also ate vegetables such as sea-kale, marrow, endives and artichokes on an equal basis. By contrast, there is almost no mention of common Mediterranean vegetables such as aubergine, courgette and peppers (although oranges and lemons were very popular), or South American sweetcorn or sweet potato. Pickles and chutneys, as well as home bottling, were used to preserve vegetables through the ‘Hungry Gap’ between the start of the year and the new harvest. Food was cooked in butter, with vegetable oil-producing ‘coleseed’ seen largely as animal feed. Soups and stews were widely used, as they could be usefully made from leftovers of meat and

vegetables – nearly all soups were started with a meat broth made from offcuts or bones of a previous main meal. Soups and broth were also considered an ideal ‘light meal’ for children or invalids. Sandwiches existed but cold leftovers or bread-and-dripping were a more usual lunch. For dessert, cakes or pastry with stewed fruit such as apple, pear, cherries, plums or peaches were the norm – the recipe books show an impressive number of different ways to present these ingredients as pies, crumbles, jellies, jam tarts, baked puddings and so on, even blending the fruit with crushed ice and/or cream in summer for homemade ‘ices’. Chocolate flavouring is hardly mentioned. Daily life at home and work was far more active (and colder) at the start of the 20th century than now and so the ‘everyday’ person needed to eat a lot more calories each day than a modern office worker commuting in a car, so rather stodgy desserts and cooked breakfasts with meat and porridge were normal if they could be afforded. Despite being exposed to a global empire, there is surprisingly little ‘foreign food’ in the Victorian diet – partly because transporting and importing overseas food ingredients would have been very difficult before container ships and refrigerated lorries. Although the recipes firmly embrace commercial curry paste and rice, pasta is only seen as macaroni or the exotic ‘sparghetti’ and there are no noodles, stir-frys, Mexican dishes or African foods mentioned at all. FOCUS ON ‘SPACE CHASE’, THE ARTS & BREXIT… – By Steve Barclay MP

n February I launched my fourth Read to Succeed campaign. This initiative aims to give every Year 4 pupil in our 34 primary schools a book of their own for them to keep and read over the summer holidays.

Since I launched this community-based project in North East Cambridgeshire it has enabled more than 5500 books to be donated to local children. This book counts as the pupil’s first book of the six to complete in the Reading Agency's Summer Reading Challenge. This year the theme chosen is ‘Space Chase’. I recently held my first arts round table meeting at March Town Hall where more than 20 stakeholders attended. This included the Arts Council, local arts organisations, the district council and professional artists, to discuss how we attract more arts funding to our area and how the arts better engage our local audience.

Ideas we are taking forward include creating a database so each artist submitting a funding bid does not have to duplicate the same evidence required by funding bodies when other artists have done this for their own bids. We agreed a series of other actions with a follow up meeting planned. Brexit While Brexit is never far from my thoughts as the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, I recognise that people locally and nationally have a wide range of views on this issue. It is important that we find a way to bring the country back together after what has been a difficult and divisive time. I am working closely with the Prime Minister to secure a deal, including meeting with leading European officials. Having a six-year-old and an eight-year-old at home waiting to play football and talk about dancing does keep these discussions in welcome context.

Heading to the Sun?

This month, Dave Bailey explores performing outdoors... The sun is up the sky is blue it must be time to play a tune, but it’s raining, raining as I start! As we head into the festival and garden party season it’s time to think about the ‘what ifs.’ Many a blue-sky morning can turn into a grey cloud downpour and if you have agreed to perform at an outdoor event the enjoyment can soon turn to despair when the weather turns nasty. Taking any booking for an outdoor event can materialise as a number of options and it is always important to check before agreeing to perform. The garden party – often a back-garden affair squeezed in between the rockery and the smoky barbecue with a flimsy parasol for shelter from the elements. To add to the excitement, on grass at the bottom of a sloping garden 50 metres from the nearest power point. The church fete – usually under a three-metre gazebo next to the bouncy castle air blower or steam organ/tractor, the local volunteer fire station engine or a water-based children’s game. The town’s festival – often positioned next to a children’s roundabout with a fire engine and several hand bells, or the diesel generator for the rides or burger bar, or the Punch and Judy man who has been allocated the same time slot. Summer music festival – sometimes in a local park or school grounds, on a borrowed muddy trailer

from the local farmer with a rickety set of steps to get up. A borrowed PA system that has two settings, distorted and feedback, whilst either facing the sun or prevailing wind (nice when it rains). OK, so I might be painting a grim picture, but all of the above have occurred and I have not included the sizzling four-way mains socket in two inches of water under a trailer at one event. So, the advice is, confirm the time, access and equipment provided and ask what you need to take (if you use printed music take a music stand and pegs or clips to stop the pages turning in the wind). If you are taking your own equipment, make sure you can get as close to the performance area to unload and carry. If it is a plug and play event check if you need to take your own back line amp and always take a spare microphone and cable. Ask how far away the nearest power point is from the stage. It is worth remembering that some town square power pods and portable event generators often have connections that are three-pin round caravan type sockets of the 16-amp type. An adapter from that to a 13-amp socket is a useful addition in your cables box. Whilst health and safety should be the organiser's responsibility, some venues should come with a DIY sticker. HELPS THE GREAT BRITISH SPRING CLEAN Members of Whittlesey Ladysmith W.I. have joined together in Whittlesey town centre to support the Great British Spring Clean by collecting bags of rubbish. The committee is currently working on plans for future events including a visit to Norfolk Lavender at Heacham in the summer.

COME ALONG TO FRIENDS OF ST MARY’S ARTS AND CRAFTS EXHIBITION The Whittlesey Friends of St Marys Church will be holding its annual arts & crafts exhibition in May. The event will be held from Friday, May 17th to Sunday, May 19th at the church and is open to anyone every day from 9am-5pm. Entry into the event will be £2 for adults, children free. There will be a number of creative displays on show throughout the church including paintings, needlework, pottery and much more. Whittlesey Table Tennis Club

able tennis has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity in recent years and nowhere is that more true than in Whittlesey where the sport is flourishing.

Whittlesey Table Tennis Cub was founded two years ago following an amalgamation of three well-established local clubs. It started with just 20 members, but now that figure has grown to 68 thanks to a national initiative to encourage more people to participate in the sport and also the hard work of the club’s members. Chairman Dr Peter Hau said the sport’s profile has risen since the 2012 London Olympics after which funds were made available nationally to promote the sport and the health benefits of participating. He said: “The sport has become more popular after lottery and grant money was made available to inspire the next generation of players.” Peter – who is a qualified coach – has been playing the sport since he was a young boy and has been one of the driving forces behind the success of Whittlesey Table Tennis Club. He said: “It’s really gaining momentum. There has been a big jump in membership over the past year thanks to the dedication of the committee and the various activities we have held. Table tennis appeals to people of all ages; we have members aged from 6 to 90. It can be played virtually anywhere and there are little start-up costs. It is enjoyable to play and helps people keep fit and active.” The club is based at Whittlesey Bowls Complex at 194-198 Station Road, Whittlesey which boasts 60

top-class facilities with ample parking. It currently has five teams participating in the Peterborough & District Table Tennis league and offers specialised high-quality coaching for members of all ages and abilities as well as a host of social events. As part of the national ‘Ping In The Community’ campaign, Peter has also organised free two-hour table tennis sessions at Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street on Mondays from 11am to 1pm. Peter added: “We have held sessions there for the past four weeks and they have been really well attended. AJS SCHOOL COUNCIL MONITOR LEARNING Alderman Jacobs School has a very active school council which carries out many important projects across the school. This year it has been asked to check whether children in the school are ready, respectful and safe in their learning. Careful planning and negotiation ensured that the council knew what they were looking for before they entered the classrooms. Council members reported: “We went into classes from Early Years to Year 6 and saw many fantastic lessons happening. In the lessons, we noticed that the children were ready for learning and showed excellent listening skills (to each other and the teacher). “Pupils were respectful all around our school, which made us feel proud of AJS. As well as this, children were safe in lessons, as they knew how to move around the classroom and handle equipment safely. Holy Week and Easter: Palm Sunday April 14th to Easter Sunday April 21st, 2019 Our pilgrimage through Lent reaches its highpoint with Holy Week and Easter. Recalling the events of Jesus’ last week, we are led into the glorious celebration of Easter Day – the Day of Resurrection – the day we declare ‘Jesus lives no more to die.’ Taking part in Holy Week and Easter makes demands on us both physically and spiritually but God’s gift to us is a renewed and deepened faith which will take us through another year. As we recall the activity of Jesus in his last week, we are recalling what God has done in our world. Palm Sunday: Gospel of Luke 19:28-40. Jesus enters into Jerusalem – palm crosses will be blessed in church and available to collect through the week or ask someone to collect one for you. Holy Thursday: Gospel of Matthew chapter 26: 1756. The Curse of Complacency Complacency affects every level of society, no one is exempt from its influence. We can’t buy our way out of it with money, education or intellect. It can only be stopped by a personal commitment to reject its ability to influence or control us. Having been involved with people from all walks of life and countries for 50 years, I’ve seen complacency ruin established businesses and those who are extremely wealthy through to deep poverty. It has even affected those whose talents appear to give them an edge on life and popularity. We may be born with different personalities and into varying family circumstances, but no one is born complacent. As we mature, and our interests in various aspects of life begin developing, it’s our reaction to what happens to us as we pursue these interests that can lead to complacency. My passion during senior school lay in such sports activity as the javelin, discus and swimming, particularly excelling, and winning most of the javelin events during inter schools’ sports day. Being born into the wrong social class meant developing my interest full time was not an option. I distinctly recall the battle with complacency which ensued. How thankful I was for parents who, despite extremely limited finances, guided and encouraged me not to become consumed by negativity and focus instead on things that, by imagination and determination, could happen. The tragedy of life is not found in failure but complacency. Not by trying too hard, but not trying hard enough. Not living above your abilities, but living below what you are capable of. The downward spiral begins when, in success we take things and others for granted, in failure we focus on what didn’t work instead of what could work. A successful inventor was asked ‘how many times have you failed?’ – his answer was ‘I’ve never failed, but I have found a thousand reasons why something didn’t work.’ Let’s help you succeed. SING FOR LIFE 2019: 40 WOMEN WANTED! PIG DYKE MOLLY DANCING HELPS MACMILLAN

Sing for Life will sign up 40 local women with a range of previous singing experience (including none) to rehearse over 10 weeks for a charity concert supporting Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice at the Cresset on Saturday, July 20th.

You will have seen Pig Dyke Molly dancing around the streets of Whittlesey but that's not all members get up to. Last December, they donned warm and festive clothing to spend the evening carol singing and collecting for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The project aims to make singing inclusive and accessible to all women regardless of age, social background or previous experience and over the years has introduced hundreds of local women to the joys of singing while raising many thousands of pounds for this much-loved local charity.

On New Year's Eve they danced and collected again for Macmillan, recently handing over a cheque for £1000 to a representative of the charity. This is the 20th year they have collected for Macmillan, raising around £18,000.

Nilesh Patel, community fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, said: “The support we receive from the Sing for Life project is invaluable and we’re really delighted that, once again, they have chosen to support us in this way.

Pig Dyke Molly would like to thank the people of Whittlesey and of Oakdale Avenue, Stanground who made them welcome and donated so generously to the good cause.

“It costs us £9000 a day to provide care to people in our local community. That’s not just the nursing, it’s things like lovingly prepared meals, specialist medical care, family support and round the clock opening hours so friends and family can be there whenever they need to be.”

CAMPAIGN SUCCESS FOR EACH East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has enjoyed another successful Bag It, Bring It, Boost It campaign, with the like-for-like number of bags dropped off at the charity’s shops up 15 percent compared to last year’s donation drive. In three weeks of action by EACH, there were a total of 21,674 bags filled with unwanted items and then given to one of the charity’s 35 shops across Cambridgeshire, North Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.

Sing for Life, which is sponsored by Hunt & Coombs Solicitors, launches with introduction sessions at the John Mansfield Campus on Thursday, May 9th (5.30pm-9.30pm) and Saturday, May 11th (2pm4pm). Is Your Pet Suffering From Arthritis? by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

Arthritis is a progressive disease which causes our pets pain, weakness and a reduced ability to do everyday things. About 80% of dogs and 90% of cats over the age of eight years will have arthritis in one or more of their joints. However, it is not a disease limited to the older pet and can be seen in younger animals too. It can be difficult to know if our pets are suffering from arthritis, especially in the early stages, as they will tend to get on with life and live through the pain. Being a progressive disease, it is better for our pets when we catch it early and help reduce the pain, plus make lifestyle changes for them. What signs may I see if my pet has arthritis? Changes in their posture/body: • Muscle loss • Weak hind limbs • Their tail is carried lower than normal • Their back is arched • Changes in how they stand, sit or lie down • Changes in how their fur usually lies. Changes in their behaviour: • Quiet, depressed and not themselves • Less enthusiastic about life or less playful • Sleeps more than usual or cats may stay inside more • Less sociable, may sit away from you or may get upset with other dogs and/or people • They may be clingier and feel the need to be close to you • They may guard areas of their body by moving away from you, snapping or biting when you move towards or touch an area of their body or they may start to enjoy a back rub • They may start licking, chewing or biting painful areas of their body, resulting in sore skin or hair loss • They may be less capable or reluctant to do things they would normally do e.g. cats may stop jumping up on surfaces or climbing trees • They may be fearful of knocking themselves or stumbling and keep themselves to themselves • They can start to suffer with anxiety issues • Find it difficult to go to the toilet or cats stop using their litter tray and/or covering it up 66

• Unable to groom themselves and you start to see matts or dandruff forming • Cats are not hunting as much or bringing you presents home. Changes in their mobility: • They may trot instead of run • Their movement is not as fluid as before or you may see stiffness in their movement • May be limping, may be worse as they get up, then less noticeable after moving around • They hesitate to go up steps/stairs, misjudge the steps, bunny hop up the stairs • Take their time to get in and out of their bed or settle down in their bed • They hesitate, misjudge or stop jumping up on the furniture or into the car • Find it difficult to get comfortable and may pace up and down in the evenings • Unwilling to walk or lagging behind on a walk, sniffing everything • Trips, stumbles or bunny hops when walking or running • Sits or lays down slower than normal or favours one side Most pets do not vocalise with pain, but this does not mean they are not in pain. An Expert View of Windows 10 Oliver has been looking at the recent improvements to Windows 10 and below are his comments: Although Microsoft has been getting a lot of negative press lately surrounding its flagship Operating System Windows 10 and the updates that have been associated with it, last October they rolled out a substantially improved product and for the last couple of months all the updates have been ‘feature rich’ such that we have been calling it the new Version 1901 and it shows the major changes that will occur when the new version is officially launched (V1903). To say this brings a lot of new features is an understatement. Currently we are seeing more than 11 features and tweaks that people have been pestering Microsoft for since Windows 10 first came out. Some of the improvements include being able to view photos from your phone in Windows, the ability to paste something you no longer have saved in your clipboard, ‘dark mode’ and so much more! All of the changes Microsoft has made means it’s never been easier to use your computer effectively, no matter if you have had your morning coffee or not. • Windows dark mode means you can be ‘productive’ through all hours of the day and night. This is because it will change the colour of the background from a bright white to a darker grey so it’s not as harsh on your eyes when changing apps. • The ‘your phone’ app allows you to see all of the photos and videos from your phone and it also allows you to send text messages from your computer to someone else’s phone too. • Game bar is a small app at the bottom of any game that allows you to quickly and easily change the volume, suppress Windows updates until you are out of the game, record or stream your game live and also works with dark mode! • You now have Windows security which includes superior virus and threat detection, a stunning new interface, Ransomware protection and

the ability to view every anti-virus you have on the system in one app – and all for free! • A new screen capture utility allows you to share what’s on your screen in crystal clear quality with the world in three simple clicks. • An improved Cortana search screen allowing you to see things like recent documents, apps, settings and photos easier than ever before. • Small changes to Edge (Microsoft's internet browser) that allows you to toggle AutoPlay on videos and Gifs (although I still prefer ‘Google Chrome’ for browsing). • If you have a touch screen PC, you will be happy to see the addition of SwiftKeys that allows you to swipe quickly across the letters you want and then it will include the word you were typing. • New Skype features allow you to set tasks and reminders right within Skype, saving you time right off the bat! • For users with a disability the new improvements to ease of access will come as a welcome touch, including things like the ‘make everything bigger’ button that changes everything to be easier to see. • And finally, the ability to paste things on a document or into a search bar on google that you haven’t got in your clipboard anymore. Don’t be frightened at trying some of these things out – just left click on the Windows Icon on the bottom left hand side of your screen and then click on the apps/features you fancy trying out. In conclusion the Windows 10 update increases everyone’s ability to use a computer effectively and efficiently.
