JUNE 2020
Introduction
Welcome to Your June Issue. Inside Highlights
Welcome to our third on-line version of your favourite community lifestyle magazine. Spring has come and will soon be gone, with some signs that normality is not too far away. Optimists are seeing some hope, as certain restrictions are being lifted, and some children may be edging slowly, and very carefully, back to their classrooms. Some businesses have returned to pre-lockdown working, whilst many are still anxiously playing the waiting game. Let us all hope that the damage, inevitably done to many firms, large and small, during the lockdown can soon be repaired and that high streets will soon be buzzing again. Whatever we may be going through, let us all remember that June 21st is Father’s Day and the opportunity to shower that special one with “virtual hugs” and gifts. To my dad and to my husband Chris I send all my love. Keep healthy everyone and stay safe.

First of all, I hope you are all keeping well and, more importantly, safe during the current coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic. The past few weeks have been so strange as we have all kept our distance from our friends and, often, family. Hopefully, there are encouraging signs that we may be winning the battle against COVID-19, but we know we are in it for the long haul as we have to be mindful of future flare-ups. These unprecedented times have in some cases impacted not only on many people’s physical, but also in some cases mental, health as the burden of isolation has been hard to bear. Fortunately, the weather has recently been great and has allowed many of us to go into our gardens to take the sun. Let us hope that life soon returns to some sort of normality so that we can all enjoy the rest of the summer together outdoors. Finally, on behalf of the people of Fenland I would like to congratulate former March businessman Captain Tom Moore for raising more than £32 million for charity by walking laps of his garden and being honoured with a knighthood and made an honorary colonel on his 100th birthday. What a fantastic achievement by an amazing man…

Your Garden
June Gardening Tips
J
une is one of the busiest months of the year for the vegetable gardener: there are crops to plant, sow, and harvest, weeding, watering, feeding, getting rid of pests – the list seems never-ending. You really do need to keep on top of all these jobs to get the best out of your plot.
Did you know that in every square metre of soil there can be as many as 100,000 weeds? Yes, I am sure you do!! No wonder there is a relentless battle going on between gardener and weeds. Do keep them at bay as they use water and nutrients that your crops need and shade them from the light. •
Hoe regularly and particularly when the soil is dry, as the severed and exposed roots will die quickly. If you hoe when the soil is damp remove remains so that they will not re-grow.
•
Spread mulches such as garden compost, well-rotted manure or bark chips, to suppress weeds or use lightproof membrane to kill more established weeds.
• Make sure that you do not let weeds flower; you will only get new crops of weeds from their seeds. Pests are also becoming more noticeable in the warmer weather so don’t forget to net brassicas to protect them from the pigeons, and it is a good idea to protect carrots from carrot fly by covering with a fine mesh. Cabbage root fly, which attacks the roots of brassicas, is caused by female flies laying their eggs on the surface of the soil next to the stem of the plant. When transplanting out young plants, place something around the base of the plant to create a collar, for example a piece of carpet, cardboard or fleece.

As the month progresses, thinning and planting out to final positions will start to overtake sowing as the main activity as this month offers the last opportunity to sow many seeds. Sweetcorn can be planted out and, as it is self-pollinating, it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction. ` Other jobs include: • Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed but make sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position. • Thin out seedlings and plant others in their final growing positions. • Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies. • Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface and use for compost, but leave the roots in the ground as a good source of nitrogen. •
Once you are sure that frosts are over, you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows and squashes.
• Succession sow beetroot, salad crops, carrots and, later in the month, Florence fennel. Traditionally, Florence fennel is sown after the longest day, June 21st, as it is less likely to bolt. If the weather is dry, then water your seed drills well before sowing – this way the young plants will develop a good root system. • Last chance to sow runner beans and main crop carrots. •
Brussels sprouts, leeks, sprouting broccoli and the last of the summer, autumn and red cabbages, and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted.
• Protect carrots with insect proof netting and net brassicas to deter pigeons. Happy planting!

COVID-19 Briefing: Government Bans All New Evictions For Three Months In the latest in a string of measures introduced to tackle the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Government has announced a moratorium on evictions, including for non-payment of rent. Whilst this is welcomed by tenants struggling to find the money to get by, many landlords are worried that this may add to the strain many of them are already facing. However, help is available to ease the burden both from the Government and from us. Read on to find out more. What are the new measures relating to evictions? The Government announcement indicates that there will be a complete ban on all new evictions for the next three months to ease pressure on tenants who are experiencing financial difficulties during the coronavirus outbreak. This is part of an unprecedented package of measures introduced by the Government to attempt to deal with the effects of the pandemic including housing problems. Landlords will not be able to start proceedings in this time to evict tenants; the system is being brought to a complete stop to try and ease the pressure on tenants and the economy at large. This applies even when tenants are not paying their rent. Who will the new measures apply to? Among others, the measures include tenants living in private rented accommodation. The measures effectively amount to a guarantee to private tenants during the outbreak that they will not be made homeless. These measures apply to private tenants in England and Wales. How long will the measures last? It is not clear at the moment. The announcement indicates that these measures are going to cover at least the next three months. It remains to be seen whether this period of time will be extended. The difficulty is that given the unprecedented nature and sheer scale of the pandemic, it is not clear how long the effects of COVID-19 will last. Do I lose the rent not paid during this three month period? No. The Government advice at this stage is that following the end of the moratorium landlords and tenants should work together to come up with an affordable repayment plan for rent from this period that was unpaid. This should take into account the individual circumstances of the tenant. 8

What do I do if I have a buy-to-let mortgage? There is some good news; lenders have agreed to a payment holiday for the three-month period for landlords with tenants who are experiencing financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. I’m a private landlord: what do I now? In such a difficult time, everything generally runs smoother if people work together. It is more likely than not to be in your interest to speak to everyone involved, work out a plan and make sure that everyone knows exactly what their obligations are and that you are all on the same page. Here are some practical steps that you can take right now: • Call your tenants about the COVID-19 outbreak.
Like with the virus, prevention is better than cure when it comes to legal disputes, so it is best to have an open and honest conversation with your tenants about any financial difficulties they are facing.
• Work together with them so that both sides appreciate the difficulty faced by the other
Reassure your tenants that you understand it is a difficult time for them, and if it seems that they won’t be able to meet their rental obligations due to the pandemic, agree in principle with them that once the moratorium is over they will pay any rent that is unpaid.
If you agree to reduced rent or to a rent-free period, make it clear in writing that you are not waiving your right to this rent, but only delaying the payment until the end of the moratorium.
• Speak to your lender.
As with your tenants, speak to your lender if your tenants will not be able to pay some or all of their rent for the next three-month period. Explain any difficulties this may create in meeting your mortgage repayments and speak to them about the three-month moratorium. If possible, get any agreement to the payment holiday in writing from your lender.
• Keep accurate, detailed and up-to-date records Make sure you keep a record of all your conversations in case a dispute arises later on as this can be valuable evidence. Also ensure that you record how much rent is due on what date as well as what, if anything, you received (backed up with evidence, e.g. bank statements). JUNE 2020

• Talk to us We absolutely understand how difficult the market has been for landlords in recent years and particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.
It is entirely possible, therefore, that new legislation will have been introduced which will mean that all or part of this briefing no longer reflects the current law. Because of this, we ask you to consider that, although correct at time of printing, information in this sheet may no longer be up-to-date and it is always best practice to consult with a lawyer about anything contained in this briefing.
Even if you don’t want us to do anything, it is never a bad idea to let us know that you have been affected by the outbreak so we can offer some preliminary advice on what you should be doing.
That way when the moratorium ends, we will already understand your circumstances which is invaluable should you need our help in getting back any lost rent, drafting repayment agreements or evicting a tenant.
Although our office doors are closed, our lawyers are still available to help answer any of your questions about this or any other legal concern you have.
We know this is a very difficult time for landlords, but we are here to help even if you just want a quick chat for some reassurance. If in doubt, call us; we’re always happy to help.

Covid-19 Situation Update Here at Maxey Grounds our priority always has been, and remains the safety and health of our colleagues, clients and the general public. That is why we were operating remotely before the Government advised everybody to work from home where possible. Throughout the lockdown period we have been operating as fully as Government restrictions permit and using methods that safeguard all we interact with. Now that the Government are permitting the property market to operate and allowing viewings and transactions to proceed, our means of working is changing. However, the same overall priority of safety for all remains. Since the Government advice remains to work from home where possible, our staff are still working remotely. However, the investments we have made in the last few years on technology means that calls to our usual phone numbers and emails will reach us and will be dealt with promptly. We are progressing plans to ensure our offices can be operated in a safe manner when it is judged appropriate and safe to reintroduce face to face contact with clients. We have introduced policies and procedures for inspections and viewings to enable these to take place maintaining the hygiene and social distancing guidelines, where it is safe to do so. Our staff are all fully briefed on maintaining a safe environment for all involved in inspections and viewings. We are also introducing virtual tours using the latest photographic technology so that before a physical viewing takes place, prospective buyers can have looked at the property remotely and have a good understanding of the property, its condition and the accommodation it provides so that unnecessary physical viewings of properties are minimised. These tours, initially provided for vacant property during lockdown, are being rolled out across all properties on the market. We continue to use the remote communication tools including phone and video conferencing meetings that have served us well over the last 8 weeks and enabled us to continue to provide a service to clients throughout the lockdown period. Our property auction on 1st July is proceeding in an online format, and there is still sufficient time to enter any new lots. We have received many enquiries about the properties already being offered. Since restrictions were eased on 13th May, the phones and emails have been busy with people wanting to sell, buy and rent property. Several sales have already been agreed, so now that transactions can progress, give us a call and we will be happy to assist you. Our message to you is simple. Thank you for continuing to cooperate with us to ensure all stay safe and healthy during these difficult times. Maxey Grounds are, and have been throughout, open for business in the new “normal way and look forward to speaking to you soon. 18th May 2020

The 75th anniversary of VE Day celebrations in Whittlesey had to be changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but we were still able pay tribute and commemorate the sacrifice of all those locally, who served, fought and died during the Second World War. I had the honour of laying a wreath on Friday, May 8th at 11am at Whittlesey War Memorial, when a two-minute silence was observed. After the wreath laying, I witnessed community help and sport working together as the Helping Whittlesey Group teamed up with Whittlesea Wheelers Cycling Club to provide and deliver over two hundred fish and chip meals cooked by Sue Harrison of Chippy Sues to the elderly and most-in-need residents. Absolutely tremendous!!! In the late afternoon, my husband Robert and I drove around Whittlesey to say hello and experience the VE Day atmosphere across Whittlesey (allowing for social distancing). The celebrations were fantastic and very innovative and the memories from that day will live with me forever.
YOUR MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
I cannot believe it is over two years since fellow councillors bestowed on me the great honour of becoming Mayor of Whittlesey. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Mayor and it has been a great privilege to represent the town and the surrounding villages. Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported me during my term of office and made these years very special. During April we sadly lost Alan Bristow, who was both a town and district councillor. Alan was not only a councillor and colleague but a true friend. He was one of a kind and will be very much missed. Alan worked tirelessly for Whittlesey and for Lattersey Ward, which he represented, he championed improvements for Whittlesea Station and as a previous chairman of governors at New Road School he put the needs and development of primary school children at the forefront of local politics. There will be a memorial service for Alan in Whittlesey when we get back to normal. Our thoughts and prayers at this time are with Alan's wife Sandra, his son Paul and his grandchildren. 12

Unfortunately, due to the current situation I had to take the decision to cancel my three Mayor's charity events planned for this year. However, I would still like to support my Mayor's charities, which are Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall, Army Cadets Whittlesey Branch and the Young Technicians and hope to plan something in the future in order to help these good causes. There are many volunteers in Whittlesey and the villages who are deserving of a big thank you, especially those who go that extra mile to make a real difference to people’s lives. It has been a real honour and privilege that as Mayor I have been able to meet and in some cases work with these individuals and groups and I would like to salute you all. We are very fortunate here in Whittlesey to have these amazing people who volunteer and contribute so much to the fabric of our local community – thank you. I have been greatly supported in my role as Mayor by my husband and consort Robert. He has also been my chauffeur, photographer and speech writer. Thank you, Robert, and I have been very proud that you have been by my side during the journey. JUNE 2020
One of the highlights of the last year was the opening of the new town council offices, Peel House in Queen Street on September 29th, 2019 by His Honour Neil McKittrick, JP, DL, High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire. The project to relocate the offices of Whittlesey Town Council had been three years in the planning after the purchase of the old police station, and I am sure Peel House will become a significant community asset for the town for many years to come. I wish to thank Cllr. David Mason who has been a tower of strength as my deputy and his experience as a former town mayor has been enormous; his work on the move to the new town council offices at Peel House has been invaluable. Special mention also to Sue Piergianni, the town clerk, who has been a great help and support to me as Mayor, she has been a constant source of good advice and knowledge and a very efficient organiser. Thank you to both David and Sue for all you have done to make my term as Mayor run successfully and smoothly. The most inspiring project that Robert and I have achieved during my term as Mayor is the formation of The Whittlesey Sports Association, bringing many sports clubs and groups in the Whittlesey area together and promoting sport, participation for all and well being. The association in June of last year organised an It’s a Knockout Tournament and Try It Sports Day at Whittlesey Juniors Football Club, which proved very successful. I wish my successor as Mayor of Whittlesey many congratulations and all the best for the future. Stay safe and we will come through the current coronavirus pandemic and we will meet again soon. Kind regards, Cllr. Julie Windle, Mayor of Whittlesey
RESIDENTS HAVE THEIR SAY ON DOG CONTROLS Residents have been asked if they support Fenland District Council continuing to enforce dog fouling and dog control issues across the district. A Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) enabling the council to undertake enforcement against issues such as dog fouling and out-of-control dogs is set to expire and so it conducted an online survey for residents to have their say on it extending the PSPO for a further three years. Introduced in 2017 as part of the council’s ongoing Tidy Fenland campaign, the PSCO imposes the following dog control restrictions: • Dog fouling to be removed from any land to which the public have access • Out-of-control dogs to be put on a lead when requested by an authorised officer • Dogs to be on a lead in some open play areas, public facilities, closed cemeteries, and churchyards • Dogs to be excluded from fenced/gated play areas and open cemeteries The council has also reminded dog owners to follow the PSPO rules during the coronavirus pandemic. Staff are still carrying out enforcement patrols where possible, and anyone caught breaching the order can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice.
RAILWAY LINE GOES ONLINE… Coronavirus may have put the brakes on train travel for most of us, but a new website is giving people a taste of Fenland’s community railway line from the comfort of their home. The Hereward Community Rail Partnership (CRP) has launched a new website at www.herewardcrp. org to promote the Hereward Line between Ely and Peterborough and its railway stations at Manea, March and Whittlesea. The website gives viewers a chance to ‘explore the line’, and includes nearby attractions, activities, and places to stay to help people plan a trip for when it is safe to travel again. It also includes a travel advice section with train service updates, including the current reduced timetable of services for workers to get to and from their work.

What Impact Might ‘Working from Home’ Have? by Eamonn Dorling
even more when there are flooded roads in our area), and a reduction in travel costs of up to twenty percent of their normal expenditure. Someone else is considering whether they need two vehicles, with the gradual reduction of value as one stands parked on the drive and associated repair, insurance, and maintenance costs. This brings me to the point, could the savings be made to work harder?
It is probable that there will be long term effects from the enforced practice of working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lockdown. I appreciate that some workers have little option but to work in a workplace or many locations other than at home. However, some have been able to work from home successfully and some less so. Organisations may review the way they conduct business, and some will find a competitive edge by embracing the concept where it makes sense to do so. Someone I spoke with recently said that she worked from home one day a week normally so that she could combine work with looking after her children. Her point was that now she is doing it every day she has become very good at it and her productivity has increased. There are time and financial savings available, some that I have spoken to value the reduction in travel time to be five hours a week (surely
Regular contributions to a pension can be very tax-efficient, while investments can fall in value as well as increase, compared to the devaluation of a motor vehicle. There is a pretty good case for considering a tax-efficient Individual Savings Account (ISA) or a pension top-up to help out later in life. Some have found that their cash deposits are attracting very little interest and yet investment markets are still relatively weak (at time of writing), maybe an involvement with a recovering equity market could potentially make those funds work harder for you? If you want advice – seek out an independent financial adviser for a free initial ‘meeting’ that might be by phone or a virtual meeting via the internet rather than face-to-face now. JUNE 21st:
FATHER’S DAY
Y
but it’s not the only day we can celebrate….
ou may already know that this year, Father’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday June 21st. It’s always the third Sunday in the month, ever since the idea was introduced in the USA in 1910. In the UK, we’d long acknowledged Mothering Sunday as the fourth Sunday in Lent, (March 22nd this year), so it was only fair that we dads should get their treats as well.
June 1st: National Dare Day The time when you can challenge anyone to make a dare, be it a personal thing liking asking her/him out on a date, a challenge for them to achieve something special or just make a fool of themselves. June 4th: Hug Your Cat Day If you are a cat lover, this is why you have your feline friend in the first place, but today’s the day to make more of a fuss than usual
June 21st: The Summer Solstice The longest day of the year so make the most of it now before the nights start pulling in – downhill to winter! June 26th: Forgiveness Day. Alexander Pope wrote, “To err is human, to forgive, divine.” Three hundred years on, it’s still true and today’s the day to forgive and be forgiven. These are just a few of the days which can be celebrated in June, but how could you not raise a glass to the following beauties? June 2nd: National Rocky Road Day June 9th: National Donald Duck Day June 13th: National Weed Your Garden Day, or June 28th: International Body Piercing Day?!
June 8th: Best Friends Day For that really special person, here’s the chance to show them just how much you appreciate their friendship – send them a card or a gift! June 17th: Eat Your Vegetables Day The ideal opportunity to do as the experts are telling us – at least five portions of fruit and veg. per day. (Alternatively, June 5th happens to be Doughnut Day!!!)

OPEN FOR BUSINESS IN FENLAND Fenland firms which are open for business during the coronavirus pandemic have been offered a new online platform to spread the word. Fenland District Council has launched Fenland Open for Business to help link people with local businesses and tradespeople who are still operating in the face of the outbreak. Around 100 businesses have already registered for the service, which will help potential customers know where they can go for goods and services across the district. The platform has been launched on the council’s Fenland for Business website. To sign up for free, or find out more about which local companies are still open, visit www.fenlandforbusiness.co.uk/ coronavirus Businesses can also use the site to advertise any job vacancies they have. Councillor Ian Benney, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for economic growth, said: “The coronavirus pandemic is having a profound impact on local businesses, which are the lifeblood of our economy. Business owners and self-employed people are soldiering on despite the uncertainty, thinking of new ways to reach their customers in the light of the unprecedented precautions we all have to take. “The new Fenland Open for Business platform makes it quick and easy for people to find out which businesses in Fenland are still open. It’s free for businesses to sign up and get listed, so I’d urge as many as possible to get registered and make the most of the platform.” 24

He also urged residents to try and shop locally where possible: “As a council, we want to encourage people to think first and foremost about buying goods and services from our Fenland-based businesses before going to large internet retailers. The vast majority of Fenland businesses are owned and run by people who live locally and are also valued members of the community.” The council is also working hard to distribute the Government’s business support grants in Fenland to help businesses through the coronavirus crisis. If you haven’t claimed but think your business might be eligible for a grant, don’t delay – you can complete a declaration form online at www.fenland.gov.uk/coronavirusbusinessgrants. Any businesses needing advice to complete their declarations can contact the council for help on 01354 654321 or email: covid19.businessgrants@ fenland.gov.uk To find out more about the support available for businesses, visit www.fenland.gov.uk/ coronavirusbusinessadvice
HELP FOR THE HOMELESS Private landlords are being urged to help ensure homeless people continue to have a safe place to live once the coronavirus lockdown ends. Following the COVID-19 outbreak, Fenland District Council has been working hard to implement government guidance to protect rough sleepers from the spread of the virus, to make sure emergency accommodation and support are available. More than fifty rough sleepers have been temporarily rehoused in local hotels and bed and breakfast facilities and provided with ongoing support, such as treatment programmes and financial advice, to help them move on to permanent accommodation when lockdown restrictions are lifted. Now the council is asking any landlords with available homes in the district to get in touch to help provide more permanent accommodation. Landlords that can offer help can contact the council on 01354 654321 and ask for the housing options team or email: housingadvice@fenland.gov.uk Anyone in need of urgent housing advice or assistance can use the contact details above or complete an online referral at www.fenland.gov.uk/ housingadvice JUNE 2020
REFUSE TEAMS PRAISED New figures reveal that waste and recycling collected from Fenland homes has shot up by seventeen percent since coronavirus lockdown measures were introduced. Despite reduced staff numbers, Fenland District Council’s hardworking refuse crews collected an extra 534 tonnes of waste and recycling between March 23rd and April 23rd compared to normal – the equivalent of thirty double decker buses or 106 African elephants! Each working day the crews are collecting 38 tonnes of recycling and 92 tonnes of green bin waste – both up by 12%. Meanwhile, garden waste has seen a massive 36% increase – with 48 tonnes being collected every brown bin day.
CALLING ALL YOUNG RECYCLING HEROES… Is your youngster a recycling hero? Do they know what does and doesn’t go in the blue bin? Perhaps they’re emptying bottles and rinsing cans and yogurt pots – and making sure other family members recycle right? If so, then Fenland District Council’s new Recycling Hero competition is for them. To test children’s recycling knowledge and give them a fun challenge to complete during the coronavirus school closures, the council’s expert Getting It Sorted recycling volunteers have been busy creating a colouring competition for kids aged five to sixteen. Cllr Peter Murphy, the council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “It’s great that our fabulous volunteers have generously spent their time designing something for the kids to do during the school closures, and help them learn about recycling.” Visit www.fenland.gov.uk/recyclinghero2020 where you can download and print a range of recycling hero templates to be coloured in and completed.
At times, the refuse team has been down by a quarter, but staff have worked rest days and cancelled annual leave to keep things running as smoothly as possible. Additional new staff have also been trained and an extra refuse collection vehicle is being used to help cope with the increased demand. Councillor Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “Bin collections are one of our most vital services, provided to over 45,000 households across Fenland. In the last few weeks, with more people staying at home, the refuse crews have collected unprecedented levels of waste, but they have adapted to the situation with incredible professionalism and determination to get the job done. “Our thanks must go to them for working so hard to make sure all blue, green and brown bin collections have been maintained as normal. I’d also like to thank the street cleansing team for continuing to provide an excellent seven-day service and the workshop staff who are keeping our vehicles on the road.”
Entries can be sent to gettingitsorted@fenland. gov.uk or posted to: Recycling Hero Competition, Fenland District Council, The Base, Melbourne Avenue, March, Cambridgeshire, PE15 0EN. You can also display your creations in your windows at home to show your support for your bin crews or share on social media tagging @FenlandCouncil and using the hashtags #recyclinghero and #gettingitsorted. There will be some super prizes up for grabs for the winners, which will be announced after the competition closes on July 20th, 2020. J U NE 2 0 2 0

Another great initiative organised by the Helping Whittlesey Group was a Fry Past as the country remembered VE Day. Thanks to many companies and individuals, fish and chip dinners and a VE Day cake were distributed around the town and local villages to the elderly and vulnerable. Sue Harrison of Chippy Sue’s volunteered and prepared the 208 meals and Whittlesea CC Wheelers had a team of cyclists who went far and wide to deliver the hot food; it was a resounding success. Deborah Slator thanked again those who helped out on the day. She said: “We wanted to do something special to celebrate the day and fish and chips is typically British. We are grateful to our growing band of supporters who have either helped us financially or in kind and those who were able to lend a hand/bike.” Those who have benefitted by the free meals on Wednesdays have either been nominated as those who would benefit the most or you can make direct contact with Deborah on 07843 383368.
WHITTLESEY FEEDS THE COMMUNITY
It was another hectic Wednesday at the Falcon Hotel on London Street as the owner Colin Wilson cooked and served meals for the elderly and those in greatest need thanks to the generosity of local businesses and establishments. Deborah Slator, chair of the Whittlesey and District Business Forum and lead person of the Helping Whittlesey group, has co-ordinated this fantastic initiative which has more than doubled the number of hot meals delivered to Whittlesey residents by a team of dedicated volunteers. The success of the scheme has meant the distribution has had to be split between lunch and dinner. At 12 noon and 4pm, the team of volunteer drivers arrive and in military precision collect their destination ticket, hot food and out they go ensuring those in need are being supported. Despite the current tough times in the pub and hotel industry Colin, who has been in charge for nine years, has arranged a takeaway service for Sunday lunch where customers can call the Falcon Hotel on 01733 351001 on a Saturday evening and can collect their dinner between noon and 2pm on the Sunday for a bargain £8.50 a head. 26

We all know how challenging these times are. My message this month is simple – there is hope. King David wrote a beautiful Psalm: Happy is the one who does not rely on the advice of the ungodly, nor follows the paths they tread or sits among those who are always mocking. But who, day and night, meditates on and finds pleasure in the Law of God. They will be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, and produces fruit in the appropriate season. Their leaves will not fade and die, and whatever they do will prosper. Psalm 1: 1-3
A new Christian sought the advice of an old lady whose life had not always gone as planned. He had heard from many in the church how impressed they are by her steadfastness and positive attitude, regardless of what she is facing. He decided to ask her the question ‘What is your most inspiring Bible verse?’. 09:59 The lady thought for a moment then said, young man, that would be ‘and it came to pass’. He looked confused until she explained. Life has taught me that in times of trouble my life can be like a small branch thrown into the river which has no option but to go wherever the river decides to go. Or, I can take care of my tree to keep it healthy and its branches strong so that the raging river does not move me. I have discovered that ‘everything comes... only to pass, and they will do if I refuse to immerse myself in them’. Every time I read ‘and it came to pass’ it reminds me of this lady. Don’t let life’s pressures control you. Right now, you may think things are never going to change. But they will pass. Feel free to contact the office if you need to talk, we’re here to help. Producing great classic and new beer styles, a good number of which are bottle conditioned, this brewery has a range of very impressive ales, that includes award winners and multi award-winning productions. Knight of the Garter Golden Ale: (3.8% vol). Described on the label as ‘Sunshine in a glass’ (I agree), this golden ale is brewed with a blend of hops from the New World. A citrus aroma greets the nasal senses, which follows admirably to the mouthfeel. Guardsman Best Bitter: (4.2% vol). Extremely popular, Guardsman is brewed utilising Fuggles and Goldings whole leaf hops to great advantage. This easy-drinking, smooth production has wide appeal, with its copper colour and excellent taste. A favourite with numerous beer lovers. Windsor Knot Pale Ale: (4.5% vol). Brewed originally to commemorate the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, this beer uses Sovereign and Nelson Sauvin hops and has many supporters amongst pale ale devotees. Republika Craft Pilsner: (4.8% vol). This splendid craft beer is one of several productions from the Windsor & Eton Brewery which have won awards. Combinations of Saaz hops, Czech yeast and Pilsner malt produce this full-flavoured delight, which I found very refreshing. 36

Conqueror Black IPA: (5.0% vol). Bringing together Cascade and Pacific Jade whole leaf hops, plus a blend of five speciality malts, this complex and noticeably rich IPA gained great interest from the outset. ‘Superb’, ‘awesome’ and ‘brilliant’ are some of the descriptions attributed to this beer. Wasteland Double IPA: (10.0% vol). Belgian candi sugar is one of the ingredients for this Double IPA with ten different hops, that include some of the best of America and the New World. Another exceptional IPA, which certainly delivers on aroma, mouthfeel and the palate’s enjoyment. Other popular productions include Capital DryHopped Lager and Treason West Coast IPA. Ordering is easy and beers are delivered via courier to anywhere in the UK. Visitors to the brewery are made very welcome. Windsor & Eton Brewery, Duke Street, Windsor, Berkshire, SL4 1SE. Fen Blow By Chrissie Atkinson
J U NE 2 0 2 0
Feel the Fen Blow bey, It rattles the bones Through graves long forgotten, In church yards of stone
Swirls round the bench And kisses the face Of dear Molly Watkins, At peace in her place
Lazy old Easterly Howls like a dog, Then covers the dykes In a blanket of fog
Brucks up the fruit trays Stacked high the markets. Makes pots goo a gutzer, Snaps flowers in baskets
It reddens the hands Travelled from foreign parts Who harvest the land, Picking artichoke hearts.
Snatches the bread From men eating dockey Whilst sat on memorials, Saddened with poppies
Gets up the tails Of the long-legged hares, That run for their lives From the Gamekeeper’s glares
The sky’s blue as Woad dye So, stretch out your hand And feel the Fen Blow, bey For this is Fen Land

How to Back up Your PC to Keep Important Information Safe Later this month Microsoft will be rolling out a Windows 10 Update, which will include new features to help with productivity, security and speed. The update (known as Windows 10 versions 2004 and 20H1) is expected to start rolling out to users at the end of May, (Microsoft has yet to confirm an exact date). Before downloading this new update, we advise you to back up your PC.
There are two main types of backup that you can use to keep your important data safe. The first is ‘file backup’, which allows you to make copies of the files stored on your PC. File History is a handy tool in Windows 10, which allows you to perform regular, scheduled copies of the data on your PC and stores it on an external drive. To set up File History you’ll first need to ensure a secondary drive is connected to your PC: Click the Start button then the Settings button (it looks like a gear and is found in the bottom left corner of the Start menu). Then click Update and security > Back-Up > Add a drive and then choose the drive you’d like to use as a backup. You can now choose which files you want to back up: Click the Start button then the Settings button. Click Update and security > Backup > More options > Add a folder. Choose a folder you want to back up then
click on Choose this folder. If you add the wrong folder or want to remove a folder from the backup list, click the folder in the Back up these folders list then click Remove. You can change how often a backup occurs, as long as the drive is connected: Click the Start button then the Settings button. Click Update and security > Backup > More options. Click the dropdown arrow beneath Back up my files, then click frequency options. You can also change how long the backups are kept on the drive or network by clicking the dropdown arrow beneath Keep my backups, then click a time limit.
REMEMBER THAT ONCE YOUR BACK UP IS FINISHED, YOU MUST DISCONNECT THE EXTERNAL BACKUP DEVICE FROM YOUR PC TO PREVENT RANSOMWARE FROM ATTACKING IT. The other type of backup is a ‘system backup’ or a ‘system image’. This is more complicated as it involves making a backup copy of the entire Windows operating system running on your PC, as well as all your programs, files and settings. If this is something you wish to carry out, please give us a call.

COVID-19 by Christine McGowen
his article is dedicated to those who have lost loved ones – partners, family members, relatives, friends, or colleagues – as a result of this dreadful global pandemic. Our hearts go out to you and we ask you to accept our sincerest condolences.
But, additionally, we must think of those who have lost their jobs at this time through no fault of their own as well as those who have recently started up small businesses and need financial help. There are many people suffering with anxiety and depression, and it is in this time of sadness, grief, and social isolation that we are trying to record some of the positive and good things that have come from our community. Most of us who are elderly have experienced help from family, neighbours, and younger friends. Our community has drawn closer together and folks have got to know new faces of those seeking to be of assistance by shopping, collecting prescriptions and helping with other tasks. Three local groups – initiated and set up by the local community or further afield – have proved a lifeline both to the elderly and those with health problems rendering them especially vulnerable. They are: • The 'HELPING WHITTLESEY' group which helps with shopping, posting mail, collecting prescriptions, any urgent supplies, hot meals, some gardening problems or simply reassurances. Helping Whittlesey is co-ordinated by Deborah Slater who has also organised for a hot meal to be delivered on Wednesdays – with the food being donated by local stores and cooked by The Falcon. Deborah can be reached on her mobile 07843 383368.
• The FACT Bus shopping and delivery service (tel: 01354 661234). Once an order is placed, the staff and volunteers shop at Tesco in March and then deliver to a wide area including Whittlesey. There are various ways to pay and a voluntary £2.50 can be added to assist with their petrol costs. • COVID-19 COORDINATION HUB also helps the over 70s who are self-isolating (many with existing health problems) as well as those who fall within 40

the Government's list of vulnerable groups. This organisation has been set up in partnership with the public and voluntary sectors and the local communities. The hub gives advice on shopping, a friendly phone call, urgent supplies, and other issues. Tel: 01354 654321 or email: covid19@ fenland.gov.uk – 9am to 4pm Mon to Fri and 9am to 12 noon on Sat.
Volunteers take every precaution – washing hands, avoiding direct contact, and leaving shopping on your doorstep – in order to keep everyone safe. Looking to the future, when COVID-19 becomes a thing of the past, there are three things I would love to see: Firstly – our Whittlesey community's maintaining the same level of concern that is currently being shown. Secondly – the current cleanliness of our town, with its litter-free streets & pavements, being maintained. Thirdly – people's continuing awareness of the importance of all our key workers and showing them politeness and consideration at all times, including those working in the care homes industry. The natural world is currently thriving during this pandemic. The air is cleaner with less traffic on the roads as many people have proved they can successfully work from home. Possibly this could lead to the freeing up of office space which could then be converted into living accommodation and sold at reasonable prices to young people starting out on the property ladder and free to the homeless. Nature, it seems, is unaware of the coronavirus and has encroached on unexpected areas with people also being more generally aware of birdsong and the springtime unveiling its beauty. Everyone has had more time to evaluate what is really important in life; family, friends, just being with people who share the same interests. Neither money nor armaments can save anyone from this virus which has spread to the furthest corners of the earth. The world I long to inhabit is the one where love, friendship and kindness are held uppermost in everyone's heart – let us hope that, when this pandemic is finally over it results in an environmentally improved world from both the natural and social aspects.
