JULY 2019
Introduction
Welcome to Your July Issue. I’m writing this column on the eve of a road trip ‘up North’ to see my son who is temporarily residing there. My wife, daughter and I will be setting off for the Lake District where he is working this summer before heading back to London which is now his home. It is only a relatively short trip, both in distance and in time, but has once again posed some tricky questions. Do we take the family dog? – obviously yes! Which vehicle do we take – the big slow sensible one or the smaller, fast one? Which route do we take? And crucially what clothes to pack? The vehicle choice should probably be the sensible one. The route – the quickest possible, and my experience of the Lake District is to take clothes for every eventuality; it could be blazing hot but is more likely to be cold and wet! Decisions, decisions…

A warm welcome to our July issue in what is turning into a rather warm summer for us here in the east of the country – although rather damp at times too! In 1935, George Gershwin penned the immortal line: “Summertime and the livin’ is easy”, and I’d like to think that, every year, we go some way to making your summer a little easier with our extensive range of interesting features, advice and a comprehensive schedule of what’s happening in our area in the weeks to come. This month there’s certainly a summer feel to what we’ve got in store for you – you can find out about Halloumi burgers on the barbecue, and we’ve even got advice on avoiding ‘post-holiday burglary blues’! Enjoy the read and enjoy the summer break and, for some of us, those exam results coming our way very soon!

Congratulations!
The Father’s Day competition in last month’s Discovering Whittlesey proved very popular, with Matthew Nichols being the lucky winner of the prize, generously donated by Coles Barbers, of Whittlesey. The prize was given to his dad, Mark Nichols. The competition asked which of the England sporting captains, Harry Kane, Owen Farrell and Joe Root, is the odd-one-out and why. The answer is Harry Kane, because he has two daughters, whilst Owen Farrell and Joe Root each have one son.

OOBAC: Who’s That?
– by Chris Urlwin
nless you are an allotment holder or a user of the recycling depot in New Road, you may be unaware that we have our very own family-friendly, everybody welcome, archery club in Whittlesey.
The Old Oundle Bowmen Archery Club (OOBAC) has been running in the area (never Oundle) since 1999, when John Rowland wanted to set up a friendly archery club that was accessible to all. Originally, it operated from a field near Pondersbridge, moving to its present site in 2014. The 11-acre field, originally the location of McCain's Sports and Social club, is leased to the bowmen by the local company that supports many local activities. Currently the club has more than 60 members with ages ranging from nine years to 80+. New members are encouraged by monthly free taster sessions, where qualified and DBS checked coaches will introduce you to the basics and safe handling of the equipment. This is followed by a beginners’ course before new members can be allowed to shoot on their own. Disabled archers can also be accommodated. The club is affiliated to Archery GB, which stipulates strict safety procedures and regulations regarding conduct, target positioning, safety areas, and very much more. The club has a large stock of bows in various sizes and arrows, which members can use, although usually, with more experience they will want to buy their own equipment that can be tailored to their requirements. There are four different bow types that can be used, as well as crossbows. Like martial arts, many different levels can be achieved from novice to grand master bowman, based on the level of competence at various distances. Although the club runs regular tournaments where archers from other clubs take part, the emphasis is on enjoyment and fun, like its birthday bash on July 14th. OOBAC organises many themed events through the year, previous ones being Christmas in July, Super Heroes, and Medieval, where members

dress up accordingly – imagine firing a bow in full armour! Archers can use the site 24/7, and events like their Hallowe’en shoot, take place after dark. There is something very satisfying and primal seeing your arrow quivering in the bullseye, even though the 122cm target is only 10 metres away. It links us to our hunter gatherer predecessors, and, if your name is Bowman, Archer or Fletcher, it's in your DNA. Whilst some members aspire to achieving the prestigious bowman or higher standards, the emphasis is definitely on enjoyment, and there is no doubt that they achieve that. More information can be found on www.oobac.co.uk, or email oobacarchery@gmail.com The real meaning of OOBAC? Ask one of the members...

Graham Heathcote has been running The Shed Shop for almost 32 years. After training as a carpenter, he always had the desire to be his own boss and have his own business, so when in 1987 the opportunity came to run and then buy The Shed Shop, he jumped at it. He said: “Whittlesey seemed perfect as it’s a great location, close to Peterborough with easy access to the whole of the Fens. I’ve never looked back and now over 30 years later I am still pleased I chose Whittlesey as I have fantastic customers that regularly recommend me and have been a big part of the reason my business has grown.”

Graham says that more and more people are now looking to utilise what space they have and The Shed Shop can create a bespoke design to meet any requirement, including providing wider doors/ doorways for wheelchair or mobility scooters. He says wooden sheds are still as popular as ever and can be very easily customised with so many different options, such as 6x4, summerhouses, potting sheds, chalets, workshops and, more popular recently, home offices. He says Featheredge sheds can be expected to last a minimum of 15 years if they are well maintained.

SUMMER READING AND OTHER CHALLENGES… – By Steve Barclay MP
I
t is the fourth year of my Read to Succeed campaign to promote reading in the summer holidays, and we are set for the biggest ever with almost £11,000 donated for books to give away.
This means we will be able to offer all Year 4 and Year 5 pupils a free book for the summer, as the first of the six books that form the Library ‘Summer Reading Challenge’. This year the theme chosen is ‘Space Chase.’ While Brexit is never far from my thoughts as the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, I recognise that people locally as well as nationally have a wide range of views on this issue and also other pressing issues that they need my help to rectify. My constituency office has a regular casework of around 80 cases, but it currently stands at 107. That figure does not include the 50 campaign themes that have generated 750 responses from my office, for issues including climate change, Brexit, food banks, assistance dogs and autism. Fenland has terrain which is very flat. As such it is incredibly well suited to the development of cycle lanes. It is also an area with poor public transport. Jesse Norman MP and Fenland District Council have responded and we expect to see the results of the consultation and strategy paper by the end of this year. Good news for the climate crisis facing our planet right now. I am also shortly visiting McCain Foods in Whittlesey who have such
an incredible self-sustainability model in place that I feel it worthy of a deeper understanding and sharing. McCain Foods have zero waste to landfill and generate 70-80 percent of their own electricity from wind turbines, among other climate-saving strategies.

WATER TOWER PLAY PARK IS REFURBISHED One of Fenland’s oldest play parks has been given a new lease of life following a £57,000 refurbishment. The Water Tower Play Park in Whittlesey has been officially reopened to the delight of local youngsters and their parents. Fenland District Council began the refurbishment project in April following consultation with the local community to identify the equipment and activities they wanted to see in the park. Now it boasts a range of new equipment suitable for toddlers to teens, including a climbing and adventure frame, zip-wire, overhead spinning carousel and rope swing. There is also a climbing frame and slide for the little ones, a basket swing and two-seater swings, new springer seats, and a roundabout and see-saw, as well as new picnic benches. Access on to the road has also been addressed with the addition of a new gate. 12

The refurbishment was made possible thanks to a £47,000 grant from the FCC Communities Foundation (formerly WREN), with additional funding from Fenland District Council and £5000 from Whittlesey Town Council. Whittlesey Town councillor Cllr Ray Whitwell said: “Children’s play equipment in this part of town was lacking for many years, so we’re delighted the FCC Communities Foundation was able to award this grant to help make this project possible. I’m sure Whittlesey residents and their children are delighted to see finally see it in action.” Photo: Celebrating the opening of the newly refurbished play park are, from left, Simon Bell, Fenland District Council’s leisure and open spaces contract manager; Cllr Kay Mayor, FDC chairman and town and district councillor for Whittlesey; Cllr Dee Laws, town and district councillor for Whittlesey; town councillor Cllr Ray Whitwell and Cllr Peter Murphy, FDC’s portfolio holder for the environment

We are pleased to let you know that the next meeting of the Business Forum will be on Wednesday, July 31st at The Falcon Hotel, Whittlesey, 6pm for 6.30pm start. Guest speaker to be announced. See you on the 31st. Chair Joe Jennings
With just over two months to go until this year’s Whittlesey Festival on September 8th organisers can guarantee that there will be something for everyone to enjoy throughout the day from 10am-4pm. One of the regular highlights will enable revellers to take a step back in time as they stroll along Broad Street and Market Street where they will find more than 150 classic vehicles displayed by their proud owners. This will include the unique 1955 BBC Outside Broadcasting truck as well as a variety of motorcycles. New this year will also be a collection of cycles dating from an 1865 ‘Boneshaker’ with wooden wheels and no pedals. Children will be able to compare these to today’s ‘balance bikes’ and see for themselves how people travelled in days gone by. Other models include the 1875 ‘Penny Farthing’ – made by Rudge (with owner in period costume), 1890 ‘Treadle’ bicycle – which had a treadle arm instead of pedals, made locally in Peterborough – and the 1900 Dursley Pedersen ‘Hammock’ bicycle. And as if that isn’t enough there will also be around 25 amazing American, modified and custom-made Hot Rods on display in the Nisa store carpark. As well as numerous stalls throughout the town, not only is there a full programme of music, dance, and entertainment on the Market Square but you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained and occupied in St Mary’s Yard featuring bands and talented singers to suit all tastes including Holly-Jean, James Edmonds, Fyzz Wallis Band, The Chris Watson Trio and many more. There will also be numerous other attractions including crazy golf and magic shows. St Mary’s Church will host more music throughout the day with the Whittlesey Concert Band, choirs from Park Lane and Alderman Jacobs School, Singchronicity, The Whittlesey singers and many more too numerous to mention. Artwork by talented children and students from local primary schools and Sir Harry Smith Community College will also be on display at the Schools Art Exhibition in the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street. For more information about any aspect of the festival please contact Brian Smithyman on 01733 752093; email brians@ whittlesey.cc or Jenny parker on 01733 351005.

WHETHER you’ve already booked a week in the sun, are planning a short family break, or have yet to grab a lastminute getaway, don’t get caught up in the holiday blues this summer. Holiday security is as important to add to your checklist as the usual ‘money, tickets, passport’ mantra. And there is plenty to consider; last year, holiday scamming accounted for around £7 million being ‘stolen’ from holidaymakers, according to research - with more than 5,000 people the victims of holiday booking fraud. Travel association, ABTA, said victims lost an average of £1,380 each, having bought bogus airline tickets, accommodation or organised tours. It said fraudsters were using increasingly sophisticated methods to target people looking for good deals. More than half (53%) of the crimes related to the sale of airline tickets, with scammers particularly targeting people visiting family and friends in Africa and the Indian subcontinent. One in four cases involved accommodation, such as payments to stay in upmarket villas which are either fictitious or are being offered without the owner’s knowledge. Spain and France were among the destinations most commonly affected. Before you click to confirm payment, here are some tips from ABTA, Action Fraud and Get Safe Online: • Check that the booking agent’s web address is legitimate and has not been altered by slight changes to a domain name - such as going from ‘.co.uk’ to ‘.org’. • Don’t just rely on one review - do a thorough online search to check the company’s credentials. • Check whether the company is a member of a recognised trade body such as ABTA. • Wherever possible, pay by credit card and be wary about paying directly into a private individual’s bank account. • Study receipts and invoices, as well as terms and conditions. • If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is! We can also greatly reduce the risk of burglary whilst away; a dark home in the evenings and uncollected mail is a sign to burglars that no one is at home. Also remember, before you go on holiday: • Set up automatic timer switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark. • Register for the Royal Mail’s ‘keepsake’ service. • Move valuable items out of view of windows. • Cut front and back lawns and trim back plants. • Don’t discuss holiday plans on social media. • Ask a trusted neighbour to watch over your home whilst you’re away. If you are considering installing or upgrading any CCTV security / lighting or alarm systems – or even changing the locks – Safe Local Trades & Services has many reputable traders who can help. Visit the website at www.safelocaltrades.com for details of your nearest professional trader. JULY 2019 JULY 2019

HALLOUMI & VEG BURGERS WITH CHILLI YOGHURT
As the barbecue season continues, why not try an alternative to your usual choice of burger? Say hello to halloumi!
Method
• Prepare the barbecue, ready for cooking. Cut the courgettes and aubergine into thin strips. Cut the onion into eight wedges and the halloumi into eight slices.
Ingredients
• Brush the aubergine with oil on both sides, season with salt and pepper, then grill for two-three minutes on both sides until tender and striped (don’t crowd the barbecue – cook in batches if necessary).
Serves 4 2 courgettes 1 large aubergine 1 onion 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 100g halloumi 3 tbsp olive oil 4 bread rolls
• Mix the yoghurt and chilli sauce in a bowl.
60g Greek yoghurt 1½ tbsp sweet or hot chilli sauce Handful of rocket leaves
26
D I S C O V E R I N G
• Remove and keep warm. Repeat step two with the courgettes. Toss the onion with the vinegar and grill as above, then grill the halloumi for 10-20 seconds on each side. Halve the rolls and toast lightly, cut-side down, on the barbecue for about 20 seconds. • To assemble each burger put the courgettes, aubergine, halloumi and onions on the base, then top with the chilli yogurt and rocket. Add the roll tops and serve.

Tips For Choosing The Right Savings And Investments by Eamonn Dorling
1 Think about what you are saving or investing for and the timescale Saving for a holiday in six months will differ from, for example, further education or retirement needs. In the first example you probably don’t need sophisticated investments that tend to fare better over longer time scales. The second example might be short, medium or long term depending on the ages of the child/children. A mixture of strategies over a range of timespans may be more suitable. Retirement planning is usually long term unless you have really left it late in life! 2 Plan and write it down The advantage of having a plan is to visualise the reasons, advantages and what you might have to forfeit to achieve your plans. Writing it down imposes some degree of commitment – a bit like a sport related training plan. 3 Don’t put all your eggs in one basket Diversification is the key to smoothing out investment returns. Sometimes a specific activity shoots ahead of the trend and conversely another sector might underperform for a while. If you are ‘overweight’ in one area – this might have an unwanted bias on your overall plan. A good adviser will review your investment portfolio in line with your plans and requirements. 4 Will you possibly need to interrupt your plan? Hope for the best and prepare for the worst! Give thought to situations that might upset your plans, you don’t want to be tied into a long-term investment that has exit charges if an emergency pops up. 5 What charges will there be? Few things in life are totally free of charges or obligations. A cash deposit might have no charges as such, but your money is being used
by your bank or building society to generate income that you will not benefit from. On the other hand, an investment might produce a gross rate of growth that will be reduced by charges. It is important to understand the ‘net’ return after all charges. There are examples where investments with the highest charges can still provide greater returns than a plan with very low charges! 6 What is a reasonable return on this/ these investments? If you need your savings to grow by 10 percent per year to achieve your objective – you may need to take a high level of risk. This might be acceptable or if the risk is too great, another plan needs to be formulated. 7 Review It is all very well setting a plan in action, but circumstances can change. The reason you are saving might change, legislation including taxes can impact on your plan. Your health might change, your income might alter, and investment markets might change – on this basis I recommend setting up a regular review process to keep your plans on line. A holistic financial review with an independent financial adviser is a great place to start. Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results and any forecast is not a reliable indicator of future performance. The information contained in this editorial should not be construed as offering investment or tax advice.

Matters YOUR MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
I am really pleased and proud to report that at the Whittlesey Town Council Meeting on June 12th, I presented cheques for £2000 each to my Mayor’s Charities for the year – Alzheimer’s Society and Young People’s Counselling Service. A big thank you to everyone who donated, supported and helped me raise this fantastic amount for two very good causes. Now that we are into summertime, the very popular music festivals on the Buttercross are upon us. By the time you read this article the first June event will have already taken place. These enormously successful music events organised by Whittlesey Town Council are now a welcome fixture in the town’s calendar. Please don’t forget that the next two music festivals will take place on: Sunday, July 21st, 2019 with High Rollers and Dale Diamond performing and Sunday, August 18th, 2019 with The Contacts and Steve Walsh performing. Each festival takes place between 2pm-6pm on the Buttercross, Market Square, Whittlesey.

Legal
Going, Going, Gone!
BY JUSTINE WALKER, GRADUATE LEGAL EXECUTIVE, COMMERCIAL PROPERTY
Property auctions have increased in popularity over the last few years, with dozens taking place every month. Many people are now choosing to buy their property this way as it is fast; sales typically complete within 21-28 days of the auction. There is also the chance that you can land a great deal. It is easy to get carried away at the auction, but it is important to remember that following a successful bid, you have entered into a legally binding contract that you won't be able to withdraw from without financial repercussions. For peace of mind we recommend having a solicitor review the legal pack beforehand, as such a review may highlight potential problems which can be addressed or avoided before committing to the purchase. The pack will be available on the auctioneer’s website and includes title information, either in the form of a title register and plan (for registered land) or copy deeds (for unregistered land). The pack also includes any searches that the seller has undertaken, such as a local authority and environmental searches. For example, John is a director of a company that is expanding. John has found the perfect property to renovate and use as the company’s new office. After opening, John is approached by a third party who has the benefit of a restrictive covenant on John’s title that says the property is not to be used for business purposes and that if John does not close his office, they will take enforcement action. John has now incurred significant expense in renovating the property for his business only to find out that he is not permitted to use the property in such a way. This could have been avoided with a professional review.
Having the auction pack reviewed is extremely important if you are reliant on a mortgage or finance to purchase the property. Any funding arrangements need to be agreed before the auction. If you do not have a review, finance could be withdrawn if it later transpires that there is a defect with the property, leaving you to try and fund the purchase through other means. It is important to note that, following a successful bid, the property must be registered into the name given on the auction memorandum of sale. You can’t register the property into joint names if only one name is given on the memorandum. The purchase would need to be completed in the sole name first and then later transferred into joint names. This could cause issues if you are obtaining a mortgage, as those named on the mortgage offer and deed will need to be named as the registered owners of the property. At Fraser Dawbarns, we strive to help our clients find the right deal for their needs. We understand that sometimes there is not much time between a buyer finding an auction lot that they are interested in and the auction itself. Therefore, we are happy to review auction packs at short notice.

Highlights
IT’S A KNOCKOUT SUCCESS! The Field of Dreams – the home of Whittlesey Junior Football Club – was the venue for It’s A Knockout where five local teams faced giants and penguins and the slippery slopes of the inflatables. Watched by a family crowd of close to 500 the hosts came out on top pipping Whittlesey Boxing Club by a narrow five points. Organised by Whittlesey Sports Association, the main event was supported by a Sports Taster Day with some 14 local sports clubs offering free sessions for all who attended.
Lead organiser Robert Windle was delighted with the success of the day and thanked the many financial supporters especially Healthy Fenland for a grant to enable free play and EPD Insulation Group for sponsoring the main event.

Health
Do you Suffer from Painful Verrucae? WE CAN HELP YOU - We are pleased to offer specialist treatments with our podiatrist, Sarah Richards at our March clinic.
Verrucae are a skin infection caused by a virus that invades the skin and causes visible lesions to appear on the skin. They may appear as a plaque of hard skin, with an irregular border and can have black dots (blood vessels) visible. They can be on the soles of the feet or on the toes. The virus is contagious and can grow to bigger lesions and spread on your feet, and to other people. Over a period of time, your immune system can fight the virus to get rid of the verruca, but this specialist treatment can help with the more stubborn verrucae. Podiatrists have been having a lot success with a treatment technique called ‘needling’. This is proving to be a reliable treatment for the removal of warts, and is very practical for the busy person who cannot come in for regular sessions. Other treatments using acids and cryotherapy involve multiple appointments, which can add up a lot
of time out of work and expense, and rely on the patient being fit and healthy. Needling involves usually only one treatment session and a follow-up, six weeks later. The treatment itself involves a local anaesthetic and then, once 'numb', puncturing of the wart with a needle with the aim of innoculating the virus into the host to produce an immune reaction. Whilst the injection is a little unpleasant, the needling is pain-free. The foot is a little sore for a few days, but no worse than most of the other verruca treatments available. The good news is that, if you have multiple warts, we don't have to needle all of them to get a good result. Recent studies have shown verruca dry needling has a success rate of approximately 70 percent. Contact us here at the clinic for more information about these specialist services.

The Friends of St Mary's Church in Whittlesey has thanked everyone who was involved in its annual Arts and Crafts exhibition held in May. Once again, the event was a huge success with a grand total of £1300 being raised overall. There was no shortage of exhibits which were outstanding and showcased so much creativity. Rebecca Cooper, on behalf of the group, said: “We would also like to say a huge thank you firstly to Reverend Nigel and the staff for allowing us to use the church to hold this annual event. Also, a thank you to everyone who helped set up as well as take down the event. A thank you is also extended to all the local shops that donated prizes for the raffle which was held. “The Friends of St Mary's Church would like to thank everyone for their support both during this event as well as all the events that we have taking place throughout the year.”
REACH OUT TO EACH East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) – which has a shop in Whittlesey – is relaunching its successful Be a Name in our Frame campaign. The charity is calling on anyone who has a little time available to help it continue providing care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions, and support for their families.
NEW BENCHES ON THEIR WAY Memorial benches are coming to Whittlesey and surrounding villages. Cambridgeshire Regiment Association (Whittlesey Branch) has been successful in its application to the Tesco plastic bag fund for a grant of £4000 to purchase the benches. The group has also had a donation from the March branch of the Grenadier Guards Association plus an offer from a Whittlesey company to purchase a bench. Details of the locations of the benches will be revealed once all the required administration actions have been completed, enabling the group to place an order. Association chairman Bob Wicks thanked all the shoppers at Tesco's in March for selecting it as its most preferred worthy cause in a recent people’s vote. 38

Ian Nicolson, EACH head of retail and trading, said: “Our shops are extremely successful, in large part down to the fantastic support we receive from kindhearted volunteers. We need people to complete all sorts of tasks, from steaming clothes to dressing windows and operating tills to picking out gems for our equally successful eBay shop. “If you’re interested please do get in touch to talk through how you can help, even if it’s just for an hour a week! Whatever role you do, you can really help make a difference.” The good cause cannot continue what it does without raising more than £4 million from retail every year, highlighting the vital importance of its shops and volunteers to run them. Local Company Undertakes Charity Electrical Work The vision of the Spalding Boxing Academy was that of the now Head Coach, Stuart Possnett, a local self-employed builder. Stuart found a derelict building in Kellett Gate in Spalding, which was extremely run down. He now rents this building, and has been slowly improving it. More work is still planned but what is more difficult is that Stuart earns no money from the Boxing Club, and all the work he does is voluntary; materials are purchased either by himself or have been donated.
“Spalding Boxing Academy has been set up by someone with a big heart and I admire what Stuart has done for his local community, so it was an easy decision to come to help.” Kevin continues, “I have a network of suppliers, and approached one national supplier and asked if they would be interested in donating the materials required, if I myself donated all of my own time to install for free. Rexel Peterborough’s Manager, Kevin Wallace, gladly agreed and everything was supplied for free.” The new fitness suite is now all powered up and open, which we are all really happy about.
Spalding Boxing Club is now a registered charity and hosts approximately seventy children a week. Spalding Boxing Club wanted to add a new area to use as a fitness suite, but had no electricity, so this is where Mane Services Ltd got involved. Mane Services Ltd is a small company, based in March, Cambridgeshire. The founder, Kevin Wright, has dedicated a part of this new business to helping those who cannot afford to pay for the labour to do essential works or projects that will benefit the greater community. Kevin says,
Insane Terrain Run Will Help YPCS Staff at LDH LaDoria have announced that funds from its recent Insane Terrain run will go towards helping Young Peoples Counselling Service (YPCS). As a charity YPCS has doubled its income in the last year but reports the Whittlesey waiting list is getting too big for comfort. It says that while secondary schools in other areas have offered to invest in mental health support for children, the group has to rely solely on the generosity of other supporting organisations, the town Mayor, businesses and fund-raisers in Whittlesey.
JULY 2019
Despite this crisis the group is still able to deliver the service in the town outside the school while it continues to appeal for more support. If you would like to donate please go to www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/ldhladoria

Health
Coping With Life After Loss? “What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes part of us” – Helen Keller The loss of a loved one can completely rock our world, taking us through a turbulence of challenging and difficult emotions. Our first thoughts when we think about grief may be one of great sadness and this is quite natural. There are those times however when the loss of the loved one raises unanswered questions, unresolved issues or unearths emotions; anger, anxiety, depression, shame and denial. Emotions we may not have experienced before and we struggle to comprehend. We often think of grief as the loss of a loved one, but we can suffer the effects of grief moving through a variety of life’s obstacles; following divorce, theft, redundancy or loss of a treasured item and if these things happen in succession can lead us to suffer complicated grief. To put it clearly, grief can happen whenever our safe and familiar world is rocked. Navigating the different phases of grief alone can be very scary. When in our depths of despair, we can feel very lonely even in a crowded room of loved ones, grief can be very isolating. We can put pressure on ourselves to ‘get over it’ and in our culture of a ‘stiff upper lip’ we feel unable to
explore the emotions that we are trying to deal with in a public way. If you feel that you have talked yourself out with those you know and that you just want a listening ear, if you are suffering with other mental health issues such as depression or anxiety or you just want to work through the emotions that you just can’t understand, then I am here to listen and support.
How Can Counselling Help? • Helps you to navigate through the difficult emotions that you may not feel able to share with those close to you • Helps you to have a clearer understanding of how the grief process works • Helps you to identify with your coping mechanisms during those difficult times • Offers support while you are identifying new ways of coping with life without your loved one • Helps you to look at those areas that may be preventing you move through the natural grief process • Allows you the opportunity to share your inner feelings in a non-judgmental confidential environment.

Pets’ Corner
Keeping Our Pets Free Of Parasites by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre
Our pets can pick up fleas, worms and ticks in a variety of ways, from their environment (even from just sniffing, licking or rooting around in the dirt), from rodents, birds, slugs, snails and foxes, other animals’ faeces, other infected animals and from their mother when inside the womb or feeding from her. Worms There are different species of worms that can infect our pets; roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms and whipworms. They live in our pets' small intestine feeding on blood and ingested food. Healthy pets sometimes show no signs, but if they do you may see a pot belly, excessive bottom cleaning, poor coat, vomiting and/or diarrhoea, weight loss, lack of energy or poor growth. Our pets will shed worm eggs into the environment if untreated, affecting other animals and our own health, especially pregnant women and children. Fleas Are small (approx. 1/8 inch), wingless, fast moving insects with back legs designed for jumping; it is easier to find flea dirt (little black specks) in our pets’ coat. If you brush these black specks onto damp paper, you will see a reddish circle appear around it. They are especially active in the summer and usually picked up by our pets from their environment. Fleas lay dormant in protective cocoons until the presence of an animal stimulates them to hatch. Ninety-five percent of a flea population is in our homes, not on our pets where the eggs, larvae and pupae are living waiting to develop into adult fleas. It is important to treat both the environment and your pet. Some of our pets can be especially sensitive to flea bites causing nasty irritations to their skin and, for the very young, anaemia. Fleas can also transmit viral and bacterial disease.
bean. They are not only uncomfortable for our pets, but can also transmit very serious diseases, such as Lyme disease and Babesiosis. If you find a tick on your pet do not pull or squeeze it as you will increase the risk of disease; remove using a tick remover or take them to your vets. How to prevent parasites in our pets • Check your pet every day for ticks or signs of fleas/flea dirt. • Regularly treat all your pets using appropriate products. • Treat your home with an appropriate product. • Remove any ticks you find as soon as possible. • Always pick up after your dog has passed faeces. • Clean their bedding. • Seal and discard hoover bags/clean hoover. • Prevent your pet from sniffing or eating other animals’ poop and soil. • If your pet scavenges or hunts treat them more frequently. • Wash your hands regularly. • Prevent them from investigating snails or slugs and make sure your product also covers lungworm. • Avoid unprocessed raw meats for your pet. Are you travelling abroad with your pet? There are parasites abroad which we do not usually see here in the UK e.g. heartworm carried by mosquitoes. Speak to your veterinary surgeon before you travel.
Ticks Ticks lie await on the tips of long grass for when our pets pass through and then jump onto them and pierce through our pets’ skin with their mouthparts. They can be hard to see initially, but once they start feeding, they can swell to the size of a coffee

ONE-OFF CHANCE TO HEAR AWARD-WINNING BAND The world-famous Foden’s Band is coming to the local area for one night only. It will be performing on Saturday, September 14th, at the Cresset, Peterborough with the city’s awardwinning choirs, Peterborough Male Voice Choir, Peterborough Voices and Peterborough Youth Choir, who over the last few years have established a track-record of bringing some of the world’s top brass bands to the city, including Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Black Dyke Band, and Brighouse and Rastrick.
LES (82) LEAPS FOR CHARITY An 82-year-old local man is all set to make a charity skydive. Les Paul, who hails from March, is planning the jump to raise money for The British Heart Foundation. The octogenarian, who now lives in Peterborough and works as a warehouse operative for automotive parts distributor Thor at its branch at Fengate, will take to the air at Sibson Airfield near Peterborough on Sunday, July 14th, 2019. It will be the fifth time Les will have made a skydive having in the past raised funds for Alzheimer’s, Air Ambulance, Prostate Cancer and other charities. Les, who took his first skydive aged 73, said: “I really enjoy doing it. When I did my first one, I was a bit disappointed that I wasn’t more nervous. Each one is different and is a memorable experience. If I can raise some money for The British Heart Foundation by donations from companies, such as Thor, and friends and colleagues, then so well and good.”
Consistently ranked as one of the finest brass bands in the world, Foden’s Band has won twelve British Open titles, fourteen National Championships of Great Britain and six unparalleled double hat-tricks and in 2012 won a rare and exceptional 'Double', being crowned British Open and National Champions. A household name in the world of brass bands for more than one hundred years, Foden’s Band continues to thrill audiences with its virtuosity and flexibility in a huge range of styles, far beyond the boundaries of the usual brass band concert repertoire. Conductor Howard Snell said: "Foden's Band is a musical Magic Carpet. It continually takes the listener to places that few other ensembles rarely even approach.” Tickets for the concert, which starts at 7.30pm, are available from £18.50 at the Cresset box office, by phone on 01733 265705, or at www.peterboroughsings.org.uk
The great-grandfather has been involved in the motor industry since 1958 when he started work at Fitzhugh’s garage in March before going on to work in the parts distribution sector including a three-year spell running the Peterborough branch of Gaedor. If you would like to donate, please contact Les on 01733 342582 (evenings only). 48

The Local Music Scene
A Sound Canvas by Dave Bailey
T
This Month: In-tents Music he sun is up (we hope) and the stages are set; therefore, it must be festival time. With so many festivals offering the camping option, what are the pros and cons?
From Glastonbury to Party in the Park, festivals come in all styles and sizes from on the day ticketed to booking for a pitch twelve months in advance and most counties and towns have events throughout the year. Organisations are also offering package deals and week/weekend passes including multiple stages coupled with free town centre performance – there are options to suit all pockets and musical tastes. As with any outdoor event Britain is guaranteed to get unpredictable weather which is often the main concern. Having experienced all the extremes ranging from a quagmire following two weeks of rain and the hottest summer on record, preparation and protection is essential. Storm-proof tents with a good quality integral ground sheet and waterproof and wick-able clothing is essential, but the location of the pitch is also key to staying dry. Pitching up at the bottom of a hill may be great for the stagger back to bed but when the heavens open a lilo may be the better option to a sleeping bag. Whilst mud can be a great leveller the effects of sunburn, dehydration and sunstroke may lay you low and result in a trip to the first aid tent or at worse the local hospital.

Looking after your valuables is always a concern especially if in keeping with the site safety initiative for parking off site. A waterproof ‘bum bag’ for cash, cards, keys and phone is a must also for keeping dry any medications you may need to take. As organisations fall under the spotlight and pressures to be eco-aware and apply conditions for attendees, what you are allowed to take and leave behind are subject to checks. Catering outlets and merchandisers will be scrutinised for hygiene and environmental regulations and must confirm on their application forms that they will comply. The sea of abandoned tents at some of the camp sites over the last few years has provided the organisers with disposal and clean-up issues. The aftermath of skips of bottles, cans, clothing and toiletries (the cost of sorting, recycling and disposal) will be reflected in the entrance fee. As a rule, what you arrive with you need to take away, with most festivals limiting the size of tents and prohibiting large gazebos. Whichever event you go to, keep safe, enjoy the vibe, and please leave the venue as you found it... The regular open mic and acoustic sessions can be found at: www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm

The Importance of Daily Prayer Give prayer a chance. It needs to be our daily task to pray for the world in which we live. As we do this, we place before him the needs of our world and look for his response. It is not that God requires us to tell him what is going on, he knows this already. He wants us to demonstrate to him that we know what is going on. In the knowing we ask questions and seek answers. What can be done to make the world a better place? What can I do to make my part of the world a better place? When a disaster or tragedy strikes, we tend to focus on what happened; the eruption of a volcano or the detonation of a bomb. All too easily we can fail to see the acts of compassion, courage and selflessness that occur. When we do direct our attention to these acts of pure humanity, we should also be able to see God at work. God answering prayer and being alongside victims and those helping them. So, commit yourself to daily prayers for the world in which you live. Allow God to show you his grace at work. Become someone who makes a difference. Someone who makes the world a better place. Times of prayer will include acts of praise, sorrow, intercession and thanksgiving. A straightforward tradition involves the Lord’s Prayer said at regular times of day. For example, on getting up, at midday and when going to bed. Here is the text, so please use it as you find appropriate. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. There was a time not so long ago when many people would have known this prayer off by heart. Not so these days and hence the reason I encourage you to use it in your daily lives. God bless you all Revd Nigel 01733 203676 56

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH
Let Go of Resentment Letting go of resentment can be hugely challenging as there will always be justifiable reasons to hold on to it. One problem with resentment is that you never know how strong its hold is until you try to lay it down. Forty-six students from Erasmus University’s Rotterdam School of Management in the Netherlands participated in a study to discover the mental and physical effects of holding on to resentment. Twenty-three students were asked to ‘write about the time they were seriously offended by another person, yet, chose to forgive them.’ The other twenty-three students were asked to ‘write about a similar incident, but where they chose to hold on to resentment and not forgive them.’ All forty-six students were taken to the top of a nearby hill and asked to estimate its gradient. Interestingly, those who had written about their experience of forgiving someone estimated the hill to be less steep than those who were still dwelling on their feelings of resentment and unforgiveness. Our nation’s town and city streets are becoming places of mindless acts of violence. News reports often show distraught families wrestling with the trauma of living the rest of life without their loved one, while the perpetrators often hide behind the misguided loyalty of others or are released in just a few years. I am always impressed with the courage of those who refuse to allow such mindlessness to rule the rest of their life by choosing to forgive. However, my years spent in counselling has shown that some still wrestle with the confused emotion of knowing, and genuinely wanting to forgive, but the pain of loss throws them into conflict with themselves. Our church counts it an honour to love and encourage them, and anyone facing challenging situations. Our Sunday service at 10.45am will inspire you with hope. Don't Fall Victim To This - Scammers
T
In recent weeks we have seen many people coming into the shop that have fallen victim to a ‘Tech support scam’ – where a minimum of £500 per time has been lost by the customer.
hese scams are typically run from small offices in India; however, they can be run from anywhere. The scammers can pull the scams in many ways, and this article, the first of two or three on the matter, is going to explain how they do it, why they do it and, more importantly, the steps you need to take to prevent it happening to you. Effectively, here in the shop I was ‘ethical hacking’ or acting as ‘white hat’. Under no circumstances should you try to do this at home, or try to contact scammers, as I took all the necessary precautions to protect my identity, but it could have still been unsafe for both me and my computer. Initially, I completed research into the different scam currently taking place. Then I went to the expense of buying ‘burner phones and sims’ so they could not be traced back then I started contacting some scammers we had identified. Our first hack involved a small office in India with three scammers that I then found out was a ‘subsidiary’ of a larger office with more than 40 ‘employees’. The first office I rang, someone called Mike Wells answered the phone and greeted me with a friendly “Hello, this is Microsoft technical support. How may I help you today?” The first red flag in this call is his name, every morning the scammers go into the call centre they are greeted with an Excel file containing their scamming name or pseudonym that they will use for the day. Meaning they don’t have to give out their real name to anybody but if someone calls back and asks for a specific person the scammer knows who they should be transferred to. In this case the real name of the scammer talking to me was Rizwen. Scammers will claim that they are from companies such as, BT, Microsoft, Apple, Sky, Vodaphone and many others. This is a massive red flag because these companies DO NOT contact you via the phone and
they also don’t issue any pages on the internet saying your computer has been infected etc. About three minutes into the call ‘Mike’ asked if he could have remote access to my computer to “Fix the viruses that have been infecting my computer and take out the hackers.” So, I loaded up a VM (virtual machine completely separate from my computer but still running on the computer which was to protect my anonymity) and gave them access to this so I could see what they would do on someone else’s computer. However, before I gave them access, I put a file on my desktop called ‘banking Information.pdf’. Apart from them downloading that file without me knowing (or so they thought) and being disappointed that it was just a blank document, all they then did was use scare tactics to make me think that something was wrong with the computer. This is again a massive red flag. None of the companies listed above will do remote assistance or ask for access to your computer. So, if you didn’t already know that it was a scam by this point then don’t go forward with the call just hang up no matter how convincing they seem. We will be continuing this article next month but, in the meantime, if you receive any calls from ANYONE purporting to be BT, or whatever – JUST HANG UP, even if they phone two or three times. And, as a special offer to protect our customers, if you bring your laptop/computer to us at AA Whittlesey Computers during the next two months we will supply you with a hard drive back-up of your computer as well as a running schedule so you can never lose your data, in the event of a scam/hard drive failure/Windows corruption – and all for only £65!! Happy computing, and more on this topic next month. Deborah, Len and Oliver

DIRECTORY FEATURE OF THE MONTH
MB INTERIORS
Whittlesey-based MB Interiors specialises in all types of work, from kitchens, bathrooms and flooring through to garage conversions. The company was formed five years ago by Mark Bedford (38), who has more than 20 years’ experience of interior work. He said: “I carry out all types of interior work with kitchens, bathrooms and garage conversions probably being the most popular. Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. For more information, please see www. volkswagen.co.uk/owners/wltp or consult your retailer. Data correct at 03/19. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information. Official fuel consumption figures for the Tiguan model range in mpg (litres/100km): combined 29.7 (9.5) – 50.4 (5.6). Combined CO2 emissions 122 – 175 g/km.
