Introduction

Welcome to Your January Issue. Inside Highlights

So, here we are in 2021 and a warm welcome from us all. Never before have the words of American columnist and author, William E. Vaughan, sounded so appropriate than right now. He declared, “An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” Well, I’m sure we can all call ourselves pessimists then, as we wave farewell to 2020... and not before time! We’ll all have plenty of memories of the past year, hopefully not all unhappy ones, but I think it gave us all the opportunity to just reflect on what really matters to us in our individual lives. We do take so much for granted on a daily basis, so maybe 2021 will give us many occasions to think more of other people, worse off than ourselves, who battle on with their lives, regardless. I hope your 2021 will bring you all happiness and an eventual reprieve from the COVID-19 stranglehold.

I’m sure I’m not alone in being glad to see the back of 2020... COVID-19 and the resulting restrictions placed on us all has had a profound impact on Fenland, Britain and the World in general. It has caused heartbreak to many families as the virus has hit the health of people, businesses and society in general. Let us all hope that 2021 proves to be a more uplifting experience when as a community we can all once again enjoy the freedoms that we have previously probably all taken for granted. The Discovering team will once again be reflecting all aspects of life in your local community in 2021 when hopefully we will be able to resume our ‘normal’ everyday lives and try to forget the misery of the twelve months we have thankfully left behind...

Super Smoothie THE GREEN

Kickstart your January mornings with a breakfast boost! Don̛t let the colour put you off... this smoothie recipe is packed full of iron, potassium and vitamins and tastes like a tropical dream!

Method Ingredients

Makes one smoothie 1 cup fresh spinach 1 cup water 1/2 cup frozen pineapple 1/2 cup frozen mango 1 medium-sized banana Recipe from www.simplegreen smoothies.com

4

D I S C O V E R I N G

• Tightly pack the spinach in to a measuring cup. • Add the spinach to a blender with the water. Blend together until all chunks are gone. It should resemble green water when blended well. • Add the pineapple, mango and banana to the blender. Using frozen pineapple and mango chills the smoothie down and saves time cutting and prepping. • Blend it all together until smooth and creamy. Depending on your blender, this could take as little as thirty seconds or as long as two minutes. • Pour into a glass and serve immediately to enjoy!

Start the Year

with Hope

At Christians Against Poverty (CAP), we help people who are struggling with problem debt and, no matter how challenging their situation may be, we know there’s always hope. We firmly believe this because we’ve met thousands of people who felt their money problems were hopeless. Now debt free, they’ve seen a genuine difference, had their hope restored, and feel more positive after getting help from CAP. Let’s look at some of the positive changes we can make as we step into 2021 with HOPE.

H

ealth: How can you make getting healthy easy and achievable?

There are some great resources and tools out there to help with improving health and wellbeing. See nhs.uk/live-well/ for a range of ideas aimed at adults or nhs.uk/ change4life for great tips for families. Whatever you’re trying to achieve, break down your ultimate goal into a daily habit for success. If you dream of getting fit enough to run a marathon, then starting a daily habit of running for just ten minutes a day will get you closer to your ultimate goal. Having support from a community will make the most difference. Look for support groups in your area or ask a friend to keep you accountable.

O

pportunity: Could this be the year you seek out new career opportunities?

Perhaps the pandemic has left you out of work, or you feel it’s time for a career change in 2021. There’s a lot of support out there to help with getting the qualifications, skills or training you may need. This includes free college courses to boost your qualifications and skills. Most courses under the Government’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee are available from April. In the meantime, have a look at what's on offer through your local further education college. If you’re not sure what skills you already have, or what you need for the types of jobs available, get advice. Your local Job Club can help you identify and maximise your skills.

P

eople: How can you build deep and lasting friendships with others?

After many months of social distancing, your connections with other people may have felt different from what you’re used to. Maybe

8

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

you’ve lost your job and work friendships along with it. Or maybe you’ve built new connections with the neighbours on your street through helping each other out with shopping deliveries. Professor Dunbar at Oxford University has reported that it’s vital to keep in regular contact to maintain friendship. He advises that so long as we can stay in contact online then our closer, more valued friendships should still survive.

E

mergency funds: Is it time to start building up savings for a rainy day?

You’re probably familiar with the saying ‘saving for a rainy day’, and this is something we’re passionate about at CAP. Even just a few pounds a month soon builds up to create a buffer for unexpected events. Remember, saving isn’t just about putting money away. It can also mean paying less for particular products or services. Look at what you can realistically cut out completely – for example, are you still paying direct debits for services that you no longer use? Next, think about where you could cut back, such as limiting yourself to a treat night once a month instead of weekly. Finally, consider where you can cut costs. Taking the time to seek out better deals can be time well spent and money well saved. For more top money saving tips, visit moneysavingexpert.com. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK charity with more than 580 services across the country delivering debt counselling, money management, job clubs, life skills groups, and support for people breaking life-controlling dependencies. During your first visit the BAcC acupuncturist needs to gain a thorough understanding of your main complaint and your general health and lifestyle.

Acupuncture Can Help With Your Health...

T

This will involve asking questions about your current symptoms and your medical history as well as such things as your sleeping pattern, your appetite and digestion, and your emotional wellbeing.

he British Acupuncture Council says there are more than thirty different health conditions which acupuncture can help with including acne, depression, eczema and osteoarthritis.

And the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) now recommends acupuncture through the NHS for chronic lower back pain.

You may feel that some questions are unrelated to your condition but the information you give will help form a more complete picture of your health and lifestyle. Each patient is unique and two people with the same diagnosis may well receive different acupuncture treatments. For more information contact Toni on 07780 608343.

Toni Wilkes, who trained at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading where she gained a BSc (Hons), is an expert in the practice. Using subtle diagnostic techniques that have been developed and refined for centuries, such as pulse taking and tongue examination among others, acupuncture seeks to focus on the individual as a whole, not the isolated symptoms of a person’s illness and all manifested symptoms are seen in relation to each other.

2021 NEW BEGINNINGS; CARE HOME LOOKS TO THE NEW YEAR WITH A NEW FOCUS ON CELEBRATING TOGETHERNESS

N

obody could have foreseen the globally historic events of 2020 and the devastating crisis which would cast a dark shadow across the social care sector in the United Kingdom. Throughout the year, Orchard House Care Home has striven to maintain as much normality as possibly in the daily lives of the residents they care for. Staff have come together as a team to do all they can to support residents and their loved ones maintain relationships, as well as support them both physically and emotionally through person-centred and meaningful care. No-one could forget the images of the nation coming together every Thursday to ‘clap for carers’ in support of social care and the NHS. This was replicated at Orchard House when, every week, staff, the local community, and supporters would clap the team from outside of the home. In June, the residents organised a surprise ‘Thank You’ party for the team in gratitude of the dedication shown by all of the staff during the first lockdown. The residents were eager to also show their appreciation and wrote their own special messages for staff: “They are always very cheerful in the morning. They bring me lovely, cooked breakfasts. The word carer doesn’t come into it, they are my family!” wrote Heather, and Tony was keen that the carers were rewarded: “The carers are brilliant; nothing is too much trouble.” Another highlight of the year was the celebration of events at the Nursing and Residential Dementia Home in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire to mark what would have been the 2020 Olympics. The month of August also included a Fun Day where residents and staff

alike raised more than £2000 for the Maternity Bereavement Suite at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King’s Lynn. In September, residents showcased their artistic flair in support of National Day of Arts in Care Homes Day by holding an autumnal-themed art exhibition and October saw Spooktacular Hallowe’en activities. Towards the end of the year, new visiting facilities were opened which enable residents and their loved ones to spend time together, safely and in comfort. The team put on a glamorous cocktail party for New Year’s Eve with C some traditional games whilst dressed in their best to celebrate the new year M Y and see off the back of 2020! This month the home is celebrating CM Elvis Presley’s birthday with a themed MY day of music and activities and will also celebrate the 30th Anniversary of CY RCH Care Homes with various activities CMY and events to mark this momentous K occasion. “Throughout the pandemic, everyone has gone above and beyond to ensure the residents at Orchard House remained safe. Both our residents and staff thoroughly enjoyed the events and activities that were put on during 2020. Sport, music, the arts, and culture were used to create opportunities for joyful moments, laughter, reminiscence, and a sense of family community during what have been such dark times for so many. The sense of community we have here amongst not only the residents, but also their loved ones and our team is such a crucial and important part of what makes Orchard House a home. It is this spirit that has got us through 2020 and we are determined to make 2021 a year of togetherness with our families and our community at its heart.” JANUARY 2021

Matters MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

I trust that you all had as good a Christmas as was possible under the circumstances imposed upon us by the COVID-19 conditions and that those in the retail and hospitality sectors were at least able to take advantage of the relaxation of government restrictions over the festive period. 2020 will be a year that none of us will ever forget and the old phrase “ring out the old, ring in the new” has never been more appropriate and welcomed. The past year has been truly awful globally and Whittlesey has been no exception, despite the magnificent spirit shown by many in the community. So, what will 2021 bring locally and what can we look forward to? Although the lockdowns and restrictions have been difficult to negotiate, Whittlesey Town Council has continued to function, having been able to embrace modern technology in the form of Zoom virtual meetings to conduct our committees, council meetings and general administration with the many partners, agencies and other organisations that we need to communicate with in order to keep the town moving forward. Many of you will have been monitoring the progress of the construction of the new bridge over the Kings Dyke railway crossing and I am sure you will agree that the main contractors, Jones Bros, have made exceptionally good progress in delivering this project which is expected to be completed in 2022. After three years' hard work, with at times disappointments and frustration, Whittlesey Town Council, in conjunction with Fenland District Council and the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, have secured funding of £500,000 to start the building of a heritage centre on land gifted by Forterra adjacent to the Kings Dyke Nature Reserve. Additional funding of £218,000 has been obtained to develop a Whittlesey Heritage Trail. 14

editor.whittlesea@discoveringmagazines.co.uk

With the expected backing of partners, such as British Museum, Arts Council, Historic England and Cambridge University of Archaeology, these two projects will produce a history of Whittlesey which will not only be enjoyed by the local community but are expected to contribute to the economy of Whittlesey by attracting visitors nationally and internationally who will have the opportunity of reliving the ‘Story of Whittlesey’ from the Bronze Age to the present day. Whittlesey Town Council has taken the first tentative steps in commissioning an inception report which it is anticipated will produce a strong business case for the eventual construction of a southern relief road which will take away the majority of the heavy traffic heading along the A605 towards our industrial areas in Station Road. A number of electronic warning signs have been purchased by Whittlesey Town Council which have been erected in various parts of the town and the villages to deter speeding and to make our streets and roads safer for all. Finally, at Whittlesey Town Council we are ever conscious of the need for future investment in infrastructure to attract interest from national companies in the retail and hospitality sectors and this will be a primary aim of the council in the forthcoming year. So, may I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous 2021 and beyond. Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader Whittlesey Town Council

LOOKING BACK AT WAR-TIME DEFENCES A booklet is out now which analyses the 1940 anti-invasion defences between Whittlesey and Thorney centred on a local pub. A BIG THANK YOU TO FUND-RAISERS The fund-raising efforts of the Helping Whittlesey Group have been praised by the local branch of The Royal British Legion. Whittlesey branch chairman Mrs Pauline Edge thanked the group for its donation of £2247, commenting: “This has been a difficult year for all and of course the British Legion has suffered great financial losses due to the restrictions in collections and poppy selling etc. So, the donation was even more appreciated. “Once again my thanks go to all the members of the group who participated in this mammoth task of making our town look so fantastic for this special time.” Meanwhile, Susan Taylor, poppy appeal organiser, has reported that more than £6000 was donated to the appeal during the run-up to Remembrance Day. She said: “A group collected together to count the donations given during the run-up to Remembrance Day. I can let you all know that we counted and banked £5401.01 and I thank everyone for their generosity in these difficult times. I previously banked £825 from wreath donations and so together this amounts to £6226.01 to date. Thank you all once again.”

PRIMARY PUPILS COMPETE IN QUIZ Park Lane School proved to be the place to be when it comes to sports knowledge in Whittlesey as Freddie and Imogen battled it out to be the Whittlesey Primary Schools’ Sports Quiz champions. Each of the four primary schools hosted their own heats with two pupils from each school progressing to the knockout stage which was live on Fenland Youth Radio. Freddie pipped Imogen after a tiebreak question to snatch the title. Both children received framed certificates to recognise their achievements presented on behalf of the organisers by Mr Rob Litten, the executive head teacher, with Mrs Janette Bowden handing over the winning shield which she initially donated in 2018. The final stages were organised by Fenland Youth Radio and Whittlesey Sports Association and they were grateful of the support of BGL, Healthy Fenland and the Peterborough & Fenland Referee Development Scheme.

LIONS LIGHT UP THE STREETS Local people came out in force to see the Whittlesey Lions Santa Float tour of the town and villages. The Mayor and Mayoress of Whittlesey were also out and about supporting the hard work of Santa and his helpers as well as some of the excited children.

We Are Sorry For Your Loss

‘Discovering Magazines’ are community magazines, issued monthly and distributed to houses and businesses in the local area. They are read and enjoyed by many people. At a sad time like this, we understand that it is not easy to deal with everything following the loss of a loved one. However, one thing which we feel might help you come to terms with your loss is to share with others some information and some of the many memories you may have. So, if you would like us to include a piece about your loved one, maybe including some photographs, please get in touch with us and we would be delighted to share it with our many readers, (at no cost to yourself!) by publishing it in our next issue.

Church Matters

Stepping into new possibilities!

I

wonder what your hopes for the new year might be? What would you like to see happening in your community? What new possibilities might you be stepping into this year? What new endeavours might you undertake in the year ahead?

For the congregations of St Mary’s and St Andrew’s Whittlesey, St Thomas Pondersbridge and Holy Trinity Coates, these, and questions like them, are the sorts of questions we will be pondering together as the new year begins. Last year, in the midst of everything 2020 had to offer, these Church of England parishes bid a fond farewell to their vicar, the Rev’d Nigel Whitehouse, as he moved onto a new post. During the vacancy, I am joining the four churches to support and help them explore together how they might flourish, grow, and develop. I work as a development officer for parish ministry across the Diocese of Ely, and for the next few months will be investing focused time and energy in supporting our churches in Whittlesey, Pondersbridge and Coates. The question of what we’d like to see developing in the life of the churches of Whittlesey, Pondersbridge and Coates of course is not a question for the congregations alone. We’d love to connect with members of our local 20

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

communities to find out and hear what your passions, hopes and dreams are as well. Your local churches believe fervently that God not only has plans and purposes for them as congregations, but also for the local communities that they love and serve. The building up of community, the bringing down of barriers that divide, the caring for one another in times of need, the sharing together in joy and celebration, these are all things that bless God’s heart. Care for the poor, looking out for the downtrodden, lifting up the faint hearted, all reflect something of the goodness of God. You could add a hundred more examples of things like this that you see in the lives of those around you and within your community. These are the things that as community we share in together, regardless of what drives us, and for the church these are the signs of God’s love and favour made visible in our communities. So again, I wonder what your hopes are for the year? How do you want to see your local community grow, flourish, and develop? What new possibilities might you step into this year? What new endeavours might you undertake in the year ahead? If you live in Coates, Pondersbridge or Whittlesey, then we’d love to hear from you as, who knows, we might share in some of the same hopes and dreams for our communities as you do. Can we control what 2021 brings?

T

he answer to that of course must be a resounding NO!

Humanity is beginning to learn that we live in a finely balanced world. Upset that balance through greed, selfishness or indifference and nature has a nasty habit of fighting back. It doesn’t take much working out to realise that the world is in a mess. I never have, or ever will, be a doom and gloom merchant, but neither do I bury my head in the proverbial sand and pretend that nothing is wrong, or that it’s someone else’s fault. I face up to what is, then have the courage and determination to take hold of every opportunity that comes along. I grew up in a home where money was scarce, but love was in abundance. I was good at sports, especially javelin and swimming, but turning professional was out of the question. I needed to leave school as early as possible to help the family finances. While I resented that certain opportunities would never be available to me, I knew that I could do nothing to change this. But I could change the

J A NUA RY 2021

way I faced my future. I could either choose a

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH

path of bitterness and blaming others, or I could choose to trust that God had my welfare close to his heart, and he would help me lead a fulfilled life. This has certainly happened. In the Bible is a beautiful Psalm which many will be familiar with, whether they attend church or not. Psalm 23 6: Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. In front of you today may be mountains too high to climb, or situations too impossible to solve. But, behind you is goodness and mercy. All we need do is stop, turn round, and take hold of what’s following us. Things can be different. Your Garden

January Gardening Tips

J

anuary is one of those months when there is so little to do on the allotment or garden as, more often than not, the soil is either frozen or waterlogged and should generally be left. However, you can still finish winter digging, weather permitting. Well-rotted manure or organic material can be added to the soil surface and it will become incorporated naturally. Also, a good idea when you are digging is to apply lime to the surface at 100g per square metre (3oz per square yard) especially if you grew brassicas the year before. Getting the soil prepared now will save time feeding later in the year and will often enhance crop growth and yield. If you have a greenhouse, cloches, or space in the house, then now is a good time to plant a few seeds ready for the planting out season. Onion, leek, tomato, chilli and aubergine seeds are a few that can be planted now to give them a good start. At this time of year, rhubarb can be forced: what could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb harvested in late February? Firstly, dig some manure around the roots and then cover them using pots or an upturned bucket, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. To speed up the process of forcing, you can also insulate the pot by covering the outside

22

D I S C O V E R I N G

Whittlesea

of it with straw, bubble wrap or old carpet. Crowns which have been used for forcing should not be harvested in summer or in the following year, because the forcing process weakens the plant and the stems will not grow as strongly. Towards the end of the month, seed potatoes should be available and you can start chitting them ready for planting: put them rose-side uppermost and use old egg boxes or seed trays. Other jobs include: • prune apple and pear trees but not stone fruits such as cherry and damson; they should be summer pruned. • plant bare-rooted trees and bushes. • support Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli. • protect plants from cold and check stakes and ties. •

start a ‘bean trench’ by digging down about 60cm, add a layer of newspaper and then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste, cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down.

And if the weather is foul, sit by the fire with a cuppa, or other warming beverage and plan for the year ahead, read gardening books and order from seed catalogues. Happy 2021...let’s hope that it’s a fruitful one!

When January rolls around, why not include your home (which has been working hard for you all year) in your New Year resolutions? While Safe Local Trades has members across many disciplines, (painting and decorating, plastering, electrician, kitchen/bathroom fitting, carpentry, handyman, carpet/upholstery cleaners, window/ conservatory fitting etc) many are already reporting bookings up until March 2021. Many tried and tested traders will be busy, so don’t delay in getting in touch to secure a slot. Some projects, like a new kitchen for example, may be subject to a longer lead-in time; there is the quote to agree, designs to finalise, products to order and then securing the availability of a great kitchen-fitter. Equally, if you are looking to sell your home come January, then time is of the essence if you require some property pick-me-ups and to stay ahead of the game. Interestingly, according to research, a downstairs loo, built-in storage (like wardrobes and cupboards), UPVC double glazing, a lawned garden and separate shower cubicle rank in the top five home improvement features to attract buyers. But what do you have planned for the New Year? Here are a few jobs to think about – and Safe Local Trades has someone to fit every bill in the Peterborough, Stamford, Huntingdon areas and the wider ‘PE postcode’. • Most things get worn out or look tired eventually, and carpets and flooring are no exception. Replace them or give them a new lease of life with a deep clean. • Painting and decorating – make 2021 the year you give your home a bright, fresh look. • Home security – protect your property with CCTV or intruder surveillance/security alarm systems/PIR external lighting. • Garden landscape and maintenance – think ahead to the summer months. Give your garden a spring makeover and get your project booked in now to beat the rush. • Extending your home - whether you desire a conservatory or a new home office or study. • Window cleaning – add some sparkle to your home, even in the winter months, with bright and gleaming windows and doors. Our tried-and-tested tradespeople are just a click away at www.safelocaltrades.com JANUARY 2021

Finance

Investing Responsibly by Eamonn Dorling

• How does the company treat their employees? • What is their policy on diversification and equality? • What is the net impact of their carbon footprint in relation to UK objectives? • What environmental impact will the organisation have? • What are the core values of the organisation? For simplicity in making a few points I will focus on the impact that electric vehicles might have over the next nine years. Many will be aware the UK Government has pledged to no longer allow new cars that feature a diesel or petrol engine after the year 2030 (hybrid vehicles may continue for a further five years).

Maybe you would expect a company to stop once the profit calculation exceeds the pass mark. In future, this will no longer be enough – organisations, investors financial advisers and pension companies (to name a few) will all be held to account across wider issues than a balance sheet.

Therefore, the most likely change will be that soon a new car will be electric, although other solutions are potentially possible. Again, for the sake of simplicity allow me to assume the first scenario.

I can think of one manufacturer featuring fantastic vehicles with few gripes more substantial than the quality of their door handles where the staff exit reviews are throwing up all sorts of issues. This could finally end up on the balance sheet – so when selecting your investments make sure your adviser is totally switched on to environments, social and governance (ESG) investments – because the landscape is changing.

Existing manufacturers of vehicles have been working towards this for several years, but they will probably need to adjust some of their timelines. Of course, they could just carry on producing vehicles that will not comply – what do you suppose will happen to those companies and their share price? On that basis, investment will be needed, and investors in those companies will need to satisfy themselves that the business plan is sustainable and will yield profits that make shareholding worthwhile. Loans to companies will need to be on the basis that the company will pay interest throughout the period of the loan. That is one aspect of investment research. Then some other filters need to be applied; they might include:

Matters RAIL PARTNERSHIP SCOOPS NATIONAL AWARDS

A partnership which champions community rail across Fenland is celebrating after scooping two national rail awards. The Hereward Community Rail Partnership (CRP) beat off strong nationwide competition to win the awards at the 16th annual Community Rail Awards. The awards, organised by Community Rail Network, were delivered as an online gala evening, with 550 guests, including volunteers, officers, industry leaders and government representatives. The Hereward CRP, which empowers community rail initiatives on the Hereward Line between Ely and Peterborough and at its railway stations at Whittlesea, March and Manea, won the runnerup award in the marketing and communications category for its online consultations. One such consultation last year allowed the public to choose their preferred waiting stations at

Whittlesea and Manea stations, which have been subsequently installed. More recently, a consultation on the redesign of a community building at March station had to be swiftly changed due to COVID-19, but the partnership’s “expertise and timely response” has allowed the project to stay on track for completion in Spring 2021. The Hereward CRP was also crowned winner in the same category along with Greater Anglia and other CRPs in East Anglia for the joint ‘Room with a View’ project. The project saw promotional videos created for eight separate railway lines across the CRPs involved, with the aim of attracting more people to take days out on local branch lines. Paul Nelson, chairman of the Hereward CRP, added: “It has been an extraordinary year for the CRP, as it has been for all of us, but I’m delighted that we have been able to rise to the challenge, ensuring that community engagement remained at the forefront of a redesign project at March station.”

NEW YEAR, NEW PLANS – By Steve Barclay MP

A

s we start 2021, I’m sure many are hoping that this year will be better than the last. I think New Year resolutions may be very different this year following the experiences of 2020. As I write, the vaccine for coronavirus has been recently approved and the vaccination programme is well underway. As a member of the Government’s Vaccine Taskforce, we hope this will turn the tide of this pandemic although, undoubtedly, there will be some hard months to come. It is a proud moment for the UK as the first country in the West to distribute a regulatory approved COVID-19 vaccine. This month I have been in close discussion with ministerial colleagues on the Government’s High Street Fund, on which March has bid for funding. I hope to have positive news on this very shortly and have lobbied strongly to ensure we are one of the areas prioritised for funding. In Wisbech I know many people locally remain worried about the proposals for the enormous incinerator. Information supplied by the developer MVV still doesn’t adequately address many key questions about the impact on health, traffic, the environment, the height of the chimney and the rail link, as well as exactly where the waste will be coming from and by which routes. I would urge the developer to share the results of feedback from the October meetings and the results of their assessments and impact

reports as soon as possible, rather than waiting for the formal statutory consultation in March. I believe a facility of this size is wholly unsuitable and will continue to work along with Wisbech Town Council, Fenland District Council, Cambridgeshire County Council, and many more to oppose this flawed proposal. I’m pleased the Combined Authority has approved more funding for proposals in Whittlesey and Chatteris as part of the Market Towns Investment Programme. The £500,000 funding to help develop a Heritage Centre in Whittlesey based around the spectacular Bronze Age finds at Must Farm, alongside £218,169 to create a new Heritage Walk to explore the history and heritage of Whittlesey will be a great addition and a boost to the visitor economy. The £92,000 for Chatteris town centre to improve the appearance of street furniture and enable refurbishment works is welcome support. Similarly, it’s good to see the Fenland Stations Regeneration project continuing to press ahead. Improvements to waiting shelters, cycle parking, and lighting have already taken place at March, Manea and Whittlesey. Car park improvements at March and Manea and a redesign of the building on Platform 1 at March including the ticket office, waiting room, toilets and shop, are due to start in February. Work is ongoing on a plan for Whittlesea station car park. I will continue to work closely with the Combined Authority to ensure that funding allocated by

www.discoveringdirectory.co.uk government to them in turn reaches schemes in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire. In my last column I highlighted the Living Sport awards and I’m delighted that March Bears Rugby Club Chairman, Edwin Fey, was crowned Community Volunteer of the Year 2020. I’m a great believer in the benefit of sport and physical activity, not just for health and fitness but mental wellbeing too. That’s why I wholeheartedly support Fenland District Council’s decisions to develop a cycling, walking and mobility strategy. The Government has allocated £2 billion of funding for cycling and walking schemes and I am working to ensure we get our share. The flat landscape lends itself to cycling in a way that few other parts of the country do and given the poorer health outcomes here than in many other parts of the county, this is an ideal way to get people exercising. Electric bikes also offer flexibility for those who want to cycle part of a journey. Schemes already under consideration for Government funding via the county council include improvements to the Freedom Bridge roundabout for pedestrians and cyclists in Wisbech, cycle improvement to make connections between Whittlesey town centre and residential areas, and provision of secure cycle lockers at the Horsefair in Wisbech. However, there is much more that could be done, and I will work with local councillors to secure more funding.
