Introduction
Welcome to Your April Issue. Inside Highlights
Welcome to our April edition and I’m astonished at just how quickly, within a few weeks, we’ve moved on from those cold, dark mornings, all that rain and all of those gales … and a welcome “bye-bye to Brexit!” Blossom and blooms are here, and summer is nearly upon us. And yet... to quote a good old Lincolnshire saying, “There’s ollus summat, mee-at!” and that something has certainly arrived with a vengeance. As we all try and come to terms with the Coronavirus pandemic, (with self-isolation, working from home, university shut-downs, total absence of sport, panic buying and gloomy economic prospects all round), it’s increasingly difficult to “Keep Calm and Carry On!” (as we Brits are often advised to do). Let me add my own words of encouragement to you all, hoping that our issue will bring some light to the darkness and keep you informed and entertained, as we come together to celebrate a happy, and hopefully healthy, Easter.
Claire x
This month I had intended to focus on some of the major events that were due to take place in the Whittlesey area over the coming weeks as we enter spring. However, as you are all well aware the country is in the grip of the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic and sadly many events have had to be called off. In this issue we have details of some of the cancellations, (but if you are planning to attend an activity this month please check that it is still going ahead) and also advice on how to cope during the current crisis. Plus, there are also details on how you can offer your help to those who need assistance during these troubled times. Now more than ever it is time for the local community to stick together and here at Discovering Whittlesea we are doing our best to keep up your spirits by bringing you another issue packed with the regular articles we know you enjoy reading each month. Finally, on behalf of the magazine, I would like to take this opportunity to wish regular contributor Rev Nigel Whitehouse the best of luck as leaves Whittlesey after seventeen years to become vicar of Upwell and Outwell. We would like to wish him and Jo every happiness in the future…

Beauty
Why you should hire a make-up artist for your wedding day... by Lauren Siddons
You have bought the perfect wedding dress and booked the ideal venue. You’re planning the party of the century but don’t forget about yourself. Hiring a make-up artist may seem like an ‘extra’ expense. However, if you pay for a lesson and then buy all the make-up on top of that (that you probably won’t use again) in an attempt to do a DIY make-up job, then it may well be cheaper to hire an artist. Here are my top reasons for booking a make-up artist for your wedding day: Be stress free on your big day Everyone is bound to get a little nervous while getting ready for their wedding day and trying to apply a top quality make-up application that looks not only flawless in person, but in pictures as well is a hard job to tackle but this is where having a professional comes in handy. An on-location make-up artist will come to your location of choice and create an environment where you will feel totally relaxed. Make-up tricks to help you look your best A properly trained artist will know how to highlight your best features, whether it’s your flawless skin, high cheekbones, kissable lips or sparkling eyes. They also know how to camouflage and cover up techniques to adequately conceal the flaws in your skin without caking on tons of products. Make-up artists know how to choose the colours best for you and your unique colouring and are equipped with the proper tools and knowledge needed to bring out your best features for your wedding day. Be camera ready As a make-up artist, myself, I keep my kit stocked with make-up designed to look amazing when photographed. Experienced make-up artists will sculpt your face using contouring techniques to add the illusion of depth in two dimensional
photographs and in real life. Professionally done wedding make-up will guarantee you looking beautiful under any light. Long lasting wear When you a hire a make-up artist you won’t have to worry about your make-up wearing off during your entire wedding day. By utilising specialised products such as primers, setting sprays and powders, make-up artists will give you a long lasting make-up look. No one is left out As well as pampering you, an artist can create a unique, yet universal look for your whole bridal party. A good artist will manage some sort of schedule for the morning of your wedding day to ensure everyone is ready in plenty of time. You are worth it You will be looking at your wedding photographs for the rest of your life so hire someone who specialises in make-up for photography. A professional make-up artist makes it his or her job to make sure that the bride is the most important face of the day!

Where’s The Snag? A Guide To New Build Surveys BY HELEN JARVIS, PARTNER, RESIDENTIAL CONVEYANCING
When buying a property, a building survey can pick up issues that can affect the value of the property. A survey can bring up issues that the buyer can ask the seller to fix before completion or to otherwise reduce the selling price accordingly. We always strongly recommend that buyers have a survey. We have heard horror stories from buyers who decided against a survey, only to spend several thousand pounds within a few months of moving in, repairing problems that a survey would have flagged. Surveys will pick up issues ranging from slipped roof tiles or missing flashing all the way up to larger problems such as damp or subsidence. As these issues tend to be associated with older properties, people buying new build properties are less likely to commission a survey. A special type of survey for new build properties does exist and it can potentially save you money down the line. Rather than looking for signs of wear, the survey, known as a New Build Survey or New Build Snagging Survey, checks whether the property has been built to a high enough standard. People buy new builds on the expectation that everything will be in good condition and built to the latest specifications. You wouldn’t expect the roof to leak or to have issues that can come with older wiring or plumbing. On top of this, most buyers expect to be protected by their warranty. A traditional survey can be excessive on a new build property, where the most common problems are cosmetic, such as plastering, tiling and brickwork. A new build can, however, have more serious problems that relate to damp-proofing, ventilation or insulation. These issues can include badly fitted windows, damp proof courses that have been bridged as well as drainage and waste pipes that are not connected. The best time to have a snagging survey done is after the builder has completed the work and before moving
in. However, some developers don’t allow a survey before completion. In this case you should arrange for a survey as soon as you have moved in. Although it depends on the terms of your contract, you can have up to two years to report issues found on a new build home, but it is advantageous to report any issues early while the builders are still on site. If you leave the survey until after the builders have moved on, it may take longer to get the repairs completed. You should also be wary of relying on a warranty too much, many buyers report difficulties in getting a claim to stick and the cover is more limited than many people expect. A snagging survey will usually result in a faster resolution of your issues. The residential conveyancing department at Fraser Dawbarns has helped thousands of people into their new homes, providing friendly advice and support throughout the process. If you would like help with buying or selling your home or with any other legal issue, please contact Fraser Dawbarns today.

History
The Whittlesey Dredger
T
by Peter Wright, Historian, The B17 Steam Locomotive Trust
he lower reaches of the River Nene, between Guyhirn and Whittlesey, had silted up so much that it had become merely a dyke and only sufficiently wide to allow a barge through.
The four drainage boards responsible for this waterway purchased a large new dredger from Ruston and Hornsby of Lincoln. It was a modern machine on caterpillar tracks weighing forty-four tons, driven by a 50hp engine and controlled by one man. It could dredge a river fifty-foot wide and was guaranteed to excavate 60cu. yds. of spoil per hour. It was transported by rail from Lincoln to Whittlesey in sections and assembled in the station yard where it was photographed for the local newspaper. The dredger left Whittlesey by road on Thursday, December 20th, 1923. In places, the Post Office had to temporarily remove overhead wires to allow it to pass. At Eldernel the bridge over Moreton's Leam was not sufficiently strong to allow it to pass, so despite there being four feet of water the machine was able to ford the river. However, it then became stuck and had to be abandoned. 10
D I S C O V E R I N G
Whittlesea
Before it could be recovered, the wash was flooded and a subsequent photograph showed it marooned, with only its cab top and jib visible above the water. After the floods subsided, the dredger was able to move again under its own power to the river about two-and-a-half miles away. It reached a position about five miles below the ‘Dog in a Doublet’ towards the end of February and began widening the river to about fifty feet. Work was provided for one hundred and fifty men levelling the excavated material. Under test, over several hours the dredger proved capable of moving three times the guaranteed amount of spoil. The scheme was overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture (Land Drainage Department) whose engineer was Major R G Clark, of March. “Fenland District Council is aware of the significant anxiety that exists within the minds of our older people and across our business community. “The council is committed to playing a full part to ensure that our older and most vulnerable residents receive the support required to protect them from the impact of COVID-19. This includes the following: • A database of the over 70s and an assessment of people’s needs • Supporting the establishment of the Cambridgeshire County Council-led volunteer hub
COUNCIL TAKES ACTION OVER CORONAVIRUS CRISIS
• Liaising closely with town and parish councils, community and voluntary groups and other key partners, such as the county council, to mobilise district wide volunteering capacity
Fenland District Council is working to ensure that key services will continue during the current coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis.
• A social-distancing hotline that will be provided through the council’s contact centre to help signpost people to the local support available
Council leader Cllr Chris Boden said in a statement on March 19th: “The council has quickly mobilised its business continuity arrangements in preparedness to deal with COVID-19. These plans will ensure that key services will continue to function with a minimum amount of disruption. The council is also ensuring that government and Public Health England (PHE) advice is readily available to all.
“Fenland’s local economy and our cherished businesses are starting to see the impact of COVID-19. Earlier this week the Chancellor announced a comprehensive package of support to assist businesses through these difficult times. This included business rates holiday periods, business grants and loans, along with the hardship fund. The council is already implementing the business rates relief measures and is eagerly awaiting government guidance to ensure the other means of support are quickly made available.
“In such uncertain times frequent communication is vital. The council is sending out regular updates to its employees and elected members along with informative press releases to the public. The council’s website and social media outlets are being refreshed daily. “Our workforce continues to provide excellent services to residents and businesses through this difficult time. In order to support their continued contribution measures such as remote and flexible working, hand sanitisers and protective equipment is being made available where necessary. These measures will help to provide the ongoing resilience required to ensure that key services continue to function.
“These are unprecedented times and the impact of COVID-19 is profound, however, working as one unified member and officer team this council will do everything in its powers to positively respond to the Government’s call to arms in providing every possible support to our communities, their residents, and our highly valued local businesses.”
“Whilst the council will do everything within its powers to minimise the disruption associated with COVID-19 there is the potential for some impact. Where this may occur, both our members and residents will be kept fully updated. 12

Fears over the coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic have unfortunately led to a number of local events to be cancelled. Many Whittlesey residents make an annual visit to the St George’s Fayre, which was due to be held in March on Sunday, April 26th, and this is a notable casualty, as is the March Summer Festival, which was due to be held in June. Organised by Fenland District Council and a committee of volunteers, St George’s Fayre usually attracts thousands of people to the town every year. Cllr Peter Murphy, the council’s cabinet member responsible for events, said: “St George’s Fayre is a highlight in the calendar for many, so it is with deep regret that is has had to be cancelled. We realise this will be a great disappointment to the thousands who usually attend, and to our loyal stall holders, but it is necessary in these unprecedented circumstances. “I’d like to thank the events staff and the committee for all the hard work they have put into this year’s event, and we look forward to it returning next year.” Meanwhile MADAOS – a group which performs pantomimes, concerts and musicals in March – has had to cancel its performance of ‘9 to 5 the Musical’ which was due to be held at the MCC, Station Road, March, on April 15th-18th. The show has been called off because the venue is unable to allow the group to perform. Ticket Source, which arranges bookings for the shows, will be in contact with people who have already bought tickets. The City of Peterborough Concert Band and Harlow Concert Band’s concert of "Sci-Fi and Fantasy" classics scheduled for Saturday, May 2nd at St Andrews Church, Ledbury Road, Netherton, Peterborough, PE3 9RF will also not now be held. Finally, the 6.5k Walk to Remember, which was due to return for a third year to raise vital funds for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in Peterborough and planned for Sunday, May 17th, has been postponed. For more information visit www.sueryder.org/ walktoremember Further events are likely to become casualties of the coronavirus, so please contact the relevant organisations for the latest updates.

LANDLORDS TAKE PART IN ‘QUESTION TIME’ Landlords got the chance to ask questions of a panel of experts at another successful landlord event organised by Fenland District Council. Professionals from the Council’s private sector housing and planning services, Fraser Dawbarns solicitors, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service and the bailiff service were on hand to provide answers during a lively and informative ‘Question Time’ session. The event, held at the Boathouse Business Centre in Wisbech, was the latest in a series of landlord evenings organised by the council – with more than thirty landlords attending.
IT’S TIME TO GET STRIMMING Parks and open spaces the equivalent size of three thousand football pitches will be cut, strimmed and trimmed this year, as Fenland District Council’s annual grass cutting programme gets underway. The wettest February on record means there may be a delay in mowing some of the larger green spaces across Fenland, as they remain too waterlogged to be cut. But Tivoli, the council’s grounds maintenance contractor, is ready to “hit the ground running”, carrying out what it can to get the district looking shipshape in time for summer. During the cutting season, which runs right through to November, teams will cut and maintain more than one million square metres of grass.
Delegates also received legislative updates from the National Landlords Association, and were provided information on the council’s wide range of private rented sector services. They also found out more about the council’s new enforcement approach to tackle the minority of rogue landlords, with civil penalty powers being used to clamp down on those who persist in breaking housing law. Feedback from landlords said the event was “dynamic and engaging” and “very useful”, demonstrating the “real support available with a collaborative approach”. Any landlord/agent who requires further information relating to private housing matters can contact the council’s private sector housing team at: privatesectorhousing@fenland.gov.uk
They will also maintain almost 50,000 square metres of shrub and rose beds and other flower bedding, and prune around thirty miles of hedgerows. Tivoli also maintains most of the district’s play parks, including BMX and skate parks, sports pitches, and twenty-three cemeteries and church yards. To check the grass cutting schedule for your local area visit: www.tivolifenland.co.uk/services-type/ grass-cutting/ Photo: Here we mow! Pictured, from left, are: Tivoli’s Kenny Smith; Simon Bell, Fenland District Council’s leisure and open spaces contract manager; Cllr Peter Murphy, FDC’s portfolio holder for the environment; Tivoli’s Mark Wakefield; Kevin Wilkins, FDC’s horticultural officer; and Tivoli’s Trevor Melton 14

Your Garden
April Gardening Tips As temperatures rise (we hope) and days lengthen, there is plenty to do on the allotment or vegetable patch: sowing, weeding and planting. However, beware as there is always a threat of night frosts and it is better to be cautious than to take a risk, as precious time will be wasted: don’t forget to cover early sowings with fleece or cloches if frosts are forecast. A major task in April is planting out potatoes. Although there is no hard and fast rule about dates, a rough guide would be; plant out first earlies around late March, second earlies early to mid-April and maincrops mid to late April. Potatoes need a sunny site, away from frost pockets – the newly emerging foliage is susceptible to frost damage in April and May and, if frosts are forecast, cover the emerging shoots with soil or fleece to protect them. The traditional planting method for potatoes is to dig a trench 12cm (5in) deep and space the tubers 30cm (12in) apart for earlies and 37cm (15in) for maincrop, in rows 24in (60cm) apart for earlies and 75cm (30in) apart for maincrop. Alternatively, you can grow the potatoes under black polythene, planting the tubers through slits. The big advantage of this method is that there is no need to earth up, and the new potatoes form just below soil level which means there's no digging to harvest them – they'll lie just below the sheet. You can sow several seeds indoors; chillies, peppers, celery, courgettes and summer squashes, runner and French beans, sprouting broccoli, Florence fennel, courgettes, summer squashes and sweetcorn are just a few.
Other jobs include: • Last chance to plant onion sets and sow aubergines and tomatoes indoors for transplanting out. • Most root crops can be sown now; it is probably your last chance to sow parsnips. • Sow sweetcorn – an interesting way of germinating sweetcorn is by pre-chitting: lay the seeds on a layer of damp kitchen paper then place a layer of paper over in an airtight box. Check daily and when a small white sprout appears, plant the seed about half to an inch deep in potting compost. • Last chance to plant onion sets. •
You can sow the following outdoors but under cover; beetroot, cucumbers, lettuces, turnips, oriental leaves, leeks, cabbage and salad leaves. They can be sown in pots, modules or prepared seed beds from which you can transplant them. If you do grow any seedlings in trays or modules and they have grown a couple of ‘true leaves’, prick them out and move to individual pots or larger modules. You can also harden off young plants by putting them outdoors on sunny day but bring them back in at night or put them in a cold frame or under cloches.
•
Don’t forget to regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture.
•
Make sure that fruit trees, canes and bushes are kept watered, as any fruit planted in the last 18 months is susceptible to drought damage. Adding mulch around the base will help.
• Sow maincrop peas and make the last sowing of summer broad beans. Enjoy the longer days!

Does Your Lawn Need Help?
I
s your lawn a lovely green piece of perfection or is it suffering with lots of weed and unsightly dead patches in it?
Either way, help and advice is on hand from Simon and Gale who run our local GreenThumb lawn treatment service. Their top tips for helping us look after our lawns as we enter spring are: ■ Keep mowing – on a fine day give it a cut on a high setting. Long and wet lawns will always encourage moss. ■ Let in the light – cut back over-hanging bushes that deprive the grass of essential sunlight and good air flow. Pick up rotting leaves and brush off worm casts. ■ Rake or scarify out dead grass – unsightly dead brown patches won’t miraculously turn green so while the lawn is dormant rake out as much dead matter as you can ready for seeding in spring. We can help!
■ Aerate your lawn – using a fork, spiker or aerator, now is the perfect time to sort compacted ground and improve drainage. It's energetic work so if you don’t want to do it yourself call GreenThumb! ■ Sort those weeds – it's best to tackle these in the spring when the weather conditions are right. We’re the people to help! Simon and Gale offer a FREE visit where they carry out a full analysis of your lawn and give advice. Treatments are based on lawn size and start from as little as £15 four times a year.

Don’t be Fooled by the Rogue Traders this April – and Give Doorstep Traders the Brush Off! by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades If the effects of winter have taken their toll on your garden, property or driveway, you may be thinking about calling in the experts to inject a little life back into the space at the rear or front of the house, or the exterior itself. But whatever the job, don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Firstly, they have caught you unawares, just when you have returned from the school run or got home after a long day at the office, a time when you don’t really have time to think and make an informed decision. Equally as disturbing, they will target elderly or vulnerable people living alone. Secondly, any offer which appears ‘too good to be true’ often is just that! Remember: ▪ Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment. ▪ Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing. ▪ Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number. ▪ Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out. ▪ Feel free to ask to see their credentials and/or examples of their work ▪ Ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable. Equally, be wary when it comes to leaflets dropping through your door; some may not be all that they seem. We know that there are many genuine companies who deliver leaflets, but there are also many scammers. The following simple rules which could give away tell-tale signs of a rogue trader: ▪ Do they say, ‘We are only in your area today’? ▪ Are they offering a reduced price for cash or having a one-time ‘special offer’? ▪ Are they trying to push you into a quick decision? Safe Local Trades is a supporter of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which is committed to working towards stamping out scams of this kind. We also work closely with Crime Prevention Officers across the county who alert us to scam trends which we can share with our consumers and our members. John Clare: Helpston Country Poet by Chris Urlwin
N
ow considered to be an important romantic poet, along with the likes of Wordsworth and Keats, Clare, being a virtually self-taught son of village peasants, achieved some recognition during his lifetime.
Attending school part time from seven to thirteen he received a limited education but studied hard and enjoyed books. Most of his life he worked in agriculture, either gardening, hay making or as a lime burner, writing in his spare time, his occupation always being described as agricultural. He was born in 1793 and spent much of his life at Helpston in the family cottage (now a museum), moving to Northborough in 1832. He wrote about country life and people that he knew and understood so well, often writing in local dialect – which did not endear him to the poetry establishment. Sometimes his poems were considered too 'earthy' for polite society, but he was reflecting the world that he knew. Later he became recognised for the insightful and affectionate depiction of the countryside, seasons and ways of ordinary country folk. His first collection of poems, Poems Descriptive of Rural Scenery, published in 1820 was well received, although some critics were picky about his grammar, which reflected his background and lack of formal

training. Those people who could afford to buy his books tended not to understand or recognise his rural style. He did attract benefactors though and eventually published three volumes and became accepted as a leading figure in the literary world. Having written more than 3500 poems in his lifetime, many more were published after his death at seventy years of age in 1864. He was inspired by a local girl, Mary Joyce, for whom he seemed to hold affection for the rest of his life, but he was not considered a good match. He later fell in love with and married Patty Turner and had a large family of nine, many predeceasing him (some at birth), as did his wife. He was always considered a loner and had a rare ability to observe things in great detail and describe them very accurately. He was a man of many talents, writing essays, pieces on wildlife, music and much more. It is thought that today he would have been diagnosed as bi-polar, and in 1837 was admitted to a mental institution at Epping, where he was treated sensitively but in 1841 walked back to Northborough believing he was meeting Mary. Later in 1841 he was admitted to a facility in Northampton where he died. During this time, he was free to roam and continued to write. How Does A Pandemic Impact Investments? by Eamonn Dorling
At the time of writing there have been drops in investment markets of ten to thirteen percent in a week. On one hand it’s the largest drop since the late 1980s or others say we are back to levels last seen two years ago. It depends on exactly what you are looking at and in which part of the world. Dealing has of course changed in recent years and has been developed to smooth out panic buying and selling by individuals and automated systems. There had been suggestions that 2020 was going to be a year of recovery, but coronavirus has taken confidence out of some markets. Consider that there will always be winners and losers, for example oil prices may reduce if travel is limited by reducing unfettered transport. Companies that make or handle hygiene products could benefit. Better information on the virus, media hysteria and negative sentiment can cause upsets that may be a threat or an opportunity. Later in the year, warm weather could also result in a fading of the effect. Of the four main categories of investing, property might be a bystander although home working might impact on working practices and care. Equity markets could rise and fall thus creating buying and selling opportunities. There could be credit risk and risk of a recession that could impact on cash and associated interest rates. So many investors gravitate towards government stocks if they are not confident in equities for example. The fixed interest was generally regarded as being overpriced before this happened, this
may have extended attractiveness of the sector, but at some time it may be best to move out of these. Predictions on how this may play out can be dangerous and investments should be viewed as long term not short term. If the investment has been set up for medium to long term, hold your nerve because a temporary drop in value results in a ‘paper loss’ rather than a real one. To exit an investment when it has reduced in value crystallises the loss. If you can hold your nerve. a recovery will follow (if history is to teach us a lesson). Well managed investment funds are aimed at long term benefits, drip feeding investments can provide an opportunity to buy investments when they are low and benefit from the recovery. The opposite is also true, regular savings plans can smooth out the volatility that is associated with equity-based investments. Cash deposits by contrast may offer a high degree of security but there is little optimism for high interest rates currently. If you need clarity for your investments and/ or pension funds, meet with an independent financial adviser. Recipe
EASTER BISCUITS Banish Easter holiday boredom by getting the kids involved in some baking! These easy biscuits are fun to decorate and yummy to eat!
Method
• Place the butter in a large mixing bowl with the caster sugar. Use a wooden spoon to beat until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the egg until well mixed, then gradually add the flour. Use your hands to bring the mixture together to a stiff dough. Gather into a ball and chill for 30 minutes (the dough, not you!). • Heat the oven to gas 4, 180°C, fan 160°C. Roll out the dough on a work surface lightly dusted with flour until it's the thickness of a £1 coin. With an oval cutter (or a cardboard egg-shaped template), cut out egg-shaped biscuits, using the rolled out trimmings to make more. Place on baking trays and bake in the oven for six to 10 minutes, depending on size, until golden brown.
Ingredients Makes approx. 18 biscuits 200g butter (room temperature) 200g caster sugar 1 egg 400g plain flour 250g royal icing sugar Assorted food colourings
40
D I S C O V E R I N G
• Allow the biscuits to cool for five minutes before removing from the baking tray to cool completely. • To decorate, make up the icing as directed on the packet. Divide between bowls adding a little food colouring to each bowl. Place the mixture into piping bags and get creative with your designs – the kids may like to use sweets or sprinkles too! These biscuits will keep for between one and two weeks when stored in a sealed cake tin.

Kitbags and Gladrags - by Dave Bailey

This month’s article will cover attire and gizmos – what to wear and what to pack in your effects arsenal.
erforming for either an open mic spot or a paid gig can be rewarding both financially, and in terms of the boost it gives to your confidence. There are many ways to enhance a performance from both the audible or visual aspect, depending on your style and musical genre.
can enhance any live performance. Take a look at www.youtube.com/watch?v=DehtqLVmdcA. This old model had a maximum of 23.8 seconds of loop, which could be overdubbed to add in vocals and percussion. The later versions from Boss in the RC series can now store both pre-recorded tracks and potentially loop up to an astounding eight hours.
Clothing, though not as important at an open mic gig, often reflects the artist’s commitment to their art. Whilst the current trend of today’s dress is threadbare ripped jeans and t-shirts embossed with expletives, the outfit worn should reflect both the venue and style of music you perform. If you’re playing grunge rock in a dimly lit cellar bar, advertising the event as mayhem driven thrash metal, then anything goes; but as a named performer at a wine bar, middle-ofthe-road event or concert, then you should style to match the occasion.
For vocal enhancement, a harmony pedal has the ability to add two tracked vocal lines. The TC Harmony Singer listens to your guitar chords and vocals, and can be set to add a combination of additional copies of your voice in harmony, above or below your own pitch in real time so there is no delay. Have a look at the demo: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yunhdYUh1uE.
To give you an example, many years ago I was playing at a church fete where the two young lads following us were wearing Sex Pistols t-shirts. As you might imagine, the minister asked them to put tape over one word to save the blushes of the ladies on the cake stall. To be honest this just drew attention to it – but it made us all laugh! Gizmos or pedals can bring a performance to life with harmonies, effects and looping. The classic Black Horse and the Cherry Tree track performed by KT Tunstall live using a head rush loop pedal demonstrated how a single pedal 42

A simple solution to a flat sounding performance is to add in some reverb to the vocals and guitar, and blend in a small amount of chorus to the guitar. Most PA desks have these effects on board as standard, but a chorus pedal can be inserted before the deck to give the performer more control over the amount of chorus you need. The Boss CH1 has classic chorus effects and can be used in both rock and acoustic styles to great effect. For the demo, see www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fc7lnIWT5iI. Have fun out there, and remember to look the part and sound amazing! Local open mic listings can be found at www.outa-stock.co.uk/OM.htm A P R IL 2 0 2 0

What's Easter All About? Is it just another story? Did it really happen as the Bible records it? Can it be scientifically and intellectually proved?
Farewell From Nigel and Jo... I will shortly be leaving the Whittlesey, Pondersbridge and Coates team. After my years of ministry in the town and villages we are on the move. I will be taking up a new appointment as priest in charge of the parishes of Upwell and Outwell. I have been team Rector for seventeen years and Jo and I have enjoyed living here. I have always felt it a privilege to serve the whole Benefice, its four churches, congregations and the whole population. I have appreciated all the contacts established over the years with other churches, our schools, the council, our residential homes and others. We will be sad to leave but also look forward to a new challenge. It will not be easy of Jo and I to leave with all that this place means to us both. Thank you every one of you for everything. The renown Jewish historian Josephus, along with others, clearly documented the gruesome and barbaric act of crucifixion during the time of the Roman Empire; even the Roman Empire ultimately outlawed it. Josephus also recorded that the most notable of all crucifixions was that of Jesus Christ and the two thieves. So, yes it did happen, exactly as the Bible records it, it’s not just another story, it’s a true historical record. Is there any scientific proof? It has proved difficult to find archaeological proof, simply because Rome had no respect for the bodies of those who they saw as criminals. Their bodies were often tossed into rubbish pits and left to rot or be eaten by vultures and their bones chewed by wild dogs to access the bone marrow. All this changed in 1968 when the bones of a crucified man were found in an ‘ossuary’ (what we call a coffin). The name ‘Yehohanan’ the son of Hagakol was etched on the ossuary. The heel bone was sent to the Hebrew University Medical School in Jerusalem where it was dated to around the time Jesus was crucified. The man’s bones had been broken and fragments of olive wood were found by a nail, indicating this man was crucified at eye level due to olive trees not growing very tall. John 19 verse 32 states that ‘the soldiers came and broke the legs of one of the thieves who had been crucified with Jesus.’ Because thieves were not considered as important as Jesus their crosses would not have been as high. The general opinion is that this man was one of the thieves. Find out more. Join us for our Easter celebration and enjoy the puppeteers, dancers, drama, song and much more on Sunday, April 12th at 10.45am. Easter
Follow the Bunny... he has the chocolate! – by Holly-Jean
F
our months into 2020 and I think we’re all wishing we could turn it off and back on again! How have our New Year’s resolutions gone then? Still, keeping up with them? Well, my nutribullet has gone away until January 2021 and I have approximately 79p in my bank account, I’ve been in isolation for a week and have eaten half of the house – so my 2020 saving and dieting is going... smashing. That was an incredibly cynical start to April’s article – I apologise. It’s April! The daffodils and sun are finally bursting their way back through for the first time in what seems like forever, it’s Easter and all the children are excited – who am I kidding? I’m nearly twenty and even I’m excited. Easter is all about re-birth and well, here we are still in the early stages of 2020 and I guess every year we all get reborn in a way. We get given the chance to forget about the year just gone and start afresh. Now that it’s coming into spring; baby birds are out, the buds are blooming, the world is now alive again and rich in colour after what can sometimes seem like a grey season – winter. I hope the thought of Easter makes you feel a bit warmer as the kids come out looking for chocolate eggs and you’re stuffing your face with the ones the bunny left ‘just for you’. Easter is a very special time for me, I have very fond memories of it as a child. And I guess I never really realised why. When you’re in school the story of Easter is very much hammered into you and I think,
46

Whittlesea
despite how important the story is, we take it for granted. Now whatever your thoughts on Easter itself, I’m sure you can appreciate that, much like any holiday, it is precious for families. As I said earlier I am nearly twenty years old, however, the memories of Easter as a child still mean so much to me; running around frantically trying to find the little eggs in the garden, being terrified of the Easter bunny (I was a strange child, deal with it), having chocolate eggs you didn’t quite get through on the countertop for months. One of my favourite Easter memories is from 2007. I had my first sleepover staying at somebody else’s house and I was petrified. We watched Coraline, which was the equivalent of The Grudge to seven-year-old me, and then we slept. Well, everybody else did. Me? I got my Mum to pick me up at 3am. I was so upset that I wimped out and came home... until I woke up to a snowy Easter Sunday morning, once I’d recovered from a possible sugar overdose. Easter is a magical time for children and at that point in time, it became all the more special for me. This may have been due to a tonne of chocolate and snow, but Easter is a special time. Regardless of your beliefs or reasonings, just take it as a time to be with your family and feel the magic that you once did as a child. ‘You are made of stardust, wishes and magical things...you just have to believe.’

St. George's Fayre 2020 CANCELLED! St George’s Fayre, which was due to be held in March on Sunday, April 26, has been cancelled due to Coronavirus (COVID-19).
T
he annual event organised by Fenland District Council and a committee of volunteers usually attracts thousands of people to the town every year.
But due to the latest guidance from the Government and World Health Organisation and growing public concern relating to Coronavirus, the committee has taken the decision to cancel the event. Cllr Peter Murphy, the Council’s Cabinet member responsible for events, said: “St George’s Fayre is a highlight in the calendar for many, so it is with deep regret that is has had to be cancelled. We realise this will be a great disappointment to the thousands who usually attend, and to our loyal stall holders, but it is necessary in these unprecedented circumstances.” “I’d like to thank the events staff and the committee for all the hard work they have put into this year’s event, and we look forward to it returning next year.”
AP RI L 2 0 2 0
The council will be contacting stallholders, caterers and entertainers to offer the option of transferring their booking to next year’s event, which will be on Sunday, April 25, 2021, or a full refund. Cllr Steve Tierney, the Council’s Cabinet member responsible for emergency planning, added: “Fenland District Council is monitoring the situation with respect to COVID-19 and continues to follow national Government and Public Heath England (PHE) advice in its decision making. “It also continues to play an active role in the multiagency Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Local Resilience Forum (CPLRF) to support the area’s response to the pandemic. We have robust policies and resilience plans in place for emergencies and business continuity, which we continue to review and refresh as the situation develops.”

Club Spotlight
Whittlesey Warriors Netball Club Alison Briggs along with Mel took on the new roles of coaches to help these young players improve and develop and with the added help from Jannette Bowden from England Netball the club soon had teams capable of joining local junior leagues. More recent club successes must be put down to the current coaching team led by head coach Louise Riley and assisted by Louise and Shaun Phillips and Mollie Briggs. These coaches must be credited for the recent success in the league with the club’s junior teams finishing champions and runners up in more than one age group and a team of juniors being selected to play in The Warriors Elite Squad in The JDG league based in Cambridge.

T
his year sees Whittlesey Warriors Netball Club, a member of the Whittlesey Sports Association, celebrating its tenth anniversary which is due to be marked with a Ball at the Eastrea Village Hall in June.
The club began following an idea by Kirsty Hills and Nicola Phillips and with a few interested ladies on board they started meeting at the Manor Leisure Centre, Whittlesey for a weekly ‘mess around’. Mel Chamberlain was then invited to come along and lend her previous netball experience to help the ladies. The club started gaining in numbers and a new venue was needed as the courts at the Manor were not in good repair. The club then moved to New Road School but with numbers increasing and the need for floodlit courts, it then moved to its current home of the Sir Harry Smith College. The club has grown and grown, now having over thirty senior members playing in the Wisbech Netball League on a Wednesday evening in a very competitive league, the club being represented in all three divisions. In June 2013 it was decided to add a junior section to the club to give local girls the opportunity of playing netball. Senior members Julia Speechley,

There have also been individual successes with five ladies being selected to train with netball’s Super League squad – Loughborough Lightning, and eight ladies selected to train with the Cambridgeshire county squads. The club now has one Level 2 coach, seven Level 1 coaches, one C Award umpire and five new umpires and is always offering the opportunity of all members to join the coaching/umpiring staff. Warriors Netball Club and some of its member have been nominated by England Netball for awards for outstanding contributions to netball. The club’s latest initiatives are its ‘Walking Netball Club’ and ‘Grab a Bib’ sessions; both have successfully encouraged new members to join the club with the walking netball encouraging over twenty men and women to come along and have some fun, with the Grab a Bib sessions offering netball but with no training or commitment. At £4 a session, it’s a good way to meet new people and have some exercise, all at the same time. If you wish to know anything more about our club please email melchamberlain021@gmail.com for further information. Monday nights at Sir Harry Smith College (indoors in the winter months) £4 per session, £6 for both: Walking Netball – 7pm-8pm Grab a Bib – 8pm-9pm Normal club sessions will be resumed at the end of the Coronavirus outbreak.

LADYSMITH W.I CANCELS APRIL MEETING
LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS RAISES THE ROOF AND CASH… Almost two hundred people have attended a charity Last Night of the Proms night held at the Whittlesey Indoor Bowls Complex. Pets’ Corner
Caring For Your Older Pet by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre
Our pets are entering their senior years anywhere from the age of seven years and just like with us, things change as they become older. We can see behavioural changes, because of physical reasons, and physical changes, because of behavioural reasons. Have you seen any of the following in your older pet? • They interact differently with you, other people or other animals. • More sensitive or reactive to things in their environment e.g. noises. • React in different ways to everyday life e.g. has changed their choice of sleeping area, wants to be close to you more or spends more time on their own. • Sleeping for longer periods. • More anxious about things in general e.g. a change in their routine or a new location. • Hearing or sight loss related changes in their behaviour e.g. recall is not so good. • Any lumps that have developed on their body. • An increase in the amount of water they drink each day. • An increase in the amount and frequency of urine they pass each day. • Less compliant and responsive to cues you have taught them. • A decline in their appetite. • Difficulty to eat food; their teeth may need cleaning or removing. • Have trouble sitting or sit differently now e.g. tilted to one side, with a leg out to the side. • Stands differently, holds one, two or four legs out to the side to help keep their balance or has both front legs close to each other. • Have trouble getting up from lying down. • Makes a groaning noise as they lie down or never lies on a particular side anymore. • Have trouble going up and down steps or stairs. • Find exercises they used to love doing, difficult.

• Less physically active, tires quicker during their walks or cats go outside less or hunt less. • While out walking they stop or lie down and move quicker when they know they are on the way home. • Less interested in playing. • Growling in situations they never did before e.g. if you disturb their sleep, drying their feet after a walk. • More sensitive to you touching them. • Appears confused or disoriented or gets lost in their own home or garden. • Have started to stand in corners of the room or facing a wall. • Loss of their housetraining skills. • Have become more vocal. It is important to bring your pet along for an examination twice a year, so our veterinary surgeons can check for any age-related diseases developing. Early detection gives us the opportunity for early intervention, helping to increase the success of their treatment. If your pet is over the age of seven, please contact the surgery to find out more about our ‛Senior Wellness Offer’ this month.

Figures shown are for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption and CO2 figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including the accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, driving styles and vehicle load. There is a new test used for fuel consumption and CO2 figures (known as WLTP). The CO2 figures shown however, are based on a calculation designed to be equivalent to the outgoing (NEDC) test cycle and will be used to calculate vehicle tax on first registration. The range of figures stated covers the entire Volkswagen Golf model range including all-electric, hybrid and petrol/diesel vehicles. All-electric vehicles are zero emissions while driving. Hybrid vehicle figures were obtained using a combination of battery power and fuel. For more information, please see www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/wltp or consult your retailer. Data correct at 12/19. Figures quoted are for a range of configurations and are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes. Please consult your retailer for further information. Official fuel consumption figures for the Golf model range in mpg (litres/100km): Combined 0 (0.0) - 141.2 (2). Combined CO2 emissions 0-164g/km.
