timely reminder that “Stoptober” is now upon us, a movement that has already driven over one million ‘quit smoking attempts’ to date and is the biggest mass quit attempt in the country. It is based on research that shows that if you can stop smoking for twenty-eight days, you are five times more likely to stay smoke-free for good.
Cover Art: Eloise Harwood, our Seaside Hunt Winner, created this beautiful picture with her new watercolour pencils! (see p4)

Inside Highlights
With the money you’ve saved then treat yourselves to a Christmas to remember – less than a hundred days from now! But before then, don’t forget to stock up for when those “Trick or Treaters” pay you a visit on Hallowe’en. Finally, don’t forget to change your clocks (“Spring forward, Fall back”), as we lose the hour on Hallowe’en itself, Sunday October 31st.

The expression ‘Time and tide wait for no man’ came to me the other day… I had left the Fens to visit a business show at Birmingham’s NEC, something that I normally do on a regular basis, but suddenly realised I hadn’t done so since pre-COVID. Looking at my work diary I discovered that my last visit was in fact in January last year and I suddenly started thinking about how much had changed in our daily lives since then and also how quickly those months had passed by. October sees Hallowe’en, after which unfortunately comes my birthday in November and on to Christmas and another New Year, but it only seems like yesterday since the same period last year. Let’s all pray that we are now over the worst of the pandemic and the resulting restrictions as I for one plan to try and make every day of freedom count over the coming weeks and get out and about as much as possible… and I suggest you do too!

KELLY CELEBRATES NOVEL SUCCESS Whittlesey author Kelly Worby is celebrating the worldwide success of her debut novel. Meet Me in the Treehouse, was written during the 2020 lockdown and published on Amazon under the pen name Kelly Tink. Kelly said: “I only set out with the goal of selling one hundred books, but it will be the one-year anniversary since publication on November 12th and I've hit 1593 sales/downloads in eleven countries. “I've been in the top one hundred free kindle book charts in five countries and the top one hundred paid kindle book charts in Brazil.”
REMEMBERING LOVED ONES A service to remember loved ones will be held at St Mary's Church, Whittlesey on Sunday, November 7th at 3pm. This has been an annual service for the bereaved and is held on the first Sunday in November (although COVID-19 restrictions prevented this being held in 2020) to remember loved ones. The Church of England Ministry Team for Whittlesey says that over the last eighteen months it has been very difficult to celebrate the loss of a loved one, whether a relative or close friend, so they have decided to hold this service. All those who have suffered a loss at any time will be welcome to attend. The service will include three hymns, a Bible reading and a short talk. During the service everyone is invited to come forward to light a candle(s) in memory of their departed loved ones and this will be followed by a time of quiet personal reflection. It is hoped to include a time of fellowship at the end of the service when gatherers can enjoy a chat, cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake. 4

Hallam Travel: Taking you places since the 1990s By Lorraine Hallam
W
e have been organising days out since the early 1990s when the children were small, starting with ‘Disney on Ice’, so that they could share the experience with their extended family and friends, gradually adding other ones for them to enjoy, such as Legoland, Woburn Safari Park, and Cadbury World. On taking over the local Girls’ Brigade company in 1994 we turned these ideas into fundraising events for the Girls’ Brigade, opening them up to the local community. I resigned from The Girls’ Brigade in 2005, but people within the local community still wanted us to organise days out for them, so in 2006 we started building it up to what it is today and are now trading as Hallam Travel. Some good reasons why you should choose Hallam Travel: Only one pick up/drop off You don’t have to ride around the countryside for hours picking up other passengers before you get anywhere. There is a free car park at our Long Sutton departure. At the Spalding departure the maximum cost for parking will be £3 per day. Modern coaches We always use modern executive coaches. Each coach has reclining seats, toilet and seatbelts, which must now, by law, be worn, and air conditioning. Comfort breaks We have regular comfort and refreshment stops on all journeys taking over two hours. Friendly and helpful staff The key to the success of your day out is dependent upon the skills and knowledge of your driver and courier. We believe, at Hallam Travel, that the driver is there to drive the coach. Each coach will have its own courier, usually myself, so that we are able to give you our immediate attention without distracting the driver. We look forward to helping you make new memories. To book your next trip, please contact: Hallam Travel, PO Box 52, Holbeach PE12 2AX. Tel: 01406 493198; Email: lorraine@hallamtravel.co.uk

What’s Really Possible for Your Experience of Having a Physical Body? The Kissing Consciousness approach to what we call 'Body Wisdom' starts with listening to the body. This was taught to me in 2002 by David Heard, founder of the National Rehabilitation Centre for the Paralysed, and trainer of elite athletes such as England cricket captain Andy Strauss.
IN
this you're paying attention to your body the way a mechanic would listen to the feedback of a car. You're reading the runes of your own body, you're getting a feel for it, you're listening to the information being provided and noticing the signals coming from it. Feedback from the body which is ignored can become a niggle, which if ignored can become a symptom, which if ignored further still can become a disease. Too much of commercial healthcare addresses the symptom instead of the cause. Here are my top three tips to liberate your bodily experience. 1) 'No pain, no gain' is a no-no. As Heard explains, pain is the body's signal that something is wrong, so ‘No pain, no gain’ was always going to be a dodgy premise. 2) Rate of Perceived Exertion. Instead of comparing ourselves to other people, what we ought to be doing is exercising within our own personal sweet spot - not so easy that it doesn't engage us, and not so hard that it puts us off or discourages us. Our rate of perceived exertion is entirely personal to us. You can assess this on a scale of one to ten, with one
being very light, no strain at all, and ten being far too heavy such that you can't lift it - or equivalents for other activity types. 3) Needs of the Mind and Body. As Don Miguel Ruiz explains, the needs of the mind are not the same as the needs of the body. If the need for food or drink or sex is in the mind it can never be satisfied with food or drink or sex. So, we have to make a distinction and separate things into two piles: these are the needs of the body, and these are the needs of the mind. By listening to the body, rejecting the irresponsibility of 'No pain, no gain', working within our own chosen rates of exertion, and liberating our bodily experience from the insatiable needs of the tyrant mind, we can ensure that our physical activity is always enjoyable, nurturing and something we desire. This heals the false relationship to our bodies we are conditioned into whereby exercise is something that we attempt to graft onto our lives, which we all know is an approach that never works or lasts. If you'd like further help with this, please do email me at the address below.

Semi-permanent make-up Semi-permanent make-up is a quick and easy procedure that is practically painless and which can give you a perfectly natural, made-up look, without spending hours in front of the mirror every day. Sometimes referred to as micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing, semi-permanent make-up is a treatment that works by injecting tiny amounts of pigment into the superficial layers of your skin, using a fine vibrating needle. The Certainty Of A Promise
WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH
t the time of writing this article we were experiencing the delights of some late sunshine, but there is no doubt about it, autumn is upon us.
Secondly, we are pleased to announce that, as promised, our popular ‘Pastime’ Coffee Morning has restarted, every Wednesday from 10am– 12noon at the church, 23 Broad Street. Maybe you’ve been feeling isolated and lonely during the pandemic? Then this is an ideal opportunity to make new friends and catch up with those you haven’t seen in a while. Come and enjoy free tea, coffee and cake in a relaxing, welcoming environment. We want to reassure you that we continue to take all necessary precautions to keep as safe from COVID as possible.
A
The blanket of warm tones as the leaves change on the trees is an awesome sight to behold and is rapidly replacing the bright coloured carpet of flowers we’ve enjoyed during the summer months. I personally love the transition from one season to the next but I understand that not everyone feels the same. If the thought of shorter days and cold weather fills you with dread then we have some exciting news for you. Here are two promises that absolutely won’t be broken: Firstly, even though the seasons change, God’s promises remain certain. Know that you are precious to him and he cares for your every need. So often we can be left disappointed when a person doesn’t fulfil a promise, even if it wasn’t done deliberately. The Bible says in Isaiah 40 v8; The grass withers and the flowers fall but the word of our God stands for ever. Be encouraged in the knowledge that God’s promises will never let you down.
We look forward to seeing you on Wednesdays, or Sundays at our 10.45am service or both. At Glyn Jones Auctions we put our clients and their families first Unlike other auction houses we do not operate to profit from your belongings. We understand the difficulties and stress that can occur from having to clear a house, whether the reason for clearance is a bereavement or a downsizing. We offer a transparent service that ensures clients receive the most for their items. To demonstrate how our house clearance service works, here is our step-by-step guide of the whole process: STEP 1: We assess the property and will quote for the removal of all items. STEP 2: Once removed from the property, all items are still owned by you. We act as your agents and never take ownership over your goods. The items that are unfit for auction will be recycled or donated to local charity shops. STEP 3: All items fit for auction will be sold by us on behalf of you. All the money generated by the sale of these items is then given back to you, with just the inclusion of a service charge.

Equity Release:
The Myths and The Misconceptions! The most common feedback about equity release often prompts an angry retort, citing it as a con, a scam and a rip off. Social media is littered with comments about companies involved in it as thieves, and that you will lose your home.
T
he actual truth is a far cry from these unfounded comments. Indeed, in the past they were products called Home Income Plans and Shared Appreciation Mortgages that were not fully regulated and generally it is from bad experiences with these now nonexistent products that generally you will find the basis for the negativity towards equity release Today, modern equity release centres around a product called a Lifetime Mortgage. A fully regulated product, under the Financial Conduct Authority, it offers clients over the age of fifty-five who own their home a flexible way to access their property wealth through a cash-free lump sum or a combination of a lump sum and a drawdown facility. You remain the owner of your home and the lifetime mortgage is a first legal charge on the property, just in the same way as a traditional mortgage.
this offsets the impact on the erosion of equity in a property. My clients initially are concerned that there will not be any equity left in their property and are surprised when they find that with the current interest rates, the amount borrowed will only double in about twenty years! So, if you have heard that the amount doubles every seven years, you are being misled by outdated and inaccurate information. Retirement lending does require expert financial advice as a lifetime mortgage may not be the right solution for you. I would encourage you to book an appointment with me, and I can provide you the facts you need to make an informed decision. I live locally, and on hand to provide my clients the support and financial advice they need to meet their retirement objectives. Please give me a call anytime for a chat! 07453 084137 or email: nick.lovell@cfsequityrelease.co.uk
Nick holds the London Institute of Banking and Finance qualifications to advise on mortgages and equity release. CFS Equity Release is a member of the Equity Release Council.
Interest rates have been at an historically low level and whilst we are seeing some small rate rises, it is still possible to obtain rates below three percent. The interest rate is also fixed, so there is no danger that you will be back to a standard variable rate and suffer a hike in interest in later years. A lifetime mortgage requires no contracted repayment. Interest will roll up and compound and the amount borrowed will increase. However, it is often overlooked that property prices continue to increase year-on-year and YOU NEED TO TAKE LEGAL ADVICE BEFORE RELEASING EQUITY FROM YOUR HOME AS LIFETIME MORTGAGES AND HOME REVERSION PLANS ARE NOT RIGHT FOR EVERYONE.

A TRIBUTE TO
Joan Diana Kefford
By her cousin Jean Hannaford and her friend, Pearl Beeby
J
oan was a gentle, Christian person with a deep faith, which she lived by all her life. She was the only child of Reginald and Lilian Kefford, of Broad Street, Whittlesey. Her father was a builder in a wellknown local family firm with his brother Leslie. Her mother was a very accomplished piano teacher. Joan inherited her mother's musical abilities and when she left March High School, she attended the Royal School of Music in London where she gained excellent qualifications before going on to teach music at Wellingborough High School, and later at her old school, March High School, which then became part of the Neale-Wade. Her Christian faith and her deep love of music stayed with her all her life and she played the organ at St Andrew’s Church, Whittlesey for more than fifty years. There would not be many couples who were married in St Andrew's who did not have Joan as their organist. As well as her music, Joan was also a keen tennis player and a Girl Guide, acting as Tawny Owl to the pack of Brownies which met in St Mary's Parish Room. She also acted in many church plays performed at St Andrew's at Easter and at Christmas time. She looked after her parents, especially her father after he lost his sight. After finally retiring from teaching, she joined the Peterborough Fine Arts Society, now called the Arts Society. Some of the members still remember her with affection. Joan enjoyed her garden and her greenhouse, as well as her baking. She was looking forward to making a birthday cake for her 85th birthday when she had the fall which ultimately led to her moving into The Elms Nursing Home, where she lived for four years before she died on July 19th, 2021. Joan will be sadly missed by all who knew her, and by those who had the privilege of benefiting from her outstanding musical abilities and skills.

READY FOR HALLOWE’EN ON
OCTOBER 31ST? WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT THEN?
H
allowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st. The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows’ Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses” and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”. Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced “sah-win”). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en.
Masks and costumes were worn in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or appease them. “Trick-or-treating” is an activity for children on or around Hallowe’en, in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, “Trick or treat?” The “trick” part of “trick or treat” is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property, if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Hallowe’en. It has become socially expected that if you live in a neighbourhood with children, you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

LADYSMITH WI CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF A DANCE LEGEND The life of dancing legend Peggy Spencer is the topic at the October meeting of Whittlesey Ladysmith WI, with a talk by her niece, Sue Jakeman.
Recycling crew members
PUPILS THANK FENLAND’S REFUSE AND CLEANSING TEAMS School pupils have paid a heartfelt thank you to Fenland’s refuse, recycling and street cleansing teams for their incredible efforts throughout the coronavirus pandemic. They sent 53 letters to the frontline teams, thanking the ‘unsung heroes’ for helping keep their homes and streets clean and safe throughout a challenging eighteen months. The letters have now been put on display on a wall at the teams’ headquarters, bringing a smile to crews every day. Teacher Peter Ingham, of Whittlesey’s Park Lane Primary School, said: “At Park Lane Primary School, we have been thinking about the past eighteen months and all the people within our local community that we have to be thankful for. We realised that if refuse collectors and street cleaners hadn’t continued working throughout this pandemic, often in extremely difficult situations, then our streets would become messy and other more worrying situations would have occurred.” The teams have worked non-stop throughout all the lockdowns and restrictions, ensuring significantly increased volumes of waste and recycling has been collected on time and streets have been kept clean and tidy, despite staff shortages due to self-isolation. Cllr Peter Murphy, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “Bin collections are one of our most vital services, provided to over 45,000 households across Fenland. Ensuring that all bin collections are maintained throughout the pandemic has been no easy task, but thanks to Herculean efforts and dedication of our refuse and recycling crews it has been possible. We can all be very proud of the work these teams do for our district.” 24

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR As the year progresses and COVID restrictions are gradually lifted I am delighted that communities everywhere are beginning to return to some form of normality. This has also given myself and the Mayoress the opportunity of fulfilling a few more of our responsibilities in promoting the town and villages and to join in their respective celebrations. At the time of writing, I am looking forward to the honour of opening the long-awaited Coates Fete which originally took place in May each year but has not taken place for a number of years. This event, although held in September this year, hopefully will return to its original May slot next year. My thanks go to the hard-working village committee who with financial support from Whittlesey Town Council have been able to revive this village celebration. Equally my congratulations and thanks go to Robert Windle who this year with the backing of his committee has organised the Whittlesey Big Bash which will take place on the Sunday usually reserved for the Whittlesey Festival. This event will also be opened by myself in company with the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, Mrs Caroline Bewes DL. On the same day a service at the War Memorial will celebrate the centenary of the local branch of The Royal British Legion attended by Stephen Barclay MP, High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and myself in company with Cllr Alex Miscandlon, Chairman of Fenland District Council and his wife Pat. I sincerely hope that as you read this article the above events have passed without incident or weather interruption. My wife, Ann, and I have recently promoted our town at the High Sheriff's Garden Party at Little Shelford, Rushden Town Council Proms in the Park and at a Civic Open Day at United States Force at Alconbury.
The final music festival of the summer has taken place on the Buttercross in gorgeous weather and I know by personally being amongst the stewards how popular these festivals have become. My thanks go to the chief organiser, Cllr Ray Whitwell and his team of councillors and community volunteers who have given up their time to make these events a success. Also, for the sponsorship of Whittlesey Town Council, McCains, Jones Bros and Boons Transport. It is the intention that these events will return next summer. Finally, it was a great pleasure for Ann and I to present the Whittlesey Citizen of the Year Award at a ceremony held in the Remembrance Gardens in Station Road to Robert Boddington for his involvement in many local community groups and in particular for his work with Street Pride and the upkeep of the War Memorial at Eastrea. It was an equal pleasure to also present the Whittlesey Young Citizen Award at the same ceremony to Joseph Thompson for his work in promoting Autism Awareness amongst his peers at Sir Harry Smith Community College and for raising in excess of £800 towards the cause. My hearty congratulations to both winners. Until next time... Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council
COATES FETE SUCCESS The Coates Fete was a big success with owner Ella Stanier and her rescue dog Toby, who was brought to the UK from Romania, taking the best of show award. Consumer Advice Gardeners: Can you Help Meet Demand for Vulnerable Customers? By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Autumn means many jobs still to be done in the garden, from tidying perennials, laying new lawns, and planting shrubs, to planting spring flowering bulbs and composting fallen leaves. However, if you are physically unable or not confident enough to carry out the jobs yourself, this is where our Safe Local Trades tried-and-tested members bring their expertise to their many customers. As well as our work with the trades, much effort is placed on safeguarding the more vulnerable people in our communities by working personally and directly with other caring and concerned parties in the local community, such as Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Age UK, The Bobby Scheme, Disability Peterborough, Care Network, CAPASP (Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Against Scams Partnership) and many more. Amid fears that vulnerable residents could fall foul of green-fingered scammers, our partners rely on Peterborough-based Safe Local Trades for recommendations they can pass to their clients. Trusting our register since 2008, Safe Local Trades is the only local register where all members are stringently vetted, criminal record-checked and monitored. Our members can deliver a professional service while understanding the clients’ needs and concerns, giving care and attention to pruning plants and shrubs. We are desperately frustrated and saddened that we don’t have enough gardeners to cope with the garden maintenance requests – we want to do everything that we can to help our partners and customers. Year on year, we continue to see the demand for this service increase. So, if you offer garden maintenance services and would like to consider joining Safe Local Trades alongside our existing members, we would love to hear from you – please visit www.safelocaltrades.com/become-a-member. Or perhaps you have a passion for plants and love gardening, have a sound horticultural knowledge and are thinking of setting up your own business, just like member Helen Yeeles (testimonial at www.safelocaltrades.com/traders/testimonials) who quickly filled up her order books after starting her own business.

October Gardening Tips
ith autumn, comes the endless sea of leaves that provide a fantastic, free improver for the soil, in the form of leaf mould. Although not providing as many nutrients to the soil as garden compost, leaf mould can add to soil structure and increase the ability of the soil to retain water. This way, it provides a good habitat for soil life such as beneficial bacteria and earthworms. Leaf mould is also excellent when used in containers because of its ability to retain water. An easy way to make leaf mould: • punch a few holes in the side of a black plastic bag, • rake leaves or use a leaf vacuum, which chops the leaves, • when full sprinkle with water, shake and tie, • the following autumn they can be used as a mulch or in two years can be used as a soil conditioner. It is a busy month on the vegetable plot, clearing it of plant debris, composting and preparing for the cold months ahead. Potatoes and beetroot should all be harvested now; although carrots can be left in the ground it is probably advisable to lift them. October is perfect for dividing large, oversized crowns of rhubarb: if established plants are left indefinitely, they do eventually produce less each year. Cut up and divide the crowns into good sized pieces, making sure each has signs of dormant buds and as it is not a fussy plant can be planted almost anywhere: so long as the ground

does not get waterlogged. It is also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees. Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil. Crops that can be sown this month are: • Early broad beans. • Japanese over-wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring. • Last chance to transplant spring cabbages – be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves. • Plant garlic. Other jobs for this month include: • Continue to earth up celery and leeks. • Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd. • Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries. • Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas –leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould. • If you have not already done so, earth up, or stake (or both) Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants. • Pick the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana – this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening. • Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins, and they will keep for longer. • Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost. • Remove runner bean canes: if left in the ground they will easily rot. Happy gardening!

So, You Need a Rewire?
R
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
ewiring your home is not usually something that can be avoided; it is only when the installation in your home needs replacing.
To prepare you … you are likely to have holes in your walls that will need plastering. Unless you are having the installation surface mounted in trunking, or the walls of the building are hollow, there is going to be damage. We always minimise it as much as we can, and can arrange for the walls to be plastered for you if you wish.
Tips to make the rewire as painless as possible
1
Warn the neighbours. Nobody likes conflict, but there is the potential for it, especially if they are shift workers. But most people are happy to live with the noise, providing they know it is happening, and for how long. Alto Electrical have a letter template that you can have, to send to your neighbours that will warn them that the work is going to be carried out, how long it will last, and it will provide them with our contact details in case they need to discuss anything, such as where we are parked. Alternatively, we are happy to send that letter ourselves.
to keep providing power overnight.
3
Don’t go too far! When we are working on your home, often there may be decisions we need you to make. For example, we can’t access a certain area, so we would check with you if it is ok to go via another route. Sometimes, we need to ask questions, like, if we can’t find your stop cock to bond it, we may ask you if you know where it is. You may know that the kitchen used to be in a different room which we could then look in.
4 5
Put things away. Alto Electrical always cover things up when we are carrying out any dusty electrical work, but there is a lot of dust created in the process. So, even with everything covered up, it is impossible to remove all the dust sheets without disturbing it. Book the other trades in. If we’re not arranging the plasterers and decorators, get them booked in (leaving a little buffer). The quicker the plastering and decorating is done, the quicker the dust will go away. You don’t want to be waiting weeks or months before you can get all the dust out of the air. If you think you need a rewire, please get in touch and we can help to advise you.
2
Move out. I often ask my customers to move out when they are having a rewire. Not only are you going to avoid the worst of the dust, but we will be able to get finished much quicker if we’re not having to rewire circuits in stages. It also considerably reduces the cost as we can just press on with the work, instead of needing

OLLIE WINS Writing Challenge...
T
welve-year-old Ollie Foster is the winner of the Fenland Youth Radio Writing Challenge sponsored by Author James Nicol and supported by Kelly Vision and Discovering Magazines.
Ollie, now of Sir Harry Smith Community College, Whittlesey, but formerly of Coates Primary School, won the competition ahead of joint second placed Nadia Sharpstone, also now of Sir Harry Smith Community College and formerly of Coates Primary School, and Elliemai Faulkner, of Whittlesey’s Park Lane School.
OLLIE’S STORY Zac was a kind, tranquil boy who had a joyful life. well until the school bully Don appeared. He had mucky brown hair and a disgusting mole placed on his cheek. Don always scowled at his dreary prey, before hauling them into a reeking bin full of pongy items. Zac was one of those unlucky people to experience facing him, and that hideous empire of rubbish bags. That poor boy put up with him at school, at the park and even at home, all the time, fruits splatted on the window which were lurking with tomato and orange gunk. Zac was ready for a gleeful day, without a bully. He sauntered to the wooden wardrobe, picking out a striped T-shirt and snug jeans. Then he chose his favourite item of all, multi coloured comfy trainers that he can run incredibly fast in, no matter what comes his way. With excitement he swung the front door open and bolted to the park in no time. His friends were on the swings, laughing at each other’s jokes. Suddenly, a dark shadow loomed over him. It was Don. Zac was ready for this, when Don

chuckled with his deep voice, he dashed past the bin of one thousand smells, (people who Don hated the most get chucked in there) and scattered into a claustrophobic alleyway. The bully was on his tail, like a lion hunting its prey. After an intense chase through the streets, back gardens, and even more alleyways. Zac could see home in sight, the red door opened, with a figure holding cascades of shopping. Zac’s mum was here to save the day! Immediately Don turned the other way like he was innocent. That was close! Out of breath, Zac walked over to the piles of shopping barricading the entrance to a minute tiny home. Carefully, he stepped over bags full of goods, gorging with vegetables and drinks. Zac decided to tell his mum about everything when he approached her. The bin, getting chased and most importantly, the gunk of fruits on the window. She was flabbergasted at every single detail Zac had to say. With a bit of sadness, she unpacked the shopping into the fridge and cupboards, still overloading with food. Zac’s mum loved to shop all the time. After loading the items, she reluctantly headed to the park. Going through the winding pathways, a memory flashed back to Zac’s mind. He was cornered by the bully, tears flowing like a river down his eyes. Zac could not do anything as Don was bigger and stronger and scarier. That was the worst day of his life. Don will regret that. Soon he entered the park full of no-one apart from an alone giant. The mum went over to Don and distant shouts could be heard from miles away. The next day, no mean looking horrid kid went near him at all, so it was happily ever after for everyone (apart from Don).

NATURE SITES CAN HELP PEOPLE’S MENTAL HEALTH By Steve Barclay MP
T
here are pockets of the constituency which are often great to visit but which many people have not yet discovered, and one such is Gault Wood in March.
Located near March Golf Club, a team of volunteers transformed what was a wheat field in 1994 to now a sixteen-acre wood with ten thousand trees. It was great to visit again and tour the site with members of the Woodland Trust and local volunteers to hear about how nature sites can help with people's mental health and wellbeing, and the value of planting more trees as part of the planning process. I am keen to see sites like this expanded and am working to promote more nature sites with public access, given the wider health benefits this offers. Six years ago, Wisbech Tennis Club had only four grass courts, which were often unplayable due to the weather, with no floodlights and a chemical toilet. So, the official opening of the two new hard courts at Wisbech Tennis Club marked a remarkable transformation for a club that now boasts two clay courts, floodlights, a children’s court and clubhouse. It’s a huge tribute to the hard work and dedication of Sue Beel, Jane Page, Wendy Cropp, Sue Pitcher and all the members that have put in a massive amount of work to bring this to fruition. I’m delighted that flood defence projects in our constituency will benefit from almost £6.5million of investment over the next year, which builds on the ongoing work from my flooding summit meeting earlier this year which sought to prioritise schemes in our area. The Government is investing £5.2 billion in flood and coastal defences over the next six years to better protect 336,000 properties.
About one thousand schemes in England are targeted during the first year – including eight in North East Cambridgeshire. They are: Needham & Laddus Culvert Replacement £230,000; Ouse Washes Reservoir Section 10 Works £5,138,272; Hostmoor Avenue Watercourse Flood Alleviation Scheme in March £28,839; Tydd St Giles Pipe Lining £25,000; Mouth Lane Pumping Station Refurbishment £85,000; works arising from the Littleport and Downham Integrated Drainage Board Strategy £20,000; Middle Level Commissioners Bank Raising Scheme £900,000; and River Delph Improvements £60,000. Residents who have suffered from flooding know how traumatising it can be and this investment is very welcome to ensure we maintain a focus on this issue. DEFRA is also due to set out further action to improve the access and availability of flood insurance for those at risk. I will continue to work with local stakeholders including our drainage boards, Cambridgeshire County Council, Fenland and East Cambs District Councils and Anglian Water to highlight the need for further action locally to support those homes most affected. While the public consultation on the Wisbech incinerator proposal is over, my campaigning hasn’t stopped. I have met with local business leaders and was joined by the Mayor of Wisbech, Councillor Andrew Lynn, putting up posters across the town alongside the leaflets that went out. I commissioned an expert report in response to the developer’s consultation. The report identifies multiple flaws with the consultation, inaccurate and misleading information presented by the developer, and adverse effects from the scheme which are not accurately reflected in the developer’s consultation documentation. It is damning. I will continue to do all I can to lead opposition to this flawed proposal.

NEW PLAY SET FOR KEY THEATRE
E
astern Angles will bring brand new theatre to local audiences with Our White Skoda Octavia being performed at Peterborough’s Key Theatre on November 5th and 6th as part of a month-long tour.
Written by Shamser Sinha, this moving play shines a light on the struggles of contemporary life as one family juggles bills, dreams and taxi-driving schemes. It’s said it was inspired by conversations with taxidrivers and residents of Peterborough and Ipswich held in 2018 as part of an Arts Council funded research project. Set in a small town in the East of England, just before the credit crunch of 2007, Amjad decides to take up taxi-driving. His days take on the rhythm of a drum. But when money is tight and Rabia’s stifled ambitions hang heavy in the air, even the songs of John Denver or the scent of a Chitral rose are not enough to mend the cracks. Shamser Sinha said: “Part of who we are is in other people, and part of us is in them. No more so than
with families and the places they live. I guess that was my inspiration.” Spanning over a decade, Our White Skoda Octavia follows the Afridi family as they try to remain optimistic in the face of relationship troubles, health difficulties and financial worries. An atmospheric tabla drumscape accompanies them through to their story’s bittersweet conclusion. Creative producer Karen Goddard added: “It’s been really fascinating to see how the story has evolved to include so many aspects of family life, it has a real mix of humour and poignancy in it which I hope people will enjoy.” To find out more and book your tickets visit www.easternangles.co.uk

New World Economy By Eamonn Dorling
T
he job market rebound is not yet a national phenomenon, but there are signs of UK wage inflation and worker shortages. Many have heard about driver shortages, but will that change as the economy changes in the medium to long term?
Lifestyle changes have brought benefits to sports and recreational equipment suppliers, and zero-carbon transport continues to grow. The UK was renowned for car production (and sometimes low-quality products); however, according to The Guardian, car production in the UK is now at its lowest level in sixty-five years. This is in light of an intentional and expected drop in demand for the internal combustion engine as we change to zero-emission cars and vans by 2040 (HM Government Industrial Strategy 2018). This has been amended to 2030 or 2035 for a hybrid. But if the UK doesn’t make them – will they be imported? There is a supporting component industry to consider. Then there is the rest of the Green Economy that is developing. Maybe some re-training for some and education for school leavers. Certainly, some traditional workplaces will need to change. What does this mean in Cambridgeshire? Cambridge has a considerable opportunity involving universities, the high tech industry, electronics, science, and the green economy. Peterborough is building a new university to serve local needs and people from further afield. We have renowned engineering capability and logistical expertise. There
are also opportunities with entrepreneurs and highly skilled management for those striving for careers in those areas. We, in the Fens, are blessed with an agricultural area featuring fertile land and great farming traditions. Rail, road and infrastructure are evolving to support sustainable businesses. The land is relatively cheap. Therefore we provide housing opportunities for other areas. We will all need to adapt, but this is an excellent place to live and to work from. The middle of your case study needs to look at what you did for the client and how your service or product resolved these pains. The case study then ends with a testimonial from the client about how the service or product has helped them. There is no cost for a case study as you are speaking to an existing happy client. The case study will then show other potential clients how you help resolve the pain point they have too. hittlesey Manor Dolphins Swimming Club has been meeting at the Whittlesey Leisure pool since the 1970s to help teach and coach the children of Whittlesey and the surrounding area. The club had lots of plans to celebrate its fiftieth year in 2020 but due to the pandemic was unable to celebrate this milestone in the way it planned to. Run by a team of dedicated volunteers, the club offers a fun social environment to the local community. Many of the current volunteers became involved in the club when their own children were members and stayed on to the help run it after their children had grown up. Phil Smith, the chair of the club, said that many of the existing members of the club are children and grandchildren of previous members: “It’s great to see that the club has helped several generations of local families to learn to swim and improve their swimming technique as well as provide a great social environment to help children improve their confidence and expand their circle of friends. We have also had several of our members progress to become swimming teachers and coaches themselves.” The club has helped many members with the experience and skills needed to participate in schemes such at the Duke of Edinburgh Awards or swimming experience towards school exam qualifications and Scout and Guide badges. A sponsored swim is held each year to help raise funds as well as a yearly gala evening. This is followed by a presentation evening to celebrate the achievements of its members.
Why swimming skills are so important Swimming is lots of fun for people of all ages and children especially love getting in the water and enjoying themselves. 56
D I S C O V E R I N G

But it is not just fun; swimming also provides loads of health benefits which can help build confidence and keep children healthy and happy at the same time. It also opens up the door to a range of other activities that children may wish to try including canoeing, snorkelling, scuba diving and triathlon. And obviously the most important one – it could save your life!
Volunteers Needed If swimming is something that you are interested in and you would like to train as a swimming coach/ teacher then the Manor Dolphins is an ideal way to get involved with a local club and progress through the necessary courses. It provides financial support for all of its volunteers to ensure they have the opportunity to keep their skills up to date.
Want to Join the Club? Meeting every Monday during term time, the club offers two sessions, 6.30pm to 7.30pm coaching lesser qualified swimmers and 7.30pm to 8.30pm for more advanced swimmers. Due to recent changes in the way the club operates, anyone wanting to join must be able to swim at least twenty-five metres or be working at level 6 or above of the Swim England swim programme. So why not get in touch and join this local friendly club, improve your swimming style, keep fit and have fun!
