JUNE 2021
Welcome to your June issue... Twelve months ago, I wrote, “Spring has come and will soon be gone, with some signs that normality is not too far away. Optimists are seeing some hope, as certain restrictions are being lifted.” Well, that “normality” is still tantalisingly just around the corner for many of us. Yes, hugging is now back on the agenda, face masks are starting to become less evident, indoor restaurant and pub visits are now possible, (handy bearing in mind our unpredictable summer weather!) and many families may well be tempted to consider overseas travel at last. Whatever we may have been going through in recent months, let us all remember that June 20th is Father’s Day and the opportunity to shower that special one with hugs and gifts. To my dad and to my husband Chris, who I love more and more each day, I send all my love. Keep healthy everyone and stay safe.

With more and more people receiving their vaccinations against coronavirus it seems that barring a flare up in cases caused by a new variant we could be looking at a relatively normal summer. The recent lockdowns have made me reflect on a number of things as I’ve been incarcerated at home, some which I will share with you. I’ve discovered: I like cake; barring some rare exceptions most television programmes are pretty dreadful; football played in empty stadiums is boring; drinking at home is not half as enjoyable as drinking in pubs; Zoom meetings are useful but will not be missed as we return to face-to-face discussions; and I love walking my dog even more than I previously thought. As I write this, we are expecting the umpteenth day of rain, so all I hope is that now there is light at the end of the coronavirus tunnel, it coincides with the arrival of sunshine so that when I leave my home I am no longer forced to dress up like some sort of North Pole explorer…

Have you thought about asking your existing clients to share a case study with you?

omething a bit more in-depth than a review. You can lead the direction of the case study with your questions. For example, ask why the client came to you in the first place and what their pain points were? The middle of your case study needs to look at what you did for the client and how your service or product resolved these pains. The case study then ends with a testimonial from the client about how the service or product has helped them. There is no cost for a case study as you are speaking to an existing happy client. The case study will then show other potential clients how you help resolve the pain point they have too.

in is extremely popular and gains more and more interest with each passing year. New brands become available very regularly. Gin’s basic flavour is from juniper berries, and the making of gins dates from the Middle Ages. Many different styles of gin are available today, including very aromatic and flavoured productions. Gin cocktails also prove to be increasing in popularity and ‘Gin & Tonic’ (a long-standing favourite), Singapore Sling, plus Tom Collins and many others, are favourite concoctions, regularly enjoyed.
The award-winning, LAVA Spirits Co offers signature productions to an excellent standard. COFFEE GIN, plus COFFEE ORANGE GIN are both produced utilising South American Arabica coffee beans to great advantage. Laura Bridge, the company’s founder became inspired, then dedicated and committed to create flavoured gins of an exceptional quality. pleasures enjoy the rich, balanced flavours of coffee and gin. COFFEE ORANGE GIN (37.5% vol) (World Gin Awards, 2021, Best English Flavoured Gin), again, is a premium London Dry Gin, which pairs with the finest South American Arabica coffee, perfectly. Fresh orange zest is the addition for this production. Enticingly appealing on the nose, the mouthfeel and palate sensation are duly rewarded with the effect that follows. I understand this to be a UK first, with the combination of flavours, for this gin, working extremely well indeed. The fresh flavour of roasted coffee beans, complemented with a sweet citrus addition from the orange zest, makes a very impressive creation. The LAVA Spirits Co sources and blends the finest ingredients to produce these outstanding, flavoured gins, which can be enjoyed neat, with ice and/or mixer, as well as in the creation of fabulous cocktails. Your Garden
G
JUNE GARDENING TIPS
arden pests and weeds are the main bugbear of the vegetable gardener and keeping on top of weeds is so important for the health of your crops. To keep the weeds at bay, hoe regularly, even if you can’t see any obvious sign of weeds, spread mulches, or use lightproof membrane- this will also prevent moisture loss in dry weather.
Garden pests can have a devastating effect on crops and, with the latest concerns over chemical pest control, an interesting alternative is using nematodes. They attack soil-borne insect pests with no harmful effects on earthworms, plants, animals, or humans, making it an environmentally friendly solution. You can use water-in nematodes against the following: • Slugs, ant nests (dependent on soil temperature). • Leatherjackets, chafer grubs (in April and October, to coincide with vulnerable parts of their life cycles). • Carrot fly, cabbage root fly, cutworms, onion fly, caterpillars, gooseberry sawfly, thrips and codling moth. As the month progresses, thinning and planting out to final positions will start to overtake sowing as the main activity as this month offers the last opportunity to sow many seeds. However, you can continue to sow quick growing salad crops every few weeks for a continuous supply. Utilise space between slower growing crops, which will maximise your use of growing space. Jobs include: • Plant out vegetables that you have grown from seed but make sure you harden them off before planting out in their final position.
8
D I S C O V E R I N G
Whittlesea
• Thin out seedlings and plant others in their final growing positions. • Earth up potatoes and, towards the end of the month, harvest earlies. • Cut down broad beans and peas just above the surface and use for compost, but leave the roots in the ground as a good source of nitrogen. • Once you are sure that frosts are over, you can plant out the more tender crops such as aubergines, peppers, chillies, courgettes, marrows and squashes. • Succession sow beetroot, salad crops, carrots and, later in the month, Florence fennel. Traditionally, Florence fennel is sown after the longest day, June 21st, as it is less likely to bolt. If the weather is dry, then water your seed drills well before sowing – this way the young plants will develop a good root system. • Last chance to sow runner beans and main crop carrots. • Brussels sprouts, leeks, sprouting broccoli and the last of the summer, autumn and red cabbages, and the first of winter cabbages can also be planted. • Protect carrots with insect-proof netting and net brassicas to deter pigeons. • Sweetcorn can be planted out and, as it is self-pollinating, it is better sown closely in a block. Mark out a square or rectangle and plant at about 35-40cm (14-18inches) apart in each direction. • You can now start enjoying harvesting some of the fruits of your labour – peas should be ready now, also gooseberries, strawberries and beetroot but stop harvesting asparagus this month. Happy planting!

Mortgage Advice
Re-mortgaging - Why Now Might be the Right Time for You ADVICE FROM CAREN PALMER-WELCH, MORTGAGE AND PROTECTION BROKER
I
n the current economic climate, homeowners may be unsure when is the right time to look for a new mortgage. Is the time right now? Should you remain with your current mortgage? It is a particularly important decision that could impact your finances by thousands of pounds every year. Re-mortgaging is the process of getting a new mortgage on your property, either with your current or a new lender.
But before we look at the ‘when?’ you need to first consider the ‘why?’ • Is your current deal due to end or has finished, and you have been moved on to your lender’s costly standard variable rate (SVR)? • Are you looking to save money?
When your promotional period ends, you will automatically revert to your lender’s standard variable rate (SVR). This is often higher than your current rate and could cost you thousands in interest over the lifetime of your mortgage.
2. “Rising property prices.” Property prices have been rising recently despite the pandemic and this could mean it’s a good time to re-mortgage. Why? Your loan-to-value ratio will be lower which could mean lower interest rates. If prices fall again, your LTV ratio becomes higher, and you may not have access to this lower rate.
3. “My financial situation has changed.”
• Do you want to do some home improvements?
Whether for the better or for worse, reviewing your mortgage can help you save money.
Whatever your reason, it is important to obtain professional advice to discuss your options and identify the mortgage deal to meet your needs.
4. “I want to raise capital.”
Reasons why re-mortgaging now could save you or make you money. 1. “I’m nearing the end of my promotional period.”
Do you want to carry out home Improvements, buy a second property or fund university? Re-mortgaging could help you do this. Now is a good time to talk about a new mortgage deal.
*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

we were very hot in the absence of any wind. We passed lakes and waterfalls, everywhere we looked the scenery was amazing. Our guide did a great job of keeping us all motivated. “At the summit the air was so fresh and pure, the sky was blue, and we could see mountains and hills for miles; it really was an experience of a lifetime. “Coming down was slightly quicker; we had a much fuller view of the scenery as we were facing the open rather than the mountain.” The duo’s time was nine hours and twelve minutes and Deborah commented: “We felt elated! For two oldies, I think we did OK.”

DYNAMIC DUO’S CLIMB FOR CASH Intrepid Whittlesey women Deborah Slater and Diane Ahearne have raised £1500 for Defibrillators For All by doing a sponsored climb of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. The duo raised the funds to help replace and update some local defibrillators and cabinets by reaching the summit which is 1345 metres above sea level and is the highest land in any direction for 459 miles. In April, as part of training for climbing Ben Nevis, they climbed Kinder Scout in the Peak District, at 636 metres above sea level. Deborah said: “The climb up Kinder Scout was hard work with lots of scrambling across the rocks. We hardly saw another climber and it felt very remote. Once completed, we felt ready to test ourselves on Ben Nevis. “We invested in a guide and were joined by three others. Our guide made sure we were carrying the correct kit (my bag weighed fifteen pounds) and we set off. The constant steady gradient soon made me realise it wasn’t going to be easy. Initially 16

Coates author Peter Llidon has a new book out. The Attendance Card, available in kindle, paperback and hardback, tells the story of a young, headstrong, aspiring journalist who makes a decision to investigate the mysterious life of a lonely local recluse, an eccentric man who has died through self-neglect. Tom’s journey takes him from rural East Anglia to the old fading industrial heartland of the West Riding of Yorkshire, and on to London. He meets a contingent of people who have one thing in common – they all attended the funeral of the dead man, with no apparent reason. Tom hears about the industrial strife which restricted Britain in the 1970s; the Iranian Revolution and the amazing consequences to two of the people in Tom’s investigation; the British victory of the Falklands War; and a background of industrial work environments. He also learns about them as individuals and begins to understand the fateful event that brought them all together. He sees men’s flaws and their virtues, finds love, and finally works out his own path in life. For more information contact Peter at peterllidon@gmail.com JUNE 2021
MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR At a recent meeting of Whittlesey Town Council, I was honoured to be re-elected as Mayor and leader for a further twelve months with Cllr Mrs Dee Laws also being re-elected as my deputy. The past twelve months have been difficult for us all but let me assure you that the work of Whittlesey Town Council has not ceased whilst we have been in a series of lockdowns. With the advent of modern technology in the form of Zoom and Teams virtual meetings the full council has met every month with almost a full attendance of councillors at every meeting. It has also been noticeable that there has been a greater engagement with the public at these meetings. Obviously, it is easier to contribute from your sofa than to physically travel to meetings in the council chamber, but nevertheless it is heartening that the public is so interested in what is happening in their town. At one particular meeting we had fifty-two participants attending, which is by far a record in my time as a councillor. Similarly, the finance and policy, planning and projects committees have met on a monthly basis and other groups including property working and HR groups have continued to function satisfactorily. All our town councillors are assigned to what we term as outside bodies or other organisations in the community where they regularly attend their meetings and maintain close liaison with those organisations. This also has continued by virtual means throughout the past difficulties. Information is always freely available on the town council website which can be accessed through www.whittleseytowncouncil.gov.uk and I am obliged to Fenland Youth Radio for their support
in providing information from Whittlesey Town Council for the town. Lastly, and certainly not least, my appreciation goes to our hard-working town clerk, Mrs Sue Piergianni, who throughout has been for the most part working alone at Peel House to provide a service to the general public whilst maintaining a high standard of administration for Whittlesey Town Council as a whole. Our district and county councillors have also been working very hard to ensure that Whittlesey has maintained a full relationship with the many officials and agencies that are necessary to provide the facilities required for our public. In a similar fashion to Whittlesey Town Council, our representatives at Fenland Hall and Shire Hall have met virtually on a regular basis to conduct essential business. Following the recent elections my congratulations go to Chris Boden and David Connor for retaining their county council seats and to our newly elected district councillor Jason Mockett who has also been elected to the Whittlesey Town Council along with Haq Nawaz which brings our number of councillors back up to the full complement of fourteen. Finally, my thanks to everyone in the town and villages who have weathered the storm during the terrible COVID epidemic and we look forward to a brighter future for all in the days to come. Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council

A Pint in The Pub with Your Pup Yay – it's time to go back to the pub and for our lockdown puppies it is likely to be their first visit! As much as this sounds idyllic, your vision and reality are likely to be worlds apart. So, let's start training now. All of our training is a game, creating fun and motivation to repeat the behaviours we require. Teaching a dog to settle When we go to a pub or a coffee shop, we want our dogs to settle down and lie quietly and calmly on a blanket. However, rarely do owners ever train this, it is just expected. From a dog’s point of view, the pub is full of people, children running around, food and drinks and quite likely other dogs and birds etc, all super exciting or, for some dogs, scary! We start teaching this behaviour at home, in a safe, low distraction environment where your dog has a much higher chance of being successful, thus being rewarded and thus creating a strong likelihood that the behaviour will be of value to your dog so will be repeated. Initially we teach contact with the bed - the bed is the outcome. The bed (can be a mat or a blanket or piece of vet bed), should have a different sensation under paw to the surrounding floor. After practice, the dog will recognise food is given when his paws are on the bed. Equipment needed: a transportable bed/mat/blanket, rewards (lots of small, tasty treats), a marker (a verbal word such as “yes”, “good”, “bingo”, or a clicker). 1. Place the bed directly in front of you on the floor, at least an arm's-length away. You should be able to give your dog a treat when they are standing on the mat without either of you moving around.
mat to either sniff it or place themselves in front of you for another treat. As soon as their feet are on the mat, mark with your word or clicker, feed a treat on the mat and throw another treat gently behind them. Repeat a few times. 4. The next stage is to add a small amount of duration to the time the dog is on the bed before they get a treat. So, this time wait for a second or two whilst your dog is on the bed before marking and rewarding. 5. To help ensure the dog knows the rewards are linked to standing on the bed we are going to change where we deliver the rewards. So, imagine you are standing at the top of the bed at twelve o’clock, behind the dog is six o'clock and three and nine o’clock are to the right or left. 6. Now as your dog arrives on the bed from six o'clock you are now going to work around the clock face marking and rewarding for returning to the bed but also throwing your treats around the clock face, one through to eleven. Practise each position on the clock a few times before moving on. The hardest reward position is behind you at six o’clock and the easiest at twelve o’clock. 7. Next, move the mat away bit by bit and practise the training again. This will add some distance between you and the bed and ultimately your dog. This will allow you to pop your dog’s mat under pub tables or corners of cafes etc. Just like humans, some dogs do not enjoy loud, busy, sociable environments. Please keep this in mind before taking your dog to a busy pub/cafe.
2. Place the bed on the floor. Your dog is likely to investigate it, and as your dog arrives on the mat, toss a small treat almost simultaneously. This will help to get your dog to stay on the mat rather than walking over it.
Our online training is here to stay – our classes, from puppy to adult, from scent work to tricks, and our behaviour advice sessions have proven to be faster and quicker when taught in the perfect teaching environment that is your dog’s safe, low distraction classroom of your home!
3. After your dog has eaten a treat, gently toss another treat behind them. Now wait. When your dog has eaten the treat he is likely to return to the

Using Tried and Tested Professionals is the Key to Locking Out Rogue Traders! By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades It seems that it is not only driveways, garden clearance and replacement guttering (to name a few) that are target areas for the cowboy builders and scammers. Another trade that has fallen foul of the rogue traders is locksmiths, as highlighted on BBC One's “Rip Off Britain” on May 10th, 2021. The trade is unregulated which means that anyone can buy a kit and then advertise themselves as a locksmith. According to recent surveys: • More than 800 complaints were made about rogue locksmiths over the past year. • In two thirds of cases customers are being overcharged by £200 or more. • In one example, a locksmith quoted a price of £49, but the final bill came to £1,604. Here are a few tell-tale signs that a so-called locksmith may be far from reputable: 1) Calls are answered by a call centre which makes it difficult to obtain details for the locksmith doing the job. This can also mean you don’t know who is doing the work as jobs are often subcontracted. 2) The company is ranked at or towards the top of online advertising listings. As they have paid to be there, this isn’t an indication about the quality of their work. 3) The locksmith is vague about their experience and they may be reluctant to provide feedback about previous jobs or recommendations. 4) Drilling is a method of destructive entry and is only used as a last resort when all other methods haven’t worked with cylinders. Many rogues start with the drill and this should ring alarm bells. Safe Local Trades are lucky to have our very own reputable and vetted locksmith as a member. Locksmith Doctor Ltd’s Gary Braesyde offers the key to a professional and successful solution, in more ways than one – with no call-out fees and no hourly labour – just good honest pricing and always going the extra mile for customers. Store his number 07539 154722 in your phone now, in case you need it for that emergency. Gary is now also offering a special offer – buy one and get another half price on all lock ranges. Nicola Opens New Beauty Business
A
success story from a new business specialising in semi-permanent make-up treatments.
Beautifully Defined by Nicola was launched by Nicola Paterson, a fully trained semi-permanent make-up artist. The business is located within the Enhance Beauty Salon in Eastgate, Whittlesey, and after planning to open in November last year has enjoyed seeing more new faces as lockdown measures have lifted. Beautifully Defined by Nicola offers semi-permanent eyeliner, lip liner and lip blush (gloss & go lips), powder brows, Ombré brows, hair strokes brows and microblading treatments with new services planned to be added over the coming months. Nicola, who is from Whittlesey and currently lives here with her husband and family, is excited to bring this service to her hometown. Nicola (38) said: “I’ve been working as a Registered Pharmacy Technician for nearly twenty years and love my job but have always wanted to work for
Nicola x myself. With my new career I get to meet new people, and help them to look and feel great. I love the atmosphere of working in a salon and the sense of happiness and wellbeing it brings. “I am so pleased to have set up my business although the timing could have been better due to the lockdown. I can offer a range of semipermanent make-up treatments which are virtually pain-free and will last for between twelve and eighteen months. Also being part of the Enhance Beauty Team is exciting as I have known Michelle (the owner) since we were young so working together as adults is amazing.” Nicola is offering £100 off when you book for lips in July. Appointments are in demand so call today to book your slot. You can contact Beautifully Defined by Nicola at 5 Angel House, Eastgate, Whittlesey PE7 1SE Tel: 07414 907186 Email: beautifullydefinedbynicola@gmail.com or search Facebook.

Semi-permanent make-up Semi-permanent make-up is a quick and easy procedure that is practically painless and which can give you a perfectly natural, made-up look, without spending hours in front of the mirror every day. Sometimes referred to as micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, semi-permanent make-up is a treatment that works by injecting tiny amounts of pigment into the superficial layers of your skin, using a fine vibrating needle. DO YOU NEED TO SEE A PODIATRIST? Podiatry is simply another name for chiropody. It is a branch of medicine devoted to the study and diagnosis, and medical treatment, of disorders of the foot, ankle, and lower leg. The name changed from chiropody to podiatry in 1993, so that the UK was in line with all other English speaking countries, in using the internationally recognised name for a foot specialist. A podiatrist will usually have attended a university for three years, to study full time for a degree in podiatry.
with the pain of ingrown toenails, or corns and calluses. Many feel a trip to the beauty salon is all that’s needed. Covering up a fungal nail infection, with a splash of colourful polish, does not resolve the underlying problem.
Here are four reasons to see a podiatrist:
4) Need footwear advice? – Feet come in all shapes and sizes. Choosing suitable footwear, somewhat, determines your long-term foot health. A number of people have developed problems with their feet over time as a result of wearing poorly fitting shoes. The right pair of shoes should effectively hug the foot and provide a high-level of comfort.
1) Give your feet an MOT – Even if your feet are in a generally good state, an appointment with a podiatrist, every so often, can help to keep your feet in tip-top condition. It’s easy to overlook problems with verrucas, cracked heels, and ingrown toenails; however, these issues can eventually result in painful conditions and infections. A podiatrist can treat a range of issues including corns, calluses, athlete’s foot, foot odour, flat feet and bunions. 2) Manage the pain in your feet – Putting up with foot pain is uncomfortable and unnecessary. A visit to your local podiatrist is all that’s needed to nurse your feet back to full health. Don’t suffer in silence
Follow us on Facebook
3) Do you suffer from foot odour? – It’s common to suffer from foot perspiration and odours from timeto-time. However, if the problem persists, seeking expert advice and treatment from a podiatrist can help resolve the issues quickly and effectively.
March Podiatry is following all current health and safety guidelines, to ensure we are COVID secure in order to provide your treatment as safely as possible.

STAY SAFE By Taking Regular COVID Tests
R
esidents in Whittlesey are being urged to get twice-weekly rapid COVID tests.
The move is an important step forward to meet the aims of the national roadmap, allowing everyone to move safely out of lockdown. Twice-weekly rapid testing is a vital tool in identifying cases of COVID-19 that would otherwise be missed. With one in three people with coronavirus showing no symptoms and potentially spreading it without knowing, rapid testing helps to identify positive cases quickly, preventing the spread of infection. There are several ways you can access rapid testing. You can take a test at one of the rapid testing sites locally. Your employer may be offering testing in the workplace. You can also collect tests to complete at home or order tests to be delivered to your home. Secondary school pupils are also being asked to take a twice-weekly test. Dr Liz Robin, Director of Public Health for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: “Getting into the habit of twice-weekly testing as part of our everyday lives will help us all to keep each other safe. Alongside the ongoing vaccine rollout, it will help us to move forward with the roadmap out of lockdown.” You can find out more about all of these options at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/ rapidtesting or www.peterborough.gov.uk/ rapidtesting

Your Resourcefulness, Your ‘Conscious Score’ and Your Two Lives Is it fair to say life is challenging at the best of times? And now the pandemic has come, life is even more a matter of survival – not just directly from the disease, but economically, psychologically...
E
very one of us has an invisible ‘score’ for how conscious we are. Please don't buy into any notions of conscious living being something flowery for spiritual types, because it is actually one and the same as your own capacity to be true to yourself. ‘Conscious’ just means aware of what is motivating us and driving our actions in a given moment.
may be lucky to be even thirty percent ‘conscious’; unable to be more than thirty percent true to themselves. This is a major inhibitor to living, and even more of a disadvantage when a global pandemic strikes! Where is the emotional and psychological resiliency? Their capacity to tap into their own natural resourcefulness will have been hugely compromised.
When people judge and scold us – usually as children – we shut off parts of our true selves and instead unwittingly take on a false self role in order to gain their approval. This becomes the ‘unconscious’ – a ‘bag’ in which all the unacceptable parts of ourselves are repressed.
Everyone has a ‘conscious score’ between these two extremes. If we then imagine a life in which we had known nothing but unconditional love and acceptance for who we are since birth – domestically, socially, environmentally, culturally – we would be one hundred percent conscious, one hundred percent true to self, with access to one hundred percent of our innate resourcefulness. We would also be unrecognisable from the people we see ourselves as now. Yet this is the more real ‘us’.
If you imagine a cross-section of society, some people will be brought up in a very loving manner, with a kind school culture and an empowering community environment. These people may have ‘Conscious Scores’ of eighty or ninety percent or maybe more. For these people, they are rarely ‘in their head’, find life relatively easy, are almost certainly comfortable in their own skin, and probably wonder what all the fuss is about. Contrast that with a child who is brought up by abusive parents, an authoritarian school culture which psychologically beats them down and a community that relentlessly manipulates them (perhaps for profit, e.g., incessant television advertising) and you see an adult emerge who
The good news is that we can reclaim every last bit of that. Kissing Consciousness is all about closing this gap; helping people to close the gap wherever they wish to. In the next article I’ll show you how, but before then you can also listen to this recent, fifteen-minute radio interview I gave explaining all of this context in more detail. From
Falkirk to the Fens
Scottish visitor to the Fens Brian Johnston recalls how his homeland has made its mark on the local area...
L
ast August I had the good fortune to spend a few days with my family in Fenland. We stayed at a superb, rented holiday home which shared the beautiful garden of a lovely couple in Ugg Mere Court Road, Ramsey Heights. The trip down south was primarily to pick up our new addition, Louis, a Maltese puppy from Wisbech. My wife and I, along with my daughter, also planned to tour most of the market towns in the area and meet up with our Norfolk friends in Ely. Coming from Falkirk in Central Scotland, which at one time was one of the most prolific iron producing towns in Britain, I was delighted to come across some fine examples of Scottish cast iron products dotted around Fenland. My interest in iron products stems back from relatives who worked in the local foundries; my paternal grandfather being a blacksmith and an uncle a sand cast moulder.

I can often be seen eyes to the ground looking at kerb drains and manhole covers for the foundry maker’s name, which I simply pass off to curious onlookers as being a ‘drain spotter’. In Ramsey itself along the Great Whyte stands a large red oval shaped Royal Mail pillar box with two separate posting apertures. The foundry which produced it was Machan Engineering of Denny, a small town next to Falkirk. Machan was the last supplier of traditional cast iron style pillar boxes to the Royal Mail, only ceasing production in 2015 due to a sharp decline in orders. Other examples of the same oval style can be seen outside the main post offices in Whittlesey and Wisbech. Pillar boxes were first trialled on the island of Jersey, another firm favourite of ours as a holiday destination, having visited now around ten times and well worth a visit. Just a stone’s throw away and also in the Great Whyte stands the impressive clock tower, erected in 1886 in memory of Rt Hon Edward Fellowes, 1st Baron of Ramsey. The inscription names the casting foundry as one W. MacFarlane of Glasgow. They were also later known as Saracen, a large producer of fine iron products including bandstands and drinking fountains, one of which is the Memorial Fountain that can be seen in March, which was built to commemorate the coronation of King George V in 1911. Just round the corner along the Little Whyte, we happened across a traditional rare old red telephone box across the way from the Three Horseshoes public house. Relatively few are in working condition nowadays having been taken out of service due to low usage, as mobile phones have taken over. Many have been physically removed with others converted into “honesty lending libraries” or even locations for defibrillators. I managed to get a look at the back of the kiosk down at its base to make out from the information plate that it was a Carron foundry-made box, once again from Falkirk in Stirlingshire. The Carron Company had at one time been the largest iron goods supplier in Europe from its inception in 1759. It most famously produced the ‘carronade’ cannon used successfully against the enemy by Wellington at Waterloo, and he is on record as saying that he only wanted carronades in his army. Admiral Lord Nelson also favoured them and the first shot he ordered to be fired from HMS Victory at Trafalgar was from a carronade. They were used in
J U NE 2 0 2 1
both the American War of Independence and Civil War of the 1860s. One cannon was even found in Fort Alamo, San Antonio, Texas. Pillar boxes bearing the Carron mark at their base can still be found all over the UK and indeed worldwide. A modern edition of a Carron pillar box ‘the bullet’, so called due to its shape, can be found gracing the cobbles of the longest running TV soap opera, Coronation Street. Incidentally, the so called ‘iconic red London phone booth’ as the Yanks call it, which sits outside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Florida, is also a Carron phone box. Our day trip to Ely meeting up with our friends from East Harling also proved fruitful. Another Carron phone box was discovered where Silver Street meets Back of Hill near a small grassy area. Directly opposite Oliver Cromwell’s house in St Mary’s Street Ely, is a fine example of a rare, very large wall mounted post box. The box is some forty-eight inches tall, and the maker’s name can be found along the bottom of it, McDowall Steven Company Ltd of Falkirk. The company had located to Falkirk in 1916 to a foundry sited a mile from my present house. Similar to Carron, its range of pillar and post boxes can be found almost everywhere. Another example of this model can be found in Wisbech, embedded in the wall at the entrance to Norfolk Street post office. Sadly however, Falkirk is no longer associated with cast iron products, the foundries having all closed, but more recently the town has become somewhat of a tourist attraction being home to the Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies. The ‘Wheel’ being the first and only rotating boatlift in the world, transporting barges and small craft between two canals which converge at different heights; whilst the ‘Kelpies’ are 30-metre-high horse-head sculptures made from stainless steel.
It was quite satisfying during our visit to see that many parts of Fenland had been furnished with cast iron products from Scotland and indeed Falkirk. They are part of our history, and objects which are so often taken for granted. Our most enjoyable stay in the Fens, helped by sunny weather, came to an end and we picked up Louis from Wisbech on our way North. Hopefully our new puppy is maybe a way of taking a little piece of Fenland back home to Scotland with us. Photo: The Memorial Fountain, March

IT'S GREAT TO BE OUT AND ABOUT... By Steve Barclay MP
W
ith the COVID roadmap moving forward as the vaccine rollout has continued at pace, it has been great to get back out and about in the constituency in person rather than virtually meeting people, visiting places and finding out more about great projects and troublesome issues. The Vertical Garden project, one of the “I Love Wisbech” partnership endeavours, is one of the projects it was great to see firsthand. The ambition is to create a beautiful vertical garden on the site of one of the public buildings in Wisbech Park - ‘living walls’ which will become a focal point that can be enjoyed by everyone. This focus on nature is one of the areas I am promoting in government, as I think COVID has reinforced our connection with the importance of spending time outdoors. In Wisbech, I visited Fenrock to meet Nate George and Alex Harris to hear about plans for their 8000sq ft new venue. The sheer scope of the building, with routes for all grades and abilities, means there truly is something for everyone. If you have not yet visited and fancy trying a new challenge, then do go and have a look. At Estover playing field with Gerry Roe, of March Town FC, and Katie Critchley from the Cambs FA, I found out more about their bid to the Football Foundation for a new full size 3G pitch. It’s great to see these plans and it is a bid I strongly support. We need more 3G football pitches across the constituency and I am working with a number of local sports clubs on this and spoke recently with the Football Foundation to make this case. In Whittlesey, it was great to be back at Fenland Youth Radio again for the Fenland Friday Breakfast Show with Rob and Julie Windle. We covered a range of topics including my annual Read to Succeed campaign which is raising money to give every Year 4 child in the constituency a reading book to take home for
the summer holidays; about having my COVID jab the week before, and the recent Pride of Whittlesey Awards. We also chatted about some of the major topics for Whittlesey like progress on Kings Dyke and the issues around Saxon Pit. Speaking of those two issues, I visited the Kings Dyke crossing scheme for an update to see the earthworks on the eastern side of the railway, which is moving on rapidly, and the partial filling of Star Pit looks complete. The reinforced earth abutments, which connect the deck of the bridge with the ground and supports its weight have now reached their full height. Regarding Saxon Pit, I had a constructive meeting with the Environment Agency Chief Executive Sir James Bevan to reinforce our community concerns. Sir James was very clear that his organisation is working to address this at pace. I will continue to liaise with local councillors to ensure relevant bodies are held to account in respect of this site. The formal March Flood Investigation Report into the flooding that ruined some residents’ Christmas is due to be published by the county council this month, but I’m pleased to see that organisations responsible are already taking actions to resolve some of the issues. In recent months, the Highways Authority and Anglian Water have reset a number of road pumps and foul pumping stations; 2324 gullies have been cleansed and a private culvert cleared on Wisbech Road; Land Registry searches have been undertaken to identify those responsible for blocked watercourses; the Anglian Water network has been surveyed as have riparian watercourses to input into an integrated urban drainage model. Finally, having now had my own jab of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine at Doddington, I wanted once again to say huge thanks to the fantastic health team both there and at all the other vaccination sites across North East Cambridgeshire. Well done to everyone involved.

Greater Peterborough University Technical College Now Accepting Applications for Year 7 Students
T
he Greater Peterborough UTC (GPUTC) are now accepting applications for Year 7 students wishing to start in September 2021. They recently announced that, “Working alongside our new academic partners, the Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT), we are finally able to share this outstanding news.” This means current Year 6 students with a passion for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) will now be able to join the school at an even earlier age, and the GPUTC will be able to deliver their specialist curriculum to even more of
Peterborough’s budding young scientists, architects, designers and mathematicians. A first for the wider Peterborough area, the GPUTC boasts of pioneering “Expeditionary Learning” which engages students in learning across multiple subjects. Through this scheme of learning, students complete in-depth research of authentic topics through a series of expeditions designed to enhance students’ knowledge and develop their research and critical thinking skills. Because the GPUTC has close ties with numerous sponsors in various fields of STEM, students who choose to join this institution will have
experts at hand to support their learning. Intake spaces will be limited to only sixty students. Principal, Mr David Bisley, explained that this is so that, “We can ensure that high quality academic rigour is delivered, alongside unrivalled care, support and guidance from our dedicated Year 7 team of teachers and support staff.” Besides this recent addition, the GPUTC are still taking applications for Year 9 and for their Sixth Form too. Application forms can be accessed on the GPUTC website: www.gputc.com and sent to admissions@peterborough.gov.uk.
For further information and/or arrange a private COVID-safe visit, please contact either the GPUTC Year 7 Transition Manager at headofyear7@gputc.com or the GPUTC admissions team at applications@gputc.com.

Matters
HELPING TO ENSURE LOCAL BUSINESSES ARE COVID-SECURE Fenland District Council’s COVID and environmental health teams have teamed up with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to give local businesses extra support with their COVID-secure measures. HSE officers will be carrying out business support spot checks to make sure local businesses have the right COVID safety measures in place and provide guidance and advice wherever needed. The work, part of a national HSE programme with councils across the country, will help efforts to keep coronavirus rates as low as possible and support the local public health authority in understanding any patterns in confirmed coronavirus cases in the area. Cllr Samantha Hoy, Fenland District Council’s cabinet member for Environmental Health, said: “The vast majority of Fenland’s businesses have done a magnificent job of following the government guidance and gone the extra mile to continue supplying goods and services in what has been an incredibly challenging period. “We have been working with businesses throughout the pandemic, providing advice as needed and supporting them to put the right precautions in place. There have been some exemplar efforts, however businesses do have a responsibility to continually review whether their processes are fit for purpose to keep their staff, customers and visitors safe.
We bring you items of interest for your home and community. If there is something you’d like us to cover or you have something to say please get in touch at: Discovering Whittlesea, PO Box 164, Bourne PE10 1ET editor.whittlesea@discoveringmagazines.co.uk
FIRST STEPS TO READING Fenland children aged under four years who are not yet library members are being urged to join up. By joining the First Steps Library Club they will receive three special gifts – one for each return visit – and once they have joined, they will be entered into a monthly prize draw to win a £50 High Street voucher. As if that wasn’t enough, there is also the chance to win a family photoshoot. Find out more at FirstStepsLibrary@ cambridgeshire.gov.uk
APPEAL TO HELP EACH BOOK COSTS Local residents are being asked to help raise funds for The East Anglian Children’s Hospice (EACH). Three thousand pounds is being looked for to fund printing costs for a book of short stories, games and puzzles put together by The Shelford Scribes. Member Jill Adderley said: “I was personally inspired to do this by a patient’s family who told me that there are periods of time when all is quiet. She said that reading a book was sometimes difficult as there are long periods of time between opportunities to read.
“This new project with the HSE will help us to ensure this good work continues and build consumer confidence as coronavirus restrictions continue to ease. By making sure that businesses have measures in place to manage the risks, both our health and the economy benefit.”
“A book of short stories, puzzles, etc. is ideal to fill in these short gaps, so when I pitched this idea, it was received with enthusiasm. Not only will it help the families to fill those quiet gaps, but all of the profits will go directly to EACH, which will enable them to continue to carry out their invaluable work.”
The focus of the project will initially be on warehousing, distribution, and transport businesses in Fenland, although all businesses are in scope for spot checks, meaning businesses of any size, in any sector can be contacted to ensure they are COVID-secure.

CENSUS SUCCESS
MAKE RAPID COVID TESTING A HABIT Fenland residents are being encouraged to take twice-weekly rapid COVID tests to help support the roadmap out of lockdown. As restrictions ease further and we resume parts of life we have all missed, regular rapid lateral flow testing of people without symptoms is fundamental to helping us quickly spot positive coronavirus cases and stop any outbreaks. Alongside the roll-out of the vaccine, the testing supplied by NHS Test and Trace is at the heart of the Government’s plans to reopen society and the economy. Everyone in England can now access the free, rapid tests to check for coronavirus, twice a week. Lateral flow tests can be taken under supervision of a member of staff who will then process your result for you on site within thirty minutes. No appointment is necessary, just turn up. The tests can be taken Whittlesey Baptist Church, 32 Gracious Street, Whittlesey. Open Wednesday and Friday, 9am to 5pm. You can also collect tests to complete at home from the PCR testing sites and pharmacies that have signed up to offer Pharmacy Collect. Find your nearest site at: https://maps.test-and-trace. nhs.uk/ Use the filters when you access the link to find locations where you can collect tests to complete at home.
The Fenland response to Census 2021 has exceeded all expectations, with more than ninety percent of households making sure they count when it comes to local services like school places, GP surgeries and hospital beds. Fenland District Council leader Cllr Chris Boden said: “Those who have taken part have ensured they are represented for their local area. I’d like to thank everyone who has filled out their form so far as well as all the community groups, organisations and local authorities who have helped us make this census a success.”
ROYAL BRITISH LEGION CELEBRATES CENTENARY The photo below shows the Whittlesey Royal British Legion marking the 100th birthday of the RBL with a symbolic lowering of the standard and laying of a wreath at the Whittlesey War Memorial. This happened all around the country. Sadly, all RBL members and the public could not be involved due to current restrictions, but it is planned when it is appropriate later in the year to mark the occasion so that more can be involved. One event in the calendar is a concert band event on October 29th; more details will be announced closer to the time. Photo: Judy Darby, treasurer, Wally Newman, vice chairman, Sue Taylor, poppy organiser, Jane Crowe, standard bearer, Ray Thrower (representing the secretary), and Pauline Edge, chairman. The LFD tests are strictly for people without coronavirus symptoms (a new, continuous cough, high temperature or change in your sense of smell/taste). If you have symptoms, self-isolate immediately and book a PCR test. Dr Liz Robin, Director of Public Health for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, said: “Twiceweekly rapid testing is actively helping to identify cases of COVID-19 that would otherwise be missed. With one in three people with coronavirus showing no symptoms and potentially spreading it without knowing, rapid testing helps to identify positive cases quickly, preventing the spread of infection.” J U NE 2 0 2 1

Each One Of Us, Unique In Every Way
I
love nature and I often marvel at how we are blessed with so many different species of animals, birds, flowers, trees and other creatures. It would have been easy for God to create one type or a single species of each but instead he chose to make a variety of each, not just a few but in some cases thousands or even hundreds of thousands. Just think of how many different plants and flowers you have in your garden, I’m sure you are spoilt for choice. Take the humble beetle for instance; did you know there are approximately 350,000 different types in the world? And they are only the ones that have been discovered to date. I was watching some birds splashing about in a puddle recently and in that one small area alone I identified four different species. You see our creator is a God of variety, everything he makes is unique in every way, right down to the minute detail and that includes us. Every one of us, whilst we may have similar body parts, is individually made, even ‘identical’ twins will have differences.
WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH The world would be a very monotonous place if we were cloned to all look and sound the same, so God has ensured that we are made with love by him, like a master-craftsman’s bespoke creation, not mass produced. The Bible says in Psalm 139 v14: We are fearfully and wonderfully made. Another translation of that scripture says ‘Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex, it’s amazing to think about. Your workmanship is marvellous.’ So, if you feel down, or your self- esteem has taken a battering, look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself you are beautiful, special, unique and loved because God says you are. Finance
Why Should Companies Do the Right Thing? by Eamonn Dorling
usually the owners/bosses. Now pension fund managers and individuals investing their wealth have power. Everyone can influence the behaviour of organisations. Influence can be whether you choose to invest in a company or lend funds to one. If funding is not forthcoming, the organisation needs to make an alternative business case. Suppose a company employs workers who receive less than a fair wage? Suppose their products or manufacture creates pollution and are exposed to not treating customers and employees fairly? Investing in that company would be unsustainable. Turn this around, and it becomes an organisation with a future that can contribute to the community and become a sustainable long term investment proposition.

ome say that COVID has brought about changes in twelve months that would typically have taken about ten years. Whether this is true – we will never know. There have been some significant changes in attitudes and behaviours.
The impact on finance will be significant. For example, ‘Black Lives Matter’ has shown that it is no longer acceptable to discriminate on irrelevant factors. We understand environmental issues better than ever before. People working in poor or dangerous conditions or being paid less than the work justifies is no longer tolerated. In the past, these matters would be decided by those with the most significant influence –

One of My Biggest ‘Growing Pains’ for the Business is Finding the Right People.
W
henever we have recruited new team members, we are extremely careful about finding the right people that fit into our team. As an employer, I work very hard to try and build a positive work environment; finding people with the right mindset is a huge part of that.
Come and join our fantastic team!
We have been very restricted this year, but we like to have ‘team building days’, where we may go and carry out some physical activities such as tobogganing, or raft building, or something mentally challenging, such as ‘the escape rooms.’ We have not been able to do much this year unfortunately, but we have our first activity since before lockdown booked in at the end of May.

We are welcoming our new Operations Manager, John, into the company this week, and we are very much looking forward to working with him and his extensive experience that will be able to help us to perfect our performance as a company and achieve more than ever before.
Job Opportunity We are looking to expand our team, so if you are, or somebody you know is, a qualified electrician, or would like to train to be an electrician, then the best way to apply is to send a CV and covering letter to Recruit@AltoElectrical.co.uk to be considered for a future with us.
I am very proud of the Alto team; they are genuine, kind, competent and professional. I know, like, and trust each and every team member. I would actually have no problem leaving them in charge of the baby if it was ever necessary, and any new mum will understand how much that means! Everyone at Alto is hard-working and has a positive outlook and a good sense of humour. We have a mutual understanding of trust and respect, something that is so important for any healthy workplace.
