AUGUST 2021

Welcome to your August issue... T his month is a very special one for the Discovering magazines “family” as issue number 120 of our flagship, Discovering Bourne magazine represents the Ten-Year Anniversary of its arrival on the local scene

In that time, the “family” has grown to five, (Whittlesea, March, Wisbech and The Deepings being the other titles)… and we go from strength to strength! My own involvement with the “family” began in 2013 and it has been an enjoyable, and at times rather hair-raising, journey which I would not have missed for the world. I get such an enormous feeling of pride as I see our five magazines evolve over the course of each month, knowing that our wonderful regular contributors, our featured clients, and our fabulous sales, administration, design, and editorial specialists have combined to bring you an inspiring, interesting and entertaining magazine, month after month. Finally, talking of “families”, our front covers this month feature the smiling faces of my sister Paula and her husband Steve, at their wedding early in July. Love and best wishes to you both xx.

I recently had cause to self-isolate after coming in contact with someone who subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. I have to say when the instruction came through via my NHS phone app I felt very down as the thought of having to stay in again after so many months of lockdown was not something I relished. However self-isolate I did even though many tests showed that fortunately I was negative. Knowing I was OK but unable to go out with everyone else rediscovering their freedom actually seemed worse than when we were all in full lockdown. My confinement coincided with the end of England’s Euro 2020 campaign. After the pains of the pandemic, the tournament did appear to pull the country together, even those people who do not usually enjoy football. Unfortunately, the eventual outcome was all too predictable but at least the ride was fun while it lasted!

Opening Up The Future!

S

eptember 2021 will be hailed as the month when Peterborough finally becomes firmly established on the national Performing Arts map. That is the ambition of Pino Soccio, the enthusiastic founding force and Managing Director of Young Technicians.

The reason is that the Young Technicians Academy, a specialist educational facility, training students in all forms of the Performing Arts, Media and Live Events industries, will be opening its doors in Eagle Park, Yaxley. Local musician and technician, Pino, can call upon many years of experience, performing both locally, and also at national venues such as London’s O2 Arena. The inspiration behind Young Technicians came whilst Pino was working in a secondary school for many years, wanting to deliver something new and exciting for young people to take part in. Launched in Whittlesey in January 2016, a handful of students were trained in the live events industry. Since then, the scheme has expanded into many different educational establishments across Cambridgeshire, Peterborough, Fenland and beyond, and consists of a balance of theory work, practical work and endless possibilities for the students who take part. By becoming a Community Interest Company (C.I.C.) in July 2017 has really enabled it to grow, with money reinvested into the future of the scheme and the students within the community. Now, working with 4

a directorship team, Pino has created the Young Technicians Academy, due to open next month. The present Young Technicians programmes have a 98% pass rate, with 85% of students moving into higher education or into jobs related to their respective industries. All students are given multiple opportunities to showcase their new skills in a range of internal and external events, including festivals, showcases, concerts and tour days. A variety of industry professional workshops is hosted throughout the year, in partnership with touring engineers, performers and producers. At the Academy, specialist sessions will run for an hour a week and, during school holidays, there will be workshops, inventory days, intensive courses, and events, giving students a range of activities to choose from. At the new, purposebuilt, 2,600 sq.ft, Arts Centre in Yaxley, students will be able to collaborate between departments on any projects that students lead, or towards any coursework. The courses are designed to encourage students both academically and creatively, with a wide range of content across theoretical and practical knowledge. No prior knowledge is needed, as full training for each course pathway will be given. If you have a passion for any of the Performing Arts, then the Young Technicians Academy is the best place for you. Launching next year will be two BTECs, one in Production Arts and one in Performing Arts. If you want to study sound, lighting or stage management or, alternatively, tread the boards and have ambitions to be on the stage, then this unique BTEC programme will be for you. Socialisation!

ocialisation is certainly a BUZZ word with puppy owners. But what does socialisation actually mean? Let’s look to the dictionary: noun: socialisation; 1. the activity of mixing socially with others; 2. the process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society. Definition from Oxford Languages. The activity of mixing socially with others Many people take this to mean let your dog off the lead to play with all the other dogs and to go and meet every other person. Is this mixing socially? Imagine if I walked into Nisa and ran and jumped on everyone’s back or pulled at their sleeves or trouser legs! Imagine if you walked into the Co-op and every person you walked past jumped on you! Is that mixing socially? This is why many dogs become reactive because they tell other dogs DO NOT JUMP ON ME before they get jumped on. It is also why many dogs get fearful of other dogs as they hide away before they get jumped on! How many of these puppies that are allowed to run and play freely will come back when called? Not many, as the fun they are having is dosing them up with addictive chemicals like adrenalin which can cause dogs to become over-aroused and even reactive. Those that are not having fun are dosing up on the stress hormone cortisol which will increase problems with reactivity, anxiety, depression, weight loss, alopecia and more. Cortisol is dumped in quantity but depletes super slowly (days). Socialising in this way will have a massive impact on your dog’s behaviour. Your recall will be poor or non-existent, your loose lead walking will be impossible and your dog’s focus will be on other dogs and people – not you. Socialisation is your dog being able to meet other dogs and people in a controlled way ensuring that at the end of each interaction, you are the best thing ever to your dog.

Socialisation is just as much about your dog being able to ignore what is in the environment as it is about being able to interact with what or who is in the environment in a calm way. The process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society Here at The Dog House we focus on teaching your dog basic training and manners and then taking these skills into the outside world. This then gives you a toolbox full of things to do in the company of other dogs and people. Then, when you do let your dog off lead, your recall is there – you have taught value in the behaviour. If your dog has not been allowed to play and run up to every dog or jump up every person, they will be able to calmly walk on a loose lead past dogs and people. Join us for one of our Puppy Pre-School Sessions or sign up for one of our Puppy Schools. And here is a fantastic bonus for all Discovering Whittlesey readers... In Memory Of

REMEMBERING...

Caesar Smith

C

aesar was a popular and well-known character in Whittlesey where he ran the Letter A Gallery with his wife Trish for more than forty-five years. He had a great relationship with so many in the community and was famous for wearing his fisherman’s hat around town. He passed away on July 1st after a short illness. Born in Fletton in 1930, Caesar had a natural love of the countryside and was awarded an arts scholarship to Deacon’s Grammar School in Peterborough to follow his passion. Sadly, his father passed away soon after his scholarship began and at the age of fifteen, he became an apprentice in the field of engineering. He worked for Mitchell Engineering for twentyfive years as a draughtsman and eventually became Chief Planning Officer. In this role, he had a major hand in designing many of the power stations that were built in Britain and southern Ireland during the fifties and sixties. He also completed his National Service in the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and even gained the rank of sergeant.

At the age of forty, in 1970, however, Caesar had a change in career and left the “rat race” to throw himself into his great passion, art. He renovated the 17th century thatched public house, the Letter ‘A’ on Whitmore Street, Whittlesey, into a studio specialising in pottery and producing many artistic ceramic tiles, and eventually turned to painting

However, one thing which we feel might help you come to terms with your loss is to share with others some information and some of the many memories you may have. So, if you would like us to include a piece in our magazine about your

as his main vocation. Caesar specialised in oil painting and is best described as a romantic landscape artist, tying in with his love of nature. His artwork achieved great acclaim and was sold in eighteen countries across the world. Caesar Smith was also named among the one hundred best artists of the last century in Adrian Vincent’s 1989 book – 100 Years of Traditional British Painting. He leaves behind a loving wife, two children, Kim and Nicholas, as well as three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Caesar’s son Nicholas said: “Dad was a very educated man; he had a very high IQ and a fantastic memory; he loved his crosswords and quiz games. He was quite a character and was really funny but he didn’t suffer fools gladly. “I will always remember him as a kind and loving dad. Everybody loved him and I have no doubt we would have had a really large turnout for his funeral if it was not for the current restrictions.” loved one, maybe including some photographs, please get in touch with us and we would be delighted to share it with our many readers, (at no cost to yourself!) by publishing it in our next issue. The Beauty Of Teamwork

T

his is probably a flashback to my previous career when I was a sales manager responsible for a team of people, but it’s a principle that I’ve never forgotten and can be applied to so many situations today, and that is the benefits of working as a team. T Together E Everyone A Achieves M More I don’t profess to being a football fan, but none of us could escape the recent games of EURO 2020 where most of us would have been rooting for England. Even though they didn’t win, the thing that stood out for me most was the excellent teamwork. Even when the penalties were missed the rest of the team were there to encourage and console those who felt they had let the side down. Working as a team is everyone working together to achieve the same objective, be that in a sport, work, church or home setting. The beauty of working as a team is that you can bring all different types of personalities together and each one will have their own strengths and weaknesses.

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH Combining this together, it means that everyone can work to their strengths. What one person lacks, another will excel in and so the job gets done brilliantly. Here at the church, we work together to be a family, looking out for each other. Lockdown has been a challenging time for many people creating feelings of isolation and in some cases loneliness. God doesn’t want us to feel on our own; it says in Psalm 68 v6 God sets the lonely into families. We pride ourselves on being a church family working together to make sure all areas of need are catered for. Why not join us one Sunday at 10.45am? You are most welcome. At Glyn Jones Auctions we put our clients and their families first Unlike other auction houses we do not operate to profit from your belongings. We understand the difficulties and stress that can occur from having to clear a house, whether the reason for clearance is a bereavement or a downsizing. We offer a transparent service that ensures clients receive the most for their items. To demonstrate how our house clearance service works, here is our step-by-step guide of the whole process: STEP 1: We assess the property and will quote for the removal of all items. STEP 2: Once removed from the property, all items are still owned by you. We act as your agents and never take ownership over your goods. The items that are unfit for auction will be recycled or donated to local charity shops. STEP 3: All items fit for auction will be sold by us on behalf of you. All the money generated by the sale of these items is then given back to you, with just the inclusion of a service charge.

Real Life: Your Awareness Trumps Your Beliefs and Your Conclusions

In my June column I explained that 'conscious living' is our ability to be true to ourselves; the only sensible measure of true success that there is. I'll now explain why awareness, rather than beliefs, is key to that.

Y

ou may have heard the Chinese saying that: "He who chases two rabbits catches neither." Oh, that's sounds really wise! Yes, I'm going to commit that to myself as a belief system! Well done me! After all, I don't want to dilute my focus! Here's another proverb: "Don't put all your eggs in one basket!" Oh yes, that's really wise, too! After all, if one 'egg' has a problem I've still got the others to fall back on! Hang on a second! I've just realised that those two proverbs contradict each other. They are complete opposites! And pretty soon I'll realise that virtually all pieces of advice have opposite versions. I now realise that I can't just rely on my belief systems to run my life and make my decisions for me, I have to use my own skill and judgement to assess what's really true for me in each given moment. And it's this insight which led Rikka Zimmerman to this profound piece of wisdom:

"What if you can trust YOU but you can't trust belief systems?" Yeaaaah!!!!! What a fantastic insight! If you rely on belief systems, they can always let you down because they are only concepts that represent reality, not reality itself ('the map is not the territory'). But if you commit to always trusting your own knowing – that 'knowing' that you have when you stop justifying your beliefs and conclusions, and instead communicate openly with yourself - then you have the ultimate protection from tripping

yourself up! What is justifying? It's when you know something to be true, but aren't ready to admit it to yourself, and so you tell yourself an overly intellectualised story that justifies going against your own true 'knowing', your own inner wisdom. In Kissing Consciousness, justifying is an expression of Fear Consciousness. So, we need a new relationship to beliefs in which we hold them lightly, rather than lock them in as conclusions, which are an inhibitor to living from awareness. At first, this may be unfamiliar and uncomfortable, but with practice we can nurture and develop our natural ability to make decisions for ourselves and strengthen that capacity. There is no crutch this way, nothing to rely on, but for those who choose this way of life the rewards are a 'real' life. This is the choice of conscious living!

SUPPORTING LOCAL YOUNGSTERS’ LEARNING By Steve Barclay MP

F

enland-born author, journalist and philosopher William Godwin once said: “He that loves reading has everything within his reach.” That’s certainly true for me and I hope my annual Read to Succeed campaign will help youngsters in the constituency to feel the same. Thanks to generous donations from organisations across the patch, the 1500 Year 4 pupils across North East Cambridgeshire will have their own book to keep and read during this year’s school summer holidays. Companies and organisations that have donated include: Tina Gambell Faster Lente Llamas, McCains Foods, Fraser Dawbarns, Anglian Water, Bretts, Nestle Purina, Fenland District Council, Bishop of Ely, Stainless Metalcraft, Swann Edwards, Peter Humphrey, Fenmarc, Bowser Ollard and Bentley, Clarion Futures and Whittlesey Town Council. With the disruption to education over the past year, it is more important than ever to support our youngsters’ learning and Year 4 is the age at which children often begin to read more independently. Also, please don't forget to go to your local library to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge.

While local services are vital, it’s also important that we have fit-for-purpose major hospitals to deal with complex needs and procedures. Therefore, I’m supporting the campaign to rebuild the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn. Many constituents will have paid a visit to the hospital at one time or another and recent visitors will have seen that the roof is currently supported by almost two hundred metal poles. My son was born at the QEH so I know from personal experience how important it is to many families in the constituency and beyond. Finally, I wanted to reinforce my objections to the enormous incinerator that developer MVV is planning for Wisbech. I think there are many key concerns that still haven’t been fully addressed, such as the impacts on health, traffic, and the environment amongst others. Formal public consultation is ongoing and I’d encourage anyone against the proposed incinerator to register their objections on the link www.mvv-medworthchp.co.uk/documents.php

Regular readers will know I am a fierce advocate for health care being delivered as close to home as possible, particularly low risk, high volume, routine services. Therefore, it’s great to see the redevelopment plans for the Princess of Wales Hospital have gone through the planning committee stage with the thumbs up from officers at East Cambs District Council. Also, I’m delighted that Doddington MIU has reopened after a prolonged closure due to the extreme pressure on the health system during the exceptional circumstances of the last year. I will continue to work with local health bosses to encourage more health services into sites at Doddington, Ely and North Cambs hospitals as part of our recovery from COVID.

SUE RYDER EXTENDS VIRTUAL SUPPORT

Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice is extending the support it offers to people living in Whittlesey and Fenland. Its virtual day service is available to anyone living locally with neurological conditions such as MND, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, dementia or following a stroke. Through an online eight-week programme, people have access to Sue Ryder experts specialising in holistic care and are given the chance to join in exercise, complementary therapy and relaxation sessions and enjoy opportunities to socialise and take part in interactive activities such as quizzes, art and poetry and listen to guest speakers. Since the launch, two eight-week programmes have delivered specialist support to people in the comfort of their homes, and the service has been met with resounding praise from patients. Quotes from patients include: “These sessions have become my lifeline;” “It picks me up on my sad days and makes me laugh on my good ones;” “Since our sessions started my whole outlook and mood have lifted so much;” and “Catching up with the groups and sharing even the smallest of snippets makes me feel one of many instead of feeling all alone.”

we enjoyed a fascinating virtual talk by an up-andcoming Formula 3 racing driver, which was enjoyed by everyone on the session.

Following the successful launch of the service, spaces are now available for new patients.

Patients are able to create a fully individualised programme of five one-hour sessions per week over an eight-week block at the weekly cost of £35, which patients can pay for from their personal care budget or via continuing healthcare funding allocated to support their eligible social care needs.

Referrals can be easily made by anyone – patients themselves, their carers or a lead healthcare professional by emailing sryc.thorpehall. dayservices@nhs.net or calling 01733 225900. Jo Hazel, Sue Ryder nurse leading the service, said: “We want to make more people in our local community aware of the virtual day services available to them at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall. I think a lot of people wrongly think our virtual day hospice is only for people with a palliative diagnosis and that is not the case – we’re here for anyone locally living with a long-term neurological condition like dementia or following a stroke.

“We’re absolutely thrilled with the positive feedback we’ve received so far from the people we’re supporting with our virtual service, but we’d love to offer more care to more people, boosting people’s wellbeing.”

AUGUST 2021

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR July 5th, 1948, was an historic moment in our country’s history. It was the day our pioneering National Health Service (NHS) was born, bringing free healthcare to everyone. We have treasured it ever since, but never more so since March 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic gripped the UK and utterly changed all our lives. We were suddenly at war with a ruthless, invisible enemy and on the frontline were our NHS doctors, nurses and paramedics, plus platoons of critical workers keeping our shops open and stocked, our streets safe and our essential services running. During this past month we had the chance to show our gratitude to all NHS and front-line staff with an annual day of thanks, and remembrance of those who lost their lives because of this dreadful disease. The first NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day took place on Monday, July 5th, 2021, with a series of events involving every aspect of society and raising money for two excellent causes – NHS Charities Together, which supports two hundred and fifty hospitals and their charitable trusts, and the National Care Association, representing 1.6 million workers caring for some of society’s frailest citizens.

please visit their web pages where your offering in support of them can be made. As we emerge from the worst of the pandemic, I am sure that most of us are aware of the many local organisations that have sustained the community in these difficult times and whilst my thanks again go to them, I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all. Every small contribution, whether it be looking out for a neighbour, shopping for an elderly or vulnerable person, a telephone call to someone living alone or simply being a friend has been invaluable. A big thank you to you all. Regrettably, the Mayor's Summer Ball planned for July 31st fell victim of the pandemic restrictions but it is planned to hold a similar event in March next year so look out for details nearer the time. For now, please continue to keep safe and if you haven't yet had full vaccination then please do so. Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council

In Whittlesey a church service was planned for St Mary's Church, organised by the local clergy, Whittlesey Town Council and the Cambridgeshire Freemasons, who were acting under the auspices of the United Grand Lodge of England, who are one of the core supporters of the event as part of a nationally organised Freemasonry event. The extension of restrictions due to COVID-19 meant the cancellation of this event but with the support of Fenland Youth Radio we were able to bring to you all a flavour of the day to acknowledge all the hard work and sacrifices made by our valiant NHS Frontline Workers. Should you wish to make a donation to NHS Charities Together or the National Care Association

Your Garden

August Gardening Tips ow is the time for some forward planning, which is the key to a successful plot.

As space becomes available when crops finish, you can plant overwintering crops such as Brussels sprouts, spring cabbage and winter cauliflowers. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modules – remember to cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars. Also, for harvesting in the autumn and beyond, you could sow lettuce (keep out of the glare of direct sun), rocket, spring onion, radish plus winter salads, including mibuna, mizuna, mustard leaf and lamb’s lettuce. Watch out for potato blight, unsightly brown patches which appear rapidly on the foliage, common at the end of August when the weather is humid and damp. The leaves can be covered in a matter of days and the plant will collapse. All is not lost if you cut off the stems at ground level before the blight reaches the tubers.

Jobs for August include: • Prune gooseberry and currant bushes. • Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot where you have not grown them for at least three years. Planting them through plastic will help conserve moisture and provide warmth during the winter. • Make sure that you harvest courgettes, regularly before they grow too large. • Cut to the ground all summer fruiting raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green

March Whittlesea

canes that will produce next year’s fruit. Take care not to damage the new bright green stems. • Tomatoes, pumpkins, and squash need feeding with a tomato fertiliser. • Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. Continue pinching out and do not forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden – also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees. • Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems. • Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow “green manure” such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil. • Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year. August sees the National Allotments Week (9th-15th), with the theme “Plotting for the Future”, celebrating the contribution that allotments make to a sustainable future. If you want to know more about this and the National Allotment Society, visit www.nsalg.org.uk Happy gardening!

Mortgage Advice

Homeownership Schemes

S

ADVICE FROM CAREN PALMER-WELCH, MORTGAGE AND PROTECTION BROKER

aving for a deposit, securing a mortgage, and finding the right home at the right price is difficult for some people, which can result in them being priced out of buying on the open market. If you are in this situation, it is worth looking into the Government schemes on offer to help you get on the property ladder.

HELP TO BUY The Government’s new Help to Buy scheme replaced the previous scheme. It came into place on April 1st 2021, and comes to an end in March 2023. The new scheme introduced property price caps and is restricted to first-time buyers only, supporting people onto the housing ladder. You’ll need to pay a minimum deposit of 5% of the property purchase price and arrange a repayment mortgage of at least 25% of the property purchase price. You can then borrow an equity loan to cover from 5% and up to 20% of the property purchase price of your newly-built home. If the property is in London, you can borrow up to 40%.

SHARED OWNERSHIP This route gives first-time buyers, previous homeowners who cannot afford to buy one now, and existing shared owners, the option to buy a share of their home (between 25% and 75%) and pay rent on the remaining share. You can buy a home through shared ownership if your household earns £80,000 a year or less (or £90,000 a year or less in London). 95% MORTGAGES From April 19th, first-time buyers are now able to purchase a home with only a 5% deposit. The scheme is aimed at increasing the supply of 5% deposit mortgages for credit-worthy households by supporting lenders to offer these products through a government-backed guarantee. First announced in the 2021 budget, the scheme will help first-time buyers or current homeowners secure a mortgage with just a 5% deposit to buy a house of up to £600,000 – providing an affordable route to homeownership for aspiring homeowners. The Government has offered lenders the guarantee they need to provide mortgages that cover the other 95%, subject to the usual affordability checks.

*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

“Everybody Needs Good Neighbours!” By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades As life starts to get back to a new kind of normal, a major winner of the pandemic has got to be the nation’s community spirit, highlighted in the ‘Fourth of July Thank You Day’. So, let’s keep that going – and look at one easy but overwhelmingly effective way of supporting your local community... signing up to your local Neighbourhood Watch! Not only will neighbours be joining forces against crime in the area, but they can also be part of an invaluable network with many benefits – and be the ‘eyes and ears’ of your street. Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) works as a team where everyone comes together to make their communities safer and improve the wellbeing of its residents, working with the police, local authorities and many other voluntary and professional organisations. Living in a NHW area can: • Lead to lower home insurance. • Allow neighbours to keep in touch via a private Facebook or WhatsApp group. • Promote a communication system to warn about crimes in the local area, for example, cold callers operating in your street, or just to ask, “Which colour bin is it this week?” • Give a visible warning to burglars that the area is a NHW zone through displaying window stickers and road signs. The unfortunate news is that, as lockdown eases in the UK, we’re expecting a rise in burglaries. The NHW association has recently partnered with the Home Office to run a social media awareness campaign to alert those most at risk, giving them practical tools that are proven to prevent burglary by nearly fifty times. The ‘There’s safety in neighbours’ message – featuring the iconic black and yellow branding – encourages use of the “WIDE” combination of security measures in the home. Properties with the “WIDE” security combination (window locks, indoor lights on a timer, door double or deadlocks, and external lights on a timer or sensor) – are nearly fifty times more protected from burglary than those with no security. A really important aspect of a NHW scheme is to improve wellbeing in the community by encouraging activities aimed at improving neighbourliness, reducing loneliness and by fostering a community spirit. To find out more about joining a NHW scheme in your area, visit www.ourwatch.org.uk AUGUST 2021

Matters FOOD BUSINESSES MUST REGISTER WITH COUNCIL

Fenland District Council has reminded new food businesses that they need to register their services by law, following an online boom in business during the COVID-19 pandemic. There has been a big increase in the number of new food businesses starting up from home and advertising via social media, such as Facebook and Instagram, in the past year – with the Food Standards Agency estimating a forty-four percent increase nationally. Now the council is reminding local businesses and residents that anyone who produces or even just repackages food or drink from a home setting or mobile vehicle is required by law to register with the authority. This is to ensure they are meeting the legal requirements, such as producing food in hygienic conditions and having adequate allergen labelling. You can find out more and register for free online via www.fenland.gov.uk/foodbusinessregistration

We bring you items of interest for your home and community. If there is something you’d like us to cover or you have something to say please get in touch at: Discovering Whittlesea, PO Box 164, Bourne PE10 1ET editor.whittlesea@discoveringmagazines.co.uk

WI MEMBERS TO FINALLY MEET UP THIS MONTH Coates WI is looking forward to starting its meetings again at Coates Village Hall on Wednesday, August 4th at 7.30pm. Guests and new members are always welcome to join the group which meets on the first Wednesday of the month (no meeting January) at Coates Village Hall. For further information, please contact Fiona on (01733) 208516 or Jen on 0770 3385661.

LADYSMITH WI GET TOGETHER AFTER GROUP WALKS Whittlesey Ladysmith WI’s first meeting since ‘lockdown’ began in March last year was held in July in the garden next to St Andrew’s Parish Hall. During the June heatwave the group enjoyed a ‘socially distanced’ picnic under a tree in St Mary’s churchyard. Later in the month several members met for a walk around the town and along the Bower to Ashline Lock. The group has planned a varied programme for the rest of the year, including talks, demonstrations and lunches. In December, Ladysmith WI plans to hold a party to celebrate its half-century anniversary. The next meeting will be held at St Andrew’s Parish Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday, August 10th and will feature a talk by author Sylvie Short. Guests are always welcome to come along to meetings. CHANCE TO HELP SHAPE NEW WHITTLESEY HERITAGE WALK A public consultation will be launched this month to help shape the creation of a new heritage walk in Whittlesey. Fenland District Council is developing plans for the Whittlesey Heritage Walk, a new selfguided trail to celebrate the town’s heritage and encourage visitors to explore its hidden histories. The route identified for the walk is an updated version of the Whittlesey Town Trail, but with highlighted routes to Kings Dyke Nature Reserve, where a new Heritage Centre will be located, Lattersey Nature Reserve and Whittlesea Railway Station, as well as a scenic riverside walk to the south of the town centre. With way markers and information boards along the route, the walk will illustrate local points of interest and historic landmarks as well as provide information on local transport options and access to the National Cycling Network Route 63 which runs through the town. Now residents are being asked to help choose a new logo for the Whittlesey Heritage Walk, and to share any stories or anecdotes they have about the town, the route or local historic buildings that could be included in the walk.

Views are also being sought on what information they would like to see displayed along the route, the location of information boards and seating on the route, and whether people would prefer to access the information by phone app, webpage or brochure. The online consultation is open from August 1st until August 31st. Visit www.fenland.gov.uk/consultations to have your say. The idea was originally conceived through Fenland District Council’s Growing Fenland project, featuring Masterplans to drive growth and regeneration in each of the district’s four towns, and is now being taken forward thanks to funding from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA). Cllr Chris Seaton, the council’s portfolio holder responsible for heritage, said: “This is a really exciting project to create a new heritage walk that will encourage local people and visitors to explore and learn about Whittlesey’s rich heritage while increasing footfall into the town centre.” Paper copies of the consultation survey are available at the Whittlesey Town Council offices in Queen Street or on request via email at: neighbourhoodstrategy@fenland.gov.uk For more information on the project, visit www.fenland.gov.uk/whittleseyheritagewalk

Finance

Inheritance Tax (IHT) By Eamonn Dorling

S

ome of you may remember what Roy Jenkins, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, said in 1986: IHT is ‘a voluntary tax paid by those who distrust their heirs more than they dislike the Inland Revenue.’ IHT is probably the most significant single bite ever taken by the taxman on an individual’s wealth. For these reasons, it makes sense to take action by putting your affairs in order. You need to carefully plan for and consider using the many allowances that could apply to an estate. Some of these might not be available in all cases – an experienced financial adviser will advise based on your situation. A simple calculation is to add up all the taxable estate, deduct all the allowances, then consider the intentions of a valid will. The residual value is usually taxed at forty percent (this is a simplification). An important strategy that can be very effective is to move assets outside of the taxable estate. Trusts and some qualifying investments can help. Some measures are effective immediately, some take seven years to complete, some only take two years, and some could be ineffective! For example, pension funds can be good IHT planning tools. Likewise, knowing how the residence nil rate bands work and leaving an inheritance in trust can help if they are actioned early enough to be effective. Annual allowances, gifting and spending money can benefit when they can be most helpful while reducing the taxable estate. A gifted asset must be a gift without strings

attached, so you cannot give it away if you need something. How much do you need in retirement, for example, or if long term care is required? Usually, a combination of financial and legal advice is necessary. A well written will is an excellent starting point. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results and any forecast is not a reliable indicator of future performance. So, You Need a Rewire?

R

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

ewiring your home is not usually something that can be avoided; it is only when the installation in your home needs replacing.

To prepare you … you are likely to have holes in your walls that will need plastering. Unless you are having the installation surface mounted in trunking, or the walls of the building are hollow, there is going to be damage. We always minimise it as much as we can, and can arrange for the walls to be plastered for you if you wish.

Tips to make the rewire as painless as possible

1

Warn the neighbours. Nobody likes conflict, but there is the potential for it, especially if they are shift workers. But most people are happy to live with the noise, providing they know it is happening, and for how long. Alto Electrical have a letter template that you can have, to send to your neighbours that will warn them that the work is going to be carried out, how long it will last, and it will provide them with our contact details in case they need to discuss anything, such as where we are parked. Alternatively, we are happy to send that letter ourselves.

to keep providing power overnight.

3

Don’t go too far! When we are working on your home, often there may be decisions we need you to make. For example, we can’t access a certain area, so we would check with you if it is ok to go via another route. Sometimes, we need to ask questions, like, if we can’t find your stop cock to bond it, we may ask you if you know where it is. You may know that the kitchen used to be in a different room which we could then look in.

4 5

Put things away. Alto Electrical always cover things up when we are carrying out any dusty electrical work, but there is a lot of dust created in the process. So, even with everything covered up, it is impossible to remove all the dust sheets without disturbing it. Book the other trades in. If we’re not arranging the plasterers and decorators, get them booked in (leaving a little buffer). The quicker the plastering and decorating is done, the quicker the dust will go away. You don’t want to be waiting weeks or months before you can get all the dust out of the air. If you think you need a rewire, please get in touch and we can help to advise you.

2

Move out. I often ask my customers to move out when they are having a rewire. Not only are you going to avoid the worst of the dust, but we will be able to get finished much quicker if we’re not having to rewire circuits in stages. It also considerably reduces the cost as we can just press on with the work, instead of needing
