MAY 2019
Introduction
Welcome to Your May Issue.
What’s in a name? A while ago I was standing outside a local hostelry when a younger man asked me if my name was Stan? I said that I used to be called that when I was at school but how could he know as he was too young? He explained that his Dad – an old friend – was inside the pub and had seen me, hence the question. I seem to remember I picked up the moniker years ago because at school I was known as ‘Stan the Man’ but ugly rumours remain that it wasn’t that, it was ‘Stan, Stan the horsemeat man’ because my father was a butcher! Since then, I have been known as Andy or even ‘And’ to my mates, and a lot worse to others! However, there is one thing that hasn’t changed since I was a kid. If I’ve ever been suspected of doing something wrong, it’s always Andrew….

You know when you are moving relentlessly through the year when the Bank Holidays come upon us. We’ve just had Easter and the May Bank Holiday is on May 6th to be followed by the Spring Bank Holiday later in the month on the 27th before the long wait until August for the Summer Bank Holiday. These days off are always looked forward to with the prospect of enjoyable trips out either locally or afar for a well-earned change of scenery, despite the obligatory traffic problems, but they come at a price. Every time one is on the horizon, it means work has to be crammed in to fewer days before we can close the office door. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the extra time off without the panic of having to finish our work more quickly in the preceding days...!

Dealing with Past Experiences Can Help You Deal with the Issues of Today Throughout our lives from the day we are born we have influences and experiences that frame the person we eventually become. As we mature it is hoped that we are nurtured and guided into a rounded well-balanced adult, however there are times when troublesome underlying human behaviour, feelings, and emotions that might relate to early experience hinder our development and the way that we are able to lead our lives and interact with others.
It is important in all therapies that the client feels listened to and in control but in the circumstances of these conditions it is extremely important that they lead the direction and the treatment, after all no one knows you better then you know yourself.
I see my role, as a therapist, is to help you to reflect on your past experiences and make connections with the way that you view situations today. It is believed that our feelings, motives, and decisions are actually powerfully influenced by our past experiences and stored in the unconscious. Our personality is shaped and modified by different conflicts at different times in childhood. The impact on this is that we develop a number of traits later in life that can be detrimental to our mental wellbeing, in the form of social anxiety, lack of confidence, self-esteem and relationship issues. We are not born frightened of a spider, something, some learned behaviour or experience gives us that fear. To deal with the face value of that fear is only to mask its depth. It is like lancing a wart that will eventually regrow. It is my belief that in some conditions we need to tackle the root cause of the issue in order to be able to deal with the presenting problem. Psychoanalysis helps with this process
and I work with my clients to reflect on their past experiences and re-align their coping mechanisms to deal with their issues of today. Using psychodynamics, I hope to help you to make the connection between your beliefs and thought processes of today and that influenced from your past.
How may I help you?
At Free Your Mind you can expect to feel safe and comfortable in an environment that offers confidential and friendly surroundings. An environment that will give you the opportunity to explore the areas of your life that are causing obstacles in enabling you to move forward. We will work together to develop an insight into ways that you can decide the best way forward for you. As a psychotherapeutic counsellor I implement effective methods to instil self-awareness and understanding within my clients and encourage them to adopt new attitudes and feelings towards life situations. I live and practise in the Whittlesey area and at The Pulse Practice, West Street, Bourne. Helping people to improve their quality of life has always been a passion for me. It is my belief that each person is unique, and I tailor my therapy to meet the needs of the individual by considering their personal and unique abilities. I use all my skills and life experiences to assist my clients to review and access their personal qualities to help them achieve fullness and improve their quality of life.

Health
Do you Suffer from Painful Verrucae or Unsightly Fungal Nails? We can offer you specialist treatments with our Podiatrists at our March Clinic.
Verrucae are a skin infection caused by a virus that invades the skin and causes visible lesions to appear on the skin. They may appear as a plaque of hard skin, with an irregular border and can have black dots, (blood vessels), visible. They can be on the soles of the feet or on the toes. The virus is contagious and can grow to bigger lesions and spread on your feet, and to other people. Over a period of time, your immune system can fight the virus to get rid of the verruca, but this specialist treatment can help with the more stubborn verrucae. Podiatrists have been having a lot of success with a treatment technique called ‘needling’. This is proving to be a reliable treatment for the removal of warts, and is very practical for the busy person who cannot come in for regular sessions. Other treatments using acids and cryotherapy involve multiple appointments, which can add up to a lot
of time out of work and expense, and rely on the patient being fit and healthy. Needling involves usually only one treatment session and a follow-up, six weeks later. The treatment itself involves a local anaesthetic and then, once 'numb', puncturing of the wart with a needle with the aim of innoculating the virus into the host to produce an immune reaction. Whilst the injection is a little unpleasant, the needling is pain-free. The foot is a little sore for a few days, but no worse than most of the other verruca treatments available. The good news is that, if you have multiple warts, we don't have to needle all of them to get a good result. Recent studies have shown verruca dry needling has a success rate of approximately 70 percent. Read next month for details of the fungal nail treatment, or contact us for more information about both of these new specialist services.

Matters
We bring you items of interest for your home and community. If there is something you’d like us to cover or you have something to say please get in touch at:
Every year Whittlesey Festival organisers look back on the event with fond memories and are always amazed at the support of the local community and the thousands of visitors that make this an event to be proud of.
Four leisure centres in Fenland now have 95 brandnew Indoor Cycling Group® (ICG) IC6 bikes and associated session software.
WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL: DON’T MISS IT
Now in its 12th year, they are busy making plans for Sunday, September 8th, from 10am-4pm, which is the date that you need to have firmly booked in your calendars for this year’s festival. Stalls are already going fast so if you haven’t reserved yours yet please contact Fenland District Council by emailing marketsandevents@fenland. gov.uk or telephone 01354 654321 to secure your space and avoid disappointment. Month by month the organisers will be updating you on the acts who will be performing on the day and they have confirmed that spectators will once again be treated to the incredibly powerful sound of the Peterborough Highland Band combined with the Bedford Pipes and Drums Band. Local schools have already been contacted and the children and students are busy working on their art entries for the Schools Art Competition and Exhibition at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street.

BOOST FOR INDOOR CYCLING ACROSS FENLAND
Freedom Leisure, the not-for-profit leisure centre operator which operates four centres in Fenland on behalf of Fenland District Council, has invested more than £100,000 to relaunch the cycling studios at Manor Leisure Centre, Whittlesey, George Campbell Leisure Centre, March, Hudson Leisure Centre, Wisbech and Chatteris Leisure Centre. Centre manager Andy Cornwell said: “The primary aim for this investment is to build upon our already established indoor cycling programme because indoor cycling has always been really popular in Fenland. The new, state-of-the-art, enhanced and unique experience will hopefully support both existing participants while also working to appeal to new customers to join us.” For more information visit www.freedom-leisure. co.uk and check out the pages for any of the four centres in Fenland.
Here all the entries and other work will be showcased to the public on the day. Another popular feature is the Vintage Vehicle and Hot Rods display where there will be more than 100 cars and bikes lining Market Street and Broad Street for you to admire at your leisure. Again, if you are a proud owner and would like to bring your vehicle to the event you must book in advance to guarantee your place. It truly is a day out for all the family with something for everyone. There is still time to advertise in the festival programme – please contact Marija Lysak on 01733 752093 or email admin@whittlesey.cc if you would like more information. Sponsorship packages are also available. If you or your group would like to know how you can get involved please contact Brian Smithyman on 01733 752093 or email brians@whittlesey.cc or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005. 12

As part of the Macmillan Challenge, Girlguding Anglia will offer its members the opportunity to take part in up to six different badge challenges, focusing on taking action, raising awareness and raising funds. The Macmillan Challenges aim to build on one of the new Girlguiding programme themes; Take Action, by giving girls an opportunity to use their voice to help their community and the wider world. The six badges available for girls to collect include a badge for taking part in any kind of fundraising activity, a badge for hosting or supporting a coffee morning as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and one for raising awareness and organising care packages in the run up to Christmas. Collectively members of Girlguiding Anglia hope to raise enough funds to support 2500 Macmillan nursing hours (it costs £28 to fund a Macmillan nurse for one hour). As part of the Challenge, girls will help raise awareness of the key cancers that affect girls and women so that everyone in the Girlguiding Anglia region knows how to spot the signs and symptoms. Tracy Foster, Region Chief Commissioner for Girlguiding Anglia, said: “We are delighted to launch our partnership with this wonderful charity. Unfortunately, cancer affects so many of us, our families and friends and I’m pleased we can encourage our members to take action, raise awareness and hopefully raise some vital funds through our challenges and activities throughout the coming year.” For more information about The Macmillan Challenge, visit www.girlguiding-anglia.org.uk/the-macmillan-challenge
BOWSERS SUPPORTS READ TO SUCCEED CAMPAIGN Now in its fourth year, North East Cambridgeshire MP Steve Barclay’s Read to Succeed campaign has had its first donation of £250 from Bowsers Solicitors. Practice manager Chris Ringham (pictured) said: “We are pleased to continue our support to the Read to Succeed campaign. Improving the reading skills for Year 4 children throughout the local community will help to provide them with better opportunities later in life.”

Cybercrime – Don’t Fall Foul of the Online Fraudsters By Eileen Le Voi
For a free quote call Gary on:

Consumer Advice
Whittlesea Bourne
CYBERCRIME has reached epidemic levels in the UK – with police reporting that more than £190,000 a day is lost by victims. The hacking of social media and e-mail accounts is rife, and according to Action Fraud, (which is run by the City of London Police), £34.6million was reported to be stolen from victims between April and September 2018; an increase of 24% on the previous six months. Over 13,000 people in the UK reported cybercrimes over the six months, with more than 5,000 of those having had their social media or e-mail accounts hacked – costing victims £14.8 million. Closer to home, an initiative to crackdown on scammers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and aim to make the county scam-free, is gaining momentum. Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which is committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal to online fraud to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders. In the case of cybercrime, fraudsters trick internet and e-mail users into giving personal details, including financial information, in order to steal their money. Some kinds of online scams to be aware of: • Phishing: where you receive an e-mail that pretends to be from an authority (e.g., your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal information such as your address, telephone number, or other data. • Pharming: the fraudulent practice of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance of a real/ legitimate one. • Romance Scams: a confidence scam whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money. • Impersonation of UK officials: criminals impersonate a UK official to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment. • File Hijacking: where a hacker enters your computer and accesses your files, locking you out of them. The hacker then demands a ransom (usually money) before he will give you your files back. • Screenshot Managing: where hackers enter your computer and take screenshots of your display. This can help them get information about you, get passwords, or even blackmail you. • Keylogging: where hackers can record your keystrokes on your computer, thus gaining your passwords or other personal information. • Ad Clicking: where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by e-mail, or on a webpage) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal information. However, you can take steps to help protect yourself. • Ensure that your devices all have up-to-date anti-virus security. • Install a firewall and anti-spyware on your computer. • Ensure that you update your software (including Windows or iOS) when prompted to do so; postponing an update can leave you vulnerable. • Ensure that your devices are password-protected with a strong password - you can find the official governmental advice on creating passwords at www.cyberaware.gov.uk/passwords. If you think you or a loved one may have been the victim of a scam, report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk . To find out how you can sign up for the fight against fraud, and read some tips on spotting a scam, visit www.safelocaltrades.com/ consumers/advice/friends-against-scams.

Finance
What Are Life’s Expenses? by Eamonn Dorling
Up to leaving full-time education, many of us have few real financial worries, then it all changes… The desire (or otherwise) for fashion, transport and a lifestyle might require getting a job to provide some ‘disposable’ cash. Some of this might be required to pay for living at home or elsewhere – which becomes a non-negotiable expense. Having obtained a vehicle – the obligation to tax, insure, fuel and maintain the beast becomes another non-negotiable expense and before you know it there is little left over for socialising and having a good time... welcome to the adult world! A singleton becomes ‘an item’, the desire for more and better things, possibly a family, does not end the financial planning need. The saying: ‘Boys never grow up – their toys just get more expensive’ might apply in some cases. Celebrations of important events, lifetime experiences, helping family in their endeavours may be affordable from income – or maybe lump sums need to be built up within a time scale. Then just as you emerge from that phase – the prospect of retirement can be a threat or an opportunity depending on your circumstances, health and objectives. Everyone has unique circumstances, some have been ‘employed’ all their working life, some are self-employed, and some run limited companies where an efficient (and confidential) exit strategy is needed. If you make a mistake at this stage, it could be wrong for the rest of your life! A pension is a good example of an arrangement that can make accumulating
funds easier than doing all the work on your own. For example, an employer might contribute, the tax man almost certainly will, a well selected investment strategy can provide additional help and good management can help prevent a significant reduction in value prior to taking benefits. Some pension arrangements can provide more flexible benefits than used to be the case in years gone by. Some arrangements should not be interfered with or accessed before a set date – how would you know the difference? If you need advice, make sure the adviser is not consciously or by default trying to further their own interests. Take advantage of a free initial meeting so you can measure the adviser against what is important to you.

udding local boxers are honing their ring skills at Whittlesey Amateur Boxing Club.
The club – which was formed in 2010 – recently moved into new headquarters near Coates and attracts scores of enthusiasts of all ages. It holds seven boxing training sessions over three nights at the new venue, as well as attracting others for fitness training sessions. Head coach Gary Morris (36), who took over the role two years ago, said: “We have attracted a lot of members to the club over the past couple of years. We have around eight or nine who represent us and lots of others who turn up for our regular weekly sessions. “I’ve been a member of the club for the past seven years and took over as head coach after giving up boxing about three years ago. I really enjoy

coaching the members. It is good to see them enjoy the sport and have a smile on their face. “The club has never really had serious support from the local community and so in recent years we have tried to get more people involved in running the club and getting more sponsorship. We have seven coaches now, all volunteers, and we are all working hard to make sure the club is being run in a professional way.” As well as attracting boxing enthusiasts to its sessions, which are split into the age groups of 7-11, 11-14 and 14 and above, the club also attracts fitness fans to its popular circuit training sessions. Gary added: “We’re working to produce some great local boxing talent and welcome all ages and backgrounds to join us on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.” Further details of the club, which is a member of the Whittlesey Sports Association, can be found on its Facebook page or by contacting Gary on 07512 394975. The Last Thing A Biker Wants To Hear BY NEIL JOHN, PARTNER, CIVIL LITIGATION
“Sorry mate I didn’t see you” is unfortunately something that bikers hear all too often. Government statistics for 2017 show that while fatality figures for most road users are falling, motorcyclist deaths have increased by nine percent. The roads can be a dangerous place for those on two wheels. This won't come as a surprise to motorcyclists who are fully aware that many motorists don’t see them coming even when ‘looking’ in their direction. It has been shown that when a driver is looking out for a car, their brain is less likely to register a motorcycle. This is cold comfort, however, if you are injured or your bike has been damaged. Can you claim for lost earnings or damaged equipment as the result of a collision? If the driver didn’t look or didn’t see you, they could be guilty of driving without due care and attention, a criminal offence. A conviction here could be useful in proving a civil claim for damages. If you weren’t in view when the other motorist started their manoeuvre, they could avoid blame for the accident. Accidents can happen, and when no one is to blame, no one is liable for damages. Can you claim if your accident was caused by the road surface? The maintenance of a road will either be the responsibility of Highways England or the local county council. The Highways Act 1988 states that the authority has a duty to repair defects such as potholes within a reasonable time of their discovery. If the defect that caused your accident was unreported, you may not have grounds for a claim.
Road repairers have a duty not to leave materials on the road. If debris left on the road causes an accident, you could have grounds to make a claim. The same applies to mud on the road from farm vehicles or an oil or diesel spillage from a commercial vehicle although it can be difficult to prove who left the mud or contaminant on the road surface, limiting your opportunity to claim. What should I do if I am involved in an accident? For the best chance of a successful claim, you should gather as much evidence as you can at the scene, in particular: • The names and addresses of any witnesses. • Photos of damage to your bike and other vehicles involved. Include number plates and any points of collision. • Photos of the road surface or debris affecting it. • Photos of the road or junction where the accident occurred. Get pictures from various angles, identifying where the accident happened and the direction of each vehicle's travel. Litigation solicitor Neil John is a keen biker. He knows what it is like to be a vulnerable road user and can help you with your claim. Contact Neil today, what have you got to lose?

Stamford Shakespeare Company Throughout the summer, from June 11th to August 31st this year, the Stamford Shakespeare Company presents a season of plays at the stunning Rutland Open Air Theatre. Described by ‘The Sunday Times’ as “One of the finest things to do this summer”, and ‘The Stage’ as “One of England’s premier alfresco theatre venues”, it really is an experience not to be missed. This summer the Company are proud to present three fantastic plays: Set in Albania in the early 19th century, garnished with live music and glorious costumes, Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, “Twelfth Night”, containing some of his finest comic characters, is a merry tale of unrequited love, shipwrecked twins, cross dressing, mistaken identity and drunken revels. The hilarious antics of roguish Sir Toby Belch, foolish Sir Andrew Aguecheek, pert Maria and prim Malvolio will delight audiences, young and old. Shakespeare’s epic tragedy “Julius Caesar”, where political and military rivalries spiral out of control, is one of his most gripping plays and features some
of his greatest characters. In this powerful drama set in Ancient Rome, Brutus and Cassius, fearing the growing domination of Julius Caesar, plot his death. But when, on the Ides of March, the dictator is assassinated, Mark Antony unleashes the rage of the people against the conspirators. Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit”, a wonderful, supernatural comedy set in the late 1930s, portrays the trials and tribulations of novelist Charles Condomine, who foolishly holds a séance to research his latest book. When the eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, accidentally summons the spirit of his first wife, Elvira, his life descends into chaos. How will Charles cope, caught between two wives, one dead, the other very much alive? The theatre is situated in the grounds of historic Tolethorpe Hall, where last summer over 33,000 people experienced the magic of a visit to this unique venue. Enjoy a picnic in the glorious gardens, then take your seat, protected from summer showers, and see a stage like no other.

Words from Mayor James Palmer
Reading through the last edition of Discovering Whittlesea, I noticed the eyecatching adverts of local businesses. But I wonder how many of these businesses’ employees or customers have lost time and money stuck in traffic at the King’s Dyke Level Crossing on the A605? Constructing a new bridge over the railway line at King’s Dyke to reduce congestion is one of the Combined Authority’s key priorities for the year ahead. We have made a funding contribution of up to £16.4m available to see this project through. The overpass would not be happening without the Combined Authority’s intervention. It is set to open in early 2021. Many of the trains currently holding up the traffic at King’s Dyke level crossing do not even stop at Whittlesea station. That’s why I am working to help Greater Anglia implement its hourly service from Peterborough to Ipswich, which stops at Whittlesea. It is currently two-hourly. This initiative goes handin-hand with the Combined Authority’s investment in regenerating Whittlesea train station. In total, the CA has put £9m into Fenland railway station improvements. New lighting has already been installed at Whittlesea station with better car parking and platform extensions to come. By co-operating closely with Whittlesey Town Council on this, we can greatly enhance access to the wider economy.
to dual the road in one single scheme, as opposed to the usual, time consuming, bit-by-bit schemes we have seen over the years. This plan could accelerate delivery by as much as six years. I will be working closely with government to secure funding. Upgrading this vital road link will be essential for opening up growth in Whittlesey and across the whole of north East Anglia. I am sure that many readers have children or grandchildren who will consider going to university one day. From 2022, they will have the option to apply to a unique university which is right on their doorstep. The Combined Authority has invested £13.5m into the University of Peterborough project to date and I have set my vision for a technical university which equips students with the skills to secure the well-paid jobs that our local economy is creating, including in agri-tech and engineering. This is about creating a university that truly sets up young people for a prosperous future.
The dualling of the entirety of the A47 in Cambridgeshire is long overdue. The Combined Authority’s Board recently approved an approach 46

Whittlesey W.I. started its 100th year anniversary celebrations with a birthday party at Whittlesey Christian Church, Broad Street. Members past and present attended as well as more than 50 members from surrounding groups in the Isle of Ely W.I. Federation. The evening’s entertainment included the Isle of Ely W.I. Federation Choir and local magician and member of the Magic Circle Ricky Locke. There was also a special reading of the minutes of the first Whittlesey W.I. meeting in 1919, a birthday buffet supper and the cutting of a 100th birthday cake. Julie Windle said she was extremely proud to be Whittlesey W.I. President in this special centenary year and paid tribute to 92-year-old Ruby Hurst, who has been a member for 78 years.

The Local Music Scene
Got the Picture? by Dave Bailey
This Month: Captured The Moment? Attending a gig or festival? The temptation to take pictures and videos has become almost second nature for many of those attending, but does it capture the essence of the event or detract from the enjoyment? Many professional performers whether they be rock gods, supporting acts, actors or stage crew make a living out of performing and often the return after the outlay for transport, hotels, venue hire, stage crew wages, replacement equipment and insurance/public liability means they just about break even. The average theatre tour can often lose money and result in the performers relying on merchandise to supplement their income. Surprisingly even on the best equipment/mobile phone/tablet, photos taken in a theatre or hall can be grainy, blurred or contain a sea of tiny glowing phone screens. But, is it really capturing an accurate memory? The average musician whether at an open mic or performing on stage lives the music in the same way that an actor in a Broadway or West End show relates to the character’s persona. Reliving the moment after the event may not match the expectation as the party of revellers in the row behind singing along may not have the same musical talent as the act on stage and from row kk in the upper tier the record may just be a sea of white and a tiny spec on stage. It has been known for some actors in London to stop their performance and have the spotlight turned on to a person having a phone conversation or recording part of a show. Some performances are covered by strict copyright laws which forbid the use of any device that can film, or record sound/pictures and the theatre can demand that they are deleted. It is also worth noting that many social media platforms are 58
D I S C O V E R I N G
Whittlesea
being scanned for this type of media and posts to YouTube have been removed and or claimed through the copyright infringement regulations. The introduction of merchandise and/or premium ticket sales (meet and greet) packages for events used to be a prime revenue generator which, produced by the tour manager/publicist in conjunction with the local theatre, often contains sponsored adverts relevant to the area. With the availability of quality optics, the difficulties in policing unauthorised recordings and the ability to rip and download music/video source material, it is no wonder that the number of touring bands has fallen, and that merchandise is becoming less available at events. The venues are concentrating on the up-andcoming performers to supplement their annual programmes. Lower performance fees, with bands paying their own transport costs, a new wave of enthusiastic artists selling their CDs for a fiver and happy to mingle with the audience after the performance are emerging. The standard is in most cases still high as many of the artists have crafted and honed their talents to produce a classy professional show. The majority of acts have spent night after night on the local pub open mic and music scene often playing for (as some landlords describe it) exposure. In fairness whatever an act charges to perform in a venue that has no door charge, the landlord has to take at least three times the amount minimum through the till on sales to cover the outlay. With many music pubs closing their doors it is now more than ever time to support the live music scene. The regular open mic and acoustic sessions can be found at: www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm MAY 2019

Friends of The Cemetery
S
hould you be a regular visitor to Whittlesey Cemetery, you may have noticed the improvements that have been made over recent years. Paths have been kept clear of weeds, the Old Mortuary has been refurbished, the toilet block has been made presentable, overgrown trees and shrubs have been removed, seats have been painted, and even graves repaired.
You may have thought that this was the work of the local council, or even an army of volunteers, and there are notices at the entrance about the Friends of the Cemetery, but no, it has been done largely by just two people - friends indeed! As members of the Whittlesey in Bloom group, Pauline Edge and David Scott offered to take on the cemetery as their main project five years ago. Ever since, often working 15 hours a week or more, and with some occasional help, they have been making a big difference. At present they are joined most Mondays by Jo O'Donnell, and until two years ago the 'Community Payback' team, (the minor offenders’ rehabilitation scheme), helped by cutting down big trees and shrubs, leaving those that remained a manageable size. Ian Latter, of H.E. Bull Funeral Directors, with members of his team, joined them a number of times last summer, helping with weeding and

raking the gravel paths, but more help would be appreciated so that they could also take on the newer part of the cemetery. At the beginning they started at the main gate, and gradually worked their way up the main path, tidying, weeding, and repairing graves as they went. Then of course there was the maintenance and repainting, installation and planting of planters, placing of seating, as well as keeping on top of the weeds and leaves that always appear. Recently they have cleared all the old vegetation and rubbish from below the trees at the front, hoping that the much tidier appearance will deter people from throwing their empty cans and bottles, (and other stuff), over the railings. At the time of writing they are awaiting the arrival from Fenland District Council of a planter to be placed near the main gate. This will be maintained by the Friends. As part of Whittlesey in Bloom, The Friends of the Cemetery receive support from Whittlesey Town Council and Whittlesey Charities, and occasional private donations, new lavender plants for instance. It is generally understood that a little gentle exercise in the open air is good for the mind, body and soul, and what could be more worthwhile than spending a few hours each week helping to keep the cemetery neat and tidy? Anyone who would like to become one of the Friends of the Cemetery should get in touch with Pauline Edge on 01733 208414.

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH
St Andrew’s Church, Church Street, Whittlesey PE7 1DD Holy Trinity Church, North Green, Coates PE7 2BQ St Mary’s Church, Station Road, Whittlesey PE7 1AB St Thomas’ Church, Oil Mills Road, Pondersbridge PE26 2TR
Make Yourself at Home in God's House “Welcome to your Parish Church. May you be at home here. For this is the place where the love of God is made known. Bring him your needs. Know His forgiveness and His power And pray for the needs of the world.” Our churches are open daily for personal prayer and visits. This expresses our desire to be inviting, welcoming and hospitable. Our buildings are places of prayer and for prayer. Please always consider yourself not only as a visitor but as an honoured guest. Make yourself at home in God’s house. God knows your joy; he knows your sorrows. Be glad or be sad. Stand and stare, sit and be silent, kneel and know that you are welcome. Offer yourself, just as you are, to God who loves you. I would like to remind you about our churchyards. Each of our churches is surrounded by a churchyard. St Andrew’s and St Mary’s churchyards are closed and not available for burials. St Andrew’s, however, does have the provision for interment of cremated remains at the discretion of the vicar and PCC. St Thomas’ and Holy Trinity’s churchyards are open and available for burials and interments. Permission for use is given according to the rules of the church and governed by where you live – please discuss this with me if you have any concerns. I would also like to take this opportunity to advise you about the extent of the churchyard at St Mary’s. It consists of all the land within the walls of the churchyard (not just within the metal railings) and the detached churchyard across Station Road (i.e. the Straw Bear garden). Finally, please respect the way you use our churchyards. May I gently remind you that even in closed churchyards the remains of people buried there still exist even though the headstones have been moved. Many thanks. Revd Nigel (Tel: 01733 203676) 62

Giving Honour Where it's Due The relevance of the Bible to a modern society constantly amazes me. Putting its advice into practice could revolutionise lives. Let me share just one piece of advice it gives: “Acknowledge with honour those who truly deserve to be honoured.” When was the last time we honoured someone who has said or done something which we found particularly helpful? Then compare that to the times we have voiced our opinions regarding something we haven’t liked, or perceived mistakes they have made. Several years ago, I taught a particularly challenging series in a very wealthy Canadian church where the car park was full of huge cars. Each evening a poorly dressed woman would sit alone on the front row and smile. What an inspiration she was. At the end of the final meeting I thanked her for smiling and discovered the heartbreaking story of her situation. In reality this lady had very little to smile about, yet she had faithfully thought of others before herself. It was only right that this should be honoured. She then shared how discouraged she had become and was thinking of giving up making the effort to genuinely keep smiling through it all. What a sad loss that would have been. After speaking with the pastor about my experience with this lady I discovered something which concerned me. It turned out that many in the congregation had shared with him how encouraged they had been by her smile. Sadly no one had taken the initiative to share that with her. When did we last see something positive about a person’s life, then made the effort to honour them, at the very least with encouragement? If you’re facing every new day feeling your life has no value, come along any Sunday at 10.45am you’ll find a warm welcome and encouragement. SIGN UP FOR CHARITY SKYDIVE Thirty thrill seekers are jumping from a plane to celebrate the 30th anniversary of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) in Milton.
DANCING FOR RED NOSE DAY John Sharman Line Dancing has held a fund-raiser for Red Nose Day… its first-ever charity event. A Linedance workshop and Linedance disco was held at The Fleet in Fletton with three instructors taking teaching slots in between social dancing. John Sharman said: “We hoped for 40-50 dancers and to raise £500. By the 7.30pm start time we had nearly 70 in the hall and by eight o’clock over 80! Raffle tickets and Irish bingo tickets went like hot cakes. Some of the dancers did some fine baking so we were able to sell those cakes as well. “Karen Holtom, one of the teachers, had been fundraising prior to the event in her classes and brought £691 to the fund smashing the original target out of sight. The hall was awash with red noses, red wigs, red jeans, red shirts and skirts plus many Comic Relief T-shirts. “Lots of cheers ended the evening when we announced total monies raised were £1810! Will we do it again? Absolutely.”
D-DAY COMMEMORATION Thursday, June 6th this year will be the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Whittlesey branch of the Royal British Legion will be commemorating the event with a short service at the town’s memorial at 11am. Everyone is welcome to attend and remember all those involved in this historic event.
Molly Wesley from Cambridgeshire will be following in the footsteps of her dad, who has also done a skydive, as she jumps from around 13,000ft at Peterborough’s Sibson Airfield on Saturday, August 3rd. She will fall at some 120mph, descending to 5000ft in just 40 seconds, before her parachute opens and allows her to enjoy breathtaking views of the area. Molly, a health care assistant at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Huntingdon, whose sister, Jade (22), is also doing a skydive, said: “I’m taking part in the skydive as I’ve a massive place in my heart for charities and would like to help this amazing organisation that helps children and their families. “I’ve taken part in a Macmillan coffee morning before, when I was at college, but this is the first time I’m raising money by myself. “I’m very happy to be supporting EACH as, with my job, I also care for end of life patients and it’s a huge privilege to be caring for people in their last few days. I hope to one day work in a hospice, too.” EACH still has some of its 30 skydiving places to fill. Those who sign up will receive a fundraising pack plus tips and advice from the charity’s fundraisers. Those wanting to get involved will have to put down a £50 deposit. A further payment of £165 will be required on the day. This can be made by the individual themselves or taken out of sponsorship money. In the latter case, EACH suggests people raise a minimum £350. For more information about and to sign up to the skydive, go to www.each.org.uk/30skydive
Ray Thrower and Judy Darby are retiring from the position of Poppy Appeal organisers for the Whittlesey district on July 1st this year and sadly no-one has yet come forward to take on this role so it could be that there will be no poppies on sale in Whittlesey this year for the Remembrance period. Should anyone be interested in this charitable position please contact Tony Twigger, county fundraiser, on 07768 307398 or email ttwigger@ britishlegion.org.uk who is responsible for all poppy appeal matters in Cambridgeshire. 64

Tips For Having A Healthy, Happy Rabbit by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre
A healthy rabbit is alert and lively. It’s advisable to check them over at least once a day, but preferably twice. Check for any changes in appearance or behaviour. Some signs of poor health are scaly patches inside the ears, a discharge from their eyes or nose, and any swellings or diarrhoea. Dental problems are common in rabbits, their back and front teeth must be checked regularly, especially if you see they are losing weight. All rabbits should be up-to-date for their vaccinations against the potentially fatal diseases, myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD). Daily grooming is essential for those with long coats, as their fur can become matted quickly and those with shorter coats should be groomed once a week. Grooming also helps to build a good bond with your rabbit. Daily physical and mental exercise where they can exhibit their natural behaviour is very important for their well-being. They need to be able to hop around, stretch and have an area of privacy to sleep, e.g. safe tubes or a cardboard box tunnel for them to run through or hide in. You can provide safe things to chew e.g. apple wood or willow or vegetables hung up for them to exercise their teeth on. Safety is paramount with house rabbits, e.g. cables should be out of their reach or have a protective covering and house plants are out of reach as some can be poisonous. They require a good-sized home that is home that is ‘predator-proof’, in a shaded area away from direct sunlight, strong winds and rain, with either a large run attached, or a fenced area surrounding it to allow the rabbits to exercise. The best type of bedding is clean, bagged straw and should be checked every day and removed if soiled, especially during hot weather, as flies can quickly lay their eggs on soiled bedding and then maggots can burrow into their fur and body. This condition is known as fly strike and can be potentially fatal. It is very important to make sure their bottoms are kept clean with no faeces stuck to them, especially in the warmer weather to help prevent fly strike.

Hay or grass should be the basis of your rabbit’s diet, with a few fresh vegetables (dandelion leaves, carrots, spinach, broccoli, celery, apples, watercress), washed thoroughly. Cereal-based diets for rabbits (the muesli-type) are high in sugar and low in minerals, and therefore should be avoided. There are complete foods available, but hay should still make up to three-quarters of their diet. Never give them grass cuttings as this will cause serious health problems. You can buy grass, dried especially for them. Their water should be changed daily and always available to them. If you are using a water bottle, check it is working properly each day. To help your rabbit feel more comfortable about being picked up, practise handling them from an early age. The safest way to pick them up, is to slide one hand underneath their body to in-between their front legs, place your other arm around their hindquarters for support and hold them close against your body. Never pick them up by their ears or scruff of their neck and always place them down gently with their hind legs first, onto a non-slip surface. During May we are offering free health checks for your rabbit, plus a discount on vaccinations and neutering. Contact the surgery for more information.

Technology
So, You Want To Try Gaming? Firstly, the cheapest and most cost-effective entry into the gaming arena is to buy either an Xbox or a PlayStation. Simply, for cost/playability they really are good value for money. Next entry level is to buy/build your own gaming tower. An entry level machine will allow you to play games such as Minecraft, CS-GO, Unturned and similar ‘entry level’ games at medium to high settings and playable FPS (how many pictures the graphics card can display per second). We have such a machine for sale for £550, completely new. Then, a machine such as this can be upgraded with an NVIDIA GTX 1060, AMD RX 460 GPU (graphical processing unit – the graphics ‘brains’ of the tower). Following such an upgrade the tower would then be able to play games such as PUB-G, Call of Duty, Far Cry 4, e.g. mid-range games at medium to high settings at playable FPS. The next thing real gamers want is a top specification gaming tower. At this point the sky is the limit in terms of what you can spend on the processor, GPU, and motherboard. An example of a higher specification gaming tower we have in the shop has an FX 8 core processor, 16Gb RAM and 16Gb VRAM (Virtual RAM), 240 Gb SSD (solid state drive, for the operating system), 1Tb HDD (hard disk for games and gaming data), 850 watt power supply and a water cooled system (both for XTreme cooling and silent running), all attached to a top of the range motherboard. Now this set-up would allow you to play Fortnite, Call of Duty, Crisis, and Battlefield, e.g. all ‘top-end’ games, without lag or delay at high to ultra-settings and a very high FPS. But, let’s say, you have your ‘ordinary’ laptop at home and want to play Grand Theft Auto V/Red Dead Redemption 2 – that’s impossible you may think; however, there are ways and means... and we will continue with this next month.
To finish this month’s article, a word of warning. Should your laptop/tower start ‘blue-screening’/ shutting down for no apparent reason/fan never seems to stop running/or just feels very hot to the touch then you may have a blocked heatsink. This happens to all computers at some point in their life and can mean your machine digs an early grave. These problems also affect PS4s and Xboxes, not just computers. If suffering from these symptoms, please take your laptop/tower to a computer repair shop for a ‘clean and paste’ where the internals are cleaned of dirt/dust and fresh thermal paste is used on the Processor to reduce heat output. It is not unusual to find blockages such as the one pictured above, inside laptops. Happy computing, Deborah, Len and Oliver

Introducing the New Volkswagen T-Cross Welcome to the family: The T-Cross is the latest practical, cool and versatile addition to Volkswagen’s fast-growing SUV range. Even more suitable for the city than the T-Roc, and more compact than the Tiguan – but just as sophisticated as both including numerous assist systems which had previously been reserved for higher vehicle categories. As versatile and practical as its larger siblings and combined with an attractive design, the new T-Cross is a flexible model with numerous customisation options and maximum recognition value – a typical Volkswagen. Numerous standard assist systems elevate this compact SUV from the competition. Always a standard feature are the Front Assist area monitoring system with Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Braking System; the lane keeping system Lane Assist; Hill Start Assist; as well as Blind Spot Monitor lane change assist, with integrated Rear Traffic Alert. Optionally available are also the Driver Alert System, Adaptive Cruise Control and Park Assist. The newest Volkswagen SUV has also been innovatively digitalised: as a result, wireless charging
makes sure your smartphone battery is always sufficiently charged, encouraging you to play your favourite songs directly from your smartphone or via streaming services. The optional “Beats” sound system including features, such as a 300 W 8-channel amplifier, and separate subwoofer in the luggage compartment will impress music lovers. The Keyless Access locking and starting system is optionally available, as is the digital cockpit featuring 8-inch infotainment touchscreen and the most recent generation of the “Active Info Display”. Available in a choice of two petrol, turbocharged engines with displacement of 1.0 litres, which comply with the latest Euro 6d-TEMP emission standard. The entry-level petrol engine with 95 PS is combined with a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 115 PS variant is equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, or with the highly efficient seven-speed DSG. Compact, but far from small: be it more legroom for passengers or more space in the luggage compartment – any plan can be easily realised, thanks to the rear seat bench that can be moved by fourteen centimetres. Interior background lighting and premium upholstered seats maximise the style in the space. The carefully balanced combination of casual style, refined practicality and extreme cost-effectiveness is aimed at a young and young-and-heart public who are keen to express their positive attitude to life in a self-confident and distinctive way. However, they clearly also like to keep a watchful eye on costs and maximise benefits associated with their chosen ride. Available in a choice of four models from £16,995, test drive now at Robinsons Volkswagen in Peterborough.

TREAT YOURSELF TO A NEW KITCHEN OR BEDROOM! These customers did and just look at what they had to say...
“Buying my new Symphony kitchen from Kellyvision was a good experience – I enjoyed it! Even when I changed my mind several times it was not too much trouble. The experience was not stressful at all and it was great from start to finish.” Miss F, Whittlesey
“Just a note to thank you for our beautiful new kitchen. It is everything you said it would be and more! We have been so impressed with your service and also of Anthony and his team; he is truly something else! Everything was left so tidy each day during installation and nothing was too much trouble. I still find myself standing in the kitchen and just looking at it... crazy, but it is so, so gorgeous. I would have no hesitation in recommending you to anyone that wants to listen.” Mrs P, Coates
“Thank you to everyone involved in the design and installation of our kitchen. Thank you Lee for your patience during the many redesigns, overseeing and co-ordinating the whole thing. We have and will recommend you to everyone!” Mr & Mrs D, Thorney
