Introduction
Welcome to Your November Issue. Inside Highlights
Today I’m going to tell you about a love story… me and my dog Billy. We’ve just celebrated two years together, meeting for the first time when he was about ten weeks old and me somewhat older! Since that first fateful day we have been pretty much inseparable – save for my occasional lone trips to the shops or pub – as I work mainly from home – so we are virtually together 24/7. Billy is like my shadow. When I wake up he is there giving me a loving kiss, when I go downstairs, he goes downstairs, if I go into the garden, he quickly follows, if I sit down to watch TV, he sits next to me, or sometimes on top of me. You would imagine that this proximity would grate after a while… it certainly would with some people! But it doesn’t. We are quite happy in each other’s company, be it outdoors on long walks or in the home and office. The only downside is that as some people can become ‘car bores’ I am now officially a dog bore (which some of my Facebook friends I am sure would agree). Billy and I are an item. There. I’ve said it. Man’s best friend? … you bet!
Andy
It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m talking turkey, (along with trees, tinsel and trimming-up!) as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. This month’s issue features many local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events. As we head towards the end of another year, I’d just like to express my thanks to all of the team here at Discovering Magazines on yet another bumper year. It has been made possible through a lot of hard work, alongside the continued wonderful features reaching us, month after month, from our contributors, and of course, you, the readers, who keep telling us that we’re getting it right – many thanks to you all.

GO TO KING’S BARBER FOR A Right Royal Service King’s Barber is Whittlesey’s first and only traditional Turkish barbers. It not only offers a first-class hair cutting service but much, much more. Particularly popular is its cut through razor wet shave face mask and hot towel and it also offers a hot wax service available for your ears, nose and cheeks to clean up hair. With three barbers working most days, customers have the minimum waiting time or even no wait at all. However, if you do have to wait you can enjoy a Turkish coffee or Turkish tea with delicious Turkish Delight or better still while you are having your haircut.

before, but these guys do a wet shave that felt super smooth and it was shaved clean and no pulling… steam towels were fresh and didn’t smell stale like some other barbers. “Hair cut was sharp and precise, the products used were extremely nice and applied nicely, no manhandling and feeling like you are being tortured that it can sometimes feel like at other establishments. I will definitely be returning to these guys.”
King’s Barber has a loyal customer base, operating a walk-in policy with no need for appointments and also welcomes children.
“Great experience made to feel welcome and enjoyed the cut and shave. Nice people too which is always a plus. Son now having his cut too... would highly recommend.”
It has attracted high praise from local customers who have posted on its Facebook page:

ecome an Invisalign patient and preview your new smile before treatment even begins with our ClinCheck® technology that digitally maps your entire Invisalign journey. Your dentist designs a precise, personalised treatment plan, including the exact movements of your teeth and how long your treatment will be.
Once your dentist has confirmed you’re eligible for treatment, they will take photos, X-rays and digital scans, with the practice scanner, of your teeth. This scan will be used to create a ClinCheck® 3D treatment plan, just for you. After being custom-made and shipped to your dentists’ practice, you’ll receive a series of aligners to wear every day and change at home – on average every four weeks. You’ll visit your dentist around every four weeks to monitor progress and receive new aligners. After finishing your treatment plan, retainers will be required to maintain your new smile. Every innovative feature of the Invisalign System is designed to reveal the smile that you deserve. It’s why millions of people have now transformed their lives with our removable, near-invisible aligners.
Custom-made to move your teeth little by little, each tiny shift takes you a step closer to that next version of you – efficiently, gently and accurately.
We are currently offering £1000 discount on the complete process; this includes teeth whitening. Please call the practice on 01733 202587 to book a consultation.

Our Family Caring for Yours Lyncroft Care Home in Wisbech has undergone a luxury refurbishment and extension, with an additional fourteen en-suite bedrooms, refurbished lounge and dining areas, bistro café and pub. Home Manager, Brenda Durrington, explains, “We aim to create a ‘home from home’ feel here at Lyncroft; the refurbishment of the home has helped this enormously. Our rooms and communal areas are clean, light, airy and uplifting which helps our residents settle quickly and feel at home.” Residents at Lyncroft Care Home are encouraged to personalise their spaces, and the personal belongings they bring quite often become talking points. Resident John was keen to show staff his album of photos and press cuttings depicting his family history in farming and heavy horses. John Ward is a well-known figure in Wisbech and the shire horse world, so when staff heard about his history, they were keen to help him re-live some of his experiences. As part of their ‘Make a Wish’ initiative, the team at Lyncroft arranged for John to visit Broad Farm in Norfolk, where he spent time admiring their collection of heavy horses and explained how his family had bred similar animals, showing them at agricultural shows across the country.

“John had a fantastic day,” said Home Manager, Brenda Durrington. “It’s so important for us to facilitate trips like this so people can retain links to their past. It’s been fascinating to talk to John and hear how knowledgeable he is about farming and shire horses”. Matters YOUR MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
We are now well into autumn and where has this year gone? Autumn time means Remembrance Sunday will soon be upon us. This for me is a very important time of year when we remember all who have sacrificed their lives in two World Wars and other conflicts to date. I am sure like many, I will be reflecting on all casualties of war who gave their lives for the freedom we enjoy today. We commemorate and pay our tribute on November 10th and I will be honoured as Mayor to lay wreaths on behalf of the town and villages at the Coates, Eastrea and Whittlesey War Memorials. Cllr. Ray Whitwell will lay the wreath at Turves. The details of the local Remembrance Services can be found on the town council's website www.whittleseytowncouncil.gov.uk and on the council’s noticeboard at Peel House, 8 Queen Street, Whittlesey. The services are also listed in this magazine on page 66. This year we commemorated the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Landings, next year will mark the 75th anniversaries of both VE and VJ Days. Local services to commemorate these significant and important milestone anniversaries are being planned and organised for May 8th and August 15th, 2020. Details will be advertised nearer the time. Please let us all reflect on Remembrance Sunday that “for our tomorrows they gave their today”. Cllr. Julie Windle Mayor of Whittlesey

BOAT TAKES PRIDE OF PLACE Whittlesey Street Pride reports that the re-launch of the Gildenburgh boat has taken place thanks to Brian Barlow and partner Hilary of March who made it all possible by donating the boat they had at the Mepal Fishing Lake. The boat had been transported back to Whittlesey where it was refurbished and painted by Alan Hobbs and replaces a fading boat which the group already had at this location and sponsored by the NISA convenience stores. Twenty-two volunteer Street Pride members attended plus councillors Eamonn Dorling and David Davies and saw the official launch ribbon cut by Mr Barlow. A big thank you has been given to Lisa Hobbs catering, Alan Hobbs logistics and Peter Davies transport.
SUSAN TAKES ON POPPY APPEAL ROLE The Whittlesey branch of the Royal British Legion has announced that a new Poppy Appeal organiser has been appointed for Whittlesey and district. Susan Taylor, who lives locally, has taken up the challenge and is looking forward to working within the community and raising money for the Poppy Appeal. Judy Darby and Ray Thrower, the previous organisers, will be on hand with assistance and guidance for her, should it be required. Susan would be pleased if anyone who wants to help her during the busy Remembrance period contact her on telephone number 01733 686708 or mobile number 07504 668209. A quiz night to raise funds for Whittlesey Christmas Lights has raised £800. The committee has thanked everyone who helped the event particularly Gary Swan and his team for organising the quiz, Childers for allowing the use of the room, Alison and her team for an excellent supper, Lucy's Flowers for selling tickets and in particular the Letter B Quiz team who were the winners of the quiz, but donated the prize money to the lights’ appeal. 10

Do You Suffer From Tired, Aching Muscles? Most of us who take part in sport, incur physical stresses and sometimes injury. However, similar problems can also occur due to work or family life. With jobs that involve being in the same position for long periods of time, like sitting at a desk using a computer, driving, or standing, muscles can become tired and over-used, leading to aches and pains or even injuries. Sports and Remedial massage can be beneficial to treat tight, over-used muscles, to help relax them, ease tension and help prevent or treat injury. Many occupations result in tension build-up in muscles that are used repeatedly over a period of time. This commonly affects hairdressers, office workers and more manual occupations. Our Sports and Remedial massage therapist can use a variety of massage techniques to treat you and to assess underlying postural and occupational factors, providing you with advice on how to reduce problems in the future. Regular massage can also be beneficial to sports people, to help prevent injury, improve their training regime, assist rehabilitation and speed recovery times after exercise. For information on how you could benefit from Sports and Remedial massage, please call us on 01354 651200.

important for those who have become unsteady on their feet. Why not have a go and see how you can benefit from our class in Eastrea.”
Falls are one of the most common causes of accidental injury in older people, so it is important we maintain our strength and balance in later life to continue to enjoy activities like gardening, playing with grandchildren and socialising with friends.
The class meets at the Eastrea Centre, 2 Roman Gardens, Eastrea, Whittlesey, PE7 2DF every Tuesday 2-3pm (price: £3 per session).
Attending strength and balance classes increases confidence and helps you carry on doing the things you enjoy for longer.

Simon Hanna, senior clinical exercise specialist with the NHS, said: “I’ve seen how strength and balance classes have transformed the lives of older people. It can help them feel younger, more energetic, give greater flexibility and help people keep doing the things they enjoy. “Many people will not realise that strength naturally starts to decline from the age of forty but it is reversible and it’s never too late to maintain and improve on what we’ve got. A SPECIAL GRITTER LORRY, BACKING TEACHERS, AND NEGOTIATIONS WITH BARNIER – By Steve Barclay MP
As the autumn nights get colder and darker, it will not be long until we see gritter lorries out on our roads. There will be a new addition to the fleet serving our local area this year named after a brilliant charity called Scotty’s Little Soldiers which some of you will know. It is a local military charity that supports bereaved British Forces children and is named after Corporal Lee Scott, who lost his life whilst serving our country in Afghanistan. Lee was born and raised in Fenland. I was pleased to help with a request to get a new gritter lorry named in his honour, so do look out for it when you see them next out on the roads and give it a wave.
In my role as Brexit Secretary I have been involved in detailed negotiations across a range of European capitals from Copenhagen and Helsinki, to Madrid and Warsaw, as we try to secure a deal. Most people locally tell me they want Parliament to get on with it, as many MPs promised. I agree and will do everything possible to get Brexit done so that we can focus on our NHS, extra police officers, and levelling up investment in the Fens. At home, Bailey our dog helps put Brexit in context. He seems more interested in a walk than my updates on the backstop. I think he may be right.
Earlier this month was ‘World Teacher Day’ and like most people I would not be able to have the career I have without the dedication of teachers. So, I want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the fantastic teachers who work in North East Cambridgeshire. The impact teachers have on young people is lasting, as I see firsthand from my own two young children. We are prioritising support for schools in government, and locally I am working with the national Education Opportunity Area scheme which we secured last year. It is one of just 12 in the country, so it is a jewel in the crown for raising standards in our area.

Slow Cooker Method
• Soak the gammon joint overnight in cold water if necessary. • Reserve half of the sliced peppers and add the rest of the ingredients to the slow cooker, then stir well and switch on. • Set slow cooker to high setting and cook for six-eight hours hours on high (you can leave it on longer if you like). • Thirty minutes before the end of cooking, stir in the reserved peppers. • After six hours, check consistency of sauce and tenderness of meat. The meat should be starting to fall apart and sauce thickening. You can remove the lid and cook on high to finish the meat and thicken the sauce if necessary. • The meat should have broken up but if not, shred it in the slow cooker with two forks and mix well before serving.

Gin: F lavours of Agnes Arber At sixty-nine years of age, on May 24th 1948, Agnes Arber became the first woman to be awarded the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society of London, a world-famous institution dedicated to the study of natural history, recognising her outstanding contributions to botanical science. The Linnean Gold Medal is the highest honour and only awarded in recognition for ‘outstanding’ service to the Society. Agnes published numerous books on botany and philosophy, too. Signature Brands has created the Agnes Arber gins, in recognition and admiration of the first lady of botany. Agnes Arber Premium Gin is pot-stilled at the distillery from nine botanicals, plus premium grain spirit. The botanicals utilised are angelica, cassia, coriander, grapefruit, iris, juniper, lemon, liquorice and orange. I consider this to be a perfect balance and, (if it is possible!) even more perfect by adding a slice of pink grapefruit to the finished drink. Following on from the original concept, a further production was created, to include another flavour and more colour, to an already winning formula.
The gin was infused with rhubarb, adding a luscious tartness. Agnes Arber Rhubarb Premium Gin pairs extremely well with Ginger Ale, plus garnishing with a slice of orange, if so desired. The productions are very well presented and are fabulous for cabinet displays, likely taking ‘Pride of Place’ in any collection. Great gins on their own or adding tonic (if such is a preference), these will not disappoint, with a softness on the mouthfeel, which follows through superbly to the memorable palate sensation. E-mail: info@signature-brands.co.uk www.signature-brands.co.uk As always, enjoy!

Remember, Remember... Fireworks Safety and the Law BY NEIL JOHN, PARTNER, CIVIL LITIGATION
In early November many people will be going to watch a fireworks display, either at a public event in their local town or at the house of a friend or family member. There are many traditions associated with this season such as bonfires and toffee apples. There is also a prevalence of safety campaigns warning of the dangers of mishandling fireworks. However, despite these campaigns, thousands of people in the UK are injured by fireworks every year. If you are injured by a firework, the consequences can be life-changing, and you may want to know whether you can receive compensation for your injuries. Damages may be awarded for the injuries and symptoms or scarring that follow as well as to cover lost income, medical costs and other expenses incurred due to the injury. Public events, such as your local town’s annual firework display, should follow HSE safety guidance such as having safety barriers and trained fireworks operators to minimise the chances of a spectator getting injured and are required to ensure the premises are reasonably safe for the lawful visitors’ use under the Occupiers Liability Act, 1957. If you are injured at an event like this, you may have grounds to make a claim because the organisers have a responsibility to keep spectators safe. They are also likely to have public liability insurance. Injuries are more likely at private parties as they are unregulated. Fireworks are usually set off by people who haven’t had safety training and who may have limited experience of handling fireworks. Other factors that make injuries more likely include the consumption of alcohol and insufficient space to keep at a safe distance from the fireworks. The host could potentially be held responsible for any injuries received at an event like this.
What should you do if you are injured by someone illegally throwing a firework in the street? This is a criminal matter and should always be reported to the police. You may also be entitled to compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) which handles cases like these. If you are injured by a defective or faulty firework, it may be possible to make a claim against the seller, manufacturer or importer of the firework. In this case, the onus will be on you to prove that the firework was faulty. It is therefore strongly recommended that you keep the remains of the firework, the packaging that the firework came in as well as instructions and the purchase receipt. We understand that making a claim can be expensive and time consuming, so where there is a reasonable chance of success, Fraser Dawbarns offers a no win, no fee arrangement and are happy to discuss any personal injury matters if you are unsure whether you have a claim. Firework parties can be a lot of fun and Fraser Dawbarns wishes everyone an enjoyable evening, regardless of which event you are attending. We would like to remind everyone to be vigilant, stay safe and make sure that any vulnerable people are protected.

Matters SUDBURY COURT PRESENTATION Sudbury Court deputy social club chairman Mrs Pauline Huey is pictured handing over a cheque for £301.50 to Louise Nichols which will go to local good causes. There will be a Christmas bazaar at the social club on Saturday, November 30th, featuring a raffle, tombola, pickles, jams, cakes and bric-abrac stalls, as well as tea, coffee and biscuits.
ARTISTIC DISPLAY AT THIS YEAR’S WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL The Whittlesey Festival which took place in September was a tremendous success and the organisers hope that everyone has pleasant memories of the day. One of the many highlights was the Festival Schools Art Exhibition at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street. The artwork and crafts from the local primary schools and Sir Harry Smith Community College (SHSCC) were a tremendous sight to behold and everyone that took part rightly deserves to have a sense of pride at having had their work on display.
SO EGGCITING! Park Lane Primary & Nursery School Year 5 and nursery pupils were so 'eggcited' when they had the privilege of watching all 20 chicks successfully hatch from the eggs delivered by The Happy Chick Company. Mrs Susan Bradshaw, class teacher, said: “Hatching eggs in school is not only a fantastic learning experience for the children, it also creates a real sense of community. Children in all other year groups have visited Year 5 and have been fascinated to watch the chicks hatch and grow. Everyone agreed that it really was quite miraculous watching them crack and laboriously emerge from the egg.” 26

Your Garden
November Gardening Tips Brrr! The cold days of November are upon us and, if the weather prediction is correct, we are in for a harsh winter, so best to get the allotment or vegetable patch prepared for winter as soon as possible! Firstly, make sure that you dig up the weeds to prevent them taking hold in the spring, and clear the plot of summer crops; don’t leave them to rot, as this can increase the risk of disease and harbour unwanted pests. Dig the plot over but not if the ground is waterlogged or frozen, and add any manure or compost, to replace lost nutrients - no need to dig the manure in, as nature will take its course and the worms will help it find its way into the soil. Then, if you cover the soil with weed suppressant material or plastic, it will keep the soil warmer and prevent the growth of weeds in the early spring. Autumn always brings a plethora of leaves. Leaf mould makes good mulch and if you have plenty of leaves you can easily make a cage to contain the leaves using four stakes and stapling chicken wire around them. Just throw the leaves in and leave them for a year to rot down. November is the month for pruning fruit trees and bushes, except for cherries and plums, before the weather gets really cold. Also, bare-rooted fruit trees, bushes and canes should be planted now whilst they are dormant. When they are planted, spread a mulch of well-rotted manure around the base. Other tasks for this month include: • Propagate rhubarb crowns by lifting and dividing into smaller pieces, planting at the same depth in their new position, spread well-rotted manure around the plant, but don’t cover the crown. • Secure covers over compost heaps/bins; although the material needs to be damp, winter rain and snow will saturate it and slow the rotting process down. • Plan the crop rotation for next year. Planting one group of vegetables in the same ground, year after year, increases the risk of a build-up of disease. There are websites that provide planners; one such example is http://gardenplanner.suttons.co.uk. • Dismantle bean canes, if you haven’t already, as leaving them in the ground will cause the bases to rot. • Start to harvest winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks and parsnips; wait until after a frost for the parsnips, as the frost encourages the sugars which give parsnips their sweetness. Pick sprouts from the bottom up as this allows the top ones a chance to swell and, while you’re picking, remove any yellowing leaves to ensure good circulation. • Plant garlic cloves; if you have heavy soil that tends to hold water, then put either gravel or sharp sand in the base of the hole before planting. • Plant early “overwintering” broad beans, (either in the ground or in pots), peas, shallots and onions.

Whittlesea Bourne
This time of year, we can expect gusty winds and heavy rain to play havoc with our home and garden when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, fences and even trees. Then there’s the frozen pipes and radiators that won’t work after spending the summer months idle, to name a couple of household niggles. The effects of the elements are like magnets to the cowboy traders whose aim is to make even more winter misery, while lining their own pockets. Our advice is to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who ‘happen to be in your area’. They will ask for cash up front and, more often than not, it will be for work which is unnecessary. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card and say you will contact them at your convenience, should you need their services. You can then check their contact details or ask a family member of friend to do so on your behalf. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs that still need planning in before the festive season, www. safelocaltrades.com should be your first port of call. We have a range of professional, recommended and reliable trades, from chimney sweeps, boiler maintenance, electricians, roofing specialists, plumbers, tree surgeons – and just about anyone who can provide a service for your seasonal maintenance needs. However, there are some simple but effective ways you take steps to “winter-proof” your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare or December disaster: • Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks and blockages. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst – causing potentially expensive water damage. • Think about insulation. A properly insulated property is an absolute must. Make sure that you check the basics, starting with obvious draught points. Invest in some draught-excluder to keep doors and windows secure. Check the cladding around your boiler and pipes, and make sure that taps and faucets don’t leak. • Bleed your radiators. A great way to warm up your property is to bleed the radiators. This releases any trapped air, allowing hot water to fill every part of your radiator and warm the property more efficiently. • Get a boiler service. Arrange for a professional to service your boiler each year. As everyone starts to switch on or boost their central heating, the surge in gas consumption can lead to a big increase in boiler breakdowns. • Clear out your gutters. In autumn, leaves can collect in gutters and drains, leading to blocks and overflows - so it’s best to clean them regularly. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future. • Sweep your chimney. If your chimneys are in use, make sure that they get swept every year. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A SHOP MAKES
MASSIVE SAVINGS ON EVERYTHING IN STORE!
Tp24 is a leading UK LED lighting designer, manufacturing its products in China and distributing nationally from its Chatteris-based warehouse to the top 10 UK new home builders for the past 20 years. Understanding the need for LED lighting in residential properties and how people can benefit from the huge savings that can be made simply by swapping a few light bulbs from incandescent, compact fluorescents or halogen to LED, tp24 wanted to offer the same great value to local people. For several years, the front of its distribution warehouse on Park Street needed attention, with most residents regarding it as ‘an eye sore’ and only noticing the condition outside, not the business taking place behind the closed doors. But now, since the completion of the shop front, local residents and outlet shoppers have commented on the huge improvement made to the town.

Cash ISAs - Point of No Return? ISA savers should think long term to make the most of the tax breaks on offer. In the first five months of the year, savers deposited £6.3 billion into Cash ISAs, nearly twice the amount paid in during the same period last year.1 It’s a clear indication of savers’ nervousness about what Brexit might mean for their finances, and of possible disappointment with short-term investment returns in 2018. Financial markets are worried about Brexit too, and are almost fully pricing in a cut to interest rates by the middle of next year.2 In June, Moneyfacts reported that savings account providers had cut long-term fixed rates by the biggest amount since November 2016 in anticipation of the move.3 But that’s not all savers have to contend with. Recent Bank of England data revealed that the public’s expectation for inflation in five years’ time has jumped to its highest level in a decade, reaching 3.8% in May.4 At that rate, the spending power of money would be halved in 19 years. It’s a stark reminder of the erosive effect of inflation, even at relatively low levels. It also highlights the risks of holding funds in cash for your long-term plans, including for retirement. A survey earlier this year found that two out of three savers chose Cash ISAs because they knew they wouldn’t pay tax on their interest. Yet one in four of
Advertising Feature
those surveyed were still unaware of the Personal Savings Allowance.5 Introduced three years ago, it enables basic-rate taxpayers to earn annual interest of £1,000 from standard cash savings accounts before paying tax. For higher-rate taxpayers, the allowance is £500 a year. ISAs can be a core part of your financial plan to build tax-efficient funds for the future. But to make the most of the opportunities your allowance provides each year, it’s important to think beyond the short term. The value of an ISA with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested. An investment in a Stocks & Shares ISA will not provide the same security of capital associated with a Cash ISA. The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may be subject to changes in legislation in the future. Marcel A. Defined Benefits v Defined Contribution Pensions by Eamonn Dorling
Many people approaching retirement will be familiar with a final salary pension scheme because they were common in many occupations when their working life commenced. They are less common now, in these times they are also described as defined benefit (DB) schemes and they are called this because the benefits can be defined because they are based on the number of years’ service and a measure of the worker’s salary (you will note that I have not indicated final salary because in some schemes another calculation takes place). A DB scheme benefit can often be calculated using a simple calculator for the employee and a surviving spouse or partner may be included, usually at a reduced rate. Dependent children up to a defined age might benefit but this is where further research is required because there are many varieties of scheme rules and regulations. When the legitimate beneficiaries have all expired, the scheme has no further liability and there is no further drain on the pension fund. Behind the scenes there will be trustees or a committee that engages investment specialists to ensure the pension fund is adequately funded so that all pensioners reliant on regular income receive it. If the fund fails, there is a compensation scheme that protects (to some extent) potential and actual pensioners. To be clear there is something to protect workers, but it might not be as generous as the live scheme would have been, the point is that the responsibility for investment returns stays with the scheme. In contrast, a money purchase, personal pension, stakeholder pension or one of several ‘auto enrolment’ models are classed as
defined contribution (DC) pension schemes. These arrangements work on the basis that a pot of money is accumulated, then a pension (annuity) is purchased to provide an income in retirement. The responsibility for investment returns rests with the individual whether it is their own plan or a work-based scheme. DC schemes are more easily budgeted for from the viewpoint of an employer because the cost is known and the benefits are not their concern. It is still possible to create a substantial pension fund, but whether an annuity is the best option depends on circumstances at that time. It is even possible to transfer the benefits of a DB scheme in to a DC arrangement, whether this is a good idea or not is another conversation, but if you think that it is seldom permitted to transfer the other way – there needs to be a compelling reason(s) to give up the benefits of a DB pension arrangement if you are lucky enough to have one. To explore the possibilities of building a sound and tax efficient retirement strategy for you/ your family, contact an independent financial adviser for a free initial consultation. Refurbishing Your Own Laptop or Computer
ast month I wrote about creating a backup system image of your laptop/computer. One thing I forgot to mention is that if you own an Apple laptop/computer the type of back-up you should complete is called a ‘Time Machine’ back-up which if left running all the time allows you to roll-back one hour, one day or whatever period you should choose and, in the event of a hard disk failure, the actual ‘TimeMachine back-up’ can then be used to restore all your data and files on to a new hard drive. Anyway, on to this month’s techie bytes about how to refurbish your own laptop or computer. I will explain why the cost of a refurbished laptop is more expensive from us than, say, buying a secondhand laptop from eBay or local Facebook. Strip Down & Clean and Paste and Test The first thing to do is remove the battery. Then remove any panels on the rear of the laptop and then, having gained access, remove the wires attached to the wi-fi, then unscrew and remove it, followed by unclipping the RAM and removing them. Next remove the screw holding the DVD/ CD and slide that out. Finally, remove every screw holding the base to the top, and turn the laptop over. It will now be necessary to remove the keyboard using a spudgee, and remove all screws holding the top to the base. You may now very carefully separate the two halves, ensuring you carefully unclip the cables that are seen. You will now have access to the motherboard, which should be carefully unscrewed and then removed from the laptop. At this point we usually test all components, but it is unlikely you will have access to this specialised electronic equipment, so you will now concentrate on completing a ‘clean & paste’. This requires you to unscrew the fan and heat sink, carefully clean the fan and heat sink to remove all dirt – it is not unusual to find the heat sink either partially or fully blocked with dirt. Finally, using thermal paste (we
only use ‘Artic Ice thermal paste’ as we consider this the best for the job), place a pea sized blob on the processor and reassemble the heat sink. Reassembly is now a reversal of all the above. However, consider upgrading your RAM with a faster and larger RAM, as this will make substantial improvement to laptop performance, as would the installation of an SSD (solid state drive) which we install in all our refurbished laptops as these perform 10x faster than a normal hard drive. All the work completed above should turn the performance of your laptop into a £400/£500 machine but, more importantly, will ensure trouble free operation for another two/three years before a service will again be required. Software Build/Tune-up/Security You will now need to install the software required for the laptop to run. Nowadays, we only recommend installing Windows 10, preferably version 1809. Next, you will now want to find and download a program for creating music/DVDs, a word processing program, a video/music playing program, possibly Apple iTunes and iCloud, Adobe PDF reader, possibly a TV player such as BBC iPlayer, perhaps Google Chrome and Earth – all will give you the extra features and programs you will require that are not provided by Windows 10. For security you will want to add an ad-blocker on Chrome, and we suggest you use the new Windows Security as your anti-virus & firewall. Next, we perform our ‘ultimate tune-up’ which involves creating VRAM (virtual RAM), defragmenting or trimming the HDD/SSD, cleaning the Windows registry, removing junk files and creating a high-performance power plan more suited to your laptop. Happy computing! Deborah, Len, Liam and Oliver

This Month: Into the Dark... By Dave Bailey he calendar tells us it’s just past time for the biannual trawl around the house to change all the analogue and manual digital clocks. Having rehearsed and played Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ for the umpteenth time our thoughts stray to bangers and crackers.
Performing at firework parties and light switch on events seem to be inextricably linked and often it is hard to tell when the Christmas shopping build up begins and the firework party ends. The preparation will always be the same, it is cold, often wet and the timetable for events will never run to time. Bangers and squibs will go off unexpectedly and usually under the performance area and lights will not respond to the flick of a switch. If you have ever been asked to perform at a firework display it can be quite a fun event with blackjack toffee, hotdogs and caramelised onions and trying to play louder than the fairground rides which often form part of the evening. Thankfully only being asked to synchronise a backing track to a display once, which sort of went OK, is just one of the possibilities. The display manager said, “When I raise a red flag, press play”, but did not account for the two seconds of silence at the start of the track. On the plus side however, getting the beat to ‘We Will Rock You’ played live to match launched mortars detonating in the air at another event was a challenge, but luckily after the first chorus everything was back on beat. But this is all part of the fun, I think? It is worth remembering that stringed instruments do not like changing temperatures and getting them

out on the stage and retuning just before playing is a must. Also, your fingers may not want to go where you are aiming them on the fretboard or keys. At last year’s Firework Fiesta, it was so cold that even playing in fingerless gloves (I cut the ends off prior to getting up on stage) the stage was facing the Icy blast and it went right through to the bone. Placement of staging and speakers is also key for this type of performance as wind outdoors can change the audio focus area for the crowd and may often be heard clearly three fields away but may be almost inaudible to the audience. The smallest breeze can redirect sound in many ways. Placing remote sound reinforcement speakers at any great distance from the stage can also result in unacceptable echo back which can cause timing issues when playing. If a radio or Bluetooth link is used from the main stage mixer to remote units a delay called audio latency* can creep in during the stages of conversion to and from audio/radio/Bluetooth. Try to keep sound systems simple, locate the performance area at a point that provides crowd coverage but definitely not up wind from the fireworks and enjoy the evening. As soon as the last rocket fades to specks of ash it will be time to dig out ‘Mistletoe And Wine’ lyrics, fake Santa beards, Christmas jumpers and twinkling Christmas lights to do it all again. Local open mic listings can be found at: www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm *Audio latency is the delay between when an audio signal enters and when it emerges from a system. Potential contributors to latency in an audio system include analogueto-digital conversion, buffering, digital signal processing, transmission time, digital-to-analogue conversion and the speed of sound in air.

hittlesey Athletic Football Club are members of the Whittlesey Sports Association.
The club in its current guise was formed in 2014, following a successful merger of Whittlesey United and Coates Athletic Football Clubs and the subsequent joining of Whittlesey Bluestar Football Club.
The ‘merger’ helped the sustainability of football within Whittlesey and meant that all adult clubs within the town came under one name, ensuring youngsters coming through the ranks locally had a clear direction in to adult football and they all had the chance to play football at the level that matched their ability. We have three adult male teams, our 1st team playing ‘semi-professionally’ in the United Counties Division 1, our reserves playing in the Peterborough & District League Division One and our ‘A’ team playing a division lower in Division 2. We have recently added four junior teams (U8s, U10s, U12s and U15s) with all teams playing and wearing the same badge and kits which helps bring everyone together. We operate two main sites, Feldale Field on Drybread Road and The Manor Leisure Centre. You 62

will almost always find a home game at Feldale on Saturdays (both mornings and in the afternoon) and on some Sundays too. Our first team has admission charges (subject to change) of £4 adults with concessions available for senior citizens and children with both sites offering refreshments on match days. We recently officially ‘switched on’ our new floodlights which has ensured the development of our football club and we hope to soon introduce a new U18 team which will primarily play their matches midweek under the floodlights. To remain at the level we currently play at, we require a new stand to be constructed to ensure there is covered seating available for at least fifty people, but we hope to extend this to one hundred and have some improved covered standing too. Our ultimate long term aim for the football club remains to link up with the fantastic junior club our town offers, ensuring that children have a clear pathway from junior football all the way through to adult football and once playing adult football our town can offer them the chance to continue to play football at their respective level at a facility that matches their ambitions and one that the whole town can use and be proud of. Follow us @WhittleseyAthFC on Twitter or Facebook. If you feel you have something to offer, would like to come and see the site, would like to know our sponsorship opportunities or just want to know more about us or any of our teams then please email us at wafcchairman@mail.com. We look forward to seeing you at a match soon! N OV E M BE R 2 0 1 9
Christmas Extravaganza! This year's Christmas Extravaganza will take place on the Buttercross and nearby streets on Saturday, December 7th at 3.30pm-7pm with the lights of the town Christmas tree being switched on by our Lady Mayor at 4pm. There will be tombolas, hot food stalls, games, circus performers and all the usual fairground rides. The hugely popular photo booth has been sponsored by – and will be hosted by – Malcolm James Estate Agents. After positive feedback from last year's event, visitors will again be able to purchase wristbands for £5 which will allow multiple goes on various games and rides. We have local businesses to thank for their support and we look forward to seeing lots of you enjoying the music, singing and dancing, carol singing and of course Santa's Grotto.

ime was when a motorcycle was a cheap form of transport, used to get men to and from work, or with a sidecar fitted, to take the family out for the day. They were uncomplicated and easy to maintain.
That is not the case today however, when bikes can cost between £8000 and £12,000, with the ‘high spec' models costing a lot more. They are highly sophisticated machines, have excellent brakes and handling, and are often ridden mainly for pleasure. The Whittlesea Motorcycle Club was formed in 2001 to cater for the many bikers in the area who enjoy meeting up and riding out together, although a more ad-hoc group had been meeting for more than ten years previously. Now numbering more than fifty members, male and female, mainly from the Whittlesey and Peterborough area, it is run by a four-man committee. It is a very active outfit that participates in many events and shows. Each year at the end of July it runs a show on the village green at Coates, which often attracts more than 100 machines. It also participates in shows around the country, like the Pidley Mountain Rescue show (don't ask), in September and The Stilton Triumph Owners Club event and members often attend the event at 64

Whittlesham, where the whole village is closed off for the bikes. The club displayed a wide range of machines at the recent Whittlesey Festival, and always has its marquee and a display of machines at the big Motorcycle News event at Peterborough Showground each May. Some members run vintage or classic bikes, which always attract a lot of attention, but the more recent machines, some with amazing custom paintwork, can be very impressive too. Members meet up alternate Tuesday evenings at The Vine at Coates, for a 'noggin and natter,' or a ‘ride out’ for fish and chips somewhere. During the summer months many ride outs to places like Hunstanton take place, and some members meet up with other riders at a pub in Ramsey on the first Sunday of every month for a ride out… any excuse to get out and experience the freedom that two wheels gives. The club supports many local charities, its biggest event being the 'Easter Bunny' run to Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge where members meet up with other clubs on the way to deliver toys to the children in the hospital. Often some fifty machines will turn up at the hospital. It also actively promotes safe riding, and welcomes any responsible rider to join at a measly £10 per year. All income is ploughed back into the club and funds a Christmas lunch every year, as well as all the other activities. November sees the annual meeting and will also focus on local history with the competition being wool while December’s meeting will feature The Fenland Harmonica Guys and the competition will be silver. WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH
Is God Only Interested In Our Spiritual Life? I recall a conversation with someone who, though not a practising Christian, had decided to read the Bible by starting from the first book Genesis. Though not fully understanding it, he continued reading. Very soon he came to the book containing all the food and hygiene instructions God gave the Jews to live by. His comment was, “It was like walking through treacle, so I put the Bible down and never picked it up again.” Unfortunately, but quite understandably, he had interpreted this section as God restricting and controlling our lives through petty rules and rituals. His closing comment was, “How do you handle the boredom of being a Christian?” After assuring him that if he ever decided to visit one of our services he would discover they were anything but boring or full of petty rules and rituals, I then explained how that far from being restrictive they actually showed how much God desires humanity to not only love him, but also enjoy the best life possible. Many years ago, a Christian surgeon, concerned about the high death rate after operations, discovered the verse requiring people to ‘wash their hands up to the elbows.’ After practising washing his hands and arms then lifting them in the air to allow the water to drip off the elbows, he noticed the death rate was noticeably lower. I then referred to the requirement to remove human waste from the city by taking it outside the walls and burying it in the ground (no flushing toilets existed then) along with isolating those with contagious diseases until they were cured. All these are now common practice, leading to improved quality of life. These, and many others in the Bible prove that God really does care about both our practical and spiritual life. STOREY’S...
S
torey's Accident Repair Centre is a family run business establised in the 1920s and covering four generations.
Originally based in Farcet, the business is now run from a modern 15,000sq ft premises off Station Road, Whittlesey by its two directors, Hayden and Matthew Storey. The company is very proud to have been members of the National Body Repair Association (NBRA), which has a strict code of conduct that all members must follow, for more than twenty years. As a member, Storey’s is audited every year to ensure that its equipment and technician training allows it to meet current manufacturer-approved repair methods. This enables the company to work on all kinds of modern vehicles, including electric and hybrids, and to carry out structural and aluminium repairs safely.
Alongside accident repairs, Storey’s also offers the following services: • Alloy wheel refurbishment • Towbar supply and fitting • Vehicle diagnostics and fault finding • Advanced Driving Assist System (ADAS) calibration • Air-con service and repairs, including common R134A systems and the latest R1234YF, fitted in all vehicles from 2017 onwards – all by its F gas trained technicians • Routine servicing • Colour matching and mixing using its colour scanner – this enables it to match existing paintwork, even when no colour code is available • Caravan and motorhome accident repairs • Motorbike paintwork and repairs
Follow Storey’s on Facebook and Twitter @ storeysarc to view examples of its work and excellent customer feedback. All enquiries welcome and they are always happy to help.
Their services include all aspects of vehicle bodywork, from heavy crash repair to light cosmetic damage. Storey’s specialises in insurance work, working alongside all major insurance companies. As a policyholder, most people are not aware that you can choose who repairs your vehicle when filing a claim – most insurance companies will try and steer you towards their approved bodyshop, but the choice is legally yours. Storey’s has a large fleet of courtesy vehicles and its warranty on repairs covers the lifetime of the vehicle. They offer collection, delivery and mobile assessments at a time and place to suit you. Their state-of-the-art estimating and workshop planning programme enables it to deal with insurance engineers direct. The company can handle any insurance claim from start to finish and aims to make the process as stress-free as possible for its clients. 70

Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. For more information, please see www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/wltp or consult your retailer. Data correct at 03/2019. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information. Official fuel consumption figures for the Polo model range in mpg (litres/100km): Combined 44.8 (6.3) – 57.6 (4.9). Combined CO2 emissions 97 – 110 g/km.
