Welcome to your January issue...
S
o here we go into 2022 with new year’s resolutions made and high hopes for the future.
On behalf of our hard-working team at Discovering Magazines, I would just like to wish you all a fabulous 2022, with good health and success in whatever lies in front of you, your family, and your friends.
I know many readers who see their monthly ‘Discovering’ magazine almost like an old friend, dropping by to keep them in touch with events in their town and activities to come; to keep them up to date with advice from our many contributors; and to entertain with our quizzes and competitions. Why not just settle down with a drink and relax with that friend and enjoy our offering this month? All the very best for 2022!
Claire x
First of all, welcome to 2022… It’s great to be back with you for the first issue of a new year, a year which we sincerely hope proves to be a great one for the local community. We hope that you all had a fantastic festive period and feel reinvigorated for the upcoming year. A new year is a time for optimism and positivity, although unfortunately that has been something that has been in short supply over the past near two years of living with COVID-19 and dealing with its impact on the health of the population and economy. Let’s hope 2022 proves to be a memorable year for all the right reasons and that we can finally shake off the negative effects of coronavirus. The Discovering team will once again be doing our level best to bring you the best possible magazine each month so please keep us informed of all your activities…

business that opened in Whittlesey just over a year ago specialising in semi-permanent make-up is now adding to the treatments it can provide.
Beautifully Defined by Nicola, which currently offers powder/ombré brows, eyeliner, lip blush (Gloss and Go Lips), microblading and combination brows, is adding chemical peels and ‘million dollar’ facial treatments in 2022. Owner Nicola Paterson, a registered Pharmacy Technician with twenty-five years’ experience, said: “I’ve been undergoing training to enable me to offer the new courses as an elite technician which I plan to introduce in January and February.” Nicola set up the business within the Enhance Beauty Salon in Eastgate, Whittlesey in December 2020. She said: “Obviously because of COVID the timing could have been better, but It’s flown by. It has been really good and people have been so supportive.” Nicola said the treatments are practically pain-free, having the feel of an ‘electric toothbrush’ and represent good value.

What Clients Need to Know . . n o e c i v Ad

f you are considering undergoing an aesthetic treatment, it can be quite daunting knowing where to start and which practitioner to choose. I would recommend you take the time to do your research before jumping straight in as these are clinically medical procedures, so you need to ensure you are in safe hands. To help you out this month, I have included below some of the key questions you should be asking your chosen practitioner and why these are important.
What training have you had? Unfortunately, the aesthetics industry in the UK is not yet regulated. This means anyone can buy a day course in aesthetics with no previous medical knowledge and start injecting. Some aesthetics courses are extremely in depth and can be taught by doctors or surgeons, however other courses may be taught by people with only a few months experience in aesthetics themselves. This is why it is so important to understand the level of training your practitioner has had and by whom. As there are usually no aesthetics exams to pass in order to demonstrate knowledge and competence in treatments and management of complications, you may wish to turn to a practitioner with a medical background, for example, in nursing or dentistry who is registered with a professional body. This means that your practitioner MUST comply with strict regulations to keep their clients safe from harm. It also means they may have studied for many years in university, have experience in recognising and managing medical complications and passed exams on advanced life support, evidence based practice and health & safety to just name a few.
Do you treat anyone under the age of eighteen?

Whittlesea Deepings
The law has recently changed meaning it is now ILLEGAL for injectable aesthetics treatments including Botox and fillers to be given to anyone under eighteen! If your practitioner is willing to treat under-18s, they are willing to break the law and practise without insurance.
What are you doing to ensure continuous professional development? Scientific knowledge is constantly evolving as is our understanding of best practice within aesthetics. It is important your practitioner can prove they undertake regular training and research. Do not be afraid to question their knowledge. This is your own body you are trusting them with.
Are you fully insured for each treatment you carry out? Ask to see your practitioner’s insurance documents and certificates to prove they are insured to provide the treatments they will be giving you.
Where do you source your products? Make sure you know where your practitioner buys their products from. Botox is a prescription-only medication and MUST be ordered from a pharmacy with a prescription by law. It is illegal to give someone Botox if they have not had a face-to-face consultation with a medical prescriber first. Fillers should also be sourced from pharmacies or official reputable distributors. If someone is buying Botox or fillers from selling pages on the internet, there is a high risk these products are fake, illegal or dangerous. Always ask to see the product in its original packaging and check for the CE mark and the expiry date. If you would like any more advice on this topic please do not hesitate to contact advanced aesthetic nurse Sapphire.

JANUARY 2022
January Blues? [ by Lucy Briggs ]
The twinkling Christmas lights are gone, our bank account may be looking a little empty, and we’re feeling bloated from copious amounts of turkey and chocolate (not to mention the booze!) How can we overcome this bleak month? Having experienced poor mental health myself, here are a few feel-good tips…
1
Do things that you enjoy. I realise that sounds pretty obvious, but I’m not just talking about binge-watching your favourite TV show or eating a bunch of snacks; I mean something that truly feeds your soul. Something wholesome and joyous. For me, it’s reading. Or drinking my morning cup of coffee in the garden. Which leads to my next point…
2 3
Get outside! Yes, I know January weather is rubbish, but there is no better feeling than coming home from a walk, out of the cold, and snuggling down with a warm drink. Such a simple way to feel accomplished and boost those endorphins.
Look after your health. As tempting as it is to hibernate until the weather warms, it is so important to take care of ourselves. What makes us feel better in the short run may not be what is best for us. Why not give “Dry January” a try? Alcohol may be a tempting short-term fix, but it is actually a depressant. It can do wonders for both our body and mind to take a break.
60J A NUA 2022 D I RY S C O
V E R I N G
Bourne
4
Don’t be afraid to say no. This is a tricky one! Life becomes so full of commitments and obligations, it can often feel difficult to say no, or perhaps we invent excuses. Isn’t it strange that we prioritise our physical health over our mental health? It feels acceptable to call in sick with a stomach bug, but maybe not when we’re struggling with stress or anxiety, which is equally as important.
5
Be kind. Not just to others, which is a guaranteed endorphin booster, but to ourselves! Think about how you would speak to a dear friend. Would we tell them they are fat, lazy, or not good enough? Absolutely not! ‘Journaling’ can be a real help here – making a list of things we are thankful for, or that we like about ourselves.
6
But most importantly, REACH OUT. There is absolutely no shame in asking for help from friends, family, or your GP. And if it’s urgent, the lovely Samaritans are at the end of the phone 24/7 on 116 123. Give yourself permission to look after yourself, to be kind to yourself. Here’s to a happy and healthy 2022!

WHITTLESEA STRAW BEAR FESTIVAL Following their pandemic-enforced, virtual festival in 2021, the Strawbearers have decided to organise a hybrid festival on January 14th and 15th. This will include story telling in schools, not open to the public, on Friday, January 14th together with a live and virtual concert in the Ivy Leaf Cub, 1 Gracious Street, Whittlesey with Grannies Attic and Lizzie Hardingham (this is a ticket event). On Saturday, January 15th, a 10.30am procession from the Manor Leisure Centre to the Market Place will be followed by a reduced number of invited dance teams. There will be bears and dance teams around the town centre with a grand finale on the Market Place at approximately 3pm. In addition to the dancing on the street there will be story telling sessions in Queen Street Methodist/ United Reformed Church at 12noon, 1pm and 2pm (free event).
The next meeting is on February 2nd, 2022, and will be a sing-a-long led by Mrs. Kathryn Grey. Guests and new members are always welcome to join the group which meets on the first Wednesday of the month (no meeting January) at Coates Village Hall at 7.30pm. For any information, please contact Fiona on (01733) 208516 or Jen on 07703 385661.

The next meeting is on Tuesday, February 1st at 7.30pm start. Any prospective members are welcome to turn up on the night.
In order to help alleviate parking problems, a park and ride service (donation) will operate from Sir Harry Smith Community College from 9am until 4pm. JANUARY 2022
MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR I trust that all readers have had a Merry Christmas unlike the miserable festive season forced upon us in 2020 when, due to COVID-19 and the isolation regulations, many of us were denied the pleasure of having our loved ones around us at what should always be a joyful time. This Christmas past has indeed been an opportunity to celebrate in a more traditional way and my thanks go out to everyone in the town and villages for the efforts made to bring Christmas cheer to all. I would particularly like to congratulate members of the Christmas Lights Committee for all their hard work in providing us with a marvellous display of lights topped off by the excellent tree in the Buttercross. A word of congratulations also to the committee who have planned all year to bring us our Christmas Extravaganza and I am sure you will agree that their labours were not in vain.
Whittlesey were established to provide a steady supply of food, clothing, furniture and other essential items for the disadvantaged in our town and villages and I know many have cause to be grateful to the foodbank over the past years. Sadly, due to ill health of not only himself but also his wife Eunice and son Andrew, Brian has been forced to retire from the Christian Church as Pastor and Marija has also left to take on new challenges elsewhere. My thoughts and prayers are with them all and I will be eternally grateful for everything that they have achieved for the community. The future of the foodbank is uncertain at the present time but I am working with both Fenland District Council and Cambridgeshire County Council to find a solution. So please offer any support that you may be able to give making the continuation of the foodbank a number one new year's resolution for us all. A happy and healthy new year to you all. Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council
We now look forward to 2022 and hopefully further relaxations of the COVID-19 regulations now that the majority of the country are at least double vaccinated. It is with great personal sadness that I report the departure from the Whittlesey Christian Church of Pastor Brian Smithyman and Assistant Pastor Marija Lysak. In my first term of office as Mayor in 2014 I had the idea of founding a foodbank that did not merely allocate limited vouchers but one that would provide help for the needy whenever it was necessary and so it was that Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid was born. The first people that offered me support were Brian Smithyman and his son Andrew who both helped me to develop my ideas and provided the all-important venue at the Christian Church in Broad Street. Later we were joined by Marija Lysak, Sue and Joe Jennings and other members of the Christian Church. Donations were regularly provided by various churches in the town. Later links with Morrisons, Tesco, Aldi and local stores in

We Are Sorry For Your Loss
‘Discovering Magazines’ are community magazines, issued monthly and distributed to houses and businesses in the local area. They are read and enjoyed by many people. At a sad time like this, we understand that it is not easy to deal with everything following the loss of a loved one. However, one thing which we feel might help you come to terms with your loss is to share with others some information and some of the many memories you may have. So, if you would like us to include a piece about your loved one, maybe including some photographs, please get in touch with us and we would be delighted to share it with our many readers, (at no cost to yourself!) by publishing it in our next issue.

EARLY BIRD SUCCESS NGNPUK would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along to the Early bird Christmas fayre at the Eastrea Centre last November. A special thank you was paid to all the stall holders, cake bakers, chocolate orange knitters, donators and everyone who volunteered and helped raise £1951.12, which will buy one complete syringe driver to be used in local communities and help towards buying a second machine.
KATHARINE OF ARAGON FESTIVAL ROBOT TO HELP TABLE TENNIS PLAYERS Whittlesey Table Tennis Club, a member of the Whittlesey Sports Association, is the proud recipient of a new robot server. The S8 Pro Robot is a state-of-the-art server that can be set up at one end of a table and send different types of serves to improve new and experienced players. It’s said this will be a great asset to the next TT Kidz course that will start on Monday, January 31st at the Indoor Bowls Centre on Station Road, with the eight-week course ideal for those aged seven to eleven. The scheme costs £40 and each participant will receive a draw string bag with a bat, balls, T-Shirt and activity book plus of course expert tuition. To enrol, contact Peter Hau on 07554 624525 or google Whittlesey Table Tennis Club.
Peterborough Cathedral and Peterborough Museum will be hosting the annual Katharine of Aragon Festival on January 27th-30th, to mark the date in 1536 when Henry VIII’s first wife was buried at the cathedral (which was in those days an abbey). The centrepiece of the festival, which includes events for all ages on a Tudor theme, is an audience with King Henry VIII, in the form of performance historian John White. ‘His Majesty’ will be in contemplative mood in the year 1542, reflecting on recent turbulent events, including the annulment of his marriage to Katharine. The performance will be both in person at the cathedral and also live streamed to allow more people to take part. Details of the full programme, including ticket links, can be found on the website, www.peterboroughcathedral.org.uk/katharine

HOT SUPPORT FOR HEAT CAMPAIGN Fenland District Council has backed a national campaign to raise awareness and highlight support available to those who are struggling to heat their homes. A Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, organised by fuel poverty charity National Energy Action (NEA), highlighted the issues around fuel poverty and encouraged people to seek support to help them keep safe and warm at home. With temperatures dropping and energy bills rising, the council, along with its partners, is reminding residents of the support and advice available to help those in fuel poverty or facing other financial worries. FOR many, a new year signals change – and that could mean a new car, saving money and efforts to be kinder to the environment. With an electric car or van, you can achieve this, especially when it has been made even more affordable by a government grant towards a home charging 15:38 point at your own home. With increasing consumer demand, greater availability of vehicles and government support, sales of electric vehicles are growing strongly in parallel to the development of UK charging point infrastructure. Consumers have until the end of March 2022 to apply for a government grant to help them make the change. The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) is a grant that provides a 75% contribution to the cost of one charge point and its installation. A grant cap is set at £350 (including VAT) per installation. The main requirement is that a person owns, leases, or has ordered a qualifying vehicle and has dedicated offstreet parking at their property. You can also apply for two charge points at the same property if you have two qualifying vehicles. The grant works by a customer choosing an EVHS installer to install their charge point, who then applies on the customer’s behalf. The installer will bill the customer for the price of the installation, less the grant amount they have applied for. Customers cannot apply directly for an EVHS grant. Safe Local Trades have members who are Office for Low Emissions Vehicles (OLEV) authorised installers and can apply for the government grant on behalf of customers in and around Peterborough. For a reliable and professional service, contact them on www.safelocaltrades.com and search the dropdown trades box for Electric Vehicle Charging.

Repaying Debt v Investing
N
ormally the start of a new year gives us an opportunity to reevaluate our financial well-being, and I am asked this question a lot by my clients. If I have some spare cash, should I reduce my mortgage or save it and invest it for use in the future?
NAZ MILLER
This is a really good question and there is no right or wrong answer because it depends on individual circumstances as we are all unique and no two people’s finances are the same. If you have expensive debts that charge high rates of interest like credit cards, catalogue accounts, unsecured loans overdrafts etc. then it makes perfect sense to prioritise and clear or reduce these borrowings first. Mortgage debt is an exception to this golden rule because mortgage debt is a long-term debt and as such is designed to be repaid over a longer period. Having said that any debt whether it’s zero percent finance high or low interest rate is a commitment in that you do have the burden to service these debts and it is noted as a liability on your credit score. One final point I would like to make here is that even if the interest rates are low, say three or four percent, if you choose to invest your cash then there is no guarantee that you will be able to beat this because investment returns are not guaranteed and if the stock markets fall you could have losses and at the same time you still have an outstanding debt.
Now we look at the other side of the argument, investing your spare cash for the future. If the only debt you have outstanding is your mortgage and you have three to six months’ worth of salary saved in an easy access account then it makes sense to consider investing for the future. If you waited to invest until your mortgage was repaid, then your time horizon is shortened and stock market investment offers better potential for beating inflation over the long term. This is because the long term offers the prospect of compound interest and capital growth to work for you by allowing your money to grow. This is a broad subject and if you would like a further discussion then please do get in touch or email – details given below. Your Garden
A
January Gardening Tips fter the indulgences of the festive season, a bit of winter digging will blow the cobwebs away and get you back into shape!
Well-rotted manure or organic material can be added to the soil surface, and it will become incorporated naturally. Also, a good idea when you are digging is to apply lime to the surface at 100g per square metre (3oz per square yard) especially where you grew brassicas the year before. Getting the soil prepared now will save time feeding later in the year and will often enhance crop growth and yield. Rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, or even a pile of straw, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. What could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb, harvested in late February? You could start a bean trench by digging down about 60cm, line it with newspaper or shredded cardboard, then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down. This will provide nutrients and help retain moisture. Towards the end of the month, seed potatoes should be available, and you can start chitting them ready for planting: put them rose side uppermost and use old egg boxes or seed trays.
32
D I S C O V E R I N G

Weather permitting, there are a few jobs that can be tackled at the allotment or vegetable plot: •
Clean up your plot by disposing of all the damaged and rotten crops: most of the overwintering vegetables will suffer if the conditions are wet. Also remove any leaves as these are a perfect hide-out for slugs and snails. Your shed or greenhouse, tools, trays, and pots could be cleaned too, ready for the new year.
• Prune apple and pear trees, but not stone fruits such as cherry and damson; they should be summer pruned. • Plant bare-rooted trees and bushes. • Protect plants from cold and check stakes and ties. •
Draw the soil up around the stalks of cabbages and winter cauliflowers to just under the first set of leaves. Check over Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli and support them with a strong stake to prevent them from being blown over in high winds.
•
In non-freezing weather, shallots can be planted. Shallots take longer to grow than onions, but if planted now, should be ready earlier in the summer.
• Any stored fruit and vegetables need checking for rotten or damaged produce and evidence of mice. Here’s to a year of successful gardening!

TIME TO START AFRESH
By Steve Barclay MP
T
he beginning of the new year brings hopefulness. Regardless of the challenges of the last twelve months, it’s a time to start afresh.
A number of areas where there has been recent progress will come to their completion, for example the opening of the long-awaited Kings Dyke crossing in Whittlesey and the roundabout improvements at Guyhirn. This builds on improvements like the upgrade at March rail station and the newly refurbished March Community Centre. Others are now a step closer, including the delivery of a number of local 3G football pitches. Nationally we will continue to respond in the new year to the changing path of COVID. It has given fresh prominence to the wonder of science, as our vaccine developers at Oxford University have shown. It has also shown how in government we can deliver quicker and in new ways, as was the case with food parcels at home for the clinically extremely vulnerable or the development at pace of the furlough
scheme and self-employed income support scheme. This year has also seen a much greater focus on the environment. The lockdowns were tough in a host of ways, but they also led many to a reconnection with nature, such as through daily walks. Likewise, COP26 in Glasgow was a success in taking action on a range of climate change measures, bringing together one hundred and forty different countries. The last year has brought sadness. The impact of COVID on families losing loved ones. The other medical impacts that the disruption of the virus has caused. Alongside this a huge economic cost. Within Parliament we lost my friends Sir David Amess and James Brokenshire within a week of each other. David did achieve city status for Southend; he had written to me about this when I was appointed as Minister for the Cabinet Office. There are always challenges ahead, but also much to celebrate and be grateful for. I wish you and your families all the very best for 2022.

How Can an ISA and a Pension Help Me Retire Earlier? By Eamonn Dorling
T
he State Pension Age used to be regarded as sixty-five for men and sixty for women. Many employers' pension schemes reflected these ages. This is no longer the case, but you can retire when you like as long as you can afford it. On the other hand, you do not have to stop work because you receive a pension. Many people like the idea of retiring early so that they can enjoy themselves and have more time for family and friends. However, unless you have an excellent pension that allows access to benefits before the normal retirement age, funding a life of leisure can be a struggle. Having flexible access to a pension can provide tax-efficient income to bridge the gap between stopping work and the state pension commencement. In addition, creating a fund can be assisted by tax relief – a very worthwhile boost to retirement funding if you plan well. Sometimes we are fortunate enough to inherit or save up a lump sum in savings. An improvement might be to invest wisely with the tax-efficient wrapper of an ISA so that it is exempt from income tax and capital gains when you need to draw on it. The underlying investment might be cash (secure – but notoriously poor interest), or equity-based which might be more volatile but historically should provide better returns over the medium to long term. It is usually a good idea to spread investments around so that you don't end up with all your eggs in one basket. An independent financial
adviser can check your existing portfolio or create a new one for you and help you make the right decisions to retire when you want to. Looking Back and Looking Forward
I
BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED
t is now that time of year when I do a lot of reflection; I like to look back over the year and see what I have done successfully and what I have done that has not been quite as successful, to help me learn and grow as a person, and as a business owner.
This month, I want to reach out to sympathise with those who have struggled over the past almost two years. People never want to tell you if they are struggling, especially those in business. I understand, nobody wants you to think that their business has any issues, but all businesses have challenges at some point. It’s a rollercoaster, and this past year has been a ride and a half! I know we have had our issues, and at times it has felt like it would never end! So, I wanted to send people who have owned a business over lockdown, strength, and hope. As a business owner and employer who followed the team and then returned to work through lockdown with additional measures in place, it has been a challenge to keep up with the constantly changing guidance and restrictions; making sure you put any measures in place to keep the team and our clients safe; the HR and all the administration; and keeping up with the constantly changing diary. We had to change our whole system to a paperless one. We also had to make our engineers and clients safer, something that is a challenge when executed, even when you don’t need to do it at short notice! As a mum, I wanted to reach out to all of those who have had to home-school throughout lockdown, to those whose children have additional needs and have been struggling,
Domestic
silently, trying to get through with no support. There is no other option but to keep going. To those that have had to work whilst being a teacher and have ‘painted a smile on’ for Zoom whilst your ‘house falls down around your ears’. To all you new mums with lockdown babies, who cry if anybody looks at them because they’re not used to seeing other people. Both my sister, Kay, who runs the office, and I, had babies just after lockdown started, babies that were unable to meet for months, and neither of whom have ever been to a baby group. To all of you who have had COVID; to those that lost loved ones and to those still struggling and trying to recover but are feeling flat. Our family all had COVID at the same time, and whilst my littlest ended up in hospital, he bounced back very quickly. It took me a long time to feel normal again. 2022 owes us all big time, so please enjoy this year, and make sure that you make up for all the memory-making that has been missed out on. Happy New Year!

Westbrook Window Repairs say Thank You for Local Support Fenland business Westbrook Window Repairs would like to thank their loyal customers for the amazing support shown to them during bleak times. The business officially opened in May 2019. Tom Westbrook, the man behind the company, had more than twenty-five years’ experience in the trade before embarking on this new challenge. Tom explains: “I’ve always dreamed of running my own business and still to this day feel overwhelmed by the support received from local customers.” Tom loves running his own business and especially enjoys meeting people and helping with any job big or small. From repairing draughty letter boxes, changing locks, hinges, and glass to replacing a house full of windows or fitting a stylish new door he is always happy to provide a free no obligation quote.
Tom has always been a big believer in repairing wherever possible. Often to the surprise of many customers, Tom can complete lots of different aspects of repair work, saving them the expense of buying new. Tom and his wife Suzanne are very grateful to the customers that have supported their growing business over the last two-and-a-half years. They are looking to the future and excited about what the future holds for the developing business. If you would like further information about how Westbrook Window Repairs can help please call them on 01354 653445 and follow them on Facebook.
