Introduction
Welcome to Your December Issue. Inside Highlights
For most people, December means just one thing… Christmas! Yes, it’s that time of year again when everyone’s thoughts turn to December 25th and this month’s issue is guaranteed to get you in the mood for the big day with plenty of Christmas themed articles! Whatever your faith, the festive holiday season is the time when families invariably join together to celebrate and take a well-earned break from the stresses and strains of everyday life before we get ready for another new year... it doesn’t seem possible that the Millennium was almost twenty years ago! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our readers, contributors and advertisers who have supported us throughout 2019. We always endeavour to supply you with the best possible publication each month, but it would be impossible without your help, so please keep up the good work and keep us informed of your activities in the New Year. So, on behalf of all the staff on the magazine I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas. See you in 2020!
Andy
A very warm welcome to this, our last issue of 2019. December is a time for both reflection on what’s gone and anticipation for what’s around the corner of the new year. We can think about what we’ve achieved; those places we’ve visited and new people who may have come into our lives; others who we’ll see no more, but whose memory will remain strong. I prefer to look forward, though, and those new year resolutions are already in the planning stage! In the meantime, on behalf of all of the team here, my sincere thanks go out to everyone who has helped us in any way this year, especially our advertisers and contributors, with their regular features, wonderful advice and suggestions. All the very best to you all for Christmas and for 2020 – good luck, but most importantly, good health!
Claire x
And finally, from our Sales Manager Cheryl... A huge thank you to all of our advertisers, contributors and readers for all their fantastic support over the last twelve months! I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year... looking forward to 2020!
Cheryl x

ecome an Invisalign patient and preview your new smile before treatment even begins with our ClinCheck® technology that digitally maps your entire Invisalign journey. Your dentist designs a precise, personalised treatment plan, including the exact movements of your teeth and how long your treatment will be.
Once your dentist has confirmed you’re eligible for treatment, they will take photos, X-rays and digital scans, with the practice scanner, of your teeth. This scan will be used to create a ClinCheck® 3D treatment plan, just for you. After being custom-made and shipped to your dentists’ practice, you’ll receive a series of aligners to wear every day and change at home – on average every four weeks. You’ll visit your dentist around every four weeks to monitor progress and receive new aligners. After finishing your treatment plan, retainers will be required to maintain your new smile. Every innovative feature of the Invisalign System is designed to reveal the smile that you deserve. It’s why millions of people have now transformed their lives with our removable, near-invisible aligners.
Custom-made to move your teeth little by little, each tiny shift takes you a step closer to that next version of you – efficiently, gently and accurately.
We are currently offering £1000 discount on the complete process; this includes teeth whitening. Please call the practice on 01733 202587 to book a consultation.

Lyncroft Care Home Host Successful Open Days To Showcase Luxury Refurbishment Lyncroft Care Home on Clarkson Avenue in Wisbech enjoyed a successful weekend recently, showcasing the extension and refurbishment project that has been ongoing for the past few months. The new areas of the home were declared officially open when the ribbon was cut by the Mayor of Wisbech, Councillor Michael Hill and the Rt. Hon. Stephen Barclay, MP for North East Cambridgeshire. During the weekend, over one hundred visitors had the opportunity to take a tour of the home, meet the staff team and sample the delicious food on offer. The residential care home has an additional fourteen en-suite bedrooms, plus refurbished lounge and dining areas, bistro café and even its own pub! Brenda Durrington, Home Manager at Lyncroft Care Home, explained, “The refurbishment of the home is already having a positive impact on the day-to-day lives of our residents and their families. People appreciate having more places to relax and enjoy visits with their families. Having such a wonderful, fresh and spacious environment makes all the difference to people”. Other new areas of the home include a hairdressing salon, spa room, and library. The home features

The interior design has been carefully chosen to offer opportunities for reminiscing, using old photographs from the local area and talking points, with themes such as vintage motoring with maps, books, and items to look at or read.

Health
Podiatrists Keep You Walking Podiatrists are health care professionals who have been trained to prevent, diagnose, treat and rehabilitate abnormal conditions of the feet and lower limbs. Podiatrists can also prevent and correct deformity, keep people mobile and active, relieve pain and treat infections. They can give you and your family advice on how to look after your feet and what type of shoes to wear. They can also treat and alleviate day-to-day foot problems. Our team of podiatrists can provide advice and treatment if you have painful feet, thickened or discoloured toenails, cracks or cuts in the skin, verrucae, or any other foot-related problem. We can assess your feet and also prescribe orthoses, which are tailor-made insoles, to help to relieve arch, foot or heel pain. Orthoses go into your shoe to help to re-align your foot, take pressure off vulnerable areas of your foot, and help improve your foot function. Even if your feet are generally in good condition, you might consider having a single session of podiatry to have the hard skin on your feet removed, toenails trimmed, find out if you’re wearing the right shoes, (take your shoes with you for specific advice on footwear), or just to check that you’re looking after your feet properly. Podiatrists can also help with more complex foot problems, including preventing, diagnosing and treating injuries related to sports and/or exercise. General foot or heel pain is a common occurrence and a condition we treat regularly. In most cases the pain is caused by some form of mechanical
injury caused by small repetitive injuries that occur at a rate faster than the body can heal them. Your podiatrist can assess your feet, diagnose your problem and make recommendations for self-care at home, and provide a treatment plan to help solve your problem. Contact us today, on 01354 651200, for information about how we can help your foot problem, and like us on Facebook, for all the latest updates and offers.

Make Your Own Christmas Wreath! WITH LUCY’S FLOWERS, WHITTLESEY
Five steps to craft your own centrepiece to hang on the front door or in a living room or hallway
What you’ll need:
Wreath ring (approx. 25cm diameter) Secateurs/hardy scissors A spool of florists’ wire A sheet of moss A selection of foliage and flowers 1) Collect your foliage and flowers. Choose from the wide range in your local florist’s shop, and supplement with extras cut from your garden, or gather some on a walk in the countryside. Birch branches, holly and ivy add a seasonal touch. 2) Prepare your wreath ring. First, take your moss sheet and wrap it around your wreath ring. Then, wrap your florists’ wire clockwise around the moss, leaving gaps of 4cm evenly around the wreath. Pull the wire tight. When you have created a full circle, cut the wire and twist the ends together. 3) Trim your stems. Cut your stems to between 7cm and 15cm long and lay them in groups of two to three stems, staggering down, so the tips lay slightly below each other. You’ll need to make about twenty groups to fill your wreath. 4) Start arranging. Take your first group of stems and lay them diagonally across the wreath ring. Use more wire to secure the base of the stems to the wreath ring, but don’t cut the florists’ wire from the spool. Now pick up your second bundle of stems and lay them just below the first. Again, secure with the same length of wire. Continue working around the wreath clockwise, never cutting the wire, tucking the last section of stems beneath the previous ones, until the whole ring is covered.
fir cones, small decorations, or even weaving in some fairy lights. Be careful not to overdo it though, as the natural look is still going to be best. Finally, tie in some ribbon for hanging, and wait for the carol singers to arrive... whilst enjoying a little pre-Christmas tipple! Lucy’s Flowers are offering readers an opportunity to come and make your own wreath in support of, and to raise money for, Cancer Research. You will also be able to purchase handmade craft items to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

TACKLING MODERN SLAVERY, SECURING A NEW BREXIT DEAL AND MORE INVESTMENT IN OUR SCHOOLS – By Steve Barclay MP
It’s been a very busy few weeks in Westminster, Brussels and here in North East Cambridgeshire. As many readers will be aware, I have been serving nationally as Brexit Secretary for almost a year. A key part of my role has been negotiating with EU nations to help secure a new Brexit deal. Initially, we were told this was an impossible task. But after many weeks of hard work and determination, we managed to negotiate a good new deal that allows us to deliver on the referendum result and get Brexit done. After constant stalemate in Parliament, the upcoming General Election will now be an opportunity to end the deadlock and get on to other priorities.
areas nationally to achieve this status and it is a real boost to our local schools. It means we get additional investment to help train and attract the best teachers, which improves the provision of education locally. The Government recently announced it was making an additional £18m available for this scheme, which is great news for our schools, teachers, and most importantly, children. Between now and election day on December 12th I will, as ever, be out and about in the community, including as part of my local campaign. Please do come and say hello and have a chat. I’d also like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very happy Christmas.
Away from the Brexit negotiations, I recently attended the Rosmini Conference that aims to tackle modern slavery in our area. This is an issue I have repeatedly highlighted over the years and the Rosmini Conference was a useful chance to discuss best practice. It’s a great privilege to be in a position to highlight the importance of tackling this terrible, largely hidden, crime and to work with the local police, council, Rosmini Centre, Ferry Project and others to identify where it occurs. Another issue I hope to continue making progress on is our status as an Education Opportunity Area. We’re one of only twelve

FROZEN KINGDOM Resilient youngsters from Park Lane Primary & Nursery School spent a day in school training to become survival experts. The event was planned by the students’ class teachers to launch their new topic ‘Frozen Kingdom’. The pupils came to school dressed geared up for the weather and ready to develop skills that might help them survive in a wilderness. The children learned the basics of semaphore – a communication method used in the Navy for many years. Sticks, string and blankets were used to create shelters which could protect the inhabitants from the worst of the elements. Some shelters relied on using established trees and bushes; others were free standing and used an understanding of strong shapes. Fire pits had been dug by staff members to also allow the skills of fire-lighting and open fire cooking to be experienced. Finally, as Whittlesey is not well-known for its icy slopes, the students travelled to Tallington ski slope to experience tobogganing.

‘TREE-CYCLE’ THIS CHRISTMAS TO SUPPORT PEOPLE NEEDING HOSPICE CARE Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice’s popular charity tree-cycling is back, helping local people recycle their real Christmas trees while raising vital funds for the hospice. The scheme, first launched by Nene Valley Tree Services last year, saw recycled Christmas trees raise more than £400 which could pay for 21 hours of hospice care. This year the charity Christmas tree-cycling service will be bigger and better than ever, with collections now available directly from people’s own homes on January 4th and 11th, 2020. In return for a £10 donation, Christmas trees will be collected and chipped into mulch to be used in the beautiful grounds of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and donated to local farms. This means residents who chose to Tree-Cycle in support of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall will not only raise vital funds for local families needing care from the hospice but reduce landfill and support local farming businesses too. Local residents can call 01733 225999 to see whether collections are available in their postcode. For more information on Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice visit www.sueryder.org/thorpehall Photo: Staff from Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and Nene Valley Tree Services get together to launch this year's charity Tree-Cycling scheme

BARN OWL MYSTERY The owner of a barn owl found in Whittlesey is being sought.
COUNCILLOR SURGERIES WILL BE HELD AT PEEL HOUSE IN QUEEN STREET FROM 9.30AM TO 10.30AM ON THE FIRST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH THROUGHOUT 2019. Councillors present on Saturday, December 7th will be: Councillor David Mason (District & Town Councillor) Councillor David Davies (Town Councillor) If you have any matters of concern and wish to discuss them with a Councillor, then please come along and let us know.
The bird was spotted on September 9th, the day after the Whittlesey Show, in the cemetery grounds of the main church tangled up in a tree with its equipment on, so someone had clearly lost the bird. However, efforts to find the owner of the bird, which has been kept safe by a local person who wishes to remain anonymous, have been unsuccessful. If anyone has any information as to the owner of the barn owl, which can’t be released into the wild because it has been hand reared, then please contact Discovering Whittlesea and we will pass on details.
EASTREA AUTHOR’S ANNIVERSARY Eastrea scientist Brian J Ford is celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of his first book on the secret weapons of WWII.
PROUD OF YEAR’S PERFORMANCE Whittlesey Street Pride has thanked its members and sponsors for supporting its efforts throughout 2019. Organisers say they have made a big impact on the litter that has been left in certain areas, but much more needs to be done in other places that they pick litter. A New Year’s Day litter pick will be held at the Butter Cross, Whittlesey at 10am, all are welcome.
Professor Ford, who was the organiser of the project that gave Eastrea its village hall, spent time behind the Berlin Wall collecting information, and also at the Foreign Office in London, to research for the book which was published in New York.
CAR SCHEME CELEBRATION Whittlesey Community Car Scheme has held an afternoon celebration gathering of their drivers and many of their clients – supported by the Co-op – at the Manor Bowls Club where they were entertained by The Whittlesey Singers. The scheme is a voluntary car service for medical and social journeys, supported by Cambridgeshire County Council (Passenger Transport), Care Network Cambridgeshire, and local charities and serves Whittlesey, Coates, Eastrea, Turves and Pondersbridge. It provides door-to-door transport for people who do not have the use of a car, and who cannot make an essential journey by bus or by Dial-a-ride, and is available Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm. It is particularly aimed at helping the elderly and those without transport to get out and about. The Community Cars’ drivers will be taking their Christmas break from Saturday, December 21st, and they will resume on Monday, January 6th, 2020. Club Spotlight
Whittlesey Walking Football Club
Your Photo: courtesy RWT Photography
W
hittlesey Walking Football Club was founded in the spring of 2017 by some of the senior members of the Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Club.
Walking football is an initiative of the Football Association to encourage male or female players over the age of fifty to keep playing the game they love or even start as a newcomer. It can be played indoors or outdoors, and Whittlesey has the perfect indoor facility at the Bowls Club on Station Road.
The club welcomes males and females, no matter of ability or health. The group is forward thinking and has affiliated with the Cambridgeshire Football Association, joined the Whittlesey Sports Association and also the new Walking Football League that takes place once a month in Peterborough. For more details contact John Bunting 07934 674248 or email Johnbunting63@yahoo.com Alternatively just turn up on a Monday morning to see what the club is all about.
The game itself is like your traditional 5/6-a-side. However, it is at walking pace and more of a social game with teams at the Whittlesey sessions mixed each week and matches played in the right spirit. The benefits are not only keeping you active but to meet and socialise with like-minded individuals. At the beginning, membership was small but now a regular 10-14 turn up each week from a potential squad of close to twenty. The sessions are every Monday morning (Bank Holidays excepted) from 9.20am-11am and the first session is free, thereafter it’s a nominal £3 a session. 24

Your Community Transport
Community Transport FACT has announced a new exciting service… a community support hub where a very warm welcome will be waiting for you.
A safe and welcoming environment for information on local services, where you can make yourself a cuppa, meet others within the hub or just have a good old-fashioned chat with the staff working in the hub. Staff will be on hand to make phone calls for you to help set up services and help you with any paperwork you’re struggling with. You can also book onto the exciting new trips that FACT is in the process of arranging. On offer too will be regular drop in sessions with other professional organisations so you can chat with them or listen to see what they have to offer. Launch date is Monday, January 6th, 2020 at 10am. The hub thereafter will be open Monday-Thursday at 10am-2pm. No appointment needed, just pop by – FACT staff look forward to welcoming you.
The Fenland Flag depicts a rousing tiger which is an historical nod to the nickname ‘Fen Tigers’, which was first used of local inhabitants by Dutch engineers who arrived to help with the drainage of the Fens. It then has a blue and yellow backdrop which represents the agricultural prosperity of the region and the waterways and rivers. Dozens of car stickers, bunting and boat pennants have been made in an effort to spread the word. FACT Community Transport are supporting the Fenland Flag as it’s important to us that local organisations and groups work together to build a strong community feel. Our buses will have the flag ‘flying’ proudly whilst travelling throughout Fenland, Huntingdonshire and East Cambs. If you spot one please give the driver a wave and comment on our page stating where you have seen it. Please come along and enjoy a mince pie and a cuppa on Mince Pie Monday – 11am until 2pm on December 16th, 2019. Enjoy a chat and catch up with friends, old and new. All are welcome! For further information on our services, please call FACT on (01354) 661234.
In other news, a flag to represent the traditions and importance of the Fenland region has been created by a writer from Ely. James Bowman hopes that the grand-looking Fenland Flag will become as notable as the Black Country Flag which has risen to fame in the West Midlands. If you would like to follow the progress there is a Facebook page ‘Fenland Flag’ which has more details.

When Will Grandparents Be Recognised? ASKS DANIEL SIMS, FAMILY SOLICITOR AT FRASER DAWBARNS
With Christmas around the corner, many families will be making preparations to spend time together over the festive period. However, in cases where parents have separated or divorced, this is not always so straightforward. While both parents automatically retain the right to see their children after a relationship breaks down, grandparents do not, and this can sometimes make it difficult for them to see their grandchildren. It can be heart-breaking to be denied the opportunity to spend time with your grandchildren, but a recent study has shown that this situation is not uncommon. In some areas, as many as one-third of grandparents have been restricted from seeing their grandchildren, and many believed that parental divorce or separation had played a role in this. If, after a relationship or marriage comes to an end, the separated parents cannot agree on the living and contact arrangements for their children, either one can make an application to the court for an order, setting out the arrangements. The law presumes that it is in the best interests of the child to have both parents involved in their upbringing. However, there is no such presumption in favour of grandparents spending meaningful time with their grandchildren. Whilst grandparents can initiate legal proceedings, the court must give them permission to start a case, and will have to consider the connection that they have, and any risk that the case could cause harm and disruption to the child. The courts do recognise the importance of a relationship between the grandparent and grandchild and, when an application for contact is made by a grandparent, it is often granted unless there is a good reason why it should not be. However, the reality is that grandparents face additional hurdles when fighting for contact.
Last year, it seemed as though some of these hurdles were going to be removed. In the summer of 2018, some MPs called for a change to the Children Act to ensure that relationships between grandparents and grandchildren were maintained in the event of parental separation. The House of Commons suggested amending the law to extend the presumption of involvement to include grandparents, and to remove the requirement to apply for permission. Unfortunately, these proposals did not get off the ground, and at the current time, the legal position for grandparents remains unchanged. Calls for legal reform continue, and it is hoped that this will be addressed in the future, so that the law will come to formally recognise the role that grandparents play in their grandchildren’s lives. The family solicitors at Fraser Dawbarns LLP are always happy to offer advice, and have experience assisting grandparents who are making an application to the court for access to grandchildren, as well as helping with a range of family disputes. We offer a range of pricing options and levels of involvement, so we are able to tailor our service to best fit your needs.

‘TIS the season to be jolly – but as we prepare for the season of goodwill, not everyone shares the Christmas spirit. With many of us starting the Christmas shopping earlier, there is a fair chance that many of our shop purchases and online orders are beginning to pile up. So, with gifts galore adding to the decorations, tree, food and drink, December is a time when many of us let our guard down, amongst the excitement leading up to the big day. For opportunist thieves, visible presents under the tree, open car boots full of shopping while loads are being taken into the house, and even the possibility of an unlocked garage are rich pickings which can turn your Christmas from being ‘Merry’ into ‘Miserable’!

Equally, flaws in home security while out and about visiting friends and family are a beacon to thieves – so always remember to check your alarm and never leave doors, windows or garages unlocked. Some tips for a safe and happy festive season:

• Shorter days mean a longer time for thieves to be in operation – always lock your car and front door when entering your home. • Keep a light on indoors and outdoors if you are out visiting friends or family. • It may be an idea to fit some motion detector security lighting – it won’t just be carol singers who come calling. • Keep your personal data safe – and securely dispose of receipts. • If you are expecting parcels or deliveries whilst you are away from home, try and arrange for them to be delivered to an alternative address instead of them being hidden by the bins!

• Away over Christmas? – plan ahead. If you’re going away at Christmas, be sure to cancel any newspaper or milk subscriptions. Arrange for a neighbour to park on the driveway to help create the impression someone is home. Do not to leave descriptive telephone answering machine messages like “we’re away skiing for the Christmas holidays”, or post your plans on social media. T
And So This Is Christmas... his month we will all be out shopping for Christmas presents, and no doubt this will include a few ‘techie’ items. So, we thought it worthwhile to provide a few hints to consider when buying items.
Laptops A few pointers here – avoid any laptop with only 32Gb SSD/’Memory’. After a few updates/ upgrades from Microsoft, you will find that feature upgrades cannot be installed due to lack of hard drive space. Also, don’t be tempted by 1Gb/2Gb hard drives. Most people do not need nor use this space, only if you are downloading and saving films or thousands of photographs will this be needed. Rather, go for a laptop with a 120Gb/ 240Gb SSD. A solid state drive performs up to 10x faster than an ordinary hard drive. Laptop performance is significantly improved, and over time the laptop will not slow down as it would with a normal hard drive. Also, look out for laptops with either i3/i5 processors. Again, they will perform significantly better than laptops fitted with a Pentium processor. However, a Pentium processor with an SSD will perform equally as well as an i3/i5 without an SSD. Chromebooks are, relatively, inexpensive. However, you will need to bear in mind that this uses the ‘Chrome’ operating system, which cannot always support some of the features you may want to use and which are readily available from Microsoft Windows. However, once you are used to some of the differences, they are an excellent laptop for surfing and emailing. A final point here – if you are buying a laptop to replace an existing but slow laptop, why not consider having the existing laptop ‘refurbished’? With a new SSD, clean and paste and upgraded RAM, you may find you then have a laptop performing at the specification of a £400/500 laptop, at a relatively modest cost of £169-£209, so don’t hesitate to seek our advice.
Gaming Towers Only buy one of these if you are sure you don’t want a new Xbox or PlayStation console. Then decide what games you want to play and check the specification of gaming tower required to play those games. Next, whatever GPU (graphics card) is required, go for either the next level GPU or, preferably, two steps up. That way you will be over-specifying your tower and building in redundancy for future games’ GPU requirements. An excellent moneysaving tip here is to choose AMD processors over Intel. In virtually all testing, AMD performs the same, if not better, than the equivalent Intel processor at a significantly lower cost. Games Consoles You basically have two main choices here. Either a PlayStation console or an Xbox console. From our perspective there is little to choose between the two, so do a little Googling and make your choice. Also, as it’s Christmas, ensure you buy a console from a retailer providing a good selection of ‘free’ games. Tablets The choice here is between Apple and Android. With your Apple ID and features (especially if you have an Apple iPhone) you can do more with an Apple than Android. However, for general browsing, YouTubing and emailing, you can buy very good tablets starting from £120. In fact we do an eight core, 64Gb memory 8Gb RAM tablet here in the shop for only £99. That compares to iPad prices of £450-£1000. Hope this feature helps a little with your selection and wishing all our past and present customers and readers a very Happy Christmas and New Year. Happy computing! Deborah, Len, Liam and Oliver

Pets’ Corner
Keep Your Pets Safe At Christmas by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre
Over the festive season, amongst the merriment and cheer it can be easy to forget our pets cannot always have what we have and that we may need to be extra vigilant with what they are up to, ensuring they are not getting into festive mischief. has started to make its way along intestines. Many pet owners have also reported cats climbing and then becoming entangled in lights, tinsel and other decorations. This can become tight around limbs causing deep lacerations and cutting off circulation and if wrapped around the neck the outcome can be worse.
Chocolate Everyone loves chocolate and over Christmas it’s not uncommon for us to have lots of it all over the house. Also don’t forget some people give chocolate as gifts and, even though wrapped under the tree they may seem protected, your dog can probably smell it under that wrapping and can easily chew through to the chocolate, wrappers and all! Chocolate contains theobromine, this is what makes our pets ill. The darker the chocolate the higher the concentration. Your pet only needs to ingest a small amount to become ill. Signs can include vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness, loss of balance and seizures; in extreme cases, it can even cause death. If you think your pet has eaten chocolate contact your vet immediately. Decorations They look so shiny and exciting, so much in fact that our pets have a tendency to want to taste or eat them, regardless of the fact they have little or no taste. All pets can be tempted to chew through wires which can cause electrocution, sometimes a small shock, but it can cause death to smaller animals. Tinsel and ribbons and tree decorations can be easily ingested, becoming stuck along the digestive tract. It’s rarely a simple procedure, especially when a large amount has been swallowed and it

Plants We often like to bring plants into the house this time of year, in pots or in the form of attractive wreaths. Holly and mistletoe berries and leaves can cause vomiting, convulsions and even death, so are best kept well away from pets and where possible best for them to be fake. Pine needles on real Christmas trees can cause nasty stomach upsets, and some dogs are tempted to urinate up the trees. Poinsettias are an irritant, if ingested they irritate the mouth and the stomach. They can also irritate some humans too. Food Lots of rich food is consumed over the festive period, but lots of what we eat our pets cannot. It’s easy to forget that raisins are in Christmas puddings and mince pies. These are toxic to our pets and they are often left out for Santa and our furry friends eat them before he gets a chance. Nuts and grapes are also best not consumed; macadamia nuts can cause tremors, staggering, increased body temperature and vomiting. Don’t forget onions and garlic are toxic too. These are usually inside foods as ingredients and are often forgotten. It’s best not to give any of our food to our pets; you can get special 'Christmas dinners’ for them that are safe to eat. Alcohol It’s never okay to give pets alcohol! Not only is it toxic, but it can damage organs, the same as it can for us. All the staff at Whittlesey Veterinary Centre wish everyone a happy, safe, enjoyable Christmas and New Year. DE CE M BE R 2 0 1 9

This Month: Presents Anyone? By Dave Bailey usicians are a funny lot, you have all seen the T-shirts ‘I have too many guitars said no man ever’, in fairness it should say no person as a number of my female musician friends fit well into that phrase.
Whilst most people are happy with socks and smellies, we musicians would always prefer accessories, cables, strings, effects pedals, or a nice shiny new instrument. Whilst the normal family member may wax lyrical over a pair of comedy socks, unwrapping a T-shirt with a guitar on it will satisfy the muso’s Christmas wishes (usually). But be warned, consider if your other half is right or lefthanded to make sure the design is correspondingly matched to their own playing preference. Seriously though what can you buy a friend or loved one with a musical theme? Let’s start with basics, how long have they been playing/performing? A beginner will usually have the basic teach yourself to play type of song book, some come with instructional CDs/DVDs, and as long as you do not duplicate what they already have there are many available through local music shops or online. Consider an online subscription to web-based lessons or a subscription to a monthly magazine for the instrument that they play. Local music stores do have in-house lessons and a voucher for a short course is an alternative worth considering. There are also many local music teachers that cover all genres

from classical right through to heavy rock. Most will sign up for a trial course. For the more advanced player there are many songbooks covering either compilations of various artists/genres or specific performers or songs from their albums. Guitar tuners come in a variety of types and prices ranging from the small battery powered clip on right up to the true bypass strobing rack mounted variety with prices from around £7 up to a mind boggling £642. A clip-on will suit most acoustic guitarists whilst a reasonably priced pedal will be great for the gigging musician with either an electro acoustic or a solid guitar. Ukuleles are also a good choice as a present with prices for a basic playable model starting at around £22 online with other models available from local music shops with prices starting from £14, and of course all of the tuners/strings/ books are available as presents or stocking fillers. For the piano player whilst most electronic models come with a built-in metronome, however acoustic old school upright and grands do not. A metronome, either mechanical or electronic, is a good teaching aid and can be purchased from £8.99 for a small electronic, up to £25 for a mechanical pendulum type. For brass and woodwind players the back stop, books, cleaning kits, reeds, and lessons are all available locally and all will surely raise a smile on Christmas morning. The Birth of Jesus, According to Matthew and Luke... Over the next few weeks we would like to encourage everyone to read the accounts of the birth of Jesus in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. These books are found in the New Testament section of the Bible. Be aware of all the characters in the accounts, those in the foreground and those in the background. Think about the differences between these two versions. There are shepherds in Luke but none in Matthew. There are wise men in Matthew but none in Luke. Where does the story begin and end? Is it Bethlehem or Nazareth? Why are there differences? What do they teach us? Matthew and Luke are two different writers writing for audiences with different backgrounds. Both are familiar with the Old Testament prophecies of the coming Messiah and make their choices as to which ones to include in their narrative. They do have a single purpose – to present to their readers the reality of the origins both human and divine of Jesus. Jesus is the Son of God as foretold by prophets, worshipped by angels, shepherds and wise men. His conception and birth come about because of the obedience to God’s call of two people, Mary and Joseph. People need to renew or discover that the Bible is a good book to read. May we encourage you to look up the opening chapters of the Gospels of Luke and Matthew and, perhaps also, the Gospel of St John chapter 1 verses one to 18. Read for yourselves the origin of Jesus, Son of Man and Son of God. So important is this time of year for us that it marks the beginning of the Church’s year. Advent is our New Year beginning on Sunday, December 1st. A time of preparation with candles, calendars and extra services. We invite you to share with us the Church’s celebrations on this joyful occasion. Details of Christmas services can be found on page 56 of this magazine. God bless and a Happy Christmas from Nigel, Mike, Roger and John 62

Where Did We Go Wrong? It’s the privilege of those who have grown older to reminisce about harder, but better days; and the right of our youth to have a reason to hope for their future. However, neither group should leave it to others to make it happen, we all have a responsibility. Sadly, in almost every country we are witnessing political systems and law and order breaking down. In all ages and aspects of society there is a growing sense of fear and despair for our future. Many of our leaders appear incapable of truly listening to, and inspiring confidence and hope in those they lead. But we also have a responsibility not to be easily swayed by promises that have not been thought through or costed. As we approach Christmas, I cannot get away from the very clear message God gave to the world through the Angelic host on the day when Christ was born – ‘Peace on earth and goodwill to all humanity’. This message really does capture the heart of God. Almost every week I see people walk into my office experiencing anything but peace, then, as we work through the counselling sessions, I watch as fresh hope and peace begins to break through. The heart of God has never changed. No matter what confronts you today, God is waiting to bring you peace. You may not see bright lights or hear a heavenly choir, but as you truly reach out in your heart to him you will find the beginning of peace assuring you that God can take control if you let him. Join us on Sunday, December 22nd The Christmas Celebration at our church grows in popularity each year. There is something for every age group, dance, drama, puppets, children, youth, music, poetry and not to forget carols. Why not make plans to join us this year? Finance
December Financial Planning by Eamonn Dorling
Among the turmoil of recent and year-long investment uncertainty there are some interesting patterns that look set to continue into 2020. We have been reminded that a weak £ helps some businesses and hinders others. The logic being that a weak £ makes UK made products and services cheaper for other countries to buy (generally) therefore exports tend to be cheaper and more attractive. So, there can be winners and losers. On the other hand, if a business needs materials, spares or capital equipment from abroad it might cost more thus increasing prices or reducing profit margins. At the time of writing tariffs on imports and exports have not been discussed in detail, but they have the effect of adding ‘friction’ to trade agreements although the proceeds could potentially provide other benefits or even increase competition to UK business – it is seldom straightforward. Climate change has implications for businesses locally and nationally over the medium to long term, what implications will there be on your personal financial plans? Pension and Investment funds tend to invest across a wide range of enterprises in the pursuit of good returns, but investments can go down as well as up, especially in the short term. With all this ‘stuff’ going on, some pulling or pushing in opposite directions, it is even more important to have a plan. A good starting point is to ensure there are adequate ‘safety nets’ in place to financially protect you if things go wrong. Next is to be clear what you are earning
an income for or what you want to do with the income you are receiving. Next is to understand whether this will change and if so how. At this point we can begin to formulate a plan with numbers on it! To explore the possibilities – seek the services of an Independent Financial Adviser. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results and any forecast is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Indemnities may be required. Offers are not available in conjunction with any other offer and may be varied or withdrawn at any time. Accurate at time of publication. Freepost Volkswagen Financial Services. Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 and electric range figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. For more information, please see www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/wltp or consult your retailer. Data correct at 11/2019. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information. Official fuel consumption figures for the Volkswagen range model range in mpg (litres/100km): Combined 0 (0) – 217.3 (11.1). Combined CO2 emissions 0 – 205 g/ km.
