Introduction

Welcome to Your October Issue. Where has the year gone? It seems just yesterday that I wrote about the schools breaking up for summer and families planning their annual holidays. Now students have returned to school and college and we have started the run-up to the end of 2019 as we get set for Hallowe’en, Bonfire Night and then – I really can’t believe this – Christmas and New Year. I really enjoy this time of year. It’s great watching the landscape slowly change colour and evenings out seem to have a better atmosphere as the nights draw in. Plus, at home there’s invariably a better selection of programmes to watch on TV. But the prospect of the cold, wet, winter months on the horizon isn’t something I’m looking forward to as it doesn’t seem that long since we said goodbye to last winter. Still onwards and upwards, I shall do my best to enjoy the last few sunny days before I pack the shorts and T-shirts away for another year and dig out my winter clothes. Where did I put that hat and gloves...?

Welcome to October’s issue. Don’t forget that “Stoptober” is now upon us, a movement that has already driven over one million ‘quit attempts’ to date and is the biggest mass quit attempt in the country. It is based on research that shows that if you can stop smoking for twenty-eight days, you are five times more likely to stay smoke-free for good. Why not have a go this year? For useful information, including tips and advice to stop smoking, search ‘Stoptober’, or visit www.healthypeterborough.co.uk With the money you’ve saved then treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember – less than a hundred days from now! But before then, don’t forget to stock up for when those “Trick or Treaters” pay you a visit on Hallowe’en. Finally, don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we lose the hour on Sunday October 27th.

Whittlesey Dental Care

How does a Dental Implant work? A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium to which a fabricated crown, bridge or denture is attached. When a missing tooth is replaced with an implant the bone actually grows around the implant (osseointegration) making a strong foundation for a restoration. This way a replacement tooth can function like a real tooth making it easier to eat, talk and smile with confidence.

Implant procedure Before the treatment begins adequate anaesthetic is given to make the procedure comfortable for you. The bone is then drilled to accept the implant, the implant is then placed in the bone and a healing cap is then attached. After this phase of the procedure the bone is then fused to the implant. Once the implant is integrated with bone the healing cap is then replaced with abutment which sits above the gum line. Whether you are getting an implant to replace a single tooth or

multiple implants for a bridge or to support a denture, dental implants have a natural feel and function offering you a long term solution for missing teeth.

Implant Supported Denture Having loose dentures can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. An implant supported denture ensures the denture is stabilised. An implant is an artificial root made of titanium that fuses to the bone enabling the denture to be held in place.

Types of Implant Supported Dentures Removable: can be removed for cleaning and are available in different styles – bar retained or ball retained, or locator retained. Fixed: screw fixed dentures – only removed by a dentist. For more information please ring the surgery to arrange a free consultation with Dr. Gali.

Preventing Gum Disease Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy mouth. Unfortunately, most adults have some form of gum disease (periodontitis), but it often goes undetected for many years. This causes irreversible gum and bone damage, eventually resulting in the loss of teeth. However, a dental hygienist is qualified to treat such gum disease and here are: Six key benefits in seeing your hygienist or dentist regularly. Preventing Progressive Gum and Bone Loss. Periodontitis may manifest as bleeding gums, bad breath and loose teeth, but it may also be hidden. Fortunately, gum disease can be stopped and even reversed if caught in the early stages. Your hygienist will treat active disease, plus provide a tailored brushing regimen. Cleaning those ‘Hard to Reach’ Spots. Even people with excellent oral hygiene benefit from a hygienist’s help to find hidden plaque and calculus (tartar). Preventing Bad Breath. Halitosis odours are released by bacteria living under the gum edges. Dental scaling can effectively remove this harmful material.

Creating a Whiter Smile. Some external stains on your teeth are due to tea, coffee, tobacco, red wine and other dietary factors, and can’t be removed by brushing alone. However, hygienist polishing can restore your teeth to their natural whiteness. Preventing Systemic Diseases. Poor dental hygiene is scientifically linked to the progression of heart and respiratory diseases and diabetes. To Prevent Oral Cancer. Your hygienist is trained to screen your mouth for early signs of oral cancer, and to provide advice on risk factors for oral cancer, such as smoking and alcohol. The Priestgate Clinic have just celebrated their first anniversary and are delighted to still be welcoming new patients for general dentistry, orthodontics and minor oral surgery. To book an appointment with Priestgate Dental Clinic’s highly experienced hygienist, then please contact ring 01733865000 or e-mail reception@priestgateclinic.co.uk.

Dentistry with a difference It’s a year since the Priestgate Dental Clinic opened, and we’re delighted by the fantastically positive responses we’ve received.

Often mistakenly confused with care homes, retirement living schemes have notable differences. For example, there is a modern, aspirational feel to retirement living. From reception rooms, restaurants, bistros, libraries and lounges, you really get the reflection of a modern hotel which makes it a great place to meet up with neighbours or family to grab a bite to eat or simply relax with a coffee and a book. Unlike care homes, you live independently in your own space. Whether you rent, buy or opt for shared ownership, you have that freedom and comfort to know you have control of your own lifestyle, just with the option of additional care. The best schemes even offer 24-hour on-site care and offer emergency call systems to give residents and their families peace of mind. The shape of retirement in the future? It is clear to see the attraction of this new form of community living. From resident-run activities to emergency care and wellbeing packages, retirement living offers multiple ways to socialise. It revolutionises the common perception of retirement and how we will live in the future, which underlies the continual growth in this market sector.

The Benefits of Therapeutic Massage We are pleased to have a wonderful team of massage therapists, Deborah, Phil, and Tracy, who can offer a professional treatment to everyone. Massage can be defined as the systematic and manual manipulation of the body’s soft tissue for therapeutic purposes, promoting health and well-being. Regular treatment is the perfect way to balance the demands of a busy life. The benefits of massage include improved circulation to the massaged area and stimulated muscles. This can help to improve flexibility and mobility; it can dramatically reduce stress and ease tension. Massage can help to reduce headaches/ migraines, cramps and spasms, and massage is also said to improve the immune system. Aromatherapy massage uses organic essential oils; it can have both physiological and psychological effects. The combination of massage and the medicinal and therapeutic qualities of the essential oils that are inhaled and absorbed through the skin can soothe, revitalise, uplift the spirit, encourage positive thinking, and boost the immune system, enabling the body to heal itself. Swedish massage blends various techniques, to address the specific needs of the client. The manipulation of the body’s soft tissue (the skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and facia) using the hands, is a gentle, flowing massage technique that uses varying degrees of pressure and stretching movements. It is commonly used for relaxation and improving well-being. Like Aromatherapy massage, it's great for stress relief. Sports massage therapy is used to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion

and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively. It can help prevent niggling injuries that get in the way of performance and achievement, whether you are an athlete or a once-a-week jogger. This treatment is not just for the sportsperson: anyone can benefit from sports massage, including people in physically demanding jobs, and those not quite so obvious causes, such as occupational, emotional, and postural stress, which may produce many similar characteristics to sports injuries. Pregnancy massage is available after the first trimester; it can help to reduce anxiety, back and leg pain, improve sleep, and decrease the levels of the stress hormones. Regular massage sessions throughout pregnancy are a great way to relieve these problematic physical symptoms of pregnancy. It works to support your vitality and overall health. Everyone Health – Delivering NHS Health Checks in Your Community What is an NHS Health Check?

T

he NHS Health Check is a national programme offering a health check-up every five years to adults in England aged 40 to 74 without a pre-existing cardiovascular condition. One of the largest prevention programmes of its type in the world, it is designed to help prevent and detect early signs of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes and dementia. As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing one of these conditions. An NHS Health Check helps find ways to lower the risk. If you are in the 40-74 age group without a preexisting condition, you should have an NHS Health Check every five years.

confirmed and it was agreed he would return after three months to see if the changes in lifestyle he was implementing would improve his results enough to avoid medication. Andy returned after three months to find his GP happy as he confirmed his cholesterol had reduced to a healthier level and he had lost 9.1kg, meaning he would not need medication – just to continue with what he was doing! Andy said: “Everyone Health provided a very beneficial and good service, a worthwhile visit that has turned things around for me.” How can you get involved? You can make an appointment for your NHS Health Check by: Tel: 03330 050093 Email: eh.changepointcambs@nhs.net www.everyonehealth.co.uk/cambs

Everyone Health delivers these important checks in local community clinics across Cambridgeshire, you will find us in libraries, community centres, at local events, church halls, pop-up shops in town centres – we also deliver in workplaces. The check takes about 20-30 minutes. You will meet with a trained professional who will check your blood pressure and cholesterol, they will record your height, weight, age, gender and ethnicity. You’ll also be asked some simple questions about your family history and choices that may put your health at risk. Once you’ve had your NHS Health Check, your results will be discussed with you and you’ll be given personalised advice on how to maintain or improve your health which will help you lower your risk of developing any of the conditions screened for. Andy H, who had an NHS Health Check at our Pop-up Shop in Huntingdon earlier this year, was informed his cholesterol was high and would need to visit his GP for discussion and medical advice about how this could affect him. Andy also took advice away with him from the Everyone Health practitioner about changes he could implement in the meantime to improve his health & lifestyle. At the GP appointment after a further blood test Andy’s results from the NHS Health Check were 12

• Cut the pumpkin flesh into small wedges (discarding any seeds) and add them to a large pot of water. Dice the two onions and add to the pumpkin and water and cook until tender and soft. • Whilst the pumpkin is cooking, saute the garlic along with the bacon pieces. Set aside once browned. • When the pumpkin and onion are cooked, drain and mash or use a food processor. Add salt and pepper to taste and then the curry powder. Mix well. Slowly pour in the cream. Once mixed, add the bacon pieces. The consistency of the soup should be nice and thick. • Tuck in with some crusty bread on the side!

esearch for the ‘Campaign to End Loneliness’ has reported that social isolation is a growing trend and nearly half of people aged 75 or over are now living alone. Not surprisingly, loneliness can have a negative impact on their health and emotional well-being.

To help lessen this problem, over the last 12 months Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough has been creating new Friendship Clubs for the over 60s in and around Cambridgeshire. The Whittlesey Friendship Club is just one such club and has been up-and-running since May 2019. The Club is now actively seeking new members to come along and join in with its success. Meeting every Thursday at the Ivy Leaf Club, the 20 plus regular members meet, make new friends and enjoy each other’s company in a safe and friendly environment. The Club, run by volunteers, also offers members a wide range of challenging and fun activities for members. Members have enjoyed a lunchtime cabaret, keep-fit classes, arts and crafts and quizzes. Studies have shown that it benefits your wellbeing when you to share a meal and have a conversation with someone. The Friendship Club recognises this and works with the Ivy Leaf Club to provide a two-course lunch which gives members the opportunity to eat together. Of course, none of this would be possible without the help of the regular volunteers who, by giving a

few hours of their valuable time each week have together ensured that the Club has and will continue to prosper. Thinking of volunteering? Remember volunteering is not without its own rewards, as we all know: ‘Doing Good Does You Good’. During the next few months Club members can look forward to participating in some new activities that include; visits from the Fire Service, a local historian and Age UK advisors, as well as regular favourites, such as art & crafts, skittles and keep-fit. In addition, a daytrip is being planned to visit and have lunch at a local garden centre. If you would like to attend the Whittlesey Friendship Club, it meets at the Ivy Leaf Club on Gracious Street on a Thursday at 10.30am until 1pm. Please call Stewart at Age UK on 01733 352213 or email friendshipclub@ageukcap.org.uk for more information. Entry costs just £5 and includes lunch, teas and coffee – activities may cost extra.

Can I Avoid Paying Care Home Fees? BY JENNY NOLAN, SOLICITOR

The UK population is ageing, and more people than ever will spend their later years in a care home. It is now more important than ever to seriously think about later life care and how much this could cost you. Care home fees vary depending on your needs but will still be a significant expense. In East Anglia, average care home fees are £35,000 per year and can exceed £42,000 for more specialised care. Your local council will fund your care if your total assets are below £14,250 and you will be expected to fund your own care if your assets exceed £23,250. If your assets fall between the upper and lower limits, your local authority will pay part of your care fees. When your assets are calculated, your income, savings and home will be included. According to these rules, everyone who owns their own home will exceed the upper limit and be expected to fund their own care. The council won’t sell your home, but homeowners who don’t have enough savings to pay their care home fees may need to sell their house to fund their care. This is a bitter pill for those who were hoping to pass their home on to their children or chosen beneficiaries, perhaps to help them to get on to the property ladder. In certain circumstances, your home won’t be included in the assessment of your assets. Your home could be disregarded if you are in the first 12 weeks of permanent residential care or if you have a partner, carer or vulnerable relative who still lives in the property. However, unless these or a few other circumstances apply to you, expect your home to be included. You may therefore think that it is a good idea to dispose of your property before you need residential

care, but you should be careful. If the local authority thinks that you have deliberately reduced your assets to avoid paying care home fees (called ‘deliberate deprivation’), they could calculate your fees as if you still owned the assets. If you have given the asset to another person, the local authority could try to recover their costs from them. It is possible and perfectly legitimate to dispose of your assets without breaching guidelines set by the local authority, for example, by setting up a trust, giving gifts or buying an investment bond. However, the local authority can scrutinise any arrangement they believe is an attempt to avoid care home fees and they can revisit and review your case if they feel that circumstances have changed. When it comes to care home fees, there is no such thing as ‘off the shelf advice’ and there are no guaranteed ways of avoiding fees. Everyone’s situation is different and by seeking advice from a qualified legal professional you can best protect your assets for your loved ones and minimise your chances of making a decision that could be considered deliberate deprivation of assets.

church and marquee on the Green and many activities and rides for the children. Fun and laughter were in abundance as Jezo entertained the children and they enjoyed puppet shows and free face painting and balloons at the Whittlesey Christian Church marquee. WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL: THE BEST EVER! Feedback from visitors, stall holders, performers and organisers have confirmed that this year’s Whittlesey Festival was the best yet. The backdrop of sunny blue skies was a bonus as the festival, now in its twelfth year, started off with a parade before the official opening by the Mayor of Whittlesey Cllr Julie Windle. Organisers would like to thank everyone who took part in the event and the thousands of people who came for their support including the sponsors whose generosity enabled many of the rides to be free or subsidised on the day. There was something for everyone, with an impressive 120 vintage vehicles including motorbikes, cycles and Hot Rods, plentiful stalls with music and entertainment on the Market Square,

24

The organisers said the crowds were wowed by an astounding line-up of dance acts including the Ukrainian Cossacks ‘Orlyk’ who amazed everyone with their high kicks and energetic routines. Other dance groups performing on the day included the Rug-Cutters Lindy Hop dancers, The Solas School of Irish Dance, the Whittlesey Christian Church Dancers, Starlight Twirlettes Majorette troupe together with a fitness display from Andy Harding and his group. The Festival Schools Art Exhibition was held at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street with some incredible work on display from local schools including Park Lane, Alderman Jacobs, New Road, Coates and Sir Harry Smith Community College (SHSCC). Prizes and trophies were awarded on the day by the Mayor of Whittlesey. Once again, the organisers have given a huge thank you to everyone and look forward to seeing everyone at next year's festival on Sunday, September 13th, 2020. CONGRATULATIONS WHITTLESEY!

We are pleased to let you know that the next meeting of the Business Forum will be on Wednesday, October 30th at The Falcon Hotel, Whittlesey, 6pm for 6.30pm start. Guest speaker to be announced. See you on the 30th. Chair Joe Jennings

COUNCILLOR SURGERIES WILL BE HELD AT PEEL HOUSE IN QUEEN STREET FROM 9.30AM TO 10.30AM ON THE FIRST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH THROUGHOUT 2019. Councillors present on Saturday, October 5th will be: Councillor Kay Mayor (District & Town Councillor) Councillor Julie Windle (Town Councillor) If you have any matters of concern and wish to discuss them with a Councillor, then please come along and let us know.

A big thank you to everyone that filled in the Whittlesey & District Business Forum survey that was included in the September issue of the magazine. There was a fantastic response that enabled much useful information to be gathered about matters regarding the town, so much so that Fenland District Council is very interested to see the results. It’s not possible to list all the points that were raised, but the vast majority of questionnaires were very positive about the town, with most of the ‘Agree’ boxes being ticked. The survey received more than the national average of returns, there were 98.5 percent total positives about our town. ‘What is great about Whittlesey?’ The majority of comments were as follows: ‘The people’, ‘Very friendly’, ‘Community spirit’, ‘Local events’, ‘Welcoming’, ‘Relaxed atmosphere’, ‘Leisure facilities’, and ‘Local pubs and restaurants’. ‘What improvements would you like to see in Whittlesey?’ A selection of comments are as follows: ‘A larger/mainstream supermarket’, ‘Completion of a bridge at Kings Dyke’, ‘Later bus service’, ‘Larger variety of shops’, ‘Greater Police presence’, ’More frequent train service’, ‘More activities for the young’, ‘Free public toilets’, ‘Larger Doctors surgery’ and ‘Better maintained roads’. ‘What are your views on parking in Whittlesey?’ Generally, the consensus was very positive and welcomed the fact that parking was free and would like this to continue for local shopping and to encourage visitors from out of town to boost the local economy, however some suggested a maximum parking period of two, three or four hour periods. Some mentioned that they would be happy to pay for parking and it was also suggested that some shop owners as they are in the town earlier than most could utilise the free main car parks, freeing up easier access to their own premises for the public, their hopeful clients. A complete list of draw winners will be announced in next month’s issue.

Matters WHITTLESEY STREET PRIDE CELEBRATES MILESTONE

A celebration of ten years of Whittlesey Street Pride has been marked with a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Beet Cutter project on the corner of Grosvenor Road, Whittlesey. The beet cutter was donated by Michael Weston, a long-term member of Street Pride, and restored and installed on the corner of Grosvenor Road on a raised flower bed in 2018. The project is being financed by the Tesco Bags of Help grant scheme, with the money raised from the sale of carrier bags being used to fund thousands of local projects in communities throughout the UK. Whittlesey Street Pride achieved the top award from three community projects in and around Peterborough in December 2017 and January 2018. The group would like to thank Katie Rickett and Laura from Tesco’s Hampton with Katie doing the honours cutting the ribbon, the Mayor of Whittlesey Julie Windle for attending and Lisa Hobbs for the catering.

BOOST FOR WHITTLESEY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS FUND A big thank you has gone out to everyone who gave to the collection by Whittlesey Christmas Lights Committee during the Music on the Square event in August with £378.18p being raised and twenty pens being sold for £1 each. The organisers have given special thanks to the anonymous lady and gentleman that took the bucket and collected at the end of the event – who were amazing! If anyone is interested in joining the committee, please contact Richard Exton on 07836 or Janet Clark on 01733 208669.

Last month fourteen Street Pride volunteers were busy at the Whittlesey Festival, collecting twelve bags of rubbish from around the festival throughout the day. A prize draw raised £135 with Councillor David Mason picking out the number 911 winning ticket. Anyone interested in joining the group should contact Fred Mills Chairman on 01733 202874.

Congratulations! to the winners of our Seaside Hunt:

Emily, Polly & Rosie

Emily (14), Polly (8), and Rosie (15) took part in our summer treasure hunt with their grandparents. They are looking forward to sharing the prize money to buy clothes and treating their family to a coffee!

Consumer Advice

Misery and Mayhem Being Caused by a New Wave of Scams by Eileen Le Voi - Safe Local Trades This has been the summer of scams, in the form of postal, telephone and on-line fraud attempts – targeting everyone from holidaymakers to online daters. One of the latest and perhaps not so well-known scams is again targeting consumers, this time via automated phone calls pretending to be from their bank or credit card company. Victims have received an automated phone call claiming to be from their bank or card provider, saying there has been a suspicious transaction on their account. They were then asked to verify the transaction by pressing a number on their phone to take them through to an “agent” – who is actually a fraudster. Banking and finance trade association, UK Finance is reminding consumers of five warning signs to look out for during a phone call, which suggest that the caller could be a scammer: • The caller is insistent and doesn’t give you time to think or tries to stop you speaking to a family member or friend. • The caller asks you to transfer money to a different account. • The caller asks for your online banking passwords or four-digit card PIN. • The caller asks you to withdraw money and hand it over for “safekeeping”. • The caller offers to send a courier to your home to collect cash, PINs, cards or cheque books to “protect” you from fraud. It is always worth remembering that your bank, card provider or the police will NEVER contact you asking for personal information or requesting you to transfer money to another account. If you feel uncomfortable or suspicious during a call, hang up and call your bank or card provider directly on its official phone number. And it doesn’t end there… Tax tricksters claiming to be from HMRC are also making misery for those running their own business through phishing scams. This is where an email purporting to be from HM Revenue & Customs can cause the recipient to become unnerved by content requesting money allegedly owed to the ‘tax man’. Scam e-mails of this sort not only look official but can often look like they’ve been sent from official government email addresses, making them harder to spot. Finance

Four Important Investment Sectors by Eamonn Dorling

Most investment funds designed for medium to long term investment timelines combine the following: Cash – To provide liquidity without selling down other investments, to pay charges and a ‘haven’ if other sectors are having a hard time. Fixed Interest – typically loans to Government(s) and/or corporations that, in return, pay interest back to the investor. Usually a better return than cash but bears a degree of risk depending on the financial strength of the borrower. Property – Probably not domestic houses, but more likely an office block, shopping centre or car park (for example). Here the risk of falling property values and a lack of utilisation should be balanced against long term increases in property values and income from users of the property. The returns can exceed fixed interest and on occasions fall short. Equities – Stocks and shares that may be concentrated in one geographical area (e.g. the UK) or may be widely invested across the world, this aspect of investment is not unique to equities but is very recognisable and reasonably easy to achieve. Then there is another aspect to consider – the underlying asset classes, for example manufacturing, financial services, infrastructure, retail and agriculture as examples. This category of investment carries greater risk and potentially greater returns over the medium to long term. An investment portfolio might have 8% in cash, 35% in fixed interest, 12% in property and 45% in equities. A portfolio with a higher equity content might be viewed as more adventurous and one with more fixed interest might be more cautious.

Then the trick is to correctly blend these four sectors to reflect your expectations and objectives which is where an independent financial adviser can set up the initial portfolio and help monitor and advise when circumstances change. When the most appropriate portfolio is agreed, the next thing is to make it as tax efficient as possible and suitable for the purpose. To explore the possibilities of building a sound investment strategy for you/your family, contact an independent financial adviser for a free initial consultation. Pets’ Corner

Firework Season: Get Ready! by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

It will soon be that time of the year where some of our pets get anxious or fearful, because of fireworks. If your pet gets worried about fireworks, there are things you can do to help them. Two to three weeks before the firework season starts: • Prepare a special area away from any windows for your pet to go to during firework events. They may already have a place they like to go to when feeling distressed. If so and it is feasible use this area. Place lots of blankets in there for your pet to burrow and hide in, helping them to feel more comfortable in there. Feed them their dinner and give them chews in there during the few weeks before fireworks begin. NEVER use it as a punishment, it’s meant to be a safe place for them. On the night of fireworks: • Feed your pet before the fireworks begin in case they become uncomfortable and don’t want to eat. • Exercise/walk your dog before any fireworks are likely to start. • Play moderately loud rhythmic music or have the TV on to help to mask the noise of the fireworks. • Give your pet an item of clothing that has your scent on to help them settle. • Close all windows to keep out as much noise as possible. • Close curtains early to keep out flashing lights. If your curtains are thin, hang a sheet over the top, so the flashing lights cannot be seen from the inside. • Act normally to avoid communicating to your pet there is something to be concerned about. • Avoid taking your dog out when fireworks are occurring, even if they are OK. It only takes one episode of a fear response being triggered to create future problems. If you do need to be out and about, keep your dog on a lead at all times. • The number of lost pets found, increases during the firework season. Make sure your details are correct on their collar identification tag and microchip and that all gates, fences, cat flaps, doors etc. are secure and escape proof. • Play a favourite game or do a favourite activity to keep them happy and prevent them becoming anxious or settle them down in their special place before the fireworks begin. 56

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

• Give your pet some tasty chews or a stuffed kong. Chewing helps to relieve anxiety, however, don’t be worried if they are not interested, this will depend on how anxious your pet is feeling. • NEVER get cross with your pet, this can make them worse. If they are already anxious or very fearful, any form of frustration, anger or punishment from you will only add to their anxiety or fear, leading to further problems. • Despite warnings you may hear, you can comfort them during fireworks, with a massage or long gentle strokes, to reduce their anxiety, but do make sure you remain neutral with no signs of anxiety in your voice or body. Comfort does not increase their fear! • Ignore all the noises yourself; act happy and relaxed as if nothing is happening. • Never force them to experience the fireworks in the hope they will get used to them, this will only make them worse. Imagine how you would feel if someone was forcing you to experience your worst phobia! • Remember to breathe calmly; breathing in a relaxed steady way can help your pet relax. • And finally, NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET HOME ALONE! If your pet is already quite scared of fireworks, there are things you can do to help them overcome their fear, but you need to start working with them now, teaching them that fireworks are part of everyday life and brings no harm or danger to them. Please contact us to arrange for one of our nurses to help you put a plan together and teach them to not just cope with fireworks but to find them ‘fun’. There are natural remedies and prescription medication available that can help them cope if started well before the firework season starts. Again, for more information on products available, please contact us at the surgery. OCT OBE R 2 0 1 9

First Timers?

L

This Month: Time to Take Stock... By Dave Bailey

ike an emerging butterfly, with courage summoned and a dash of nerves, your first performance has been completed. There were hopefully no tantrums or signs of audience unrest, so what’s next? Any musician, actor, athlete or public figure will always have doubts about how they performed. It’s only natural to want to please your audience and perform to the best of your abilities, but how do you feel it went?

It is always better to expect that there will be some issues whether technical or performance related. The odd stray note, music track that failed to play, string breakage, cable failure… the list is endless. For first time performances in front of people, a friend or family member as a knowledgeable performance buddy to provide feedback on how it went is always helpful, though they can sometimes be biased. They can hopefully pick out the best parts and areas for improvement. The effect that nerves can have on how you perform is a natural phenomenon that even the most seasoned artists can be affected by. The key is how you react to criticism and praise and how that affects your next venture in front of a crowd. The performing arts have always been considered to be about feeling the performance. Interviews are regularly aimed at artists along the theme of did you live the music or scene? And to be 60

fair original works are often written from personal experience and the emotion given to the music or lyrics along with the delivery of the performance can colour the interpretation experienced by the audience. Choice of cover material is often based on what makes you feel good, or the ease of delivery, or how it suits your genre or style. Things to ask your performance buddy: Did it sound OK? Was it musically balanced, vocals to accompaniment? Did it seem to be the right tempo (not too slow or fast)? Did the key suit my vocal range? Did you notice many playing mistakes? Did the audience appear to like the choice of material? Did you get any comments or feedback? The golden rule is do not beat yourself up if there are any negative replies as every performance is a ‘one-off’ experience for both the performer and the audience. All feedback is part of the process of growing as a performer. Adapt your style or material to enhance the positive and practise any techniques that may have negative feedback. Remember that each time you perform will be unique for that performance only. Enjoy the thrill and buzz as it never ceases to raise the adrenalin levels and the joy from audience applause is addictive. Andy Harding Personal Training

n experienced fully qualified advanced personal trainer with additional fitness qualifications in running, kettlebells, core, nutrition, group training (fitness classes, bootcamps) TRX suspension training and boxing. Andy Harding Is a founder member of Whittlesey Sports Association. His main role is personal training clients on a one to one basis or a small group where some train with a relative or friend.

He is a freelance personal trainer who will visit your home or local park etc., bringing the equipment to you. He trains people for all different reasons; for example, those who want to lose weight and get fitter and healthier and people with different health reasons who need to be more active. Andy has also trained numerous people for special occasions, such as weddings, special parties and holidays and lots of people who need to get extra fit because they want to join the army, RAF, police etc., plus those looking to return to full health and fitness after injury. Last year he trained a young man who had to get very fit as he joined the army as an officer and a young lady who wanted to get fit and change her lifestyle to get into the police and they are now both in their dream jobs. He has trained many runners for marathons and half marathons and many who just want to enjoy the activity. He also has a running group called ‘Be a better runner’ – six-week running courses to help people improve their running. This is held every Wednesday at 7pm at Thorpe Hall (Sue Ryder), Peterborough.

Lots of Andy’s clients want to lose weight as this will make them fitter and healthier, so he does exercises with them to help them and also advises them with nutrition. Everyone is different, with different ages, sizes etc., and every session is geared for that person, making every one fun. He has had lots of success with people losing weight with one client losing six stone and he says most people want to look and feel better by losing weight and toning up. Andy, who says he was once very big and unfit, has now completed more than thirty half-marathons, two full marathons and nearly four hundred running races. A personal trainer for more than ten years, Andy runs Tuesday night fitness/circuits classes which he has been running for ten years at Paston Farm, Paston Ridings, from 7pm-8pm, where the venue has inside and outside facilities and where he occasionally puts on a bootcamp. Church Matters St Andrew’s Church, Church Street, Whittlesey PE7 1DD Holy Trinity Church, North Green, Coates PE7 2BQ St Mary’s Church, Station Road, Whittlesey PE7 1AB St Thomas’ Church, Oil Mills Road, Pondersbridge PE26 2TR

Welcoming Honoured Guests Our churches are open daily for personal prayer and visits. This expresses our desire to be inviting, welcoming and hospitable. Our buildings are places of prayer and for prayer. Please always consider yourself not only as a visitor but as an honoured guest. Make yourself at home in God’s house. God knows your joy; he knows your sorrows. Be glad or be sad. Stand and stare, sit and be silent, kneel and know that you are welcome. Offer yourself, just as you are, to God who loves you. Each of our churches is surrounded by a churchyard. St Andrew’s and St Mary’s churchyards are closed and not available for burials. St Andrew’s, however, does have the provision for interment of cremated remains at the discretion of the vicar and PCC. St Thomas’ and Holy Trinity’s churchyards are open and available for burials and interments. Permission for use is given according to the rules of the Church and governed by where you live – please discuss this with me if you have any concerns. Open churchyards where burials can still take place are maintained by the PCC and their limited funds. Closed churchyards are maintained by the local council. In our case this is Fenland District. Please bear this is mind if you are comparing the condition of our churchyards. I would also like to take this opportunity to advise you about the extent of the churchyard at St Mary’s. It consists of all the land within the walls next to the church (not just within the metal railings) and the detached churchyard across Station Road (i.e. the Straw Bear Garden). Finally, please respect the way you use our churchyards. Even in closed churchyards the remains of people buried there still exist even though the headstones may have been moved. Many thanks. Many thanks for your good wishes during my recent period of ill health. Thanks to all who helped to provide the ministry of the church, Rev Mike, Lay ministers Roger and John and our churchwardens, Sue, Ken, David, Sarah, Elizabeth, Alan, Paul and Rosemary.

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Adversity: Life’s Great Teacher Farmers in southern Alabama planted the same crop every year – cotton. Every available acre was cleared and planted. Their prosperity, and that of the town depended on cotton. Then one year the dreaded boll weevil devastated the whole area, destroying any hope of a harvest. The following year, farmers mortgaged their homes and planted cotton again, hoping for a good harvest. But as the cotton grew, the insect returned and destroyed the crop, wiping out most of the farms. Those farmers who stood their ground and survived those two devastating years of the boll weevil took the bold step to experiment with a new crop in the third year, something they’d never planted before – peanuts. The peanuts proved to be a hardy plant and its demand with the population soared, while the farmers reaped huge profits, allowing them to pay off all their debts. They planted peanuts from then on and prospered greatly. Then the farmers did a strange thing, they spent some of their new wealth on erecting a monument to the boll weevil in the town square. Without the adversity it caused they would have never discovered peanuts. Over the course of my life I’ve met some amazing people who have faced periods of unbelievable situations, yet they’ve come through the other end a much wiser and more well-rounded person than they were before. I’ve also met others who have given up without much of a fight. When facing adversity, I know what person I would prefer to be. God left us all a wonderful promise – “all things work together for the benefit of those who love God”. Out of adversity, good can rise. See you Sunday at 10.45am. RED CROSS CAMPAIGN SUCCESS Dear Editor, you never know how you would act in an emergency, yet our actions could save a life. This is why I think it’s fantastic that, after 10 years of campaigning by the British Red Cross, it will be compulsory for first aid skills to be taught in all state schools in England from 2020. It’s an impactful way to give young people the confidence they need to help someone. As parents, Ben and I are so thrilled our children will be able to learn these important skills so that they never feel completely helpless in an emergency situation. It’s also a relief knowing that if anything were to happen to them in the future, more people might be able to help.

This new legislation, however, is just for schools in England. At the moment teaching first aid in schools in the rest of the UK is optional. We support the British Red Cross’s calls for it to become a compulsory part of the curriculum throughout the UK so all school children get the same chance to learn how to save a life.

So many women I know, especially those weaning their babies, are terrified of the possibility of their child choking. But children learning first aid could make all the difference if one of their younger siblings was choking at home.

Marina Fogle is a campaigner, co-founder of the Bump Class and host of The ParentHood podcast. She is married to British Red Cross Ambassador and TV adventurer Ben and mother to Lido and Iona.

15 and 30 hours free childcare entitlement available for eligible families

At AJS we have welcomed children from the age of three into our new pre-school room. This larger space offers a wide range of play and learning opportunities with lots of exciting new resources. The children have enjoyed exploring their new environment alongside their new friends and our experienced and highly skilled Early Years’ practitioners. Whilst attending our pre-school sessions, children have the opportunity to take part in specialist teacher-led PE sessions as well as Forest School adventures. Children also become familiar with the school environment and have extended school transition activities with the Early Years’ teachers. So far, the children at our pre-school have engaged in storytelling, mark making and creative activities as well as developing early cooking skills. Children also have access to their own designated garden to continue their learning outdoors! Fifteen and thirty hours free childcare entitlement is available for eligible families.

Technology

A Cautionary Tale From Liam Last month I mentioned the need to keep information relating to passwords in a safe, separate place to allow loved ones to access your photos, contacts, etc. in the event of illness/sudden death.

W

ell, this month, I would like to provide information relating to maintaining backups of your computer/phone data to allow you to restore this information in the result of catastrophic data loss. Data (photographs, videos, documents) can be lost in several different ways. Examples of this are:

Laptop • Failure of your HDD (hard disk drive), where all the data is stored. • Corruption of your Windows operating system (which we are seeing more than usual due to the roll-out of the latest Windows 10 feature upgrade). • Damage to your computer by dropping, water ingress or other means of damage. Tablet • All of the above reasons can also affect tablets • An additional cause of loss of data is just by breaking your screen. Nowadays it is not unusual for a screen replacement for a tablet to be almost as costly as buying a replacement. For example, we sell 10.1-inch tablets in the shop for £99, whereas the usual minimum cost of screen replacement can easily be between £79-£109. Hence, it is more cost effective to replace the damaged tablet, than have it repaired. Phones • Again, most of the above reasons apply to mobile telephones. There is not much you can do to protect yourself from most of the above, except being careful. You can, however, take steps to create data back-ups, i.e. have a copy of all your important data copied to a ‘back-up’ device/‘back-up’ storage area or other means. Examples of this are: • Separate HDD back-up drive. For computers, the back-up drive should be attached to the computer and a Windows ‘back-up schedule’ created. This schedule can be daily, weekly or monthly and the computer will create a ‘system image’ of your hard drive on the back-up

drive. This is effectively a ‘snap-shot’ of your entire computer data inclusive of all personal data and can be used to restore the computer to the date of the last completed back-up. In the shop we sell 1Tb back-up drives and also set-up the schedule for your back-up for only £60. Alternatively, for £40-50, you can buy a back-up drive from Tesco/Asda, albeit here in the shop we only use high quality, tested, laptop hard drives which are of a better quality than most back-up drives sold in shops/supermarkets.

• Cloud storage. Not as strange nor as difficult as it sounds. Simply, companies such as Google, Apple, Samsung, Microsoft and others own vast ‘farms’ of storage devices which are connected to the internet. Using your own internet connection, you then connect to the ‘Cloud storage provider’ of your choice and send a copy of all your data to them. Alternatively, you can just place/keep all your data with the provider, rather than keeping the data on your device, thereby allowing you access to the data from any device anywhere in the world. One further word of warning – bear in mind that in the event of fire/theft your data may all be lost at the same time; so, consider taking action against this. Those are the two main means of creating backups. Should you need any further information please call into the shop and we will be pleased to help. Finally, in the event of total data loss due to HDD failure and you have not created a back-up we have very special software which allows us to restore data from a failed back-up device at a cost of £50-100. If we are unable to complete the data restore ourselves, we then recommend PC Image, Peterborough with whom we have a close relationship and their charges usually start at £300+ VAT. Hence, there are very good cost reasons to create your own back-up now. Happy computing! Deborah, Len, Liam and Oliver
