Welcome to your September issue...
T
here may still be a lot of caution around as we move slowly back to our pre-March 2020 lives. School “bubbles” are set to burst as our youngsters return to their studies this month – massive congratulations to those who achieved success in their external exams in the summer and good luck in the years to come. What better way to boost a whole country’s spirit (and realisation that we’re maybe not too bad a country) than to have witnessed the recent Tokyo Olympics? Amongst all the fabulous performances, one in particular stands out for me Charlotte Worthington, after falling off her bike but then having another go at an almost impossible trick and landing a BMX gold – if at first you don’t succeed! Hoping you all enjoy our offering for this month, as nights start to pull in and “you know what” is a little over a hundred days away!

With COVID restrictions having largely been removed for those people fortunate enough to have been double-jabbed, many will have looked to take advantage by taking – or planning – their summer holidays, with most hoping for some much-needed sun. This year’s summer has unfortunately largely been a washout with rainy, gloomy days only briefly punctuated by sunshine. Like many people, we have some garden furniture which we look to use during the summer months, but as I once again put the cushions back into the shed the other day to avoid yet another downpour of biblical proportions, I realised that they had been out for a full 24-hour period on only one occasion this year! However, when one sees the damage and heartache caused by the high temperatures and the resulting fires in mainland Europe and the USA, perhaps the Fenland summer of 2021 doesn’t seem that bad after all…

Recipe
QUICK
Cauliflower Cheese Cauliflower is now in season so what better reason to include this classic side dish as our September recipe?
Method
1 Pre-heat oven to 200˚C/180˚C fan/gas 6.
Serves 6
Ingredients 100g mature cheddar, grated
50g fresh white breadcrumbs Handful flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped 1 large cauliflower, cut into florets 1L full-fat milk, plus a splash 1 small onion, halved 85g butter 85g plain flour Recipe sourced from www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes

2
In a small bowl, mix the cheese with the breadcrumbs and parsley, and set aside. Put the cauliflower florets in a large saucepan, cover with water and a splash of milk (this stops the cauliflower smelling) and bring to the boil. Cook for 2-3 mins until tender, then drain.
3
In a separate saucepan, pour in the milk, add the onion and some seasoning, bring to the boil, then take off the heat. In a small saucepan, make a roux by melting the butter slowly, then adding the flour, stirring to make a paste. While still over a low heat, add the boiled milk, discarding the onion. Using a whisk, beat the milk together with the roux and bring to the boil. Cook for 2 mins until the sauce is lovely and thick – make sure the heat is not too high, otherwise it will catch on the bottom and burn.
4
Transfer the cooked cauliflower to a casserole dish, pour over the sauce and top with the cheese and breadcrumb mix. Bake in the oven for 20 mins until golden and bubbling.

PETERBOROUGH NEW THEATRE TRUST
TO RAISE £3.5M TO BUY THEATRE
N
ow that Peterborough's New Theatre has re-opened following the long COVID-19 closure, an excellent opportunity has arisen for the community to buy the theatre and start to improve its facilities – whilst also protecting its long-term future.
A new community interest company, the Peterborough New Theatre Trust, is being formed to purchase the freehold of the theatre and ensure it is maintained as the ‘anchor’ cultural venue for the city centre in perpetuity. The trust has negotiated an offer to buy the theatre for just £3.25 million from its current landlord, excellent value particularly given that local philanthropist Peter Boizot refurbished the theatre at a cost of over £10m not so long ago. The trust believes that communities in and around Peterborough will step forward and either
donate or lend most of the cost of the investment, augmented by grants and loans from government agencies, other charities and local philanthropists. The trust has already secured £150,000 towards the target. At this stage we are looking for Peterborough people to show their support by becoming ‘An Angel of the New Theatre’ by simply emailing Angels@Dawe.co.uk and telling us how they could help buy the theatre. We are particularly looking for people who want to help us promote the Peterborough New Theatre Trust, through media, social media, virtual meetings and face-to-face. Join our campaign to bring the Peterborough New Theatre into community ownership, to ensure that Peterborough and its people can continue to benefit from a first-class arts venue in the city! Please visit www.newtheatre-peterborough.com to check out their forthcoming shows.
We are particularly looking for people who want to help us promote the Peterborough New Theatre Trust, through media, social media, virtual meetings and face-to-face.

Your Garden
S
September Gardening Tips ummer draws to a close, days shorten, and there will be quite a bit of clearing to do on the vegetable patch.
Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread disease, so put them on the compost heap, so long as they are not diseased. You could then rough dig and cover the ground for the winter or you could sow “green manures”. Field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia are just a few examples. If you have a light soil they can be left in over winter, but those with clay soils benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig. It is important that you lift potatoes before the arrival of cold, damp days and before the slugs and worms can invade the crop: make sure they are well dried out before storing them in light-proof sacks and only store undamaged tubers. Onions should also be lifted and if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frostfree place such as a shed. Cut courgettes and marrows regularly because they will be finished by the end of the month, as will outdoor tomatoes. Remove any green tomatoes and place them in a drawer or shoebox to ripen. September is a good time to plant several crops which are hardy enough to withstand the winter and they will provide a steady supply of fresh leaves through to next spring. • Winter lettuces (Valdor, Arctic King or Winter Density are good varieties to choose).

• Spring greens – seeds can be sown in modules for planting out in October. • Spinach. • Lamb’s lettuce and oriental leaves. • Onion sets and garlic. • Planting broad beans in the autumn is a good way to avoid blackfly as they crop earlier. Crop covers keep the temperature slightly higher than the ambient temperature and protect the plants from getting battered by harsher weather conditions. A few jobs that need doing this month include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground. • Harvest apples and pears as they become ready and pick the late season strawberries and raspberries, which will keep cropping right up until the first frost. Watch out for wasps! • Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry. • Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off, as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds. • Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in. • Prune blackberries when picking is over: cut out all of the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leaving new canes unpruned. • Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners. Happy gardening!

A charity who cares for the environment, re-using bikes instead of sending them to landfill...
R
e-Cycle Bikes to Africa, a small charity based in Essex, receives used bikes, and ships them to rural communities in Africa.
Across the UK thousands of bikes are thrown away or lie unused in sheds and garages, whilst many people in Africa are forced to walk for hours carrying heavy loads to get to market, school, work and to fetch water and crops.
Enriching the lives of those less fortunate, by giving them the independence of a bike really does change lives. Our bikes provide people with opportunities to gain new skills and sustainable income which enables them to invest in their own projects. Bikes which may not be suitable to send to Africa are stripped down for spare parts or refurbished and sold to the community here in the UK. The charity was formed in 1997 and to date more than 118,000 bikes have been sent to African
S E PTEM B ER 2021
countries. Imagine where those bikes may have ended up if they had not been re-used? Re-Cycle touches the lives of people in the UK, as well as overseas, by providing life skills and social support to a diverse community through our volunteering programme. Donating used bikes helps change lives, reduces the impact on landfill and makes for a cleaner environment. Your nearest drop off location is Gladwell’s Pet & Country Store, Peterborough. If you wish to make a financial donation towards our project, please visit www.re-cycle.org Registered Charity No. 1063570

Consumer Advice
Get ‘Scam-savvy’ this September in Less Than Ten Minutes By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades When it comes to fighting fraud, there is a free and easy way to help stamp out scammers. Safe Local Trades are proud to be working in partnership with the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP). CAPASP is a county-wide partnership of public, private and voluntary sector organisations, committed to working together to stop scams and doorstep crime across the county. This is something that Safe Local Trades has also been championing for over a decade. Scams are fraud and fraud is a crime – and it may come as no surprise to know that criminals have used the COVID-19 pandemic to target victims online, by e-mail or via text; mainly through impersonation scams, romance fraud and investment scams. Parcel fraud, HMRC, NHS Test and Trace, vaccination, ticket fraud, social media investment fund scams and attempts to dupe Tax Credits customers are amongst the top set of sophisticated schemes. Each year, scams cost the UK economy between £5bn-£10bn. In addition to the financial impact, scams can have a severe emotional and psychological impact upon victims. While anyone, irrespective of age, gender, education or economic background, can be a victim of a scam, these crimes are experienced particularly by people in our communities who are vulnerable for a variety of reasons, including poverty, isolation, frailty, disability and cognitive impairment, and by those who have been targeted specifically by organised, predatory criminals. Here is how YOU can help: It is easy to become a Friend Against Scams, just by attending a short online awareness session. In just eight minutes, you will be guided through types of scams, how to spot a scam victim, spotting the signs of a scam, helping family and friends and reporting and advice. Local councils, community groups, charities, businesses, schools, housing associations and other organisations or individuals can become supporters. You will receive useful information from CAPASP to share with your community and supporters also have access to resources such as posters and leaflets. The online training, resources and more information can be found at https://bit.ly/scam-training S E P T E M BE R 2 0 2 1

Shocking News!
‘Back to School’ Advice
I
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
t’s that time of year when we are getting our little ones ready for the new school year ahead. I know I’m often not surprised when I see how much my three sons can destroy their shoes and trousers on a frequent basis! I think many of us will be aware just how curious, and, I dare say, destructive their young minds and fingers can be. Picking at seams and soles, pulling threads and even cutting away at things with knives or scissors. I am hoping that I’m not completely alone here!
If you’ve got a creative child, like my eldest, they may also like to build things. We’ve spent an absolute fortune on Lego over the years, as it was the only thing that would keep him entertained for any length of time. But, over the summer holidays, I was sorting through his room, and I found there were a couple of things that were really quite frightening.
pushed in the plug and received a shock. Some of you may know from my sponsored haircut, that he has a heart condition, so this is alarming. He went on to tell me that it was ok because it tripped off and he didn’t really feel it!
So, this is me appealing to you on two counts.
1 2
As a mother, to ask you when you are looking through to collect your children’s BACK TO SCHOOL kit, to take an extra moment to check your children’s electrical appliances in their bedroom.
As an electrician, to ask you to make sure that you have RCD protection on your board (consumer unit), and if you have, make sure you regularly check it - (do it now!) If you find any damaged cables or electrical goods that are damaged (or taken to pieces) please ensure that they are either discarded or repaired.
Over the recent months, his heated blanket must have stopped working and he knew that the first thing he should do is to check the fuse. He doesn’t need mum’s help, as he is thirteen now and knows much more than me [sarcasm!] To fix it and test it, he took another fuse from another appliance and plugged it in ... WITHOUT putting the back on the plug. Upon finding this, I, of course, questioned what had happened. It was explained that he had

GREAT NIGHTS AND WHITTLESEY COUNCILLLOR SURGERIES RE-UNITED FOR HALLOWE’EN Dance floors empty for so long? Tapping feet remained still for ages? Devoid of soul, a space where the Motown used to be? No rhythm? No buzz? Well, not anymore. COUNCIL EXTENDS CITIZEN’S ADVICE SERVICE Fenland District Council has extended its dedicated Citizen’s Advice service to ensure residents continue to have access to free financial and employment advice as the Government’s furlough scheme begins to come to an end. The service, which is available through the council’s COVID-19 Community Hub, was launched in March to help people to access more specialist support, more quickly. Now the service has been extended until the end of October to make sure support is available as the Job Retention Scheme, known as furlough, is phased out. You can contact the hub on (01354) 654321 or email covid19@fenland.gov.uk

LADYSMITH WI CELEBRATES ANNIVERSARY Whittlesey Ladysmith WI has celebrated its 50th anniversary with a cake donated by Beryl Jepson, who together with Denise Hall, has been a member of the WI for fifty years. During the meeting, author Sylvie Short gave a talk about how she lived her dream to write books.
NEW PICNIC BENCHES INSTALLED AT MANOR FIELD New picnic benches have been installed at Whittlesey’s Manor Field to replace old wooden ones that have been badly worn or vandalised. A plan between Whittlesey Town Council and Whittlesey Street Pride to replace the benches emerged late last year. Cllr Roy Gerstner took on the role of applying for the funding and liaison with councils, with Alan Hobbs, Vice-Chairman of Street Pride, becoming project manager. Three quotes were obtained from UK manufacturers of ‘fully recycled plastic benches’ before a design was chosen and funding of £6075 was applied for and granted from ‘The Glassmoor Bank Wind Turbine Fund’ through Fenland District Council. Eight benches were ordered in May of this year, with two fully accessible for wheelchair users, and in June the benches were delivered and Alan Hobbs set about building them. Local contractor Phil Brannigan (Groundworks) installed the concrete bases and by the end of July all eight were in position and secured; four located by the play and skate area and four near the Bower. Speaking at the official ribbon cutting, Cllr Gerstner said: “The picnic bench project is the latest enhancement to the Manor Field, and I acknowledge ex-Cllr Gary Swan’s fantastic play area equipment upgrade a few years ago. “I would like to thank Glassmoor Bank Wind Turbine Fund for their grant for the benches, Whittlesey Town Council for their grant for the installation costs, Mr Phil Brannigan for the groundworks and finally Mr Alan Hobbs for project managing this initiative for all to enjoy.” Photo: courtesy RWT Photography/Fenland Youth Radio 26

Guests and new members are welcome to join the group which meets on the first Wednesday of the month (no meeting January) at Coates Village Hall at 7.30pm. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR At long last we are emerging from restrictions imposed on us all during the COVID epidemic and I am sure we are all looking forward optimistically to resuming some manner of normality in our lives. Most town or district councils elect a separate mayor and leader, and their roles are quite distinct from each other. At Whittlesey Town Council these roles are combined. The role of a mayor is primarily a civic function responsible for promoting his or her local town or district by visiting adjoining towns and districts and other important organisations with his/her consort, e.g. in our area the United States Air Force bases at Alconbury and Molesworth. The mayor and consort will also host local events to reciprocate and also to raise monies for worthy charities. Other duties will include supporting local festivals and being in attendance at Remembrance Day ceremonies. During my previous term of office last year most of these functions were cancelled or modified but now Ann and I appear to be well and truly back on the circuit and we were delighted recently to attend a mayor-making ceremony hosted by Huntingdon Town Council at the new community centre in Coneygear. I am delighted to report that our diaries looking forward are becoming increasingly full.
for which he or she has been elected by the general public. The tasks of mayor and leader would be impossible to carry out without the support of the town clerk and the other elected councillors. I am indeed fortunate to have at my disposal a very talented and hardworking town clerk in Mrs Sue Piergianni and those of you who have either visited or contacted the town council offices will know of the efficiency and professionalism of our town clerk. In addition to her usual duties, which incidentally seem to increase each year, Sue has the added burden of handling most of the matters affecting our commercial and domestic tenants at Peel House which she does with the minimum of complaint. I am also extremely fortunate to have the services of experienced councillors at hand. Cllr Chris Boden is the current leader of Fenland District Council, Cllr Alex Miscandlon is the chairman of Fenland District Council and my deputy mayor, Cllr Mrs Dee Laws, is the Fenland District Council portfolio holder for planning, Cllr Mrs Kay Mayor being a past chairman of Fenland District Council. Whittlesey and the surrounding villages are well served by your councillors and are well placed at district level to address your concerns to a wider audience and use their influence accordingly, for which I am very grateful. Until next time… Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council
A further important duty of the mayor is to chair the monthly town council meetings which are now reverting to physical meetings at Peel House as opposed to the Zoom technology previously employed. In contrast, the leader holds the responsibility of ensuring that the day-to-day business of the council is run in a smooth and professional manner. Additionally, he or she will have individual responsibility for the particular ward and/or district

Heritage Open Days: September 10th-19th 2021
E
stablished in 1994, this celebration of our national culture has grown into the country’s largest community festival, and we are fortunate to be in one of the most important areas, historically speaking, in the country.
Our local history and heritage link back to 5,000BC and visitors are being welcomed to varying events on individual dates between September 10th and 19th. Some may require booking, some have guided tours, others are more casual. However, all contain fascinating local insights and are looking forward to welcoming visitors of all ages. Although on a smaller scale than previous years, there are still many local venues being manned by volunteers opening the doors to the public to showcase local gems. In addition to the usual ‘big hitters’ like Peterborough Cathedral (with candlelit tours to music), there’s a chance to look
at Railworld Wildlife Haven or take in a final tour of the ‘Back of the Shop’ at J.W. D’Arcy Jewellers before they close for good. Not all the events are in Peterborough – many are in the surrounding villages; for example, you could visit Richard III’s birthplace and the scene of some of Britain’s bloodiest history – or if you prefer, enjoy a relaxing village talk and tour. Alternatively, visit some rural parish churches, all of which have something of historic or artistic interest to share. Peterborough Civic Society have long been associated with coordinating this event locally and, despite the hiatus last year, they have been collating local information on this national celebration of “all things heritage” in September. As the dates and times of opening vary from place to place, and of course, due to the previous uncertainty of initially being able to guarantee the event going ahead prior to the COVID restrictions being lifted, we were unable to produce leaflets or brochures for distribution. However, there is a wealth of information on the Heritage Open Days website – not just about events in our area, but also nationally – so please spread the word! Don’t forget the dates: September 10th-19th, 2021. Details of local events can be found by visiting www.heritageopendays.org.uk

Change: What do you think?
S
ome of us embrace changes in our lives with enthusiasm and fresh expectation whilst others may be creatures of habit.
That can apply to all walks of life, be it changing jobs, or being bold enough to try a new hairstyle, starting a new hobby, making new friends; the opportunities that arise for change are endless. We are all guilty at times of wanting to stay with what we know because it is familiar to us and we prefer to exist in our own comfort zone. Other times we do things out of habit without even giving it a second thought. Whilst taking a friend to hospital recently, using my car which is metallic grey, I parked in the same spot as always. On one occasion we used a different car and parked in an alternative space. On leaving I automatically headed towards the usual parking space expecting to see my car until my friend said: “Where are you going? We came in the red car today.” This highlighted to me that we can often be on autopilot and do what requires less effort and is
WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH familiar to us. But making changes is often the best thing we can do – it brings a new fresh perspective rather than the ‘same old, same old’ routine. I’ve noticed the nights are drawing in and the conkers are maturing on the trees which always indicates to me that as one season draws to a close the beauty of another will soon arrive. I want to encourage you to be bold and try something new. Why not come to church where you can discover for yourself how God is real today and can bring a new purpose to your life? You’d be most welcome to our Sunday service every week at 10.45am. Marija Lysak (Assistant Pastor)

The Deeper You Go, iThe Higher You Fly? For those who are ready to surrender their false ego, deep wisdom provides a basis of a sense of self that is so utterly flexible and malleable that all false limitations can be melted away.
I
rarely teach wisdom, yet it invisibly informs everything about Kissing Consciousness. So, here's the 'under the bonnet', 'glass-walled restaurant kitchen' insight into how wisdom informs the KC approach to releasing and letting go of our false self-constrictions. At a seminar, I might ask two participants to pick up a piece of A4 paper in front of them, one each. But before I do, I ask one of them to stand on their piece of paper. Then I invite them both to pick up their piece of paper without moving their feet. Now, of course, it's instantly obvious that picking up a piece of paper that you're standing on can't be done. Yet this is a metaphor for trying to release our false, conditioned blocks and self-judgements whilst we are identifying with them. I tell people that: "If you identify with something you have to be it." Yet if you aren't identified with something, and it's just an object to you, just a 'thing', you can move it around as you wish: you can change it, replace it, keep it or bin it. When you were younger, you may have been told that you are no good at (please fill in the blanks) and yet even though it may not be true, maybe you believed it anyway. It became part of your sense of self. It's because you then identified with that characteristic that it will feel difficult, almost impossible to replace, if you, for example, were trying to get rid of the negative thinking that came with that.
A logical principle called 'Subject vs Object' explains what wisdom is. In logic, a subject is defined as 'that which is aware of an object'. So, you're the subject, and the things you're aware of are objects: your phone, the table in front of you, the pen, the coffee mug... but you can also observe your body as an object. If your body is an object, then who is the 'you' who is the subject, the 'self' that is aware of the body? You can also make your thoughts and emotions – and therefore your whole personality, status, name, history and all – as an object that you are aware of. This is wisdom. It is right relationship to self! There's actually nothing left, which is good, because you're free to fulfil your true nature, free from other people's definitions of you. If you would like to receive a free ninety minute audio of me explaining this wisdom principle in more detail please visit www.kissingconsciousness.com/fly

Impact due to lack of socialising a dog at a young age
C
OVID!!! What an impact it had on everyone, whether you’ve had it, lost someone to it, or it had an incredible impact on your finances, at least we can talk about it and express our feelings freely to those around us.
But what about our canine friends, have you considered what impact it had on them? With the first lockdown we saw the price of dogs soar rapidly, due to the sudden increase in demand, with everyone being at home. Whilst on the one hand the dog, or more frequently the puppy, would have someone around all day to give it the toilet breaks it needs and the time to adjust to its new home environment, what was done about the other majorly important early stages of socialisation? Now that life is getting back to a new normal, I’m seeing more and more dogs that are having socialisation problems as a result of the lockdown impact. Puppies are most willing to approach life and its wide range of different encounters between the age of three to twelve weeks of age, so normally when we collect our puppy at eight weeks old, we still have four weeks of the ideal impressionable age to introduce new people and situations. We still must restrict certain situations until they are fully vaccinated, but car trips, meeting

people from different households, etc. are all possible with careful planning. By twelve weeks old, puppies are becoming a little more cautious over new encounters, and obviously the older the dog gets before these new exposures the harder it can be for your dog to have a wellrounded and confident manner. So, you can already recognise that many of these youngsters missed the vital early stages, when we couldn’t get out and meet other households or travel around freely in our cars, so while all is not lost, we must be prepared for harder work to get the dog as confident and sociable as we would like.
You may be asking, what is the best way to achieve the goals we have for our dog? What you’ll find is that different dog trainers will have different solutions, all of which work for them otherwise they wouldn’t use them. What I find works for me and has worked for all my clients so far is, in basic terms, to know the precise moment to praise your dog. Let me explain, dogs love attention and are very quick to learn how to get that attention, I will use a dog that I have recently asked to to en • Maximum of been 15 dogs at a time work with as an example. all dogs receive the attention they des

time he shot behind the sofa and hid. The owners did what was natural to them and picked him up to comfort him, to suggest to him that I was nothing to be afraid of. Now this all seems to be perfectly sensible, however, this dog was using that behaviour to be a cue to get attention by being picked up, thereby, rewarding him for being fearful. In order to overcome this, I asked the owners to follow some simple new methods. Whenever, someone new came into the property or near the dog, everyone was asked to ignore the dog completely. The dog now being somewhat confused as to why its normal behaviour wasn’t getting the attention it usually gets, would then start to seek attention from its owners, who again were to ignore it. Having not received attention from them, it would eventually start to gradually investigate the new person.

It’s at this point that the praise and attention needs to be given, thus rewarding the dog for the behaviour we desire. By consistently using this method, within two weeks the dog was far more accepting of most new people and a lot more settled. Using similar methods, he has overcome his issues with the harness and progress is being made on lead work, he is by no means the finished article but is improving daily. This is not the only way of overcoming certain issues, but one in my armoury that I find works well…

Teenage Kicks To celebrate the launch of our fabulous new course – TEENAGE KICKS – a six-week course specifically to guide you through this tricky stage of our young teenage dogs, we are going to offer you some tips and advice on making it through! Five signs you are now living with a teenage dog • Your dog is between 5 months and 2 years old. • Your dog is less obedient and increasingly motivated to explore, interact and run away. • It is like they are a different dog, who no longer wants to please you and instead is plotting against you. • They are suddenly barking at people, dogs or inanimate objects they've seen one hundred times before with no issue. • Nothing in your house is safe from them chewing, grabbing, running off with or tearing up. Don't worry we are here to help, read on to find out what you can do to not only survive this stage, and it is a stage, but instead thrive and enjoy it. Life with a dog is a constant roller coaster. Whether it is worrying about how to help your dog settle in, concerns over their nutrition, health matters, emotional or physical aspects, and so much more. Something to keep in the forefront of your mind though is that if you are struggling with some of their behaviours, it is very likely they are struggling too. Your dog is not plotting against you or trying to make your life harder. During this time, there are significant hormonal changes and a restructuring of the brain. Just like human teenagers, they can't resist the need to engage in doing more of everything, with the environment around them and the people in it. Life is not easy and if you think back to your own teenage years, was it a peaceful, calm, easily navigated journey? Be honest. There is a reason why the most common age for dogs being given to rescue centres to be re-
homed is between six-eighteen months old, this is because canine adolescence can be a tricky time. In humans, it lasts a number of years, in dogs, it is a matter of months, five-twenty-four to be more specific! We begin to see signs of this life stage when everyday things start to become ‘different’ like putting your dogs' collar or harness on becomes a challenge, touching your dog which used to calm them, now gets them really excited, they can no longer hear you calling them and get easily distracted by items they have seen numerous times before. Sound familiar? What you can do to thrive There are no hidden secrets. Here is everything you need to know to make the most of this time. • Scale everything back, less is so much more, focus on short ten-minute training sessions, where you include Find It games. • When you step out of your front door to go for a walk with your dog on lead only continue if your dog isn't pulling. • When out with your dog reward them EVERY time they look at you, even when you don't ask them to. • Instead of the forty-five-minute walks you've built up to, which are now a chore, go for 15 minute walks, so that the chance for misbehaving is short and instead the walk is more successful. • Whilst your dog may act like they need much less sleep, an adult dog needs a minimum of fourteen hours’ sleep in a twenty-four-hour period! • Licking, chewing and sniffing can aid sleep. • White noise is your friend; most smart devices or YouTube will provide the static which will help your dog sleep through the night. Put it on when they are resting in the evening, at a low volume and leave it on to help them sleep through. At Glyn Jones Auctions we put our clients and their families first Unlike other auction houses we do not operate to profit from your belongings. We understand the difficulties and stress that can occur from having to clear a house, whether the reason for clearance is a bereavement or a downsizing. We offer a transparent service that ensures clients receive the most for their items. To demonstrate how our house clearance service works, here is our step-by-step guide of the whole process: STEP 1: We assess the property and will quote for the removal of all items. STEP 2: Once removed from the property, all items are still owned by you. We act as your agents and never take ownership over your goods. The items that are unfit for auction will be recycled or donated to local charity shops. STEP 3: All items fit for auction will be sold by us on behalf of you. All the money generated by the sale of these items is then given back to you, with just the inclusion of a service charge.

Finance
Interest and Inflation By Eamonn Dorling
I
read something the other day that said the eight most wealthy individuals worldwide have as much combined wealth as the lowest fifty percent of the world’s population. I wonder what their take on inflation and interest rates is. They probably couldn’t care less!
On the other hand, most of us struggle if prices rise quickly when our income fails to keep pace. The good news is that most commentators are not predicting any significant increases in inflation. Consequently, the Bank of England (BOE) is unlikely to increase its base rate from the 0.1 percent last amended on March 19th, 2020. However, there is no guarantee of this because the BOE meets monthly to discuss doing so. The low central interest rate is the main reason why the interest paid on your cash deposits in banks and building society accounts remain stubbornly low. There are some higher rates, but often they have terms and conditions that can be restrictive or could tie your money up beyond the time that more freely available attractive rates become available. I have seen some rates that appear to be a cash deposit that is a very much riskier investment – if it seems too good to be true – it usually is! Alternatives Suppose you are leaving significant funds that attract growth below the rate of inflation results in a reduction in purchasing power. For example, if inflation is 2.5% and the interest on your cash is 0.1%, you see a decrease in absolute value by 2.4% over a year.
Some investments have provided much higher returns in recent months over the medium to long term, even though the world has suffered from a COVID pandemic! It would be best to realise that investments can go down and up and that they should be invested for the medium to long term. There could be tax implications. Therefore, independent financial advice is a sensible precaution. Even the taxman can help boost retirement plans better than a cash deposit if you let him. RESIDENTS FIGHT INCINERATOR PLANS By Steve Barclay MP
T
he enormous incinerator proposed in Wisbech is completely unsuitable and I continue to lead opposition to it. During the formal public consultation period this summer I have met many residents and local businesses who are strongly against the scheme. It’s a completely unsuitable development, as I told the developer at one of their public consultation events at the Rosmini Centre. I handed over a local petition with more than seventy-seven pages and more than three thousand signatures and since then even more people have signed up at www.stopfenlandincinerator.co.uk. I’d like to thank the many residents who came out to register their opposition and I will continue to fight for constituents against this flawed proposal. By the time you read this, back-to-school will be in full swing, as I know first-hand from my own primary school children. But as the nights slowly start to draw in, I wanted to encourage those, particularly younger constituents, who have not yet been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to sign up to protect themselves and those they care about. So if you haven’t had your vaccination, please book it now at www.nhs.uk/covidvaccine. TRANSFORMATION Before the summer break I was delighted to visit both Cromwell Community College in Chatteris and Neale-Wade Academy in March. Cromwell Community College’s £14 million transformation to become the first all-through school in Cambridgeshire is impressive. Executive Headteacher Jane Horn told me about the progress of the college and we had a look at the new buildings, including an additional twelve secondary teaching classrooms as well as science labs, sports pitches and play areas. At Neale-Wade Academy, I was taken on a tour by senior prefects and it was great to have
such an engaged and engaging group with a positive mix of challenge and constructive suggestions. It was also good to hear from Principal, Graham Horn about the excellent work staff in Neale-Wade, as indeed staff across schools in our constituency, have been doing to continue teaching amidst the challenges of the pandemic. Skills training and apprenticeships are more important than ever as we recover from the pandemic and level up across the country, so it was great to join a key stage in the £3.16 million building work at Stainless Metalcraft in Chatteris with the formal sod cutting. Commercial Director, Martin Martin Lawrence and the whole team at Metalcraft have done an amazing job in developing apprenticeships over many years. The new facility is due to be completed by Spring 2022 and will provide between eighty and 130 apprentices each year. IVF TREATMENT Finally, it’s welcome news that NHS-funded IVF treatment has been reinstated in Cambridgeshire. The Clinical Commissioning Group, which funds NHS service in the constituency, has agreed to fund a cycle of IVF treatment with up to three implantations of embryos, giving people up to three chances of getting pregnant. It was also interesting to hear from the CCG about their GP workforce strategy to ensure GPs come to work in all parts of the county, the boosting of non-GP roles, and some of the local and national initiatives being employed, including to support newly qualified GPs, encourage flexibility and new ways of working, grow the number of GP partners, and engage the next generation of leaders in primary care. The Government is funding five new medical schools to increase the number of doctors, including a new medical school in Lincoln, and it is key that these new doctors cover rural areas like our own.

DIRECTORY BUSINESS FEATURE OF THE MONTH:
C
A P APPLIANCE CARE: PUT YOUR ‘WHITE GOODS’ INTO ANDY’S SAFE HANDS
rowland’s Andy Schofield confirms the opinion that you’re never too old to start a new business.
This sixty-two-year-old domestic appliance engineer has decided to step back from full-time employment, which has seen him recently complete almost twenty years with BSH Home Appliances. Domestic circumstances and a re-appraisal of his work/ life balance has meant that the expertise and valuable experience Andy gained on the Bosch-NEFF-Siemens range of products can now be channelled into his new domestic appliances servicing and repairs business.
Andy, trading as AP Appliance Care, will be offering assistance to domestic owners of all makes and types of ‘white goods’, but Andy’s specialisms in built-in ovens and coffee machines would single him out as the ‘go-to guy’ for anyone with the Bosch and NEFF ‘slide and hide’ type of built-in oven, or the larger, built-in coffee machines such as Gaggenau, from the German manufacturer of highend domestic appliances. The time spent with the prestigious BSH company and Andy’s regular calls on customers
