Meet The Discovering Team!
Claire Saberton
Hi, I’m Claire, co-owner with my business partner Andy and publisher of all the Discovering Magazines titles. I oversee all the publications, working very closely with all my lovely team to achieve our vision of producing a well-read, community-driven magazine. I am extremely proud to have achieved my personal goal of producing a well-respected brand in each of our market towns. When I have any spare time, I enjoy spending it with my family and especially our puppy, George x
Andy Armstrong
It all started for me fifteen years ago when I launched the magazine in its original black and white format (The Whittlesey Advertiser). To see the growth of the magazine from what it was then to what it is today has been phenomenal and I would like to thank all the businesses, contributors and deliverers that have supported the team.
Paula Peake
Paula is one of our experienced members of our sales team and has a wealth of experience in marketing and great customer service skills. Paula enjoys travelling , theatre, live music and spending time with her family, most of all her five grandchildren!

Andy Hurst
Andy Hurst is the Editor of Discovering Whittlesea and Discovering March magazines. Andy is a fully qualified journalist, starting his career on the Peterborough Evening Telegraph. He lives in March, where he runs his own public relations consultancy, called Hurst Media Services.
As Group Editor of Discovering Magazines, I have the task of ensuring that what appears on the pages of our five magazines is as accurately compiled and carefully presented as possible. Having taught English locally for over twenty years, I thought I'd seen the back of correcting textual errors, but my five, very happy years in this present role have taught me that there's still alot to be done each month. Oh yes, and I compile the puzzle page and write the occasional feature and business profile too!
Emma Gunner
Hi, I’m Emma and I have been a designer for Discovering magazines for nearly four years, and a graphic designer for eighteen years. I love working for Discovering magazines. I get to work from home, which fits around my family and have a fabulous team to work alongside! 2

I am the Editor of Discovering Wisbech magazine, a sales person, and I manage the Social Media for March, Whittlesea and Wisbech. Whoever you, whatever you do, I know you'll enjoy our magazines and that's why I love my job!
Cheryl Jakes
I have been with Discovering Magazines for six years, having joined to look after the accounts for all of our magazines. I now look after our Deeping magazine and some of our advertisers in Whittlesey too. I love to dance, watch musicals and have family time with my four children.
Hilary Bloomer
I have been working for Discovering Magazines for five years and produce the events pages for Discovering Bourne and Discovering Deeping and also co-ordinate the Schools News and the monthly gardening tips.
Sarah Gumbley
I've been a designer for twenty-two years and joined Discovering back in 2016. Working on the mags, along with two kids and a labrador who all constantly demand attention, I often find myself wondering where my days go... and where these grey hairs are coming from... then I pour myself a nice glass of red!

I’m Rob and I’m a designer, I generally faff about being pretentious and trying to look busy. Have the occasional fit about fonts and low res images. Specialist in Prosecco and gin at work parties!
AUGUST 2019
Introduction
Welcome to Your August Issue. As an unabashed football fan, I always feel rather crestfallen at the end of the season. What am I going to do during the summer? What can I watch on TV to fill this gap in my life? What I always fail to remember is that sport goes on throughout the whole year, not just the winter months. This summer has seen the women’s football team’s brave bid for glory at the World Cup, Lewis Hamilton’s record-breaking sixth British Grand Prix victory, another epic Wimbledon Tennis tournament and – best of all – England’s fantastic victory in the Cricket World Cup final. And as I write this there is still more great sport to come, including the Open Golf championship and the Rugby Union World Cup, plus the new football season! And I know I’m not alone in enjoying this myriad of sports. For there is no doubt that from the conversations I’ve had and the comments I’ve heard the efforts of our sportsmen and women has given the country a timely boost and has been a welcome diversion from the protracted Brexit saga. What’s more it is sure to give local sports clubs a fillip with enthusiasts keen to emulate their heroes…
Andy
“I love how summer just wraps its arms around you like a warm blanket.” Kellie Elmore’s words and not mine, but the last few days have certainly made us all feel that it’s arrived at last. For many people, August means only one thing – another school year is over, and the children (and teachers!) are enjoying their well-earned, six-week break. To all the parents reading, I’ll let you decide whether or not that’s a good thing! One way to help fill those long days in the weeks ahead will be to enter our ever-popular seaside treasure hunt in this month’s issue, for which the prize is an impressive £50. Our “What’s on” and entertainment guide is full of great ideas too, so hopefully you won’t be hearing “I’m bored” and “There’s nothing to do” too many times this month!

That’s The Spirit:
Gin G
in’s basic flavour is from juniper berries and gin-making can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Today, many gins are widely available. There are different styles of gins, plus flavoured and very aromatic gins, too. Gin cocktails continue to be hugely popular, with many ‘devotees’. Warner Edwards are creators and distillers of hand-crafted, artisan gins. Their Victoria’s Rhubarb Gin is named because the original rhubarb crop, from which the current rhubarb crops are descended, was grown in the kitchen garden of Buckingham Palace, during Queen Victoria’s reign. The mouthfeel and palate enjoy the tangy sweetness. Also, Prosecco makes a great mix with this gin. Other Warner Edwards hand-crafted gins include their splendid Harrington Dry. www. warneredwards.com. The Cotswolds Distillery, established in 2014, produces an excellent quality, hand-crafted, dry gin, which is unfiltered, so as to retain all the flavour of the botanical extracts and essential oils. This classic production is produced in small batches and is well-balanced, with an ‘inviting’ nose of citrus amongst the bouquet’s appeal. The mouthfeel and palate continue the enjoyment, which is clean and crisp. This exceptional gin is part of their range. www.cotswoldsdistillery.com. Gordon’s is a very well-established company. Premium Pink Distilled Gin I found refreshing and

aromatic. The inclusion of raspberry, strawberry and redcurrant ‘natural flavourings’, make for a superbly-balanced and often-selected gin production. There is another impressive gin, inspired by Gordon’s original pink gin recipe of 1880. This is clearly a company dedicated and committed to producing and supplying highquality drinks. www.gordonsgin.com. Chase Rhubarb & Bramley Apple is a single-estate production, from the Chase Distillery Company, which distils from the field to the bottle and has an excellent range of drinks. This gin is carefully crafted by distilling G B gin with freshly-pressed rhubarb and Bramley apple juice, which comes directly from the farm. This impressive production is perfect anytime and great for spritz cocktails. www.chasedistillery.co.uk. I located these gins at Waitrose, the food and retail division of John Lewis Partnership. Founded during 1904, Waitrose possesses a royal warrant to supply groceries and offers food and beverages of outstanding quality, many of which are multi awardwinning. www.waitrose.com. As always, enjoy!

Worried about
YOUR ORAL HEALTH? Are your gums sore or swollen? You may have gum disease and Whittlesey Dental Care can help.
What causes gum disease? Gum disease is caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth. Plaque is a sticky substance that contains bacteria. If you do not remove plaque from your teeth by brushing them, it builds up and irritates your gums (gingivitis). If gingivitis is left untreated this can progress into a more serious condition called periodontitis (gum disease). Toxins from build-up of bacterial plaque not only affect your gum tissue, but also the bone and ligaments that support your teeth. As the infection causes disease to the bone and supporting tissues, your teeth may eventually become loose and need to be treated surgically or removed. But even advanced cases of periodontal disease don't have to progress to this point. Treating periodontal disease
What is gum disease? Gum disease is an inflammation of the gum line that can progress to affect the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth. The three stages of gum disease – from least to most severe – are gingivitis, periodontitis and advanced periodontitis. Gum disease is a very common condition where the gums become swollen, sore or infected. Most adults in the UK have gum disease to some degree, and most people experience it at least once. If you have gum disease, your gums may bleed when you brush your teeth and you may have bad breath. This early stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis. If gingivitis is not treated, a condition called periodontitis can develop. This affects the tissues that support teeth and hold them in place. If periodontitis is not treated, the bone in your jaw may be damaged and small spaces can open up between the gum and teeth. Your teeth can become loose and may eventually fall out. 14
D I S C O V E R I N G

Mild cases of gum disease (gingivitis and pocket depths up to 4mm) can usually be treated by maintaining a good level of oral hygiene. This includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day and using interdental aids once daily. You should also make sure you go for regular dental/ hygiene check-ups. By visiting your dentist or dental hygienist we are able to give your teeth a thorough clean and remove any hardened plaque (tartar) that you are unable to remove yourself at home. The most important part of the appointment however is to show you how to clean your teeth effectively to help prevent plaque building up in the future. It is proven that 90 percent of effective cleaning is performed at home – the hygienist is here to support you to achieve this. If you have moderate/severe gum disease (pocket depths 5mm or above), you'll usually need to have further medical and dental treatment. AUGUST 2019

Church Matters WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH
Oh, I’m Coping... I couldn’t possibly remember the times I’ve heard this reply to my very sincere question “How are things with you today?” I know some may use these words, but really only want to hear the normal “Oh, I’m coping”, allowing them to leave feeling satisfied that they have shown an interest in your life. Those who are an established part of our church family know that’s not how I pastor the congregation and have got used to me looking them straight in the eye and gently saying – “That’s not what your eyes are telling me – how are you really? – do we need to talk?” Despite the ever-increasing volume of gadgets coming onto the market, all with a view to making life easier, we are faced with a generation constantly overwhelmed by the inability to cope, whether in the workplace or home. So, I’m not about to suggest yet another ‘fix all solution’. I looked at the definition of ‘coping’ and it said ‘to deal successfully with a difficult situation.’ Another said, ‘to face and deal with responsibilities, problems or difficulties, successfully.’ So coping is not about keeping a stiff upper lip or pushing unpleasant things still further down inside us while putting a smile on our face. It’s about facing up to them rather than burying it, no matter how painful or difficult that might be. Our varying personalities will of course affect how easy or hard we will find it to really deal with whatever is throwing our life into turmoil. While the ultimate solution to our inability to cope may be vastly different to someone else, the good news is, ‘it can be found’ and you do not need to face it alone. No one can do the actual coping for you, but they can be an effective support as you face up to your turmoil and take control of your life again.

ardley’s is a new salon serving Whittlesey and surrounding villages with many services under one roof.
It is a family business established in 2017 and its name was chosen by the head of the family Chris Wardley. When he received the news he had cancer at the age of 52, he decided to set up a business that would help him should he never be able to return to his normal job of nearly 40 years as a charge hand. Sadly, he lost his battle in December 2018. Chris had four children and two grandchildren. Ian and his partner live in Whittlesey with their two children Emmilee and Tommy while his two younger children Chelsea (24), a level 3+ beautician and lash expert and George (19), a barber, are both directors of the company. With his partner Tori, again a Level 3 hairdresser, barber and beautician, they will run both branches along with their mum Karen.
They currently have a treatment room to rent in the salon and are open to offers. They offer nail services but not extensions and again are looking for the right established person to join their team – hoping to bring jobs and opportunities to Whittlesey. The opening weekend will be announced soon on Facebook and in the salon window with free sunbed tasters and half price offers on treatments. Wardley’s will offer consultations on hair and skin types as well. Here you can meet the team and, hopefully, Whittlesey residents will come along to support this new venture which has been brought to the town and enjoy a glass of Prosecco and a cake or two…
The company is said to have an ‘amazing’ hairdresser Olga, who is over-and-above a Level 4 hairdresser with advanced training in colouring and hair ups. Every staff member has had advanced – and ongoing – training and the company is offering to rent a chair to the right candidate with clientele. Wardley's will be joined by chiropodists who also work in Harley Street, London, offering not just basic podiatry but ultrasound and steroid injections etc. The salon will have both stand up and lay down sunbeds with the fastest tubes on the market – imported American tubes and, in some, collagen tubes, offering the fastest tan and collagen release for your skin at the same time. They use all the newest and best products on the market, including vegan-friendly items, and offer SEN treatments too. Aesthetics is on offer from lip fillers to ‘bum lifts’ from Sarah their nurse who is also a trainer with her own academy in Norfolk. 18

Health
Staying Safe in Summer Summer time is here and so are sunny days spent outdoors, splashing in pools and relaxing on the beach. However, summer can cause some extra wear and tear on the body. Most people usually protect themselves by using sunscreen and sunglasses. But many will forget to look after two of the most important and neglected parts of the body – their feet. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself, especially your feet, from salt water, sand, and other summer scares: • Remember to apply sunscreen to feet, especially the tops and fronts of ankles. Don't forget to reapply regularly if you're in and out of the water! • When out of the water, wash and dry feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, and apply an anti-fungal medication on itchy skin. Clean, dry feet resist disease. • Pass up sharing towels to avoid developing athlete's foot and other diseases that can easily be spread. • Take special care of toenails, which are especially vulnerable around damp areas. Injury to the nail bed may make it more susceptible to infection so see your podiatrist at the first sign of discoloration or infection. • To avoid toe and ankle injuries, wear shoes that are specific to the activity or sport you're participating in. Never play Frisbee in sandals and be sure to wear boots when working outside and mowing the lawn. • Give yourself plenty of time to break in new shoes before going on trips where you'll be doing lots of walking. And when trying on new shoes, make sure you have on the same socks you plan on wearing with them. • When on holiday abroad and in the ocean, be cautious of jellyfish that often bite at feet
and ankles and sharp coral that can cut the undersides of feet. Keeping sandals or water shoes on at all times is a good idea to prevent stings, cuts, and other injuries.
• Watch out for prickly sea urchin spines when taking walks on the beach. Avoid walking barefoot; wear an old pair of running shoes or flip-flops to protect yourself from jagged rocks, shells, spines, and debris that could float ashore. • And most importantly, swim, walk, and enjoy the summer!! Walking is the best form of exercise for your feet and swimming is a great alternative for those suffering from tendonitis and plantar fasciitis, which can make other types of exercise painful.

Keeping it in the Family: A Guide to Agricultural Succession Planning
BY KIEREN CROSS, PARTNER, PRIVATE CLIENT AND AGRICULTURE
One of the biggest worries in the agricultural industry is effective planning for the next generation to take over the farm. A recent survey has said that it is the biggest concern for 15% of farmers and that 60% of farmers had made no provision at all for succession. Another survey of young farmers put that figure as high as 70%. Younger farmers tend not to bring succession up with their parents because they don’t want to cause embarrassment or offence. However, the conversation is important if everyone is serious about protecting the farm through the generations. It is important to understand that succession planning is not just about retirement and inheritance, but it is about putting a plan in place for the continued success of the business which takes into account short-term goals and the longer-term vision for the farm. To start, you should draw up a list of the farm’s assets and then have a discussion with all family members who are involved along with a solicitor and an accountant. Professionals tend to keep the meeting more business-focused and less emotional. Having everyone together also reduces professional expenses as the same conversation doesn’t need to be had multiple times.
Having the correct documentation in place helps everyone to know where they stand which can make a handover to the next generation a smoother and less fraught process. Key documents would be wills for each family member, LPAs where appropriate and partnership or shareholder agreements. It is worth noting that children who have given up most of their lives to work in a family business for low pay on the promise that they will inherit the farm will usually benefit in court if it is felt that an inheritance treats them unfairly. Guest v Guest and Davies v Davies (which is often referred to as ‘Cowshed Cinderella’) are both examples of this.
Clients often want advice for when some of the children have worked on the farm and plan to continue the business on their parents’ retirement, but other children have chosen different careers.
The actual handover is a key moment in succession planning, 16% of farmers believe that the next generation doesn’t have the right skills and experience to take over the running of the business, so we strongly recommend building the training of the next generation into your plan.
Treating farming and non-farming children fairly does not mean equally and succession planning allows you to lay out how all family members will benefit so everyone is informed.
There is a lot to consider (much of it outside the scope of this article) and a solicitor specialising in agricultural law can help you plan for your farm’s success for years to come.

Matters INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED PERFORMERS COME TO WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL The Whittlesey Festival is only weeks away with a whole day of entertainment, music, stalls and activities planned from 10am-4pm on Sunday, September 8th. One of the headline acts this year will be the internationally renowned Ukrainian Cossack dancers ‘Orlyk’ who will be performing on the day which is certainly something not to be missed. Orlyk was established in 1949 and is the representative dance ensemble of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB). Based in Manchester, it has been Orlyk's aim over the last 70 years to share Ukraine’s rich culture and history with others, performing both in the UK and abroad to keep this significant part of their heritage alive throughout the generations. The exhilarating high kicks, jumps and spins combined with traditional folk dancing are performed to live harmonic Ukrainian melodies with punchy rhythms in handmade authentic costumes to reflect the character of the dances. As well as the superb showcase of art from local schools at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street, there will be a display of work by professional artist and photographer Jim Cooke. Jim, who has exhibited his work all over the world, was formerly senior lecturer of photography at Brighton University and is currently working on a project called ‘Middle Level’ capturing the beauty of the Fenland waterways and landscapes. He will also be doing some presentations on festival day, details of which can be found in the programme, free copies of which will be available in local shops and premises in the town from the end of August onwards as well as on festival day. For more information about the festival please contact Brian on 01733 752093 email brians@ whittlesey.cc or Jenny Parker on 01733 351005. 24

REFEREES SCORE A MAJOR SUCCESS The Peterborough & Fenland Referee Development Scheme, which is part of the Peterborough Referees Association and members of the Whittlesey Sports Association, has won two prestigious national awards at the Referees' Association awards evening. Peterborough RA was the only RA in the country to win two awards out of the five possible categories at the event, which took place at the Devere Hotel, Hopwood, Milton Keynes, which was packed with local and national referees. First award was for social media & digital excellence where the judges highlighted its Facebook page which contained 15,000 photographs as well as mini films and positive stories. The second was for outstanding contribution to the community highlighting its association with Vivacity, working in schools in Peterborough and Whittlesey. Chairman Robert Windle said: “To be recognised on the national stage and to receive two awards is a fantastic achievement and tribute to the dedicated committee members of the association. We are grateful to sponsors, grant supporters and the schools in Whittlesey that have given us the opportunity to work outside the conventional expectations of a regular Referees' Association.” Photo: PRA secretary Neil Smith with Paul Field, chairman of The National Referees' Association, and Robert Windle, chairman of Peterborough RA

COME AND SEE THE NEW TOWN COUNCIL OFFICES
PARK LANE PRIMARY SCHOOL IS 50!
Whittlesey residents are being given the opportunity to look around the new town council offices. On Saturday, September 28th Whittlesey Town Council will be hosting a preview day of the new offices in Queen Street between 10am-12noon before they are officially opened the following day at 3pm by the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire His Honour Neil McKittrick DL.
Staff, children and FOPLS from Park Lane School have staged a massive summer extravaganza on the school field to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary.
SIR HARRY SMITH CAREERS FAIR IS A HIT Sir Harry Smith Community College has held its biennial whole school careers fair with more than 50 local and national employers, apprenticeship providers, FE and HE institutions available to speak to all students throughout the day. A spokesperson said: “It was a fantastic event and all of the students thoroughly enjoyed it and benefitted from learning about different pathways.”
Each year group performed a song or dance from each of the decades since Park Lane has been open. These ranged from Beetles songs all the way up to an S Club 7 medley. In addition, the schoolchildren sold items they had made and manned traditional fete stalls like hook a duck, whack the rat and welly wanging. Alongside all of this was an art gallery where children presented work linked to each of the decades, ranging from Andy Warhol to Bansky. Hundreds of parents, grandparents and friends of the school attended and there were even guest appearances from previous members of staff who have worked at the school over the last 50 years. The event was a phenomenal success with nearly £2000 being raised, a recent record for the school. Mr Ingham, head of upper school, said: "We are incredibly lucky to have so many parents and friends who came along to support the event. Watching the children perform with such confidence was brilliant to see and the whole school felt a real part of the day. Thank you to FOPLS and everyone else who has supported the event."

Your Garden
August Gardening Tips August is the month when you “reap what you have sown!” What could be more rewarding than to eat a meal where the fresh produce is the result of your hard work?Make sure that you harvest crops such as courgettes, runner and French beans regularly before they grow too large and stringy – the more you pick the more you get! Trips to the allotment or vegetable plot will be more about watering and harvesting than planting but there are still one or two crops that you can sow: mainly lettuces and salad leaves, spring onions, radishes, Japanese onion seeds (in situ), and a last batch of carrots and turnips. As you harvest your crops and create some space, you can transplant winter and spring cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli and kale, and sow a few more seeds for spring cabbage. Keep them well-watered, and planting them through weed suppressant material should help keep the moisture in and the soil warmer. Also keeping the weeds at bay is important (which in the drier months –if we get any – should be less prolific); a regular hoeing should be sufficient. To retain precious moisture, it can help to add mulch around your crops to prevent excess evaporation in drier weather, preferably immediately after it has rained. Other jobs for this month include: • Prune gooseberry and currant bushes. • Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot. • Cut to the ground all raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year, and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit. • Continue pinching out tomatoes and don’t forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden - also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees. • Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems. • Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow green manure such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil, or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil. • Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year. • Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. • Be on the lookout for potato blight, especially if the weather is damp and humid; cut off the stems at ground level as soon as you see the tell-tale brown fungal patches. This prevents the blight reaching the tubers.
Enjoy the fruits of your labour! 28

Consumer Advice
Summer’s here, and whatever the weather, we Brits just love our barbecues! A great excuse for a spot of alfresco dining with family and friends, the popular social gathering offers the chance for the guys to show off their grill skills, the ladies to rustle up a tasty summer punch and the kids to have endless fun. If this sounds like your ideal barbecue (and what’s not to love?) then don’t allow anything to spoil it. The sad fact is that barbecues are involved in many hundreds of accidents that occur in the garden each year. The last time that figures were collected, through the Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System (HASS/ LASS) in 2002, an estimated 1,800 people visited A&E in the UK having had an accident involving a barbecue. The most common types of barbecue-related accidents, as shown by the HASS/LASS figures, were: • Burn/scald/other injury related to fire or flame – 800 • Cut/tear by sharp edges - 200 The vast majority of barbecue accidents (1,400) happened in a home setting. Some of the accidents lead to very serious burns, usually as a result of using an accelerant such as petrol to light the fuel. However, planning ahead and following some simple safety tips will ensure your barbecue is fun-filled and not a flaming failure. • Keep your barbecues away from flammable garden furniture such as wooden or plastic chairs. • Move your barbecue away from sheds, fences, overhanging branches and foliage, and never light it in an enclosed space. • Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Never let children too close to the barbecue. • Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues. • If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder. • When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy. • Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair. To protect you, your family and your home, it is advisable to have working fire alarms in your property and to generally be fire-safety savvy. And it’s not just barbecues that can cause an outdoor hazard: • Ensure all lanterns and candles with a naked flame are fully extinguished when you leave the garden. • Never leave children unattended in, or near, inflatable pools or similar if they contain water. The same applies to garden ponds. Take care also when visiting other people’s gardens - children can drown in less than 3cm of water! • Clear away unused garden hoses and tools – which can be easily tripped over. • And finally, protect and secure your home and garden by securely locking back gates, sheds, garages and windows on balmy evenings. BOOKING OPENS FOR GAIA EARTH VIEWINGS AT PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL Booking has now opened for evening tickets to see Luke Jerram’s Gaia Earth artwork, which will be suspended under the central tower of Peterborough Cathedral from August 19th until September 15th.
CHARITY CYCYLE RIDE The 10th Whittlesey Letter B public house sponsored charity bike saw 50 local riders successfully ride 53 miles around the Cambridgeshire countryside. The event was once again arranged by Bruce Roan, landlord of the Letter B public house, and money raised will go to a local charity. Photo: Frederick Ayley
VISIT YOUR PETERBOROUGH URGENT TREATMENT CENTRE (UTC) Peterborough Urgent Treatment Centre (previously known as the Peterborough Minor Illness and Injury Unit) can treat a range of minor illnesses and injuries such as sprains and strains, minor burns and scalds, minor head and eye injuries, broken bones, cuts and bites. No appointment necessary, the Peterborough UTC is located at the City Care Centre on Thorpe Road and is open from 8am-8pm, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Patients are seen by highly skilled nurse practitioners and GPs who can offer treatment and advice on illnesses and injuries that need attention urgently but are not critical or life threatening. X-Ray services are also available. If you have an urgent medical concern, or unsure which service is right for you, call NHS 111. Open 24/7, trained medical advisors will access your symptoms and direct you to the appropriate service. Depending on the situation, the team can connect you to a nurse, dentist or a GP. The stunning seven metre artwork features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. Lit from the inside, it will be seen to full effect as darkness gradually falls in the cathedral during the 6.30pm to 9.30pm opening times. Gaia rotates once every four minutes, 360 times faster than our real planet, and it is accompanied by a specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning composer Dan Jones. The evening viewings are on selected dates during the exhibition and booking is essential via the cathedral’s ticket site at www.ticketisland. co.uk/peterboroughcathedral. Tickets are £2 per person or £6 per family (two adults, two children). One of the evenings, on Sunday, August 25th is a special ‘quiet evening’, for those who prefer to contemplate the beauty of the earth in silence. Booking is only needed for evening events. It is free to visit the Gaia Earth exhibition during normal daytime visiting hours (donations are invited). These visiting times will usually be from 10am5pm Monday to Saturday, and 12noon-3pm on Sundays. There is restricted access sometimes so please check the website before visiting – www. peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/opening-times. aspx or call 01733 355315.

Local Business
Kellyvision has built up an enviable reputation in Whittlesey and the surrounding area over the past 36 years.
T
he company was formed in 1983 by Mr Kelley Shipp and the independent retailer has evolved the business over the years to meet customers’ changing needs, from televisions, video and audio equipment to all domestic home appliances including built-in as well as free standing.
In November 2017 Kellyvision teamed up with Symphony to offer a range of kitchens and bedrooms to suit all budgets including Milano, Linear and Urbano as well as the exclusive Laura Ashley brand.
A major factor in the success of this expansion is the experience of March-based fitter, Anthony Henson, whose work is well respected. His skills include carpentry, tiling and home improvements in addition to kitchen fitting. Kellyvision’s success over the years has led it to win a number of awards. It was named the Retailer of the Year in the 2017 Fenland Enterprise Business Awards and is a former winner of the prestigious Independent Electrical Retailer (IER) award for Best Small Independent Retailer for Consumer Electronics and Domestic Appliances. The company – based in Broad Street, Whittlesey – has always had a loyal, local customer base, servicing the requirements of generations of the same families and the work of the sales team, Lee Cochrane and Matt Vail, pictured above is well appreciated by its customers.

Reviews on its website include: “Just had a new kitchen fitted from Kellyvision – very fast and friendly service. Every evening our home was cleaned and tidied and the fitters made sure that the electrics and water were only turned off for a minimum amount of time which was important to us. We are very pleased.” Mr R, Whittlesey “Once we saw the design that Lee had worked out for our new kitchen, we did not even bother looking anywhere else as it was exactly what we wanted. A very good experience overall.” Mr B, Eastrea “Buying my new Symphony kitchen from Kellyvision was a good experience – I enjoyed it! Even when I changed my mind several times it was not too much trouble. The experience was not stressful at all and it was great from start to finish.” Miss F, Whittlesey “I would like to say a big thank you to Lee who sold us my washing machine, he talked us all through the programmes and made it sound and look easy – and yes, it is! Also, the delivery man who remained calm even though it did not go easy for him. My heartfelt thanks to your team at Kellyvision.” Mrs D, March

Club Spotlight
Small Club, Big Heart

sn't it great that there is a club in Whittlesey where people with learning difficulties can go to socialise, take part in activities and games, chat and have fun for a couple of hours every week?
Cambridgeshire County Council used to run a club at the Family Centre in Scaldgate but closed it in 2006 because there is no statutory funding for adults with learning difficulties, as if their needs cease at 18! Parents felt that the benefits of the club were so important that they decided to start their own, and after a busy year setting up from scratch, the committee being formed, constitution written, and fundraising etc., The Scalgate Club opened in 2007. Members meet every Thursday evening between 7pm and 9pm at St Andrew’s Hall where members enjoy a wide range of activities. Sometimes arts and crafts, games like curling or skittles, cooking, film nights, and generally socialising and chatting. Occasionally a trip to a local pub is organised. They have a support worker on hand and provide transport back and forth (both of which the club have to pay for). Naturally the activities have to be tailored to suit the members' needs which with conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down’s Syndrome, and others can be considerable, but the team works

with great patience and understanding to ensure everyone has a good time. The club not only benefits the members, who really enjoy themselves, but also their families. They have a couple of hours every week to be able to do other things, even to sit and watch television without the constant responsibility that is their usual lot. It is open to new members and welcomes volunteers to get involved, in the past having had young people on the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme join them. More helping hands would be appreciated. The club has received considerable support from Mencap, past and present town and district councillors, and many local community groups, for which it is very grateful. It is not a registered charity but a constitutional members club so it cannot apply for most grants or sponsorship and has to rely on its own fundraising and donations to be able to continue its valuable work. The club runs bingo sessions, race nights and other fundraising activities, a tombola stall at events such as the Whittlesey Festival, and works hard to do whatever it can to ensure that it can continue. There is a fundraising page at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/scaldgateclub. For more information please contact the secretary, Pam Clifford on 01733 205933.

SUMMER UPDATES AND NEWS... – By Steve Barclay MP Whittlesey sports clubs hosted free taster sessions in football, archery, bowls and table tennis and many other sports. I would like to thank Rob Windle, the sponsors and all those that helped to put on this fantastic community event.
A record year for Read to Succeed Thanks to the huge generosity of our local community we have over £18,000 worth of books to distribute local schools. A record year for Read to Succeed! This year every pupil in Year 4, as well as Year 5, will receive a free book. I would encourage every pupil to use their Golden Pass and take part in the summer reading challenge at local libraries. Thanks once again to all the organisations and individuals who have donated this year to make it our most successful year yet! March High Street to receive essential funding The Government’s £675 million Future High Street Fund is looking at how we get high streets fit for the future, particularly as more consumers shop online. I discussed this with the Minister leading this work Jake Berry MP and am delighted that March has been chosen today as one of the 50 places nationally to receive funding of up to £150,000 to work up their proposals for the next phase. Well done to councillors, officials and everyone involved locally in the successful bid. It is another example of how we are ensuring Fenland is on the map when the Government allocates funding. Doddington Village Sports and Carnival Committee hosted this year’s Doddington Carnival on Saturday, July 6th, 2019. This year’s carnival had an international theme with the procession celebrating countries of the world. The Field of Dreams in Whittlesey could have become a Field of Nightmares for some contestants as the popular 80s and 90s TV show, It’s a Knockout, came to Whittlesey on July 6th!
As Brexit Secretary, I have remained busy with visits at home and abroad. In Brussels on July 9th, I met with EU counterparts to discuss citizens’ rights and alternative arrangements to the Irish backstop. I also had constructive talks with Michel Barnier. I raised the cross-party support for protecting UK and EU citizens’ rights in all scenarios. I set out our ongoing work on alternative arrangements and we agreed to continue dialogue. I paid a visit to cutting edge Yorkshire companies, Abingdon Health and Producmax Ltd to see some great work from the fantastic British aerospace and science industries and it was encouraging to see the strength of UK companies and the opportunities for global exports. I also attended the Great York Show where I had discussions with the NFU who provided farming and agri-food perspectives on Brexit and No Deal, focusing on trade, tariffs and labour. How To Pay Less Tax In Retirement by Eamonn Dorling
This might require planning before the day you ‘hang your keys up’. Many people who are about to retire have pension arrangements that can provide up to 25 percent of the plan value tax free. Drawing the maximum amount of tax-free cash on day one is attractive and might be the right thing to do. Especially if you have an immediate need for a lump sum of money (paying off a mortgage or loan, a large expenditure or a holiday of a lifetime for example). If you take all the tax-free cash straight away – your remaining fund can provide income that will be taxable depending on your circumstances. It might be possible to draw a further lump sum, again taxable depending on circumstances.
If a tax free lump sum is required later and there is still enough tax free value in the plan, provided it has been maintained in a flexible arrangement it may be possible to draw on that and reduce your reliance on taxable income, not all arrangements do this automatically which is why professional advice is valuable.
If a large lump sum is taken but not required for anything in particular, it might end up in a bank or building society account earning very little interest; it was tax free but might end up being virtually interest free as well!
This relies on there being tax free cash within the pension arrangement to draw on, a plan that supports flexible drawdown plus a complete understanding of your tax situation and requirements.
Under these situations, it might have been better leaving all or some of the tax-free cash in the pension to be taken when it could do more good. Typically, this might be when there is enough income coming in from other pensions, an ongoing salary, investment returns or rental income for example.
To explore the possibilities of paying less tax in retirement, contact an independent financial adviser for a free initial consultation.
Suppose a requirement for extra income is required (maybe an alternative source of funding dries up). It is possible to draw down an income comprising 25% tax free and 75% taxable. If you remain a basic rate taxpayer based on other income, the new income may be effectively taxed at 15% rather than 20%.

Pets’ Corner
Pet Insurance
by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre
Sometimes it can be difficult to decide whether to insure your pet or not. Yes, they may go through life with no illnesses or injuries and you never need to use your insurance or you may decide to not insure your pet and then find yourself having to pay lots of veterinary bills. Unfortunately, we can’t know what is around the corner. Ask yourself can you afford a small monthly fee towards insurance cover and/or would you be able to afford £2000+ if the unfortunate occurred and you have no cover? Unlike for ourselves there is no NHS for our pets and their treatment will be limited by the funds owners have available. Pet insurance gives you peace of mind and makes it more likely that you can do everything possible for your pet, but with the vast choice of insurance companies out there, how will you know which to choose? The cost of insurance can be affected by the breed of your pet, how old they are etc. As they get older, the risk of illness increases and so will the cost of insurance. It can also be more difficult to insure an older pet. The different types of insurance available: Accident only Your pet will be covered for accidental injury only. They will not be covered for ongoing illness. Time limited A time limited policy works in two ways. When claiming for a condition you are covered for either 12 months or until you reach your limit on the veterinary fees, whichever comes first is when your cover finishes. Maximum benefit You have a maximum sum of money per condition i.e. £7500, once this has been used, the condition is 60
D I S C O V E R I N G
Whittlesea
no longer covered by your insurance. The amount could last for your pet’s lifetime, but also could be used up in the first one-two years depending on the condition. Lifetime A lifetime policy means exactly that, as long as you renew your policy with the same provider each year. The amount of veterinary fees will renew each year back to the full amount. Most policies will require you to cover your excess per condition each year. Each company will have their own specifications and it is important to know exactly what you are being covered for and to check the small print for any exclusions or conditions that may affect you not being able to make a claim. All insurances have a 14-day period at the beginning of the policy in which if your pet becomes ill, they will not be covered. We would advise a lifetime policy for any pet and that you choose a good policy from the beginning. It is not recommended that you shop around each year at your renewal date for a ‘cheaper’ policy, as any pre-existing problems, whether you have claimed for these or not, will not be covered by the company you move to. We are happy to discuss insurance with you here at the practice to help you understand if you are choosing the right insurance for your pet.

String Them Up? By Dave Bailey
H
This Month: Time For a Change
alfway through the festival season and the tone from your guitar is starting to sound a bit dull? We all know a player who jokes, “I change my strings every year whether they need it or not, but in some cases for a few players this is true.
The sound transmitted from a plucked string is determined by the tension to produce the note at the correct frequency coupled with the manufactured process and materials used. Most stringed instruments use a bridge at the bottom end to transfer the vibrations into the body of the instrument and on solid guitars often incorporate an adjustment device to change both the height and intonation (minor adjustments to correct scale length). On electro acoustic guitars the bridge often is pre-set into a saddle which holds a piezo pick-up. Solid guitars and some electro acoustics use a series of pole coils placed in a row under the strings to pick up the changes in magnetic flux caused by the vibrating string. At the neck end the strings pass through a top nut designed to hold the strings parallel and then wound around a gear driven peg where the tension is applied.
64
D I S C O V E R I N G
Whittlesea
The reality behind a clean tone is the simple act of vibration; however, residue build-up and fatigue caused by plucking can cause the sound to be affected. The construction of the four lower strings on steel and even nylon strung instruments relies on a centre single length of hexagonal wire or round nylon which has a fine wrapping of phosphor bronze for steel strings or silver-plated copper for nylon. Jazz strings can also be tape wound with a flat chrome or nickel taped to achieve a more mellow tone. Usually the top two strings are unwrapped single steel or nylon wires. The process of playing the instrument relies on finger pressure along the neck to shorten the plucked string to change the note which can leave deposits of skin cells and oil on and between the windings. Over time this can reduce the ring from the vibrating string in a similar way that palm muting at the bridge end of the instrument does. There are a number of string cleaning solutions and wipes available to occasionally remove film and grime, but a complete change of strings is always the best option once the sound becomes dull. hittlesey Junior Football Club was established twenty years ago to provide junior football to the youth of Whittlesey and surrounding areas.
Since 1999 the club – a member of Whittlesey Sports Association – has grown significantly and has an active committee that continues to develop it for the benefit of the members. The club enters teams into the Huntingdonshire FA Youth League, Peterborough Junior Alliance League and the Peterborough and District Youth Soccer League with training taking place during weekday evenings and on Saturday mornings. An FA Charter Standard Development Club affiliated to Cambridgeshire FA, it aims to provide all the boys and girls within Whittlesey Junior Football Club the maximum opportunities

to develop their football, personal, social, educational and sporting skills to their full potential with the children’s welfare and enjoyment a priority in all decisions made. This is achieved by providing dedicated, screened, trained and qualified coaching staff within a caring, safe and fun environment for learning and development. The club has just been awarded status as an SSE Wildcats football centre which offers girls aged 5-11 a chance to try football for the first time and be coached by qualified FA coaches and be given regular opportunities for them to play. Sessions start on Monday, August 12th from 6.30pm-7.30pm with the first few being free. Whittlesey Junior Football Club also runs a 200 club which raises money for further investment to improve the facilities for the children to play and enjoy their football. It costs £5 a month and there are four monthly cash prizes. For further information, please telephone 07762 538860 or email wjfcinfo@gmail.com

St Andrew’s Summer Fete St Andrew’s Summer Fete returns with a musical theme this year along with the traditional side stalls, games for the children, tombola and the infamous cakes and refreshments stalls. Complete with an outside bar and a line-up of local and well-known performers and dancers it is guaranteed to be fun for all the family. The Highland Band with its Scottish dancers has been a regular feature at the fete over the years and there will be also music from singer Dale Diamond, barber shop harmonies from Hereward Harmony, singer-songwriter Sophie Frear, the unique Trevor Dixon, guitarist and the ‘Dylanesque’ talent of Shaun, the mesmerising vocal skills of Harriett and local duo The Boatmen. The church hall has been the focal point for many of the town’s organisations and clubs with regular activities to suit all tastes. The refurbished

floor and facilities has resulted in it becoming a popular venue for adult and children’s parties and wedding receptions, with its access to the large grassed area with marquees to provide cover for our changeable weather. This year the organisers are delighted to report that raffle prizes have been donated by sponsors including D&L Landscaping, Malcolm James and Vesuvio. Entry is free but there will be a bucket for donations at the gate.

Technology
Stopping The Scammers: Part 2
I
In last month's article I was telling you about my experience with a tech support scammer. This month, I will continue with a little more information.
ended the last article by saying that tech support from big name companies like Microsoft, BT, Apple etc will never ask for remote access to your computer so PLEASE REMEMBER THAT GOLDEN RULE AND DENY ANY SUCH REQUESTS. I was on the phone talking to this set of scammers for around forty-five minutes (a lot of time wasted for them where they could have scammed someone else and got money) and during this time they spoke to me about online banking and if I did it on this computer. I said that I did because that is a golden question for scammers like this as they can then say things like hackers will have access to your banks and they can be drained, this will scare most people and so then they will listen to them and go through with the scam and get their account drained. This is one of their scare tactics. If any ‘tech support agent’ asks you if you do online banking etc over the phone it’s most likely a scam. Scammers ruin lives, steal and cause massive amounts of distress. Therefore, I am currently getting together a group of like-minded individuals who in their spare time will call up scammers and waste as much of their time as possible and dedicate the resources of the scammers to something that isn’t going to destroy someone’s day. This team will not only do all the dirty work of calling the scam centres but also will develop new technology to prevent scam calls reaching your phone in the first place. Sadly, as the world grows and with advances in technical knowledge, we are finding It all the more common to see people getting caught in the teeth of these scams. So far in nearly a month I have seen more than 150 people scammed with the minimum amount taken being £500. I have only spoken about one of the many ways people will use to scam you, there are hundreds
of ways how malicious people can scam the innocent for example; email (the Nigerian prince is a good example), pop-ups, viruses, Trojans and many more. The internet isn’t a safe place for anyone nowadays but for a limited time you can come into AA Whittlesey Computers and get all your security essentials, including a lifetime antivirus, advanced online surfing protection and stateof-the-art computer clean-up tools for only £40. Giving you the confidence to surf the web safely! Please remember to use caution when speaking to anyone on the phone about your computer services and look for the red flags that I listed in the previous article and remember companies like BT, Microsoft, Virgin, Sky etc WILL NEVER call you for ANY computer problems. As a final note we have seen a massive influx of people who would like VHS tapes copied to DVDs. In response to this we are now offering the VHS to DVD copying service for only £19.99! Come into the shop if you would like more details. Thank you for reading and happy computing… Deborah, Len and Oliver

Phil’s Ride
Community Spirit on Two Wheels! – by Holly-Jean
P
hilip Beeton, aged fifty from Southery, was a fiancé, a father, a brother, a son and an all-round family man. In 2015 he was killed in a road traffic collision by a twenty-tonne tipper lorry while on his way home from an average day at work. He is remembered and loved by many.
In his memory there is an annual charity event called ‘Phil’s Ride’ held in Southery, Norfolk. It was set up back in 2016 by his fiancee, Jane, and really good friend David Fletcher. The idea was that people would show up on motorcycles for a one hundredmile long trip or bicycles to participate in a twentyfour-mile round trip. This was to celebrate his life and raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance which attended to Phil on the day of the crash, and saved the life of his nephew, who was also in the accident. Riding two wheels was close to Phil’s heart as he and his fiancee used to ride together. On the motorbike route there is one stop, Blakeney. This is a place where Jane and Phil used to visit regularly. Every penny raised on the day goes straight to the East Anglian Air Ambulance. For the first year in 2016 they didn’t expect many people to turn up. There was no ‘sign up’ and no sponsorship forms to fill out and so, they had to wait and see how many showed up on the day. They were astonished by the turnout from such a small village and £6278 was raised in just one day in memory of Phil. The ride starts outside the ‘Olde White Bell’ pub in Southery which was Phil’s local pub. Jane says that there is a ‘sense of family’ at ‘the Bell’.

Shocked by how much money they initially raised, the event was scheduled again for 2017 and the target was to raise just 1p over the previous amount. The turnout was even bigger and the emotion that Phil’s family and friends felt as they saw all of the people show up to support the EAAA and remember Phil was overwhelming. This event shows off such a beautiful sense of community, camaraderie and family. Everyone got goose bumps and clapped as the bikers departed and when they came back, the music started, the raffle was called, and pride was felt by all. On this day in 2017, £12,155.22 was raised through buckets and sponsorships. I was lucky enough to be a part of this event and I couldn’t be happier to support such an amazing cause. Last year’s ride then smashed this amount out of the park when more than £16,000 was raised for the amazing team. In total, this event has raised more than £35,000 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. This year will be the fourth year of Phil’s Ride and the target amount is again just 1p over 2018’s money raised but I think you’ll agree it deserves more. You never know when you might need the Air Ambulance, so please get on your bike and get involved! Phil's Ride 2019 will be on Sunday, August 25th and is open to anyone on two wheels who would like to take part. The team, comprising family and friends of Phil, are hoping to repeat the success of the years before and also encourage children to take part in their own course, mapped out on Southery playing field.
