Welcome to your July issue...
H
igh summer is now upon us, and the warm, dry weather outside has put a welcome smile upon many faces.
What’s more, however, is that it has helped to sweeten the bitter pill issued recently by the Government, postponing the “final” easing of the COVID restrictions until Monday July 19th. It means that almost seventy weeks will have passed since the initial “You must stay at home” announcement of March 2020! Life must go on... and it will, but whatever “normal” is going to look like or feel like later this month will be anyone’s guess. Social distancing and the masking of faces I suspect won’t be missed, but I hope that the attitudes of looking out much more for others and actually communicating more with other people will be a long-lasting legacy of this awful pandemic.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been having some work done to my home and I have to say I can’t wait for it to be finished. All the tradesmen – builders, plumbers, electricians, plasterers, decorators et al – have been great but living in the chaos has been a pain. If dust was worth cash, I would now be retired and sunning myself in the Caribbean – travel restrictions allowing! Working from home and keeping my two dogs out of the way has been a challenge, but fortunately so far the weather has been fine which has meant they could spend time outside away from the upheaval with access to the shaded garden when required. However, as I write this, heavy storms are predicted which may pose one or two more problems as we near the end of the project. My wife and myself have had two houses renovated previously, and each time we have vowed that it would be the last time.
THE TEAM
I can definitely say that this is it. I’m done. It’s ended. Finished. Finito…

Place your potatoes in a pan of salted water and bring to the boil, turn down to a simmer and leave to cook until they are just tender. Drain the potatoes and leave them to cool completely. In a frying pan, fry your bacon until crispy and then also leave to cool. Once your potatoes are cold, cut them into thick slices. Place them in a bowl with the mayonnaise, sour cream, bacon and spring onions. Fold everything together gently until well mixed and then season to taste. Serve and enjoy!

Austrian Wines:
Delivering Diversity
SCHLUMBERGER (established 1842) Chardonnay Reserve (12% vol) I found to be an elegant and fresh sparkling wine. This production greets with a light and citrus bouquet, which leads, enticingly, to the mouth’s pleasures www.schlumberger.at Gut MOSER Chardonnay (12.5% vol) is another splendid ‘sparkler’. This ‘klassik’ delight is very popular too. www.weingut-moser.at STEININGER Sauvignon Blanc reserve (13.5% vol) also has the crisp, refreshing, sparkling effect, coming through beautifully. www.weingut-steininger.at For Austrian still white wines, Schloss GOBELSBURG (founded 1171) Heiligenstein (13% vol) suited my palate, for Riesling, perfectly. Fruity, smooth and elegant, with a long finish. One of the oldest wineries in the Danube area, the winery has Riesling terraces, some of which boast the oldest vineyards on the estate. www.gobelsburg.at NITTNAUS Chardonnay Selection (13% vol) allures, with its eyecatching, golden-yellow colour. The bouquet evokes thoughts of ripe, summer fruits. Full-bodied, with excellent mouthfeel, and the palate is delighted by the splendid finish. www.nittnaus.net HIRSCH (established 1878) Grüner Veltliner (13% vol) has many ‘devotees’. With a captivating bouquet, this full-bodied wine is wonderful, in every sense. Ripe, juicy fruits in abundance continue the structured pleasure to the end. www.weingut-hirsch.at 8

By Trevor L angley Further great choices of Austrian white wines are available, including productions by JOSEF FRITZ. www.weingut-fritz.at and EDLMOSER www.edlmoser.com Austrian still red wines are also very popular. TRIEBAUMER Weite Welt (14.5% vol) I found exceptional. Fullbodied and dense, from the nasal pleasures to the finish, this wine has late-harvested fruit contributing to the very impressive end product. With high ageing potential, this powerful production wins my vote – and many other people’s, no doubt! www.triebaumer.at SALZL Sacris (14% vol) is a further, often-selected wine. Dark fruits are complemented by what is to follow. Pleasures are immense for this Zweigelt wine, which is wellbalanced through to the extended finish. www.salzl.at Other very impressive Austrian red wines include productions from JOHANNESHOF REINISCH. www.j-r.at and PRIELER. www.prieler.at For more details, including winery tours and accommodations, please visit the respective websites. JULY GARDENING TIPS
atering is so important this month and it is better to water crops frequently and generously, as intermittent watering can cause problems with flowers falling, fruits failing to form, skins splitting and premature bolting. Watering at the beginning or end of the day is preferable, and spreading a mulch will help to slow down evaporation and suppress weeds. Have you tried growing edible flowers in amongst the vegetables? Not only do they provide colour in cooking, but also attract beneficial insects. Examples of flowers to grow are borage, nasturtium, viola, chives, lavender, marigold and calendula. Although it is getting late for sowing and planting, there are still a few crops that can be planted: • Lettuce, rocket and a variety of salad leaves –succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn. • Fast-growing varieties of peas, beetroot and carrots. • Florence fennel. • Plant out your leeks, cabbage, cauliflowers, Brussels, broccoli and kale for autumn and winter cropping, using the space created by lifting onions, garlic and early potatoes. Other jobs to do in the vegetable patch: • Poor potato crops are the result of poor nutrition, so try feeding potatoes with a tomato feed. Also, check

the potato plants and earth-up, if necessary, to prevent the tubers going green from exposure to light. • When climbing beans have reached the top of the canes, pinch out the growing tip. • Strawberries will finish fruiting, so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners or use them to produce new plants. • Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top dressing of nitrogenous fertiliser or an organic liquid feed. • Nip off the side shoots of your tomatoes; they appear in the “v” between leaf stems and main stems, and when there are four or five trusses, pinch out the growing tip of the plant to allow the fruit to ripen. Water them with a liquid feed as soon as the first fruits are formed. Likewise for peppers. • Ensure that peas and brassicas are netted to keep off the pigeons. • Plant potatoes ready for Christmas; garden centres usually stock the winter varieties. • It is time to harvest garlic and onions: a few days before you do this loosen the soil around the roots, choose a dry spell, lift the bulbs and lay them on the ground in the sun to dry them out as the more thoroughly they are dried out, the longer they will keep. Happy gardening!

Mortgage Advice
What Size Mortgage Could You Afford?
W
ADVICE FROM CAREN PALMER-WELCH, MORTGAGE AND PROTECTION BROKER
hen you apply for a mortgage, how much you can afford may seem like a mystery. There is no secret behind the outcome, just a simple formula. Here are the factors lenders consider
for your affordability.
• YOUR INCOME is still used to consider what you can afford. You’ll need to prove how much your income is and how it is broken down i.e. salary, overtime, bonuses, commission, pension, benefits and allowances. Some lenders will only take a portion of non-regular income – finding the right one for your income is the key to your affordability.
• YOUR CREDIT SCORE is checked with a Credit Reference Agency before agreeing to lend. Your score will reflect any issues in the last six years, such as defaults, County Court Judgements, ‘Individual Voluntary Arrangements’ or bankruptcy. These issues will affect whether a lender will lend, how much they will lend and the interest rate.
• YOUR DEPOSIT demonstrates a certain level of financial responsibility. A higher deposit also lowers the lender’s risk. The more you have saved, the more you’ll be able to borrow. • YOUR OUTGOINGS are taken into consideration; lenders consider how much you spend on essentials such as: food, household products, bills, debts, car/ travel, insurances and medical items. • FUTURE OUTGOINGS are considered in your affordability. They’ll consider the likelihood of various circumstances occurring, including redundancy, serious illness or the birth of a baby. If you’re pregnant or you have children, the cost of raising children will be reflected in your borrowing. • FUTURE INTEREST RATE changes could impact your affordability. Based on lender assumptions, they will check your income after your essential outgoings and spending to ensure funds are available to pay if your rate raises. Lenders assess affordability differently which could mean that one will lend you more than another. We, at Agentis, have the tools and experience to match your circumstances with the right lender for you.
*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

One of My Biggest ‘Growing Pains’ for the Business is Finding the Right People.
W
henever we have recruited new team members, we are extremely careful about finding the right people that fit into our team. As an employer, I work very hard to try and build a positive work environment; finding people with the right mindset is a huge part of that.
Come and join our fantastic team!
We have been very restricted this year, but we like to have ‘team building days’, where we may go and carry out some physical activities such as tobogganing, or raft building, or something mentally challenging, such as ‘the escape rooms.’ We have not been able to do much this year unfortunately, but we have our first activity since before lockdown booked in at the end of May.

husband and I often take our young children in the office with us. I believe that this is one of the key reasons for having this friendly, family atmosphere. We are welcoming our new Operations Manager, John, into the company this week, and we are very much looking forward to working with him and his extensive experience that will be able to help us to perfect our performance as a company and achieve more than ever before.
Job Opportunity We are looking to expand our team, so if you are, or somebody you know is, a qualified electrician, or would like to train to be an electrician, then the best way to apply is to send a CV and covering letter to Recruit@AltoElectrical.co.uk to be considered for a future with us.
I am very proud of the Alto team; they are genuine, kind, competent and professional. I know, like, and trust each and every team member. I would actually have no problem leaving them in charge of the baby if it was ever necessary, and any new mum will understand how much that means! Everyone at Alto is hard-working and has a positive outlook and a good sense of humour. We have a mutual understanding of trust and respect, something that is so important for any healthy workplace. We are family-oriented, and my

Protect Your Garden from Green-fingered Thieves this Summer By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades During lockdown, our gardens have become more important than ever, as we have grown our own vegetables, added decorative lighting and ornaments, invested in furniture, and splashed out on hot tubs and outdoor bars. But when considering our outdoor space and belongings, how many of us pay the same attention to garden security as we do our own home? Did you know that nine out of ten household thefts occur in the garden – with our best outdoor furniture, garden ornaments, power tools and ornaments, barbecue and ladders among the top items? Here are some simple precautions: •
Take a walk around your garden and check things that may be appealing to a thief – an unlocked back gate or shed (particularly if the shed contains expensive garden tools/machinery or bikes).
G.L Home Improvements
• Get a reputable locksmith to secure gates and sheds.
DAVE HARGRAVE INSTALLATIONS
• CCTV surveillance will allow you to view your garden and any unwelcomed activity from your home.
• Lock away ladders or anything which could be used to gain entry to your home.
• Install some sensory/outdoor lighting. • Alarm the garage to provide additional security or think about installing garage roller shutter doors. • If your fencing is flimsy, broken panels could provide easy access to intruders, so consider investing in some new and improved fencing or panels. • FOLLOWING COVID-19 GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES

Pack away out of sight any garden tools or equipment. Even if you take a break from cutting the front lawn, keep your mower out of reach of opportunist thieves.
• Secure expensive plants with wire pegs dug into the ground around the root ball. • Use a security pen to mark items like garden furniture, ornaments or trampolines, with your postcode. • Consider defensive planting like prickly hedges or shrubs. • Join a local Neighbourhood Watch Group like www.ourwatch.org.uk When thinking about having any security, garden maintenance or crime prevention work carried out in your home and/or garden, always use someone reputable and trustworthy. when they are online or receive phone calls from unknown numbers.” Assemblies and creative workshops were hosted throughout June for Year 6 students at Burrowmoor Primary School in March, Orchards Church of England Primary School in Wisbech and Ramnoth Junior School in Wisbech. These assemblies and creative workshops gave young people the tools and knowledge they need to stay safe and make responsible financial decisions.
FENLAND LOAN SHARK AWARENESS CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED Fenland District Council and the England Illegal Money Lending Team have joined together to launch a new campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of loan sharks and illegal money lending. The campaign is a priority in the action plan for the Fenland Community Safety Partnership with a wide range of organisations involved across Fenland including Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Rainbow Saver Anglia Credit Union, Blackfield Creatives, local taxi companies and a selection of Fenland primary schools. In addition to raising awareness of the dangers of illegal money lending and the damage it can do to communities, the campaign also highlights the key signs to spot a loan shark and the steps that residents can take to report them. Cllr Andrew Lynn, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder responsible for community safety, said: “Loan sharks and illegal money lenders often take advantage of those most vulnerable in our society and by stopping them from preying on those who need assistance and instead offering support to their victims we can make Fenland a safer place for everyone. “We fully support this project to raise awareness of scams and illegal money lending and we feel it is vitally important that children are able to spot the signs that something is wrong too, especially 24

Posters and signs featuring key messages from the campaign are also being displayed in each of Fenland’s four market towns. Elsewhere, window stickers are featured in the back of many of Fenland’s local taxis with Cambridgeshire Constabulary having committed to displaying the stickers in the back of their vehicles as well. The campaign will run throughout July and you can find more information on illegal money lending by visiting www.stoploansharks.co.uk
LIVE MUSIC COMES TO WHITTLESEY
Two live music events are being held in Whittlesey this month. The Montero Festival is being staged to raise money to help musicians and Whittlesey Athletic Football Club. It will take place on Saturday, July 10th at Feldale Field, Drybread Road and will feature Motor City Vipers, Broadcasters, Downstairs Mix-Up, Dave Smith and Andy Hughes, plus guests. Doors open at 12pm and the live music will run from 2pm until 9pm. Tickets are priced £10 with family tickets (for two adults and three children) costing £25. They are available from The Straw Bear pub, Whittlesey. Tel: (0173) 351506, or email@ info@motorcityvipers.co.uk Hot and cold food will be available on the day as well as a licensed bar and family entertainment will include a fire engine and football games. Meanwhile, Music on the Square returns to Whittlesey on Sunday, July 18th with performers including The Contacts and Dale Diamond. Sponsored by McCain, the event, which starts at 2pm, is supported by Whittlesey Town Council and Boon Brothers. JULY 2021
MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR As I write this article, the sun is shining and the sky is blue; apologies if, as you read the article, it is raining! However, the British summertime is with us at last and whilst many people are disappointed with travel arrangements abroad let us all realise what glorious opportunities there are in the United Kingdom for holidays or even short breaks. The onset of COVID and the restrictions this epidemic has brought should remind us of the many places nearer to home that we may wish to visit or revisit. With the economy in need of a boost what better time is there to spend nationally or even locally? Whilst many will travel to the traditional seaside resorts around our coastline, the lochs and glens of Scotland, walking or climbing holidays in the Peak District, or simply visiting the many National Trust attractions, let us not forget the events planned nearer home this summer. The ever popular ‘Music on the Square’ organised by Whittlesey Town Council returns this year on the Buttercross at 2pm on Sundays, July 18th, August 8th and September 5th. These are free events open to all, so bring along your deck chairs, hampers etc and have a great time singing and dancing until 6pm.
Parish Hall in Parkinsons Lane. In addition to the usual stalls there will be live music, an outside bar and barbecue or afternoon tea within the hall for those who just wish to meet up with old friends and chat. Again, this is a free event. Whilst Whittlesey Festival has been cancelled this year, on Sunday, September 12th, there will be an all-day event at the Manor Leisure Centre, entitled ‘Welcome Back Whittlesey – The Big Bash’. The event will comprise outdoor and indoor activities, live music, an opportunity to participate in sports organised by Whittlesey Sports Association, a Golden Age Fair and much more; once again a free event. So, let's all turn out in force at as many as possible of these events and demonstrate that Whittlesey is indeed alive and kicking! Finally, a reminder that nominations are being sought for this year's Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year. After the past year that we have all experienced I would expect there to be a bumper entry this year with so much good work having been undertaken in the town and villages. Entries can be sent to The Town Clerk, Mrs Sue Piergianni at Whittlesey Town Council, Peel House, 8 Queen Street, Whittlesey, Peterborough, PE7 1AY or by e-mail to clerk@whittleseytowncouncil.gov.uk Whatever your plans, may I wish you an enjoyable summer. Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council
BusFest, with its array of vintage transport and trips to local attractions, goes ahead on Sunday, July 25th, again centred on the Buttercross. On Saturday, July 31st, the Mayor's Summer Ball will be held at the Manor Leisure Centre. Full details and ticket applications are available through Town Clerk, Mrs Sue Piergianni at the council offices at Peel House. On Bank Holiday Monday, August 30th, the St Andrew’s Fete returns in the grounds of St Andrew's

CASH BOOST FOR CONSTITUENCY By Steve Barclay MP
M
illions of pounds of investment have been confirmed in the constituency in recent weeks – from £8.44 million to transform March town centre to the extra £1.16m for schools as part of the Education Opportunity Area funding. Another £10m could be injected into football facilities over the next decade, and I’m keen to see how the extra Government funding for health will be spent locally. However it is not just how much investment we secure but more importantly the outcome this delivers. We are one of just twelve areas in the country to secure a fifth year of EOA funding. Previous years’ funding has meant 1200 school staff have received mental health training, forty-five mental health leads have been established across the area with 1300 parents and carers accessing support, and the Fenland and East Cambridgeshire Recruitment Incentives Grant has helped recruit seventy-nine teachers into nineteen local schools. These are all great initiatives which are really making a difference to our young people and I’m pleased that a core focus of next year’s funding is ensuring the sustainability of improvements so we can continue to make forward strides for the benefit of our children. I remain strongly opposed to proposals for a huge incinerator in Wisbech, and to ensure we are well prepared ahead of any next steps, I arranged for a team of senior elected Wisbech representatives to meet Robert Jenrick MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. We were able to set out our concerns regarding the incinerator, discuss levelling up, and generally strengthen relationships between Fenland and the department for local government. I also met with health managers Roland Sinker, Chief Executive at Addenbrooke's, Jan Thomas,
Chief Executive of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group, and Matthew Winn, NHS senior responsible owner for Ageing Well, to discuss how we localise more health treatment including the next steps for Doddington and North Cambs hospital sites. In my Treasury role as Chief Secretary, I am overseeing a very significant increase in health spending. I am pleased that all three health bosses agreed that more services could and should be localised and look forward to working with them in the months ahead on this issue. For some time, I’ve been having meetings with the Football Foundation and Cambridgeshire Football Association regarding 3G pitches. The Local Football Facility Plan for the area has highlighted a pipeline of priority projects including the provision for 3G artificial pitches, changing pavilions, natural grass pitches and small sided facilities. Our schemes include Leverington 3G 9x9 pitch where fundraising is already underway; a full size 3G pitch in Estover, March, where a pitch application is already in; plans for a 3G first team pitch or a 9x9 training pitch at Wisbech St Mary; and a multi-use games area at Little Downham, which is being re-laid. Sport is a great catalyst to bring communities together, not to mention the huge health and wellbeing benefits, and I will continue to support our local sports clubs to make the case for the funding they need from national bodies. Finally, thanks to all those who have supported my annual Read to Succeed campaign, which aims to raise enough money to buy a new reading book for every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire to take home for the summer holidays. I’m grateful to the many who have donated and will update you further next time.

GLYN JONES
AUCTIONS Can Deal With All Your Needs Glyn Jones Auctions was formed with more than 45 years of experience in the world of antiques and general sales.
T
he company offers its customers a full, confidential, discreet and honest service at all times – whether you need to dispose of an estate (however large or small), arrange a clearance, or if you are looking to sell/buy at one of its auctions. Founder, Glyn Jones, started out on the road of antiques and collectors’ pieces in 1976, buying and selling at auctions on a weekly basis. During the 1970s to 1980s, stripping and polishing pine furniture and interior decorating was all the craze, and exceedingly popular with TV programmes, and he found himself very busy supplying the retail and trade market throughout the UK and Europe. The market soon opened up to include America, and furniture started to leave the UK for global markets, such as Australia and New New Zealand and Glyn continued to supply furniture and collectables to this market until the late 1990s. He said: “Colours and ideas changed in the furniture market which pushed me in a slightly different direction and I opened a small factory making pine furniture – supplying other independent retailers, as well as my own outlet. I also operated a removals and storage company. Using the same equipment and vehicles, I was able to offer house clearance services which allowed dealings for all types of needs from the small cottage to, on occasion, the large estate move.”
34
D I S C O V E R I N G
Whittlesea
Glyn was also able to give his time and service to the United Kingdom serving in the British Army as a TA solider which he enjoyed immensely, serving on the peacekeeping tour of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He added: “A few more years passed by and I found myself in Peterborough working at an auction house. After ten and a half years I realised it was time once again to open my own auction house. I’ve always felt that there is a market out there to serve the public and business sector, above and beyond, with attention to detail and finesse – so Glyn Jones Auctions was finally launched in 2021.”
What makes Glyn Jones different?
Every customer is listened to and valued throughout their enquiry – ensuring it will be conducted and carried out to their wishes. Customers always receive a professional, honest and sympathetic manner of approach, including offering straightforward advice and a hassle-free service. It doesn’t matter where you are in the UK, the company can offer its service all over the country. It will endeavour to sort out all your commodities and items into the right categories and place them in the correct auctions, from low value to high-end Fine Art. It can pass on items to local charities on your behalf so other individuals can benefit from these items. Glyn Jones also strives to reduce the impact on landfill. Should an item be indispensable to dispose of in landfill, Glyn Jones has its own in-house recycling facility, and an appropriate waste carrier licence. Fully insured, with a waste licence, the company operates modern vehicles that carry all the necessary equipment to conduct the required task at hand. Contact the Glyn Jones Auctions team at Unit 16, Springwater Business Park, Station Road, Whittlesey, Peterborough PE7 2EU for a free no obligation quotation. Tel: (01733) 963031. They look forward to helping you. JULY 2021

“Let it go..., let it go...” she sings. But how?
As Queen Elsa sang in Disney’s ‘Frozen’, the concept of ‘letting things go’ has become a norm in our culture. In my last column I promised to explain how to ‘let it go’; now it's time to deliver.
W
HAT? If we're going to master 'letting things go' we need to understand what it is we're letting go of – and where it is. When we 'hold onto' something it's because we have some form of fear or discomfort around the issue. This makes us feel the need to control the situation, the outcome. We get attached to something, and feel resistance to the opposite, because we've been conditioned to feel that some things are not okay. So, we're letting go of what I call 'Fear Consciousness', which is always a falsehood. You can't let go of something that's true, but you can let go of your attachment to it – or your resistance to it. You may be a great painter but fear losing the talent if you've been told you're useless without it. You may be of a certain political or sexual persuasion but fear admitting it to yourself if your family is against it. WHERE? Science has shown that when people oppress us such that we have to suppress – bury – aspects of our true personality, it doesn't just create a 'wound' that exists in the unconscious mind, it also resides in the body, in the nervous system. So, if your elders repressed your natural capacity to become a millionaire, it's not just the mental beliefs of that possibility you need to reclaim, you also have to release the constriction from your nervous system and also reclaim – step back into – the body, the physiology of a person willing to receive their millionaire potential... which is actually pretty much everybody. So, we need to let go of a false sense of self... from our unconscious mind and from our body.
HOW? Ten years ago, I wanted to both quit my job and engage with a famous author I'd met online, called Peter Ragnar. But I had fear of becoming homeless, plus shyness about interacting with 'famous people'. So, I just asked first myself, and then my deeper, subconscious mind and my body (same thing), to let go of those fears, and a couple of months later I simply found they had gone. I quit my job and had a great chat with Peter, who's since written to compliment my book. Kissing Consciousness calls this 'Passive Letting Go' – ask yourself and your 'Subconscious Bodymind' to let go of something and then just let the request run its course. You can literally ask your body; “Body, would you like to let that go?” With 'Active Letting Go' you ask questions just the same, but you intentionally stay present to the mental, emotional and physiological resistance that typically arises as a result of challenging that historical oppression. Staying present means we allow the feelings to arise without either avoiding them or chasing after them. This act of acceptance integrates them back into our authentic self.

Helping Luna to Learn to Ignore the Doorbell This month we thought we would take you on a ‘real-life’ behaviour consultation. And it’s a consultation very close to home – our clients are Claire Saberton, the Discovering Whittlesea magazine publisher and Sales Manager, and her husband, Chris. When a client contacts us to request our help with a behaviour problem, we start by asking lots of questions, some of which may seem odd. We ask for details from sleep patterns and diet to exercise regime and home life and lots more in-between. Our questions will delve into the behaviour and what it looks like. The other thing I want you to be aware of is rarely do we teach in the environment or during the activity that causes the behaviour. So, if your dog is reactive to other dogs or people, we will not take your dog to learn and train in the vicinity of other dogs. Anyway, back to the case in question! Claire and Chris contacted us as Luna is a barker! She barks when she is excited when her favourite people come home, she barks at strangers that visit the house, but she backs off and barks from a distance. Luna also barks and gets super excited at the sound of the doorbell! The issue that causes Chris and Claire the most angst is the barking at the sound of the doorbell. So, we will address this one first. Let’s look at the issue from Luna’s perspective: DING DONG – “Oh my goodness, that noise means everyone stops what they are doing and runs to the front door. A strange smelling parcel may come in, there may be lots of loud talking plus a scary,
exciting, strange smelling person may come in my safe space. The calmness of my space has gone, the attention that I had has gone, the game I was playing has stopped’ – the smell that the person/ parcel has on them is offensive/exciting.” All of this from just one sound, a sound that is unpredictable. This stress causes Luna’s adrenal glands to dump a load of stress hormone called ‘cortisol’ into her blood stream – cortisol causes her to react to a stressful event – in Luna’s case barking. To help Luna, Claire and Chris need to desensitise the sound of the doorbell – change the emotional response to the doorbell. So, we are going to teach her that the sound of the doorbell means a tasty treat is going to be offered in a place away from the doorbell and we are not going to run to the door. We also need to teach Luna that the sound of the doorbell means go to a special mat. As explained before, we teach ‘go to mat’ as a fun game before we add the sound of the doorbell as a cue. We then build on our movement towards the door in slow, gradual increments – making our repetitive walking to and from the door boring. You then add ‘fake’ answering the door. Luna should, following all three stages of this programme, be calmer and happier on hearing the doorbell. Claire and Chris have received a training programme to work on for the above stages. All resources from our session training notes, handouts and videos are uploaded to a personal digital folder for clients to access 24/7. Join us back here next month to see if Luna has improved!

Can You Help Look After Trainee Guide Dogs? Sight loss charity Guide Dogs needs volunteers in Whittlesey to care for trainee guide dogs whilst they prepare to become lifechanging guides.
T
he charity’s volunteer fosterers provide temporary homes for future guide dogs as they complete the latter stages of their guide dog training.
Guide Dogs covers the cost of all the food, veterinary care and equipment required for each dog and provides volunteer fosterers with full training and support. Melanie Brown, volunteering co-ordinator for Guide Dogs covering Whittlesey, said: “This is a great opportunity for an individual or a family to care for a dog, on a temporary basis. On weekdays, the dog you are caring for would attend training sessions with a local, specialist trainer from Guide Dogs. “On weekends, the dog can spend time with you and enjoy time out from training sessions. After a few months, the dog will move on to be partnered with a local person living with sight loss, becoming a life-changing guide. You can then look forward to caring for a new dog and starting this rewarding process again.”
Mel added: “This is an incredibly rewarding volunteering role, suitable for anyone aged eighteen or over. We also welcome applications from people who have other pets at home. If you’re from the Whittlesey area and think you could help, please do get in touch.” At any one time, Guide Dogs is responsible for 8400 puppies and dogs across the UK. The two main breeds the charity uses are Labradors and Golden Retrievers, which are crossed to gain the best characteristics of each breed. These make up almost eighty percent of the charity’s dogs. German Shepherds, Curly Coat Retrievers and Labradoodles are also used within the Guide Dogs breeding programme. If you think you could provide a loving, temporary home for a trainee guide dog in Whittlesey, contact Melanie Brown via melanie.brown@guidedogs.org.uk or call 0800 781 1444.
A guide dog begins its formal training at around twelve-fourteen months old and, in normal circumstances, most dogs qualify as working guide dogs by the age of two. Volunteer Fosterers usually care for dogs that are between fourteen and twenty-four months of age.

You are not ‘just’ anything
T
his article has a common thread with last month’s where I focused on our importance to God. Sometimes we are our own worst critics and the reason why self-worth is so relevant to me is because I personally battled with an inferiority complex for many years. This stemmed from negative comments that were said to me when I was growing up and those harsh words affected me through to adulthood. One of my favourite programmes currently is Dragon’s Den, where fledgling or growing businesses approach a panel of business tycoons (the Dragons) to win their investment. In one recent episode someone said if they could ‘just’ have one of the Dragons on board it would open many doors for their business. One of the Dragons singled out the word ‘just’ immediately, seeming insulted she replied: “This is not ‘just’ anything, because if a Dragon invests in you then it will open thousands if not millions of new opportunities for your business.” That got me thinking, never say you are ‘just’ this or that. I’ve heard different people say “I’m just the
WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH cleaner”, “just a mum”, or “just a secretary”. We shouldn’t look at ourselves as ‘just’ anything and belittle ourselves – everyone is important. In the bible God chose Jeremiah as a leader but he felt inadequate to do the task he had been called to do. In Jeremiah 1v6 he said ‘Ah Lord God, I can’t do that, I am just a child’, but God challenged his reply and reassured him he was the right person for the job. When you come to know God in a real way it brings a brand-new purpose to your life just as it did for me, I encourage you to do the same. Marija Lysak (Assistant Pastor)

RIDE FOR LIFE ACROSS NORFOLK, SUFFOLK AND CAMBRIDGESHIRE RETURNS

All the beauty of the East Anglian countryside awaits cyclists who sign up to ride three counties in three days as part of a returning charity challenge. Ride for Life, back from Friday, October 8th to Sunday, October 10th, sees participants covering more than two hundred miles to raise thousands of pounds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). The first day starts at Johnston Logistics UK, the event sponsor in Snetterton, heads to The Nook, EACH’s hospice just south of Norwich, then down to Ipswich. The second takes riders past The Treehouse, EACH’s hospice in Ipswich, and across to Cambridge. The final day passes EACH’s hospice in Milton, just north of Cambridge, before heading back to Snetterton. Ride for Life has been a flagship event for EACH since 1993, with Johnston Logistics UK sponsoring it since the inception. This year’s staging is in memory of Richard Johnston, the founder of Johnston Logistics UK who sadly died in December 2018. Becky Redbond, EACH Events Fundraising Manager, said: “We’re so excited for the return of Ride for Life. After all the time in lockdown over the last year, there has perhaps never been a better time to get out around the region and enjoy the stunning countryside scenes. “The event is both suitably challenging for experienced cyclists and fun for newer ones. 50

FENLAND HOUSE PRICES TOP £200K Fenland has seen Cambridgeshire’s lowest increase in average house price over the past ten years, although it has still gone up by 56.92 percent. The region’s average price was measured at £200,178.03 this March, compared to £127,566.98 ten years before, according to new analysis of the latest ONS figures. The study by A-Plan Insurance compared the average price of a house in March 2011 to March 2021, across more than four hundred areas of the UK. The Peterborough average house price has seen the second smallest, but still considerably large jump, going from £128,766.69 to £203,885.69 – an increase of 58.34%. At the top of the list in the county is Cambridge, where the average price has risen by 75.22% in comparison to ten years ago with houses now costing £461,935.21. JULY 2021

The children will also be encouraged to visit their local library to read another book and collect reward stars. More than 1500 books will be distributed after being sorted by Helen Barnes and Pauline Edge who boxed up the books ready for delivery to all of the schools in Whittlesey and other Fenland areas. KEEP BRITAIN TIDY SPRING CLEAN Fenland residents have been clearing up litter in their neighbourhoods as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British Spring Clean. In the past twelve months, people have relied on the places close to home – such as local parks and open green countryside – as somewhere to escape during lockdown, to exercise and to play. The campaign, which ran from May 28th to June 13th, saw the public become ‘litter heroes’ to help the charity to its aim this year of a million miles of litter-picking. A number of the district’s volunteer Street Pride groups also held group litter-picks. Cllr Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder responsible for parks and open spaces, said: “Over the past year, our parks and open spaces have been more important to residents than ever so it’s only right that we all play our part to keep them clean, green and free from litter so that everyone can continue to enjoy them at their very best.”

THE MAN WHO DUG DYKES (part 1)
T
he title of this article is The Man Who Dug Dykes. To be truthful, he was responsible for dykes being dug; there is no historical evidence that he did any digging himself, although he might have done. But he definitely got other people to do the digging of dykes. He came to this country as a drainage engineer but there is no historical evidence that he was trained as this. He was Cornelius Vermuyden, later to become Sir Cornelius Vermuyden. He was born in 1590 in Holland, a country that had been reclaiming land from the sea for many years, and if you travel around that country today you will see it is just a mass of dykes. We know nothing about Cornelius before he came to England other than he was working as a tax collector. Whilst doing that, a friend who had gone to England invited him over. His first job was at Dagenham. There was a breach in the banks of the Thames which had been reported more than twenty years earlier. Cornelius started work on the breach around 1621. A year later the commissioners found that little work had been done and the situation was worse rather than better and therefore refused to pay him. The men working for Cornelius were also grumbling as they hadn’t been paid.
52

Whittlesea
But in the same year, luckily for Cornelius, James 1 employed him to drain Windsor Park and gave him land in compensation for not being paid for the Dagenham job. And, apart from all this, Cornelius had fallen in love and married Katherine, daughter of a London merchant in November 1623. It must have been quite a day as on the same day and at the same church Katherine’s sister, Anne, married another Dutch man. A year later Cornelius and Katherine had a daughter, Sarah, the first of thirteen children. After five children, he decided to rent a house in London to live with his family and three years later he became a British citizen. After a few small jobs in the West, there came the biggest reclamation of land in England that had ever been done, nearly 60,000 acres. Charles I was keen for Hatfield Chase in Yorkshire to be drained. He had property here and he would gain financially from work done to it and Cornelius would gain by being given some land. Cornelius used the principle known as washes. When there was a lot of water, washes were used to stop the flooding by diverting the excess water to land especially put aside for this purpose. Welney Wash is an example near here. In 1626 Cornelius signed an agreement with JULY 2021
Charles to drain Hatfield Chase and in 1629 Cornelius received a knighthood for ‘recognition of the skill and energy that he had displayed in adding so large a tract to the cultivable lands of England.’ We are used to knighthoods being one of the highest awards a British person can get but in the 13th century a knighthood was for men that could fight and joust. By the 17th century it had no longer anything to do with fighting but the King used them as a money earner. So, Charles granted Cornelius a knighthood but Cornelius had to pay him monies for the privilege. Now, if Cornelius had declined the knighthood to try and save money Charles would fine him for refusing it, so, you couldn’t win. But the King made even more money off Vermuyden by selling him the royal manor at Hatfield. And, since the King had inherited the manor and got it for nothing Hatfield manor was pure profit for him. Unfortunately, things did not go well. Cornelius was successful, but, although land that got flooded didn’t, using the system of washes meant that land that did not get flooded now did. This meant that those people who were now flooded for some of the time were grumbling. On top of this, the inhabitants of the land that

was normally flooded and made a good living from the marshes being flooded weren’t happy. Without the marshes their living was gone. But, overall, the scheme had been a success and Cornelius was ruthless and unscrupulous in dealing with the various lawsuits that resulted. However, after a series of legal suits against him, he spent a short stay in prison and it did cost him money. There was more to come as in 1636 and 1697 Hatfield ended up having terrible floods. How successful had Cornelius been? And what will he achieve in the Fens? Read the next article, next month.

Mail Train Accident By Peter Wright on behalf of March & District Museum
T
he night of December 6th, 1879 was one of the coldest that William Thorndon had experienced during his twenty-year career as an engine driver.
With his fireman, Henry Bigley, he left Peterborough at 10.40pm with a fully laden thirty-wagon coal train towards March. They passed Whittlesea at 10.50pm with their engine running tender first. Whittlesea was the only intermediate point with fixed signals, otherwise traffic was regulated on a time interval system. The next train to leave Peterborough was the mail train to Ely consisting of seven vehicles drawn by a tender passenger engine. The driver, Charles Laxton, had eighteen years’ driving experience but had been on passenger trains for less than a year. The mail stopped at Whittlesea and left there at 11.20pm. There were only seven or eight passengers, including some sailors. About five miles beyond Whittlesea, the driver of the coal train became aware that the water pipes between the tender and the engine had frozen and he was concerned about the water level in his engine’s boiler. He stopped the train at 11.15pm about one and three-quarter miles from March. Some hot coals were withdrawn from the firebox and used to

thaw the pipes, a process which took fivesix minutes. The guard of the train, William Burroughs, a man of eight years’ experience, was unaware of why the train had stopped. After a few minutes he decided to protect his train as he knew the mail train would be soon approaching. He had only gone a short distance when he heard the goods engine whistle and he showed a green light and ran back to his van. Keen to get his train underway again, Thorndon restarted his engine, perhaps too vigorously, causing a wagon coupling towards the rear of the train to snap – dividing the train in two. Burroughs heard the coupling break and immediately exhibited a red light, causing Thorndon to stop again. Burroughs quickly set off again to protect his train. After three-four minutes delay Bigley was sent back to ascertain the problem. When he found the broken coupling, he called out to driver Thorndon to set back; Thorndon sounded the whistle and began to reverse. Burroughs, who had reached the gate house at Denis Crossing (possibly Whitemoor Road), heard the whistle and, thinking that the train was ready to proceed again, put one explosive detonator on the line and hurried back to his train. When he arrived, he discovered that the isolated wagons had still not been recoupled. Fireman Bigley returned to the engine and after Burroughs had recoupled the wagons, he showed a green light. The train began to move and Burroughs re-joined his brake van as it slowly passed him. However, as he did so he saw the engine of the mail train quickly approaching and had to jump for safety. Driver Charles Laxton claimed that the mail train was running at 30-35mph when he first saw the coal train tail lamps about one hundred yards ahead. He shut off steam immediately and reversed his engine but had no time to whistle for the guard to apply his brake. The fireman applied the tender handbrake. The driver jumped off his engine just before impact, tumbled over several times and suffered much bruising; the fireman suffered a broken arm. George Laxton, the mail train guard, had twentyseven years’ railway service. He had no warning and was knocked down by the impact. As soon as he extracted himself from the parcels and luggage, he went to the driver who he found lying in a garden groaning, he then left to protect his own train.
two wagons which were badly damaged. The coupling between the engine and tender parted and the latter finished up forty-five feet away derailed, as was the next vehicle, an empty horse box. No passengers were injured. Fortunately, a train had just passed on the other line. Single line working was introduced but the wreckage was not cleared or normal working restored until the weekend.
Driver Laxton was adamant that his engine had not exploded the fog signal put down by guard Burroughs some 644 yards from the point of the collision. A search found an unexploded detonator only 315 yards from the collision site. An inquiry acknowledged that the primary cause of the collision was unavoidable due to the frozen water pipes. The driver and the guard of the coal train were criticised for slack working. Driver Laxton of the mail train was criticised for not keeping a sharp lookout as others had claimed that visibility was up to half a mile. The railway company was encouraged to provide a block signalling system on the line rather than relying on timed intervals to prevent accidents. Can I see a Financial Adviser FREE of charge? The simple answer is yes by Eamonn Dorling
S
ometimes all you need is an assurance that you are doing the right thing. If it is that simple, not many advisers will charge for that. Sometimes you can do a straightforward piece of work yourself – when you know what you need to do. Again, few will charge for pointing you in the right direction. Be aware that there are two basic types of advisers; one is tied to a product provider, and the other is fully independent. The independent adviser draws on the entire market-place when providing solutions for you. A tied adviser offers solutions from a restricted range of providers. At an initial meeting (sometimes referred to as a fact-finding meeting) – you should challenge the adviser about their qualifications and experience before providing any information. The adviser will set out their suitability, what they do, the timescale and how they charge for the work you engage them to provide.
It is best to have a holistic review (looking at you and your needs, hopes and objectives as a whole) rather than restricting the conversation to one area or priority. Sometimes another aspect of your circumstances, experience or views can have a profound impact on other matters. When the main issue is addressed, understanding how one subject can impact another needs skill and expertise and can affect the outcome. If the initial meeting gets to this level of detail, the adviser will probably invite you to engage their services and determine what costs are likely to be involved. Sometimes payment of professional advice is made from the solution (for example, moving old pensions into a modern set-up – the charges can be made from the transfer value if you authorise it). In other
cases, a separate invoice can be paid from additional funds. Most professional services are paid for by one of three charging structures: • A fixed fee • A percentage of assets • An hourly rate. Sometimes there could be a combination of charges. All of this will be explained in an engagement letter so you will know what costs are involved based on what you want doing. Ongoing Service: Some financial advice and solutions may require very little ongoing advice or administration. Other matters such as investments and pensions really ought to be reviewed regularly – for which there is usually a modest fee paid from the plan. For example, if your investments are not fully reviewed following the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been a game-changer in investment portfolios, I recommend a root and branch review to ensure your circumstances and the investment world match perfectly. Always ask if there are any ongoing costs and what you will get for your money. Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.
