Introduction

Welcome to Your February Issue. Inside Highlights

A very warm welcome (unlike the weather!) to our February issue. It’s at times like this that it really hits me just how quickly time is flying – was it really four years ago that we were reminding our ladies that this is a “Leap Year” and yes, you can traditionally, this year on February 29th, get down on one knee and propose to your loved one? (Get ready fellas!!!) What’s more, this month we’ve got Valentine’s Day on February 14th where we can all stoke those romantic fires, so let’s ignore all the rain and gales out there and cosy up inside and enjoy this month’s collection of features, advertisements and ideas brought together for you by our wonderful team.

Claire x

Last February I wrote about how the Media was being dominated by the Brexit talks. Today I’m writing this column as we approach January 31st when Britain finally exits the European Union. Whether you have been a Remainer or a Brexiteer I’m sure most of you will be pleased the whole saga has come to an end and we can now concentrate on working together to help the country flourish over the coming months and years. Let’s hope that the future will bring increased prosperity to the Fens so that this and future generations can look forward to enjoying safe and successful lives. Having been born locally but also having travelled extensively over the length and breadth of the country and abroad, I know that people from this area have a lot to offer, both in terms of ability but also in community spirit. I urge everyone to work together to ensure 2020 is the start of something good… onwards and upwards!

February Gardening Tips It’s hard to believe that February heralds the end of the winter months and welcomes the beginning of spring! As I write this, we are yet to see any harsh winter weather, apart from the copious amounts of rain we witnessed in December. However, February can bring some harsh, cold conditions, but also the odd spring-like days, and hopefully you will find some time to complete any winter digging and preparing the beds ready for planting in the following months. Remove any weeds that have managed to grow and add manure or homemade compost to the soil, if you haven’t already done so, and then cover in black plastic, cloches or polytunnels, which will help warm up the soil. If you intend to grow leafy brassicas, such as kale, cabbages, cauliflowers etc, add lime to the soil a few weeks prior to planting and allow the rain to wash it into the soil, then before planting add some fish, blood and bone, raking it into the topsoil. Regards planting, the dilemma is whether to sow and plant early or wait until the weather is warmer and more reliable. It might be best to do a bit of both so you might have some earlier harvested veg. You could plant out some broad beans or peas if the ground isn’t frozen, protecting them with cloches if the weather is very cold, and garlic and shallot sets should be planted out this month. A good idea for sowing peas is to use lengths of plastic guttering: half fill them with good quality seed compost and sow the seeds about two inches apart, cover with compost, water and keep in a light spot under cover. Seeds that can be planted indoors or under cover; broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage, sprouting broccoli – to name but a few. It really is the last time you can winter prune fruit trees as they should still be dormant, any later and if it is mild, they will be starting to move into growth. As they are still dormant bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted and autumn fruiting raspberries pruned What could be tastier than a rhubarb crumble made with fresh pink rhubarb? If your rhubarb crowns show signs of activity, now is an excellent time to force an early sweet harvest by covering with a big bucket. All of your seed potatoes for the year should have been purchased by the end of this month and spread out in egg boxes or seed trays for “chitting” in a cool light room, it is recommended to remove all but three of the “chits” as it is believed that this produces larger potatoes. Other jobs for February include: • Remove any dead leaves from spread mould and mildew. • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year. • Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground barerooted fruit trees can still be planted but this will be your last opportunity • Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes • Winter prune currants, blackberries, hybrid berries, gooseberries • The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then recover it to keep it warm.

Happy gardening! 6

Steve can take the strain out of moving A new year often means people’s thoughts turn to moving to a new home, which can often be a stressful experience. So, what better way to help ease your way into your new home than by enlisting the help of a professional packer? Since setting up in business last year he has helped many families move home in the Cambridgeshire area.

He said: “I’ve been doing quite well since setting up my business. I can help them move to their new homes or pack their belongings to put into storage and promise to provide a professional service at a competitive price.” Steve can provide all materials within a free no obligation quote and has full liability insurance to guarantee a friendly, stress-free home packing experience so that everything is packed and ready to load into your van at a time that suits you, and is currently offering a 10 percent discount for OAP customers. CHANGE IS IN THE AIR – By Steve Barclay MP

The arrival of the new decade has been accompanied by a new Parliament, breaking free of the frustrating gridlock of recent years following the General Election. Parliament feels very different, in particular with a new Speaker and so many new faces on the green benches. There is clarity of purpose where before there was stalemate. As I write this at my desk in 9 Downing Street, home to the Department for Exiting the European Union, we know we will be leaving in a matter of days on January 31st. The legislation has been approved by the House of Commons. Job done for the teams of officials who support me and fellow Ministers. Rarely will occupants of Downing Street have left in such positive circumstances.

A new year is also the time we start up our planning in the constituency office for our annual Read to Succeed campaign. I loved reading as a child and see it as the gateway for local children to progress. It is a source of great pride that the Bishop of Ely, local councillors of different politics, and so many businesses and residents support our literacy scheme, and I will continue to work with local schools and libraries to deliver more books. A benefit of the General Election campaign was having more time at home after a busy year, which involved a lot of travel to European capitals as part of our negotiations. Our family dog seemed to enjoy the extra walks too! 2020 will bring new challenges and opportunities for us all. May I wish you a happy New Year, and a wonderful new decade.

Getting Brexit done has mattered to our constituency in particular as so many people locally supported leaving. I have always felt it was important that their vote was acted upon. Yet my own family had different views on Brexit as did so many others. So, a positive outcome for the new decade will be the ability for us all to move on, to other priorities, like improving local transport, investing in the NHS, and securing better sports and arts facilities in our area.

Matters SHARE YOUR VIEWS ON PLAN FOR FENLAND’S FUTURE

Investing in property and developing councilowned land to generate income and protect key services has been put at the heart of Fenland District Council’s plan to improve the quality of life for local communities. The launch of a commercial and investment strategy to meet future savings challenges is a key part of the council’s draft business plan 2020/21, which sets out the projects and services it will deliver across the district over the next 12 months. A project to transform the council’s customer services, utilising technology to enable residents to access services 24/7, is another fundamental element of the draft plan, which has been approved for public consultation by the council’s cabinet. Residents are now being urged to read the plan and take part in the consultation which runs until February 3rd. It asks for views on the plan as well as the council’s budget proposals, which explain how the authority will manage its finances. Cllr Chris Boden, leader of Fenland District Council, described the plan as “ambitious” in its aspirations to meet the needs and priorities of local people. He said: “Public sector austerity has now continued for over a decade. Since 2010, we have made savings of almost £10 million, and must make a further saving of £1.65 million by 2023/24. The challenge remains to deliver good quality services that our residents need and want, whilst investing in services and projects that help the district to grow.” He added: “Our plan affects everyone. That’s why it’s important for the people of Fenland to have their say and tell us if they agree with our proposed priorities. Their views will help us shape the final business plan and budget proposals which will be considered by cabinet and council on February 20th.”

COUNCIL UP FOR NATIONAL AWARD Fenland District Council is in the running for a prestigious national award recognising its multisector partnership approach to strengthening and supporting local communities. The council has been shortlisted in the coveted 2020 Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Awards, which celebrate the best of local government innovation and service delivery. A finalist in the community involvement category, the council has been recognised for its work with the diverse communities forum, a cross-sector partnership aimed at supporting local areas facing challenges linked with migration such as poor housing conditions, exploitation, language barriers and discrimination. Community involvement has been crucial in engaging hard-to-reach groups and delivering projects improving the quality of life for both current and future communities. Projects, funded with nearly £2.2 million of funding secured by Fenland District Council from the Government’s controlling migration fund since February 2017, have tackled migration challenges from all angles, focusing on enforcement, pastoral care, cohesion and integration as well as research to enable the DCF prepare and adapt to future needs. The local authorities shortlisted for awards will now complete presentations and interviews to a specific judging panel made up of senior and influential figures within local government. LGC editor Nick Golding said: “The councils that have been shortlisted for an LGC Award are among the most innovative – and their innovation helps provide the best services for residents, despite local government facing ongoing financial constraint. “The officers and councillors of shortlisted councils deserve enormous credit for thinking of new ways to deliver the best services, ensuring vital services thrive, benefiting everyone who uses them.” The winners of the LGC Awards will be announced at a ceremony on March 18th, 2020, at Grosvenor House, London.

WHITTLESEY EMERGENCY FOOD AID (WEFA) OVERWHELMED BY GENEROSITY The team at WEFA have thanked the many businesses, schools, shops, community groups, families and individuals for their overwhelming support in the run up to Christmas. The generous donations of food items, gifts and financial contributions enabled WEFA to provide up to fifty food hampers to those who would have otherwise struggled over the Christmas period. Special thanks go to the Whittlesey Round Table which funded the purchase of two brand new upright freezers enabling WEFA to store a greater variety of food. Marija Lysak, from WEFA, said: “Local people have been extremely generous and absolutely amazing, whilst we can’t mention everyone by name in this article, we say a huge thank you to them all.” A selection of those who contributed in some way were Jamie Keshwara, on behalf of the local Nisa stores who gave generous supplies of tinned and packet items for the Christmas Hampers, Sir Harry Smith Community College, Alderman Jacobs School, Slimming World (Whittlesey), Ladysmith W.I, McCain Foods, Smurfit Kappa, Gas Design Utilities Ltd, U3A, Manor Packaging (who gave the boxes for the hampers), S.R.P Produce Ltd, Whittlesey Table Tennis Club, Freemasons (Whittlesey division), Whittlesey Tangent group, and Deborah Slater who provided gifts to accompany the food hampers through her separate Christmas appeal. Brand new this year are the distinctive bright orange food donation containers that can now be found in both Nisa stores at Broad Street and Victory Avenue and the Co-op. Their vibrant colour and logo on the front means they are easily identifiable to anyone that wishes to donate any food items to WEFA. Items are collected regularly and distributed to those families and individuals experiencing food poverty in the Whittlesey catchment area. Alternatively, items can be brought directly to Whittlesey Christian Church. The purchase of the food containers was made possible by a grant from the Glassmoor Local Environment Fund which covered the entire cost of the project. If you would like to know more about WEFA please contact Brian or Marija at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street which is the storage, admin and distribution centre, on 01733 752093, email admin@whittlesey.cc or just pop in.

A Helping Hand Through Your Workplace Injury Claim BY NEIL JOHN, PARTNER, CIVIL LITIGATION

If you are injured at work, your injury is only one of the things you have to worry about. You may be concerned about being disloyal to your employer and may even be anxious about speaking to a solicitor because you are worried that once you do, you will be pressured into making a claim. Even if you aren’t sure about whether you will pursue a claim, there are certain things you can do after an injury which will make your life easier in case you decide to make a claim later. Straight after your injury, you should contact the first aider at your workplace for immediate treatment and you should also visit a doctor or hospital if necessary. Getting treatment for your injury should always be your primary concern. You should report the injury to your colleagues and manager so that any potential hazards can be made safe but also so that there is a record that the injury took place. As part of this process you should make sure that the incident is recorded in your workplace’s accidents book. If your employer won’t record your injury, you should make a written request. Having a copy of this in your personal email account’s sent items will be evidence that you have tried to report the accident. We recommend that you keep records of how your injury has affected you. This should include photographs of your injuries as well as a diary of pain and any ailments stemming from your injury. Keeping track of any expenses and losses caused by your injury is very helpful if you decide to pursue a claim. This can include loss of earnings, costs of care and much more. You should also be aware that you are only able to make a claim within three years of the accident or

within three years of your realisation that your injury is associated with your workplace. The latter is useful in the case of exposure to toxic substances which may not have immediate apparent effects. If you decide to make a claim, it can give you peace of mind to know someone with experience is on your side. Neil John, the personal injury specialist at Fraser Dawbarns, has more than 20 years’ experience handling claims ranging from an abattoir worker injured when half a pig carcass fell on them to injuries resulting from workplace assaults. Don’t Let Online Romancers Steal Your Heart - or Your Money! by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades WITH the most romantic day of the year just around the corner, Valentine’s Day is not just for those people who are already ‘coupled up’. An estimated seven million UK residents are registered on dating sites, and around one in three relationships in the UK now start online. However, while for many it may be romance and roses; for an increasing number of others it can spiral into heartbreak and financial misery. Romance fraud affects thousands of people; with women making up the majority of victims. According to Action Fraud, scammers swindled victims out of an average of £11,145 each during 2018. There are many local stories including one woman who lost everything, including her home (read the full story at the link below*). Fraudsters trick victims into sending money or gather enough personal information to steal their identities; resulting in an overall cost to victims of £50 million. The majority of accounts on dating websites are genuine people looking for romance, but fraudsters may try to contact you by making fake profiles, getting in touch and building what feels like a loving relationship. Once a fraudster using a fake dating profile is confident that they’ve won your trust, they will tell you about a problem they’re experiencing and ask you to help out by sending money. They may have arranged to visit you, but need money to pay for the flight or visa. They may tell you everything has been booked but their ticket has been stolen, and you need to send money quickly to get them on the next flight. Alternatively, they may prey on your sympathies, telling you a family member or someone else they are responsible for is ill and they need money for medical treatment. Once you send them money, the fraudsters will keep coming back and invent new reasons to send them more. There are a few simple steps to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe from fraudsters who often target the vulnerable, the lonely or recently widowed or divorced. D - Don’t rush into an online relationship. Get to know the person, not the profile, ensuring you ask plenty of questions. A - Analyse their profile. Protect yourself by confirming their identity. Check the person is genuine by putting the following into your search engine: their name, profile picture (by simply using a reverse image search) and any repeatedly used phrases, along with the term ‘dating scam’. T - Talk to your friends and family. Be wary of anyone who tells you not to tell others about them. E - Evade scams. Never send money or share your bank details with someone you’ve only met online. S - Stay on the dating site messenger service. Fraudsters will often encourage their victims to use different communications channels that are often undetectable. * Read Carol’s story at https://cambridgeshireinsight.org. uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Carols-story.pdf FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 0

Group Spotlight

Friendship, Fun and Games

W

hen Margaret Herstell was widowed nearly ten years ago, she sought a club where she could meet other older people and perhaps make new friends, but nothing was available. Following some conversations at her church, she set up the Friendship Club for the over fifties that has been meeting at the Methodist and United Reform Church in Queen Street on Saturday afternoons from 2pm until 4pm ever since. The group meets every Saturday except at Straw Bear weekend. There is no limit to the size of the membership, and often more than fifty people attend. Various activities take place, including games like cards, dominoes, and Rummiku, crosswords are done, there is a knit and natter table and crafts are also available. Sometimes the group holds a quiz, and every month there is a raffle where everyone receives a prize. Speakers are invited to give a short talk on a subject of interest. The essential tea and coffee with cakes are served half-way through, all for just £1 per session. Fish and chip lunches are arranged, and in the summer months day trips to places of interest take place. In the winter trips to popular Christmas markets are put on and each year the club has a Christmas party, 26

with the usual seasonal fare and activities. There is plenty going on and something to suit most people. Each year in August the club hosts 'holidays at home', the club puts on activities and outings with lunches over three days, which is supported by Churches Together. It is a great way to help people get out and about and socialise when otherwise they may be alone all day. The club is also an active fund raiser for various charities, each session there are tables where books and bits and bobs can be had for a donation, the proceeds going to Air Ambulance and First Responders. Each year it also participates in the nationwide Macmillan Cancer Care coffee morning scheme, last year raising a total of £800 after also having some auctions prior to the event itself. Over the years the Friendship Club has also contributed to other good causes and continues to benefit the local community. There is a seven-person committee, but Margaret and secretary, treasurer, and dogsbody (her description) Lyn Wright do most to keep the whole thing going. The membership is made up of singles, couples, halves of couples, and is open to anyone aged over fifty. Many friendships have been made over the years with people meeting up outside of the club days. it is sensitive to people with early onset dementia and caters for the disabled. There is a welcoming atmosphere that will put anyone at ease. For more information call Lyn on 01733 701628. FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 0

Finance

Using Pensions To Fund Retirement by Eamonn Dorling

There are two basic types of pension – defined benefit (sometimes called final salary), and defined contributions (money purchase). The former is usually less risky and more generous, and this month I am considering the more common type (money purchase) where you accumulate as much as possible then decide what to do with it when retirement beckons. Contributing to a pension during a working career makes good sense because of the tax advantages, if an employer contributes also – even better, and if the investment fund is well selected the eventual fund available for later life may provide several options. Flexible access Under current legislation an individual is no longer forced along the annuity route where your pot of money buys a pension for the rest of your life (sometimes with the option of a spouse’s benefit). There are situations where this could be the best option, but many people like to consider other options. Twenty-five percent of the fund can be taken tax free in most circumstances. The remaining fund may also be taken or a combination of income and a lump sum. If a large taxable lump sum is taken, the tax implications can be eye wateringly expensive. A better plan might be to take what you actually need rather than what you would like – this can utilise tax thresholds much more efficiently and may be spread over a number of tax years. The problem is that some providers of pensions do not allow the flexibility required to plan properly – so the plan (or plans) need to be moved to an arrangement that can deliver

your requirements. There is also a consideration regarding death benefits, I have seen plans that only refund the employee’s own contributions rather than the total fund value to a surviving spouse – a better arrangement would return the entire fund tax free. Another consideration might be the passing on of any unused fund value to further generations – this is possible in some arrangements but not in others. My message this month is: If you are struggling to understand how your finances will pan out in retirement – speak with a specialist independent financial adviser. Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results and any forecast is not a reliable indicator of future performance. During your first visit the BAcC acupuncturist needs to gain a thorough understanding of your main complaint and your general health and lifestyle.

Acupuncture Can Help With Your Health...

T

This will involve asking questions about your current symptoms and your medical history as well as such things as your sleeping pattern, your appetite and digestion, and your emotional wellbeing.

he British Acupuncture Council says there are more than thirty different health conditions which acupuncture can help with including acne, depression, eczema and osteoarthritis.

And the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) now recommends acupuncture through the NHS for chronic lower back pain. Toni Wilkes, who trained at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading where she gained a BSc (Hons), is an expert in the practice.

You may feel that some questions are unrelated to your condition but the information you give will help form a more complete picture of your health and lifestyle. Each patient is unique and two people with the same diagnosis may well receive different acupuncture treatments. For more information contact Toni at Elegance Beauty Salon, Dartford Road, March on 01354 653408.

Using subtle diagnostic techniques that have been developed and refined for centuries, such as pulse taking and tongue examination among others, acupuncture seeks to focus on the individual as a whole, not the isolated symptoms of a person’s illness and all manifested symptoms are seen in relation to each other.

Everyone Health – Delivering NHS Health Checks in Your Community What is an NHS Health Check?

T

he NHS Health Check is a national programme offering a health check-up every five years to adults in England aged 40 to 74 without a pre-existing cardiovascular condition. One of the largest prevention programmes of its type in the world, it is designed to help prevent and detect early signs of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes and dementia. As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing one of these conditions. An NHS Health Check helps find ways to lower the risk. If you are in the 40-74 age group without a preexisting condition, you should have an NHS Health Check every five years.

confirmed and it was agreed he would return after three months to see if the changes in lifestyle he was implementing would improve his results enough to avoid medication. Andy returned after three months to find his GP happy as he confirmed his cholesterol had reduced to a healthier level and he had lost 9.1kg, meaning he would not need medication – just to continue with what he was doing! Andy said: “Everyone Health provided a very beneficial and good service, a worthwhile visit that has turned things around for me.” How can you get involved? You can make an appointment for your NHS Health Check by: Tel: 03330 050093 Email: eh.changepointcambs@nhs.net www.everyonehealth.co.uk/cambs

Everyone Health delivers these important checks in local community clinics across Cambridgeshire, you will find us in libraries, community centres, at local events, church halls, pop-up shops in town centres – we also deliver in workplaces. The check takes about 20-30 minutes. You will meet with a trained professional who will check your blood pressure and cholesterol, they will record your height, weight, age, gender and ethnicity. You’ll also be asked some simple questions about your family history and choices that may put your health at risk. Once you’ve had your NHS Health Check, your results will be discussed with you and you’ll be given personalised advice on how to maintain or improve your health which will help you lower your risk of developing any of the conditions screened for. Andy H, who had an NHS Health Check at our Pop-up Shop in Huntingdon earlier this year, was informed his cholesterol was high and would need to visit his GP for discussion and medical advice about how this could affect him. Andy also took advice away with him from the Everyone Health practitioner about changes he could implement in the meantime to improve his health & lifestyle. At the GP appointment after a further blood test Andy’s results from the NHS Health Check were 38

Gorka’s flair for dancing started from a very young age. Originally from Bilbao, Spain, he attended Ballroom and Latin dance classes from the age of eleven. Gorka has continuously displayed outstanding talent and charisma in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 series. His debut saw him paired with EastEnders star, Tameka Empson. Whittlesey Dental Care

How does a Dental Implant work? A dental implant is an artificial root made of titanium to which a fabricated crown, bridge or denture is attached. When a missing tooth is replaced with an implant the bone actually grows around the implant (osseointegration) making a strong foundation for a restoration. This way a replacement tooth can function like a real tooth making it easier to eat, talk and smile with confidence.

Implant procedure Before the treatment begins adequate anaesthetic is given to make the procedure comfortable for you. The bone is then drilled to accept the implant, the implant is then placed in the bone and a healing cap is then attached. After this phase of the procedure the bone is then fused to the implant. Once the implant is integrated with bone the healing cap is then replaced with abutment which sits above the gum line. Whether you are getting an implant to replace a single tooth or

multiple implants for a bridge or to support a denture, dental implants have a natural feel and function offering you a long term solution for missing teeth.

Implant Supported Denture Having loose dentures can be embarrassing and uncomfortable. An implant supported denture ensures the denture is stabilised. An implant is an artificial root made of titanium that fuses to the bone enabling the denture to be held in place.

Types of Implant Supported Dentures Removable: can be removed for cleaning and are available in different styles – bar retained or ball retained, or locator retained. Fixed: screw fixed dentures – only removed by a dentist. For more information please ring the surgery to arrange a free consultation with Dr. Gali.

Top Reasons to Book Your Holiday Early

By Ellie Cuthbert

Marketing & Admin Assistant

As the festive season has come to an end and the winter weather is well and truly upon us, now is the time to visualise yourself unwinding on a sandy cove, discovering exotic cultures or exploring spectacular landmarks. There are several reasons for why the start of the new year is the perfect time to book your next getaway. Here are just a few… • With high demands for booking a family break in the school holidays, booking early is the best way to grab your getaway before prices rise. You’ll also get the best chance of enjoying free child places and low deposits, with the best pick of the hotels and destinations on offer. • Booking early means more choice. Be first in line and have your trip tailored to your needs, getting first dibs on your destination, room type, flight times and departure airports. If you’re planning a family break, then it may be trickier to get exactly what everyone wants from a holiday if you don’t leave time to tick off everyone’s requirements. The more time you have to find the perfect accommodation and plan your itinerary, the more likely you are to please the whole family. What’s more, tickets for excursion trips are limited so the sooner you nab your spot, the better.

• Booking just after Christmas doesn’t have to break the bank. Many of our tour operators offer lower priced deposits at the start of the year, meaning you only have to worry about paying a small deposit up front, allowing you to settle the balance at a later date. January/February is also the time to grab the best deals with fantastic savings for your next getaway. Why not kick your year off with something to look forward to? Being independent we can package together anything you desire worldwide, dealing with a wide range of suppliers. All our staff have extensive experience in travel and have worked on our high street for many years. Let us do the hard work for you; we search thousands of low-cost flights, hotels and transfers to ensure you receive the best holiday at the best price, and we aim to beat any high street or online quote. Get in touch with the team today, we’re open seven days a week in January. For your chance to WIN a seven-night cruise, visit www.holidaywithus.co.uk.

Treat your Loved One to a Relaxing Therapy this Valentine’s Day

W

hat better way to show you care than to give a gift that will make your loved one feel wonderful! Treat your loved one to a relaxing reflexology treatment, or one of our many types of massage therapy this year for Valentine’s Day.

These treatments are the perfect way to balance the demands of a busy life, to aid relaxation and improve well-being. They are also great for stress relief. Reflexology is a non-invasive, natural, relaxing and enjoyable form of pressure therapy which is great for everyone. It involves massage and compression being applied to the reflex points on your feet, hands or face. These points make up a mini-map of the whole of your body including each organ, gland and body part. During reflexology you can tell exactly which reflex points feel out of balance and which parts of your body they relate to. The point of the treatment is to tease out blockages, thus returning your body to its optimum condition.

mobility; it can dramatically reduce stress and ease tension. Massage can help to reduce headaches/ migraines, cramps and spasms, and massage is also said to improve the immune system. We offer Aromatherapy massage, which uses organic essential oils, and Swedish massage, which blends various techniques, to address the specific needs of the client. Sports massage therapy is used to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. Plus, where minor injuries and lesions occur, due to overexertion and/or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively.

We offer a wide range of massage therapies that involve the systematic and manual manipulation of the body’s soft tissue for therapeutic purposes, promoting health and well-being.

Pregnancy massage is available after the first trimester; it can help to reduce anxiety, back and leg pain, improve sleep, and decrease the levels of the stress hormones. Regular massage sessions throughout pregnancy are a great way to relieve these problematic physical symptoms of pregnancy.

The benefits of massage include improved circulation to the massaged area and stimulated muscles. This can help to improve flexibility and

Pets’ Corner

The Importance of Preventative Care by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

We all want our pets to be healthy and happy and to enjoy a good quality of life. By having regular health check-ups, you will be doing everything you can to ensure this, even if you feel your pet is well, helping to reduce the chances of disease or illness. Sometimes something small may be picked up before it becomes a bigger problem making it easier to treat successfully. Most pets will have a yearly physical examination when they have their vaccinations, but we also recommend at least another check-up during the year. Examination of their eyes, ears, mouth, teeth, skin and coat etc. can tell us a lot about your pet’s health. Advice can also be given on how you can prevent future problems occurring, e.g. looking after their teeth, keeping them at a healthy bodyweight, providing them with the correct amount of exercise, treating them for parasites and keeping their claws in good health. Whittlesey Veterinary Centre now offers a Pet Health Plan, allowing you to provide your pet with the preventative care they require at a reduced cost, plus an added bonus of being able to spread the cost. By joining our new Pet Health Plan your pet will benefit from preventative treatments and services at discounted prices that are payable via a monthly direct debit, spreading the costs over the year for you. 52

This Month: Words or Music by Dave Bailey

aving mastered the techniques of tuning, finger placement for chord patterns, strumming, plucking and rhythm, it may be time for the creative juices to flow. The writing process, whether just a solo instrumental piece or a full blown multi track chart contender, usually involves some structured thinking and multiple rework of phrases and riffs. It is rare for any composer to sit down and complete a song in a single take and some songs may even sit on the back burner waiting for additional inspiration for weeks. The age-old question that performers of original music are always asked by friends and during interviews ‘What comes first the words or the music?’ is a reminder of how complex and often spontaneous the process can be. Inspiration for new work can be triggered by so many different and often obscure actions, situations, things people have said and even sounds or mechanical rhythms we hear, and most times do not consciously associate with the finished product. During a song writing club that used to run in the town we were introduced to a process that involves using three periods of concentration where you write things that come to mind based on a set of given topics. Then using word association provide a subsequent list of words to form building

56

blocks for verse structure. During the silence all I could hear was the sound of a ticking clock and after the session wrote a new song with a clock tick tock as the rhythmic driver for the track and lyrics based on the passing of time. Whilst the purists will tell you all songs have a structure of intro followed by verse, chorus and outro with repetitions of verse/chorus and possibly a middle eight or lead break and bridge, there are no rules and many of the classic pop tracks fall well outside the constricts of the norm. If you want people to remember your work, there are tools which will make the song more memorable. A chorus which repeats, a phrase or repeating hook or riff which sticks in the mind for touring and gigging musicians, this can become a crowd pleaser especially for regulars who sing along with your performance and a reason to return for the next gig. However you write and regardless of style, always record ideas on some form of device even if it’s the voice recorder on your phone. If it’s a sentence or a quote that somebody said to you jot it down. If you get a tune or melody that keeps repeating in your head (unless it’s a current chart track) hum it into the phone. Some of the best ideas you may have at the time can be lost as the memory of the occasion fades. Keep writing and we may see or hear you at the next gig or open mic… Local open mic listings can be found at: www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 0

The Whittlesea Society was formed about forty years ago with the aim to take interest in the conservation of the town and surrounding areas. Planning applications, alterations, new buildings and developments are discussed, and members of the society are consulted by councillors and The Civic Group of Fenland District Council. There is always a speaker and the topics are varied but mainly cover social history. At the January meeting, local auctioneer Lawrence Seaton spoke about being an auctioneer and tested the group’s knowledge of antiques. The speaker for February is Don Chiswell, who will talk about William Shakespeare, while March will feature Revd David Bond who will tell the group about 'War memorials'. The group meets at the Town Hall, Market Street on the second Monday of each month at 7.30pm and new members are welcome. There is a small membership fee and it is £2 for visitors.

LADYSMITH W.I. IS FULL OF IDEAS FOR 2020

Whittlesey Ladysmith W. I’s January annual meeting saw a committee appointed full of ideas and enthusiasm for 2020 and members enjoyed a fish and chip supper.

The next meeting is set for Tuesday, February 11th at 7.30pm in St. Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane. Sue Drew will be crafting crepe roses and will bring everything needed for members and guests to make their own on the night. The monthly competition is something ‘paper’. Newcomers are very welcome. More information from Sue on 01733 205927 or Liz on 0798 2854872.

MEMBERS ENJOY ANNUAL MEAL Coates W.I. did not hold a meeting in January but members enjoyed their annual meal, which was held at The Black Bull, Whittlesey. The new year starts in February and will feature Dee Chalk. The topic is ‘cupcakes with a difference’ and the competition is ‘favourite colour’. There will be a make-up demonstration by Evi Giakuomi in March. Guests and new members are always welcome. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month (no meeting in January) at Coates Village Hall at 7.30pm. More information from Fiona on 01733 208516 or Jen on 01733 840376. 58

Love is in the Air... TRY NOT TO BREATHE! By Holly Jean

V

alentine’s Day. You all came to my article hoping that it wouldn’t be about the dreaded Valentine’s Day... well guess what?

Yes, you’ve got it, it’s that time of the year when some people are excitedly browsing their local high street, looking for the perfect gift to get their significant other, some people are hitting the pubs, hard. Some ignore the whole event, some embrace it! I don’t know if you can tell the type of person I am just by reading this? I used to feel very differently about Valentine’s Day. Mainly because up until I was about fifteen, I had never had a Valentine, I was a little bit chubby and I’ll be honest, a bit weird! But that’s fine, we get there in the end. Nevertheless, at the time I was cynical and sarcastic about the whole thing that was ‘love’. My family are still very pleased to let my boyfriend know that I was once quoted, years ago, saying that if I ever received roses from a boy, then I would proceed to shove them somewhere... sideways. Looking back, I’m still not sure as to why

62

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

I was so angry! Also, my boyfriend is very pleased that I changed my mind. So anyway! Valentine’s Day! Probably the most hated time in the calendar. And I get it! It’s overly commercialised. It’s a bit over the top. But, at the end of the day, it’s all good fun, isn’t it? And, if you hate it so much that it’s making you miserable, picture this and we’ll see if it makes you smile. It’s February 13th, 8 pm. You’re ‘people watching’. Seeing all the panicked boyfriends and fiancés run around the shops, not husbands Valentine’s traditions seemingly die when vows are taken – looking for a lady who ‘looks like the size of my girlfriend’. The Pandora store is heaving. All the florists are trying to swim their way through the sea of red roses in their shops. Everyone that isn’t fussed about Valentine’s Day is doing the inevitable, drowning their sorrows in the pub. In all seriousness, Valentine’s Day really isn’t that bad if you just embrace it! Tell everyone you love them, eat all of the chocolate and just have a great time. And, if all else fails, I’ll see you at the pub? We fall in love by chance, we stay in love by choice.

Our Relationship with God In Jesus Soon Lent will be with us and the chance to look at ourselves and our relationship with God in Jesus. On Ash Wednesday, February 26th, we begin Lent in all seriousness with services that include being crossed on the forehead with ash made from burning last year’s palm crosses. This practice reminds us of our sinfulness and need of God’s grace. Our services are at 9.15am at Holy Trinity Coates and at 7.30pm at St Mary’s where we will be

joined by the congregation from the Queen Street Chapel. Everyone is welcome. During Lent we are involved in Lenten Discussion groups with the local Churches Together Group. There are several groups in the town, Coates and Pondersbridge. Details can be found in the churches. On Fridays at noon we will have the Stations of the Cross at St Mary’s. This is a Lenten Devotion we share with St Jude’s church and the Catholic Tradition. Fourteen pictures which follow Jesus’ journey from his trial to his crucifixion are placed around the church and provide the stopping points for thought and prayer. We are encouraged to accompany Jesus on his final journey. Let us pray for each other that this will be a blessed Lent – a time for Jesus to inspire us by his story, strengthen us by His grace and bless us with His love. May God bless you all. Revd Nigel

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Is Human Need Important To God? An important aspect of church structure is getting and keeping a healthy balance between the spiritual and natural needs of humanity. Then to inspire the congregation to be fully behind that balance. As new people choose to become a part of our family, they very quickly become aware of the importance our church places on maintaining this balance. We should not close our heart to genuine community need, just as we should not be placed in a position of compromising our responsibility to help people see the importance of filling the spiritual need in their lives. Why is our church so involved in community engagement? Psalm 46 v 1; Two beautiful Hebrew words reveal God’s caring heart for human need.

You will also be made very welcome at our uplifting meetings any Sunday morning at 10.45am. If you’re 50+ there is ‘Pastime every Wednesday 10am12pm. Also, Mums & Tots Tuesday and Thursday (please telephone for times). Free experienced counselling is also available. Free health event for ladies As part of our ‘Serving Community Need’ our Ladies Monthly meeting has organised a health evening starting at 7pm on Friday, February 28th. Short presentations are planned on such topics as cervical screening, breast cancer awareness. Mental health awareness and other topics awaiting confirmation. Health professionals will be on hand afterwards, along with free helpful literature. All ladies are welcome to attend this free event.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Brian Smithyman (Pastor of Whittlesey Christian Church, Broad Street)

A very present help – One meaning of this is ‘to discover or find out’. Another is ‘to have or be enough’; In trouble – It refers to ‘Unfavourable circumstances causing emotional pain’.

Further enquiries from the Church Office 01733 752093

If we let him, God will prove to us that his help is more than enough when we go through difficult times.

RECYCLING VOLUNTEERS LAUNCH NEW WEBSITE Recycling champions in Fenland are helping to make recycling easier than ever with the launch of a new ‘what goes where’ website. Fenland District Council’s Getting It Sorted recycling volunteers have launched their own website – www.gettingitsorted.org – thanks to grant funding from local wind farm developments. The website has been designed to help people with their recycling, with a quick and simple search tool to illustrate what goes where and tips on how you can reduce or reuse your waste. It’s particularly useful to identify whether more complex items are recyclable such as disposable coffee cups, bubble wrap and electricals. The Getting It Sorted volunteers have also set up their own Facebook page to raise further awareness of recycling – just search for ‘Getting It Sorted Volunteers’. Interested in becoming a recycling volunteer? Find out more about at: www.fenland.gov.uk/volunteers and purchased prior to the evening. FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 0

Scout jamborees are very popular. A jamboree is an international camp and every four years the World Scout Jamboree takes place. This year Whittlesey had the honour of four of its Explorer scouts attend the World Jamboree in West Virginia in the USA. They, along with 50,000 scouts from nearly every country in the world, enjoyed three weeks including visiting New York, Washington and Canada. The rest of the group attended the County International Jamboree at Huntingdon Racecourse. Other highlights of the year were parading and carrying the festival banner at the Whittlesey Festival and the group camp at Holt Island in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, where they had the opportunity to take part in canoeing, archery, and cooking on fires. Other activities involved visiting Ferry Meadows in Peterborough to do some sailing. The group was also very proud to attend the Remembrance Parade, selling poppies for the Royal British Legion and laying a wreath at the War Memorial. 1st Whittlesey Scout Group still has places available in all sections including adult helpers.
