Welcome to your November issue...

I

t’s getting closer by the day, and I’m talking turkey, (along with trees, tinsel and trimming-up!) as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more.

It’s at times like this that we’ll realise just what awful effects the COVID pandemic has had on everyone, having missed out on last year’s preparations and excitement. This month’s issue features many local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events. The Magical Christmas Fayre and Lights Switch On in Bourne on November 27th, alongside other similar events in neighbouring towns, will help add to this long-overdue feeling that things are now getting back to normal.

Claire x

Recently while walking my dog, we were startled by another hound suddenly launching itself at us. Surprised, my best friend lurched sideways into me causing me to stub one of my shoes on a kerbstone tearing off most of the sole. The next day I searched for some new footwear and discovered a pair of working boots that I had been given around five years ago but had never worn. Next-day I put them on and set off for my usual five-mile walk with absolutely no trouble. However, the following day I realised the tight boots had cut into my feet and legs in a few places. As I was also suffering from a bad back – probably caused by my dog’s frequent, sudden changes of direction and my spending too much time hunched over a keyboard – the next few days saw me taking mini steps and grimacing and looking every one of my many years. Thankfully, a spell of wearing two pairs of thick socks, the softening of the boot leather and the easing of my back has meant my normal, youthful, jaunty walk has returned!

Your Garden

L

November Gardening Tips eaves may not be on the trees now, but the gardener can make beneficial use of them by making leaf mould: a black plastic bag is all you need.

It is better to shred the leaves, if possible, put them in the black bag, add water and tie loosely so that water can get in and then make holes for the worms to get in. Turn them after six months and leave for several months until they are well rotted down. They can then be used as a soil improver or mulch. This month is not as restful as you might think, as the allotment needs a good tidying-up. Don’t leave old crops to rot; they may harbour pests and disease. Get rid of as many weeds as possible so that they don’t take hold in the spring. Also, a priority this month is to give the allotment or vegetable patch a thorough digging over and spread manure over the surface, (no need to dig it in, just leave it to be absorbed naturally). You can then cover over to keep the weeds at bay and the soil warmer for planting in the spring.

Other tasks for this month include: • Propagate rhubarb crowns by lifting and dividing into smaller pieces, planting at the same depth in their new position, spreading well-rotted manure around the plant, but don’t cover the crown. • Secure covers over compost heaps/ bins. Although the material needs to be damp, winter rain and snow will saturate it and slow down the rotting process.

4

D I S C O V E R I N G

• Plan the crop rotation for next year. Planting one group of vegetables in the same ground, year after year, increases the risk of a build-up of disease. There are websites that provide planners, for example www.gardenplanner.suttons.co.uk. • Dismantle bean canes, if you haven’t already. Leaving them in the ground will cause the bases to rot. • Start to harvest winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks, and parsnips. Wait until after a frost for the parsnips, as the frost encourages the sugars which give parsnips their sweetness. Pick sprouts from the bottom up, as this allows the top ones a chance to swell. • Plant garlic cloves, if you haven’t already, and if you have heavy soil that tends to hold water, then put either gravel or sharp sand in the base of the hole before planting. If you have planted them, check that the birds have not dislodged them. • Check netting on brassicas as the pigeons will be hungry in the cold months and can strip a plant bare in no time. Remove any yellowing leaves, as leaving them to rot risks spreading grey mould. • Plant early “overwintering” broad beans, (either in the ground or in pots), peas, shallots and onions. Happy gardening!

At Glyn Jones Auctions we put our clients and their families first Unlike other auction houses we do not operate to profit from your belongings. We understand the difficulties and stress that can occur from having to clear a house, whether the reason for clearance is a bereavement or a downsizing. We offer a transparent service that ensures clients receive the most for their items. To demonstrate how our house clearance service works, here is our step-by-step guide of the whole process: STEP 1: We assess the property and will quote for the removal of all items. STEP 2: Once removed from the property, all items are still owned by you. We act as your agents and never take ownership over your goods. The items that are unfit for auction will be recycled or donated to local charity shops. STEP 3: All items fit for auction will be sold by us on behalf of you. All the money generated by the sale of these items is then given back to you, with just the inclusion of a service charge.

Matters JUMBLE IS A BIG SUCCESS

Whittlesey Charity Cycle Jumble went ahead last month despite fears due to COVID. The organisers said that they were pleased to see lots of ‘old faces’ at the event at St Andrew’s Parish Hall, Whittlesey, although sad not to see some regulars attend for various reasons. Because of COVID, most pitches were outside as inside table numbers were limited with visitors required to wear face masks. Food and refreshments were available, all prepared and served by Sandra Green and individually wrapped.

We bring you items of interest for your home and community. If there is something you’d like us to cover or you have something to say please get in touch at: Discovering Whittlesea, PO Box 164, Bourne PE10 1ET editor.whittlesea@discoveringmagazines.co.uk

COATES WI GIVEN FLORAL TIPS Coates WI’s October’s meeting saw Lucy from Lucy’s Florist in Whittlesey demonstrate how to plant some winter outdoor planters, which were kindly donated for a raffle to the delight of three lucky members. November 3rd will see the group’s annual meeting, followed by a social evening. For any further information, please contact Fiona on (01733) 208516 or Jen on 0770 3385661.

The organisers said a good donation was made to local charities again this year and visitors left no litter, making them proud of their fellow cyclists. Another event is hoped to be staged next year.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION FUND-RAISERS The Royal British Legion recently held two stalls, one in Coates and the other at the Big Bash. The treasure hunt was won by Mrs Pat Butcher and the winning square was D8. A total of £304.14 was raised. Anyone wishing to lay a wreath at the War Memorial who has not already stated their interest, should contact Poppy Appeal organiser Susan Taylor on 07504 668209 or email: suebtaylor@gmail.com

FIRST DROP-IN MEETING The Ayshea Sanders Sanctuary, a community group for mental health and bereavement, is holding its first drop-in meeting at Wetherspoons, Whittlesey on Tuesday, November 2nd, between 10am and 12 noon and will then meet every Tuesday. This will be a mutual support group for the area with the aim of offering a safe place to talk, individually if people wish, and if required act as a bridge between the initial crisis and further services. The group will be able to signpost into the NHS and has the support of various mental health charities and other organisations. Anyone who feels they would benefit from attending such a group should reply with the word YES or DM Joel Dilley at jdi1071741@aol.com 14

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR The town of Whittlesey and the surrounding villages are continuing with caution their recovery from the restrictions imposed as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic and the past month has seen a considerable increase in activity as we strive to get back to normality. Both the Coates Fete and the Whittlesey Big Bash proved to be enormous successes on a sunny and warm weekend and it was my great pleasure to be invited to open both events. The north green at Coates was packed with stalls, musical entertainment, a dog show and rounds of tug of war. How uplifting it was also to see Holy Trinity Church filled with visitors enjoying afternoon tea. Many congratulations again to Ron and Linda Barratt who along with their hardworking committee put on a tremendous day out for the community. The following day it was the turn of Whittlesey to showcase itself with the Big Bash event on the Manor Fields attended by hundreds of people from near and far. Classic car displays along with the opportunity to try your hand at a wide variety of sports and a host of community activities combined with a successful Golden Age Fair sponsored by Fenland District Council to round off a memorable weekend. It was particularly gratifying to see so many youngsters enjoying the day in a safe environment with their parents and families. A huge vote of thanks to Robert Windle and his committee for organising such a fabulous community event. I would also like to acknowledge the impressive work of Fenland Youth Radio and the Young Technicians who regularly attend as many events as possible in the town and villages to give their support and to ensure that we all receive maximum publicity in the local press and on social media as well as on their own online radio broadcasts. Local businesses have been returning with considerable merit. Kellyvision, Homme Nouveau

and Fontanella’s each have each collected awards from prestigious bodies and deserve our full congratulations and continued support. But pride of place must be reserved this month to Deborah Slator who became the subject of BBC TV's One Show ‘Thank You’ feature highlighting Deborah's achievements in, amongst many other projects, raising awareness of defibrillators in the town and surrounding villages. May I, on behalf of everyone, offer my congratulations to Deborah for not only her achievements but for also putting Whittlesey firmly on the national map. Finally, my congratulations also go the Whittlesey branch of the Royal British Legion on celebrating their own centenary by staging a very moving ceremony at the Whittlesey War Memorial attended by myself, Steve Barclay MP, Mrs Caroline Bewes, High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Cllr Alex Miscandlon, Chairman of Fenland District Council. Until next time... Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council

DEBORAH IS HONOURED BY THE ONE SHOW TV presenter Kirsty Gallagher and a crew from BBC’s The One Show surprised Whittlesey woman Deborah Slator and praised her continued hard work to fund as many defibrillators as possible for Whittlesey and the surrounding villages. Alto Electrical Want to Sort Out Your Sockets!

D

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

id you know that we have the safest electrical sockets in the world, right here in the UK? Since the mid-1900s we have had unparalleled, pioneering, electrical socket designs in this country. If you look inside the terminals of your sockets, you will notice that you can only actually see into the top terminal; this is the ‘Earth’. Inside, you’ll see a lever and if you were to push a plug in, this would activate two shutters that close the entrance to the ‘Live’ and ‘Neutral’, opening them to allow a plug to enter. We have absolutely no need for “safety socket covers” here, and in fact, these bypass the shutters, a fundamental safety feature of the world-leading design. Even after years of educating people, I still regularly discover these little plastic contraptions everywhere, be it in homes or commercial premises (even in our very own town). What people don’t understand is that there is no British Standard for these, which means they’re completely unregulated and can even make the socket more unsafe. Some are not the right size; this can cause damage to the shutters and sometimes even the terminals inside. If they are oversized, this can make them loose which can cause the connection to be poor and cause them to overheat, sometimes even scorching or melting the socket, or sometimes cracking the plate. Sometimes, the back of the

socket cover can be flexible; this can allow it to be put in upside-down, and in fact that acts like a tool to open the terminals and exposing the live parts. By introducing an unnecessary element to the socket, you can potentially create a bridge. If you were to spill a drink on a normal socket with nothing in, it’s very unlikely that the drink will be able to get in as the shutters will stop it. However, if you were to spill a drink on a socket cover, there is more potential for the liquid to get into the socket. I would really like to make the sockets in this town safer, so if you and your children send your disused (hopefully) socket covers to us in the post, with a little letter telling us that they promise not to play with sockets, then we will send back a little gift to thank them for being so sensible. Equity Release:

The Myths and The Misconceptions! The most common feedback about equity release often prompts an angry retort, citing it as a con, a scam and a rip off. Social media is littered with comments about companies involved in it as thieves, and that you will lose your home.

T

he actual truth is a far cry from these unfounded comments. Indeed, in the past they were products called Home Income Plans and Shared Appreciation Mortgages that were not fully regulated and generally it is from bad experiences with these now nonexistent products that generally you will find the basis for the negativity towards equity release Today, modern equity release centres around a product called a Lifetime Mortgage. A fully regulated product, under the Financial Conduct Authority, it offers clients over the age of fifty-five who own their home a flexible way to access their property wealth through a cash-free lump sum or a combination of a lump sum and a drawdown facility. You remain the owner of your home and the lifetime mortgage is a first legal charge on the property, just in the same way as a traditional mortgage.

this offsets the impact on the erosion of equity in a property. My clients initially are concerned that there will not be any equity left in their property and are surprised when they find that with the current interest rates, the amount borrowed will only double in about twenty years! So, if you have heard that the amount doubles every seven years, you are being misled by outdated and inaccurate information. Retirement lending does require expert financial advice as a lifetime mortgage may not be the right solution for you. I would encourage you to book an appointment with me, and I can provide you the facts you need to make an informed decision. I live locally, and on hand to provide my clients the support and financial advice they need to meet their retirement objectives. Please give me a call anytime for a chat! 07453 084137 or email: nick.lovell@cfsequityrelease.co.uk

Nick holds the London Institute of Banking and Finance qualifications to advise on mortgages and equity release. CFS Equity Release is a member of the Equity Release Council.

Interest rates have been at an historically low level and whilst we are seeing some small rate rises, it is still possible to obtain rates below three percent. The interest rate is also fixed, so there is no danger that you will be back to a standard variable rate and suffer a hike in interest in later years. A lifetime mortgage requires no contracted repayment. Interest will roll up and compound and the amount borrowed will increase. However, it is often overlooked that property prices continue to increase year-on-year and YOU NEED TO TAKE LEGAL ADVICE BEFORE RELEASING EQUITY FROM YOUR HOME AS LIFETIME MORTGAGES AND HOME REVERSION PLANS ARE NOT RIGHT FOR EVERYONE.

Longer-term, they will complement the completed Kings Dyke and Milk Water Drove projects and also support the prospect of a new southern relief road.

WHITTLESEY WELCOMES NEW INTERACTIVE HIGHWAYS SIGNS Interactive highways signs to help improve travel in and around Whittlesey are now fully operational in the town. The three new variable highways message signs (VHMS) along East Delph and the A605, east and west of the B1040 roundabout, alert drivers when flooding closes the B1040 and/or North Bank alongside the River Nene. The signs will also be able to warn motorists when the nearby A47 is closed due to accidents and when there are other emergencies or roadworks affecting traffic in the area. The highways signs have been installed as part of the Whittlesey Growing Fenland Masterplan Project, led by Fenland District Council in partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA), along with stakeholder groups made up of town, district and county councillors and business and community representatives. Earlier this year, the masterplan project successfully secured the maximum £1 million of funding available through the Combined Authority’s Market Towns Programme. A total of £57,500 was awarded for the signs, with other funding secured for projects including £500,000 for a new Whittlesey Heritage Visitor Centre, £218,169 for the Whittlesey Heritage Walk and a business capital grants scheme. As well as helping to reduce the impact of seasonal flooding at the Whittlesey Washes, the signs will help to mitigate delays caused by the current major improvement works at the Kings Dyke Level Crossing and A605 improvements at Milk Water Drove. 24

Cllr Dee Laws, town and district councillor for Whittlesey and chairman of the Whittlesey Growing Fenland project, who has campaigned for interactive flooding signs in the area for twelve years, said: “The Whittlesey Washes flood storage reservoir plays an essential part in protecting nearby communities from flooding, but when high levels of water cause the B1040 and North Bank, Peterborough, to close it can be a headache for motorists. “These new signs will alert drivers when the roads are closed owing to flooding and when other roads nearby are affected by closures or delays. They will enable better planning for travel at the earliest opportunity, helping improve the quality of life for residents and visitors in the area.” Photo: pictured at one of the three new highways signs in Whittlesey are (from left): Cllr Chris Boden, Fenland District Council leader and Whittlesey town, district and county councillor; Cllr Dee Laws; Domenico Cirillo, business programmes manager and lead Market Towns Programme officer for the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority; and Phil Hughes, head of leisure services at Fenland District Council and member of the Whittlesey Growing Fenland project

COUNCIL RETAINS CUSTOMER SERVICES GOLD STANDARD Fenland District Council has again been reaccredited with the Cabinet Office’s prestigious Customer Service Excellence (CSE) Standard following an annual inspection. An independent CSE assessor said it has once again continued to meet the gold standard for customer service delivery. He also awarded the Council CSE ‘Compliance Plus’ accreditation in six areas for showing best practice – two more than at its last CSE review. In his report, the independent assessor said: “Fenland has managed the COVID-19 pandemic situation exceptionally well. There was the potential for a significant dip in performance, but Fenland has prevented this through its actions. Since the last review, the council has increased its efforts to manage the impact of the pandemic.” N OV E M BE R 2 0 2 1

By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades At this time of year, the elements can take their toll on the home; we can expect gusty winds and heavy rain to play havoc when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, fences and even trees. But it is also a popular time for rogue doorstep traders to inflict their own kind of winter misery on unsuspecting homeowners. Trading Standards always advise to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who “happen to be in your area”. They will ask for cash up front, and it could well be for work which may be unnecessary, expensive, and sub-standard. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card and say you will contact them at your convenience, should you need their services. Also be very wary of leaflets – do your research first by checking their contact details or ask a family 15:38 member or friend to do so on your behalf. However, here are some simple but effective steps to take to winterproof your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare: • The hot weather in the summer can cause uPVC doors and windows to expand and become mis aligned. Check to ensure that you do not have any drafts, as a properly insulated home is an absolute must, especially with the increase in energy prices. • Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks, and blockages including the insulation cladding around your boiler. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst, causing potentially expensive water damage. • Bleed your radiators to warm your property more efficiently. • Get a boiler service from a professional. • Clear out your gutters. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs, www.safelocaltrades.com should be your first port of call. With over seventy different categories, we have a range of local professional, recommended, and reliable tradespeople to call upon.

Finance

How Will Carbon Zero Impact Our Finances? By Eamonn Dorling

I

n November, more than one hundred world leaders will gather in Glasgow to observe and participate in the UN Climate Change Conference – generally referred to as COP26. One of the central themes will be how to prevent limiting global temperature rises below an additional 1.5 degrees.

Delegates will endorse commitments to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. The financial impact will be significant as it coincides with the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the potential benefits could include greater awareness and a ‘Green Economy.’ The potential cost of fossil fuels, their extraction, and their side effects will be replaced by cleaner alternatives that will also resolve challenges. There will be winners and losers, as has always been when old technologies give way to new ones. Availability of efficient energy storage from solar and wind can provide high cost and environmental benefits. However, failing to adapt to the changes brought about by realising that taking no action, is not an option. The next generation needs to quickly become aware of how lifestyle changes and living patterns are the best way to prepare. Investing in sustainable industries, organisations, and practices will provide better returns than drifting on past performance. Matching timescales that link personal goals with predicted events is a good starting point when considering an investment portfolio that

yields maximum benefits at the right time. But, again, an experienced independent financial adviser can help plan for the essential things. MAKING PROGRESS IN GOVERNMENT AND CONSTITUENCY By Steve Barclay MP

S

uch a lot has happened since last month, I’m not sure where to start! Firstly, I’d like to thank all those constituents who sent me their best wishes following the Government reshuffle. My new role as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minster for the Cabinet Office means I now focus on supporting the Prime Minister, advising on developing and implementing policy, and driving forward government business with involvement in various cabinet committees and taskforces. There’s much to do and it’s great to meet new teams and re-connect with former colleagues. Of course, none of this takes away from my role representing my constituents in North East Cambridgeshire, and campaigning on your behalf on issues such as healthcare and my drive to keep treatment and NHS services as close to home as possible; supporting local sporting teams and initiatives to improve facilities; ensuring transport schemes such as Kings Dyke, Wisbech Rail and dualling the A47 maintain momentum; and fighting the mega incinerator plans for Wisbech. Touching on just some of those issues: it was good to see first-hand the £1.66 million station building upgrade at March which is making excellent progress. The new facilities

include a new open-plan ticketing hall, waiting area, modern toilets, retail unit and an extension to the car park. This will make for a much more welcoming site for visitors and commuters. Manea train station users will also soon see an improvement with a new onehundred-space car park due to open shortly. Also, it’s fantastic to see the continuing progress at Kings Dyke. The embankment that will carry the road to the railway bridge from the eastern road tie-in is now complete. You can also see the progress made on the eastern roundabout now kerbs have been installed and work is underway on the ducts that will house the electrical cable for the street lighting. Construction is complete on the drainage systems for the portion of the road north of the railway bridge and the focus is now switching to constructing the drainage systems at the western end of the scheme. This £32 million project for a new road and bridge will make a world of difference to residents and businesses when complete at the end of next year. These road and rail projects, plus others like the £13 million Guyhirn roundabout improvements are great examples of the investment that is being made in our transport infrastructure and I will do all I can to ensure it continues.

HOLISTIC HUB is here to help

H

olistic Hub Whittlesey was set up by Katie Dullea to help people resolve or come to terms with their personal issues.

She can help people deal with a variety of issues such as phobias, stress, anxiety, performance nerves and sports related problems. For many years Katie worked in the beauty industry and listened as people told her their problems. She felt that she needed to find a way to understand on a deeper level and help them resolve or come to terms with their issues. Since then she has invested in learning many techniques to heal the mind and body and how they are inextricably linked and set up Holistic Hub Whittlesey three years ago. A qualified hypnotherapist, she is also a certified practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (ABNLP) and has a Diploma in Indian Head Massage. She said: “I have always been interested in listening to, and helping, people, so much so that when I was a child I was known as ‘Aunt Katie’. A year ago, I set up a quiet, peaceful room in my garden where I can meet people away from any distractions and discuss with them their issues in complete privacy. “People of all ages and backgrounds come to me with a wide variety of issues. People get stuck in life and are being held back because of a personal issue and are looking for resolution. It is such a privilege to help people by using a variety of treatments to help them overcome their issues.

“I like to take a holistic mind and body approach to any problem that my clients may be facing and help unlock them using a range of techniques." Treatments include: HYPNOTHERAPY Hypnotherapy is an age-old therapy, using complete relaxation of the mind and body to bypass the conscious mind and truly get to the root cause of where any problems may manifest in themselves. INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE Focusing on the upper back, shoulders, upper neck, face and scalp, this massage is based on the healing system using the upper chakras. If our head feels good, we feel good. This uses aromatherapy essential oils to promote wellness and healing within the mind and body. The treatment is around thirty-forty minutes and includes tranquil background music with nature slideshows. NEURO-LINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING This is a group of techniques and understandings using the conscious and unconscious mind to ethically bring about a state to allow you to move forward. Katie is a member of the National Hypnotherapy Society and is fully insured. She also offers health and weight loss programme Slim Holistic, which is designed to help you lose excess weight and stay healthy while eating delicious foods that fuel your body, and also relaxation audios. How To Have Ecstatic, Blissful, Harmonious Relationships The late Lester Levenson said, "Want for the other person what they want for themselves." In that advice, he encapsulated 50% of the path to harmonious relationships.

T

he other half is to fully honour what you want for yourself; informed, of course, by the wisdom of integrating that with what other people want for themselves. Would you really want to have dinner with someone who didn't want to be there with you? If so, low self-esteem. When we want for the other person something other than what they want for themselves, we make ourselves their enemy. Quite obviously, this will not give us harmony. Relationships come in all types: marriages, friendships, parent-child, boss-employee, even government-citizen. This principle of harmony can also be applied to business. When it comes to relationships with potential customers and clients and seeking to make sales, we can also "want for the other person what they want for themselves." This is also the key to harmonious customer relationships. We can blend and integrate seamlessly with the other's needs and wishes. People fear selling because they don't understand it, or this principle, or they believe the old nonsense about sales being "them versus you". It's not! In seminars, I often run a boundaries exercise in which two people stand facing each other, five metres apart. One person displays hand signals; hands down by the sides means the other person may walk closer. Hands up in front of the chest means don't come any closer. The second person can then choose if they want to move towards the first person during those moments when their hands are down and must stop if they raise them again.

This is a powerful exercise. You're tuning into what's true for you, and you're tuning into what's true for them. This is your 'Yeses' and your 'Nos', your free will, and theirs. It's also great training for ALL OTHER contexts of human interaction. "Would you like more cake?"; "No thanks, I'm full"; "Ah, go on, enjoy yourself!"; "Ah, okay then." If you're a person who gives in to more cake you don't want, you're unpractised with your 'Nos'. If you're the person not taking 'No' for an answer, you're not tuning into what the other person wants for themselves, and might ask yourself, "Who are you really doing it for?" Not them, they've already declined. This is essentially the thin end of coercive control. The harmony of respected boundaries can become a breeding ground for bliss and ecstasy in relationships. If you'd like to watch the class in which I taught the boundaries exercise, it's available in two minute, five, seventeen and the full thirty minute versions at www.kissingconsciousness.com/boundariesX

PECT’s CHESS Service is helping residents to keep warm and safe

W

ith the decrease in Universal Credit payments, the energy crisis and the colder weather starting to hit, it is the most vulnerable people that will be affected.

Cambridgeshire Home Energy Support Service (CHESS), a service provided by environmental charity PECT and Cambridgeshire ACRE, is supporting vulnerable residents in northern Cambridgeshire with free energy advice and support. The free service can offer you a wide range of support, from providing top-up fuel vouchers and debt relief of up to £500, to providing small home improvements and accessing additional support such as grants. CHESS has recently helped support an individual who is a full-time carer for her son and was struggling financially with electricity bills and her oil central heating. Karen Igho, Health and Wellbeing Lead at PECT, said: “When she was referred onto us, she hadn’t had any oil for two weeks and had been relying on electric heaters which were costing a lot of money on her prepayment meter.

“In response to this, a tank of oil was ordered the same day of the call and was delivered a few days later. We also applied for a Stay Well Grant on her behalf. This was approved a week later, and we were able to top-up the electricity prepayment meter which will last for a significant amount of time. “We have also provided several energy-saving items, including energy-saving light bulbs, a draught excluder and draught tape.” This has had a significant impact on the comfort and quality of life, the full-time carer said: “If I hadn’t been referred, I would never have known the help was out there. We have been in difficult circumstances and this has made such a huge difference for me mentally in the past few weeks. My son is also happier now that we can have the heating on.” If you would like to find out more about the service and discuss your situation, you can freephone on 0800 8021773, email: warmhomes@pect.org.uk or visit www.pect.org.uk/WarmHomes. To receive support, you must meet eligibility criteria. To make this service possible, Warm Homes has been funded by the Energy Industry Voluntary Redress Scheme, please visit www.energyredress.org.uk for more details.

Does My Prayer Count?

I

’ve mentioned before in previous articles that before I came into full-time ministry my career was predominantly in business. Several friends and colleagues at the time would say to me ‘You’re a religious person, aren’t you?’ I would always take the opportunity to say that my faith in God was a relationship with Jesus rather than a religion. He is someone that I can talk to on a normal level just like I would a friend.

As a young Christian, I found it very hard at first to grasp that when you pray to God it doesn’t have to be with elaborate words but simply sincere words from the heart and it’s his delight to listen and respond to those prayers. I will never forget an experience I had more than thirty years ago when I attended one of my first church prayer meetings in a village hall outside of Whittlesey. I felt very insecure and out of my comfort zone as others started to pray confidently. I thought to myself ‘I can’t pray like that, what’s the point of me being here?’ I then decided to wait outside

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH where I stood with my back to the door. Suddenly I heard a voice behind me say clearly and audibly ‘Get yourself back in there, it’s your prayer that’s going to make a difference.’ Turning round quickly I expected to see someone, but the street was deserted. I know to this day that it was the voice of God saying to me that no matter how basic my prayers, they mattered to him. Humbled and still in a state of shock I duly went back inside and prayed. Be encouraged, your prayers count. If you need help and would like us to pray for you, please contact us. Marija Lysak (Assistant Pastor)

TOP TIP

G MARKETIN

I

By Natalie Brannigan

Staying Focused On Your Niche t is so easy to get excited and have an urge to tap into different markets. But do so with caution, you don’t want to spread yourself so thinly that you miss that important opportunity to engage an audience.

Your audience need to know what your products and services are from day one – we are not saying you must put all your eggs into one basket but that you should simply think about sticking to your niche and remember why you started your business in the first place. Career development is an important part of business, maybe once you have enough staff to cover your daily workload you can invest in some additional strings to your bow – this way you aren’t letting your customers down but are also keeping your business options open for future expansion.
